  1. Good morning. We're going to read in the book of 1 Corinthians, chapter 1, verse 1 to 9.

    1 Corinthians 1:1–9

  2. !

  3. I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.

  4. For in him you have been enriched in every way, with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge.

  5. God does confirming our testimony about Christ among you.

  6. Therefore, you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

  7. He will also keep you firm to the end so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  8. God is faithful. Who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

  9. Amen.

  10. Amen. Please join me in a word of prayer.

  11. Father, you say in your word that the unfolding of your word gives light.

  12. We pray now that as we think together about the beginning of Paul's letter to the Corinthians,

  13. that you would shed light in our hearts.

  14. That we might see you more clearly.

  15. That we might see ourselves and our world more clearly.

  16. And that we might see the grace and glory of your Son, Jesus, more clearly.

  17. So that we might trust him and love him and follow him all our days.

  18. Please help me to preach.

  19. Please give us ears to hear as your word goes forth.

  20. We ask these things in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. Well, greetings again from Franconia Baptist Church in Northern Virginia.

  23. We pray for all of you often.

  24. It is a joy to sing God's praises with you.

  25. Let me just start by telling you something that surely you know.

  26. And that is that God has given you a wonderful gift in Steve, your pastor.

  27. Steve is a dear friend of mine.

  28. I worked with him from 2016 to 2018.

  29. I have learned so much from Steve about ministry, about following Jesus.

  30. He was really one of the first people to help me learn to preach.

  31. So the next 30 minutes are his fault.

  32. Steve loves God's word.

  33. One of the passages I pray for myself all the time is from 1 Timothy chapter 2,

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  34. where Paul tells Timothy to be diligent, to work hard, to show himself approved,

  35. as he handles accurately God's precious word of truth.

  36. And Steve is that kind of man.

  37. He loves God's precious word of truth, and he spends his life laboring to handle it accurately

  38. for the good of God's people.

  39. One of the verses that we pray for ourselves as elders at Franconia Baptist Church is from

  40. 1 Peter chapter 5, where Peter says that we ought to shepherd the flock of God,

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  41. which Jesus bought with his blood, like Jesus, humbly and lovingly and gently.

  42. And that is the kind of pastor that God has given you in Steve.

  43. So I thank God for him, and I know you do as well.

  44. Well, it's a joy to visit another healthy church in another part of the globe.

  45. Our sermon text this morning was written to perhaps a significantly less healthy church.

  46. 1 Corinthians, and by the way, we say 1 Corinthians.

  47. I know you say 1 Corinthians.

  48. So pardon me for saying 1 Corinthians.

  49. 1 Corinthians was written to the church in Corinth by the Apostle Paul in 53 or 54 AD.

  50. Let me first tell you the story of Paul's relationship with this church in Corinth,

  51. leading up to the writing of this letter.

  52. So in Paul's day, Corinth was an extremely wealthy and an extremely worldly city.

  53. Corinth sat at the intersection of two trade routes, one a land trade route and two a sea trade route.

  54. And so there was a lot of money in Corinth.

  55. And as a result, there were a lot of people in Corinth because people tend to flock to money.

  56. Sexual immorality was extremely prevalent in Corinth.

  57. One of the famous Greek writers a few hundred years before Paul had coined the term to Corinthize,

  58. which is a way of saying to commit fornication.

  59. So Corinth was an extremely worldly, pagan, sexually immoral city.

  60. But around 50 or 51 AD, about 20 years after the Lord Jesus died and rose,

  61. the Apostle Paul brought to Corinth the good news about God's son Jesus,

  62. that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,

  63. that he died to atone for the sins of all who would trust in him,

  64. to wash their sins away by his precious blood,

  65. that he rose from the dead three days later in victory over sin and death,

  66. and that he will share his righteousness and his eternal life with all who will trust in him.

  67. And Paul brought that message to Corinth.

  68. And when he did, many of the Corinthians believed.

  69. They turned from sin and idolatry and they trusted in God's son Jesus.

  70. And Paul says that they were washed by his blood.

  71. They were sanctified or made holy by their union with him.

  72. They were justified.

  73. They were declared righteous because of what Jesus had done for them.

  74. The Apostle Paul stayed in the city of Corinth for about a year and a half,

  75. preaching and nurturing this infant church,

  76. helping them to learn what it means to follow Jesus,

  77. now that they've been united to him.

