  1. Well, if you are a guest with us this morning, welcome.

  2. Full disclosure, this might be a weird sermon for you.

  3. And even if you have been coming for a while, if you've been attending church for many years,

  4. this might in fact be a weird sermon for you.

  5. Our typical practice is to preach straight through books of the Bible.

  6. You open it up, chapter 1, verse 1, and you work your way all the way through to the end.

  7. And what this does is it helps us to get the big picture of what's going on in the book.

  8. It helps us to understand exactly what God is saying here in each book of the Bible.

  9. But also what it does, what it means for me, is that I am not able to skip over difficult passages.

  10. Uncomfortable passages.

  11. You know, you may not know this, but some passages of Scripture are less popular than others.

  12. Did you know that?

  13. Some passages are harder to swallow than others.

  14. And I don't have the luxury, you would notice, if I just happen to skip over a section of Scripture.

  15. And I don't want to do that anyways.

  16. Okay, we are here to submit ourselves to the Word of God.

  17. Amen?

  18. Beginning to end.

  19. We want to receive what God has written in its entirety.

  20. So, let's open our Bibles to the book of Titus.

  21. Once more, the book of Titus.

  22. We're going to be in chapter 3, verses 9 through 11 this morning.

  23. We're concluding the body of Paul's letter to Titus this morning.

  24. Next week, Lord willing, we'll conclude with the conclusion of Paul's letter.

  25. But this morning, Paul is making one final appeal to Titus to defend the unity that the church was given in the gospel.

  26. To defend the unity.

  27. This precious unity that Christ purchased for the church in the gospel.

  28. It was under attack by false teachers who had come to these young churches there in Crete.

  29. And so, mentor Paul writes to co-worker Titus and says,

  30. You must protect it.

  31. You must defend it.

  32. You must guard the unity of the church at all costs.

  33. Keep the gospel and the glory of God at the center.

  34. Let's read it together now.

  35. Titus 3, verses 9 through 11.

    Titus 3:9–11

  36. Paul says,

  37. Father God, you know the weight of a text like this.

  38. So give me strength, Lord.

  39. And would you lead us through a difficult text even?

  40. Father, to worship.

  41. And to praise you for your goodness.

  42. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  43. Amen.

  44. All of us know someone who we would describe as a health nut.

  45. Someone who counts every calorie, measures every heartbeat, tracks every step,

  46. does everything that they can possibly do to ensure that so far as it depends upon them,

  47. that their body is healthy.

  48. I am not one of those people.

  49. I do care about my health.

  50. I try to exercise.

  51. I try to eat right.

  52. But I'm not obsessive in that way.

  53. Not entirely.

  54. The other day, Amanda, we had a birthday party for Cobb.

  55. Amanda made two cakes.

  56. I had three pieces that night and one piece the next morning for breakfast.

  57. So I'm not entirely health obsessed like that.

  58. But I do know that a basic part of taking care of your body is that you should, in general,

  59. avoid intaking what is bad for your health.

  60. And if there is something in you that is dangerous to your body, you should remove it.

  61. Avoid intaking what is bad.

  62. Avoid intaking what is bad.

  63. And remove what is dangerous.

  64. So, for example, Halloween is coming up.

  65. My children will probably, likely collect a lot of junk.

  66. And we're not that mean.

  67. We're going to let them eat some junk.

  68. We'll let them eat some candy.

  69. But only a little.

  70. They don't get to have candy for dinner.

  71. Okay?

  72. They get to have a piece here, a piece there.

  73. It'll probably last us a few years that way.

  74. We try to avoid overindulging on empty calories.

  75. Eat what is good for you and avoid what is bad.

  76. And likewise, we know that if something is in you, in your body, that is dangerous to you,

  77. it needs to come out.

  78. It needs to be removed.

  79. We visited my grandmother last week.

  80. We loaded up the van once again and made the trip down to Athens, Georgia, where she lives,

  81. to go celebrate her 90th birthday party.

  82. And we got there before the rest of the crowd got there.

  83. And so we got to sit and to talk with her.

  84. And I got to ask her about her health.

  85. And my grandmother has cancer.

  86. She's 90 years old.

  87. And she's been undergoing treatments for several years.

  88. And so just recently, the doctors found a spot on her skin.

  89. It's something new that developed.

  90. They took a look at it under the microscope and found out, sure enough, it was melanoma.

  91. It's dangerous.

  92. It's cancerous.

  93. It's aggressive.

  94. It's destructive to the health of her body.

  95. And so like any good doctor would do, he put forward a process, a plan of action, something

  96. to take care of the issue.

  97. He said, we're going to examine the problem.

  98. We're going to identify it.

  99. And then we're going to cut it out.

  100. And we're going to monitor it.

  101. We're going to make sure that it heals as it should.

  102. We're going to make sure it hasn't spread any further.

  103. No good doctor would ever look at that spot and say, you know what?

  104. Let's leave it.

  105. See what it does.

  106. Let it remain.

  107. No doctor, knowing how destructive that cancer is, would let it be.

  108. Just hope it goes away.

  109. For the good of the body, it must be removed.

  110. Well, we're coming to the end of the book of Titus.

  111. And throughout this letter, Paul could be described as a health nut.

  112. He is obsessed with the health, not of his body, but of the body of Christ, with the

  113. health of the church.

  114. His concern has been throughout the letter with the soundness or the health of the body.

  115. The church is the body of Christ.

  116. We are members of one another.

  117. The local church makes that invisible body visible.

  118. And churches, just like physical bodies, we can be healthy or we can be sickly.

  119. We can intake what is good and what's healthy and nutritious and beneficial and we can grow

  120. strong or we can feast on empty calories.

