  1. That's Romans chapter 7, verses 7 through 25 on page 1133 of your church Bibles.

    Romans 7:7–25

  2. What shall we say then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not. Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.

  3. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, you shall not covet.

  4. But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting.

  5. For apart from the law, sin was dead. Once I was alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

  6. I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

  7. For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.

  8. So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good.

  9. Did that which is good then become death to me? By no means.

  10. Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, he used what is good to bring about my death,

  11. so that through the commandment, sin might become utterly sinful.

  12. We know that the law is spiritual, but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

  13. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. For what I hate, I do.

  14. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

  15. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

  16. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.

  17. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

  18. For I do not know, I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do.

  19. This I keep on doing.

  20. Now, if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

  21. So I find this law at work. Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

  22. For in my inner being I delight in God's law, but I see another law at work in me,

  23. waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.

  24. What a wretched man I am.

  25. Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

  26. Thanks be to God who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  27. So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

  28. This is the word of the Lord.

  29. Thank you, Dan, for reading for us.

  30. Before we make a sort of proper start, I kind of want to begin with an apology.

  31. I know that's probably not a great way to start a sermon, but I want to apologize.

  32. I'm not actually really going to cover verses 7 to 13 in the passage that Dan just read for us.

  33. You might look down at it now and you'll notice that it is kind of bookended by the repetition of the word nevertheless, right?

  34. Nevertheless is said in verse 7 and in verse 13.

  35. And in that sort of nevertheless section, Paul is asking a specific question that kind of addresses some of the things we were looking at last week.

  36. So he's basically saying, listen, if the law, as in the rules, won't make us holy, are the rules bad?

  37. Now, if I'd been a really smart pastor, I would have covered all of that material last week.

  38. But here's the news for you that I start with is I'm not really that smart.

  39. And so we're not actually going to cover those verses really in very much detail.

  40. My hope is that as Dan read them, you mostly understood them, that while the law is not able to make us holy, the law itself is good.

  41. The problem is not with the law.

  42. The problem is with us.

  43. And in the interest of time, I am going to not say anything else about verses 7 to 13.

  44. And you can ask me later if you want to.

  45. And we're going to zoom in on verses 14 to 25.

  46. And I'm going to pray as we look at those.

  47. Let's pray and ask for the Lord's help.

  48. Gracious God and loving Heavenly Father, thank you that despite our weakness, my weakness, still your word is powerful and effective.

  49. Amen.

  50. Sharper than a double-edged sword.

  51. Able to cut right into us and right through us and what we're thinking and feeling and perceiving.

  52. To teach us the truth of who you are and what you've done for us in the Lord Jesus.

  53. Lord, how we pray this morning that you might help us to be good listeners to your word.

  54. As we pray in Jesus' name.

  55. Amen.

  56. Amen.

  57. Now, the big idea in our passage this morning is that the hardest part of being a Christian is not the struggle that we have with the things outside in the world.

  58. You know, the biggest struggle for the Christian is not that people might tease you for being a Christian, that people might disrespect you or give you a hard time.

  59. That is difficult, but it's not the most difficult thing about being a Christian.

  60. Nor is the most difficult thing about being a Christian the struggles that might be in this room with one another that we might have.

  61. Again, it's hard, isn't it, when church is not running well or people in church don't behave as they should.

  62. But the point of the passage is that that itself is not the hardest thing about the Christian life.

  63. The battle for the Christian life is not an external one, but an internal one.

  64. The battle that the Christian faces is the battle with indwelling sin.

  65. That despite the best of our intentions, despite the privilege of having the Bible in our hands readily available to us,

  66. despite being in a vibrant church community and church family,

  67. despite having that great wealth of Christian resources at our fingertips on the internet,

  68. despite having friends who will challenge us and encourage us and pray for us,

  69. despite all those good Christian books that you have on your shelves at home,

  70. still we get angry.

  71. Still we're bitter.

  72. Still we lust after things that we should not have.

  73. Still we think more of ourselves than we should.

  74. Still we find ourselves gossiping and talking about others in ways that we shouldn't.

  75. Still we covet the success of others.

  76. We worship material success.

  77. We crave the next purchase.

  78. We imagine that comfort will bring us contentment or that material success will deliver us happiness.

  79. We even lie in our beds at night,

  80. imagining winning arguments that we feel like we lost during the day.

  81. In our idle moments, our thoughts don't wander to God and his goodness,

  82. but to trivial nonsense.

  83. We seek escape in the sort of endless, mindless banality of our phones.

  84. And there's no let up, right?

  85. If you speak to an honest Christian, honest Christians are hard to find, aren't they?

  86. But if you find one and you ask them,

  87. it doesn't matter whether you've been a Christian 10, 20, 30, 60, 70 years,

  88. the battle still rages.

