  1. Romans chapter 9, verse 1 to 29.

    Romans 9:1–29

  2. I speak the truth in Christ.

  3. I am not lying.

  4. My conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit.

  5. ! I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

  6. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people,

  7. those of my own race, the people of Israel.

  8. Theirs is the adoption to sonship.

  9. Theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law,

  10. the temple worship, and the promises.

  11. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah,

  12. who is God all over, forever praised. Amen.

  13. It is not as though God's word has failed.

  14. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

  15. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children.

  16. On the contrary, it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.

  17. In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God's children,

  18. but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.

  19. For this was how the promise was stated.

  20. At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.

  21. Not only that, but Rebecca's children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.

  22. Yet, before the twins were born, or had done anything good or bad,

  23. in order that God's purpose in election might stand,

  24. not by works, but by him who calls,

  25. she was told,

  26. the older will serve the younger.

  27. Just as it is written,

  28. Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.

  29. What then shall we say?

  30. Is God unjust?

  31. Not at all.

  32. For he says to Moses,

  33. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

  34. and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

  35. It does not, therefore,

  36. depend on human desire or effort,

  37. but on God's mercy.

  38. For scripture says to Pharaoh,

  39. I raised you up for this very purpose,

  40. that I might display my power in you,

  41. and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.

  42. Therefore,

  43. God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy,

  44. and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

  45. One of you will say to me,

  46. then why does God still blame us?

  47. For who is able to resist his will?

  48. But who are you,

  49. a human being,

  50. to talk back to God?

  51. Shall what is formed say to the one who formed us,

  52. and formed it?

  53. Why did you make me like this?

  54. Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay,

  55. some pottery for special purposes,

  56. and some for common use?

  57. What if God,

  58. although choosing to show his wrath,

  59. and make his power known,

  60. bore with great patience,

  61. the objects of his wrath,

  62. prepared for destruction?

  63. What if he did this,

  64. to make the riches of his glory known,

  65. to the objects of his mercy,

  66. whom he prepared in advance for glory?

  67. Even us,

  68. whom he also called,

  69. not only from the Jews,

  70. but also from the Gentiles.

  71. As he says in Hosea,

  72. I will call them my people,

  73. who are not my people,

  74. and I will call her my loved one,

  75. who is not my loved one.

  76. And,

  77. in the very place where it was said to them,

  78. you are not my people,

  79. there they will be called children of God,

  80. of the living God.

  81. Isaiah cries out concerning Israel,

  82. though the number of Israelites,

  83. be like the sand by the sea,

  84. only the remnant will be saved.

  85. For the Lord will carry out,

  86. his sentence on earth,

  87. with speed and finality.

  88. It is just as Isaiah said previously,

  89. unless the Lord Almighty,

  90. had left us descendants,

  91. we would have been like Sodom,

  92. we would have been like Gomorrah.

  93. Thanks so much, Jamal,

  94. for reading for us.

  95. Let's pray,

  96. as we come to God's word.

  97. Let's pray.

  98. Heavenly Father,

  99. we are so very conscious,

  100. of our need of your help this morning.

  101. Certainly I am.

  102. Lord,

  103. we long to listen,

  104. to what you say in your word.

  105. We don't want to come here,

  106. and just leave the same as we walked in.

  107. We want to engage with you,

  108. we want to hear from you,

  109. we want you to be at work by your spirit.

  110. And none of those things can be done,

  111. because we deserve them,

  112. or achieve them,

  113. or because of our own great skill,

  114. whatever that might be.

  115. But Lord,

  116. we need you.

  117. We need you to work by your spirit,

  118. for your glory's sake.

  119. So be at work,

  120. we ask,

  121. as your word is open.

  122. In Jesus' name.

  123. Amen.

  124. Amen.

  125. It's going to help you this morning,

  126. especially if you're here,

  127. for the very first time,

  128. to know that we have been working our way through,

  129. the New Testament book of Romans.

  130. We've been doing that,

  131. because our conviction as a church,

  132. is that the Bible is God's book.

  133. That is,

  134. we believe that it is written by people.

  135. So this was written by Paul,

  136. and you can see his fingerprints in it,

  137. his kind of use of language,

  138. and his personality come through.

  139. But behind that stands God,

  140. by his spirit,

  141. who is the author of the book.

  142. These are his words.

  143. Now,

  144. I start there,

  145. and it's worth remembering that,

  146. because we've been through Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  147. in the last few weeks.

  148. And Romans 8 is one of the most comforting passages,

  149. in the whole of the New Testament.

  150. And now we come to Romans 9,

  151. and that is one of the most challenging chapters,

  152. in the New Testament.

  153. But what I have just said about God's word,

  154. is no more or less true,

  155. of Romans 9,

  156. than it was of Romans 8.

  157. Just because you enjoy something,

  158. doesn't necessarily make it more God's word,

  159. than something that you find challenging,

  160. or difficult.

  161. And the particular challenge,

  162. I think,

  163. of Romans 9,

  164. is that it gives us,

  165. essentially,

  166. a very difficult answer,

  167. to a question,

  168. that we are all asking this morning.

  169. It's a painful question,

  170. and a difficult answer.

  171. And so I want to urge you this morning,

  172. to have your Bible open.

  173. I know I pretty much say that every week,

  174. but this week,

  175. please,

  176. have your Bible open.

  177. If it's on your phone,

  178. and you can trust yourself,

  179. not to check your emails,

  180. right?

  181. I can't do that.

  182. As soon as my phone is open,

  183. and I'm checking my emails,

  184. or something.

  185. So,

  186. if you can,

  187. if you can have it on your phone,

  188. and not do that,

  189. then do that.

  190. But if you want a physical Bible,

  191. there should be one near you,

  192. and have Romans 9.

  193. Because I want you to see,

  194. more than anything,

  195. is that,

  196. what I am saying this morning,

  197. is coming from this passage,

  198. in the Bible,

  199. and not from my head.

  200. So let's start,

  201. with a question,

  202. that we're probably not asking,

  203. right?

  204. A question,

  205. that we're probably not asking.

  206. You might,

  207. and you might not,

  208. remember that,

  209. right at the very beginning,

  210. of the letter to the Romans,

  211. Paul says,

  212. in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:16

  213. verse 16,

  214. for I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  215. because it's the power of God,

  216. that brings salvation,

  217. to everyone who believes.

  218. First for the Jew,

  219. then to the Gentile,

  220. right?

  221. And then he spent,

  222. eight chapters,

  223. if you like,

  224. articulating the gospel,

  225. the message of good news,

  226. that is the power of God,

  227. to save.

