  1. Good morning, Church. We're going to read 2 Timothy 2, 14 to 26.

  2. ! Dealing with false teachers.

  3. Keep reminding God's people of these things. Warn them before going against correlling about words.

  4. It is no value and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,

  5. a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handle the word of truth.

  6. Avoid godless chatter because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.

  7. Their teaching will spread like a gangrene.

  8. Among them are Imenus and Philetus, who have departed from the truth.

  9. They say that the resurrection has already taken place and they destroy the faith of some.

  10. Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription,

  11. The Lord knows who I is, and everyone who confess the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.

  12. In a large house, there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay.

  13. Some are for special purpose and some of common use.

  14. Those who cleanse themselves from the letter will be instruments for special purpose,

  15. made holy, useful for the master, and prepared to do any good work.

  16. Flee the evil desire of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace,

  17. along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

  18. Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments,

  19. because you know they produce quarrels.

  20. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome,

  21. but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.

  22. Opponents must be gentle instructed,

  23. in the hope that God will grant them repentance,

  24. leading them to a knowledge of the truth,

  25. and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil,

  26. who has taken them captive to do his evil.

  27. Amen.

  28. Thanks so much, Alexandra.

  29. Do keep the passage open.

  30. If you've not got a Bible, try and shuffle along and find one if you can.

  31. We're going to be working our way through that passage.

  32. If you're here for the first time,

  33. then we have been working our way through the book of 2 Timothy,

  34. and we've arrived at these verses,

  35. so that's why we are in these verses this morning.

  36. Let me pray, ask for the Lord's help as we look at God's word together.

  37. Let me pray.

  38. Father, we do recognise that what we're doing now is a spiritual battle.

  39. To listen to you and ignore the distractions around us and of the world

  40. is more difficult than it should be.

  41. And so, Lord, we pray and ask for your help.

  42. Pray that your Holy Spirit, who inspired these words,

  43. might now be at work in our hearts,

  44. helping us to listen to them and respond in obedience and faith.

  45. Help me to speak truly and carefully

  46. and be at work in all of us, we pray in Jesus' name.

  47. Amen.

  48. Now, as you look down at the passage,

  49. I want you to notice that the heart of what's going on here

  50. is there in verse 19.

  51. It's this solid foundation.

  52. Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm,

  53. sealed with this inscription,

  54. the Lord knows those who are his,

  55. and everyone who confesses the name of the Lord

  56. must turn away from wickedness.

  57. In all probability, those verses are a quote from Numbers chapter 16.

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  58. In Numbers 16, you get the story of the Korahite rebellion.

  59. The Korahite rebellion happened in the wilderness

  60. when the people of Israel are leaving slavery in Egypt

  61. and heading to the promised land,

  62. but are yet to arrive.

  63. They had been promised to enter into a land

  64. flowing with milk and honey,

  65. but instead, they found themselves in the wilderness.

  66. And they were fed up.

  67. And more than just fed up, the Korahites were angry.

  68. Angry specifically with Moses and Aaron,

  69. and angry with them for presuming

  70. that they were the leaders of God's people.

  71. How dare you do this, Moses and Aaron?

  72. Who do you think you are leading the people?

  73. How on earth do you expect us to follow you

  74. when you've not given us anything that we were promised?

  75. We're here in the wilderness.

  76. Where's the land flowing with milk and honey?

  77. And the story ends with a showdown.

  78. God summons the people before him

  79. and brings them in front of the tabernacle.

  80. And Moses asks people to stand away from Korah and his men

  81. and says, right, God is going to judge.

  82. God now is going to answer the Korahites' question.

  83. Who has the right to lead God's people?

  84. And so as they stand back from the Korahites,

  85. the ground literally opens up

  86. and swallows Korah, his men, his family,

  87. and all their possessions and closes up over them.

  88. Buried alive.

  89. It's a dramatic story of God really proving

  90. that Moses and Aaron had the right to lead God's people.

  91. And Paul quotes it here in 2 Timothy 2, verse 19,

    2 Timothy 2:19

  92. because he wants to draw two lessons for Timothy

  93. from that story.

  94. Two foundations, he calls them,

  95. sealed with inscriptions.

  96. And they are, look down at verse 19,

  97. number one, the Lord knows those who are his.

  98. And secondly, everyone who confesses the name of the Lord

  99. must turn away from wickedness.

  100. Just as we start, think about those with me for a moment.

  101. Think about the first one,

  102. the Lord knows those who are his.

  103. This implies, doesn't it, says Paul,

  104. that you and I don't know who belongs to the Lord.

