  1. Amen.

  2. Next week, Lord willing, as we've already said, when we gather for worship, we will gather

  3. together as Seaweed Bay Baptist Church.

  4. And as we celebrate what God is doing here, I hope that you realize we have this precious

  5. opportunity right in front of us to really clarify who it is that we feel like the Lord

  6. has called us to be and what it is that we believe the Lord has called us to be about.

  7. And so over the past several weeks, we have been walking through our mission and vision

  8. for the church, our mission statement.

  9. I'm sure you can just rattle it off by now.

  10. Feel free to speak it with me.

  11. Our mission, we exist to magnify the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  12. And the way that we plan to go about that is threefold is by enjoying him.

  13. As we gather, as we proclaim, as we enjoy and delight in his glory is by equipping the saints

  14. to reflect his glory.

  15. And as we'll see this morning in our passage, it is as we evangelize the lost and proclaim

  16. his glory.

  17. This morning, we're focusing in on that last part of our vision to proclaim the glory of

  18. God.

  19. So if you would, please open up your Bibles this morning to the book of Colossians.

  20. We're going to be in the book of Colossians this morning.

  21. And our passage is chapter one, verses 28 and 29.

  22. Colossians chapter one, verses 28 and 29.

  23. And if you would follow along with me as I read.

  24. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom that we may present

  25. everyone mature in Christ.

  26. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

  27. Would you pray with me once more?

  28. Lord, we thank you for your word and for the privilege that it is to get to open it up and

  29. to sit under it with the confidence that you will use it as you see fit.

  30. And we pray that as we hear these words from the Apostle Paul, that we would leave here encouraged

  31. and moved to go and proclaim your glory.

  32. We pray this in Christ's name.

  33. Amen.

  34. Amen.

  35. Amen.

  36. But you can tell a lot about a person by the way they read a book.

  37. People are strange.

  38. And some of that strangeness, whether you're aware of it or not, comes out in the way that

  39. they read a book and their reading habits.

  40. So for example, I wonder if you can place yourself in any of these examples.

  41. For example, there are the inaudible word mouthers.

  42. They don't know that you see it or maybe they don't care.

  43. But as they read over a book, they read over a word.

  44. They mouth the word with their lips.

  45. They move their lips.

  46. Sometimes a sound comes out.

  47. Sometimes a whisper comes out.

  48. Sometimes nothing comes out at all.

  49. But it's inaudible.

  50. They mouth the word with their mouths.

  51. There's actually a word for this.

  52. It's called sub-vocalization.

  53. That may be some of you.

  54. There are the page sniffers.

  55. Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about.

  56. Books have a certain smell.

  57. You know what that is.

  58. When you go into a library, you get that scent of a fresh book.

  59. And these are the people that they are just as happy sniffing a page of a book as they

  60. are reading the book.

  61. That may be some of you.

  62. And there are the multitaskers.

  63. These people, they can't just read one book at a time.

  64. So they have two or three or four or five or maybe even six books laying around at different

  65. places in their home, jumping from book to book, chapter to chapter.

  66. They cannot stay with one book from beginning to end.

  67. And I'll be honest with you, this one is me.

  68. It drives Amanda crazy.

  69. But worse than that, and in my humble opinion, the worst one of them all are the ending spoilers.

  70. This may be some of you.

  71. These are the sick type of people who before they even begin reading a book, they take it

  72. off of the shelf and they open it up to the very last page, read it.

  73. And so now they know what is going to happen at the end of the book.

  74. They find out how the book ends.

  75. If this is you, I invite you to let it be known.

  76. The people need to know what we're dealing with here.

  77. This is, in my opinion, completely unacceptable.

  78. But those who do this, they say that it lets them know whether or not the book is worth reading.

  79. It prepares them for any would-be surprises before they get there.

  80. But church, I cannot simply just get on board with this because even if they do decide to

  81. start reading the book, they know the end.

  82. Now they know the beginning.

  83. But they have no idea how the author plans to get them from point A to point B.

  84. As ridiculous as this is, church, this is how many Christians approach this book.

  85. The Word of God.

  86. And I'll admit, this is the one book where we should take joy in knowing the end of the story.

  87. Right?

  88. We know the ending, that God has made it clear to us one day Christ will return.

  89. And as we've been studying in Sunday school in the book of Revelation, we know at the end a great multitude that no one can number.

