  1. Please open your Bibles this morning to the book of Titus.

  2. The book of Titus.

  3. We are beginning a new sermon series this morning in the book of Titus.

  4. I can't remember exactly what page that is in and your pew Bibles there in front of you.

  5. It's in the 915 to 940 range, right there.

  6. What is it?

  7. 938.

  8. If you want to use your pew Bibles there in front of you, you can find that on page 938.

  9. The book of Titus.

  10. This book is a letter from the Apostle Paul to a fellow minister in the gospel, a co-worker, Titus.

  11. And as he gives Titus instruction and encouragement, instruction for the churches there in Crete,

  12. we can gain insight, we can gain knowledge for what a church of sound doctrine ought to believe and ought to do.

  13. We can gain insight for our church as we think about our life together in the days ahead.

  14. So let's look there now.

  15. Titus chapter 1.

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  16. We're going to be in verses 1 through 4 this morning.

  17. Paul writes,

  18. Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ,

  19. for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth,

  20. which accords with godliness,

  21. in hope of eternal life,

  22. which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began,

  23. and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching

  24. with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior.

  25. To Titus, my true child in a common faith,

  26. grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

  27. Would you pray with me once more?

  28. Lord, as we begin this book,

  29. we commit our time in your word to you.

  30. We ask that you would stir our hearts' affections for Christ,

  31. and would you be pleased to shape Seawee Bay by the power of your word.

  32. We pray and we ask this in Christ's name.

  33. Amen.

  34. Imagine with me that you are in the first few months of a brand new job.

  35. You've wanted this job for a while,

  36. and now you're here.

  37. You're getting your feet wet and beginning to go about your work.

  38. And you've been given a book that provides your job description

  39. and job descriptions for every single fellow worker in the company.

  40. And as with many new jobs,

  41. your first few months are spent with some on-the-ground training.

  42. You had this world-class mentor

  43. who really seemed to know what he was doing.

  44. He walked you through the ins and outs of what the work would look like

  45. but then the time comes when the mentor leaves

  46. and the work begins.

  47. As you begin to get into the weeds of the day-to-day grind,

  48. you realize there are some major problems here.

  49. There are people here in this company, in your workplace,

  50. that don't seem to follow the book at all.

  51. In fact, they seem to know what it says.

  52. I think they could pass any written exam on protocols and procedures

  53. that you might give them.

  54. Sometimes they seem like they know even more about the book than you do.

  55. But something is off about the way that they go about their work.

  56. They don't seem to have any interest in actually doing what they're supposed to do.

  57. And not only that, but they sound so smart

  58. that they're beginning to convince everyone else around them

  59. to live this way too.

  60. You got a mess to work through.

  61. But thankfully, your old mentor comes through again

  62. and he writes you a letter

  63. to remind you of your call

  64. and your confidence.

  65. That yes, what you're doing is hard.

  66. Yes, this is a big challenge.

  67. But press on because it is worth it.

  68. Well, this is exactly the situation that Titus finds himself in

  69. in the book that bears his name, the book of Titus.

  70. Titus is one of Paul's converts.

  71. Paul had shared the gospel with Titus,

  72. seen him come to faith.

  73. And now Titus has become a fellow co-worker and companion of Paul.

  74. They've labored together already in the church at Corinth.

  75. And now Paul and Titus have traveled together to the island of Crete,

  76. seeking to bring the gospel to this pagan island

  77. and share the gospel to build the church.

  78. And they've seen the Lord work in power.

  79. They've seen souls saved.

  80. And the church was starting to be formed.

  81. Churches were forming on the island.

  82. And now Paul has left Titus behind

  83. to establish and continue the work that was started.

  84. But as you might imagine,

  85. Satan hated the work that was going on in Crete.

  86. Satan, as we saw last week,

  87. hates to see the health of the church.

  88. He hates to see the church grow.

  89. And so what he did was he sent false teachers there in Crete.

  90. False teachers who would spread lies

  91. and do everything they could to stop the work of gospel ministry.

  92. They're spreading lies and divisions.

  93. False teachers have crept into the church.

  94. And so Paul, as a good mentor would,

  95. he writes to Titus to remind him of two important truths

  96. as he continues the work in Crete.

  97. Two important truths.

  98. He reminds Titus of the call and the confidence of gospel ministry.

  99. The call and the confidence of gospel ministry.

  100. This is going to be our outline this morning.

  101. If you're a note taker, I encourage you to write these down.

  102. It'll help you to follow along.

  103. This is the call and the confidence of gospel ministry.

  104. And what I hope we'll see in our time together

  105. is that, yes, this is a book written to Titus,

  106. but this is also our call and our confidence as believers.

  107. As we go about the work of gospel ministry,

  108. we share this call and we share this confidence

  109. with Paul and with Titus and with every believer in Christ.