  78. And about a year and a half after he came,

  79. Paul leaves to continue to spread the gospel in other places.

  80. Around 52 AD, Paul leaves Corinth.

  81. And in Paul's absence, the church in Corinth becomes what theologians like to call a hot mess.

  82. The church begins to fracture.

  83. There are divisions.

  84. Certain sects form in the church more devoted to their sort of favorite personal leaders than to Jesus.

  85. There's lots of quarreling in the church.

  86. Some of the members are suing each other over petty and insignificant matters.

  87. Some of the members are imitating the pagan, sexually immoral practices that they had left behind.

  88. They're visiting prostitutes.

  89. Many in Corinth are flirting with serious doctrinal errors.

  90. Some of them seem to be leaning toward a denial of the resurrection,

  91. which is pretty important in Christian doctrine.

  92. Their worship services are a mess.

  93. People see corporate worship as a time to sort of big up themselves,

  94. to highlight their own gifts and prominence,

  95. rather than to build up the body of Christ.

  96. The Lord's Supper.

  97. Paul says that when the church gathers to take the Lord's Supper,

  98. some leave hungry, even though it was a potluck meal,

  99. and some leave drunk.

  100. And in the midst of all of this mess,

  101. somehow the Corinthians are becoming terribly proud.

  102. Their view of themselves is that they're an excellent church.

  103. They're a next-level church.

  104. Some of them are gifted orators.

  105. Many of them are incredibly educated and knowledgeable.

  106. So they think they're great.

  107. Well, in 53 or 54 AD,

  108. after Paul gets a report of how things are going in Corinth,

  109. Paul sits down to write this letter,

  110. 1 Corinthians or 1 Corinthians.

  111. And you can see that Paul is facing a tricky task,

  112. a complex task.

  113. Paul needs to unify this divided church.

  114. He needs to challenge their pride.

  115. He needs to warn them against the sin and the error

  116. that they are playing with.

  117. He needs to help them get their act together

  118. when they gather as a church.

  119. He needs to maintain his relationship with them,

  120. and he needs to help them start growing again.

  121. He needs to encourage them to continue to conform

  122. to the image of Jesus and to follow him.

  123. Well, if you are the Apostle Paul

  124. sitting down to write that letter,

  125. I wonder how you would begin.

  126. What do you say first as you start that tricky letter

  127. that's going to need to contain some stinging rebukes?

  128. How do you start?

  129. What do you say first to set up well

  130. for everything else that follows?

  131. The heart of this passage,

  132. which begins Paul's letter,

  133. is there in verse 4.

  134. This is how Paul starts his letter

  135. to the Corinthian church.

  136. Look there in verse 4.

  137. I always thank my God for you

  138. because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.

  139. There's a lot going on in this passage.

  140. In a moment, we'll walk through these verses,

  141. but the big picture is that Paul begins

  142. his letter to the Corinthian church

  143. by thanking God for his grace

  144. given to them in Christ Jesus.

  145. Paul begins by thanking God

  146. for his grace to the messy Corinthian church.

  147. Let's take just a few minutes now

  148. and walk through the details of this text.

  149. So there in verse 1,

  150. Paul introduces himself as an apostle.

  151. That is to say,

  152. he is an authorized representative of Jesus.

  153. Jesus has commissioned Paul

  154. to speak his own words to his people.

  155. So Paul's not just writing with some tips and ideas.

  156. He's writing the very word of God

  157. because he is an apostle.

  158. Paul mentions Sosthenes there.

  159. Probably Sosthenes is the scribe

  160. to whom Paul is dictating.

  161. There in verse 2,

  162. Paul identifies to whom he's writing.

  163. He calls them the church of God in Corinth.

  164. And notice Paul says there in verse 2

  165. that this church has been sanctified

  166. or made holy in Jesus Christ.

  167. Already this morning,

  168. we've sung about God's holy name.

  169. What it means for God to be holy

  170. is that God is completely pure.

  171. There is no sin or evil or falsehood in God.

  172. And what's more,

  173. God is separate and distinct

  174. from the world that he has made.

  175. To put it mildly,

  176. God is supremely special.

  177. So what Paul means when he says

  178. that the Corinthians have been sanctified

  179. or made holy

  180. is that through Jesus,

  181. the Corinthians have been given

  182. a special relationship with God.

