  1. Well, if you would, please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of 1 Peter.

  2. And this is a little bit out of the ordinary for what we normally do.

  3. Typically, we preach straight through books of the Bible.

  4. But leading up to the evening of January 29th, when we will covenant together as a church,

  5. and then February 5th, when we'll have our first public service together as Seaweed Bay Baptist Church,

  6. we are walking through our mission and vision together.

  7. As a church.

  8. So last week, if you were here, you heard our mission statement is to magnify the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  9. That's the mission of your life, the purpose of your life.

  10. That's the purpose of the church, not just this church, but the church.

  11. That's God's mission in the gospel is to magnify the glory of his name.

  12. And so now, for the next three weeks, Lord willing, we're going to talk about each part of the how, of how we go about that mission.

  13. How do we magnify the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ?

  14. And the first way how, that we'll see this morning from 1 Peter 1, verses 3 through 9,

    1 Peter 1:3–9

  15. is that we magnify the glory of God when we enjoy him.

  16. We magnify him by enjoying him.

  17. And we asked last week, what is the chief end of man?

  18. It's to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.

  19. You may be familiar with John Piper's popular twist on that answer.

  20. He says it's to glorify God by enjoying him forever.

  21. So if you would, Bible's open.

  22. Follow along with me as I read.

  23. We're going to be in 1 Peter 1, verses 3 through 9.

    1 Peter 1:3–9

  24. And what we'll see is that we have so much to rejoice in as believers in Christ.

  25. Amen?

  26. So follow with me, 1 Peter 1, verses 3 through 9.

    1 Peter 1:3–9

  27. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  28. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope

  29. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

  30. to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading,

  31. kept in heaven for you,

  32. who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation

  33. ready to be revealed in the last time.

  34. In this you rejoice,

  35. though now for a little while, if necessary,

  36. you have been grieved by various trials,

  37. so that the tested genuineness of your faith,

  38. more precious than gold that perishes,

  39. though it is tested by fire,

  40. may be found to result in praise and glory and honor

  41. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  42. Though you have not seen him, you love him.

  43. Though you do not now see him,

  44. you believe in him,

  45. and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible

  46. and filled with glory,

  47. obtaining the outcome of your faith,

  48. the salvation of your souls.

  49. This is the word of God.

  50. Would you please bow and pray with me?

  51. Lord,

  52. truly we have much to rejoice in.

  53. And we thank you for the good news of the gospel.

  54. We thank you for your work in Christ.

  55. And we pray, I pray now,

  56. that you would speak powerfully

  57. through the preaching of your word,

  58. for the joy of your people,

  59. and the glory of your name.

  60. We pray this in Christ's name.

  61. Amen.

  62. Well, I try as hard as I can

  63. to keep it from happening,

  64. but from time to time,

  65. every now and then,

  66. a Hallmark movie will appear

  67. on my television screen.

  68. It tends to happen more during the Christmas season,

  69. and if you're familiar with these films,

  70. each one of them tends to follow

  71. one of no more than three rotating plot lines.

  72. One of the most popular variations

  73. includes introducing us to a woman

  74. who is engaged to be married.

  75. She's busy planning the wedding,

  76. thinking through the details,

  77. going through the processes,

  78. but as you watch her go through this,

  79. you can tell something is just clearly off.

  80. Everyone around her,

  81. her mom,

  82. and usually a quirky best friend,

  83. can tell that despite what she says,

  84. she does not truly,

  85. truly, really love the man

  86. that she is getting ready to marry.

  87. She's committed to him.

  88. She made a commitment a long time ago,

  89. but it's clear she does not really,

  90. truly enjoy him.

  91. But in her mind,

  92. she's made a commitment.

  93. She's gotten this far down the road.

  94. Now she's just going to grit her teeth

  95. and bear it and go through with it

  96. until an unexpected better option

  97. happens to show up.

  98. And although she is reluctant at first,

  99. spoiler alert,

  100. she winds up getting together with him

  101. in the end.

  102. And although I'm sure that this is,

  103. can you hear me now?

  104. Although I'm sure that this is not

  105. what Hallmark had in mind,

  106. sadly,

  107. sadly,

  108. this resembles how many self-professing Christians

  109. go about their relationship with Christ.

  110. They have made some sort of verbal commitment years ago

  111. and they know in their minds at least

  112. that following Christ,

  113. being with him is a good option,

  114. at least better than what they know of the alternative.

  115. And so they simply go through the motions.

  116. They practice the routines.

  117. They walk through the practices.

  118. They come to church.

  119. They say their prayers.

  120. But if you take a closer look,

  121. something is clearly off.

  122. They do not truly love the man,

  123. Jesus Christ.

  124. They draw near with their mouth

  125. and honor him with their lips,

  126. but their hearts are far from him.

  127. They do not truly delight in the glory of God

  128. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  129. And the reason I share this

  130. is because as we move together

  131. towards covenanting

  132. in this new chapter of this church family,

  133. I want to make sure

  134. that this is not true of us.

  135. We don't want to be a group of people

  136. who simply claim Christ,

  137. come here, do church,

  138. walk through the routines,

  139. practice the habits,

  140. and don't truly enjoy the Lord.

  141. Amen?

  142. We want to be a people

  143. who truly from the bottom of our heart

  144. love and enjoy the glory of God.

  145. Don't you want that?

  146. Our relationship with Christ,

  147. as we'll see here in 1 Peter,

  148. is not meant to be a joyless marriage.

  149. Far from it.

  150. And we of all people

  151. have reason to rejoice.

