  1. A reading from Psalms 8, page 546.

  2. What is mankind that you are mindful of them?

  3. Human beings that you care for them.

  4. You have made them a little lower than the angels

  5. and crowned them with glory and honor.

  6. You made them rulers over the works of your hands.

  7. You put everything under their feet,

  8. all flocks and herds and the animals of the wild,

  9. the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea,

  10. all that swim the paths of the seas.

  11. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name

  12. in all the earth.

  13. Amen.

  14. That's great.

  15. Thank you for reading for us, Elle.

  16. Do turn in your Bibles to Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  17. which we're going to refer to Psalm 8 briefly,

  18. but do turn to Genesis 1.

  19. It's right at the beginning of your Bibles.

  20. Like I said with the children,

  21. we've been looking over these summer weeks

  22. at the doctrine of creation.

  23. So not so much working through Genesis 1 to 3,

  24. verse by verse,

  25. but looking at the themes of creation,

  26. what does it mean that God made the world?

  27. So we looked at the God who made the world

  28. and we thought about that together.

  29. What is God like?

  30. We then looked at the world that God made.

  31. What kind of world did God make?

  32. We realized that he made the world to be with us.

  33. And this week we're thinking about humanity,

  34. the people that God made.

  35. And next week we're going to be looking at the fall,

  36. what went wrong in the world that God made.

  37. So let me pray and ask for the Lord's help

  38. as we come to his word.

  39. Let's pray.

  40. Heavenly Father,

  41. it would be very easy for us

  42. just to think of this as a human exercise

  43. for me trying to pass information from my brains

  44. into the brains of those people in front of me.

  45. But Lord, that's not what's going on here.

  46. These are your words.

  47. And we, all of us,

  48. me and everyone else,

  49. are sitting to listen to you.

  50. We long, Lord,

  51. not just to learn new ideas,

  52. but to hear your voice.

  53. We long to be conformed to the likeness of Jesus.

  54. We long to live lives of purpose and meaning

  55. and significance for his praise and his glory.

  56. So be with us and help us, we ask in Jesus' name.

  57. Amen. Amen.

  58. Now, I think probably one of the most important

  59. Christian books of the last 10 years

  60. was a book called Love Thy Body.

  61. Nancy Peercy, who's the author,

  62. points out in the book that

  63. most people in the West

  64. now think very differently

  65. to their grandparents

  66. or certainly their great-grandparents

  67. about issues such as abortion

  68. or euthanasia

  69. or marriage

  70. or gender

  71. or sex and sexuality.

  72. Now, that's not that surprising,

  73. isn't it?

  74. We all know that.

  75. In fact,

  76. if the most important Christian book

  77. of the last 10 years

  78. just told you that,

  79. then any of us in this room

  80. could have written it,

  81. couldn't we?

  82. But we didn't.

  83. And Nancy Peercy is brighter than all of us.

  84. Probably most of us all put together as well.

  85. But actually,

  86. the thing that comes through from that book,

  87. which is really fascinating,

  88. is that the reason behind those changes,

  89. the reason that you and I think differently

  90. or most people around us

  91. will think differently

  92. to their grandparents on these issues,

  93. is because of one single change

  94. that's behind them all,

  95. a fundamental shift in our thinking.

  96. In other words,

  97. new ideas about marriage,

  98. gender, sex, abortion,

  99. and euthanasia are,

  100. she says,

  101. symptoms of a deeper change,

  102. a deeper shift in thinking.

  103. And Peercy argues

  104. that it's a shift

  105. in what we think it means

  106. to be human.

  107. Now, forgive me

  108. for just going into the detail

  109. of this this morning,

  110. but it is important for us.

  111. We, all of us,

  112. whether you call yourself

  113. a Christian or not this morning,

  114. all of us have lived

  115. and are living

  116. through a period

  117. of massive cultural change.

  118. And it is largely driven

  119. by this shift in thinking

  120. about what it means

  121. to be human.

  122. It means for most people now,

  123. being human is understood

  124. by splitting apart

  125. two things

  126. which have traditionally

  127. been held together,

  128. are certainly held together

  129. in Christian theology.

  130. The West today tells us

  131. that our physical bodies

  132. and our minds

  133. are separate from one another

  134. and that actually

  135. our minds

  136. and our feelings

  137. and our perceptions

  138. are primary

  139. and our bodies

  140. are secondary.

  141. And that mind first,

  142. body later shift

  143. means that

  144. if you want to know

  145. what your life is for,

  146. what is the purpose

  147. of your existence,

  148. you look not at your body

  149. but you look to your mind.

  150. What are your feelings?

  151. How do you think?

  152. Think about it like this with me

  153. and this is Piercy's illustration,

  154. not mine,

  155. so if you don't like it

  156. you can pick it up with her.

  157. But imagine a car and a driver.

  158. The car is the means

  159. of getting from A to B

  160. but the rule and the decision

  161. and the purpose

  162. come from the driver of the car.

  163. And in modern thinking now,

  164. your body is just a car

  165. that your mind is driving.

  166. The body is sort of a container

  167. for the real you.

  168. It is not the real you.

  169. And sometimes,

  170. in contemporary thought at least,

  171. the car is an unreliable one.

  172. It needs a few modifications

  173. to make it suit

  174. the driver's preferences.

  175. Now think about how that works.

  176. If your mind is you

  177. and your body is just the container,

  178. then it means, doesn't it,

  179. that if somebody has

  180. a mind that is damaged

  181. but a body that is functional,

  182. maybe because of age

  183. or dementia or disability

  184. or perhaps because

  185. they're an unborn child

  186. who is not yet capable

  187. of articulating thoughts

  188. and feelings,

  189. in contemporary speak

  190. you are less

  191. than someone who is

  192. of sound mind.

