  6. But I think, more than maybe any sermon that we have done throughout this entire series,

  7. that there is something in these verses for everyone in the room today.

  8. See, it doesn't matter where you are on the spectrum of faith, you've been a believer for a while,

  9. or you're coming into church for the very first time.

  10. I believe that you will be able to identify with one person in this message today.

  11. So let's go ahead and dive in.

  12. Today we're going to look at two categories that Paul lists in this passage.

  13. Adversaries and allies.

  14. And see, Paul lists two adversaries.

  15. These are people that were opposed to the gospel being spread in this passage.

  16. We will call them Demas the deserter and Alexander the antagonist.

  17. See, and Demas, we'll start with him.

  18. He is called the deserter because, well, he deserts Paul.

  19. And I think it's important for us to look at this and understand this.

  20. He is not just called the deserter because he leaves.

  21. There are many people that we will look at later in the sermon today that leave.

  22. But see, Demas is a deserter because if you look at verse 10 of what it says there.

  23. See, it says that Demas loved this world.

  24. Demas was no ordinary Roman.

  25. This was not a guy that Paul had just met on the street and become friends with.

  26. No, Demas was important to Paul.

  27. In Philemon 24, Paul says that Demas is a gospel worker with him.

  28. Twice in the New Testament, Demas is listed in the same breath as Luke,

  29. the gospel writer of Luke, and the book of Acts.

  30. See, through many trials, Demas has been with Paul.

  31. He has experienced the highs of ministry.

  32. He has fought through lows.

  33. But in the end, when Paul is desperate,

  34. when he needs somebody to be by his side,

  35. Demas deserted him.

  36. And I wonder if there is anyone in the room today that can relate to this.

  37. See, on the outside, you look like a Christian.

  38. You would be able to pass the test if there was one.

  39. You go to church.

  40. You do the golden rule.

  41. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

  42. You will like that rule.

  43. You know the Bible stories.

  44. If there was a quiz, you would pass it.

  45. But on the inside, your heart does not belong to God.

  46. Instead, it is in love with the world like Demas.

  47. See, you put more stock in what the world says than what the Bible says.

  48. Maybe that looks like relationships.

  49. We say, I said what the Bible said about relationships 2,000 years ago.

  50. That is great.

  51. But that has no pertaining on what I do today.

  52. See, I don't have to listen to what it says.

  53. I need to have sex before marriage now.

  54. Because, hey, the standards that the Bible puts in there, that's just not realistic anymore.

  55. I mean, we got to make sure we're compatible, right?

  56. Would you drive a car without taking it for a test drive first?

  57. Or maybe it's not relationships.

  58. But maybe it's time.

  59. So you chase success at the expense of time with God.

  60. You bargain with God and say, Lord, if there is any time left in the rest of the day, I will give it to you.

  61. But every time it comes to the end of the day, you end up not having any time for the Lord.

  62. And see, maybe it's not even your time, but maybe it is your family.

  63. So the work-life shambles in your life may be, or the work-life balance in your life may be in shambles.

  64. You would look and define success, how the world defines success.

  65. And you would define yourself more by what your boss thinks of you than your son.

  66. See, when push comes to shove in your life and a crisis comes, and trust me, there will be a crisis in life.

  67. What is going to come out of you, Christ or the world?

  68. See, we are all like sponges.

  69. We soak up what is around us.

  70. It may just be a 30-minute show here that we know we shouldn't watch, but it's just 30 minutes.

  71. Or maybe 15 minutes of a website we know we shouldn't visit, but hey, it's just 15 minutes.

  72. Or maybe we participate in a conversation that we know we shouldn't participate in.

  73. It's like, hey, I won't participate in the gossip part.

  74. I'll just listen.

  75. But like a sponge, we are soaking up what is around us.

  76. And so when we are squeezed, what comes out has occupied our heart.

  77. See, I'm going to make an assumption here about the passage.

  78. See, I don't think Demas meant to be a deserter.

  79. See, we have another category that we're going to talk about here in just one second of a person that is openly hostile to the gospel.

