  1. Let me pray and we'll carry on in that way. Let me pray for us.

  2. Heavenly Father, we pray now as we come to look at your word together and to think about what it means to be a member of a church.

  3. We pray, please, Lord, that you might help us. Help us to think carefully and truly and rightly.

  4. I pray that our time together might be just really good for us as we think about our church here and as we think about what it means to belong together.

  5. So bless us and watch over us and help us, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  6. So over the next three Sunday evenings, we're going to do what I'm hoping is going to be an important little mini series in different offices in church.

  7. So we're going to think about what it means to be a member, what it means to be an elder and what it means to be a deacon.

  8. Now, no, I don't need one as well.

  9. The point of doing this now is that obviously we are a church which has merged two churches together and lots of new people have also joined along the way.

  10. And we're going through lots of important transitions, aren't we?

  11. We submitted our paperwork to the FIEC, the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches, and our membership is pretty much double what it was last year.

  12. And so that means thinking about what these things mean is really important for us so that we're all on the same page.

  13. But also, even though we've come from lots of different church cultures and lots of different church backgrounds, actually, we also need to acknowledge we're not inventing church.

  14. We come to something that has been going on for 2,000 years or so, and we are not inventing it for ourselves.

  15. And as you turn to the New Testament to think about church, you realize that the building blocks of church life are members, those who belong, elders, those who lead and shepherd and guide, and deacons, those who serve in the life of the church.

  16. And so it's really important for us that we get these right as we start, especially as our plan is over this next academic year.

  17. So before the summer at some point, we are going to appoint elders and deacons in the place of the joint leadership team as we move forwards.

  18. So we're going to start with church members.

  19. Now, lots of what I'm going to say to you this evening comes from a book by Jonathan Lehman called Church Membership.

  20. And I've got a copy on my desk, which I intended to wave at you, but you can imagine it's a blue book.

  21. It says church members on the front.

  22. There you go. It's upstairs in my office.

  23. I really recommend the book.

  24. It's very thorough.

  25. It's really well written.

  26. It's easy to read.

  27. And the way that book starts, which is how we're going to start this evening and I think is important, is not so much with the definition of membership, but as a definition of the church.

  28. So to know what it means to be a member of the church, we need to know what is the church itself.

  29. What is the church?

  30. Now, maybe just to try and keep your interest.

  31. What is the church not?

  32. Let me tell you, the church is not a voluntary association.

  33. We are not a knitting club.

  34. Not simply because I hate knitting and can't really do it, but also because actually what's involved in joining a knitting club is very different to what's involved in joining a church.

  35. This is not a voluntary association of people who've just decided to get together.

  36. It's not a basketball club, as we're hearing about this morning, or a residence association.

  37. Rather, in the church, the New Testament, in the New Testament, sorry, the church is something that Jesus is creating through the preaching of the gospel.

  38. So Jesus builds the church as the gospel is proclaimed.

  39. And if you like, the church is a present expression, like an expression in this time and in this place of what is still to come, his future eternal kingdom.

  40. So just back up with me for a moment.

  41. The gospel of the Lord Jesus brings sinners like us into his eternal kingdom.

  42. Right.

  43. We are included in Christ's eternal heavenly kingdom, not by our works, but by his, not by our righteousness, but by his righteousness, his death in place of our death, his resurrection as our resurrection.

  44. And at the moment of conversion is not just that our sins are forgiven and we personally receive salvation.

  45. But also at that moment of conversion, we get included in, we become citizens of Christ's eternal heavenly kingdom.

  46. But we are not immediately transferred to glory.

  47. Instead, we live in the in-between.

  48. We live in the in-between of the now of forgiveness and the not yet of perfection.

  49. None of us are yet perfect.

  50. We live in the in-between.

  51. We are members of the local time bound, geography bound expression of God's eternal kingdom, but not the final glorious kingdom itself.

  52. The illustration that Jonathan Newman uses in his book over and over again is that of an embassy.

  53. So an embassy is a little bit of another country in an in a in a host country, isn't it?

  54. So the job of that embassy is not so much to make citizens of the other country, but it's to help citizens of that other country while they're living in the country in which that embassy exists.

  55. So they are there, if you like, to recognize the citizens, to provide them with representation, to act as an outpost of that other country in a different place.

  56. And that's just leaving, which is a really helpful little illustration of what church is.

  57. Church is an embassy of glory in time and geography today.

  58. It is an outpost of what is yet to come.

  59. It is there not so much to make citizens of heaven, but to recognize who they are as they join citizenship of heaven through faith in Jesus Christ is to provide for them representation, support, encouragement as they live outside of their and away from their eternal home.

  60. So that is the church.

  61. The church is an embassy of glory in a particular time and place.

  62. Another way to think about it is to think about how authority works in the world.

  63. You know, don't you, that there is only one person who has ultimate authority, one person who is able to decide what happens and to insist on it, insist on his own will and punish all disobedience to his will.

  64. And that authority belongs only to Jesus Christ.

  65. He alone is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

  66. He rules from heaven while all enemies are brought under his feet.

  67. And in his world, that King institutes other authorities, authorities which themselves are not ultimate.

  68. He alone has ultimate authority, but which have a delegated authority under him.

  69. Now, let's think about a couple of those.

  70. Let's think about the state or the government, national powers.

  71. Now you're going to need your handout.

  72. Romans chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  73. Here we see that God gives authority to states or to governments.

  74. He says,

  75. Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

  76. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

  77. That doesn't mean that they are all godly, right?

  78. We've been thinking already about corruption.

  79. So they are not godly, but they are established by God.

  80. They are there by his sovereign purpose.

  81. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted.

  82. And those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

  83. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.

  84. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?

  85. Then do what is right, and you will be commended.

  86. For the one in authority is God's servant for your good.

  87. But if you do wrong, be afraid.

  88. For rulers do not bear the sword for no reason.

  89. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

  90. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of the possible punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.

  91. This is why you pay taxes.

  92. The authorities are God's servants who give their full time to governing.

  93. Give to everyone what you owe them.

  94. If you owe taxes, pay taxes.

  95. If revenue, then revenue.

  96. If respect, then respect.

  97. If honor, then honor.

  98. Now, we don't have time to go into all the detail of that.

  99. We'll get to that in our series in Romans eventually.

  100. But this is the power that the nation states have over citizens.

  101. They are given by God delegated authority to rule and reign, and they are given a sword by which to administer justice.

