  1. Welcome to NECF sermons. Each message here is

  2. designed to uplift and strengthen you in your

  3. walk with God. Don't miss out. Stay with us until

  4. the end for a rewarding experience. Let's dive

  5. right in. the issue of historical and cultural

  6. contexts. We said that God utilizes history and

  7. culture to communicate His Word. Are we together?

  8. So when you want to understand the background,

  9. the historical background, of that text, and

  10. which whatever I'm going to do here, the next

  11. step we're going to do especially is to take

  12. each some of the problems that has been perpetuated

  13. in the world through using the Bible, and what

  14. we will do is that we will apply all these contexts

  15. we have been talking about. Are we together?

  16. And then, So we're going to do a lot of interpretation

  17. together. The idea is for us to understand how

  18. we can go about applying all this. But you can

  19. ask some few questions to be able to know the

  20. cultural or the historical context of a text.

  21. When was this written is very important because

  22. when you ask when it will tell you the time.

  23. That is a historical fact. So it helps you to

  24. travel back in the sun. You're not trying to

  25. do and Moses cross a river. And then you say,

  26. I pray that you will cross a river. You understand

  27. what I'm saying? Because where you are staying,

  28. there's no river here. So that's not how to go

  29. about it. So you want to ask when was this written?

  30. Because it helps you to travel back in history

  31. to understand the times, what was happening at

  32. that moment. You want to also ask the question,

  33. who were the original or who was the original

  34. audience? Who was the originality? Man of God

  35. was teaching us. You make some very sensitive

  36. statement that you have to truly travel back

  37. in history to understand it. When he was talking

  38. about that God using Israel, in the sun to reveal,

  39. so we have to understand them. Even though you

  40. can say Israel, Israel, all of us, it was with

  41. Abraham, but Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers,

  42. Deuteronomy, the one you are saying before them,

  43. it was written to them. Did you understand what

  44. I'm trying to say? So that means to understand,

  45. in fact, when he was talking, my mind just moved

  46. to Romans chapter 3, Romans chapter 9, that talks

Romans 3 chapter mention Romans 9 chapter mention

  47. about that they are the custodians of the revelations

  48. of God. Are we together? To them is the Christ,

  49. to them is the oracles of God, to them is the

  50. law, to them is salvation. Are we together? Yes.

  51. Glory to Jesus. So, and what is the political

  52. climate? You know, sometimes we don't like to

  53. talk politics, but you see, it is in a real world.

  54. When those people existed, some people were on

  55. the throne. Was he a monarchy? Was he kings?

  56. What is whatever? Georgies? Whatever. I mean,

  57. what are actually the things that are happening

  58. then? It will help us now go back to see who

  59. was on the throne. Was he during peacetime? Was

  60. he during war? Was he during whatever? And all

  61. those kind of information are important. Don't

  62. be in a haste. You see, there is no award in

  63. just quoting scriptures anyhow. in the sun. It's

  64. not a competition. Do you understand what I'm

  65. saying? You are in God. This is your dwelling

  66. place. You are not going anywhere. Are we together?

  67. So you are not competing with anyone. You can

  68. stay in one scripture for one year, no problem.

  69. Do you understand what I'm saying? Yes. You just

  70. go here, ensure you are studying. Amen. Are we

  71. together? Amen. So this is very important. And

  72. then we looked at, we picked an example of Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  73. chapter 12. We saw how the application, how power

  74. will pull from history, you understand, from

  75. culture to communicate revelation. So if you

  76. don't understand the meaning of that, expression

  77. or that thing that he was communicating, you

  78. will miss the wheel. You will go out of context.

  79. Are we together? You will go out of context.

  80. So together we're just trying to say that when

  81. we saw when Paul used that issue of burning coal,

  82. so it was a visible sign of public remorse for

  83. somebody to show, you understand, that I am sorry.

  84. I regret what I just did. So it will carry coal,

  85. understand, on a clay pot and just be moving

  86. around the street. When you see him, you know

  87. the ha -ha -ha, you understand? That's the communication.

  88. Are we together? Yes. So that was what he was

  89. saying. So Paul was speaking and saying that

  90. when you respond to evil with a radical unexpected

  91. kindness because somebody that would do something

  92. to you will do evil to you is expecting you to

  93. do evil to the person. Do you want something?

  94. If you look at what Paul is saying here is what

  95. exactly Jesus was saying in Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  96. Read from verse 38 to 44. You see that's exactly

  97. what Jesus is saying. How do you treat your enemies?

  98. You understand? He said love them, pray for them.

  99. You understand? so that you imitate your father

  100. in heaven that's exactly so but paul is using

  101. a culture here you understand to communicate

  102. that and he said that when you because your enemy

  103. will not expect that you expect you to react

  104. then you you give him the opposite definitely

  105. to be an unexpected kindness what you are doing

  106. you are not crossing the enemy in the sun what

  107. you are doing you are breaking the defenses of

  108. the enemy And what you are doing is that once

  109. you are breaking his defenses, you are inducing

  110. a psychological warmth of conviction that will

  111. melt the hardened heart into a deep remorseful

  112. self -reflection and repentance. So what is a

  113. historical and cultural fact is that the burning

  114. cause are not literal punishment. That's a historical

  115. fact. The historical fact and the cultural fact

  116. there is that the burning coals are not literal

  117. punishment. They represent a fiery warmth of

  118. conviction that melts the enemies hadn't had

  119. into repentance and peace. So this indicates

  120. that God speaks through real history and culture.

  121. Let me repeat again. God speaks through history

  122. and culture. God speaks through history and culture.

  123. Please note that. God speaks through history

  124. and culture. Very important. So the Bible is

  125. properly interpreted when we take time to understand

  126. the culture of the ancient world in which the

  127. Bible was written. So understanding contains

  128. what sounds like a crude punishment. To tell

  129. somebody just carry coal or fire, it sounds at

  130. the beginning, to us in the modern time, that

  131. car, that is a crude thing to do. Imagine when

  132. I ask you to carry fire, do you understand? But

  133. you see, you can now turn that thing that seems

  134. to, if you look at it beautifully in its context,

  135. that it is a beautiful, in fact I'll call it

  136. a master class on Christ -like peacemaking. Do

  137. you understand what I'm saying? Yes, that's how

  138. to make peace. Don't begin to say, if I'm not

  139. a Christian. Now, stop those life, you know.

  140. Why? You have left that life and you are cherishing

  141. the life again, that life you have left. See,

  142. if I'm not a Christian, you would have seen my

  143. other face. Brother, you don't have any face.

  144. At least you're not two -faced. Hallelujah. So

  145. on the cross, we see this, Jesus actually doing

  146. that. I mean, we've seen it in Jesus to his executioners.

  147. What did he say? Father forgive what? Forgive

  148. them. You gotta imagine this is kind of the thing.

  149. Imagine you are innocent. And people who label

  150. something upon you, and they want to punish you.

  151. Go, you know, in our generation, we say, go and

  152. punish your generation upon generation. Do you

  153. understand what I'm saying? But now you say,

  154. Father, forgive them. They do not know what they

  155. are doing. Are we together? You see, remember

  156. there are many people that were standing there.

