  1. Great, we're going to be in Psalm 30 tonight. So if you want to turn to Psalm 30, I'm going to read it for us and then I'm going to pray and hand over to Clifford who's going to preach for us from Psalm 30.

  2. Let me read it for us. A Psalm, a song for the dedication of the temple of David. I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.

  3. Lord, my God, I called to you for help and you healed me. You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead. You spared me from going down to the pit.

  4. Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people. Praise his holy name. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favour lasts a lifetime.

  5. Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

  6. When I felt secure, I said, I shall never be shaken. Lord, when you favoured me, you made my royal mountain stand firm. But when you hid your face, I was dismayed.

  7. To you, Lord, I called. To the Lord, I cried for mercy. What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?

  8. Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me. Lord, be my help. You turned my wailing into dancing. You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.

  9. Lord, my God, I will praise you forever. Let me pray as Clifford comes to speak.

  10. Father, we do pray just with thankfulness for Clifford and even more for your word.

  11. And we pray, please, that you would help Clifford now to speak clearly and faithfully.

  12. Give us ears to hear what he has to say and you have to say through him. In Jesus' name.

  13. Amen.

  14. Good evening.

  15. I suspect that if I had a choice, I would perhaps be in my shorts in my back garden looking at my tomatoes.

  16. In the sovereignty of God, however, I'm here to share God's word with you. Let's pray together.

  17. Amen.

  18. Amen.

  19. And so, Father, we feel hot and bothered.

  20. And there's a sense in which we are not fully able to concentrate on your word.

  21. But thank you that you are able to concentrate on us.

  22. Meet with us as we meet around your word now.

  23. And speak to us through your word.

  24. Your written word that speaks about Jesus, the living word.

  25. In his name.

  26. Amen.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. Sometimes it's difficult to try and convey to you what privileges I feel in just standing here preaching to you.

  30. Having preached for 40, 45, 50 years in Scotland and in England.

  31. And I felt that my ministry had come to an end until it was kicked into being again by Steve.

  32. So thank you.

  33. As we look at this psalm this evening, the psalm of praise and thanksgiving from the first standard to the last.

  34. This praise is expressed six times in the psalm.

  35. The psalm is remembering the psalm.

  36. The psalm is remembering the greatness of God at a great event.

  37. The psalm is remembering the psalm.

  38. The psalm has an unusual title, dedication to the temple of David.

  39. But some evangelicals, commentators believe that this psalm was written prophetically for the dedication of the temple which David prayed for, but for his son Solomon, who actually built it.

  40. But in the context, it would seem to me that the psalm was actually written for the dedication of David's palace, not the temple.

  41. Please note that there is nothing in the psalm which describes the palace in any way.

  42. What is described is the greatness of God in his deliverance of David.

  43. So in fact, the dedication of David's house, he wanted God to be praised, not himself.

  44. He didn't want the architect to be praised or the builder, but he wanted God to get all the praise.

  45. The background to the history of David's policies, its completion is found in the book of Samuel.

  46. In 2 Samuel 5 and 11 to 12, it says this.

  47. Now Haram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with the cedar logs and carpenters and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David.

  48. Then David knew, emphasis, that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and established his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

  49. Now that's a very foundational and an important background or backdrop to the psalms that you need to have whole intention as we look at the psalm.

  50. So David, at the dedication of his house, is quite clear that he was not asking anyone to focus on himself.

  51. What perhaps could have been perceived as a monument to himself and his personal achievement,

  52. when David could have show off and said, look at me, look at my strength, look at my ability, look at my wealth.

  53. Look at my wealth.

  54. Look at my kingdom and look at my kingdom and look at the palace that I was able to build because of my ability.

  55. In influence, and to gather all the workers and materials from every part of the kingdom.

  56. And so what might have been a monument to man's achievement, instead became an occasion for David to praise God.

  57. So in this statement that we find in 2 Samuel chapter 5 and verse 11 to 12, David, in fact, knew three things that made the reign of David great.

    2 Samuel 5 chapter mention

  58. The reference is 2 Samuel 5, 11 to 12.

  59. So in this statement, David knew three things that made the reign of David great.

  60. David knew, one, that the Lord had established him as the king over Israel in verse 12.

  61. David knew, secondly, that the Lord had established his kingdom.

  62. And thirdly, David knew that God had made him king and had made and exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people.

  63. You see, David knew that God wanted to use him as a channel to bless his people.

  64. And one of the joys of being here and seeing the changes and so on.

  65. And of course, we're coming up to leadership and so on.

  66. One of the things that we need to be aware of is we want people who are aware of their being called by God to be used,

  67. not to promote themselves, but to bless the people, to serve the people.

