  1. Amen. Thank you, Treg.

  2. Let's open up our Bibles again to Isaiah chapter 55.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  3. Isaiah chapter 55. We started this chapter last week with this invitation to come and to feast on the goodness of God.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  4. It was this invitation that was extended to any who would listen and any who would trust in the Word of God.

  5. They could come and find true and lasting satisfaction for their souls.

  6. And this morning we see God make yet another promise here in verses 3 through 5.

  7. So let's open there now. Isaiah chapter 55. We're going to be in verses 3 through 5.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  8. And I know that the words will probably be behind me, but I encourage you to have a physical Bible in your lap open

  9. because we're going to be hopping around a couple different places.

  10. And I want your eyes there on God's Word.

  11. So Isaiah 55, 3 through 5. Follow with me this morning as I read.

  12. Incline your ear and come to me.

  13. Hear that your soul may live.

  14. And I will make with you an everlasting covenant.

  15. My steadfast, sure love for David.

  16. Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples.

  17. A leader and commander for the peoples.

  18. Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you.

  19. Because of the Lord your God and of the Holy One of Israel.

  20. For he has glorified you.

  21. Would you pray with me once more?

  22. Lord, this is your word.

  23. And we ask that you would speak now in power.

  24. As we open it up, as we seek your face in what you have said.

  25. God, our desire is to learn from you and be transformed by the power of your word.

  26. So we pray, would you do that now as we open up this passage of scripture.

  27. We pray this in Christ's name.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. But it is Sunday, November 13th.

  31. It's the Sunday after election day.

  32. And many of you, I know, went out to the polls Tuesday or sometime before Tuesday to cast your votes and appoint new leadership.

  33. And you did so generally on the basis of campaign promises.

  34. Regardless of how you voted, regardless of who you voted for, what it comes down to is you cast your vote on the premise that you could trust those names on the ballot to fulfill the promises that they made.

  35. What they would do given your vote.

  36. That you can trust their promises.

  37. And so each candidate on the ballot, they ran advertisements, they ran commercials, radio spots, TV appearances, text message assaults.

  38. Offering certain promises to you, the voter, should they be appointed to their desired office.

  39. And I may be cynical.

  40. And I don't think I'm presenting any new information to anybody here this morning.

  41. But history would show that some of those promises will indeed be kept and will be seen through to their desired end.

  42. But many of them will be broken.

  43. In fact, that's the sad reality of dealing with any human leadership.

  44. They are imperfect.

  45. Their words and their promises only go so far.

  46. In fact, you may be aware of this.

  47. There are certain websites that track campaign promises all the way to the end.

  48. These campaign promise trackers.

  49. They track them from the mouth of the politician all the way to see how they have been completed,

  50. if they have been completed, if they were lies to begin with,

  51. or whether we're still waiting to see if they might actually keep their promises.

  52. Last week, in verses 1 through 3 of Isaiah 55,

  53. we saw that God made His people a promise.

  54. He said,

  55. Come to me.

  56. Come to me, all who are thirsty.

  57. Come to the waters.

  58. Come drink.

  59. Come to me.

  60. Come all who are hungry.

  61. Come feast.

  62. Come all who are poor.

  63. Come all who are needy.

  64. Come to me and satisfy your soul in me.

  65. And here's the promise.

  66. And you will have life for your soul.

  67. That's a promise from the mouth of God.

  68. It's a promise to you this morning.

  69. That if you will listen diligently to the Word of God,

  70. and if you will believe and trust the promises of God,

  71. you will find satisfaction for your soul.

  72. You will receive life in the presence of God.

  73. And unlike us, unlike sinful men and women who make promises and don't fulfill,

  74. who say things and don't act,

  75. God is always true to His Word.

  76. Amen?

  77. We can trust that what He has spoken, He will fulfill.

  78. His promises can be trusted completely.

  79. So here in our passage this morning, God makes another incredible promise.

  80. Here in verses 3 through 5, look there with me.

  81. He promises anyone, even you this morning,

  82. if you will incline your ear and listen to the Word of God,

  83. if you will come and feast on the goodness of God,

  84. He says in verse 3,

  85. I will make with you an everlasting covenant.

  86. That is an eternal promise.

  87. And then He tells us what it is.

  88. What is God offering here?

  89. He says, it's my steadfast, sure love for David.

  90. My steadfast, sure love for David.

  91. And that is an incredible promise that God is holding out for us this morning,

  92. if we understand what that means.

  93. And so this morning, what I plan to do,

  94. what I'd like to do with our time together,

  95. is to trace that promise.

  96. All the way from the mouth of God Himself,

  97. to David in the Old Testament,

  98. to Christ,

  99. to us,

  100. and through us to the world.

  101. Okay?

  102. So we're going to trace that promise in three stages this morning.

  103. This will be our outline.

  104. If you're taking notes,

  105. I encourage you to take notes,

  106. to follow along.

  107. We'll track this promise in three stages this morning.

  108. God's love was promised to David.

  109. It was fulfilled in Christ.

  110. And now it is given to the nations.

  111. Three stages of this covenant love of God.

  112. It was promised to David,

  113. fulfilled in Christ,

  114. and given to the nations.

  115. So first,

  116. God's covenant love was promised to David.

  117. Look there again to verse three.

  118. God says,

  119. anyone who inclines their ear and comes to Him,

  120. anyone who hears,

  121. not just hears,

  122. but listens diligently,

  123. and trusts,

  124. and believes the promises of God,

  125. anyone can come into this soul-satisfying feast and live.

  126. And then He says,

  127. hear me,

  128. come to me,

  129. and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,

  130. my steadfast,

  131. sure love for David.