  121. We can have candy for dinner and grow weak.

  122. And even in healthy churches, from time to time, issues can crop up that are dangerous for the health of the body.

  123. And so like a good doctor, Paul tells Titus, we're going to have to do something here, Titus.

  124. We're going to have to remove something here, Titus.

  125. Don't leave it unaddressed.

  126. Don't let it spread.

  127. Do everything you can to remedy this situation.

  128. And if you cannot remedy the situation, it must be removed.

  129. So Paul here, he gives us two keys to protecting the health of the body.

  130. Two keys to protecting the health of the body.

  131. This is going to be our outline this morning.

  132. If you'd like to take notes, two keys to protecting the health of the body.

  133. Avoid foolish controversy and remove divisive people.

  134. The two parts that we see here in Titus 3, 9 through 11.

  135. Number one, avoid foolish controversy.

  136. And number two, remove divisive people.

  137. First, he says one key to protecting the health of the body is to avoid foolish controversy.

  138. Look here to verse 9 with me.

  139. Eyes on verse 9, please.

  140. He says, but avoid foolish controversies.

  141. Proversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law.

  142. For they are unprofitable and worthless.

  143. So avoid them.

  144. Don't pay them any mind.

  145. Paul says to Titus, stop entertaining.

  146. Stop listening to.

  147. Stop arguing over.

  148. Stop focusing on.

  149. Stop obsessing over little things.

  150. Not everything is worth the time.

  151. Stay the course.

  152. In fact, that word avoid here, it literally means turn your face.

  153. In the other direction.

  154. Pay it no mind.

  155. Do not give it the time of day.

  156. It's not exactly clear what the issue was specifically that Titus was dealing with here.

  157. That has Paul all riled up here in the book of Titus.

  158. But it seems to be tied to some obscure interpretation and application of the law.

  159. And so Paul, he calls them in chapter 1.

  160. He says these are Jewish myths.

  161. And here, he says that these are discussions of genealogies.

  162. They're questions about the law.

  163. It's likely similar to what Timothy was dealing with in Ephesus.

  164. If you make note of 1 Timothy chapter 1 verses 3 through 4.

    1 Timothy 1:3–4

  165. Paul says to Timothy there, he says,

  166. Remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine,

  167. nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies.

  168. Sound familiar?

  169. Which promote speculations rather than stewardship from God that is by faith.

  170. And again, in 2 Timothy chapter 2, he says,

    2 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  171. Avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness.

  172. That's the unprofitability that he's talking about.

  173. It's unprofitable and worthless.

  174. It's not producing the fruit of godliness that Paul wants to see from sound doctrine.

  175. And then here is a good reminder for Christians about to get on social media.

  176. Okay?

  177. He says,

  178. Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies.

  179. You know that they breed quarrels.

  180. So we may not know exactly what teaching was going on here specifically,

  181. but we do know how Paul feels about it.

  182. Right?

  183. They are unprofitable.

  184. They are worthless.

  185. They're not worth discussing.

  186. Avoid it.

  187. Turn your face the other direction.

  188. Now, I wonder if you have the same question that I do when I read this.

  189. What's interesting to me is that these were not discussions about some outside source.

  190. Okay?

  191. This was not some obscure teacher with his own writings that was distracting the church.

  192. No.

  193. What does it say?

  194. These were discussions about the law.

  195. The word of God.

  196. And I thought, Paul, that all scripture was God-breathed and is useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking, and training in righteousness.

  197. All scripture is useful.

  198. So how can you now say that these discussions about the law, the word of God, are useless, worthless, unprofitable?

  199. What's going on here?

  200. Shouldn't this matter to you, Paul?

  201. I'm glad you asked.

  202. I think what he's saying here is we need to major on the majors and minor on the minors.

  203. We need to major on the majors and minor on the minors.

  204. All scripture is God-breathed.

  205. All scripture is useful.

  206. But not everything in the Bible carries equal weight.

  207. Did I just say that?

  208. Yes, I did.

  209. Let me say it again.

  210. All scripture is useful.

  211. But not everything in the Bible carries equal weight.

  212. Does it not matter more whether Christ was born of a virgin than what colors were on Joseph's robe and what they may or may not represent?

  213. Does it not matter more that Christ actually died for our sin in our place?

  214. That he physically, actually rose up from the grave to conquer death?

  215. Then what type of fruit did Adam or Eve eat?

  216. Was it an apple or was it a pomegranate?

  217. Was it a big fish?

  218. Was it a whale that swallowed up Jonah?

  219. What type of furniture did Jesus make in his carpentry shop?

  220. How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

  221. Was Goliath seven feet tall or nine feet tall or eleven feet tall?

  222. Do you get my picture?

  223. The issue here, it wasn't theological curiosity.

  224. I want to be clear.

  225. We should be curious about God's word.

  226. We should investigate it.

  227. Ask questions of it.

  228. I went to seminary.

  229. I wrote a paper on genealogies.

  230. Comparing the genealogies of Christ.

  231. Paul is not against theological curiosity.

  232. But not everything is of equal importance.

  233. Be curious.

  234. Ask questions.

  235. Seek answers.

  236. But church, do not get distracted.

  237. Do not get distracted.

  238. Eat a little bit of candy, but do not eat it for dinner.

  239. Feast on what's good.

  240. Feast on what's nutritious for you.

  241. All doctrine, properly weighed, properly studied, should lead to devotion.

  242. But wrongly weighed, wrongly applied, leads to distraction.

  243. And at worst, leads to division.

  244. Everything in scripture is worthy of our devotion.

  245. It's worthy of our discussion, but not equally worthy of obsession.

  246. And not everything is worthy of division.

  247. The early church had a saying.

  248. They used to say, in essentials, unity.

  249. In non-essentials, diversity.

  250. In all things, charity.

  251. I think we'd be wise to recover that sort of sentiment in Christianity today.

  252. In essentials, unity.

  253. In non-essentials, diversity.

  254. In all things, charity.

  255. We have to major on the majors and minor on the minors.

  256. Be convinced.

  257. Be convinced.

  258. But do not enter foolish controversy over the minors.

  259. Major on the majors.

  260. And be convinced.

  261. But do not create unnecessary division and tension over the minors.

  262. Not every issue is worth fighting over.

  263. And not every hill is worth dying on.

  264. Not every theological difference between you and another brother and sister in Christ

  265. makes them a heretic or a false teacher.