  105. We cannot tell who belongs to God and who does not.

  106. God's people are to a certain degree invisible to us,

  107. but not to God.

  108. They are known to God.

  109. In other words, Paul's point is to Timothy

  110. that the church now, just like Israel then,

  111. is in a sense a mix of people,

  112. a mix of genuine believers,

  113. and people who claim to be believers,

  114. but are not really.

  115. And largely speaking,

  116. that difference is invisible to us.

  117. It's not something that we can see.

  118. Being a Christian,

  119. belonging to God,

  120. is not about external behavior,

  121. but about an internal change of heart.

  122. Being a Christian is about having our hearts changed and transformed,

  123. that we love God and trust him.

  124. And that internal change is not apparent to us.

  125. People don't wear a badge.

  126. You can't see.

  127. So you could claim to be a Christian,

  128. and we wouldn't know whether it was true or not.

  129. But God does, right?

  130. No one fools God.

  131. You might fool a church.

  132. You might fool yourself.

  133. You can never fool God,

  134. because God knows those who are his.

  135. Secondly then,

  136. everyone who confesses the name of the Lord

  137. must turn away from wickedness.

  138. This is the second foundation,

  139. that the visible sign of invisible change is obedience.

  140. Obedience.

  141. In other words,

  142. while it's impossible for us to see the invisible change in human hearts,

  143. we are able to observe external obedience.

  144. External obedience is not an infallible sign of genuine faith,

  145. but it is a sign of genuine faith.

  146. So if you claim to be a Christian,

  147. but you don't live as one,

  148. you don't obey the Lord,

  149. well, then you're almost certainly not a Christian.

  150. If you call yourself a Christian,

  151. but you have no desire to please God,

  152. to live his way,

  153. to submit to his word,

  154. then in all probability,

  155. you're lying to yourself about being a Christian.

  156. Not, I hasten to add,

  157. not because obedience saves you.

  158. Obedience does not save you,

  159. but obedience is the mark

  160. of having received salvation from the Lord Jesus Christ.

  161. His obedience saves us.

  162. Our obedience is a sign that we have received his salvation.

  163. A desire to follow God and to live his ways

  164. and to please him is a sign of true faith.

  165. It's why if you belong to this church as a church member,

  166. we ask not only do you believe the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  167. but we also look at your life

  168. to see whether you are living in a way that backs that up.

  169. It's why baptism is really the entry point

  170. into the life of the church

  171. because it is a first act of step of obedience

  172. to Jesus' command.

  173. Believe and be baptized, he says.

  174. So there you have it, two foundations.

  175. The Lord knows those who are his.

  176. They're invisible to us.

  177. And everyone who confesses the name of the Lord

  178. must turn away from wickedness.

  179. Now, what I want you to see this morning

  180. is that really the rest of the passage

  181. works out in the light of those two foundations.

  182. Essentially, the rest of the passages,

  183. you know, if those are the solid truths,

  184. then what should church be like?

  185. You know, what's Timothy's job in church to be

  186. if these are the solid foundations?

  187. How should he go about his ministry

  188. in a visible church,

  189. which is a mix of the genuine and the fake?

  190. Well, basically, Paul says two things,

  191. one before verse 19 and one after,

  192. and each of them have their own illustration.

  193. So the first is about a road builder

  194. and the second is about a housekeeper.

  195. And for the rest of our time,

  196. we're going to talk about road building

  197. and housekeeping, as Paul does here.

  198. So firstly, the road builder, verses 14 to 18.

  199. Look down at verse 15.

  200. This is the instruction that Paul gives to Timothy.

  201. Do your best to present yourself to God

  202. as one approved,

  203. a worker who does not need to be ashamed

  204. and who correctly handles the word of truth.

  205. Here you go.

  206. This is Timothy's task in a mixed church,

  207. in a church of invisible faith,

  208. made visible by external obedience.

  209. What are you to do in that mixed church?

  210. Well, says Paul,

  211. you need to make sure

  212. that you correctly handle the word of truth.

  213. Literally here to guide a straight path,

  214. go in a straight line,

  215. not to cut corners

  216. or to deviate to one side or the other.

  217. Apparently, the word here

  218. is the word from road building,

  219. correctly handling the word of truth

  220. is cutting a straight path,

  221. as in road building.

  222. It's not hard to think, why is it?

  223. If you've been in Britain any length of time

  224. or even in any other country

  225. that was at one point occupied by the Romans,

  226. you will know they love to build

  227. straight roads, right?

  228. Cutting through the countryside

  229. without twisting and turning.