  152. And so this morning,

  153. as we see in 1 Peter chapter 1,

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  154. we're going to see

  155. four reasons to rejoice this morning.

  156. Four reasons to rejoice.

  157. And this will be our outline this morning

  158. from 1 Peter chapter 1.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  159. If you're taking notes,

  160. this will help you to follow along.

  161. Four reasons to rejoice.

  162. And as we rejoice in Him,

  163. church, we magnify His glory.

  164. We make much of Him.

  165. First reason.

  166. Reason number one

  167. is we are to rejoice

  168. in our new life in Christ.

  169. Rejoice in your new life in Christ.

  170. Peter here in the book of 1 Peter,

  171. he's addressing those who,

  172. by the grace of God,

  173. are united to Christ by faith.

  174. He's addressing Christians.

  175. And so he calls them,

  176. in verse 1,

  177. elect exiles.

  178. Meaning they are those

  179. who no longer belong

  180. to this present world.

  181. They no longer belong

  182. to this present passing world.

  183. In this present evil age,

  184. they've been plucked out.

  185. And they now belong to God.

  186. And so their identity

  187. is not here in this present world.

  188. Their hope is not here

  189. in this present world.

  190. And their joy is not rooted

  191. here in this present world.

  192. They are, as he says in verse 13,

  193. they are to set their hope fully

  194. on the grace that will be brought to you

  195. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  196. It's future-oriented joy.

  197. But even so,

  198. our lives here and now

  199. in this present age

  200. as exiles

  201. are meant to be marked

  202. by rejoicing,

  203. marked by delighting

  204. and enjoying the glory

  205. of God.

  206. So here in verse 3,

  207. Peter gives us the first reason why.

  208. Look there to verse 3 with me.

  209. Blessed be the God and Father

  210. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  211. That's this worship,

  212. this magnification

  213. of the glory of God.

  214. Blessed be the God and Father

  215. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  216. Why?

  217. Because we have been given

  218. new life in Christ.

  219. He says,

  220. according to his great mercy,

  221. he, God,

  222. he has caused us

  223. to be born again

  224. to a living hope

  225. through the resurrection

  226. of Jesus Christ

  227. from the dead.

  228. That is reason to rejoice

  229. if you have it.

  230. This new spiritual life

  231. is the basis,

  232. this is the root

  233. of Christian joy.

  234. To know true and lasting joy,

  235. you must be born again.

  236. You know,

  237. that's not just a Baptist term.

  238. I know it's been popularized

  239. over the past several decades,

  240. but this is a thoroughly

  241. biblical requirement

  242. for true and lasting joy

  243. is that you be born again.

  244. I'm sure that you've heard me say before

  245. that born again Christian

  246. is a redundancy.

  247. There is no other type of Christian

  248. but a born again Christian.

  249. It's redundant.

  250. There's no other type.

  251. It's like when we say

  252. pin number, right?

  253. Personal identification,

  254. number, number.

  255. Or the Los Angeles angels.

  256. If you know Spanish,

  257. you know that means literally

  258. the, the, angels, angels.

  259. Right?

  260. Well, it's the same

  261. with born again Christian.

  262. Every genuine Christian

  263. has truly been born again.

  264. And there are plenty of individuals

  265. who call themselves Christian,

  266. who attend church,

  267. who read their Bibles,

  268. who say their prayers,

  269. who go through the routines

  270. and the rituals

  271. and the habits,

  272. but have never actually experienced

  273. being born again.

  274. But to truly be a Christian

  275. and to know the joy

  276. that Peter is talking about here,

  277. it requires,

  278. it means that you have,

  279. by the mercy of God,

  280. been genuinely born again.

  281. You have been regenerated.

  282. This is beyond our natural capacity

  283. to understand, isn't it?

  284. You might remember

  285. when Nicodemus came to Jesus

  286. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  287. He came in the middle of the night

  288. to speak with Jesus.

  289. And Jesus said to him,

  290. truly, truly,

  291. I say to you,

  292. unless one is,

  293. what?

  294. What did he say?

  295. Unless one is born again,

  296. he cannot see

  297. the kingdom of God.

  298. And Nicodemus,

  299. like us,

  300. he thought naturally.

  301. His mind immediately

  302. went to the physical

  303. and the natural,

  304. and so he answered

  305. with natural thinking.

  306. And he said,

  307. well, how can a man

  308. be born again

  309. when he's old?

  310. Can he enter a second time

  311. into his mother's womb

  312. and be born?

  313. And you can almost see

  314. the wheels turning,

  315. and I don't know

  316. how Jesus kept a straight face,

  317. but he did,

  318. and responded and said,

  319. no,

  320. that which is born of flesh

  321. is flesh,

  322. and that which is born of spirit

  323. is spirit.

  324. The first birth

  325. is into sin.

  326. It's into flesh.

  327. The second birth

  328. is entirely of a different kind.

  329. It's spiritual.

  330. See,

  331. our first birth,

  332. we inherited sin.

  333. We entered physically

  334. into this physical,

  335. sinful world.

  336. We're born as enemies

  337. of God,

  338. born as rebels

  339. of God,

  340. born as His enemies.

  341. But the second birth,

  342. the second birth

  343. makes us a new creation.

  344. And with that new life

  345. comes new capacities,

  346. and that heart of stone

  347. is turned into a heart

  348. of flesh.

  349. What was dead to sin,

  350. excuse me,

  351. what was dead to God

  352. and alive to sin

  353. is now dead to sin

  354. and alive to God.

