  1. Good morning everyone. The reading today is going to be from John chapter 1 to 32.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given his son Joseph.

  4. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well.

  5. It was about noon.

  6. When the Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her,

  7. Will you give me a drink? His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.

  8. The Samaritan woman said to him, You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman.

  9. How can you ask me for a drink? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

  10. Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink,

  11. you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.

  12. Sir, the woman said, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep.

  13. Where can you get this living water?

  14. Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself,

  15. as did his sons and his livestock?

  16. Jesus answered, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.

  17. But whoever drinks of the water I give them will never thirst.

  18. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water, welling up to eternal life.

  19. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.

  20. He told her, Go, call your husband and come back.

  21. I have no husband, she replied.

  22. Jesus said to her, You are right when you say you have no husband.

  23. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband.

  24. What you have said is quite true.

  25. Sir, the woman said, I can see that you are a prophet.

  26. Our ancestors worshipped on the mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is Jerusalem.

  27. Woman, Jesus replied, Believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father,

  28. neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

  29. You Samaritans worship what you do not know.

  30. We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

  31. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the spirit and in truth,

  32. for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.

  33. God is spirit and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.

  34. The woman said, I know that Messiah.

  35. Christ, called Christ, is coming.

  36. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.

  37. Then Jesus declared, I, the one speaking to you, I am he.

  38. Just then, his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman.

  39. But no one asked, what do you want or why are you talking with her?

  40. Then leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,

  41. Come, see a man who told me everything I've ever done.

  42. Could this be the Messiah?

  43. They came out of the town and made their way towards him.

  44. Meanwhile, his disciples urged him, Rabbi, eat something.

  45. But he said to them, I have food to eat that you know nothing about.

  46. Then his disciples said to each other, could someone have bought him food?

  47. My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

  48. Don't you say, don't you have a saying, it is still four months until harvest?

  49. I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields.

  50. They are ripe for harvest.

  51. Even now, the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life.

  52. So that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.

  53. Thus the saying, one sows and another reaps, is true.

  54. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for.

  55. Others have done the hard work and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.

  56. May God bless his word.

  57. Good morning, Wes Kilburn.

  58. Good morning.

  59. So we're going to start our series.

  60. Let me get a timer on here really quick.

  61. We're going to start and restart our series.

  62. It was called Encounters with Jesus.

  63. So we've been going through the Book of Romans.

  64. Don't worry, next week Steve will be back to look at the Book of Romans again.

  65. But we're going to take a slight reprieve here.

  66. And we're going to talk about encounters with Jesus.

  67. Now, I don't know about you, but whenever I meet somebody,

  68. somebody new, I can't help but compare myself to them.

  69. This happened actually just this week when I was playing basketball.

  70. There was a guy that normally doesn't come.

  71. He was new this week.

  72. So I normally play with a group.

  73. About 15 to 20 of us play basketball on a Thursday.

  74. And there was this guy that came that was new this week.

  75. And so automatically you start making comparisons, right?

  76. I saw him and I saw him start to warm up.

  77. And I went, hey, you know, this guy, he's pretty good at basketball.

  78. But automatically my brain went to something very skeptical.

  79. And I was like, well, he's good right now, but we haven't started playing.

  80. So maybe, maybe we'll see how this translates into the game.

  81. Very quickly, I went from skeptical to practical because he was put on the other team.

  82. And I was the one that was tasked with guarding him.

  83. So very practically, I thought, okay, I got to know, you know, how's he shoot?

  84. Where is he going to go?

  85. How does he drive?

  86. So I was thinking very practically about this, these types of things.

  87. One time up and down the court, I went from practical to beneficial.

  88. I was thinking, hey, you know, actually this will be quite good for me.

  89. You know, the level of skill or my basketball, my basketball excellence,

  90. I'm like right in the middle.

  91. I'm not very good.

  92. Okay, so you need to know that before we continue on with the rest of the story.

  93. But I'm also not like terrible.

  94. I'm just like right there in the middle.

  95. And so I was going, you know what, this will be good for me.

  96. You play against somebody that's better than you.

  97. You'll say, okay, you know, iron sharpens iron here.

  98. You know, I'll be better.

  99. And as I was thinking this, I went from beneficial, that thought process,

  100. to what I stayed in the rest of the night, which is what we'll call surrender.

