  1. Welcome to NECF Sermons. Each message here is

  2. designed to uplift and strengthen you in your

  3. walk with God. Don't miss out. Stay with us until

  4. the end for a rewarding experience. Let's dive

  5. right in. Good evening everyone. So welcome to

  6. our midweek service. We're going to continue.

  7. We're going to continue with the teaching. On

  8. Sunday, I think we were about closing and then

  9. we looked at Joshua. And I want us to see, let's

  10. just start, let's just pick it up from there.

  11. And I want us to be reminded that there are times

  12. when the word comes and because we are still

  13. trying to grasp or understand because we can

  14. only act on the word. when we trust and we're

  15. persuaded that this is what the Lord is instructing

  16. us to do. And this is where we're convinced.

  17. And we know that this is what the Lord is instructing

  18. us to do. And it's one thing for us to have something.

  19. And it's another thing for us to exercise that

  20. which we have. And God is helping us. And we're

  21. seeing an example in Joshua's case. And we said,

  22. Joshua 9, we're looking at Joshua 1, 9. Joshua

  23. 1, 9, it says, have I not commanded you? Have

  24. I not commanded you? be strong and of good courage.

  25. I have highly commanded you. And I want you to

  26. see that in Deuteronomy 3, in Deuteronomy 31

    Deuteronomy 31:6

  27. verse 6, Deuteronomy 31 verse 6, we see Moses

    Deuteronomy 31:6

  28. passing the baton to the young man Joshua. He

  29. says, be strong and of good courage. Do not fear,

  30. nor be afraid of them. For the Lord your God,

  31. he is the one who goes with you. He will not

  32. leave you nor forsake you. I want you to just

  33. continue to see how there's a reason why he says

  34. he's the one who goes with you. He's the one

  35. who goes with you. He will not leave you nor

  36. forsake you. And you will see all through scripture

  37. that that is the encouragement that comes to

  38. us when we are instructed not to fear. We're

  39. instructed to be strong. We're instructed to

  40. be of courage. And even in 23, when in 23, we'll

  41. see in 23, that's 31, 23. 31 verse 23. I would

  42. like to read it from the NLT. It says, Then the

  43. Lord commissioned Joshua, son of Nun, with these

  44. words, be strong and courageous. for you must

  45. bring the people of Israel into the land I swore

  46. to give them. I will be with you. He says, you

  47. must bring the children, the people of Israel,

  48. you must bring the people of Israel into the

  49. land I have sworn to give you. And there is a

  50. reason why he must be strong and courageous.

  51. Remember, I told us that it's not something because

  52. there's oppositions that we're going to face.

  53. That is why courage is necessary. Courage is

  54. not an add -on. Courage is not optional. Courage

  55. is necessary for the work. There are people that

  56. need to be saved and you cannot take on that

  57. task without ensuring that being courageous and

  58. being confident and placing your trust in God

  59. to get the work done. That is a necessity for

  60. us to be able to get the work done. And he says,

  61. the people of Israel, he says, the people of

  62. Israel, the land is already theirs. The action

  63. that is needed is Joshua has to take on that

  64. tax and responsibility. He has to be conscious

  65. of the fact that God, as he ends this verse,

  66. I will be, he says, I will, he says, I will be

  67. with you. I will be with you. I will be with

  68. you. And that is the, upon this, he's able to

  69. move. And we go back to the Joshua one. I want

  70. us to see the nine and then see 10. And in that

  71. Joshua 1, I told us that we see it in six, we

  72. see it in seven. Let's just read, let's start

  73. from six, seven, and then we go to six, seven,

  74. and then nine and 10. Six, it says, be strong

  75. and of good courage. For to these people, for

  76. this, to these people, you should, yeah, okay.

  77. For to these people. You shall divide as an inheritance

  78. the land which I swore to their fathers to give

  79. them. 7. Only be strong and very courageous,

  80. that you may observe to do according to all the

  81. law which Moses my servant commanded you. Do

  82. not turn from it to the right hand or to the

  83. left, that you may prosper wherever you go. Just

  84. jump to 9 and then let's do 9 and 10. And then

  85. we said, have I not commanded you? Be strong

  86. and be of good courage. Do not be afraid, nor

  87. be dismayed. For the Lord your God is with you

  88. wherever you go. Then 10, now we see him acting.

  89. It says, then Joshua commanded the officers of

  90. the people saying, 11. That's just the 11. It

  91. says, pass through the camp, command the people

  92. saying, prepare provisions for ourselves. For

  93. within three days you will cross over this Jordan

  94. to go in to possess the land which the Lord your

  95. God has given you to possess. Praise God. We

  96. see him not just hearing the word had come again

  97. and again. And the result is that he acts on

  98. the word. The result of the word, the action

  99. that we see from Joshua is that he takes on that

  100. stance of let's do this. And then they go and

  101. act on the word. God's word has to have a result

  102. in our lives. This has to be a tangible effect.

  103. It doesn't keep us in one place. It gets us to

  104. that place of action. And bravery is a result

  105. of reliance on God's strength because we see

  106. that the reliance on God's strength is what causes

  107. Joshua to say, we can do this because the word

  108. has come again and again. And note that God demands

  109. men to rise up. God demands men to rise up. God

  110. demands you to rise up. God demands me to rise

  111. up. He will keep bringing his word to us. Keep

  112. bringing his word to us. Keep bringing his word

  113. to us. And one very key thing we'll see again

  114. and again as we progress is that God's word comes

  115. to us to encourage us. God's word comes to us

  116. to encourage us. God's word comes to us to dispel

  117. doubt. God's word comes to us to dispel fear.

  118. God's word comes to us for us to rely on him

  119. to get the work done. Joshua is already doing

  120. something that has been instructed because it

  121. is already done. And if you remember, there were

  122. times like in Numbers, back in Numbers, where

  123. they were instructed, the spies, 12 of them were

  124. instructed to go. Notice that 10 of them came

  125. with their own report. Joshua and Caleb came

  126. with a positive report. And it is... You know,

  127. when one, two, three persons have said something,

  128. you know, you might just fall in line because

  129. that's like, who am I? What do I know? If all

  130. these people, 10 of them, have already said,

  131. you just respect yourself and say, yeah, these

  132. people, we cannot take it. But we see that there

  133. was something, we see if God has said it, we

  134. are going for it. Praise God. They are not taking

  135. on what those people are saying, how they see

  136. themselves. And that is what we should always

  137. look to. We should always count on. We should

  138. count on. I said the word strong there means

  139. you're firm. The word strong there means you're

  140. firm. And the word courage, the Hebrew word there

  141. means that you do not yield. You do not yield.

