  1. Amen.

  2. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of Titus.

  3. We are continuing our series in the book of Titus this morning,

  4. and we will be in chapter 2, verses 11 through 15 this morning.

  5. Chapter 2, verses 11 through 15.

  6. If you're using the few Bibles there in front of you, you can find that on page 938.

  7. So if you did not bring a Bible of your own, it'll be here on the screen behind me,

  8. but I encourage you to have a Bible open in front of you,

  9. because we'll be flipping around a few other places as well,

  10. and you can find that on page 938.

  11. Titus 2, 11 through 15. Follow along with me as I read.

  12. For the grace of God has appeared,

  13. bringing salvation for all people,

  14. training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions,

  15. and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

  16. waiting for our blessed hope,

  17. the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

  18. who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness,

  19. and to purify for himself a people for his own possession,

  20. who are zealous for good works.

  21. Declare these things.

  22. Exhort and rebuke with all authority.

  23. Let no one disregard you.

  24. Let's pray once more.

  25. Lord, this is your word.

  26. Father, this word is so full of treasures for us to uncover

  27. and explore and cherish.

  28. And so we pray that we would do that now.

  29. Would you help us to grasp,

  30. for the first time or for the thousandth time,

  31. help us to grasp the goodness of you and your glory,

  32. the goodness of the doctrine of God.

  33. We pray this in Christ's name.

  34. Amen.

  35. There is a poem that I think about often.

  36. I don't know many poems,

  37. but this is one of the few that I know.

  38. It's one of my favorite quotes from John Bunyan.

  39. It's not Paul Bunyan,

  40. the big lumberjack with the big blue ox.

  41. John Bunyan, the great Puritan.

  42. It says this,

  43. Run, John, run, the law demands,

  44. but gives us neither feet nor hands.

  45. Far better news the gospel brings.

  46. It bids us fly and gives us wings.

  47. Another version by Ralph Erskine.

  48. It says it like this,

  49. A rigid matter was the law,

  50. demanding brick, denying straw.

  51. But when with gospel tongue it sings,

  52. it bids me fly and gives me wings.

  53. Here's what it means.

  54. The law, it makes demands,

  55. but it provides no power to accomplish what it demands.

  56. But the gospel provides both the power

  57. and the capacity to live a life of godliness.

  58. See, our capacity for godliness,

  59. it does not come from us.

  60. We can't muster up the strength to be godly.

  61. We have no ability in ourself

  62. to keep the law of God,

  63. to please God on our own.

  64. We have to look outward,

  65. out of ourself.

  66. That's called faith.

  67. Looking outward,

  68. out of yourself,

  69. to find that strength.

  70. You know, our passage this morning

  71. begins with the word for.

  72. You see that here in verse 11.

  73. For the grace of God has appeared.

  74. That word for is a connector.

  75. It is connecting this passage,

  76. our passage this morning,

  77. to the passage right before it.

  78. What Paul has just said right before it.

  79. You know, sometimes we treat the Bible

  80. like it's disconnected.

  81. Like Paul somehow forgot

  82. what he was saying last week,

  83. and now he picks up

  84. with some totally new thought this week,

  85. and he's disconnected.

  86. The Bible isn't written like that.

  87. The Bible was written by people,

  88. humans.

  89. This book, Titus,

  90. is a letter written by a person.

  91. He was divinely inspired

  92. by the Spirit of God, yes,

  93. but he's a person

  94. who uses words

  95. in the same way that we do,

  96. who uses thoughts

  97. in the same way that we do,

  98. who uses words to argue

  99. in the same way that we do.

  100. So when he says,

  101. for the grace of God has appeared,

  102. we know that he's given a reason.

  103. He's given a basis,

  104. an explanation,

  105. a foundation

  106. for what he has just commanded us

  107. in our passage last week,

  108. and we do this all the time.

  109. Let's go get lunch,

  110. for because I'm feeling hungry.

  111. Let's go to bed,

  112. for because I'm feeling tired.

  113. Let's get dressed,

  114. for because it's time

  115. to go to church.

  116. Paul has been building a case

  117. here in the book of Titus

  118. that faith accords

  119. with godliness.

  120. Christians should not,

  121. like the Cretans were doing,

  122. should not profess

  123. to know God with our mouths,

  124. but then deny him

  125. with our actions.

  126. If we say that we have received

  127. new life in Christ,

  128. but nothing is new

  129. about our life,

  130. Paul says something

  131. is dramatically wrong.

  132. And so Paul showed us last week

  133. what godliness might look like

  134. for us,

  135. for every member of the church.

  136. If you were here last week,

  137. there was something

  138. for all of us here

  139. in chapter 2,

  140. verses 1 through 10.

  141. There was instructions

  142. for old men,

  143. young men,

  144. older women,

  145. younger women,

  146. servants in the church,

  147. and servants in the home.

  148. Every single one of us

  149. in Christ is called

  150. to a life

  151. that is distinct

  152. from the world around us.

  153. He gave us commands

  154. last week.

  155. But you may have left

  156. last week wondering,

  157. how do I do that?

  158. How do I do that?

  159. How could I possibly

  160. live a godly life?

  161. What's the basis

  162. or the power

  163. or the motivation

  164. for living a life

  165. like this?