  101. Because as I was thinking, oh, this will be very beneficial for me,

  102. I just got down to guard him.

  103. And then all of a sudden, the next thing I knew, he was behind me scoring a goal.

  104. So you don't need to know a lot about basketball to realize that's not very good.

  105. So quickly, I found out, and the rest of my teammates found out as well,

  106. that I should not be guarding that guy.

  107. And so I guarded somebody else.

  108. So that quickly went from, this will be good for me, to, yeah, I'm going to guard somebody else.

  109. So that is the surrender response.

  110. Today, in our story, here in John 4, we're going to say that the woman at the well,

  111. she has these four responses as well when she meets Jesus.

  112. See, she's going to move from being skeptical of Jesus,

  113. to thinking very practically about Jesus,

  114. to thinking how he can be beneficial before she finally surrenders to him.

  115. And when she surrenders to him, just like me at basketball,

  116. she will get a new assignment as well.

  117. But this one is going to be greater than anything she could imagine.

  118. So let's dive into the passage.

  119. Let's start here in verses 1 through 6.

  120. Verses 1 through 6 basically give us a snapshot of what had been happening before.

  121. As I said, it's been a little while since we have been in our encounters with Jesus series.

  122. But if you remember, the last time that I preached,

  123. we were talking about Nicodemus, right?

  124. And Nicodemus was a Jewish Pharisee who wanted to figure out

  125. what does it mean to be born again?

  126. Well, Jesus had been spreading this good news and this gospel

  127. of what it means to be born again all throughout Jerusalem.

  128. And, well, it kind of became a problem.

  129. It was not very safe for him to stay in Jerusalem anymore.

  130. So him and his disciples, they packed up their tents,

  131. and they decided to move north.

  132. And as they're moving north, they have to go through Samaria.

  133. Now, if you know anything about the New Testament,

  134. you know that the Samaritans and Jews might as well have been cats and dogs.

  135. They did not get along.

  136. And see, so this is where we are as Jesus,

  137. with the sun high in the sky, goes through the town of Sychar,

  138. and he stops to get a drink from a well.

  139. He sends his disciples into town, and here comes a Samaritan woman.

  140. And he asked this woman for a drink.

  141. Let's pick the story up in verse 9.

  142. Go ahead and look at your Bibles there if you have them.

  143. It says,

  144. Sir, the woman said,

  145. You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep.

  146. Where can you get this living water?

  147. Are you greater than our father Jacob,

  148. who gave us this well and drunk from it himself,

  149. as did also his sons and his livestock?

  150. You see that this woman's response when she first encounters Jesus is skepticism.

  151. She says,

  152. Wait a minute.

  153. Aren't you a Jew?

  154. Like, we don't get along.

  155. Why are you asking me for water?

  156. I mean, they don't get along so much that the gospel writer John puts in here

  157. an explanation that they are water and oil.

  158. They don't get along.

  159. So that's why it's so strange when she questions him.

  160. It's very abnormal.

  161. It would be like if you're walking down the street in London,

  162. and somebody comes out and hands you a hundred pound note.

  163. It says,

  164. Here you go.

  165. Take this.

  166. That's not,

  167. you're not going to respond and go,

  168. Oh yeah, just a normal Tuesday.

  169. If you do,

  170. let's be friends.

  171. But,

  172. instead,

  173. you're going to go,

  174. Wait.

  175. Why?

  176. Am I being filmed?

  177. Is there something happening here?

  178. And so that's how weird this interaction was for Jesus and this woman at the well.

  179. But yet,

  180. Jesus,

  181. ever the evangelist,

  182. continues pressing on.

  183. And he says,

  184. Actually,

  185. if you knew who was asking you for a drink,

  186. you would ask about this living water.

  187. And again,

  188. the woman,

  189. she responds with skepticism.

  190. She doesn't quite understand.

  191. She says,

  192. Wait a minute.

  193. Who did you say you are again?

  194. This well is deep.

  195. And let me double check.

  196. Yeah,

  197. you don't have a bucket.

  198. What are you doing?

  199. She says,

  200. Are you actually going to be greater than our father Jacob?

  201. who,

  202. who through his persistence and altruism,

  203. dug a well that has watered our cattle and our families for centuries.

