  1. And ordinarily what we do is we work our way through books of the Bible.

  2. So we just finished up walking through the book of Titus together.

  3. Last week, if you remember, we spent nine weeks together walking through the book of Titus,

  4. passage by passage by passage.

  5. And if you are wondering how long is it going to take us to work our way through 66 chapters of Isaiah,

  6. I have good news for you.

  7. Don't fear.

  8. We're not going from chapter 1 all the way through to chapter 66.

  9. We're just going to focus in on one chapter.

  10. For six weeks, we're going to be spending our time in chapter 55 of Isaiah,

  11. this one beautiful chapter in this Old Testament prophecy, Isaiah chapter 55.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  12. So if you would, go ahead and open up your Bibles to Isaiah chapter 55.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  13. And we're going to look at verses 1 through 3 this morning.

  14. If you're using the pew Bibles there in front of you, if you don't have your own Bible,

  15. you can find that on page 576 of the pew Bibles there in front of you.

  16. Either way, you'll want to have a Bible open because that's what I'm going to be reading and preaching from.

  17. And I would like for your eyes to be there on God's word.

  18. Isaiah 55 verses 1 through 3.

    Isaiah 55:1–3

  19. Follow along with me as I read.

  20. Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters.

  21. And he who has no money, come, buy and eat.

  22. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

  23. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,

  24. and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

  25. Listen diligently to me and eat what is good,

  26. and delight yourselves in rich food.

  27. Incline your ear and come to me.

  28. Hear that your soul may live.

  29. Let's pray once more.

  30. God, this invitation is beyond our greatest imagination.

  31. Father, that we would be invited to come and to delight ourselves in you and be satisfied.

  32. I pray, Father, that as this word is opened and preached,

  33. even now, God, would you give us appetite for you and your glory.

  34. We pray this in Christ's name.

  35. Amen.

  36. One of my favorite movies growing up was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

  37. And it's amazing how when you look back on these themes of certain movies from a Christian perspective,

  38. how much they rob, how much they steal from the story, the gospel.

  39. You remember the story?

  40. Charlie Bucket is a poor boy who lives on the outskirts of town

  41. with about 100 of his family members who apparently all share one bed for some reason.

  42. They're just dirt poor.

  43. And every day on the way to and from school,

  44. Charlie Bucket passes by Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

  45. This ginormous, mysterious chocolate factory has been closed down to the public.

  46. Nobody knows exactly what is going on in there.

  47. Until one day, Willy Wonka decided to run a contest.

  48. And, of course, as you know, he hid five golden tickets,

  49. tucked them away inside the candy wrappers of the chocolate bars.

  50. And whoever bought the right bar, whoever got the golden ticket,

  51. would be welcome.

  52. They could come join him in his chocolate factory,

  53. not only for a guided tour of the factory by Mr. Wonka himself,

  54. but they would also receive a lifetime supply of Willy Wonka chocolate products.

  55. As every kid's dream, right?

  56. A lifetime supply, full access to feast on whatever candy you want,

  57. whenever you wanted, brought to you by the candy maker himself.

  58. Well, what they didn't know was that Wonka was not just giving away chocolate.

  59. He had planned, secretly, he had planned to give away the whole factory to the right child,

  60. including his prized possession.

  61. You remember what it was?

  62. The everlasting gobstopper.

  63. As this one piece of candy that would last forever,

  64. never lose its taste, never lose its flavor,

  65. it would change flavors, change color, never lose its luster.

  66. It was always satisfying.

  67. And you can imagine how for a poor boy like Charlie,

  68. something like this was almost unimaginable.

  69. While other children bought up as many chocolate bars as they could find,

  70. poor Charlie buckets couldn't afford much,

  71. he'd be lucky just to get his hands on one.

  72. And you know the story, he miraculously found a piece of money in a snowbank,

  73. ran to the store, bought a chocolate bar, and rips it open,

  74. and there it is, the last golden ticket.

  75. It's his invitation to the chocolate factory.

  76. And this was his access, his invitation to a world of never-ending delight

  77. in this magical world of chocolate and mystery.

  78. A poor, desperate boy is invited to everlasting joy beyond his wildest dreams.

  79. This is the gospel according to Wonka.

  80. Well, as we come to Isaiah chapter 55 this morning,

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  81. we see the gospel according to Isaiah.

  82. This book is an Old Testament prophecy.

  83. It was written to Old Testament Israel while they were in exile.

  84. It was written about 700 years before Jesus Christ ever stepped foot on earth.

  85. But did you know it's commonly referred to as the fifth gospel?

  86. The fifth gospel.

  87. There's Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and all the way back here is Isaiah.

  88. In fact, if you only read your New Testament,

  89. never even opened up your Old Testament, which I don't recommend that you do,

  90. if you ignored your Old Testament entirely, only read your New Testament,

  91. you would still be pretty familiar with the book of Isaiah.

  92. And depending on who you ask and how you add it up,

  93. some say that out of the New Testament's 260 chapters,

  94. over 90% contain some reference to this fifth gospel,

  95. some allusion, some reference, some direct quote from the book of Isaiah.

  96. Our chapter this morning, chapter 55 of the book of Isaiah,

  97. our chapter that we'll be studying for the next several weeks,

  98. is towards the end of a section of scripture

  99. that is just overflowing with the message of the gospel.

  100. Chapter 53, you might know chapter 53 of Isaiah.

  101. It's one of the most popular, well-known passages in the Old Testament.

  102. Chapter 53 showed the suffering servant,

  103. dying in the place of sinners,

  104. bearing the sins of many.

  105. Chapter 4 portrayed a renewed creation,

  106. with renewed joy, renewed relationship with God,

  107. on the basis of that servant's work.

  108. And now chapter 55 is an invitation to come.

  109. It's an invitation to come and to feast.

  110. It's an invitation to enter into true and lasting satisfaction for your soul.

  111. So this morning, we begin our study in Isaiah 55,

  112. with this invitation to come and feast.

