  1. Please open your Bibles this morning to the Gospel according to John.

  2. We finished John's prologue last week, verses 1-18, so this morning we are officially jumping into the narrative section of this book.

  3. And so turn there to John chapter 1, we're going to read this morning from verse 19 through verse 34.

    John 1 chapter mention

  4. John chapter 1, verses 19 through 34.

    John 1:19–34

  5. And if you're using the pew Bibles there in front of you, you can find this passage on page 833.

  6. We invite you and encourage you to have a Bible open.

  7. So we're going to be on John chapter 1, verses 19 through 34 this morning.

    John 1:19–34

  8. Please follow with me as I read.

  9. And this is the testimony of John.

  10. When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,

  11. Who are you?

  12. He confessed and did not deny, but confessed,

  13. I am not the Christ.

  14. And they asked him,

  15. What then? Are you Elijah?

  16. He said, I am not.

  17. Are you the prophet?

  18. And he answered, No.

  19. So they said to him,

  20. Who are you?

  21. We need to give an answer to those who sent us.

  22. What do you say about yourself?

  23. He said,

  24. I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness.

  25. Make straight the way of the Lord,

  26. as the prophet Isaiah said.

  27. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

  28. They asked him,

  29. Then why are you baptizing,

  30. if you are neither the Christ,

  31. nor Elijah,

  32. nor the prophet?

  33. John answered them,

  34. I baptize with water,

  35. But among you stands one you do not know,

  36. even he who comes after me,

  37. the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.

  38. These things took place in Bethany,

  39. across the Jordan,

  40. where John was baptizing.

  41. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said,

  42. Behold the Lamb of God,

  43. who takes away the sin of the world.

  44. This is he of whom I said,

  45. After me comes a man who ranks before me,

  46. because he was before me.

  47. I myself did not know him,

  48. but for this purpose I came baptizing with water,

  49. that he might be revealed to Israel.

  50. And John bore witness.

  51. I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove,

  52. and it remained on him.

  53. I myself did not know him,

  54. but he who sent me to baptize with water,

  55. said to me,

  56. He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain,

  57. this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

  58. And I have seen and have borne witness

  59. that this is the Son of God.

  60. This is God's holy, perfect, true, and inspired word.

  61. Let's bow and pray once more.

  62. Father, we simply ask again

  63. that as we open up your word,

  64. that you would do a miracle here.

  65. That we wouldn't just hear it as information,

  66. but by the power of your Spirit,

  67. would it transform us

  68. as we hear and receive your word.

  69. We pray in Christ's name.

  70. Amen.

  71. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,

  72. then John the Baptist has got to be

  73. one of the least flattered figures in the Bible.

  74. We sing David's songs,

  75. and we pray his words from the Psalms.

  76. David wrote a large portion of the Old Testament.

  77. We simply don't have that same wealth of information

  78. from John the Baptist.

  79. Just a handful of verses in comparison.

  80. Plenty of people want to live in big,

  81. fancy houses like Solomon.

  82. I don't hear many people wanting to live

  83. out in the wilderness like John.

  84. People love to talk about Joseph

  85. and his coat of many colors.

  86. As I look around,

  87. I don't see anybody wearing camel's hair

  88. like John the Baptist did.

  89. And I've heard of plenty of people

  90. following the Daniel diet,

  91. but I don't know of a single person

  92. who has ever followed the John the Baptist diet

  93. of locusts and wild honey.

  94. That might not be what we want to imitate

  95. from the life of John.

  96. But despite his lack of press,

  97. John the Baptist is one of the most significant figures

  98. in human history.

  99. In fact, R.C. Sproul,

  100. he observes that secular historians

  101. from the first century,

  102. they wrote more words,

  103. they gave more attention to John the Baptist

  104. than they did to Jesus himself.

  105. He was that unbelievably significant.

  106. And no, it's not primarily because of his clothes

  107. or his lodging or his diet.

  108. It was because of his witness.

  109. John the Apostle,

  110. he first introduced us to John the Baptist

  111. up in verse 6.

