  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of 2 Corinthians.

  2. 2 Corinthians.

  3. And as we look forward to officially constituting as a church family,

  4. we are walking through our mission and vision for the church.

  5. And so two weeks ago we sought to understand our mission as a church,

  6. which is we exist to magnify the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  7. And the vision, the how, how do we plan to go about that great mission is threefold.

  8. So we saw last week from Psalm 34, 3, the first way we plan to magnify the glory of God is to enjoy Him together.

  9. Lord willing, next week we'll gather and we'll hear the third part, which is that we plan to evangelize the lost.

  10. And this morning from 2 Corinthians, we'll see that we plan to magnify the glory of God by equipping the saints,

  11. by equipping the saints to reflect God's glory together.

  12. So if you would, your Bibles open to 2 Corinthians chapter 3.

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  13. We're going to be just in verse 18 this morning.

  14. 2 Corinthians 3 verse 18.

    2 Corinthians 3:18

  15. Bible's open if you just follow along with me as I read.

  16. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,

  17. are being transformed into the same image, from one degree of glory to another.

  18. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

  19. Amen. This is the word of the Lord.

  20. Would you please pray with me?

  21. Father, we thank you for this word.

  22. We thank you for your power of transformation at work in those who believe.

  23. We pray even now as we open up this word that you would do that in us.

  24. We pray this in Christ's name.

  25. Amen.

  26. Amen.

  27. Well, it has come to my attention that I have failed you in a very important area.

  28. Of your discipleship.

  29. During the past week, we had a couple from the church over for dinner.

  30. I won't tell you who.

  31. And they mentioned that they were in their 23rd year of marriage.

  32. To which I responded, was their Jordan year.

  33. And I thought that this was an obvious reference.

  34. But my reference was met with a confused look.

  35. And so I had to explain.

  36. I was, of course, referring to Michael Jordan.

  37. The undisputable greatest basketball player of all time.

  38. Who wore number 23 in his tenure with the Chicago Bulls.

  39. And then later with the Washington Wizards.

  40. Although we don't need to talk as much about those years.

  41. You all, I'm sure, are at least somewhat familiar with the legend of Michael Jordan.

  42. When I say that name, I know that you know at least who I'm talking about.

  43. 14-time All-Star.

  44. 5-time MVP.

  45. Defensive Player of the Year.

  46. And, of course, 6 for 6 in the NBA Finals.

  47. 6 championship rings.

  48. But, in my opinion, one of Michael Jordan's greatest accomplishments is that he is listed at 6 feet 6 inches tall.

  49. You may not know this.

  50. You can fact check me later.

  51. Nobody in his immediate family was taller than 6 feet tall.

  52. Michael Jordan's father, James Jordan, was 5 foot 9.

  53. Dolores, his mother, was only 5 foot 5.

  54. Even his brother, Larry, who Michael himself said could have been a better basketball player than him,

  55. only grew to be 5 foot 8.

  56. But, Michael Jordan, 6 foot 6.

  57. He was determined to grow.

  58. So, legend has it that he would come home every day after school,

  59. hang up his arms from the monkey bars every day,

  60. just try to let gravity do its work to stretch him out and grow as much as he possibly could.

  61. His mother, Dolores, would tell him to pour salt in his shoes every single night

  62. and say a prayer over them that he might grow.

  63. And so he did, every night, pour salt in his shoes.

  64. And I can't say exactly what made it happen,

  65. but sure enough, inch by inch,

  66. Michael began to grow.

  67. By his sophomore year of high school,

  68. he had grown to 5 foot 11.

  69. By the next summer, he had grown 4 more inches to 6 foot 3,

  70. and then ultimately growing 3 more inches to an NBA-worthy height of 6 foot 6 inches tall.

  71. This morning, we are considering again

  72. how we plan to magnify the glory of God together.

  73. And what Paul tells us here in 2 Corinthians is that

  74. we magnify his glory by growing up into him

  75. so that we might reflect his glory.

  76. And this is the type of growth that we're aiming for together as a church.

  77. Of course, we want to grow numerically.

  78. We want more people gathering here to worship alongside us,

  79. but that's not our primary target.

  80. Our primary target is growth in maturity.

  81. It is growth in Christ-likeness.

  82. It's growth that each of us individually and all of us corporately

  83. would grow to reflect the glory of God.

  84. And this is, I believe, the charge that Paul gives to pastors

  85. in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  86. This, I hope, is a familiar passage to you by now,

  87. but Paul says,

  88. He, Christ, gave the shepherds and teachers, that is the pastors,

  89. to equip the saints, that's you, for the work of ministry.

  90. What's that?

  91. For building up the body of Christ

  92. until we all attain to the unity of the faith

  93. and of the knowledge of the Son of God

  94. to mature manhood

  95. to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

  96. That's the target.

  97. That's what we're aiming for.

  98. And so the question that I want to ask this morning is,

  99. how do we get there?

  100. How do we grow up together to reflect the glory of God?

  101. So here in our passage, 2 Corinthians 3, verse 18,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

  102. this morning,

  103. Paul gives us three essential truths for spiritual growth.

  104. Three essential truths for spiritual growth.

  105. If you're a note taker,

  106. this is our outline this morning.

  107. It'll help you to follow along

  108. three essential truths for spiritual growth.

  109. First, is that spiritual growth requires spiritual sight.

  110. Spiritual growth requires spiritual sight.

  111. This is the prerequisite for spiritual growth.

  112. Look here to our verse again.

  113. Paul says in verse 18,

  114. he says,

  115. We all with unveiled face,

  116. beholding the glory of the Lord,

  117. are being transformed.

  118. So not we all, period.

  119. Everyone, everywhere.

  120. Not we all who regularly attend church

  121. and come and sit in the same place

  122. and sing the same songs.