  142. Meaning that no matter what happens, you don't

  143. yield to anything other than the word of God.

  144. The word of God is what we yield to. The word

  145. of God is what we stand by. regardless of what

  146. happens. And the command will keep coming. The

  147. instruction will keep coming. And our response

  148. is that we yield to the word. We yield to the

  149. instruction. Why are we yielding? Because he

  150. has promised, right? Because he says he's there.

  151. He says he's going to be there with us. And we

  152. know that for us now, we know that he is there.

  153. We are not in doubt of God's power, God's presence

  154. in and through our life. And we say that courage

  155. is not detached from God. God's presence with

  156. us is what encourages us. God being with us is

  157. what encourages us. That's what we see every

  158. time he says, I am with you. I am with you. I

  159. am with you. I am with you. That is what stares

  160. away. It's not about your willpower. It's not

  161. about you saying, oh, I can do this. It's not

  162. motivational talk. It's not motivational talk.

  163. It's not about willpower. It's that God has said

  164. it. His presence is with us. And that is why

  165. everywhere we go, we know that he is with us.

  166. And it is his will that is at the forefront.

  167. His will is not at the back. is at the forefront

  168. of our minds. Meaning that we are in that particular

  169. place and we know that I am an ambassador. I

  170. am an ambassador. I am God's instrument in this

  171. place. I am the one that God is going to use

  172. to minister to that person. I'm the one that

  173. God is going to use to minister to him, to minister

  174. to her. I'm the one that God is going to use

  175. in my family to minister to my father, to minister

  176. to my mother. I'm the one that God is going to

  177. use. I'm not waiting for someone else to do it.

  178. Praise God. I'm not waiting for someone else.

  179. Because Joshua can say, Maybe Caleb will do it.

  180. Right? We have instances, and many men will just

  181. resign and say, okay, somebody else will do it.

  182. If I don't do it, God will raise up somebody.

  183. But that is not the stance of someone who knows

  184. that God has placed us in ecstasies for such

  185. a time as this. Praise God. In the book of Esther,

  186. I say for such a time as this, because... Monica

  187. had to tell her that, look, deliverance will

  188. come from somewhere else if you don't rise up.

  189. But she knows that it was not an accident that

  190. she found herself in the palace. So we should

  191. not undermine the fact that God has placed us

  192. strategically in the different places where we

  193. find ourselves. We should just be courageous.

  194. I told us on Sunday that fear is always the cause

  195. for people turning down or going back on the

  196. word. Fear is the threat. to everything, every

  197. instruction of the Lord. And that's why you see

  198. that many times it comes, the word comes, the

  199. word encourages us not to be afraid. The word

  200. encourages us not to be afraid. Praise God. When

  201. the word of the Lord comes, it ensures that fear

  202. is out of the window. Fear is out of the window.

  203. And what happens is that our courage grows from

  204. our confidence in God's word. Our courage grows

  205. from our confidence in God's word. Anytime that

  206. you are feeling like. or you are entertaining

  207. all manner of fears, just know that what is happening

  208. there is your word, your prayer, something is

  209. happening around that department that will result

  210. in that. Anytime you check yourself and you are

  211. seeing that, oh, I'm very fearful, I'm scared,

  212. I'm too scared, I'm always scared, I'm panicking,

  213. I'm all of that, just ask yourself this question,

  214. what are you feeding yourself on? What are you

  215. entertaining? Because there is no way you'll

  216. be entertaining the word of God and the entertaining

  217. fear at the same time. Because God's word comes

  218. to dispel fear. The two cannot be compatible.

  219. And even when you say, okay, sir, I am reading

  220. the word, I'm reading the word, I'm reading the

  221. word. What are you trusting on? Is it the word

  222. or the circumstances around you? Praise God.

  223. Because it's easy for us to look around us and

  224. say, Joshua should look at the people and say,

  225. Kai, these people, they will finish us. Praise

  226. God. It's easy for him to say that. But he chooses

  227. not to because he is trusting, he's relying on

  228. the word of the Lord. I said, we looked at Psalms

  229. a bit, Psalm 27. That Psalm is the Psalm of David.

  230. And David says, the Lord is my light and my salvation.

  231. You know, for you to come to a point where you

  232. say, the Lord is my light and my salvation, you

  233. know him to be your light and salvation. Praise

  234. God. And David is a man that, when you read through,

  235. Kings, Chronicles, you see that he took every

  236. action. He goes to seek God's guidance for every

  237. step and every action he does. That is almost

  238. like his go -to. His default setting is, what

  239. is the Lord saying? What does the Lord want us

  240. to do? What does the Lord want me to do? What

  241. is our stance? He says, the Lord is my light

  242. and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? That's the

  243. question. Whom shall I fear? If the Lord is my

  244. light and salvation, what then am I? Why should

  245. I be scared? He says, the Lord is the strength

  246. of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? Praise

  247. God. He says, the Lord is the strength of my

  248. life. Of whom shall I be afraid? You will say,

  249. oh, if the Lord is the strength of your life,

  250. then you will not be weak, right? But it means

  251. that there is the strength that dispels fear.

  252. There is the strength in the Lord. Note that

  253. there is the strength in the Lord that dispels

  254. fear. Because you can be strong physically. but

  255. weak in the face of fear. Praise God. You can

  256. be strong physically and still weak in the face

  257. of fear. And as I said on Sunday again, in the

  258. end of that chapter, he says, wait on the Lord.

  259. He says, wait on the Lord, be of good courage,

  260. and he shall strengthen your heart. Wait on the

  261. Lord. Wait, I say, on the Lord. He says, and

  262. he shall strengthen your heart. He said, wait

  263. on the Lord. And I encouraged us and I told us,

  264. I said, waiting on the Lord doesn't mean doing

  265. nothing. Waiting on the Lord doesn't mean doing

  266. nothing. Waiting on the Lord means that there

  267. is a posture in this. Waiting on the Lord will

  268. include you putting your trust in him. And putting

  269. your trust in him will mean that you are praying.