  193. And so what can you do?

  194. Well, you are able,

  195. under certain circumstances,

  196. to dispose of those

  197. with bodies

  198. without functioning minds,

  199. which of course is abortion

  200. and euthanasia.

  201. Nancy Pearcey gives other examples.

  202. She gives the example

  203. of sexuality.

  204. She says,

  205. you know,

  206. think about when

  207. the sexual desires

  208. of your mind

  209. don't match up

  210. with the sexual makeup

  211. of your body.

  212. Which one wins?

  213. Your body

  214. or your mind?

  215. Now for centuries

  216. it's been our bodies

  217. but now of course

  218. it's our minds

  219. and that's why marriage

  220. has been redefined.

  221. Or what about

  222. if you find yourself

  223. drawn to the particular

  224. cultural stereotypes

  225. that go along with a gender

  226. that doesn't match your body?

  227. Do you follow your mind

  228. or do you follow your body?

  229. Well, the shift in thinking

  230. says the mind should win.

  231. The mind is more important

  232. than the body.

  233. Your mind is telling the truth,

  234. your body is lying

  235. and needs to be corrected

  236. or rejected

  237. or just ignored.

  238. Now I realise

  239. the danger of starting here

  240. is that this is all

  241. very theoretical, isn't it?

  242. This is all in the ideas

  243. of sort of philosophy

  244. and worldview.

  245. But we're not really

  246. in that realm, are we?

  247. This shift in how we think

  248. about what it means

  249. to be human

  250. has lots of deeply

  251. personal effects on us.

  252. I don't think there's

  253. anybody in this room

  254. who remains unaffected

  255. by this shift in thinking.

  256. It's impacted

  257. not only people

  258. that we love

  259. but it's also become

  260. confusing for ourselves.

  261. You know,

  262. what are we supposed

  263. to say to children

  264. when they come home

  265. from school telling us

  266. that they feel like

  267. they're in the wrong body?

  268. That's how they've been told

  269. to understand themselves.

  270. Or what do we do

  271. when family members

  272. start putting in place

  273. plans for assisted suicide

  274. in the face of sickness?

  275. What do we do

  276. when feelings and desires

  277. that we have personally,

  278. that our grandparents

  279. would have told us

  280. to resist,

  281. we're now told

  282. that we must act on them

  283. for our own good?

  284. It's a confusing

  285. and painful world

  286. to live in.

  287. And so as we come

  288. to Genesis 1 and 2

  289. this morning

  290. and we're going

  291. to think about

  292. what it means

  293. to be human

  294. in God's definition,

  295. we are in the kind

  296. of world of ideas

  297. and theories

  298. but we are also

  299. boots on the ground

  300. in real life.

  301. I want to show you

  302. from Genesis 1 to 3

  303. that the definition

  304. of being human

  305. from here

  306. gives you the possibility

  307. of a richer,

  308. deeper,

  309. more fulfilling life

  310. than anything

  311. the world has to offer.

  312. In fact,

  313. I think I'd go

  314. as far as to say

  315. that it is impossible

  316. for any of us

  317. in this room

  318. to flourish as people

  319. without understanding

  320. God's definition

  321. of what it means

  322. to be human

  323. from Genesis 1 and 2.

  324. So let's get into this.

  325. Let me start off

  326. with a definition

  327. of being human

  328. from Genesis 1 and 2

  329. and then I'm going

  330. to break it down

  331. for you.

  332. This I think

  333. is a fair summary

  334. of what we will find

  335. in these chapters

  336. that a human being

  337. is both body

  338. and spirit,

  339. either male

  340. or female

  341. and always made

  342. in the image

  343. of God.

  344. We're going to just

  345. look at those

  346. three main parts

  347. and then I'm going

  348. to think about

  349. some applications

  350. for us.

  351. The first one

  352. is body and spirit.

  353. A human being

  354. is both body

  355. and spirit.

  356. Now you'll know

  357. if you were with us

  358. last week

  359. that Genesis 1

  360. and Genesis 2

  361. both contain

  362. the creation account

  363. with different

  364. camera angles on it

  365. and we are told

  366. in chapter 2

  367. verse 7

  368. that the Lord God

  369. formed a man

  370. from the dust

  371. of the ground

  372. and breathed

  373. into his nostrils

  374. the breath of life

  375. and the man

  376. became a living

  377. being.

  378. Here we see

  379. the two interwoven

  380. components

  381. of a person.

  382. Flesh

  383. from the dust

  384. and life

  385. from the breath

  386. of God.

  387. Body

  388. and spirit.

  389. And it's the

  390. combination

  391. of those things

  392. together

  393. which make us

  394. a living being.

  395. It's worth noting

  396. that the word

  397. for living beings

  398. is the same

  399. as the word

  400. for living creature

  401. in chapter 1

  402. verse 20

  403. and 21

  404. and 24

  405. is the word

  406. translated

  407. the breath of life

  408. in chapter 1

  409. verse 30.

  410. So in the first sense

  411. the idea here

  412. is that to be human

  413. is to possess

  414. a living

  415. animated

  416. thinking

  417. sensing

  418. perceiving

  419. flesh

  420. like an animal.

  421. But there is also

  422. a unique dignity

  423. that means that

  424. human beings

  425. are distinct

  426. from the other

  427. living beings.

  428. The breath of God

  429. is breathed in

  430. personally

  431. in verse 7

  432. through the nose.

  433. It seems to be

  434. an indication

  435. of the proximity

  436. of God.

  437. His breath

  438. was focused.

  439. It's not a

  440. gust of wind

  441. that just happens

  442. to pass by.