  112. And here's what we said.

  113. You may remember this from several weeks ago.

  114. We said that we cannot imitate John's unique position,

  115. but we can imitate his posture

  116. and his proclamation.

  117. I wonder if you remember that.

  118. We cannot imitate John's unique position.

  119. He was one of a kind,

  120. one of one, utterly unique.

  121. But we can and we must imitate his posture

  122. and his proclamation.

  123. If you are a Christian,

  124. then you are, like it or not,

  125. a witness to the glory of God

  126. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  127. Our passage this morning,

  128. as we look to who John the Baptist is,

  129. how he acted,

  130. what he said,

  131. our passage this morning,

  132. it gives us two keys to that witness.

  133. If you're taking notes,

  134. this is going to be our outline this morning.

  135. We're going to see two keys

  136. for our witness to Christ,

  137. our posture

  138. and our proclamation.

  139. First, what is our posture

  140. as witnesses to Christ?

  141. Look there to verse 19 with me.

  142. It says,

  143. and this is the testimony of John.

  144. Let's stop there

  145. because that might not sound like much,

  146. but this was an unbelievably,

  147. unbelievably significant moment

  148. in God's story of redemption.

  149. The Old Testament,

  150. it had concluded with Malachi's prophecy

  151. and then for 400 years,

  152. God was silent.

  153. There was no vision.

  154. There were no prophecies.

  155. There was no prophets.

  156. God did not speak.

  157. It was utter silence from God

  158. for 400 years

  159. until a prophet comes out of the wilderness

  160. and begins to testify.

  161. Apparently, John was causing

  162. a little bit of a scene.

  163. People from all over were coming to him,

  164. listening to his message

  165. and as we see in the Gospel of Matthew,

  166. he was preaching a message of repentance.

  167. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  168. His message was,

  169. turn from your sin.

  170. Repent.

  171. The king is coming.

  172. He's on his way.

  173. You had better prepare yourselves.

  174. He is near.

  175. And as a way of demonstrating that repentance,

  176. we see that he was baptizing there in the water.

  177. Now, this is not quite the same as our baptism today.

  178. We baptize in a hot tub.

  179. But not only that,

  180. we baptize believers in Christ.

  181. We demonstrate externally, visibly,

  182. the internal transformation

  183. that has happened by the power of the Holy Spirit

  184. when God saves someone

  185. and they come to faith in Christ.

  186. This was not that.

  187. John's baptism,

  188. this was something called proselyte baptism.

  189. Proselyte baptism had arisen

  190. during that 400 years

  191. between the two testaments.

  192. And it was traditionally only for Gentiles

  193. who converted to Judaism.

  194. And they were considered unclean.

  195. And so they needed to be washed.

  196. They needed to be cleansed.

  197. And actually, the convert would baptize himself.

  198. He would wash himself,

  199. clean himself up,

  200. have to wash away his uncleanliness

  201. before joining the Jewish community.

  202. But here comes John,

  203. out of the wilderness,

  204. preaching a message of repentance,

  205. not just for the Gentiles,

  206. but for the Jews as well.

  207. Not just for the Gentiles

  208. who didn't know the Lord,

  209. but for Israel.

  210. He came saying that the kingdom of God is near

  211. and they are not ready.

  212. They need to repent.

  213. And on top of that,

  214. people are coming to him

  215. and he is the one doing the baptism.

  216. He's administering baptism

  217. to all of these people.

  218. So naturally,

  219. the religious leaders were curious.

  220. What in the world is this guy doing?

  221. Who does he think he is?

  222. And that's exactly what they asked him there in verse 19.

  223. It says,

  224. The Jews sent priests and Levites,

  225. some of their religious experts from Jerusalem,

  226. to ask him,

  227. Who are you?

  228. And here's where we begin to see

  229. the posture of John.

  230. In the strongest terms possible,

  231. he confessed and did not deny,

  232. but confessed,

  233. I am not the Christ.

  234. See, he didn't even begin to tell them

  235. who he was.