  90. From every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages will stand before the throne of God and magnify His glory.

  91. Saying, blessing and glory and wisdom and honor and thanksgiving and power and might be to our God forever and ever.

  92. And this group of the redeemed will enjoy eternity in the presence of God.

  93. That's the end of the story.

  94. And we know the beginning of the story, don't we?

  95. That in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  96. He created man and our first parents.

  97. They rebelled against the Lord.

  98. They sinned.

  99. They brought upon all of creation this curse of sin.

  100. And I hope that we even know the most important part of the story.

  101. The cross of Jesus Christ.

  102. That God's plan of redemption is to send His own Son to live and to die and to rise.

  103. To purchase forgiveness.

  104. To purchase salvation.

  105. Eternal life for all His people.

  106. But even still, many Christians are not exactly clear on how God plans to get us from point A to point B.

  107. But in our passage today, Paul tells us.

  108. Paul tells us.

  109. God's plan for magnifying His glory for the rest of eternity.

  110. For redeeming what was lost and broken in the fall.

  111. His plan for gathering and rescuing and transforming sinners from every tribe, tongue, and nation.

  112. His plan for bringing us from point A to point B to the end of the story is the proclamation of Jesus Christ.

  113. This is what we call evangelism.

  114. Evangelism.

  115. It's sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

  116. And it is for every Christian.

  117. In other words, we're not meant to just read this book passively.

  118. We're meant to share it actively.

  119. God has written us into this story.

  120. We have a role to play in bringing it to its end.

  121. And so this morning, as we seek to understand this great task, we're going to see three aspects of the task of evangelism.

  122. Three aspects of the task of evangelism.

  123. This is our outline this morning.

  124. If you're taking notes, I invite you to follow along with this outline.

  125. Three aspects of the task of evangelism.

  126. First, we see our role in evangelism.

  127. We see our role in evangelism.

  128. I don't want to overcomplicate this.

  129. And so here it is.

  130. Look here to verse 28.

  131. This is our role.

  132. Paul says,

  133. Him we proclaim.

  134. Him we proclaim.

  135. The plan of God for the spread of the good news of salvation to the ends of the earth is summed up right here in just three words.