  443. And then again

  444. in the creation

  445. of woman

  446. from the side

  447. of man

  448. God

  449. fashions her

  450. from the rib

  451. and brings her

  452. to the man.

  453. An idea

  454. which gets

  455. expanded on

  456. of humanity

  457. being made

  458. in the image

  459. of God

  460. which we're

  461. going to consider

  462. in a moment.

  463. But for now

  464. just see that

  465. God didn't

  466. just make minds

  467. and then

  468. put them

  469. into bodies

  470. but God

  471. made us

  472. bodies and minds

  473. living beings

  474. people of both

  475. body and spirit.

  476. The body

  477. is the person.

  478. It's not so much

  479. a car

  480. and a driver.

  481. I was trying to think

  482. of what's an alternative

  483. illustration to a car

  484. and a driver.

  485. I couldn't really think

  486. of one but here you go.

  487. It's more like a

  488. flying carpet

  489. where body and spirit

  490. are the interwoven

  491. fabric of the carpet.

  492. Right?

  493. They are

  494. they are intimately

  495. involved with one

  496. another.

  497. A mind cannot be

  498. trapped in the wrong

  499. body because the

  500. body and the mind

  501. are so close together

  502. that it's not possible.

  503. Of course it's true

  504. isn't it?

  505. In a post-fall world

  506. and we'll think about

  507. this next week

  508. that it is possible

  509. for our spirits

  510. to be separated

  511. from our bodies

  512. our souls

  513. to live separate

  514. from our bodies

  515. in the glories

  516. of heaven

  517. as we wait

  518. for the return

  519. of Christ.

  520. But the Christian hope

  521. is not a bodiless

  522. existence floating

  523. around in the sky

  524. the Christian hope

  525. is the hope

  526. of the resurrection

  527. of the body

  528. the physical return

  529. of Jesus Christ

  530. to this earth

  531. in his resurrection

  532. body

  533. to raise our bodies

  534. that they may be

  535. reunited

  536. with our souls

  537. to live with him

  538. in a physical universe.

  539. But it's worth

  540. pondering this

  541. isn't it?

  542. The Bible

  543. is unashamed

  544. of your body

  545. not because the Bible

  546. is immodest

  547. God covers the

  548. nakedness of his people

  549. in Genesis 3

  550. we'll find next week

  551. but all the same

  552. God does not think

  553. that your body

  554. is embarrassing

  555. or dirty

  556. or to be ignored.

  557. Genesis 1 and 2

  558. contradicts the idea

  559. that how you are made

  560. has nothing to say

  561. about what your life

  562. is for.

  563. God has designed

  564. your body

  565. and has given it

  566. to you

  567. to teach you

  568. what your life

  569. is for.

  570. You are mind

  571. and body

  572. body and soul

  573. and when God

  574. comes to save

  575. he comes

  576. in the person

  577. of the son

  578. who clothes himself

  579. in flesh

  580. like ours

  581. not just

  582. so that he can die

  583. although of course

  584. that is central

  585. to his mission

  586. dying for sin

  587. and for salvation

  588. that he might

  589. forgive us

  590. for our sins

  591. but also

  592. for the purpose

  593. of resurrection

  594. too

  595. a physical presence

  596. that God

  597. might be with us

  598. in body.