  355. And so when you're born again,

  356. all of a sudden,

  357. you have these new desires

  358. to live a life

  359. that's pleasing to God.

  360. Where did that come from?

  361. You desire new capacity,

  362. new desire to say no to sin,

  363. to run from sin,

  364. to turn from sin,

  365. and to pursue righteousness.

  366. New capacities to see

  367. and to be aware

  368. that all of your life

  369. is a gift from God.

  370. It's meant to be

  371. directed towards Him

  372. and praise for His glory.

  373. You have new capacities

  374. to trust Him

  375. and to thank Him

  376. and to love Him

  377. and to enjoy Him.

  378. See, the Christian life,

  379. which begins at the new birth,

  380. is one of constant growth

  381. and progression

  382. and praising

  383. and enjoying

  384. the glory of God.

  385. So how do we do this?

  386. Well, Peter tells us,

  387. you don't.

  388. It's a work of God.

  389. Peter says,

  390. it is by His mercy,

  391. of His doing,

  392. for our good

  393. and for our joy,

  394. and ultimately

  395. for His glory.

  396. But He does give us

  397. another piece

  398. of crucial information here,

  399. which is that

  400. it is only through

  401. the resurrection

  402. of Jesus Christ

  403. from the dead.

  404. If we are to be born again,

  405. it is only possible

  406. through the good news

  407. of the gospel,

  408. through the resurrection

  409. of Christ.

  410. The Bible teaches us

  411. that Jesus,

  412. the eternal Son of God,

  413. became man.

  414. The eternal Son of God

  415. was born according

  416. to the flesh,

  417. yet without sin.

  418. So He could live

  419. in our place,

  420. He could die

  421. in our place,

  422. and then He could get up

  423. from the grave

  424. and rise up

  425. from the grave

  426. in our place.

  427. So He purchases

  428. new spiritual life

  429. for His people,

  430. for sinners,

  431. through His life,

  432. death,

  433. and resurrection.

  434. So now in Him,

  435. through His resurrection

  436. from the dead,

  437. sinners like me

  438. and like you

  439. who were once dead

  440. in our trespasses

  441. and sins

  442. can be forgiven

  443. of our sins,

  444. can be given

  445. new spiritual life.

  446. that is reason

  447. to rejoice

  448. this morning

  449. if you have it.

  450. Have you been born again?

  451. Have you been born again?

  452. Is your life marked

  453. by bitterness

  454. or anger

  455. or constant complaining

  456. and negativity

  457. and just joylessness?

  458. Or does your heart

  459. genuinely rejoice

  460. in the glory of God?

  461. Is your life marked

  462. by delight

  463. in Him

  464. and His glory?

  465. See, we need to

  466. constantly remember

  467. this gift

  468. that we've been given

  469. in the new birth

  470. and rejoice first

  471. in our new life

  472. in Christ.

  473. But not only that,

  474. second,

  475. second,

  476. Peter says

  477. we rejoice

  478. in our future hope

  479. in Christ.

  480. We rejoice

  481. in our future hope

  482. in Christ.

  483. This is the substance

  484. of our joy.

  485. Something that I think

  486. we need to be reminded of

  487. is not only

  488. what we're saved from

  489. but also

  490. what we're saved to.

  491. Okay?

  492. We need to remember

  493. for the sake of our joy

  494. not only what we're saved from

  495. but also

  496. especially

  497. what we are saved to.

  498. If we are

  499. in Christ

  500. we are saved

  501. from

  502. the wrath of God

  503. against our sin.

  504. And we said

  505. in our first birth

  506. we're born

  507. as sinners.

  508. We're natural born sinners.

  509. And there are two options

  510. and only two options

  511. for sinners like us.

  512. Either God's wrath

  513. is poured out

  514. against us

  515. in our sin

  516. and we bear

  517. the judgment

  518. that we deserve

  519. and we bear

  520. the wrath of God

  521. against our sin.

  522. We bear it

  523. in eternity

  524. in hell.

  525. Or,

  526. option number two,

  527. a substitute

  528. bears the wrath

  529. of God

  530. in our place.

  531. A substitute

  532. provided by God

  533. himself,

  534. Jesus Christ,

  535. who bore the wrath

  536. of God

  537. on the cross

  538. for every

  539. single one

  540. of his people.

  541. See,

  542. we need to remember

  543. and rejoice

  544. in what we've been saved

  545. from.

  546. That's reason to rejoice

  547. but even more so,

  548. even more so,

  549. I would argue.

  550. We need to rejoice

  551. in what we've been saved to.

  552. Our future hope

  553. is this inexhaustible

  554. fountain

  555. of everlasting joy

  556. for the Christian

  557. that we draw from

  558. and drink from

  559. and rejoice in

  560. now in the present

  561. and into eternity

  562. for the rest of eternity

  563. in the presence of God.

  564. You might imagine,

  565. just to illustrate this,

  566. a poor child

  567. who was born

  568. into an orphanage.

  569. It's understaffed,

  570. it's underfunded,

  571. it's overwhelmed,

  572. it's overlooked,

  573. it's broken down.

  574. He was born into it

  575. so he doesn't really know

  576. anything different.

  577. He has no idea

  578. what life would be like

  579. in a family.

  580. He gets a call

  581. up to the office

  582. and is told

  583. to gather up his things

  584. because he has been

  585. adopted.

  586. He knows what that word

  587. means,

  588. but he can't even

  589. wrap his mind

  590. around all that

  591. that entails.