  113. And what we'll see this morning is three parts of the gospel according to Isaiah.

  114. Three parts of the gospel according to Isaiah.

  115. If you're taking notes, I encourage you to do so,

  116. and help you follow along.

  117. Three parts of the gospel according to Isaiah.

  118. Isaiah, we are needy,

  119. we are invited,

  120. and God alone can satisfy forever.

  121. I'll say that again.

  122. We are needy,

  123. we are invited,

  124. and God alone can satisfy forever.

  125. Well, clearly this chapter is an invitation to a feast.

  126. Fresh water,

  127. fresh milk,

  128. wine,

  129. and bread,

  130. rich food,

  131. a satisfying food,

  132. as much as you can handle.

  133. But there's a prerequisite there,

  134. isn't there?

  135. And there's a requirement here.

  136. In order to come and eat,

  137. you must be hungry.

  138. In order to come drink,

  139. you must be thirsty.

  140. He says,

  141. in order to buy a ticket,

  142. guess what?

  143. You must be broke.

  144. You must be poor.

  145. You must be needy.

  146. Look there to verse 1 with me.

  147. He says,

  148. Come,

  149. everyone who thirsts,

  150. come to the waters.

  151. And he who has no money,

  152. come buy and eat.

  153. Come buy wine and milk,

  154. without money,

  155. and without price.

  156. Price.

  157. Now this is an invitation to the world's greatest feast.

  158. And when we hear that,

  159. our ears,

  160. our mind,

  161. immediately goes to cost.

  162. How much does it cost?

  163. What's the price of admission?

  164. Or at the very least,

  165. what can I bring to the table?

  166. Can I bring something to contribute?

  167. But we have to see here in verse 1,

  168. a prerequisite of us coming to this feast

  169. is that we bring nothing with us.

  170. In fact,

  171. we couldn't afford it if we tried.

  172. Church,

  173. this is the bad news

  174. that must come before the good news

  175. of the gospel.

  176. This is what the gospel tells us.

  177. It tells us that we are,

  178. in and of ourselves,

  179. every one of us,

  180. apart from the grace of God,

  181. spiritually broke.

  182. We are bankrupt.

  183. We are incapable of bringing anything good to the table.

  184. We have nothing to offer.

  185. And Ephesians tells us,

  186. Paul tells us in Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  187. before God saved us in Christ,

  188. we were dead in our trespasses and sins

  189. in which we once walked.

  190. Dead in our trespasses and sins.

  191. Dead men don't eat.

  192. Dead men don't cook.

  193. Dead men don't bring anything to the table.

  194. They are dead.

  195. We have to understand this

  196. before we get too far into this chapter

  197. that he's making the point

  198. we cannot buy our way.

  199. We cannot earn our way.

  200. We cannot work our way into this feast.

  201. And that is exactly the point.

  202. This feast is not for those

  203. who are well-fed and rich.

  204. It's not for those

  205. who are satisfied already.

  206. It is for those

  207. who realize by the grace of God

  208. that they are poor and needy.

  209. We don't like to think of ourselves this way.

  210. Do we?

  211. We like to think of ourselves

  212. as capable,

  213. as worthy,

  214. as respectable,

  215. not needy.

  216. But those put together,

  217. well-resourced, well-fed people,

  218. it's clear they cannot come.

  219. They do not meet the qualifications.

  220. The fact that they think they are qualified

  221. makes them, in fact,

  222. unqualified to come.

  223. The Bible is clear.

  224. It does not matter

  225. how materially rich you are,

  226. how well-respected,

  227. how prosperous you are.

  228. Spiritually speaking,

  229. every one of us is broke.

  230. And it is broken,

  231. poor,

  232. desperately needy people

  233. that Jesus came to save.

  234. Amen?

  235. Amen?

  236. Amen.

  237. This is what drove the Pharisees crazy,

  238. isn't it?

  239. The Pharisees,

  240. you might remember,

  241. they were the religious elite

  242. in Jesus' day.

  243. They were the teachers of the law.

  244. They were masters of the word of God.

  245. They were well-respected,

  246. and they made sure

  247. that they were well-respected.

  248. And they could not stand

  249. that when Jesus came,

  250. he didn't really care too much

  251. for their resumes.

  252. He was not impressed

  253. by their knowledge.

  254. Instead, what Jesus did

  255. was he went out to the fringes.

  256. He went out to the poor

  257. and to the marginalized.

  258. He went to the rejected.

  259. He went to the needy.

  260. He spent his time with them.

  261. And so he says things

  262. like what Pete read for us earlier.

  263. He says things like,

  264. come to me,

  265. all who labor

  266. and are heavy laden,

  267. and I will give you rest.

  268. That sounds an awful lot

  269. like Isaiah 55, doesn't it?

  270. Those who are tired,

  271. those who are weary,

  272. those who are weak,

  273. those who are needy,

  274. come to me.

  275. Those who are thirsty,

  276. come to me.

  277. Those who are hungry,

  278. come to me.

  279. Those who are poor,

  280. come to me.

  281. He says things like,

  282. blessed are the poor in spirit,

  283. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  284. Blessed are the meek,

  285. for they shall inherit the earth.

  286. Blessed are those

  287. who hunger and thirst

  288. for righteousness,

  289. for they shall be what?

  290. Satisfied.

  291. He doesn't say,

  292. blessed are those

  293. who have it all together already.

  294. Blessed are those

  295. who are full of themselves.

  296. Blessed are those

  297. who don't need anything.

  298. This bothered the Pharisees.

  299. Because they were blind

  300. to their own spiritual poverty.

  301. And it really bothered them

  302. when Jesus started spending

  303. so much time with sinners.

  304. I mean, how could he do this?

  305. How could he go

  306. and spend time with them?

  307. You may remember the story

  308. of when Jesus met

  309. a tax collector named Levi

  310. sitting at his tax booth.