  68. And if I understand correctly, this psalm,

  69. David is trying to make what I would call pertinent points that we need to hear,

  70. we need to understand, and we need to embrace as a fellowship and as a leadership.

  71. He says it was not for David's sake or his family that he was lifted up by God.

  72. But for the sake of the benefit of God's people.

  73. What a beautiful picture then, brothers and sisters, we have in 2 Samuel 5,

  74. and verse 11 to 12, or if you say 1 to 11, what about?

  75. About the establishment of David's house.

  76. No wonder then that we begin to see the reflection in David's heart in Psalm 30, as he wrote Psalm,

  77. I will exalt you, Lord, for you filled me, you lifted me out of the depths.

  78. And this explains to us the core reason of David's praise to God.

  79. My brothers and sisters, this evening, it will seem to me that David knew that his governance and status in Israel

  80. was not himself or his kingship, but the hand and work of God.

  81. You see, this does not mean that David passively did it all by himself.

  82. But even in his action and use of abundance and of energy,

  83. David was acutely aware that he was able to do all that he did because of God.

  84. And it is that acute awareness that we have reflected in the Psalm of Praise.

  85. Charles Spurgeon, in his commentary on the Psalm of David,

  86. he's not my favorite commentator, but I'll quote him.

  87. He writes,

  88. Grace has lifted us up from the pit of hell, from the ditch of sin,

  89. from the flow of despondent,

  90. from the bed of sickness,

  91. from the bondage of doubts and fears.

  92. Have we no song to sing

  93. a Psalm of Praise to our God?

  94. If God, in other words, he's saying,

  95. if God has done so much for us,

  96. have we not something to praise God,

  97. to give God thanks for, to exalt God for?

  98. You see, David understood in the context of the Psalm

  99. that God had lifted you up from the depths.

  100. He had sung.

  101. Deaths he had fallen,

  102. and he sung, and he sang,

  103. and he wrote the Psalm of Praise to God.

  104. In 1b, David says,

  105. You did not let my enemies gloat over me.

  106. And when I had to laugh,

  107. when I was looking at this,

  108. I could imagine some of David's enemies

  109. looking over the wall and mocking him.

  110. And what David is saying here is,

  111. God did not allow his enemies to look upon his misfortune

  112. or downfall with smugness and harmful pleasure.

  113. You know, sometimes you warn someone about something,

  114. and when it eventually happened,

  115. yeah, yeah, you know, that kind of mocking.

  116. David is saying,

  117. God did not allow his enemies to do that to him.

  118. He speaks about healing here,

  119. speaks about,

  120. and reflects upon the value of God's help to David

  121. at any time he had a need.

  122. And what we're speaking about here is not,

  123. may not have been physical healing,

  124. but many of the commentators believe

  125. that David is reflecting here

  126. about the time in his experience

  127. when God saved him from life-threatening illness.

  128. So he thanked the Lord in a variety of ways

  129. for God's dedication to his own place

  130. and his own life and service.

  131. And brothers and sisters,

  132. it's not so much the building that David is worried about.

  133. It's about the relationship that he had with this God

  134. and the relationship was found

  135. on the life that he lived with this God.

  136. No wonder then further on in the psalm,

  137. David would have us.

  138. I waited patiently for the Lord.

  139. He turned me and he heard my cry.

  140. He lifted me out of the timey pit,

  141. out of the mud and mire.

  142. He set my feet on the rock

  143. and gave me a firm place to stand.

  144. He put a new song in my mouth

  145. and a hymn of praise to our God.

  146. Many will see and fear the Lord

  147. and put their trust in him.

  148. In Psalm 40, 1 and 3,

  149. David is saying the same thing in a different way.

  150. So if verse 1 and 3 is a remembrance

  151. of the greatness of God,

  152. at the dedication of David's house,

  153. and a great event in David's life,

  154. I would suggest to you then,

  155. verse 4 and 5,

  156. we see a dawning of a new day.

  157. You see, in 4 and 5,

  158. we clearly see that the psalm

  159. is not only David's personal expression

  160. of praise, worship, and thanksgiving,

  161. but it was also used by the congregation

  162. to worship.

  163. And here David encouraged them

  164. in the words,

  165. sing praise to the Lord,

  166. you as faithful people,

  167. praise his holy name.

  168. Mark, defy the Lord with all with me,

  169. and let it exalt his name,

  170. is the AV.

  171. Personal praise and worship

  172. to a God of the Bible,

  173. what does not enrich you and me,

  174. and bring praise to God,

  175. becomes self-centered

  176. and self-indulgent.

  177. Perhaps can even lead us

  178. to thinking that we notice God

  179. better than anyone else.