  228. And now,

  229. in chapters 9 to 11,

  230. he's returning,

  231. to the next idea,

  232. which is,

  233. well,

  234. what about the Jews first?

  235. What about the Jews first?

  236. So chapter 9,

  237. it is not,

  238. everything he's got to say,

  239. about the gospel,

  240. in the Jewish nation,

  241. but it is the start of it.

  242. And he's going to,

  243. articulate this more,

  244. in chapters 9,

  245. 10,

  246. and 11,

  247. to everyone who believes,

  248. first to the Jew,

  249. then to the Gentile.

  250. Now,

  251. his reason for returning to this,

  252. should be obvious to us,

  253. right?

  254. The church in Rome,

  255. and actually,

  256. Paul's ministry in general,

  257. has been dominated,

  258. by preaching to Gentiles,

  259. and not Jews.

  260. So he knows,

  261. like,

  262. theologically,

  263. from reading the Old Testament,

  264. and from understanding God's word,

  265. he understands,

  266. that the gospel is first,

  267. for the Jews,

  268. but in his experience,

  269. it has been the Gentiles,

  270. who've responded to the gospel,

  271. and it's them,

  272. to whom he's writing.

  273. And that brings a sadness to him,

  274. the lack of responsiveness,

  275. of the Jewish people,

  276. to the gospel.

  277. And so he says,

  278. chapter 9,

  279. verse 1,

  280. look down at it,

  281. I speak the truth in Christ.

  282. I'm not lying.

  283. My conscience confirms it,

  284. through the Holy Spirit.

  285. I have great sorrow,

  286. and unceasing anguish,

  287. in my heart.

  288. But don't miss,

  289. the layers,

  290. that he's building up here.

  291. It's like a,

  292. it's like a kind of,

  293. first century highlighter pen,

  294. before highlighter pens existed.

  295. He goes,

  296. listen,

  297. this is the truth.

  298. I affirm this is the truth.

  299. It's the truth in Christ.

  300. I'm not lying.

  301. My conscience tells me I'm not lying.

  302. The Holy Spirit tells me I'm not lying.

  303. I have great sorrow,

  304. and unceasing anguish.

  305. Listen how he continues.

  306. It gets more serious.

  307. Verse 3,

  308. Now,

  309. the word race there,

  310. is a really unhelpful translation of a Greek word.

  311. As far as I can tell,

  312. the NIV is pretty much the only translation that uses it.

  313. The word is better,

  314. sort of,

  315. kinsman,

  316. or kindred.

  317. And that's really,

  318. in one sense,

  319. because there is only one race in the Bible.

  320. That is the human race.

  321. God made us all the same in Adam and Eve.

  322. But also,

  323. it's because Paul's affinity is not with a race category,

  324. as we might understand it now.

  325. It's not really even just with a national identity,

  326. the people of Israel.

  327. Rather,

  328. it's not national pride or racism.

  329. It's really a concern of who they are in the plan of God.

  330. Verse 4 will explain it to you.

  331. He then goes on to say this,

  332. doesn't he?

  333. What belongs to the Israelites in the plan of God?

  334. Well,

  335. there is the adoption to sonship.

  336. They are called the sons of God.

  337. Theirs is the divine glory,

  338. the covenant promises of the Old Testament,

  339. the receiving of the law,

  340. the temple worship,

  341. and the promises.

  342. Theirs are the patriarchs,

  343. and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah,

  344. who is God over all,

  345. forever praised.

  346. Amen.

  347. See,

  348. the issue,

  349. it's not racism.

  350. It's not national pride.

  351. Paul is wrestling with the fact that despite the Israelites being given all of those things,

  352. still,

  353. they are hard and cold to the gospel.

  354. And Paul is heartbroken,

  355. and he wants to know why.

  356. Why?

  357. Now,

  358. I said at the start,

  359. that's probably a question that you're not asking,

  360. right?

  361. I think it's probably,

  362. we are so used,

  363. I think,

  364. to Jews not believing in Jesus,

  365. that we don't feel the strangeness of it in the way that Paul does here.

  366. But I hope you can see that it leads to a question that you are asking this morning.

  367. It's a question we're all asking.

  368. And that is,

  369. why are some people saved,

  370. and others not?

  371. Why is the gospel,

  372. the power of God for salvation,

  373. for some,

  374. and not for all?

  375. You know,

  376. we share Paul's pain,

  377. don't we,

  378. for his kinsmen,

  379. when we,

  380. we think about the people that we love,

  381. who don't believe the gospel.

  382. But we,

  383. we wonder,

  384. or maybe even sitting here this morning,

  385. wondering,

  386. why are some members of my family in this room with me,

  387. and others not?

  388. Why is it that some people,

  389. walking off the street,

  390. come to faith in Jesus Christ,

  391. almost straight away,

  392. and others hear about Jesus all their lives.

  393. They go to Sunday school,

  394. they go to church,

  395. they go to youth group,

  396. and they never respond.

  397. And we can feel about the question,

  398. just like Paul does in verse three,

  399. wishing even that we might swap places with our loved ones,

  400. our friends,

  401. and our family who don't know the Lord.

  402. Wishing that if it was possible,

  403. that we would be cut off,

  404. that they might be included in him.

  405. Paul knows,

  406. and we know it doesn't work like that.

  407. But still the question hangs.

  408. Why has being around the church

  409. been of so little eternal benefit to so many?

  410. Why have so many people seen the glory of God?

  411. They might even have sort of sensed it

  412. in a room like this,

  413. but now they've walked away.

  414. They have no interest.

  415. Why are there people who know their Bibles,

  416. but still don't believe it?

  417. Why are there people who are Christian in name,

  418. but not really in practice?

  419. That's the bigger question,

  420. isn't it,

  421. that Paul raises

  422. and is dealing with

  423. in these chapters to come.

  424. And so then the rest of chapter nine

  425. is really a difficult answer

  426. that we won't fully understand.

  427. It's not really a great headline,

  428. is it,

  429. for the next section of my sermon,

  430. but let's pick this up in verse six

  431. and let me show you

  432. that this is a difficult answer

  433. and we won't fully understand it.

  434. But we're going to walk through these verses

  435. and see how Paul deals with the question.

  436. Again,

  437. eyes on the Bible.

  438. This is God in his word.

  439. This is not Steve's ideas,

  440. right?

  441. This is what God says.

  442. Firstly,

  443. notice he says,

  444. it has always been like this,

  445. right?

  446. Step one,

  447. always been like this.