  266. You know, I just, I grieve over the ways that I hear some Christians speaking about other Christians

  267. that just don't belong to their camp.

  268. And so they must be the enemy.

  269. They must be wrong.

  270. They must be heretical.

  271. Must be false teacher.

  272. Just because we divide or disagree on minor issues.

  273. Not every hill is a hill to die on, church.

  274. There's always room for charity in all things.

  275. We harm the body when we treat every issue with equal weight.

  276. And when we're quick to enter into foolish controversy.

  277. So, how do we rightly weigh the scriptures?

  278. That's the question, right?

  279. How do we rightly weigh the scriptures?

  280. Well, you may be familiar with a concept called theological triage.

  281. Theological triage.

  282. I believe Al Mohler was the first to actually coin that term.

  283. And I'll paraphrase here from an article that he wrote in 2005.

  284. He takes that from the medical world.

  285. So, maybe you're not familiar with theological triage.

  286. You're probably familiar with triage.

  287. Medical triage.

  288. And he says,

  289. And so, they have to sort these issues out.

  290. They've got to figure out which is most important.

  291. So, that they can treat them with the proper treatment.

  292. And so, what they do is they use a color-coded system of tags.

  293. Colored tags.

  294. Black tag.

  295. That's bad news.

  296. That's untreatable.

  297. The person is either dead or they're in such a condition that it can't be treated.

  298. It's uncurable, untreatable.

  299. Red tag is the most urgent.

  300. There's a chance.

  301. It's life-threatening.

  302. There's a chance that with the right treatment quickly applied,

  303. we can bring this person back to life.

  304. Yellow tag.

  305. They're in stable condition.

  306. Not likely to die.

  307. They still need serious treatment.

  308. On and on and on.

  309. So, he gets a white tag,

  310. which means they're just people that wanted to pay for an ambulance ride for some reason.

  311. Not sure why they're there.

  312. And so, Mohler and others,

  313. I'd recommend a guy named Gavin Ortland to you.

  314. They take that idea of medical triage and apply it to the Bible.

  315. And to our conversations about the Word.

  316. I think it's a helpful way for us to think about it.

  317. So, first-tier issues.

  318. First-tier issues.

  319. These are issues of the most importance.

  320. Highest importance.

  321. The Trinity.

  322. The divinity of Christ.

  323. Salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone.

  324. These are worth dying for.

  325. You cannot be a Christian if you don't hold to these beliefs.

  326. The resurrection of Christ.

  327. The second coming of Christ.

  328. These are of utmost first-tier importance.

  329. Then you have second-tier issues.

  330. Baptism, for example.

  331. Is it important?

  332. Yes.

  333. Does the Bible speak to it?

  334. Yes.

  335. Friend, you ought to be convinced about your position on baptism.

  336. The Bible speaks on it.

  337. We believe we're a Baptist church.

  338. We believe baptism is for believers.

  339. Our Presbyterian brothers and sisters believe that baptism is for believers and their children.

  340. We take a difference of interpretation here, but they are not heretics.

  341. They are our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  342. So, we divide into separate churches.

  343. But we, as Mark Dever says, we build low fences and we shake hands often.

  344. They're our friends.

  345. We don't divide over such things.

  346. We disagree in love.

  347. And then you have third-tier issues.

  348. Down here at the bottom.

  349. Now, these are issues that we can be a part of the same church family and we can disagree.

  350. We don't have to argue.

  351. We don't have to divide.

  352. We don't have to throw stones at one another.

  353. We can be a part of one big happy family and take positions that are different.

  354. Maybe Scripture speaks to it, but it's a little less clear.

  355. It's a little less easily discerned.

  356. The details surrounding the second coming of Christ, for example.

  357. We've been studying Revelation.

  358. Is He coming?

  359. First tier.

  360. Yes, you better believe it.

  361. Will He judge the living and the dead?

  362. You better believe it.

  363. First tier.

  364. He's coming.

  365. Will the new heavens and the new earth be glorious when He comes to reign?

  366. Yes, first tier.

  367. You better believe it.

  368. When and how and where and what will be the signs when He comes?

  369. And how do we interpret literal millennium, figurative millennium?

  370. How do we understand Revelation?

  371. We can disagree here.

  372. And that's okay.

  373. And essentials unity and non-essentials diversity and all things charity.

  374. And way down the list here, way down the list, are the issues that Titus is dealing with here in Crete.

  375. Arguments over genealogies?

  376. Are you kidding me?

  377. A list of names?

  378. We're going to divide over that?

  379. These names that promote speculation rather than stewardship?

  380. We're going to spend our time obsessing over that?

  381. See, the problem here was an over-fascination with minor points of the law in a way that distracted them and everyone around them from the main point of the law,

  382. the main point of the Bible, namely the glory of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  383. That demands our full devotion.

  384. That is what demands our full attention.

  385. Isn't that what Paul has just said in chapter 3, verses 3 through 8?

  386. This is what we saw last week.

  387. The gospel.

  388. Make a big deal of the gospel church.

  389. Make a big deal of our sinful past.

  390. Look here.

  391. Chapter 3, verses 3 through 8.

  392. He says,

  393. We ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures,

  394. passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others, hating one another.