  102. Now, that authority has boundaries, doesn't it?

  103. They are not given ultimate authority over all things.

  104. And sometimes nation states cross over and abuse the boundaries that they're given.

  105. But still, God raises up kings and those in authority and calls us to pray for them and submit to them in the way that they are instituted by God with a sword to rule.

  106. But then also, alongside that, you also have not just the nation state, but you have the church.

  107. Now, the church is not the state.

  108. It's not given the power of the sword.

  109. Instead, it's given the power of the keys.

  110. So, Matthew 16, verses 16 to 19.

    Matthew 16:16–19

  111. Simon Peter answered, you are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

  112. This is Peter's declaration of who Jesus is.

  113. You're the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

  114. Jesus replied, blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.

  115. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, the rock of your confession, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

  116. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

  117. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

  118. Now, Peter is told that the church is going to be built on this confession that Jesus is the Christ.

  119. And Peter has been given the keys of the kingdom of heaven, which gives him the power of binding and loosing.

  120. Now, that sounds a bit mysterious, doesn't it?

  121. So, what exactly is that?

  122. Well, if you turn on a few pages in Matthew, you get to Matthew 18, and you see those keys in use.

  123. We see in verse 15, if your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault just between the two of you.

  124. If they listen to you, you have won them over.

  125. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

  126. If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church.

  127. And if they refuse to listen to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

  128. Truly, I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

  129. It seems, doesn't it, that the church is given the authority to recognize who is and who isn't a part of God's eternal kingdom.

  130. Now, obviously, they don't always get that right.

  131. They sometimes make mistakes and get it wrong.

  132. But Jesus is determined that his future kingdom will be visible in the present day in the church.

  133. Now, again, the church doesn't have ultimate authority over all things.

  134. They don't have the power of the sword.

  135. They don't have the power of the state.

  136. The church can't draft you into an army.

  137. They can't take away your liberty and send you to prison.

  138. But the church does have the authority to decide whether or not to recognize you as a citizen of heaven.

  139. The authority and therefore the responsibility to care for you spiritually and disciple you and discipline you and call you back to faith in Christ.

  140. They hold the keys.

  141. Now, how does it exercise the authority of the keys?

  142. I mean, we know how the sword is exercised, don't we?

  143. We know about the authority of the state taking you to prison or pursuing you for not paying your taxes.

  144. But how about the church?

  145. How does it exercise this responsibility to recognize those who belong to Jesus?

  146. How does it do that?

  147. Well, as you read the New Testament, you see two ways, don't you?

  148. One, baptism, right?

  149. The church is instructed to baptize people who have faith in Jesus Christ.

  150. Now, it's interesting, isn't it?

  151. We talk about baptism as being the public declaration of the candidate.

  152. So we say this is them publicly declaring faith in Jesus.

  153. Now, it is that, right?

  154. But it's a lot more than that.

  155. In the New Testament, it is also the declaration of the church on behalf of God that this individual getting baptized on the basis of their profession of faith is a part of God's eternal kingdom.

  156. So we're saying, as we baptize someone, they're saying, I believe in Jesus.

  157. And we say, because you've declared your faith in Jesus, we baptize you because we recognize that you are part of God's eternal kingdom.

  158. So you might think of the end of Acts 10 when Peter sees that the Gentiles become Christians, that they've received the spirit.

  159. And he says, well, who can stand in the way of these people being baptized?

  160. These people are obviously part of God's kingdom.

  161. We must recognize them as such.

  162. How are we going to recognize them as such?

  163. We're going to baptize them.

  164. That's what we're going to do.

  165. That's the first way.

  166. The other way is the Lord's Supper.

  167. So the church are given a meal to share, and they're to share it with believers, where access is given to members to feed on and delight in the Lord Jesus.

  168. And at the supper, there's to be a distinction between those who belong to Christ and those who don't.

  169. 1 Corinthians 11 is the next cross-reference on your handout.

  170. 1 Corinthians 11.

  171. This is the bit just before the bit that we normally read.

  172. In the following directives, I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.

  173. In the first place, I hear that when you come together as church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent, I believe it.

  174. No doubt, there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval.

  175. So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat.

  176. For when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers.

  177. As a result, one person remains hungry, another gets drunk.

  178. Now, briefly, the background seems to be that in the Corinthian church, when they're meeting on a Sunday, those who are rich, who don't have to go to work, get there early, eat all the food, drink all the wine, and they get drunk.

  179. The poor people who turn up later because they've been working all day, they get there and there's none left.

  180. So there's a distinction in the church between the rich, who are there early and they're drunk, and the poor, who get there late and don't have anything.

  181. That division in the church is a wrong division.

  182. That is not the division that should be visible in the supper.

  183. There should be a division that's visible in the supper.

  184. What does it say?

  185. Verse 19, there should be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval.

  186. It should be that the supper is for those who have faith in Christ, and it is them sharing together in the Lord's Supper, which shows that distinction.

  187. And it's interesting because the distinction in their church is between the rich and the poor, because they're not running the supper properly, it's actually not the Lord's Supper that they're sharing.

  188. You notice that?

  189. So actually, you're just going, it's a private supper.

  190. Really interesting, isn't it?

  191. If you don't do the Lord's Supper properly, it's not really the Lord's Supper.

  192. The benefit of the Lord's Supper comes in doing it in the manner in which it's instituted and given to us by God.

  193. You can't just eat and drink it in any way we fancy or any way we please.

  194. And actually, the thing that makes the supper the supper is that we give it to people who belong to Jesus Christ, because that's who it's for, to show the distinction.

  195. Now, what does all that mean?

  196. It means, doesn't it, that the supper and baptism and membership of the church is visible in those actions.

  197. Baptism and Lord's Supper make visible who belongs to church.

  198. Now, let me skip down in my notes a little bit.

  199. Here's the church then.

  200. We are the embassy of glory.

  201. We're given a job.

  202. We're given the authority of recognizing the genuine believer and then discipling and caring for them.

  203. Baptizing new believers and feeding believers on the word of the cross in the supper.

  204. Any questions or comments at that stage?

  205. And then we'll come and think about what is a member.

  206. Maybe I'll give you a second to talk to the person next to you to say, how is that different or the same as you might have defined church before we talked about it?