  448. If you look at verse six,

  449. he says that right from the very start,

  450. not every ethnic Israelite

  451. was a child of the promise.

  452. He says,

  453. there's always been a distinction,

  454. which this means cannot be a failure

  455. of God's word

  456. because God's word has never

  457. meant that every single individual Israelite

  458. without exception would be saved.

  459. The selective salvation is,

  460. if you like,

  461. a feature of the covenant,

  462. not a bug in it.

  463. So of Abraham's children,

  464. verse seven,

  465. it was only the son of Sarah,

  466. Isaac,

  467. verse nine,

  468. that was of the promise.

  469. Then of Isaac's children

  470. from his wife,

  471. Rebecca,

  472. the twins,

  473. Esau and Jacob,

  474. only,

  475. verse 12,

  476. Jacob,

  477. who surprisingly is the younger,

  478. not Esau the older,

  479. he is saved.

  480. So this distinction is,

  481. that's causing Paul such pain

  482. in chapter nine,

  483. verse one,

  484. which causes us pain

  485. as we see it in our families,

  486. in our community,

  487. this distinction between those who are saved

  488. and those who are lost,

  489. that distinction,

  490. says Paul,

  491. has always been there

  492. from the very beginning of the Bible.

  493. And it doesn't matter who your parents are.

  494. It doesn't matter how close

  495. your connection with the promises

  496. were,

  497. it doesn't matter how much

  498. you knew of the Bible.

  499. You know,

  500. Ishmael was Abraham's son.

  501. Esau was Isaac's son.

  502. But both were lost.

  503. Perhaps you could put it this way,

  504. God has never in the Bible

  505. been what you might call

  506. a universalist.

  507. In other words,

  508. God has never saved everyone

  509. without exception.

  510. There has always been

  511. inclusion and exclusion

  512. from the promises of God.

  513. If you're here this morning

  514. and your expectation is,

  515. do you know what?

  516. Probably in the end,

  517. God will save everybody.

  518. It will be all right.

  519. God will just save everybody

  520. in the end.

  521. Hell is probably an empty place.

  522. You know,

  523. like the sort of hollow threats

  524. of parents.

  525. It's probably what God's like.

  526. Listen,

  527. that is not the God of the Bible.

  528. That is not the God of the Bible.

  529. The Bible is littered

  530. with people who hear

  531. and never believe

  532. and are lost as a result.

  533. People who have access

  534. to the eternal promises of God

  535. but never benefit from them.

  536. Look down at verse 27.

  537. Paul is picking up that idea

  538. from Isaiah.

  539. Though the number of Israelites

  540. be like the sand by the sea,

  541. only a remnant,

  542. a part will be saved.

  543. That's step one.

  544. It's always been like this.

  545. Second step,

  546. step two,

  547. God chooses those he saves

  548. and those he doesn't.

  549. Look at verse 11,

  550. talking about Rebecca's twin boys.

  551. Yet before the twins were born,

  552. all had done anything good or bad

  553. in order that God's purpose

  554. in election might stand,

  555. not by works,

  556. but by him who calls,

  557. she was told,

  558. the older will serve the younger.

  559. Just as it is written,

  560. Jacob I loved,

  561. but Esau I hated.

  562. Here it is then,

  563. outside of anything

  564. that Esau or Jacob did,

  565. before they had done

  566. anything good or bad,

  567. because they'd not yet been born,

  568. right?

  569. God declared that Jacob

  570. would go ahead of Esau,

  571. that Jacob would be loved

  572. and saved,

  573. and Esau would be hated

  574. and lost.

  575. This is God's purpose

  576. in election,

  577. as Paul puts it.

  578. Literally,

  579. this is God's say-so.

  580. Salvation belongs to him.

  581. And it's not that God

  582. sort of foresaw

  583. that Jacob would do some good,

  584. you know,

  585. some salvation-deserving stuff.

  586. So outside of time,

  587. God decides,

  588. I'm going to save Jacob

  589. because he's a kind of

  590. salvation-deserving

  591. kind of person,

  592. and I'm not going to save Esau.

  593. No, it says before,

  594. doesn't it?

  595. Before anything

  596. that they'd done.

  597. And not just in,

  598. not just before

  599. kind of chronologically,

  600. but before logically

  601. as well,

  602. outside of,

  603. disconnected from

  604. anything good or bad

  605. done by Jacob or Esau,

  606. God chose to save Jacob

  607. and not to save Esau.

  608. Now, I know these are

  609. difficult things, right?

  610. It's why I want you

  611. to keep looking at your Bible.

  612. It's worth pointing out to you

  613. that Romans 9

  614. is not out on a limb

  615. in Bible terms, is it?

  616. Paul himself

  617. is just expounding

  618. the Old Testament for you.

  619. Paul didn't write,

  620. Jacob I loved,

  621. Esau I hated.

  622. God said that to Malachi

  623. and he wrote it down.

  624. Paul didn't write

  625. the story of the Exodus

  626. where consistently

  627. we're told that God

  628. hardens Pharaoh's heart

  629. so that he will not

  630. let the people go.

  631. What Paul says

  632. is also just in line

  633. with what Jesus says.

  634. In John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  635. Jesus says,

  636. all those that the Father

  637. gives to me

  638. will come to me.

  639. Notice what he says.

  640. Jesus doesn't say

  641. all those who decide

  642. to come

  643. the Father will give.

  644. He doesn't say that.

  645. Rather he says

  646. all those the Father gives

  647. those are the ones

  648. that will come to me

  649. he says.

  650. Jesus said of his disciples

  651. in John 13

  652. that he knew

  653. those he had chosen

  654. before adding

  655. that Judas

  656. would betray him

  657. because despite

  658. being around him

  659. and dipping his bread

  660. with him

  661. still he was not

  662. chosen

  663. as one of

  664. Jesus' people.

  665. The other apostles

  666. also carry on

  667. that teaching

  668. say the apostle Peter

  669. in 1 Peter 2

  670. calls the church

  671. a chosen people

  672. a royal priesthood

  673. and the person

  674. they're doing

  675. the choosing

  676. is not us.

  677. It's not that

  678. we have chosen

  679. to be God's people

  680. rather that God

  681. has chosen us

  682. to be his people.

  683. Paul is just

  684. echoing that Bible

  685. theme from the beginning

  686. to the end

  687. that we looked at

  688. with the children.

  689. Salvation belongs

  690. to our God.

  691. in verse 16

  692. he underlines

  693. the implication

  694. of it all.

  695. Verse 16

  696. so

  697. it does not

  698. therefore depend

  699. on human desire

  700. or effort

  701. but on

  702. God's

  703. mercy.

