  1. Oh, Heavenly Father, it is daunting to try and think about your greatness and your majesty and your glory.

  2. ! We're very conscious of not only the inadequacy of our minds to grasp this truth, but also the sinfulness of our hearts, which pushes against this kind of truth about your bigness and your greatness.

  3. So, Lord, we pray this evening that you would especially help us, not only in sort of understanding the concepts here, but also joyfully submitting to your greatness and your majesty and your glory.

  4. Lord, we do recognize that you revealing your greatness to us, even though we can't grasp it or understand it fully, you do reveal it to us because you love us and you want us to know you.

  5. And so we pray that we'd submit with joy as we read your word together this evening, as we think about it. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  6. Good evening. Come and join us.

  7. Sit on the back row that we took away. Yeah, there you go.

  8. We've come this evening to chapter three of the Baptist Confession of Faith and to what it calls God's decrees.

  9. Let me give you a brief recap. It's been a couple of weeks.

  10. So these sessions, we've been looking at how the 1689 Baptist Confession outlines answers to questions that we're all still asking.

  11. The 1689 Baptist Confession, if you've never heard of it, was an amended version of the Westminster Confession, which was written just down the road at Westminster Abbey in the Jerusalem Room,

  12. which apparently you're not allowed to go into. But anyway, you can go and ask if you like.

  13. The Westminster Confession was written in the midst of the English Civil War when Parliament was fighting the crown.

  14. And it was quickly followed and largely copied and pasted by the Savoy Declaration, which was written by the Congregationalists.

  15. And then the Baptist Confession, which was written by the Baptist.

  16. Now, the decrees of God in chapter three are all about God's sovereignty.

  17. That is God's power over all things.

  18. This is the idea that God rules and reigns not only just over the good things in our world, but also over the bad things, the evil things in our world.

  19. That all things, everything without exception is accomplishing God's plan.

  20. So both good and wicked accomplish the purposes of God.

  21. Now, before we dive into what the Confession says, I want to read to you a string of Bible references.

  22. My intention here is to overwhelm you, right?

  23. Not just in a kind of like, oh, my goodness, there's so much information.

  24. I can't take it all in, but it will do that.

  25. But also, I want you to see that this is that the writers of the Confession are trying to capture a theme that comes all the way through the scriptures, right?

  26. They're not just kind of proof texting an idea off just a couple of verses.

  27. So I want to start at the beginning of the Bible.

  28. We're going to start in Genesis chapter 50.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  29. Genesis chapter 50, Joseph's brothers following the death of their father, Jacob, are worried that Joseph might now take the opportunity to pay them back for selling him into slavery.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  30. And so Joseph replies to them.

  31. But Joseph said to them, don't be afraid.

  32. Am I in the place of God?

  33. You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

  34. Now, notice what he says.

  35. He doesn't say, you intended to harm me, but God allowed you to do it.

  36. He doesn't even say God knew what would happen.

  37. Rather, he says, in a parallel to them, you intended it for evil.

  38. God intended it for good.

  39. So although the brothers intended it, it was in their will to do it,

  40. their intentions, their will only ever accomplished what God's intention was.

  41. Now, when you start to think about the implications of all that, it is incredible, isn't it?

  42. It means that in all of the intentions of the brothers' hearts in throwing Joseph down the well, in selling him into slavery,

  43. all of those intentions were submitting to, in some sense, unconsciously to the grand intentions of God to save his people.

  44. And so he was involved even at that level of what was going on.

  45. Not just knowing, but intending to accomplish a purpose.

  46. Exodus chapter 3, God speaking to Moses about how he's going to work in freeing the Israelites from Egypt.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  47. He says this,

  48. Notice this, that God's will shapes the disposition of the Egyptians towards the Israelites.

  49. That the Egyptians aren't coerced against their will to give generously to the Israelites as they leave,

  50. but rather that the Egyptians willingly give their gold and silver to the Israelites as they leave,

  51. because God willed it.

  52. So God wills it, and they carry it out willingly.

  53. Their will turns out to be God's sovereign will.

  54. Jump forward a few books in the Bible to 1 Samuel chapter 19.

    1 Samuel 19 chapter mention

  55. Here we have the nation of Israel under Saul, and David is the king in waiting.

  56. Everybody knows it.

  57. David is growing in popularity.

  58. They sing the song, don't they, that David's killed a lot more people than Saul.

  59. Everyone is more excited about David than they are about Saul.

  60. Listen to what is said about Saul.

  61. Once more, war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines.

  62. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.

  63. But an evil spirit from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand,

  64. while David was playing the lyre.

  65. Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear,

  66. but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall.

  67. At night, David made good his escape.

  68. It's incredible, isn't it?

  69. God is not evil, right?

  70. God is holy.

  71. That is the witness of all the scriptures.

  72. But still, God is in control of Saul's evil intentions in such a way

  73. that it is described as he sends the evil spirit into Saul,

  74. which gives him the desire to kill David.

  75. The desire to kill David is not God's desire.

  76. That's a wicked desire, isn't it?

  77. But the desire that Saul has to kill David is not outside of God's control.

  78. In fact, he stands behind it.

  79. It works in submission to his will and his purpose.

  80. King Ahab, the king of Israel, the bad king.

  81. I would love to read you the whole story.

  82. But basically, this is what's going on.

  83. They're about to go into war together.

  84. The king of Israel is going to go with the king of Judah.

  85. And they seek out the prophets to see what the outcome is going to be.

  86. And they all prophesy that it's going to be amazing

  87. and that King Ahab is going to win a victory.