  311. Now there's a lot in the Bible

  312. that doesn't exactly correlate

  313. with our day and our time,

  314. but one thing that hasn't changed

  315. is people back then

  316. hated paying taxes

  317. as much as people now

  318. hate paying taxes.

  319. Levi was a tax collector.

  320. People hated tax collectors.

  321. These men would come

  322. take your money

  323. and often they would help themselves

  324. to a little bit extra,

  325. a little bit off the top,

  326. so they would be rich

  327. and they made sure

  328. everybody else

  329. was not as rich as them.

  330. They were not

  331. well-received people.

  332. And so when Jesus came

  333. to the tax collector Levi

  334. in Luke chapter 5,

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  335. this righteous teacher

  336. and this sinful thief,

  337. and Jesus looked at him

  338. and simply said,

  339. come follow me.

  340. What did Levi do?

  341. He left everything

  342. and followed him.

  343. The Pharisees didn't like this.

  344. But apparently Levi went

  345. and told all his friends

  346. because Luke 5 29,

  347. it says,

  348. Levi made him a great feast

  349. in his house

  350. and there was a large company

  351. of tax collectors

  352. and others

  353. reclining at table

  354. with them.

  355. And the Pharisees

  356. and their scribes

  357. grumbled at his disciples

  358. saying,

  359. why do you eat and drink

  360. with tax collectors

  361. and sinners?

  362. And Jesus answered them,

  363. hear this,

  364. those who are well

  365. have no need

  366. of a physician,

  367. but those who are sick

  368. I have not come

  369. to call the righteous

  370. but sinners

  371. to repentance.

  372. I have not come

  373. to call the righteous

  374. but sinners

  375. to repentance.

  376. Why do you eat

  377. with tax collectors

  378. and sinners?

  379. Why would Jesus

  380. come into the home

  381. of a sinful man

  382. and associate

  383. with his rabble

  384. of sinful people?

  385. Why would he feast

  386. with sinners?

  387. If only the Pharisees

  388. had studied Isaiah 55,

  389. a little more closely,

  390. they might have understood

  391. they are the only ones

  392. invited.

  393. Jesus did not come

  394. to call the righteous

  395. but sinners

  396. to repentance.

  397. sins.

  398. Now of course,

  399. the Pharisees

  400. were just as sinful

  401. as anybody else.

  402. They were plenty sinful

  403. just like us.

  404. The only difference

  405. between them

  406. and these other sinners

  407. was that they

  408. didn't think so.

  409. They were blinded

  410. to their sin.

  411. They didn't realize

  412. their thirst.

  413. They didn't realize

  414. their hunger.

  415. They didn't realize

  416. their poverty.

  417. And so Jesus says,

  418. before you come

  419. and feast with me,

  420. God says,

  421. before you come

  422. and feast on me,

  423. you must recognize

  424. your need.

  425. You are a sinner

  426. in great need

  427. of a Savior.

  428. One more example

  429. from the book of Luke.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  430. Chapter 18.

  431. Chapter 18.

  432. The parable of

  433. the Pharisee

  434. and the tax collector.

  435. Luke says in verse 9,

  436. chapter 18.

  437. Jesus told this parable

  438. to some who trusted

  439. in themselves

  440. that they were righteous

  441. and treated other people

  442. with contempt.

  443. Okay, so you see

  444. the audience here.

  445. And he goes on

  446. to tell this parable

  447. of two men

  448. going to the temple

  449. to pray.

  450. One of them

  451. was a Pharisee,

  452. this religious elite.

  453. The other was

  454. a tax collector,

  455. a clear sinner.

  456. And it says,

  457. the Pharisee

  458. prayed like this,

  459. God, I thank you

  460. that I am not

  461. like other men.

  462. extortioners,

  463. unjust,

  464. adulterers,

  465. even like this

  466. tax collector.

  467. And he pulls out

  468. his resume

  469. for God to read.

  470. He says,

  471. I fast twice a week.

  472. I give tithes

  473. of all that I get.

  474. God,

  475. aren't I just awesome?

  476. But the tax collector,

  477. standing far off,

  478. would not even

  479. lift up his eyes

  480. to heaven,

  481. but beat his breast,

  482. saying,

  483. God,

  484. be merciful to me,

  485. a sinner.

  486. Now here's

  487. the most striking

  488. part of this story.

  489. Jesus says

  490. in verse 14,

  491. I tell you,

  492. this man,

  493. this man,

  494. the sinner,

  495. the tax collector,

  496. this man,

  497. went down

  498. to his house

  499. justified

  500. rather than the other.

  501. For everyone

  502. who exalts himself

  503. will be humbled,

  504. but the one

  505. who humbles himself

  506. will be exalted.

  507. Church,

  508. which one

  509. are we more like?

  510. Before we step foot

  511. into this great

  512. feast of God

  513. portrayed in Isaiah 55,

  514. our hearts

  515. must be humbled.

  516. We must recognize

  517. our need

  518. and our poverty.

  519. Do you see yourself

  520. as righteous,

  521. as more deserving

  522. of the grace of God

  523. than anybody else,

  524. more deserving

  525. of the presence of God

  526. than anybody else?

  527. The bad news

  528. of the gospel

  529. is we are

  530. desperately sinful.

  531. We bring nothing

  532. good to the table.

  533. Sinful beyond

  534. our wildest imagination,

  535. but the good news

  536. of the gospel

  537. is that that is

  538. exactly who

  539. Christ came to save.

  540. which is the second

  541. part of the gospel

  542. according to Isaiah

  543. this morning.

  544. The second part

  545. of the gospel

  546. according to Isaiah.

  547. We are invited.

  548. We are invited.

  549. The good news

  550. of the gospel

  551. for sinners

  552. like us

  553. is that we

  554. are invited

  555. to come.

  556. Four times

  557. in these three verses

  558. we hear this

  559. gospel invitation,

  560. don't we?

  561. It says,

  562. come everyone

  563. who thirsts,

  564. come to the waters.