  157. There were his disciples that were standing close

  158. by. There were centurions. They were Roman soldiers

  159. who were part of it. Look at it. The Bible recorded

  160. one man in the Sabbath. Give me Mark 15. The

  161. Bible recorded a centurion who was standing by.

  162. When Jesus was saying all those things on the

  163. cross, Father forgive them. And then he said

  164. those words of the Psalmist. Because he said

  165. a lot of things on the cross When the centurion

  166. saw that look at his response Who crucified you

  167. as a Romans were there because crucification

  168. is a Roman punishment They are the only people

  169. who have the legal rights to do so Are we together

  170. so? But we can say part of his own those who

  171. came to execute him when they saw the things

  172. what he was saying on the cross Look at what

  173. it I Say 15 verse 39 15 39 So when the Centurion

  174. who stood opposite him Saw that he cried out

  175. like this and break his last. What did he say?

  176. What did he see truly this man? was a son of

  177. God. Will your response make somebody to see

  178. the revelation of God? Because that's what Paul

  179. is saying. That when your enemy is thirsty, give

  180. him a drink. When he's hungry, feed him. It might

  181. not be literal but that's figurative he's saying.

  182. But in doing so what will you do? He said you

  183. will heap up. What he's saying that what you

  184. are doing is that you will melt, you will break

  185. the defenses of the enemy. And in doing so you

  186. will reveal something. Are we together? Are we

  187. together? It's the same thing Peter was saying

  188. also to the woman whose husband have not obeyed

  189. the word. In 1st Peter 3, he said when he sees

  190. your chest and your conduct, what will he do?

  191. He will be convicted by it. Hallelujah. This

  192. is God's pattern. How many scriptures have I

  193. quoted? I quoted from Peter. I quoted from Jesus.

  194. We Jesus demonstrated it by himself. Are we together?

  195. That is the way to treat your enemies This is

  196. the way of light We're coming to it because some

  197. of the scripture that have been used to torment

  198. people in life so far not the which to live We're

  199. coming to it in a son. These are the scripture

  200. because when you pull a text out of context You

  201. become like the devil You partake from his ministry

  202. You understand No, I don't want to be part of

  203. the ministry of Satan The ministry of people

  204. who twist the world whether knowingly or knowingly

  205. I Want to be part of those I don't want to be

  206. part of the ministry of the Pharisee I Want to

  207. be part of the ministry of Jesus because I am

  208. in him we have a ministry the ministry is hinged

  209. upon the right interpretation because in the

  210. accurate interpretation is the will of God revealed

  211. the will of God is revealed in right interpretation

  212. hallelujah we saw that in Stephen as well Stephen

  213. demonstrated exactly what Jesus did the same

  214. thing father forgive them And the hardened criminal,

  215. the one who later on, who writes, plus his companions,

  216. who write almost the majority of the New Testament,

  217. was there standing, seeing what was happening.

  218. He was supporting them, grabbing their clothes.

  219. He said, kill him. In fact, he himself later

  220. admitted, I was there. I was consenting to what

  221. was happening. Later he started moving, killing

  222. them, killing believers, moving here and there.

  223. You understand? Jesus would meet him and say,

  224. it is hard to kick against the God. You know

  225. God is a piercing this, you know what it means,

  226. is a piercing object like that, a structure.

  227. You know when you kick something that has sharp

  228. things, will it feel good? What he's trying to

  229. say is that what Paul was doing, by attacking

  230. believers was already against his conscience.

  231. Are you with me? Because that means something

  232. has happened although he was consenting to Stephen

  233. killing already. Do you know what the Bible says

  234. that they saw? You understand? The reason why

  235. they even killed Stephen was because Stephen

  236. now raised his head and now saw something and

  237. heavens was open. You understand? And he told

  238. them what he saw. They were angry. Did you understand

  239. see they now stood him all their soul of tussles

  240. was there He was saying what type of a people

  241. is this He couldn't understand but he was still

  242. going to attack them yet something is happening

  243. within him Until he was struck on the way Have

  244. you ever imagined why will they say? You know

  245. the question he asked, who are you Lord? I mean

  246. imagine somebody who has no idea I mean no definitely

  247. you know that this man have an idea the person.

  248. Who are you Lord? That's not the first time he

  249. has his conscience has been hitting him. So what

  250. you are doing is that you are you are evangelism

  251. also. You understand? is a totality. We preach

  252. fundamentally, but our attitude must also align

  253. to what we preach. Are we together? Yes. It has

  254. to align what we preach. Now the next one, the

  255. next context, next context is geographic or geographical

  256. context. How many have we discussed now? Canonical?

  257. immediate context literally right historical

  258. and cultural context non geographical context

  259. geographical context understanding geographical

  260. context of the Bible is an essential key to unlocking

  261. true meaning of text so we're trying to say that

  262. You have to pay attention to where things are

  263. happening Pastor if I started touching us or

  264. Helping us to understand the importance of why

  265. Jesus would tell his disciples go to Jerusalem

  266. and wait Did you want to something why do you

  267. say go to Samaria? He was particular go to Jerusalem

  268. We learn that so geography is important Things

  269. don't just happen Jesus don't just go anywhere

  270. The first thing you understand about geography

  271. is that that it proves the Bible is rooted in

  272. history It proves that the Bible is rooted in

  273. history, meaning that it's not a fairy tale.

  274. It's not abstract. You can verify all these things.

  275. They are not names of celestial bodies. They

  276. are not aeons and geographical location on the

  277. space. They are real places. That happened. Are

  278. we together? They are real places, no? I had

  279. the privilege to go to some of these places.

  280. Even though I don't like the way some people

  281. were doing with the tin, because they idolize

  282. those places, they understand. But it's good

  283. when you have the opportunity to visit some of

  284. those places. Tango, we are in a place also.

  285. Let's open to actor tin. We're in Cyprus, actor

  286. tin. Glory to Jesus. Want you to look at verse,

  287. verse 3, then having fasted and prayed and laid

  288. hands on them, they sent them away. So being

  289. sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to

  290. what? Seleucia. And from there they sailed to

  291. where? They were a Cyprus, a name of a celestial

  292. body. Eh? It's a geographical location. We know

  293. it. Today we are in it. We are here. Huh? And

  294. when, verse five, and when they arrive in where?

  295. Salamis. Many of us have gone to Salamis several

  296. times. Is that correct? Yes. We saw the theater.

  297. We saw where Paul was preaching. We saw all those

  298. things. Are we together? Salamis. They preached

  299. the word of God in synagogue of the Jewish. They

  300. also had John as their assistant. What's six?

  301. Now, when they had gone through the island of

  302. Patmot, Patmot is just close here. Here. Did

  303. you understand what I'm trying to say? Yes. It's

  304. not, that's why when you read Bible, you see,

  305. you know, you will see, you will see, you feel

  306. it. These are real places. Even if you have not

  307. traveled to those places, at least Tango, you

  308. are here. Please don't leave this place. Go to

  309. Salamis and see the place. It will not do to

  310. you anything spiritual, but it will do something

  311. to you in understanding. It means you are reading

  312. something real. It's not a deception. This is

  313. why sometimes I laugh. How can somebody come

  314. after Jesus lived 700 years ago? I mean after

  315. Jesus lived 700 and he said Jesus didn't die.

  316. And that an angel told him. And then you have

  317. eyewitness in history. The Romans wrote about

  318. it. The Jews wrote about it. His own disciples

  319. were more than 500 which he appeared to them.