  599. So we are made

  600. body and spirit

  601. secondly

  602. we are male

  603. and female

  604. look back at chapter 1

  605. verse 27

  606. so God created

  607. mankind in his own

  608. image

  609. in the image of God

  610. he created them

  611. male and female

  612. he created them

  613. again this is linked

  614. to what it means

  615. to be made

  616. in the image of God

  617. and we are coming

  618. to that in a moment

  619. but let's notice

  620. this distinction

  621. between men and women

  622. that is woven

  623. into creation

  624. from the beginning

  625. here in chapter 1

  626. as humanity

  627. is made in the same time

  628. in chapter 1

  629. and then in chapter 2

  630. made independently

  631. with the woman

  632. being fashioned

  633. by God

  634. from the rib

  635. of man

  636. Matthew Henry

  637. the commentator

  638. famously pointed out

  639. 300 years ago

  640. that woman

  641. was made not

  642. from the foot

  643. of man

  644. to be downtrodden

  645. nor from the head

  646. to rule over him

  647. but from the side

  648. to walk alongside him

  649. whether that's the meaning

  650. of the rib

  651. is debatable

  652. but the point is

  653. that the distinction

  654. between the sexes

  655. is not to do

  656. with cultural stereotypes

  657. there are no

  658. cultural stereotypes

  659. in Genesis 1 and 2

  660. right

  661. no one's written

  662. a piece of music

  663. yet

  664. no one has built

  665. a building

  666. no one has done

  667. any art

  668. yet there is no

  669. cultural stereotypes

  670. football was not

  671. invented yet

  672. ballet had not

  673. been done yet

  674. okay so there's no

  675. cultural stereotypes

  676. with which God

  677. makes man and woman

  678. rather he makes

  679. them male and female

  680. the distinction

  681. is a distinction

  682. given by God

  683. so that man and woman

  684. are by definitions

  685. given to them

  686. by him

  687. sorry that was a

  688. completely confusing

  689. sentence

  690. the definition

  691. of man and woman

  692. was given to them

  693. by God

  694. which are biologically

  695. present in every cell

  696. of their bodies

  697. you know so that

  698. despite the huge

  699. similarity between us

  700. as men and women

  701. the difference is

  702. literally watermarked

  703. in us

  704. all the way through us

  705. again this is really

  706. precious the more

  707. you think about it

  708. you know the shift

  709. that we've experienced

  710. in contemporary culture

  711. this splitting apart

  712. of the body and the mind

  713. that we were thinking

  714. about

  715. means that the world

  716. asks our children

  717. don't they

  718. are you a boy or a girl

  719. how do you feel

  720. what do you think

  721. what are you more

  722. drawn to

  723. and then they're

  724. medicated to make

  725. their bodies conform

  726. to the decision

  727. that their immature

  728. mind has made

  729. and we call that

  730. freedom

  731. but it's actually

  732. oppression

  733. and the bible

  734. comes along with

  735. true freedom

  736. doesn't it

  737. and says listen

  738. God made you

  739. he made you

  740. and he loves you

  741. he's made you

  742. body and spirit

  743. male or female

  744. now go and explore

  745. how you can bring

  746. glory to him

  747. and that is

  748. wonderfully liberating

  749. it's wonderfully

  750. precious

  751. as we're made

  752. with that kind

  753. of dignity

  754. so humanity

  755. is made

  756. body and spirit

  757. we're made

  758. male or female

  759. next we are made

  760. in the image

  761. of God

  762. now we could

  763. spend ages on this

  764. because really

  765. if you want a headline

  766. for what the bible

  767. says about it

  768. means what it means

  769. to be human

  770. you could just say

  771. it means we are

  772. made in the image

  773. of God

  774. a human being

  775. is the image

  776. of God

  777. so look back

  778. at chapter 1

  779. verse 26

  780. then God said

  781. let us make

  782. mankind

  783. in our image

  784. in our likeness

  785. so that they may

  786. rule over the fish

  787. of the sea

  788. and the birds

  789. in the sky

  790. over the livestock

  791. and over all

  792. the wild animals

  793. and over all

  794. the creatures

  795. that move along

  796. the ground

  797. so God created

  798. mankind

  799. in his own

  800. image

  801. in the image

  802. of God

  803. he created them

  804. male and female

  805. he created them

  806. God blessed them

  807. and said to them

  808. be fruitful

  809. and increase in number

  810. fill the earth

  811. and subdue it

  812. rule over the fish

  813. in the sea

  814. and the birds

  815. in the sky

  816. and over every

  817. living creature

  818. that moves

  819. in the ground

  820. now notice here

  821. that being in the image

  822. of God

  823. is a unique dignity

  824. afforded to humanity

  825. alone

  826. so that all creation

  827. reflects the glory

  828. of the one who made it

  829. but humanity

  830. is uniquely

  831. made in the image

  832. of God

  833. this is really important

  834. it is not so much

  835. that humanity

  836. carry the image

  837. of God

  838. people sometimes

  839. use the word

  840. that we are image

  841. bearers

  842. but it's more than that

  843. we are ourselves

  844. the image of God

  845. think about it like this

  846. it's not like

  847. someone says to you

  848. what does God look like

  849. you pull out a picture

  850. in your pocket

  851. and say you know

  852. this is what God

  853. looks like

  854. you wouldn't do that

  855. with God

  856. because you can't

  857. take a picture

  858. of God

  859. maybe your father

  860. what does your father

  861. look like

  862. and you pull a picture

  863. out your pocket

  864. it's not that

  865. you're not carrying

  866. an image of God

  867. you are the image

  868. of God

  869. what does your father

  870. look like

  871. he looks like me

  872. you can see him

  873. in me

  874. and that's what's