  565. He who has no money,

  566. come buy and eat.

  567. And down in verse 3

  568. he says,

  569. incline your ear

  570. and come to me.

  571. Hear that your soul

  572. may live.

  573. Because,

  574. chapter 53,

  575. because he has

  576. borne our griefs

  577. and carried our sorrows.

  578. Because he was

  579. pierced for our

  580. transgressions

  581. and crushed

  582. for our iniquities.

  583. Because of the work

  584. of Christ

  585. on the cross,

  586. we are invited

  587. to come

  588. and live.

  589. This is what we call

  590. the general call

  591. of the gospel.

  592. The general call

  593. of the gospel.

  594. The gospel message

  595. is a promise

  596. of eternal life.

  597. It's a promise

  598. of forgiveness

  599. of sins,

  600. everlasting joy

  601. in the presence

  602. of God

  603. on the basis

  604. of the work

  605. of Christ,

  606. his life,

  607. his death,

  608. his resurrection

  609. received by grace

  610. through faith.

  611. It costs you nothing

  612. because he has already

  613. paid the price

  614. of admission.

  615. We simply must receive

  616. it by faith

  617. as a gift

  618. by turning from our sin,

  619. by trusting in

  620. our Savior.

  621. That's the gospel.

  622. That's the gospel message.

  623. And that invitation

  624. to come to the Father

  625. is broadly cast out,

  626. generally, broadly,

  627. into the ears

  628. of any who would hear it.

  629. Come.

  630. Come to Christ.

  631. Turn from your sin

  632. and live.

  633. Turn from your sin.

  634. Trust in your Savior.

  635. Come.

  636. Have your sins forgiven.

  637. Come.

  638. Listen that your soul

  639. may live.

  640. But not everybody comes,

  641. do they?

  642. Only those who are

  643. effectively called

  644. will, in fact,

  645. come to the Lord.

  646. And that effectual call

  647. where through the preaching

  648. of the gospel,

  649. through the extending

  650. broadly of this invitation,

  651. through our personal evangelism,

  652. sinners hear the good news

  653. of the gospel

  654. and are spiritually reborn again

  655. of His Spirit.

  656. Regenerated.

  657. Born again.

  658. It is extended to all,

  659. but sadly,

  660. it is not received by all.

  661. And that's where

  662. our statement of faith,

  663. we confess,

  664. concerning the freeness

  665. of salvation.

  666. It reads like this.

  667. We believe that salvation

  668. is offered freely

  669. to all in the gospel

  670. and that it is the immediate

  671. duty of all

  672. to accept the gospel

  673. by a humble,

  674. repentant,

  675. and obedient faith.

  676. Hear this.

  677. There is nothing

  678. that prevents

  679. the salvation

  680. of the greatest sinner

  681. on earth

  682. but His own depravity

  683. and voluntary rejection

  684. of the gospel

  685. which results

  686. in just condemnation.

  687. Jesus told another parable

  688. in Matthew chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  689. of a rich king

  690. who wanted to throw

  691. a banquet.

  692. He wanted to throw

  693. a wedding feast

  694. for his son.

  695. And so he sent out

  696. servants out

  697. into the streets

  698. to call those

  699. who were invited

  700. to come to the feast.

  701. But they would not come.

  702. So he sent more servants

  703. out into the streets

  704. and sent out the call,

  705. the invitation,

  706. come,

  707. come celebrate,

  708. come enjoy the food,

  709. come enjoy the wine.

  710. My son is getting married,

  711. everything's ready,

  712. come on,

  713. come to the feast.

  714. But again,

  715. they paid

  716. no attention

  717. and went off

  718. about their business.

  719. They were too busy

  720. to come.

  721. In fact,

  722. some were so bothered

  723. by hearing this invitation

  724. over and over

  725. and over again

  726. that they treated

  727. the servants shamefully

  728. and killed them.

  729. So he says,

  730. the king executed judgment.

  731. He says,

  732. he destroyed those murderers

  733. and burned their city.

  734. And then he sent

  735. his servants again.

  736. Go therefore

  737. into the roads

  738. and invite

  739. to the wedding feast

  740. as many as you can find.

  741. And the servants

  742. went out into the road

  743. and gathered all they could,

  744. both good and bad,

  745. so that the wedding hall

  746. was filled with guests.

  747. Here's the sad reality,

  748. church.

  749. You can hear

  750. the general call

  751. of the gospel

  752. time after time

  753. after time

  754. after time.

  755. You can know it

  756. inside and out.

  757. You can come to church

  758. every week

  759. from the time you're one

  760. to the time you're 101

  761. and never actually come.

  762. to Christ.

  763. You must hear

  764. the good news

  765. in order to believe it,

  766. but only hearing

  767. this general call

  768. of the gospel

  769. will not save you.

  770. You must come

  771. to Christ.

  772. So Jesus concludes

  773. this parable

  774. by saying,

  775. many are called

  776. generally,

  777. but few

  778. are chosen

  779. effectively.

  780. You must

  781. come.

  782. How do we do that?

  783. How do we

  784. come

  785. and feast,

  786. accept this invitation

  787. to come

  788. and delight ourselves

  789. in the Lord?

  790. He tells us,

  791. doesn't He?

  792. Isaiah.

  793. In Isaiah 55.

  794. It's by listening

  795. and trusting

  796. the Word of God.

  797. By listening

  798. and trusting

  799. the Word of God.

  800. It's not just

  801. to hear,

  802. it's to listen.

  803. Verse 2,

  804. Isaiah 55,

    Isaiah 55:2

  805. verse 2.

  806. He says,

  807. listen diligently

  808. to me

  809. and eat what is good.

  810. Verse 3,

  811. incline your ear

  812. and come to me

  813. here

  814. that your soul

  815. may live.

  816. So how do we

  817. come to the Lord?

  818. It's by listening

  819. diligently

  820. to the Word of God.