  270. Putting your trust in him will mean that you're

  271. reflecting on this word. Putting your trust in

  272. him will mean that you are posting yourself for...

  273. to obey every instruction that he gives. Because

  274. in your waiting, it's not a period of idleness.

  275. It's not the season of, okay, it's not the season

  276. of dryness or just doing nothing. But it's a

  277. season of where you are refined because you are

  278. in the place of praying. And that is the default

  279. setting. And I told us, I said, you're waiting

  280. for something to happen or you're waiting for

  281. graduation. As a student, it doesn't mean that

  282. you're doing nothing. At every step of the way,

  283. there's something that we need to do. And being

  284. courageous demands that you go ahead. You move

  285. forward. You don't stand in one place. You move

  286. forward. You're taking little steps. You are

  287. making the progress. Because even in Trinidad

  288. and Tobago, when they were asked to scout the

  289. land, scouting the land is, they're not yet taking

  290. the land, but they're just doing the scout. Scouting

  291. required work. And even in that, you had some

  292. people saying, we cannot take it. You have some

  293. people saying, we can take it. Praise God. So

  294. it means that at every point in time, you don't

  295. want to entertain any form of fear. You want

  296. to just go into it. You want to do it in the

  297. strength that the Lord supplies. Praise God.

  298. We say bravery. When we see a soldier, we say

  299. this is a brave soldier. This is a valiant soldier.

  300. But when we talk about bravery in our own sense,

  301. it's spiritual. Praise God. It's spiritual because

  302. the... Being brave is a function of our union

  303. with God. It's very different from that kind

  304. of bravery. And we'll get to the point where

  305. we give examples, see the example in our nature.

  306. And it's what God enables us to do. And that

  307. is, it's bravery that will make a person say,

  308. I will not bow down, like the Hebrew boys. It's

  309. bravery that will, that bravery that comes only

  310. from God, that will make them see. the phone

  311. has been hit seven times and not go back on their

  312. word. Because, you know, I was thinking about

  313. it. When somebody has nothing to lose, that person

  314. becomes very dangerous because you don't want

  315. to, you know, there's how, when athletes are

  316. looking, they're trying to gauge, is this person

  317. afraid of something? What is it exactly? And

  318. the moment they find weakness, that's where,

  319. That's where they attack. Right? The moment they

  320. find weakness, that's where they attack. But

  321. we see that these people were not, they were,

  322. there's no threats that could shift their stance.

  323. Praise God. There's no form of threat that could

  324. make them say, oh, let's just change our mind.

  325. As the furnace was being heated, they would see

  326. the furnace and they, you know, you could at

  327. this point say, hmm, self -preservation. Let's

  328. preserve ourselves. is we can fight. But they

  329. were very confident in the fact that, see, look,

  330. even if God doesn't show up, and that is the

  331. mindset we should have as believers. Whatever

  332. thing, whatever idol, whatever form of cultural

  333. pressure, what should be at the forefront of

  334. our minds is, how do I still honor God in the

  335. light of what is going on around me? How do I

  336. still glorify God in the light of what is going

  337. on around me? And we say true bravery is trust.

  338. True bravery is trust. True bravery is trusting

  339. in God, trusting in the one who declares, I am

  340. with you. Trusting in the one who declares, I

  341. am with you. Trusting in the one who declares,

  342. I am with you. And you should have no other one

  343. that you're trusting except this one who declares,

  344. I am with you. And we say being bold, bold obedience

  345. actually flows from, a steady heart that is anchored

  346. on God's character, notice that we always want

  347. to bring attention to the fact that if you have

  348. a wrong understanding of the character of this

  349. God, it will be shaky. Your confidence in him

  350. will be shaky. If you read your Bible and you

  351. still think that God is out to get you, anytime

  352. you're going through a difficult situation, you

  353. think it's him. You will start looking for the

  354. things that you've done wrong that is out to

  355. get you. You start looking for the things that...

  356. But once you know that he says he's with you,

  357. he's not going to turn his back on you because

  358. you did something that you shouldn't have done.

  359. And we say that you are doing it because you

  360. know that this God is faithful. This God is a

  361. God that keeps his words. This is a God that

  362. continues to stand by his word regardless of...

  363. the missteps that we make, regardless of the

  364. challenges that we do have. He stands on his

  365. word. And I want you all to see another example

  366. in Daniel, since we're still in Daniel. I want

  367. us to see Daniel 6. This is Daniel himself. Daniel

  368. 6, I want us to look at 10. We look at 10. Daniel

    Daniel 6:10

  369. 6 verse 10. Daniel 6 verse 10. It says, now when

    Daniel 6:10

  370. Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went

  371. home and in his upper room, with his windows

  372. open toward Jerusalem. He knelt down on his knees

  373. three times that day and prayed and gave thanks

  374. before his God, as was his custom since early

  375. days. As was his custom since early days. I want

  376. us to underline as was his custom since early

  377. days. It means that this Daniel had a custom

  378. of praying, giving thanks. That doesn't shift.

  379. It doesn't shift. That was his custom since early

  380. days. That was his custom since early days. What

  381. I want us to understand is that challenging times

  382. and difficult times is not when you start doing

  383. the disciplines that you should have done way

  384. before. Difficult times or challenging times

  385. is not when you start saying, I'm going to pray

  386. now because I'm going through this. I'm going

  387. to study my Bible more because I think I really

  388. need the Word. now than before. Meaning that

  389. we have to have a routine. We have to have a

  390. lifestyle. We have to have something that is

  391. customary. And this is not just unique to Daniel.

  392. We see it all through scriptures. We see it was

  393. customary for Apostle Paul, customary for Jesus

  394. himself to have a regular time of prayers. And

  395. I know that we say three times that day. So we

  396. don't prepare when it's in the face of danger.