  207. What is surprising them?

  208. Maybe what's missing?

  209. Have a talk with the person next to you and then we'll get back together.

  210. Go for it for a couple of seconds.

  211. Okay.

  212. Any comments or questions, feedback that's come from your group?

  213. What was surprising about that?

  214. What's missing perhaps?

  215. Seth?

  216. I have a question.

  217. You said it's important that we do, if we don't do the word of supper the right way, then it's not a single word of supper, right?

  218. Yeah.

  219. All I was talking about, what is the right way?

  220. Yeah.

  221. Okay.

  222. So what is the right way?

  223. So I think, what is the right way to celebrate the supper?

  224. So I think in the context of just the things I was saying, so I'd want to say more than this, but in the context of what I was saying, the right way to do the supper is in a way that publicly recognizes those who belong to Jesus and those who don't.

  225. So I think if you stand up publicly and say, listen, it doesn't matter who you are, it doesn't matter what you believe, you can just join in with this, that it ceases to become the Lord's Supper.

  226. I think when you stand up and say, listen, this is for those who have faith in Jesus Christ, not because we're trying to withhold something that will be beneficial for somebody who's not a Christian, but because the benefits of the supper become through faith in Christ.

  227. And I think when we do that and we show that distinction, that is when the supper becomes the supper.

  228. So it's possible to eat bread and wine and think about Jesus, right?

  229. And that might also be good for you in a way, but it's not the supper as it's defined by the New Testament.

  230. Okay.

  231. Nick was giving the same information to me.

  232. Okay.

  233. And was admonishing at the fact on verse 27 of the one who is in the death.

  234. If what you said is true and we believe it to be true, then I think we have a responsibility to those who are visiting and who will understand that we clarify what on verse 27.

  235. Yeah.

  236. In the context of what I was saying.

  237. Yes.

  238. They drink it unwillingly.

  239. Yes.

  240. So, I mean, we might think it's quite a light thing to celebrate the supper in an inappropriate way, but it seems like it's a really serious thing, right?

  241. So he says, this is why some of you are sick and this is why some of you are dying because of the way that they are sharing the Lord's Supper in such a bad way.

  242. It seems to be as well that the importance of discerning the body.

  243. I think that means discerning the people who belong to Christ.

  244. Yeah.

  245. And so whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of Christ.

  246. And so if any of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of those of

  247. if it's saying what can we buy them?

  248. Yeah, so I think it's giving weight to their words, isn't it?

  249. I think it would be to understand that verse

  250. outside of the rest of New Testament theology

  251. to say that it meant that the church was flawlessly right

  252. on those who were...

  253. But I think it means that it's really serious.

  254. So that actually...

  255. We'll come on to this a little bit in a minute.

  256. And...

  257. But it is...

  258. We're so keen to talk about,

  259. and rightly keen to talk about,

  260. it's about personal, individual faith in Jesus Christ,

  261. which saves them,

  262. that we're really cautious about talking about church membership

  263. in that regard.

  264. Because we live in a place and a time

  265. where we've seen that abused, haven't we?

  266. Where you have to belong to this church in order to be saved.

  267. But the idea that you can be an individual Christian

  268. who doesn't belong and isn't recognized by a local church

  269. is totally alien in the New Testament, isn't it?

  270. And so the idea that there are lots of individuals

  271. who just kind of do church themselves

  272. or don't really belong to a church

  273. is just really alien.

  274. And also, it's really alien,

  275. the idea that you would be able to continue to live

  276. as somebody who wasn't a Christian

  277. and still be involved in the life and membership of a church.

  278. So we're quite used to that as well

  279. in an unhelpful way, aren't we?

  280. Sort of nominalism, right?

  281. So people who belong to church,

  282. but we all sort of think

  283. they're probably not really Christians,

  284. but we just kind of carry on with it.

  285. That's really unknown in the New Testament as well.

  286. So actually, this idea of putting out

  287. and receiving in

  288. is really important in the New Testament.

  289. I don't think that fully answers your question, Hannah.

  290. And the truth is that

  291. if you fully understand what that verse 18 means,

  292. you should be explaining it to the rest of us.

  293. So yeah, there is mystery in that, yeah.

  294. Great.

  295. Should we move on?

  296. Let's talk about what is a church member then.

  297. I mean, just let me say,

  298. I haven't, in that, what is a church,

  299. I haven't said everything that a church is, right?

  300. So there is lots of things that church does

  301. and should do that I haven't included.

  302. But in the context of what is a church member,

  303. being an embassy of glory

  304. and having the authority to recognize believers

  305. are really important in our definition of church.

  306. So what then is a church member?

  307. One of the things, again, that Lehman says in his book,

  308. which is really helpful,

  309. is that given what a church is,

  310. a Christian doesn't so much join a church

  311. as they do submit to a church.

  312. It's not because they surrender their conscience

  313. and in all things to a local church.

  314. It's really unhelpful and wrong, isn't it?

  315. If that's what we're doing.

  316. We don't all have to vote for the same political party.

  317. We don't all have to wear the same clothes.

  318. We don't all have to support Liverpool football team,

  319. you know, or Arsenal or something like that.

  320. We don't have to do that.

  321. Praise the Lord.

  322. Rather, the point is that becoming a member of a local church

  323. is its heart submitting to an authority

  324. that God has instituted in this world.

  325. That's what belonging to a church involves.

  326. And in that sense, like I was saying before,

  327. it's impossible to be a Christian

  328. without being a member of a church.

  329. Not because being a member of a church saves you.

  330. Jesus alone can save you.

  331. But rather, submitting to a church

  332. is really submitting to the authority

  333. that Jesus has instituted in this world

  334. for our good, this side of glory.

  335. Now, of course, that's exactly what you find

  336. going on in the New Testament, isn't it?

  337. Believers in Acts devote themselves

  338. to the apostles' teaching,

  339. to the breaking of bread and to one another.

  340. It's not so much that, you know,

  341. they kind of are bound to do that

  342. by being whipped into doing it,

  343. but rather that's what they want to do.

  344. It's how it works.

  345. It's how it works.

  346. They're described as being together,

  347. of having everything in common.

