  1. Welcome to NECF Sermons. Each message here is

  2. designed to uplift and strengthen you in your

  3. walk with God. Don't miss out. Stay with us until

  4. the end for a rewarding experience. Let's dive

  5. right in. authority in the name of Jesus, right?

  6. So this is just going to be part of it, right?

  7. So what we are looking at today is the walk and

  8. the work in the spirit, right? That is believers'

  9. responsibility and their conduct, right? In the

  10. spirit. That is what we are going to look at.

  11. Or we can call it. Life in the spirit. Life in

  12. the spirit. Alright. So turn with me to the book

  13. of. Matthew chapter 28. From verses 18. Matthew

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  14. 28. From verses 18. So one of the. The focal

  15. point of this teaching is we're exploring realities

  16. that every believer must carry. That is, the

  17. first one is the walk. That is how we live. And

  18. the work, which is what we are called to do.

  19. And both of them are as a result of discipleship.

  20. I believe, Marcel, Ifania has also taken us through

  21. this route. So it's just going to be something

  22. we're going to move out very quick. Matthew 28.

  23. From verses 18 to 20. And Lord, I am with you

  24. always, even unto the end of the age. One of

  25. the instructions we see here Jesus giving to

  26. the disciples is that they should go and teach.

  27. They should go and teach, which is to disciple.

  28. It means to disciple and to train. It means to

  29. disciple and to train. Another thing we saw there

  30. is that he says, go and teach them to observe.

  31. All things whatsoever I have commanded thee.

  32. Right. Whatsoever I have commanded thee. That

  33. means there was an instruction that was given

  34. to the disciples. Right. On how they were to

  35. carry out this work of ministry, which is making

  36. disciples. So, one thing we are going to look

  37. at is what discipleship really means. So, discipleship

  38. is not a passive word. or passive attendance

  39. that I'm just attending church or I'm attending

  40. services passively. No. If you look at the instruction

  41. in Matthew chapter 28, just put it up. From verses

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  42. 19, just put 19. It says, Go therefore and teach

  43. all nations, baptizing them in the name of the

  44. Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching

  45. them to observe all things that whatsoever I've

  46. commanded you. And lo, I am with you always,

  47. even unto the end of the age. So, you see that

  48. there were activities also that was happening

  49. to the disciples when they were sent. That is,

  50. they were to preach, they were to rise disciples.

  51. Why? Because whatsoever has happened to them,

  52. they were to replicate it also to other people.

  53. Alright? So, One thing we see there is that the

  54. disciple, who is the disciple? The disciple is

  55. the learner. Pastor Ifanyi has spoken about this.

  56. So one thing that happens is that there is a

  57. learner. There is a training that is happening,

  58. right? And how are they training them? That is,

  59. they are instilling doctrine in them, right?

  60. To instill doctrine in them. That is, they are

  61. explaining, they are expounding a thing. They

  62. are imparting instruction. And this, how are

  63. they doing it? You see in Luke chapter 24, we

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  64. see a pattern. Luke chapter 24, let's just go

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  65. there quickly. Luke chapter 24 from verses 25.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  66. We see a pattern. It says, and to enter into

  67. his glory. And beginning at Moses and all the

  68. prophets, he expounded unto them the things,

  69. expounded unto them in all the scriptures the

  70. things concerning himself. Right? Verse 5. Verse

  71. 4. It says, And he said unto them, These are

  72. the words which I spoke unto you while I was

  73. yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled

  74. which were written in the law of Moses and the

  75. prophets and in the Psalms concerning me. And

  76. then opened he their understanding that they

  77. might understand the scriptures. So, When the

  78. apostles are going to preach the word of God,

  79. what are they talking about? That is the sufferings

  80. of Christ and the glory that followed. That is

  81. the gospel. That is what they are teaching the

  82. believers about. So, there is not only, one thing

  83. also we are going to note is that there is not

  84. only teaching that is happening, right? There

  85. is also A component of it that they are going

  86. to practice, right? What they were taught. We

  87. are going to look at something that during Jesus,

  88. when Jesus was with his disciples, one thing

  89. that happens that you teach them, after he teaches

  90. them, he sends them forth. They come back. If

  91. there is anything that goes wrong, he corrects

  92. them. Then he sends them back again. So it wasn't

  93. a passive learning only, but it was followed

  94. with practical things. There were activities,

  95. right? Let's open Matthew chapter 14. Let's start

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  96. with Matthew 10, sorry. Then we'll go to 14.

  97. Matthew 10. You see Jesus sending forth his disciples

  98. to preach, which is part of the training. Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  99. chapter 10. From verses 1 it says, And when he

  100. had called unto him his twelve disciples, he

  101. gave them power against unclean spirits to cast

  102. them out. and to heal all manner of sickness

  103. and all manner of disease. Then let's jump to

  104. verse 5. It says, The kingdom of heaven is at

  105. hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, rise

  106. the dead, cast out devils. Freely you have received,

  107. freely give. So he told them, prior to this,

  108. the disciples were moving around with the Lord

  109. Jesus Christ. So they saw him preach. They saw

  110. him cast out demons. That is, they learned by

  111. precept and also by, Jesus taught them by precept

  112. and by example. They observed the life of Jesus.

  113. Now Jesus is sending them to do the same thing.

  114. They were to preach, they were to cast out demons,

  115. they were to heal. So, discipleship is not only

  116. coming to the church, sit, learn, and go. No.