  132. What is that?

  133. Now what is He talking about here?

  134. David is dead and gone.

  135. Even by the time Isaiah is writing this prophecy,

  136. David is long gone.

  137. So what does this mean,

  138. that God is promising His steadfast,

  139. sure love for David

  140. to any who would come and hear

  141. and feast on these promises of God?

  142. Well, in order for us to understand

  143. what He's offering here,

  144. we need to turn backwards

  145. to the Old Testament

  146. in 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  147. And so if you have your Bibles open,

  148. please turn there again,

  149. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  150. This is the passage that was read earlier for us.

  151. We need to turn there and lay eyes on this promise.

  152. So King David,

  153. he had a desire to make a house for God.

  154. He wanted to build a temple for the Lord,

  155. a place of worship for the Lord.

  156. But the Lord said,

  157. you're not going to build me a house.

  158. Instead, guess what?

  159. I'm going to build you a house.

  160. And then he made some incredible promises here to David.

  161. Listen to what he promises David here.

  162. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  163. I'm going to start in verse 5.

  164. We'll read it and then we'll break it down.

  165. God says,

  166. Go and tell my servant David,

  167. thus says the Lord,

  168. would you build me a house to dwell in?

  169. I've not lived in a house

  170. since the day I brought up the people Israel

  171. from Egypt to this day,

  172. but I've been moving about in a tent for my dwelling.

  173. In all the places where I have moved

  174. with all the people of Israel,

  175. did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel

  176. whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel,

  177. saying,

  178. why have you not built me a house of cedar?

  179. Now therefore,

  180. thus you shall say to my servant David,

  181. thus says the Lord of hosts,

  182. I took you from the pasture,

  183. from following the sheep,

  184. that you should be a prince over my people Israel.

  185. And I've been with you wherever you went,

  186. and I've cut off all your enemies before you.

  187. Now here's the promise.

  188. Listen here.

  189. And I will make for you a great name,

  190. like the name of the great ones of the earth.

  191. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel

  192. and will plant them so that they may dwell in their own place

  193. and be disturbed no more.

  194. And violent men shall afflict them no more as formerly

  195. from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel.

  196. And I will give you rest from all your enemies.

  197. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.

  198. And when your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers,

  199. I will raise up your offspring after you,

  200. who shall come from your body,

  201. and I will establish his kingdom.

  202. He shall build a house for my name,

  203. and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  204. I will be to him a father,

  205. and he shall be to me a son.

  206. When he commits iniquity,

  207. I will discipline him with the rod of men,

  208. with the stripes of the son of men.

  209. But my steadfast love will not depart from him,

  210. as I took it from Saul,

  211. whom I put away from before you.

  212. And your house and your kingdom

  213. shall be made sure forever before me.

  214. Your throne shall be established forever.

  215. In accordance with all these words,

  216. and in accordance with all this vision,

  217. Nathan spoke to David.

  218. David.

  219. Now could you imagine?

  220. Place yourself in David's shoes here for a moment.

  221. Could you imagine being David

  222. and hearing these promises from the mouth of God?

  223. David knowing how undeserving he was,

  224. knowing that he was just a shepherd

  225. when God called him,

  226. not even tall or attractive in appearance like his brothers,

  227. but God called him to be king,

  228. knowing how much blood he had shed,

  229. how big of a sin he had committed,

  230. how deep he had fallen into rebellion against God.

  231. Yet God says,

  232. without any condition for David to meet,

  233. I will.

  234. I will.

  235. I will.

  236. I will.

  237. I will.

  238. See, this promise was totally undeserved,

  239. totally unmerited,

  240. and God said,

  241. I will do it.

  242. I will be faithful to my word.

  243. So what exactly did God promise David?

  244. We can break it down into four categories here.

  245. Four categories of this promise that God made to David.

  246. First, God promised David he would have a proclaimed name.

  247. He said in verse nine,

  248. I will make for you a great name.

  249. It's a name that would be proclaimed and revered.

  250. God will do it.

  251. He will proclaim the name of David throughout the land.

  252. Second, God promised David a place.

  253. Verse 10,

  254. I will appoint a place for my people Israel

  255. and will plant them so they may dwell in their own place

  256. and be disturbed no more.

  257. So God promised Israel with David as their appointed leader,

  258. their own land.

  259. He promised them a place,

  260. so a proclaimed name and a place,

  261. and within that place,

  262. third, God promised David protection.

  263. Promised David protection.

  264. Verses 10 and 11,

  265. God says,

  266. Israel will be disturbed no more.

  267. Violent men shall afflict them no more as formerly.

  268. Verse 11,

  269. I will give you rest from all your enemies.

  270. So this was a promise,

  271. you see,

  272. of peace and protection.

  273. God's people were no strangers to war.

  274. They were no strangers to attack.

  275. They had enemies on every side.

  276. But here God promises,

  277. I'm going to bring you into a place

  278. and I'm going to protect you from every enemy.

  279. And so far,

  280. if you know your Old Testament,

  281. none of this is new.

  282. And this is all recap.

  283. This is God rehashing old promises

  284. that he's already made to Abraham and to Moses.

  285. He's simply reiterating his promises,

  286. saying,

  287. I have not forgotten about my covenant.

  288. But as you read through the Old Testament,

  289. from Genesis all the way on,

  290. and you see God's plan unfold,

  291. it's like that lens is getting a little more focused.

  292. And so what was blurry at the beginning

  293. is becoming a little more defined,

  294. and we're seeing more and more clearly

  295. how these promises will be fulfilled.

  296. And so here in verse 12,

  297. we get something new.

  298. We get something new.

  299. He promises,

  300. fourth,

  301. a perpetual kingdom.

  302. A perpetual kingdom.

  303. Look there again,

  304. starting in verse 12.

  305. He says to David,

  306. When your days are fulfilled

  307. and you lie down with your fathers,

  308. I will raise up your offspring after you,

  309. who shall come from your body,

  310. and I will establish his kingdom.