  166. Hopefully you didn't,

  167. but you may have left

  168. last week discouraged,

  169. feeling like I could

  170. never live up

  171. to what Paul has described

  172. here in verses 1 through 10.

  173. So this morning,

  174. Paul brings you good news.

  175. He says,

  176. for the grace of God

  177. has appeared.

  178. Last week he bid us fly,

  179. this week he gives us wings.

  180. And we should take note

  181. here this morning

  182. that this is distinctly different

  183. from every other religion

  184. in the world.

  185. Every world religion

  186. gives commands.

  187. Every religion

  188. gives instructions.

  189. Every religion

  190. has expectations.

  191. No other religion

  192. gives the power

  193. to do it.

  194. Every other religion

  195. says,

  196. hey, here's how you

  197. get to our God.

  198. Here's how you do it.

  199. Good luck.

  200. Earn it.

  201. Do it.

  202. Do better.

  203. Try better.

  204. Work harder.

  205. Be better.

  206. Be the best you can be

  207. and maybe,

  208. hopefully,

  209. you'll make it.

  210. Church,

  211. we need to know

  212. that's not how

  213. Christianity works.

  214. The gospel says

  215. God saves.

  216. God calls.

  217. God trains.

  218. God redeems.

  219. God justifies.

  220. God sanctifies.

  221. God preserves.

  222. God sustains.

  223. God purifies.

  224. God glorifies.

  225. God.

  226. God is about God.

  227. And with that confidence

  228. and that dependence

  229. upon God,

  230. we pursue godliness

  231. as his children.

  232. As his children.

  233. No other religion

  234. in the world

  235. says anything

  236. close to that.

  237. Our passage

  238. this morning,

  239. it roots all

  240. of our efforts

  241. for godliness,

  242. all of our pursuit

  243. of the Lord,

  244. all of our striving,

  245. all of our labor

  246. in the good news

  247. of what God has done

  248. and what God has promised

  249. in the gospel

  250. of Jesus Christ.

  251. This gospel

  252. is the motivation

  253. and the power

  254. for godly living.

  255. So Paul gives us

  256. two life-changing truths

  257. here in our passage

  258. this morning.

  259. Two life-changing truths.

  260. This is our outline

  261. this morning.

  262. If you're taking notes,

  263. I encourage you

  264. to follow along

  265. this way.

  266. This is our motivation

  267. and our power

  268. for godliness.

  269. Two life-changing truths.

  270. Christ has come

  271. and Christ will come again.

  272. Two life-changing truths.

  273. If we understand

  274. these two truths,

  275. we will pursue

  276. a life of godliness

  277. here in the present age.

  278. Two truths.

  279. Christ has come

  280. and Christ will come again.

  281. First,

  282. Paul says,

  283. live this way,

  284. be godly,

  285. pursue godliness.

  286. Why?

  287. What's the basis

  288. of our pursuit?

  289. Verse 11,

  290. he says,

  291. for the grace of God

  292. has appeared.

  293. And so he says,

  294. be holy,

  295. pursue godliness,

  296. for,

  297. because,

  298. here's the basis,

  299. because Christ has come.

  300. See,

  301. Paul is looking backwards

  302. to what we call

  303. the incarnation of Christ.

  304. He's talking about

  305. the first coming

  306. of Jesus.

  307. The incarnation

  308. of the son of God.

  309. Christians,

  310. we don't believe

  311. that Jesus was just

  312. another man,

  313. just another good teacher,

  314. just another religious figure.

  315. We believe that

  316. just over 2,000 years ago

  317. a miracle happened.

  318. The son of God

  319. became man.

  320. And Paul says,

  321. your holiness now,

  322. today,

  323. in this present age,

  324. is only possible

  325. because of something

  326. that happened

  327. 2,000 years ago.

  328. But why is that?

  329. What is it,

  330. specifically,

  331. about this event

  332. 2,000 years ago

  333. that's still

  334. transforming lives

  335. today?

  336. Look with me

  337. to verse 11.

  338. It is interesting,

  339. isn't it,

  340. that Paul is talking

  341. about the coming

  342. of Christ,

  343. but he doesn't say

  344. Christ has appeared,

  345. does he?

  346. What does he say?

  347. The grace

  348. of God

  349. has appeared.

  350. The grace

  351. of God

  352. has appeared.

  353. The first

  354. coming of Christ

  355. is synonymous

  356. with the appearing

  357. of God's grace.

  358. Of course,

  359. God's grace

  360. has appeared

  361. all throughout

  362. the Old Testament.

  363. This isn't the first

  364. time we see

  365. God's saving power,

  366. God's grace

  367. appearing here.

  368. God has graciously

  369. promised and called

  370. and redeemed Israel.

  371. He's made

  372. gracious promises

  373. to Noah

  374. and Abraham

  375. and David

  376. all throughout

  377. the Old Testament.

  378. His grace is

  379. all over every page.

  380. But the appearing

  381. of Christ

  382. is the clearest

  383. and most spectacular

  384. appearing

  385. of the grace

  386. of God.

  387. This isn't just

  388. grace extended

  389. as it was

  390. in the Old Testament,

  391. this is grace

  392. embodied

  393. in the person

  394. of Christ.