  204. Are you better than him?

  205. See,

  206. you can tell this woman is not bought in,

  207. right?

  208. She has a ton of questions.

  209. And if we think about it,

  210. this can be like us when we engage Jesus today,

  211. isn't it?

  212. Maybe you walked in here today because a friend invited you.

  213. Or maybe you came because you just were walking by the street and felt like the Lord was calling you in today.

  214. Whatever it is,

  215. maybe you are here and you are surprised that you have made it this far in the sermon without lightning striking your seat.

  216. You're thinking,

  217. Man,

  218. if these people knew what I did last night,

  219. they would have double locked the doors and not let me in.

  220. Or maybe you're thinking,

  221. Based on some of the things that I have said in my past,

  222. I cannot believe that I am sitting here today.

  223. Just like the woman at the well,

  224. you have questions for Christians.

  225. You've heard the name of Jesus be used not for the betterment of society,

  226. but to its detriment.

  227. Maybe you have friends,

  228. loved ones,

  229. people you care about,

  230. or maybe even yourself that has been hurt by people that call themselves Christians.

  231. Or maybe,

  232. again,

  233. you're the other person that has done their research and you're going,

  234. Hey,

  235. this doesn't add up.

  236. There are millions of books that have been written.

  237. Why is this one,

  238. the Bible,

  239. quote unquote,

  240. inspired?

  241. This Bible,

  242. these stories,

  243. they're not real.

  244. This is just a fairy tale.

  245. God's not real.

  246. This doesn't belong in the world.

  247. And if God really loved me,

  248. why would I be single?

  249. Why would I not have a mom anymore?

  250. Why am I unwell?

  251. but despite all of these questions,

  252. you find yourself sitting at West Kilburn Baptist Church today.

  253. You can't get rid of this nagging feeling that there is something bigger than you out there.

  254. You think life has got to be more than just a chance accident, and you think there's got to be more to life than work on Monday and drinks on Friday.

  255. I think you can identify a lot with the woman at the well here, can't you?

  256. Did you notice what time the woman was at the well?

  257. Verse 6 shows us noon.

  258. Women did not go to the well at noon.

  259. They either went early in the morning or late at night.

  260. So why is this woman going to fetch water at the hottest part of the day?

  261. It's because she's an outcast.

  262. She's not a part of the religious elite.

  263. She's actually quite the opposite, which we'll find out in just a minute.

  264. And I am sure she was asking similar questions to you.

  265. She's thinking, why has my life turned out this way, God?

  266. Why can't I keep a relationship?

  267. Why, God, do you even care that I exist?

  268. And here, in one of her lowest moments of the day, where she is reminded every single day that she is alone, that she is a social outcast,

  269. Jesus meets her.

  270. And he doesn't shy away from her, but instead he presses deeper.

  271. So that's the first response.

  272. You can be skeptical to Jesus.

  273. You're going to see the woman at the well then moves into another response.

  274. And this one is practical.

  275. Let's look at verse 13.

  276. The woman at the well here is much like Nicodemus just one chapter earlier.

  277. She hears what Jesus is saying, and she's thinking very practically.

  278. She's thinking Jesus must mean practically here.

  279. Never be thirsty again.

  280. Somebody's offering you, you don't ever have to drink again.

  281. You don't have to come and draw this water.

  282. You don't have to lug a water jug out here in this hottest part of the day.

  283. Sign me up.

  284. And again, I think this is a common response when we encounter Jesus.

  285. See, the pragmatist hears the gospel and hears somebody say, hey, the gospel has changed my life.

  286. And they say, sign me up.

  287. Who doesn't want a changed life?

  288. But very practically, they come to church.

  289. They sit through the service.

  290. They sing a song.

  291. They hear the sermon.

  292. And they pray a prayer.

  293. And they say, okay, great.

  294. Now my life will be perfect.

  295. But do their problems disappear?

  296. Not at all.

  297. So instead, they come back.

  298. Maybe they say, maybe God just didn't hear me.

  299. I didn't have, you know, the words in the right order.

  300. Maybe God has Vodafone and the coverage was out that day.

  301. Whatever it is, maybe I'll just try again.

  302. And they keep treating Jesus like a genie.

  303. Let me speak directly to you if you are the pragmatist in the room today.

  304. Jesus is not a genie.

  305. You cannot rub the lamp and get your three wishes just because you prayed a prayer and how you want your life to turn out.

