  1. Amen. Well, it is a joy to open up God's Word with you this morning as we begin a new series in the Gospel of John.

  2. And I hope that many of you grabbed one of those scripture journals on your way in. That's not just for today.

  3. Lord willing, we're going to walk through this entire gospel together over the coming months.

  4. And our hope is that you will fill those things up with notes and observations and applications to your life

  5. as we study this gospel together.

  6. So let's open up our Bibles now to the book of John.

  7. The book of John. If you are using the Bible in the pew back in front of you,

  8. if you didn't bring your own Bible, there's a Bible under your seat.

  9. And you can find this passage on page 833 of that Bible there.

  10. We always tell everyone who comes that you're going to need your Bible open.

  11. We're going to be talking from the Word of God this morning.

  12. So have your Bibles open to page 833.

  13. And we'll begin this morning with John chapter 1 verses 1 through 5.

    John 1:1–5

  14. Follow with me as I read.

  15. In the beginning was the Word.

  16. And the Word was with God.

  17. And the Word was God.

  18. He was in the beginning with God.

  19. All things were made through Him.

  20. And without Him was not anything made that was made.

  21. In Him was life.

  22. And the life was the light of men.

  23. The light shines in the darkness.

  24. And the darkness has not overcome it.

  25. Would you please pray with me?

  26. Lord, as we open up this gospel this morning,

  27. as we open up Your Word,

  28. we pray simply again that You would speak through the preaching of Your Word,

  29. that it would land on fertile soil this morning as we look to Christ.

  30. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  31. Amen.

  32. Well, a proper introduction goes a long way.

  33. I grew up just south of the city of Atlanta, Georgia.

  34. And so naturally, Chick-fil-A was just a normal part of life for us.

  35. But in my hometown, we had the extra blessing of being able to be a part of some of Truett Cathy's

  36. additional unique food experiments.

  37. So there was, of course, Chick-fil-A's everywhere.

  38. But we also had the Chick-fil-A Dwarf House.

  39. I don't know if you've ever heard of this.

  40. You can get a breakfast buffet.

  41. You can even order a hamburger or a steak, believe it or not, at the Chick-fil-A Dwarf House.

  42. There was a restaurant called Truett's Luau.

  43. Only one in the entire world.

  44. Well, Truett's Luau, where you can go get Hawaiian-themed dishes.

  45. You can get waffle fries and fish tacos at Truett's Luau.

  46. But I will never forget when Truett Cathy opened up his pizza restaurant in my hometown.

  47. It's called Upscale Pizza.

  48. So just dream with me for a minute at the prospect of getting a pepperoni pizza with Chick-fil-A service

  49. and then finishing it off with a Chick-fil-A milkshake.

  50. It was absolutely incredible.

  51. Well, I was going to meet some of my friends for the grand opening of Upscale Pizza,

  52. and it just so happened that I had had Chick-fil-A for lunch.

  53. And so I emptied the trash out from my car, gathered it up, walked up to the front door,

  54. threw my bag in the trash can.

  55. There was an elderly man there holding the door open for us as we went in,

  56. and we locked eyes, and he complimented me on my trash.

  57. He said, a Chick-fil-A man.

  58. I like to see that.

  59. And of course, I was polite enough.

  60. I thanked him for opening the door for me, but I didn't think much of it.

  61. Went inside, sat down, ordered my food.

  62. And it wasn't until after we finished, after we had sat for about an hour having a good time together,

  63. after the old man at the door had long gone,

  64. before the waitress came and cleared our table and asked us if we had had a chance to meet Mr. Truett Cathy.

  65. I said, no, I don't think so.

  66. Where was he?

  67. And she said, well, he was at the door, holding the door open as new customers came into his new restaurant.

  68. And as you can imagine, my heart just sank.

  69. I had passed right by him and not even noticed.

  70. The man who had perfected the chicken sandwich didn't invent it, only perfected it.

  71. He was a celebrity in my hometown.

  72. And at that moment, I just wished that someone would have given me a proper introduction.

  73. I wish that somebody, anybody would have prepared me beforehand, told me who he was,

  74. that someone would have prepared me for that encounter so that I could respond to him appropriately

  75. and give him the respect and the admiration and the gratitude that he deserved.