  110. So first, we see the call of gospel ministry.

  111. The call of gospel ministry.

  112. Every Christian is called to the ministry of the gospel.

  113. We may not all be called to be pastors

  114. or called to be church planters.

  115. We may not be called to be an apostle.

  116. Paul here is uniquely called in his role

  117. as an apostle of Christ Jesus.

  118. But every believer, every Christian,

  119. is called by God to join in the work of gospel ministry.

  120. But what is that?

  121. What exactly is gospel ministry?

  122. What is the aim of our ministry

  123. as individual believers in Christ?

  124. And collectively, what is our aim together as a church?

  125. Well, Paul tells us in verse 1.

  126. Look there with me.

  127. Verse 1.

  128. It says,

  129. Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ,

  130. for, what's he writing?

  131. For, what's he working?

  132. For, this is what he's laboring.

  133. For, for the Savior,

  134. the sake of the faith of God's elect

  135. and their knowledge of the truth,

  136. which accords with godliness.

  137. That's the mission.

  138. That's the mission.

  139. Every phrase is important here.

  140. They're all connected.

  141. How does the old song go?

  142. The head bone's connected to the,

  143. what is it?

  144. The shoulder bone?

  145. The shoulder bone is connected to the,

  146. the rest of the body.

  147. It's all connected.

  148. Whatever the song is,

  149. it's a brilliant song.

  150. Every part is connected.

  151. And in Paul here,

  152. the same thing is happening.

  153. He's, he's giving his aim for ministry.

  154. And he says,

  155. all of it is connected.

  156. Election is connected to faith.

  157. Faith is connected to knowledge.

  158. And genuine knowledge of the truth

  159. is connected to godliness.

  160. So let's look at each part here.

  161. Every phrase is important.

  162. He says,

  163. he says,

  164. he's laboring for the sake of the faith of God's elect.

  165. That is gospel ministry in a sentence.

  166. That is gospel ministry.

  167. Gospel ministry is,

  168. is laboring for the sake of the faith of God's elect.

  169. Whether externally by evangelism,

  170. as we seek to share the gospel broadly with the lost,

  171. and we see men and women come to faith in Christ for the first time,

  172. or internally in the church,

  173. through the training,

  174. the discipling ministries of the church,

  175. seeing,

  176. seeing followers of Christ,

  177. disciples of Christ,

  178. grow in their faith in Jesus Christ.

  179. Gospel ministry is laboring to see people come to faith

  180. and grow in faith in Christ Jesus.

  181. Is that your ambition?

  182. Is that your aim?

  183. Is that your desire for our life together as a church?

  184. Now,

  185. election may be a scary word for some of us.

  186. That word gets a bad rap.

  187. But we need to see this,

  188. that Paul's understanding of election

  189. was the reason he gave his life

  190. to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth.

  191. For Paul,

  192. election was the reason

  193. he went to share the gospel.

  194. He believed that in every place he went,

  195. God had elected or chosen.

  196. That's what election means.

  197. He had chosen men and women unto salvation.

  198. And he believed that he was appointed as a servant

  199. to spread the seed of the gospel far and wide

  200. with the confidence that the Lord would cause it

  201. to bear the fruit of faith in his chosen people.

  202. He was,

  203. verse 3,

  204. entrusted by the command of God to preach the word.

  205. So he writes,

  206. verse 1,

  207. he writes,

  208. for the sake of the faith of God's elect.

  209. This is what God had shown Paul in the city of Corinth.

  210. You might remember Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  211. Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  212. He had labored there in Corinth.

  213. He had preached the gospel,

  214. wearing himself out.

  215. Some of them accepted the message.

  216. Some of them rejected the message.

  217. And the Lord spoke to him one night in a vision.

  218. Acts chapter 18,

    Acts 18:9

  219. verse 9.

  220. The Lord said to Paul one night in a vision,

  221. Do not be afraid,

  222. but go on speaking.

  223. Do not be silent,

  224. for I am with you,

  225. and no one will attack you to harm you.

  226. For I have many in this city who are my people.

  227. And so he stayed a year and six months teaching the word of God among them.

  228. Why?

  229. Because God had many in that city who were his people.

  230. Many who were to become his people by hearing and receiving the word in faith.

  231. Paul labored because he saw this connection between election and faith.

  232. But what is faith?

  233. What is faith?

  234. For by grace you have been saved through faith.

  235. We are saved through faith.

  236. That's what we're aiming to produce in God's elect.

  237. So what is it?

  238. You know, this is one of the most watered down,

  239. diluted,

  240. stripped of its power words in the English language.