  306. Jesus is not a genie.

  307. He is a savior.

  308. And when he comes back, it will not be beside a well.

  309. He will come back on a white horse with fire in his eyes, a robe dipped in blood, a crown rightfully put on his head, and tattooed across his body.

  310. It will say, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

  311. Does this sound like somebody that's coming to grant your wishes?

  312. No.

  313. This is a savior.

  314. So pragmatists in the room today, do not be fooled.

  315. God is not a spirit in the sky waiting to meet every one of your needs.

  316. He is Lord.

  317. If you want to have a relationship with him, you either follow him as Lord or you prepare to meet his wrath.

  318. There is no in between.

  319. See, let's look at Jesus' response here.

  320. He knows that the woman at the well is just not getting it.

  321. So he presses her even deeper and brings up her sexual past.

  322. So we don't know any more specifics about this woman at the well than what is listed right here.

  323. We don't know if she had five husbands because all five of her husbands have died,

  324. and now the guy that she is with now is looking around and going,

  325. I know what happens when people say, I do to you.

  326. I'm good.

  327. Or maybe all of her husbands divorced her.

  328. Maybe she divorced her husbands.

  329. Maybe she was unfaithful.

  330. We don't know.

  331. But either way, we do know that she is dealing with an immense amount of shame.

  332. And Jesus knows that just saying a little prayer or repeating a little mantra to herself is not going to help.

  333. He needs to go deeper.

  334. He has to go to her heart.

  335. So this brings us now to the third response when we encounter Jesus,

  336. which is looking at him and trying to get something beneficial out of the relationship.

  337. See, the beneficial person is very much like the practical person.

  338. They're looking what they can get out of this relationship with Jesus.

  339. They're looking for the benefits of a relationship with Jesus.

  340. But unlike the pragmatist, it's not just practical.

  341. They want to go deeper.

  342. See, the beneficial person wants to be friends with benefits with Jesus.

  343. See, their purpose in following Jesus,

  344. they want to have purpose in following Jesus.

  345. They want a unified mission.

  346. They want the freedom.

  347. They want the worldview.

  348. But they do not want to surrender.

  349. They want the benefits of that relationship with Jesus,

  350. but without the commitment.

  351. Let's look at verse 19.

  352. This is right after Jesus has exposed this woman's sexual past.

  353. She says,

  354. Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.

  355. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain,

  356. but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.

  357. Jesus has just said to her,

  358. Hey, you've had five husbands.

  359. This is not something that she proclaims widely across the town.

  360. And so she's starting to wake up to this conversation.

  361. She's saying,

  362. Hey, this is not just some normal Jew that has come to the well here.

  363. No, this guy, he's really something.

  364. She sees this meeting as an opportunity to use for her theological benefit.

  365. She says,

  366. Hey, Jesus, here you can help me with my worldview.

  367. See, the Jews and Samaritans had beef

  368. because after Solomon died,

  369. the kingdom of Israel split into a northern kingdom and a southern kingdom.

  370. And in the northern kingdom,

  371. there was a kingdom outside of Israel called Assyria

  372. that came in and took over the northern kingdom.

  373. The Assyrians took a lot of people that were beneficial to them out of Israel,

  374. and they put a lot of Assyrians into the northern kingdom of Israel.

  375. And so it was through this that intermarrying started to happen.

  376. And the Jews that were in the south and the southern kingdom of Judah,

  377. they looked at those that were in Samaria in that northern kingdom,

  378. and they looked at them as unclean.

  379. They were unwelcome in their worship because they had intermarried.

  380. And this beef had been going on for centuries.

  381. On top of this beef,

  382. they also established different places of worship.

  383. For those in the southern kingdom,

  384. that would have been Jerusalem, right, at the temple.

  385. For those in the northern kingdom,

  386. that's Mount Gerizim,

  387. which is almost exactly where Jesus is

  388. as he talks to this woman at the well here.

  389. So this woman is looking around,

  390. and she says,

  391. Hey, I know that Jesus is powerful.

  392. Let me use this.

  393. She wants him to give her an answer

  394. to this theological question of where to worship

  395. so that she can have a purpose.

  396. She's thinking to herself,

  397. Hey, if I figure out where we are supposed to worship,

  398. then I can set up a TikTok account about this.