  76. Well, as we begin our time in the Gospel of John this morning,

  77. the Apostle John, the disciple whom Jesus loved,

  78. he wants to make sure that all of us are given a proper introduction to Jesus.

  79. He doesn't want us to do as so many people do and just pass right by him without recognizing who he really is.

  80. He wants us to know and to consider who Jesus is so that we might respond to him appropriately.

  81. In fact, that's exactly why he wrote this book.

  82. John tells us in chapter 20, verse 31 of the book of John.

  83. In chapter 20, verse 31, this is his purpose statement for the book.

  84. He says in chapter 20, verse 31, he's written this book,

  85. so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  86. and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  87. See, he wants to introduce us this morning to Jesus.

  88. And what we're going to see in verses 1 through 5 of this introduction this morning

  89. is that Christ Jesus is before all.

  90. Christ is before all.

  91. And because he is who he is, because he is before all,

  92. we owe him everything.

  93. So what we're going to see this morning is three ways Christ is before all.

  94. If you're a note taker, we always encourage our people to take notes.

  95. This helps us to follow along with the sermon this morning if you have a pen and paper.

  96. There are three ways that Christ is before all.

  97. First, you see, Christ is before all in time.

  98. He is before all in time.

  99. He's before all temporally.

  100. So there's four gospel accounts in the Bible.

  101. There's Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  102. And out of the four, John is the weird one.

  103. He's kind of the oddball.

  104. The first three, they call them the synoptic gospels.

  105. And that's because although they do have their own unique flavors,

  106. they often tell similar stories in similar order in similar ways.

  107. But then you get to this oddball John, and his gospel account is totally unique.

  108. But his gospel is often called the spiritual gospel.

  109. Kent Hughes, he says that Matthew emphasizes his kingship.

  110. Mark emphasizes his servanthood.

  111. Luke emphasizes his manhood.

  112. And John emphasizes his godhood.

  113. And we see some of that spiritual bent to the gospel of John here in the beginning,

  114. where Matthew and Luke both generally start with the birth of Christ.

  115. And Mark starts at the beginning of Jesus' ministry.

  116. John goes all the way back to the beginning of the beginning.

  117. And he says, as far back as you can imagine, as far back as we can trace the origin of all things,

  118. this person that I'm introducing you to here, he was there.

  119. So right off the bat, we're seeing that this man, Jesus, is not like anything else or anyone else in all of creation.

  120. He is before all of it.

  121. He is utterly unique.

  122. And he points us to that uniqueness of Jesus by calling him the Word.

  123. Look there to verse 1 with me.

  124. John says here in verse 1, he says,

  125. In the beginning was the Word.

  126. John is cluing us in here to the identity, the unique identity of Jesus.

  127. He calls him the Word.

  128. What does this tell us about who Jesus is?

  129. Well, the Word, we see here, does not have a beginning.

  130. He was there in the beginning.

  131. He's not a part of creation.

  132. Verse 3 tells us everything that was made was made through him.

  133. He was there in the beginning.

  134. And as you hear this, if you're familiar with the Bible,

  135. your mind ought to immediately jump back to the beginning of the Bible in Genesis.

  136. Genesis chapter 1, it starts the exact same way.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  137. If you're familiar with this, it says,

  138. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

  139. And as the story goes on, we see that the way God creates all things,

  140. it's not with tools or materials.

  141. He creates all things.

  142. He says, how?

  143. With his Word.

  144. That he speaks and it comes into existence.

  145. He says, let there be fish and animals and creeping things,

  146. and there they are.

  147. He says, let there be trees and flowers and plants and shrubs and bushes,

  148. and there they are.