  241. You can tell I have a hard time with this.

  242. Okay?

  243. You hear people say,

  244. Just have faith.

  245. You have your faith.

  246. I have my faith.

  247. Or keep the faith.

  248. He's a person of faith.

  249. She's a person of faith.

  250. What are we talking about?

  251. What does that mean when we talk about faith?

  252. No one is saved by just having faith.

  253. No one is saved by keeping the faith,

  254. whatever that means.

  255. No one is saved by being a person of faith

  256. unless that faith is in someone who can save you.

  257. See, faith is a tether.

  258. It is a rope.

  259. It's a chain that you throw outward,

  260. away from yourself to connect you to someone or something else.

  261. We often talk about faith like we just throw it up in the sky

  262. and we just believe it's going to latch on to something that's going to help us.

  263. That's not biblical faith.

  264. Untethered faith will save no one.

  265. No one who has fallen into a pit is saved by just having a rope

  266. unless on the other side of that rope is someone who is able to pull you out to save you.

  267. Saving faith, in the Bible, saving faith is genuine trust in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation.

  268. That's the only kind of faith that saves.

  269. Faith is the rope that ties your heart to Christ and all that He is,

  270. all that He's done in the gospel,

  271. and His reliance on Him alone,

  272. His dependence on Him alone is outward reaching towards Christ,

  273. saying, I'm not worthy of trust.

  274. I can't bring myself out of this pit.

  275. Only you are.

  276. Only you can.

  277. I'm not righteous.

  278. You are.

  279. I'm not worthy of praise.

  280. You are.

  281. I'm not Lord of my life.

  282. You are.

  283. You alone are God.

  284. That's saving faith.

  285. That's what we're laboring to see in our evangelism externally,

  286. in our discipleship internally,

  287. in our marriages,

  288. in our relationships,

  289. in our friendships,

  290. in our hospitality,

  291. in our life.

  292. We are laboring for the sake of the faith of God's elect.

  293. And for that to happen, church,

  294. it requires knowledge of the truth.

  295. Knowledge of the truth.

  296. You know, one of the craftiest lies

  297. that the devil has told the church

  298. is that somehow knowledge

  299. is an enemy of the faith.

  300. That you have your spiritual people over here

  301. who feel and experience,

  302. and you got your intellectual people over here

  303. who think and who study.

  304. The Bible doesn't talk that way.

  305. They are connected.

  306. You can have faith without knowledge,

  307. but that knowledge,

  308. that faith will not save you.

  309. Some of the most devout men and women of faith

  310. are Muslims,

  311. Jews,

  312. and Jehovah's Witnesses.

  313. Their level of devotion,

  314. their level of faith is astounding,

  315. but they are trusting lies.

  316. They've tied their ropes to dust.

  317. You can have knowledge without faith,

  318. but that will not save you.

  319. Even the devil believes the facts about Christ.

  320. Even the demons believe and shudder.

  321. It doesn't help you to know

  322. that someone's up there

  323. on the other side of the pit

  324. if you don't trust them to pull you out.

  325. You see, we need both.

  326. Knowledge and faith.

  327. Knowledge and faith.

  328. We're aiming to produce both.

  329. You don't have to have much knowledge.

  330. You don't have to have

  331. an upper education degree

  332. or years of training,

  333. but you have to have enough knowledge

  334. of the truth

  335. to latch your heart

  336. and your mind

  337. onto the message of the gospel

  338. and say,

  339. I trust that to be true.

  340. I believe that message to be true.

  341. I know and I believe

  342. that I'm a sinner.

  343. That's knowledge and faith.

  344. I know and I believe

  345. that I am separated from God.

  346. Knowledge and faith.

  347. I know and I believe

  348. that apart from the grace of God,

  349. I will die in my sin

  350. and go to hell.

  351. Knowledge and faith.

  352. I know and I believe

  353. that Christ lived,

  354. that he died perfectly in my place,

  355. that he died on the cross for my sin.

  356. I know and I believe

  357. that he rose from the grave in my place.

  358. I know and I trust him

  359. when he says,

  360. if anyone believes in me,

  361. he will not perish,

  362. but have eternal life.

  363. So on the basis of that truth,

  364. that knowledge,

  365. my mind convinced

  366. and my heart awakened,

  367. I trust in Jesus Christ.

  368. It may be that you've never

  369. trusted in Christ.

  370. And if that's you this morning,

  371. if you hear these words

  372. and you say,

  373. I've heard that,

  374. but I've never believed that.

  375. I've heard that knowledge,

  376. but I've never trusted that.

  377. Do you believe him?

  378. Do you know him

  379. and trust him as your savior?

  380. Repent and believe the words of truth.

  381. You see, church,

  382. when we preach and proclaim the gospel,

  383. we are proclaiming knowledge

  384. that if believed,

  385. will save sinners

  386. and equip saints.