  183. They belong to him.

  184. The Corinthians are God's precious possession.

  185. They've been washed and made holy

  186. by the blood of Jesus

  187. and now they belong to God.

  188. That's what it means

  189. that they are sanctified.

  190. What a marvelous privilege

  191. to belong to God

  192. as his own purified,

  193. special possession.

  194. But notice this privilege

  195. of being sanctified.

  196. It doesn't only belong

  197. to the Corinthians.

  198. Paul says that they've been sanctified there

  199. together with all those

  200. everywhere

  201. who call on the name

  202. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  203. both their Lord and ours.

  204. Can you see what Paul is doing?

  205. Already,

  206. already,

  207. he is both encouraging

  208. and humbling,

  209. the Corinthians.

  210. He's pointing out

  211. that they have this

  212. inestimable privilege

  213. of belonging to God

  214. as his holy people,

  215. but lest they get big heads about it,

  216. he says,

  217. by the way,

  218. that's the same privilege

  219. that God has given

  220. to all of his people

  221. everywhere,

  222. entirely by grace.

  223. There in verse 3,

  224. Paul tells the Corinthians

  225. how God feels about them.

  226. Friend,

  227. do you ever wonder that?

  228. How God feels about you?

  229. What his heart in heaven

  230. is toward you?

  231. Especially when you're

  232. a bit of a mess

  233. like the Corinthians?

  234. Look there in verse 3.

  235. Paul says,

  236. grace and peace to you

  237. from God our Father

  238. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  239. Christian,

  240. if you belong to Jesus,

  241. if you've turned from sin

  242. and are trusting in him

  243. to reconcile you to God,

  244. to make you holy,

  245. this is God's heart toward you.

  246. Grace and peace.

  247. What is grace?

  248. Grace is undeserved favor.

  249. Grace is free kindness.

  250. It is a generous

  251. and loving heart attitude

  252. of God toward us.

  253. That's what grace is.

  254. What is peace?

  255. Peace is relational harmony.

  256. Peace is when all is well

  257. between you and someone you love.

  258. A Christian,

  259. if you belong to Jesus,

  260. God's grace and peace

  261. are yours

  262. because of Christ.

  263. That's his heart toward you.

  264. One full of grace.

  265. One desiring peace with you,

  266. having made peace with you

  267. through Jesus.

  268. Verse 3 tells us about

  269. God's heart

  270. toward the Corinthians.

  271. Verse 4 tells us about

  272. Paul's heart

  273. toward the Corinthians.

  274. Paul has been praying

  275. for the Corinthians.

  276. He's been pouring out

  277. his heart to God

  278. about this church

  279. that's caused him

  280. so much pain and trouble.

  281. What do you think Paul

  282. has been praying

  283. for the Corinthians?

  284. Probably many things,

  285. but the first thing,

  286. the thing he always prays

  287. when he prays for them

  288. is to give thanks

  289. to God for them.

  290. And so he tells them,

  291. he says,

  292. Corinthians,

  293. I'm so thankful for you.

  294. Every time I open my mouth

  295. in prayer to God,

  296. I thank him.

  297. I don't thank you,

  298. Corinthians,

  299. but I thank God

  300. for his kindness,

  301. his grace to you,

  302. the way that he's poured out

  303. his favor on you.

  304. All the love that he's shown you

  305. in saving you through Jesus

  306. and all the work

  307. that he's doing in you

  308. through his Holy Spirit.

  309. I thank God

  310. for his grace to you

  311. given in Jesus Christ.

  312. Because you have him,

  313. because you belong to him.

  314. And then in the rest

  315. of this passage

  316. from verses 5 to 9,

  317. Paul unpacks,

  318. explains,

  319. what the grace of God

  320. at work in the Corinthians

  321. has looked like.

  322. There in verse 5,

  323. Paul says that God's

  324. Holy Spirit,

  325. whom Jesus sends

  326. to live inside

  327. all who trust in him,

  328. he says that the Holy Spirit

  329. has enriched them

  330. with gifts,

  331. with all speech

  332. and knowledge.

  333. Interestingly,

  334. later in the letter,

  335. Paul will go after

  336. the Corinthians

  337. for misusing

  338. their speech

  339. and their knowledge

  340. in selfish ways.

  341. But here,

  342. Paul encourages them,

  343. that the Spirit

  344. has gifted them.