  348. Belonging to Jesus is membership

  349. in his new community.

  350. And we find the Lord adds to their number.

  351. He grows the community.

  352. So that faith in Jesus brings people

  353. into the community.

  354. And a community then work together, don't they?

  355. In Acts 6, to provide for those who are in need

  356. to prioritize the preaching of the word and prayer.

  357. In Acts 8, when the church is scattered

  358. through persecution,

  359. they regather in different locations,

  360. sharing the gospel,

  361. and becoming churches in different places.

  362. So here's the first thing.

  363. A church member is an individual

  364. who has submitted to the fellowship

  365. of other Christians in a local church.

  366. Secondly, though,

  367. a church member is an individual

  368. who is part of that local church,

  369. exercises authority themselves.

  370. Right.

  371. This is a little bit complicated, maybe.

  372. So let me give you an illustration

  373. that I've robbed from Jonathan Neiman in his book.

  374. He describes a time when, as a US citizen,

  375. he was living in Brussels,

  376. presumably for something to do with politics, right?

  377. Why else would you live in Brussels?

  378. Anyway, his American passport expired.

  379. So he goes into the US embassy in Brussels

  380. and the US embassy recognizes him

  381. as a citizen of the United States

  382. and they renew his passport.

  383. That's what they're there to do.

  384. That's their responsibility.

  385. He says that the difference between that

  386. and a local church

  387. is that when you become a member of the local church,

  388. you also, in one sense,

  389. join this staff of the embassy

  390. that is also involved in recognizing other citizens, right?

  391. You necessarily,

  392. so that as a church member,

  393. you become a sharer in the keys, right?

  394. You also exercise this power of recognition of others.

  395. It seems, doesn't it,

  396. that it will be guided by the elders.

  397. We'll think about that more next week.

  398. But the keys are given to the whole church in Matthew 18

  399. and not just to the leaders.

  400. So the leaders of the church

  401. can't recognize the members on their own.

  402. We can't appoint the leaders on our own.

  403. We can't decide the budget on our own.

  404. We are sharing all those things together.

  405. So membership is submission, yes,

  406. but that submission also brings with it

  407. a share in the authority of the local church.

  408. As an individual Christian,

  409. God calls you to exercise the gift

  410. that he has given you of membership in his kingdom

  411. in the church, in the embassy.

  412. Perhaps it's worth saying here

  413. that this I think is a really important answer

  414. to how the church is intended to protect itself

  415. against the overreach of leaders

  416. in their exercise of authority.

  417. There are such things as bullying pastors or elders.

  418. But really the authority of elders in the church,

  419. and again we'll think about this some more next week,

  420. is the authority of advice or counsel.

  421. They don't hold the right to enforce membership

  422. or excommunication.

  423. The church collectively are given that power.

  424. So if you're in a church where a small group of men

  425. behind closed doors decide who's in and who's out,

  426. that doesn't seem to be a New Testament model

  427. of local church.

  428. Likewise, if you belong to a church

  429. where the individual themselves decides

  430. whether they are in or out

  431. by just writing their name on a list,

  432. or I'm volunteering to join in this or that,

  433. then that too seems to be different

  434. to the model outlined in Matthew 18,

  435. where the individual submits

  436. to the decision of the church

  437. and then themselves belong

  438. to that decision-making body.

  439. Now, of course, that means that joining the church

  440. and submitting and joining

  441. as the staff of the church effectively,

  442. you must first be a believer in Jesus Christ

  443. and a member of his heavenly kingdom.

  444. Church isn't making Christians,

  445. it's recognizing Christians

  446. and church members are those

  447. who have faith in Jesus,

  448. a faith which necessarily comes with a desire

  449. to belong to his people and meet with them.

  450. Repentance and faith becomes an ongoing mark

  451. of the life of a believer, doesn't it?

  452. So as church members,

  453. we are to recognize other believers

  454. and we recognize other believers

  455. by recognizing ongoing repentance,

  456. not perfection.

  457. Yeah.

  458. I've put one quote from Jonathan Newman's book

  459. on your thing and it's here.

  460. It says this,

  461. if I were to write a standards guide

  462. for those conducting membership interviews,

  463. I would go straight to Matthew's Beatitudes.

  464. It might read something like this,

  465. look for the ones who are poor in spirit,

  466. who mourn for their sin,

  467. who aren't entitled,

  468. always insisting on their own way,

  469. but are meek,

  470. who are sick to death of sin

  471. and all its nonsense

  472. and so hunger and thirst for righteousness

  473. like it is water.

  474. When you find people like that,

  475. make sure they know who Jesus is,

  476. make sure Jesus is the one

  477. who fills their impoverished spirit,

  478. who has forgiven their sins,

  479. who receives their life and worship

  480. and whose righteousness

  481. they depend on and pursue.

  482. When you find such people,

  483. tell them to join.

  484. Notice it's not a person's moral perfection

  485. that qualifies him or her

  486. for church membership.

  487. It's just the opposite.

  488. It's his or her recognition

  489. of a lack of moral perfection

  490. coupled with a hunger for it.

  491. It's not the people who never sin,

  492. it's the people who fight sin.

  493. A church's judicial work

  494. is to affirm not the righteousness,

  495. but the unrighteous

  496. who thirst for righteousness,

  497. the righteousness only God

  498. in Christ can give.

  499. Here's one more way to say it.

  500. What makes people acceptable

  501. to a church

  502. is not their own moral purity,

  503. but Christ's.

  504. Not what they have done

  505. to save themselves,

  506. but what God has done

  507. to save them.

  508. That's what it means

  509. to be a member of a local church.

  510. It is somebody

  511. who is repenting

  512. and turning from their sin.

  513. It's not someone

  514. who's morally perfect

  515. and churches are to recognize

  516. those people as members.

  517. Right, let's just put this together.

  518. This is where we're up to.

  519. A church is someone

  520. who submits to a local church

  521. and who then,

  522. as a member of that church,

  523. goes on to exercise authority

  524. with others in the local church.

  525. That means a member

  526. is someone who has faith in Jesus

  527. and is displaying

  528. ongoing repentance

  529. for their sin.

  530. Now, as we finish,

  531. I just want us to think

  532. about what the life

  533. of a church member

  534. will look like.