  236. He told them who he was not.

  237. Don't look at me.

  238. Don't worry about me.

  239. I'm not him.

  240. Look to him.

  241. I'm just here to pave the way for him.

  242. So they moved on to the next option.

  243. Well, what then?

  244. Are you Elijah?

  245. Elijah the prophet famously did not die.

  246. He was taken up to be with the Lord,

  247. and so it was believed that Elijah himself

  248. physically, literally,

  249. would return in the future.

  250. And in fact, Malachi,

  251. the last prophet of the Old Testament,

  252. it concludes with this prophecy

  253. that I will send Elijah the prophet

  254. before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

  255. So John here, he says,

  256. no, I'm not Elijah,

  257. and technically he's correct.

  258. No, he's John.

  259. He's not Elijah.

  260. But Jesus, in Matthew 11,

  261. he tells us that John is in fact

  262. the fulfillment of this prophecy.

  263. He is Elijah who is to come.

  264. So they're down to one more option.

  265. Are you the prophet?

  266. If they had said,

  267. are you a prophet?

  268. Maybe John would have said,

  269. yes, I am,

  270. but they didn't say that.

  271. They said,

  272. are you the prophet?

  273. They're referring to the prophecy

  274. of Deuteronomy 18.

  275. God had told Moses in Deuteronomy 18,

  276. I will raise up for them a prophet like you

  277. from among their brothers,

  278. and I will put my words in his mouth,

  279. and he shall speak to them

  280. all that I command him.

  281. They were looking for this particular prophet to come.

  282. And of course,

  283. that is a prophecy fulfilled in Christ.

  284. So again, John says,

  285. no, that's not me.

  286. I am not him.

  287. So they're finally out of options,

  288. and they give John a turn to speak and say,

  289. well, then who are you?

  290. We need to give an answer to those who sent us.

  291. What do you say about yourself?

  292. And John tells them,

  293. referencing Isaiah 40, verse 3,

    Isaiah 40:3

  294. which we read this morning,

  295. I am the voice.

  296. Not the word,

  297. the voice.

  298. Not the word,

  299. but a witness.

  300. I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,

  301. make straight the way of the Lord,

  302. as the prophet Isaiah had said.

  303. See, John knew his role.

  304. It was not to attract glory,

  305. or fame,

  306. or attention to himself.

  307. It was to prepare the way of the Lord.

  308. His role was to clear the way,

  309. to make the path straight.

  310. The King is coming.

  311. When I was in college,

  312. I lived in a house with three other college guys,

  313. and if you came to our house,

  314. you would notice that it was inhabited

  315. by four college guys living there.

  316. It was an absolute mess.

  317. And every now and then,

  318. we would get a message,

  319. a warning.

  320. The landlord is coming.

  321. He's on his way.

  322. He will be there soon.

  323. How do you think we responded?

  324. It was a whirlwind.

  325. We hopped up into a whirlwind of cleaning.

  326. The dishes were done.

  327. Clothes were thrown into the closet.

  328. Floors were cleaned.

  329. We prepped ourselves for his arrival.

  330. Well, John says,

  331. in that same way,

  332. the King is coming.

  333. Don't look at me.

  334. I'm just the messenger.

  335. Listen to the message.

  336. The message is urgent.

  337. You need to repent

  338. and prepare yourself

  339. for the coming of the King.

  340. Get your affairs in order.

  341. The King is on his way.

  342. Now, I'd like to have thought

  343. that that would have satisfied me,

  344. but they had another question.

  345. It was probably the one

  346. that bothered them the most.

  347. Look what they said.

  348. Then why are you baptizing?

  349. If you're neither the Christ,

  350. nor Elijah,

  351. nor the prophet,

  352. what are you doing?

  353. And John's little addition there

  354. in verse 24,

  355. I think,

  356. says it all.

  357. My Bible has it there

  358. in parentheses.

  359. If you look there,

  360. maybe yours does as well.

  361. He gives a little aside

  362. and says,

  363. now they had been sent

  364. from the Pharisees.

  365. This is the first appearance

  366. of the Pharisees

  367. in the Gospel of John,

  368. but as you know,

  369. it will not be the last.