  592. He knows what he's

  593. being taken out of,

  594. what he's being taken

  595. from,

  596. but his understanding

  597. of what he's going to

  598. is partial

  599. at best,

  600. limited

  601. at best.

  602. The words to describe it

  603. are insufficient

  604. at best,

  605. but this child,

  606. he's not just being adopted,

  607. he's being adopted

  608. by the king.

  609. He's not just being brought

  610. out of the orphanage,

  611. he's being brought

  612. into a castle,

  613. and not just as an outsider,

  614. but as a son.

  615. Not just as a visitor,

  616. but as one who will

  617. one day inherit

  618. the entire kingdom.

  619. How could he possibly

  620. begin to imagine

  621. what that would be like?

  622. You know,

  623. sometimes that's how

  624. it might be with us.

  625. We know what we've

  626. been taken out of,

  627. we know our sin,

  628. we know the judgment

  629. that is deserved

  630. for our sin,

  631. we know we're taken out

  632. of something terrible

  633. and brought into

  634. something unspeakably marvelous,

  635. but it's so far beyond

  636. our capacity

  637. to understand

  638. and describe

  639. that words

  640. are just insufficient.

  641. There's no language

  642. to help us understand

  643. our hope,

  644. and even what we know

  645. to be true

  646. sometimes just seems

  647. too good

  648. to be true.

  649. Peter here,

  650. in this chapter,

  651. he tries as hard

  652. as he can

  653. to put into words

  654. the glory

  655. of what we have

  656. to look forward to

  657. in Christ.

  658. He says there

  659. in verse 3,

  660. look there again,

  661. he says,

  662. we are born

  663. to

  664. a living

  665. hope.

  666. Because Christ,

  667. Jesus,

  668. is alive,

  669. our hope

  670. is alive.

  671. Verse 4,

  672. he says,

  673. we are born

  674. again

  675. to

  676. an inheritance.

  677. As sons

  678. and daughters

  679. of the king

  680. of all the universe,

  681. as sons

  682. and daughters

  683. of God himself,

  684. we now have

  685. the hope,

  686. the certain hope

  687. of a future

  688. inheritance.

  689. And unlike

  690. every treasure

  691. in this present age,

  692. this inheritance,

  693. he says,

  694. is imperishable,

  695. undefiled,

  696. and unfading.

  697. What can you

  698. describe

  699. in this world

  700. with those three words?

  701. What treasure

  702. can you imagine

  703. that exists

  704. here and now

  705. that you've enjoyed,

  706. that you hope

  707. to enjoy one day

  708. in your life,

  709. that you can describe

  710. with these three words?

  711. Imperishable,

  712. undefiled,

  713. and unfading.

  714. You can't do it.

  715. If you won

  716. the lottery tomorrow,

  717. $300 billion

  718. dropped in your

  719. bank account,

  720. guess what?

  721. At some point,

  722. either the money

  723. would run out,

  724. the money would perish,

  725. or at some point,

  726. guess what?

  727. You'll perish,

  728. and you won't be able

  729. to spend it.

  730. It'll be gone.

  731. Its worth will be lost.

  732. If someone far off

  733. in your family

  734. were to write you

  735. into their will,

  736. and you inherited

  737. acres upon acres

  738. upon acres

  739. of land,

  740. guess what?

  741. It would grow weeds,

  742. thorns,

  743. and thistles.

  744. It would be

  745. an incredible blessing,

  746. but imperfect.

  747. It would be defiled

  748. by sin.

  749. If you were able

  750. to purchase

  751. whatever earthly treasure

  752. you could set

  753. your mind on,

  754. that new vehicle,

  755. that truck,

  756. that boat,

  757. that house,

  758. whatever it might be,

  759. your joy in it

  760. would fade eventually,

  761. wouldn't it?

  762. And that item,

  763. whatever it is,

  764. would decay.

  765. It would lose

  766. its luster.

  767. If you place

  768. your pride

  769. and your joy

  770. in your own

  771. physical beauty

  772. or in the strength

  773. of your physical body,

  774. guess what?

  775. One day,

  776. it will fade.

  777. Your body will break down

  778. and your strength

  779. will grow weak.

  780. It will degenerate.

  781. Every earthly treasure

  782. is perishable.

  783. It is defiled

  784. and it fades.

  785. And if our joy

  786. is rooted here

  787. in the present,

  788. in these things

  789. of this present age,

  790. then our joy

  791. will likewise perish.

  792. Our joy

  793. will fade.

  794. Our joy

  795. will be defiled.

  796. We have a diminishing

  797. rate of return

  798. on the investment

  799. of our joy

  800. in things

  801. of this present age.

  802. But for the Christian,

  803. for the Christian,

  804. Peter says,

  805. we rejoice

  806. because our future

  807. inheritance

  808. is perfect.

  809. It's perfect.

  810. It cannot perish.

  811. It cannot be defiled.

  812. It cannot fade.

  813. And so,

  814. if our joy

  815. is rooted there,

  816. then our joy,

  817. likewise,

  818. cannot perish.

  819. Cannot be defiled.

  820. Cannot fade.

  821. Fade.

  822. All we have

  823. to look forward

  824. to is ever-increasing joy

  825. every moment

  826. of the rest

  827. of eternity

  828. if we are

  829. in Christ.

  830. I wonder how often

  831. you meditate

  832. on the glory

  833. of your future hope.

  834. How often

  835. do you

  836. let your future

  837. hope in Christ

  838. shape your daily

  839. decisions

  840. here and now?

  841. How often

  842. do you

  843. let it

  844. shape your thoughts

  845. and shape

  846. your emotions?

