  1. Please open up your Bibles to the Gospel according to John.

  2. We're still working our way through John's prologue to his Gospel this morning,

  3. and so we'll read from verses 14 through 18 of chapter 1 this morning.

  4. If you're using the pew Bibles there in front of you, you can find this on page 833,

  5. if you're using those Bibles, but I do encourage you to have a Bible open and read these as God's Word as I preach.

  6. Follow along with me as I read John 1, 14 through 18.

  7. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory,

  8. glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  9. John bore witness about him and cried out,

  10. This is he of whom I said,

  11. He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.

  12. For from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

  13. For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  14. No one has ever seen God.

  15. The only God who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

  16. This is God's holy, inspired, perfect Word.

  17. Would you please bow and pray with me?

  18. Lord, Father, we ask again that you would do a miracle among us right now as your Word is sent forth.

  19. We pray that it would go forth in power to save,

  20. in power to convict,

  21. in power to sanctify,

  22. in power to transform,

  23. in power to encourage.

  24. Lord, would you send forth your Word

  25. and accomplish the purposes for which you sinned.

  26. We pray in Christ's name.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. Every Sunday I come home from church.

  30. I go home and catch my breath for a minute.

  31. I sit down.

  32. I thank God for all that he's done in the morning service.

  33. I go to eat some lunch.

  34. And then I prepare myself to do something incredibly risky.

  35. I ask each one of my children what they heard in the morning worship service.

  36. It's a dangerous thing to do, as you might imagine.

  37. Last week, the passage was John chapter 1, verses 6 through 13.

    John 1:6–13

  38. It was titled, I Saw the Light.

  39. And we saw from John 1, 6 through 13,

  40. how John the Baptist bore witness to the light.

  41. He was not the light, but he bore witness to the light.

  42. The true light which was coming into the world

  43. was the one that enlightens everyone.

  44. And we had a choice put before us, didn't we?

  45. Everyone on the planet has responded to the light in one of two ways.

  46. We have either rejected the light and live in darkness,

  47. or we have received the light and become children of God.

  48. That was last week.

  49. And so we sat down for lunch, and I went around the table,

  50. asked my boys one by one what they heard in church today,

  51. and one who shall remain nameless.

  52. He said, Dad, you just said the word light like a million times.

  53. And in my defense,

  54. my job is to preach what the word says,

  55. what the passage says.

  56. And John seemed to be fixated on that word, light,

  57. and so that's what came out last week.

  58. It was about the light,

  59. and so I took that as a compliment,

  60. that I was doing my job on the right track.

  61. Well, this morning, I'm afraid that we might have a similar situation,

  62. except it's not the word light that we're going to be fixated on.

  63. It's the word grace.

  64. Every occurrence of the word grace in the Gospel of John,

  65. actually every occurrence of the word grace in all the Gospels,

  66. occurs right here in these five verses.

  67. John says,

  68. We have seen His glory, that is Jesus' glory,

  69. full of grace and truth.

  70. From His fullness, we have all received grace upon grace.

  71. The law was given through Moses,

  72. but grace and truth come through Jesus Christ.

  73. I don't think you have to be a biblical scholar

  74. to be able to understand and see that

  75. John is trying to communicate to us

  76. something about God's grace here in these verses.

  77. Now, I've heard a lot of definitions of God's grace over the years.

  78. Some good and some not so good.

  79. Most would agree that grace is unmerited favor.

  80. It is undeserved blessing.

  81. And that's good and that's true,

  82. but I love how R. Kent Hughes,

  83. he gets a little bit more specific here.

  84. Listen to these definitions of God's grace.

  85. He says,

  86. Grace is God reaching out to us in our sin.

  87. He goes on.

  88. He says,

  89. Grace is the pipeline through which

  90. we receive all of God's tremendous benefits,

  91. the greatness of Christ comes by grace.

  92. The greatness of His love comes by grace.

  93. The greatness of the gospel comes by grace.

  94. Now listen to this last one.

  95. He says,

  96. Grace is God's love coming to sinners.

  97. And when you put it like that,

  98. it's no wonder why John wants us to associate

  99. the extravagant grace of God

  100. with the coming of Jesus Christ into the world.

  101. The coming of Jesus Christ,

  102. the Son of God into the world,

  103. is a spectacular extension

  104. of the grace of God to sinners.

  105. And so if you're a sinner in the room this morning,

  106. I have good news for you.

  107. God's grace is extended to you this morning

  108. in Christ Jesus.

  109. So what we'll see this morning is three ways

  110. Jesus extends God's grace to sinners.

  111. This is going to be our outline this morning.

  112. If you're taking notes,

  113. I encourage you to do so.

  114. That'll help you to follow along.

  115. We'll see three ways

  116. God's grace is extended to sinners.

  117. Three ways Jesus extends God's grace to sinners.

  118. First,

  119. in Jesus,

  120. God draws near to sinners.

  121. In Jesus,

  122. God draws near to sinners.

  123. John's aim in these introductory verses

  124. we've seen in verse 1 through 18

  125. is to show us who Jesus is.

  126. And you remember his whole purpose,

  127. his mission statement for the book of John

  128. from chapter 20,

  129. verse 31.

  130. He said,

  131. These are written so that

  132. you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

  133. the Son of God,

  134. and that by believing,

  135. you may have life in His name.