  311. He shall build a house for my name,

  312. and get this,

  313. I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  314. This is a promise of a forever kingdom,

  315. a perpetual kingdom.

  316. David would have offspring to sit on his throne forever.

  317. Now, from the time this promise was made,

  318. every Israelite who knew of this promise

  319. was on the edge of their seat,

  320. just waiting and wondering,

  321. who will it be?

  322. Even as Isaiah spoke these words,

  323. they were waiting to be brought into their own land.

  324. They were waiting to go under the reign of this promised king.

  325. David was long gone.

  326. When will he come?

  327. When will this promised king come?

  328. When will this promise be fulfilled?

  329. When will the king come and reign forever?

  330. Three times he says that word forever.

  331. I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  332. Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever.

  333. Your throne shall be established forever.

  334. But all these kings keep dying.

  335. All of these sons of David,

  336. they live,

  337. they reign.

  338. David reigned 40 years,

  339. and then he died.

  340. Solomon reigned 40 years,

  341. and then he died.

  342. Is it Rehoboam?

  343. Is it Abijah?

  344. Is it King Asa?

  345. Every king from the line of David

  346. had all eyes on him.

  347. Imagine that pressure.

  348. Will this be the one?

  349. When will the king come?

  350. When will this promise be fulfilled?

  351. And then the pages of the Old Testament close.

  352. The promise is still sitting out there in the air.

  353. There's 400 years of silence.

  354. Did you know that?

  355. 400 years of silence between the Old Testament

  356. and the New Testament.

  357. And all the while,

  358. the people of Israel are waiting

  359. and wondering,

  360. who will this king be?

  361. When will he come to reign?

  362. And then the page flips.

  363. In the first verse,

  364. of the first chapter,

  365. of the first book,

  366. of the New Testament,

  367. Matthew 1.1,

  368. goes like this.

  369. The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,

  370. the son of David,

  371. the son of Abraham.

  372. See, this covenant love was promised to David

  373. and it was fulfilled, second,

  374. it was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

  375. Jesus Christ is the promised son of David.

  376. And the New Testament writers,

  377. they understood this

  378. and so they wanted to make sure,

  379. they made a big deal about making sure

  380. we understand that Jesus Christ

  381. is the son of David.

  382. Why?

  383. Because they want to be clear

  384. that all of the promises made to Abraham,

  385. all of the promises made to Moses,

  386. all of the promises made to David,

  387. they find their yes and amen

  388. in Jesus Christ.

  389. Church, why do we worship Jesus?

  390. Why is Jesus not just

  391. one religious figure among many?

  392. Why does he receive all of our worship,

  393. all of our devotion?

  394. You may wonder what it is about this man

  395. that we come together

  396. and we sing songs of worship to him

  397. every single week.

  398. We stand up here,

  399. we open up his book,

  400. we read about his glory,

  401. we read his word,

  402. we follow his leadership.

  403. We talk a lot about Jesus.

  404. Why?

  405. It's because Jesus Christ

  406. is the very center

  407. of the fulfillment of the plan of God.

  408. He is the fulfillment

  409. of every promise of God.

  410. If we want to know

  411. whether God is true to his promises,

  412. where do we look?

  413. We look to Jesus.

  414. Think about these promises

  415. that God made to David

  416. with me for a moment.

  417. God promised David a name

  418. that would be proclaimed,

  419. but what is the name of David

  420. compared to the name of Jesus?

  421. God promised David a name

  422. that would be proclaimed

  423. throughout all the world,

  424. but Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  425. it tells us this.

  426. Although God,

  427. although Jesus was in the form

  428. of God himself,

  429. although Jesus was sinless,

  430. he was perfect in every way,

  431. although he deserved no punishment,

  432. look what it says,

  433. he humbled himself

  434. by becoming obedient

  435. to the death,

  436. to the point of death,

  437. even death on a cross.

  438. Therefore,

  439. God has highly exalted him

  440. and bestowed on him what?

  441. The name

  442. that is above every name,

  443. so that at the name of Jesus

  444. every knee should bow

  445. in heaven

  446. and on earth

  447. and under the earth

  448. and every tongue confess

  449. that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  450. He's King.

  451. He reigns.

  452. He is Lord

  453. to the glory of God the Father.

  454. See,

  455. the name of Jesus Christ

  456. will be proclaimed

  457. throughout the world.

  458. He is Lord.

  459. He is King.

  460. He is God.

  461. God promised David

  462. and Israel

  463. a place,

  464. a promised land,

  465. but guess what?

  466. Jesus has also promised

  467. a place to reign.

  468. What is it?

  469. All of heaven and earth

  470. is under his reign.

  471. His reign is not limited

  472. to one people,

  473. one place,

  474. one time.

  475. He reigns over all.

  476. Universally.

  477. He is Lord of lords

  478. and King of kings.

  479. You see,

  480. this promised land

  481. is not just one patch

  482. of dirt on the earth.

  483. It is all of heaven

  484. and earth,

  485. renewed,

  486. recreated,

  487. restored under his reign.

  488. We don't see that

  489. in full right now,

  490. do we?

  491. We don't see it

  492. as it is,

  493. but one day

  494. we will.

  495. One day,

  496. all of heaven and earth

  497. will be totally

  498. under the reign

  499. of Christ.

  500. This is what we're

  501. waiting for.

  502. It has been promised.

  503. It has been purchased

  504. and one day,

  505. church,

  506. it will finally

  507. come to pass.

  508. So until then,

  509. what do we do?

  510. We pray,

  511. thy kingdom come,

  512. thy will be done

  513. on earth,

  514. as what?

  515. Help me.

  516. As it is in heaven.

  517. What does that mean?

  518. That means totally,

  519. totally and completely.