  704. In other words

  705. it's not that

  706. good people

  707. or hard working

  708. people

  709. or people

  710. who do the right

  711. thing are saved

  712. and others lost

  713. rather it's about

  714. God's mercy

  715. and not human effort.

  716. People are saved

  717. because of something

  718. that is true

  719. about God

  720. not something

  721. that's true

  722. about them

  723. or me

  724. or you.

  725. Now

  726. it's worth knowing

  727. that this is not

  728. the only thing

  729. that Paul says

  730. about those

  731. who are saved.

  732. Over the page

  733. in chapter 10

  734. he will tell people

  735. that they need to hear

  736. about Jesus

  737. and believe in him.

  738. In chapter 10

  739. which we're going to

  740. look at next week

  741. he says that

  742. everyone who calls

  743. on the name of the Lord

  744. will be saved.

  745. He then says

  746. in chapter 11

  747. that large numbers

  748. of Jewish people

  749. will be saved

  750. as Gentiles

  751. hold out the gospel

  752. to them.

  753. But he starts

  754. not in contradiction

  755. to any of that

  756. but rather to go ahead

  757. of all of that

  758. he starts here

  759. saying listen

  760. first

  761. you must understand

  762. this is about

  763. God's mercy

  764. not about anything else.

  765. And he reminds us

  766. verse 15

  767. and verse 18

  768. repeat exactly

  769. the same line.

  770. He has mercy

  771. on whom he

  772. wants to have mercy

  773. and he hardens

  774. whom he

  775. wants to harden.

  776. Now that's not

  777. because people

  778. go to him

  779. looking for mercy

  780. and some are

  781. turned away

  782. but knowing

  783. that people

  784. who come to him

  785. for mercy

  786. are those

  787. who have been

  788. mercifully called

  789. by God himself.

  790. So here we are

  791. so far

  792. this is the

  793. difficult answer

  794. to the painful

  795. question.

  796. Number one

  797. belief and unbelief

  798. has always been a thing

  799. it's always been like this.

  800. Step two

  801. behind all that

  802. stands the sovereign

  803. plan of God

  804. who chooses

  805. to show mercy

  806. to whom he wills.

  807. He chooses

  808. to save those

  809. he wants

  810. and those

  811. he doesn't.

  812. There's another

  813. step to make

  814. because in verse 19

  815. Paul anticipates

  816. the obvious objection

  817. look down at verse 19

  818. one of you

  819. will say to me

  820. then why does

  821. God still blame us

  822. for who is able

  823. to resist his will?

  824. This is surely

  825. what any thinking

  826. person

  827. who is tracking

  828. Paul's argument

  829. is asking now

  830. right?

  831. Wait Paul

  832. if you are saying

  833. that behind

  834. belief and unbelief

  835. ultimately lies

  836. the sovereign

  837. choice of God

  838. in showing

  839. mercy and hardening

  840. how can anybody

  841. then be held

  842. responsible for

  843. unbelief?

  844. If the reason

  845. that they don't

  846. believe the gospel

  847. is ultimately

  848. because God

  849. made them

  850. not believe

  851. then surely

  852. it's not their fault.

  853. Listen this is

  854. so important

  855. right?

  856. If you are not

  857. at this point

  858. asking this question

  859. two things are possible

  860. right?

  861. One you've zoned out

  862. and you're checking

  863. your emails on your phone

  864. like I said you might be

  865. at the beginning

  866. in which case

  867. come back

  868. or two is you just

  869. not really understood

  870. what's been said

  871. because if you are

  872. thinking

  873. and knowing

  874. what Paul has said

  875. this is the important

  876. question isn't it?

  877. How can God

  878. be sovereign

  879. over belief

  880. and unbelief

  881. and people

  882. still yet

  883. be held

  884. responsible

  885. for their actions

  886. whether they

  887. believe or not?

  888. These two things

  889. seem to us

  890. to be a contradiction

  891. to one another.

  892. How can they

  893. both be true?

  894. Either surely

  895. God does choose

  896. and people are

  897. therefore not

  898. responsible

  899. or people are

  900. responsible

  901. and God does

  902. not choose

  903. but surely

  904. these two things

  905. cannot be true

  906. at the same time.

  907. Which one

  908. is it going to be?

  909. Well look down

  910. at verse 20

  911. because Paul gives you

  912. the answer

  913. you're not going

  914. to like it

  915. but this is the answer.

  916. Who are you?

  917. A human being

  918. to talk back to God.

  919. Shall what is formed

  920. say to the one

  921. who formed it

  922. why did you make me

  923. like this?

  924. Does not the potter

  925. have the right

  926. to make out

  927. of the same lump

  928. of clay

  929. some pottery

  930. for special purposes

  931. and some for common use?

  932. This is the mind

  933. blowing answer.

  934. The mind blowing

  935. answer is listen

  936. that is the obvious

  937. question you're right.

  938. but you cannot

  939. tell God

  940. what he is

  941. and isn't allowed

  942. to do.

  943. You cannot

  944. say to God

  945. you are not

  946. allowed to retain

  947. your sovereignty

  948. in a world

  949. of human freedom.

  950. In other words

  951. while human freedom

  952. and responsibility

  953. are true

  954. and we'll see

  955. more of that

  956. next week

  957. still they are

  958. not true

  959. in a way

  960. that compromises

  961. God's freedom.

  962. God

  963. God

  964. is

  965. free.

  966. That's the answer

  967. isn't it?

  968. And you are not

  969. allowed to tell him

  970. that he is not

  971. free.

  972. And more than that

  973. we need to be

  974. careful don't we?

  975. Because you and I

  976. are not in a position

  977. to lecture God

  978. about what he is

  979. or isn't allowed

  980. to do.

  981. He is the potter

  982. and we are the clay.

  983. In this world

  984. the world

  985. that God

  986. has made

  987. the world

  988. that God

  989. will hold

  990. to account

  991. the lives

  992. that he has

  993. given us

  994. which we will

  995. one day

  996. stand before him

  997. he is the one

  998. who is allowed

  999. to dictate the terms

  1000. not you or I.

  1001. Because in this world

  1002. it's not just

  1003. human freedom

  1004. that matters

  1005. but it's divine

  1006. freedom

  1007. because step three

  1008. is God

  1009. is free

  1010. to do

  1011. as he wills.

  1012. God must be free.

  1013. Now we need

  1014. to be careful here

  1015. because there is

  1016. more to notice

  1017. in these verses.