  136. That's why John wrote this book.

  137. And so,

  138. one of the ways that he is highlighting

  139. the glory and the worth of Christ

  140. is by expanding our understanding

  141. of the Old Testament

  142. in light of who Jesus is.

  143. So he wants us to know that

  144. this man,

  145. Jesus,

  146. who he's introducing us to

  147. is not just another man.

  148. He's not just another teacher,

  149. not just another prophet.

  150. He is what the Old Testament

  151. has been pushing us towards all along,

  152. has been telling us about all along,

  153. has been pointing us to all along.

  154. So you remember from verses 1 through 4,

  155. at the beginning,

  156. he connected the dots for us

  157. from this man, Jesus,

  158. to the book of Genesis.

  159. You remember this.

  160. John 1 begins by saying,

  161. In the beginning was the Word.

  162. And the Word was with God.

  163. And the Word was God.

  164. He was in the beginning with God.

  165. And of course,

  166. as you hear this,

  167. your mind ought to be going back

  168. towards the beginning of the Bible.

  169. Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  170. in the beginning.

  171. That link,

  172. that connection

  173. that John is making here

  174. is telling us

  175. that Jesus is not just another creature,

  176. he is the creator.

  177. But in our passage today,

  178. he's making another connection for us,

  179. starting here in verse 14.

  180. Look there with me.

  181. Starting in verse 14,

  182. John connects the dots for us

  183. from this man, Jesus,

  184. to the book of Exodus.

  185. John says in 14,

  186. look there,

  187. The Word became flesh

  188. and dwelt among us.

  189. This should astound us.

  190. The eternal Word of God,

  191. the one through whom

  192. all things were created,

  193. became flesh

  194. and dwelt among us.

  195. He says,

  196. although he is

  197. in a different category from us,

  198. he is totally distinct from creation,

  199. yet he willingly chooses

  200. not to be distant from creation.

  201. He chooses to step into it

  202. to draw near to sinners.

  203. That should astound us.

  204. But if you know your Old Testament,

  205. this image becomes even more astounding

  206. because literally what this says

  207. in the original language here,

  208. what it says is that

  209. the Word became flesh

  210. and pitched a tent.

  211. or the Word became flesh

  212. and tabernacled among us.

  213. See, John is connecting the dots for us

  214. between Jesus,

  215. this man that he's introducing us to,

  216. and the tabernacle of the Old Testament.

  217. A couple years ago,

  218. we were serving at a church up the road

  219. in North Myrtle Beach,

  220. and our church was preaching

  221. through the book of Exodus,

  222. and we realized pretty quickly

  223. that the first half of Exodus

  224. preaches a little bit differently

  225. than the second half of Exodus.

  226. So you have all the stories

  227. of deliverance and the plagues

  228. and all the excitement

  229. and all the action in the first half,

  230. and then you get to the second half

  231. and you have the law,

  232. the instructions,

  233. the details,

  234. the procedures in the second half.

  235. The first half reads

  236. kind of like a Hollywood script,

  237. and the second half

  238. kind of reads like an instruction manual.

  239. That's just how it is.

  240. Now, all Scripture is God-breathed,

  241. so let the record show.

  242. Don't get me wrong.

  243. It's all God's Word,

  244. but we'll just be honest.

  245. Most of us are naturally drawn

  246. towards the narrative

  247. more than we are to the instruction.

  248. It's just our nature.

  249. Some passages of Scripture

  250. are more easily digested than others,

  251. and some passages of Scripture

  252. are more easily preached than others.

  253. Well, as we laid out our preaching plan,

  254. my turn to preach came,

  255. and we realized that my text

  256. was going to be Exodus chapter 25

    Exodus 25 chapter mention

  257. and 26 and 27.

  258. Three chapters worth of instructions

  259. and details and procedures

  260. for the sanctuary,

  261. for the ark,

  262. for the table of bread,

  263. for the golden lampstand,

  264. for the bronze altar,

  265. for the oil,

  266. for the lamp,

  267. for the curtain,

  268. and for the tabernacle.

  269. And I'll be honest.

  270. At first, I was overwhelmed,

  271. and I didn't know

  272. what in the world

  273. would I have to preach

  274. about from three chapters

  275. of tedious instruction.

  276. But as I dug in,

  277. here's what I learned.

  278. For one,

  279. God cares about the details.

  280. You know, that should be obvious.

  281. I mean, my goodness,

  282. every little detail

  283. was described,

  284. and in order,

  285. from the dimensions

  286. to the materials

  287. to the arrangement

  288. to the colors

  289. to the number of loops

  290. on the edge of the curtains,

  291. everything had to be

  292. exactly as God prescribed

  293. because all of it

  294. was a visible lesson

  295. for the Israelites

  296. about the holiness of God

  297. and the sinfulness of man.

  298. So this tabernacle,

  299. this tent in the wilderness,

  300. was where sinful man

  301. came to meet with a holy God.

  302. And they had to be shown visibly

  303. that this was no casual task.

  304. So every detail was there

  305. to condescend

  306. and to communicate

  307. to our senses

  308. the reverence

  309. that we ought to have

  310. when we enter

  311. into the presence

  312. of God.