  180. And one commentator said,

  181. it can lead us to pride.

  182. Verse 5,

  183. his anger lasts for a moment,

  184. but his favor lasts for a lifetime.

  185. Weeping may stay for the night,

  186. but rejoicing tarries

  187. or comes in the morning.

  188. Each morning,

  189. God's mercies are new to us,

  190. as so is his faithfulness.

  191. In Psalms 46 and verse 5,

  192. David asserts,

  193. God is in the midst of her.

  194. He shall not be moved.

  195. God shall help her

  196. at the break of dawn.

  197. In Psalms 59 and verse 16,

  198. David writes,

  199. I will sing of your power.

  200. Yes, I will sing aloud

  201. of your mercy in the morning,

  202. for you have been my defense

  203. and refuge

  204. in the day of trouble.

  205. Of course,

  206. a verse that we know very well,

  207. Jeremiah says in Lamentation,

  208. though the Lord's mercies

  209. or through the Lord's mercies

  210. we are not consumed

  211. because his compassions fail not.

  212. They are new every morning.

  213. Great is thy faithfulness.

  214. Just by way of aside,

  215. someone,

  216. a complete stranger to me,

  217. reflected yesterday

  218. and commented on the singing

  219. at the wedding.

  220. And they felt

  221. that there was something

  222. different about it.

  223. God's compassion,

  224. God's faithfulness.

  225. God was here with us yesterday

  226. as we celebrate.

  227. You see,

  228. the realize of God's mercy

  229. and compassion

  230. and faithfulness

  231. generated hope

  232. in David's soul,

  233. turning his faith arm,

  234. his contemplation of trouble

  235. into a confession

  236. of faith.

  237. Because the Lord loves us,

  238. he chastened us,

  239. but he does not consume us.

  240. But his chastening

  241. is only temporal.

  242. His discipline

  243. is but

  244. he does not destroy us.

  245. He disciplines us,

  246. but he does not

  247. destroy us.

  248. Which would lead us

  249. to despair.

  250. But the word of the Bible

  251. does not lead us

  252. to despair.

  253. He is to compassionate

  254. for that.

  255. He wants us

  256. to recognize.

  257. You see,

  258. his unbelief

  259. causes us to look

  260. to a God

  261. through the lens

  262. of circumstances.

  263. And this creates

  264. feeling

  265. of a sense

  266. of hopelessness,

  267. does it not?

  268. But faith

  269. enables us

  270. to look

  271. at our circumstances

  272. through the reality

  273. of God's promises.

  274. And this gives us hope.

  275. when we look

  276. at our reality

  277. of our circumstances

  278. through God's lens,

  279. we see things

  280. through different eyes.

  281. We see them

  282. through the eyes

  283. of faith.

  284. And this is what

  285. the psalmist

  286. is talking about.

  287. This kind of hope

  288. that the psalmist

  289. is speaking about

  290. is the resurrection

  291. of our Lord

  292. brought at the dawning

  293. of the new day

  294. for all who trust

  295. in him.

  296. So weeping

  297. comes every often

  298. as an unwelcome guest.

  299. But God's

  300. gracious favor

  301. is with us

  302. and is for us

  303. for a lifetime

  304. and into eternity.

  305. The grace

  306. that God

  307. extends to you

  308. today

  309. is not only

  310. until you die.

  311. Psalmist

  312. said,

  313. even though

  314. I walk

  315. through the valley

  316. of the shadow

  317. of death,

  318. I will fear

  319. no evil.

  320. Why?

  321. For thou art

  322. with me

  323. in life

  324. and in death.

  325. And he brings comfort.

  326. And that's

  327. to encourage us

  328. even on a warm

  329. sticky day.

  330. That's to

  331. encourage us.

  332. My brothers and sisters,

  333. I believe that

  334. this is what Paul

  335. is referring to

  336. when he wrote

  337. to the church

  338. at Corinth

  339. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  340. chapter 4

  341. and verse 16

  342. and 18.

  343. Therefore,

  344. we do not

  345. lose heart

  346. though outwardly

  347. we are wasting

  348. away,

  349. yet inwardly

  350. we are being

  351. renewed day by day

  352. for light

  353. and momentary

  354. troubles

  355. are achieving

  356. for us

  357. an eternal glory

  358. that far awaits

  359. them all.

  360. And so what

  361. do we do?

  362. He says,

  363. we fix our eyes

  364. on Jesus.

  365. Brothers and sisters,

  366. I tell you,

  367. we can't afford

  368. to lose sight

  369. of him

  370. even

  371. in tragedy.