1018. I want you to see

  1019. I don't think

  1020. verse 20

  1021. is meant to be

  1022. angry

  1023. or confrontational.

  1024. Paul is not

  1025. waving a stick

  1026. at you

  1027. saying

  1028. how dare

  1029. you ask

  1030. that question.

  1031. That's not

  1032. the tone here.

  1033. His point

  1034. is not that

  1035. asking the question

  1036. is necessarily

  1037. rude and objectionable.

  1038. Rather his point

  1039. is something like this.

  1040. When it comes

  1041. to the issue

  1042. of divine sovereignty

  1043. and human responsibility

  1044. the idea

  1045. that God

  1046. chooses those

  1047. whom he will save

  1048. and everyone

  1049. who calls

  1050. on the name

  1051. of the Lord

  1052. will be saved.

  1053. When it comes

  1054. to understanding

  1055. how those two

  1056. things hold together

  1057. the question is

  1058. who do you think

  1059. you are

  1060. as a mere

  1061. human being

  1062. to expect

  1063. to understand

  1064. that?

  1065. Do you think

  1066. you can understand

  1067. God?

  1068. Do you?

  1069. Do you think

  1070. that you can ask

  1071. God

  1072. listen God

  1073. tell me

  1074. because this is

  1075. a trouble to me.

  1076. Listen

  1077. you must

  1078. explain to me

  1079. God

  1080. please

  1081. because I

  1082. don't understand

  1083. you must

  1084. explain to me

  1085. how it can be

  1086. true that you

  1087. are sovereign

  1088. and still

  1089. hold people

  1090. responsible.

  1091. Do you expect

  1092. God

  1093. to explain

  1094. that to you

  1095. in a way

  1096. that you

  1097. can understand?

  1098. Do you?

  1099. Of course

  1100. he couldn't.

  1101. Not because

  1102. God doesn't

  1103. know

  1104. but because

  1105. he doesn't

  1106. have to

  1107. explain it

  1108. but even

  1109. if he did

  1110. you wouldn't

  1111. understand it.

  1112. Now I realise

  1113. that's probably

  1114. not the answer

  1115. that you were

  1116. maybe looking for.

  1117. You're perhaps

  1118. hoping for more

  1119. that maybe

  1120. Paul might

  1121. land an answer

  1122. that would

  1123. end the debate

  1124. that's rumbled

  1125. on in churches

  1126. for centuries.

  1127. Churches are

  1128. full of

  1129. churches that

  1130. emphasise God's

  1131. sovereignty

  1132. at the expense

  1133. of human

  1134. responsibility

  1135. and you have

  1136. other churches

  1137. which are all

  1138. about human

  1139. responsibility

  1140. and swerve

  1141. away from the

  1142. idea that the

  1143. Lord is sovereign

  1144. but Paul says

  1145. no you need

  1146. to live in the

  1147. tension because

  1148. both are true

  1149. but you cannot

  1150. understand them

  1151. because you're

  1152. a mere human

  1153. being

  1154. I'm a mere

  1155. human being.

  1156. There's one

  1157. last step

  1158. let's rehearse

  1159. the steps

  1160. right?

  1161. Belief and

  1162. unbelief has

  1163. always been a

  1164. thing.

  1165. God chooses

  1166. those he

  1167. says and

  1168. those he

  1169. doesn't

  1170. and then

  1171. next God

  1172. is free

  1173. to do

  1174. as he

  1175. wills

  1176. but there

  1177. is a

  1178. fourth

  1179. step

  1180. God does

  1181. all this

  1182. so that

  1183. God will

  1184. be seen

  1185. as glorious.