  80. So I don't think that's what Demas wanted to be.

  81. I don't think, was he running with Paul earlier throughout his ministry?

  82. He's going, ah, Paul, just you wait.

  83. Just you wait until you trust me.

  84. And then when you least expect it, when you need me the most, I'm going to stab you right in the back.

  85. I don't think that's what Demas wanted to do.

  86. And yet, is that not exactly what happens?

  87. So we have to ask the question, why?

  88. Why did this happen to Demas?

  89. It goes to the illustration that we were talking about.

  90. You can skip to the next slide.

  91. Because we're soaking up what is around us.

  92. See, Demas was surrounded by Paul.

  93. But instead of soaking up the rich doctrine that Paul was teaching,

  94. instead he was mesmerized by the ways of the world.

  95. And when things got tough and persecution started to happen,

  96. Demas did what made sense to him.

  97. And he ran.

  98. So the question, friends, in the room today, what are we soaking up?

  99. Are we going to be defined by the world's definition of success,

  100. and what the world wants to push on us?

  101. Or are we going to be defined by what Jesus says about us?

  102. So that's the first category of adversary.

  103. Let's move now to the second category.

  104. And that's Alexander the Antagonist.

  105. See, unlike Demas, who is with Paul and he turns his back on Paul,

  106. Alexander is an open enemy of Paul's preaching.

  107. We don't know a lot about Alexander.

  108. Unfortunately, it was a really common name back 2,000 years ago.

  109. But we do know that Alexander was doing everything that he possibly could

  110. to make sure that the mission of God was not accomplished through Paul.

  111. See, so much so that Paul, even in his letter to his young protege, Timothy,

  112. has to say,

  113. Hey, Timothy, watch out for this guy.

  114. He is not good.

  115. Do not trust him.

  116. He is a snake.

  117. He wants nothing more than to see you fail.

  118. And once again, I would ask the question,

  119. Is this someone in the room today?

  120. Maybe you're here just because a parent dragged you here.

  121. Maybe you're here because a co-worker invited you.

  122. Or maybe curiosity just got the better of you

  123. and you had to come in and see what it's all about.

  124. Can I say two things to you if you're in the room today?

  125. And that is you.

  126. Number one, welcome.

  127. Genuinely.

  128. The church for centuries has been a place where people come to find answers.

  129. West Kilburn, this church, wants to be that place in this community.

  130. So welcome in.

  131. And the second thing I want to ask is,

  132. How's it going?

  133. And not the how's it going that you say when you meet somebody,

  134. Hey, how's it going?

  135. You really don't care what their answer is.

  136. But the genuine, soul-searching question of how is it going in your life?

  137. See, the writer of this letter, Paul,

  138. he would have an answer to that question.

  139. And his answer would be,

  140. It's not going very well.

  141. See, Paul, just in the message prior to this,

  142. in the few verses prior,

  143. he said, Hey, my time is near.

  144. I've been beaten.

  145. I've been jailed.

  146. And I am about to die for the faith.

  147. He knows this.

  148. And yet, Paul's story makes even less sense

  149. when you realize that Paul went from a persecutor of the church

  150. to the position that he is in now.

  151. See, Paul is in the same shoes as Alexander is in this passage.

  152. He was in the same shoes as Alexander is in this passage.

  153. And if you are an antagonist of the gospel,

  154. he was in the same shoes as you are today.

  155. So what changed?

  156. How did a persecutor of the faith become one of the faith's greatest martyrs?

  157. Paul met Jesus.

  158. On the road to Damascus, the Lord changed Paul's life,

  159. and he could no longer live for himself

  160. because he found something greater to live for.

  161. And it changed everything.

  162. And now, when he is faced with the reality of death,

  163. Paul does not shrink back and hide,

  164. but instead he can sit there and proclaim the good news

  165. because it has changed his life,

  166. and he believes it can change yours too.

  167. See, if you look at the end of verse 14,

  168. the start of verse 14 there,

  169. see, Paul does not take retribution for Alexander into his own hands.

  170. See, he knows that God is the ruler of all things

  171. and that he has power over all things.

  172. And so, he says,

  173. Alexander, you are going to get what you deserve

  174. either in this life or the next.

  175. It does not matter to me.

  176. But there is one who is all-powerful

  177. who will take care of it all.

  178. And this begs the question,

  179. what would happen if we got what we deserved?

  180. If you want to answer that question today

  181. with the hope and assurance that Paul does,

  182. then you have to meet the same person that Paul met,

  183. and that's Jesus.