  89. Augustine, the great African bishop writing in the fourth century,

  90. describes his Christian life as a struggle every day.

  91. Augustine was probably one of the greatest minds that ever lived.

  92. And that's how he described his Christian life.

  93. He talks about his inability to delete images of the past,

  94. or even to mourn for them properly.

  95. He says this,

  96. But for the present, I am a burden to myself.

  97. There is a struggle between joys over which I should be weeping

  98. and regrets at matters over which I ought to be rejoicing.

  99. And which side has the victory, I do not know.

  100. Alas, Lord, have mercy upon me, wretch that I am.

  101. Paul describes it.

  102. Verse 24 of chapter 7 in our passage this morning.

  103. What a wretched man I am.

  104. Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

  105. Now, I wonder if I can ask you, before we go any further,

  106. if you're willing to be that honest about your own Christian life.

  107. Do you know how Paul feels?

  108. How Augustine feels?

  109. I know I do.

  110. The longer I go on as a Christian,

  111. the more acutely I am aware that the fight for my Christian life

  112. is not with anybody else, but it's with me.

  113. It's in me.

  114. That whilst knowing the gospel is true,

  115. and understanding that God loves me,

  116. and he gave his son for me,

  117. still, as I think about my battle for holiness,

  118. I feel weak and wretched.

  119. You know, past sins that I thought I'd be well beyond by now.

  120. Unwanted thoughts, hard-heartedness,

  121. unkindness, thoughtlessness,

  122. the absence of generosity,

  123. those aren't imposed upon me from the outside,

  124. but they are in me,

  125. and come out from me.

  126. And if you're honest this morning,

  127. that's true of you too.

  128. And that's why Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7:14–25

  129. verses 14 to 25 are in our Bibles.

  130. Because they want us to understand why that is the case,

  131. and where to find hope in that situation.

  132. So let's think about this together.

  133. Firstly, let's think about the nature of the battle.

  134. The battle that we feel in our Christian lives

  135. is described by Paul as a war

  136. between what he describes as the inner man,

  137. the inner man who, according to verse 22,

  138. loves or delights in God's law,

  139. loves the expression of God's righteousness,

  140. loves to obey,

  141. the inner us that considers God's law as spiritual,

  142. in verse 14,

  143. this inner us that wants to do good,

  144. in verse 21,

  145. and then what he calls the flesh.

  146. Verse 14,

  147. our NIVs have weirdly translated it,

  148. I am unspiritual.

  149. Really it is literally,

  150. I'm in the flesh.

  151. The war is between the new inner man,

  152. the inner us,

  153. and this flesh.

  154. Sin living in me,

  155. he calls it in verse 17.

  156. The body of death,

  157. he calls it in verse 24.

  158. And these two realities

  159. inside the life of the Christian

  160. are at war with one another.

  161. New life by the spirit

  162. that agrees with God

  163. and wants to live for him

  164. and the old flesh

  165. that still loves to sin.

  166. Paul summarizes it,

  167. verse 22,

  168. for in my inner being,

  169. I delight in God's law,

  170. verse 23,

  171. but I see another law at work in me,

  172. waging war against the law of my mind

  173. and making me a prisoner

  174. of the law of sin

  175. at work within me.

  176. Let me say,

  177. this is such an important category

  178. for you to understand

  179. if you're a Christian this morning.

  180. That whilst if you're a Christian,

  181. you are born again,

  182. you've been given new life by the spirit,

  183. a life that is turned to God

  184. and trusted in him,

  185. has turned from its sin

  186. and longs to live for him.

  187. Though you are fully forgiven,

  188. justified,

  189. declared not guilty before the perfect God,

  190. you have that in lieu of judgment day

  191. even now,

  192. still,

  193. you will not be perfect in this life.

  194. You will never be perfect in this life.

  195. As long as you're alive in the flesh,

  196. you will still carry around

  197. an old sinful nature,

  198. a defeated sinful nature,

  199. yes,

  200. a dead sinful nature

  201. that's dead at the cross,

  202. yes,

  203. yes,

  204. the penalty and the moral debt

  205. that that nature owes

  206. has been written off in Christ,

  207. but you still carry it

  208. for now.

  209. So that,

  210. as Luther would say,

  211. of you,

  212. Martin Luther,

  213. the great reformer,

  214. would say,

  215. you are both a saint

  216. and a sinner.

  217. You are holy in Christ

  218. and you still fight temptation

  219. and the wickedness of your flesh.