  399. I can start posting around,

  400. and people will say,

  401. Hey, this girl knows what she's talking about.

  402. And I'll start to get some followers,

  403. and I'll gain some money and some momentum,

  404. and I'll be able to make a lot of money

  405. and make a name for myself.

  406. She can even say,

  407. Hey, wait, I'll start out a website of this,

  408. www.rightplacetoworship.com.

  409. And I'll have people come in,

  410. and they'll see me as an authority on this.

  411. I'll be able to write a few books.

  412. I'll get my name out.

  413. I'll go on a nice big tour,

  414. and my life will be set.

  415. What does Jesus answer her with?

  416. Well, he blows her entire framework up.

  417. He says the hour is coming.

  418. In fact, it is here,

  419. where temples,

  420. they're just not going to matter.

  421. What matters is that you worship

  422. the God of the universe

  423. in spirit and in truth.

  424. Now, these words,

  425. in spirit and truth,

  426. there's a lot to unpack with that.

  427. So I'm going to give

  428. a very brief SparkNotes version.

  429. Does anybody still use SparkNotes?

  430. No?

  431. No?

  432. A chat GPT version

  433. of what is happening here.

  434. To worship in spirit

  435. means that worship comes from your heart.

  436. It engages the whole heart.

  437. And to worship in truth

  438. means that your worship

  439. is informed by who God is

  440. and what he is like.

  441. This is not an either or,

  442. but a both and.

  443. John Piper says it like this,

  444. truth without emotion

  445. produces dead orthodoxy

  446. and a church full

  447. or half full

  448. of artificial admirers.

  449. On the other hand,

  450. emotion without truth

  451. produces empty frenzy

  452. and cultivates shallow people

  453. who refuse the discipline

  454. of rigorous thought.

  455. But true worship,

  456. so this is what he's saying,

  457. true worship

  458. comes from people

  459. who are deeply emotional

  460. and who love deep

  461. and sound doctrine.

  462. Both and,

  463. not either or.

  464. I think we can see ourselves

  465. in this woman's story again.

  466. I've seen this

  467. as I've looked around our society.

  468. As we're being confronted,

  469. as this woman's being confronted

  470. with the power of Jesus,

  471. she's not choosing to submit.

  472. Instead,

  473. she's looking to Jesus

  474. from pointers

  475. that will be beneficial

  476. for her life.

  477. As I was saying,

  478. I've looked around our society,

  479. I think I've seen this,

  480. what is called

  481. the quiet revival.

  482. See,

  483. there's been an increase

  484. in people,

  485. in young people specifically,

  486. that have been going to church

  487. in the UK.

  488. This is something

  489. that we need to celebrate.

  490. 16%

  491. according to a recent study

  492. of 18 to 24 year olds

  493. attend church

  494. once a month in the UK.

  495. 16%.

  496. In 2018,

  497. do you know what that number was?

  498. 4%.

  499. Now my masks are not great,

  500. but I believe,

  501. chat GPT told me,

  502. that this is a 300% increase.

  503. That's amazing.

  504. Praise God for that.

  505. But before we start

  506. to ring in the bells of revival,

  507. I think we do need

  508. to think about one thing

  509. and be cautious

  510. about one thing.

  511. I've seen

  512. in some of the media

  513. that I have ingested

  514. and podcasts

  515. and other things

  516. of that nature,

  517. that there are guys,

  518. and I do intentionally say,

  519. guys,

  520. I think this can affect

  521. both genders,

  522. but I say guys intentionally

  523. because I think

  524. a lot of the media

  525. is framed towards them.

  526. I see a lot of guys

  527. that are intentionally

  528. co-opting Christianity

  529. to use to their own

  530. personal benefit.

  531. They strip Christianity

  532. of its spiritual meaning

  533. and just are trying

  534. to figure out

  535. what it will do

  536. to benefit their lives.

  537. They adhere to Christianity

  538. because it brings them

  539. discipline.

  540. It brings purpose

  541. to their lives.

  542. It helps them explain

  543. some feelings

  544. that they might have.

  545. Like, why are they depressed?

  546. Why do they feel hopeless?

  547. And it gives them

  548. a foundation

  549. for dealing

  550. with some of the craziness

  551. of the world, right?