  230. And that, says Paul,

  231. is to be Timothy's approach to the Bible.

  232. Cut a straight line.

  233. Don't twist, don't turn.

  234. Cut a straight line right through it.

  235. Be honest and straightforward

  236. as a Roman road builder

  237. is committed to cutting a straight line

  238. through the countryside.

  239. And in doing that,

  240. Timothy then is to be an approved worker, notice.

  241. Approved, though, notice,

  242. not by the church, but by God.

  243. That is who Timothy is presenting himself to

  244. in verse 15.

  245. That word implies that he is tested or examined.

  246. He is someone who God is holding to account.

  247. And so Timothy, in pleasing God,

  248. can be unashamed if he is not twisting

  249. God's word to his own ends

  250. or seeking to win personal vendettas or arguments,

  251. but clearly working hard to cut a straight road.

  252. I guess it's not really that hard to imagine, is it?

  253. Paul and Timothy in their time together as friends

  254. have probably walked down a lot of Roman roads.

  255. And the difference between an approved worker

  256. and an unapproved worker would have been obvious to them, right?

  257. You can imagine their conversation

  258. as they're walking down the road.

  259. Wow.

  260. Perhaps the guy went on holiday today, right?

  261. Notice the bump and the curve in the road, Timothy?

  262. You know, perhaps the guy, you know, fell asleep.

  263. Perhaps he was drunk,

  264. but he has not cut a straight road.

  265. Timothy, don't be that guy.

  266. Make sure that you work hard.

  267. Study hard.

  268. Train properly for ministry.

  269. Don't cut corners.

  270. Don't make assumptions, Timothy.

  271. Don't rely on chat GPT.

  272. Don't rely on Google searches.

  273. Don't stand there and waffle through your own good ideas.

  274. Don't stand there just relying on your own story

  275. or your own testimony.

  276. Don't rely on telling emotional stories,

  277. but cut a straight road.

  278. Let your teaching of the Bible be on point,

  279. direct, focus, clear.

  280. In the verses that follow,

  281. Paul articulates the distractions

  282. to this kind of straight shooting Bible ministry.

  283. Look down at verse 14.

  284. Quarrels about words.

  285. These seem to be the same

  286. as the foolish and stupid arguments in verse 23.

  287. Silly side pursuits and blind alleys

  288. that Christians love to debate,

  289. but end up nowhere.

  290. More seriously,

  291. there's the godless chatter of verse 16.

  292. Literally, the words there are,

  293. a cacophony of Babel

  294. that leads away from the Lord.

  295. Hymenus and Philetus in verse 18

  296. have said that the resurrection

  297. has already taken place.

  298. It's like an ancient prosperity gospel

  299. that says, hey, you Christian,

  300. you've got everything you're going to get.

  301. It's brilliant now.

  302. You don't need to wait for the glory to come.

  303. Paul says they're wrong.

  304. This is Paul's point, isn't it?

  305. If you know the foundations

  306. that the Lord knows those who are his

  307. and everyone who confesses the name of the Lord

  308. must turn away from wickedness,

  309. what are you to do?

  310. What's going to cut through

  311. that dynamic in church life?

  312. What will expose hearts?

  313. What will lead people away from wickedness?

  314. What will demonstrate to people

  315. that they're faking it?

  316. Straight, honest, clear,

  317. to the point Bible ministry

  318. by a teacher who works hard

  319. and seeks the approval of the Lord

  320. and not men.

  321. I want you just to think with me right now.

  322. What is happening right now

  323. as we open the Bible together?

  324. I think the sense of what's going on here

  325. in 2 Timothy 2

  326. is that Paul is suggesting

  327. that this, if you like,

  328. is a moment in front of the tabernacle

  329. with chorus people.

  330. That's what's going on

  331. every time we open God's word, isn't it?

  332. As we open God's word,

  333. this is God cutting through

  334. the fake and the real.

  335. I don't expect the ground to swallow people up.

  336. If the ground opened here,

  337. I would assume it was just the floor failing,

  338. which is maybe not totally unlikely.

  339. But God does expose our hearts

  340. as we open the Bible together.

  341. And I hope you're experiencing that.

  342. You see, we're a mixed bunch, aren't we?

  343. There are people in this room

  344. who love the Lord

  345. and are keen to live for his glory.

  346. And there are people

  347. who know that's not them,

  348. but they are pretending that it is them.

  349. There are people in this room

  350. who know it's not them

  351. and they want to find out more.

  352. And there are people who aren't Christians,

  353. but think they are and are self-deceived.