  387. But don't leave it there.

  388. Don't be content

  389. to leave it there.

  390. What does Paul say?

  391. Election is connected to faith.

  392. Faith is connected to knowledge

  393. and real,

  394. genuine,

  395. saving knowledge of the truth

  396. is connected

  397. with godliness.

  398. For the sake of the faith

  399. of God's elect

  400. and their knowledge

  401. of the truth,

  402. which accords

  403. with godliness.

  404. You see,

  405. this was the big problem

  406. here in Crete.

  407. False teachers

  408. have crept in

  409. and were teaching

  410. that you can keep

  411. the information

  412. and you can keep

  413. the knowledge

  414. and you can go on living

  415. however you want.

  416. As long as you know

  417. the right facts.

  418. They were driving a wedge

  419. between saving knowledge

  420. and godly living,

  421. saying you can have

  422. one without the other.

  423. But Paul here says,

  424. any who truly know the Lord

  425. will bear the fruit

  426. of godliness.

  427. See,

  428. the roots of election

  429. are hidden from our eyes.

  430. We can't see that.

  431. But the fruits of righteousness

  432. in those who believe,

  433. that's visible.

  434. That we can see.

  435. Some of you,

  436. I know,

  437. grew up farming.

  438. And you can drive

  439. by a field

  440. and tell exactly

  441. what crop that is

  442. out there growing

  443. before it's even

  444. born any fruit.

  445. I can't.

  446. Okay?

  447. I'm helpless.

  448. I'm absolutely clueless

  449. when it comes to that.

  450. We'll be driving

  451. by a field

  452. and someone in the car

  453. will ask,

  454. what is that?

  455. And I'll say,

  456. I don't know.

  457. But if it's bearing fruit,

  458. I can tell you,

  459. that's a blackberry bush.

  460. That's an apple tree.

  461. How do you know?

  462. I see apples.

  463. I see blackberries.

  464. I see the fruit

  465. that it's producing.

  466. Jesus tells us

  467. in Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  468. what?

  469. You know a tree by what?

  470. By its fruits.

  471. He's not talking

  472. about a tree.

  473. He's talking about us,

  474. about our hearts.

  475. The only way

  476. that we're able to see

  477. and to discern

  478. the internal,

  479. hidden state

  480. of someone's heart

  481. is by the spiritual fruit

  482. of godliness

  483. in their life.

  484. saving faith

  485. accords

  486. with godliness.

  487. Friend,

  488. if you or me

  489. or anyone else

  490. claims to be

  491. a follower of Christ,

  492. we should expect

  493. to see them follow.

  494. If you or me

  495. or anyone else

  496. claims to be

  497. a child of God,

  498. born again

  499. as a child of God,

  500. we should expect

  501. to see the fruit

  502. of new life,

  503. regeneration.

  504. If you or me

  505. or anyone else

  506. expects

  507. and claims

  508. to have our roots

  509. down in God's grace,

  510. to be rooted

  511. in the grace of God,

  512. we should expect

  513. to see the fruits

  514. of godliness

  515. in our life.

  516. Not perfection,

  517. but progress

  518. and pursuit

  519. of godliness.

  520. Putting off

  521. the old man,

  522. putting on

  523. the new.

  524. Church,

  525. this is the call

  526. of gospel ministry.

  527. I want to hang

  528. this as a banner

  529. over every ministry

  530. of our church,

  531. over the preaching

  532. of the word

  533. is for the sake

  534. of the faith

  535. of God's elect.

  536. A knowledgeable faith,

  537. a godly faith.

  538. Over our discipleship

  539. of one another

  540. is for the sake

  541. of the faith

  542. of God's elect.

  543. Over our children's ministry

  544. and the children's wing

  545. is for the sake

  546. of the faith

  547. of God's elect.

  548. But how can we be certain

  549. that this will be accomplished?

  550. What is our confidence?

  551. Do we have any assurances

  552. that all of this work

  553. will be worth it?

  554. That our efforts here

  555. as a church

  556. and the ministry

  557. of the word,

  558. that it won't be in vain?

  559. As we labor

  560. and we look together

  561. towards the new year

  562. and all that we have

  563. planned together

  564. as a church,

  565. as we launch out

  566. as a gospel preaching church

  567. in this area,

  568. how can we be confident

  569. that our ministry

  570. will be effective?

  571. Look with me

  572. to verses 2 and 3.

  573. Verses 2 and 3.

  574. This is our confidence

  575. of gospel ministry.

  576. All of this

  577. that we are aiming

  578. to produce,

  579. faith,

  580. knowledge,

  581. godliness,

  582. all of it,

  583. Paul says,

  584. all of it

  585. is in hope

  586. of eternal life.

  587. In hope

  588. of eternal life.