  136. Do you see it?

  137. Him we proclaim.

  138. This is our role in evangelism.

  139. We, all those who have been redeemed, not just a few of us, but all of us in Christ.

  140. We are called to proclaim, that is to speak, to herald, to announce, to communicate verbally.

  141. We're to go around talking about something.

  142. And the content of our proclamation is Him.

  143. It's Christ Jesus.

  144. Him we proclaim.

  145. You see, the mission of the church, before it is anything else, is a mission of proclamation.

  146. Proclamation.

  147. And this is a mission for all of us.

  148. I've heard some of you say, several of you say, that evangelism is somewhat intimidating for you.

  149. Maybe a lot intimidating for you.

  150. You don't know what to expect.

  151. You don't know where to start.

  152. And I want you to know that I can relate to that.

  153. Okay?

  154. You are not alone in that struggle.

  155. And it's so easy, isn't it, to overcomplicate what evangelism is.

  156. It's so easy to make it more complicated than it is.

  157. But at its most basic level, evangelism is simply sharing.

  158. It's speaking.

  159. It's proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ.

  160. It is proclaiming Him.

  161. And I want you to see, that's exactly what Paul has already been doing here in the book of Colossians.

  162. If you look back to verse 15 of chapter 1.

  163. Excuse me.

  164. Verse 15 of chapter 1.

  165. Paul says,

  166. He is the image of the invisible God.

  167. The firstborn of all creation.

  168. For by Him, by Christ, all things were created in heaven and on earth.

  169. Visible and invisible.

  170. Whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  171. All things were created through Him and for Him.

  172. And He, Christ, is before all things.

  173. And in Him, in Christ, all things hold together.

  174. And He, Christ, is the head of the body, the church.

  175. Christ, He is the beginning.

  176. The firstborn from the dead.

  177. That in everything, Christ might be preeminent.

  178. For in Him, in Christ, all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

  179. And through Christ, to reconcile to Himself all things.

  180. Whether on earth or in heaven.

  181. Making peace by the blood of His cross.

  182. This is proclamation, isn't it?

  183. And He's just gushing over the beauty of Christ.

  184. He's proclaiming Him.

  185. And while I doubt that we'll sound exactly like Paul.

  186. If you know Christ, you have something to share.

  187. If you know Christ, you are capable and ready to proclaim Him.

  188. To share how glorious He is.

  189. To share how He saved you.

  190. To share how Christ alone is your hope and your peace and your joy.

  191. Our role, church, is to proclaim Christ.

  192. But sometimes, if you're like me, you might be tempted to put a burden on yourself that's heavier than what God has called you to do.

  193. For example, we need to remember our role is to proclaim Christ, not to save sinners.

  194. Our role is to proclaim Christ, not to save sinners.

  195. We can save no one.

  196. That's God's work and God's work alone.

  197. Our confidence in evangelism is not in our speech.

  198. It's not in our persuasiveness.

  199. It's not in our presentation or our ability to close a sale.

  200. We simply speak the truth.

  201. And God takes that word as it comes fumbling and bumbling out of our mouths.

  202. And He plants it into the hearts of His people.

  203. And He empowers it with His Spirit so that it bears the fruit of faith and repentance and new life.

  204. It is effective to accomplish the purposes for which He sends it.

  205. Our role is to proclaim Christ, not to know exactly who will respond in faith.

  206. I wonder if you're ever tempted with this one.

  207. It would be wonderful if I could just look out in a group of people, look out in a crowd,

  208. and see with 100% confidence exactly who it is who would come to faith if I would simply share the gospel with them.

  209. I don't have that knowledge.

  210. We don't have that ability.

  211. God alone knows whom He has appointed to eternal life.

  212. God alone knows exactly who will receive that proclaimed word and believe in faith.

  213. We don't.

  214. And so our role is simply to scatter seed as freely and as broadly and as widely as possible

  215. with the confidence that through our proclamation, the Lord will save His people.

  216. How many times do you see that word everyone here in this passage?

  217. Warning everyone.

  218. Teaching everyone that we might present everyone.

  219. See, church, God knows exactly whom He will effectively call to believe the gospel,

  220. but that belief comes through the general call of the gospel,

  221. through our proclamation as we proclaim Christ to everyone.

  222. Our role is to proclaim Christ not to be able to answer every possible objection.

  223. Now, I know some of y'all deal with this one.

  224. I wonder if some of you feel this hesitancy that I sometimes feel that,

  225. well, somebody might say something that might make me look silly.

  226. They might say something.

  227. They might ask a question that I don't know the answer to.

  228. They might give a rebuttal that I can't respond to.

  229. So hear me when I say that, yes, we should be ready to defend the faith.

  230. Yes, we should be aware of the potential objections that are recirculated every several years,

  231. but you could spend the rest of your life studying and preparing and training to answer every possible objection

  232. and still not feel ready if that's your measure for readiness.

  233. But if you know the gospel, church, you are ready to share it.

  234. And that foolishness to the world, the wisdom of God will always be foolish in the eyes of the world.

  235. But that foolish gospel is the power of God for salvation to any who believe it.

  236. But how are they to believe in him of whom they've never heard?

  237. And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

  238. Church, our role is simply to proclaim the risen Lord Jesus Christ who alone can save sinners.

  239. And Paul tells us what that looks like in two ways here, doesn't he?

  240. Two ways.

  241. Warning and teaching.

  242. We proclaim Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone.

  243. And we have to have both here, don't we?

  244. We have to have both.

  245. You see, if our message is all teaching with no warning,

  246. we may educate a lot of people on the way to hell.

  247. Now, to be saved, you must first understand the bad news of the gospel.

  248. The bad news that you have sinned against a holy God,

  249. that you are separated from him,

  250. that you are under the curse of sin,

  251. that you are hell-bound apart from the grace of God.

  252. This is not a popular message, church.

  253. I remember when I lived in Charlotte,

  254. we lived in this apartment complex,

  255. and before too long, word got out that I was training to be a pastor,

  256. training for the ministry,

  257. and so they started calling me Preacher Boy.

  258. But one guy in particular, he told me,

  259. just straightforward, he said,

  260. Hey, Preacher Boy, you can talk to me about anything you want to talk to me about,

  261. but do not talk to me about hell.