  372. The 29th of December

  373. last day,

  374. I had the shock

  375. of my life

  376. when I had

  377. a telephone call

  378. to tell me

  379. that my nephew

  380. died

  381. in an accident.

  382. He died instantly.

  383. The other guy

  384. was thrown

  385. through the windscreen.

  386. And that very

  387. moment,

  388. I said to my wife,

  389. let's pray

  390. to God.

  391. And I know

  392. how you feel.

  393. You've got my

  394. sympathy.

  395. Paul said,

  396. we don't lose

  397. heart.

  398. we keep

  399. our eyes fixed.

  400. And Jesus,

  401. the one who

  402. is the author,

  403. and finisher

  404. of our faith.

  405. So we don't

  406. look at what

  407. is seen,

  408. but we look

  409. at what is unseen.

  410. Because what we

  411. see is temporary,

  412. transient.

  413. But what we

  414. see,

  415. is eternal

  416. in Christ.

  417. Is that not

  418. this what

  419. Jesus explained

  420. to his disciples

  421. in John chapter

    John 16:20

  422. 16,

  423. verse 20 and

  424. 22,

  425. most surely

  426. I tell you,

  427. you will weep

  428. and mourn

  429. while the world

  430. rejoices.

  431. You will grieve,

  432. but your grief

  433. will turn

  434. to God.

  435. My brothers and

  436. sisters,

  437. I have never

  438. given birth.

  439. I am privileged

  440. to be in a

  441. family of 15,

  442. 10 boys

  443. and five girls.

  444. But I know a

  445. little about

  446. childbirth,

  447. because I know

  448. my grandma used

  449. to come in the

  450. evening,

  451. and in the

  452. morning we'll

  453. hear,

  454. yeah,

  455. yeah,

  456. that means the

  457. child was born.

  458. A woman

  459. giving birth to

  460. a child has

  461. pain before

  462. time has come.

  463. But when

  464. her baby is

  465. born,

  466. she forgets

  467. the anguish,

  468. she forgets my

  469. brothers and

  470. sisters,

  471. the pain,

  472. because of her

  473. joy.

  474. That the child

  475. is born into

  476. the world,

  477. and in the

  478. child,

  479. a hope

  480. is realized.

  481. And we

  482. heard the

  483. story about

  484. the Lord

  485. Jesus Christ,

  486. unto a child

  487. is born,

  488. unto a son

  489. is given,

  490. and his name

  491. shall be called

  492. Wonderful,

  493. Counselor,

  494. Mighty God,

  495. Everlasting

  496. Father,

  497. Prince of

  498. Peace,

  499. and so on

  500. and so on.

  501. And that

  502. child went

  503. to a cross

  504. and died

  505. in your

  506. place,

  507. in my

  508. place.

  509. all the

  510. sins.

  511. We have to

  512. be careful

  513. here because

  514. my pastor

  515. told me I've

  516. got 45

  517. minutes and

  518. I wouldn't

  519. take 50.

  520. So I have

  521. to be careful.

  522. So I have

  523. to be careful.

  524. And as

  525. with the hope

  526. that is found

  527. in the child

  528. with the

  529. mother,

  530. so it is

  531. with you,

  532. says Jesus.

  533. Now it's

  534. your time

  535. of anguish,

  536. of grief.

  537. But I

  538. see you

  539. again and

  540. you will

  541. rejoice

  542. and no

  543. one

  544. will take

  545. away your

  546. joy.

  547. God's

  548. anger

  549. lasts only

  550. for a

  551. moment

  552. for its

  553. favor

  554. towards us

  555. last

  556. lifetime.

  557. In verse

  558. 6 and

  559. 10,

  560. we have a

  561. new day

  562. and

  563. although

  564. weeping

  565. therefore

  566. may stay

  567. for the

  568. night,

  569. but we

  570. have rejoicing

  571. that it's

  572. coming in the

  573. morning.

  574. And then we

  575. have

  576. verse 6 to 10,

  577. a new heart

  578. from pride to

  579. humility.

  580. In verse 6,

  581. David said,

  582. when I felt

  583. secure,

  584. I said,

  585. I shall not

  586. be shaken,

  587. moved.

  588. And the

  589. aviates said,

  590. it's now in

  591. my prosperity,

  592. I said,

  593. I shall never

  594. be removed.

  595. Prosperity here

  596. means careless

  597. ease,

  598. living carefree

  599. and self-assured

  600. life because

  601. things are going

  602. well with you.

  603. this is

  604. frequently seen

  605. in the life

  606. of the

  607. unconverted.

  608. In Psalms

  609. 10,

  610. 6,

  611. he says to

  612. himself,

  613. nothing will

  614. ever shake

  615. me and

  616. he swears

  617. that no

  618. one will

  619. ever do

  620. me harm.