  117. The activities that come in, we go out for evangelism.

  118. During catatismus, we minister one to another.

  119. We speak in tongues, we interpret tongues. We

  120. are taught that. We are taught how to flow in

  121. the spirit, with the spirit, right? Then we minister

  122. one to another. We edify one another. That's

  123. practical discipleship. That is active learning

  124. also. So we're going to look at another instance

  125. also. So the first one, Jesus sent the disciples

  126. to preach. The second one is Matthew chapter

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  127. 14. Matthew 14. Just four scriptures from 10.

  128. Matthew 14. Let's read from verses 13. They followed

  129. him on foot and out of the cities. And Jesus

  130. went forth and saw a great multitude and was

  131. moved with compassion towards them and healed

  132. their sick. Right. Let's continue. You're going

  133. to see something as you go down that the disciples

  134. also ministered to the physical needs of people.

  135. That is, they served. They were taught how to

  136. serve also, the work of service. 15. And when

  137. it was evening, the disciples came to him saying,

  138. this is a desert place. And the time is now past.

  139. Send the multitude away, that they may go into

  140. the villages and buy themselves rituals. But

  141. Jesus said unto them, They need not depart. Give

  142. ye them to eat. And they said unto him, We have

  143. here but five loaves and two fishes. And he said,

  144. Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the

  145. multitude to sit down. So they are serving. We

  146. see service. It is part of discipleship. In chapter

  147. 10, he's sending them to preach, to heal. In

  148. chapter 14, they are to serve. They shared food

  149. to the people. So it's also part of discipleship.

  150. Let's also look in the same. That is verse 31.

  151. Verse 31. Verse 31, previously, Jesus said, come

  152. walking on the water, on the sea. Then Peter

  153. and other disciples were in the boat. Then Peter

  154. said, Lord, if it is you, bid me to come. And

  155. Jesus said, come. Then Peter walked on the water.

  156. But immediately when he saw the boisterous winds,

  157. he said, he doubted and he started to sink. Immediately

  158. Jesus goes and stretched forth his hand and brought

  159. him. They went into the ship. And immediately

  160. he says, why have you doubted? Right. What was

  161. happening there is that Peter walked. There was

  162. an element of faith in the beginning. Then later

  163. on, doubt crept in. And the Lord brought him

  164. in and started also to explain to him, why have

  165. you doubted? So, there was a problem. There's

  166. doubt. Jesus brings him in. He addresses the

  167. doubt. It is part of discipleship. There's a

  168. failure. The pastors will see. Your team leader

  169. will see. Okay, you did this wrong. Come here.

  170. This is how you do it. Practical. Then lastly,

  171. let's also look at the last example. Matthew

  172. 17, 14. Matthew 17, 14 to 21. Pastor Fred is

  173. also taught us in this direction. There was a

  174. man who had a son who was having seizures and

  175. he was greatly tormented by demons. So the apostles,

  176. the man brought the son to the apostles and the

  177. apostles were not able to cast the demons. The

  178. same people in chapter 10 that went, cast out

  179. demons. Well, later on you hear a report telling

  180. them that, Lord, the demons are subject to us.

  181. So may that they came back with a report of what

  182. they have. But in chapter 17, you see a problem.

  183. So let's read it. They are not able to cast out

  184. demons. And see how Jesus' reaction to that.

  185. And when they were come to the multitude, there

  186. came him a certain man, kneeling down to him

  187. and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son, for he

  188. is lunatic and so vexed. For oftentimes he falleth

  189. into the fire and oft into the water. And I brought

  190. him to thy disciples, and they couldn't cure

  191. him. The same people. That's in chapter 10. They

  192. went to cast out devils. Then Jesus answered

  193. and said, All faithless and perverse generation,

  194. how long shall I be with you? How long shall

  195. I suffer you? Right? Bring him hither to me.

  196. And Jesus rebuked the devil and he departed out

  197. of him. And the child was cured from that very

  198. hour. Then came his disciples now. Verse 19.

  199. Then came his disciples to Jesus apart, privately.

  200. You know, you cannot ask this question in public.

  201. So they came to us to inquire. How is it that

  202. we're not able to do this? Is there something

  203. special? Let's see. So, they come to Jesus apart

  204. and said, why could we not cast him out? 20.

  205. And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief,

  206. for verily I say unto you, if you have faith

  207. as of a grain of mustard seed, You shall say

  208. unto this mountain, Remove hands to yonder place,

  209. and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible

  210. unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out by

  211. prayer and by fasting. There is an issue. There

  212. is an issue of unbelief that happened here to

  213. the disciples. So Jesus now addresses that unbelief.

  214. Pastor Fred has stood in this line. So I'm not

  215. going to do much more here. So he brings them

  216. in. He never rebukes them. He brings them in.

  217. He teaches them. Later on in chapter 28, let's

  218. go back to chapter 28. This is after verse 17.

  219. Chapter 28, we see this is when Jesus was giving

  220. the great commission. Verse 18, it says, And

  221. Jesus said unto them, All power is given unto

  222. me in heaven and earth. Go ye therefore and teach

  223. all nations, baptizing them in the name of the

  224. Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching

  225. them to observe all things whatsoever I have

  226. commanded you. And lo, I am with you always,

  227. even unto the end of the world or the age. Also,

  228. let's see the same account in Mark chapter 16.

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  229. You see that Jesus didn't tell them, no, no,

  230. you guys are not qualified. Stop, stop, stop.