  88. And then Micaiah continues.

  89. He says,

  90. One suggested this and another that.

  91. And finally, a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord and said,

  92. I will entice him.

  93. By what means?

  94. The Lord asked.

  95. I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouth of all his prophets, he said.

  96. You will succeed in enticing him, said the Lord.

  97. Go and do it.

  98. So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours.

  99. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.

  100. It carries on.

  101. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, went up to Ramoth Gilead.

  102. This is where they're going to have the great success

  103. because all the prophets have said they're going to be really successful.

  104. But the prophets decreeing success is because of a deceiving spirit

  105. that the Lord has put in their mouths.

  106. The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,

  107. I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes.

  108. So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.

  109. Now the king of Aram had ordered his 32 chariot commanders,

  110. don't fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.

  111. When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat,

  112. they thought surely this is the king of Israel.

  113. So they turned to attack him.

  114. But when Jehoshaphat cried out,

  115. the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel

  116. and stopped pursuing him.

  117. But someone drew his bow at random

  118. and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor.

  119. The king told his chariot driver,

  120. wheel around and get me out of the fighting.

  121. I've been wounded.

  122. All day long, the battle raged

  123. and the king was propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans.

  124. The blood from his wound ran onto the floor of the chariot

  125. and that evening he died.

  126. As the sun was setting,

  127. a cry spread through the army,

  128. every man to his town,

  129. every man to his land.

  130. So the king died and was brought to Samaria

  131. and they buried him there.

  132. They washed the chariot at the pool in Samaria

  133. where the prostitutes bathed

  134. and the dogs licked up his blood

  135. as the word of the Lord had declared.

  136. Now, right, that's a longer passage

  137. and we don't have time to get into the detail of it.

  138. But just notice the depth of God's control.

  139. God puts the lying spirit into the lives of the prophets

  140. so that they entice him into battle.

  141. This is just like with Saul again, isn't it?

  142. It's exactly the same kind of language.

  143. And then he, God is so in charge

  144. that the apparently random firing of an arrow

  145. through the sky in the heat of battle,

  146. it lands in the only place possible

  147. for it to kill King Ahab.

  148. Now think about what that means.

  149. It means that God's suffering control

  150. is over the flight of every arrow,

  151. the flight of every drone

  152. or every missile or every bullet,

  153. all landing in exact spot

  154. in which the Lord intends it to.

  155. And it's not just that he's

  156. governing the physics of that, right?

  157. That might be one thing for us to believe,

  158. that God governs the physics of our world

  159. so that objects fly in certain directions.

  160. He also rules over the desires of human hearts

  161. that are involved in the firing of those arrows as well.

  162. Now that's all Old Testament narrative stories.

  163. I could have given you more,

  164. but the Old Testament stories of God's sovereign power

  165. are just a small sample

  166. of how the Bible deals with God's sovereignty.

  167. The prophets then come.

  168. And in lots of ways,

  169. the prophets are the preachers of the Old Testament.

  170. They take what's written,

  171. especially in the law

  172. and in the accounts of history

  173. and the revelation of God that they're receiving

  174. and they preach it to the people.

  175. And what do they say?

  176. Well, here's a couple of examples.

  177. Isaiah 46.

  178. Remember the former things,

  179. those of long ago.

  180. I am God and there is no other.

  181. I am God and there is none like me.

  182. I make known the end from the beginning,

  183. from ancient times,

  184. what is still to come.

  185. I say my purpose will stand

  186. and I will do all that I please.

  187. From the East, I summon a bird of prey,

  188. from a far off land,

  189. a man to fulfill my purpose.

  190. What I have said,

  191. that I will bring about.

  192. What I have planned,

  193. that I will do.

  194. Exactly the same idea, isn't it?

  195. God's will governs and rules history.

  196. He is God.

  197. There is none like him.

  198. He does what he pleases,

  199. even to the point of summoning birds of prey,

  200. foreign armies and leaders

  201. to come and accomplish what he has planned

  202. because what he has planned

  203. is what he will do using all means

  204. because all means are in his control.

  205. Now you jump forward to the New Testament,

  206. you find that Jesus speaks of God's authority

  207. in this same way to account for people's attitudes towards him.

  208. So now we've moved from sort of geopolitics,

  209. now into the areas of belief and unbelief

  210. and attitudes to Jesus.

  211. Jesus, if you like,

  212. is the new Joseph.

  213. He is the new people of God.

  214. He is the new David.

  215. And so what we're seeing in God's sovereignty

  216. and control over their attitudes to those people

  217. is now seen in their attitudes to Jesus himself.

  218. John chapter six,

  219. Notice that.

  220. For people to come to Jesus,

  221. it has to be God's action first.

  222. He has to enable them.

  223. Coming to Jesus is impossible for them

  224. without the enabling of God.

  225. God's will has to make the first move.

  226. God has to will it and enable it.

  227. Again, same idea.

  228. John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  229. Jesus answered,

  230. I did tell you,

  231. I did tell you I was the Messiah,

  232. but you did not believe.

  233. The works I do in my father's name testify about me,

  234. but you do not believe

  235. because you are not my sheep.

  236. My sheep listen to my voice.

  237. I know them and they follow me.

  238. I give them eternal life

  239. and they shall never perish.