  149. He created all things by his Word.

  150. The Word of God is his creative instrument.

  151. It's his vehicle for creating all things.

  152. And so John is intentionally drawing our minds there back to Genesis

  153. to say that this Word, this life-giving Word of God has a name,

  154. and his name is Jesus.

  155. All things were made through him.

  156. Isn't this what we saw last Sunday evening from the book of Colossians?

  157. For by him all things were created in heaven and on earth,

  158. visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  159. All things were created through him and for him.

  160. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

  161. See, the eternal Word of God creates all things.

  162. He is before all things.

  163. But you know what else it does?

  164. The Word of God also reveals.

  165. The Word of God creates, and the Word of God reveals.

  166. And really, this is how all words work, isn't it?

  167. When you and I speak in a very real way, we are communicating who we are.

  168. And so if you want to know what I think, what I feel, what I'm like,

  169. if you want to know who I am, just spend some time listening to me speak,

  170. listening to my words, and I'll tell you.

  171. And of course, you and I do this imperfectly.

  172. We often speak without thinking.

  173. We misspeak.

  174. We say things that we don't really mean, but not so with God.

  175. God's Word perfectly communicates God's heart.

  176. God does not misspeak.

  177. God's Word perfectly communicates God's will.

  178. God's Word perfectly communicates who God is.

  179. And ever since he spoke the world into existence,

  180. God has been sending forth his Word from heaven down to earth

  181. through prophets, through angels, through visions,

  182. through this inspired Word of God that we hold in our hands this morning

  183. to communicate who he is.

  184. But John says something unique here, doesn't he?

  185. He says that this man, Jesus,

  186. who I'm introducing you to this morning,

  187. is the Word of God.

  188. In other words, he says that he has been with Jesus,

  189. and he's convinced that this man is the perfect,

  190. the ultimate communication of who God is.

  191. Everything about him, not just what he says,

  192. but who he is.

  193. He is the eternal Word of God,

  194. sent forth from heaven down to earth.

  195. And he and he alone perfectly communicates who God is

  196. in a way that can be heard, yes,

  197. but now also seen.

  198. And touched and known and believed.

  199. He's telling us the one who was before all in time,

  200. stepped into time and into history,

  201. the creator of all entered into creation to reveal God.

  202. So if you want to know what God is like,

  203. look to Jesus.

  204. You look to the Word.

  205. The author of Hebrews, he says something similar.

  206. We read this passage this morning in Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  207. He says,

  208. Long ago, at many times and in many ways,

  209. God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,

  210. but in these last days,

  211. he has spoken to us by his Son,

  212. whom he appointed the heir of all things,

  213. through whom also he created the world.

  214. He is the radiance of the glory of God

  215. and the exact imprint of his nature.

  216. And he upholds the universe by the Word of his power.

  217. See, Jesus, John wants us to know he's unlike anyone you've ever met before.

  218. This is the eternal Word of God.

  219. When you trace all things back to their beginning,

  220. Jesus was there.

  221. All things are from him,

  222. so he deserves the credit and the glory.

  223. When you wonder how all things got here,

  224. it is through Jesus.

  225. All things were made through him,

  226. so he deserves the wonder and the admiration

  227. and the praise of your heart.

  228. When you wonder why all things exist,

  229. it is all for Jesus.

  230. All things in heaven and on earth,

  231. even you and me were made for him.

  232. So he deserves your entire self.

  233. For from him and through him and to him

  234. are all things.

  235. To him be the glory forever.

  236. But he's not just before all things in time.

  237. Second, we see he is before all things in being.

  238. He is before all things in being.

  239. Look there again to verse 1.

  240. And brace yourself,

  241. because this is going to get maybe a little confusing,

  242. but we're going to do this together, I promise.

  243. Verse 1, John says,

  244. In the beginning was the Word,

  245. and the Word was with God,

  246. and the Word was God.

  247. He was in the beginning with God.

  248. So we're talking about Jesus here.

  249. So John says,

  250. In the beginning was Jesus.

  251. Jesus was with God.

  252. Jesus was God.

  253. Jesus was in the beginning with God.

  254. Not only was Jesus before all things in time,

  255. he is before all things in being.