  231. I'm looking for another pack of people. No. He

  232. is the discipler. He finds an error. He finds

  233. where there is a problem. He brings them in.

  234. He teaches that. He addresses that problem. They

  235. send them again. So, let's look. Mark 16. 15.

  236. Mark 16, 15. And he said unto them, Go ye into

  237. all the world and preach the gospel to every

  238. creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall

  239. be saved, but he that believeth not shall be

  240. damned. And these signs shall follow them that

  241. believe in my name. They shall cast out devils.

  242. They shall speak with new tongues. They shall

  243. take up serpents. And if they drink any deadly

  244. thing, it shall not hurt them. They shall lay

  245. hands on the sick and the sick will recover.

  246. So you see that even at the end, Jesus still

  247. sent them again. So you see, discipleship, what

  248. is happening? They are trained, number one, by

  249. precepts. Jesus showed them by precepts. Many

  250. times Jesus took them when he healed the people,

  251. when he performed miracles, they were dead. Now

  252. Jesus is now telling them, now we can go and

  253. do the same. Let's look at another instance where

  254. Apostle Paul taught a church. That is, He's a

  255. pastor in that church, Galatian church. Then

  256. he was absent. Then some guys came in and they

  257. preached another gospel, which is not another.

  258. Then there was now a problem again because there

  259. was a shift that happened. Now they were towards

  260. legalism. Then Apostle Paul comes again and corrects

  261. them again. That is part of discipleship also.

  262. Let's look at it. That is Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3:1–3

  263. verses 1 to 3. Galatians. Just after 2 Corinthians.

  264. So all foolish Galatians who have bewitched you

  265. that you should not obey the truth. Before whose

  266. eyes Jesus Christ has been evidently set forth,

  267. crucified among you, this only would I learn

  268. of you. Receive ye the Spirit by the works of

  269. the law or by hearing of faith. Are ye so foolish,

  270. having begun in the Spirit? Are ye now made perfect

  271. by the flesh? That is, in the beginning they

  272. received this gospel by faith. If you want to

  273. see something, go to chapter 1. You'll see where

  274. the problem came in. Chapter 1. Verse 6. It says,

  275. I marvel that ye are so soon more from him that

  276. called you into the grace of Christ and to another

  277. gospel, right? That is, which means different,

  278. totally different. The gospel is totally different.

  279. These were people that were taught. They understood

  280. the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ through faith.

  281. In Christ Jesus. But later on, other people came.

  282. And what happens? Apostle Paul does not leave

  283. it there. He comes back and he reteaches them

  284. again. Let's see. Verse 7. It says, Which is

  285. not another, but there are some that trouble

  286. you and would pervert the gospel of Christ. Some

  287. that trouble you and would pervert the gospel

  288. of Christ. Which is Sarazo. That's the word there.

  289. is the word Tarazo. The reason why they preach

  290. another gospel is that they will trouble you.

  291. That is, they will unsettle you. That which you've

  292. been assured of, right? They will come and move

  293. it. That you are left with anxiety. You are left

  294. with, you are no longer assured. There's no assurance

  295. anymore. Why? Because they will come and tell

  296. you, you have received it by faith. Another person

  297. will come and say, you have to do works. So Apostle

  298. Paul will come and say, that is another gospel

  299. in correcting that error. What it does is that

  300. it unsettles the believer. But it does not leave

  301. it that way. It comes back. It teaches them again

  302. like a father. Then they continue. So, number

  303. one, we see that Jesus modeled the pattern of

  304. discipleship from the scriptures we write. Jesus

  305. modeled the pattern of discipleship. He sent

  306. the apostles to preach as we saw in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  307. 10. Involved them in practical service in Matthew

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  308. chapter 14. Jesus corrects Peter after he doubted.

  309. That is Matthew chapter 14, 31. And he had them

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  310. to exercise authority which now we saw in Matthew

  311. 17, 14 to 21. So what we see in discipleship

  312. is that there is training. Number one, which

  313. is transmission of knowledge, information. Then

  314. number two, we have training, which is application

  315. of the knowledge, which leads to formation of

  316. habits. Evangelism is a habit that is built.

  317. We are taught the word of God. We go out, we

  318. preach the gospel, we do it again, we do it again,

  319. we come in church, we minister to one another,

  320. we speak in tongues, we interpret tongues. Over

  321. time, it becomes a habit. There is something

  322. that is formed within you. That same thing, it

  323. is when you go out of this place, when you go

  324. out of Cyprus, where you find yourself anyway,

  325. in your cell meeting, among your friends, it

  326. is the same thing that you also do there. That

  327. is the practicality of what you have been taught.

  328. then you also rise disciples. So, we saw some

  329. that discipleship is not complete without training,

  330. without exercise, what you've been taught. So,

  331. in three weeks, just very near, we have Catechismas.

  332. We'll come here, we'll sit down, we are told

  333. the word of God from morning to evening, morning

  334. to evening, morning to evening. Pastor Koso last

  335. time, he taught us about the gifts of the Spirit.

  336. After that, what happened? we practiced it. That

  337. is, information was given, then what followed

  338. was the practice of that which was taught. That

  339. is proper discipleship. Something fun is that

  340. you cannot be properly discipled through online

  341. meeting. You can receive information, which can

  342. also be another gospel. That is, if you see it,

  343. then there is not the practicality of that. You

  344. know, discipleship is good, discipleship is,

  345. you know the Great Commission, God says go, but

  346. the practicality of it is not there. Therefore,

  347. that is incomplete discipleship. You cannot have

  348. a disciple who is not near you. You cannot have

  349. a disciple in Zimbabwe. If you have a disciple,

  350. you carry him out, He comes to your house, he

  351. comes to your place, or she comes to your place,

  352. you teach the Word of God. After that, you pray.