  535. And I'm going to pull these

  536. directly from Neiman's book

  537. because, one,

  538. I think they're excellent,

  539. and two,

  540. it means if you disagree with them,

  541. you disagree with him

  542. and not me,

  543. and you can pick it up

  544. with him when you see him.

  545. So here are, he says,

  546. eight ways that a church member

  547. submits to the membership

  548. of a local church.

  549. Let me talk about them briefly

  550. and then you can discuss them

  551. with the person sat next to you

  552. and then we'll pray together

  553. as we close.

  554. Firstly, he says that

  555. church members submit publicly.

  556. That is,

  557. membership of the local church

  558. should be formal and official,

  559. not informal and unofficial.

  560. Now, he talks about

  561. what that might look like

  562. in a persecuted church context

  563. where it would be

  564. particularly dangerous

  565. to admit that you are

  566. a member of a local church.

  567. But under normal circumstances

  568. and certainly in our circumstances,

  569. there should be a means

  570. of being publicly recognized

  571. as belonging to church

  572. and therefore being a part

  573. of what's going on.

  574. There should be a way

  575. of you saying,

  576. this is my church.

  577. And that is our membership system.

  578. Our membership system

  579. is not perfect, right?

  580. And we don't administer it perfectly.

  581. We make lots of, you know,

  582. administrative gaffes

  583. all the time

  584. and that kind of thing,

  585. don't we?

  586. And we don't always run

  587. members meetings brilliantly.

  588. That's not what we're saying.

  589. We're not saying our system

  590. is perfect.

  591. But what we're saying is

  592. there needs to be a system,

  593. a system of publicly recognizing

  594. who belongs to the church

  595. and who doesn't.

  596. And that's not to be unfriendly

  597. to outsiders.

  598. In a way,

  599. it's actually to be friendly

  600. to outsiders.

  601. It's to say to people who come,

  602. listen,

  603. we want you to,

  604. you're our guests.

  605. Come and be our guest.

  606. Listen,

  607. you know,

  608. appreciate what's going on.

  609. We're not going to put on you

  610. the burden of pretending

  611. that you believe

  612. something you don't believe.

  613. We're not going to put on you

  614. the burden of running something

  615. or contributing to something

  616. that you don't yet agree with.

  617. We want you to be our guests

  618. because those who belong

  619. to the church

  620. are publicly recognized.

  621. Secondly,

  622. submitting physically,

  623. geographically.

  624. That is that members

  625. of a local church

  626. basically agree

  627. to live in a place

  628. that makes it possible

  629. for them to attend.

  630. So,

  631. membership of a particular

  632. local church

  633. is a commitment

  634. to attend

  635. that particular local church.

  636. And so,

  637. there's not a command

  638. that you should live

  639. within a certain distance

  640. of the place

  641. in which your church gathers.

  642. But still,

  643. the point of a local church

  644. is that it meets

  645. in a place

  646. and a time.

  647. And that

  648. that is one of the things

  649. that we submit to

  650. as a member of the church.

  651. We submit to being there

  652. at the gatherings of the church

  653. which means that

  654. we recognize

  655. that one of the most helpful ways

  656. that we can submit

  657. to a local church

  658. is by submitting

  659. to the place

  660. that that church meets

  661. and by,

  662. as far as we are able,

  663. living in a place

  664. which enables us

  665. to be there regularly

  666. and be part of that community.

  667. Now,

  668. I think that varies

  669. depending on where exactly

  670. you are in the world,

  671. doesn't it?

  672. And how easy it is

  673. to get around.

  674. But,

  675. I do think

  676. there's something

  677. really important

  678. about recognizing

  679. that we belong

  680. to this church

  681. which meets in this place.

  682. We are West Kilburn Baptist Church.

  683. We're not London Baptist Church.

  684. We're not,

  685. you know,

  686. I don't know,

  687. whatever else,

  688. Birmingham Baptist Church

  689. or something.

  690. Actually,

  691. we belong to this particular place.

  692. Socially,

  693. it doesn't mean

  694. that your entire social life

  695. is swallowed up by church

  696. but rather

  697. that in submitting

  698. to a local church

  699. you say,

  700. these are the people

  701. who I commit

  702. to praying for

  703. and getting to know,

  704. sharing my life with.

  705. You know,

  706. one of the things

  707. that is helpfully

  708. drawn out in the book

  709. which I think

  710. is useful for us to know

  711. is that there is a difference

  712. between being a fellow member

  713. and just a Christian friend.

  714. Right?

  715. So,

  716. I have Christian friends

  717. who are not in this church

  718. who I deeply value

  719. and I really appreciate

  720. their friendship

  721. but if you're a member

  722. of this church,

  723. I am responsible for you

  724. and with you

  725. in a way that I am not

  726. with my Christian friends

  727. who are outside

  728. of this church

  729. because we've covenanted

  730. together to belong

  731. to one another

  732. and to recognise

  733. one another

  734. as believers

  735. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  736. and that should affect

  737. how we live.

  738. Right?

  739. So,

  740. we can't be

  741. effective church members

  742. unless we're invested

  743. in getting to know

  744. people in the church.

  745. So,

  746. that's what we submit to.

  747. Affectionately.

  748. Number four.

  749. I guess this really

  750. is just sort of

  751. unpacking that

  752. but it is picking up

  753. on Paul's language

  754. or his body language

  755. about the church.

  756. You know,

  757. where one person hurts

  758. we all hurt.

  759. Yeah?

  760. We rejoice

  761. with those who rejoice.

  762. We mourn

  763. with those who mourn.

  764. Romans 12 verse 10 says

    Romans 12:10

  765. we're to be devoted

  766. to one another in love.

  767. Meaning that

  768. there is a sense

  769. in which church

  770. you submit to the church

  771. capturing your affection

  772. part.

  773. Right?

  774. So,

  775. actually we are

  776. to love deeply

  777. here

  778. and to care

  779. for one another

  780. in that way.

  781. there is a sense

  782. in which

  783. it is right

  784. that our emotions

  785. ride with the church

  786. that when church

  787. is struggling

  788. and difficult

  789. that should grieve us.

  790. When church is going

  791. well we should rejoice

  792. in that.

  793. When people in church

  794. are suffering

  795. we should suffer

  796. with them.

  797. When they're rejoicing

  798. we should rejoice

  799. with them.