  256. This passage is some of the richest language

  257. that we have concerning what we call the Godhead,

  258. the Trinity.

  259. And it is also a theological minefield.

  260. And the early church often would go back

  261. and refer to this passage over and over and over and over again

  262. to refute several heretical teachings about who God is.

  263. We sing the song often,

  264. Holy, Holy, Holy.

  265. I know you know this song.

  266. What does it say?

  267. God in what?

  268. God in three persons.

  269. Blessed Trinity.

  270. That's correct theology.

  271. Not three gods,

  272. one God.

  273. Not one person,

  274. three persons.

  275. Not one God showing up in three different ways

  276. at three different times

  277. in three different modes.

  278. It's one holy God

  279. in three distinct persons.

  280. God the Father,

  281. God the Son,

  282. God the Holy Spirit.

  283. And you may not think that this matters too much for you.

  284. Let me tell you something.

  285. This matters more than you can possibly imagine.

  286. It matters how you think about God,

  287. how you think about the person of Jesus,

  288. because right understanding of God

  289. breeds right response to God.

  290. If we're going to rightly respond to who God is,

  291. we have to understand correctly who he is.

  292. So John here,

  293. he says,

  294. this Jesus,

  295. who I'm introducing you to,

  296. is before all things

  297. because he is before all things in being.

  298. He is God in the flesh.

  299. I see at least three essential facts

  300. about the Trinity here

  301. that we need to get.

  302. Three essential facts about the Trinity.

  303. From the beginning,

  304. the Godhead has been clearly distinct,

  305. perfectly one,

  306. and happily together.

  307. I'll say that again.

  308. From the very beginning,

  309. the Godhead has been clearly distinct,

  310. perfectly one,

  311. and happily together.

  312. All of this in just two verses

  313. packed into John's introduction here.

  314. We see the persons of the Godhead

  315. are clearly distinct.

  316. What does he say?

  317. In the beginning was the Word,

  318. that's Jesus,

  319. and Jesus was with God.

  320. There are two distinct persons

  321. represented here.

  322. The Word, who is Jesus,

  323. and God,

  324. meaning God the Father.

  325. They are distinct.

  326. And so they do different things.

  327. God the Father did not come

  328. into the world as a baby.

  329. Jesus did that.

  330. God the Father did not die on the cross.

  331. Jesus, the Son of God,

  332. did that.

  333. God the Father did not rise up from the grave.

  334. Jesus did that.

  335. So we see they are clearly distinct.

  336. But then he goes on to say

  337. that they are perfectly one.

  338. And here's where our minds can't totally comprehend.

  339. The Word was God.

  340. God, they are distinct in person,

  341. yet in some way that goes beyond our comprehension,

  342. these distinct persons are perfectly one in essence.

  343. And we need to try to track here

  344. because John is telling us

  345. what is probably the most important thing to know

  346. about who Jesus is.

  347. That he's not just another teacher,

  348. not just another religious figure,

  349. he's not just a good moral example,

  350. he's not just another leader,

  351. he's not just another prophet,

  352. he is God.

  353. I wonder if any of you have ever had a Jehovah's Witness

  354. come knock on your door.

  355. Most normal people either politely tell them

  356. they're not interested

  357. or pretend like they're not home.

  358. I am not a normal person.

  359. So I love when they come to my door

  360. and it's my goal when they come knocking on my door

  361. to show them what John is showing us

  362. right here,

  363. that Jesus,

  364. this man Jesus,

  365. is God.

  366. The Jehovah's Witnesses,

  367. of course,

  368. they disagree strongly

  369. with what I'm saying here.

  370. They do not believe

  371. that Jesus is equal with God the Father.

  372. They believe that God created Jesus.

  373. And so in their false translation of the Bible,

  374. you can look this up,

  375. they have a false translation

  376. that throws everything off

  377. with just one letter.

  378. Their version of John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  379. it goes like this.

  380. It says,

  381. in the beginning was the Word,

  382. the Word was with God,

  383. and the Word was a God.