  875. going on here

  876. uniquely humanity

  877. carry in themselves

  878. the image of God

  879. it seems doesn't it

  880. in the context

  881. that this image

  882. is related to the purpose

  883. that humanity

  884. are given

  885. according to verse 26

  886. it's so that they might

  887. rule they are made

  888. to be ambassadors

  889. in God's world

  890. stewarding and caring

  891. for what he has made

  892. they're to continue

  893. this gardening work

  894. that was started

  895. by God in chapter 2

  896. verses 5 and 6

  897. this is what

  898. El read for us

  899. in Psalm 6

  900. Psalm 8

  901. isn't it

  902. verse 6

  903. you made them

  904. rulers over the work

  905. of your hands

  906. this is how God

  907. has made us

  908. you put everything

  909. under their feet

  910. all flocks

  911. and herds

  912. and the animals

  913. of the wild

  914. the birds in the sky

  915. and the fish in the sea

  916. all that swim

  917. the paths

  918. of the seas

  919. God hands responsibility

  920. to humanity

  921. uniquely responsible

  922. for the world

  923. that God has made

  924. and they are accountable

  925. to God

  926. for stewarding his creation

  927. again we're going to see

  928. more of this next week

  929. but they are given rules

  930. by which to do it

  931. in other words

  932. being God's image

  933. means doing his work

  934. in righteous ways

  935. doing it in conformity

  936. to the commands

  937. that he has given them

  938. naming the creatures

  939. forming and filling

  940. the garden

  941. in a way

  942. that all the other

  943. living creatures

  944. are incapable of

  945. it also seems

  946. that this image

  947. though is something

  948. that is done

  949. by the complementarity

  950. of male and female

  951. it seems that

  952. it is impossible

  953. on their own

  954. for a man

  955. or a woman

  956. to reflect the image

  957. of God

  958. in quite the same way

  959. as that they're able

  960. to together

  961. it is the diversity

  962. in men and women

  963. that is made

  964. to reflect the diversity

  965. of father son

  966. and spirit

  967. it is man

  968. and woman

  969. who are the image

  970. of God

  971. as the writer

  972. of Genesis

  973. Moses

  974. points out

  975. in chapter 2

  976. verses 24 and 25

  977. if you glance over

  978. to that

  979. he's there got

  980. a little editorial

  981. note about what

  982. marriage is

  983. he says the two

  984. become one flesh

  985. not just for their

  986. own pleasure

  987. but as they serve

  988. this greater good

  989. of reflecting God

  990. to creation

  991. Adam and Eve

  992. come together

  993. and bear children

  994. and work the garden

  995. as father son

  996. and spirit

  997. united together

  998. have created

  999. the universe

  1000. so Adam

  1001. can't do

  1002. what God

  1003. has given

  1004. him to do

  1005. without a woman

  1006. which means

  1007. not only that

  1008. man and woman

  1009. are equal

  1010. image bearers

  1011. but that it is

  1012. their unity

  1013. which brings

  1014. the image of God

  1015. even more apparent

  1016. now we could spend

  1017. longer on that

  1018. I've whistled through

  1019. those three

  1020. things

  1021. we are made

  1022. body and spirit

  1023. male or female

  1024. and we're made

1025. in the image of God

  1026. now those things

  1027. stand in stark contrast

  1028. to how the world

  1029. defines what it means

  1030. to be human

1031. but let me pull out

  1032. three specific

  1033. applications for us

  1034. I want to talk

  1035. about dignity

  1036. I want to talk

  1037. about authority

1038. and I want to talk

  1039. about community

  1040. so let's start

  1041. with dignity

  1042. I want to suggest

  1043. to you that

  1044. actually everybody

  1045. loves the idea

  1046. of dignity

  1047. don't they

  1048. we all want

  1049. to be treated

  1050. personally

  1051. we want to be

  1052. treated with

  1053. dignity

  1054. even the famous

  1055. euthanasia clinic

  1056. is called

  1057. dignitas

  1058. it's this idea

  1059. of dignity

  1060. but really

1061. I want to tell you

  1062. that it's only

  1063. Genesis 1 and 2

  1064. that gives you

  1065. an account

  1066. of the dignity

  1067. that we have

  1068. as humans

  1069. I don't know

  1070. whether you know

  1071. but what your body

  1072. is made up of

  1073. right

  1074. 60% of our bodies

  1075. is made up

  1076. of just water

  1077. right

  1078. 16% of us

  1079. is protein

  1080. 16%

  1081. give or take

  1082. a little bit

  1083. is fat

  1084. and 6%

  1085. is minerals

  1086. and then a few

  1087. other bits

  1088. alongside it

  1089. now according

  1090. to the internet

  1091. which is a source

  1092. of absolute

  1093. reliability

  1094. the price

  1095. of those

  1096. constituent parts

  1097. is 78 pounds

  1098. 66 pence

  1099. if you wanted

  1100. to buy

  1101. the elements

  1102. that make up

  1103. a human being

  1104. it would cost you

  1105. 78 pounds

  1106. 66 pence

  1107. that is if you're

  1108. using a particularly

  1109. expensive form

  1110. of hydrogen

  1111. as well

  1112. if you were prepared

  1113. to just use

  1114. water from the tap

  1115. it would cost you

  1116. about 35 quid

  1117. which is a bargain

  1118. right

  1119. in other words

  1120. because the value

  1121. of our bodies

  1122. has very little

  1123. to do with our

  1124. constituent parts

  1125. right

  1126. that the value

  1127. of humanity

  1128. is a value

  1129. that is assigned

  1130. to it

  1131. from outside

  1132. of itself

  1133. not something

  1134. that springs

  1135. from itself

  1136. because of what

  1137. it's made of

  1138. now that might

  1139. be a bit complicated

  1140. it's really important

1141. so let me give you

  1142. an example

  1143. imagine for a moment

  1144. you collect autographs

  1145. that's not a thing

  1146. anyone does anymore

  1147. is it

  1148. you collect selfies

  1149. now

  1150. but right

  1151. okay

  1152. imagine that you