  240. No one shall snatch them out of my hand.

  241. The unbelief of the people

  242. is because they are not my sheep.

  243. So they will not listen to his voice.

  244. Interestingly, what they respond,

  245. the Jews after this is,

  246. what do they say?

  247. We're not going to listen to him.

  248. That's what they say.

  249. Why listen to him?

  250. He's crazy.

  251. Don't listen to him.

  252. But they don't listen

  253. because they are not his sheep

  254. and so they do not believe.

  255. The early church then in the book of Acts

  256. bring the same doctrine to the fore

  257. and they use it to explain the atonement,

  258. Jesus' death at the cross.

  259. So the church pray,

  260. Acts chapter four,

  261. they say,

  262. indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate

  263. met together with the Gentiles

  264. and the people of Israel in this city

  265. to conspire against your holy servant,

  266. Jesus, whom you had anointed.

  267. They did.

  268. So they conspired against Jesus, right?

  269. They planned and they plotted.

  270. But they did, verse 28,

  271. what your power and will

  272. had decided beforehand would happen.

  273. In other words,

  274. even in following their desires,

  275. even in their plotting and their scheming,

  276. they are only ever doing

  277. what God had already decided should happen.

  278. Again, it's the same idea, isn't it?

  279. Herod, Pontius Pilate,

  280. the Gentiles and the people of Israel,

  281. even in their conspiring,

  282. are only ever accomplishing

  283. what God had decided would happen.

  284. Now, then the epistles,

  285. the apostles take this same doctrine,

  286. not only to explain our reactions to Jesus,

  287. not only to explain the atonement,

  288. not only to explain history,

  289. but also to explain personally

  290. how you and I experience salvation.

  291. Ephesians chapter one,

  292. praise be to God,

  293. the father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  294. who has blessed us in the heavenly realms

  295. with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  296. Why?

  297. For he chose us in him

  298. before the creation of the world

  299. to be holy and blameless in his sight.

  300. In love, he predestined us

  301. for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ

  302. in accordance with his pleasure and will

  303. to the praise of his glorious grace,

  304. which he has freely given us

  305. in the one he loves.

  306. In other words,

  307. our belief finds its root,

  308. not in our hearts first,

  309. but in the eternal will of God

  310. who decided before the creation

  311. who would be saved.

  312. Those are the ones predestined,

  313. not because of anything they had done,

  314. because they have, by definition,

  315. not done anything,

  316. not just because they were going

  317. to become Christians anyway,

  318. but because God decided.

  319. The root of the action

  320. is in the will of God.

  321. He decides for reasons not given

  322. and for reasons only contained within himself,

  323. because at that point,

  324. nothing else existed.

  325. So God's sovereign will

  326. over belief and unbelief,

  327. over our responses to Jesus,

  328. over the atonement,

  329. over the events of all of history.

  330. Those are just a quick run through

  331. some Bible passages.

  332. Talk to the person next to you.

  333. What is striking or surprising

  334. about what we've read?

  335. What does it mean about God

  336. and what he is like?

  337. Have a think about those questions

  338. for a moment.

  339. We'll feedback,

  340. and then we'll come up

  341. with four conclusions.

  342. Go for it.

  343. Okay.

  344. Any,

  345. anyone want to feedback?

  346. Anything that was said

  347. in a Greek?

  348. Yes,

  349. come.

  350. Come.

  351. You said something helpful

  352. about the section,

  353. the 1 Samuel verses,

  354. about the evil spirit from the Lord.

  355. You said a line about something like how,

  356. although God,

  357. God and wickedness can't be together,

  358. I just,

  359. I thought that was helpful

  360. when you said it,

  361. but it's just a problem.

  362. Okay.

  363. I'm not quite sure what I said.

  364. So,

  365. He's not making the evil,

  366. like,

  367. no.

  368. I think it's like,

  369. if you've called it,

  370. God's made that back.

  371. Right.

  372. Yeah.

  373. God is in control

  374. of Saul's evil intentions

  375. in such a way

  376. that he is able

  377. to send the evil spirit

  378. into Saul

  379. so that he seeks

  380. to kill David.

  381. The desire to kill David

  382. is not God's,

  383. that's wicked,

  384. but the desire that Saul

  385. had to kill David

  386. is not outside of God's control.

  387. In fact,

  388. he stands behind it.

  389. Yeah,

  390. so,

  391. the Bible is really clear

  392. that God is not wicked,

  393. but he stands behind wickedness

  394. in such a way

  395. that he is not morally responsible for it,

  396. but it is not outside of his control.

  397. And it's really important

  398. that we hold that.

  399. We don't know all of the

  400. details about how exactly

  401. that works.

  402. But if that is not true,

  403. you have a world

  404. in which God's purposes

  405. can be thwarted.

  406. You and I might not be saved.

  407. Right?

  408. The church might not survive.

  409. The gates of hell

  410. might prevail.

  411. Yeah?

  412. But we're told they won't

  413. because God is so...

  414. Yeah.

  415. Dane,

  416. did you have your hand up?

  417. Were you...

  418. No, no.

  419. That's right.

  420. Okay.

  421. Okay.

  422. Yeah.

  423. Yeah.

  424. And also,

  425. what's the point in praying

  426. if God can't answer the prayers?

  427. Yes.

  428. What's the point in praying

  429. if God can't answer the prayers?