  384. You see the difference?

  385. That one additional letter

  386. is an eternity of difference.

  387. when I was in seminary,

  388. we had to learn the basics

  389. of biblical translation,

  390. learn how to read and understand

  391. and translate biblical Greek,

  392. and I knew just enough to be dangerous.

  393. And in God's wise providence,

  394. we lived in an apartment complex

  395. right next door

  396. to the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall.

  397. And as you can imagine,

  398. they came knocking on our door,

  399. and immediately I sprung up off the couch

  400. and ran to the door,

  401. opened it up,

  402. invite them in.

  403. Come on,

  404. let's sit down and talk.

  405. And they were excited,

  406. surprised,

  407. excited,

  408. but not for long.

  409. Because I was prepared

  410. to show them

  411. and to make this

  412. the main piece

  413. of our conversation,

  414. to not let them get around

  415. this fact

  416. that the Word was not a God,

  417. the Word was God.

  418. This is John's whole point here.

  419. If you miss this,

  420. you miss the entire gospel.

  421. He doesn't just speak

  422. the words of God.

  423. He doesn't just look like God.

  424. He doesn't just sound like God.

  425. He doesn't just remind us of God.

  426. He is God in the flesh.

  427. And if He's not God,

  428. take Him or leave Him.

  429. Who cares?

  430. But if He is who John says He is,

  431. we had better pay attention.

  432. And unless you know Him as He is,

  433. and love Him as He is,

  434. and trust Him as He is,

  435. you cannot know God.

  436. John says in verse 18,

  437. if you look down on your page,

  438. no one has ever seen God,

  439. but the only God

  440. who is at the Father's side,

  441. He has made Him known.

  442. See, if this man, Jesus,

  443. is just another teacher,

  444. we might listen to Him,

  445. we might reject Him,

  446. we might appreciate Him,

  447. we might not.

  448. But if He is God,

  449. we'd better pay attention.

  450. There's a third essential fact

  451. about the Trinity that we see here,

  452. and it's that from the beginning,

  453. they have been happily together.

  454. Happily together.

  455. Twice here,

  456. John tells us that Christ,

  457. the Word was with God.

  458. He was in the beginning with God,

  459. and the Word here in English,

  460. it can't really do it justice,

  461. but it communicates a sort of movement

  462. towards one another.

  463. So from the beginning of all eternity,

  464. God has existed within Himself

  465. in perfect, all-satisfying community.

  466. Have you ever thought about this?

  467. That God the Father has always enjoyed

  468. the infinite depth of perfect,

  469. all-satisfying relationship

  470. with God the Son,

  471. and God the Spirit,

  472. which tells us

  473. that for whatever reason,

  474. God chose to create the world,

  475. whatever reason He chose to create me,

  476. and to create you,

  477. it was not because He needed us

  478. in order to be satisfied.

  479. He did not create all things

  480. in order to fill a void in Himself.

  481. He doesn't seek out relationship

  482. in order to fill a need

  483. from all time.

  484. He has been totally,

  485. perfectly satisfied

  486. in community within Himself.

  487. So why did He make you?

  488. Why did He make me?

  489. Why did He make anything at all?

  490. Many reasons.

  491. Here's one.

  492. One reason God made you

  493. is so that He might draw you in,

  494. that He might share

  495. in this perfect, limitless,

  496. all-satisfying relationship

  497. that can only be found in God,

  498. that He might share that with you

  499. for the rest of eternity.

  500. You know, that's why Christ came.

  501. The Word of God became flesh

  502. and dwelt among us,

  503. stepped into His own creation

  504. in order to redeem it,

  505. in order to bring us

  506. into fellowship with God Himself

  507. through His blood,

  508. in order to share with you

  509. and with me

  510. the limitless depth

  511. of intimate knowledge of God

  512. for the rest of eternity,

  513. that He would share with us

  514. His unending goodness.

  515. Which, church, is the third

  516. and final way.