  395. Now,

  396. at risk of

  397. overstatement

  398. here,

  399. there may not be

  400. a more easily

  401. misunderstood,

  402. quickly polarizing,

  403. toxically abused

  404. doctrine

  405. than the doctrine

  406. of God's grace.

  407. Now,

  408. it is important

  409. that we get this

  410. right.

  411. And one of the reasons

  412. why I love

  413. the Apostle Paul

  414. is he is all the time

  415. correcting

  416. our misunderstandings

  417. of God's grace

  418. and showing us

  419. how to live

  420. in light

  421. of that grace

  422. of God

  423. for the glory

  424. of God.

  425. So look with me

  426. again at verse 11

  427. and we see two functions

  428. of God's grace

  429. here in this verse.

  430. Two functions

  431. of God's grace.

  432. Grace saves

  433. and grace trains.

  434. Grace saves

  435. and grace trains.

  436. He says here,

  437. verse 11,

  438. the grace of God

  439. has appeared

  440. bringing salvation

  441. for all people

  442. and training us

  443. to renounce

  444. ungodliness

  445. and worldly passions

  446. and to live

  447. self-controlled,

  448. upright,

  449. godly lives

  450. in the present age.

  451. See,

  452. you gotta have both here.

  453. You can't have

  454. just one.

  455. God's grace

  456. came saving

  457. and God's grace

  458. came training.

  459. Paul says,

  460. grace came

  461. bringing salvation

  462. for all people.

  463. That promise

  464. that God made

  465. to the Jews

  466. in the Old Testament,

  467. I will be your God

  468. and you will be

  469. my people

  470. is now through Christ

  471. extended to all peoples

  472. of the earth.

  473. That's good news

  474. for us Gentiles,

  475. right?

  476. Amen?

  477. Amen?

  478. On the basis

  479. of Christ's perfect obedience,

  480. his sacrificial death

  481. on the cross

  482. in our place,

  483. in the place of sinners,

  484. his victorious resurrection

  485. from the grave

  486. received by grace

  487. through faith,

  488. all people can be saved

  489. from the condemnation

  490. and the eternal damnation

  491. earned from their sin.

  492. Now,

  493. not every individual

  494. will be saved.

  495. When he says,

  496. grace came bringing salvation

  497. for all people,

  498. don't get hung up there.

  499. That doesn't mean

  500. that every individual person

  501. will be saved.

  502. only those who hear

  503. the good news of Christ,

  504. only those who hear

  505. the words of the gospel

  506. and respond with saving

  507. faith and repentance

  508. in Christ Jesus

  509. will be saved.

  510. He's not saying

  511. all people will be saved.

  512. What he's saying here

  513. is that there are

  514. no ethnic,

  515. racial,

  516. social,

  517. regional,

  518. political limitations

  519. on the grace of God.

  520. God.

  521. This grace is made available

  522. to all the peoples

  523. of the earth.

  524. And so we pray

  525. every Sunday morning.

  526. We pray.

  527. Not just for what's going on

  528. here in Allendal,

  529. not just for what's going on

  530. in South Carolina.

  531. We pray every week

  532. for the nations.

  533. And you might notice,

  534. often we pray

  535. for a people group

  536. in a specific nation.

  537. A people group.

  538. We prayed last week

  539. for the people of Macau.

  540. And specifically,

  541. in Macau,

  542. we prayed for the people group

  543. the Hui people group.

  544. The Hui people group.

  545. They're a frontier people.

  546. That means that

  547. they have never heard

  548. the gospel.

  549. They have zero access

  550. to the gospel.

  551. To our knowledge,

  552. no one from the people group,

  553. the Hui people group,

  554. have ever heard

  555. the name Jesus.

  556. And they have zero access

  557. to it on their own.

  558. So someone must go.

  559. The word must come to them.

  560. They'll perish without it.

  561. I don't know

  562. how many people

  563. God will choose to save

  564. from the Hui people group.

  565. But I do know

  566. that every tribe,

  567. tongue,

  568. and nation

  569. will be gathered

  570. around the throne

  571. of God in glory.

  572. He's promised us that.

  573. That's what grace accomplished

  574. in the first coming of Christ.

  575. And so we pray.

  576. And so we send missionaries.

  577. So we support

  578. missionary efforts.

  579. So we proclaim the gospel

  580. in every corner of the earth

  581. with the confidence

  582. that God will do

  583. what he's promised.

  584. He will save

  585. all the peoples

  586. of the earth.

  587. That's what Paul's saying here.

  588. Christ came.

  589. The grace of God came

  590. bringing salvation

  591. for all the peoples

  592. of the earth.

  593. So we can say it like this.

  594. Not every person

  595. will be saved

  596. without distinction.

  597. No, excuse me.

  598. Run that back.

  599. Run that back.

  600. Not every person

  601. will be saved

  602. without exception,

  603. but all peoples

  604. will be saved

  605. without distinction.

  606. Say that again.

  607. Not every person

  608. will be saved

  609. without exception,

  610. meaning all peoples

  611. are saved,

  612. but all peoples

  613. will be saved

  614. without distinction.

  615. even you.

  616. Even me.

  617. Here's what this means

  618. for us, church.

  619. No one in this room

  620. can say,

  621. man, I wish I could get in

  622. on that saving grace of God,

  623. but I don't qualify.