  430. Jim Packer,

  431. speaking,

  432. I think,

  433. to university students,

  434. I think in Cambridge,

  435. I don't know,

  436. probably in Cambridge,

  437. but it's always there,

  438. isn't it?

  439. Right?

  440. In the...

  441. It becomes a book called

  442. Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God,

  443. and he says,

  444. I know you all already believe

  445. in God's sovereignty

  446. over belief and unbelief,

  447. and I can prove it to you.

  448. You all pray

  449. for your friends and family

  450. to come to know Christ.

  451. And if God had no power

  452. or control,

  453. what would be the point in praying?

  454. Because you're better off

  455. stop wasting your time praying

  456. and go and nag them

  457. to become a Christian

  458. because the solution

  459. lies in their heart,

  460. not in God's.

  461. Great.

  462. Let me conclude

  463. with the four things

  464. that the confessions

  465. sort of greet these together,

  466. and we can ask questions

  467. along the way through.

  468. The confessions essentially

  469. then say four things

  470. about God's decrees.

  471. They take passages

  472. like the ones

  473. that we've looked at

  474. and others,

  475. and this is what they say.

  476. The number one thing,

  477. God is in charge of everything.

  478. The creed puts it like this.

  479. From all eternity,

  480. God decreed everything

  481. that occurs

  482. without reference

  483. to anything

  484. outside himself

  485. because there wasn't

  486. anything outside himself,

  487. right?

  488. He did this

  489. by the perfectly wise

  490. and holy counsel

  491. of his own will

  492. freely

  493. and unchangeably.

  494. Yet God did this

  495. in such a way

  496. that he is neither

  497. the author of sin

  498. nor has any fellowship

  499. with any in their sin.

  500. This decree

  501. does not violate

  502. the will of the creature

  503. or take away

  504. the free working

  505. or contingency,

  506. dependency,

  507. on second causes.

  508. On the contrary,

  509. these are established

  510. by God's decree.

  511. In this decree,

  512. God's wisdom

  513. is displayed

  514. in directing

  515. all things

  516. and his power

  517. and faithfulness

  518. are demonstrated

  519. in accomplishing

  520. his decree.

  521. Notice here

  522. that the confession

  523. wants to say

  524. that it is not

  525. God's sovereignty

  526. versus human freedom,

  527. right?

  528. Both of those exist

  529. at the same time

  530. and actually

  531. it is God's sovereignty

  532. itself,

  533. his power

  534. over all things,

  535. which provides

  536. the realm

  537. for human freedom.

  538. Without God's sovereignty,

  539. you would have

  540. no freedom.

  541. Without God's power

  542. and control

  543. over all things,

  544. you would have

  545. no freedom

  546. or responsibility.

  547. So that's how

  548. it states it.

  549. The point is that

  550. God rules over

  551. big things,

  552. small things,

  553. hidden things,

  554. invisible things.

  555. He decrees,

  556. declares,

  557. decides what will happen,

  558. not by seeking

  559. somebody else,

  560. but in himself.

  561. And notice again,

  562. this is what we were

  563. talking about with Daisy,

  564. he is not the author

  565. of sin,

  566. he is not morally

  567. responsible for it,

  568. he is not

  569. being wicked,

  570. but neither is he

  571. forcing or violating

  572. the will of the creature.

  573. So people do

  574. what they want,

  575. the archer wanted

  576. to fire the arrow,

  577. the Jews wanted

  578. to kill Jesus,

  579. Joseph's brothers

  580. wanted to sell him

  581. into slavery,

  582. but still the Lord

  583. decrees those things

  584. to accomplish his purposes.

  585. Now the point of this

  586. is that we would see

  587. his wisdom,

  588. God is the author

  589. of the story,

  590. works all things

  591. to accomplish

  592. his decrees.

  593. Now one of the ways

  594. that theologians

  595. have sort of tried

  596. to square the circle,

  597. is that what you're saying?

  598. Or whatever,

  599. about this,

  600. is to talk about

  601. the two wills of God,

  602. not in opposition

  603. to one another,

  604. but sort of over one another.

  605. So they talk about

  606. God's sovereign will

  607. and God's moral will.

  608. Okay,

  609. so God has a

  610. sovereign will

  611. over all things

  612. which cannot be

  613. thwarted or defeated.

  614. So let's think

  615. about the cross.

  616. It is in God's

  617. eternal plan

  618. from before the

  619. foundation of the world

  620. that God the Son

  621. would take on human flesh

  622. and die on a cross

  623. for the sins

  624. of his people,

  625. right?

  626. That is in God's

  627. sovereign overall plan

  628. that cannot be

  629. thwarted or changed.

  630. And yet in his

  631. moral will,

  632. right,

  633. in terms of what

  634. God wants

  635. and desires

  636. for people,

  637. what is moral

  638. and good,

  639. having murderous

  640. intent

  641. towards the divine

  642. Son in human flesh

  643. is about as wicked

  644. as you can get,

  645. right?

  646. There isn't really

  647. anything as immoral

  648. as that,

  649. right?

  650. That is the height

  651. of immorality.

  652. So you've got the cross

  653. being both

  654. in his sovereign will

  655. but against his moral will.

  656. And lots of things

  657. work out like that,

  658. don't they?

  659. So that God can

  660. sovereignly decide

  661. that something

  662. against his moral will

  663. will happen

  664. whilst he is not

  665. morally responsible

  666. for it in order

  667. to accomplish his

  668. purposes in glory.