  184. So that the next time someone asks you the question,

  185. how's it going,

  186. you can say,

  187. well, it doesn't matter my circumstances.

  188. They could be really great.

  189. They could be really bad.

  190. But it doesn't matter

  191. because my hope is not in them.

  192. Instead,

  193. it is in the God

  194. that created the universe

  195. and changed Paul

  196. and then indeed changed me.

  197. So now we've looked at the adversaries.

  198. We've looked at the bad guys.

  199. Let's turn our attention now to the good guys

  200. because every good story ends with the good guys winning, right?

  201. Let's take a look.

  202. Let's read starting at the end of verse 10.

  203. Back at the verse.

  204. So there's a few guys that are listed here

  205. in the end of Paul's letter to 2 Timothy.

  206. So we're going to go through them

  207. and kind of get a better understanding of who they are.

  208. The first person is Crescens.

  209. And, well, sorry,

  210. we don't know a lot about him.

  211. So we're just going to have to skip right over Crescens.

  212. But the next three,

  213. the next person listed is Titus.

  214. And Titus is a part of a group

  215. that I will call T, TLC.

  216. Titus, Tychicus, Luke, and Carpus.

  217. And yes, these guys did indeed go chasing waterfalls

  218. instead of sticking to the lakes

  219. and the rivers that they're used to.

  220. But see, if you look at the credentials of these guys,

  221. you realize that they are just ordinary people.

  222. These guys were not Jews.

  223. They did not grow up studying under rabbis.

  224. But instead, they were just out in the world

  225. and started following Jesus.

  226. Through different circumstances.

  227. None of them would look exceptional

  228. in the eyes of the world.

  229. But yet, if you look at their resumes

  230. after the fact,

  231. you see that they had a huge impact for the gospel.

  232. All right, so out of T, T, L, and C,

  233. Carpus, again, is one of those guys

  234. that we just don't know a lot about.

  235. He's not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible.

  236. But the other three, Titus, Tychicus, and Luke,

  237. their legacies continue to this day.

  238. So let's start with Titus.

  239. Titus wasn't Paul's protege.

  240. He did not get that title.

  241. Instead, when you look at where Paul sends him

  242. instead of where he sends Timothy,

  243. you kind of think, Titus,

  244. you kind of got the bad end of the deal here.

  245. See, Timothy gets to go to this global city of Ephesus.

  246. And while it did have some of its problems,

  247. Ephesus is known as a place

  248. where some of the titans of the faith came from.

  249. Titus.

  250. Titus was sent as a messenger to the Corinthians.

  251. And if you've ever read 1 and 2 Corinthians,

  252. you know they had some problems.

  253. On top of that,

  254. Titus goes on a missionary journey with Paul to Crete.

  255. And Paul's like, great, I'm going to continue on.

  256. Titus, you stay here in Crete.

  257. The problem is the people in Crete,

  258. they were described as liars, lazy gluttons, and evil beasts.

  259. Not a great missionary assignment, huh?

  260. And then even in 2 Timothy here,

  261. while Paul is writing this letter,

  262. Titus is in modern-day Serbia,

  263. ministering and spreading the gospel to the people there.

  264. He never had a position of grandeur.

  265. He was just an ordinary guy following the Lord

  266. and obeying Paul when he told him to go.

  267. What about Luke?

  268. Luke has kind of the same story.

  269. He's a Gentile doctor.

  270. He accompanies Paul on his second missionary journey,

  271. and Paul leaves him behind in Philippi.

  272. And then Paul continues on throughout all of his journeys,

  273. doing all the great things that are written about in the gospel of Luke.

  274. You know where Luke is?

  275. Philippi.

  276. Paul doesn't come back and pick him up

  277. until his third missionary journey.

  278. Luke is just there.

  279. And then, you know what we hear about Luke after that?

  280. Not a lot.

  281. He just accompanies Paul.

  282. Luke is a trained doctor turned sojourner,

  283. and now, by all accounts in the world,

  284. he would look kind of like a failure, right?

  285. And then that comes to Tychicus.

  286. Tychicus is basically Paul's royal male.

  287. He takes a gift from the Corinthian church,

  288. takes it over to the Jerusalem church.

  289. He delivered various letters to various different churches.

  290. He helped unite a former slave to his former master.

  291. And then Tychicus is the one who gives Titus a break on Crete.

  292. And again, I ask the same question over again on purpose.

  293. I wonder, as we look here at this passage,

  294. as any one of us in the room can relate.