  397. We are prepared. in the face of danger, praise

  398. God. But we don't prepare in the face of danger.

  399. So Daniel did not simply, what Daniel was doing

  400. when he went on to do, by the way, just the background,

  401. these people were trying to get something on

  402. Daniel. They looked for everything that they

  403. could. The only thing they could get on him was

  404. just his prayer. That's the only thing they could

  405. use, they could place their hands on. And that

  406. was why they capitalized on it. And Daniel actually

  407. echoed something that we see in 1 Kings 8. Daniel

  408. actually echoed something we see in 1 Kings 8

  409. because you'll be thinking, why is it important

  410. for him to pray towards Jerusalem? Or why is

  411. it important for him to open the window? He would

  412. have just closed the window and nobody knows

  413. he's praying, right? But we see that because

  414. it's customary, customary means that is something

  415. he does usually. And that is how he did it. And

  416. he didn't want to change it for anything because

  417. that is basically what he does regularly. And

  418. I want us to see 1 Kings 8, 35. What he was doing

  419. here was echoing something that King Solomon

  420. would see in his prayer at the delegation of

  421. the temple. In 35, he says, And when the heavens

  422. are shut up and there is no rain because they

  423. have sinned against you, When they pray towards

  424. this place, and this place is the temple, the

  425. place that they were dedicated temple, and confess

  426. your name and turn from their sin because you

  427. afflict them in 47. Let's jump to 47. 47. I want

  428. us to see why Daniel, so yet when they come to

  429. themselves in the land where they were carried

  430. captive, and we know that Daniel, was a captive

  431. in Babylon at that time, and repent and make

  432. supplications to you in the land of those who

  433. took them captive, saying, We have sinned and

  434. done wrong. We have committed wickedness. 48.

  435. And when they turn to you with all their heart

  436. and with all their soul in the land of their

  437. enemies, who led them away captive? and pray

  438. to you towards the land which you gave to their

  439. fathers, the city which you have chosen, and

  440. the temple which I have built for your name.

  441. So notice that Solomon here is praying and then

  442. is saying that there be a prayer, that there

  443. be a repentance and a prayer, and praying towards

  444. the temple is... how they are able to, that's

  445. the posture, that's the stance, that's what will

  446. ensure that they are able to, and that's basically

  447. what he's going by. That Daniel is going by this

  448. prayer of Solomon, he's going by this. And we

  449. see other instances, even with David. David in

  450. Psalms 55 verse 17, David in Psalms 55 verse

    Psalms 55:17 Psalms 55:17

  451. 17, talks about evening and morning and noon,

  452. he will pray and cry to the Lord and he will

  453. hear his cry. And notice that he says morning,

  454. evening. morning and at noon. And all of this

  455. will just be, all of this at times of the day

  456. is not like three times a day. It's just pointing

  457. to the importance of prayer and the discipline

  458. of prayer and then also suggesting, most importantly,

  459. the fact that you can wholly depend on God to

  460. hear you when you cry. You can wholly depend

  461. on God to hear you when you cry. And that's basically

  462. what Daniel is illustrating in that his posture.

  463. And it means that what, A consistent life of

  464. prayer naturally will cause us to express or

  465. manifest supernatural boldness. A consistent

  466. life of prayer will cause us to always naturally

  467. express that supernatural life of boldness. Because

  468. once a person is confident, he's wholly dependent

  469. on God, because your prayer is a function of

  470. your dependence on God. You going to pray is

  471. you saying, Lord, I depend on you. I'm giving

  472. thanks. I'm giving thanks to you because I know

  473. that everything I have, everything I am, everything

  474. I own is you, is your doing, is of your doing.

  475. And the encouragement of the scripture on death

  476. is the person is honoring God's word by placing

  477. themselves in that posture or placing themselves

  478. in that stance. And we see Daniel not regarding

  479. man, but rather honoring God in his stance to

  480. pray. Not regarding man, but honoring God in

  481. his stance to pray. And we see time and time

  482. again when men honor God in their stance. There

  483. is always deliverance. We see it as a pattern.

  484. When men honor God, take their stance and say,

  485. I choose to trust you. I choose to walk in your

  486. ways. We see that what happens is deliverance.

  487. And for Daniel, we saw that in lions, then the

  488. lions could not, God shut them out of the lions

  489. on his regard. And I want us to still see that

  490. this courage or this boldness we're talking about,

  491. we said, and we'll repeat again, is supernatural.

  492. It's supernatural. It doesn't come by a... natural

  493. means. It's not a function of your temperament.

  494. It's not a function of your temperament. You

  495. just say, I'm naturally a courageous person.

  496. I'm a courageous person, so I'm always courageous.

  497. It's not a function of our temperament. It's

  498. not a function if somebody says, I'm not that

  499. courageous. I'm just a very shy person. I can't

  500. do this. And I want us to see an example in the

  501. life of Peter. I want us to start from his low

  502. point. I want us to start from his low point

  503. and then build up to it because we'll later see

  504. him addressing the children of Israel. We'll

  505. see him addressing the people with Sahandrin.

  506. We'll see him addressing all of this. But let's

  507. start at his low point. Let's look at Luke 22,

  508. 54 to 62. Let's see if we can run through. We

  509. just see Peter at the fire. So Luke 22, 54. Having

  510. arrested him, they led him and brought him into

  511. the high priest's house. But Peter followed at

  512. a distance. 55. Now when they had kindled a fire

  513. in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together,

  514. Peter sat among them. And a certain servant girl,

  515. seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently

  516. at him and said, this man was also with him.

  517. And he denied, but he denied, but he denied him

  518. saying, that's he denied Jesus saying, woman,

  519. I don't know him. I do not know him. And after

  520. a little while, another saw him and said, you

  521. also, you also are of them. But Peter said, man,

  522. I am not. 59. Then after about an hour had passed,

  523. another confidently affirmed, saying, Surely

  524. this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.

  525. 60. Says, But Peter said, Man, I do not know

  526. what you are saying. Immediately, while he was

  527. still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord

  528. turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered

  529. the word of the Lord, how he had said to him,

  530. before the rooster crows, he will deny me three

  531. times. 62. So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

  532. 63. Okay. So 62, that's where we stop. So we

  533. see that Peter had denied and we said, All this

  534. had happened afterwards while back in the garden,

  535. Peter had pulled out a sword. Peter has pulled

  536. out a sword, boldly pulled out, because for you

  537. to pull out a sword against someone, slice off

  538. somebody's ears, that requires a bit of bravery.