  669. And that's exactly

  670. how it works

  671. with the cross,

  672. isn't it?

  673. People are held

  674. responsible for the

  675. wickedness of killing

  676. the Son

  677. and yet in their

  678. wickedness they

  679. accomplish God's

  680. sovereign plan

  681. and purpose.

  682. You might want to say

  683. all things work

  684. together for good

  685. for those who love

  686. God and are called

  687. according to his

  688. purpose.

  689. Secondly,

  690. this is more

  691. than knowing

  692. what will happen.

  693. I think,

  694. say,

  695. we were talking

  696. in the group

  697. at the back

  698. there a moment ago

  699. just that the

  700. question that comes

  701. to mind is why?

  702. Why?

  703. Why?

  704. Like why?

  705. Why choose some

  706. people and not all

  707. people?

  708. And we don't know

  709. the answers to these

  710. questions,

  711. don't we?

  712. So sometimes what we

  713. try and do is

  714. accommodate God's

  715. sovereignty to something

  716. that we can understand.

  717. So we might want to say,

  718. oh well God,

  719. because he's sort of

  720. outside of time

  721. and because he is

  722. bigger and greater

  723. than anyone or

  724. anything else,

  725. he can sort of see

  726. what will happen

  727. in human freedom

  728. and he can sort of

  729. retrospectively decide

  730. that and foresee it.

  731. But the creed is very,

  732. or the confession

  733. is very careful

  734. to say that

  735. that is not the case.

  736. It's more than

  737. Jesus just knew

  738. who would believe

  739. in him

  740. and so settled

  741. on choosing them.

  742. It's rather that

  743. God's intentions

  744. in those things

  745. are being achieved.

  746. So chapter three,

  747. part two,

  748. the confession says,

  749. God knows everything

  750. that could happen

  751. under any given

  752. conditions.

  753. However,

  754. his decree

  755. of anything

  756. is not based

  757. on foreseeing

  758. it in the future

  759. or foreseeing

  760. that it would occur

  761. under such conditions.

  762. In other words,

  763. he's not just like

  764. a really good chess player

  765. who can see like

  766. ten moves ahead

  767. or whatever

  768. and then just

  769. outmaneuvers everybody

  770. to accomplish

  771. what he wants.

  772. Rather,

  773. actually,

  774. his will

  775. is what decides

  776. what will happen.

  777. God stands over history.

  778. He is the author

  779. of history.

  780. Now,

  781. that's really important,

  782. isn't it?

  783. Because it means

  784. that he is not

  785. a passenger

  786. of fate

  787. or human freedom

  788. who just happens

  789. to know where

  790. things might go

  791. and just is a better

  792. player of history

  793. than you or I.

  794. The Bible never talks

  795. about God like that.

  796. God intends

  797. Joseph's brothers

  798. to sell him

  799. into slavery,

  800. which means that

  801. he steered

  802. even Joseph's arrogance

  803. and his brother's

  804. hatred of his arrogance.

  805. He provided the well

  806. for them

  807. at just the right opportunity.

  808. He made sure,

  809. didn't he,

  810. that Reuben

  811. didn't have a chance

  812. to rescue him

  813. so that he would

  814. get sold

  815. into slavery.

  816. Number three,

  817. this decree

  818. includes salvation.

  819. This is probably

  820. the most difficult

  821. part of all this.

  822. It's one thing,

  823. isn't it,

  824. to realize that

  825. God decrees events.

  826. It's another thing

  827. to see and admit

  828. that he governs

  829. belief and unbelief too.

  830. But again,

  831. that's what we found

  832. in the scriptures.

  833. Jesus says it,

  834. no one can come to me

  835. unless the Father

  836. enables it.

  837. You do not believe in me

  838. because you're not my sheep.

  839. And so the confession says,

  840. by God's decree

  841. and for the demonstration

  842. of his glory,

  843. some men and angels,

  844. men using as in humanity,

  845. are predestined

  846. or foreordained

  847. to eternal life

  848. through Jesus Christ

  849. to the praise

  850. of his glorious grace,

  851. echoing Ephesians 1.

  852. Others are left

  853. to live in their sin,

  854. leading to their

  855. just condemnation

  856. to the praise

  857. of his glorious grace.

  858. Part five,

  859. those men and women

  860. who are predestined

  861. to life

  862. were chosen by God

  863. before the foundation

  864. of the world

  865. according to his eternal

  866. and unchangeable purpose

  867. in the secret counsel

  868. and good pleasure

  869. of his will.

  870. He chose them in Christ

  871. for eternal glory

  872. purely as a result

  873. of his free grace

  874. and love

  875. without anything else

  876. about them

  877. serving as a condition

  878. or cause

  879. moving him to do so.

  880. Now it's really important

  881. that you read this carefully.

  882. The confession

  883. is really clear

  884. to separate belief

  885. and unbelief

  886. and how God

  887. stands behind

  888. both those things.

  889. So notice what he says

  890. in chapter 3,

  891. part 3.

  892. Notice he says,

  893. God's decree

  894. and for the demonstration

  895. of his glory,

  896. some men and angels

  897. are predestined

  898. or foreordained

  899. to eternal life

  900. through Jesus Christ

  901. to the praise

  902. of his glorious grace.

  903. Others are left

  904. to live in their sin.