  821. How do we come

  822. into the presence

  823. of God?

  824. How do we

  825. enter into His presence

  826. so that we might

  827. satisfy our soul?

  828. It is by feasting

  829. on the Word

  830. of God.

  831. What does Jesus say?

  832. Man does not live

  833. by bread alone

  834. but by every what?

  835. Word.

  836. From the mouth

  837. of God.

  838. Are any of you

  839. spiritually dry?

  840. Are any of you

  841. spiritually hungry?

  842. You're invited

  843. to come

  844. and to feast

  845. on the Word of God.

  846. Are you weary?

  847. Are you thirsty?

  848. Are you poor?

  849. Are you needy?

  850. Come and hear God speak.

  851. Come that your soul

  852. might live.

  853. Do you want to know

  854. God more?

  855. Come and listen

  856. to His Word.

  857. Do you want to grow

  858. as a disciple of Christ?

  859. Do you want to grow

  860. in your love for God

  861. as His child?

  862. Open up the book

  863. and read.

  864. But don't just hear it.

  865. Church,

  866. listen

  867. diligently.

  868. Listen

  869. to your Father

  870. speak

  871. life-giving

  872. words.

  873. faith.

  874. And then

  875. go out into the streets

  876. and invite others

  877. to come feast

  878. with us.

  879. Faith comes through

  880. hearing

  881. and hearing

  882. through the Word

  883. of God.

  884. What does Paul

  885. say in Romans?

  886. How then

  887. will they call

  888. on Him

  889. in whom

  890. they have not

  891. believed?

  892. How are they

  893. to believe

  894. in Him

  895. of whom

  896. they have never

  897. heard?

  898. And how are they

  899. to hear

  900. without someone

  901. preaching?

  902. And how are they

  903. to preach

  904. unless they

  905. are sent?

  906. Church,

  907. we have been

  908. sent.

  909. Jesus Christ

  910. commanded us,

  911. go therefore

  912. and make disciples

  913. of all nations,

  914. baptizing them

  915. in the name

  916. of the Father

  917. and the Son

  918. and the Holy Spirit,

  919. teaching them

  920. to observe

  921. everything I have

  922. commanded you

  923. and lo,

  924. I am with you

  925. always,

  926. even to the

  927. uttermost ends

  928. of the earth.

  929. We have been

  930. commissioned

  931. to go out

  932. into the streets

  933. as His servants

  934. and invite

  935. as many as we

  936. could find

  937. to come feast

  938. their souls

  939. on the Word

  940. of God.

  941. Our privilege,

  942. church,

  943. as God's ambassadors

  944. is to be the

  945. mouthpiece

  946. of this invitation.

  947. This invitation

  948. in Isaiah 55.

  949. We don't know

  950. who the Lord

  951. will call

  952. effectively

  953. unto salvation,

  954. but we do know

  955. how they will

  956. come.

  957. It's through

  958. the proclamation

  959. of the gospel.

  960. It is through

  961. the church

  962. effectively

  963. going out

  964. and obeying

  965. this great commission.

  966. We have been

  967. entrusted

  968. as servants

  969. of the King

  970. with the task

  971. to go into

  972. the streets

  973. and invite them

  974. to come.

  975. Everyone who thirsts,

  976. everyone who hungers,

  977. everyone who's poor,

  978. everyone who's needy,

  979. come to the waters

  980. and drink.

  981. One thing

  982. that we keep

  983. talking about

  984. is personal evangelism.

  985. Have you heard me

  986. mention that before?

  987. One area

  988. that we want

  989. to see this group

  990. of people,

  991. this church,

  992. grow in

  993. in the years to come

  994. is personal evangelism.

  995. Our strategy

  996. for reaching

  997. the lost

  998. in all in all,

  999. for reaching

  1000. our community,

  1001. for ministering

  1002. to our community,

  1003. our strategy

  1004. for the growth

  1005. of this church,

  1006. our strategy

  1007. for the growth

  1008. of every one

  1009. of you

  1010. is that we

  1011. would share

  1012. the gospel,

  1013. that we would

  1014. be equipped

  1015. personally,

  1016. every one of us

  1017. to share

  1018. the good news

  1019. of the gospel.

  1020. So who do you

  1021. know

  1022. that needs

  1023. to be invited

  1024. to come?

  1025. Who do you

  1026. know

  1027. that is

  1028. spiritually

  1029. thirsty?

  1030. And maybe

  1031. that's you

  1032. this morning.

  1033. And maybe

  1034. you've realized

  1035. now by the grace

  1036. of God

  1037. you've heard

  1038. this invitation,

  1039. you've heard

  1040. this message

  1041. time and time

  1042. again,

  1043. you recognize

  1044. your need

  1045. but you've

  1046. never actually

  1047. come.

  1048. Friend,

  1049. you're invited

  1050. now to come

  1051. and to listen

  1052. and to put

  1053. your trust

  1054. in Christ.

  1055. but what's

  1056. the point?

  1057. What's so

  1058. great about

  1059. this feast

  1060. that we

  1061. come back

  1062. to it time

  1063. and time

  1064. again?

  1065. Friend,

  1066. the gospel

  1067. invites you

  1068. not only

  1069. to forgiveness

  1070. which is

  1071. wonderful,

  1072. not only

  1073. to peace

  1074. with God

  1075. which is

  1076. wonderful,

  1077. not only

  1078. to escape

  1079. from judgment

  1080. and condemnation

  1081. and hell,

  1082. the good

  1083. news of

  1084. the gospel

  1085. is that

  1086. we are

  1087. invited

  1088. to be

  1089. satisfied

  1090. in God

  1091. forever.

  1092. This is

  1093. the third

  1094. part

  1095. of the gospel

  1096. according

  1097. to Isaiah.

  1098. Third,

  1099. God

  1100. alone

  1101. will satisfy.

  1102. God

  1103. alone

  1104. will satisfy.