  262. Don't bring it up.

  263. Don't say it.

  264. Don't warn me.

  265. And I responded, well, okay.

  266. But you know, it's real,

  267. and I wonder just why you don't want me to talk.

  268. He said, Didn't you hear what I just said?

  269. He didn't want to hear it,

  270. and most people don't want to hear it.

  271. But unless someone warns them clearly,

  272. they will not realize their guilt and repent.

  273. See, we have to warn about the dangers of sin.

  274. Sin is eternally dangerous,

  275. and you are not safe unless you are safe in Christ.

  276. But we can't stop there.

  277. So what does Paul say?

  278. We also must teach about the glory of Christ.

  279. If our message is all warning and no teaching,

  280. you might have a bunch of very scared converts,

  281. but not mature disciples, right?

  282. They need to be taught, educated,

  283. who he is, the glorious son of God,

  284. what he's done, how he's come in the flesh,

  285. how he's lived perfectly in our place where we've all failed,

  286. how he died on the cross in the place of the guilty,

  287. in the place of sinners like you and like me,

  288. how he rose from the grave to conquer sin and death and the devil,

  289. how he stands to offer forgiveness to any who would come to him in faith,

  290. how you could be saved this moment if you turn from your sin and trust in him.

  291. For everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  292. Him we proclaim,

  293. warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom.

  294. That is our role in evangelism, church.

  295. But second, the second aspect of evangelism that we see here in this passage

  296. is our goal in evangelism.

  297. That's our role.

  298. What is our goal?

  299. Second, in verse 28,

  300. Paul says that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

  301. That's the goal.

  302. That we may present everyone mature in Christ.

  303. Now, if you're paying attention,

  304. you might say,

  305. I thought we talked about this last week.

  306. Didn't we cover that last week with reflecting the glory of God?

  307. And you would be right.

  308. We talked last week about that second part of our vision

  309. that we want to equip the saints to reflect,

  310. to grow up into the glory of God.

  311. But I want you to see these three parts of this vision

  312. are not just separated and distinct.

  313. They are all interconnected with the glory of God at the center of them all.

  314. As we enjoy Him,

  315. as we equip one another,

  316. as we evangelize the lost,

  317. they are connected.

  318. Church, we want to see people converted

  319. as we share the gospel,

  320. but we do not want to stop at conversion.

  321. Are you tracking with me?

  322. We want to see people converted as we proclaim Christ,

  323. but we don't want to stop there

  324. as if that is job well done.

  325. What do I mean by this?

  326. What I mean is that

  327. when we as a church

  328. see someone come to faith in Christ,

  329. we together, collectively,

  330. ought to be chomping at the bit

  331. to see them grow up in Christ.

  332. The conversion to Christ

  333. isn't the finish line.

  334. It's the beginning.

  335. Our goal in evangelism,

  336. as we go and share the good news,

  337. is not just to reach some moment of decision

  338. and then consider our job well done

  339. and then leave them out to dry

  340. and to figure it out themselves.

  341. I've heard far too many testimonies,

  342. far too many stories

  343. that sound something like this.

  344. I went to church.

  345. Maybe I heard a friend talk about Jesus.

  346. I was convicted of my sin.

  347. I knew I needed Christ.

  348. God gave me genuine faith in the Lord.

  349. I was saved.

  350. Then I had no place to go.

  351. Had no idea how to grow up in my faith in Christ.

  352. Nobody there to help me read my Bible.

  353. I didn't know how to pray.

  354. No idea how to put sin to death.

  355. No idea how to live the Christian life.

  356. And so for years and years,

  357. I've tried my best on my own.

  358. I've been converted,

  359. but I've not grown up in maturity in Christ.

  360. Does that sound familiar to any of you?

  361. That is not meant to be

  362. how the Christian life works.

  363. You are not meant to stay

  364. in spiritual infancy forever.

  365. And if that has been your story in church

  366. up to this point,

  367. I want us collectively,

  368. together,

  369. to change that for you.

