  1. Our reading is from Matthew chapter 2 verse 1 to 12. That's on page 9666.

    Matthew 2:1–12

  2. ! After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the East came to Jerusalem and asked,

  3. where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.

  4. When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed and all Jerusalem with him.

  5. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.

  6. In Bethlehem in Judea, they replied, for this is what the prophet has written.

  7. But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, are by no means least among the rulers of Judea.

  8. For out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.

  9. When Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared, he sent them to Bethlehem and said,

  10. go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me so that I too may go and worship him.

  11. After they had heard the king, they went on their way.

  12. And the star they had seen when it rose, went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.

  13. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

  14. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him.

  15. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

  16. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

  17. Amen.

  18. Good morning, everyone.

  19. For those of you that don't know me, I'm Ray.

  20. I have the honour of sharing the Lord's word with you today.

  21. Will you join me in a prayer as we look at the word together?

  22. Father, thank you for the wonderful, true story of Christ coming to this world.

  23. To be born as a baby, to live as a man and to die as a saviour for us.

  24. Open our eyes this morning, open our hearts, Lord, that we may hear your word and we may respond in the right way.

  25. In Jesus' name, amen.

  26. Well, last week we looked, if you were here, we looked at Matthew chapter one, verses 18 to 22.

  27. And we saw that central to the passage was that the birth of Jesus.

  28. Jesus was a fulfilment of what God had promised through the prophets years before.

  29. We again see that this week in chapter two, the verses one to 11 that Lucia read to us.

  30. But the surprises in this week's passages are the responses of those who witnessed his birth.

  31. So we'll work through this together.

  32. OK, right now I've got the hand of the clicker, hopefully, hopefully be OK.

  33. So the story as you as it was read to us by Lucia, if we follow it, it's something like a dramatic film script.

  34. Now, if you've been watching the TV over Christmas, it's kind of one of those unnecessary, unfortunate, necessary things, isn't it?

  35. You see the films Home Alone 2 was on yesterday.

  36. Home Alone was on yesterday.

  37. And whether you like it or not, you've got to admit it is pure fiction.

  38. All right. It's beyond the realms of possibility.

  39. This is like a dramatic film script, but it is truth.

  40. It is gospel truth.

  41. That's a wonderful thing we're looking at today.

  42. A child is born to an obscure poor family in a small rural village in Judea in humble circumstances.

  43. But this child produced extreme reactions from the influential and from the wealthy.

  44. A king in nearby Jerusalem wanted to kill him.

  45. And a strange nobility from another country fell down and worshipped him.

  46. If we really understand this morning who Jesus is, it should produce a profound reaction in us as well.

  47. It doesn't matter who we are, what age, what background or education, ethnicity, religion or any other label or way you like to see yourself.

  48. Whoever we are, when we come face to face with the claims of Jesus, there must be, there will be a response.

  49. Nobody can hear the gospel story and stay neutral.

  50. Verse one sets out the scene for us and we're introduced to the three main characters of the story.

  51. We have here, well, let's read the verse.

  52. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the East came to Jerusalem.

  53. So here we have the three main characters, Jesus, Herod and the Magi.

  54. The passage presents them each with a defining characteristic.

  55. I think this is true and not something I've made up, but this is how I see it, okay?

  56. The promised child, a troubled king and wise visitors.

  57. So we're going to look at those in turn now quickly.

  58. The promised child.

  59. Who was this child?

  60. We saw in last week in chapter one, verse 21, that his name is Jesus.

  61. But in the passage we're looking at today, we're told his name in terms of what he would do more of a title.

  62. The wise men called him King of the Jews.

  63. Verse two, Herod called him the Messiah.

  64. Strangely in verse four, the chief priests and scribes quote the prophet Micah,

  65. who called him a ruler who would be a shepherd.