  905. The confession

  906. is surprised

  907. by the grace

  908. of God

  909. to sinners,

  910. not the condemnation

  911. of sinners.

  912. Right?

  913. Left to our own devices,

  914. we would all be lost

  915. and condemned.

  916. That's the point,

  917. isn't it?

  918. The wonder

  919. of the confession,

  920. the wonder

  921. of the scriptures,

  922. the wonder

  923. of Ephesians 1

  924. is that God

  925. in his kindness

  926. chooses to save any

  927. because nobody

  928. deserves it.

  929. There is no condition

  930. in humanity

  931. which deserves

  932. the salvation

  933. that we receive

  934. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  935. There is nothing

  936. in us

  937. that would deserve

  938. the love

  939. that Christ has shown

  940. in coming and dying

  941. on the cross.

  942. So there can't be

  943. a reason in us.

  944. And so he stands

  945. behind belief

  946. and unbelief

  947. in slightly different ways,

  948. doesn't he?

  949. He graciously

  950. and for reasons

  951. only known

  952. and understood

  953. by himself,

  954. he loves

  955. and saves some

  956. and others

  957. are left

  958. to live in their sin

  959. leading to their

  960. just condemnation

  961. to the praise

  962. of his glorious grace.

  963. Now I realize

  964. that it is difficult.

  965. The asymmetry

  966. between them

  967. is important

  968. to hold on to

  969. but it doesn't answer

  970. all of our questions.

  971. But really I think

  972. we're supposed

  973. to be in awe

  974. and wonder

  975. that God

  976. for some reason

  977. known only to himself

  978. has chosen to love us.

  979. As he describes

  980. in the Old Testament

  981. when he's trying

  982. to explain

  983. why he loves Israel,

  984. he says,

  985. I loved you

  986. because

  987. the next phrase,

  988. I loved you

  989. because

  990. I loved you.

  991. That's his answer.

  992. I loved you

  993. because I loved you.

  994. You want to know

  995. a reason for my love?

  996. It's because of my love.

  997. The cause is

  998. within God himself.

  999. Now just think

  1000. about what that means,

  1001. right?

1002. Just think how that works,

  1003. right?

  1004. Just think

  1005. that God

  1006. stands behind

  1007. then

  1008. in his sovereign power

  1009. all things

  1010. that brought you

  1011. to faith

  1012. in Jesus Christ.

  1013. Now I can't remember

  1014. everyone's testimony.

1015. I was trying to think

  1016. of someone's testimony here

1017. but I'm going to pick Ray

1018. and you can correct me,

  1019. Ray,

  1020. where I'm wrong,

  1021. right?

  1022. So the Lord

  1023. sovereignly decided

  1024. that Ray

  1025. would be born

  1026. on Salisbury Road

  1027. above the laundrette,

  1028. right?

  1029. And that in his

  1030. teenage years

  1031. he would encounter

  1032. the gospel

  1033. and be drawn

  1034. into friendships

  1035. with other believers.

  1036. And so

  1037. it's not an accident

  1038. that those people

  1039. were in his life

  1040. at that time.

  1041. You know,

  1042. the conversations

  1043. that were had

  1044. that encouraged Ray

  1045. to start thinking

  1046. about the gospel,

  1047. they were not

  1048. accidents,

  1049. right?

  1050. The Lord

  1051. did that.

  1052. Now why would

  1053. the Lord do that?

  1054. Well because

  1055. in time eternity

  1056. before Ray

  1057. even existed,

  1058. the Lord

  1059. chose

  1060. to love him

  1061. and save him

  1062. and as he

  1063. sovereignly rules

  1064. over all things,

  1065. organises all of that

  1066. for the purpose

  1067. of eventually

  1068. Ray freely

  1069. responding to the call

  1070. of the gospel

  1071. in his life.

  1072. And if you're a Christian

  1073. this evening,

1074. God's done all of that

  1075. for you.

  1076. I had the privilege

  1077. of being raised

  1078. by Christian parents

  1079. who prayed for me

  1080. and shared the gospel

  1081. with me.

  1082. Oh yeah,

  1083. well that just means

  1084. that you're conditioned

  1085. to believe.

  1086. You've never really

  1087. kind of had chance

  1088. to freely respond

  1089. to the gospel.

  1090. What if

  1091. God is so sovereign

  1092. that his intention

  1093. to save me

  1094. involved placing me

  1095. in the particular family

1096. that he placed me in

  1097. whereby I would hear

  1098. the gospel

1099. in the way that I did

  1100. in order for me

  1101. to be saved?

  1102. You know,

1103. the flyer that was left

  1104. on the car windscreen,

  1105. the person that gave

  1106. the gospel to you

  1107. as you were walking

  1108. out the tube station,

  1109. you know,

  1110. the Christian friend

1111. who just wouldn't give up

  1112. inviting you to church,

1113. none of that was an accident.

1114. None of that was an accident.

1115. The Lord stands behind it all

  1116. working in order

  1117. to accomplish his purpose

  1118. in eternity.

  1119. Incredible, isn't it?

  1120. Incredible truth.

  1121. Okay.

1122. Just as God has appointed

  1123. the elect to glory,

  1124. so he has,

  1125. by the eternal

  1126. and completely free purpose

  1127. of his will,

  1128. foreordained all the means.

  1129. It's how the confession

  1130. puts it.

  1131. I don't know whether

1132. I put that on your handout.

  1133. He's foreordained

  1134. all the means.