  295. See, we would just be going through life

  296. and feel very ordinary.

  297. Maybe it's a middling career.

  298. Life not quite going how we expected it when we were 25.

  299. Maybe, in all the accounts of the world,

  300. we would be considered a failure.

  301. These men that we read about here,

  302. by the accounts of the world,

  303. the world would say the same things.

  304. And yet, they are responsible for us being able to read

  305. approximately a third of the New Testament.

  306. See, because of Luke's proximity to Paul,

  307. he's able to write the Gospel of Luke in Acts.

  308. Because of Titus' obedience to the Lord,

  309. he's able to get a letter,

  310. while he was on that island of Crete,

  311. that we can read to this day,

  312. called Titus.

  313. And Tychicus.

  314. You don't have a book of Tychicus, do we?

  315. No, but Tychicus is responsible for delivering

  316. the letters of Ephesians,

  317. Colossians,

  318. Colossians,

  319. and more than likely this letter here to Timothy.

  320. Because of their obedience in the drudgery of life,

  321. we have the beautiful language of Jesus' birth

  322. in the Gospel of Luke.

  323. We have the rich theology of Christ,

  324. which can be found in Ephesians.

  325. And we can have a better understanding of eldership

  326. because of Paul's letter to Titus.

  327. None of this is possible without their obedience.

  328. Christian,

  329. in the room today,

  330. if you feel like you are suffering

  331. in the drudgery of life,

  332. take heart.

  333. Look around.

  334. There's a Canadian pastor,

  335. his name is Henry Blackaby,

  336. and he says,

  337. he's famous for saying this,

  338. watch to see where God is working

  339. and join him in his work.

  340. If you are stuck

  341. or feel like you are stuck

  342. in the Christian life,

  343. just going through the ordinary,

  344. stop.

  345. Look around.

  346. See where God is working around you

  347. and join him in that work.

  348. If nothing has come to mind right now

  349. as we've been saying this,

  350. can I show you a few avenues

  351. where God is working right here

  352. underneath our noses in this church?

  353. See,

  354. just yesterday,

  355. Andrew went out with a group of people

  356. from this church

  357. to meet our neighbors.

  358. They had conversations with people

  359. and were able to invite them to church.

  360. And people have come to church

  361. because of those conversations.

  362. Friends,

  363. join them in that work.

  364. What about this?

  365. You want something to be excited about?

  366. Okay,

  367. apparently not.

  368. We can skip that part.

  369. Do you want something

  370. to be excited about, church?

  371. There it is.

  372. Do you know that we,

  373. the Sunday school

  374. happening right back here,

  375. do we have,

  376. no,

  377. we have more kids

  378. back there

  379. than truthfully

  380. we know what to do with?

  381. Join them

  382. in that work.

  383. Where you are sitting

  384. right now,

  385. we have over,

  386. about 10 to 20 moms and nannies

  387. that come every Friday

  388. and hear the gospel

  389. in our time for tots.

  390. Join them

  391. in that work.

  392. Or,

  393. just take a look around.

  394. Take a look around

  395. at who is here

  396. in the building today.

  397. We have more people

  398. coming regularly

  399. to Sunday mornings

  400. here at West Kilburn

  401. than in recent memory.

  402. But this is not

  403. an opportunity

  404. for us to pat ourselves

  405. on the back

  406. and say,

  407. hey, look at us.

  408. We did a good job,

  409. didn't we?

  410. But instead,

  411. this should spur us

  412. to look around the room,

  413. see that we don't know

  414. everybody in the room,

  415. and get to know people.

  416. We should join

  417. community groups

  418. with the idea

  419. of getting to know people.

  420. We should invite

  421. other people

  422. out to lunch

  423. because we don't know

  424. everyone here.

  425. We should just

  426. try to make friends.

  427. A weird concept

  428. I know,

  429. and hard sometimes

  430. as an adult.

  431. But important,

  432. right?

  433. See,

  434. church should never

  435. just be a service

  436. you attend,

  437. but it should be

  438. a family

  439. that you are a part of.

  440. There are plenty

  441. of spaces

  442. where God

  443. is working

  444. in this church

  445. alone.

  446. Join him

  447. in that work.