  313. Of course, you know,

  314. inside the tabernacle

  315. behind the curtain

  316. was the most holy place

  317. where the Ark of the Covenant

  318. was kept,

  319. and it was there

  320. that God's presence

  321. dwelled in a tent.

  322. God wanted His people

  323. to know

  324. that there was a clear division

  325. between them

  326. and their sinfulness

  327. and God

  328. and His holiness.

  329. But you know what else

  330. I learned from the tabernacle?

  331. Despite this great distance,

  332. God wants to draw near

  333. to sinners.

  334. God wants to draw near

  335. to sinners.

  336. This whole elaborate system

  337. with all the procedures

  338. and details,

  339. it wasn't just

  340. to give the Israelites

  341. something to do

  342. and to be overly complicated

  343. for the sake

  344. of being complicated.

  345. No, this was God's way

  346. to dwell with man.

  347. And it was His initiative.

  348. God didn't have to manifest

  349. His presence among them.

  350. He didn't have to receive

  351. their sacrifices

  352. and their worship.

  353. He didn't have to allow them

  354. even the smallest sense

  355. of His presence

  356. and holiness,

  357. but He did

  358. because He wanted

  359. to draw near

  360. to sinners.

  361. So He says

  362. in Exodus 25,

    Exodus 25:8

  363. verse 8,

  364. He says,

  365. Let them make me

  366. a sanctuary.

  367. Here's the purpose.

  368. That I may dwell

  369. in their midst.

  370. Consider the heart of God

  371. for a moment.

  372. The Lord saw

  373. the plight

  374. of His people

  375. suffering,

  376. wandering

  377. in the wilderness,

  378. homeless,

  379. poor,

  380. weak,

  381. undeserving.

  382. And you know what He says?

  383. Y'all build me a tent

  384. so I can go be with you

  385. wherever you go.

  386. And this was God-initiated grace.

  387. And John says

  388. that is exactly

  389. what is happening here

  390. in the coming of Jesus Christ

  391. into the world.

  392. Jesus Christ

  393. is the fulfillment,

  394. the full realization

  395. of everything

  396. that the tabernacle

  397. was supposed to be.

  398. Jesus Christ,

  399. He is where God

  400. and man meet together.

  401. He is where God

  402. comes down to earth

  403. to be known

  404. and to be worshipped.

  405. The beauty of His character,

  406. the beauty of His words,

  407. the beauty of His actions,

  408. they communicate to us

  409. who God is.

  410. Jesus,

  411. He is where sacrifice

  412. is offered

  413. that's pleasing to God.

  414. He is where

  415. the presence of God

  416. can be known

  417. not just by a few

  418. but by any

  419. who come to Him

  420. in faith.

  421. Oh,

  422. the humility

  423. of the Son of God,

  424. the humility

  425. and the grace

  426. of Jesus Christ

  427. to leave

  428. the glory of heaven

  429. and to become human,

  430. to willingly

  431. choose

  432. to dwell

  433. in this

  434. tattered tent

  435. of a body

  436. that can be

  437. ripped

  438. and broken

  439. and beaten

  440. and stained

  441. and drugged

  442. through the mud

  443. not because

  444. we're worthy of it

  445. but because

  446. He is full

  447. of grace

  448. towards sinners

  449. and He wants

  450. to dwell

  451. with us.

  452. Second,

  453. John shows us

  454. another way

  455. that Christ

  456. extends the grace

  457. of God

  458. to sinners.

  459. Second,

  460. in Jesus

  461. sinners

  462. see the glory

  463. of God.

  464. In Jesus

  465. sinners

  466. see the glory

  467. of God.

  468. John continues

  469. verse 14,

  470. look there,

  471. the word

  472. became flesh

  473. and dwelt

  474. among us

  475. and we have

  476. seen His glory

  477. glory as of

  478. the only Son

  479. from the Father

  480. full of grace

  481. and truth.

  482. In Christ

  483. we have

  484. seen

  485. the glory

  486. of God

  487. and again

  488. this should

  489. just astound us

  490. especially if we know

  491. our Old Testament.

  492. As you know

  493. throughout the Old Testament

  494. the glory of God

  495. we see glimpses

  496. of His glory

  497. He manifest His glory

  498. as a pillar of cloud

  499. by day

  500. a pillar of fire

  501. by night

  502. you know how

  503. Moses went to go

  504. speak with God

  505. on top of the mountain

  506. and He came down

  507. and His face was radiant

  508. from spending time

  509. in the glory of God

  510. but even these

  511. were just partial

  512. manifestations

  513. of the glory of God

  514. they were

  515. limited

  516. that God

  517. restrained

  518. He held back

  519. the fullness

  520. of His glory

  521. because

  522. sinners like us

  523. cannot see Him

  524. and live

  525. isn't that what we read

  526. in our scripture reading

  527. this morning

  528. Sean read

  529. from Exodus 33

  530. Moses asked the Lord

  531. to show me

  532. your glory

  533. how did God respond?