  800. Fifthly,

  801. financially

  802. here's the recognition

  803. that it is the members

  804. of the church

  805. who are primarily

  806. responsible

  807. for the funding

  808. of the ministry

  809. of the church

  810. through their own

  811. personal generosity.

  812. Sharing with those

  813. in need.

  814. Allowing those

  815. to preach the gospel

  816. to get a living

  817. from the gospel

  818. and seeing the need

  819. to fund missions

  820. and other churches

  821. in need.

  822. You know,

  823. we hope

  824. we give

  825. to the ministry

  826. and life

  827. of the local church.

  828. We might choose

  829. to give beyond that

  830. as well.

  831. We might choose

  832. to give other money

  833. elsewhere

  834. but we are

  835. primarily responsible

  836. for funding

  837. the ministry

  838. of the church

  839. here,

  840. aren't we?

  841. And the needs

  842. here.

  843. And if we are

  844. not able to do

  845. that we need

  846. to either trim

  847. what we're doing

  848. or we need

  849. to ask one another

  850. whether we're

  851. really being

  852. as sacrificial

  853. as we should be.

  854. That applies

  855. not only

  856. to church members

  857. it applies

  858. to church leaders

  859. it applies to me

  860. it applies to

  861. everybody.

  862. And we're

  863. responsible

  864. for the finances

  865. here.

  866. It's the family

  867. finances.

  868. Vocationally

  869. now for some

  870. this will mean

  871. perhaps stepping

  872. away from a career

  873. to some kind

  874. of paid ministry.

  875. For others

  876. it might mean

  877. holding back

  878. in a career

  879. to give time

  880. to the ministry

  881. of the church.

  882. For all of us

  883. it will mean

  884. that recognizing

  885. that what God

  886. is building

  887. in the local church

  888. is the most

  889. significant thing

  890. that is being

  891. put together

  892. in this world.

  893. It's more important

  894. than whatever it is

  895. that we're building

  896. in our jobs.

  897. Now that doesn't

  898. mean that God

  899. is not honored

  900. by the way

  901. that you go

  902. about your work

  903. and that you

  904. can't glorify

  905. him in your work.

  906. That's really

  907. important.

  908. You do do that.

  909. We're going

  910. to be thinking

  911. about that

  912. later this term.

  913. But actually

  914. it recognizes

  915. that what God

  916. is doing

  917. in the local

  918. church is really

  919. the significant

  920. thing.

  921. This is the

  922. outpost

  923. of future glory.

  924. Ethically

  925. again not that

  926. the local church

  927. has authority

  928. over your conscience

  929. but rather

  930. that your brothers

  931. and sisters

  932. in the church

  933. have the right

  934. to call you

  935. out on your

  936. behavior

  937. and to encourage

  938. you to walk

  939. closely with the

  940. Lord.

  941. When you join

  942. in church

  943. membership

  944. you are

  945. submitting

  946. to say

  947. listen

  948. I commit

  949. myself

  950. to living

  951. for Jesus

  952. and if you

  953. see that I

  954. am not doing

  955. that I

  956. invite you

  957. to say to me

  958. Steve you're

  959. not living for

  960. the Lord Jesus

  961. in that area

  962. of your life.

  963. What you did

  964. there was

  965. not right.

  966. And I mean

  967. that's good

  968. for us.

  969. I know it feels

  970. difficult but it

  971. is good for us

  972. isn't it?

  973. At the heart

  974. of church

  975. sin is not

  976. dealt with

  977. by pretending

  978. that it

  979. doesn't exist

  980. but by

  981. repentance and

  982. faith isn't

  983. it?

  984. So when we

  985. submit like

  986. that to church

  987. and someone

  988. points out

  989. and we say

  990. oh yeah

  991. you're right

  992. I'm sorry

  993. I'm sorry

  994. that I did

  995. that please

  996. forgive me

  997. and then that

  998. person doesn't

  999. say oh

  1000. of course

  1001. I'm not

  1002. going to

  1003. forgive you

  1004. they go

  1005. no of course

  1006. I will

  1007. forgive you

  1008. we have

  1009. the means

  1010. of forgiveness

  1011. in the

  1012. center of

  1013. our church

  1014. life in

  1015. the person

  1016. and work

  1017. of the

  1018. Lord Jesus

  1019. spiritually

  1020. that is that

  1021. the local

  1022. church is to

  1023. be the

  1024. place where

  1025. your spiritual

  1026. gifts are to

  1027. be exercised

  1028. for the good

  1029. of others

  1030. doesn't mean

  1031. that every

  1032. spiritual gift

  1033. in the life

  1034. of church

  1035. is on

  1036. display in

  1037. a public

  1038. gathering of

  1039. the local

  1040. church

  1041. it's really

  1042. important

  1043. isn't it?