  354. And like I said before,

  355. no one's wearing a label, are they?

  356. No one comes in with a label.

  357. I am fooling myself this morning.

  358. I want you to think I'm a Christian,

  359. but really I'm not.

  360. I'm only investigating.

  361. No, none of us wear a label

  362. and that's absolutely fine.

  363. But God knows your heart right now,

  364. this morning,

  365. and he's cutting through it with his word

  366. and exposing you.

  367. It's not me, it's him.

  368. And it's not the sort of vague inferences

  369. of God's word about issues

  370. that don't really matter.

  371. No, it's the central message

  372. all the way through the Bible,

  373. the message about salvation in Christ alone,

  374. through faith alone,

  375. to the glory of God alone.

  376. That's what's going on here.

  377. That's what exposes us.

  378. God's word confronts us with our sin.

  379. That the God who made you,

  380. who loves you,

  381. who gives you life and breath

  382. and everything that you enjoy,

  383. that God deserves your worship

  384. and your praise

  385. and your very life.

  386. But you've lived for yourself,

  387. for your own glory and not his.

  388. We all have.

  389. And so we deserve his judgment.

  390. Having received life as a gift

  391. and lived it to ourselves,

  392. our life is now forfeit.

  393. We deserve to die.

  394. But in an act of unfathomable mercy,

  395. God sent his son, Jesus Christ,

  396. God in flesh,

  397. living in perfect worship

  398. and praise of his father,

  399. before dying on a cross in our place,

  400. bearing the punishment that we deserve,

  401. that we might receive resurrection life through him.

  402. It's that message,

  403. which it takes the whole Bible to tell,

  404. that exposes your heart.

  405. I'm a sinner.

  406. Jesus alone can save me.

  407. I need to trust in him.

  408. The truth is,

  409. this exposing work happens whenever the Bible is open.

  410. So perhaps this morning,

  411. you find yourself as being one of those people

  412. who's responsible for perhaps a community group

  413. or for youth ministry

  414. or for Sunday school

  415. or for doing a one-to-one.

  416. Perhaps you've got your own children

  417. that you're trying to teach the Bible.

  418. Maybe you've got grandchildren,

  419. nieces or nephews,

  420. or maybe you're sharing in the preaching ministry

  421. in the life of the church.

  422. Well,

  423. then you need this instruction in verse 15,

  424. don't you?

  425. That you need God's approval,

  426. not other people's.

  427. You know,

  428. if you open the Bible

  429. looking for people's approval,

  430. then what you will do

  431. is you will fall into the godless chatter.

  432. People love godless chatter.

  433. You know,

  434. if you spend hours talking about

  435. who the beast is in Revelation 13,

  436. they'll love to chat about that.

  437. Or worse,

  438. you'll find yourself spreading the gangrene

  439. of telling people what they want to hear,

  440. like Hymenus and Philetus.

  441. You've got everything you want.

  442. Life's going to be brilliant.

  443. Instead, though,

  444. you need to be examined,

  445. tested,

  446. trained,

  447. open to feedback and criticism

  448. so that you're clear

  449. that what you're saying

  450. is what the Bible is saying.

  451. So that as you speak

  452. for the glory of God,

  453. you do it,

  454. not as someone who's just rocked up

  455. and is saying whatever's on their mind

  456. or in some super spiritual way,

  457. speaking as if,

  458. you know,

  459. preparing to preach

  460. or preparing to speak

  461. or preparing to share God's word

  462. takes no preparation at all.

  463. No,

  464. the image of road building

  465. implies sweat,

  466. doesn't it?

  467. Hard work,

  468. graft.

  469. The spirit loves to bless hard work.

  470. I think it's probably worth

  471. us just lingering here

  472. on this for a moment.

  473. I received an email

  474. from a friend this week

  475. who's a retired seminary professor.

  476. He spent his working life

  477. training men and women

  478. for ministry roles

  479. in the life of the church.

  480. We exchange emails

  481. every now and again

  482. as we debate

  483. various different things

  484. and he made this comment.

  485. He said,

  486. just in one line,

  487. he said,

  488. mediocre preaching

  489. is now the rule

  490. and not the exception

  491. in churches in Britain.

  492. In other words,

  493. he said,

  494. the weakness of the church

  495. is not about

  496. the cultural moment

  497. that we live in

  498. but that ministry

  499. in churches

  500. is done by unqualified people

  501. working for the approval

  502. of men and women.

  503. That was his point.

  504. He's not the only one

  505. saying it,

  506. actually.