  517. Christ is above

  518. and before all.

  519. Christ is before all,

  520. third,

  521. in goodness.

  522. Look there to verse 4.

  523. John says,

  524. In Him was life,

  525. and the life was the light of men.

  526. The light shines in the darkness,

  527. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  528. R.C. Sproul rightly, I think,

  529. observes that

  530. this is the exact opposite description

  531. of the world in which we live,

  532. isn't it?

  533. And when you look around the world

  534. at all the wickedness all around us,

  535. it's obvious, isn't it?

  536. I don't have to tell you,

  537. our world is not characterized

  538. by life and light.

  539. It is characterized by death

  540. and darkness.

  541. Things are not as they should be.

  542. You read the news,

  543. you see the headlines,

  544. you see the stories.

  545. This world is a mess.

  546. This world is in darkness.

  547. But it's not just darkness out there.

  548. We need to realize

  549. that there is darkness

  550. in you

  551. and in me

  552. that ought to tell us

  553. that something is not quite right

  554. with us.

  555. Things are not the way

  556. they should be with us.

  557. Every one of us says things

  558. and does things

  559. we ought not to say and do.

  560. If our thoughts were made visible,

  561. we'd be ashamed.

  562. All of this,

  563. the Bible tells us,

  564. is the disastrous result of sin.

  565. It is sin.

  566. It's that rebellion against God

  567. that brings the curse of death.

  568. And it is sin

  569. that corrupts

  570. and stains

  571. and darkens everything.

  572. And it is sin

  573. that blinds us

  574. to the truth

  575. and the glory of God.

  576. And until this sin problem

  577. is dealt with

  578. in each one of us,

  579. none of us can enter

  580. into fellowship

  581. with God.

  582. So where do we turn?

  583. John tells us

  584. we must turn

  585. to the one

  586. in whom there is

  587. life

  588. and light.

  589. To the word

  590. who creates

  591. and who

  592. reveals.

  593. To the one

  594. who is before

  595. all

  596. in goodness.

  597. What does

  598. Jesus say

  599. in John chapter 8?

    John 8 chapter mention

  600. He says,

  601. I am the light

  602. of the world.

  603. Whoever follows me

  604. will not walk

  605. in darkness

  606. but will have

  607. the light

  608. of life.

  609. Think back again

  610. to Genesis 1.

  611. In the beginning

  612. God created

  613. the heavens

  614. and the earth

  615. and the earth

  616. was without form

  617. and void

  618. and darkness

  619. was over the face

  620. of the deep

  621. and the spirit of God

  622. was hovering

  623. over the face

  624. of the waters

  625. and God said what?

  626. Let there be

  627. light.

  628. And there was light.

  629. And God saw

  630. that the light

  631. was good

  632. and separated

  633. the light

  634. from the darkness

  635. and Paul picks up

  636. on this theme

  637. in 2 Corinthians

  638. and he says

  639. for God

  640. who said

  641. let light shine

  642. out of darkness

  643. has shown

  644. in our hearts

  645. to give us

  646. the light

  647. of the knowledge

  648. of the glory

  649. of God

  650. in the face

  651. of Jesus Christ.

  652. Are you tracking

  653. here?

  654. He says

  655. that same

  656. light

  657. shining

  658. darkness

  659. defeating

  660. life giving

  661. power

  662. of God

  663. that we see

  664. in the beginning

  665. of all things

  666. in Genesis

  667. happens in you

  668. and happens in me

  669. when we are

  670. given eyes

  671. to see

  672. the goodness

  673. of God

  674. in the person

  675. of Jesus Christ

  676. and love him

  677. for who he is

  678. and know him

  679. and worship him

  680. for who he is.