  345. He sees that,

  346. verse 6,

  347. as evidence

  348. that the gospel

  349. is true.

  350. You could look

  351. at the Corinthians' lives

  352. and the ways

  353. that the Spirit

  354. was transforming

  355. and empowering them

  356. and you could see,

  357. hey,

  358. this message

  359. about Jesus

  360. is true.

  361. He really died

  362. and rose

  363. and ascended to heaven

  364. and gave these people

  365. his Holy Spirit.

  366. The Spirit's work

  367. in them confirms,

  368. Paul says,

  369. the truth

  370. of the gospel.

  371. There in verse 7,

  372. Paul says that

  373. as a result,

  374. because they have

  375. the Holy Spirit,

  376. they have everything

  377. they need

  378. as they wait

  379. for Jesus

  380. to come back

  381. and finish

  382. their salvation

  383. by drawing them

  384. to himself

  385. as they wait

  386. for the appearance

  387. of Jesus.

  388. And Paul says

  389. in verse 8

  390. that he's very confident

  391. that God will

  392. keep them

  393. standing firm

  394. until Jesus

  395. comes back,

  396. not because the

  397. Corinthians are so great,

  398. not because they're

  399. so stable and solid,

  400. but because,

  401. verse 9,

  402. God is faithful.

  403. God is the one

  404. who called them.

  405. I'm sure you've

  406. heard about that

  407. as you've been

  408. studying through Romans.

  409. God is the one

  410. who spoke to them

  411. in a way

  412. that their hearts

  413. could not resist

  414. so that they responded

  415. to his gospel

  416. with faith.

  417. God called them,

  418. Paul says,

  419. and that's why

  420. he's confident

  421. that God will

  422. keep them

  423. standing firm

  424. in their faith

  425. in Jesus

  426. until the very

  427. end.

  428. Well,

  429. a few minutes ago

  430. I told you

  431. the story

  432. of the Corinthian church

  433. in all its messiness

  434. and everything

  435. that I said

  436. was true.

  437. But it's clear

  438. that Paul

  439. sees a much

  440. bigger story

  441. going on

  442. in the life

  443. of the Corinthian church.

  444. See,

  445. it's not primarily

  446. a story

  447. about the Corinthians

  448. and their problems.

  449. It's not primarily

  450. a story

  451. about how messy

  452. that church is.

  453. It's not primarily

  454. a story

  455. about how gifted

  456. that church is.

  457. That's what the

  458. Corinthians thought

  459. the story was about.

  460. When Paul looks

  461. at the Corinthians,

  462. he sees

  463. a story

  464. about the grace

  465. of God

  466. in Christ Jesus

  467. at work

  468. in sinful people

  469. to save

  470. and transform him.

  471. The big story

  472. in Corinth

  473. is not,

  474. wow,

  475. look at those

  476. gifted superstars.

  477. It's not,

  478. wow,

  479. look at those losers.

  480. It's,

  481. wow,

  482. look at the grace

  483. of God

  484. at work

  485. in sinful people

  486. through Jesus Christ.

  487. Look at the

  488. transforming power

  489. of God.

  490. Look at the

  491. almighty favor

  492. of God

  493. given

  494. to the Corinthians

  495. freely,

  496. graciously

  497. through Jesus.

  498. Jesus.

  499. And so Paul

  500. begins this

  501. letter to the

  502. Corinthians

  503. by directing

  504. their attention

  505. away from

  506. themselves

  507. and towards

  508. God's kindness

  509. in Jesus.

  510. And here's the

  511. point.

  512. Here's the point

  513. for you and me.

  514. That is where

  515. their eyes

  516. need to be fixed

  517. if they are

  518. going to grow.

  519. If the

  520. Corinthians

  521. are going to

  522. grow

  523. into the

  524. mature,

  525. godly,

  526. holy,

  527. unified people

  528. that God

  529. is calling

  530. them to be,

  531. their eyes

  532. must be

  533. fixed,

  534. not on their

  535. problems,

  536. not on their

  537. gifts and

  538. excellencies,

  539. but on God's

  540. grace to

  541. them in

  542. Jesus Christ.

  543. And brothers and

  544. sisters,

  545. we grow

  546. when our

  547. eyes are

  548. fixed on

  549. God's grace

  550. in Jesus

  551. Christ.

  552. That's the

  553. takeaway.