  123. Not we all who look the same

  124. and act the same

  125. and think the same

  126. and vote the same.

  127. What does he say?

  128. We all with unveiled face.

  129. The prerequisite for you to grow spiritually,

  130. to be transformed,

  131. to reflect the glory of God,

  132. is that you have had the veil removed

  133. from over your face

  134. so that you can see the glory of God

  135. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  136. Look there to verse 13.

  137. Verse 13.

  138. To better understand what he's saying here,

  139. we need to understand the context of this passage.

  140. So Paul says here in verse 13,

  141. he says,

  142. Moses would put a veil over his face

  143. so that the Israelites might not gaze

  144. at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.

  145. But their minds were hardened.

  146. For to this day,

  147. when they read the old covenant,

  148. that same veil remains unlifted

  149. because only through Christ is it taken away.

  150. Yes, to this day,

  151. whenever Moses is read,

  152. a veil lies over their hearts.

  153. Paul is referring to the passage

  154. that was read here earlier this morning

  155. from Exodus chapter 34.

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  156. And this was a passage

  157. that would have been familiar

  158. from the Old Testament

  159. to anyone who was familiar,

  160. had a working knowledge of the scriptures

  161. there in Corinth.

  162. Moses went up to the top of the mountain

  163. on Mount Sinai

  164. to meet with the Lord.

  165. He received the words of the Old Covenant,

  166. the Ten Commandments on the tablet.

  167. And when he came out of the presence of the Lord,

  168. you remember what happened to his face?

  169. It shone.

  170. It glowed.

  171. He had been in the presence of the glory of God.

  172. And his face radiated,

  173. so much so that he had to put a veil

  174. over his face

  175. so that the people could look at him

  176. and hear and receive and listen

  177. to the words of the covenant.

  178. He had to veil it

  179. because it was too much for them to behold.

  180. But here in 2 Corinthians,

  181. Paul gives another reason

  182. why Moses wore that veil.

  183. Look there again.

  184. So verse 13,

  185. he says,

  186. Moses put a veil over his face

  187. so that the Israelites

  188. might not gaze at the outcome

  189. of what was being brought to an end.

  190. In other words,

  191. that shining, radiant face of Moses,

  192. it didn't stay that way forever.

  193. It was going away.

  194. It faded with time.

  195. It had momentary glory,

  196. but then it was normal again.

  197. Paul's primary point here

  198. is to say that this is the outcome

  199. of the old covenant.

  200. It had a type of glory for a time.

  201. It had a type of purpose.

  202. It served its purpose,

  203. but it was fading.

  204. It was going away.

  205. Its purpose was coming to an end.

  206. And so Paul says there in verse 11,

  207. if what was being brought to an end

  208. came with glory,

  209. much more will what is permanent

  210. have glory,

  211. namely the new covenant,

  212. the work of God

  213. and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  214. But there's a problem.

  215. There's a problem.

  216. This new covenant is far greater,

  217. far more glorious,

  218. far better,

  219. but the problem here for the Jews

  220. was they can't see it.

  221. Verse 14,

  222. he says,

  223. their minds were hardened

  224. for to this day

  225. in Paul's day,

  226. hundreds and hundreds of years later,

  227. to this day,

  228. when they read the old covenant,

  229. that same veil

  230. remains unlifted.

  231. They cannot see

  232. the glory of God

  233. in the gospel of Christ.

  234. They can't behold it.

  235. Their minds are hardened

  236. and their hearts are veiled.

  237. See, this veil,

  238. we need to see,

  239. is a metaphor

  240. for spiritual blindness.

  241. This veil is a metaphor

  242. for spiritual blindness.

  243. But that's not just a problem

  244. for the Jews, is it?

  245. This should sober us,

  246. church,

  247. that the Jews

  248. who were so close

  249. to the presence

  250. of God,

  251. so familiar

  252. with His acts

  253. in history,

  254. so culturally

  255. and traditionally

  256. and very intimately

  257. rooted in Him

  258. and in His Word,

  259. were blind

  260. to the glory

  261. of God.

  262. How can this be?

  263. We would be wise

  264. to note

  265. here this morning

  266. that spiritual sight

  267. is not an issue

  268. of familiarity.

  269. Spiritual sight

  270. is not an issue

  271. of familiarity.

  272. Who is more familiar

  273. with the Word of God

  274. than the people

  275. of God?

  276. Yet a veil

  277. lay over their hearts

  278. to keep them

  279. from seeing.

  280. And you

  281. may know the Scriptures

  282. inside and out,

  283. frontwards and back,

  284. may have studied it

  285. time and time again,

  286. sat under a million sermons

  287. and yet are blind.

  288. Do not mistake

  289. familiarity

  290. with the Scriptures,

  291. with faith

  292. in Christ.

  293. We would be wise

  294. to note that

  295. spiritual sight

  296. is not an issue

  297. of heritage

  298. or of physical lineage.

  299. The Jews believed

  300. that because

  301. they were physical

  302. descendants

  303. of Abraham,

  304. they were in the line

  305. of Abraham,

  306. that they were right

  307. with God.

  308. They belonged to Him.

  309. They were in the covenant.

  310. But Paul says

  311. that covenant

  312. has been fulfilled,

  313. swallowed up

  314. by a greater covenant,

  315. a new covenant,

  316. but they can't see it.

  317. They were blind.

  318. Maybe it is that

  319. you have a believing

  320. mother,

  321. believing father,

  322. grandmother,

  323. grandfather,

  324. who raised you

  325. in the word,

  326. shared the gospel

  327. with you,

  328. brought you to church,

  329. loved you,

  330. was a man or woman

  331. of the faith.