  520. As Peter says,

  521. according to his promises,

  522. we are waiting,

  523. waiting for new heavens

  524. and new earth

  525. where righteousness dwells.

  526. In that place,

  527. under his reign,

  528. there is protection.

  529. God promised David protection.

  530. God promised Israel protection.

  531. Church,

  532. we are safe

  533. in the hands

  534. of our king.

  535. One day,

  536. we'll be totally free

  537. from sickness

  538. and death

  539. and suffering.

  540. One day,

  541. we're not there yet.

  542. One day,

  543. that will come,

  544. but even now,

  545. you can know victory

  546. over every greatest enemy,

  547. every spiritual enemy.

  548. Those who are in Christ

  549. are protected

  550. totally

  551. from all of our

  552. greatest adversaries.

  553. Here's what that means.

  554. Christian,

  555. if you belong to Jesus,

  556. you are protected

  557. from the wrath of God

  558. against your sin.

  559. Amen?

  560. Friend,

  561. there is no greater enemy

  562. to you

  563. if you are outside of Christ,

  564. if you do not belong

  565. to the kingdom of Christ.

  566. God is your enemy.

  567. your sin is your enemy.

  568. But our king has come,

  569. and he has lived

  570. in our place.

  571. He has stood

  572. in our place.

  573. He lived perfectly

  574. where you and I

  575. could never live perfectly,

  576. so that all of our enemies

  577. of guilt

  578. and condemnation

  579. are wiped away forever.

  580. Our king has died

  581. in our place.

  582. Friends,

  583. so that the wrath of God

  584. that was against us

  585. because of our sin

  586. is wiped away forever.

  587. Church,

  588. Christ,

  589. our king,

  590. came to crush

  591. the power

  592. of sin,

  593. death,

  594. and the devil.

  595. Every spiritual enemy

  596. is defeated

  597. by this reigning king.

  598. If you belong

  599. to his kingdom,

  600. you are protected.

  601. Why do we worship Jesus?

  602. It's because

  603. in him alone,

  604. we're brought

  605. into the kingdom

  606. of God.

  607. In him alone,

  608. we know

  609. the blessing

  610. of this invitation

  611. to come

  612. and live

  613. and have your soul

  614. satisfied

  615. and live forever

  616. with the goodness

  617. of God.

  618. Do you want freedom

  619. from your sin?

  620. Do you want freedom

  621. from the curse

  622. of death?

  623. Would you come

  624. to Christ

  625. and live?

  626. Do you want freedom

  627. from the guilt

  628. that you have earned

  629. for your sin?

  630. Would you come

  631. and listen diligently

  632. and feast

  633. on the goodness

  634. of God,

  635. listen and trust

  636. his promises

  637. offered to you

  638. this moment

  639. in Christ,

  640. given freely

  641. to any who would come

  642. and submit themselves

  643. to this reigning king

  644. and you will live.

  645. And unlike David

  646. and Solomon

  647. and every other king

  648. who came

  649. and lived

  650. and died

  651. and then poof,

  652. it was over,

  653. King Jesus lives

  654. and reigns forever.

  655. Jesus rose

  656. from the grave.

  657. Why do we worship Jesus?

  658. He is risen.

  659. He reigns forever.

  660. He cannot die.

  661. His reign cannot end.

  662. Jesus is king forever.

  663. Jesus inherits

  664. a perpetual kingdom.

  665. He is the forever king.

  666. I know it's not Christmas.

  667. Everybody keeps telling me that.

  668. Is the hallelujah chorus

  669. not ringing in your ears?

  670. King of kings

  671. and Lord of lords.

  672. King of kings,

  673. Lord of lords.

  674. King of kings,

  675. Lord of lords.

  676. And he shall reign

  677. forever

  678. and ever

  679. and ever.

  680. This is what Gabriel

  681. told Mary,

  682. isn't it?

  683. Do not be afraid,

  684. Mary,

  685. for you have found

  686. favor with God.

  687. And behold,

  688. you will conceive

  689. in your womb

  690. and bear a son

  691. and you shall call

  692. his name Jesus.

  693. He will be great.

  694. It's an understatement.

  695. And will be called

  696. the son of the most high.

  697. And the Lord God

  698. will give to him

  699. the throne

  700. of his father,

  701. David.

  702. And he will reign

  703. over the house

  704. of Jacob

  705. forever.

  706. And of his kingdom,

  707. there will be

  708. no end.

  709. exactly as God

  710. had promised

  711. to David.

  712. But listen to this.

  713. Christ came

  714. and lived

  715. and died

  716. and rose

  717. to share

  718. that love

  719. of God

  720. with the nations.

  721. to scatter

  722. abroad

  723. the love

  724. of God

  725. to any

  726. who would come,

  727. any who would hear,

  728. any who would trust

  729. in these promises

  730. that God makes.

  731. This love

  732. was promised

  733. to David.

  734. It was fulfilled

  735. in Christ.

  736. And third,

  737. it is now

  738. given

  739. freely

  740. to the nations.

  741. Look there

  742. with me

  743. again

  744. back to our passage.

  745. Isaiah 55

    Isaiah 55:4

  746. verses 4 and 5.

  747. Verses 4 and 5.

  748. Behold,

  749. I made him

  750. a witness

  751. to the peoples,

  752. a leader

  753. and commander

  754. that is not just

  755. for the Jews,

  756. not just for one race,

  757. not just for one people,

  758. but for the peoples.

  759. Behold,

  760. you shall call

  761. a nation

  762. that you did not know

  763. and a nation

  764. that did not know you

  765. shall run to you.

  766. Why?

  767. Because of the Lord

  768. your God

  769. and of the Holy One

  770. of Israel

  771. for he

  772. has glorified

  773. you.