  554. we grow

  555. as Christians

  556. when our

  557. attention

  558. is riveted

  559. on God's

  560. grace,

  561. his kindness,

  562. his favor,

  563. his love

  564. for us,

  565. given to us

  566. in Jesus

  567. Christ.

  568. If we want to

  569. grow in wisdom,

  570. in love,

  571. in humility,

  572. in unity,

  573. in holiness,

  574. the saving

  575. grace of

  576. God in

  577. Jesus must

  578. dominate

  579. our attention.

  580. We need to

  581. sing and pray

  582. and teach

  583. and talk

  584. about it.

  585. We need to

  586. read about

  587. and meditate

  588. on it

  589. day after

  590. day.

  591. We grow

  592. when our

  593. eyes are

  594. fixed on

  595. God's grace

  596. in Jesus

  597. Christ.

  598. Let me give

  599. you two

  600. reasons why

  601. that is the

  602. case.

  603. Two reasons

  604. why we

  605. grow when

  606. our eyes

  607. are fixed

  608. on God's

  609. grace in

  610. Jesus.

  611. The first

  612. is that

  613. God's grace

  614. humbles

  615. our pride.

  616. God's grace

  617. in Jesus

  618. Christ humbles

  619. our pride.

  620. Christian,

  621. let me tell

  622. you a story.

  623. It's our

  624. story.

  625. Once upon

  626. a time,

  627. we did

  628. not love

  629. God.

  630. Once upon

  631. a time,

  632. we lived

  633. in rebellion

  634. against God.

  635. We broke

  636. his law

  637. when we

  638. felt like

  639. it.

  640. Even when

  641. we kept

  642. his law

  643. outwardly,

  644. it was

  645. not because

  646. we loved

  647. God.

  648. And right

  649. in the

  650. middle of

  651. us not

  652. loving

  653. God,

  654. God

  655. loved

  656. us.

  657. And he

  658. gave his

  659. son Jesus

  660. to die

  661. and rise

  662. to save

  663. us.

  664. He did

  665. what he

  666. did for

  667. the

  668. Corinthians

  669. for us.

  670. He called

  671. us into

  672. fellowship

  673. with his

  674. son.

  675. He sent

  676. his spirit

  677. to open

  678. our eyes

  679. and give

  680. us faith.

  681. And now

  682. by the

  683. grace of

  684. God,

  685. we too

  686. are

  687. sanctified.

  688. We are

  689. holy.

  690. We are

  691. in a

  692. special

  693. relationship

  694. with

  695. Jesus.

  696. And ever

  697. since our

  698. conversion,

  699. we're still

  700. not that

  701. good at

  702. loving God,

  703. at obeying

  704. him,

  705. at living

  706. holy lives.

  707. Even as a

  708. Christian,

  709. we are so

  710. often,

  711. I am so

  712. often selfish

  713. and insensitive

  714. and proud

  715. and foolish

  716. and moody.

  717. We are far

  718. often,

  719. far more

  720. like the

  721. Corinthians

  722. than we

  723. would like

  724. to admit.

  725. And yet

  726. again and

  727. again and

  728. again,

  729. God showers

  730. his grace,

  731. his forgiveness,

  732. his favor on

  733. us through

  734. Jesus.

  735. and we

  736. know that

  737. we'll make

  738. it to the

  739. end because

  740. God,

  741. who called

  742. us,

  743. is faithful

  744. to keep

  745. us in

  746. fellowship

  747. with his

  748. son,

  749. Jesus.

  750. Let me

  751. tell you,

  752. when I

  753. remember that

  754. that's my

  755. story,

  756. it's really

  757. hard to be

  758. proud.

  759. It's really

  760. hard to

  761. think too

  762. highly or

  763. too much

  764. or too

  765. often of

  766. myself.

  767. See,

  768. like the

  769. Corinthians,

  770. so many

  771. of my

  772. problems

  773. stem from

  774. my pride.

  775. The reason

  776. I quarrel

  777. with people

  778. is my

  779. pride.

  780. The reason

  781. I get

  782. moody

  783. is because

  784. of my

  785. pride.

  786. I think

  787. I'm not

  788. getting what

  789. I deserve.

  790. The reason

  791. I am

  792. discontent

  793. is because

  794. of my

  795. pride.

  796. The reason

  797. that I am

  798. selfish toward

  799. others is

  800. because of

  801. my pride.