  534. He said

  535. I will show you

  536. my goodness

  537. I will proclaim

  538. to you my name

  539. I will proclaim

  540. my steadfast love

  541. and my faithfulness

  542. I will place you

  543. safely

  544. in the cleft

  545. of the rock

  546. I will cover you

  547. with my hand

  548. but you cannot

  549. see my face

  550. for man shall not

  551. see me

  552. and live

  553. no one

  554. can see the fullness

  555. of God's glory

  556. and live

  557. that request

  558. show me your glory

  559. that's a bold

  560. and dangerous

  561. request

  562. for sinners

  563. to make

  564. there's a Jewish

  565. tradition

  566. that says

  567. that

  568. when the high priest

  569. would go into

  570. the holy of holies

  571. inside the tabernacle

  572. on the day of atonement

  573. he was the only one

  574. allowed to go in

  575. he would enter in

  576. with a rope

  577. tied around his foot

  578. and bells tied

  579. around his waist

  580. why?

  581. because he was a sinner

  582. entering into

  583. the presence

  584. of God

  585. and in the event

  586. that his sins

  587. were not properly

  588. atoned for

  589. when he went

  590. into the presence

  591. of God

  592. since he was

  593. the only one

  594. allowed to go

  595. into the room

  596. if he were

  597. struck down

  598. in the presence

  599. of the glory

  600. of God

  601. they would hear

  602. the bells jingle

  603. and be able to

  604. by the rope

  605. pull his body

  606. out of

  607. the room

  608. the glory

  609. of God

  610. is too much

  611. it's too holy

  612. for sinners

  613. like us

  614. to be able

  615. to take in

  616. it's a danger

  617. for sinners

  618. like us

  619. to be in

  620. the presence

  621. of God

  622. but John

  623. says

  624. this man

  625. Jesus

  626. has come

  627. onto the scene

  628. and we have

  629. in him

  630. seen

  631. the glory

  632. of God

  633. more clearly

  634. than a pillar

  635. of cloud

  636. more clearly

  637. than a pillar

  638. of fire

  639. God's glory

  640. has come

  641. down to us

  642. wrapped himself

  643. up in human

  644. flesh

  645. in a way

  646. that can be

  647. seen

  648. and touched

  649. Jesus came

  650. that in him

  651. unworthy

  652. sinners

  653. from every

  654. tribe

  655. tongue

  656. and nation

  657. might see

  658. the glory

  659. of God

  660. I wonder

  661. if you

  662. see him

  663. I wonder

  664. if you see

  665. the glory

  666. of God

  667. you know

  668. one of the

  669. atheists

  670. favorite arguments

  671. against the glory

  672. against the existence

  673. of God

  674. is that we have

  675. never seen him

  676. Yuri Gagarin

  677. he's the very

  678. he's the first

  679. Russian cosmonaut

  680. launched into space

  681. in 1961

  682. he famously said

  683. well I don't see

  684. any God

  685. out here

  686. we read

  687. in our men's

  688. group this week

  689. a story about

  690. Saint Augustine

  691. a pagan man

  692. brought

  693. Saint Augustine

  694. an idol

  695. one of his idols

  696. he held it

  697. in his hands

  698. he showed it

  699. to Augustine

  700. and said

  701. see here is

  702. my God

  703. where is yours

  704. and Augustine

  705. replied I cannot

  706. show you

  707. my God

  708. not because

  709. there's no God

  710. to show you

  711. but because

  712. you have no

  713. eyes

  714. to see him

  715. we can't

  716. see God

  717. with physical

  718. eyes

  719. we have to

  720. have spiritual

  721. eyes

  722. to see him

  723. no one has

  724. ever seen

  725. God

  726. we would agree

  727. John says

  728. in verse 18

  729. no one

  730. has ever

  731. seen God

  732. our physical

  733. eyes cannot

  734. see him

  735. that's correct

  736. but

  737. Christians

  738. are those

  739. who by

  740. the grace

  741. of God

  742. have been

  743. given eyes

  744. to see

  745. the second

  746. half of the

  747. verse

  748. no one

  749. has ever

  750. seen God

  751. but

  752. the only

  753. God

  754. who is

  755. at the

  756. father's

  757. side

  758. he has

  759. made him

  760. known

  761. church

  762. if you want

  763. to see

  764. the glory

  765. of God

  766. you must

  767. be given

  768. eyes

  769. to see

  770. you know

  771. one way

  772. that

  773. he might

  774. just open

  775. up our

  776. eyes

  777. to see

  778. his glory

  779. is by

  780. witnesses

  781. to his

  782. glory

  783. there's

  784. the witness

  785. of nature

  786. the heavens

  787. declare

  788. what

  789. the glory

  790. of God

  791. the skies

  792. above

  793. proclaim

  794. his

  795. handiwork

  796. day to

  797. day

  798. pours out

  799. speech

  800. night to

  801. night

  802. reveals

  803. knowledge

  804. there is

  805. no speech

  806. nor are

  807. there words

  808. whose voice