  220. If you're not a Christian this morning,

  221. it's great you're here,

  222. we're really pleased

  223. you're with us this morning,

  224. welcome.

  225. This is not your battle,

  226. right?

  227. This is the Christian's battle,

  228. not the non-Christian's battle.

  229. Not because if you're not a Christian

  230. this morning,

  231. you don't have a moral conscience

  232. or feel bad about the things

  233. that you've done.

  234. No,

  235. rather because it is impossible,

  236. and Paul has said this

  237. over and over again,

  238. it is impossible for any of us

  239. in our own nature,

  240. by ourselves,

  241. to say that we delight in his law,

  242. right?

  243. By ourselves,

  244. without this new life

  245. by the Spirit

  246. that he gives

  247. as we turn to him,

  248. we will not delight in his law.

  249. If you're not a Christian,

  250. the law is a burden to you,

  251. right?

  252. The law is a problem.

  253. The law,

  254. the list of what God expects

  255. of you,

  256. is a burden to you.

  257. It's a list of your failures.

  258. It's like that for all of us.

  259. It's like a charge sheet

  260. against us.

  261. This is what we did not do.

  262. And we hate the law

  263. because it condemns us.

  264. So even if we're earnestly

  265. trying to obey God's moral law,

  266. even if you think,

  267. well,

  268. I'm trying to live

  269. with a clear conscience,

  270. I'm trying to be good,

  271. I'm trying to do to others

  272. as I'd have them do to me,

  273. let me tell you,

  274. that's not delighting

  275. in God's law

  276. as it's written here.

  277. That's using God's law

  278. for your own ends.

  279. And so the battle you face

  280. is a real battle,

  281. but it's not the one

  282. being described here.

  283. In fact,

  284. it's a worse battle

  285. because you're trying

  286. to use the law

  287. to earn God's favor

  288. and that is a battle

  289. that everybody loses.

  290. Our battle is that

  291. we delight in God's law,

  292. but still we fight

  293. an old nature.

  294. Now,

  295. there are some Christians

  296. and some preachers,

  297. especially on the internet,

  298. there are especially books

  299. that you might read

  300. which try to deny this battle.

  301. They'll tell you,

  302. oh,

  303. no,

  304. no,

  305. no,

  306. no,

  307. no,

  308. Paul,

  309. it's not describing

  310. the Christian life here.

  311. You're fully redeemed

  312. in Christ.

  313. Total freedom from sin,

  314. they'll tell you.

  315. If only you come

  316. and receive this particular blessing,

  317. you will escape

  318. that temptation to sin.

  319. If you come to this meeting,

  320. if you develop this habit,

  321. then you'll be free

  322. from the battle.

  323. Paul says,

  324. that is utter nonsense.

  325. The battle

  326. is the Christian life.

  327. And in a way,

  328. in a sort of paradoxical way,

  329. it is feeling

  330. and knowing

  331. and experiencing

  332. that battle

  333. in your heart

  334. which helps you know

  335. that you're a Christian

  336. because it means

  337. that God has made you alive

  338. and there is something

  339. to fight

  340. the sinful nature.

  341. So that's the nature

  342. of the battle.

  343. Next thing with me

  344. about the ferocity

  345. of the battle.

  346. Really,

  347. these are the same two points

  348. but I've split them up

  349. just so that you might remember them.

  350. And I don't want us

  351. to miss this

  352. or deal with it too quickly.

  353. Look at verse 15

  354. and notice how Paul

  355. describes this.

  356. I do not understand

  357. what I do.

  358. for what I want to do,

  359. I do not do.

  360. But what I hate,

  361. I do.

  362. Here it is then.

  363. The battle means

  364. that in an important sense,

  365. life for the Christian

  366. is mysteriously difficult.

  367. We don't understand

  368. what we do.

  369. We shock ourselves.

  370. We find ourselves

  371. capable of things

  372. we thought we would not

  373. be capable of.

  374. I thought I was well beyond that.

  375. I didn't think

  376. I would struggle with that.

  377. I've noticed

  378. that other people do

  379. but I didn't think

  380. that would be me.

  381. I can't imagine

  382. that I would still be bitter

  383. towards them

  384. so many years on.

  385. I can't imagine

  386. that I'd be so petty.

  387. But I'd be so committed

  388. to people pleasing

  389. that I'd be so insecure.

  390. I would have thought

  391. that that gossip

  392. wouldn't interest me anymore.

  393. I would have thought

  394. I would have forgotten

  395. those images by now

  396. but I haven't.

  397. And so there's a sort

  398. of insanity to this

  399. that our lives

  400. are not marked

  401. by perfect holiness

  402. but by surprising sin.