  448. All right,

  449. as we move

  450. to a close,

  451. I want to talk

  452. about one more

  453. person in this

  454. passage.

  455. Unfortunately,

  456. I don't have

  457. enough time

  458. to talk about

  459. Morphing Mark,

  460. who's kind of

  461. got the opposite

  462. story of Demas,

  463. but instead,

  464. we're going to

  465. talk about the

  466. writer of this

  467. letter.

  468. We'll call him

  469. Persevering Paul.

  470. And see,

  471. last week,

  472. if you were here,

  473. we got to

  474. understand Paul's

  475. mindset in this

  476. moment as he's

  477. writing this letter.

  478. See,

  479. Paul knows

  480. that his life

  481. is about to be

  482. over.

  483. He knows

  484. he has just

  485. days or weeks

  486. left until his

  487. race is finished.

  488. Just before this,

  489. if you look in

  490. verse 6,

  491. it says,

  492. For I am already

  493. being poured out

  494. like a drink

  495. offering,

  496. and the time

  497. for my departure

  498. is near.

  499. See,

  500. Paul experienced

  501. a lot while he

  502. was on earth.

  503. On top of his

  504. redemption arc

  505. of going from

  506. an enemy of the

  507. church to one

  508. of the church's

  509. biggest champions,

  510. he also suffered

  511. greatly for the

  512. gospel.

  513. Earlier in his

  514. letter to Timothy,

  515. he writes,

  516. You know all

  517. about my

  518. endurance,

  519. persecutions,

  520. sufferings.

  521. Paul gives us

  522. a snapshot of

  523. those sufferings

  524. in another letter

  525. where he says,

  526. I have been

  527. whipped five

  528. times.

  529. That's 39

  530. times.

  531. Times five.

  532. Not going to do

  533. that quick maths.

  534. He's been

  535. beating with

  536. rods three

  537. times.

  538. He's been

  539. stoned,

  540. shipwrecked

  541. three times,

  542. not getting on

  543. a boat with

  544. Paul,

  545. and on and

  546. on and on

  547. it goes.

  548. If there's

  549. anybody in

  550. the world

  551. that could have

  552. mailed it in

  553. in the last

  554. few weeks,

  555. it should have

  556. been Paul,

  557. right?

  558. He is in a

  559. dark,

  560. damp cell.

  561. He is cold.

  562. He is alone.

  563. Gotta say,

  564. Paul, my

  565. guy, call

  566. it a day.

  567. Just relax

  568. a bit.

  569. You said so

  570. yourself.

  571. You have

  572. fought the

  573. fight.

  574. You have

  575. finished the

  576. race.

  577. That's past

  578. tense.

  579. Just phone

  580. it in.

  581. What does

  582. it matter?

  583. But what

  584. does Paul

  585. do?

  586. In the

  587. last few

  588. weeks of

  589. his life,

  590. Paul is

  591. embodying

  592. what he

  593. said earlier

  594. to Timothy

  595. in 2

  596. Timothy 2.

  597. Entrust

  598. this good

  599. news.

  600. entrust

  601. this gospel

  602. to reliable

  603. people so

  604. they can

  605. go and

  606. teach

  607. others.

  608. In his

  609. last few

  610. weeks,

  611. Paul is

  612. sending

  613. missionaries,

  614. arranging

  615. visits,

  616. and pastoring

  617. Timothy,

  618. all in this

  619. letter here.

  620. If you

  621. remember back

  622. when we even

  623. started this

  624. series in 2

  625. Timothy,

  626. we said one

  627. of the

  628. major things

  629. that is

  630. going to

  631. carry

  632. throughout

  633. this entire

  634. book is

  635. perseverance.

  636. perseverance.

  637. Paul is

  638. modeling that

  639. for us

  640. right here.

  641. If life

  642. was a

  643. marathon,

  644. Paul is

  645. not limping

  646. towards the

  647. finish line

  648. saying,

  649. oh,

  650. please get

  651. me out

  652. of this.

  653. Instead,

  654. he is

  655. pushing to

  656. the last

  657. mile,

  658. giving

  659. everything

  660. he has

  661. until he

  662. breaks the

  663. tape trying

  664. to get

  665. his best

  666. time.