  320. I don't mean far away those who were with him.

  321. Who do you believe? Somebody who came 700 years

  322. later and said angel told him. Or someone who

  323. were with him. I mean, there are some things

  324. very easy to disprove. Did you understand what

  325. I'm saying? Are we together? So, what are we

  326. saying? I am saying that because this Bible is

  327. real, it's an evidence that God is interested

  328. in humanity. He's working among men. They are

  329. places we know. They are not abstract. So pay

  330. attention. So in many instances, those geography

  331. are in themselves a message. It's not just only

  332. that we know that they prove that our faith can

  333. be traced accurately, but themselves, the geographies

  334. became a message too. Now notice only that you

  335. know that God speaks through culture. God also

  336. speaks through geography. Oh Are you with me?

  337. Are you with me? So if you misunderstand this

  338. on geography, you'll miss a lot. The valleys,

  339. the mountains. Man of God was reading to us Malachi

  340. 4, right? along specific rivers. Things you can

  341. touch, but they can communicate things. We have

  342. actual mountains. Mount Sinai, River Jordan,

  343. the Red Sea. All of them mean something. The

  344. Sea of Galilee. So geographic context? Prove

  345. the gospel is not a made -up story. You understand?

  346. As I told you, you cannot be able to say Jesus

  347. is from India. How? His name, his family, his

  348. everything does not speak that he has any connection

  349. there. Are you with me? Are you with me? Yes.

  350. It shows our faith is tied to read facts, not

  351. feebles. It supports eyewitness accounts. And

  352. it clarifies the intent of the original author.

  353. This is the reason why we are studying this geographical

  354. context. Because our major thought is that we

  355. want to understand the intent of the author.

  356. So in studying and reading and understanding

  357. geographical context, it helps you to also comprehend

  358. the intent of the author. The writers, with understanding

  359. of their original readers. They do not stop to

  360. explain why the journey was dangerous. But it

  361. also can communicate. Sometimes when you are

  362. reading the Bible, you don't need to be told

  363. that this journey is dangerous. By just observing

  364. the geography, it's already communicating to

  365. you that. Are we together? Look at this look.

  366. Look. This story of a Samaritan, right? Luke

    Luke 10:25

  367. chapter 10 verse 25 Luke 10 25 He said, And behold,

  368. a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, saying,

  369. Teacher What shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  370. He said to him what is written in the law? What

  371. is your reading of it? So he answered and said

  372. you shall love the Lord and Then your God with

  373. all your heart with all your soul with all your

  374. mind and with all your what? Your strength. Let

  375. me just go to 30 then Jesus answered and said,

  376. a certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.

  377. Note that word. He went where? Down. Did he say

  378. up or down? Down. A certain man went down. You

  379. see that word down? You have to pay attention

  380. to certain things now. You see that word down?

  381. It's very important. Because by the time you

  382. look at the geographical location, because he

  383. said went down from where Jerusalem to where

  384. to Jericho and fell among thieves that word down

  385. is a description of geography it already by the

  386. time you you look at it in in real time i mean

  387. in in maybe maps you will now understand jesus

  388. you see the reason why he didn't mention a there

  389. were coughs here there were stones here there

  390. were these because he was not communicating to

  391. you Did you understand what I'm trying to say?

  392. He's communicating to people who are familiar

  393. with the terrain. So by just using the word down,

  394. they already understood what he was saying. But

  395. us today, we will need to investigate what is

  396. down. Was Jerusalem up? Because you have never

  397. gone to Jerusalem. So you can go in and say,

  398. okay, let me see the horizon. Was Jerusalem up

  399. and this and that? Or what does it mean down?

  400. Now you will now understand that truly the wrote

  401. from Jerusalem to Jericho is a horrific journey.

  402. In fact, I did some study and I discovered Jerusalem

  403. was about 700 meters, that's about 2 ,500 feet

  404. above sea level. And Jericho lies below, you

  405. understand, about 258 meters below sea level,

  406. which means that What is saying to say that Jerusalem

  407. there is more than twice you understand the height

  408. that's one You get what I'm trying to see yes

  409. So when the person is coming down and it's a

  410. rocky environment It's not really like a like

  411. a straight path You have to be dodging like this

  412. But you are coming down That is why robbers can

  413. can lock in upon some particular place so that

  414. when you are coming you will not see them because

  415. it's not a direct route mountains you have to

  416. you have to navigate rocks and mountains so robbers

  417. can thieves can block can hide somewhere and

  418. wait for you and they will ambush you they understood

  419. at the time when he said down but you and me

  420. by the time we go and look at it and say oh so

  421. that's how it is you will appreciate reading

  422. that text So the terrain will tell you how vulnerable

  423. to the man that was hit by thieves was So today

  424. it is important to pay attention and there are

  425. so many things Help me there John chapter 1 verse

    John 1:5

  426. 5 The Bible say Jesus went up Hmm John there's

  427. a one sorry five verse one five verse one he

  428. said after this there was a feast of the Jews

  429. and Jesus went up to what to Jerusalem so you

  430. already understand I've already given you Jerusalem

  431. is about 2500 feet above sea level that's about

  432. 700 and something or something like 60 there

  433. about meters above syllable. Go back to John

    John 1:28

  434. 1 verse 28. John 1, 28. These things were done

  435. in what? In Betebrah. Beyond the what? The Jordan,

  436. where John was baptized. That's a description

  437. of geography. He said in Betebrah, right, or

  438. Bethany. Some Bible verse will say Bethany. He

  439. said it is across or beyond the Jordan. And that's

  440. actually the description. It's a real geography.

  441. If you go, you will see it that exactly. Where

  442. John was baptized, Psalms 125 verse 2. Psalms

    Psalms 125:2 Psalms 125:2

  443. 125 verse 2. As the mountains surround Jerusalem.

  444. Do mountains surround Jerusalem? Yes. Did you

  445. get what I'm trying to say? Yeah? Are we together?

  446. That's exactly. mountain surrounds Jerusalem.

  447. You know I was laughing when I was listening

  448. to one debate so if you were trying to claim

  449. it's one Muslim guy you want to claim that that

  450. is it Pharaoh I mean the mix of Pharaoh as the

  451. time of Jesus and Did you understand what I'm

  452. trying to say? Sometimes you laugh, you know

  453. why? Because you don't need the Bible to disprove

  454. this. You know why? Because this is just pure

  455. history. Did you understand what I'm trying to

  456. say? Yes, this is why the Bible is clear. It's

  457. real. It's not made up stories. You can verify

  458. it. You understand? You can verify it. So I've

  459. said in it that God speaks through geography

  460. and so this geography could also Not just only

  461. that can give us light to understand what was

  462. happening, but you can also you go to use it

  463. to speak spiritual realities Egypt, Canaan, Galilee,

  464. Mount Zion, Mount Sinai, Red Sea, River Jordan

  465. among others are used by God to paint a picture

  466. of spiritual realities. Let me give you some

  467. few examples. 1 Corinthians 10. Look at 1 Corinthians

  468. 10. Look at verse 1. Moreover, brethren, I do

  469. not want you to be unaware that all our fathers

  470. were under the cloud, all passed through the

  471. sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the

  472. cloud and in the sea. All ate the same spiritual

  473. food, all drank the same spiritual drink, for

  474. the drank of that spiritual rock. That followed

  475. them and the rock was Christ's verse 5 said but

  476. with most of them God was not pleased For their

  477. bodies were scattered in the wilderness Are we

  478. together? God was not pleased why because of

  479. what Moses have preached what that means is that

  480. the Red Sea represents Moses immersing Israel

  481. in the teachings, in his teachings. That's what

  482. it means. When he said they were baptized into

  483. Moses in the cloud and in the sea. The Red Sea,

  484. you know what I'm saying, is a speaking, a communication

  485. of Moses immersing these people in the teachings.