  403. So much so

  404. that we find ourselves

  405. doing the very things

  406. that we hate.

  407. Things maybe

  408. that others do to us

  409. and we hate them

  410. doing them to us

  411. and now we find ourselves

  412. doing the same things.

  413. But actually

  414. it's worse than that

  415. isn't it?

  416. It's not just

  417. that we do wrong things

  418. that we wish we wouldn't.

  419. Verse 19

  420. For I do not do

  421. the good I want to do

  422. but the evil I do not

  423. want to do

  424. this I keep on doing.

  425. This is what we were

  426. thinking about

  427. with the children

  428. isn't it?

  429. These are the sins

  430. of omission.

  431. Good things

  432. that we wanted to do

  433. that we find

  434. we don't do.

  435. You know

  436. I really didn't mean

  437. to stop reading

  438. my Bible.

  439. I really had intended

  440. to give more generously

  441. to gospel ministry.

  442. I really did want

  443. to be regular

  444. at church.

  445. I really did want

  446. to share the gospel

  447. with my colleagues

  448. before I left

  449. that place of work.

  450. I really did intend

  451. to send a word

  452. of encouragement

  453. to that Christian friend

  454. but the good

  455. I wanted to do

  456. I didn't do it.

  457. Now obviously

  458. Paul understands

  459. that this dynamic

  460. is a symptom

  461. of the war

  462. or the battle

  463. that he's in.

  464. It's important isn't it?

  465. It's not this

  466. new nature

  467. from the spirit

  468. that is sinning

  469. it's the old him

  470. that is not yet

  471. got rid of completely.

  472. Right?

  473. Look at verse 20

  474. he says

  475. now if what I do

  476. now Dan

  477. this is difficult

  478. isn't it?

  479. Right?

  480. It's harder to read

  481. this than you think.

  482. Now if

  483. I do

  484. what I do

  485. not want to do

  486. it's no longer

  487. I who do it

  488. but sin living in me

  489. that does it.

  490. Right?

  491. Now he's not meaning

  492. that as an excuse

  493. it's not like

  494. haha it wasn't really me

  495. it was sin living in me

  496. he's not saying it like that

  497. rather he's explaining

  498. the battle he's in

  499. the ferociousness of it

  500. where we find ourselves

  501. doing what deep down

  502. we don't want to do

  503. and not doing

  504. what we really do

  505. want to do

  506. as we carry around

  507. this sinful nature

  508. that's dead

  509. but still twitching.

  510. It's worth thinking

  511. about how this works out

  512. for us as Christians

  513. I don't know a lot

  514. about war

  515. I know there are some people

  516. in the room who do

  517. in God's kindness

  518. I've never had to fight

  519. in a war

  520. but I imagine

  521. that those

  522. in the most danger

  523. in a war

  524. are those who don't

  525. really realise

  526. they're in it

  527. right?

  528. Those who've lost

  529. concentration

  530. those who've forgotten

  531. that they're in a battle

  532. those who've let

  533. their guard down

  534. those who've turned up

  535. ill prepared

  536. what's the phrase

  537. like bringing a knife

  538. to a gunfight

  539. it's those people

  540. isn't it?

  541. And so it is

  542. in the Christian life

  543. and that's why

  544. Paul writes this passage

  545. he's not writing this

  546. to depress you

  547. or me

  548. to think that

  549. Christian living

  550. is a hopeless task

  551. he's going to go

  552. to great lengths

  553. to prove that

  554. Christian living

  555. is not a hopeless task

  556. we'll come to that

  557. in a bit

  558. and in weeks to come

  559. but the point here

  560. is to warn you

  561. to warn you

  562. and me

  563. that there is a

  564. ferocious battle

  565. inside of myself

  566. and I cannot

  567. just thoughtlessly

  568. live my life

  569. you know

  570. you're

  571. if you're a Christian

  572. you cannot just

  573. thoughtlessly

  574. follow your wants

  575. and your desires

  576. because your wants

  577. and your desires

  578. are the location

  579. of the battle

  580. that he describes

  581. if you carelessly

  582. follow what it is

  583. that you want to do

  584. you will find yourself

  585. in terrible places

  586. not every desire

  587. that you have

  588. will be a prompting

  589. of the spirit

  590. not every aspiration

  591. that you have

  592. will be a godly one

  593. not every dream

  594. that you wish for

  595. will be good

  596. if it happens

  597. because there's a battle

  598. going on

  599. and it's not out there

  600. it's in here

  601. and it's ferocious

  602. !

  603. Just think about

  604. how this cuts through

  605. naivety

  606. right?