  539. But we say that that's of a physical sort, right?

  540. That's the one that comes naturally. But we see

  541. that in the face of just, okay, because you're

  542. like... See, I don't know the man. First time

  543. would have been a mistake. Second time, maybe

  544. somebody else was pointed at. Third time. And

  545. I want us to even look at it in Matthew. Matthew's

  546. account. Matthew 26. Matthew 26, 72. From the

  547. NLT. Matthew 26, 72. Matthew 26, 72 from the

  548. NLT. Again. Peter denied it, this time with an

  549. oath. I don't even know the man, he said. 73.

  550. A little later, some of the other bystanders

  551. came over to Peter and said, you must be one

  552. of them. We can tell by your Galilean accent.

  553. So something was giving him off. Peter swore

  554. a curse on me if I'm lying. I don't know the

  555. man. And immediately the rooster crowed, I can

  556. imagine. Immediately the rooster crowed 75. Suddenly

  557. Jesus' words flashed through Peter's mind. Before

  558. the rooster crows, you will deny three times

  559. that you even know me. And he went away weeping

  560. bitterly. So this one, Matthew tells us that

  561. it was just to just... sound to just make the

  562. person believe that he doesn't really know. He

  563. had to add a bit of swearing to it to just confirm

  564. that, see, I'm not the person. If I'm swearing

  565. like this, I'm not the person. And you can look

  566. at it and think to yourself, when you are depending

  567. on your strength, you're depending on your ability

  568. to be able to do God's work, you will get to

  569. points like this. Notice that when Jesus Christ

  570. speaking to Peter told him that he would deny

  571. him. You know, when you're thinking, oh, how

  572. can I? How can I? You're not thinking of the

  573. fact that there is a possibility for that to

  574. happen. You're thinking that, no, there's no

  575. way. Because in your mind, things will always

  576. be like this. Things will always be like when

  577. we gather like this. There's going to be a time

  578. where you go out. And then you are in a place

  579. where you're like, what do you believe in? Right?

  580. And you have instance, you know, the Lord loves

  581. everybody. He loves everybody. Like you can come

  582. to him, like any way, any path is a path that

  583. leads to him. Just to make everybody, just to

  584. accommodate everybody. But that will not be the

  585. truth because you know better than that, that

  586. Christ is the way, Christ is the only way, right?

  587. Christ is the only way to the Father. And we

  588. see that in, In John, like John 18 verse 10,

    John 18:10

  589. John 18 verse 10, where John 18 verse 10, it

    John 18:10 John 18:10

  590. says, and Simon Peter drew a sword and sliced

  591. off, if you can, then Peter said, having a sword,

  592. he drew it and struck the high priest's servants

  593. and cut off his ear. And the servant's name was

  594. Malchus. And I want you to see that I think John

  595. just gives us details. John just gives us details.

  596. Every other person that wrote this account just

  597. didn't disclose that Peter was the person that

  598. did it. And it's important for us to see that

  599. in that height, in the height of what was going

  600. on, his action, his willingness to defend and

  601. his willingness to, he just did the first thing

  602. that he could do. It is, okay, we had a sword.

  603. Initially when Jesus Christ was telling him,

  604. okay, go, he got the sword and then he put the

  605. sword to use. What we see, Jesus' action, even

  606. in that light, it was, he picked the ear of the

  607. person and there was healing. But what is most

  608. importantly is we contrast the character of Peter

  609. at this point and Peter next to the fire. You're

  610. looking at the person here and looking at the

  611. person there, you think it should be two different

  612. persons because one person is denying him, the

  613. other person is willing to defend him. Praise

  614. God. The other person is willing to defend him

  615. and you might say, okay, it was in the garden,

  616. it was dark. There was fire there. You could

  617. see him. So note that physical bravery is not

  618. what we're talking about when we're talking about

  619. supernatural bravery. Physical bravery, physical

  620. being, physically brave, pulling out a sword

  621. is not what we're talking about. Because you

  622. can have the spiritual and you can have the physical.

  623. Because your physical translated. Remember we

  624. said that. Once there's supernatural bravery

  625. or supernatural boldness, you are able to speak

  626. up. You are able to speak up. You're not silent.

  627. Supernatural bravery or supernatural boldness,

  628. you don't keep silent. And we'll see that as

  629. we progress. We'll see that Peter was able to

  630. stand before the Sanhedrin. Peter was able to

  631. stand before the children of Israel and boldly

  632. declare the word. We'll see that in Acts 2 .14.

  633. We see that in Acts 2 .14. I want us to read

  634. this from the NLT. Acts 2 .14. Then Peter, stepping

  635. forward with the 11 other apostles, shouted to

  636. the crowd, Listen carefully, all of you, fellow

  637. Jews and residents of Jerusalem. Make no mistake

  638. about this. Make no mistake about this. You can

  639. hear from his words. You can hear from his words

  640. that this person is persuaded. about what they

  641. are communicating. And note that it's the same

  642. person he denied his defending here to the Jews.

  643. Praise God. The same person he denied his defending

  644. here to the Jews. And what the result of all

  645. of this is 3 ,000 persons and more believed.

  646. Praise God. About 3 ,000 persons believed. And

  647. we see in Acts 3 .12, Acts 3 .12, Acts 3 .12,

  648. Peter saw this opportunity and addressed. the

  649. crowd, that was just after the man that was at

  650. the beautiful gate. People of Israel, he said,

  651. what is so surprising about this? And why stare

  652. at us as do we have made this man walk by our

  653. own power or godliness? And we will see as we

  654. progress that in Acts 4 .4, that about... 5 ,000

  655. also believed at the teaching or the preaching.

  656. But many of the people who heard the message

  657. believed it. So the number of believers now totaled

  658. about 5 ,000, not counting women and children.

  659. Praise God. So there's something about not looking

  660. at ourselves or thinking about, okay, we're convincing

  661. ourselves, okay, I can do it. Many of us, when

  662. we are faced with a situation where we are, to

  663. open our mouth and be bold. We look at ourselves,

  664. we say, I don't think I'm cut out for this. I

  665. don't think I can do this. I see how the sister

  666. does it graciously. I see how this brother does

  667. it graciously. I don't think I'm able to do it

  668. because we are looking at ourselves. We're looking

  669. at our ability. We're looking, we're trying to,

  670. and we're not really convinced that we're able

  671. to do it. And that's where there's a thing, there's

  672. a place of where you are confident in God's word.