  332. If that's you,

  333. then praise God,

  334. but take note,

  335. spiritual sight

  336. cannot be inherited

  337. by blood.

  338. Do not mistake

  339. physical lineage

  340. for spiritual life.

  341. You must be born again

  342. of the Spirit.

  343. We would be wise

  344. to note

  345. that spiritual sight

  346. is not an issue

  347. of proximity

  348. to the truth.

  349. Do you ever wonder

  350. what it was like

  351. for the Jews

  352. to be there

  353. at the foot

  354. of the mountain

  355. and to know

  356. that right up there

  357. at the top

  358. was the presence

  359. of the glory of God?

  360. And to know

  361. that if I so much

  362. as come near

  363. the foot of that mountain

  364. and touch it

  365. with the point

  366. of my finger,

  367. I would be

  368. just obliterated.

  369. They were so near

  370. to the presence

  371. of God,

  372. but yet they were

  373. blind to His glory

  374. for all of their

  375. practices,

  376. all of their

  377. obedience,

  378. all of their

  379. religious culture.

  380. Sadly,

  381. so many of them

  382. did not know

  383. the Lord,

  384. and so it is,

  385. I fear,

  386. with many

  387. self-professed

  388. Christians.

  389. Christians.

  390. It's good

  391. for us

  392. to go to church.

  393. It's good

  394. for us

  395. to be

  396. in a community

  397. of believers.

  398. It's good

  399. for us

  400. to surround

  401. ourselves

  402. with Christian

  403. influence,

  404. surround ourselves

  405. with the truth,

  406. to be around

  407. the faith,

  408. but do not

  409. mistake

  410. spiritual

  411. proximity

  412. to spiritual

  413. perception.

  414. in order

  415. for us

  416. to grow

  417. in the

  418. Lord,

  419. we must

  420. behold

  421. the Lord,

  422. and in order

  423. for us

  424. to behold

  425. Him,

  426. the veil

  427. must

  428. come

  429. off.

  430. Those of us

  431. who know

  432. the Lord

  433. know exactly

  434. what I'm talking

  435. about,

  436. don't you?

  437. You know

  438. exactly what

  439. I'm talking

  440. about.

  441. I've heard

  442. so many

  443. of your

  444. testimonies

  445. over the

  446. past few

  447. weeks

  448. and months,

  449. and for

  450. many of you

  451. there was

  452. this clear

  453. moment

  454. when,

  455. for lack

  456. of a better

  457. phrase,

  458. you just,

  459. you got it.

  460. The lights

  461. just came on.

  462. Somebody shared

  463. the gospel

  464. with you,

  465. you read

  466. your Bible,

  467. you heard

  468. a message,

  469. maybe you

  470. were familiar

  471. with the truth

  472. for a long

  473. time,

  474. maybe you

  475. had gone

  476. to church

  477. for your

  478. whole life,

  479. but something

  480. different

  481. happened

  482. inside of

  483. you,

  484. and you

  485. saw the

  486. worth of

  487. Christ.

  488. All of a

  489. sudden,

  490. you saw

  491. the goodness

  492. of God,

  493. you saw

  494. your need

  495. for salvation,

  496. you saw

  497. the sufficiency

  498. of Christ

  499. to save

  500. you from

  501. your sin.

  502. What happened

  503. was God

  504. took off

  505. the veil.

  506. He removed

  507. the veil

  508. to allow

  509. you to

  510. see the

  511. glory of

  512. God in

  513. the gospel

  514. of Jesus

  515. Christ.

  516. As Paul

  517. says later,

  518. God who

  519. said,

  520. let light

  521. shine out

  522. of darkness,

  523. has shown

  524. in our

  525. hearts to

  526. give the

  527. light of

  528. the

  529. knowledge

  530. of the

  531. glory

  532. of God

  533. in the

  534. face

  535. of

  536. Jesus

  537. Christ.

  538. He opened

  539. your eyes

  540. to see,

  541. and with

  542. your eyes

  543. now open,

  544. you began

  545. to grow.

  546. You know,

  547. the most

  548. important

  549. question you

  550. can ask

  551. yourself

  552. this morning

  553. is,

  554. do you

  555. see the

  556. glory of

  557. God

  558. in the

  559. gospel?

  560. do you

  561. see it?

  562. Can you

  563. see the

  564. worth

  565. of Christ?

  566. Not

  567. physically,

  568. with your

  569. physical

  570. eyes,

  571. of course

  572. not,

  573. but spiritually,

  574. truly,

  575. do you

  576. behold the

  577. glory of

  578. God and

  579. love Him

  580. and see

  581. Him as

  582. worthy of

  583. your time,

  584. worthy of

  585. your worship,

  586. worthy of

  587. your life,

  588. worthy of

  589. your devotion?

  590. We have

  591. to start

  592. here.

  593. Can you

  594. see it?

  595. that's the

  596. beginning of

  597. spiritual

  598. growth,

  599. but what's

  600. the end

  601. of spiritual

  602. growth?

  603. What are we

  604. growing towards?

  605. What's the

  606. end goal

  607. here?

  608. This is the

  609. second essential

  610. truth for

  611. spiritual growth,

  612. and it's that

  613. second,

  614. spiritual

  615. growth

  616. restores

  617. the image

  618. of God.

  619. Spiritual

  620. growth

  621. restores

  622. the image

  623. of God.

  624. Look there

  625. to verse

  626. 18 again.

  627. Paul says,

  628. we all

  629. with unveiled

  630. face,

  631. beholding the

  632. glory of

  633. the Lord,

  634. are being

  635. transformed

  636. into

  637. the same

  638. image,

  639. from one

  640. degree of

  641. glory

  642. to another.

  643. This

  644. tells us

  645. the goal,

  646. the end

  647. goal of

  648. spiritual

  649. growth,

  650. doesn't it?