  774. You know,

  775. this was a

  776. stumbling block

  777. for the Jews.

  778. This Jewish

  779. Messiah,

  780. this fulfillment

  781. for a promise

  782. made to a Jewish

  783. king

  784. on behalf

  785. of Jewish people,

  786. he's going to come

  787. and he's going to reign

  788. on behalf

  789. of the Jews,

  790. right?

  791. He's creating

  792. a forever kingdom

  793. for the Jews,

  794. right?

  795. Absolutely,

  796. yes,

  797. if they listen

  798. and trust

  799. the promises

  800. of God

  801. fulfilled in

  802. Jesus Christ,

  803. but Christ

  804. did not just

  805. come for the Jews.

  806. Praise God,

  807. right?

  808. He was made

  809. a witness

  810. to the peoples.

  811. He was a leader

  812. and a commander

  813. for the peoples.

  814. Gentiles.

  815. Most of us

  816. in the room

  817. are not ethnically

  818. Jewish.

  819. We are Gentiles.

  820. We are the nation

  821. that did not know

  822. God.

  823. We are the peoples

  824. that were outside

  825. of this covenant

  826. love of God

  827. that have now

  828. been brought in

  829. by the sheer love

  830. and sheer grace

  831. of God,

  832. the sheer mercy

  833. of God,

  834. has brought us

  835. as outsiders

  836. into the family

  837. of God

  838. where we do

  839. not belong.

  840. Now here's where

  841. with the time

  842. we have left

  843. I want to make

  844. some application.

  845. Okay?

  846. First,

  847. do you realize

  848. how loved you are

  849. in Christ?

  850. Do you realize

  851. how loved

  852. you are

  853. by God

  854. in Christ?

  855. I cannot think

  856. of a more

  857. powerful statement

  858. of God's love

  859. than this.

  860. God demonstrates

  861. His love for us

  862. in that while

  863. we were still

  864. what?

  865. Sinners.

  866. Christ died

  867. for us.

  868. For us.

  869. Who had

  870. no claim

  871. to Him

  872. whatsoever.

  873. We do not

  874. belong

  875. in this covenant.

  876. We do not

  877. belong

  878. in this

  879. love of God

  880. for David

  881. and for His

  882. people.

  883. We have no

  884. claim to it

  885. whatsoever.

  886. But God

  887. sent His

  888. own Son

  889. to die

  890. to bring us

  891. into His

  892. love

  893. if we would

  894. but listen

  895. and find

  896. soul satisfaction

  897. in Him.

  898. Do you know

  899. how loved

  900. you are

  901. in Christ?

  902. And how

  903. totally

  904. outside of

  905. you

  906. that love

  907. is?

  908. it's not

  909. based on

  910. you at

  911. all.

  912. It's not

  913. based on

  914. me at

  915. all.

  916. It's not

  917. dependent

  918. on us

  919. at all.

  920. And because

  921. He has

  922. brought you

  923. in

  924. and united

  925. you to

  926. His Son

  927. by faith,

  928. His love

  929. for us,

  930. His love

  931. for you

  932. is as sure

  933. as His love

  934. for Christ

  935. Himself.

  936. God can

  937. no sooner

  938. abandon

  939. you,

  940. believer,

  941. than He

  942. could abandon

  943. His own

  944. Son.

  945. His love

  946. for you

  947. is steadfast.

  948. It is

  949. sure.

  950. And we have

  951. all of

  952. eternity

  953. to feast

  954. our souls

  955. on the

  956. depth

  957. of that

  958. love.

  959. Second,

  960. second

  961. application.

  962. when we

  963. grasp this,

  964. when we

  965. grasp that

  966. unmerited,

  967. undeserved

  968. love of

  969. God,

  970. how freely

  971. God has

  972. opened up

  973. His arms

  974. and called

  975. the nations

  976. to Himself

  977. including

  978. little old

  979. us,

  980. how could

  981. we resist

  982. the privilege

  983. of joining

  984. Him in

  985. His mission

  986. to make

  987. worshipers

  988. out of all

  989. the peoples

  990. of the

  991. earth?

  992. God

  993. is

  994. we spoke

  995. last

  996. Sunday

  997. morning

  998. and then

  999. again

  1000. last Sunday

  1001. evening

  1002. about the

  1003. privilege

  1004. and the

  1005. task

  1006. of

  1007. evangelism,

  1008. sharing

  1009. the gospel,

  1010. sharing

  1011. the good

  1012. news,

  1013. extending

  1014. this invitation

  1015. to all

  1016. who don't

  1017. know the

  1018. goodness

  1019. of God.

  1020. And we

  1021. talked about

  1022. several reasons

  1023. why maybe

  1024. we hesitate

  1025. to share

  1026. the gospel,

  1027. maybe we

  1028. don't share

  1029. the gospel

  1030. at all.

  1031. Several

  1032. reasons

  1033. were mentioned.

  1034. I see

  1035. two here

  1036. in this

  1037. passage.

  1038. One,

  1039. we don't

  1040. grasp God's

  1041. love for

  1042. us.

  1043. We don't

  1044. grasp it,

  1045. how free,

  1046. how undeserving,

  1047. how satisfying

  1048. His love

  1049. is for

  1050. sinners.

  1051. And two,

  1052. we don't

  1053. share God's

  1054. love for

  1055. others.

  1056. We don't

  1057. share God's

  1058. love for

  1059. others.

  1060. Why don't

  1061. we share

  1062. the gospel?

  1063. Because we

  1064. have not

  1065. synced up

  1066. our heart

  1067. with God's.

  1068. God intends

  1069. to make

  1070. worshipers out

  1071. of all

  1072. the peoples

  1073. of the

  1074. earth,

  1075. and He

  1076. will do

  1077. it.