  1186. This is

  1187. where this

  1188. section ends

  1189. verse 22

  1190. look down

  1191. at it

  1192. what if

  1193. God

  1194. this is

  1195. Paul's

  1196. suggestion

  1197. and answer

  1198. what if

  1199. God

  1200. although

  1201. choosing

  1202. to show

  1203. his wrath

  1204. and make

  1205. his power

  1206. known

  1207. or with

  1208. great

  1209. patience

  1210. the objects

  1211. of his

  1212. wrath

  1213. prepared

  1214. for destruction

  1215. what if

  1216. he did

  1217. this to

  1218. make the

  1219. riches

  1220. of his

  1221. glory

  1222. known

  1223. to the

  1224. objects

  1225. of his

  1226. mercy

  1227. whom he

  1228. prepared

  1229. in advance

  1230. for glory

  1231. even us

  1232. whom he

  1233. also called

  1234. not only

  1235. from the

  1236. Jews

  1237. but also

  1238. from the

  1239. Gentiles

  1240. here

  1241. Paul's

  1242. point

  1243. now

  1244. is

  1245. essentially

  1246. to move

  1247. on

  1248. and to

  1249. say

  1250. what is

  1251. true

  1252. of a

  1253. God

  1254. like

  1255. this

  1256. what am

  1257. I to

  1258. think

  1259. of a

  1260. God

  1261. who

  1262. saves

  1263. and holds

  1264. to

  1265. account

  1266. what is

  1267. true

  1268. if

  1269. God

  1270. sovereignly

  1271. raises

  1272. up those

  1273. who will

  1274. experience

  1275. mercy

  1276. and

  1277. sovereignly

  1278. raises

  1279. up those

  1280. who will

  1281. experience

  1282. his

  1283. judgment

  1284. what is

  1285. true

  1286. of a

  1287. God

  1288. who is

  1289. able

  1290. to do

  1291. all of

  1292. that

  1293. that

  1294. God

  1295. is

  1296. glorious

  1297. says

  1298. Paul

  1299. and

  1300. notice

  1301. how

  1302. he's

  1303. glorious

  1304. verse

  1305. 23

  1306. by

  1307. making

  1308. known

  1309. his

  1310. glory

  1311. to

  1312. those

  1313. prepared

  1314. in

  1315. advance

  1316. for

  1317. his

  1318. glory

  1319. I'm

  1320. going to

  1321. slow down

  1322. here

  1323. so that

  1324. we get

  1325. this

  1326. look at

  1327. verse

  1328. 22

  1329. again

  1330. notice

  1331. that

  1332. God's

  1333. decision

  1334. to

  1335. allow

  1336. unbelief

  1337. to

  1338. persist

  1339. in

  1340. his

  1341. world

  1342. his

  1343. patience

  1344. with

  1345. the

  1346. objects

  1347. of

  1348. his

  1349. wrath

  1350. or

  1351. his

  1352. judgment

  1353. is

  1354. his

  1355. patience

  1356. there

  1357. is

  1358. for

  1359. the

  1360. purpose

  1361. of

  1362. showing

  1363. glory

  1364. to

  1365. those

  1366. who

  1367. will

  1368. be

  1369. saved

  1370. this

  1371. is

  1372. so

  1373. important

  1374. okay

  1375. God

  1376. allows

  1377. unbelief

  1378. to persist

  1379. in his

  1380. world

  1381. not because

  1382. he is

  1383. weak

  1384. not because

  1385. he's

  1386. not in

  1387. control

  1388. of it

  1389. but so

  1390. that

  1391. he

  1392. might

  1393. save

  1394. and

  1395. that

  1396. those

  1397. he

  1398. saves

  1399. might

  1400. know

  1401. what

  1402. it

  1403. is

  1404. they've

  1405. been

  1406. saved

  1407. from

  1408. the

  1409. order

  1410. there

  1411. is

  1412. the

  1413. important

  1414. thing

  1415. God

  1416. doesn't

  1417. allow

  1418. mercy

  1419. to

  1420. exist

  1421. in

  1422. order

  1423. for

  1424. him

  1425. to

  1426. provide

  1427. an

  1428. opportunity

  1429. for

  1430. judgment

  1431. instead

  1432. he

  1433. provides

  1434. patience

  1435. in

  1436. judgment

  1437. in

  1438. order

  1439. to

  1440. prioritize

  1441. mercy

  1442. use

  1443. Paul's

  1444. example

  1445. of

  1446. Pharaoh

  1447. right

  1448. God

  1449. did

  1450. not

  1451. save

  1452. the

  1453. Israelites

  1454. from

  1455. Egypt

  1456. so

  1457. that

  1458. he

  1459. could

  1460. judge

  1461. Pharaoh

  1462. rather

  1463. he

  1464. patiently

  1465. waited

  1466. to

  1467. punish

  1468. Pharaoh

  1469. so

  1470. that

  1471. he

  1472. might

  1473. save

  1474. Israel

  1475. salvation

  1476. was

  1477. and

  1478. is

  1479. God's

  1480. priority

  1481. not

  1482. judgment

  1483. and

  1484. the

  1485. Israelites

  1486. will

  1487. look

  1488. over

  1489. the

  1490. bodies

  1491. of

  1492. the

  1493. Egyptians

  1494. bobbing

  1495. up and

  1496. down

  1497. in

  1498. the

  1499. Red

  1500. Sea

  1501. and

  1502. they

  1503. are

  1504. to

  1505. think

  1506. that

  1507. should

  1508. have

  1509. been

  1510. me

  1511. but

  1512. God

  1513. showed

  1514. me

  1515. mercy

  1516. Jesus

  1517. tells

  1518. a

  1519. parable

  1520. in

  1521. Matthew

  1522. 13

  1523. of

  1524. weeds

  1525. and

  1526. wheat

  1527. where

  1528. the

  1529. kingdom

  1530. of

  1531. God

  1532. is

  1533. compared

  1534. to

  1535. a

  1536. field

  1537. that

  1538. has

  1539. been

  1540. planted

  1541. with

  1542. wheat

  1543. and

  1544. then

  1545. someone

  1546. an

  1547. enemy

  1548. goes

  1549. and

  1550. plants

  1551. weeds

  1552. in

  1553. the

  1554. field

  1555. and

  1556. the

  1557. servants

  1558. say

  1559. shall

  1560. we

  1561. pull

  1562. up

  1563. the

  1564. weeds

  1565. and

  1566. the

  1567. farmer

  1568. says

  1569. no

  1570. don't

  1571. do

  1572. that

  1573. because

  1574. you

  1575. might

  1576. pull

  1577. up

  1578. the

  1579. wheat

  1580. with

  1581. the

  1582. weeds

  1583. by

  1584. accident

  1585. and

  1586. we

  1587. really

  1588. don't

  1589. want

  1590. that

  1591. because

  1592. what

  1593. we're

  1594. really

  1595. about

  1596. is

  1597. harvest

  1598. harvesting

  1599. wheat

  1600. no

  1601. instead

  1602. wait

  1603. until

  1604. the

  1605. harvest

  1606. and

  1607. then

  1608. we'll

  1609. separate

  1610. them

  1611. and

  1612. we'll

  1613. bundle

  1614. the

  1615. weeds

  1616. to

  1617. burn

  1618. and

  1619. the

  1620. wheat

  1621. to

  1622. go

  1623. in

  1624. the

  1625. barn

  1626. and

  1627. so

  1628. it

  1629. is

  1630. here

  1631. God's

  1632. sovereignty

  1633. over

  1634. belief

  1635. and

  1636. unbelief

  1637. means

  1638. that

  1639. he

  1640. can

  1641. patiently

  1642. wait

  1643. to

  1644. show

  1645. mercy

  1646. prioritizing

  1647. showing

  1648. his glory

  1649. in

  1650. saving

  1651. his people

  1652. even

  1653. to us

  1654. who don't

  1655. belong

  1656. the old

  1657. testament

  1658. promises

  1659. because we

  1660. were never

  1661. part of

  1662. the jewish

  1663. nation

  1664. we are

  1665. the

  1666. gentiles

  1667. and so

  1668. we can

  1669. say

  1670. can't

  1671. we

  1672. that

  1673. because

  1674. of

  1675. God's

  1676. great

  1677. patience

  1678. he

  1679. has

  1680. time

  1681. to

  1682. include

  1683. even

  1684. us

  1685. so

  1686. as

  1687. verse

  1688. 25

  1689. puts

  1690. it

  1691. as

  1692. he

  1693. says

  1694. in

  1695. Hosea

  1696. I

  1697. will

  1698. call

  1699. them

  1700. my

  1701. people

  1702. who

  1703. are

  1704. not

  1705. my

  1706. people

  1707. and

  1708. I

  1709. will

  1710. call

  1711. her

  1712. my

  1713. loved

  1714. one

  1715. who

  1716. is

  1717. not

  1718. my

  1719. loved

  1720. one

  1721. and

  1722. in

  1723. the

  1724. very

  1725. place

  1726. where

  1727. it

  1728. said

  1729. to

  1730. them

  1731. you

  1732. are

  1733. not

  1734. my

  1735. people

  1736. there

  1737. they

  1738. will

  1739. be

  1740. called

  1741. children

  1742. of

  1743. the

  1744. living

  1745. God

  1746. it's

  1747. you

  1748. and

  1749. me

  1750. you

  1751. !