  624. Christ's perfect life,

  625. not for me.

  626. His sacrificial death,

  627. not for me.

  628. I'm too old.

  629. I don't fit the criteria here.

  630. I'm too poor.

  631. I don't fit the criteria here.

  632. I vote this way.

  633. I act this way.

  634. I come from this background.

  635. I've done this.

  636. I've done that.

  637. I'm addicted to this.

  638. I'm addicted to that.

  639. Whatever the excuse may be,

  640. church,

  641. grace by definition

  642. is undeserved.

  643. The very definition

  644. of grace

  645. means you don't fit

  646. the criteria.

  647. The only criteria here

  648. is that you know

  649. you don't deserve

  650. what God is giving to you

  651. in Christ.

  652. You cannot earn His grace

  653. or it's no longer grace.

  654. I shared this example

  655. with someone the other day

  656. trying to explain this to them.

  657. This is like if a child

  658. does something they know

  659. they shouldn't do.

  660. Okay, this is my life.

  661. All right?

  662. This is where my mind goes

  663. with illustrations.

  664. Y'all bear with me.

  665. The parent saw it

  666. the whole way up and down.

  667. They know there's no denying it.

  668. Something wrong has happened.

  669. The child knows

  670. that they deserve punishment.

  671. They know that they've messed up.

  672. They've been caught in the act.

  673. But as an act of mercy,

  674. the parent says,

  675. I will withhold

  676. the punishment you deserve.

  677. That's mercy.

  678. Withholding what you deserve.

  679. Mercy, you don't get

  680. what you deserve.

  681. But grace goes a step further

  682. than that, doesn't it?

  683. Grace says,

  684. I saw what you did.

  685. I know you deserve punishment.

  686. But instead,

  687. I'm going to give you

  688. the biggest slice of cake

  689. I can fit on this plate.

  690. I'm going to reward you

  691. as if you had obeyed perfectly.

  692. You deserve punishment,

  693. but instead,

  694. you get a big old slice of cake

  695. because I love you.

  696. I'm going to reward you

  697. as if you never did anything wrong,

  698. as if you're absolutely perfect.

  699. That's grace.

  700. Mercy holds back

  701. what you do deserve,

  702. namely punishment

  703. for your sin.

  704. Grace gives you

  705. what you could never deserve.

  706. The blessing

  707. and the favor of God.

  708. Salvation from our sin

  709. and eternal life

  710. in Christ Jesus,

  711. our Lord.

  712. God's grace saves.

  713. But not only that,

  714. we don't stop there.

  715. God's grace trains.

  716. Look to verse 11 again.

  717. Look to verse 11 again.

  718. He says,

  719. The grace of God

  720. has appeared,

  721. bringing salvation

  722. for all people

  723. and training us

  724. to renounce ungodliness

  725. and worldly passions

  726. and to live self-controlled,

  727. upright,

  728. and godly lives

  729. in the present age.

  730. See,

  731. the grace of God

  732. came saving

  733. and the grace of God

  734. came training.

  735. You can't have one

  736. without the other.

  737. This is what we've been seeing

  738. all through the book of Titus,

  739. isn't it?

  740. If you have been given

  741. the gift of salvation,

  742. you have been enrolled,

  743. enlisted,

  744. you have been given

  745. the gift of sanctification.

  746. And that pace

  747. and that progress

  748. may look different

  749. from person to person,

  750. Christian to Christian,

  751. but the trajectory

  752. is the same.

  753. Everyone who's been saved

  754. by grace

  755. will be trained by grace

  756. for godliness

  757. in the present age.

  758. In other words,

  759. Jesus Christ

  760. did not just come

  761. to save you

  762. and leave you

  763. as you are.

  764. Jesus Christ

  765. came to save you

  766. and to change

  767. who you are.

  768. He did not come

  769. to save you

  770. and leave you

  771. as you are.

  772. Come as you are

  773. to Christ

  774. and expect

  775. that he will transform you

  776. from the inside out.

  777. You will not be the same.

  778. Jesus Christ

  779. did not come

  780. just to save you.

  781. He came to transform you.

  782. That change process,

  783. it begins

  784. the moment

  785. you put your faith

  786. in Christ,

  787. but that's not the end

  788. for us, Christian.

  789. It continues all the way

  790. until either we die

  791. or Christ returns.

  792. Your coming to faith

  793. in Christ

  794. was the beginning

  795. of your Christian walk.

  796. It's not the end.

  797. It's the beginning.

  798. We've all been enrolled

  799. in a lifelong training program

  800. called sanctification.

  801. That means you are

  802. being made holy.

  803. We've not arrived, church.

  804. There are parts of you

  805. and there are parts of me

  806. that need changing.

  807. Praise God,

  808. by his grace,

  809. he's doing it.

  810. Do not buy cheap grace

  811. that saves

  812. but does not train.

  813. Christians are those

  814. who, because of God's saving grace,

  815. welcome God's training grace

  816. in their lives.

  817. And so we say things like,

  818. I'm struggling

  819. with this particular sin.

  820. Can you help me?

  821. Will you pray for me?

  822. I can't seem

  823. to put this to death.

  824. I'm wrestling

  825. with this in my life.