  1153. collected autographs

1154. and so you came to me

1155. in a moment of weakness

  1156. because you're really

  1157. struggling

  1158. right

  1159. you came to me

  1160. and said

1161. will you sign my autograph

1162. so I sign your autograph

  1163. yeah I'll sign that

  1164. you know

1165. and you take my autograph

  1166. right

1167. and then you walk out

  1168. church

  1169. and you see

  1170. Stormzy walking down

  1171. the street

  1172. and you go

  1173. I know him

  1174. he got an honorary

  1175. ! PhD from Cambridge

  1176. this week

  1177. did you know that

  1178. or was it Oxford

  1179. one of the two

  1180. anyway

  1181. and you go

  1182. I know him

  1183. I'm going to get

  1184. his autograph as well

1185. so he signs your book

  1186. right

  1187. now

  1188. those two pages

  1189. in your book

  1190. are worth

  1191. exactly the same amount

  1192. right

  1193. Steve

  1194. Stormzy

  1195. similar length

  1196. right

  1197. so there's a similar

  1198. amount of ink

  1199. on the page

  1200. the constituent elements

  1201. of those two pieces

  1202. of paper

  1203. are worth

  1204. exactly the same

  1205. but which is more

  1206. important to you

  1207. which is more precious

  1208. of course it's Stormzy's

  1209. isn't it

1210. because of who he is

  1211. he has signed it

  1212. it carries

  1213. his signature

  1214. there is an assigned

  1215. value to that page

  1216. which is higher

  1217. than the value

  1218. of the page

  1219. that I signed

  1220. because of who

  1221. wrote it

  1222. and that's the same

  1223. here isn't it

  1224. God has assigned

  1225. a value to humanity

  1226. which is greater

  1227. than the 35 pounds

  1228. that it would cost

  1229. to make us

  1230. because we have

  1231. his signature

  1232. on us

  1233. we are signed

  1234. by the one

  1235. who made us

  1236. and that is where

  1237. our dignity

  1238. comes from

1239. we are from the dust

  1240. aren't we

  1241. without the animating

  1242. work of God

1243. that is all we are

  1244. but in Genesis 1 and 2

  1245. humanity is given

  1246. a dignity beyond

  1247. the value

  1248. of its elements

  1249. as a reflection

1250. of the glory of God

  1251. God had his fingerprints

  1252. all over us

  1253. and we are called

  1254. good

  1255. very good

  1256. by the God

  1257. who made us

  1258. in his image

  1259. now importantly

  1260. that dignity

  1261. belongs to us

1262. regardless of who we are

  1263. right

  1264. regardless of what

  1265. we've done

  1266. regardless of

  1267. where we are from

  1268. an unborn child

  1269. carries that same

  1270. dignity

1271. as you or I do

  1272. that the person

  1273. who is lost

  1274. in dementia

  1275. has that same

  1276. dignity

1277. that you or I do

  1278. because it is

  1279. assigned to them

  1280. by God

  1281. it's not because

  1282. of what they are

  1283. capable of

  1284. it is because

  1285. of whose image

  1286. they were made in

  1287. so it's not

  1288. just wrong

  1289. to kill the

  1290. unborn child

  1291. because it is

  1292. a real baby

  1293. it is wrong

  1294. to kill the child

  1295. because they are

  1296. created in the image

  1297. of God

  1298. and they carry

  1299. the divine dignity

  1300. euthanasia is

  1301. wrong

  1302. because even

  1303. when you are

  1304. lost in dementia

  1305. or you are facing

1306. the end of your life

  1307. through a terminal

  1308. illness

  1309. you still carry

  1310. the dignity

  1311. of God

  1312. assigned to us

  1313. made in his image

  1314. there are loads

  1315. more implications

  1316. of that aren't there

1317. let me just pull out

  1318. one to you

  1319. which I think

  1320. is particularly

  1321. important for us

  1322. think about racism

1323. we live in a world

  1324. blighted by racial

  1325. discrimination

  1326. don't we

  1327. where people's

  1328. experience of life

  1329. has often been

  1330. dictated to them

  1331. by the colour

  1332. of their skin

  1333. or the cultural

  1334. heritage that they're

  1335. from

  1336. the story of

  1337. humanity

  1338. has tragic

  1339. chapters

  1340. of enslavement

  1341. and colonisation

  1342. now I would imagine

  1343. that if you spoke

  1344. to almost anybody

  1345. in London

  1346. if you spoke

  1347. to someone

  1348. on the bus

  1349. which you're not

  1350. really supposed to do

1351. but you can do it

  1352. if you want to

  1353. speak to someone

  1354. on the bus

1355. and you said to them

  1356. what do you think

  1357. about racism

  1358. I think 99%

  1359. of people would

  1360. tell you that they

  1361. they are bored

  1362. they think it's a

  1363. terrible thing

  1364. they think it's wrong

  1365. if you then say

  1366. to them

  1367. why

  1368. they're going

  1369. to be stumped

  1370. why is it wrong

  1371. why is it wrong

  1372. to treat people

  1373. differently based

  1374. on the colour

  1375. of their skin

  1376. if we are not

  1377. made by God

  1378. in the image

  1379. of God

  1380. if we are just

  1381. here by chance

  1382. and really it is

  1383. selfish self-interest

  1384. which defines

  1385. what the human life

  1386. is for

  1387. the mind

  1388. ruling

  1389. trying to get

  1390. its own way

  1391. and making

  1392. everyone else

  1393. conform to what

  1394. my mind says

  1395. if that's the story

  1396. and there is no

  1397. assigned dignity

  1398. to people

  1399. then racism

  1400. can't be wrong

  1401. but if the truth

  1402. is that

  1403. we were created

  1404. by God

  1405. assigned dignity

  1406. by the one

  1407. who made us

  1408. who loves

  1409. the difference

  1410. and the distinction

  1411. in the world

  1412. that he's made

  1413. in fact

  1414. is especially

  1415. glorified

  1416. by that distinction

  1417. then of course

  1418. racism is wrong

  1419. not only because

  1420. it's an offence

  1421. to the person

  1422. who's receiving it

  1423. but because it's

  1424. an offence

  1425. to the God

  1426. who made them

  1427. we're precious

  1428. you know

  1429. our church