  486. Are we together? Unfortunately, they refused

  487. to believe. That's why he said, but with most

  488. of them God was not what? Was not pleased. It

  489. is impossible to please God without what? Without

  490. faith. Hebrews 11 6. So they didn't please God

  491. because they didn't exercise faith. and what

  492. Moses has amassed them. Man of God was communicating.

  493. He told them. Understand? The last part he was

  494. saying. He told them. You see, that agreement

  495. they agree. As if they heard Moses. No. It's

  496. those are there too where they are finding things

  497. difficult in Egypt. So their believing is they

  498. are believing of their deliverance out of that

  499. place. You understand? but not that they believe

  500. Moses in the reality he was communicating they

  501. just believe him in that yes we know God sent

  502. you give us our physical deliverance let's get

  503. out of here but they did not believe the real

  504. thing the big picture of what God was communicating

  505. and that's why God was not pleased with them

  506. so you can see Red Sea The crossing of the Ressi

  507. is a crossing of baptism and that baptism is

  508. a mansion in the teachings of Moses The gospel

  509. he preached them. He said the same gospel that

  510. was preached to us was also preached to them

  511. Hebrews chapter 4, right verse 2 But it did not

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  512. profit them Not being mixed with faith in them

  513. that heard it That means they heard it. They

  514. refused to believe it Hebrews chapter 12. Go

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  515. to Hebrews chapter 12. Look at verse 22. I'm

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  516. trying to show us that geography can be used

  517. by God to speak spiritual realities. It can speak

  518. revelation. So be careful as you study. Don't

  519. neglect things. Are we together? Hallelujah.

  520. Amen. Look at 22. He says, that but you have

  521. come to Mount Zion. Are we together? You see,

  522. before in the Old Testament he said, he said,

  523. upon Mount Zion there shall be deliverance. Did

  524. you hear me? You know, don't think that he's

  525. talking about a physical place. is using a physical

  526. mountain to speak about spiritual reality. That's

  527. why a man that believe has come to Mount Zion.

  528. It is in Mount Zion there is deliverance. So

  529. God is using a physical mountain with a spiritual

  530. communication. That Mount Zion is a church. That

  531. Mount Zion is God's presence. That's what it

  532. represents. Mount Zion and then he continued

  533. the city of the living God in case you are in

  534. doubt what he's saying the heavenly Jerusalem

  535. what about Sinai just go some verses ahead verse

  536. 18 he said for you have not come to the mountain

  537. that may be touched that burn with fire and with

  538. blackness and darkness and tempest and the sound

  539. of a trumpet and the voice of words so that you

  540. who heard it bet that the word should not be

  541. spoken to them anymore for they could not endure

  542. what was commanded and if so as much as the beast

  543. touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot

  544. with an arrow." And so terrified that even Moses

  545. himself, he said, I was exceedingly afraid and

  546. tremble. Even the man who enlisted the angels,

  547. when they started displaying their things in

  548. the sun. And that's why The writer of Hebrew

  549. was contrasting that. He said, believe us, we

  550. have not come to that mountain, but you have

  551. come to the mountain, which is Mount Zion. We

  552. have not come to Mount Sinai. Are we together?

  553. But we have come to what? Mount Zion. Amen. Are

  554. we together? So Mount Sinai was a picture of

  555. bondage, law and sin. Mount Zion is a picture

  556. of what? Freedom picture of deliverance picture

  557. of the church Geography with spiritual meaning

  558. Look at Galatians chapter 4 Paul again made it

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  559. clear here. He made it clear more clearer here

  560. Are we together Galatians chapter 4 verse 24

    Galatians 4:24

  561. He said, which things are symbolic? Did you see

  562. that? So they are used as expressions. For these

  563. are the two covenants. He said, one from where?

  564. Mount Sinai. Which is what? Which give birth

  565. to what? Who are you with me? Are you with me?

  566. Which give birth to bondage? Which is haga. For

  567. this hugger is Mount Sinai in Arabia and correspond

  568. to Jerusalem which is and is in bondage with

  569. her children So he said that Jerusalem in the

  570. Sun is the place of freedom He's saying that

  571. the place of bondage is Mount Sinai Are you with

  572. me are you with me amen So you can see how God

  573. uses geography to communicate also revelation.

  574. That's why it's good for us to pay attention

  575. to geography. Look at Hebrews chapter 3. Hebrews

Hebrews 3 chapter mention Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  576. chapter 3. Go back to that Hebrews verse 16.

  577. I want to show you again another one. Canon.

  578. Are we together? Or let's start with Egypt. I

  579. think we should start with Egypt before we go

  580. to Canaan. Amen? Amen? Exodus chapter 13 verse

    Exodus 13:3

  581. 3. Exodus 13 verse 3. He said, and Moses said

    Exodus 13:3

  582. to the people, remember this day in which you

  583. went out of where? Out of where? The house of

  584. what? Bondage. So Egypt is described as a picture

  585. or a figure of bondage. He repeated that. Look

  586. at chapter 20, verse 2, chapter 20. verse 2 I

  587. am the Lord your God who brought you out of the

  588. land of Egypt out of the house of bondage again

  589. Egypt as a house of bondage Deuteronomy chapter

    Deuteronomy 5:6

  590. 5 verse 6 Deuteronomy 5 verse 6 He said I am

    Deuteronomy 5:6

  591. the Lord your God who brought you out of the

  592. land of Egypt out of the house of bondage out

  593. of the house of bondage Look at how even a the

  594. Bible describe it here in Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  595. When he was talking concerning Moses 11 24 Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:24

  596. 11 verse 24 He said, by faith Moses, when he

  597. became of age, refused to be called the sons

  598. of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer

  599. affliction with the people of God than to enjoy

  600. the passing pleasure of sin, esteeming the reproach

  601. of Christ greater riches than the treasure in

  602. Egypt. Look at it, esteeming Christ. than the

  603. pleasure in Egypt. This is not a physical thing

  604. so that you don't say in Egypt. It's a spiritual

  605. reality. You understand? For He what? Looked

  606. to the reward. So Egypt is depicted as a place

  607. of sin. A place of bondage. What about Canaan?

  608. Hebrews chapter 3. Look at Hebrews chapter 3

Hebrews 3 chapter mention Hebrews 3:16

  609. verse 16 The promise was for them to move to

  610. freedom Hebrews chapter 3 verse 16 for Who having

    Hebrews 3:16

  611. heard believed indeed was it not all who came

  612. out of Egypt that is they came out of the house

  613. of bondage led by Moses Now, with whom was he

  614. angry forty years? He said, Was he not with those

  615. who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?

  616. And to whom did he swear that they will not enter

  617. his rest, but to those who did not obey? we see

  618. that they could not enter rest in because of

  619. unbelief. We said they died in the wilderness.