  681. the light's

  682. come on

  683. and we are

  684. able to see

  685. we are made

  686. alive

  687. to the goodness

  688. of Christ

  689. we are brought

  690. out of darkness

  691. and into his

  692. marvelous light

  693. out of spiritual

  694. death

  695. and into his

  696. perfect

  697. eternal life

  698. that is what it

  699. means to be

  700. a Christian

  701. is that by the

  702. grace of God

  703. we see

  704. by the light

  705. of Christ

  706. that he is

  707. good

  708. that he alone

  709. is God

  710. and that he alone

  711. is worthy

  712. of your worship

  713. it's to enjoy

  714. fellowship

  715. with God

  716. through faith

  717. in his life

  718. giving word

  719. you want to know

  720. why Christians

  721. worship Jesus

  722. not just

  723. respect him

  724. or

  725. admire him

  726. but

  727. worship him

  728. it's because

  729. we have tasted

  730. and seen

  731. that he is good

  732. by the grace

  733. of God

  734. we have

  735. realized

  736. that in him

  737. and in him

  738. alone

  739. there is life

  740. and there is

  741. light

  742. well even as

  743. John introduces

  744. us

  745. this morning

  746. to the most

  747. glorious man

  748. in the history

  749. of the world

  750. he can't help

  751. but give the ending

  752. away

  753. can he

  754. he says

  755. the light

  756. has come

  757. into the world

  758. and the darkness

  759. has not

  760. overcome it

  761. the darkness

  762. cannot

  763. overcome it

  764. not for a lack

  765. of trying

  766. when Christ

  767. was born

  768. the enemy

  769. raged

  770. and sought

  771. to destroy

  772. him

  773. he sent

  774. Herod

  775. and his

  776. minions

  777. to kill

  778. him

  779. but the

  780. darkness

  781. could not

  782. overcome

  783. him

  784. and Christ

  785. was tempted

  786. and tried

  787. in every way

  788. as we are

  789. yet without

  790. sin

  791. the darkness

  792. could not

  793. overcome

  794. him

  795. he never

  796. sinned

  797. when Christ

  798. suffered

  799. and died

  800. upon the cross

  801. it looked

  802. for a moment

  803. as if

  804. the darkness

  805. had won

  806. you remember

  807. the story

  808. what happened

  809. the whole

  810. the whole

  811. earth

  812. for three

  813. hours

  814. the land

  815. was covered

  816. with

  817. darkness

  818. but we know

  819. the end

  820. of that story

  821. don't we

  822. Christ

  823. didn't

  824. remain

  825. in the grave

  826. the darkness

  827. did not

  828. overcome

  829. he rose

  830. up from

  831. the grave

  832. and he

  833. conquered

  834. sin

  835. and death

  836. and darkness

  837. for any

  838. who would

  839. come to

  840. him

  841. in faith

  842. and as we

  843. look around

  844. the world

  845. and see

  846. the effects

  847. of sin

  848. all around

  849. us

  850. know this

  851. for certain

  852. it may

  853. look

  854. for a

  855. moment

  856. as if

  857. darkness

  858. has

  859. prevailed

  860. but one

  861. day

  862. he's promised

  863. he will

  864. come

  865. again

  866. and finally

  867. put an end

  868. to all the

  869. sin

  870. all the

  871. death

  872. all the

  873. darkness

  874. in all

  875. the universe

  876. and Christ

  877. will triumph

  878. over the

  879. darkness

  880. but church

  881. the good

  882. news is

  883. if you

  884. know this

  885. man

  886. Jesus

  887. we don't

  888. have to

  889. wait

  890. if you

  891. know this

  892. man

  893. if you've

  894. met

  895. Jesus

  896. he can

  897. put an

  898. end to

  899. your sin

  900. right now

  901. there is

  902. no darkness

  903. in this

  904. room

  905. there's no

  906. darkness

  907. in your

  908. heart

  909. there's no

  910. darkness

  911. in all