  847. You know,

  848. the constant refrain

  849. of the New Testament

  850. for believers

  851. is over and over

  852. and over again,

  853. set your hope

  854. there.

  855. Set your joy

  856. there.

  857. Set your eyes

  858. there.

  859. Long for that

  860. future inheritance.

  861. We are waiting

  862. for our future

  863. hope to be

  864. realized.

  865. Christ.

  866. Well,

  867. you might ask,

  868. what is our

  869. future inheritance?

  870. I don't think

  871. it helps anybody

  872. to speak of it

  873. in general terms.

  874. And again,

  875. it's beyond our

  876. mind's capacity

  877. to fully grasp,

  878. but we are given

  879. some information

  880. here on what

  881. we're waiting for.

  882. That's a big question,

  883. but in short,

  884. we are waiting

  885. for God

  886. to fulfill

  887. all of His promises

  888. to His people

  889. in Christ.

  890. What are we waiting

  891. for?

  892. We are waiting

  893. for the fulfillment

  894. of the promises

  895. of God

  896. towards us

  897. in Christ.

  898. So,

  899. we are waiting

  900. to inherit

  901. the promised land.

  902. We are waiting

  903. to inherit

  904. the promised land.

  905. Not a patch of dirt

  906. on the earth,

  907. but the new heavens

  908. and the new earth.

  909. As Peter says

  910. in 2 Peter 3,

  911. according to His promises,

  912. we are waiting

  913. for a new heaven

  914. and a new earth

  915. where righteousness

  916. dwells.

  917. Imperishable,

  918. undefiled,

  919. unfading,

  920. a land without

  921. thorns and thistles,

  922. a land without

  923. the presence of death,

  924. a land without

  925. the curse of sin.

  926. To enjoy

  927. this perfect paradise,

  928. however,

  929. we need

  930. to inherit

  931. resurrected bodies.

  932. We are waiting

  933. for our future

  934. glorified bodies.

  935. This is another part

  936. of our hope.

  937. Bodies that are fit

  938. for eternity

  939. with God.

  940. So,

  941. we believe that

  942. at the return

  943. of Christ,

  944. the bodies

  945. of believers

  946. will be remade

  947. and glorified

  948. and made fit

  949. for eternity

  950. in the presence

  951. of God.

  952. God.

  953. As 1 Corinthians 15

  954. tells us,

  955. what is sown

  956. is perishable,

  957. what is raised

  958. is imperishable.

  959. It is sown

  960. in dishonor,

  961. it is raised

  962. in glory,

  963. it is sown

  964. in weakness,

  965. it is raised

  966. in power,

  967. it is sown

  968. a natural body,

  969. it is raised

  970. a spiritual

  971. body.

  972. body.

  973. These bodies

  974. that we have

  975. here and now

  976. are marked

  977. by sin

  978. and death

  979. and decay.

  980. They break

  981. down,

  982. amen?

  983. Amen?

  984. But when Christ

  985. returns,

  986. we will be more

  987. alive than we

  988. have ever been.

  989. John says

  990. in 1 John

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  991. chapter 3,

  992. he says,

  993. we are God's

  994. children now

  995. and what we

  996. will be

  997. has not yet

  998. appeared,

  999. but we know

  1000. that when

  1001. he appears

  1002. we shall be

  1003. like him

  1004. because we

  1005. will see him

  1006. as he is.

  1007. Another

  1008. part of our

  1009. hope,

  1010. we are waiting

  1011. to inherit

  1012. final salvation.

  1013. This is what

  1014. Peter says

  1015. in verse 5,

  1016. the salvation

  1017. that is ready

  1018. to be revealed

  1019. in the last

  1020. time.

  1021. Final salvation

  1022. from the presence

  1023. and the power

  1024. of sin.

  1025. Final deliverance,

  1026. final salvation

  1027. from every enemy.

  1028. Final salvation

  1029. from the worries

  1030. and the stress

  1031. of this life

  1032. and the final

  1033. realization

  1034. of our salvation

  1035. in Christ.

  1036. He will wipe

  1037. away every tear

  1038. from their eyes.

  1039. death shall

  1040. be no more.

  1041. Neither shall

  1042. there be mourning

  1043. nor crying

  1044. nor pain

  1045. anymore for the

  1046. former things

  1047. have passed

  1048. away.

  1049. Our final

  1050. salvation

  1051. is realized.

  1052. But church,

  1053. as wonderful,

  1054. as glorious,

  1055. as all of

  1056. these things

  1057. are,

  1058. they are

  1059. absolutely

  1060. worthless

  1061. apart from

  1062. the greatest

  1063. treasure

  1064. of our

  1065. inheritance,

  1066. which is God

  1067. himself.

  1068. God himself

  1069. is the hope

  1070. of every

  1071. Christian's heart

  1072. to be

  1073. fully

  1074. restored,

  1075. restored,

  1076. to right

  1077. relationship

  1078. with God

  1079. our

  1080. Father,

  1081. to be

  1082. welcomed

  1083. in to the

  1084. kingdom

  1085. as his

  1086. beloved

  1087. son,

  1088. his

  1089. beloved

  1090. daughter,

  1091. to be

  1092. welcomed in

  1093. to enjoy

  1094. the glory

  1095. of his

  1096. presence

  1097. for the

  1098. rest of

  1099. eternity,

  1100. to be shown

  1101. the immeasurable

  1102. riches of his

  1103. grace and

  1104. kindness toward

  1105. us in Christ

  1106. Jesus,

  1107. to spend

  1108. eternity

  1109. day after

  1110. day after

  1111. day,

  1112. plunging the

  1113. depths of

  1114. the wonders

  1115. of the

  1116. glory of

  1117. God,

  1118. marveling in

  1119. his presence.