  673. There's a place of where... You're trained. There's

  674. a place of where you understand what you're doing.

  675. There's a place of even where people don't necessarily,

  676. the woman or the whale, there's a place where

  677. you don't need to have it together or it's good.

  678. You just need to be persuaded that the person

  679. you saw is the Messiah or the person that you

  680. have a relationship with is the Messiah. So the

  681. challenge is stop looking at yourself, right?

  682. Stop looking at yourself. Stop looking at what

  683. you know. Stop looking at yourself. Stop looking

  684. at what you know. But look at the one who is

  685. with you, right? Look at the one who is with

  686. you, the one who has promised. So boldness is

  687. an expression of supernatural bravery and it

  688. comes out in words, through our speakings. It

  689. comes out in words. It's an expression of supernatural

  690. bravery in words and through our speaking. It

  691. comes out in words. And we say the outward working

  692. of faith in our lives is boldness. how you know

  693. or how you can see faith at work in your life

  694. is in your speaking. Because if you have faith,

  695. you will speak. Praise God. If you have faith,

  696. you will speak. We've been taught that again

  697. and again. And we see in Ephesians 6, verse 19

    Ephesians 6:19–20

  698. to 20, as Apostle Paul was reminding us, he says,

  699. for me, he says, pray for me, that all trans

  700. may be given to me. All trans may be given to

  701. me that... I may open my mouth boldly to make

  702. known the mystery of the gospel, for which I

  703. am an ambassador in chains, that in it I may

  704. speak boldly as I ought to speak. I may speak

  705. boldly as I ought to speak. So we see here, utterance

  706. may be given to me, that I may open my mouth

  707. boldly, boldly, boldly to make known. Notice

  708. that the boldness there is to make known. To

  709. make known what? The mystery of the gospel. And

  710. he says, he continues, an ambassador in chains,

  711. telling it that I may speak boldly as I ought

  712. to speak. I may speak boldly as I ought to speak.

  713. The Greek word there is P -A -R -R -E -S -I -A.

  714. P -A -R -R -E -S -I -A. It means speaking plainly

  715. without reservation, public declaration, speaking

  716. boldly without reservation, public declaration.

  717. And even the other boldly there is perissia somae.

  718. It's similar, but it has the somae, which means

  719. to speak freely, to grow confident with boldness,

  720. to speak freely, to grow confident with boldness.

  721. Second boldly there. It's the same spelling.

  722. P -A -R -R -E -S -I -A. Then Z -O -M -A -I. Z

  723. -O -M -A -I. The first one without the Z -O -M

  724. -A -I. The second one is with the Z -O -M -A

  725. -I at the end. So it means that believers, boldness

  726. is supernatural and is in words. And Apostle

  727. Paul clearly... He's demanding that he's able

  728. to, because that is necessary for the work, that

  729. the utterance that he has is for declaring the

  730. gospel. The utterance that he has is for declaring

  731. the gospel. And even in our lives, we want to

  732. boldly declare the things that we are. Praise

  733. God. We want to boldly declare the things that

  734. we are. As David says, the Lord is my light and

  735. my salvation. You are to declare with confidence

  736. and with persuasion that I am a child of God,

  737. that I cannot be moved. I'm not afraid. I trust

  738. the Lord. The word of the Lord through me is

  739. mighty. The word of the Lord through me is mighty.

  740. I am alive and well. I am not sick. I will heal

  741. the sick. I will raise the dead. You want to

  742. be able to declare God's word with that level

  743. of persuasion. And basically what we do when

  744. we do affirmations is that we affirm God's word.

  745. Praise God. We affirm God's word. And we're affirming

  746. God's word and saying, through me, the Lord is

  747. winning billions of souls. Through me. And how

  748. would that happen? It's by me opening my mouth

  749. with boldness and declaring the gospel. Praise

  750. God. And declaring the gospel. And we see men

  751. and women doing the same. And all of them are

  752. an example to us. If these men and women are

  753. able to take a stand for this same thing that

  754. we're taking a stand for, and we can see the

  755. result. How much more? We. Praise God. In this

  756. day and age, we look around us, there are people

  757. that need to hear the gospel. Praise God. And

  758. our challenge is to be bold enough, to be brave

  759. enough, to be courageous enough to declare it

  760. without fear. Praise God. Declare without fear

  761. because you are God's hands and feet. You are

  762. his mouthpiece. You are opening your mouth and

  763. being an instrument through which God will use

  764. to deliver that person. Praise God. And in Acts

  765. 2, In Acts 2 .29, we'll see examples of boldness.

  766. In Acts 2 .29, it says, Men and brethren, let

  767. me speak freely. The freely there is the parousia.

  768. Freely. To you of the Petrarch David, that he

  769. is both dead and buried, and in his tomb with

  770. us to this day. He says, let me speak freely.

  771. And he goes on and on and on and on. And Peter's

  772. confidence isn't in his, it's not his personality.

  773. He's confident that his spirit empowered and

  774. is anchored on his certainty because he's certain

  775. of what he's saying. He says, let me speak freely.

  776. Let me speak boldly. Let me speak to you of the

  777. patriarch David. Let me speak to you of this

  778. man. Let me speak to you of this man. And we

  779. see in Acts 4, 13. I love the example in Acts

  780. 4, 13. It says, now when they saw the boldness

  781. of Peter and John, and perceived that they were

  782. uneducated and untrained men. They marveled.

  783. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.

  784. Praise God. They say they saw the boldness, that

  785. is the paresia, of Peter and John and perceived

  786. that they were uneducated. So it's not even a

  787. function of the normal education that you have.

  788. It's a function of the fact that you have. You

  789. have an encounter, you are saved, you have a

  790. union with him and you are grounded on the word

  791. because you have been hearing God's word. All

  792. the things that you've been hearing, what you're

  793. doing is that you are allowing God to use what

  794. you've learned to bless the other person. Praise

  795. God. You are doing it. And for many of us, we

  796. feel that we have not gotten enough. Same as

  797. Joshua. Joshua felt that, okay, I still have

  798. a lot of training to do. I still feel like I'm

  799. not ready to. And in fact, we even see, Instance

  800. that I think can just bring us back to Corinthians.