  809. is not

  810. heard

  811. in other

  812. words

  813. everyone

  814. in creation

  815. has had

  816. the witness

  817. testify to

  818. them

  819. of the

  820. creator

  821. their voice

  822. goes out

  823. through all

  824. the earth

  825. their words

  826. to the end

  827. of the world

  828. saying God

  829. is there

  830. there's the

  831. witness of

  832. scripture

  833. this authoritative

  834. God breathed

  835. perfect witness

  836. 66 different

  837. books written

  838. by different

  839. authors in

  840. different times

  841. in different

  842. places and

  843. under different

  844. circumstances

  845. that all

  846. holds together

  847. as one

  848. testimony

  849. to God's

  850. glory in

  851. the gospel

  852. of Jesus

  853. Christ from

  854. beginning to

  855. end

  856. there's the

  857. witness of

  858. thousands upon

  859. thousands upon

  860. thousands of

  861. Christians throughout

  862. the world

  863. throughout the

  864. history of the

  865. church who

  866. say like John

  867. the Baptist

  868. here in this

  869. passage and

  870. they point

  871. upwards with

  872. their lives

  873. and their

  874. words towards

  875. the Messiah

  876. and say

  877. behold the

  878. Lamb of

  879. God

  880. Christians

  881. who have

  882. had their

  883. eyes open

  884. have been

  885. given eyes

  886. to see

  887. him

  888. and are

  889. willing even

  890. to the

  891. point of

  892. death

  893. to testify

  894. to what

  895. they have

  896. seen

  897. by the

  898. grace of

  899. God

  900. but you

  901. know the

  902. most

  903. powerful

  904. the most

  905. clear

  906. the most

  907. compelling

  908. appearing

  909. of the

  910. glory of

  911. God

  912. is the

  913. coming of

  914. the Son

  915. of God

  916. Jesus

  917. Christ

  918. Christ

  919. this is

  920. what

  921. John

  922. is

  923. telling

  924. us

  925. we

  926. have

  927. seen

  928. his

  929. glory

  930. commentators

  931. they

  932. they go

  933. back and

  934. forth

  935. they argue

  936. over whether

  937. or not

  938. he's

  939. he's

  940. talking

  941. about

  942. the

  943. transfiguration

  944. here

  945. where

  946. Jesus

  947. went up

  948. on the

  949. mountain

  950. his

  951. appearance

  952. was

  953. changed

  954. and he

  955. revealed

  956. his

  957. glory

  958. it says

  959. his face

  960. shone

  961. like the

  962. sun

  963. and his

  964. clothes

  965. became

  966. white

  967. as

  968. light

  969. and of

  970. course

  971. he's

  972. talking

  973. about

  974. that

  975. but not

  976. just

  977. that

  978. no one

  979. no one

  980. ever spoke

  981. like this

  982. man

  983. just a

  984. carpenter

  985. but

  986. with

  987. understanding

  988. and wisdom

  989. and authority

  990. that no

  991. one could

  992. explain

  993. so that

  994. Peter would

  995. later say

  996. Lord you

  997. have the

  998. words of

  999. eternal

  1000. life

  1001. where else

  1002. can we

  1003. go

  1004. we have

  1005. believed

  1006. and come

  1007. to know

  1008. that you

  1009. are the

  1010. holy

  1011. one

  1012. of God

  1013. no one

  1014. ever did

  1015. the things

  1016. that Jesus

  1017. could do

  1018. calming

  1019. storms

  1020. healing

  1021. the sick

  1022. casting

  1023. out

  1024. demons

  1025. forgiving

  1026. sins

  1027. performing

  1028. all sorts

  1029. of miracles

  1030. and signs

  1031. that we'll see

  1032. throughout this

  1033. book

  1034. foretelling

  1035. his own

  1036. death

  1037. and his

  1038. own

  1039. resurrection

  1040. and then

  1041. dying

  1042. and rising

  1043. exactly

  1044. as he

  1045. claimed

  1046. and then

  1047. appearing

  1048. to more

  1049. than 500

  1050. witnesses

  1051. among whom

  1052. is John

  1053. who wrote

  1054. this book

  1055. to say

  1056. that if you

  1057. want to see

  1058. the glory

  1059. of God

  1060. you must

  1061. look

  1062. to

  1063. Jesus

  1064. do you

  1065. ever just

  1066. wish you

  1067. could get

  1068. a better

  1069. vision

  1070. for

  1071. who God

  1072. is

  1073. for the

  1074. glory

  1075. of God

  1076. do you

  1077. ever pray

  1078. that prayer

  1079. Lord

  1080. show me

  1081. your glory

  1082. if you

  1083. do

  1084. let me

  1085. just

  1086. challenge

  1087. you

  1088. for a

  1089. moment

  1090. to do

  1091. something

  1092. very practical

  1093. even this

  1094. week

  1095. would you

  1096. set some

  1097. time

  1098. aside

  1099. and open

  1100. up your

  1101. Bible

  1102. maybe read

  1103. through one

  1104. of the

  1105. gospels

  1106. gospel of

  1107. Mark

  1108. 16 chapters

  1109. it's the

  1110. shortest one

  1111. you could

  1112. probably handle

  1113. that in