  66. In verse six.

  67. So Jesus is King, Messiah and ruler promised years before by the prophet sent by God, the father for his people.

  68. Just want to look very, very briefly with you now at what these titles mean.

  69. Very briefly.

  70. The promised king.

  71. He was God's king to lead his people.

  72. To govern them with justice, but also mercy.

  73. The promised Messiah.

  74. He was the Christ, the one anointed by God, anointed for a purpose.

  75. Again, chapter one, verse 21, to save his people from their sins.

  76. He was also the promised ruler.

  77. He was a ruler who strangely we hear from this passage was to be a shepherd.

  78. Putting all this together.

  79. He was no ordinary child, but God's chosen king sent to rule his people.

  80. Promise to God's people for centuries before in the scriptures.

  81. So why a shepherd.

  82. Why a shepherd.

  83. Why a shepherd.

  84. Prophecy that the religious leaders are paraphrasing.

  85. is found in Micah chapter 5 verses 2 to 5 which describes not only where he would be born

    Micah 5:2–5

  86. but what he would do and this is where the shepherd comes in in what he would do how he would do it

  87. not sure if you can see that on the screen but it's the words of Micah chapter 5 verses 2 to 5

    Micah 5:2–5

  88. and I'll read those to you but you Bethlehem Ephrathah though you are small among the

  89. clans of Judah out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel whose origins are

  90. from of old from ancient times verse 3 then tells us that there's a woman who will bear a son

  91. and the Israelites that were away from the other body of Israelites would come together

  92. verse 4 says he will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord in the majesty of the

  93. name of the Lord his God and they will live securely for then his greatness will reach to the ends of

  94. the earth so where does this ruler shepherd come from we're told to be born in Bethlehem

  95. but Micah tells us more in verse 2 he says out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over

  96. Israel now this is it whose origins are from old from ancient times so we're told that this baby was from

  97. ancient times in other words he existed long before his birth John chapter 1 tells us that he was in the

    John 1 chapter mention

  98. beginning what with God you may recall that verse and with God he co-created the universe

  99. so Bethlehem was not the start of Jesus's life

  100. so what would he do he will rule his over his people and how would he do it he would do it as a

  101. shepherd verse 4 Micah says he will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord

  102. so his mission was from the Lord and he would stand in the strength of the Lord displaying the majesty

  103. of his father and his rule his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth this was a promise

  104. made to God's people of Judah about 700 years before Jesus was born which we continue to see unfold now

  105. today 2025 as people from every nation across this globe now accept the rule of Jesus the king

  106. with that mission and that power God promised God's promised ruler would stand and shepherd his flock

  107. so the important question for us this morning is how should we respond to that shepherd ruler

  108. we're going to see how the two groups Herod and the wise men responded first of all Herod

  109. now he's a troubled king who was he historians call him Herod the Great he was installed by the Roman

  110. senate as king of Judea or king of the Jews he was known as a ruthless man who even had his wife

  111. and his three sons executed he thought his wife was trying to poison him so he got rid of her before

  112. he thought she could get rid of him

  113. at this point I've got to say this is the guy we are not to follow all right this is not the example

  114. we are supposed to follow he was also a Jew and he would have been familiar with some of the prophecies

  115. and and the expectation of the coming Messiah

  116. so we're now going to take up the story again in verse 2 if you're reading in your bibles it's page 966

  117. or hopefully I thought it was going to be here on the screen so if you've not got your bibles you'll

  118. just have to listen along here

  119. there it is sorry where is the one who has been born king of the Jews

  120. we saw his star when it came when it rose and have come to worship him

  121. when king Herod heard this he was disturbed and all Jerusalem with him

  122. when he called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law

  123. he asked them where the Messiah was to be born

  124. in Bethlehem in Judea they replied

  125. but this is what the prophet has written

  126. but you Bethlehem

  127. in the land of Judah are by no means least among the rulers of Judah

  128. for out of you will come a ruler

  129. who will shepherd my people Israel

  130. then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them

  131. the exact time the star had appeared

  132. he sent them to Bethlehem and said

  133. go and search carefully for the child

  134. as soon as you find him

  135. report to me

  136. so that I too may go and worship him

  137. why was Herod disturbed

  138. and that word disturbed can mean

  139. agitated or troubled

  140. the reason is because in verse 2

  141. the visitors

  142. the Magi

  143. were looking for another king of the Jews

  144. not that one day this king would rise to power and perhaps become a king

  145. but this king was born a king

  146. Herod was installed as a king by the Roman Senate

  147. Jesus was born as king by divine order

  148. a completely different order of king

  149. this is why he was worried

  150. so he calls the wise men secretly

  151. he plays them along and he pretends he wants to worship the child as well

  152. later chapter 2 verse 16

  153. we see his real ambition

  154. he hatches a plan

  155. to get rid of the child

  156. but in so doing

  157. he would wipe out

  158. all the boys in Bethlehem

  159. aged 2 and under

  160. Herod knew the scriptures

  161. he knew who the child was

  162. but he determined to get rid of him

  163. he would not tolerate

  164. what he saw as a rival

  165. to his throne

  166. but in so doing

  167. he rejected God's king

  168. and God's rule

  169. let me take you back to Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  170. Herod's