  651. What is it?

  652. It's to be

  653. transformed

  654. into the

  655. same

  656. image,

  657. that is,

  658. the image

  659. of the

  660. Lord.

  661. Every

  662. man,

  663. every

  664. woman,

  665. every boy,

  666. every girl,

  667. every child,

  668. from the

  669. moment of

  670. conception,

  671. bears the

  672. image of

  673. God.

  674. This is how we

  675. were made.

  676. This is what we

  677. see in the

  678. account of our

  679. creation in

  680. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  681. 1.

  682. God said,

  683. let us make

  684. man in

  685. our own

  686. image,

  687. after our

  688. likeness,

  689. meaning we

  690. were created

  691. to mirror

  692. or to

  693. reflect the

  694. glory of

  695. God.

  696. And so they

  697. were instructed,

  698. we were instructed

  699. to fill the

  700. earth and

  701. subdue it,

  702. to be fruitful

  703. and multiply,

  704. to fill the

  705. earth with

  706. little image

  707. bearers,

  708. which again

  709. is on the

  710. sanctity of

  711. human life

  712. Sunday is the

  713. primary reason

  714. that we

  715. denounce the

  716. horrors of

  717. abortion.

  718. We were made

  719. to reflect

  720. and to show

  721. the world

  722. what God

  723. is like

  724. in His

  725. character,

  726. in His

  727. goodness,

  728. in His

  729. holiness,

  730. in His

  731. creativity,

  732. in His reign

  733. and His rule

  734. over all

  735. things.

  736. We were made

  737. to be like

  738. God,

  739. which is what

  740. makes the

  741. devil's

  742. temptation

  743. to Adam

  744. and Eve

  745. that much

  746. more absurd.

  747. doesn't it?

  748. You remember

  749. what He

  750. said?

  751. Eat this

  752. fruit and

  753. your eyes

  754. will be

  755. opened and

  756. you will be

  757. made like

  758. God.

  759. What

  760. happened?

  761. They ate

  762. and their

  763. eyes were

  764. veiled.

  765. And the

  766. image of

  767. God,

  768. which they

  769. already had,

  770. though it

  771. remained,

  772. was now

  773. marred and

  774. broken and

  775. tarnished

  776. by sin.

  777. All of us

  778. come into

  779. the world

  780. with this

  781. messed up,

  782. sin-stained

  783. image.

  784. But here's the

  785. thing,

  786. when you are

  787. reborn from

  788. the Spirit,

  789. reborn by the

  790. grace of God,

  791. the veil has

  792. been removed,

  793. the Spirit

  794. gets to work

  795. in you,

  796. restoring the

  797. image of

  798. God.

  799. God.

  800. I want to

  801. try to

  802. reframe how

  803. you think

  804. about spiritual

  805. growth.

  806. If I can

  807. try to do

  808. that in our

  809. time together

  810. this morning,

  811. I want you to

  812. listen here.

  813. Because some

  814. of you,

  815. when you hear

  816. spiritual growth,

  817. your mind

  818. automatically goes

  819. towards self-improvement.

  820. Just being a

  821. better version

  822. of you.

  823. It goes to

  824. growing step

  825. by step,

  826. being improved,

  827. being the better

  828. version of

  829. yourself.

  830. You hear that

  831. we want to

  832. equip you to

  833. do the work

  834. of ministry,

  835. and you hear

  836. that we want

  837. you just to

  838. be your most

  839. productive self.

  840. If you go to

  841. any bookstore,

  842. just about any

  843. bookstore,

  844. go to the

  845. Christian section,

  846. which I strongly

  847. advise you not

  848. to do,

  849. and you look

  850. for a section

  851. on spiritual

  852. growth,

  853. you'll probably

  854. find a lot of

  855. this same sort

  856. of talk.

  857. That's not

  858. what we're

  859. aiming for

  860. here.

  861. That's not

  862. what this is.

  863. I hope that

  864. we see here,

  865. Paul is showing

  866. us there's

  867. something much,

  868. much bigger

  869. at play

  870. than merely

  871. bettering

  872. yourself,

  873. than merely

  874. self-improvement,

  875. than merely

  876. just working

  877. on your flaws

  878. and fixing

  879. your mistakes.

  880. Spiritual

  881. growth

  882. is transformation

  883. into the

  884. image of God.

  885. spiritual growth

  886. is transformation

  887. into the

  888. image of God.

  889. It is the

  890. work of God

  891. in you

  892. by His

  893. Spirit to

  894. restore the

  895. image of God

  896. that was dragged

  897. through the mud

  898. in the fall.

  899. And this is the

  900. plan of God

  901. for all of us,

  902. we all with

  903. unveiled face,

  904. all of us who

  905. are in Christ.

  906. Romans 8,

  907. 29 says,

  908. for those whom

  909. He foreknew,

  910. He also

  911. predestined to

  912. be conformed

  913. to the

  914. image

  915. of His

  916. Son in order

  917. that He might

  918. be the firstborn

  919. among many

  920. brothers.

  921. This is the

  922. hope of all

  923. of us who are

  924. in Christ.

  925. 1 Corinthians

  926. 15,

  927. 49 says,

  928. just as we

  929. have borne

  930. the image

  931. of the man

  932. of dust,

  933. that's Adam,

  934. we shall

  935. also bear

  936. the image

  937. of the man

  938. of heaven.

  939. That's our

  940. hope.

  941. See,

  942. doesn't that

  943. reset the

  944. standard,

  945. doesn't it?

  946. It resets

  947. the paradigm.

  948. We aren't just

  949. trying to be

  950. the best version

  951. of ourselves,

  952. we are aiming

  953. to reflect

  954. the glory

  955. of God.