  620. So he was using a communication, you know, although

  621. they were moving from Egypt's bondage, their

  622. destination is the promised land, Canaan, but

  623. they couldn't enter because of unbelief. So Canaan

  624. is a picture of rest. When you are removed from

  625. bondage, but they die in the wilderness Are we

  626. together they die in the wilderness, of course,

  627. there are other scriptures you can write it Numbers

    Numbers 14:27

  628. chapter 14 verse 27 Numbers 14 27 to 34 Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6:23

  629. chapter 6 verse 23 Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse

    Deuteronomy 6:23

  630. 23 Let me just say this one lastly here Galilee

  631. You see Galilee also has a spiritual meaning

  632. Galilee Isaiah chapter Well, let me read Matthew

  633. because Matthew quoted Isaiah chapter 1 And sorry

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  634. chapter 9 verse 1 and 2. Let me read Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  635. chapter 4 So that we can read the two texts together

  636. Matthew chapter 4 verse 15. Matthew chapter 4

    Matthew 4:15 Matthew 4:15–16

  637. verse 15 to 16. He said the land of Zebulun and

  638. the land of Naphtali by the way of the sea beyond

  639. the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. He said

  640. the people who sat in darkness have seen a great

  641. light. and upon those who sat in the region and

  642. shadow of the light as what? As dawn. Do you

  643. know why when Jesus is eaten it's necessary that

  644. Jesus will have to start his ministry in Galilee?

  645. When he finished his resurrection he told his

  646. disciples, tell them to go meet me in where?

  647. In Galilee. Listen, it's a communication. something.

  648. What Jesus is saying that, what man of God is

  649. teaching us, is setting the stage for greater

  650. works. Now no more among Israel you are to go

  651. to the wall. Galilee is a doorway to the nations.

  652. It's called Galilee of the Gentiles. What Jesus

  653. is communicating is that now I am releasing you

  654. to the wall. And that's why he demonstrated By

  655. going to a physical place. It's not a mistake.

  656. It is already a prophecy It's not just for going

  657. sick when you read glory to God You you have

  658. to be very careful some words In the Sun when

  659. the when Jesus was to pass through, you know,

  660. normally when you are moving when you are going

  661. to a Jerusalem you have to pass through Samaria

  662. Many don't want to pass through that because

  663. of the discrimination. But the Bible says, but

  664. Jesus hurt. Meaning that it became necessary

  665. that you will have to pass through Samaria. The

  666. reason is because there is an appointment. in

  667. the Sun spiritually because Jesus Christ is doing

  668. things deliberately to break certain things so

  669. every movement you move it might look geographical

  670. but it's not it's communicating something so

  671. if you miss this reading as you go you think

  672. you have to see thou says the Lord thou says

  673. the Lord you're going to miss a lot of things

  674. that's why you have to pay attention Are we together?

  675. So geography will turn what sometimes may be

  676. spiritual, that is locked up to be unveiled.

  677. You will see that from what we have already studied.

  678. You see, geography is explaining spiritual concept.

  679. Unbelief, salvation, deliverance. Are we together?

  680. Did you see that? That once you mention a place,

  681. it already communicates something. Are we together?

  682. That is exactly. So, bringing map into your Bible

  683. study changes words. from just flat black ink

  684. on white pages into vibrant three -dimensional

  685. world where God's voice speaks with clarity.

  686. So I want to encourage you, don't neglect geography

  687. in your Bible study. Are we together? Don't do

  688. what? Don't neglect geography. When you are reading,

  689. you find a place, just say something, something,

  690. something. Don't just pass anyhow. can you pull

  691. a map and just try to because what you are doing

  692. is that you are trying to travel back and sit

  693. where the audience sat because you are not there

  694. so sometimes you will have to pull the map because

  695. when Jesus or when the apostles were communicating

  696. they were communicating to audience who already

  697. are familiar with the terrain so when they speak

  698. small things like for example down they already

  699. know what they are saying but you we don't know

  700. because when you say down down how so you have

  701. to pull them up and begin to look at it then

  702. you now understand are we together amen hallelujah

  703. okay let me give one more supernatural context

  704. i'm going to discuss this maybe probably in a

  705. separate video but let me give an introduction

  706. the bible also have supernatural context Not

  707. just only on the material. You see that's the

  708. reason why we have to communicate in this way.

  709. It has supernatural context. Understanding the

  710. Bible also requires grasping the supernatural

  711. context. A worldview. So supernatural context

  712. means a worldview where the physical and the

  713. spiritual realm are constantly interacting. Meaning

  714. that The writer's worldview in those days is

  715. not the same with our worldview today. Even though

  716. we need to improve. Because the world has not

  717. changed. Do you understand what I'm saying? The

  718. world has not what? Has not changed. No, I think

  719. Pasukosi used to emphasize that in the sun. Don't

  720. think that everything is normal. Yeah, when you

  721. watch what is happening around the world in the

  722. sun, don't be too naive To think that is just

  723. normal Hmm that men just do it that they that

  724. way Monogathe just read a scripture Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  725. chapter 2 the spirit who is at work in where

  726. in the children of disobedient So don't see a

  727. man hiding in his ways and think it's a normal

  728. thing Did you get what I'm trying to say? Yes.

  729. Hallelujah. So without this framework of understanding

  730. the supernatural context, strictly literal or

  731. modern scientific reading can miss the intended

  732. spiritual and doctrinal meaning. When we read

  733. the Bible like a cast -iron Literal strictly

  734. scientific When I see day I Think as day today.

  735. You are going to miss a lot of if I see moon

  736. I'd always think as we think today. You're going

  737. to miss something Meaning that is that's why

  738. we said when you come to the Bible is not a free

  739. flat thing You can read moon and star, literal,

  740. in other places. That one is a tool. But you

  741. cannot take how you read Genesis. That's how

  742. you read First Kings and Second Kings. That's

  743. how you read Ecclesiastes. That's how you go

  744. to read the Epistos. How about now? The same

  745. way. Just flat. You're going to miss a lot. Because

  746. today we have believers who wants to always have

  747. a short cut you know we like uh sharp sharp things

  748. now you understand indo me you know i've been

  749. trying to stop some people staying indo me understand

  750. but the point is that because we like sharp sharp

  751. things something that we just get is sharp fast

  752. food fast fast fast things are we together but

  753. please calm down this bible the implication of

  754. taking it out of context is too high. Understand?

  755. And that's why you have to calm down. Please,

  756. be patient. Be patient. Don't be in a rush. Don't

  757. be in a rush. Calm down. We live in a modern

  758. world. Today is a material world. It's a scientific

  759. world. Where we see universe through microscope,

  760. through telescope, through law of physics. That's

  761. how we see the world mostly. But when you come

  762. to the Bible, the writers live in a different

  763. world than ours. In a worldview, we are the physical

  764. and the spiritual. Remember that's why we take

  765. time for some of us who have been here when I

  766. was dealing with the issue of the law in our

  767. series about the issues about women liberty.

  768. You must have seen that we discuss how these

  769. people their view about angels. Did you understand

  770. what I'm trying to say? Their view about spirit

  771. beings. That's the issue. And this is important.

  772. To them they see the unseen world, not just us.

  773. as something different. They see the unseen world

  774. as real as the seen. Are we together? Look at

  775. Revelation 9. Revelation what? 9 verse 1. Revelation

  776. 9. Then the fifth angels sounded and I saw a

  777. star falling from heaven to the earth. To him

  778. was given the key to the bottomless pit. That

  779. is the star was given a key. Are we together?

  780. I mean if you just read in the adults with scientific

  781. means you will likely see like this is a star

  782. falling I mean to the earth maybe one of these

  783. meteorites and maybe ah please let's be careful

  784. before it will cause ecological disaster but

  785. no that's not what he's saying John immediate

  786. use of him he said I saw a star From heaven to

  787. the earth in case you don't want to confuse it.

  788. He said to him Hmm you see that he said to him

  789. Was given and then he said he was giving a key

  790. him was giving a key is to tell you that that

  791. star Is a personality Is not the star at the

  792. top defined by gases Are we together? No. This

  793. star has an action. This star has an intelligence.

  794. Did you understand what I'm saying? It's not

  795. defined by nature that the star has an intelligence.