  552. Think about some

  553. of the hot topics

  554. that we have today.

  555. Immigration,

  556. gender identity,

  557. on and on we could go.

  558. Christianity gives you

  559. a worldview,

  560. a foundation

  561. for looking at these things.

  562. But if you have

  563. this worldview

  564. and you do not submit

  565. to God,

  566. it will not work.

  567. It cannot work.

  568. See, Christianity

  569. requires full surrender.

  570. That's what it means

  571. to call Jesus Lord.

  572. These people want to

  573. use Christ

  574. for what will be

  575. beneficial to them,

  576. but they do not

  577. give themselves to him.

  578. Jesus sees it today.

  579. And he saw it

  580. 2,000 years ago

  581. with the woman

  582. at the well.

  583. This worldview

  584. will not lead

  585. to prospering.

  586. Jesus knows it

  587. and so he draws

  588. the woman deeper.

  589. Let's look at

  590. the last response.

  591. Last response

  592. of people that encounter

  593. Jesus is surrender.

  594. We had skeptical.

  595. We went from skeptical

  596. to practical,

  597. practical to beneficial,

  598. and now we go

  599. to surrender.

  600. Let's look at verse 25.

  601. The woman said,

  602. I know that Messiah

  603. called Christ

  604. is coming.

  605. When he comes,

  606. he will explain

  607. everything to us.

  608. This woman has tried

  609. to push Jesus away

  610. with her skepticism.

  611. She's tried to add

  612. Jesus to her life

  613. with very practical

  614. and beneficial ways

  615. and now here

  616. she is at the end

  617. of herself.

  618. She says,

  619. listen,

  620. all right,

  621. fine.

  622. You seem to have

  623. outsmarted me

  624. at every turn

  625. in this conversation.

  626. There's one coming

  627. who will explain

  628. this to this,

  629. trying to end

  630. the conversation.

  631. And in this moment,

  632. when she cannot

  633. see a way forward,

  634. what happens?

  635. In one of the

  636. most clear ways

  637. in the entire

  638. Gospels,

  639. Jesus sees this woman

  640. who has been spit up

  641. and chewed out

  642. by the world,

  643. who is broken down,

  644. who is looked at

  645. as worthless.

  646. If you're thinking

  647. about Nicodemus,

  648. the chapter earlier,

  649. complete opposites,

  650. right?

  651. And he looks

  652. at this woman

  653. who the world

  654. would say

  655. has nothing to offer

  656. in the clearest way

  657. in the entire Gospels.

  658. He looks at her

  659. and he says,

  660. the Savior

  661. you are looking for,

  662. I am he.

  663. So when we encounter

  664. Jesus,

  665. we can have

  666. a few responses,

  667. right?

  668. We can reject him,

  669. we can try and add him

  670. as a bonus to our life,

  671. but there is genuinely

  672. only one right answer.

  673. That is full

  674. and complete surrender

  675. to God.

  676. The woman at the well

  677. got to the end of herself

  678. and when she got

  679. to the end of herself,

  680. she found Jesus

  681. right there,

  682. ready to accept

  683. her surrender.

  684. If you do not have

  685. a relationship

  686. relationship with Jesus,

  687. this is all you have

  688. to do.

  689. If you feel a tug

  690. on your heart

  691. right now,

  692. do not put it off.

  693. This is not the product

  694. of really great teaching.

  695. This is not

  696. just because we put

  697. some emotion

  698. in the air

  699. here at West Kilburn.

  700. That's the Holy Spirit

  701. working on your life.

  702. Do not leave this room

  703. without giving

  704. your life to Christ.

  705. But maybe you're

  706. in the room today

  707. and you have said

  708. yes to that question.

  709. You've answered

  710. that question.

  711. You've said,

  712. I have indeed

  713. completely surrendered.

  714. Of those four responses,

  715. I have submitted

  716. to Christ.

  717. What does this message

  718. mean for me?

  719. Let's move into

  720. our final part

  721. of the sermon today

  722. called Share.

  723. When we encounter Jesus,

  724. we are forced

  725. to compare

  726. our old life

  727. to what Jesus

  728. is offering.

  729. But when we accept

  730. what Jesus is offering,

  731. then we go from

  732. comparing

  733. to sharing.

  734. This is what happens

  735. to the woman.