  1430. should be the

  1431. safest place

  1432. in the world

  1433. to be

  1434. and to be

  1435. who you are

  1436. because we know

  1437. that everyone

  1438. in this room

  1439. is precious

  1440. because we are

  1441. signed

  1442. by the God

  1443. of glory

  1444. who made us

  1445. with dignity

  1446. secondly

  1447. authority

  1448. authority

  1449. notice here

  1450. that God

  1451. made humanity

  1452. with a purpose

  1453. of ruling

  1454. over creation

  1455. they're given

  1456. this subordinate

  1457. authority

  1458. over what he's

  1459. made

  1460. and actually

  1461. those two things

  1462. go together

  1463. don't they

  1464. it is

  1465. it is

  1466. as Adam

  1467. and Eve

  1468. submit

  1469. to God

  1470. and his rule

  1471. that they gain

  1472. authority

  1473. over what he

  1474. has made

  1475. we're going to

  1476. think about that

  1477. some more

  1478. what went wrong

  1479. next week

  1480. but it means

  1481. doesn't it

  1482. that life

  1483. has a purpose

  1484. right

  1485. life has been

  1486. given to you

  1487. to me

  1488. that we might

  1489. continue

  1490. what God

  1491. has started

  1492. in creation

  1493. that we might

  1494. fail

  1495. subdue

  1496. and rule

  1497. over creation

  1498. now obviously

  1499. you don't need me

  1500. to tell you

  1501. that idea

  1502. has been

  1503. massively abused

  1504. is it

  1505. we don't have

  1506. the sort of

  1507. privilege of

  1508. pillaging creation

  1509. for whatever we

  1510. desire

  1511. there's a sense

  1512. of stewardship

  1513. and responsibility

  1514. that's given here

  1515. but still God

  1516. has given us

  1517. work to do

  1518. not as a punishment

  1519. but as a blessing

  1520. creation does not

  1521. need to be left

  1522. to go to wild

  1523. it needs humanity

  1524. to garden it

  1525. it's a blessing

  1526. to creation

  1527. and it's part

  1528. of following him

  1529. you know the garden

  1530. in the bible

  1531. becomes

  1532. you know we get

  1533. excluded from it

1534. but then as you go

  1535. on in the story

  1536. it becomes

  1537. you know a camp

  1538. a settlement

  1539. a town

  1540. a city

  1541. a nation

  1542. a global economy

  1543. as humanity

  1544. in a very broken

  1545. way

  1546. are carrying on

  1547. with this work

  1548. of filling

  1549. and subduing

  1550. the earth

  1551. we have this

  1552. collective

  1553. responsibility

  1554. not as ultimate

  1555. authority

  1556. but as subordinate

  1557. with what is called

  1558. the cultural mandate

  1559. now that means

  1560. loads of different

  1561. things doesn't it

  1562. but amongst other

  1563. things

  1564. I don't know

  1565. where you're going

  1566. to find yourself

  1567. tomorrow

  1568. what is it you're

  1569. going to be doing

  1570. tomorrow

  1571. maybe you're going

  1572. to work

  1573. maybe you don't

  1574. like your job

  1575. very much

  1576. maybe you're going

  1577. to be at home

  1578. and you know

  1579. that you've got

  1580. chores to do

  1581. you've got washing

  1582. to fold

  1583. tomorrow

  1584. you've got

  1585. meals to cook

  1586. for people

  1587. it means doesn't it

  1588. that actually

  1589. God is interested

  1590. in even those

  1591. things

  1592. and those things

  1593. are an opportunity

1594. for us to live out

  1595. the lives that he's

  1596. given us

1597. by doing a good job

  1598. by organising

  1599. our little corner

  1600. of creation

  1601. by folding the washing

  1602. tidying the flat

  1603. serving those around us

  1604. that is our opportunity

  1605. to bring God glory

  1606. it's fascinating

  1607. isn't it

1608. if in the world's eyes

  1609. this idea of splitting

1610. your mind and your body

  1611. means that what

1612. the purpose of your life

1613. is to think really hard

  1614. about what it is

  1615. that you want

  1616. and there you will

  1617. find your purpose

  1618. if Genesis 1 and 2

  1619. are true

  1620. then what you find

  1621. is actually

  1622. your job is to

  1623. reflect who

  1624. God is

  1625. in the way

  1626. that he's made you

  1627. and use that

  1628. as an opportunity

  1629. to serve those

  1630. around you

  1631. and there you

  1632. will find purpose

  1633. and it's a much

  1634. more satisfying

  1635. way to live

  1636. finally

  1637. community

  1638. we don't have loads

  1639. of time left

  1640. to go into this

  1641. but let's try

  1642. and discover it quickly

  1643. notice humanity

  1644. are not only made

  1645. for relationship

  1646. with God

1647. we saw that last week

  1648. don't we

  1649. are made to be

  1650. with him

  1651. but we are also

  1652. made for relationship

  1653. with one another

  1654. look down at

  1655. chapter 2

  1656. verse 18

  1657. the Lord God

  1658. said

  1659. it is not good

  1660. for the man

  1661. to be alone

  1662. I will make

  1663. a helper

  1664. suitable

  1665. for him

  1666. now that I think

  1667. is an easily

  1668. misunderstood verse

  1669. what is not good

  1670. I don't think

  1671. it's loneliness

  1672. it's not just

  1673. that he looks

  1674. at man and says

  1675. it is sad

1676. that he's on his own

  1677. when in verse 20

  1678. it says that

  1679. no suitable

  1680. helper is found

  1681. it's not about

  1682. companionship

1683. so much as it is

  1684. about service

  1685. it's really here

  1686. about being able

  1687. to do

  1688. and to be

  1689. what God

  1690. has called

  1691. Adam to be

  1692. and to do

  1693. Adam on his own

  1694. is unable

  1695. to fill

  1696. and subdue

  1697. creation

  1698. he needs

  1699. a suitable

  1700. helper

  1701. he needs

  1702. a woman

  1703. so that together

  1704. they can work

  1705. not just on the

  1706. garden

  1707. but also on the

  1708. procreation

  1709. that will be

  1710. needed to fill

  1711. the earth

  1712. now we don't

  1713. have time

  1714. to uncover

  1715. all of the

  1716. Bible's teaching

  1717. on sex

  1718. marriage

  1719. and singleness