  1105. If we

  1106. don't believe

  1107. this,

  1108. we will

  1109. never

  1110. come.

  1111. If we

  1112. don't

  1113. genuinely

  1114. believe

  1115. that God

  1116. alone

  1117. can satisfy

  1118. the needs

  1119. of our

  1120. soul,

  1121. we will

  1122. never

  1123. come

  1124. to the

  1125. Father.

  1126. Do you

  1127. know the

  1128. reason why

  1129. so many

  1130. don't

  1131. come?

  1132. When we

  1133. look at

  1134. what God

  1135. is offering

  1136. in this

  1137. feast,

  1138. this water

  1139. that gives

  1140. life,

  1141. this milk

  1142. that nourishes

  1143. and gives

  1144. strength,

  1145. this wine

  1146. that gives

  1147. joy,

  1148. bread that

  1149. satisfies our

  1150. hunger and

  1151. nourishes our

  1152. soul,

  1153. why would

  1154. anybody not

  1155. come?

  1156. He tells us

  1157. in verse 2,

  1158. Isaiah 55

    Isaiah 55:2

  1159. verse 2,

  1160. it's because

  1161. verse 2,

  1162. we spend

  1163. our money

  1164. for that

  1165. which is

  1166. not bread

  1167. and we

  1168. labor for

  1169. that which

  1170. does not

  1171. satisfy.

  1172. In other

  1173. words,

  1174. we don't

  1175. come to

  1176. the feast

  1177. because we

  1178. have filled

  1179. ourselves

  1180. already,

  1181. or so we

  1182. think,

  1183. we're not

  1184. hungry because

  1185. we've been

  1186. snacking on

  1187. empty calories

  1188. no less.

  1189. This is a

  1190. sad depiction

  1191. of our

  1192. pursuit of

  1193. pleasure,

  1194. our pursuit

  1195. of joy,

  1196. our pursuit

  1197. of satisfaction

  1198. in anything

  1199. other than

  1200. God

  1201. himself.

  1202. Isaiah

  1203. tells us

  1204. we are

  1205. desperately

  1206. poor,

  1207. yet we

  1208. continue to

  1209. spend

  1210. ourselves

  1211. for that

  1212. which is

  1213. not bread

  1214. and that

  1215. which will

  1216. not

  1217. satisfy.

  1218. Jeremiah

  1219. the prophet,

  1220. he had

  1221. something to

  1222. say about

  1223. this.

  1224. God spoke

  1225. through

  1226. Jeremiah

  1227. the prophet

  1228. to his

  1229. people in

  1230. Israel in

  1231. exile again

  1232. and he

  1233. says in

  1234. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 2:13

  1235. chapter 2

  1236. verse 13,

  1237. he says

  1238. this,

  1239. my people

  1240. have committed

  1241. two evils.

  1242. They have

  1243. forsaken me,

  1244. the fountain

  1245. of living

  1246. waters,

  1247. and they

  1248. have hewed

  1249. out cisterns

  1250. for themselves,

  1251. broken cisterns

  1252. that can hold

  1253. no water.

  1254. You see

  1255. these two

  1256. evils,

  1257. they have

  1258. forsaken me,

  1259. the fountain

  1260. of living

  1261. waters,

  1262. the all

  1263. satisfying

  1264. fountain of

  1265. living waters,

  1266. this fountain

  1267. of life

  1268. and joy,

  1269. but not

  1270. only that,

  1271. they have

  1272. also just

  1273. tried to

  1274. create their

  1275. own cisterns

  1276. and they're

  1277. broken cisterns

  1278. that can hold

  1279. no water

  1280. and of course

  1281. all of us

  1282. are guilty

  1283. of this

  1284. type of

  1285. idolatry.

  1286. We turn

  1287. from the

  1288. fountain of

  1289. life and

  1290. joy and

  1291. peace and

  1292. satisfaction and

  1293. we try to

  1294. find it

  1295. ourselves in

  1296. other things.

  1297. That's what

  1298. idolatry is.

  1299. We try to

  1300. find that

  1301. satisfaction in

  1302. money,

  1303. in success,

  1304. in a

  1305. relationship,

  1306. in sex,

  1307. in a child,

  1308. in respect.

  1309. Every one of

  1310. us, whether we

  1311. realize it or

  1312. not, we

  1313. worship idols.

  1314. Idols are

  1315. anything that

  1316. we turn to

  1317. for the

  1318. satisfaction that

  1319. only God

  1320. can provide.

  1321. Jeremiah says

  1322. they are

  1323. broken

  1324. cisterns.

  1325. They can't

  1326. hold water

  1327. and yet we

  1328. form them

  1329. and we

  1330. trust them.

  1331. and we

  1332. turn to

  1333. them and

  1334. we rely on

  1335. them to

  1336. quench our

  1337. thirst but

  1338. they never

  1339. will.

  1340. Sadly, they

  1341. are broken.

  1342. Several weeks

  1343. ago, you

  1344. might remember

  1345. we talked

  1346. about the

  1347. lawsuit that

  1348. was filed

  1349. against Red

  1350. Bull.

  1351. You remember

  1352. that?

  1353. And their

  1354. slogan, it'll

  1355. give you

  1356. wings.

  1357. consumers

  1358. claimed it

  1359. was false

  1360. advertising.

  1361. They'd been

  1362. drinking Red

  1363. Bull for

  1364. years and

  1365. never once

  1366. had they

  1367. grown a

  1368. pair of

  1369. wings.

  1370. And they

  1371. won the

  1372. lawsuit, believe

  1373. it or not.

  1374. Well, in

  1375. 2016, there

  1376. was yet another

  1377. food-related

  1378. lawsuit.

  1379. This time, it

  1380. was against

  1381. company against

  1382. company, two

  1383. food companies.

  1384. Hungry

  1385. Man versus

  1386. Heinz.

  1387. Hungry

  1388. Man, the

  1389. frozen meal

  1390. company, it

  1391. had a

  1392. slogan.