  912. the universe

  913. that can

  914. triumph

  915. over the

  916. goodness

  917. of Christ

  918. so as we

  919. close the

  920. application

  921. for us

  922. here in

  923. this

  924. introduction

  925. to this

  926. man

  927. Jesus

  928. Christ

  929. is

  930. would you

  931. turn to

  932. him

  933. would you

  934. look to

  935. him

  936. for the

  937. first time

  938. or for the

  939. thousandth

  940. time

  941. would you

  942. turn to

  943. him

  944. what sin

  945. is there

  946. in your

  947. heart

  948. that needs

  949. to be

  950. brought

  951. into the

  952. light

  953. this morning

  954. what are

  955. you

  956. turning to

  957. to give

  958. you the

  959. life

  960. and the

  961. light

  962. that only

  963. Christ

  964. Jesus

  965. can

  966. provide

  967. would you

  968. turn to

  969. him

  970. again

  971. and again

  972. and again

  973. and again

  974. and taste

  975. and see

  976. that he

  977. is

  978. good

  979. church a

  980. proper

  981. introduction

  982. makes all

  983. the difference

  984. doesn't

  985. it

  986. John

  987. knew

  988. Jesus

  989. Christ

  990. personally

  991. he was

  992. an eyewitness

  993. to the

  994. things that

  995. we'll study

  996. about

  997. through this

  998. gospel

  999. he was

  1000. was eating

  1001. with Jesus

  1002. sitting with

  1003. Jesus

  1004. he was there

  1005. at the cross

  1006. and there

  1007. at the

  1008. empty

  1009. tomb

  1010. if this

  1011. man is

  1012. who

  1013. John

  1014. claims

  1015. he is

  1016. he

  1017. deserves

  1018. much

  1019. more

  1020. than just

  1021. our

  1022. passing

  1023. attention

  1024. and when

  1025. you come

  1026. face to

  1027. face

  1028. with

  1029. with

  1030. who

  1031. this

  1032. man

  1033. is

  1034. we

  1035. have

  1036. to

  1037. recognize

  1038. Christ

  1039. Jesus

  1040. demands

  1041. not

  1042. only

  1043. your

  1044. respect

  1045. but

  1046. your

  1047. life

  1048. and not

  1049. just

  1050. your

  1051. casual

  1052. acknowledgement

  1053. but

  1054. your

  1055. deepest

  1056. sincerest

  1057. devotion

  1058. he

  1059. deserves

  1060. not

  1061. only

  1062. your

  1063. attention

  1064. but

  1065. your

  1066. worship

  1067. let's

  1068. pray

  1069. Lord

  1070. Jesus

  1071. you are

  1072. good

  1073. above all

  1074. and you've

  1075. shown us

  1076. in your

  1077. word

  1078. today

  1079. that in

  1080. you

  1081. and in

  1082. you

  1083. alone

  1084. there

  1085. is

  1086. life

  1087. and

  1088. there

  1089. is

  1090. light

  1091. we pray

  1092. father

  1093. father

  1094. if there

  1095. are

  1096. any

  1097. here

  1098. who

  1099. have

  1100. not

  1101. received

  1102. the

  1103. life

  1104. of

  1105. Christ

  1106. would

  1107. you

  1108. now

  1109. open

  1110. their

  1111. eyes

  1112. to

  1113. see

  1114. and

  1115. Lord

  1116. if there

  1117. are

  1118. any

  1119. here

  1120. who

  1121. are

  1122. struggling

  1123. with

  1124. sin

  1125. discouraged

  1126. feels

  1127. like the

  1128. darkness

  1129. is

  1130. overcoming

  1131. father

  1132. would

  1133. they

  1134. turn

  1135. to

  1136. Christ

  1137. and

  1138. know

  1139. that

  1140. the

  1141. darkness

  1142. can

  1143. never

  1144. prevail

  1145. against

  1146. him

  1147. Lord

  1148. we

  1149. ask

  1150. now

  1151. in

  1152. all

  1153. things

  1154. that

  1155. you

  1156. would

  1157. be

  1158. exalted

  1159. and

  1160. that

  1161. we

  1162. would

  1163. be

  1164. changed

  1165. further

  1166. and

  1167. further

  1168. into

  1169. your

  1170. likeness

  1171. we

  1172. pray

  1173. this

  1174. in

  1175. Jesus

  1176. name

  1177. amen