  956. What does

  957. He say?

  958. Be holy

  959. for what?

  960. Help me.

  961. For I am

  962. holy.

  963. What did

  964. Jesus say

  965. to His

  966. followers?

  967. You must

  968. be perfect

  969. as my

  970. heavenly

  971. Father is

  972. perfect.

  973. That's a

  974. high standard

  975. Christian.

  976. But take

  977. heart because

  978. believer,

  979. the power

  980. for this

  981. transformation

  982. does not

  983. come from

  984. us.

  985. It can't.

  986. We can't

  987. do it.

  988. Paul says

  989. this comes

  990. from the

  991. Lord

  992. who is

  993. the

  994. Spirit.

  995. You know,

  996. there's a

  997. word for

  998. this,

  999. big theological

  1000. word called

  1001. sanctification.

  1002. Sanctification.

  1003. Our statement

  1004. of faith

  1005. concerning

  1006. sanctification

  1007. says,

  1008. we believe

  1009. that sanctification

  1010. is the

  1011. process

  1012. by which

  1013. according to

  1014. the will

  1015. of God

  1016. and through

  1017. the power

  1018. of the

  1019. indwelling

  1020. Holy Spirit,

  1021. we are made

  1022. partakers

  1023. of His

  1024. holiness.

  1025. It is a

  1026. progressive

  1027. transformation

  1028. into the

  1029. image of

  1030. Christ

  1031. that has

  1032. begun in

  1033. regeneration

  1034. and is

  1035. carried on

  1036. in the

  1037. hearts of

  1038. believers

  1039. by the

  1040. work of

  1041. the Holy

  1042. Spirit

  1043. and the

  1044. continual

  1045. use of

  1046. spiritual

  1047. disciplines

  1048. including

  1049. especially

  1050. reading and

  1051. hearing the

  1052. word of

  1053. God,

  1054. the communion

  1055. of the

  1056. saints,

  1057. self-examination

  1058. and self-denial,

  1059. watchfulness,

  1060. and prayer.

  1061. Now,

  1062. did you hear

  1063. the same

  1064. key words

  1065. that I

  1066. heard when

  1067. I read

  1068. that?

  1069. Did you

  1070. hear those

  1071. same key

  1072. words?

  1073. Sanctification

  1074. is a

  1075. process.

  1076. It is a

  1077. progressive

  1078. transformation

  1079. into the

  1080. word,

  1081. into the

  1082. image of

  1083. Christ.

  1084. It is

  1085. begun in

  1086. regeneration

  1087. and is

  1088. carried on.

  1089. You hear

  1090. that language,

  1091. don't you?

  1092. In other

  1093. words,

  1094. it does

  1095. not happen

  1096. all at

  1097. once.

  1098. I'll tell

  1099. you what,

  1100. one of the

  1101. most frustrating

  1102. things about

  1103. the Christian

  1104. life,

  1105. some of the

  1106. most discouraging

  1107. at times

  1108. moments of

  1109. this spiritual

  1110. transformation

  1111. is that it

  1112. is not

  1113. instantaneous.

  1114. It's a

  1115. process.

  1116. We are,

  1117. as Paul

  1118. says,

  1119. being

  1120. transformed

  1121. from one

  1122. degree of

  1123. glory to

  1124. another.

  1125. I remember

  1126. growing up

  1127. we had

  1128. heating and

  1129. air conditioning,

  1130. I promise,

  1131. but you

  1132. might not

  1133. ever know

  1134. it.

  1135. My parents

  1136. were so

  1137. tight with

  1138. the thermostat.

  1139. We weren't

  1140. poor,

  1141. I promise

  1142. you,

  1143. but they

  1144. would say

  1145. that they

  1146. were just

  1147. being frugal,

  1148. and I just

  1149. knew that I

  1150. was cold.

  1151. Clark

  1152. Howard made

  1153. some recommendation

  1154. about the

  1155. ideal thermostat

  1156. reading,

  1157. and it became

  1158. law in my

  1159. house.

  1160. If I had

  1161. an opportunity

  1162. just to

  1163. sneak over

  1164. to the

  1165. thermostat and

  1166. adjust the

  1167. temperature,

  1168. even by just

  1169. a couple of

  1170. degrees,

  1171. I would take

  1172. it.

  1173. Maybe an

  1174. hour would

  1175. go by,

  1176. and I'd

  1177. sneak back

  1178. again if

  1179. the plan was

  1180. working,

  1181. and bump it

  1182. up another

  1183. degree,

  1184. maybe another

  1185. two degrees,

  1186. and eventually,

  1187. without them

  1188. noticing from

  1189. one degree of

  1190. temperature to

  1191. another,

  1192. the temperature

  1193. in the room

  1194. would change.

  1195. It had to be

  1196. degree by

  1197. degree,

  1198. otherwise,

  1199. if there's

  1200. just a sudden

  1201. fluctuation of

  1202. temperature,

  1203. the whole plan

  1204. would go out

  1205. the window,

  1206. and we'd be

  1207. right back

  1208. where we

  1209. started.

  1210. See,

  1211. if you are

  1212. in Christ,

  1213. if you have

  1214. had that veil

  1215. removed from

  1216. over your

  1217. heart,

  1218. then you can

  1219. be certain,

  1220. this is what

  1221. Paul tells us,

  1222. that the

  1223. Lord is at

  1224. work in

  1225. you.