  621. In Luke

  622. 12,

  623. 16,

  624. 21,

  625. where Jesus

  626. told his

  627. disciples the

  628. story of the

  629. rich man who

  630. yielded an

  631. abundant

  632. harvest.

  633. And he

  634. said to

  635. himself,

  636. this is what

  637. I will do.

  638. I will tear

  639. down my

  640. barns,

  641. build buildings

  642. and build

  643. bigger ones

  644. and there I

  645. will store

  646. my surplus

  647. grain.

  648. And I

  649. will say

  650. to myself,

  651. you have

  652. plenty of

  653. grain laid

  654. up for

  655. many years.

  656. Take

  657. life easy.

  658. Eat,

  659. drink and

  660. be merry.

  661. But God

  662. said to him,

  663. you fool.

  664. This very

  665. night your

  666. life will be

  667. demanded from

  668. you.

  669. Then you

  670. will get

  671. what you

  672. have prepared

  673. for yourself.

  674. this is how

  675. it will be

  676. whoever

  677. saw up

  678. things for

  679. themselves,

  680. but is

  681. not rich

  682. towards God.

  683. But this

  684. not only

  685. applies to

  686. the unconverted,

  687. it's a

  688. content

  689. temptation

  690. for

  691. Christians

  692. also.

  693. When we

  694. look at the

  695. prosperity of

  696. others,

  697. we can

  698. begin to

  699. be jealous

  700. and envious.

  701. Psalm speaks

  702. about it in

  703. Psalm 73.

  704. Here then

  705. is a

  706. clear warning

  707. that we

  708. ought to

  709. be aware.

  710. David

  711. says,

  712. surely God

  713. is good

  714. to Israel,

  715. to those

  716. who are

  717. pure in

  718. heart.

  719. But as

  720. for me,

  721. David

  722. said,

  723. my feet

  724. had almost

  725. slipped.

  726. I had

  727. nearly

  728. lost my

  729. foothold.

  730. He says,

  731. for I

  732. envied the

  733. arrogant when

  734. he saw

  735. the prosperity

  736. of the

  737. wicked.

  738. Verse 3,

  739. they have

  740. no struggles,

  741. their bodies

  742. are healthy

  743. and strong.

  744. Verse 40,

  745. they go to

  746. the gym

  747. every day.

  748. I see

  749. them.

  750. They are

  751. free from

  752. common human

  753. burden.

  754. They are

  755. not plagued

  756. by human

  757. ills.

  758. Therefore,

  759. pride is

  760. in their

  761. necklace.

  762. They

  763. clothe

  764. themselves

  765. with

  766. violence.

  767. From

  768. their

  769. callous

  770. hearts

  771. comes

  772. iniquity.

  773. Their

  774. evil

  775. imaginations

  776. have no

  777. limit.

  778. They

  779. scoff

  780. and speak

  781. malice

  782. with

  783. arrogance.

  784. They

  785. threaten

  786. oppression.

  787. And he

  788. goes on

  789. and goes

  790. on.

  791. Verse

  792. 12,

  793. we

  794. conclude,

  795. this is

  796. what the

  797. wicked are

  798. like.

  799. Always

  800. free of

  801. care,

  802. they go

  803. on assigning

  804. wealth,

  805. assimilating

  806. wealth.

  807. But the

  808. subject of

  809. prosperity is

  810. never without

  811. peril.

  812. the

  813. prosperity

  814. with him

  815. to

  816. affect

  817. David

  818. in an

  819. adverse

  820. way.

  821. In

  822. Psalm

  823. 30,

  824. he was

  825. not

  826. strong

  827. enough to

  828. stand

  829. his

  830. temptation.

  831. Unless we

  832. look down

  833. on David,

  834. I wonder

  835. how many of us

  836. are strong

  837. enough to

  838. stand this

  839. temptation.

  840. You see,

  841. David had

  842. become proud

  843. and self-confident.

  844. he said in

  845. his heart,

  846. when I

  847. felt secure,

  848. I said I

  849. should never

  850. be shaken,

  851. not be

  852. moved forever.

  853. In the

  854. context of

  855. David's confidence

  856. as the king

  857. of Israel

  858. and the

  859. leader of

  860. his people,

  861. no doubt

  862. he was.

  863. but you

  864. see,

  865. his heart

  866. was lifted

  867. up in

  868. the wrong

  869. way,

  870. not to

  871. God,

  872. to himself.