  796. The star has an assignment. It's given a key.

  797. It's a hymn. In ancient... apocalyptic writings

  798. or context, a falling star most time is seen

  799. as a falling angel or angelic entity. In fact,

  800. just move a little bit to chapter 12. Look at

  801. chapter 12, verse 3, Revelation 12 verse 3, and

    Revelation 12:3

  802. another sign appeared in the heaven, behold a

  803. great fiery dragon. having seven heads and ten

  804. horns and seven dead ends on his head his tail

  805. drew a thought of stars from heaven and threw

  806. them on the earth and the dragon stood before

  807. the woman who was ready to give birth to to devour

  808. her child as soon as it was born. When you read

  809. that you say ah ah Stars who the dragon wipe

  810. is a what you call in the sun But when you read

  811. more you now understand was Was six or let me

  812. read verse 7 is there and war broke out in heaven

  813. Michael and his angels fought with the dragon

  814. and the dragon and his angel fought but they

  815. did not prevail nor was a place found for them

  816. in the heaven any longer so the dragon was cast

  817. out and the serpent of old called the devil and

  818. satan who deceived the world he was cast out

  819. He was cast to the earth and his angels were

  820. cast out with him. Do you see that? So the dragon

  821. is Satan. The stars were the fully angels that

  822. came with him, his angels. That is the stars

  823. Isn't just some cosmic event or some things are

  824. threatening the solar system He's talking about

  825. spiritual rebellion here The fully angelic beings

  826. who sided with the enemy who sided with Satan

  827. Therefore reading the Bible with a scientific

  828. lens will strip you of the reading of the scriptural

  829. text the way it's original audience wrote it

  830. you know I read one book sometimes they will

  831. read Matthew chapter 25 about the parable of

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  832. the talent and then they will be given counsel

  833. of how to make money using that I mean please

  834. now you know the issue is that is that the intern

  835. when Jesus was writing that was he giving business

  836. advice there You see, you are misusing the intent

  837. of the author. You are misusing. After all, if

  838. you want business ideas, that's nowhere to go.

  839. The same thing we say, stop ideating with these

  840. people who want to defend. The world is also

  841. a number of years. Leave them. Science has to

  842. know how to correct themselves. I tell you the

  843. truth. Science knows how to correct. They have

  844. corrected many things. If you have been in science,

  845. you understand. All the Dalton's atomic theory

  846. and all those things, you understand? Atom is

  847. an indivisible part of it. I mean, all those

  848. things. Is it divisible now? I mean, who changes

  849. it? Who changes it? You are not the one now.

  850. Allow them. They will change it. Do you understand

  851. what I'm trying to say? You don't need to fight.

  852. They will change. Leave them. You understand?

  853. They are already fighting and changing already

  854. the law about evolution. So don't worry. Calm

  855. down. Just preach the word in season and out

  856. of season. Do you understand what I'm saying?

  857. So leave them. So, you see, you will miss it.

  858. Because even though Moses was using the creation

  859. story, his intent was not to give how the world

  860. was created and this and that and that. I mean,

  861. that's it. You will miss it. Because by the time

  862. you read the entire Genesis 1, by the time you

  863. come to Genesis chapter 2, and God rested, and

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  864. then you read the epistles, you come to where

  865. we read Hebrews chapter 4. When you read down,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  866. it made reference to Genesis chapter 2. Moses

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  867. was writing that he was not talking about those

  868. things. His focus is to communicate the gospel.

  869. And that is why the rest of God is salvation.

  870. The creation story about him is a description

  871. of the redemptive work of Christ. And after he

  872. has finished the work, he rests. What is rest?

  873. It doesn't mean just to stay idle. It means to

  874. enter into the position of authority, to enter

  875. into a position of glory. That's mean by rest.

  876. His indwelling, His ascension is called rest.

  877. That means Christ now is resting in you. It means

  878. He's living in you. That's what it means. Are

  879. we together? So, and that's why we must trust

  880. God to read the Bible. in the author's intent.

  881. Amen. Amen. If you understand this way, you will

  882. now not be struggling. You will not be struggling

  883. when you see some certain discussion, even in

  884. the Epistles. He now said, though we walk in

  885. the flesh, we do not wage war after the flesh.

  886. For the weapon of our warfare. They are not cannot

  887. did you want something? Are we together? He will

  888. say again and then tell you how we watched which

  889. the war He said we we wage the war against principalities

  890. and powers Against rulers of the darkness So

  891. don't be sitting here and think everything is

  892. physical. It's not. These people that wrote it,

  893. they have an understanding that though we are

  894. on earth in the material world, what influences

  895. this material world is not just only in the material.

  896. If you understand, you will be conscious of the

  897. spirit world. Are we together? that is what a

  898. Supernatural context of the Bible. We're going

  899. to explore that more hopefully subsequently Now

  900. let me introduce something before tomorrow understand

  901. The contextualization of the scripture and the

  902. consequence abuses the contour from the word

  903. context, decontextualization of scriptures and

  904. the consequent abuses. Now, what I intend to

  905. do here is to handle, because we don't want to,

  906. we're living in a real world. Tango Pasofre started

  907. talking about the issue of transgender and so

  908. many of this. We will both, as God help us, Through,

  909. along the air, as the air moves, we will have

  910. to both review what has happened in the past

  911. in the horrible history of the church, because

  912. we want us to know how some things have been,

  913. how the Bible has been used as a weapon in the

  914. sun. Because the problem that was facing some

  915. of them some of them we still have them today

  916. in the Sun and Then to see how we can also help

  917. to know how to explain certain things in scriptures

  918. even our problems of today Are we together? Amen?

  919. Now I want you to understand that The most dangerous

  920. lies Please I beg in the name of God to be sensitive

  921. with this listen the most dangerous lies that

  922. has been spread perpetuated in history were not

  923. told by atheists they were not told by who by

  924. atheists they were spoken by people holding a

  925. bible very hard to accept. The most clear treatment

  926. of humanity we have seen, some of it were held

  927. perpetuated by people holding the Bible. I am

  928. not saying unbelievers, I am saying believers,

  929. leaders of churches. So what we are trying to

  930. say that from all that we have said when you

  931. ripped when you remove when you caught a way

  932. a verse out of its setting out of its context

  933. You are weaponizing it to perpetuate evil What

  934. we call it is the methodology of Satan Meaning

  935. You take the word and remove it out of its context.

  936. You will do harm with it. Remember that the scripture

  937. is profitable, but once you remove it out of

  938. its context, it becomes injurious. It becomes

  939. harmful. Are you with me? Are you with me? Are

  940. you with me? That's why Paul says it is a spirit

  941. in a son that give it life He said that the letters

  942. kill it But the spirit do what? Gives life. Are

  943. you with me? Let me repeat again. He says the

  944. letters kill it But the spirit gives what life?

  945. Mean that this same Bible interpreted accurately,

  946. it gives life. This Bible also, once removed

  947. out of context, it results to death. And so I

  948. want you to pay attention. Second Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  949. chapter 3, that's what Paul say there. In fact,

  950. we also saw in Romans, he said the commandment

  951. which was intended to give life now has been

  952. found to give death. All this I'm trying to tell

  953. you the implication of removing what it takes

  954. out of context. So many of the major abuses and

  955. tyrannies in history were perpetuated by the

  956. violation of the intent of the author of scriptures.