  171. reaction

  172. though very extreme

  173. has been the story of mankind

  174. since Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  175. Adam thought he knew best

  176. he disobeyed the one God had given

  177. the one rule God had given him

  178. and we still do that today

  179. look frankly we may not be as bold as Herod

  180. but we often still want to be king

  181. or queen

  182. we still want to make the rules

  183. we do not want to live subject to God

  184. or under his rule

  185. I wonder whether you can relate to some of this

  186. we don't want to kill the king

  187. but we may behave as if he wasn't there

  188. and therefore

  189. if he's not there

  190. we needn't be subject to him

  191. we may be troubled or agitated

  192. when we hear of the exclusivity

  193. of the rule of King Jesus

  194. that there can't be any rivals to him

  195. such as friends

  196. such as

  197. even family

  198. there can't be rivals in

  199. the things we have as a priority

  200. maybe work or studies

  201. everything must be

  202. subject to him

  203. if Jesus is king

  204. he's king over all

  205. but those of us

  206. that have come under that rule of Jesus

  207. those of us

  208. who have submitted to him

  209. we do know him to be a shepherd

  210. one who cares for his sheep

  211. he leads his sheep

  212. he feeds his sheep

  213. he protects

  214. and provides for them

  215. so that's Herod

  216. he wanted to get rid of Jesus

  217. the last group in the story

  218. who also knew who Jesus was

  219. but their response was completely opposite

  220. the Magi

  221. I call them the wise visitors

  222. and I read to you those

  223. I have that

  224. yeah

  225. I read to you that text

  226. if you may be able to follow it on the screen

  227. or if not in your Bible

  228. starting at verse 9

  229. after they had heard the king

  230. they went on their way

  231. and the star they had seen

  232. when it rose

  233. went ahead of them

  234. until it stopped over the place

  235. where the child was

  236. when they saw the star

  237. they were overjoyed

  238. on coming to the house

  239. they saw the child

  240. with his mother Mary

  241. and they bowed down

  242. and worshipped him

  243. then they opened their treasures

  244. and presented him with gifts of gold

  245. frankincense

  246. and myrrh

  247. and having been warned in a dream

  248. not to go back to Herod

  249. they returned to their country

  250. by another route

  251. so who were these visitors

  252. they're called Magi

  253. in the text here

  254. their precise meaning of that word

  255. is a little nuanced

  256. it can mean several things

  257. but verse 2

  258. shows us that

  259. they were probably people

  260. who studied the stars

  261. some kind of astronomy

  262. and they also studied

  263. the ancient scriptures

  264. including of course

  265. the Old Testament prophecies

  266. we pick that up from verse 2

  267. they followed the star

  268. and sought the child

  269. born king of the Jews

  270. we're told they were from the east

  271. we're not told exactly

  272. where in the east

  273. and that doesn't really matter

  274. but the point is

  275. they were strangers

  276. they weren't Jews

  277. they were foreigners

  278. from another country

  279. they were rich

  280. highly educated

  281. and respected

  282. by those in their region

  283. we sometimes think of them

  284. as being three guys

  285. with crowns on camels

  286. in fact I might have got

  287. a picture of that somewhere

  288. I've got a picture of that

  289. no that was the one before

  290. there they are

  291. three guys on camels

  292. going across the desert

  293. but it wasn't quite like that

  294. these were rich guys

  295. who were very influential

  296. they would have had

  297. servants with them

  298. they would have had

  299. camels behind them

  300. carrying

  301. the various things

  302. they needed for the journey

  303. it was a big retinue

  304. and they would have made

  305. quite a big impact

  306. as they came to Jerusalem

  307. and although

  308. not part of God's people