  507. So what does it look like

  508. to be a church

  509. that bucks that trend

  510. and takes this instruction

  511. in verse 15 seriously?

  512. But I think it means

  513. that one of the things

  514. that we are going

  515. to invest in

  516. as a local church

  517. is training people,

  518. men and women,

  519. to be these approved workers

  520. who work for God's glory

  521. and who are straight-talking

  522. word ministers, right?

  523. You see,

  524. think about what's being said here.

  525. If Paul is right

  526. that in churches

  527. of invisible hearts

  528. where preaching

  529. is the thing

  530. that cuts through it,

  531. God's word cuts through

  532. invisible hearts

  533. that aren't really

  534. exposed to us,

  535. then two things

  536. are true by implication.

  537. One, which we've seen,

  538. is that it's the ministry

  539. of the word

  540. that does the exposing.

  541. You know,

  542. ministry of the word

  543. is like cancer surgery, right?

  544. It's cutting open

  545. and cutting out the bad.

  546. But the second implication

  547. is that it's not just

  548. any old Bible ministry

  549. that does that work.

  550. It's approved by God

  551. straight-shooting Bible ministry

  552. that does this.

  553. And Paul says

  554. that really that kind of ministry

  555. requires examination,

  556. it requires training,

  557. it requires testing.

  558. Which means that if you expect

  559. to be able to teach young people,

  560. to preach,

  561. to lead a Bible study,

  562. and the only training

  563. that you've received

  564. is you've sat in church

  565. and watched someone else

  566. do it for a few years,

  567. that's like someone

  568. turning up and doing

  569. a cancer operation

  570. and says,

  571. well,

  572. I watched it on YouTube.

  573. What?

  574. You've got a scalpel,

  575. you're cutting into them,

  576. what are you doing?

  577. That's it.

  578. It happens in churches

  579. all the time,

  580. doesn't it?

  581. It means that we,

  582. as a church,

  583. need to take care

  584. who we appoint

  585. to be teaching elders,

  586. but also that we need

  587. to be serious

  588. about training others

  589. as well,

  590. ourselves and others.

  591. We need to turn up,

  592. we need to knuckle down,

  593. we need to listen carefully

  594. to feedback,

  595. we need to study hard,

  596. formally and formally.

  597. There's a research group

  598. called the Barna Research Group

  599. that suggested in 2024

  600. that the attrition rate

  601. of pastors leaving

  602. or wanting to leave

  603. their jobs

  604. in independent

  605. evangelical churches

  606. like ours

  607. is 50%.

  608. Like 50%

  609. of men in ministry,

  610. if you ask them

  611. would they like

  612. to quit their job,

  613. would tell you

  614. yes please,

  615. right?

  616. I mean,

  617. that is incredible.

  618. But if you take

  619. into consideration

  620. that and the average age

  621. of people in pastoral ministry,

  622. then churches like ours,

  623. and this was a back

  624. of an envelope

  625. kind of calculation,

  626. I think we probably

  627. need to be training up

  628. somebody every two years

  629. to send them

  630. into pastoral ministry.

  631. Because if we're not

  632. doing that,

  633. we will be running out

  634. of people to do ministry.

  635. In fact,

  636. I think you could make

  637. a good argument

  638. that for a church

  639. like ours in inner London,

  640. you know,

  641. there are twice as many

  642. young people living

  643. in inner London

  644. as there are

  645. in other parts

  646. of the country,

  647. means that we should

  648. be doing more of this

  649. than any other church.

  650. We should do twice

  651. as much of this

  652. because we have

  653. twice the opportunity.

  654. So a church like ours

  655. should invest heavily

  656. its money in providing

  657. training to men and women,

  658. not just for full-time roles,

  659. but for lay roles too.

  660. So that we might serve

  661. God's people for God's glory

  662. and for their good.

  663. And if we won't invest

  664. there as a church,

  665. we can expect to be in a mess

  666. because we're called

  667. to be road builders

  668. in a church where the Lord

  669. knows those who are his.

  670. That's the first illustration,

  671. road builder.

  672. Second illustration,

  673. housekeeper.

  674. Have a look down

  675. at verse 20.

  676. In a large house,

  677. there are articles

  678. not only of gold and silver,

  679. but also of wood and clay.

  680. Some are for special purposes

  681. and some for common use.

  682. Those who cleanse themselves

  683. from the latter

  684. will be instruments

  685. for special purposes,

  686. made holy,

  687. useful to the master

  688. and prepared to do

  689. any good work.

  690. Here the image then

  691. is a grand house

  692. with servants in it.