  826. I can't seem

  827. to understand it

  828. but I know God

  829. is at work in me.

  830. He's working in me

  831. through this.

  832. He's training me.

  833. Christians depend

  834. on God's grace

  835. to save

  836. and his grace

  837. to train.

  838. We don't say things

  839. like,

  840. I'm good

  841. just the way I am.

  842. Thank you.

  843. I don't need any help.

  844. Thank you.

  845. No change needed here.

  846. I'm fine.

  847. I said my prayer

  848. when I was 10

  849. and that's it for me.

  850. Now I check out

  851. and I just got

  852. the free pass to glory.

  853. I'm good.

  854. Thank you.

  855. No.

  856. No change needed here.

  857. One sign

  858. that God's grace

  859. is at work in you

  860. is that you begin

  861. to realize

  862. how much you need it

  863. every day.

  864. Every day.

  865. you begin to depend on it.

  866. You want more of God

  867. not less.

  868. You want less of sin

  869. not more.

  870. You begin to realize

  871. that by God's grace

  872. not on your own strength

  873. and not on your own effort

  874. not your own grit

  875. but by God's grace alone

  876. you can say no to sin.

  877. Church, that's a miracle.

  878. And you want to do it.

  879. By God's grace alone

  880. you can say no to anger.

  881. By God's grace

  882. you can say no

  883. to drunkenness.

  884. You can say no

  885. to sexual addiction

  886. to pornography.

  887. You can say no

  888. to gossip

  889. and to slander.

  890. You can say no

  891. to divisive behavior.

  892. You can say no

  893. to laziness

  894. or gluttonousness.

  895. You have been rescued

  896. from slavery to sin

  897. and now are being trained

  898. in godliness.

  899. So we pursue it

  900. by the grace of God.

  901. God.

  902. If you want to grow

  903. in godliness

  904. remember

  905. Christ has come

  906. to save

  907. and to train.

  908. But not only that

  909. second

  910. remember Christ

  911. will come

  912. again.

  913. The second life

  914. changing truth

  915. here in our passage.

  916. Christ has come

  917. and Christ

  918. will come

  919. again.

  920. If we want to be

  921. moved and

  922. motivated

  923. toward godliness

  924. we not only

  925. look backwards

  926. to what Christ

  927. has done

  928. we must also

  929. look forward

  930. to what's

  931. to come.

  932. Christ

  933. will come

  934. again.

  935. Look with me

  936. to verse 13.

  937. Verse 13 here.

  938. Paul says

  939. we are to live

  940. self-controlled

  941. upright

  942. and godly

  943. lives

  944. in the present

  945. age

  946. waiting

  947. for our

  948. blessed hope

  949. the appearing

  950. of the glory

  951. of our great

  952. God and Savior

  953. Jesus Christ.

  954. If you write

  955. in your Bibles

  956. I want you to

  957. take a pen

  958. and mark

  959. these two things

  960. down here.

  961. If you're using

  962. a pew Bible

  963. go ahead and

  964. write in that one

  965. too.

  966. That's okay.

  967. Next person

  968. can see this note.

  969. I want you to

  970. circle up

  971. in verse 11

  972. where it says

  973. the grace

  974. of God

  975. has appeared

  976. and then again

  977. down in verse 13

  978. where it says

  979. the appearing

  980. of the glory

  981. of our great

  982. God and Savior

  983. Jesus Christ.

  984. See these

  985. these two

  986. appearings

  987. are everything

  988. for us.

  989. We have the

  990. first appearing

  991. the first coming

  992. of Christ

  993. appearing

  994. bringing salvation

  995. for undeserving

  996. sinners

  997. and then the

  998. second coming

  999. of Christ

  1000. the appearing

  1001. of the glory

  1002. of God

  1003. our risen Savior

  1004. who will come

  1005. and will finish

  1006. what he came

  1007. to do.

  1008. See our lives

  1009. are lived here

  1010. in the middle.

  1011. We're stuck

  1012. in the middle

  1013. between these

  1014. two comings.

  1015. We live in

  1016. between the two

  1017. advents of Christ.

  1018. That's the present

  1019. age that Paul

  1020. is talking about

  1021. here in verse 12

  1022. and so to live

  1023. godly lives

  1024. in this present

  1025. age here in the

  1026. middle.

  1027. Christians are

  1028. those who are

  1029. constantly looking

  1030. backwards to

  1031. the first coming

  1032. of Christ

  1033. looking backwards

  1034. to the first

  1035. appearing of

  1036. God's grace

  1037. grace embodied

  1038. and we are

  1039. looking forward

  1040. constantly in

  1041. hope of the

  1042. coming of

  1043. Christ the

  1044. appearing of

  1045. the glory of

  1046. God.

  1047. I remember

  1048. when I was

  1049. younger I'd be

  1050. willing to bet

  1051. I'm not alone

  1052. in this.

  1053. I was taught

  1054. that before you

  1055. cross the street

  1056. you need to

  1057. what?

  1058. Look both ways.

  1059. Yeah.

  1060. And sometimes

  1061. I'd even tell me

  1062. hey look that way

  1063. and then look that

  1064. way and then hey

  1065. you need to look

  1066. that way again.

  1067. Something might have

  1068. changed.

  1069. You gotta look

  1070. both ways.