  1078. And He

  1079. will maximize

  1080. the fame

  1081. of Christ,

  1082. His glory

  1083. among the

  1084. nations.

  1085. And how

  1086. is He

  1087. going to

  1088. do it,

  1089. church?

  1090. Through

  1091. us.

  1092. He does

  1093. it through

  1094. the church.

  1095. those who

  1096. have known

  1097. this

  1098. steadfast love

  1099. of God

  1100. will share

  1101. it with

  1102. others so

  1103. that all

  1104. the peoples

  1105. of the

  1106. world will

  1107. join in

  1108. worship.

  1109. We will

  1110. be satisfied,

  1111. He will

  1112. be glorified.

  1113. That's the

  1114. mission of

  1115. the church.

  1116. That's what

  1117. we're here to

  1118. do.

  1119. Did you know

  1120. that?

  1121. We're here to

  1122. be satisfied

  1123. in Him and

  1124. to share

  1125. that soul

  1126. satisfying feast

  1127. with any

  1128. who would

  1129. come.

  1130. And here,

  1131. our mission

  1132. is to fill

  1133. the earth

  1134. with worship.

  1135. And Isaiah

  1136. says,

  1137. as Christ

  1138. through us

  1139. opens up

  1140. His word,

  1141. extends this

  1142. invitation to

  1143. come,

  1144. to turn from

  1145. your idols,

  1146. to come,

  1147. to turn to

  1148. me,

  1149. to listen to

  1150. me,

  1151. to come

  1152. that your

  1153. soul might

  1154. live,

  1155. come,

  1156. be satisfied

  1157. in me.

  1158. He says,

  1159. the nations

  1160. will run

  1161. with urgency

  1162. and joy

  1163. to their

  1164. king.

  1165. Church,

  1166. this is why

  1167. we go

  1168. to the

  1169. uttermost

  1170. ends of

  1171. the world.

  1172. This is a

  1173. promise for

  1174. all

  1175. peoples.

  1176. Do you

  1177. desire for

  1178. the name

  1179. of Christ

  1180. to be

  1181. known?

  1182. Where it

  1183. has not

  1184. been named

  1185. before?

  1186. Do you

  1187. desire for

  1188. God to be

  1189. glorified where

  1190. He is not

  1191. worshipped as

  1192. He deserves?

  1193. Do you

  1194. desire for

  1195. those who

  1196. are perishing

  1197. throughout the

  1198. world to

  1199. hear the

  1200. good news

  1201. of Christ

  1202. and to

  1203. believe

  1204. that they

  1205. can know

  1206. God and

  1207. live?

  1208. Do you

  1209. see the

  1210. world with

  1211. that vision?

  1212. I remember

  1213. when I bought

  1214. my first pair

  1215. of polarized

  1216. sunglasses

  1217. and before

  1218. that I was

  1219. just using

  1220. whatever cheap

  1221. pair of

  1222. glasses I

  1223. could find

  1224. at the

  1225. store.

  1226. It

  1227. didn't

  1228. matter

  1229. too much

  1230. to me.

  1231. But then

  1232. I bought

  1233. a real

  1234. pair of

  1235. polarized

  1236. lenses

  1237. polarized

  1238. glasses

  1239. with

  1240. tinted

  1241. shade

  1242. lenses

  1243. and they

  1244. came and

  1245. I put

  1246. them on

  1247. and let

  1248. me tell

  1249. you it

  1250. was a

  1251. game changer.

  1252. Details that

  1253. I hadn't

  1254. noticed before

  1255. were brought

  1256. to life

  1257. is like I

  1258. saw the

  1259. world in a

  1260. whole new

  1261. way.

  1262. You know

  1263. that's how

  1264. it is when

  1265. we come

  1266. into the

  1267. kingdom.

  1268. we begin

  1269. to see

  1270. the world

  1271. with kingdom

  1272. tinted

  1273. shades.