  1226. You may not

  1227. notice a sudden

  1228. swing in

  1229. temperature,

  1230. but as you

  1231. look back

  1232. over your

  1233. life,

  1234. you should

  1235. notice the

  1236. work of

  1237. God,

  1238. that from

  1239. one degree

  1240. to another,

  1241. from one

  1242. degree of

  1243. glory to

  1244. another,

  1245. you have

  1246. grown more

  1247. and more

  1248. and more

  1249. to reflect

  1250. the image

  1251. of the

  1252. glory of

  1253. God.

  1254. God.

  1255. Some of

  1256. you,

  1257. though,

  1258. I know,

  1259. are in the

  1260. middle of

  1261. a season

  1262. of just

  1263. noticeable

  1264. growth.

  1265. Maybe you've

  1266. come to

  1267. faith recently

  1268. over the

  1269. past several

  1270. months,

  1271. several years,

  1272. and you just

  1273. feel like you're

  1274. growing leaps

  1275. and bounds,

  1276. and you see

  1277. his work

  1278. everywhere,

  1279. you have

  1280. passion for

  1281. the Lord,

  1282. you desire

  1283. to grow,

  1284. you want to

  1285. know him

  1286. more.

  1287. I just want

  1288. to encourage

  1289. you to hold

  1290. on to that

  1291. as long as

  1292. you can.

  1293. Press as

  1294. deep into

  1295. that as

  1296. you possibly

  1297. can,

  1298. but know

  1299. this also,

  1300. that our

  1301. journey to

  1302. glory is

  1303. not a

  1304. sprint,

  1305. it is a

  1306. marathon.

  1307. There will

  1308. be seasons

  1309. of noticeable

  1310. growth,

  1311. tremendous

  1312. growth,

  1313. seasons of

  1314. hunger for

  1315. the Lord,

  1316. seasons of

  1317. noticing his

  1318. hand in

  1319. everything,

  1320. and there

  1321. will be

  1322. seasons where

  1323. it feels

  1324. like you're

  1325. running through

  1326. the mud.

  1327. You barely

  1328. notice his

  1329. work at

  1330. all.

  1331. Take heart,

  1332. believer.

  1333. Through it

  1334. all, the

  1335. Lord is at

  1336. work from

  1337. one degree

  1338. of glory to

  1339. another in

  1340. all who

  1341. belong to

  1342. him.

  1343. He who

  1344. began a

  1345. good work

  1346. in you,

  1347. I'm sure

  1348. of it,

  1349. Paul says,

  1350. will bring

  1351. it to

  1352. completion at

  1353. the day of

  1354. Jesus Christ.

  1355. You are

  1356. being transformed

  1357. from one

  1358. degree of

  1359. glory to

  1360. another.

  1361. But how

  1362. does that

  1363. transformation

  1364. happen?

  1365. Practically,

  1366. how does this

  1367. transformation

  1368. take place?

  1369. This is the

  1370. third and

  1371. final essential

  1372. truth for

  1373. spiritual growth.

  1374. It answers the

  1375. question for us,

  1376. how do we

  1377. get there?

  1378. Third,

  1379. spiritual growth

  1380. comes from

  1381. regarding and

  1382. relishing the

  1383. gospel.

  1384. Spiritual growth

  1385. comes from

  1386. regarding and

  1387. relishing the

  1388. gospel.

  1389. You get a

  1390. twofer here.

  1391. You get a

  1392. bonus.

  1393. Regarding and

  1394. relishing.

  1395. You might have

  1396. heard John

  1397. Piper call this

  1398. seeing and

  1399. savoring.

  1400. It's the same

  1401. thing.

  1402. You get the

  1403. point here.

  1404. You will

  1405. grow into

  1406. the image

  1407. of God.

  1408. You will

  1409. grow to

  1410. reflect his

  1411. glory as

  1412. you regard

  1413. and relish,

  1414. as you see

  1415. and you savor,

  1416. as you look

  1417. to and you

  1418. love the

  1419. glory of

  1420. God in

  1421. the gospel

  1422. of Jesus

  1423. Christ.

  1424. Look there

  1425. one more time

  1426. to verse

  1427. 18.

  1428. He says,

  1429. we all with

  1430. unveiled face

  1431. beholding the

  1432. glory of the

  1433. Lord are

  1434. being transformed

  1435. into the same

  1436. image from one

  1437. degree of glory

  1438. to another.

  1439. For this comes

  1440. from the Lord

  1441. who is the

  1442. Spirit.

  1443. So how are we

  1444. being transformed?

  1445. It's by

  1446. beholding.

  1447. Beholding the

  1448. glory of the

  1449. Lord.

  1450. See there's a

  1451. principle here

  1452. that we need to

  1453. know.

  1454. The English

  1455. poet William

  1456. Blake I think

  1457. said this first.

  1458. He got this

  1459. right.

  1460. He said,

  1461. you become

  1462. what you

  1463. behold.

  1464. You become

  1465. what you

  1466. behold.

  1467. This is true

  1468. of our

  1469. idols,

  1470. church.

  1471. Psalm 115

  1472. says,

  1473. those who

  1474. make them

  1475. become like

  1476. them.

  1477. So do all

  1478. who trust

  1479. them.

  1480. So when you

  1481. behold your

  1482. idols,

  1483. you give them

  1484. your attention,

  1485. you give them

  1486. your heart's

  1487. desire,

  1488. your heart's

  1489. devotion,

  1490. whether that's

  1491. money or

  1492. approval or

  1493. comfort.

  1494. sex or

  1495. pleasure or

  1496. entertainment,

  1497. you will become

  1498. whatever it is

  1499. that you

  1500. behold.

  1501. If you fill

  1502. your mind with

  1503. political talk

  1504. radio week in

  1505. and week out,

  1506. guess what is

  1507. going to come

  1508. out of your

  1509. heart eventually,

  1510. out of your

  1511. mind?

  1512. It'll be

  1513. anger,

  1514. discontent,

  1515. anxiety,

  1516. frustration about

  1517. the world around

  1518. you.