  309. they recognised Jesus

  310. as one greater

  311. than themselves

  312. their response was

  313. completely opposite

  314. to Herod's

  315. they couldn't wait

  316. to see the king

  317. I don't know

  318. whether you've ever

  319. asked yourself

  320. as you've read this account

  321. but why does

  322. Matthew include them

  323. in the gospel account

  324. they're strangers

  325. you know

  326. in some senses

  327. they shouldn't have been there

  328. or maybe a better question

  329. is

  330. why does God

  331. include them

  332. in the events

  333. of the saviour's birth

  334. and I think it's precisely

  335. because they were

  336. outsiders

  337. it's because the gospel

  338. is not just

  339. for the Jews

  340. Jesus wasn't just

  341. king of the Jews

  342. the gospel

  343. is for all people

  344. whoever we are

  345. whatever nationality

  346. background

  347. rich

  348. poor

  349. secular religious

  350. whoever we are

  351. we all need

  352. a saviour

  353. so it's for us

  354. all of us

  355. and it's for you

  356. so when they see

  357. the star again

  358. in verse 10

  359. it directs them

  360. to the house

  361. where Jesus was

  362. and we read

  363. in the

  364. NIV

  365. that they were

  366. overjoyed

  367. now

  368. if you have

  369. an English standard

  370. version

  371. it puts it

  372. a bit more flowery

  373. and I like this

  374. it says this

  375. they rejoiced

  376. exceedingly

  377. with great joy

  378. all right

  379. that's pretty

  380. overjoyed

  381. isn't it

  382. that's pretty good

  383. that's pretty accurate

  384. to how

  385. how they responded

  386. when they went

  387. into the house

  388. they prostrated

  389. themselves

  390. so they fell

  391. flat

  392. on the floor

  393. and worshipped

  394. before Jesus

  395. now this

  396. is the right

  397. response

  398. to the king

  399. of kings

  400. this is the

  401. right response

  402. to the king

  403. at Christmas

  404. and always

  405. joyful worship

  406. falling on our

  407. faces in wonder

  408. and submission

  409. that God's ruler

  410. come to earth

  411. in humility

  412. as a helpless

  413. baby

  414. how much did

  415. they understand

  416. about Jesus

  417. how much did

  418. they understand

  419. about the king

  420. we don't know

  421. exactly

  422. but the gifts

  423. they bought

  424. were not only

  425. very costly

  426. but they also

  427. were loaded

  428. with prophetic

  429. meaning

  430. they bought

  431. gold

  432. a suitable

  433. gift

  434. for a king

  435. so they were

  436. saying by

  437. presenting this

  438. king

  439. this gift

  440. he is a king

  441. they bought

  442. frankincense

  443. which is an

  444. incense used

  445. by priests

  446. in worship

  447. in worship

  448. of God

  449. so by giving

  450. him this gift

  451. they were saying

  452. he is God

  453. myrrh

  454. is a gum

  455. resin

  456. which was

  457. used

  458. in embalming

  459. dead bodies

  460. so they were

  461. saying by

  462. presenting this

  463. gift that he

  464. was born

  465. to die

  466. did they know

  467. it was so that

  468. he would save

  469. his people

  470. from their

  471. sins

  472. we don't

  473. know

  474. but their

  475. limited

  476. knowledge of

  477. the king

  478. was enough

  479. to produce

  480. awe

  481. wonder

  482. and joyful

  483. worship

  484. how much

  485. more

  486. with our

  487. knowledge

  488. of Jesus

  489. through

  490. the gospels

  491. through the

  492. cross

  493. through the

  494. resurrection

  495. through the

  496. ascension

  497. how much

  498. more should

  499. we fall

  500. prostrate

  501. before him

  502. in humble

  503. in humble

  504. but joyful

  505. worship

  506. i'd like to

  507. show you a

  508. little picture

  509. to illustrate

  510. this

  511. this is

  512. emerald pool

  513. in dominica

  514. it's probably

  515. my favourite

  516. place on the

  517. planet

  518. you can

  519. probably

  520. appreciate

  521. some of its

  522. beauty just