  607. Think about it

  608. from two angles

  609. notice that Paul

  610. is essentially saying

  611. that you will

  612. surprise yourself

  613. I will surprise myself

  614. at what I am capable of

  615. even as a Christian

  616. now if I find myself

  617. ever thinking

  618. oh I wouldn't do that

  619. I'm in grave danger

  620. I'm the guy who forgot

  621. he was on a battlefield

  622. right?

  623. Or if I imagine

  624. that you know what

  625. I don't really need

  626. God's moral law

  627. I don't really need

  628. his moral instruction

  629. I don't really need

  630. the Bible to teach me

  631. what it is that God values

  632. because I can just

  633. kind of follow my instincts

  634. I kind of know

  635. what God wants

  636. uh uh

  637. no

  638. because that's where

  639. the battle is

  640. it will not be okay

  641. if we imagine

  642. that just because

  643. we're Christians

  644. all our ambitions

  645. will no longer be

  646. tainted by selfishness

  647. or that we won't be

  648. tempted to be unfaithful

  649. in our friendships

  650. or our marriages

  651. that we won't kind of

  652. lose it with our kids

  653. we're wrong

  654. if we don't understand

  655. that we'll be tempted

  656. not to do the things

  657. that would be

  658. spiritually best

  659. for us to do

  660. you know

  661. if you

  662. if you live your

  663. Christian life

  664. without imagining

  665. that your desire

  666. to attend church

  667. will always be

  668. equivalent to the amount

  669. that you should attend

  670. church in order to be

  671. spiritually healthy

  672. you are gravely mistaken

  673. because your desires

  674. will not match up

  675. it's the same with

  676. giving and speaking

  677. and praying

  678. we'll have good reasons

  679. won't we

  680. why we don't do

  681. those things

  682. you know it's true

  683. isn't it

  684. that our old nature

  685. although dead in Christ

  686. still twitches

  687. and has a really

  688. good lawyer

  689. right

  690. who's really good

  691. at persuading us

  692. that it's right

  693. when it's wrong

  694. and if we don't

  695. understand that

  696. we'll be hopelessly naive

  697. but the naivety works

  698. the other way around

  699. as well

  700. it means

  701. if you think

  702. if you're a Christian

  703. you think

  704. that other Christians

  705. will not let you down

  706. or that if they do

  707. let you down

  708. somehow the gospel

  709. is not true

  710. and really you should

  711. give up on the whole thing

  712. then you are

  713. hopelessly naive

  714. because this is

  715. every Christian's battle

  716. right

  717. Christians around you

  718. will sin against you

  719. and you will need

  720. to forgive them

  721. church leaders

  722. will let you down

  723. church pastors

  724. will be imperfect

  725. perhaps imperfect

  726. in ways that you

  727. would be better

  728. than they are

  729. Christian friends

  730. will gossip about you

  731. Christian friends

  732. will hurt you

  733. be unkind to you

  734. upset you

  735. behave in ways

  736. towards you

  737. that you will

  738. not believe

  739. because they too

  740. are in this battle

  741. and sometimes

  742. they find themselves

  743. not doing the good

  744. things that they

  745. want to do

  746. but doing the evil

  747. things that they

  748. wish they weren't

  749. doing

  750. because they're

  751. in the battle

  752. now this doesn't

  753. mean of course

  754. that we shouldn't

  755. have high expectations

  756. of one another

  757. or that we should

  758. live as if it

  759. doesn't matter

  760. of course it does

  761. matter

  762. there's great grief

  763. in these words

  764. isn't there

  765. rather the point

  766. is that you

  767. shouldn't pretend

  768. that this is not

  769. the world that we

  770. live in

  771. we shouldn't

  772. imagine that the

  773. Lord's prayer

  774. instructs us to

  775. seek forgiveness

  776. as we forgive

  777. those who sin

  778. against us

  779. for no reason

  780. because if we do

  781. we'll spend much

  782. of our life

  783. sorely disappointed

  784. and in grave

  785. danger

  786. you know if we

  787. organize church

  788. life as if our

  789. members and our