  370. See, the church is meant to be

  371. a family of believers

  372. who are committed

  373. to locking arms together

  374. to help one another grow up

  375. in Christ

  376. until we all attain

  377. to the unity of the faith

  378. and of the knowledge of the Son of God

  379. to mature manhood

  380. to the measure of the stature

  381. of the fullness of Christ

  382. so that we may no longer be children,

  383. as Paul says

  384. in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  385. You know, I love being a dad.

  386. It's one of the greatest things

  387. that's ever happened to me,

  388. but I have learned

  389. that fatherhood is a lot more

  390. than just bringing the baby home

  391. from the hospital.

  392. And nobody in their right mind

  393. takes a newborn baby

  394. home from the hospital,

  395. just lays it in the crib

  396. and considers the job is done.

  397. They know that's just the beginning.

  398. Every parent ought to know

  399. that their goal

  400. is not just to bring a child home,

  401. but to raise a child up

  402. in maturity,

  403. to raise them to adulthood.

  404. But too many churches

  405. consider bringing the child home

  406. as the end of their duty.

  407. The same is true for us

  408. here in evangelism.

  409. We want to see new birth.

  410. We want to bring home

  411. spiritual infants

  412. as we share the good news

  413. and God gives new life.

  414. We want to see spiritual babies

  415. born into this family.

  416. But they should not remain infants.

  417. And those of us

  418. who are spiritually further along,

  419. more mature,

  420. ought to come alongside them

  421. as spiritual mothers

  422. and spiritual fathers

  423. and see to it

  424. that that child

  425. is fed

  426. and clothed

  427. and nourished

  428. and nurtured

  429. and corrected

  430. and trained

  431. and raised up

  432. in the discipline

  433. and instruction

  434. of the Lord.

  435. That's our goal

  436. in evangelism.

  437. And you know,

  438. that was Paul's goal

  439. as well.

  440. You know,

  441. sometimes Paul gets

  442. a bad rap.

  443. I don't know if you know this.

  444. He gets kind of

  445. mischaracterized a bit

  446. as this church planter

  447. who just parachutes in,

  448. plants a church,

  449. and then zips out

  450. so someone else can do

  451. all that hard pastoral work.

  452. And can I just say

  453. that that is not true at all?

  454. I want to defend Paul

  455. here for a minute.

  456. 1 Thessalonians chapter 2.

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  457. 1 Thessalonians chapter 2

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  458. shows us Paul's concern

  459. concern for every one

  460. of his converts.

  461. He says this.

  462. He says,

  463. We had boldness in our God

  464. to declare to you

  465. the gospel of God.

  466. That's proclamation.

  467. But verse 7,

  468. We were gentle among you

  469. like a nursing mother

  470. taking care of her own children.

  471. Do you hear that?

  472. So being affectionately desirous of you,

  473. we were ready to share with you

  474. not only the gospel of God,

  475. but also our own selves

  476. because you had become

  477. very dear to us.

  478. For you know,

  479. verse 11,

  480. how like a father

  481. with his children,

  482. we exhorted each one of you

  483. and encouraged you

  484. and charged you

  485. to walk in a manner

  486. worthy of God

  487. who calls you

  488. into his own kingdom

  489. and glory.

  490. Do you hear that?

  491. This is not the language

  492. of hit and run evangelism,

  493. is it?

  494. This is language of affection.

  495. This is language of love for God

  496. and love for neighbor.

  497. Do you see that?

  498. You see, evangelism

  499. with this goal of maturity in mind

  500. is an act of love for our neighbor.

  501. And when you give yourself,

  502. give of your time,

  503. give of your resources,

  504. give of your prayers,

  505. give of whatever knowledge you have

  506. to see them grow up

  507. into Christ-likeness,

  508. not just come to Christ,

  509. but to grow,

  510. that is an act of love.

  511. Congratulations,

  512. you have become a spiritual father,

  513. a spiritual mother.

  514. But it's also an act of love for God,

  515. isn't it?

  516. What does Paul say here?

  517. He says,

  518. Him we proclaim,

  519. warning everyone

  520. and teaching everyone

  521. with all wisdom

  522. that we may present everyone

  523. mature in Christ.

  524. Who are we presenting

  525. these grown-up,

  526. mature disciples to?

  527. We're presenting them to God.

  528. We're bringing them before the Lord

  529. as an offering

  530. to say,

  531. look what you've done.