  523. by this

  524. picture

  525. but look

  526. if i was

  527. to tell

  528. you how

  529. you get

  530. to it

  531. you'd

  532. be surprised

  533. you get

  534. to it by

  535. leaving the

  536. hot caribbean

  537. sun

  538. trekking

  539. down through

  540. the cool

  541. rainforest

  542. and you're

  543. surrounded by

  544. towering

  545. trees

  546. and beautiful

  547. fauna

  548. you can hear

  549. birdsong

  550. and as you

  551. get closer

  552. to the

  553. waterfall

  554. you can hear

  555. the increased

  556. sound

  557. building up

  558. of this

  559. waterfall

  560. and then it

  561. comes into

  562. sight

  563. and this is

  564. what you

  565. see

  566. so i think

  567. maybe now

  568. you appreciate

  569. even more

  570. than just

  571. the picture

  572. you have a

  573. little more

  574. knowledge

  575. but let me

  576. tell you this

  577. the only way

  578. you can

  579. fully appreciate

  580. it is to

  581. go there

  582. if you ever

  583. get the

  584. opportunity

  585. i recommend

  586. it

  587. you get the

  588. full experience

  589. you don't just

  590. hear you don't

  591. just see

  592. but you are

  593. you are

  594. you are there

  595. to experience

  596. it

  597. so we can have

  598. some knowledge

  599. of the poor

  600. or a fuller

  601. knowledge

  602. but experience

  603. brings more

  604. wonder

  605. and in a

  606. similar way

  607. the wise men

  608. had knowledge

  609. of who

  610. jesus was

  611. but we

  612. have a

  613. fuller

  614. knowledge

  615. through the

  616. new testament

  617. we know

  618. more of who

  619. he is

  620. what he

  621. came to

  622. earth to

  623. do

  624. his ascension

  625. and his

  626. rule in

  627. heaven now

  628. but beyond

  629. head knowledge

  630. if we've

  631. experienced

  632. jesus

  633. forgiving us

  634. and bringing

  635. us into

  636. god's

  637. family

  638. being our

  639. kind shepherd

  640. we of all

  641. people

  642. should fall

  643. to our

  644. knees in

  645. joyful

  646. worship

  647. so let me

  648. just draw

  649. this to

  650. a conclusion

  651. we've seen

  652. that the

  653. arrival of

  654. god's

  655. promised

  656. king

  657. provoked

  658. heart

  659. responses

  660. of

  661. aggression

  662. from

  663. herod

  664. and

  665. adoration

  666. from the

  667. wise men

  668. we're left

  669. with some

  670. questions

  671. perhaps some

  672. personal

  673. questions

  674. what is

  675. our heart

  676. response

  677. to jesus

  678. god's

  679. king

  680. messiah

  681. and savior

  682. have you

  683. experienced

  684. this forgiveness

  685. this

  686. reconciliation

  687. to god

  688. the purpose

  689. for the

  690. king coming

  691. have you

  692. experienced

  693. that yourself

  694. he came

  695. for you

  696. and you

  697. can

  698. receive

  699. that

  700. forgiveness

  701. and that

  702. new life

  703. even today

  704. lastly

  705. we should

  706. all be

  707. moved

  708. in joyful

  709. worship

  710. my question

  711. is are we

  712. moved in

  713. joyful worship

  714. as we

  715. look at

  716. jesus

  717. today

  718. let me

  719. pray

  720. father

  721. we

  722. christmas

  723. time

  724. we're

  725. faced

  726. with so

  727. much

  728. myth

  729. and so

  730. much

  731. things

  732. that aren't

  733. true

  734. but are

  735. exciting

  736. in various

  737. ways

  738. but lord

  739. when we

  740. dig deep

  741. into the

  742. real

  743. christmas

  744. story

  745. we see

  746. the king

  747. of the

  748. universe

  749. being born

  750. as a

  751. baby

  752. born to

  753. die

  754. as a

  755. messiah

  756. who gives

  757. his life

  758. for his

  759. people

  760. father

  761. help us

  762. today

  763. and going

  764. forward

  765. to have

  766. the right

  767. reaction

  768. to the

  769. king of

  770. the jews

  771. the king

  772. of the

  773. universe

  774. jesus

  775. amen

  776. as

  777. Thank you.