  801. In the first Corinthians 16 verse 10. First Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 16:10 1 Corinthians 16:10

  802. 16 verse 10. It says, when Timothy comes, don't

  803. intimidate him. I'm reading from the NLT. When

  804. Timothy comes, don't intimidate him. He's doing

  805. the Lord's work, just as I am. It says, don't

  806. let anyone treat him with contempt. Send him

  807. on his way with your blessings when he returns.

  808. to me. I expect him to come with the other believers,

  809. praise God. Meaning that he's charging the Corinthian

  810. church, don't intimidate the young man. Don't

  811. intimidate the young man. Don't, don't, like

  812. he's doing the Lord's work, praise God, just

  813. as Apostle Paul. And Apostle Paul is pushing

  814. him forward. Meaning that he's cheering him on,

  815. he's trying to, because you can have instances

  816. where you, people play, like, Things can come

  817. at you, right? People can intimidate you, praise

  818. God. But you don't get intimidated. You don't

  819. get intimidated. You don't allow anyone to intimidate

  820. you. He says, you are uneducated and untrained,

  821. and they marveled. And then they realized this

  822. one thing, that they had been with Jesus. 29

  823. now says, now look on their threatens. That is

  824. Acts 4, 29. Acts 4 .29. Say, Now, Lord, look

  825. on their threats and grant your servant that

  826. with all boldness that they may speak your word.

  827. With all boldness. That boldness there is the

  828. same word. And then 31. It says, And when they

  829. prayed, the place where they assembled together

  830. was shaken, and they were all filled with the

  831. Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with

  832. boldness. Praise God. They were threatened not

  833. to. And these people prayed and the place was

  834. shaken and they continued. Praise God. They continued

  835. to preach the word, meaning that no matter what

  836. threats, no matter what exactly it is that comes

  837. at you, you should not allow it to put you down.

  838. Praise God. You should not allow it to put you

  839. down. You should continue to do the work of the

  840. one who has called you because the one who has

  841. called you is greater. Praise God. The one who

  842. has called you is greater. Then Acts 28 .31.

  843. Acts 28 .31. It says, Preaching the kingdom of

  844. God and teaching the things which concerns the

  845. Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence. No one

  846. forbidding him. That's Apostle Paul. No one forbidding

  847. him with all confidence. Confidence there is

  848. heresia. No one forbidding him. So he kept on

  849. doing that. That's the end of the 28th. He kept

  850. on doing that. Preaching the kingdom of God.

  851. Teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus

  852. Christ. No one forbidding him. And then. Lastly,

  853. Ephesians 3 verse 12. That's Ephesians 3 verse

    Ephesians 3:12 Ephesians 3:12

  854. 12. It says, In whom we have boldness and access

  855. with confidence through faith in him. In whom.

  856. That's Christ Jesus. In whom we have boldness.

  857. In whom we have boldness. It's in him that we

  858. have boldness, access, and confidence in faith.

  859. Our boldness is not in our strength. It's not

  860. in our might. Our boldness and our confidence

  861. is in what? It's the word and the strength that

  862. the Lord supplies. Praise God. And as I said

  863. on Sunday in passing, our confidence is contagious.

  864. Our confidence is contagious. And I want to read

  865. to us the quote. It says, courage is contagious.

  866. When a brave man or woman takes a stand, the

  867. spines of others are often stiffened. The spines

  868. of others are often stiffened. Stephen. And we

  869. see this in the life of Apostle Paul in Philippians

    Philippians 1:14

  870. 1 verse 14, as we read during the time of prayer.

  871. I said that on Sunday, that people saw what Apostle

  872. Paul was going through. And the scripture says,

  873. and most of the brethren in the Lord, having

  874. become confident by my change, are more I'm much

  875. more bold to speak the word without fear. That

  876. without fear there is boldly. That without fear

  877. there is boldly. Without fear is aphobos. It's

  878. not fear, no fear. And then no fear means that

  879. you are bold. Because once you remove fear from

  880. the equation, boldness is basically what is expressed.

  881. So they are able to speak boldly. They're able

  882. to speak. boldly and i want us to see matthew

  883. i want us to see peter again i want to see matthew

  884. 14 27 and i want us to read it from the amplified

  885. matthew matthew 14 27 and he says but immediately

  886. he spoke to them saying take courage it is i

  887. do not be afraid take courage this i Do not be

  888. afraid. And just a background. The disciples

  889. were in the boat and then Jesus Christ was walking

  890. on water and they thought it was a ghost. And

  891. immediately he spoke to them, he says, but immediately

  892. he spoke to them saying, take courage. It is

  893. I, do not be afraid. Take courage, it is I, do

  894. not be afraid. That take courage there, you'll

  895. see it as in some translation as take heart.

  896. You see it as in some translation, take heart,

  897. be of good cheer. And we have several passages

  898. of scripture that has the same. Take courage

  899. is a word to mean be of good courage or be of

  900. good cheer. The word is be of good courage, be

  901. of good cheer. And he says it is I. Remember

  902. when we talk about when he says, be strong, be

  903. courageous, and then tells you I am with you,

  904. right? And then he says, do not be afraid. We

  905. see that it's the same pattern where you are

  906. reminded of the fact that God is with you, and

  907. that's the reason why you should not be afraid.

  908. Praise God. Because God is with you, that's the

  909. reason why we're afraid. And that word in a sense

  910. means that you should radiate confidence. You

  911. should be confident. You should be confident.

  912. Remember when we said be confident means that

  913. you are expressing or you're manifesting that

  914. which you have by virtue of your union with God.

  915. Because you have a relationship with him, because

  916. he is with you, you are confident. You're not

  917. manufacturing it, praise God. You're just manifesting

  918. that which you have. And it goes beyond human

  919. bravery. It's an assurance that you have and

  920. a peace that you have because of your faith in

  921. God. Because you have faith in God, you have

  922. that assurance that you are safe. Praise God.

  923. You have that assurance that you are safe. And

  924. the moment that kicks in, we see an action in

  925. the life of Peter. The moment, you know, all

  926. of them are in the boat. And that's the thing

  927. of how we can be here, but there can be a situation

  928. that demands people's... to act. And what happens

  929. is that somebody will, without thinking, and

  930. I can imagine, I can imagine what would have

  931. happened because going by how Peter is, he will

  932. act and then it's almost like he thinks about

  933. it later. And notice that he makes a request

  934. in 28. He makes a request in 28. Peter answered

  935. and said, just put it in New King James, in 28.