  693. And the servants

  694. have two kinds of tools

  695. at their disposal.

  696. They have dirty tools

  697. for dirty jobs

  698. and they have special tools

  699. for special jobs.

  700. Dirty tools like hammers,

  701. shovels, clay jars

  702. and the like

  703. and clean tools

  704. for fancy jobs

  705. like silver service implements,

  706. golden candelabras,

  707. goblets and the like.

  708. And the point is this,

  709. right?

  710. Be like the gold

  711. and silver tools,

  712. not like the wooden clay ones.

  713. What does that mean?

  714. Well, remember verse 19,

  715. the Lord knows those

  716. who are his

  717. and everyone who confesses

  718. the name of the Lord

  719. must turn away from wickedness.

  720. In other words,

  721. the point is

  722. God will get the job done,

  723. right?

  724. God knows who is his.

  725. God doesn't look at the church

  726. and go,

  727. oh, I'm not quite sure

  728. I know what I'm doing,

  729. right?

  730. God knows what he's doing

  731. and he will get the job done.

  732. He knows who his people are.

  733. God's mission is not threatened

  734. by false teachers

  735. and by bad workers

  736. in the church.

  737. No, the point is really

  738. that false teachers

  739. and bad workers

  740. in the church

  741. are like these

  742. wooden implements,

  743. clay implements.

  744. They're used by God

  745. for the dirty jobs

  746. and then discarded.

  747. You know,

  748. they're like the Assyrians

  749. in Isaiah chapter 7

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  750. who are used like a razor

  751. on the head of Israel,

  752. right?

  753. They are used

  754. despite themselves

  755. to accomplish

  756. the purposes of God

  757. or like the circumcision party

  758. in Acts 15

  759. who make the church

  760. much clearer

  761. on the gospel

  762. by disputing

  763. with the church

  764. on circumcision.

  765. You know,

  766. they're not seeking

  767. to serve God,

  768. they're serving themselves

  769. but nevertheless

  770. they accomplish God's purposes

  771. even unwittingly.

  772. The point is

  773. that false teaching

  774. in the church

  775. is not bad for God.

  776. It's bad for the false teacher

  777. and for those who listen

  778. and God's point here

  779. is don't be

  780. a wooden hammer,

  781. be a silver spoon.

  782. You know,

  783. don't unwittingly

  784. bash out God's plan,

  785. be a golden candelabra

  786. that holds the flame

  787. of the gospel brightly

  788. because the Lord

  789. knows those who are his

  790. and everyone who confesses

  791. the name of the Lord

  792. must turn away

  793. from wickedness.

  794. So turn away

  795. from wickedness.

  796. That's what God's people do

  797. and that's what you should do.

  798. I wonder sometimes

  799. whether we get confused

  800. by these warnings

  801. in the Bible.

  802. How can both

  803. those statements be true?

  804. How can the Lord

  805. know those who are his

  806. and accomplish

  807. all his purposes

  808. and at the same time

  809. warn us about disobedience?

  810. How can those things

  811. be true?

  812. Now,

  813. I think actually

  814. sometimes we get confused

  815. about this

  816. because we don't really listen.

  817. The point is

  818. that the warning

  819. will work

  820. if you listen to it

  821. even if

  822. you're listening

  823. to the warning

  824. is not necessarily

  825. related

  826. to the warning itself.

  827. Let me try and give you

  828. an example

  829. because that's confusing,

  830. isn't it?

  831. If I tell you,

  832. right,

  833. don't go play

  834. in the railway line,

  835. whether you listen

  836. to my warning

  837. of not playing

  838. in the railway line

  839. is probably related

  840. something to do

  841. with whether you think

  842. I'm sensible

  843. or a fool.

  844. I'll never listen

  845. to that Steve guy.

  846. What does he know

  847. about railways anyway,

  848. right?

  849. So you don't listen

  850. to the warning.

  851. But if you think,

  852. do you know what,

  853. Steve might be worth

  854. listening to.

  855. I know he's got

  856. some experience

  857. of railway lines.

  858. I don't actually,

  859. but you know,

  860. he's got some experience.

  861. He probably knows

  862. what he's talking about.

  863. I should listen

  864. to his warning.

  865. In that case,

  866. the warning works

  867. because of your

  868. relationship with me.

  869. God warns his people

  870. and it divides them

  871. between those who listen

  872. and the warning works

  873. and those who don't listen

  874. and therefore

  875. the warning doesn't work.

  876. And that's what's going on.

  877. The same is here.

  878. God tells you,

  879. cleanse yourself

  880. from being a tool

  881. of ignorance

  882. to be a tool of glory.