  1720. and it's more

  1721. nuanced than

  1722. what's just

  1723. in Genesis 1

  1724. and 2

  1725. it's changed

  1726. by the fall

  1727. it's changed

  1728. and transformed

  1729. actually by

  1730. the need for

  1731. people to hear

  1732. of Jesus

  1733. which actually

  1734. is even more

  1735. important isn't it

  1736. and again we're

  1737. going to consider

  1738. that more in a

  1739. moment

  1740. but the main

  1741. point here is

  1742. that we cannot

  1743. be truly human

  1744. on our own

  1745. we need one

  1746. another

  1747. not just in

  1748. marriage

  1749. but we need

  1750. friendships

  1751. we need

  1752. co-workers

  1753. filling the earth

  1754. and subduing the

  1755. earth is not

  1756. something we can

  1757. do on our own

  1758. not just because

  1759. of procreation

  1760. but also because

  1761. of the need

  1762. for community

  1763. and fellowship

  1764. and friendship

  1765. and working

  1766. alongside one

  1767. another

  1768. in fact it

  1769. seems that

  1770. living the good

  1771. life is for

  1772. the benefit

  1773. of others

  1774. this is what

  1775. we're made

  1776. for

  1777. communities

  1778. of mutual

  1779. benefit

  1780. where we put

  1781. the needs

  1782. of one another

  1783. ahead of our

  1784. own

  1785. not the survival

  1786. of the fittest

  1787. but support

  1788. for the weakest

  1789. body and spirit

  1790. man or woman

  1791. in the image

  1792. of God

  1793. dignity

  1794. authority

  1795. and community

  1796. now just as we

  1797. finish

  1798. return to this

  1799. massive cultural

  1800. shift that we

  1801. have lived

  1802. through

  1803. a shift

  1804. that's risen

  1805. from this

  1806. redefinition

  1807. of what it

  1808. means to be

  1809. human

  1810. I want you

  1811. to see

  1812. that the

  1813. basic

  1814. difference

  1815. between

  1816. what the

  1817. world says

  1818. it means

  1819. to be

  1820. human

  1821. and what

  1822. the Bible

  1823. says it

  1824. is to be

  1825. human

  1826. is the

  1827. presence

  1828. of God

  1829. right

  1830. what the

  1831. world has

  1832. effectively

  1833. done

  1834. is it's

  1835. pushed God

  1836. out of the

  1837. definition

  1838. of what

  1839. it means

  1840. to be

  1841. human

  1842. and what

  1843. we think

  1844. we've done

  1845. is we've

  1846. lost God

  1847. and gained

  1848. ourselves

  1849. what we've

  1850. really done

  1851. is we've

  1852. lost God

  1853. and we lost

  1854. ourselves

  1855. with him

  1856. and so

  1857. really in

  1858. order to be

  1859. truly human

  1860. you need

  1861. not only to

  1862. understand

  1863. how God

  1864. made you

  1865. and what

  1866. God made

  1867. you for

  1868. you also

  1869. need to

  1870. know

  1871. God

  1872. that's

  1873. what Genesis

  1874. 1 and 2

  1875. are saying

  1876. you know

  1877. without God

  1878. without his

  1879. image in us

  1880. you will not

  1881. really be able

  1882. to understand

  1883. dignity

  1884. authority

  1885. or community

  1886. you'll have

  1887. scraps of them

  1888. because you've

  1889. got leftovers

  1890. of them

  1891. glimmers of

  1892. them

  1893. but you won't

  1894. have the real

  1895. thing

  1896. and that means

  1897. doesn't it

  1898. that the need

  1899. of our world

  1900. your need

  1901. this morning

  1902. whether you'd

  1903. call yourself

  1904. a Christian

  1905. or not

  1906. your need

  1907. my need

  1908. this morning

  1909. is I need

  1910. God in my

  1911. life

  1912. I need to

  1913. know the

  1914. Lord

  1915. to know

  1916. myself

  1917. I need

  1918. to know

  1919. the one

  1920. who made

  1921. me

  1922. and of

  1923. course

  1924. as I

  1925. think about

  1926. that

  1927. I think

  1928. that's

  1929. really

  1930. difficult

  1931. how can

  1932. how can

  1933. I know

  1934. God

  1935. I know

  1936. that I've

  1937. lived my

  1938. life for

  1939. myself

  1940. I know

  1941. that I've

  1942. lived as if

  1943. I could

  1944. live perfectly

  1945. well without

  1946. God

  1947. and I've

  1948. lost myself

  1949. as a result

  1950. how can

  1951. I possibly

  1952. invite

  1953. God

  1954. back into

  1955. my life

  1956. well the

  1957. good news

  1958. of the

  1959. gospel

  1960. is that

  1961. God

  1962. hasn't

  1963. waited

  1964. for you

  1965. to come

  1966. and meet

  1967. with him

  1968. he knew

  1969. he'd never

  1970. do that

  1971. he has

  1972. come to

  1973. meet

  1974. with us

  1975. God

  1976. the son

  1977. took on

  1978. human

  1979. flesh

  1980. he was

  1981. born

  1982. into

  1983. this

  1984. world

  1985. coming

  1986. to

  1987. meet

  1988. us

  1989. and

  1990. forgive

  1991. us

  1992. liberating

  1993. us

  1994. not only

  1995. from our

  1996. crazy

  1997. definitions

  1998. of

  1999. humanity

  2000. but also

  2001. from the

  2002. weight

  2003. of guilt

  2004. that piles

  2005. up

  2006. from using

  2007. this

  2008. life

  2009. that God

  2010. has given

  2011. us

  2012. for the

  2013. purposes

  2014. of

  2015. selfishness

  2016. God

  2017. creates

  2018. us

  2019. in his

  2020. image

  2021. he saves

  2022. us

  2023. by taking

  2024. on ours

  2025. being born

  2026. as a

  2027. man

  2028. dying

  2029. on a

  2030. cross

  2031. that we

  2032. might find

  2033. ourselves

  2034. in knowing

  2035. him

  2036. let me pray

  2037. and then we'll

  2038. sing

  2039. loving

  2040. heavenly

  2041. father

  2042. we thank

  2043. you so

  2044. much

  2045. that our

  2046. preciousness

  2047. is a

  2048. gift from

  2049. you

  2050. thank you

  2051. that every

  2052. person in

  2053. this room

  2054. has your

  2055. fingerprints

  2056. all over

  2057. them

  2058. and so we

  2059. want to pray

  2060. please that you

  2061. would help us

  2062. to find

  2063. ourselves

  2064. in knowing

  2065. you

  2066. we pray

  2067. especially

  2068. maybe for

  2069. people in