  790. leaders are not

  791. tempted to sin

  792. we're hopelessly

  793. naive

  794. over the years

  795. I've had a number

  796. of friends

  797. who are

  798. alcoholics

  799. most of them

  800. Christians

  801. church members

  802. one of them

  803. a pastor

  804. and what's

  805. obvious is that

  806. the most destructive

  807. alcoholics are

  808. those who will

  809. not admit

  810. that they've got

  811. a problem with

  812. alcohol

  813. you know they

  814. pretend they've

  815. got it under

  816. control

  817. no no no

  818. it's not really

  819. an issue for

  820. me

  821. when really

  822. they don't

  823. but for those

  824. who will admit

  825. it

  826. for them it

  827. requires a level

  828. of seriousness

  829. having admitted

  830. that this is

  831. their struggle

  832. it requires a

  833. level of seriousness

  834. to deal with it

  835. doesn't it

  836. we're not going

  837. to have any

  838. alcohol in the

  839. house

  840. I'm not going

  841. to have the

  842. first drink

  843. I'm going to

  844. be really honest

  845. with my close

  846. friends and my

  847. family

  848. well listen if

  849. you're a Christian

  850. this morning

  851. you might not

  852. be an alcoholic

  853. but let me tell

  854. you that you and

  855. I in the flesh

  856. are sinaholics

  857. we are addicted

  858. in the flesh

  859. to selfish

  860. rebellion

  861. that the

  862. inner us

  863. the new life

  864. by the spirit

  865. absolutely hates

  866. but it's still

  867. there

  868. and the most

  869. dangerous Christian

  870. is the Christian

  871. who doesn't

  872. recognize it

  873. and the safest

  874. Christian

  875. is the one

  876. who takes it

  877. seriously

  878. who is honest

  879. about it

  880. who deliberately

  881. steers away

  882. from the desires

  883. of their hearts

  884. who doubts

  885. their gut

  886. instincts

  887. who is quick

  888. to repent

  889. when challenged

  890. who doesn't

  891. fake it

  892. brush it under

  893. the carpet

  894. or keep people

  895. at arm's length

  896. church is at

  897. their best

  898. when people are

  899. honest with one

  900. another

  901. forgiving each

  902. other

  903. where corporate

  904. repentance

  905. in the life

  906. of the church

  907. it's not

  908. it's just that

  909. thing that we

  910. do right

  911. that's kind

  912. of you know

  913. traditional

  914. maybe

  915. no repentance

  916. is a moment

  917. of honesty

  918. in a world

  919. of fakers

  920. right

  921. where people

  922. around you

  923. encourage you

  924. to feed this

  925. new inner man

  926. and starve

  927. the old sinful

  928. nature of worldly

  929. indulgence

  930. let's finish

  931. though

  932. if it feels

  933. a bit hopeless

  934. let's finish

  935. by looking at

  936. the victory

  937. in the battle

  938. the victory

  939. of the battle

  940. look with me

  941. at verses 24

  942. and 25

  943. let me read

  944. them to you

  945. as we finish

  946. what a wretched

  947. man I am

  948. who will rescue

  949. me from this

  950. body that is

  951. subject to death

  952. thanks be to

  953. God who delivers

  954. me through

  955. Jesus Christ

  956. our Lord

  957. notice then

  958. that hope

  959. hope for victory

  960. is not in our

  961. own strength

  962. it's not that we

  963. are different

  964. from those who

  965. have gone about

  966. I know

  967. I know that

  968. other Christians

  969. have this struggle

  970. but I don't

  971. really and I'm

  972. going to be

  973. victorious

  974. it's not that

  975. is it

  976. no

  977. the hope

  978. is that

  979. Jesus

  980. delivers us

  981. Jesus

  982. will deliver

  983. us in the

  984. end

  985. that is the

  986. hope

  987. that in

  988. the present

  989. strength

  990. and future

  991. victory

  992. will be ours

  993. in the Lord

  994. Jesus Christ

  995. so that we

  996. fight the battle

  997. not with our

  998. own resources

  999. not even

  1000. with the

  1001. resources

  1002. of the

  1003. law

  1004. for it

  1005. has none

  1006. to offer

  1007. but with

  1008. the resources

  1009. of the

  1010. grace

  1011. that is

  1012. ours

  1013. in the

  1014. Lord