  1393. Anybody

  1394. remember what

  1395. it was?

  1396. Satisfy your

  1397. craving.

  1398. Hungry

  1399. Man will

  1400. satisfy your

  1401. craving.

  1402. They had

  1403. trademarked it

  1404. and everything.

  1405. They were the

  1406. only frozen

  1407. food company

  1408. who could

  1409. say that

  1410. their frozen

  1411. meals would

  1412. satisfy your

  1413. craving.

  1414. But the

  1415. marketing geniuses

  1416. over at

  1417. Heinz got

  1418. together and

  1419. they came up

  1420. with Devour

  1421. Foods.

  1422. It was their

  1423. own frozen

  1424. food line and

  1425. they drafted

  1426. up their

  1427. own unique

  1428. slogan.

  1429. Devour

  1430. Foods will

  1431. satisfy your

  1432. cravings.

  1433. There's an

  1434. S.

  1435. It's plural.

  1436. More than

  1437. one.

  1438. There's an

  1439. S at the

  1440. end of it.

  1441. And of

  1442. course, the

  1443. good people

  1444. over at

  1445. Hungry

  1446. Man took

  1447. issue with

  1448. this because

  1449. they were

  1450. the only

  1451. ones who

  1452. could satisfy

  1453. your craving.

  1454. But Heinz

  1455. over here,

  1456. they said,

  1457. well, you

  1458. can satisfy

  1459. a craving,

  1460. but we

  1461. satisfy

  1462. cravings.

  1463. We can

  1464. do it all.

  1465. And if I

  1466. were bold

  1467. enough, I

  1468. would file a

  1469. lawsuit against

  1470. them both

  1471. because as we

  1472. all know,

  1473. frozen food

  1474. does not

  1475. satisfy your

  1476. cravings.

  1477. Whether one

  1478. or many,

  1479. not for long

  1480. at least.

  1481. You may be

  1482. satisfied for a

  1483. moment, you

  1484. heat it up,

  1485. you eat it,

  1486. your belly's

  1487. full, but

  1488. within a couple

  1489. hours, you're

  1490. hungry again,

  1491. it doesn't

  1492. last, and

  1493. even the best

  1494. meal of your

  1495. life, I know

  1496. Thanksgiving's

  1497. coming up.

  1498. We will

  1499. feast and

  1500. be satisfied

  1501. temporarily.

  1502. It doesn't

  1503. satisfy forever.

  1504. It's momentary,

  1505. it's temporary,

  1506. and Isaiah

  1507. and Jeremiah

  1508. show us that's

  1509. how it is with

  1510. our idols.

  1511. We believe the

  1512. advertisement

  1513. that this job,

  1514. this feeling,

  1515. this accomplishment,

  1516. this raise,

  1517. this child,

  1518. will satisfy

  1519. the needs

  1520. of my soul,

  1521. but once you

  1522. dig in and

  1523. consume it,

  1524. you get it,

  1525. you realize it

  1526. doesn't live up

  1527. to the hype,

  1528. and you're left

  1529. hungry again.

  1530. You have spent

  1531. your money on

  1532. not bread.

  1533. Why do you

  1534. spend your money

  1535. for that which

  1536. is not bread?

  1537. Why do you

  1538. labor for that

  1539. which does not

  1540. satisfy?

  1541. church,

  1542. God invites

  1543. us in

  1544. Isaiah 55

  1545. to listen

  1546. diligently

  1547. to me

  1548. and eat

  1549. what is

  1550. good.

  1551. Delight

  1552. yourselves

  1553. in rich

  1554. food.

  1555. Incline

  1556. your ear

  1557. and come

  1558. to me

  1559. here

  1560. that your

  1561. soul

  1562. may live.

  1563. Here's what

  1564. he's telling

  1565. us.

  1566. True

  1567. joy

  1568. and true

  1569. life

  1570. true

  1571. lasting

  1572. satisfaction

  1573. is found

  1574. in God

  1575. and God

  1576. alone.

  1577. He alone

  1578. can satisfy

  1579. the desires,

  1580. the cravings,

  1581. the need

  1582. of your soul,

  1583. and he has

  1584. no competitors.

  1585. This is what

  1586. we were made

  1587. for.

  1588. What is the

  1589. chief end

  1590. of man?

  1591. The chief end

  1592. of man

  1593. is to glorify

  1594. God

  1595. and enjoy

  1596. him forever.

  1597. This is what

  1598. we were made

  1599. for.

  1600. We were

  1601. created

  1602. to delight

  1603. ourselves

  1604. in God,

  1605. to be

  1606. satisfied

  1607. in him.

  1608. So every

  1609. desire that

  1610. we have

  1611. for love,

  1612. for joy,

  1613. for acceptance,

  1614. for pleasure,

  1615. every craving

  1616. for satisfaction

  1617. is ultimately

  1618. and only

  1619. fulfilled

  1620. in him.

  1621. And this

  1622. is what

  1623. Christ

  1624. came

  1625. to do.

  1626. We're told

  1627. in 1 Peter 3

    1 Peter 3:18

  1628. verse 18.

  1629. For Christ

  1630. also suffered

  1631. once for sins,

  1632. the righteous

  1633. for the unrighteous,

  1634. that he might

  1635. bring us

  1636. to God.

  1637. The best

  1638. part of the

  1639. gospel is

  1640. not forgiveness,

  1641. it's not

  1642. freedom from

  1643. sin,

  1644. it's not

  1645. freedom from

  1646. death or

  1647. disease or

  1648. suffering,

  1649. it's not even

  1650. that we might

  1651. be reunited

  1652. with our

  1653. lost loved

  1654. ones and

  1655. family members.

  1656. The best

  1657. part of the

  1658. gospel is

  1659. that we

  1660. get to

  1661. feast

  1662. forever

  1663. on the

  1664. goodness

  1665. of God.

  1666. And it

  1667. will take

  1668. all of

  1669. eternity

  1670. for us

  1671. to explore

  1672. the goodness

  1673. of God.