  667. See,

  668. if you

  669. were here

  670. last week,

  671. we talked

  672. about keep

  673. the faith,

  674. which is the

  675. verses prior to

  676. what we just

  677. read.

  678. And by

  679. keep the

  680. faith,

  681. we were

  682. talking about

  683. that Paul

  684. means to

  685. pass it

  686. on to the

  687. next

  688. generation.

  689. Steve,

  690. the pastor

  691. of this

  692. church,

  693. he encouraged

  694. older members

  695. of the

  696. church to

  697. pass the

  698. torch,

  699. to empower

  700. the next

  701. generation,

  702. and I

  703. completely

  704. agree.

  705. I think

  706. that's

  707. exactly what

  708. Paul shows

  709. us in

  710. those verses.

  711. But if you

  712. are an

  713. older saint

  714. in this

  715. room,

  716. can I

  717. encourage you

  718. with this?

  719. See,

  720. just because

  721. you have

  722. passed the

  723. faith on,

  724. that doesn't

  725. mean that you

  726. are no

  727. longer a

  728. part of

  729. the team.

  730. That doesn't

  731. mean that you

  732. get to sit

  733. in the stands

  734. and watch

  735. as a fan

  736. and then

  737. collect your

  738. pension and

  739. say,

  740. woo,

  741. good job.

  742. God calls

  743. the church

  744. a body,

  745. and if we

  746. are going

  747. to operate

  748. to the

  749. best of

  750. our ability,

  751. we need

  752. every member

  753. to operate

  754. so that we

  755. can operate

  756. at our

  757. best.

  758. So yes,

  759. we've got to

  760. let young

  761. leaders lead.

  762. That is

  763. absolutely

  764. true.

  765. But are we

  766. doing that

  767. from the

  768. sidelines

  769. while we

  770. are critiquing

  771. every single

  772. move that

  773. they make,

  774. criticizing

  775. every mistake

  776. that they

  777. do,

  778. or are we

  779. trying to

  780. get involved

  781. with them?

  782. Are we

  783. actively

  784. seeking to

  785. disciple these

  786. young leaders

  787. and carry out

  788. their vision

  789. like you wish

  790. somebody would

  791. have carried

  792. out yours when

  793. you were in

  794. their place?

  795. And younger

  796. people in

  797. the room,

  798. you don't

  799. get off the

  800. hook.

  801. Don't you

  802. dare for

  803. one second

  804. think that

  805. these older

  806. Christians have

  807. nothing to

  808. offer for you.

  809. When they

  810. speak,

  811. listen.

  812. Get to

  813. know them.

  814. Ask

  815. insightful

  816. questions.

  817. It's

  818. important.

  819. what Paul

  820. is kind

  821. of pointing

  822. us towards

  823. here.

  824. Let's wrap

  825. it up with

  826. this.

  827. When people

  828. ask me the

  829. question,

  830. how has it

  831. gone when

  832. you have

  833. been merging

  834. churches,

  835. I tell them

  836. the truth.

  837. I know,

  838. slightly

  839. dangerous,

  840. right?

  841. But I

  842. genuinely say

  843. the truth.

  844. I say it

  845. has been

  846. hard.

  847. There have

  848. been more

  849. challenges,

  850. honestly,

  851. than I

  852. thought.

  853. But more

  854. than anything,

  855. it is a

  856. blessing.

  857. Because now,

  858. more than

  859. ever in

  860. this community,

  861. we look

  862. like the

  863. family of

  864. God.

  865. See,

  866. if someone

  867. was to

  868. sit across

  869. Carlton

  870. Vale at

  871. the bus

  872. stop out

  873. there at

  874. 11,

  875. 1107

  876. a.m.

  877. and see

  878. the people

  879. that are

  880. coming in,

  881. they would

  882. see young

  883. and old,

  884. rich and

  885. poor,

  886. black and

  887. white,

  888. and everywhere

  889. in between,

  890. gathering as

  891. one family

  892. of God.

  893. You have

  894. to ask the

  895. question why.

  896. To which we

  897. get to answer

  898. because we

  899. worship a

  900. Savior that

  901. died for

  902. all people,

  903. was resurrected

  904. for all

  905. people,

  906. and loves

  907. all people.

  908. people.

  909. So this

  910. is the

  911. question

  912. before us

  913. today,

  914. church.

  915. We look

  916. the part

  917. of a

  918. family.