  370. This is the beginning

  371. of some tension

  372. that will build

  373. throughout this book

  374. and of course will culminate

  375. in the death of Christ.

  376. The Pharisees were not all bad.

  377. I want to give them

  378. some credit.

  379. I want to be clear about that.

  380. Some Pharisees wound up

  381. following Jesus.

  382. They believed in Him,

  383. but many did not.

  384. The Pharisees were

  385. the religious elite of the day.

  386. They held the law of God

  387. in high esteem on one hand,

  388. but we see that they also

  389. tended to hold

  390. their own tradition

  391. in high esteem as well.

  392. And they had a hard time

  393. reconciling or understanding

  394. or accepting anyone

  395. who would go and teach

  396. contrary to what they said,

  397. to what their tradition was.

  398. And again,

  399. we should note here

  400. that there is no Old Testament

  401. command or instruction

  402. about baptizing a convert

  403. to Judaism.

  404. That had developed

  405. as tradition,

  406. Jewish tradition,

  407. in that intertestamental period.

  408. Traditions are great,

  409. but scripture is better.

  410. And sometimes,

  411. I think we tend to get

  412. that priority lopsided.

  413. Traditions are wonderful,

  414. but scripture is better.

  415. And again,

  416. I love how John responds here.

  417. Look what he says.

  418. He doesn't respond

  419. how I might have responded

  420. to that.

  421. He doesn't even give them

  422. a straight answer.

  423. He could have said,

  424. don't you realize

  425. that I am a prophet?

  426. Which means

  427. that I carry the same weight

  428. of authority

  429. as all the prophets

  430. of the Old Testament.

  431. And so,

  432. if I come saying

  433. that we need to repent

  434. and be baptized,

  435. that's the word of God

  436. telling you,

  437. lay aside your tradition

  438. and accept this new word

  439. from the Lord.

  440. You need to be baptized.

  441. Come wash yourself.

  442. You are unclean.

  443. When God says

  444. the Messiah is coming

  445. and you are not ready,

  446. it's time to toss

  447. your traditions aside

  448. and listen to the voice of God.

  449. But he doesn't say that.

  450. What does he say?

  451. Look there to verse 26.

  452. He says,

  453. I baptize with water,

  454. but among you

  455. stands one you do not know.

  456. Even he who comes after me,

  457. the strap of whose sandal

  458. I am not worthy to untie.

  459. He again lowers himself

  460. and he elevates Christ.

  461. That was John's posture.

  462. When someone became

  463. a disciple of a rabbi,

  464. they came under the teaching

  465. of a rabbi,

  466. they would do all sorts

  467. of things for him,

  468. almost to the level

  469. of being a bondservant.

  470. It was much more

  471. than just listening

  472. and taking notes

  473. and following along

  474. with their teaching.

  475. When someone became

  476. a disciple,

  477. this was an all-of-life

  478. commitment to service,

  479. to the mission

  480. and the teaching

  481. of the rabbi.

  482. So they would take care

  483. of all sorts

  484. of arrangements.

  485. They took care

  486. of everything from food

  487. to lodging

  488. to carrying their belongings,

  489. all sorts of things.

  490. But one thing

  491. they did not do

  492. was handle

  493. the rabbi's shoes.

  494. They didn't do that.

  495. That one task

  496. was reserved

  497. for the bondservants,

  498. for the lowest

  499. of the low.

  500. But John says,

  501. for this man,

  502. go even lower

  503. than that.

  504. I'm not even

  505. worthy to untie

  506. the strap

  507. of his sandal.

  508. Church,

  509. I think we could

  510. learn something

  511. from the posture

  512. of John the Baptist.

  513. Don't you?

  514. If you want

  515. to be great,

  516. make yourself

  517. less than a servant.

  518. Go lower.

  519. Matthew and Mark,

  520. we talked about this

  521. in Sunday school.

  522. I love when Treg

  523. preaches my sermon

  524. before I come in here.