  873. And in

  874. the spirit

  875. of self-

  876. glorification,

  877. David commanded

  878. the commander

  879. Joab to

  880. number the

  881. people of

  882. Israel,

  883. as documented

  884. in 2

  885. Samuel 24.

  886. And as a

  887. result of

  888. that action,

  889. 70,000

  890. Israelis

  891. died.

  892. they

  893. perished.

  894. See,

  895. David became

  896. proud and

  897. wanted to

  898. magnify his

  899. own achievement

  900. rather than

  901. glorifying God.

  902. And Joab,

  903. the commander

  904. of the army,

  905. advised the

  906. king not to

  907. take the

  908. census.

  909. And he was

  910. dismissed.

  911. And his

  912. advice in

  913. 2 Samuel

  914. 24.

  915. Verse 3,

  916. when he

  917. said to the

  918. king,

  919. now may

  920. the Lord

  921. your God

  922. multiply the

  923. troops a

  924. hundred times

  925. over.

  926. May the

  927. eyes of my

  928. Lord the

  929. king see

  930. it.

  931. But why

  932. does my

  933. Lord the

  934. king desire

  935. this thing?

  936. Why?

  937. What is

  938. going on

  939. in your

  940. heart?

  941. And David

  942. took the

  943. census of

  944. the people

  945. of God

  946. without due

  947. inquiry by

  948. means of

  949. the oracle

  950. of God

  951. according to

  952. what God

  953. had commanded

  954. him to

  955. do and

  956. the people

  957. of Israel.

  958. And his

  959. chronicle for

  960. us in

  961. God's

  962. worth.

  963. According

  964. to

  965. Exodus

  966. 30,

  967. 11,

  968. 16,

  969. God

  970. was

  971. against

  972. the

  973. numbering

  974. of

  975. Israel.

  976. God

  977. was

  978. not

  979. against

  980. the

  981. numbering

  982. of

  983. Israel,

  984. but there

  985. was clear

  986. conditions in

  987. which sentences

  988. had to be

  989. taken.

  990. I don't

  991. want to

  992. bore you

  993. with the

  994. details,

  995. but it

  996. was enough

  997. for me

  998. to tell

  999. you,

  1000. each

  1001. person

  1002. over

  1003. twenty

  1004. must

  1005. pay

  1006. half

  1007. a

  1008. shekel

  1009. to

  1010. the

  1011. Lord

  1012. for

  1013. the

  1014. ransom

  1015. of

  1016. life.

  1017. The

  1018. rich and

  1019. the poor

  1020. pay the

  1021. same.

  1022. The money

  1023. received was

  1024. to be used

  1025. specifically for

  1026. the service of

  1027. the tenth of

  1028. meeting.

  1029. And being

  1030. used in this

  1031. way, it

  1032. becomes a

  1033. memorial for the

  1034. Israelite before

  1035. the Lord,

  1036. making a

  1037. tone for

  1038. their lives.

  1039. But it

  1040. would seem to

  1041. me that

  1042. David seemed

  1043. to forget

  1044. this command

  1045. of God

  1046. to Moses,

  1047. who told

  1048. them before

  1049. the hand,

  1050. that if the

  1051. multitude were

  1052. numbered,

  1053. they should

  1054. pay on

  1055. this money.

  1056. And by

  1057. its very

  1058. omission,

  1059. the price

  1060. of an

  1061. offering,

  1062. David invaded

  1063. the rights

  1064. of the

  1065. supreme king

  1066. of Israel.

  1067. set aside

  1068. the positive

  1069. command of

  1070. God.

  1071. And I

  1072. say to you,

  1073. my brothers and

  1074. sisters,

  1075. as I reflect on

  1076. that, and I'm

  1077. going to close

  1078. in a minute,

  1079. as I thought

  1080. about it, I

  1081. thought about

  1082. what is God's

  1083. will?

  1084. What is God's

  1085. purpose?

  1086. I don't know

  1087. if I've told

  1088. you, but I've

  1089. certainly told

  1090. Steve, we've

  1091. got two sons

  1092. daughters, and

  1093. both are

  1094. ministers.

  1095. And when

  1096. John, who

  1097. is eight

  1098. years older

  1099. than the

  1100. oldest one,

  1101. James, came

  1102. and approached

  1103. me and told

  1104. me he wanted

  1105. to go into

  1106. ministry, if

  1107. I'm to be

  1108. honest, my

  1109. knees buckled

  1110. because I

  1111. didn't want

  1112. him to follow

  1113. me.

  1114. My interest

  1115. is that he

  1116. was following

  1117. the Lord.

  1118. And after

  1119. questioning him

  1120. several times,

  1121. I said to

  1122. him, I

  1123. will pray

  1124. for him.