  919. Are we

  920. going to

  921. act the

  922. part?

  923. See,

  924. we look

  925. like a

  926. family now,

  927. but are we

  928. going to

  929. do the

  930. hard work

  931. required to

  932. keep us

  933. a family?

  934. Are we

  935. going to

  936. look to

  937. see where

  938. God is

  939. working and

  940. join him

  941. in that

  942. work,

  943. spreading the

  944. gospel to

  945. our neighbors

  946. outside,

  947. and getting

  948. to know the

  949. people inside

  950. this building,

  951. are we

  952. going to

  953. put our

  954. desires above

  955. the Lord's?

  956. See,

  957. Paul,

  958. he knew

  959. the church

  960. would be

  961. flawed.

  962. Read any

  963. of his

  964. letters,

  965. you can get

  966. that pretty

  967. quick.

  968. He knew

  969. the church

  970. would be

  971. full of

  972. sinners that

  973. make mistakes.

  974. Anyone want

  975. to raise

  976. their hand

  977. on that

  978. one?

  979. But he

  980. also knew

  981. that the

  982. church was

  983. God's

  984. plan A

  985. for

  986. reaching

  987. the

  988. lost

  989. and

  990. discipling

  991. saints.

  992. And so,

  993. when it

  994. came to

  995. the end

  996. of his

  997. life,

  998. he knew

  999. that the

  1000. best thing

  1001. for him

  1002. to do

  1003. and to

  1004. give his

  1005. life to

  1006. was the

  1007. church,

  1008. and he

  1009. did it

  1010. until he

  1011. was completely

  1012. poured

  1013. out.

  1014. God.

  1015. So what

  1016. are we

  1017. pouring

  1018. ourselves

  1019. out for?

  1020. A better

  1021. flat on

  1022. the property

  1023. ladder?

  1024. Maybe it's

  1025. the approval

  1026. of our

  1027. family.

  1028. Maybe we're

  1029. pouring ourselves

  1030. out for a

  1031. better retirement

  1032. plan.

  1033. Or are we

  1034. pouring ourselves

  1035. out to

  1036. further the

  1037. kingdom that

  1038. will last

  1039. forever?

  1040. Titus,

  1041. Tychicus,

  1042. Luke,

  1043. Carpus,

  1044. Timothy,

  1045. Paul.

  1046. They had

  1047. their answer.

  1048. What's

  1049. yours?

  1050. Let's

  1051. pray.

  1052. Father in

  1053. heaven,

  1054. thank you.

  1055. Thank you

  1056. for your

  1057. word,

  1058. Lord,

  1059. that doesn't

  1060. return void.

  1061. Thank you

  1062. for your

  1063. son.

  1064. who gave

  1065. the ultimate

  1066. sacrifice so

  1067. that even in

  1068. this moment

  1069. we know

  1070. that if we

  1071. just ask,

  1072. Lord,

  1073. we can come

  1074. to faith in

  1075. him.

  1076. Lord,

  1077. I pray for

  1078. us as a

  1079. church that

  1080. this would

  1081. not be the

  1082. greatest moment

  1083. that our

  1084. church has

  1085. had.

  1086. That we

  1087. would not

  1088. look back

  1089. at this

  1090. past year,

  1091. six months,

  1092. and say,

  1093. hey,

  1094. these are

  1095. going to be

  1096. the highlights

  1097. that people

  1098. will remember

  1099. and talk

  1100. about as

  1101. the quote

  1102. unquote

  1103. good old

  1104. days.

  1105. But instead,

  1106. I pray that

  1107. we will

  1108. continue to

  1109. work together

  1110. as one

  1111. family,

  1112. move together

  1113. as one

  1114. body,

  1115. spreading your

  1116. word,

  1117. Lord,

  1118. until we

  1119. are a light

  1120. among the

  1121. darkness

  1122. here in

  1123. Kilburn and

  1124. Queens Park.

  1125. Lord,

  1126. help us to

  1127. get to know

  1128. each other.

  1129. Help us to

  1130. step out of

  1131. our comfort

  1132. zones.

  1133. And help

  1134. us,

  1135. more than

  1136. anything,

  1137. to praise

  1138. you.

  1139. Pray this

  1140. in your name.

  1141. Amen.

  1142. Amen.

  1143. Yes.

  1144. Thank you.