  883. You should listen.

  884. Be useful for good work.

  885. Be holy.

  886. Be special.

  887. And of course,

  888. whether or not you listen

  889. is not really related

  890. to the warning itself.

  891. It's related to your relationship

  892. with the Lord

  893. who gives the warning.

  894. So how then

  895. do we become

  896. useful,

  897. holy tools

  898. instead of

  899. sacrificial screwdrivers

  900. that we hit with a hammer

  901. when we've got a dirty job

  902. we want to do?

  903. Well,

  904. that's what Paul articulates

  905. in verse 22.

  906. Have a look down at it.

  907. I'll read it to you.

  908. Flee the evil desires of youth.

  909. Pursue righteousness,

  910. faith,

  911. love and peace

  912. along with those

  913. who call on the Lord

  914. out of a pure heart.

  915. Don't have anything to do

  916. with foolish

  917. and stupid arguments

  918. because you know

  919. they produce quarrels.

  920. And the Lord's servant

  921. must not be quarrelsome,

  922. must be kind to everyone,

  923. able to teach,

  924. not resentful.

  925. Opponents must be

  926. gently instructed

  927. in the hope

  928. that God will grant them

  929. repentance

  930. leading them to a knowledge

  931. of the truth

  932. so that they will

  933. come to their senses

  934. and escape from

  935. the trap of the devil

  936. who has taken them captive

  937. to do his will.

  938. Let's just work through

  939. those really briefly.

  940. Being useful to the Lord

  941. involves running

  942. from what Paul calls

  943. evil desires of youth.

  944. In the context

  945. that seems to be

  946. going in the opposite direction

  947. towards righteousness,

  948. faith,

  949. love and peace.

  950. So that to flee

  951. the youthful desires,

  952. the evil desires of youth

  953. is yes to run away

  954. from unrighteous sexual desire

  955. but it's more than that.

  956. We're to flee a desire

  957. for fame.

  958. We're to flee

  959. a desire for influence.

  960. We're to flee

  961. a desire for material wealth.

  962. We're to flee

  963. a desire for making

  964. a name for ourselves.

  965. We're to run after Jesus

  966. and do stuff out of faith

  967. in him

  968. and not confidence

  969. in ourselves.

  970. We're to run after

  971. loving others,

  972. laying down ourselves

  973. for their benefit,

  974. being willing to become less

  975. that they might become more.

  976. We're to run after peace

  977. and not disagreements.

  978. In verse 23,

  979. Paul spends longer

  980. on that, doesn't he?

  981. He says that churches

  982. are full of stupid arguments,

  983. foolish talk

  984. that leads to quarrels.

  985. And verse 24,

  986. the Lord's servant

  987. of gold and silver

  988. is not to be fighting

  989. with the sheep

  990. over stuff that doesn't matter.

  991. You've all met that

  992. kind of pick-a-fight

  993. pastor, right?

  994. Well,

  995. he's a jar of clay

  996. in a bad way,

  997. not in a one Corinthians way

  998. but in a bad,

  999. or two Corinthians way

1000. but in a bad way.

  1001. He's there

  1002. for ennobal purposes.

  1003. Actually,

  1004. you need a peace-loving pastor.

  1005. We're to be kind

  1006. to everyone

  1007. even when they disagree

  1008. with us.

  1009. We're to be able

  1010. to teach

  1011. because we're not

  1012. distracted by silly arguments

  1013. that can take away

  1014. from the point.

1015. And our hope is that

1016. not that we can change people

  1017. but,

  1018. verse 25,

  1019. look down at it,

  1020. that God might grant

  1021. repentance to people.

  1022. God is the one

  1023. that we trust in.

  1024. God is the one

  1025. doing the work,

  1026. turning people back

  1027. to him in knowledge

  1028. of the truth

  1029. and freedom

  1030. from the devil,

  1031. verse 23.

  1032. So here's the question

  1033. for you and me

  1034. for this morning,

  1035. right?

  1036. The question is not,

  1037. notice,

  1038. the question is not

  1039. will you be useful,

  1040. right?

  1041. You will be useful

  1042. because God uses

  1043. all things

  1044. for his purposes,

  1045. right?

  1046. That's a given.

  1047. All things work out

  1048. for the accomplishment

  1049. of God's purposes.

1050. That is not the question.

  1051. You know,

  1052. if you think

1053. you can stand in God,

  1054. it's like standing

  1055. on Brighton Beach,

  1056. stopping the tide

  1057. from coming in,

  1058. right?