  1752. you're

  1753. a

  1754. Christian

  1755. this

  1756. morning

  1757. let me

  1758. just ask

  1759. as we

  1760. close

  1761. what are

  1762. we

  1763. to do

  1764. with

  1765. all

  1766. of

  1767. this

  1768. we

  1769. are

  1770. surrounded

  1771. aren't

  1772. we

  1773. like

  1774. Paul

  1775. by

  1776. the

  1777. heartbreaking

  1778. !

  1779. reality

  1780. of

  1781. unbelief

  1782. people

  1783. that we

  1784. love

  1785. care

  1786. about

  1787. deeply

  1788. see

  1789. no

  1790. need

  1791. to

  1792. trust

  1793. in

  1794. the

  1795. Lord

  1796. Jesus

  1797. Christ

  1798. or

  1799. follow

  1800. him

  1801. or

  1802. turn

  1803. from

  1804. their

  1805. sin

  1806. it's

  1807. not

  1808. ignorance

  1809. they

  1810. know

  1811. their

  1812. Bibles

  1813. they've

  1814. attended

  1815. church

  1816. we've

  1817. shared

  1818. the

  1819. gospel

  1820. with

  1821. them

  1822. they

  1823. just

  1824. don't

  1825. think

  1826. it's

  1827. important

  1828. they

  1829. just

  1830. don't

  1831. care

  1832. and

  1833. yet

  1834. we

  1835. know

  1836. because

  1837. the

  1838. Bible

  1839. is

  1840. so

  1841. clear

  1842. that

  1843. judgment

  1844. stands

  1845. before

  1846. us

  1847. all

  1848. what

  1849. are

  1850. we

  1851. to

  1852. think

  1853. what

  1854. are

  1855. we

  1856. to

  1857. do

  1858. well

  1859. we

  1860. are

  1861. to

  1862. see

  1863. that

  1864. while

  1865. we

  1866. don't

  1867. really

  1868. understand

  1869. God

  1870. is

  1871. still

  1872. in

  1873. charge

  1874. and

  1875. God

  1876. knows

  1877. what

  1878. he's

  1879. doing

  1880. even

  1881. if

  1882. we

  1883. don't

  1884. know

  1885. and

  1886. yes

  1887. we

  1888. know

  1889. because

  1890. we

  1891. kind

  1892. of

  1893. come

  1894. to

  1895. chapter

  1896. 10

  1897. we

  1898. should

  1899. keep

  1900. sharing

  1901. the

  1902. gospel

  1903. people

  1904. don't

  1905. carry

  1906. labels

  1907. do

  1908. they

  1909. we

  1910. don't

  1911. know

  1912. who

  1913. God

  1914. has

  1915. chosen

  1916. only

  1917. God

  1918. knows

  1919. that

  1920. and

  1921. so

  1922. we

  1923. share

  1924. the

  1925. gospel

  1926. but

  1927. we

  1928. also

  1929. pray

  1930. why

  1931. pray

  1932. why

  1933. do

  1934. you

  1935. pray

  1936. for

  1937. your

  1938. friends

  1939. and

  1940. family

  1941. who

  1942. don't

  1943. know

  1944. the

  1945. Lord

  1946. to

  1947. come

  1948. and

  1949. trust

  1950. in

  1951. him

  1952. you

  1953. pray

  1954. because

  1955. you

  1956. know

  1957. that

  1958. salvation

  1959. belongs

  1960. to

  1961. God

  1962. and

  1963. that

  1964. he

  1965. has

  1966. the

  1967. power

  1968. to

  1969. save

  1970. that's

  1971. what

  1972. Romans

  1973. 9

  1974. has

  1975. been

  1976. telling

  1977. you

  1978. but

  1979. let

  1980. me

  1981. just

  1982. finish

  1983. with

  1984. a

  1985. plea

  1986. if

  1987. I

  1988. can

  1989. perhaps

  1990. you're

  1991. here

  1992. this

  1993. morning

  1994. and

  1995. you're

  1996. not

  1997. a

  1998. Christian

  1999. I'm

  2000. so

  2001. glad

  2002. you're

  2003. here

  2004. with

  2005. us

  2006. this

  2007. morning

  2008. maybe

  2009. you've

  2010. thought

  2011. wow

  2012. this

  2013. is

  2014. a bit

  2015. heavier

  2016. than

  2017. I

  2018. thought

  2019. church

  2020. would

  2021. be

  2022. but

  2023. let

  2024. me

  2025. say

  2026. it's

  2027. really

  2028. good

  2029. you're

  2030. here

  2031. I

  2032. wonder

  2033. that

  2034. perhaps

  2035. you

  2036. thought

  2037. when

  2038. you

  2039. came

  2040. into

  2041. I'd

  2042. really

  2043. love

  2044. you

  2045. to

  2046. find

  2047. out

  2048. more

  2049. about

  2050. this

  2051. Christian

  2052. thing

  2053. come

  2054. along

  2055. to

  2056. church

  2057. it'd

  2058. be

  2059. great

  2060. that's

  2061. a

  2062. really

  2063. good

  2064. way

  2065. of

  2066. finding

  2067. out

  2068. more

  2069. and

  2070. then

  2071. you've

  2072. listened

  2073. to

  2074. Romans

  2075. 9

  2076. you

  2077. thought

  2078. oh

  2079. my

  2080. goodness

  2081. well

  2082. what

  2083. if

  2084. God

  2085. hasn't

  2086. chosen

  2087. me

  2088. what

  2089. was

  2090. the

  2091. point

  2092. of

  2093. me

  2094. investigating

  2095. Christianity

  2096. if

  2097. God

  2098. hasn't

  2099. chosen

  2100. me

  2101. why

  2102. am

  2103. I

  2104. even

  2105. here

  2106. well

  2107. let

  2108. me

  2109. say

  2110. to

  2111. you

  2112. if

  2113. there

  2114. is

  2115. a

  2116. desire

  2117. from

  2118. you

  2119. to

  2120. know

  2121. God

  2122. and

  2123. to

  2124. seek

  2125. after

  2126. him

  2127. if

  2128. you

  2129. find

  2130. in

  2131. your

  2132. heart

  2133. that

  2134. there

  2135. is

  2136. a

  2137. desire

  2138. to

  2139. turn

  2140. from

  2141. your

  2142. sin

  2143. and

  2144. to

  2145. live

  2146. for

  2147. him

  2148. a

  2149. desire

  2150. to

  2151. hear

  2152. his

  2153. word

  2154. and

  2155. follow

  2156. Jesus

  2157. what

  2158. you

  2159. really

  2160. must

  2161. understand

  2162. and

  2163. it's

  2164. really

  2165. good