  395. We're no better than anyone else.

  396. We're no more worthy of salvation than anyone else.

  397. Make a big deal of our need for redemption.

  398. And then make a big deal of God's saving grace in the gospel.

  399. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God, our Savior, appeared, He saved us.

  400. He saved us.

  401. He saved us.

  402. His work, His power, His mercy, His plan, His steadfast love.

  403. He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His great mercy.

  404. Make a big deal of His mercy, church.

  405. Make a big deal of regeneration, our new life in Christ, new birth.

  406. You've been born again.

  407. Do you want to talk about that?

  408. Do you want to make a big deal about that?

  409. You've been reborn by the power of His Holy Spirit, the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

  410. Call attention to that.

  411. Rejoice in that.

  412. Make a big deal of Jesus, Christ our Savior.

  413. We worship a risen King.

  414. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Lamb of God, slain for us, risen from the grave, coming again to judge the world.

  415. Isn't that worthy of our minds?

  416. Isn't that worthy of our discussion?

  417. Isn't that worthy of our emphasis as we gather, as we discuss, as we study?

  418. Isn't that worthy of our lives?

  419. Is that of first-tier importance for you as you study the Word?

  420. As you talk with other believers?

  421. Is that what comes through as the emphasis of your life?

  422. Make much of our status in Him, church.

  423. Justified.

  424. Forgiven.

  425. Declared innocent in the sight of God.

  426. Anyone who trusts in Christ.

  427. Anyone.

  428. Your long record of sin that spills over the judge's table, out the front door of the courtroom,

  429. is nailed to the cross.

  430. You are declared righteous.

  431. You are forgiven and received and adopted as a son or a daughter of the King.

  432. Is that not worthy of our attention?

  433. The hope that we have of eternal life free from sin forever with God.

  434. Eternal life in the new heavens and the new earth.

  435. Is that not worthy of our attention?

  436. Don't get distracted.

  437. And don't divide over worthless things.

  438. A healthy church feasts on the good news of the gospel.

  439. Amen?

  440. Amen?

  441. That's why he says in verse 8,

  442. I want you, Titus, to insist on these things.

  443. Insist on these things, church.

  444. Don't get distracted.

  445. These things are excellent and profitable for people.

  446. These things are what leads to godliness in the church.

  447. But avoid all this other foolish talk.

  448. Unprofitable.

  449. Worthless.

  450. But sadly,

  451. even in a healthy church,

  452. issues can crop up

  453. from time to time

  454. that are dangerous for the health of the body.

  455. Everything is going well

  456. and then one day,

  457. cancer.

  458. Dangerous.

  459. Destructive.

  460. So Paul says,

  461. we must be ready to remove it.

  462. Avoid foolish controversy

  463. and second,

  464. remove divisive people.

  465. This is admittedly much harder to swallow.

  466. It's one thing to talk about ideas.

  467. Avoid foolish conversations,

  468. ideas,

  469. topics.

  470. It's another thing entirely

  471. to do what Paul says here in verses 10 and 11.

  472. For the sake of the health of the body,

  473. avoid foolish controversies

  474. and remove divisive people.

  475. Look there to verse 10 and 11 with me.

  476. He says,

  477. as for a person who stirs up division,

  478. after warning him once and then twice,

  479. have nothing more to do with him.

  480. Knowing that such a person is warped and sinful,

  481. he is self-condemned.

  482. Remove divisive people.

  483. This is not a small matter.

  484. And we should grieve to think about the potential

  485. of removing someone from our body.

  486. But Paul is clear here

  487. that if there is unrepentant divisiveness,

  488. unrepentant,

  489. let me say it again,

  490. unrepentant divisiveness,

  491. after many heartfelt attempts

  492. to bring them back,

  493. call them to repentance,

  494. draw them back to seek reconciliation,

  495. if they are persistent

  496. in their attempt to divide the church,

  497. Paul says they prove themselves

  498. to be warped and sinful.

  499. And they must be removed

  500. for the health of the body.

  501. I pray we never have to apply this scripture here.

  502. But the time may come.

  503. In my years of ministry,

  504. I've seen this happen once,

  505. where I sat in a room

  506. with other elders and deacons

  507. and ministry leaders

  508. and read this passage

  509. to an individual

  510. who had been stirring division

  511. in the church.

  512. Pleas for repentance

  513. had been made

  514. and made

  515. and made

  516. and made

  517. over the course of weeks

  518. and months

  519. of warning

  520. and calling to repentance.

  521. And I remember very clearly

  522. calling him

  523. to stop spreading division,

  524. opening this passage to him

  525. and calling him

  526. to stop spreading lies.

  527. And he said with hate in his voice,

  528. this will get worse.

  529. And he was right.

  530. I was thankful

  531. that this passage

  532. had been taught

  533. and understood

  534. by the church

  535. well before it needed

  536. to be applied.

  537. That they got it.

  538. So I want to ask

  539. four questions here.

  540. We're going to jump around

  541. to a few different places

  542. of scripture,

  543. so please have your Bibles open.

  544. I want to ask

  545. four questions here

  546. that I think

  547. will help us understand

  548. what's going on

  549. and what he's saying here.

  550. First question,

  551. what gift was given

  552. to the church

  553. in the gospel?

  554. What gift

  555. was given

  556. to the church

  557. in the gospel?

  558. There are many gifts

  559. given to the church

  560. in the gospel,

  561. but the one

  562. that was under attack

  563. here in Crete

  564. is the gift

  565. of unity.

  566. The gift

  567. of unity.

  568. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4:1–3

  569. verses 1 through 3.