  1120. That's the

  1121. hope of the

  1122. Christian.

  1123. Everything else

  1124. is just icing

  1125. on the cake.

  1126. That is the

  1127. hope that fuels

  1128. present joy.

  1129. As he says

  1130. in verse 8,

  1131. though you

  1132. have not

  1133. seen him,

  1134. you love him,

  1135. though you do

  1136. not now see

  1137. him,

  1138. you believe in

  1139. him and

  1140. rejoice,

  1141. with joy

  1142. that is

  1143. inexpressible

  1144. and filled

  1145. with glory.

  1146. Do you

  1147. love him

  1148. like this?

  1149. Do you

  1150. genuinely

  1151. know that

  1152. inexpressible

  1153. rejoicing

  1154. in your soul

  1155. at the thought

  1156. of the presence

  1157. of the glory

  1158. of God?

  1159. Peter reminds

  1160. us of this

  1161. future hope

  1162. because he

  1163. knows that

  1164. future hope

  1165. breeds present

  1166. joy.

  1167. joy.

  1168. But that

  1169. rejoicing

  1170. requires

  1171. something of

  1172. us,

  1173. doesn't it?

  1174. Present joy

  1175. requires

  1176. persevering

  1177. faith.

  1178. This is the

  1179. third and

  1180. final reason

  1181. to rejoice

  1182. this morning.

  1183. Third,

  1184. rejoice in

  1185. the gift

  1186. of faith

  1187. in Christ.

  1188. Ephesians 2.8

  1189. tells us

  1190. by grace

  1191. you are

  1192. saved

  1193. through

  1194. faith

  1195. and this

  1196. is not

  1197. your own

  1198. doing,

  1199. it is a

  1200. gift of

  1201. God.

  1202. You know,

  1203. this is what

  1204. the unbelieving

  1205. world finds

  1206. so hard to

  1207. understand

  1208. about us.

  1209. They just

  1210. can't wrap

  1211. their minds

  1212. around how

  1213. could we

  1214. possibly

  1215. have and

  1216. believe in

  1217. this unseen

  1218. future hope

  1219. with so much

  1220. confidence that

  1221. we're willing

  1222. to stake

  1223. our lives

  1224. on this

  1225. hope.

  1226. How could

  1227. we possibly

  1228. believe that

  1229. someone 2,000

  1230. years ago

  1231. got up from

  1232. the dead

  1233. and because

  1234. he rose from

  1235. the dead

  1236. we have this

  1237. new life,

  1238. new inheritance,

  1239. new joy,

  1240. new purpose,

  1241. everything is

  1242. based on that

  1243. and how could

  1244. we believe

  1245. that because

  1246. he lives

  1247. he offers

  1248. forgiveness

  1249. and salvation

  1250. and reconciliation

  1251. with God

  1252. that we have

  1253. this glorious

  1254. future to look

  1255. forward to

  1256. to?

  1257. The answer

  1258. is faith

  1259. and not

  1260. the empty

  1261. objectless

  1262. faith of

  1263. the world

  1264. but the

  1265. rock solid

  1266. faith,

  1267. the gift

  1268. of faith

  1269. in the

  1270. promises

  1271. of God

  1272. fulfilled

  1273. in Jesus

  1274. Christ.

  1275. How is it

  1276. that sinners

  1277. are brought

  1278. from spiritual

  1279. death to

  1280. spiritual life

  1281. born again

  1282. from hopelessness

  1283. to a living

  1284. hope?

  1285. The answer

  1286. is this

  1287. gift of

  1288. faith

  1289. in Christ.

  1290. How is it

  1291. that millions

  1292. of individuals

  1293. throughout the

  1294. world believe

  1295. in this

  1296. unseen

  1297. invisible

  1298. hope?

  1299. The answer

  1300. is this

  1301. gift

  1302. of faith.

  1303. Faith

  1304. is as

  1305. Hebrews

  1306. tells us

  1307. it's the

  1308. assurance

  1309. of things

  1310. hoped for

  1311. and the

  1312. conviction

  1313. of things

  1314. not seen.

  1315. You see

  1316. faith is

  1317. the anchor

  1318. of our

  1319. joy.

  1320. It doesn't

  1321. let us

  1322. get swept

  1323. away by

  1324. trials

  1325. or distractions

  1326. or lesser

  1327. joys.

  1328. It anchors

  1329. us to the

  1330. source of

  1331. everlasting

  1332. joy.

  1333. Faith is

  1334. the adhesive

  1335. that sticks

  1336. us so

  1337. closely to

  1338. Christ

  1339. and all

  1340. that he

  1341. shares with

  1342. his own

  1343. that as

  1344. hard as

  1345. the devil

  1346. might try

  1347. nothing

  1348. can separate

  1349. us from

  1350. the love

  1351. of God

  1352. in Christ

  1353. Jesus

  1354. our Lord.

  1355. Faith is

  1356. the rope

  1357. that comes

  1358. down out

  1359. of heaven

  1360. to wrap

  1361. us up

  1362. as we

  1363. cling to

  1364. it tightly

  1365. and are

  1366. brought

  1367. safely home

  1368. at last.

  1369. See the

  1370. link between

  1371. future hope

  1372. and present

  1373. joy is

  1374. trust.

  1375. It is

  1376. faith in

  1377. the promises

  1378. of God.