  1519. See we become

  1520. what we behold.

  1521. when I grew

  1522. up watching as

  1523. many Chicago

  1524. Bulls games as

  1525. I possibly

  1526. could,

  1527. putting Michael

  1528. Jordan's posters

  1529. up on my

  1530. wall and then

  1531. went out in my

  1532. driveway with my

  1533. tongue out.

  1534. I know I

  1535. looked exactly

  1536. like Michael

  1537. Jordan.

  1538. Can't tell me

  1539. otherwise.

  1540. Maybe not.

  1541. Church, if

  1542. you're hearing

  1543. this and you

  1544. wonder why your

  1545. growth spiritually

  1546. has stagnated,

  1547. why it feels

  1548. like you're not

  1549. growing at all,

  1550. you may need to

  1551. take a step back

  1552. and ask yourself,

  1553. what are you

  1554. beholding?

  1555. What is it that

  1556. you're giving most

  1557. of your heart's

  1558. attention to?

  1559. If it's not the

  1560. glory of God in

  1561. the gospel of

  1562. Jesus Christ,

  1563. turn your eyes

  1564. upon Jesus.

  1565. What does the

  1566. old hymn say?

  1567. Look full in

  1568. his wonderful

  1569. face.

  1570. The things of

  1571. earth will grow

  1572. strangely dim in

  1573. the light of his

  1574. glory and grace.

  1575. We become what

  1576. we behold.

  1577. It's true of our

  1578. idols, but church,

  1579. what a promise we

  1580. have here from

  1581. Paul in 2nd

  1582. Corinthians that

  1583. this is also true

  1584. of God.

  1585. When we behold

  1586. him, we become

  1587. like him.

  1588. John says,

  1589. we are God's

  1590. children now and

  1591. what we will be

  1592. has not yet

  1593. appeared, but we

  1594. know that when

  1595. he appears, we

  1596. shall be like

  1597. him because we

  1598. shall see him

  1599. as he is.

  1600. See, there's a

  1601. connection here

  1602. between sight and

  1603. sanctification.

  1604. salvation.

  1605. But right now, we

  1606. can't see him

  1607. perfectly as we

  1608. one day will.

  1609. So where do we

  1610. look?

  1611. We look to the

  1612. glory of God in

  1613. the gospel of

  1614. Jesus Christ.

  1615. God's glory is

  1616. displayed for us

  1617. to see and to

  1618. savor, to

  1619. regard and to

  1620. relish in the

  1621. sending of his

  1622. son to live and

  1623. to die and to

  1624. rise, to rescue

  1625. sinners like me

  1626. and you from the

  1627. depths of our sin,

  1628. and then to

  1629. transform us that

  1630. we might reflect the

  1631. image of the glory

  1632. of God.

  1633. Do you need to

  1634. have the veil

  1635. removed from over

  1636. your heart?

  1637. Look to Christ.

  1638. Only through

  1639. Christ is it

  1640. taken away, but

  1641. when one turns to

  1642. the Lord, the veil

  1643. is removed.

  1644. Do you want to

  1645. grow into the

  1646. image of God?

  1647. I hope you do.

  1648. Look to Christ,

  1649. who is himself

  1650. the very image

  1651. of God.

  1652. Do you want to

  1653. look more like

  1654. God in the way

  1655. that you think,

  1656. in the way that

  1657. you act, in the

  1658. way that you

  1659. speak, in just

  1660. the way that you

  1661. are?

  1662. Look to Christ.

  1663. Behold the

  1664. glory of God

  1665. in the gospel

  1666. of Jesus Christ.

  1667. And Christ

  1668. promises you

  1669. from one degree

  1670. to another,

  1671. you will be

  1672. changed.

  1673. So,

  1674. very practically

  1675. for us here

  1676. as we close,

  1677. God

  1678. and

  1679. I just want to

  1680. end this

  1681. morning by

  1682. sharing with

  1683. you some of

  1684. the opportunities

  1685. that we have

  1686. here as we've

  1687. thought and

  1688. prayed for how

  1689. we might equip

  1690. you to reflect

  1691. the glory of

  1692. God.

  1693. It doesn't have

  1694. to be limited

  1695. to this, of

  1696. course, but

  1697. this is

  1698. frameworks for

  1699. how we aim

  1700. to equip you.

  1701. I want you to

  1702. think of these

  1703. as just

  1704. opportunities for

  1705. us as a

  1706. church to

  1707. behold him

  1708. together.

  1709. This is not

  1710. everything.

  1711. I just want to

  1712. draw your

  1713. attention to

  1714. a few ways

  1715. here as we

  1716. close.

  1717. One,

  1718. Sunday evening

  1719. prayer.

  1720. Sunday evening

  1721. prayer.

  1722. We plan this

  1723. year to gather

  1724. Sunday evenings

  1725. on the first

  1726. and the third

  1727. Sunday of

  1728. every month

  1729. for a time

  1730. of worship

  1731. and corporate

  1732. prayer.

  1733. We had our

  1734. first one last

  1735. Sunday evening

  1736. and I just

  1737. want to

  1738. encourage you

  1739. make this a

  1740. priority.

  1741. Make this

  1742. time a

  1743. priority.

  1744. If you feel

  1745. a need to

  1746. grow in your

  1747. love for the

  1748. Lord, to

  1749. grow in your

  1750. devotion to

  1751. him through

  1752. prayer, I

  1753. got good news

  1754. for you.

  1755. We're going

  1756. to do it

  1757. twice a

  1758. month right

  1759. here Sunday

  1760. evening, so

  1761. come.

  1762. Another

  1763. opportunity is

  1764. Sunday school.

  1765. I like to

  1766. call these

  1767. grow classes.

  1768. You know

  1769. why?