  957. Let me give you some examples and start with

  958. that. Slavery in America. Write number one, slavery

  959. in America. Slavery in America. Now, at that

  960. time, there is some people we call them the pro

  961. -slavery theologians. We call them the pro -slavery

  962. theologians in the American South. They build

  963. the theology to defend slavery so that it should

  964. be perpetuated. Let me just give you some of

  965. these people before we start to discuss some

  966. of the how did they use the Bible to defend?

  967. the perpetuation of slavery Number one James,

  968. maybe you are you might have time to I mean you

  969. can go and just read about them That's why I'm

  970. giving you in the Sun James Henley Turnwell James

  971. Henley that is T H O R N W E double L James Henley

  972. Torwell was a South Carolina Oh Pastor, he's

  973. a Presbyterian pastor and theologian. In fact,

  974. he's a professor of theology at Colombian Theological

  975. Seminary. So I'm not talking about some sumo

  976. sumo built Brazil. I'm talking about professors

  977. who were pastors who later become professors,

  978. you understand? He argued that the relationship

  979. between master and slave is divinely ordained

  980. and consistent with God's word. Don't worry.

  981. Let me just mention their name. I'm coming back

  982. to give you their arguments. The next one is

  983. Benjamin Morgan. Benjamin Morgan. Palmer. This

  984. one is also a pastor. in the sun. He's a Presbyterian

  985. pastor. Benjamin Morgan Palmer, Morgan Palmer,

  986. P -A -L -M -E -R, in the sun. In fact, this one

  987. is, this one is even a very severe thing, you

  988. know, sun. You know, he preached one message.

  989. He calls it Thanksgiving. He called it the Thanksgiving

  990. Salmon. In the 1960s, where he supported the

  991. southern part of the United States, which is

  992. then they were, you know, in the United States

  993. then, they had all these states, that's why they

  994. are called the United States of America. So then

  995. they have the southern and they have the northern

  996. part, understand? And then the southern part,

  997. there are 11 states then in the northern part.

  998. He called it the confederates. And these people,

  999. they are the ones, they are the major people

1000. who want slavery. They still want to continue

1001. with that. So, the, a someone that he preached,

1002. he calls it, let me see, the someone, yes, this

1003. is the name of the someone, the title. You can

1004. find these online. He said the slavery, he called

1005. it slavery, a divine trust. duty of the South

1006. to preserve and perpetuate it. That's the title

1007. of the Psalm. You can imagine somebody, one person

1008. come to this, he said, he calls it slavery a

1009. divine trust. Column, duty of the South to preserve

1010. and perpetuate it. Then we have Baptist pastors.

  1011. One of them is Ton Ton. That is T -H -O -R -N

1012. -T -O -N. That is Ton Ton. String fellow. Ton

1013. Ton String fellow. String fellow just from string

1014. and fellow. Understand? It's a Baptist pastor.

1015. In fact, these people were the one who caused

1016. the division to break the Baptist Church into

1017. the South, Southern Convention in the sun. They

1018. break it because the Northern part don't want

1019. to agree with it, so they broke the sun, caused

1020. division. In the 1960, he also published a book

1021. called Scriptural and Statistic View in Favor

1022. of Slavery. You cannot imagine monogod. He even

1023. said with statistics. Hmm? That's the title of

1024. the book. Scriptural and statistical views in

1025. favor of slavery. In favor of slavery. Then another

1026. Baptist pastor, Richard Fuller. Richard Fuller

1027. is also a Baptist pastor. He's a pro -slavery

1028. theologian. He's part of those people who also

1029. helped the establishment of the Southern Baptists

1030. Convention, where they broke away from the North.

1031. In fact, there is a book in which the Richard

1032. Fuller, in 1947, Fuller and Brown University

1033. President Francis Wayland. There's another guy,

1034. he's a Brown University President Francis Wayland

1035. because Wayland is against Fuller's position

1036. of pro -slavery. So what they did was they now

1037. publish a book, Fuller giving pro points and

1038. then Francis Wayland giving against slavery.

1039. The book again is called Domestic Slavery Considered

1040. as scriptural institution. So more or less, the

1041. book is like a debate between the two of them.

1042. You understand? Let me say it again. The book

1043. is titled, Domestic Slavery Considered as a Scriptural

1044. Institution. So let me give more, just two more.

1045. Because there are many. To tell you that is an

1046. arsenal of men supporting that. We have George

1047. Doot Armstrong. This one is a Presbyterian. George

  1048. Doot D -O -D -D Armstrong. From the word arm

1049. and strong. George Doot Armstrong. This one is

1050. also he argued so much that God created different

1051. stations in life that this is arguing that God

1052. is the one responsible for social hierarchy Social

1053. hierarchy That the social hierarchy helped to

1054. emancipate the enslaved people. You can imagine

1055. that. You are arguing that the slavery is helping

1056. the slave people. You know, he also authored

1057. a book. You know these people, they are formed

  1058. a very, it's a cartel. He also authored a book

1059. called The Christian Doctrine of Slavery. The

1060. Christian Doctrine of Slavery. the Christian

1061. doctrine of slavery. That's the title of the

1062. book. Then the last person I will mention is

1063. Charles Colcock Jones. Charles Colcock. C -O

  1064. -L -C -O -C -K. Colcock. Jones. Jones. In fact,

1065. this person his own is not like the other one

1066. you understand this person the jones let me tell

1067. you jones one is a little bit interesting they

1068. call him apostle of the slave to slaves now his

1069. own is not just only that he is using the bible

1070. to keep slave but that he wants to preach christ

1071. for slaves to be born again Do you understand

1072. what I'm trying to say? So he wants to preach

1073. to the slaves to be born again and his intent

1074. is not just because he wants them into the kingdom

1075. of God Yeah, his intent is that by converting

1076. them to Christianity to become easier to brainwash

1077. them with the scriptures of those swans So that's

1078. why you're calling him an apostle. So he believed

1079. in evangelism and the evangelism will make enslaved

1080. people more obedient and make the plantation

1081. system more stable. Because if you have people,

1082. although you can use Bible to support the people

1083. at the society level, those who are holding up

1084. to big powers and like the politician and the

1085. rest, you can use Bible to defend it, you understand?

1086. But then if you want to make the slavery more

1087. systemized, then that means you have to just

1088. not just only convince the aristocrats you understand

1089. you have to come down and also preach Jesus to

1090. these people because by doing so you will you

1091. will ensure they become more obedient so his

1092. work focus on converting slaves to Christianity

1093. while ultimately reinforcing the established

1094. racial and social hierarchy of that time. Hallelujah.

1095. Are we together? Now, before we close, what is

1096. the theological argument? What are the things

1097. they were holding and promoting that supports

1098. slavery? Now number one using the Old Testament

1099. so they use the Old Testament very well They

1100. use the Old Testament patriarch they argue that

1101. this patriarch owns slaves and the Levitican

1102. laws permitted the purchase of burnt people they

1103. permit people to purchase servants They say the

1104. Old Patriarch, the Old Testament Patriarch, like

1105. Abraham and the rest, they own slaves. And also

1106. the Levitican laws permit to purchase a person.

1107. Let me give you some scriptures. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 12:5

  1108. 12 verse 5. Genesis 12, 5. Genesis 14, 14. Genesis

    Genesis 16:1–3

  1109. 16 verse 1 to 3 Genesis 26 verse 14 Genesis 31

    Genesis 26:14 Genesis 31:41

  1110. verse 41 Job chapter 1 verse 1 to 3 Leviticus

    Job 1:1–3 Leviticus 25:44–46

  1111. chapter 25 verse 44 to 46 Exodus 21 verse 2.