  1114. one sitting

  1115. maybe two

  1116. just read

  1117. through one

  1118. of the

  1119. gospels

  1120. and pray

  1121. and ask

  1122. the Lord

  1123. Lord would

  1124. you show

  1125. me your

  1126. glory

  1127. as I

  1128. fix my

  1129. eyes

  1130. on Christ

  1131. show me

  1132. who you

  1133. are

  1134. as I

  1135. look

  1136. to Jesus

  1137. show me

  1138. your glory

  1139. in the way

  1140. that this

  1141. man lived

  1142. and walked

  1143. and taught

  1144. give me

  1145. eyes to

  1146. see your

  1147. glory

  1148. in the

  1149. word

  1150. God

  1151. extends

  1152. his

  1153. grace

  1154. to sinners

  1155. in Jesus

  1156. by sending

  1157. forth his

  1158. glory in a

  1159. way that

  1160. can be

  1161. seen

  1162. and known

  1163. but not

  1164. just that

  1165. he extended

  1166. his grace

  1167. that it

  1168. might be

  1169. received

  1170. this is the

  1171. third way

  1172. Jesus extends

  1173. God's grace

  1174. to sinners

  1175. third

  1176. in Jesus

  1177. sinners

  1178. receive

  1179. the grace

  1180. of God

  1181. see God's

  1182. grace

  1183. is not just

  1184. meant to be

  1185. observed

  1186. and seen

  1187. passively

  1188. no

  1189. it must

  1190. be received

  1191. actively

  1192. by faith

  1193. look there

  1194. to verse

  1195. 16

  1196. John says

  1197. and from

  1198. his fullness

  1199. we have

  1200. all received

  1201. grace

  1202. upon grace

  1203. for the law

  1204. was given

  1205. through Moses

  1206. grace

  1207. and truth

  1208. came

  1209. through Jesus

  1210. Christ

  1211. we saw

  1212. the contrast

  1213. last week

  1214. didn't we

  1215. those who

  1216. reject

  1217. the light

  1218. are

  1219. separated

  1220. from God

  1221. left in

  1222. the darkness

  1223. of their

  1224. sin

  1225. but

  1226. to all

  1227. who did

  1228. receive him

  1229. who believe

  1230. in his

  1231. name

  1232. he gives

  1233. this

  1234. unbelievable

  1235. right

  1236. to become

  1237. children

  1238. of God

  1239. who were

  1240. born not

  1241. of blood

  1242. nor of the

  1243. will of the

  1244. flesh

  1245. nor of the

  1246. will of man

  1247. but of

  1248. God

  1249. it's all

  1250. of grace

  1251. if you're

  1252. born into

  1253. it naturally

  1254. by blood

  1255. it is not

  1256. of grace

  1257. if you work

  1258. for it

  1259. by the labor

  1260. of your hands

  1261. by your flesh

  1262. by your effort

  1263. it is not

  1264. of grace

  1265. if you

  1266. if you will

  1267. it into

  1268. existence

  1269. by your

  1270. desiring

  1271. by your

  1272. choosing

  1273. it is not

  1274. of grace

  1275. and it has

  1276. always been

  1277. this way

  1278. look there

  1279. to what he says

  1280. in verse 17

  1281. we need to

  1282. understand this

  1283. he says

  1284. the law

  1285. was given

  1286. through Moses

  1287. grace and

  1288. truth came

  1289. through Jesus

  1290. Christ

  1291. we need to

  1292. understand this

  1293. because some

  1294. take this

  1295. as as a

  1296. contrast

  1297. as if he's

  1298. saying

  1299. before Jesus

  1300. there was

  1301. no grace

  1302. no truth

  1303. but now that

  1304. Jesus has come

  1305. we have grace

  1306. and truth

  1307. I don't think

  1308. that's what he's

  1309. saying here

  1310. the law

  1311. was a

  1312. grace

  1313. of God

  1314. the law

  1315. was a

  1316. gift

  1317. of God's

  1318. grace

  1319. I don't think

  1320. you can read

  1321. through the

  1322. Psalms

  1323. and come

  1324. to the

  1325. conclusion

  1326. that the

  1327. law was

  1328. not a

  1329. gift

  1330. of God's

  1331. grace

  1332. Psalm 19

  1333. says

  1334. the law

  1335. of the Lord

  1336. is perfect

  1337. reviving

  1338. the soul

  1339. the testimony

  1340. of the Lord

  1341. is sure

  1342. making wise

  1343. the simple

  1344. the precepts

  1345. of the Lord

  1346. are right

  1347. rejoicing

  1348. the heart

  1349. the commandment

  1350. of the Lord

  1351. is pure

  1352. enlightening

  1353. the eyes

  1354. the fear

  1355. of the Lord

  1356. is clean

  1357. enduring

  1358. forever

  1359. the rules

  1360. of the Lord

  1361. are true

  1362. and righteous

  1363. all together

  1364. more to be

  1365. desired are they

  1366. than gold

  1367. even much

  1368. fine gold

  1369. sweeter also

  1370. than honey

  1371. and drippings

  1372. of the honeycomb

  1373. moreover

  1374. by them

  1375. as your servant

  1376. worn

  1377. and in keeping

  1378. them

  1379. there is

  1380. great

  1381. reward

  1382. is that

  1383. not

  1384. a gift

  1385. of God's

  1386. grace

  1387. the law

  1388. is

  1389. truth

  1390. of God

  1391. it is

  1392. God's

  1393. word

  1394. graciously

  1395. delivered

  1396. God's