  1770. Bet you

  1771. can't figure

  1772. it out.

  1773. Because that's

  1774. our goal for

  1775. that time

  1776. together.

  1777. It's that we

  1778. might be

  1779. growing to

  1780. reflect the

  1781. image of

  1782. the glory

  1783. of God.

  1784. I'll just

  1785. say this, if

  1786. you want to

  1787. know if that

  1788. is worth your

  1789. time, if you

  1790. haven't been

  1791. going, just

  1792. talk to anybody

  1793. that's been

  1794. going there.

  1795. Ask them if

  1796. it's worth

  1797. their time.

  1798. Ask them if

  1799. they've grown

  1800. at all over

  1801. the past few

  1802. months in

  1803. their time

  1804. there in

  1805. those grow

  1806. classes.

  1807. The children

  1808. are learning

  1809. so much in

  1810. their time

  1811. during that

  1812. hour as

  1813. well in

  1814. that grow

  1815. class time.

  1816. One of the

  1817. best ways that

  1818. you can grow

  1819. to delight in

  1820. the glory of

  1821. God is to

  1822. serve.

  1823. Miss Regina,

  1824. Miss Becky,

  1825. Amanda, serve

  1826. back there

  1827. faithfully.

  1828. I'll just say

  1829. this, you don't

  1830. understand anything

  1831. until you can

  1832. explain it to a

  1833. child.

  1834. Okay?

  1835. And you don't

  1836. know patience

  1837. until you can

  1838. spend time

  1839. explaining the

  1840. gospel week in

  1841. and week out

  1842. to children.

  1843. And what an

  1844. opportunity that

  1845. is to shape

  1846. and to mold

  1847. this next

  1848. generation to

  1849. delight in the

  1850. glory of God.

  1851. God.

  1852. So I invite

  1853. you to

  1854. serve.

  1855. The men

  1856. and the

  1857. women are

  1858. now gathering

  1859. weekly.

  1860. Men on

  1861. Wednesdays,

  1862. women on

  1863. Thursdays.

  1864. They're gathering

  1865. in community

  1866. that we pray.

  1867. They're studying

  1868. resources that we

  1869. pray will help

  1870. them, enable

  1871. them to grow

  1872. in delighting

  1873. in the Lord.

  1874. If you are a

  1875. man or if you

  1876. are a woman

  1877. in this room,

  1878. which is

  1879. everybody here,

  1880. you're invited.

  1881. You're invited

  1882. to come.

  1883. Take part in

  1884. these opportunities.

  1885. And if those

  1886. times don't

  1887. work for you,

  1888. let us know

  1889. what works

  1890. better so we

  1891. can start

  1892. another group

  1893. where you

  1894. can grow.

  1895. Church,

  1896. here's the

  1897. point.

  1898. If you hear

  1899. this and you

  1900. just hear a

  1901. list of events

  1902. on a calendar

  1903. to keep you

  1904. busy, you

  1905. have missed

  1906. it.

  1907. And these

  1908. are not just

  1909. things to do

  1910. because we

  1911. had nothing

  1912. else to do

  1913. and we want

  1914. to just put

  1915. something on

  1916. the calendar.

  1917. This is,

  1918. we want to

  1919. equip you.

  1920. to magnify

  1921. the glory

  1922. of God

  1923. by growing

  1924. up into

  1925. him and

  1926. reflecting his

  1927. glory together.

  1928. So church,

  1929. let's look

  1930. to Christ.

  1931. Let's behold

  1932. the man upon

  1933. the cross.

  1934. Behold the

  1935. Lamb of God

  1936. who takes

  1937. away the

  1938. sins of

  1939. the world.

  1940. Would you

  1941. behold our

  1942. God?

  1943. regard and

  1944. relish the

  1945. glory of

  1946. God and

  1947. the gospel

  1948. of Jesus

  1949. Christ and

  1950. I promise

  1951. you this

  1952. year will

  1953. grow.

  1954. Will grow.

  1955. Would you

  1956. pray with

  1957. me?

  1958. Lord,

  1959. what we

  1960. are aiming

  1961. to do is

  1962. impossible apart

  1963. from you.

  1964. I can't

  1965. do it.

  1966. Treg can't

  1967. do it.

  1968. Nobody,

  1969. nobody can

  1970. produce this

  1971. growth only

  1972. through the

  1973. Lord who

  1974. is the

  1975. spirit.

  1976. And so

  1977. we pray

  1978. as we

  1979. devote

  1980. ourselves

  1981. to these

  1982. means of

  1983. grace for

  1984. our

  1985. sanctification,

  1986. as we

  1987. devote ourselves

  1988. to your

  1989. word,

  1990. as we

  1991. devote

  1992. ourselves

  1993. to prayer,

  1994. as we

  1995. devote

  1996. ourselves

  1997. to

  1998. fellowship,

  1999. Lord,

  2000. would we

  2001. be given

  2002. eyes to

  2003. see your

  2004. glory in

  2005. the gospel?

  2006. If there

  2007. are any

  2008. here,

  2009. Lord,

  2010. who remain

  2011. hardened in

  2012. their sin

  2013. and their

  2014. minds are

  2015. blind to

  2016. your glory,

  2017. I pray

  2018. now that

  2019. you would

  2020. remove the

  2021. veil from

  2022. their heart.

  2023. And for

  2024. the rest of

  2025. us,

  2026. Lord,

  2027. would you

  2028. just give us

  2029. the grace to

  2030. notice from

  2031. one degree of

  2032. glory to

  2033. another how

  2034. you are at

  2035. work in

  2036. growing us

  2037. to reflect

  2038. your image.

  2039. We pray

  2040. this all in

  2041. the name of

  2042. Christ.

  2043. Amen.