  589. Our pursuit

  590. of knowledge

  591. and the truth

  592. is in hope.

  593. Faith is born

  594. in hope.

  595. Our pursuit

  596. of godliness

  597. is forward looking,

  598. onward looking

  599. to the hope

  600. of eternal life.

  601. Our confidence,

  602. church,

  603. is in God's

  604. eternal promise

  605. and in God's

  606. appointed means.

  607. God's eternal promise

  608. and God's

  609. appointed means.

  610. Christians are those

  611. who have the hope

  612. of eternal life.

  613. hope.

  614. We believe

  615. God so loved

  616. the world

  617. that he gave

  618. his only son

  619. that whoever

  620. believes in him

  621. should not perish

  622. but have what?

  623. Help me.

  624. Eternal life.

  625. That's our hope.

  626. But we don't speak

  627. about hope

  628. the same way

  629. that the rest

  630. of the world does.

  631. The way that we tend

  632. to use that word,

  633. hope,

  634. is anything

  635. but certain.

  636. I hope it stops

  637. raining so much.

  638. Right?

  639. I hope the Braves

  640. will catch the Mets

  641. and take over

  642. first place.

  643. I hope the economy

  644. straightens out

  645. sometime soon.

  646. All of that

  647. is wishful thinking.

  648. It's hopeful thinking.

  649. There's no certainty

  650. in that.

  651. That's a wish.

  652. It's not a certainty.

  653. It's not grounded

  654. in truth.

  655. But see,

  656. the Christian hope

  657. of eternal life

  658. is not wishful thinking.

  659. It is certain hope.

  660. 100% certain.

  661. It's more certain

  662. than the sun rising tomorrow.

  663. It's more certain

  664. than your next breath.

  665. Nothing is as certain

  666. as the hope

  667. of eternal life

  668. for all who are in Christ

  669. because God has promised it

  670. to be so.

  671. Look there

  672. at what he says again.

  673. God,

  674. who never lies,

  675. promised this hope

  676. before the ages began.

  677. Numbers 23,

    Numbers 23:19

  678. verse 19

  679. tells us,

  680. God is not a man

  681. that he should lie

  682. or a son of man

  683. that he should change his mind.

  684. Has he said

  685. and will he not do it

  686. or has he spoken

  687. and will he not fulfill it?

  688. See,

  689. our confidence

  690. in life

  691. and in ministry

  692. is the certain hope

  693. of eternal life

  694. promised by God

  695. who never lies.

  696. See,

  697. the false teachers

  698. there in Crete

  699. were teaching falsehood.

  700. They were proclaiming lies.

  701. They were selling lies.

  702. They were deceiving many.

  703. And Paul says,

  704. believe the promise of God.

  705. Remember the promise of God.

  706. God never lies.

  707. Church,

  708. listen to me here.

  709. everything else

  710. that you set your hope on

  711. in this life

  712. will disappoint you.

  713. Everything else

  714. that you set your hope on

  715. in this life,

  716. if you set your hope

  717. on the economy,

  718. I guess you're probably

  719. pretty disappointed

  720. right now.

  721. If you set your hope

  722. on politics,

  723. politicians,

  724. you will be let down

  725. and disappointed.

  726. If you set your hope

  727. on the uncertainty

  728. of riches,

  729. you will be disappointed.

  730. If you set your hope

  731. ultimately on a relationship,

  732. a friendship,

  733. a husband,

  734. a wife,

  735. you will be disappointed.

  736. But if you set your hope

  737. fully on Christ Jesus,

  738. you will never be disappointed.

  739. Because God,

  740. who never lies,

  741. has promised eternal life

  742. in Christ

  743. for all who believe

  744. before the ages began.

  745. Do you see how certain

  746. that is?

  747. How unshakable

  748. that is

  749. before the ages began.

  750. Ephesians 1,

  751. remember this,

  752. it told us,

  753. God chose us

  754. in Christ

  755. before the foundation

  756. of the world.

  757. Before the ages began.

  758. 2 Timothy 1,

    2 Timothy 1:9

  759. verse 9 says,

  760. God saved us

  761. and called us

  762. to a holy calling,

  763. not because of our works,

  764. but because of his own purpose

  765. and grace,

  766. which he gave us

  767. in Christ Jesus

  768. before the ages began.

  769. You see,

  770. our salvation in time,

  771. our calling to faith

  772. in Christ in time,

  773. our holiness in time,

  774. Paul says it's not

  775. because of our works

  776. in time.

  777. It's not because of anything

  778. we've done in this life.

  779. Rather,

  780. it's rooted

  781. in the eternal plan

  782. and promise

  783. of God.

  784. That's our confidence

  785. in this ministry.