  570. Paul says,

  571. I therefore,

  572. a prisoner

  573. for the Lord,

  574. urge you

  575. to walk

  576. in a manner

  577. worthy

  578. of the calling

  579. to which you

  580. have been called

  581. with all humility

  582. and gentleness,

  583. with patience,

  584. bearing with one another

  585. eager to maintain

  586. the unity

  587. of the Spirit

  588. in the bond

  589. of peace.

  590. In the gospel,

  591. Christ Jesus,

  592. he created

  593. spiritual unity.

  594. The sinners

  595. who were once

  596. divided from God

  597. are now united

  598. through faith

  599. in Christ,

  600. reunited

  601. to the Heavenly Father,

  602. and sinners

  603. who were once

  604. divided from one another

  605. are now through Christ

  606. in one body

  607. united to one another.

  608. Now,

  609. we don't create

  610. spiritual unity.

  611. We don't have the task

  612. to create unity

  613. in the church.

  614. We're given the task

  615. to maintain

  616. what we have been given

  617. in the gospel.

  618. Now,

  619. Paul says,

  620. be eager

  621. to maintain

  622. the unity

  623. of the Spirit

  624. in the bond

  625. of peace.

  626. We have to be

  627. reminded of this.

  628. Now,

  629. Paul has to tell us

  630. to do this

  631. because otherwise

  632. we slip into

  633. our own opinions,

  634. our own preferences,

  635. our own world.

  636. We want everybody

  637. to bend to our will

  638. and our way,

  639. get on board with us,

  640. and our desires

  641. is about us.

  642. And so,

  643. Paul tells us,

  644. he calls us

  645. in the power

  646. of the Spirit

  647. to bear

  648. with one another

  649. in love,

  650. with humility,

  651. with patience,

  652. with gentleness.

  653. Be eager

  654. to maintain

  655. the unity.

  656. Are we pursuing it?

  657. Church,

  658. are we eager

  659. to maintain

  660. the unity?

  661. Not do we want

  662. a unified church?

  663. Everybody wants

  664. a unified church.

  665. Uh-oh.

  666. Better speak right.

  667. Everybody wants

  668. a unified church.

  669. Are we pursuing it

  670. with eagerness?

  671. Are we praying for it,

  672. laying our preferences

  673. aside for the sake

  674. of unity?

  675. Keeping these

  676. first-tier issues

  677. at first importance

  678. for the sake of unity.

  679. We're probably

  680. not united

  681. in many things.

  682. Musical preferences,

  683. background,

  684. income level,

  685. upbringing,

  686. hair color.

  687. But we're united

  688. in the gospel.

  689. Keep that first.

  690. Second question.

  691. What authority

  692. was given

  693. to the church?

  694. what authority

  695. was given

  696. to the church?

  697. In short,

  698. the church

  699. is given

  700. authority

  701. to recognize

  702. that unity.

  703. The church

  704. is given

  705. authority

  706. to recognize

  707. that spiritual

  708. unity.

  709. Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  710. If you would

  711. turn there for me,

  712. because I want you

  713. to lay eyes

  714. on this passage.

  715. This is the passage

  716. that Pete read

  717. for us earlier.

  718. Matthew chapter 18

    Matthew 18:15–20

  719. verses 15

  720. through 20.

  721. Jesus says,

  722. if your brother

  723. sins against you,

  724. go and tell him

  725. his fault

  726. between you

  727. and him alone.

  728. Don't hold a grudge.

  729. Don't keep

  730. your offense silent.

  731. Don't harbor it

  732. inside of yourself.

  733. Talk to your brother

  734. between you

  735. and him alone.

  736. If he listens

  737. to you,

  738. you've gained

  739. your brother.

  740. Praise God.

  741. But if he does

  742. not listen,

  743. take one or two

  744. others along

  745. with you

  746. that every charge

  747. may be established

  748. by the evidence

  749. of two or three

  750. witnesses.

  751. If he refuses

  752. to listen to them,

  753. tell it to

  754. the church.

  755. Here's the authority.

  756. And if he refuses

  757. to listen

  758. even to the church,

  759. let him be to you

  760. as a Gentile

  761. and a tax collector.

  762. Truly I say to you,

  763. whatever you bind

  764. on earth

  765. shall be bound

  766. in heaven.

  767. Whatever you loose

  768. on earth

  769. shall be loosed

  770. in heaven.

  771. Again I say to you,

  772. if two of you

  773. agree on earth

  774. about anything

  775. they ask,

  776. it will be done

  777. for them

  778. by my Father

  779. in heaven.

  780. For where two

  781. or three

  782. are gathered

  783. in my name,

  784. there am I

  785. among them.

  786. you see the church

  787. is a community

  788. of the redeemed.

  789. We have been

  790. by the grace of God

  791. plucked out

  792. of belonging

  793. to the world.

  794. We now belong

  795. to the kingdom

  796. of God

  797. and the church

  798. is given

  799. incredible authority

  800. by God

  801. to recognize

  802. and to declare

  803. in the name of Christ

  804. who's in

  805. and who's out.

  806. that's what

  807. church membership

  808. is.

  809. It's a recognition

  810. by the church

  811. that each

  812. individual member

  813. is a member

  814. of the invisible church,

  815. is a member

  816. of the kingdom

  817. of God,

  818. that they are

  819. in fact saved

  820. by the grace

  821. of God.

  822. They have a credible

  823. profession of

  824. saving faith

  825. in Christ Jesus

  826. and so when the church

  827. adds a new member,

  828. what we're saying

  829. is we affirm

  830. your salvation.

  831. We believe

  832. as far as we can tell,

  833. we're not infallible,

  834. but as far as we can tell

  835. that you have been

  836. genuinely born again.

  837. We believe you are

  838. united to God

  839. and we are

  840. committing

  841. to walk

  842. alongside you.