  532. Look what you've done,

  533. Lord,

  534. in taking this sinner,

  535. taking this rebel

  536. who was so far from you,

  537. so deep in his sin,

  538. so blind to your glory.

  539. He was angry.

  540. He was addicted.

  541. He was blind.

  542. And you not only gave him eyes to see,

  543. but you raised him up

  544. and grew him up

  545. so that now he looks like you.

  546. And you used me to do it.

  547. Church,

  548. the greatest command

  549. is to love the Lord your God

  550. with all your heart,

  551. all your mind,

  552. all your soul,

  553. all your strength.

  554. And the second is like it,

  555. to love your neighbor

  556. as yourself.

  557. We do this

  558. when we proclaim

  559. the glory of Christ

  560. so that those who hear

  561. might believe

  562. and grow up

  563. in Christ likeness

  564. and be presented to God

  565. as trophies of his grace

  566. to the glory of God.

  567. That's the goal.

  568. But church,

  569. there is one final aspect

  570. of this task

  571. that we must understand.

  572. And I want you to hear me clearly

  573. because the task of evangelism

  574. is not easy.

  575. So third,

  576. we see the toll of evangelism.

  577. We see the toll of evangelism.

  578. You see,

  579. the Christian life

  580. and ministry

  581. and this great task

  582. of evangelism

  583. is not easy.

  584. If you were wanting me

  585. to come up here

  586. and make evangelism

  587. easy for you,

  588. I hope that you know by now

  589. I love you enough

  590. to tell you the truth.

  591. The task is very simple,

  592. but it is rarely easy.

  593. Look here to what Paul says

  594. in verse 29.

  595. Paul says here,

  596. for this I toil,

  597. struggling with all his energy

  598. that he powerfully works

  599. within me.

  600. See, evangelism

  601. evangelism

  602. and proclaiming

  603. the glory of God

  604. is hard work.

  605. A commitment

  606. to faithful gospel proclamation

  607. will require you

  608. to toil.

  609. And it may be

  610. that the Lord

  611. just chooses

  612. to radically save someone

  613. the moment

  614. you open up your mouth

  615. and speak the name

  616. of Jesus,

  617. but more often than not,

  618. it will take time,

  619. an effort,

  620. an intentionality,

  621. an sacrifice.

  622. And I know many of you

  623. have been praying

  624. and laboring

  625. for family members

  626. or friends

  627. for years.

  628. You've been toiling,

  629. laboring to faithfully

  630. share the gospel

  631. with them.

  632. Do not be discouraged.

  633. The Lord is pleased

  634. with your faithful struggle

  635. and toil.

  636. He will bring the fruit

  637. in His time

  638. according to His wisdom.

  639. Continue.

  640. The commitment

  641. to faithful gospel proclamation

  642. is often a struggle.

  643. And history will tell us

  644. that it is often costly.

  645. Just consider with me

  646. for a moment

  647. what happened

  648. to the disciples

  649. of Christ.

  650. Christ.

  651. This struggle

  652. has been experienced

  653. in some degree

  654. by every faithful evangelist,

  655. every faithful proclaimer

  656. of the gospel

  657. throughout the history

  658. of the church.

  659. The apostle Andrew

  660. went to take the gospel

  661. to what is now

  662. modern day Soviet Union

  663. and Asia Minor,

  664. Turkey,

  665. and then ultimately Greece

  666. where he was crucified

  667. for preaching Christ.

  668. The apostle Peter

  669. was crucified upside down

  670. under the emperor Nero

  671. in Rome.

  672. Tradition has it

  673. that Thomas went to India,

  674. he proclaimed the gospel there,

  675. and he was speared to death.

  676. Philip went to Carthage

  677. in North Africa

  678. in Asia Minor

  679. where he proclaimed the gospel

  680. and saw the wife

  681. of a Roman proconsul

  682. converted

  683. which angered

  684. the proconsul,

  685. got him ultimately arrested

  686. and executed.

  687. Matthias proclaimed

  688. the gospel in Syria

  689. and was burned.

  690. James also went to Syria

  691. and was beaten

  692. and clubbed to death

  693. for preaching the gospel.

  694. Simon preached Christ

  695. in Persia

  696. and was murdered

  697. for refusing to bow down

  698. and worship

  699. the sun god there.