1135. Isn't just that he says

  1136. this is the end,

  1137. but he goes,

1138. this is how we're going

1139. to get there as well.

  1140. Finally, number four,

1141. and this is really important.

1142. We're going to end here.

  1143. Oh gosh, it's nearly 7.30.

1144. We need to treat this doctrine

  1145. with great care.

1146. Yeah, this is really important.

  1147. I think our struggles

  1148. with the doctrine

  1149. of God's sovereignty

1150. are probably not so much

1151. to do with the logic of it

  1152. or the absence

1153. of Bible material on it.

  1154. There's so much

  1155. Bible material on it

  1156. and actually,

  1157. the logic of it

1158. in terms of the bigness

  1159. of God

  1160. makes absolute sense,

  1161. doesn't it,

  1162. of the God

  1163. that we worship.

1164. The problem that we have

  1165. with it is that

  1166. it's badly used

  1167. or abused

  1168. by Christians

  1169. who wrongly apply

  1170. the doctrine

  1171. or contradict other things

1172. that the Bible also says

  1173. which we'll come to

  1174. in weeks to come.

1175. So the Confession says this

  1176. in its final section

1177. on the decrees of God.

  1178. It says this,

  1179. the doctrine

  1180. of the high mystery

  1181. of predestination

  1182. is to be handled

  1183. with special prudence

  1184. and care

  1185. so that those

  1186. heeding the will

  1187. of God revealed

  1188. in his word

  1189. and obeying him

  1190. may be assured

  1191. of their eternal election

  1192. by the certainty

  1193. of their effectual calling.

  1194. In this way,

  1195. the doctrine

  1196. will give reasons

  1197. for praise,

  1198. reverence

  1199. and admiration

  1200. of God

  1201. as well as humility,

  1202. diligence

  1203. and rich comfort

  1204. to all who sincerely

  1205. obey the gospel.

  1206. Here's the point,

  1207. the Bible's teaching

  1208. on God's sovereignty

  1209. and his predestination

1210. of those who would believe

  1211. is not written,

  1212. one,

1213. to answer all the questions

  1214. you might have,

  1215. it's not.

  1216. Two,

  1217. it's not written

  1218. to contradict

  1219. human freedom

  1220. and responsibility

  1221. because the Bible

  1222. teaches that too.

  1223. Three,

  1224. it's not written

  1225. to prevent you

  1226. from sharing the gospel

  1227. with people

  1228. or praying for people,

  1229. it's exactly the opposite.

  1230. Instead,

  1231. it's written

  1232. because God wants you

  1233. to know

  1234. that you are saved

  1235. because he loves you.

  1236. Ultimately,

  1237. he is holding you,

1238. you are not holding him

  1239. and he wants you

  1240. to know that

  1241. because if you think

  1242. your Christian life

1243. is you holding on to God,

1244. you will not make it.

  1245. Only if you understand

1246. and only if it's true,

  1247. which it is,

1248. that God holds on to us

1249. will we make it to glory

  1250. because if you know

  1251. anything about yourself,

  1252. you should know

1253. that your grip on God

  1254. is way too weak

  1255. to last

  1256. through life's trials

  1257. and purposes.

1258. But God has a hold on you,

  1259. says the confession,

  1260. says God's words,

  1261. and history is

  1262. accomplishing his purpose.

  1263. He will finish

  1264. what he has started

  1265. in your life.

1266. He's not just working it out

  1267. on the fly.

  1268. Whoa,

  1269. didn't realize

  1270. that would happen.

  1271. Goodness me,

  1272. I didn't realize

  1273. that their children

  1274. would be wayward

  1275. or difficult.

  1276. I didn't realize

  1277. that their parents

  1278. would not approve

  1279. of their new faith

  1280. in Jesus Christ.

  1281. He's not shocked

1282. by any of those things,

  1283. is he?

  1284. But he's working

  1285. all things out

  1286. for the purpose

  1287. of his glory,

1288. that you can trust him

  1289. and praise him

  1290. and give him

  1291. all the glory.

  1292. I've finished there.

  1293. Any questions

1294. as we wrap it up?

  1295. Yes.

  1296. So, like,

  1297. how does this

  1298. inform our daily lives?

  1299. I understand

  1300. how, like,

  1301. completely understand

  1302. how predestination

  1303. is comforting to us

  1304. and is something

1305. that we can fall back on.

  1306. But, like,

  1307. in our daily lives,

  1308. how does this impact?

  1309. Like,

  1310. does God,

  1311. if I miss a bus,

  1312. God's sovereignty is that?

  1313. If I choose what,

  1314. and the vitamin S,

  1315. does God's sovereignty

  1316. end up?

  1317. How does that

1318. live through the daily life

  1319. besides salvation?

  1320. Yes.

  1321. If God is sovereign

  1322. over all things,

  1323. how does that affect

  1324. daily life?

  1325. So,

  1326. it shouldn't paralyze you

  1327. into not making

  1328. any decisions,

  1329. right?

  1330. Because God

  1331. gives you responsibility

  1332. to make decisions

  1333. and to move forwards

  1334. and to do things.

  1335. You know,

  1336. you can't go into M&S

  1337. and just say,

1338. I'm just going to stand here

  1339. until God writes

1340. in the sky what I'm,

  1341. you all right?

  1342. Yeah.

  1343. So,

1344. you are to go and move forward

  1345. and make those decisions.