  1379. God has

  1380. a promise

  1381. here for

  1382. you to

  1383. be believed

  1384. for your

  1385. joy.

  1386. This promise

  1387. of a glorious

  1388. future

  1389. inheritance

  1390. unseen by

  1391. the human

  1392. eye but

  1393. kept in

  1394. heaven for

  1395. you.

  1396. How can

  1397. we be

  1398. certain that

  1399. it is

  1400. actually

  1401. there?

  1402. We trust

  1403. the word

  1404. of God

  1405. by faith.

  1406. And how

  1407. can we be

  1408. certain that

  1409. a ragtag

  1410. group of

  1411. sinners like

  1412. us will

  1413. make it

  1414. there to

  1415. enjoy that

  1416. future promised

  1417. inheritance?

  1418. Maybe this

  1419. is real,

  1420. maybe that

  1421. hope is

  1422. there,

  1423. but how

  1424. can sinners

  1425. like us

  1426. possibly have

  1427. any confidence

  1428. that we

  1429. will reach

  1430. it in the

  1431. end?

  1432. Verse 5

  1433. tells us,

  1434. look there,

  1435. that you

  1436. Christian by

  1437. God's power

  1438. are being

  1439. guarded

  1440. through

  1441. faith.

  1442. when I

  1443. go somewhere

  1444. out with

  1445. my boys

  1446. and we

  1447. get ready

  1448. to walk

  1449. in the

  1450. parking lot,

  1451. nobody knows

  1452. how to

  1453. drive,

  1454. y'all know

  1455. that,

  1456. dangers are

  1457. everywhere.

  1458. And they

  1459. see some

  1460. of the dangers,

  1461. but I see

  1462. all of them,

  1463. okay?

  1464. I'm aware

  1465. of much

  1466. more than

  1467. they are,

  1468. and so I

  1469. tell them,

  1470. boys,

  1471. grab my

  1472. hand,

  1473. grab my

  1474. hand,

  1475. and they

  1476. do,

  1477. and they

  1478. exercise

  1479. trust in

  1480. me by

  1481. grabbing

  1482. my hand,

  1483. and they

  1484. hold it

  1485. willingly,

  1486. they grip

  1487. it,

  1488. their hand

  1489. grips around

  1490. mine,

  1491. but their

  1492. safety

  1493. ultimately

  1494. is not

  1495. in their

  1496. gripping

  1497. me.

  1498. Their

  1499. safety

  1500. is in

  1501. me

  1502. gripping

  1503. them.

  1504. And even

  1505. if they

  1506. were to

  1507. loosen

  1508. their grip

  1509. for a

  1510. moment,

  1511. guess what?

  1512. Mine only

  1513. gets tighter.

  1514. I hold

  1515. it firm,

  1516. even if

  1517. they yank

  1518. and try

  1519. to get

  1520. away,

  1521. my

  1522. children

  1523. make it

  1524. safely

  1525. into that

  1526. grocery

  1527. store,

  1528. I make

  1529. sure of

  1530. it,

  1531. even if

  1532. I have

  1533. to pull

  1534. them with

  1535. all my

  1536. might.

  1537. Isn't

  1538. this how

  1539. God

  1540. carries

  1541. us

  1542. through

  1543. trials,

  1544. temptations,

  1545. sufferings,

  1546. demands,

  1547. worries,

  1548. anxieties

  1549. of this

  1550. life?

  1551. He

  1552. guards

  1553. us

  1554. through

  1555. His

  1556. gift

  1557. to us

  1558. of faith

  1559. as we

  1560. exercise

  1561. trust in

  1562. Him.

  1563. He's

  1564. guarding

  1565. and

  1566. clinging

  1567. to us

  1568. through

  1569. faith.

  1570. We

  1571. believe,

  1572. but the

  1573. believing

  1574. is from

  1575. Him.

  1576. We

  1577. trust,

  1578. but the

  1579. trusting

  1580. is from

  1581. Him.

  1582. We cling

  1583. to Him,

  1584. but our

  1585. confidence

  1586. that we

  1587. will make

  1588. it to

  1589. the end

  1590. is that

  1591. by His

  1592. mercy,

  1593. He clings

  1594. to us

  1595. and will

  1596. carry us

  1597. safely

  1598. home.

  1599. Church,

  1600. this is

  1601. unshakable

  1602. power.

  1603. This is

  1604. the

  1605. stabilizing

  1606. force for

  1607. Christian

  1608. joy in

  1609. any

  1610. circumstance.

  1611. You look

  1612. here to

  1613. verse 6,

  1614. it says,

  1615. in this

  1616. hope,

  1617. you rejoice

  1618. though now

  1619. for a little

  1620. while,

  1621. if necessary,

  1622. you have

  1623. been grieved

  1624. by various

  1625. trials,

  1626. so that,

  1627. here's the

  1628. point,

  1629. the tested

  1630. genuineness

  1631. of your

  1632. faith,

  1633. more precious

  1634. than gold

  1635. that perishes

  1636. though it is

  1637. tested by

  1638. fire,

  1639. may be

  1640. found to

  1641. result in

  1642. praise and

  1643. glory and

  1644. honor at

  1645. the revelation

  1646. of Jesus

  1647. Christ.

  1648. Do not

  1649. listen to

  1650. anyone who

  1651. would tell

  1652. you,

  1653. if you just

  1654. have enough

  1655. faith,

  1656. nothing bad

  1657. will ever

  1658. happen to

  1659. you.