  1015. Jesus

  1016. Christ

  1017. I

  1018. think about

  1019. this this

  1020. week

  1021. thinking

  1022. why

  1023. why do

  1024. some

  1025. Christians

  1026. resist

  1027. Romans 7

  1028. why do

  1029. we

  1030. why are we

  1031. tempted to

  1032. think this is

  1033. not really

  1034. what the

  1035. Christian life

  1036. is like

  1037. or should

  1038. be like

  1039. and I

  1040. think it's

  1041. because we

  1042. think that

  1043. really it

  1044. should be

  1045. easier

  1046. we imagine

  1047. don't we

  1048. well

  1049. the Lord

  1050. the Lord

  1051. could make

  1052. me perfect

  1053. couldn't he

  1054. surely the Lord

  1055. could liberate me

  1056. from this

  1057. particular struggle

  1058. surely the

  1059. Lord could

  1060. defeat all

  1061. my impulses

  1062. to selfishness

  1063. my temptations

  1064. to pride

  1065. surely my

  1066. addictions are

  1067. nothing to

  1068. God are they

  1069. why would he

  1070. make his

  1071. fight

  1072. can't be right

  1073. can he

  1074. if God

  1075. loved me

  1076. why would he

  1077. make me

  1078. fight like

  1079. that

  1080. interestingly

  1081. Augustine who

  1082. he started with

  1083. that fourth

  1084. century African

  1085. bishop

  1086. wrestled with

  1087. this question

  1088. in a book

  1089. called the

  1090. confessions

  1091. when Augustine

  1092. was a young

  1093. Christian he

  1094. read Romans

  1095. 7 and

  1096. assumed that

  1097. this was

  1098. written about

  1099. someone who

  1100. wasn't a

  1101. Christian

  1102. later in his

  1103. Christian life

  1104. he came to

  1105. realise no

  1106. actually this

  1107. is written

  1108. about me

  1109. this is the

  1110. Christian life

  1111. and then he

  1112. was thinking

  1113. well why is

  1114. this the

  1115. Christian life

  1116. why would

  1117. God make

  1118. the Christian

  1119. life a

  1120. battle

  1121. well this

  1122. is the answer

  1123. that he came

  1124. up with

  1125. his answer

  1126. to the

  1127. question why

  1128. why make

  1129. it so

  1130. difficult

  1131. was joy

  1132. joy

  1133. might be

  1134. surprising to

  1135. you his

  1136. illustration

  1137. which I

  1138. don't think

  1139. scans very

  1140. well but

  1141. you might

  1142. imagine it

  1143. was that

  1144. the emperor

  1145. does not

  1146. have great

  1147. joy over

  1148. land that

  1149. already belongs

  1150. to him

  1151. but has

  1152. great joy

  1153. over land

  1154. he's conquered

  1155. right

  1156. his other

  1157. illustration

  1158. which is

  1159. perhaps easier

  1160. to connect

  1161. with is that

  1162. to enjoy a

  1163. great meal

  1164. and a fine

  1165. glass of

  1166. wine you

  1167. must first

  1168. be hungry

  1169. and thirsty

  1170. and so

  1171. he says

  1172. here

  1173. in order

  1174. to enjoy

  1175. the victory

  1176. of Jesus

  1177. we need

  1178. to be in

  1179. the battle

  1180. our ongoing

  1181. battle with

  1182. sin is

  1183. not meant

  1184. to ruin

  1185. us and

  1186. defeat us

  1187. and depress

  1188. us but

  1189. is meant

  1190. to be a

  1191. perpetual

  1192. reminder to

  1193. you and

  1194. me that

  1195. we need

  1196. Jesus

  1197. and Jesus

  1198. is brilliant

  1199. and he's

  1200. all sufficient

  1201. for me

  1202. and I

  1203. need to

  1204. keep

  1205. repenting

  1206. of my

  1207. sin and

  1208. turning to

  1209. him

  1210. because joy

  1211. and we

  1212. experience it

  1213. in part

  1214. now but

  1215. we'll

  1216. experience it

  1217. fully in

  1218. eternity

  1219. is that

  1220. Jesus is

  1221. victorious

  1222. that in

  1223. the ferocity

  1224. of the

  1225. battle there

  1226. is one

  1227. man who

  1228. stands tall

  1229. and that

  1230. man fights

  1231. for me

  1232. and his

  1233. name is

  1234. Jesus

  1235. so I

  1236. understand

  1237. when I

  1238. didn't lose

  1239. my temper

  1240. even when my

  1241. plans were

  1242. thwarted

  1243. and my

  1244. day came

  1245. crashing

  1246. down

  1247. that

  1248. patience

  1249. wasn't

  1250. my

  1251. patience

  1252. that was

  1253. the Lord

  1254. Jesus

  1255. at work