  786. We can't lose this

  787. or mess this up

  788. because this promise

  789. was made to us

  790. who believe in Christ

  791. before we even existed.

  792. Now,

  793. let's come full circle

  794. here,

  795. church.

  796. We're laboring

  797. for the sake

  798. of the faith

  799. of God's elect

  800. and their knowledge

  801. of the truth

  802. which accords

  803. with godliness

  804. in hope.

  805. How is that hope

  806. given?

  807. How does anyone

  808. move from death

  809. to life?

  810. From darkness

  811. to light?

  812. How does anyone

  813. move from the hopelessness

  814. of the world

  815. to the hope

  816. of eternal life?

  817. Look with me

  818. once more

  819. to verse 3.

  820. Paul says,

  821. at the proper time,

  822. God manifested

  823. this hope

  824. in his word

  825. through the preaching

  826. of the gospel.

  827. How is hope manifested?

  828. How is it brought

  829. about in the hearts

  830. of the lost?

  831. How is it revealed

  832. and made known?

  833. Paul says,

  834. through the preaching

  835. of the word.

  836. How do the elect

  837. come to faith

  838. in accordance

  839. with knowledge

  840. of the truth

  841. in accordance

  842. with godliness

  843. and hope

  844. of eternal life

  845. through the preaching

  846. of the word?

  847. Why does Paul

  848. preach the gospel

  849. even when it cost him

  850. everything?

  851. Imprisonment,

  852. ultimately death.

  853. Why do we place

  854. such a high emphasis

  855. on the preaching

  856. of the word?

  857. Why do I spend hours

  858. every week laboring

  859. to explain four verses,

  860. all the four verses

  861. to you this morning?

  862. is because,

  863. church,

  864. we believe

  865. that God's word

  866. and the preaching

  867. of the gospel

  868. is God's appointed

  869. means to manifest

  870. hope,

  871. to manifest

  872. the hope

  873. of eternal life,

  874. to bring about

  875. hope in the hearts

  876. of the lost

  877. and to fix hope

  878. in the hearts

  879. of the saints.

  880. What God purposes

  881. in eternity,

  882. he brings about

  883. in time

  884. through his

  885. appointed means.

  886. God accomplishes

  887. his purposes

  888. through means.

  889. And our confidence

  890. is that this word,

  891. as we proclaim

  892. the glory of God

  893. and the gospel

  894. of Jesus Christ,

  895. is 100% effective

  896. in accomplishing

  897. the plan of God,

  898. even when we don't

  899. see it.

  900. You remember the

  901. verses that Treg

  902. read for us

  903. this morning?

  904. Isaiah 55.

  905. It seems like

  906. every day we've

  907. been getting rain,

  908. finally we have

  909. had some sunshine

  910. out here today.

  911. I told Amanda

  912. I wasn't sure

  913. if we moved

  914. to Allendal

  915. or Seattle.

  916. It's been raining

  917. so much.

  918. But if you're

  919. a farmer,

  920. you know

  921. the importance

  922. of rain.

  923. Rain gives life.

  924. It's effective.

  925. It's what waters

  926. and nourishes the soil.

  927. It brings growth.

  928. It brings life

  929. from the ground.

  930. Rain is good.

  931. It's the means.

  932. It's the tool,

  933. the instrument

  934. of life and growth.

  935. Isaiah 55 reminds us

  936. that God's word

  937. is like the rain.

  938. Isaiah 55,

    Isaiah 55:10

  939. verses 10 and 11,

  940. he says,

  941. For as the rain

  942. and the snow

  943. come down from heaven

  944. and do not return there

  945. but water the earth,

  946. making it bring forth

  947. and sprout,

  948. giving seed to the sower

  949. and bread to the eater,

  950. so shall my word be.

  951. That goes out

  952. from my mouth.

  953. It shall not return

  954. to me empty.

  955. Listen to this.

  956. But it shall accomplish

  957. the purpose

  958. for which I send it.

  959. It shall accomplish

  960. that which I purpose

  961. and shall succeed

  962. in the thing

  963. for which I sent it.

  964. The word of God

  965. is 100% effective

  966. in fulfilling

  967. the plan of God.

  968. Hope is formed

  969. in the hearts

  970. of the lost

  971. and hope is fixed

  972. in the hearts

  973. of the redeemed

  974. by the preaching

  975. of the word.

  976. Every one of you

  977. who's a believer

  978. in the room

  979. knows that to be true.

  980. How did you come

  981. to faith in Christ?

  982. Whether it was

  983. a friend,

  984. a family member,

  985. a church service,

  986. a pastor,

  987. a radio program,

  988. or by yourself

  989. with the word,

  990. someone,

  991. somehow,

  992. some way,

  993. God sent his word

  994. to you

  995. and it landed

  996. on fertile soil.