  1125. He's in

  1126. ministry today,

  1127. and he's

  1128. pursuing what

  1129. he believes,

  1130. God's will

  1131. is.

  1132. What compiled

  1133. the problem is

  1134. James was a

  1135. secondary school

  1136. maths teacher,

  1137. doing very

  1138. well, and

  1139. was due for

  1140. promotion after

  1141. five days.

  1142. And he came

  1143. and said

  1144. the same

  1145. thing to

  1146. me.

  1147. Well, no

  1148. wonder I've

  1149. lost all my

  1150. hair.

  1151. Didn't make

  1152. the problem

  1153. any easier.

  1154. And I

  1155. said to

  1156. him, I

  1157. don't leave

  1158. him's job

  1159. until he's

  1160. certain that

  1161. he's heard

  1162. not from

  1163. me, but

  1164. from God.

  1165. And James

  1166. currently is

  1167. working in

  1168. duty.

  1169. I link

  1170. the story

  1171. with this,

  1172. you see,

  1173. because it's

  1174. God's will

  1175. is important

  1176. above all

  1177. it's.

  1178. And I

  1179. know Nathan

  1180. is on the

  1181. road, not

  1182. to Damascus,

  1183. but to

  1184. follow the

  1185. Lord.

  1186. And I

  1187. say to you

  1188. with encouragement,

  1189. Nathan,

  1190. hear God's

  1191. voice.

  1192. Steve is

  1193. important, and

  1194. I'm less

  1195. important.

  1196. The God is

  1197. super important.

  1198. He is

  1199. voice.

  1200. I'm going to

  1201. close now

  1202. because I

  1203. feel Steve is

  1204. getting itchy.

  1205. So I'm

  1206. not, I'm

  1207. going to

  1208. finish now.

  1209. How do I

  1210. finish this

  1211. now and

  1212. have

  1213. credibility?

  1214. My

  1215. brothers and

  1216. sisters, as

  1217. we look at

  1218. this psalm,

  1219. there's so

  1220. much in

  1221. the psalm

  1222. that I

  1223. cannot do

  1224. justice.

  1225. So I

  1226. go to,

  1227. as I

  1228. finish now,

  1229. in verse

  1230. 11 and

  1231. 12.

  1232. I would

  1233. like to

  1234. draw your

  1235. attention to

  1236. something that

  1237. I think is

  1238. important as

  1239. we read

  1240. the psalms.

  1241. I want to

  1242. draw your

  1243. attention to

  1244. the fact that

  1245. seven times in

  1246. this psalm,

  1247. David reference

  1248. that it was

  1249. God who was

  1250. at work in

  1251. his life.

  1252. In verse

  1253. 1, you

  1254. lifted me.

  1255. Verse 2, you

  1256. healed me.

  1257. Verse 3, you

  1258. brought me up

  1259. from the realm

  1260. of dead.

  1261. Verse 3b, you

  1262. spread me.

  1263. From going down

  1264. to the pit, you

  1265. spared me.

  1266. 7a, you

  1267. favored me.

  1268. 7b, you

  1269. made my

  1270. royal mountain

  1271. stand.

  1272. 7c, you

  1273. hid your face.

  1274. in this

  1275. reference, and

  1276. I particularly

  1277. wanted to

  1278. reference him

  1279. this evening,

  1280. David was

  1281. bringing

  1282. witness to

  1283. the strong

  1284. and gracious

  1285. hands of

  1286. the Lord,

  1287. working in

  1288. his life

  1289. on his

  1290. behalf to

  1291. bring glory

  1292. to himself.

  1293. That is the

  1294. emphasis of

  1295. the psalm.

  1296. That is what

  1297. Tom is trying

  1298. to say, but

  1299. he's going to

  1300. say something

  1301. else.

  1302. Even God

  1303. chastening and

  1304. discipline was

  1305. an expression

  1306. of God's

  1307. love for

  1308. David.

  1309. And the

  1310. writer to

  1311. the Hebrews

  1312. reminds us

  1313. of this,

  1314. that in our

  1315. struggle against

  1316. sin, you

  1317. have not yet

  1318. resisted to

  1319. the point of

  1320. shedding of

  1321. blood, and

  1322. have yet

  1323. completely

  1324. forgotten his

  1325. word of

  1326. encouragement,

  1327. the emphasis

  1328. that addresses

  1329. you as a

  1330. father, addresses

  1331. his son.

  1332. The word of

  1333. encouragement

  1334. addresses you

  1335. and me, from

  1336. God as a

  1337. father to

  1338. sons and

  1339. daughters.