  353. After praying, you take them out, you evangelize.

  354. You teach them the things of the Spirit, like

  355. we are being taught here. Then also, you demonstrate

  356. it, then they learn from it. When you see that

  357. there is a problem, there is a misunderstanding

  358. in some aspects, you bring them back, you re

  359. -teach it, you correct them, you do it again.

  360. Again and again, again and again, discipleship

  361. does not stop. So we see habits being formed.

  362. We see responsibility, which we call the work.

  363. A believer is taught about the work of ministry

  364. during discipleship. Now, the gospel can be preached

  365. to you. Someone preached to me. I believed. I

  366. don't know which one saved me. I'm part of those

  367. people. Many people preach to me. But I never

  368. knew that I also need to go out and preach. Or

  369. they will just preach to you, leave you there.

  370. But that is not discipleship. Yes, you are saved.

  371. But the greatest work comes after you are saved.

  372. What's next after you are saved? Which is discipleship.

  373. That is where you are modeled. That's where you

  374. see character development. That is... Where you

  375. see yourself working effectively in God's calling

  376. for your life. So, I'll just read this discipleship

  377. model. We preach the gospel. The person believes.

  378. Stay with the person. Teach them. Guide them

  379. into practice. Then ensure that they are growing.

  380. Those are the things you can take note of when

  381. you have a disciple. So, most people will still

  382. get conversion. I want this all, you leave this

  383. all. In fact, some people will say, choose a

  384. church which you are comfortable going. No. Take

  385. that disciple to your own local church. So, one

  386. thing also that happens in discipleship is that

  387. teaching is continuous, repetitive, And reinforcing,

  388. this is Jesus' model. You teach continuously,

  389. you repeat the same thing. You teach again, you

  390. repeat the same thing. It's not the first time

  391. you teach a person and just assume that they've

  392. understood it. No. I believe that when the disciples

  393. saw Jesus doing it, they were like, we can do

  394. the same thing. Yes, it's easy. But Jesus will

  395. bring them back, teach them again, send them,

  396. they find an error, comes back, they didn't do

  397. this correctly, let's correct them, go back.

  398. That's the model. So, the call of this teaching,

  399. like I said from the beginning, is we're going

  400. to look at the walk, which is the conduct, walk,

  401. W -A -L -K, W -A -L -K, and the wake, W -O -R

  402. -K. The walk, Under the word W -A -L -K, we're

  403. going to look at the conduct of the believer.

  404. How the believer ought to live. Then we're going

  405. to look at the work, W -O -R -K. That is the

  406. assignment of the believer. What the believer

  407. does here in the earth. Those are the two things

  408. we're going to be looking at. So, a Christian

  409. life is a trained walk, purposefully, right?

  410. And we know that this is enabled by the Spirit

  411. of God. So, in discipleship, one of the things

  412. we're going to be told or being trained in, they

  413. have started already. Me, I've been here from

  414. 2021. That's five years from now. Five years

  415. to now, yeah. And it's the same thing that has

  416. been taught to me. Over and over again, some

  417. of the things which I was taught in 2022, I understood

  418. them in 2025. That is when they started making

  419. sense. So look, there's a gap of about three

  420. years. I understood them in 2025, 2024. I was

  421. talking to Pastor Fred. And I said that my first

  422. Catholicism was in 2022. Pastor Olu taught about

  423. the kingdom of God. That is 1 Matthew chapter

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  424. 16. I thought that I understood it. This is 2022.

  425. 2023 came first. 2024 came in the middle of 2024.

  426. Now it's making sense. After two years, there's

  427. a repetition of what we are being taught over

  428. and over. There's consistency. I'm around for

  429. all the meetings. I'm being told the same thing.

  430. Now my mind is catching up. Now I can understand.

  431. I can put all things together now. And it's making

  432. sense. That is continuity. A disciple is a person

  433. who is always available to be taught. Always.

  434. You cannot say, I am a disciple of so and so.

  435. When you say prayer meeting, you are not there.

  436. Karatismas, you are not there. You come in one

  437. Sunday, you jump two, you come in. No, that's

  438. not discipleship. You are a visitor. You are

  439. a visitor. You come and go. Pastor Poston will

  440. say, you are a UFO. I identify flying objects.

  441. Okay. So, one thing also that happens in discipleship

  442. is all of us are going through it. In fact, right

  443. now online, there are many things that are happening.

  444. We hear different things that are happening.

  445. You go back home, you hear something else. You

  446. go another place, you hear something else. The

  447. same thing is being taught in different ways.

  448. Here you come, salvation is eternal. You go to

  449. another place, you can lose it. you go online,

  450. it is possible for you to lose. You come to church,

  451. you cannot lose. One thing is happening is that

  452. if you are not grounded in the truth, that kind

  453. of gospel unsettles you. That's why you start

  454. seeing questions. Ah, pastor, that thing you

  455. say, eternal salvation, ah, I don't think it's

  456. like so. Why? What happens is that there is something

  457. else that has been preached. It's troubled the

  458. person. That is what Galatians says, that gospel,

  459. it unsettles you. Those kinds of gospel, it disturbs

  460. you. It brings anxiety. You're not going to show

  461. that to yourself. You're not going to even show

  462. that internal life is really everlasting. So,

  463. in discipleship, we are trained how to think.