  997. And that word

  998. caused growth

  999. in your heart.

  1000. The growth

  1001. of the hope

  1002. of eternal life.

  1003. The certain hope

  1004. of eternal life

  1005. planned and promised

  1006. in Christ

  1007. by God

  1008. for you

  1009. before the ages

  1010. began

  1011. was manifested

  1012. in your life

  1013. through

  1014. the preaching

  1015. of the word.

  1016. See,

  1017. God has appointed

  1018. the preaching

  1019. of the word

  1020. as his chosen means

  1021. to accomplish

  1022. his eternal purposes.

  1023. He does not

  1024. bypass us

  1025. in his plans.

  1026. He works in

  1027. and through us

  1028. as we together

  1029. proclaim the truth.

  1030. This is why

  1031. we send missionaries

  1032. to the ends

  1033. of the earth.

  1034. Why we pray

  1035. for a different country

  1036. every week

  1037. that the Lord

  1038. would send

  1039. the truth,

  1040. send the word

  1041. out to Bhutan

  1042. this morning.

  1043. This is why

  1044. we preach the gospel.

  1045. I stand here,

  1046. Treg stands here

  1047. week in,

  1048. week out

  1049. and proclaim

  1050. the word of truth.

  1051. This is why

  1052. we share

  1053. the good news

  1054. of Christ

  1055. with the lost

  1056. and evangelize

  1057. our lost friends

  1058. and neighbors

  1059. and co-workers

  1060. and family members

  1061. is because

  1062. apart from

  1063. hearing the word

  1064. of God,

  1065. no one can come

  1066. to faith in Christ.

  1067. I love the fact

  1068. that Romans 9

  1069. and Romans 10

  1070. are next to each

  1071. other in the Bible.

  1072. I encourage you all

  1073. to go home

  1074. and read those

  1075. two chapters.

  1076. Back to back.

  1077. Don't stop.

  1078. Read all the way

  1079. through Romans 9

  1080. to Romans 10.

  1081. Go home,

  1082. do that this afternoon.

  1083. They hold hands.

  1084. They're friends.

  1085. They get along.

  1086. Paul wrote both

  1087. chapters,

  1088. I promise.

  1089. Romans 9,

  1090. he highlights

  1091. the sovereignty

  1092. of God

  1093. and salvation.

  1094. He highlights

  1095. God's purposes

  1096. in election.

  1097. He says to Moses,

  1098. I will have mercy

1099. on whom I will have mercy

1100. and I will have compassion

1101. on whom I will have compassion.

  1102. That's a whole other sermon

  1103. or 20.

1104. But in the very next breath,

  1105. here we are

  1106. in Romans 10.

  1107. Everyone who calls

  1108. on the name

  1109. of the Lord

  1110. will be saved.

  1111. How then

  1112. will they call

  1113. on Him

1114. whom they have not believed?

  1115. How are they

  1116. to believe in Him

1117. whom they have never heard?

1118. How are they to hear

  1119. without someone

  1120. preaching?

  1121. And how are they

  1122. to preach

  1123. unless they are sent?

  1124. As it is written,

  1125. how beautiful

  1126. are the feet

  1127. of those who preach

  1128. the good news.

  1129. Faith comes through

  1130. hearing

  1131. and hearing

  1132. through the Word

  1133. of Christ.

  1134. election

  1135. is connected

  1136. to faith.

  1137. Faith

  1138. is connected

  1139. to knowledge.

  1140. Knowledge

  1141. is connected

  1142. to godliness

  1143. and all of it

  1144. is lived

  1145. in this rock-solid

  1146. hope

  1147. of eternal life

  1148. promised by the mouth

  1149. of God

  1150. through His Word

  1151. to all

  1152. who believe.

  1153. Church,

  1154. that is our call

  1155. and that is

  1156. our confidence.

  1157. That's the ministry

1158. that we are to be about.

  1159. That's the ministry

  1160. of the gospel.

  1161. This is like

  1162. a good father

  1163. who

  1164. years before

  1165. he ever

  1166. even has a son

  1167. promises

  1168. that

  1169. one day

  1170. he will take

  1171. that future son

  1172. to the ballpark.

  1173. No work,

  1174. no school,

  1175. no homework,

  1176. no distractions,

  1177. just him

  1178. and his son

  1179. enjoying time

  1180. together.

  1181. The point

  1182. isn't the ballpark

  1183. as fun as that

  1184. will be.

  1185. The point

  1186. is time

  1187. together

  1188. with dad.

  1189. And years

  1190. later

  1191. the day

  1192. comes

  1193. and his

  1194. son is born.

  1195. And this

  1196. little baby

  1197. has no

  1198. idea

  1199. what his

  1200. father

  1201. has planned

  1202. for him.