  700. Are you encouraged

  701. to share the gospel yet?

  702. And Paul

  703. shares in 2 Corinthians

  704. how he suffered

  705. imprisonments

  706. with countless beatings,

  707. often near death.

  708. Five times I received

  709. at the hands of the Jews

  710. the forty lashes

  711. less one.

  712. Three times I was beaten

  713. with rods.

  714. Once I was stoned.

  715. Three times I was shipwrecked.

  716. A night and a day

  717. I was adrift at sea

  718. on frequent dangers

  719. and journeys

  720. and danger from rivers,

  721. danger from robbers,

  722. danger from my own people,

  723. danger from Gentiles,

  724. danger in the city,

  725. danger in the wilderness,

  726. danger at sea,

  727. danger from false brothers

  728. in toil and hardship

  729. through many a sleepless night

  730. and hunger and thirst,

  731. often without food

  732. and cold and exposure.

  733. Paul struggled.

  734. He toiled.

  735. He suffered.

  736. And ultimately,

  737. he was beheaded in Rome

  738. for the sake of proclaiming

  739. the name of Christ.

  740. You and I likely won't suffer

  741. in these ways.

  742. You might.

  743. But probably not.

  744. And definitely not

  745. if we stay silent.

  746. More likely is that

  747. we'll suffer rejection,

  748. loss of friendship,

  749. tension at home,

  750. tension at work.

  751. Certainly,

  752. you'll suffer inconvenience,

  753. hardship to your plans

  754. and your schedule.

  755. But if you hear this

  756. and you wonder

  757. how any person

  758. could possibly do this,

  759. how you could possibly risk

  760. the humiliation,

  761. the toil,

  762. the suffering,

  763. the exhaustion,

  764. even death

  765. for the sake of proclaiming

  766. the name of Jesus.

  767. Remember what Paul says

  768. here in verse 29.

  769. How can he do this?

  770. He struggles

  771. with all his energy

  772. that he powerfully works

  773. within me.

  774. If you hear this

  775. and you don't think

  776. that you have that in you,

  777. you are 100% correct.

  778. But if we are committed

  779. to the mission of Christ,

  780. we can be 100% certain

  781. that he is committed

  782. to supply us

  783. with the energy

  784. needed

  785. for the mission.

  786. Your task,

  787. church,

  788. is to proclaim

  789. the person of Christ

  790. for the good

  791. of the people of Christ

  792. with all the limitless

  793. energy of Christ

  794. for the glory

  795. of Christ.

  796. That's the task

  797. of evangelism.

  798. I want to close

  799. with these words

  800. from Christ himself

  801. to his disciples

  802. from Matthew chapter 10.

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  803. Listen to these words.

  804. Behold,

  805. I am sending you out

  806. as sheep

  807. in the midst of wolves.

  808. So be wise

  809. as serpents

  810. and innocent

  811. as doves.

  812. Beware of men

  813. for they will deliver you

  814. over to courts

  815. and flog you

  816. in their synagogues

  817. and you will be dragged

  818. before governors

  819. and kings

  820. for my sake

  821. to bear witness

  822. before them

  823. and the Gentiles.

  824. When they deliver you

  825. over,

  826. do not be anxious

  827. how you are to speak

  828. or what you are to say

  829. for what you are to say

  830. will be given to you

  831. in that hour

  832. for it is not you

  833. who speak

  834. but the spirit

  835. of your father

  836. speaking through you.

  837. Brother will deliver

  838. brother over to death

  839. and father his child

  840. and children

  841. will rise against parents

  842. and have them put to death

  843. and you will be hated

  844. by all

  845. for my namesake

  846. but the one who endures

  847. to the end

  848. will be saved.

  849. When they persecute you

  850. in one town

  851. flee to the next

  852. for truly I say to you

  853. you will not have gone

  854. through all the towns

  855. of Israel

  856. before the son of man

  857. comes.

  858. A disciple

  859. is not above his teacher

  860. nor a servant

  861. above his master.

  862. It is enough

  863. for the disciple

  864. to be like his teacher

  865. and the servant

  866. like his master

  867. if they have called

  868. the master of the house

  869. Beelzebul

  870. how much more

  871. will they malign

  872. those of the household?