  1071. And then you can

  1072. safely take a step

  1073. forward.

  1074. But it was clear

  1075. you don't just go

  1076. stepping without

  1077. looking.

  1078. And that's a recipe

  1079. for disaster.

  1080. You have to look

  1081. both ways before

  1082. you can safely

  1083. take a step

  1084. forward.

  1085. That's what Paul

  1086. is saying here.

  1087. Christian before

  1088. we can take a

  1089. single step

  1090. towards Christ

  1091. likeness.

  1092. Before we can

  1093. take a single

  1094. step towards

  1095. godliness.

  1096. We can't do it

  1097. without looking

  1098. both ways.

  1099. To the grace

  1100. of God that

  1101. has come and

  1102. to the glory

  1103. of God that

  1104. is to come.

  1105. If you want

  1106. to take a step

  1107. forward in

  1108. godliness

  1109. this is where

  1110. you look first.

  1111. first.

  1112. Then you can

  1113. take a step.

  1114. Then you can

  1115. safely progress.

  1116. Paul says here

  1117. in verse 13

  1118. he says we are

  1119. waiting for our

  1120. blessed hope.

  1121. We are waiting

  1122. for his coming.

  1123. We are waiting.

  1124. Christians by

  1125. definition are a

  1126. waiting people.

  1127. And I know I'm

  1128. not the only one

  1129. in the room who

  1130. doesn't like to

  1131. wait.

  1132. Amen?

  1133. Amen?

  1134. But this isn't

  1135. waiting like you

  1136. wait for a hurricane.

  1137. I don't think I

  1138. was the only one

  1139. my wife and I

  1140. who stayed up

  1141. Thursday evening

  1142. watching the

  1143. radar waiting

  1144. waiting

  1145. waiting

  1146. waiting

  1147. when is he

  1148. going to get

  1149. here?

  1150. What's he

  1151. going to do?

  1152. Woke up Friday

  1153. morning wind

  1154. rain

  1155. check the radar

  1156. again check the

  1157. forecast waiting

  1158. is it going to

  1159. get worse?

  1160. Is it going to

  1161. do more damage?

  1162. What kind of

  1163. destruction is this

  1164. going to bring?

  1165. We don't wait

  1166. like that for the

  1167. coming of Christ.

  1168. Christ.

  1169. Unbelievers ought

  1170. to wait like that

  1171. for the coming of

  1172. Christ.

  1173. But for us in

  1174. Christ this is a

  1175. hopeful waiting.

  1176. It is a hopeful

  1177. waiting.

  1178. Not wishful waiting

  1179. it is the Christian

  1180. hope.

  1181. The Christian hope

  1182. is certain.

  1183. This is good news.

  1184. Christ will return.

  1185. Christ will accomplish

1186. what he set out to

  1187. accomplish.

  1188. Christ will finish

  1189. what he began in

1190. you and we are to

  1191. wait for it with

  1192. patience and the

  1193. Bible says with

  1194. eagerness.

1195. You know one of the

  1196. most common ways

  1197. that the Bible talks

  1198. about the second

  1199. coming of Christ

  1200. is eagerness.

1201. I want to take you

  1202. to just a few

  1203. passages here.

  1204. You can mark this

  1205. down for later.

  1206. Eagerness.

  1207. Are you eager for

  1208. the return of Christ?

  1209. Romans 8 23

  1210. says not only the

  1211. creation but we

  1212. ourselves who have

  1213. the first fruits of

  1214. the spirit grown

  1215. inwardly as we

  1216. wait eagerly for

  1217. our adoption as

  1218. sons.

  1219. The redemption of

  1220. our bodies.

  1221. You hear that word?

  1222. Eager.

  1223. Galatians 5 5 for

  1224. through the spirit

  1225. by faith we

  1226. ourselves eagerly

  1227. wait for the hope

  1228. of righteousness.

  1229. That's what we're

  1230. waiting for.

  1231. The hope of

  1232. righteousness is

  1233. coming.

  1234. Are we are we

  1235. eager for it to

  1236. come?

  1237. Hebrews 9 28

  1238. So Christ having

  1239. been offered once

  1240. to bear the sins

  1241. of many that's

  1242. his first coming

  1243. Christ Christ came

  1244. to save grace

  1245. appeared to save

  1246. to bear the sins

  1247. of many will appear

  1248. a second time not

1249. to deal with sin but

  1250. to save those who

  1251. are eagerly waiting

  1252. for him.

  1253. See we are eagerly

  1254. waiting our final

  1255. salvation the

  1256. fulfillment of what

  1257. he came to do.

  1258. This is a joyful a

  1259. happy and eager a

  1260. hopeful a joy filled

  1261. waiting and it's it's

  1262. difficult not because

  1263. we dread what's coming

  1264. but because we cannot

1265. wait for it to get

  1266. here.

1267. I saw on the news

  1268. again as I'm sure

1269. many of you did there

  1270. were people stranded

  1271. in Florida because of

  1272. the hurricane out

  1273. standing on the top

  1274. of their cars waiting

  1275. for help to come.

  1276. Christian are waiting

1277. as if we were were

  1278. stranded here waiting

  1279. for deliverance to

  1280. come.