  1203. That this

  1204. great day

  1205. has been

  1206. planned.

  1207. This great

  1208. day is

  1209. coming.

  1210. Not a clue.

  1211. He just

  1212. cries.

  1213. And wiggles.

  1214. And eats.

  1215. And sleeps.

  1216. But one

  1217. day when

  1218. the time

  1219. is right.

  1220. Only the

  1221. father knows

  1222. when.

  1223. He wakes

  1224. his son

  1225. up.

  1226. And he

  1227. hands him

  1228. two tickets.

  1229. And he

  1230. says I

  1231. planned

  1232. something

  1233. for us.

  1234. Will you

  1235. come

  1236. with me?

  1237. Would you

  1238. like to

  1239. come

  1240. with me?

  1241. That's

  1242. the word

  1243. extended.

  1244. That's

  1245. the word

  1246. preached.

  1247. preached.

  1248. And the

  1249. son reads

  1250. the words

  1251. on those

  1252. tickets.

  1253. He sees

  1254. what it

  1255. says.

  1256. He sees

  1257. what the

  1258. invitation

  1259. is all

  1260. about.

  1261. He sees

  1262. the names

  1263. of the

  1264. teams and

  1265. that the

  1266. price of

  1267. admission

  1268. has been

  1269. paid in

  1270. full.

  1271. He doesn't

  1272. have to

  1273. pay a

  1274. dime.

  1275. He can

  1276. come

  1277. without

  1278. cost to

  1279. himself.

  1280. He studies

  1281. those tickets

  1282. day in,

  1283. day out.

  1284. He knows

  1285. what they

  1286. feel like,

  1287. how they

  1288. look,

  1289. how they

  1290. smell,

  1291. what they

  1292. say.

  1293. That's

  1294. knowledge.

  1295. And looking

  1296. at those

  1297. tickets,

  1298. he believes

  1299. that this

  1300. is good.

  1301. That his

  1302. father will

  1303. fulfill his

  1304. promise.

  1305. He's

  1306. trustworthy.

  1307. He's proven

  1308. himself to be

  1309. worthy of

  1310. trust.

  1311. And so he

  1312. trusts that his

  1313. father is going

  1314. to keep his

  1315. word.

  1316. That's faith.

  1317. faith.

  1318. And every

  1319. night when

  1320. the boy goes

  1321. to bed, he

  1322. looks at those

  1323. tickets.

  1324. He sleeps with

  1325. them on his

  1326. pillow.

  1327. He wakes up

  1328. and carries

  1329. them in his

  1330. pocket and he

  1331. marks down the

  1332. days on his

  1333. calendar.

  1334. His whole life

  1335. is shaped around

  1336. that coming

  1337. day until the

  1338. day arrives at

  1339. last and he

  1340. can finally

  1341. enjoy the

  1342. realization of

  1343. the promise

  1344. that was made

  1345. before he

  1346. was even

  1347. born.

  1348. That's hope.

  1349. Church, that

  1350. is what we're

  1351. laboring to

  1352. see.

  1353. That is the

  1354. ministry of

  1355. the gospel.

  1356. Let's pray.

  1357. Father, we

  1358. thank you

  1359. that for

  1360. those who

  1361. are in

  1362. Christ, Lord,

  1363. that is

  1364. your doing.

  1365. And we

  1366. pray that

  1367. our faith

  1368. would be a

  1369. knowledgeable

  1370. faith, knowledge

  1371. of the truth,

  1372. that you would

  1373. grow us in

  1374. knowledge of

  1375. the truth.

  1376. Would you

  1377. grow us who

  1378. believe in

  1379. godliness?

  1380. Would you

  1381. strengthen the

  1382. hope of

  1383. eternal life

  1384. that you have

  1385. placed within

  1386. our hearts?

  1387. And Lord, we

  1388. pray, our

  1389. prayer is that

  1390. we would see

  1391. faith born in

  1392. the lost for

  1393. the first

  1394. time, even

  1395. this week, as

  1396. we share the

  1397. gospel.

  1398. And we pray

  1399. that faith would

  1400. be strengthened

  1401. here by

  1402. instruction in

  1403. the truth and

  1404. growth and

  1405. godliness.

  1406. Lord, would

  1407. you do it?

  1408. Would you be

  1409. pleased to do

  1410. that here among

  1411. us?

  1412. We love you,

  1413. Father, and we

  1414. pray all this in

  1415. the name of

  1416. Christ.

  1417. Amen.

  1418. Amen.

  1419. Amen.

  1420. Amen.

  1421. Amen.

  1422. Amen.

  1423. Amen.

  1424. Amen.

  1425. Amen.

  1426. Amen.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Amen.

  1430. Amen.

  1431. Amen.

  1432. Amen.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.