  802. But when

  803. I fix

  804. my eyes

  805. on God's

  806. grace

  807. toward me

  808. in Jesus

  809. Christ,

  810. my pride

  811. is leveled.

  812. It's humbled

  813. because I

  814. see what I

  815. deserve in

  816. the cross

  817. and I

  818. see what

  819. I've been

  820. given in

  821. the resurrection.

  822. God's

  823. grace

  824. humbles

  825. our pride.

  826. Let me

  827. give you a

  828. second reason

  829. that we

  830. grow when

  831. our eyes

  832. are fixed

  833. on God's

  834. grace in

  835. Jesus Christ.

  836. God's

  837. grace

  838. guards us

  839. from

  840. despair.

  841. God's

  842. grace

  843. guards us

  844. from despair.

  845. I said

  846. earlier that

  847. in this

  848. letter,

  849. Paul will

  850. need to

  851. deliver some

  852. hard-hitting

  853. rebukes in

  854. this letter.

  855. And he

  856. does.

  857. I read it

  858. through.

  859. You'll see

  860. he calls

  861. them spiritual

  862. infants.

  863. At one

  864. point,

  865. he just

  866. tells them

  867. point blank.

  868. He says,

  869. you are

  870. arrogant.

  871. This is my

  872. favorite.

  873. In chapter

  874. 15,

  875. he says,

  876. wake up

  877. from your

  878. drunken

  879. stupor

  880. as is

  881. right and

  882. do not

  883. go on

  884. sinning.

  885. If they

  886. didn't get

  887. the message,

  888. he follows

  889. that up

  890. by saying,

  891. I say

  892. this to

  893. your

  894. shame.

  895. He says,

  896. you ought

  897. to feel

  898. bad about

  899. this,

  900. Paul says.

  901. And

  902. brothers and

  903. sisters,

  904. there will

  905. be times

  906. in our

  907. lives,

  908. there are

  909. times in

  910. my life

  911. when we

  912. need

  913. rebuke

  914. from

  915. God's

  916. word,

  917. from

  918. other

  919. brothers

  920. or

  921. sisters.

  922. Sometimes

  923. we will

  924. need

  925. reproof.

  926. We will

  927. need to

  928. be told

  929. what you're

  930. doing is

  931. wrong.

  932. That was

  933. wrong.

  934. That was

  935. foolish.

  936. That was

  937. selfish.

  938. Sometimes

  939. we'll need

  940. to hear

  941. that.

  942. And I

  943. don't know

  944. about you,

  945. but sometimes

  946. when I

  947. am rebuked

  948. or reproved,

  949. I start

  950. to interpret

  951. that reproof

  952. as

  953. condemnation.

  954. Someone

  955. is reproving

  956. me,

  957. and I

  958. quickly

  959. interpret

  960. that as

  961. condemnation.

  962. When I

  963. hear,

  964. hey,

  965. what you

  966. did was

  967. not good,

  968. I instead

  969. understand,

  970. I am

  971. not okay.

  972. And so

  973. I slide

  974. toward

  975. despair,

  976. that I'm

  977. not okay.

  978. And when

  979. I respond

  980. to rebuke

  981. with despair,

  982. that's

  983. actually the

  984. enemy

  985. of my

  986. growth.

  987. Despair

  988. is actually

  989. the enemy

  990. of my

  991. growth,

  992. because if

  993. rebuke leads

  994. me to

  995. despair,

  996. I will

  997. not want

  998. to hear

  999. rebuke.

  1000. I will

  1001. be defensive.

  1002. I will

  1003. make it my

  1004. habit to

  1005. focus on

  1006. others'

  1007. flaws

  1008. instead of

  1009. my own.

  1010. And what's

  1011. more,

  1012. we don't

  1013. really

  1014. function

  1015. very well

  1016. when we

  1017. feel

  1018. condemned.

  1019. I don't

  1020. know about

  1021. you,

  1022. but if

  1023. you feel

  1024. like you're

  1025. under God's

  1026. condemnation,

  1027. it can feel

  1028. really hard

  1029. to love

  1030. God,

  1031. even though

  1032. his condemnation

  1033. is just.

  1034. And so

  1035. if we want

  1036. to grow,

  1037. we need to

  1038. fix our

  1039. eyes on

  1040. God's

  1041. grace,

  1042. on the

  1043. reality that

  1044. even though

  1045. we are

  1046. works in

  1047. progress,

  1048. even though

  1049. much sin

  1050. and corruption

  1051. and fault

  1052. remains in

  1053. us,

  1054. we are

  1055. loved.