  1059. Stop.

  1060. It's just going

  1061. to wash you away,

  1062. isn't it?

  1063. You can't stand

1064. in the way of God.

  1065. You can't stop

  1066. his purposes.

  1067. He's going to accomplish

  1068. his purpose

  1069. come what may.

  1070. Now,

  1071. that's not the question.

  1072. The question

  1073. is really this.

  1074. The question is,

  1075. are you going

  1076. to be a gold

  1077. or silver tool

  1078. or are you going

  1079. to be a wood

  1080. and clay one?

  1081. The question

  1082. isn't even,

  1083. are you a Christian

  1084. or not?

  1085. Because it seems

  1086. like in the context

  1087. it's possible

  1088. to be saved

  1089. and still

1090. to be a noble tool

1091. in the hand of God.

  1092. Think of the people

  1093. in 1 Corinthians 3

  1094. who were escaping

  1095. through the flames.

  1096. You see,

  1097. the question really,

  1098. I suppose,

1099. you put it this way,

  1100. do you want God

  1101. to use you

  1102. because of your desires

  1103. and your love

  1104. for his people

  1105. or despite

  1106. your lack of love?

  1107. Do you want

  1108. in your youthful,

  1109. sinful passion

1110. to pursue your own ends

  1111. and be frustrated

  1112. and waste your life

  1113. in causing irrelevant arguments

1114. on the edge of church

  1115. or do you want

  1116. to grow up

1117. and live for God's glory

  1118. and not your own?

  1119. What do you want?

  1120. Which will it be?

1121. It's not that you can

  1122. thwart God's purposes

1123. but you can waste your life,

  1124. right?

1125. You can ruin a church.

1126. You can squander your money.

1127. You can lead people astray.

  1128. You can rob yourself

  1129. of any assurance

  1130. that you're really a Christian.

1131. You can lose your joy

1132. or you could cleanse yourself

  1133. from all of that

1134. and press into the gospel of grace,

  1135. leaning in the strength

  1136. of the spirit,

  1137. making the most

  1138. of being discipled

  1139. and trained

  1140. that you might be

  1141. an instrument of gold

  1142. and silver

  1143. and the mission

1144. of God in the world.

1145. When I was at theological college,

  1146. I was lectured by a guy

  1147. called Mike Ovey

  1148. who died tragically

  1149. and very suddenly

  1150. a few years later.

  1151. He used to say,

1152. I want to make you

  1153. the best gift

  1154. to a local church

  1155. that I can.

  1156. That was his purpose.

  1157. I want you

1158. to be the best gift

  1159. you can be

  1160. to a local church.

  1161. He was under God

  1162. trying to make

  1163. wooden hammers

  1164. into silver spoons.

1165. That's what he was doing.

1166. And it's not just for pastors,

  1167. is it?

1168. It's for all of us.

  1169. Let's pray

1170. that God might cleanse us

  1171. from passion

  1172. for our own glory,

1173. for the praise of others,

  1174. that we might live

1175. for the glory of God alone,

  1176. follow him,

  1177. obey him,

1178. and be a golden tool

  1179. in the service

  1180. of our Lord

  1181. because the Lord

1182. knows those who are his

  1183. and everyone

  1184. who confesses

1185. the name of the Lord

  1186. must turn away

  1187. from wickedness.

  1188. Let me pray

  1189. as we close.

  1190. Heavenly Father,

  1191. how we thank you

  1192. that you have

  1193. an unstoppable purpose,

  1194. that you know

  1195. what you're doing,

  1196. you know who belongs

  1197. to you,

  1198. and you are accomplishing

  1199. all that you desire

  1200. in this world.

  1201. We want to pray,

  1202. please, Lord,

  1203. that you would

  1204. forgive us

  1205. where we've been

  1206. tricking ourselves,

  1207. pretending that we belong

1208. to you when we don't.

  1209. Forgive us,

  1210. have mercy on us,

  1211. purify our hearts,

  1212. we pray.

  1213. And we ask, Lord,

1214. that you might make us

  1215. into useful servants

1216. for the glory of your name.

1217. Help us to be these

  1218. approved workmen and women

1219. who live for your glory,

  1220. who handle the Bible

  1221. properly and truthfully

  1222. and teach it clearly.

  1223. Help us to avoid

  1224. godless chatter

  1225. or false teaching,

1226. but to present the gospel

  1227. clearly and faithfully

1228. that you might be at work

  1229. turning people

  1230. to trust in Christ

1231. and receive life in his name.

1232. As we pray in Jesus' name.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Thank you.