  1044. We don't

  1045. have an

  1046. administration

  1047. slot in

  1048. our service

  1049. so that those

  1050. with gifts

  1051. of administration

  1052. can come and

  1053. display them

  1054. in front of

  1055. everybody on

  1056. a Sunday

  1057. morning

  1058. no because

  1059. the gifts

  1060. that we use

  1061. on a Sunday

  1062. morning are

  1063. those that

  1064. are good

  1065. for building

  1066. us up

  1067. but actually

  1068. we all have

  1069. different gifts

  1070. don't we

  1071. which we are

  1072. to exercise

  1073. in the life

  1074. of our church

  1075. for the good

  1076. of the mission

  1077. of the church

  1078. for the building

  1079. of one another

  1080. up in all

  1081. sorts of

  1082. different ways

  1083. the church

  1084. is also the

  1085. place where

  1086. you will be

  1087. taught the

  1088. Bible by

  1089. someone who

  1090. knows you

  1091. and who God

  1092. has gifted

  1093. to preach

  1094. it

  1095. again

  1096. it seems

  1097. to be

  1098. the Lord

  1099. in his

  1100. wisdom

  1101. suggests that

  1102. the most

  1103. spiritually

  1104. helpful thing

  1105. for you

  1106. is not to

  1107. be taught

  1108. by the best

  1109. preacher in

  1110. the world

  1111. which is

  1112. definitely

  1113. not me

  1114. but you can

  1115. find them on

  1116. the internet

  1117. whoever they

  1118. are

  1119. but to be

  1120. taught by

  1121. someone who

  1122. knows you

  1123. and who

  1124. loves you

  1125. and who

  1126. will be

  1127. held

  1128. accountable

  1129. by you

  1130. and also

  1131. by the Lord

  1132. for what they

  1133. say

  1134. that's the

  1135. most spiritually

  1136. helpful thing

  1137. for you

  1138. even if they

  1139. stumble over

  1140. their words

  1141. and even if

  1142. they don't

  1143. you know

  1144. they don't

  1145. have a

  1146. stick

  1147. illustrations

  1148. of other

  1149. people

  1150. because actually

  1151. that's the

  1152. way that the

  1153. Lord has

  1154. designed the

  1155. Christian life

  1156. church is to

  1157. be the place

  1158. where your

  1159. spiritual

  1160. well-being

  1161. will be

  1162. taken

  1163. seriously

  1164. and cared

  1165. for by

  1166. others

  1167. so you

  1168. go

  1169. what were

  1170. they

  1171. those eight

  1172. things

  1173. publicly

  1174. physically

  1175. geographically

  1176. socially

  1177. affectionately

  1178. financially

  1179. vocationally

  1180. ethically

  1181. spiritually

  1182. I intended

  1183. to put a

  1184. question on

  1185. your handout

  1186. at the end

  1187. of that

  1188. but I did

  1189. not

  1190. did I

  1191. I wonder

  1192. whether you

  1193. could talk

  1194. with the

  1195. person next

  1196. to you

  1197. about what

  1198. you think

  1199. about those

  1200. any of those

  1201. that are

  1202. surprising

  1203. or maybe

  1204. something that

  1205. you think

  1206. is missing

  1207. and then

  1208. we'll take

  1209. your questions

  1210. and then

  1211. we'll close

  1212. go for it

  1213. okay

  1214. sorry to

  1215. interrupt your

  1216. conversations

  1217. anyone got

  1218. any comments

  1219. or questions

  1220. Nick has a

  1221. question

  1222. yes

  1223. but the

  1224. difficulty

  1225. there is

  1226. how do

  1227. you draw

  1228. the line

  1229. or how

  1230. do you

  1231. what

  1232. guidelines

  1233. can we

  1234. follow

  1235. to ensure

  1236. that we

  1237. it's the

  1238. right thing

  1239. that we're

  1240. not necessarily

  1241. invading

  1242. privacy as

  1243. well

  1244. yeah

  1245. so I guess

  1246. what sort

  1247. of guidelines

  1248. can we

  1249. use

  1250. yes

  1251. how can

  1252. we not

  1253. be intrusive

  1254. in our

  1255. encouragement

  1256. to people

  1257. not to

  1258. sin

  1259. or to

  1260. calling

  1261. people out

  1262. and sin

  1263. so there's

  1264. lots of

  1265. things you

  1266. could say

  1267. on there

  1268. Galatians 6

    Galatians 6:1

  1269. verses 1

  1270. and 2

  1271. are really

  1272. helpful aren't

  1273. they

  1274. brothers and

  1275. sisters if

  1276. someone is

  1277. caught in

  1278. sin

  1279. you who

  1280. live by

  1281. the spirit

  1282. should

  1283. restore that

  1284. person

  1285. gently

  1286. but watch

  1287. yourselves

  1288. or you

  1289. also may

  1290. be tempted

  1291. carry each

  1292. other's

  1293. burdens

  1294. and in

  1295. this way

  1296. you will

  1297. fulfill the

  1298. law of

  1299. Christ

  1300. it seems

  1301. isn't it

  1302. it's not

  1303. it's not

  1304. the leaders

  1305. who do it

  1306. necessarily

  1307. it's

  1308. believers

  1309. don't believe

  1310. so I think

  1311. lots of

  1312. church

  1313. discipline

  1314. just happens

  1315. in conversation

  1316. between

  1317. church

  1318. members

  1319. doesn't

  1320. it

  1321. as we

  1322. encourage

  1323. each

  1324. other

  1325. we're

  1326. to do

  1327. it

  1328. with

  1329. gentleness

  1330. and with

  1331. a

  1332. recognition

  1333. that

  1334. actually

  1335. the

  1336. temptations

  1337. that we

  1338. see other

  1339. people

  1340. kind of

  1341. giving

  1342. into

  1343. are not

  1344. temptations

  1345. that we

  1346. ourselves

  1347. wouldn't

  1348. suffer

  1349. with

  1350. yeah

  1351. there's

  1352. lots more

  1353. that could

  1354. be said

  1355. I think

  1356. that's a

  1357. really

  1358. really

  1359. important

  1360. verse

  1361. in that

  1362. yeah

  1363. anybody

  1364. else

  1365. yeah

  1366. simming

  1367. go on

  1368. just trying

  1369. to think

  1370. through

  1371. evangelism

  1372. because

  1373. in a

  1374. sense

  1375. even

  1376. if you

  1377. plant

  1378. the

  1379. church

  1380. in a

  1381. really

  1382. in order

  1383. to reach

  1384. a

  1385. community

  1386. you're

  1387. gatherings

  1388. together

  1389. the

  1390. main

  1391. part of

  1392. them

  1393. is

  1394. the

  1395. encouragement

  1396. of

  1397. brothers and

  1398. sisters

  1399. together

  1400. but

  1401. there's a

  1402. sense in

  1403. which as a

  1404. church family

  1405. you're there

  1406. to go out

  1407. yes

  1408. yeah

  1409. maybe it's

  1410. just it

  1411. doesn't

  1412. fit into

  1413. church

  1414. as a