  1274. This is

  1275. what Paul

  1276. says in

  1277. 2 Corinthians

  1278. he says

  1279. this

  1280. from now

  1281. on

  1282. therefore

  1283. we regard

  1284. no one

  1285. according to

  1286. the flesh

  1287. that's what

  1288. we used

  1289. to do

  1290. even though

  1291. we once

  1292. regarded

  1293. Christ

  1294. according to

  1295. the flesh

  1296. we regard

  1297. him thus

  1298. no longer

  1299. therefore

  1300. if anyone

  1301. is in

  1302. Christ

  1303. he is a

  1304. new

  1305. creation

  1306. the old

  1307. that's

  1308. passed away

  1309. behold

  1310. the new

  1311. has come

  1312. all this

  1313. is from

  1314. God

  1315. who

  1316. through

  1317. Christ

  1318. reconciled

  1319. us

  1320. to himself

  1321. and gave

  1322. us

  1323. the ministry

  1324. of

  1325. reconciliation

  1326. that is

  1327. in Christ

  1328. God

  1329. was reconciling

  1330. the world

  1331. to himself

  1332. not counting

  1333. their trespasses

  1334. against them

  1335. and entrusting

  1336. to

  1337. us

  1338. church

  1339. the ministry

  1340. of

  1341. reconciliation

  1342. therefore

  1343. we are

  1344. ambassadors

  1345. for

  1346. Christ

  1347. God

  1348. making

  1349. his

  1350. appeal

  1351. through

  1352. us

  1353. calling

  1354. the

  1355. nations

  1356. through

  1357. us

  1358. we

  1359. implore

  1360. you

  1361. on

  1362. behalf

  1363. of

  1364. Christ

  1365. be

  1366. reconciled

  1367. to

  1368. God

  1369. you see

  1370. when we

  1371. come into

  1372. the kingdom

  1373. of God

  1374. we begin

  1375. to see

  1376. the world

  1377. differently

  1378. it's not

  1379. about

  1380. us

  1381. it is a

  1382. mission field

  1383. for the glory

  1384. of God

  1385. we see

  1386. we see

  1387. our identity

  1388. and our

  1389. citizenship

  1390. differently

  1391. we're not

  1392. primarily

  1393. American

  1394. citizens

  1395. did you

  1396. know that

  1397. we're

  1398. citizens

  1399. of the

  1400. kingdom

  1401. of God

  1402. who has

  1403. placed us

  1404. providentially

  1405. here

  1406. in America

  1407. our

  1408. priorities

  1409. are no

  1410. longer

  1411. of this

  1412. world

  1413. the day

  1414. to day

  1415. concerns

  1416. of life

  1417. the things

  1418. that mess

  1419. us all

  1420. up

  1421. and stress

  1422. us out

  1423. our

  1424. priorities

  1425. and our

  1426. concerns

  1427. are

  1428. kingdom

  1429. concerns

  1430. how can

  1431. I

  1432. bring

  1433. glory

  1434. to God

  1435. today

  1436. our

  1437. mission

  1438. is no

  1439. longer

  1440. about

  1441. self

  1442. church

  1443. it is

  1444. to make

  1445. disciples

  1446. to bring

  1447. fame

  1448. to the

  1449. name

  1450. of

  1451. Jesus

  1452. so let

  1453. me close

  1454. with a

  1455. story that

  1456. I heard

  1457. last week

  1458. and this

  1459. is a

  1460. story

  1461. about

  1462. people

  1463. who see

  1464. the world

  1465. through

  1466. kingdom

  1467. tinted

  1468. lenses

  1469. there are

  1470. ordinary

  1471. people like

  1472. you and

  1473. me

  1474. I don't

  1475. know

  1476. them

  1477. Amanda

  1478. showed

  1479. me a

  1480. video

  1481. of their

  1482. work

  1483. last

  1484. week

  1485. they live

  1486. as

  1487. missionaries

  1488. in

  1489. Papua

  1490. New

  1491. Guinea

  1492. but their

  1493. aim

  1494. is not

  1495. to reach

  1496. Papua

  1497. New

  1498. Guinea

  1499. generally

  1500. it is

  1501. focused

  1502. in

  1503. on

  1504. one

  1505. specific

  1506. people

  1507. group

  1508. unreached

  1509. people

  1510. group

  1511. there

  1512. in

  1513. Papua

  1514. New

  1515. Guinea

  1516. called

  1517. the

  1518. Maliali

  1519. people

  1520. God

  1521. said

  1522. all

  1523. the

  1524. peoples

  1525. of

  1526. the

  1527. earth

  1528. will

  1529. know

  1530. me

  1531. that

  1532. includes

  1533. the

  1534. Maliali

  1535. people

  1536. so

  1537. they

  1538. went

  1539. believing

  1540. the

  1541. promise

  1542. of

  1543. God

  1544. believing

  1545. that

  1546. promise

  1547. offering

  1548. it

  1549. to

  1550. this

  1551. people

  1552. here's

  1553. what

  1554. they

  1555. said

  1556. in

  1557. the

  1558. video

  1559. they

  1560. said

  1561. this

  1562. the

  1563. Maliali

  1564. so far

  1565. as

  1566. we

  1567. know

  1568. have

  1569. not

  1570. had

  1571. access

  1572. to

  1573. the

  1574. gospel

  1575. and

  1576. there

  1577. is

  1578. not

  1579. a

  1580. single

  1581. known

  1582. Christian

  1583. among

  1584. them

  1585. our

  1586. purpose

  1587. there

  1588. is

  1589. to

  1590. see

  1591. a

  1592. mature

  1593. church

  1594. planted

  1595. among

  1596. them

  1597. and

  1598. we're

  1599. going

  1600. about

  1601. this

  1602. work

  1603. in

  1604. four

  1605. ways

  1606. let

  1607. me

  1608. pause

  1609. there

  1610. unreached

  1611. people

  1612. group

  1613. not

  1614. a

  1615. no

  1616. Christian

  1617. among

  1618. them

  1619. in

  1620. the

  1621. history

  1622. of

  1623. their

  1624. people

  1625. their

  1626. goal

  1627. is

  1628. to

  1629. plant

  1630. a

  1631. mature

  1632. church

  1633. you

  1634. see

  1635. that

  1636. going

  1637. about

  1638. that

  1639. in

  1640. four

  1641. ways

  1642. first

  1643. learn

  1644. their

  1645. language

  1646. and

  1647. their

  1648. culture

  1649. these

  1650. are

  1651. English

  1652. speaking

  1653. missionaries

  1654. English

  1655. speaking

  1656. missionaries

  1657. who over

  1658. the past

  1659. few

  1660. years

  1661. have

  1662. have