    Exodus 21:2

1112. Let me come again. Genesis 12 verse 5. Genesis

    Genesis 12:5 Genesis 14:14

  1113. 14 verse 14. Genesis 16 verse 1 to 3. Genesis

    Genesis 16:1–3 Genesis 26:14

  1114. 26 verse 14. Genesis 31 verse 41. Job chapter

    Genesis 31:41 Job 1:1–3

  1115. 1 verse 1 to 3. Leviticus chapter 25 verse 44

    Leviticus 25:44–46

1116. to 46. Exodus chapter 21. Verse 2. These are

    Exodus 21 chapter mention

1117. the texts they normally use. We're going to explore

1118. some of them. Then they use the New Testament

1119. also. New Testament. They argue that Paul and

1120. Jesus, or Jesus and Paul, never explicitly condemned

1121. slavery. Because Jesus, according to them, never

1122. condemned slavery. Paul never condemned slavery.

1123. Therefore, it carries an implication of divine

1124. approval. It carries an implication of divine

1125. approval. John chapter 8 verse 35. John chapter

    John 8:35 John 8:35

  1126. 8 verse 35. Ephesians chapter 6 verse 5 to 9.

    Ephesians 6:5–9

1127. Colossians chapter 3 verse 22. to chapter 4 verse

    Colossians 3:22

  1128. 1. Again, John chapter 8 verse 35, Ephesians

    John 8:35 Ephesians 6:5–9

  1129. chapter 6 verse 5 to 9, Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3:22

1130. verse 22 to chapter 4 verse 1. So using all these,

1131. plus there's something they call divine hierarchy.

1132. They carve out some theological terms like divine

1133. hierarchy. that is a claim God ordained patriarchal

1134. society you know when you read the bible this

1135. is why i was trying to say historical facts you

1136. understand you see that there are certain things

1137. of course did the old testament has a patriarchal

1138. society yes you understand even during the time

1139. of jesus a patriarchal society right but that

1140. doesn't mean that god approved the order so they

1141. claim that god ordained patriarchal society order

1142. We are women and children and enslave people,

1143. all submission to male heads. In a sense, that's

1144. what they argue. Then they have another term

1145. which they call the paternalistic idea, paternalistic.

1146. Paternalistic ideals and idea, ideals and idea.

1147. They frame that the plantation Was an extended

1148. Christian family Was an extended Christian so

1149. you see that this terminology one divine hierarchy

1150. They believe that the that the society that is

1151. a divine Order that God have said that the society

1152. become patriarchal That everywhere including

1153. the child supposed to be patriarchal and women

1154. and children and slave submits to the male You

1155. know son And then the paternalistic ideal or

1156. idea, they framed that the plantation was an

1157. extended Christian family. We are masters, provide

1158. physical care and spiritual salvation. It's like

1159. you are the master of the house, so you are providing

1160. protection for your extended family. And in your

1161. family, we have different people with different

1162. hierarchy. You have women, you have children,

1163. then all of them are, the male are always at

1164. the top of the order, at the order, yes. And

1165. then also including servants. Just the same way

1166. like you see in the pattern of Abraham. Abraham's

1167. servant, 318, right? Servant in his house, like

1168. he has them with him. Of course he has his family,

1169. he has that, you understand. So they are trying

1170. to argue on those things. Amen. Now lastly, let

1171. me give you another thing they did. Remember

1172. I told you that this preacher, the last preacher

1173. which is Jones, Charles Colcord Jones, which

1174. is called an apostle of slaves, the focus was

1175. to convert as many slaves as possible because

1176. it would be easier to make them obedient using

1177. the scriptures, you understand, than somebody

1178. who is not reading anything. There's something

1179. they call the slave Bible. What they did was

1180. to mutilate the Bible. They call it the slave

1181. Bible. I need to give you this before we go.

1182. The slave Bible. It was published by the English

1183. missionaries. I mean this before, it looks as

1184. if they are missionaries but they are not. The

1185. English missionary in the 1804. And you know

1186. what they did? They completely removed any text

1187. that talks about liberation, equality, Exodus.

1188. In fact, because the Exodus story depicts a people

1189. who are coming out of bondage. They removed the

1190. entire Exodus and removed most of these texts

1191. from the Bible. In fact, in the slave Bible,

1192. it was said that 90 % of the Old Testament has

1193. been removed. and 50 % of the New Testament.

1194. If you look at the Bible entirely, the Bible

  1195. has about 1 ,100, about 1 ,200, 1 ,189, they're

1196. about chapters of the Bible. But in the slave

1197. Bible, we only have 232 chapters. That means

1198. you have a slave Bible that's supposed to be

  1199. 1 ,000, about 1 ,200 chapters. And then you are

1200. having only the chapters of your Bible. It's

1201. only 232 chapters. They remove everything that

1202. talks about liberation, equality, exodus, whatever.

1203. And the major mission is to remove all those

1204. things. All these texts like Galatians chapter

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

1205. 3. that talks about there is neither Jew nor

1206. Gentile no slave no free they remove it anyone

1207. that shows that you are you are a free person

1208. they remove it and then they publish so they

1209. preach to you you believe God then they will

1210. be teaching you with that Bible they will be

1211. giving you those of it you don't know whether

1212. any Bible have existed but at least you have

1213. one that will be making you obedient so all the

1214. texts that appear to say in a sign you should

1215. submit your master in all things in that that

1216. that's the one they left what a crooked generation

1217. Now, it's not just only to talk about some of

1218. the things that they have done. That is our responsibility

1219. to as well look at those things, because we have

1220. some of these problems today. Do you know that

1221. even including the words of Paul, like for example,

1222. in 2 Timothy chapter 2, we're coming to it where

    2 Timothy 2 chapter mention

1223. he talks about I do not permit a woman to teach

1224. a man. They use it as part of the things that

1225. both the church and the society is a patriarchal

1226. society. And therefore, women are supposed to

1227. have total submission. They have no any other

1228. rights in the sun than actually to submit. And

1229. they use it both. So we're going to look at submitting.

1230. We're just starting with the issue of the slavery

1231. in the sun. And I wanted to see how the Bible

1232. has been misused, you understand, mutilated just

1233. for the sake of it. So don't be afraid. Let me

1234. tell you, some of the people you are going to

1235. face and fight with so much on the issue of doctrine

1236. are not unbelievers. They are going to be church

1237. people who are rooted in tradition. And let me

1238. tell you, all these pastors that I mentioned,

1239. their own slaves, you understand? They also have

1240. their position at the top of the society. You

1241. know what I'm saying? They enjoy lots of benefits.

1242. I remember we used to talk, just like our most,

1243. apology to most of our Nigerian lecturers, you

1244. know what I'm saying? But I have to complain

1245. that many of our lecturers, especially the old,

1246. old professors, you know what I'm saying, enjoy

1247. Nigeria. When they went to school at that time,

1248. because my uncle, my dad used to tell us a story,

1249. you know what I'm saying? They are the one that

1250. enjoy government. Sir, in ABU, one of my uncle

1251. used to tell us what is happening in ABU. You

1252. go to cafeteria, free food. The tea, thick one,

1253. is coming from the tea. You just own and fetch

1254. the much you have. You'll see big, big chicken

1255. and all that. They're not paying it. Government,

1256. during their time. But these people, now that

1257. they have become professors, oh, they are the

1258. one that do the hell out of to them. Many of

1259. the lecturers also come abroad, enjoy that they