  936. Peter answered him saying, and said, Lord, if

  937. it is you, command me to come to you on the water.

  938. If it is you, command me to come to you on the

  939. water. And you will just be thinking to yourself,

  940. like, it's scary enough that you thought it was

  941. a ghost, right? It's scary enough that you thought

  942. it was a ghost. And then now, because now you

  943. believe it is him, your next response is, yeah.

  944. I would like to walk with you on the water. I

  945. would like to experience. I want to see what

  946. the view is. Praise God. I'd like to see what

  947. the view is. And that takes a level of confidence.

  948. Like you are persuaded. I see because it is him.

  949. I can do likewise. Praise God. And I want you

  950. to see it like this. Because God's word says

  951. so. I want to see it. in my life. Praise God.

  952. Because God's word says so, I want to see that

  953. same thing manifested through me. I'm not okay

  954. with me seeing it around me, right? I'm not okay

  955. with me seeing, just looking at him walk on water.

  956. I want to see that I'm able to do likewise. Praise

  957. God. And that is the boldness, that is the confidence,

  958. that's the courage in action. That's the courage

  959. in action. So it's not just Peter looking at

  960. it and admiring it, but it took him a lot to

  961. go ahead and say it. And I can imagine that when

  962. he has said, okay, Jesus Christ bids him come,

  963. and then he starts walking, and then the storms

  964. come, right? The storms come, and then you see

  965. fear being entertained, and then you see all

  966. of that happening. But I want you to pick on

  967. something very beautiful, There's no limit to

  968. what you can do once you rely on, you trust God.

  969. There's no limit to what you can do when your

  970. confidence is in his instruction. Because he's

  971. given that instruction. You say, if it is you,

  972. bid me to come. Praise God. And God's word is

  973. saying that without, from where we started, because

  974. he heard the word, because he believed that it

  975. was him, because he had put the full weight on

  976. God, he now says, and then God instructs him,

  977. he didn't stay in the boat. He still acted on

  978. the word and he came out of the boat. And he

  979. was able to walk. Praise God. He was able to

  980. walk. And you can just think of it like, how

  981. am I going to do this? How am I going to do this?

  982. how will God help me get this done? There are

  983. two things, two different things. How am I going

  984. to do this? And how will God help me do this?

  985. There are two different mindsets. There are two

  986. different, there are two different approach to

  987. the same challenge. You want to get this thing

  988. done. You want, one person wants to do it by

  989. their self. The other person wants to do it.

  990. And sometimes we can even say it spiritually,

  991. just spiritualize and say, how am I going to

  992. do this with God's help? But what you're... saying

  993. in essence is, how am I going to do this by my

  994. own strength? Praise God. But we see Peter walking

  995. on that water and even when he was sinking, he

  996. still cried out, save me. Praise God. He still

  997. cried out, save me. So I want to challenge you

  998. in closing. What is that fear that is holding

  999. you back from sharing the gospel? What is that

1000. fear that is denying someone an opportunity of

1001. being saved? What is that fear that you have?

1002. that's denying someone an opportunity of being

1003. saved? What's that fear that keeps you silent

1004. when you should be speaking? What is that fear

1005. that keeps you silent when you should be speaking?

1006. What is that fear? Because you, and then you

1007. just keep, you reject. You know, like Peter,

1008. you might just be, because you just, because

1009. you're scared. of what can happen, what people

1010. will do to you. You can just be silent or you

1011. can deny him. You can just keep running. Some

1012. people, they just know how to run. When there's

1013. anything that they don't understand, they just

1014. keep running, just keep running. I want you to

1015. understand that you can genuinely cry out to

1016. the Lord for boldness. You can genuinely cry

1017. out to the Lord for boldness and boldness will

1018. find expression in and through you. Boldness

1019. will find expression in you. So I want us to

1020. pray because in Acts we see that the people wanted

1021. to honor God rather than men. They wanted to

1022. honor God rather than men. And what they decided

1023. to do is that rather than we be cowards, rather

1024. than we be cowards, we would rather pray and

1025. then continue doing. I can imagine how they were

1026. supernaturally delivered from prison and they

1027. went back to what they were. arrested for. They

1028. went back to what they were arrested for. And

1029. whatever it is that is that fear, you want to

1030. pray that courage will continue to find expression

1031. in and through your life, courage will continue

1032. to find expression in and through my life, courage

1033. will continue to be my stance with regards to

1034. what God's will is for my life. And that courage

1035. is able to make ordinary men and women be, regardless

1036. of what the challenging situation is, where they

1037. put no fear. above the work of God. They put

1038. no fear above what God's responsibility, what

1039. the responsibility God has called them to. They

1040. put no fear. They put no fear. And they continue

1041. to declare that we'll continue to work. We'll

1042. continue to stand fast in faith. We'll continue

1043. to be brave for the work. We'll continue to be

1044. strong in the Lord. We'll continue to be steadfast.

1045. We'll continue to be immovable. We'll continue

1046. to abound in the work. We'll continue to abound

1047. in the work. We'll let nothing. We will let nothing

1048. stop us. We will let nothing hold us back. We

1049. will let nothing deny us the great privilege

1050. of the work that God has called us to. Because

1051. what he has called us to is great and requires

1052. great faith, great confidence, great boldness

1053. to do the work. And we will continue. We will

1054. not cower. We will not say no. We will continue

1055. to stand. We will continue to stand. We will

1056. continue to stand. We will continue to stand.

1057. And it's not about how we feel. It's about what

1058. he has said. And fear can be crippling. But we

1059. will continue to trust in the Lord. We will continue

1060. to trust in the Lord. We will be the ones who

1061. dare. Who dare to say, I will walk on the water.

1062. I will walk on the water. Because you have said

1063. so, I will do it. Because you said I can heal

1064. the sick, I will. put myself in that position.

1065. I will not pass out on an opportunity to do so.

1066. Even if it scares me, even if I'm afraid, even

1067. if I'm afraid, but I choose to, I will choose

1068. to trust you and allow the light of your word

1069. dispel every fear and any fear in me. I will

1070. not let anything hold me back. We appreciate

1071. you being here today. We hope you carry this

1072. word with you throughout your week. Don't forget