  1340. And he

  1341. went on to

  1342. say, my

  1343. son, do not

  1344. make light,

  1345. the Lord

  1346. discipline, and

  1347. do not lose

  1348. heart when he

  1349. rebukes you,

  1350. because the

  1351. Lord discipline

  1352. the one he

  1353. loves, and

  1354. he chastens

  1355. everyone he

  1356. accepts as

  1357. his son.

  1358. And so

  1359. please know

  1360. that David

  1361. knew he

  1362. was forgiven,

  1363. he was

  1364. moved from

  1365. the funeral

  1366. mode to

  1367. rejoice in

  1368. his forgiveness.

  1369. He removed

  1370. the sackcloth

  1371. and sadness

  1372. which made

  1373. him sad,

  1374. and everything

  1375. about him in

  1376. scripture in the

  1377. Old Testament,

  1378. we see a

  1379. dramatic change,

  1380. an alteration

  1381. of one life

  1382. was often

  1383. marked by a

  1384. change of

  1385. clothing in the

  1386. Old Testament.

  1387. and be

  1388. calm now.

  1389. We notice

  1390. in this

  1391. psalm of

  1392. twelve verses,

  1393. tanzas, or

  1394. trophies as

  1395. they call it,

  1396. you notice that

  1397. he mentioned

  1398. the Lord nine

  1399. times, and I

  1400. think that is

  1401. significant.

  1402. You notice he

  1403. speaks about

  1404. his Lord in

  1405. verse one,

  1406. Lord my God

  1407. in verse two,

  1408. Lord in verse

  1409. three, Lord in

  1410. verse four,

  1411. Lord in verse

  1412. seven,

  1413. Lord in

  1414. verse eight

  1415. twice, and

  1416. Lord in

  1417. verse ten, and

  1418. Lord my God

  1419. in verse

  1420. twelve.

  1421. Now close now,

  1422. Lord in

  1423. capital represents

  1424. Jehovah in

  1425. the Hebrew, as

  1426. I'm told, is

  1427. interpreted Yahweh,

  1428. the self-existent

  1429. one.

  1430. this is the

  1431. supreme name of

  1432. God, and I

  1433. am told that

  1434. the Jews

  1435. avoided pronouncing

  1436. out of respect

  1437. because of their

  1438. interpretation of

  1439. Leviticus chapter

    Leviticus 14 chapter mention

  1440. 14 and verse

  1441. six, which

  1442. state that anyone

  1443. who uses the

  1444. name of the

  1445. Lord blasphemously

1446. is to be put to

  1447. death.

  1448. Now then, it is

  1449. this understanding,

  1450. understanding, it

  1451. is this

  1452. understanding that

  1453. David is bringing

  1454. to the psalm, that

  1455. the psalm is about

  1456. the Lord.

  1457. It's about him and

  1458. him only.

  1459. This is not what

  1460. Paul is talking

  1461. about in

  1462. Philippians chapter

  1463. 20.

  1464. Therefore God

  1465. exalted him to be

  1466. the highest place

  1467. and gave him a

  1468. name that is above

  1469. every name, that

  1470. of the name of

  1471. Jesus every knee

  1472. should bow, in

  1473. heaven and earth

  1474. and under the

  1475. earth, and every

  1476. tongue confess that

  1477. Jesus Christ is

  1478. Lord to the glory

  1479. of God the

  1480. Father.

  1481. Brothers and

  1482. sisters, as we

  1483. gather around the

  1484. table, this is

  1485. evening.

  1486. It is known in

  1487. scripture that the

  1488. names that we

  1489. describe very

  1490. aspects of God's

  1491. nature in the

  1492. Lord's Supper, but

  1493. supreme, it is

  1494. called Eucharist.

  1495. Many other

  1496. idioms that are

  1497. used, but the

  1498. Lord's Supper.

  1499. It is the Lord's

  1500. Supper.

  1501. He's the one that

  1502. Isaiah saw in

  1503. chapter 6.

  1504. Saw the Lord and

  1505. his train filled

  1506. the temple.

  1507. And you know the

  1508. rest of the

  1509. story.

  1510. He's the one

  1511. David wrote about

  1512. in the Psalms and

  1513. reference nine

  1514. times.

  1515. He's the one who

  1516. Mary Magdalene saw

  1517. and testified to

  1518. the disciples in

  1519. John chapter 20

    John 20 chapter mention

  1520. and verse 18.

  1521. She had seen

  1522. the Lord.

  1523. And he's the

  1524. one who invites

  1525. us to come to

  1526. his table this

  1527. evening and to

  1528. share the bread

  1529. and wine that

  1530. speaks about his

  1531. body and his

  1532. blood.

  1533. May the Lord

  1534. bless us.

  1535. Amen.

  1536. Thank you.