  843. We're committing

  844. to help you

  845. live a life

  846. that is

  847. pleasing to God,

  848. honoring to Him,

  849. to disciple you

  850. and to serve you

  851. and to love you

  852. as a brother

  853. or sister

  854. in Christ.

  855. You are

  856. united to

  857. us.

  858. And when a church

  859. removes

  860. a member

  861. from among them,

  862. what they're saying

  863. is we can no longer

  864. in good conscience

  865. affirm

  866. your salvation.

  867. We can't say

  868. you're saved

  869. or not saved.

  870. We're not infallible.

  871. God alone knows that,

  872. but something

  873. is happening here.

  874. There's sufficient evidence,

  875. this posture

  876. of unrepentive

  877. divisiveness,

  878. of wanting to work

  879. against,

  880. destroy the church,

  881. that's not consistent

  882. with a profession

  883. of faith.

  884. And so,

  885. we release you

  886. back into

  887. the world.

  888. Church membership

  889. does not save anyone.

  890. Church discipline

  891. does not condemn

  892. anyone.

  893. Rather,

  894. the church,

  895. again,

  896. is given

  897. authority to

  898. recognize

  899. on behalf

  900. of Christ

  901. and to

  902. declare

  903. those who

  904. give evidence

  905. of regeneration

  906. or evidence

  907. not of us

  908. condemning,

  909. but of self-condemnation.

  910. So,

  911. third,

  912. what command

  913. was given

  914. for the divisive

  915. person?

  916. What command

  917. was given

  918. for the divisive

  919. person?

  920. First,

  921. is to seek

  922. reconciliation.

  923. First command

  924. is to seek

  925. restoration.

  926. The removal

  927. is not

  928. punitive,

  929. it is with

  930. tears,

  931. it is

  932. patient,

  933. it is

  934. slow,

  935. painful,

  936. it is

  937. painful.

  938. You know,

  939. this passage

  940. in Matthew

  941. 18,

  942. if your

  943. Bibles are

  944. still open

  945. there to

  946. Matthew 18,

  947. he says,

  948. if your

  949. brother sins

  950. against you,

  951. tell him,

  952. go bring

  953. others,

  954. bring the

  955. church,

  956. let him

  957. be to you

  958. as a

  959. Gentile

  960. and a

  961. tax collector.

  962. That passage

  963. is sandwiched

  964. there in

  965. between two

  966. parables.

  967. Do you see

  968. that there,

  969. Matthew 18?

  970. Two parables,

  971. parable of

  972. the lost

  973. sheep,

  974. we won't

  975. read them

  976. for the sake

  977. of time,

  978. and the

  979. parable of

  980. the unforgiving

  981. servant.

  982. Two slices

  983. of bread

  984. right there,

  985. the meat

  986. in the

  987. middle,

  988. this section

  989. on church

  990. discipline

  991. in Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  992. chapter 18.

  993. The parable

  994. of the

  995. lost sheep,

  996. you know

  997. it,

  998. it says

  999. there was

  1000. a shepherd

  1001. had a hundred

  1002. sheep,

  1003. he kept

  1004. ninety-nine,

  1005. the one

  1006. went off,

  1007. and what

  1008. happens?

  1009. He stays

  1010. with the

  1011. ninety-nine

  1012. and bid

  1013. good riddance?

  1014. No,

  1015. he pursues

  1016. the one

  1017. that went

  1018. away.

  1019. And it

  1020. concludes

  1021. here with

  1022. the heart

  1023. of God,

  1024. it says,

  1025. so it

  1026. is not

  1027. the will

  1028. of my

  1029. father who

  1030. is in

  1031. heaven that

  1032. one of

  1033. these little

  1034. ones should

  1035. perish.

  1036. And then

  1037. the parable

  1038. of the

  1039. unforgiving

  1040. servant,

  1041. there beneath

  1042. it begins

  1043. with Peter's

  1044. question,

  1045. Lord,

  1046. how often

  1047. will my

  1048. brother sin

  1049. against me

  1050. and I

  1051. forgive him?

  1052. Seven times?

  1053. the Lord

  1054. said to

  1055. him,

  1056. not seven

  1057. Peter,

  1058. but

  1059. seventy-seven.

  1060. I think

  1061. this should

  1062. tell us,

  1063. church,

  1064. that the

  1065. removal of

  1066. a member

  1067. from among

  1068. us should

  1069. never be

  1070. because of

  1071. our unwillingness

  1072. to forgive.

  1073. It should

  1074. never be

  1075. because of

  1076. the church's

  1077. hardened

  1078. posture.

  1079. the first

  1080. command in

  1081. any case

  1082. of church

  1083. discipline

  1084. is to

  1085. seek

  1086. reconciliation.

  1087. It's to

  1088. seek to

  1089. demonstrate

  1090. the heart

  1091. of God

  1092. to sinners,

  1093. to call

  1094. them to

  1095. repent,

  1096. to open

  1097. up your

  1098. arms,

  1099. to be

  1100. willing to

  1101. forgive,

  1102. not seven,

  1103. but 77

  1104. times if

  1105. they would

  1106. but repent.

  1107. But if

  1108. they will

  1109. not,

  1110. if this

  1111. is not

  1112. possible,

  1113. then with

  1114. tears,

  1115. with tears,

  1116. they must

  1117. be removed.

  1118. Surgery

  1119. is painful.

  1120. I've never

  1121. met anybody

  1122. who enjoyed

  1123. it.

  1124. But sometimes

  1125. for the sake

  1126. of the health

  1127. of the body,

  1128. it is

  1129. necessary.

  1130. So Paul

  1131. says,

  1132. have nothing

  1133. more to

  1134. do with

  1135. him.