  1674. One commentator,

  1675. J. Alec Motier,

  1676. says this,

  1677. The Lord

  1678. himself is

  1679. the feast.

  1680. Just as

  1681. true food

  1682. restores the

  1683. body debilitated

  1684. by not bread,

  1685. so the food

  1686. of the Lord's

  1687. word,

  1688. brings the

  1689. whole person

  1690. to the

  1691. life that

  1692. is life

  1693. indeed.

  1694. Is your

  1695. soul hungry?

  1696. Do you

  1697. hunger and

  1698. thirst to

  1699. be satisfied

  1700. in God?

  1701. You are

  1702. invited to

  1703. come to

  1704. feast that

  1705. your soul

  1706. might live.

  1707. God

  1708. and

  1709. Jesus

  1710. told

  1711. another

  1712. parable

  1713. in

  1714. Luke

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  1715. chapter

  1716. 15.

  1717. You all

  1718. know it

  1719. as the

  1720. parable

  1721. of the

  1722. prodigal

  1723. son.

  1724. A man

  1725. had

  1726. two sons

  1727. of the

  1728. younger

  1729. dishonored

  1730. his father

  1731. by asking

  1732. for his

  1733. share of

  1734. the

  1735. inheritance

  1736. early.

  1737. While his

  1738. father was

  1739. still living,

  1740. he basically

  1741. said,

  1742. you're as

  1743. good as

  1744. dead to

  1745. me,

  1746. just give

  1747. me the

  1748. money,

  1749. because that's

  1750. all I

  1751. really want

  1752. anyways.

  1753. And the

  1754. father gave

  1755. it to

  1756. him.

  1757. And so

  1758. the son

  1759. went off

  1760. and lived

  1761. recklessly

  1762. and spent

  1763. all his

  1764. money on

  1765. things that

  1766. would not

  1767. satisfy.

  1768. And suddenly

  1769. there was a

  1770. famine in

  1771. the land,

  1772. and he

  1773. was hungry

  1774. and thirsty

  1775. and poor

  1776. and needy.

  1777. And so

  1778. he said,

  1779. I'll go back

  1780. to my father

  1781. and I'll ask

  1782. for forgiveness.

  1783. Maybe at least

  1784. he'll let me

  1785. be like one

  1786. of his servants

  1787. and I can get

  1788. a good meal,

  1789. I can work

  1790. at his house

  1791. and eat.

  1792. But when he

  1793. started on his

  1794. way back home,

  1795. the father saw

  1796. him from a

  1797. long way off.

  1798. And Luke

  1799. says he felt

  1800. compassion on

  1801. him.

  1802. And he ran

  1803. to him.

  1804. And he embraced

  1805. him.

  1806. And he kissed

  1807. him.

  1808. And he wouldn't

  1809. even let him

  1810. finish his

  1811. apology.

  1812. He ordered

  1813. that they bring

  1814. out the best

  1815. robe and put

  1816. it on his

  1817. back and a

  1818. ring for his

  1819. finger and

  1820. shoes for his

  1821. feet and to

  1822. kill the

  1823. fattened calf

  1824. and prepare it

  1825. so that they

  1826. could feast

  1827. and celebrate.

  1828. For this my

  1829. son was dead

  1830. and is alive

  1831. again.

  1832. He was lost

  1833. and is now

  1834. found.

  1835. Can you imagine

  1836. what a joy

  1837. that must have

  1838. been?

  1839. For the son

  1840. to come back

  1841. home having

  1842. nothing to offer

  1843. whatsoever,

  1844. broken and

  1845. humbled and

  1846. poor,

  1847. not just to come

  1848. back and enjoy

  1849. a feast,

  1850. not just to

  1851. enjoy rich

  1852. food and

  1853. drink wine

  1854. and to

  1855. celebrate,

  1856. but to be

  1857. restored to

  1858. his father

  1859. and to be

  1860. with him

  1861. and to be

  1862. embraced by

  1863. him and to

  1864. be welcomed

  1865. back home.

  1866. Friend,

  1867. that is the

  1868. call of

  1869. Isaiah 55.

  1870. Come ye

  1871. sinners,

  1872. poor and

  1873. needy,

  1874. weak and

  1875. wounded,

  1876. sick and

  1877. sore.

  1878. Jesus ready

  1879. stands to

  1880. save you

  1881. full of

  1882. pity,

  1883. love and

  1884. power.

  1885. Would you

  1886. come?

  1887. Would you

  1888. come?

  1889. Would you

  1890. come?

  1891. Let's pray.

  1892. Lord,

  1893. we thank you

  1894. for your

  1895. heart that's

  1896. displayed in

  1897. this passage

  1898. that you

  1899. would invite

  1900. sinners like

  1901. us to

  1902. come and

  1903. to be

  1904. satisfied in

  1905. you.

  1906. Nothing else

  1907. can satisfy

  1908. the needs

  1909. of our

  1910. soul,

  1911. but you

  1912. and you

  1913. alone.

  1914. We thank

  1915. you that

  1916. through the

  1917. work of

  1918. Christ you

  1919. have made

  1920. a way for

  1921. us to be

  1922. forgiven and

  1923. to be

  1924. restored to

  1925. our father.

  1926. We pray that

  1927. we would leave

  1928. this place

  1929. encouraged and

  1930. with the good

  1931. news of this

  1932. invitation quick

  1933. off of our

  1934. lips to any

  1935. who would

  1936. hear.

  1937. We pray this

  1938. in Jesus'

  1939. name.

  1940. Amen.

  1941. Amen.

  1942. Amen.

  1943. Amen.

  1944. Amen.

  1945. Amen.

  1946. Amen.

  1947. Amen.

  1948. Amen.

  1949. Amen.

  1950. Amen.

  1951. Amen.

  1952. Amen.

  1953. Amen.

  1954. Amen.

  1955. Amen.