  1281. Knowing it has been

  1282. promised knowing knowing

  1283. he's kind of he's

  1284. going to come he's

  1285. going to arrive we

  1286. don't know when we

  1287. don't know at what

  1288. moment he'll be here

1289. but he will come he

  1290. will come he will

  1291. rescue us he will

1292. come and so we wait

  1293. with eager anticipation

1294. how eager are you for

  1295. his return.

  1296. Does it consume your

  1297. thoughts and influence

  1298. your actions you know

1299. if we if we really set

1300. our our minds and our

  1301. thoughts and our hearts

  1302. there thought hard had

  1303. our hearts full of

  1304. longing for this this

  1305. return of Christ I'm

  1306. certain there would be

  1307. an explosive difference

1308. in the way we go about

  1309. our lives.

1310. see our holiness is fueled

1311. by our eagerness not only

1312. is this a hopeful waiting

1313. it is also a holy waiting

  1314. our holiness this holiness

1315. that that Paul is calling

1316. us to it's fueled by

  1317. eagerness waiting longing

  1318. looking anticipating the

  1319. return of Christ we've

1320. already spent time here so

  1321. I won't belabor the

1322. point but it's clear Paul

1323. he's bringing it up again

1324. here and he reminds us

1325. again in verse 14 of why

  1326. Christ came what Christ

1327. came to do look at verse

1328. 14 says he gave himself

1329. for us to redeem us from

1330. all unlawing it from all

  1331. lawlessness and to purify

1332. for himself a people for

1333. his own possession to save

1334. you and to change you to

1335. make you holy to to redeem

1336. you and to purify you those

1337. he came to save he promises

1338. to purify so that we would

1339. profess to know him with our

1340. mouths and adorn the doctrine

1341. of God with our actions and

1342. so our time of waiting now

1343. church is a time of being made

1344. holy he will not leave you as

1345. you are two main ways that

1346. this happens in our lives one

1347. is what happens to us I'll

1348. tell you something that you

  1349. already know that terrible

1350. things happen to everyone in

  1351. this life believer non-believer

1352. tall short rich poor all of us

1353. suffer in this life becoming a

1354. Christian will not protect you

  1355. from suffering quite the

1356. opposite but what a difference

1357. it makes for us in Christ to be

1358. able to to look ahead and to

1359. know and to remember that Christ

1360. will return that he's coming to

1361. make all things right that we may

1362. not understand and and may not

1363. quite grasp what God is doing but

1364. we know that God is at work that

1365. he's using every trial in the

1366. present age to prepare his

1367. people for glory for the

1368. believer in Christ God is using

  1369. every second every every

1370. moment every trial that we

1371. endure to purify you in Christ

1372. and to prepare you for eternity

1373. with him so Christians we

1374. believe that all of our lives

1375. every moment is ordained by God

1376. for our good and for his glory he

1377. is purifying us for himself and

1378. what this means Christian is that our

1379. trials are not meaningless God is at

1380. work your sickness is not meaningless

1381. your suffering is not meaningless your

1382. struggle is not meaningless God is at

1383. work I know there are are many in our

1384. church family who are are struggling

1385. with all sorts of of sickness all

1386. sorts of loss all sorts of of

1387. suffering if you are in Christ you are

1388. walking through purifying fire God is

1389. preparing you for the glory to come are

1390. you paying attention are you looking for

1391. what he's doing in you the second way

1392. that we grow in purity the second way

1393. that we grow in holiness in this

1394. present age is by our own active

1395. pursuit of it by our own active

1396. pursuit of it by the grace of God God

1397. gives us the desire to grow gives us

1398. the desire to pursue him and so we take

1399. it upon ourselves to commit to pursuing

1400. him through the ordinary means of grace

1401. Bible reading prayer confessing sin

1402. corporate worship gathering with other

1403. saints together committing to to walk

1404. alongside other believers this is what

1405. D.A. Carson calls grace driven effort I

1406. love this quote from D.A. Carson he says

1407. this people do not drift towards holiness

1408. apart from grace driven effort people do

1409. not gravitate toward godliness prayer

1410. obedience to scripture faith and delight

1411. in the Lord we drift toward compromise and

1412. call it tolerance we drift toward

1413. disobedience and call it freedom we

1414. drift toward superstition and call it

1415. faith we cherish the indiscipline of lost

1416. self-control and call it relaxation we

1417. slouch toward prayerlessness and delude

1418. ourselves into thinking we have escaped

1419. legalism we slide toward godlessness and

1420. convince ourselves we have been liberated

1421. you know another way we misunderstand the

1422. grace of God is to say we don't have to do

  1423. anything it's all of God it's all God's

1424. grace I can sit back and relax I don't

1425. need to to pray I don't need to open my

1426. Bible I don't need to share my faith I

1427. don't have to pursue godliness that sounds

1428. a lot like the Cretans doesn't it that

1429. sounds a lot like the error here in Crete no

1430. God's grace empowers your pursuit of

1431. godliness God's grace is what undergirds and

1432. empowers all of your efforts to please him it

1433. is God who works in you to will and to work for

1434. his good pleasure church you will not grow in

1435. godliness apart from grace driven effort

1436. let's not deceive ourselves church if we are

1437. not pursuing godliness we are not neutral

1438. and we will not drift towards holiness our

1439. natural drift is away from the Lord I'll tell

1440. you I tend to drift more towards television

1441. easier than I drift towards opening my Bible

1442. I'll be honest with you I drift more towards

1443. looking at my phone than I do towards prayer

  1444. it's discipline it's grace driven discipline

1445. that will will bring about the change that we

1446. need to see in our lives as we pursue the Lord

1447. together how can you grow in grace driven effort

1448. what are some areas of of of slack that we can shore up

1449. this week with grace driven effort it is hopeful it is holy and finally one more