  464. Number one. We are trained how to think. Interpretive

  465. kind of thinking. Let's look at something. So,

  466. Proper discipleship trains a person to think

  467. correctly. A properly discipled believer does

  468. not just know verses in passing, just quoting

  469. verses. No. He knows how to reason with the scriptures

  470. because he has taught how to do it. To ask the

  471. rightful questions and to interpret rightly,

  472. which is exegesis, right? Exegesis. E -X -E -G

  473. -E -S -I -S. which is a skill of asking intelligent,

  474. interpretive questions. So, the reason why many

  475. people or some believers, you hear something,

  476. you flow with it, is because the way you reason

  477. with the scriptures is not right. By the time

  478. someone will come and tell you that You need

  479. to be circumcised. That is the Galatians situation.

  480. You need to be circumcised. Salvation, yes, you

  481. are served, but you need to be circumcised for

  482. you to be really, really served. Oh, you are

  483. served, but you can still miss rapture. Yeah,

  484. you know, when the Lord comes, What you're doing

  485. in that moment, if it's not in both plans, you

  486. miss the first flight, you catch the second one.

  487. That is if when the second one comes, you catch.

  488. No. When you are being taught rightly, you ask

  489. critical questions. Okay. How is it that Galatians,

  490. for instance, the Galatians, how is that they

  491. receive salvation by faith? How then are you

  492. saying that you are perfected by your own works?

  493. How is that possible? When initially it was not

  494. about me. Let's look at examples. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 19:3

  495. 19 verse 3 is an example of a question that was

  496. asked. That was asked Jesus. Okay, before we

  497. go to Matthew, let's read 2 Timothy 2 .23. 2

    2 Timothy 2:23

  498. Timothy chapter 2 verse 23. But foolish and unlearned

  499. questions avoid knowing that they do gender strife.

  500. That is, this is talking about useless questions,

  501. right? I'm talking about we are going in the

  502. direction of how to really ask proper questions.

  503. But there are some questions like this. Which

  504. gender strife? Avoid them. That's one. Number

  505. two. Let's check. There's a situation that happens

  506. in Matthew 19, where the Pharisees came to ask

  507. Jesus a question, not to learn. This is to tempt

  508. you. Another instance, let's just read it. Matthew

    Matthew 19:3

  509. 19, verse 3. What we're just trying to see is

  510. that when you are discipled properly, you'll

  511. be able to ask proper questions that builds,

  512. that advises you. But we're just seeing... An

  513. example of these guys, these fellows. That is

  514. Matthew chapter 19. Matthew 19. This kind of

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  515. question is not to learn. Matthew 19 from verses

  516. 3. And the Pharisees also came unto him, tempting

  517. him and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man

  518. to put away his wife for every cause? And he

  519. answered and said unto them, Have ye not read

  520. that he that made them from the beginning? made

  521. them male and female, and said, for this cause

  522. a man shall leave his father and mother and shall

  523. cleave into his wife. Then it continues. This

  524. kind of question, number one, is it is not a

  525. question to learn. It is to tempt. These guys,

  526. their motive is not to come to learn. They are

  527. just trying to find a way to trap him. Let's

  528. look at another one. This one is different. It's

  529. the opposite. Luke chapter 2. Luke chapter 2.

Luke 2 chapter mention Luke 2 chapter mention

  530. This is how a believer or a person who is being

  531. trained thinks. This is a model from Christ.

  532. Luke chapter 2. From verses 46 to 47. And it

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  533. came to pass that after three days they found

  534. him. and they found him in the temple. What was

  535. he doing? Sitting in the midst of the doctors,

  536. both hearing them and asking them questions.

  537. This is talking about Jesus. They've come for

  538. an occasion, then on their way back, Jesus stayed

  539. behind. Then the parents found out after some

  540. time that the child was not with them. So they

  541. went back to look for the child Jesus, our Lord.

  542. They went back. Then they said they found him

  543. sitting in the midst of the elders. What was

  544. he doing? And they found him in the temple sitting

  545. in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them

  546. and asking them questions. And all that had him

  547. were astonished at his understanding and answers.

  548. And when they saw him, they were amazed. And

  549. his mother said unto him, son, they were looking

  550. for him. So one thing we see about Jesus is that

  551. he was asking proper questions. To what end?

  552. That he may understand. So part of discipleship

  553. is you are taught how to think critically. You

  554. are taught how to reason with the scriptures

  555. and to understand them. That is a result of proper

  556. discipleship. You cannot think this way if you

  557. are not discipled properly with a good discipler.

  558. So, we can see that We are taught how to think

  559. properly. We are taught how to think properly.

  560. Then let's see, lastly, that is Acts chapter

    Acts 17:11

  561. 17 verses 11. Acts 17 verses 11. One person who

    Acts 17:11

  562. can ask you a question is Pastor Victor. You

  563. go ahead and ask or you say something. You should

  564. be prepared to think. Yes, that is proper discipleship.

  565. It helps you. It helps you how to think properly.

  566. It helps you how to see the scriptures. That's

  567. one thing you see in Luke. Jesus meets the disciples

  568. on the way. Then they were discussing about Jesus.