1346. But you are to understand

  1347. that underlying

  1348. all of those things

  1349. is God's sovereign

  1350. purposes that can

  1351. never be thwarted.

  1352. So,

1353. if you take those two wills,

1354. I seek to live my life

  1355. in obedience

  1356. to God's moral will.

1357. But it is not my ability

  1358. to live according

  1359. to his moral will

  1360. that will determine

  1361. ultimately the ends.

  1362. That is in God's

  1363. sovereign purposes,

  1364. isn't it?

  1365. So,

  1366. even when I sin,

  1367. I don't worry

  1368. that God's purposes

  1369. and glory are going

1370. to be thwarted by that

  1371. because even those things

  1372. are in his

  1373. control.

  1374. So,

  1375. it brings great comfort

  1376. to me

  1377. and it relieves

  1378. a lot of

  1379. anxiety and stress.

  1380. So,

  1381. like you say,

  1382. yeah,

1383. the bus that you missed,

  1384. that's in God's

  1385. plan and purpose,

  1386. isn't it?

  1387. You may,

  1388. that doesn't mean

  1389. that it will become

  1390. obvious why that happened,

  1391. does it?

  1392. You may never know,

  1393. but you do know

  1394. that that is in

  1395. God's sovereign hands.

  1396. You know,

  1397. when you worry

  1398. and you panic,

1399. you basically have to say

  1400. to yourself,

  1401. don't you,

  1402. you know,

  1403. Lola,

  1404. Steve,

  1405. whatever,

  1406. do you really genuinely

  1407. believe in the bigness

  1408. of God?

  1409. Or do you suddenly

  1410. think that God

1411. is now out of control

1412. and that all of these

  1413. things have happened

  1414. because he's just

  1415. kind of lost it?

  1416. Oh,

  1417. no,

  1418. I don't believe that.

  1419. Oh,

  1420. right,

  1421. okay.

  1422. It will all be

  1423. all right then.

  1424. Everything will be okay.

  1425. I don't,

  1426. in terms of doctrines,

1427. like the kind of cash

1428. value of that in my

  1429. day-to-day life is massive,

  1430. absolutely massive.

  1431. Yeah.

  1432. Any other questions?

  1433. So where is our

  1434. responsibility

1435. in the whole scheme of things?

  1436. Right,

  1437. where is our responsibility

1438. in the whole scheme of things?

1439. We will come to that,

  1440. right?

  1441. So we do have

  1442. responsibility

  1443. and we are held

  1444. responsible for our

  1445. obedience or disobedience

  1446. to God's moral will.

  1447. Absolutely right.

  1448. That,

  1449. that responsibility

  1450. is,

  1451. is not in opposition

  1452. to God's sovereign

  1453. will and purpose.

  1454. It is secured

  1455. by his sovereign

  1456. will and purpose.

  1457. But you're still,

1458. you and I are still held

  1459. morally responsible

  1460. for what we do.

  1461. You know,

  1462. so,

  1463. you know,

  1464. Galatians 6,

  1465. don't,

  1466. you know,

  1467. don't be deceived.

  1468. God cannot be mocked.

1469. You reap what you sow,

  1470. right?

  1471. So there is a,

  1472. a direct relationship

  1473. between what we do

  1474. and the lives

  1475. that we receive.

  1476. But even that

  1477. is in God's

  1478. sovereign plan and purpose.

  1479. Ultimately,

  1480. you have to say,

  1481. don't you Clifford,

  1482. that you don't understand,

  1483. I don't understand,

  1484. exactly how,

  1485. what the Bible says

  1486. about my responsibility

  1487. and God's sovereignty

  1488. can be married together.

  1489. I don't understand that.

  1490. I do know that

  1491. the Bible teaches both

  1492. and I can't

  1493. kick this one out

1494. in order to keep this one

  1495. and I can't kick that one

1496. out to keep this one.

1497. I have to hold the two

1498. in tension with one another

1499. because the Bible says both.

  1500. Well,

  1501. my good intention exists.

  1502. Yeah.

  1503. Yes.

  1504. I can't resolve it for you

  1505. ultimately.

  1506. Yeah.

  1507. Yeah.

  1508. Yeah.

  1509. Great.

  1510. Let me pray.

  1511. I know we've run over time

  1512. but that was all

  1513. in God's plan.

  1514. Let me pray.

  1515. Heavenly Father,

1516. what a wonderful joy it is

1517. to know that we leave

  1518. this room tonight

  1519. absolutely inside your will

  1520. and your sovereign purposes

1521. that nothing that will happen to us

1522. will come as a surprise to you

1523. or outside of your intentions for us.

1524. Thank you that we can know

  1525. that what you've started

  1526. in our hearts,

  1527. you will finish.

  1528. There is a day

  1529. when we will stand

  1530. transformed into Christlikeness,

  1531. living with you

  1532. for all eternity

  1533. in a world remade

  1534. by your power

  1535. for your glory

  1536. forever and ever.

1537. We long for that day

  1538. and we know

  1539. we will be there

1540. because you are holding us,

  1541. not us holding you.

1542. And all things in our lives,

  1543. little and big,

  1544. are working together

  1545. for your good purposes.

  1546. So we pray

  1547. that we'd trust that

  1548. and we'd enjoy that

  1549. this week.

  1550. In Jesus' name.

  1551. Amen.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. Amen.

  1554. Thank you.