  2166. that

  2167. you're

  2168. here

  2169. because

  2170. you

  2171. need

  2172. to

  2173. know

  2174. this

  2175. right

  2176. at

  2177. the

  2178. very

  2179. beginning

  2180. you

  2181. need

  2182. to

  2183. understand

  2184. you

  2185. have

  2186. that

  2187. desire

  2188. not

  2189. because

  2190. you're

  2191. a

  2192. good

  2193. person

  2194. not

  2195. because

  2196. you've

  2197. thought

  2198. it

  2199. out

  2200. but

  2201. because

  2202. God

  2203. has

  2204. put

  2205. it

  2206. there

  2207. that's

  2208. why

  2209. that

  2210. thought

  2211. is

  2212. there

  2213. what

  2214. is

  2215. happening

  2216. this

  2217. morning

  2218. you

  2219. thought

  2220. you

  2221. were

  2222. coming

  2223. to

  2224. investigate

  2225. Christianity

  2226. right

  2227. actually

  2228. what is

  2229. happening

  2230. as you

  2231. feel like

  2232. that

  2233. in your

  2234. heart

  2235. is

  2236. God

  2237. is

  2238. calling

  2239. you

  2240. that's

  2241. what's

  2242. happening

  2243. you know

  2244. in this

  2245. world

  2246. that God

  2247. has

  2248. made

  2249. that

  2250. he

  2251. rules

  2252. sovereignly

  2253. with all

  2254. his

  2255. power

  2256. and

  2257. his

  2258. might

  2259. you

  2260. don't

  2261. look

  2262. for

  2263. him

  2264. he

  2265. looks

  2266. for

  2267. you

  2268. and

  2269. he

  2270. calls

  2271. you

  2272. by

  2273. name

  2274. and

  2275. he

  2276. says

  2277. come

  2278. follow

  2279. me

  2280. you're

  2281. mine

  2282. from

  2283. before

  2284. the

  2285. foundation

  2286. of

  2287. the

  2288. world

  2289. I

  2290. knew

  2291. you

  2292. and

  2293. I

  2294. loved

  2295. you

  2296. that

  2297. desire

  2298. you

  2299. have

  2300. in

  2301. your

  2302. heart

  2303. to

  2304. know

  2305. me

  2306. to

  2307. trust

  2308. me

  2309. to

  2310. turn

  2311. from

  2312. your

  2313. sin

  2314. I

  2315. put

  2316. it

  2317. there

  2318. that

  2319. you

  2320. might

  2321. come

  2322. and

  2323. follow

  2324. me

  2325. so let

  2326. me

  2327. say

  2328. to

  2329. you

  2330. this

  2331. morning

  2332. if

  2333. you're

  2334. not

  2335. a

  2336. Christian

  2337. and

  2338. you

  2339. know

  2340. in

  2341. your

  2342. heart

  2343. that

  2344. God

  2345. is

  2346. calling

  2347. you

  2348. to

  2349. follow

  2350. him

  2351. please

  2352. don't

  2353. resist

  2354. in

  2355. fact

  2356. it

  2357. is

  2358. impossible

  2359. to

  2360. resist

  2361. that

  2362. because

  2363. salvation

  2364. belongs

  2365. to

  2366. God

  2367. let's

  2368. pray

  2369. maybe

  2370. just

  2371. take

  2372. a

  2373. few

  2374. minutes

  2375. of

  2376. quiet

  2377. to

  2378. pray

  2379. we've

  2380. dealt

  2381. with

  2382. some

  2383. heavy

  2384. things

  2385. let's

  2386. take

  2387. a

  2388. moment

  2389. just

  2390. to

  2391. seek

  2392. the

  2393. Lord

  2394. and

  2395. to

  2396. pray

  2397. in

  2398. our

  2399. hearts

  2400. heavenly

  2401. father

  2402. we

  2403. find

  2404. passages

  2405. like

  2406. this

  2407. in

  2408. the

  2409. bible

  2410. to

  2411. be

  2412. deeply

  2413. humbling

  2414. we

  2415. maybe

  2416. perhaps

  2417. thought

  2418. that

  2419. we're

  2420. Christians

  2421. because

  2422. we

  2423. worked

  2424. something

  2425. out

  2426. or

  2427. we're

  2428. better

  2429. than

  2430. other

  2431. people

  2432. but

  2433. we

  2434. find

  2435. here

  2436. that

  2437. we're

  2438. Christians

  2439. that

  2440. we

  2441. believe

  2442. and

  2443. trust

  2444. in

  2445. you

  2446. because

  2447. you

  2448. have

  2449. shown

  2450. us

  2451. mercy

  2452. oh

  2453. how

  2454. kind

  2455. how

  2456. loving

  2457. how

  2458. gracious

  2459. how

  2460. undeserving

  2461. we

  2462. are

  2463. and

  2464. how

  2465. deserving

  2466. you

  2467. are

  2468. of

  2469. praise

  2470. and

  2471. glory

  2472. and

  2473. how

  2474. we

  2475. thank

  2476. you

  2477. Lord

  2478. that

  2479. you

  2480. have

  2481. been

  2482. patient

  2483. in

  2484. history

  2485. choosing

  2486. not

  2487. yet

  2488. to

  2489. bring

  2490. the

  2491. judgment

  2492. that

  2493. you

  2494. have

  2495. promised

  2496. in

  2497. order

  2498. that

  2499. you

  2500. might

  2501. save

  2502. the

  2503. full

  2504. number

  2505. of

  2506. your

  2507. people

  2508. thank

  2509. you

  2510. that

  2511. you've

  2512. waited

  2513. another

  2514. day

  2515. so

  2516. that

  2517. people

  2518. here

  2519. in

  2520. this

  2521. room

  2522. can

  2523. hear

  2524. your

  2525. voice

  2526. calling

  2527. out

  2528. to

  2529. them

  2530. to

  2531. come

  2532. and

  2533. follow

  2534. you

  2535. Lord

  2536. how

  2537. we

  2538. pray

  2539. that

  2540. they

  2541. would

  2542. hear

  2543. your

  2544. voice

  2545. and

  2546. respond

  2547. and

  2548. how

  2549. we

  2550. pray

  2551. that

  2552. you

  2553. might

  2554. hold

  2555. us

  2556. and

  2557. keep

  2558. us

  2559. until

  2560. the

  2561. day

  2562. that

  2563. we

  2564. see

  2565. you

  2566. face

  2567. to

  2568. face

  2569. in

  2570. Jesus

  2571. name

  2572. we

  2573. pray

  2574. Amen!