  1056. God does

  1057. not reject

  1058. us.

  1059. We remain

  1060. sanctified.

  1061. We remain

  1062. God's special

  1063. holy possession.

  1064. He continues

  1065. to pour

  1066. his favor

  1067. on us

  1068. and to

  1069. live at

  1070. peace with

  1071. us.

  1072. When we

  1073. know that,

  1074. that's when

  1075. we have the

  1076. security to

  1077. hear the

  1078. rebuke that

  1079. we need

  1080. because we

  1081. know that

  1082. we're not

  1083. being condemned.

  1084. We know

  1085. that as

  1086. Proverbs

  1087. says,

  1088. God's

  1089. discipline

  1090. for us

  1091. comes from

  1092. his love

  1093. and so

  1094. we'll be

  1095. able to

  1096. grow.

  1097. God's

  1098. grace

  1099. humbles

  1100. our pride

  1101. and guards

  1102. us from

  1103. despair.

  1104. That's why

  1105. we need to

  1106. fix our

  1107. eyes on

  1108. how gracious

  1109. he has

  1110. been to

  1111. us through

  1112. Jesus

  1113. if we

  1114. are to

  1115. grow.

  1116. Maybe the

  1117. best way

  1118. that we

  1119. can apply

  1120. this passage

  1121. is to do

  1122. just what

  1123. we'll do

  1124. in a few

  1125. minutes

  1126. which is

  1127. to sing

  1128. about the

  1129. grace of

  1130. God given

  1131. to us in

  1132. Jesus Christ

  1133. to remind

  1134. ourselves that

  1135. God is

  1136. for us

  1137. that he is

  1138. for us with

  1139. his almighty

  1140. favor because

  1141. of Jesus.

  1142. Before we

  1143. close,

  1144. there's just

  1145. one final

  1146. way that we

  1147. ought to apply

  1148. the text.

  1149. There's one

  1150. way that we

  1151. can help

  1152. one another

  1153. fix our

  1154. eyes on

  1155. God's grace

  1156. in Jesus

  1157. Christ and

  1158. that is

  1159. that we

  1160. can learn

  1161. to encourage

  1162. one another

  1163. and we

  1164. can learn

  1165. to encourage

  1166. one another.

  1167. Christian,

  1168. the way

  1169. that you

  1170. treat one

  1171. another

  1172. ought to

  1173. reflect the

  1174. way that

  1175. God has

  1176. treated you

  1177. in Jesus.

  1178. See,

  1179. the Corinthians

  1180. must have

  1181. known on

  1182. some level

  1183. that they

  1184. were kind

  1185. of the

  1186. problem

  1187. church.

  1188. They must

  1189. have sensed

  1190. the growing

  1191. tension in

  1192. their relationship

  1193. with Paul.

  1194. How would

  1195. they have

  1196. felt when

  1197. they opened

  1198. this letter

  1199. and the

  1200. first lines

  1201. are lines

  1202. of kindness,

  1203. lines of

  1204. encouragement,

  1205. lines of

  1206. grace and

  1207. favor?

  1208. They would

  1209. have seen

  1210. in Paul's

  1211. encouragement

  1212. a reflection

  1213. of God's

  1214. kindness.

  1215. Christian,

  1216. do you

  1217. want to

  1218. display God's

  1219. grace to

  1220. others?

  1221. Learn to

  1222. be an

  1223. encourager.

  1224. Don't be

  1225. a flatterer.

  1226. Don't say

  1227. things that

  1228. are not

  1229. true.

  1230. Don't

  1231. refuse also

  1232. to say

  1233. hard things,

  1234. but learn

  1235. to see

  1236. the grace

  1237. of God

  1238. at work

  1239. in your

  1240. brothers and

  1241. sisters,

  1242. and truly

  1243. and genuinely

  1244. to encourage

  1245. them,

  1246. to point

  1247. out God's

  1248. grace at

  1249. work in

  1250. others.