  1397. word

  1398. come

  1399. down

  1400. to us

  1401. written

  1402. in black

  1403. and white

  1404. where we

  1405. can read

  1406. it

  1407. and hold

  1408. it

  1409. and see

  1410. the heart

  1411. of God

  1412. it communicates

  1413. the holiness

  1414. of God

  1415. it communicates

  1416. the sinfulness

  1417. of man

  1418. that is

  1419. God's

  1420. grace

  1421. but John

  1422. is showing

  1423. us again

  1424. once again

  1425. as good

  1426. as that was

  1427. something better

  1428. has come

  1429. Jesus Christ

  1430. has come

  1431. in Christ

  1432. grace has come

  1433. to us

  1434. in a much

  1435. fuller

  1436. more lasting

  1437. more permanent

  1438. more effective

  1439. way

  1440. Jesus Christ

  1441. is the word

  1442. of God

  1443. made flesh

  1444. the word

  1445. of God

  1446. come

  1447. down

  1448. to us

  1449. full

  1450. of grace

  1451. and truth

  1452. in the

  1453. tabernacle

  1454. God drew

  1455. near

  1456. in part

  1457. but in

  1458. Christ

  1459. now

  1460. he has

  1461. come

  1462. in full

  1463. to dwell

  1464. with

  1465. sinners

  1466. God

  1467. manifested

  1468. his glory

  1469. for the

  1470. Old Testament

  1471. saints

  1472. like

  1473. like rays

  1474. off of

  1475. the sun

  1476. but

  1477. now

  1478. in Christ

  1479. the sun

  1480. himself

  1481. has come

  1482. to dwell

  1483. with us

  1484. and we

  1485. have seen

  1486. his glory

  1487. and God

  1488. graciously

  1489. delivered his

  1490. word

  1491. but now

  1492. in Christ

  1493. the word

  1494. was made

  1495. flesh

  1496. and dwelt

  1497. among us

  1498. full

  1499. of grace

  1500. and truth

  1501. that he

  1502. might be

  1503. received

  1504. and that we

  1505. might be

  1506. transformed

  1507. you all

  1508. have probably

  1509. heard me

  1510. quote this

  1511. poem from

  1512. John Bunyan

  1513. before

  1514. not Paul

  1515. Bunyan

  1516. John Bunyan

  1517. run

  1518. John run

  1519. the law

  1520. demands

  1521. but gives

  1522. us neither

  1523. feet nor

  1524. hands

  1525. far better

  1526. news the

  1527. gospel brings

  1528. which bids

  1529. us fly

  1530. and gives

  1531. us

  1532. wings

  1533. see the

  1534. law

  1535. graciously

  1536. reveals God's

  1537. will to us

  1538. it makes

  1539. demands

  1540. but it

  1541. does not

  1542. give us

  1543. the ability

  1544. to obey

  1545. it

  1546. none of

  1547. us are

  1548. able to

  1549. keep it

  1550. and when

  1551. sinners see

  1552. the law

  1553. when we

  1554. come face

  1555. to face

  1556. with that

  1557. holy law

  1558. of God

  1559. all it

  1560. does is

  1561. expose

  1562. our sin

  1563. all it

  1564. does is

  1565. show us

  1566. how far

  1567. we fall

  1568. short

  1569. from the

  1570. glory of

  1571. God

  1572. even if

  1573. we try

  1574. to obey

  1575. it in

  1576. our own

  1577. flesh

  1578. the way

  1579. we go

  1580. about

  1581. obeying

  1582. the law

  1583. is

  1584. sinful

  1585. we need

  1586. something

  1587. better

  1588. we need

  1589. the saving

  1590. grace of

  1591. God to

  1592. come to

  1593. us in

  1594. fullness

  1595. we need

  1596. God's grace

  1597. to come in

  1598. power to

  1599. declare us

  1600. innocent not

  1601. because of our

  1602. obedience but

  1603. because of the

  1604. obedience of

  1605. another one who

  1606. who came down

  1607. from heaven to

  1608. perfectly obey the

  1609. law in our

  1610. place

  1611. we need

  1612. the grace

  1613. of God

  1614. to come

  1615. and to

  1616. change us

  1617. from the

  1618. inside out

  1619. so that we

  1620. we're made

  1621. new

  1622. we're made

  1623. capable

  1624. of obeying

  1625. so that we

  1626. want to

  1627. obey the

  1628. law of

  1629. God

  1630. so that we

  1631. we can

  1632. obey the

  1633. law of

  1634. God

  1635. by his

  1636. grace

  1637. we need

  1638. the grace

  1639. of God

  1640. to give

  1641. us

  1642. new

  1643. hearts

  1644. that love

  1645. the Lord

  1646. with all

  1647. our heart

  1648. mind

  1649. soul

  1650. and strength

  1651. and love

  1652. our neighbor

  1653. as ourself

  1654. we don't

  1655. just need

  1656. a little bit

  1657. of grace

  1658. church

  1659. we need

  1660. fullness

  1661. of grace

  1662. and truth

  1663. John tells

  1664. us that

  1665. that is what

  1666. Jesus extends

  1667. to sinners

  1668. this morning

  1669. are you

  1670. drinking

  1671. from the

  1672. fountain

  1673. of the

  1674. grace

  1675. of God

  1676. not just

  1677. once

  1678. but over

  1679. and over

  1680. and over

  1681. and over

  1682. and over

  1683. again

  1684. Martin

  1685. Luther

  1686. he says

  1687. this spring

  1688. he's talking

  1689. about the