  569. Jesus joins them. And they started telling Jesus

  570. about Jesus. Have you not heard? What kind of

  571. conversation are you having? Walking along, they

  572. say, have you not heard what has happened here

  573. recently about a man, Christ Jesus, who was crucified?

  574. Oh, we thought that he was a prophet. But suddenly,

  575. they killed him. Then Jesus texts them in verse

  576. 25 and he's told them, all ye fools are slow

  577. of heart to believe all the prophets have spoken.

  578. All know Christ has suffered all these things

  579. and to enter into his glory. And beginning at

  580. Moses, the prophets and the Psalms, he expounded

  581. unto them the things concerning himself. You

  582. go to 45 and it says that he opened their understanding

  583. that they may understand the scriptures. That

  584. is what Jesus was teaching them. He was remodeling

  585. the way they think, the way they saw the scriptures,

  586. the way they reasoned was the problem. But now

  587. after they saw everything, that moment he said,

  588. and their understanding was opened and they saw

  589. that this was truly Jesus. So that is proper

  590. explanation, proper. teaching that leads your

  591. person to think critically when they approach

  592. the scriptures. You cannot grow with nuggets.

  593. You go on YouTube, you see one two -minute video,

  594. one charge. You, this and this, one, two, one,

  595. two, they will say many things. You cannot grow.

  596. You won't. We have to sit down, being taught.

  597. There's pain. Three years and above with Christ

  598. Jesus. Being told the same thing. In fact, same

  599. thing. From the beginning, Jesus was telling

  600. them about his death. They never understood it.

  601. In fact, some of them, they were looking for

  602. a kingdom saying, when your kingdom comes, I'll

  603. be on the right, I'll be on the left. The mother

  604. came to plead on his children's behalf. But it

  605. never meant that. But when he resurrected from

  606. the dead, that is when they understood it. So,

  607. let's continue. So, Acts 17 verse 11. Acts 17

    Acts 17:11 Acts 17:11

  608. verse 11. Acts 17 verse 11. These were the variants.

    Acts 17:11

  609. Variants. Acts 17 verse 11. These were more normal.

    Acts 17:11

  610. than those in Thessalonica, in that they received

  611. the word of God, or they received the word, with

  612. all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures

  613. daily, whether those things were so. They were

  614. reasoning. They were taught. They received the

  615. word of the Lord with readiness of heart. They

  616. went to search out the scriptures. This is because

  617. the word of God was taught. There was a persuasion

  618. that happened when the Word of God was preached

  619. to these guys. And they went to search, to check

  620. whether those things were so. So, discipleship,

  621. discipleship produces a habit, that spiritual

  622. habit. There's behavioral consistency. This is

  623. the result of discipleship. And repeated exposure

  624. to the scripture results in comfort. That is,

  625. the believer finds comfort with the scriptures.

  626. It produces dependence on the scriptures and

  627. a scriptural worldview. This happens in training

  628. rather than being shared with friends. And society

  629. and culture, they have effect on people's lives.

  630. But in discipleship, we are taught how to think.

  631. You are taught how to conduct yourself. You are

  632. taught how to be comfortable with the scriptures,

  633. how to be grounded, how to be rooted, so that

  634. when another gospel comes, you'll be able to

  635. know. So let's go back to Mark 16. I'm just going

  636. to read it in passing. We are looking at the

  637. work. The work. The work, sorry. The work. The

  638. work. The work. That is the disciples' responsibility

  639. to what they are supposed to do. That is the

  640. work. They are being taught. Jesus taught them

  641. in chapter 16. He gave them an instruction to

  642. go and do something. Let's see. And he said unto

  643. them, Go ye into all the world and preach the

  644. gospel to every creature. He that believeth and

  645. is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth

  646. not shall be damned, and these signs shall follow

  647. them that believe. So there's key responsibilities

  648. we see here. Those people that were disciples,

  649. they were now being sent to preach, to teach,

  650. to disciple. And one thing that is also going

  651. to happen is that signs will be following. John

    John 20 chapter mention

  652. chapter 20, same also. We are talking about the

  653. work. John 20, 21 to 23. And you see that in

  654. this work, we are partners together with Christ.

  655. We are partners together with God. There's a

  656. responsibility. What's the responsibility? Go

  657. and teach, go and disciple. And God is working

  658. with us. John 20, verses 21 to 23. Just before

    John 20:21–23

  659. us, that's where John is. 20, verses 21 to 23.

  660. Then said Jesus unto them, Peace be unto you,

  661. as my Father hath sent me, even so sent I you.

  662. And when he had said this, he breathed on them,

  663. and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.

  664. Whosoever sins you remit, they are remitted unto

  665. them. And whosoever sins you retain, they are

  666. retained unto them. So they were taught. Now

  667. there's a responsibility that comes in. Go and

  668. preach. And what are they going to do? They say

  669. that whosoever sins you remit are remitted, and

  670. whosoever sins you retain are retained. What

  671. the disciples are going to do is that they are

  672. going to announce what God has done in Christ

  673. Jesus. They are going to preach in the name of

  674. Jesus. What does that mean? We have seen from

  675. previous teaching last week that it entails what

  676. God has done in Christ Jesus. What did God do?

  677. He has forgiven. He has made pardon of sin available

  678. through Christ Jesus. So that is what they are

  679. going to To preach. They will preach. What does

  680. God do? God has already forgiven sin. Mark. Micah

  681. 7 verse. 18. Micah 7 verse 18. They will be preaching.