  1251. From

  1252. 2016 to

  1253. 2018,

  1254. I worked

  1255. for Steve

  1256. at a

  1257. church in

  1258. Liverpool.

  1259. And at

  1260. the end

  1261. of my

  1262. time there,

  1263. after two

  1264. years of

  1265. working for

  1266. Steve when

  1267. I was

  1268. 21 to

  1269. 23,

  1270. Steve called

  1271. me up in

  1272. front of the

  1273. church,

  1274. and he

  1275. did not

  1276. tell the

  1277. story of

  1278. how I

  1279. slept

  1280. through

  1281. preparing for

  1282. an important

  1283. evangelistic

  1284. event.

  1285. He did

  1286. not tell

  1287. the story

  1288. of how I

  1289. accidentally

  1290. dropped the

  1291. church

  1292. teapot lid

  1293. into the

  1294. River

  1295. Mersey.

  1296. He did

  1297. not bring

  1298. me up in

  1299. front of

  1300. the church

  1301. and say,

  1302. David is a

  1303. 23-year-old

  1304. who thinks

  1305. that he knows

  1306. quite a lot

  1307. more than

  1308. he does,

  1309. which he

  1310. could have

  1311. said.

  1312. He said,

  1313. David,

  1314. you've done

  1315. a good job.

  1316. We thank

  1317. God for

  1318. his grace

  1319. at work

  1320. in you

  1321. and for

  1322. the way

  1323. that he's

  1324. blessed us

  1325. through you.

  1326. And that's

  1327. a small

  1328. thing.

  1329. It's a

  1330. small thing.

  1331. But here's

  1332. why it

  1333. matters.

  1334. That is

  1335. what Jesus

  1336. Christ is

  1337. like.

  1338. Brothers and

  1339. sisters,

  1340. one day we

  1341. will stand

  1342. before the

  1343. judgment seat

  1344. of Jesus

  1345. and we

  1346. will give

  1347. an account

  1348. for all

  1349. our thoughts,

  1350. all our

  1351. words,

  1352. and all

  1353. our deeds.

  1354. And because

  1355. of his

  1356. own grace,

  1357. Jesus will

  1358. cover

  1359. and forgive

  1360. all

  1361. our

  1362. sins.

  1363. And because

  1364. of his

  1365. grace,

  1366. he will

  1367. say to

  1368. people like

  1369. you and

  1370. people like

  1371. me,

  1372. well done,

  1373. good and

  1374. faithful servant.

  1375. And he

  1376. will get the

  1377. glory for

  1378. his grace

  1379. to us and

  1380. in us.

  1381. Brothers and

  1382. sisters,

  1383. we grow

  1384. when our

  1385. eyes are

  1386. fixed on

  1387. that grace.

  1388. Let me

  1389. pray before

  1390. we sing.

  1391. Father,

  1392. thank you

  1393. for your

  1394. grace to

  1395. us in

  1396. Christ Jesus

  1397. that through

  1398. his death

  1399. and resurrection

  1400. we are

  1401. sanctified,

  1402. we are

  1403. yours forever.

  1404. Thank you,

  1405. Lord,

  1406. that we can

  1407. be certain

  1408. that you

  1409. will hold

  1410. us fast,

  1411. keep us

  1412. standing firm

  1413. in Christ

  1414. until the

  1415. day he is

  1416. revealed,

  1417. until he

  1418. comes again.

  1419. Father,

  1420. we pray that

  1421. each one of

  1422. us,

  1423. day after

  1424. day,

  1425. would rivet

  1426. our attention

  1427. on the

  1428. grace that

  1429. you have

  1430. poured out

  1431. on us

  1432. through Jesus,

  1433. that your

  1434. grace would

  1435. humble us

  1436. out of our

  1437. pride as we

  1438. remember how

  1439. good you've

  1440. been to us

  1441. in spite of

  1442. our sins,

  1443. and that your

  1444. grace would

  1445. guard us

  1446. from despair

  1447. so that even

  1448. as we see

  1449. sin remaining

  1450. in us,

  1451. we are

  1452. secure in

  1453. your love.

  1454. Would we

  1455. pray that

  1456. we would

  1457. reflect your

  1458. own grace

  1459. to one

  1460. another in

  1461. the way

  1462. that we

  1463. celebrate

  1464. your grace

  1465. in each

  1466. other's

  1467. lives.

  1468. Lord,

  1469. give us

  1470. joy now

  1471. as we

  1472. sing of

  1473. your

  1474. kindness.

  1475. In Jesus'

  1476. name,

  1477. amen.