  1663. gone

  1664. and

  1665. immersed

  1666. themselves

  1667. in

  1668. the

  1669. language

  1670. they've

  1671. become

  1672. fluent

  1673. in this

  1674. Malayali

  1675. language

  1676. and the

  1677. Malayali

  1678. culture

  1679. to

  1680. second

  1681. to develop

  1682. an alphabet

  1683. in their

  1684. unwritten

  1685. language

  1686. language

  1687. they

  1688. they don't

  1689. have

  1690. a

  1691. written

  1692. language

  1693. they

  1694. have

  1695. a

  1696. spoken

  1697. language

  1698. they

  1699. learned

  1700. the

  1701. language

  1702. through

  1703. their

  1704. ears

  1705. they're

  1706. formulating

  1707. an alphabet

  1708. a

  1709. written

  1710. language

  1711. and they

  1712. desire

  1713. to teach

  1714. them

  1715. to read

  1716. and to

  1717. write

  1718. in their

  1719. own

  1720. language

  1721. so these

  1722. missionaries

  1723. they've

  1724. gone

  1725. to understand

  1726. their

  1727. language

  1728. with a

  1729. purpose

  1730. that they

  1731. can

  1732. write

  1733. it

  1734. so they

  1735. can

  1736. communicate

  1737. with

  1738. these

  1739. people

  1740. in their

  1741. own

  1742. language

  1743. so they're

  1744. teaching

  1745. literacy

  1746. classes

  1747. there

  1748. why

  1749. why

  1750. so they

  1751. can read

  1752. so that

  1753. they will

  1754. one day

  1755. be able

  1756. to read

  1757. God's

  1758. word

  1759. for

  1760. themselves

  1761. in their

  1762. own

  1763. native

  1764. tongue

  1765. see these

  1766. missionaries

  1767. won't last

  1768. forever

  1769. they will

  1770. come

  1771. they will

  1772. die

  1773. God's

  1774. word

  1775. will last

  1776. forever

  1777. so they've

  1778. come

  1779. to formulate

  1780. a language

  1781. formulate

  1782. an alphabet

  1783. teach them

  1784. how to

  1785. read

  1786. so that

  1787. they can

  1788. read

  1789. and

  1790. understand

  1791. God's

  1792. word

  1793. in their

  1794. own

  1795. native

  1796. tongue

  1797. so third

  1798. they're

  1799. working

  1800. to

  1801. translate

  1802. the

  1803. Bible

  1804. into

  1805. the

  1806. Malayali

  1807. language

  1808. and make

  1809. an alphabet

  1810. translate

  1811. the entire

  1812. Bible

  1813. into

  1814. that

  1815. language

  1816. for

  1817. this

  1818. one

  1819. little

  1820. people

  1821. group

  1822. raise

  1823. your

  1824. hand

  1825. if

  1826. you

  1827. had

  1828. heard

  1829. of

  1830. the

  1831. Malayali

  1832. people

  1833. before

  1834. this

  1835. morning

  1836. not

  1837. me

  1838. but now

  1839. they can

  1840. hold

  1841. in their

  1842. own

  1843. hands

  1844. a copy

  1845. of

  1846. God's

  1847. word

  1848. and read

  1849. it

  1850. for

  1851. themselves

  1852. pass

  1853. it down

  1854. from

  1855. generation

  1856. to

  1857. generation

  1858. that's

  1859. how a

  1860. healthy

  1861. mature

  1862. church

  1863. is going

  1864. to be

  1865. established

  1866. there

  1867. is through

  1868. the word

  1869. of God

  1870. and then

  1871. they're not

  1872. going to leave

  1873. because fourth

  1874. they plan

  1875. to stay

  1876. and teach

  1877. the Bible

  1878. and make

  1879. disciples

  1880. as they

  1881. preach

  1882. and teach

  1883. and explain

  1884. the word

  1885. of God

  1886. for as long

  1887. as the Lord

  1888. would have

  1889. them

  1890. stay

  1891. why

  1892. would

  1893. they

  1894. do

  1895. all

  1896. that

  1897. why

  1898. would

  1899. anybody

  1900. do

  1901. that

  1902. give

  1903. their

  1904. life

  1905. away

  1906. leave

  1907. your

  1908. home

  1909. country

  1910. go

  1911. live

  1912. in the

  1913. middle

  1914. of a

  1915. bush

  1916. in

  1917. Papua

  1918. New

  1919. Guinea

  1920. go

  1921. where

  1922. nobody

  1923. knows

  1924. you

  1925. nobody

  1926. speaks

  1927. your

  1928. language

  1929. you

  1930. might

  1931. be

  1932. welcomed

  1933. you

  1934. might

  1935. not

  1936. the

  1937. only

  1938. reason

  1939. for

  1940. anyone

  1941. to go

  1942. do

  1943. something

  1944. like

  1945. that

  1946. is

  1947. that

  1948. they

  1949. believe

  1950. the

  1951. promises

  1952. of

  1953. God

  1954. that

  1955. any

  1956. who

  1957. call

  1958. upon

  1959. the

  1960. name

  1961. of

  1962. the

  1963. Lord

  1964. will

  1965. be

  1966. saved

  1967. they

  1968. know

  1969. that

  1970. love

  1971. of

  1972. God

  1973. personally

  1974. and

  1975. second

  1976. they

  1977. share

  1978. the

  1979. heart

  1980. of

  1981. God

  1982. for

  1983. others

  1984. that

  1985. all

  1986. the

  1987. peoples

  1988. of

  1989. the

  1990. earth

  1991. will

  1992. know

  1993. him

  1994. that

  1995. nations

  1996. who

  1997. do

  1998. not

  1999. know

  2000. him

  2001. now

  2002. will

  2003. run

  2004. to

  2005. him

  2006. when

  2007. his

  2008. name

  2009. is

  2010. proclaimed

  2011. is

  2012. that

  2013. your

  2014. heart

  2015. is

  2016. that

  2017. the

  2018. desire

  2019. of

  2020. your

  2021. heart

  2022. church

  2023. if

  2024. not

  2025. I

  2026. want

  2027. to

  2028. invite

  2029. you

  2030. let's

  2031. let's

  2032. begin

  2033. to

  2034. pray

  2035. that

  2036. God

  2037. would

  2038. do

  2039. that

  2040. in

  2041. us

  2042. that

  2043. he

  2044. would

  2045. change

  2046. our

  2047. heart

  2048. to

  2049. represent

  2050. and

  2051. to

  2052. match

  2053. his

  2054. heart

  2055. for

  2056. the

  2057. nations

  2058. and

  2059. then

  2060. let's

  2061. go

  2062. out

  2205. of

  2206. time