  1256. that was

  1257. his victory

  1258. you know

  1259. sound the

  1260. trumpets

  1261. wave the

  1262. flags

  1263. Jesus

  1264. won a

  1265. victory

  1266. in my

  1267. life

  1268. you know

  1269. when I

  1270. repented

  1271. to that

  1272. friend

  1273. against

  1274. whom

  1275. I

  1276. sinned

  1277. even

  1278. though

  1279. my

  1280. internal

  1281. lawyer

  1282. had

  1283. given

  1284. me

  1285. a

  1286. thousand

  1287. reasons

  1288. why

  1289. it

  1290. wasn't

  1291. really

  1292. my

  1293. fault

  1294. still

  1295. I

  1296. saw

  1297. my

  1298. sin

  1299. I

  1300. owned

  1301. it

  1302. I

  1303. said

  1304. sorry

  1305. for

  1306. it

  1307. that

  1308. was

  1309. Jesus

  1310. is

  1311. victory

  1312. sound

  1313. the

  1314. trumpets

  1315. wave

  1316. the

  1317. flags

  1318. victory

  1319. for

  1320. Jesus

  1321. you know

  1322. see I

  1323. came to

  1324. church

  1325. I

  1326. read my

  1327. bible

  1328. I

  1329. prayed

  1330. honesty

  1331. I

  1332. love

  1333. sincerely

  1334. I

  1335. gave

  1336. sacrificially

  1337. that

  1338. wasn't

  1339. me

  1340. that

  1341. was

  1342. victory

  1343. for

  1344. Jesus

  1345. wave

  1346. the

  1347. flag

  1348. sound

  1349. the

  1350. trumpets

  1351. he

  1352. is

  1353. great

  1354. he

  1355. is

  1356. my

  1357. victor

  1358. one

  1359. day

  1360. I

  1361. will

  1362. be

  1363. free

  1364. from

  1365. sin

  1366. free

  1367. from

  1368. the

  1369. love

  1370. of

  1371. sin

  1372. free

  1373. from

  1374. the

  1375. desire

  1376. to

  1377. sin

  1378. I

  1379. will

  1380. live

  1381. in the

  1382. presence

  1383. of

  1384. my

  1385. Lord

  1386. and

  1387. really

  1388. it

  1389. will

  1390. be

  1391. the

  1392. sweetness

  1393. of

  1394. the

  1395. victory

  1396. over

  1397. sin

  1398. that

  1399. I

  1400. will

  1401. rejoice

  1402. in

  1403. I

  1404. have

  1405. been

  1406. forgiven

  1407. I

  1408. have

  1409. conquered

  1410. in

  1411. Christ

  1412. I

  1413. came

  1414. through

  1415. the

  1416. battle

  1417. victorious

  1418. because

  1419. of

  1420. Jesus

  1421. and

  1422. the

  1423. scars

  1424. will

  1425. be

  1426. the

  1427. stories

  1428. of

  1429. victory

  1430. and

  1431. not

  1432. the

  1433. stories

  1434. of

  1435. defeat

  1436. let

  1437. me

  1438. pray

  1439. for

  1440. us

  1441. oh

  1442. heavenly

  1443. father

  1444. please

  1445. help us

  1446. in these

  1447. moments

  1448. now

  1449. not

  1450. to do

  1451. that

  1452. silly

  1453. thing

  1454. that

  1455. Christians

  1456. are so

  1457. good

  1458. at

  1459. doing

  1460. which

  1461. is

  1462. pretending

  1463. that

  1464. we're

  1465. better

  1466. than

  1467. we

  1468. really

  1469. are

  1470. but

  1471. help

  1472. us

  1473. now

  1474. in

  1475. these

  1476. moments

  1477. in

  1478. our

  1479. hearts

  1480. before

  1481. you

  1482. to

  1483. be

  1484. really

  1485. honest

  1486. we

  1487. are

  1488. in

  1489. the

  1490. midst

  1491. of

  1492. the

  1493. battle

  1494. and

  1495. the

  1496. battle

  1497. is

  1498. littered

  1499. with

  1500. stories

  1501. of

  1502. our

  1503. own

  1504. personal

  1505. failure

  1506. but

  1507. also

  1508. with

  1509. victories

  1510. for

  1511. the

  1512. Lord

  1513. Jesus

  1514. and

  1515. we

  1516. thank

  1517. you

  1518. that

  1519. though

  1520. now

  1521. we

  1522. find

  1523. ourselves

  1524. in

  1525. a

  1526. ferocious

  1527. battle

  1528. we

  1529. know

  1530. one

  1531. day

  1532. the

  1533. ultimate

  1534. victory

  1535. will

  1536. be

  1537. ours

  1538. in

  1539. him

  1540. so

  1541. keep

  1542. our

  1543. hearts

  1544. turned

  1545. to

  1546. Christ

  1547. keep

  1548. us

  1549. looking

  1550. to

  1551. him

  1552. trusting

  1553. repenting

  1554. to

  1555. you

  1556. and

  1557. to

  1558. one

  1559. another

  1560. and

  1561. enjoying

  1562. this

  1563. great

  1564. joy

  1565. in

  1566. the

  1567. gospel

  1568. of

  1569. the

  1570. Lord

  1571. Jesus

  1572. Christ

  1573. Amen