    Micah 7:18

  682. What are they doing? They are announcing. What

  683. God has done. Micah 4 verse 18. Micah 7 verse

    Micah 7:18

  684. 18. It says. Who is. Who is a God like unto thee

  685. that pardoned iniquity and passed it by the transgression

  686. of the remnant of his heritage? He returned not

  687. his anger forever because he delighted in mercy.

  688. So God forgives the sin. What does the believer

  689. do? The believer is announcing what God has done.

  690. So he's working together with God. Let's also

  691. see Psalm 103, verse 3. Wait, Pastor Emmanuel.

    Psalms 103:3

  692. Read Psalm 103, verse 3. Bless the Lord, O my

    Psalms 103:3

  693. soul, and all that is within me. Bless his holy

  694. name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not

  695. all his benefits. Who forgiveth all thy iniquities,

  696. and who healeth all thy diseases. Who do what?

  697. Who forgiveth all thy iniquities, and who healeth

  698. all thy diseases. So it is God that forgives.

  699. And the believer is announcing what God has already

  700. done. So they are working together. A believer

  701. works together with the Lord. Isaiah 43 verse

    Isaiah 43:25

  702. 25 is the last one we'll look at. Isaiah. Isaiah

    Isaiah 43:25

  703. 43 verse 25. I even, I am he that blotted away,

  704. I blotted out thy transgression for my own sake,

  705. and I will not remember thy sins. So God is the

  706. one that forgives. God has already made a valid

  707. provision for the forgiveness of sin. And what's

  708. the responsibility of the believers? Responsibility

  709. of the believer is to announce that which the

  710. Lord has done in Christ Jesus. So we are co -laborers

  711. together with the Lord. This is as a result.

  712. of discipleship. This is when you know it. That

  713. is when you come to understand it. Then you go

  714. out and preach. That's the work. This is a responsibility.

  715. So, we'll end on this section today, right? We're

  716. going to read Galatians. This is the last one.

  717. Then we'll do it there for a long time. Then

  718. we'll continue on Wednesday. Galatians, let's

  719. go to Galatians from verses 5. Galatians chapter

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  720. 5 from verses 14. And in this part, what you

  721. are going to see is, we said we have spoken about

  722. the work and we are going to also look at the

  723. work that is in the conduct. So we're going to

  724. be looking in Galatians. We're spending more

  725. time in Galatians chapter 5. Yes, there's something

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  726. that is, there's a way a believer ought to conduct

  727. themselves. Let's see from Galatians chapter

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  728. 5. Galatians chapter 5 from verses 14. Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  729. 5 from verses 14. It says, for all the law, is

  730. fulfilled in one word, even in this, thou shalt

  731. love thy neighbor as thyself. And if ye bite

  732. and devour one another, take heed that ye not

  733. be consumed one of another. This I say then,

  734. walk in the Spirit. Walk in the Spirit. Peripatao.

  735. That's the way that appears there. It implies,

  736. it can be literal. Or figurative. It can mean

  737. literal movement. And also can mean. A manner

  738. of life. How one ought to conduct himself. And

  739. in this context. It's not literal. It's figurative.

  740. Talking about how a believer. Ought to conduct

  741. himself. Let's continue from verse 17. For the

  742. flesh lusts against the spirit. And the spirit

  743. against the flesh. And these are contrary. The

  744. one to another. so that ye cannot do the things

  745. that ye would. But if ye be led by the Spirit,

  746. ye cannot be under the law. Now the works of

  747. the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery,

  748. fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry,

  749. witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath,

  750. strife, sedition, heresies, envying, murderous,

  751. drunkenness, reveling, and such like, of which

  752. I tell you before, as I have also told you. And

  753. the time passed that they which do such things

  754. shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the

  755. fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, and

  756. longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, and faith,

  757. meekness, temperance. Against such there is no

  758. law. And they that are Christ have crucified

  759. the flesh with his affection and lust. If we

  760. live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

  761. Let us not be... Desires of unglory provoking

  762. one another and envying one another. So, I'll

  763. give a background of Galatians. The way Galatians

  764. is structured, you look from chapter 3, chapter

  765. 4. The way Paul was explaining or the way Paul

  766. was moving. You see Abraham. You see the seed.

  767. You see the land, you see Hagar, you see Sinai,

  768. you see the promise, meaning the audience of

  769. Paul. Paul assumes that his audience have a background

  770. of the scriptures, that is Genesis to Malachi,

  771. all that thought. So now when he comes and start

  772. talking walk, he's teaching from the scriptures,

  773. right? Genesis to Malachi. When it comes to the

  774. walk in the spirit, Peribatau, the first one,

  775. although the other walk in the spirit you see

  776. in verse 25 is different. It's another shed.

  777. The one in 16, when he's explaining to them,

  778. the way he's building his argument is coming

  779. from Genesis to Malachi. He assumes that his

  780. audience, they know the scriptures already in

  781. the background. So what then happens when he

  782. now employs some of the terms? There's something

  783. that is involved in the minds of his listeners.

  784. That is the Old Testament. So when they say war,

  785. in the Old Testament, there is a shed of... If

  786. you go to your LXX, that is your Greek Septuagint,

  787. the Old Testament of the Greek, you see that

  788. the word peripatau is so close to the word that

  789. is used in Genesis when it talks about... And

  790. Enoch walked with the Lord and he was... Enoch

  791. walked with the Lord. Noah walked with the Lord.