  873. So have no fear of them

  874. for nothing is covered

  875. that will not be revealed

  876. or hidden

  877. that will be not known.

  878. What I tell you

  879. in the dark

  880. say in the light

  881. what you hear whispered

  882. proclaim

  883. on the housetops

  884. and do not fear

  885. those who kill the body

  886. but cannot kill

  887. the soul

  888. rather fear him

  889. who can destroy

  890. both soul

  891. and body

  892. in hell.

  893. Are not two sparrows

  894. sold for a penny?

  895. And not one of them

  896. will fall to the ground

  897. apart from your father

  898. but even the hairs

  899. of your head

  900. are all numbered.

  901. Fear not

  902. therefore

  903. you are of more value

  904. than many sparrows.

  905. So everyone

  906. who acknowledges me

  907. before men

  908. I also will acknowledge

  909. before my father

  910. who is in heaven

  911. but whoever denies me

  912. before men

  913. I also

  914. will deny

  915. before my father

  916. who is in heaven.

  917. How do you read this book?

  918. You can tell a lot

  919. about a person

  920. and you can tell a lot

  921. about a church

  922. by the way

  923. they read this book.

  924. This is not meant

  925. to just be

  926. read passively

  927. from the outside

  928. but to be lived

  929. actively

  930. to be proclaimed

  931. faithfully.

  932. What a joy it is

  933. to know

  934. that God

  935. has written us

  936. into his story

  937. of redemption

  938. not just to receive it

  939. but to proclaim it

  940. so that

  941. not only

  942. do we get to see

  943. God's plan

  944. unfold

  945. in real time

  946. but we get

  947. to play

  948. a part

  949. in bringing

  950. it to completion.

  951. We get to

  952. bear witness

  953. to the glory

  954. of God

  955. in the gospel

  956. of Jesus Christ.

  957. Do you want to know

  958. the grand plans

  959. that we have

  960. for the growth

  961. of this church?

  962. What the grand strategy

  963. is that

  964. Treg and I

  965. have been cooking up

  966. for months

  967. and months

  968. and months

  969. you want to know

  970. what it is?

  971. Him we proclaim.

  972. Him we proclaim.

  973. If this church

  974. is to be known

  975. for anything

  976. in the days

  977. and weeks

  978. and years

  979. to come

  980. let it not be

  981. for the good

  982. we do.

  983. Let it not be

  984. for the programs

  985. that we offer.

  986. Let it not be

  987. for any individual

  988. person,

  989. pastors,

  990. ministry leaders

  991. here.

  992. Let it be

  993. that in this

  994. church family

  995. we proclaim

  996. Christ.

  997. Let's pray.

  998. Lord,

  999. that's our desire.

  1000. We have proclaimed

  1001. Him this morning

  1002. and now we ask

  1003. that you would

  1004. take that proclamation

  1005. and use it

  1006. as you see fit.

  1007. But we ask

  1008. and we desire

  1009. that if there are

  1010. any here

  1011. who don't know

  1012. Christ

  1013. that right now

  1014. you would convict

  1015. them of their sin

  1016. and draw them

  1017. to faith in Christ.

  1018. And we ask

  1019. Lord for those

  1020. of us who

  1021. have been

  1022. sluggish

  1023. in evangelism

  1024. we confess

  1025. that to you

  1026. and we ask

  1027. that you would

  1028. move us

  1029. Lord.

  1030. And that we

  1031. wouldn't leave

  1032. here just

  1033. hearing a sermon

  1034. and going about

  1035. our way

  1036. but that we

  1037. would be eager

  1038. to share

  1039. who you are

  1040. and what you've

  1041. done.

  1042. We ask all

  1043. of this

  1044. in Jesus name.

  1045. Amen.

  1046. Amen.

  1047. Amen.

  1048. Amen.

  1049. Amen.

  1050. Amen.

  1051. Amen.

  1052. Amen.

  1053. Amen.

  1054. Amen.

  1055. Amen.

  1056. Amen.

  1057. Amen.

  1058. Amen.

  1059. Amen.

  1060. Amen.

  1061. Amen.

  1062. Amen.

  1063. Amen.

  1064. Amen.

  1065. Amen.

  1066. Amen.

  1067. Amen.

  1068. Amen.