  1136. If that

  1137. sounds

  1138. weighty,

  1139. if that

  1140. sounds

  1141. serious

  1142. to you,

  1143. it is.

  1144. And this

  1145. is not

  1146. a popular

  1147. section of

  1148. scripture.

  1149. And for

  1150. good reason,

  1151. this isn't

  1152. pleasant,

  1153. but sadly,

  1154. it is on

  1155. sad occasion

  1156. necessary.

  1157. When someone

  1158. has so

  1159. hardened

  1160. themselves in

  1161. sin,

  1162. this warped

  1163. and self-condemning

  1164. state that

  1165. will not

  1166. accept

  1167. reconciliation,

  1168. we don't

  1169. condemn them,

  1170. we recognize

  1171. that they

  1172. are self-

  1173. condemned.

  1174. Isn't that

  1175. judging?

  1176. Maybe you're

  1177. wondering that.

  1178. It is.

  1179. As we

  1180. were commanded

  1181. to do.

  1182. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  1183. chapter 5,

  1184. Paul says,

  1185. I'm writing

  1186. to you not

  1187. to associate

  1188. with anyone

  1189. who bears

  1190. the name

  1191. of brother.

  1192. Let me say

  1193. that again.

  1194. who bears

  1195. the name

  1196. of brother.

  1197. If he is

  1198. guilty of

  1199. sexual

  1200. immorality

  1201. or greed,

  1202. or is an

  1203. idolater,

  1204. reviler,

  1205. drunkard,

  1206. or swindler,

  1207. not even to

  1208. eat with

  1209. such a one,

  1210. for what

  1211. have I to

  1212. do with

  1213. judging

  1214. outsiders?

  1215. Is it

  1216. not those

  1217. inside the

  1218. church whom

  1219. you are

  1220. to judge?

  1221. God judges

  1222. those outside.

  1223. Purge the

  1224. evil person

  1225. from among

  1226. you.

  1227. Fourth

  1228. question.

  1229. what is

  1230. the goal

  1231. of removal?

  1232. What's

  1233. the point?

  1234. Couldn't

  1235. we just

  1236. leave it

  1237. alone?

  1238. Well,

  1239. there are

  1240. many goals.

  1241. Obedience

  1242. for one,

  1243. as I hope

  1244. we've seen,

  1245. this clear

  1246. command of

  1247. scripture,

  1248. our witness

  1249. for another.

  1250. What does

  1251. the outside

  1252. world say

  1253. when we

  1254. let a

  1255. divisiveness,

  1256. a spirit

  1257. of division

  1258. exist in

  1259. the church?

  1260. a warning

  1261. for other

  1262. believers,

  1263. the purity

  1264. of the

  1265. church,

  1266. the glory

  1267. of God,

  1268. but another

  1269. goal of

  1270. removal,

  1271. I want us

  1272. to see this,

  1273. is love.

  1274. It's love.

  1275. Our hope

  1276. and our prayer

  1277. in removing

  1278. anyone is

  1279. that by the

  1280. grace of

  1281. God,

  1282. they be

  1283. awakened to

  1284. the depth

  1285. of their

  1286. sin,

  1287. that they

  1288. see it

  1289. for what

  1290. it is,

  1291. and that

  1292. they be

  1293. restored in

  1294. full,

  1295. both to

  1296. the Lord

  1297. and to

  1298. the church.

  1299. The first

  1300. Corinthians 5,

  1301. again,

  1302. he says,

  1303. when you

  1304. are assembled,

  1305. church,

  1306. in the name

  1307. of the Lord

  1308. Jesus,

  1309. and my

  1310. spirit is

  1311. present with

  1312. the power

  1313. of the Lord

  1314. Jesus,

  1315. you are to

  1316. deliver this

  1317. man to

  1318. Satan for

  1319. the destruction

  1320. of the flesh.

  1321. He says,

  1322. send him out

  1323. of the church

  1324. and into

  1325. the world.

  1326. Treat him,

  1327. as Matthew 18

  1328. says,

  1329. as a Gentile

  1330. or a tax

  1331. collector.

  1332. But look

  1333. here,

  1334. here's the

  1335. goal,

  1336. so that

  1337. his spirit

  1338. may be

  1339. saved

  1340. in the

  1341. day of

  1342. the Lord.

  1343. The goal

  1344. is salvation,

  1345. is redemption,

  1346. is restored

  1347. unity.

  1348. So church,

  1349. we close

  1350. here with

  1351. hope.

  1352. This is the

  1353. hope of the

  1354. gospel.

  1355. No sinner

  1356. is too

  1357. far gone.

  1358. No sinner

  1359. is too

  1360. far

  1361. gone.

  1362. So long

  1363. as there

  1364. is breath

  1365. in our

  1366. lungs,

  1367. there is

  1368. opportunity,

  1369. there is

  1370. invitation

  1371. to repent

  1372. of our

  1373. sin,

  1374. to cast

  1375. ourselves

  1376. and to

  1377. trust in

  1378. Christ,

  1379. there is

  1380. hope for

  1381. the worst,

  1382. most hardened,

  1383. most difficult,

  1384. most divisive,

  1385. most ruined

  1386. sinner in

  1387. the world.

  1388. Like the

  1389. prodigal son,

  1390. if they would

  1391. only recognize

  1392. their state

  1393. and come

  1394. back home,

  1395. they would

  1396. with open

  1397. arms be

  1398. received by

  1399. their father.

  1400. Paul knew

  1401. this,

  1402. didn't he?

  1403. Murderer

  1404. of the

  1405. church,

  1406. persecutor

  1407. of Christ,

  1408. the chief

  1409. of sinners,

  1410. rescued

  1411. from his

  1412. sin by

  1413. the grace

  1414. of God,

  1415. restored to

  1416. fellowship with

  1417. Christ and

  1418. his people,

  1419. the church.