  1690. spring of

  1691. God's

  1692. grace

  1693. this spring

  1694. is

  1695. inexhaustible

  1696. it is full

  1697. of grace

  1698. and truth

  1699. from God

  1700. it never

  1701. loses

  1702. anything

  1703. no matter

  1704. how much

  1705. we draw

  1706. but remains

  1707. an infinite

  1708. fountain

  1709. of all

  1710. grace

  1711. and truth

  1712. the more

  1713. you draw

  1714. from it

  1715. the more

  1716. abundantly

  1717. it gives

  1718. of the water

  1719. that springs

  1720. into eternal

  1721. life

  1722. just as the

  1723. sun is not

  1724. darkened

  1725. by the whole

  1726. world enjoying

  1727. its light

  1728. and could

  1729. indeed light

  1730. up ten

  1731. worlds

  1732. just as

  1733. one hundred

  1734. thousand

  1735. lights might

  1736. be lit

  1737. from one

  1738. light

  1739. and not

  1740. detract

  1741. from it

  1742. just as

  1743. one learned

  1744. man is able

  1745. to make

  1746. a thousand

  1747. others

  1748. learned

  1749. and the

  1750. more he

  1751. gives

  1752. the more

  1753. he has

  1754. so is

  1755. Christ

  1756. our Lord

  1757. an infinite

  1758. source

  1759. of all

  1760. grace

  1761. so that if

  1762. the whole

  1763. world would

  1764. draw enough

  1765. grace and

  1766. truth from

  1767. it to make

  1768. the world

  1769. all angels

  1770. yet it would

  1771. not lose

  1772. a drop

  1773. the fountain

  1774. always runs

  1775. over

  1776. full

  1777. of grace

  1778. I'll ask

  1779. you again

  1780. are you

  1781. drinking

  1782. from the

  1783. fountain

  1784. of God's

  1785. grace

  1786. in Christ

  1787. I want

  1788. our church

  1789. to be

  1790. marked

  1791. by grace

  1792. not just

  1793. saved by

  1794. grace

  1795. but transformed

  1796. by his

  1797. grace

  1798. let me tell

  1799. you

  1800. what that

  1801. might look

  1802. like

  1803. as we

  1804. close

  1805. it might

  1806. look like

  1807. a group

  1808. of people

  1809. whose

  1810. burdens

  1811. are

  1812. lifted

  1813. we no

  1814. longer

  1815. have to

  1816. labor

  1817. and to

  1818. strive

  1819. by our

  1820. own effort

  1821. to earn

  1822. anything

  1823. before God

  1824. it's been

  1825. given to

  1826. us by

  1827. his

  1828. infinite

  1829. grace

  1830. in

  1831. Christ

  1832. that might

  1833. look like

  1834. joy

  1835. and peace

  1836. and happiness

  1837. and contentment

  1838. might look like

  1839. hope

  1840. hope

  1841. overflowing

  1842. it might

  1843. look like

  1844. humility

  1845. as we

  1846. imitate

  1847. Christ

  1848. who

  1849. emptied

  1850. himself

  1851. considered

  1852. equality

  1853. with God

  1854. not a

  1855. thing

  1856. to be

  1857. grasped

  1858. but took

  1859. the form

  1860. of a

  1861. servant

  1862. became

  1863. obedient

  1864. to the

  1865. point of

  1866. death

  1867. even death

  1868. on a

  1869. cross

  1870. it might

  1871. look like

  1872. us growing

  1873. to reflect

  1874. the glory

  1875. of God

  1876. as we

  1877. let grace

  1878. transform

  1879. us

  1880. into

  1881. his

  1882. image

  1883. and it

  1884. might look

  1885. like

  1886. grace

  1887. extended

  1888. through

  1889. us

  1890. to the

  1891. world

  1892. around

  1893. us

  1894. you know

  1895. this

  1896. grace

  1897. is not

  1898. just

  1899. meant

  1900. to be

  1901. received

  1902. and kept

  1903. to

  1904. ourselves

  1905. if you

  1906. have

  1907. tasted

  1908. of the

  1909. grace

  1910. of God

  1911. share

  1912. it

  1913. share

  1914. it

  1915. with others

  1916. around

  1917. you

  1918. that

  1919. all

  1920. might

  1921. taste

  1922. and see

  1923. that

  1924. the

  1925. Lord

  1926. is

  1927. good

  1928. amen

  1929. let's

  1930. pray

  1931. Lord we

  1932. ask that

  1933. you would

  1934. make us

  1935. a people

  1936. marked by

  1937. your

  1938. grace

  1939. and we

  1940. praise you

  1941. that the

  1942. grace

  1943. of God

  1944. has come

  1945. in fullness

  1946. in the

  1947. person of

  1948. Christ

  1949. Lord so

  1950. that if

  1951. any

  1952. sinner

  1953. would turn

  1954. and believe

  1955. and trust

  1956. in him

  1957. his sins

  1958. would be

  1959. wiped

  1960. away

  1961. not only

  1962. that he

  1963. would be

  1964. made

  1965. like you

  1966. further and

  1967. further conformed

  1968. into your

  1969. image

  1970. and so we

  1971. pray

  1972. Father that

  1973. this church

  1974. would be

  1975. marked by

  1976. your grace

  1977. we pray

  1978. that others

  1979. would come

  1980. to know

  1981. you

  1982. as we

  1983. extend

  1984. your grace

  1985. to others

  1986. we pray

  1987. this in

  1988. Christ's

  1989. name

  1990. amen

  1991. to

  1992. him

  1993. you