  1660. If you

  1661. just had

  1662. enough

  1663. faith,

  1664. if your

  1665. faith were

  1666. strong enough,

  1667. you would

  1668. not get

  1669. sick,

  1670. you would

  1671. not be

  1672. poor,

  1673. you would

  1674. not suffer,

  1675. you would

  1676. not be

  1677. tempted,

  1678. you would

  1679. not be

  1680. tried,

  1681. but listen

  1682. to God's

  1683. word here

  1684. in 1 Peter

  1685. that says,

  1686. if you

  1687. have the

  1688. gift of

  1689. genuine

  1690. faith,

  1691. nothing

  1692. bad can

  1693. ever conquer

  1694. you.

  1695. Nothing

  1696. bad can

  1697. ever,

  1698. even in

  1699. grief,

  1700. rob you

  1701. of your

  1702. eternal

  1703. joy in

  1704. Christ

  1705. Jesus.

  1706. All it

  1707. can do

  1708. is prove

  1709. the power

  1710. of God's

  1711. work in

  1712. you.

  1713. All it

  1714. can do

  1715. is lead

  1716. to the

  1717. praise and

  1718. glory and

  1719. honor of

  1720. Christ our

  1721. King as

  1722. you obtain

  1723. the outcome

  1724. of your

  1725. faith,

  1726. tested the

  1727. salvation of

  1728. your soul.

  1729. God's

  1730. love.

  1731. There's a

  1732. song that I

  1733. love by the

  1734. Gettys,

  1735. it's called

  1736. When Trials

  1737. Come.

  1738. When trials

  1739. come, no

  1740. longer fear,

  1741. for in our

  1742. pain God

  1743. draws near.

  1744. To fire a

  1745. faith worth

  1746. more than

  1747. gold, and

  1748. there his

  1749. faithfulness is

  1750. told, and

  1751. there his

  1752. faithfulness is

  1753. told.

  1754. When I am

  1755. weary with the

  1756. cost, I see the

  1757. triumph of the

  1758. cross, so in

  1759. its shadow I

  1760. shall run till

  1761. you complete the

  1762. work begun.

  1763. Till you

  1764. complete the

  1765. work begun.

  1766. One day all

  1767. things will be

  1768. made new.

  1769. I'll see the

  1770. hope you've

  1771. called me to,

  1772. and in your

  1773. kingdom paved

  1774. with gold, I'll

  1775. praise your

  1776. faithfulness of

  1777. old.

  1778. I'll praise your

  1779. faithfulness of

  1780. old.

  1781. Is this your

  1782. hope?

  1783. Is this the

  1784. hope that you

  1785. have?

  1786. Is this the

  1787. source of your

  1788. joy?

  1789. I know that

  1790. there may be

  1791. some in here

  1792. who are

  1793. hearing this

  1794. and are saying

  1795. inside your

  1796. own mind, I

  1797. just don't have

  1798. that sort of

  1799. joy.

  1800. I just don't

  1801. enjoy God

  1802. like that, and

  1803. if that's you,

  1804. you might need

  1805. to be born

  1806. again.

  1807. And it may

  1808. be that God

  1809. is even now

  1810. in hearing this

  1811. message, convicting

  1812. you of your

  1813. need for him,

  1814. convicting you of

  1815. your lack of

  1816. joy in him,

  1817. and if that's

  1818. you, I'd

  1819. invite you to

  1820. simply pray

  1821. where you are

  1822. that the Lord

  1823. would give you

  1824. the gift of

  1825. faith in

  1826. Christ Jesus,

  1827. that he would

  1828. give you the

  1829. assurance of

  1830. things hoped

  1831. for.

  1832. And it may be

  1833. that you do

  1834. know the Lord,

  1835. but just want

  1836. to grow in

  1837. enjoying him

  1838. more.

  1839. That should,

  1840. church, that

  1841. should be all

  1842. of our desire.

  1843. would you

  1844. pray that the

  1845. Lord would

  1846. remind you of

  1847. the hope he's

  1848. given you in

  1849. Christ?

  1850. Not just now as

  1851. we gather, but

  1852. Monday morning.

  1853. Would he remind

  1854. you of the hope

  1855. that you have,

  1856. remind you of

  1857. the new life that

  1858. you've been given,

  1859. remind you,

  1860. strengthen this

  1861. gift of faith

  1862. in Christ?

  1863. One day all

  1864. things will be

  1865. made new.

  1866. We'll see the

  1867. hope he's

  1868. called us to.

  1869. Church, we have

  1870. so much to

  1871. look forward

  1872. to, so much

  1873. to rejoice in.

  1874. That joy doesn't

  1875. have to be

  1876. entirely future.

  1877. We can live

  1878. in rejoicing

  1879. in the glory

  1880. of God

  1881. right now.

  1882. And as we

  1883. do so, we

  1884. will magnify

  1885. the glory

  1886. of God.

  1887. Would you

  1888. pray with me?

  1889. Lord, we

  1890. thank you

  1891. and we praise

  1892. you.

  1893. Blessed be

  1894. your name

  1895. for the hope

  1896. that you've

  1897. given us

  1898. in Christ,

  1899. for the new

  1900. life that you've

  1901. given us in

  1902. Christ, for the

  1903. gift of faith

  1904. that you've

  1905. given us, that

  1906. carries us

  1907. through.

  1908. And Lord, we

  1909. pray that you

  1910. would increase

  1911. our joy and

  1912. in doing so

  1913. that you would

  1914. increase glory

  1915. to your name.

  1916. We pray this

  1917. in Christ's name.

  1918. Amen.

  1919. Amen.