  1420. The saying

  1421. is trustworthy

  1422. and deserving

  1423. of full

  1424. acceptance that

  1425. Christ Jesus

  1426. came into

  1427. the world

  1428. to save

  1429. sinners of

  1430. whom I

  1431. am the

  1432. foremost,

  1433. but I

  1434. received mercy

  1435. for this

  1436. reason,

  1437. Paul says,

  1438. that in me

  1439. as the

  1440. foremost

  1441. sinner,

  1442. Jesus Christ

  1443. might display

  1444. his perfect

  1445. patience as

  1446. an example

  1447. to those

  1448. who were

  1449. to believe

  1450. in him

  1451. for eternal

  1452. life.

  1453. Do you

  1454. believe that

  1455. gospel?

  1456. Rejoice

  1457. that your

  1458. sins have

  1459. been forgiven.

  1460. Rejoice

  1461. that you

  1462. as an

  1463. undeserving

  1464. sinner have

  1465. been reconciled

  1466. to God

  1467. by the blood

  1468. of Christ

  1469. and rejoice

  1470. that by grace

  1471. through faith

  1472. you have

  1473. been brought

  1474. into one

  1475. big,

  1476. messy,

  1477. happy family

  1478. called the

  1479. church.

  1480. Do you

  1481. love that

  1482. mess?

  1483. Do you

  1484. love the

  1485. church?

  1486. God does.

  1487. Those who

  1488. came through

  1489. last week's

  1490. membership class,

  1491. they read

  1492. through our

  1493. church covenant

  1494. line by line,

  1495. that's a list

  1496. of our

  1497. commitments that

  1498. we plan to

  1499. make to

  1500. one another

  1501. and the

  1502. very first

  1503. one on

  1504. the list,

  1505. you know

  1506. what it is?

  1507. We will

  1508. pursue

  1509. unity,

  1510. working and

  1511. praying for

  1512. the unity

  1513. of the

  1514. spirit in

  1515. the bond

  1516. of peace,

  1517. working and

  1518. praying for

  1519. the unity.

  1520. Are you?

  1521. Are you

  1522. committed

  1523. to pursue

  1524. unity?

  1525. Would you

  1526. commit now

  1527. not to make

  1528. mountains out

  1529. of mole

  1530. hills here?

  1531. Church,

  1532. would you

  1533. commit now

  1534. to not

  1535. divide over

  1536. little things,

  1537. to not

  1538. fight or

  1539. fuss over

  1540. minor things,

  1541. to not

  1542. obsess over

  1543. minor things?

  1544. Would you

  1545. commit now

  1546. to make

  1547. Christ in

  1548. the glory

  1549. of God

  1550. the center

  1551. of our

  1552. attention

  1553. together

  1554. as a

  1555. church?

  1556. Would you

  1557. just commit

  1558. to do

  1559. that?

  1560. Would you

  1561. make that

  1562. the priority

  1563. of your

  1564. heart as

  1565. an individual

  1566. as you

  1567. soak in

  1568. the word

  1569. of God

  1570. this week?

  1571. Would you

  1572. seek the

  1573. main things?

  1574. devote your

  1575. life to

  1576. Christ in

  1577. the gospel?

  1578. And would

  1579. we commit

  1580. as a church

  1581. family to

  1582. obey the

  1583. word of

  1584. God?

  1585. There's

  1586. parts that

  1587. are easy,

  1588. there's maybe

  1589. a few of

  1590. those,

  1591. and those

  1592. that are

  1593. harder to

  1594. swallow.

  1595. Would we

  1596. submit

  1597. ourselves to

  1598. his word

  1599. for the

  1600. sake of

  1601. his glory

  1602. and the

  1603. good of

  1604. the church?

  1605. Our

  1606. great physician

  1607. heals the

  1608. sick,

  1609. church,

  1610. and the

  1611. body of

  1612. Christ,

  1613. despite our

  1614. flaws,

  1615. despite our

  1616. weakness,

  1617. will one

  1618. day be

  1619. radiant.

  1620. Let's pursue

  1621. that with

  1622. eagerness.

  1623. Amen?

  1624. Let's pray.

  1625. Father God,

  1626. we thank you

  1627. for your

  1628. word,

  1629. and we

  1630. pray that

  1631. what was

  1632. good and

  1633. true and

  1634. helpful of

  1635. any that I

  1636. just said

  1637. would stick

  1638. and if

  1639. there was

  1640. any untruth,

  1641. anything

  1642. unhelpful,

  1643. would it

  1644. fall out

  1645. of our

  1646. ears and

  1647. hit the

  1648. ground and

  1649. be forgotten?

  1650. Lord,

  1651. we ask that

  1652. you would be

  1653. made much

  1654. of here

  1655. among us.

  1656. Lord,

  1657. we ask that

  1658. we would be

  1659. a unified

  1660. body,

  1661. unified in

  1662. the gospel

  1663. of Christ.

  1664. Keep that

  1665. at the center

  1666. of our hearts

  1667. and of our

  1668. lives.

  1669. We love you.

  1670. We pray this

  1671. in Jesus'

  1672. name.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. Amen.

  1676. Amen.

  1677. Amen.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Amen.

  1683. Amen.

  1684. Amen.

  1685. Amen.

  1686. Amen.

  1687. Amen.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. Amen.

  1690. Amen.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. Absolutely.

  1698. Amen.

  1699. Amen.

  1700. Amen.

  1701. Amen.

  1702. Amen.

  1703. Amen.

  1704. Amen.

  1705. Amen.

  1706. Amen.

  1707. Amen.

  1708. Amen.

  1709. Amen.

  1710. Amen.

  1711. Amen.

  1712. Amen.

  1713. Amen.