  736. Look at verse 28.

  737. She says,

  738. Then leaving her water jar,

  739. the woman went back

  740. to the town

  741. and said to the people,

  742. Come, see a man

  743. who told me

  744. everything I've ever done.

  745. Could this be

  746. the Messiah?

  747. This is a complete

  748. shift

  749. in this woman's demeanor.

  750. Remember,

  751. originally,

  752. why did she go

  753. to the well at noon?

  754. Well, because she wanted

  755. absolutely nothing

  756. to do with the town,

  757. right?

  758. And now,

  759. after surrendering

  760. her life to Christ

  761. and leaving her baggage

  762. with Christ,

  763. she goes back

  764. to the very people

  765. she was trying

  766. to avoid.

  767. But,

  768. she can't help

  769. but to say

  770. this good news

  771. to the town.

  772. Let's think about this

  773. for just a minute longer

  774. and then we'll be done.

  775. Why

  776. is there a 180 degree

  777. shift in this

  778. woman's life?

  779. Where moments earlier

  780. she was thought of

  781. as an outcast

  782. and lived her life

  783. as an outcast

  784. and now she is an

  785. on-fire evangelist

  786. for Jesus.

  787. Because she realized

  788. how much

  789. she had been

  790. forgiven.

  791. If you think

  792. that you are

  793. a generally

  794. good person

  795. that hasn't done

  796. that much

  797. that bad

  798. and haven't done

  799. that much wrong,

  800. you know,

  801. you pay your bills

  802. on time,

  803. you don't steal,

  804. you give a portion

  805. of your salary

  806. to those that are

  807. less fortunate

  808. than you.

  809. If you don't think

  810. that you're that bad

  811. when forgiveness

  812. is offered to you,

  813. you don't think

  814. it's that big

  815. of a deal.

  816. But when you

  817. truly understand

  818. how much

  819. we've been

  820. forgiven

  821. as Christians,

  822. then you realize

  823. that this forgiveness

  824. is sweeter than

  825. honey on the tip

  826. of your tongue.

  827. See, the Bible

  828. calls our good

  829. works filthy

  830. rags.

  831. So the good

  832. things that we

  833. think are earning

  834. us a spot in

  835. heaven,

  836. very, very

  837. bluntly,

  838. God calls them

  839. minstrel rags.

  840. Isaiah, look it up.

  841. And it's in this

  842. moment when you

  843. think that your

  844. good works are

  845. helping you that

  846. Jesus comes along

  847. and says, no, no,

  848. no, this is not.

  849. And it's when you

  850. realize this,

  851. that your good

  852. works are just

  853. dirty rags,

  854. that you realize

  855. how much you've

  856. been forgiven.

  857. When you realized

  858. you've been saved

  859. from death to life,

  860. you can't help

  861. but share that,

  862. right?

  863. Verse 14 says

  864. this living water,

  865. Jesus says,

  866. this living water

  867. that I am offering

  868. you will burst

  869. forth from you,

  870. will be like a

  871. spring bursting

  872. forth from you.

  873. Eugene Peterson

  874. is a guy that

  875. translated the Old

  876. and New Testament

  877. into the original

  878. Greek into English.

  879. And he says in

  880. verse 14,

  881. here, I love his

  882. translation.

  883. It says,

  884. the water I will

  885. give will be an

  886. artesian spring

  887. within,

  888. gushing fountains

  889. of endless life.

  890. An artesian spring,

  891. for those of you

  892. that didn't get

  893. your architecture

  894. degree,

  895. is the complete

  896. opposite of a

  897. well.

  898. A well you dip

  899. your bucket into,

  900. you have to draw

  901. water out.

  902. An artesian spring

  903. is bursting forth

  904. with water.

  905. It's basically like

  906. an ancient water

  907. fountain, right?

  908. You don't have to

  909. do any work,

  910. you just lean over

  911. and drink.

  912. This is what

  913. happens when we

  914. grasp the forgiveness

  915. that Jesus has given

  916. us, right?

  917. This truth wells

  918. up inside of us

  919. and bursts forth

  920. to anyone around

  921. us.

  922. And we need

  923. this to happen.

  924. You cannot just

  925. rely on the

  926. quote unquote

  927. professional Christians

  928. like Steve and

  929. myself to spread

  930. the gospel.