  792. Same shed is the word halak. It also has two

  793. sheds, which means either it can be literal or

  794. also either it can be figurative. So, let's think.

  795. So, Paul is teaching from that same position.

  796. So, when he says walk, what comes to their mind?

  797. Those instances. Right. Okay, I still have six

  798. minutes. We can look at it. What comes in their

  799. mind is those instances. We're going to read

  800. some of those places. Genesis 12 verse 1. You

    Genesis 12:1

  801. see that word halak. H -A -L -A -K -H will be

  802. the root word. Most of the words are coming from

  803. that root word where we're going to see it. Genesis

  804. 12. Genesis 12. And you see what is happening.

  805. Genesis 12 .1. Genesis 12 .1. Now the Lord...

  806. I said unto Abraham, Get thee out of thy country,

  807. and from thy kindred, and from thy house, unto

  808. the land which I will show thee. And I will make

  809. of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee,

  810. and I will make thy name great, and thou shalt

  811. be a blessing. And I will bless them that bless

  812. thee, and cast them that cast thee, and in thee

  813. shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

  814. So Abraham departed as the Lord had spoken unto

  815. him, and went with him. And Abraham was 75 years

  816. old when he departed out of Haran. That's one.

  817. Get thee out of thy kindred unto the land that

  818. I'll show thee. You see the way they're appearing.

  819. Get thee out of thy land. One which is more...

  820. I want you to look at this following one. We'll

  821. come back to Genesis 12 later on. Let's look

  822. at this one. That is Genesis 13, verse 17. Then

    Genesis 13:17

  823. you tell me, what do you think? Is it literal

  824. or is it figurative? Genesis 13, verse 17. It

    Genesis 13:17

  825. says, Arise, walk through the land, and the land

  826. of it, and in the bread of it, and I'll give

  827. it to thee. Is it literal? Is it figurative?

  828. So in this, also Abraham was returned to the

  829. land. Yes, there's also a literal movement in

  830. this. But when it's now explained much more by

  831. the apostles, it goes beyond the land. It's now

  832. used also figuratively, which you're going to

  833. see on Wednesday. We're going to look much more

  834. on it on Wednesday. So let's just look at these

  835. ones, then we finish. I'm going to just read

  836. them. Then you check them. Genesis 12, verse

  837. 22 to 24. And Enoch worked with God. And Enoch

  838. worked with God. This is a Hebrew idiom. Number

  839. one, you should know what is employed. It's a

  840. Hebrew idiom. It's a Hebrew idiom, which is describing

  841. Enoch's relationship with God. This expression

  842. conveys an idea of one ordering his life according

  843. to God's will. That is what's happening here.

  844. The order is according to God's will. That is,

  845. he's being faithful and obedient. That is the

  846. idea here. Same with Genesis 6 verse 9. Noah

    Genesis 6:9

  847. was a just man and Noah walked with God. That

  848. walk again is the same word. And also talks about

  849. a relationship, a fellowship, a participation

  850. in what God was doing. Same thing you see in

  851. Micah 6 verse 8. It tells the people to walk

    Micah 6:8

  852. with God. With the Lord. In Genesis also, chapter

  853. 3 verse 8. You see, and they heard the voice

  854. of the Lord. God walking in the garden. So what

  855. you see there in the garden, we have seen that

  856. there is a temple narrative, man and God dwelling

  857. together. So what that comes in your mind is

  858. that that word is not figurative. That word is

  859. figurative, sorry, not literal. It means a relationship

  860. between man and God. Get this, we are going to

  861. explain this much more on Wednesday. What you

  862. see here is that There is a fellowship between

  863. man and God. From the last chapters we read,

  864. from the last verses we read, there's a fellowship,

  865. obedience, walking in obedience. There is a participation

  866. that is happening. If you want to look at all

  867. the people we've gone through, they were preachers

  868. of the gospel in their generations. They were

  869. prophets of the Lord. What were they doing? They

  870. were announcing the gospel of God. They were

  871. announcing the message of God. That is, there

  872. is a participation in there. So when our Paul

  873. comes to Galatians and he employs the same thing,

  874. the people's mind will definitely go back. Their

  875. attention is drawn back to participation, fellowship,

  876. and relationship for the Lord. So now when he

  877. comes and says, In Galatians chapter 5, verse

    Galatians 5:16

  878. 16, we are going to continue from here. Galatians

    Galatians 5:16

  879. 5, verse 16. Galatians 5, verse 16. It says,

    Galatians 5:16

  880. One thing here is figurative. What comes in their

  881. mind is that there is, when they say walk in

  882. the Spirit, it's talking about fellowship, participation.

  883. It's what is required of a believer. That is

  884. conduct here that is being spoken about. There's

  885. a way a believer ought to conduct himself. Which

  886. we are going to look at in the following meeting.

  887. Then we are going to look at the fruit of the

  888. Spirit also. Because if you look at the discussion,

  889. There's 11 seconds. If you look at the discussion,

  890. the progression of discussion, you see that why

  891. Paul employed the word fruit of the Spirit. That

  892. is, there is something that is expected that

  893. when a believer walks in the Spirit, there is

  894. a result of that walk, which he calls the fruit

  895. of the Spirit, which is love, which we are going

  896. to discuss on Wednesday much more. We appreciate

  897. you being here today. We hope you carry this

  898. word with you throughout your week. Don't forget

  899. to check the show notes for additional insights.