  1415. gathering

  1416. or

  1417. how does

  1418. it

  1419. yeah

  1420. so how

  1421. does evangelism

  1422. fit with

  1423. those eight

  1424. points

  1425. because evangelism

  1426. wasn't one of

  1427. them that I

  1428. gave

  1429. well you

  1430. probably ought

  1431. to pick that

  1432. up with

  1433. Jonathan

  1434. but one of the

  1435. things I think

  1436. is that we

  1437. underestimate

  1438. the evangelistic

  1439. effectiveness of a

  1440. healthy local

  1441. church

  1442. it seems

  1443. that 1

  1444. corinthians 14

  1445. talks about

  1446. unbelievers being

  1447. present at the

  1448. gatherings of the

  1449. church and

  1450. recognizing from the

  1451. manner in which

  1452. those gatherings

  1453. are run

  1454. that God is

  1455. amongst them

  1456. and at work in

  1457. them

  1458. and ironically

  1459. that is the

  1460. recognition that

  1461. they're on the

  1462. outside of it

  1463. even though they're

  1464. present in it

  1465. and so

  1466. that's I think

  1467. the mistake of

  1468. the seeker service

  1469. isn't it

  1470. which basically

  1471. says

  1472. this is

  1473. our gatherings

  1474. are really for

  1475. people who don't

  1476. know Christ

  1477. actually that is

  1478. not as that's not

  1479. good for the

  1480. believers

  1481. actually not all

  1482. that good for

  1483. people who don't

  1484. know Christ

  1485. either

  1486. our gatherings

  1487. are for the

  1488. building up of

  1489. believers

  1490. and are to be

  1491. friendly and

  1492. welcoming to

  1493. those outside

  1494. that they might

  1495. watch and

  1496. recognize that

  1497. they're not a

  1498. part of what's

  1499. going on outside

  1500. of faith in

  1501. Christ

  1502. and in that

  1503. way

  1504. they're supporting

  1505. the evangelistic

  1506. ministry of every

  1507. individual in the

  1508. church

  1509. so you know

  1510. come to church

  1511. come and have

  1512. a look

  1513. come and have

  1514. a look

  1515. what we do

  1516. you know

  1517. does that

  1518. help is that

  1519. what you were

  1520. saying

  1521. yeah

  1522. yeah

  1523. yes

  1524. yeah

  1525. yeah

  1526. thanks

  1527. sorry

  1528. go on

  1529. simile

  1530. you were

  1531. going to

  1532. say as

  1533. well

  1534. pretty sure

  1535. you took

  1536. a breath

  1537. yeah

  1538. yeah

  1539. yeah

  1540. yeah

  1541. yeah

  1542. yeah

  1543. yeah

  1544. yeah

  1545. and in a

  1546. way

  1547. it's not

  1548. just

  1549. the church

  1550. events that

  1551. are designed

  1552. with the

  1553. unbeliever in

  1554. mind

  1555. it is actually

  1556. church itself

  1557. which is

  1558. evangelistic

  1559. so you know

  1560. you're trying to

  1561. reach out to a

  1562. place that has

  1563. no gospel

  1564. witness

  1565. you want to

  1566. plant a local

  1567. church there

  1568. as a kind of

  1569. beacon of light

  1570. and you want to

  1571. encourage them to

  1572. be healthy

  1573. to care for one

  1574. other spiritually

  1575. to grow as

  1576. Christians

  1577. because that

  1578. will be

  1579. evangelistic

  1580. yeah

  1581. yeah

  1582. yeah

  1583. yeah

  1584. yeah

  1585. yeah

  1586. vocationally

  1587. it's really

  1588. interesting that

  1589. isn't it

  1590. so if you

  1591. so you might

  1592. have a job

  1593. that involves

  1594. shift work

  1595. like Natasha

  1596. was there

  1597. you know

  1598. so that you

  1599. can't attend

  1600. church as

  1601. regularly as

  1602. you'd like to

  1603. but there

  1604. might be

  1605. some careers

  1606. that for some

  1607. Christians

  1608. just might

  1609. not be

  1610. appropriate

  1611. not because

  1612. they're

  1613. unethical

  1614. but just

  1615. because they

  1616. take them

  1617. away from

  1618. the life of

  1619. the local

  1620. church in

  1621. such a way

  1622. that they

  1623. could grow

  1624. as Christians

  1625. you know

  1626. even if that

  1627. job put you

  1628. amongst non-Christians

  1629. all day that

  1630. you had technically

  1631. an opportunity

  1632. to witness to

  1633. if you were

  1634. so taken away

  1635. from a healthy

  1636. local church

  1637. that you weren't

  1638. able to live

  1639. as a Christian

  1640. what's the

  1641. evangelistic benefit

  1642. in that

  1643. yeah

  1644. yeah so I think

  1645. you could tease

  1646. out evangelism in

  1647. all of them

  1648. couldn't you

  1649. probably

  1650. yeah

  1651. any other

  1652. final comments

  1653. or questions

  1654. great

  1655. well I'll take

  1656. it that you're

  1657. all super excited

  1658. to belong

  1659. to a local

  1660. church

  1661. it's a great

  1662. thing isn't

  1663. it it's a

  1664. really good

  1665. thing to

  1666. belong to

  1667. church

  1668. so let me

  1669. pray

  1670. and we'll

  1671. close

  1672. and let me

  1673. pray for us

  1674. heavenly father

  1675. thank you

  1676. that we get

  1677. to belong

  1678. to a local

  1679. church

  1680. like West

  1681. Kilburn Baptist

  1682. Church

  1683. we thank

  1684. you

  1685. that for

  1686. the sake

  1687. of our

  1688. growth

  1689. in Christ

  1690. and for

  1691. the sake

  1692. of our

  1693. assurance

  1694. and for

  1695. the sake

  1696. of our

  1697. health

  1698. as Christians

  1699. you've put

  1700. us around

  1701. other people

  1702. who have

  1703. committed

  1704. themselves

  1705. to caring

  1706. for us

  1707. and to

  1708. watching over

  1709. us

  1710. we want

  1711. to pray

  1712. please

  1713. that

  1714. belonging

  1715. to our

  1716. church

  1717. would be

  1718. good for

  1719. us

  1720. and that

  1721. we'd

  1722. exercise

  1723. these

  1724. responsibilities

  1725. that you've

  1726. given to

  1727. us

  1728. with due

  1729. care and

  1730. attention

  1731. and that

  1732. we wouldn't

  1733. be sloppy

  1734. about it

  1735. not because

  1736. we reckon

  1737. that we can

  1738. always get

  1739. it right

  1740. but because

  1741. these things

  1742. are important

  1743. because they're

  1744. important to

  1745. you

  1746. so Lord

  1747. we thank you

  1748. that you love

  1749. us

  1750. thank you for

  1751. all you've

  1752. done for

  1753. us

  1754. bless us

  1755. as we go

  1756. our separate

  1757. ways

  1758. in Jesus name