  931. Because there are

  932. people in your

  933. life that only

  934. you can reach.

  935. I was recently

  936. talking to a

  937. guy that works

  938. in one of those

  939. big corporate

  940. buildings in

  941. central London.

  942. And as we were

  943. chatting over

  944. lunch, I just

  945. casually brought

  946. up the question.

  947. I said, how

  948. are we going to

  949. reach people

  950. like you?

  951. There are

  952. thousands of

  953. people within a

  954. small radius in

  955. central London that

  956. come there every

  957. day.

  958. How do we

  959. reach them with

  960. the gospel?

  961. And after a

  962. pause, kind of

  963. looked back at

  964. me and he

  965. said, you

  966. don't.

  967. I do.

  968. See, it

  969. wouldn't make

  970. sense for me to

  971. go in there and

  972. try and run a

  973. Christianity

  974. Explored, right?

  975. No offense to

  976. Christianity

  977. Explored.

  978. It's not going

  979. to work.

  980. I don't have a

  981. relationship built

  982. up with these

  983. people.

  984. They don't know

  985. me from Adam.

  986. But this guy,

  987. who spends day

  988. in and day out

  989. with these people,

  990. he goes to get

  991. drinks after work

  992. with them.

  993. He spends his

  994. lunch break with

  995. them.

  996. He has that

  997. 10-minute break

  998. that every one

  999. of us always

  1000. has that we're

  1001. not really doing

  1002. work but we're

  1003. just chatting

  1004. with a co-worker.

  1005. He has that

  1006. moment as well

  1007. to share the

  1008. reason for the

  1009. hope that is

  1010. in him.

  1011. Who has God

  1012. put in your

  1013. life that only

  1014. you can reach?

  1015. Is it a

  1016. co-worker?

  1017. A neighbor?

  1018. A classmate?

  1019. A teammate?

  1020. Who around

  1021. you can have

  1022. their life

  1023. changed because

  1024. they have

  1025. encountered

  1026. Jesus through

  1027. you?

  1028. Let's pray.

  1029. Father in

  1030. heaven, we

  1031. thank you just

  1032. for the

  1033. opportunity.

  1034. Lord, that it

  1035. wasn't us that

  1036. went to you at

  1037. the well and

  1038. said, God,

  1039. here's my good

  1040. works.

  1041. Give me some

  1042. water.

  1043. But it was

  1044. you who saw

  1045. us in the

  1046. midst of our

  1047. filth, in the

  1048. midst of our

  1049. nastiness, and

  1050. what we thought

  1051. was good but

  1052. is actually

  1053. perverse.

  1054. God, you

  1055. reached down

  1056. and said, I

  1057. love you.

  1058. And God, I

  1059. pray that there

  1060. would be people

  1061. in this room

  1062. today that

  1063. would realize

  1064. the immense

  1065. love that you

  1066. have given and

  1067. would give over

  1068. their life to

  1069. you.

  1070. Say, I have

  1071. been Lord of

  1072. my life for

  1073. too long and

  1074. it's not

  1075. going well.

  1076. I need

  1077. someone to

  1078. rule.

  1079. Lord, I

  1080. pray that

  1081. there would be

  1082. people that

  1083. would come to

  1084. the end of

  1085. themselves today.

  1086. Lord, I

  1087. pray for

  1088. West Kilburn

  1089. that we

  1090. would be a

  1091. place that

  1092. when people

  1093. look, they

  1094. see us

  1095. worshiping in

  1096. spirit and

  1097. in truth.

  1098. God, that the

  1099. gospel, the

  1100. good news, that

  1101. you have come and

  1102. saved us from

  1103. sins, we

  1104. couldn't help

  1105. but have it

  1106. overflow out of

  1107. this building.

  1108. The light

  1109. shining in a

  1110. dark place would

  1111. be so bright that

  1112. people would be

  1113. attracted to it.

  1114. God, we

  1115. pray that you

  1116. would use us.

  1117. God, what a

  1118. gift that we

  1119. get to be used

  1120. in your kingdom

  1121. to help bring

  1122. people to

  1123. Christ.

  1124. Lord, it is

  1125. only you that

  1126. can bring people

  1127. but you use

  1128. us.

  1129. God, and we're

  1130. thankful to be