1450. here this is a helpful waiting this is to be a a helpful waiting

1451. Paul says he gave himself to redeem us to purify for himself a people for his own

1452. possession who are zealous for good works this is one of the effects of God's grace in us he makes a

1453. people who are zealous for good works in other words Christ Christ came to create a people who share

1454. and extend the heart of God to others and while we wait for Christ to return we're not sitting on

1455. our hands and and biding our time and watching the the minutes on the clock roll by we are to be actively seeking ways to do good works to be helpful

  1456. to be helpful

1457. now Christians ought to care more about doing good works than anybody else in the world

1458. and we ought to expend ourselves more for the good of others than anyone else in the world not because we earn God's favor by our good works

1459. but because as we experience the life-changing grace of God in our lives as we experience his goodness towards us in Christ we can't help but extend that same grace and love and kindness to others around us

1460. we are saved by faith alone as Martin Luther says but the faith that saves is never alone

1461. have you heard that quote before we are saved by faith alone but the faith that saves is never alone he means it's always accompanied by good works

1462. Christ came to create zealots for good works those who are passionate about about extending the heart of God to others

1463. church Christ will return and he will reward every good work done for his glory in the present age and so we we live every day in the present age in light of that coming day when Christ will appear

1464. and the glory of God will be made manifest

1465. one practical thing for us to pray I think this week

1466. Lord make us zealous for good works

1467. it's a dangerous prayer but I encourage you to pray

1468. Lord make me zealous for good works show me what the needs are around me show me how I can love my neighbor as myself

1469. show me how I can be selfless show me how I can how I can exhibit the love of Christ towards others this week

1470. let me show the power of your grace by my godliness and by my good works

1471. let our light so shine before others

1472. that they may see our good works and give glory to our father who is in heaven

  1473. amen

  1474. the book of Titus

  1475. calls you

  1476. Christian

  1477. to be distinct

1478. not just in our pursuit of godliness but in the basis of our pursuit

1479. we don't seek to earn our way to God by our goodness

1480. our chances of earning God's approval

1481. earning God's pleasure do not change one decimal point with our holiness

1482. with our self-improvement rather we rest on the good news of the gospel

1483. run John run the law demands but gives us neither feet nor hands

1484. far better news the gospel brings which bids us fly and gives us wings

  1485. see our salvation

1486. and our sanctification are found in the fact that Christ

  1487. has come

  1488. the grace of God

  1489. has appeared and our

1490. our certain hope of glory

1491. our hope that that Christ will accomplish what he came to do is found in the fact that

1492. that God's glory is coming

  1493. the second coming

  1494. of Christ

  1495. all of grace

  1496. church

  1497. we're going to stand

1498. and sing in just a moment a hymn that

  1499. I know is familiar

1500. that's everyone in the room

1501. we've probably sung this a thousand times

1502. before but I want you to consider these words as we sing them

1503. don't let it just be routine

  1504. repetition

  1505. let it be worship

1506. worship him for the truths of what we sing

  1507. amazing grace

  1508. how sweet the sound

  1509. grace

1510. that saved a wretch like me

1511. I once was lost but now I'm found

  1512. was blind

  1513. but now I see

  1514. grace saving

  1515. grace redeeming

  1516. grace rescuing

1517. it was grace that taught my heart to fear

1518. and grace my fears relieved

1519. how precious did that grace appear

1520. the hour I first believed

  1521. grace training

  1522. grace teaching

  1523. grace comforting

  1524. grace assuring

  1525. through many dangers

  1526. toils and snares

  1527. I have already come

  1528. the

1529. tis grace that brought me safe thus far

1530. and grace will lead me home

  1531. grace preserving

  1532. grace sustaining

  1533. grace

  1534. grace drawing us

1535. bringing us all the way

  1536. through the trial

  1537. to

  1538. glory

  1539. when we've been there

  1540. ten thousand years

1541. bright shining as the sun

1542. we have no less days

1543. grace to sing God's praise

1544. than when we first begun

  1545. grace glorifying

  1546. grace exulting

1547. in the glory of God

  1548. let's pray

  1549. father we praise you

1550. for your grace at work in us

  1551. who believe

  1552. we praise you that

  1553. godliness is not

1554. something that we could ever

1555. dream up on our own

1556. that our efforts though they're weak

  1557. lord

1558. father we pray and we thank you

1559. we praise you that you've provided

1560. everything we need for life and godliness

1561. through the gospel of Christ

1562. and father if there are any

1563. here who have not yet received that

1564. saving grace we pray even now

  1565. that you would

1566. you would call them draw them to

  1567. yourself

1568. and for the rest of us lord we pray

  1569. for growth in godliness

  1570. for your glory

1571. we ask in Christ's name

  1572. amen