  525. I really do.

  526. It primes the pump.

  527. Matthew and Mark,

  528. they both tell

  529. the story of how

  530. James and his brother

  531. John,

  532. the John,

  533. the John who wrote

  534. this book,

  535. John the Apostle,

  536. who were reading

  537. this gospel,

  538. how they pursued

  539. greatness.

  540. They came up to Jesus

  541. and they asked

  542. that it be granted

  543. to them

  544. to sit one

  545. at his right hand,

  546. one at his left hand

  547. in glory.

  548. That's a bold request.

  549. They wanted

  550. to be great.

  551. You know,

  552. John just happens

  553. to leave that story out

  554. of his gospel.

  555. You notice that?

  556. And it says,

  557. when the other ten

  558. disciples heard of it,

  559. they were angry

  560. at them.

  561. Not because that was

  562. such a foolish request,

  563. but because they

  564. wanted to be great.

  565. They didn't want to be

  566. beaten to the punch.

  567. And Jesus hears

  568. all of this

  569. and he says,

  570. listen,

  571. y'all need to come

  572. over here,

  573. sit down,

  574. I need to tell you

  575. something.

  576. Listen to me.

  577. He says,

  578. you know that

  579. those who are

  580. considered rulers

  581. of the Gentiles

  582. lord it over them

  583. and their great ones

  584. exercise authority

  585. over them,

  586. but it shall not

  587. be so among you.

  588. But whoever would

  589. be great among you

  590. must be your servant.

  591. And whoever would

  592. be first among you

  593. must be slave of all.

  594. For even the son of man

  595. came not to be served,

  596. but to serve

  597. and to give his life

  598. as a ransom for many.

  599. See, that's how Jesus

  600. viewed greatness.

  601. No wonder he says

  602. in Matthew chapter 11

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  603. that among those

  604. born of women

  605. there has arisen

  606. no one greater

  607. than John the Baptist.

  608. Not David,

  609. not Joseph,

  610. not Abraham,

  611. not Isaac,

  612. not Jacob.

  613. No one

  614. is greater

  615. than John the Baptist.

  616. Do you want to be great

  617. in the kingdom of God?

  618. John,

  619. lower yourself.

  620. Humble

  621. yourself.

  622. Stop making it

  623. about you

  624. become

  625. a servant.

  626. Imitate

  627. the posture

  628. of John.

  629. Take this posture

  630. of a humble

  631. servant,

  632. unworthy

  633. even to be

  634. a bondservant

  635. of Jesus Christ.

  636. Could you imagine?

  637. what would your life

  638. look like

  639. if it wasn't

  640. all about you,

  641. but it was about

  642. the glory

  643. of Jesus Christ?

  644. What would that do

  645. for the dynamic

  646. of your relationships?

  647. If the goal

  648. of your relationships

  649. was to humble

  650. yourself

  651. and serve

  652. that those

  653. other people

  654. might know

  655. the glory

  656. of Christ Jesus,

  657. what would that do

  658. for your marriage?

  659. if you put

  660. yourself aside

  661. to serve

  662. that they might

  663. know Christ

  664. more,

  665. what would it do

  666. for this church?

  667. What would this church

  668. look like?

  669. If you can imagine

  670. this,

  671. if there was

  672. no task

  673. that was beneath

  674. us,

  675. if we would

  676. jump to serve

  677. whether people

  678. saw us or not,

  679. whether people

  680. gave us credit

  681. or not,

  682. whether the only

  683. person who saw

  684. what you did

  685. was the master

  686. himself.

  687. And I do

  688. want to commend

  689. you,

  690. Siwe Bay,

  691. because there

  692. are many

  693. humble servants

  694. in this church.

  695. I think this

  696. is one of our

  697. strengths.

  698. But I want

  699. to challenge

  700. you.

  701. Go lower.

  702. We can go

  703. lower.

  704. The world

  705. knows all

  706. about climbing

  707. the ladder

  708. to greatness.

  709. What would it

  710. look like to

  711. bring someone

  712. into this place

  713. and have them

  714. see a family

  715. of servants

  716. who say,

  717. don't look at us.

  718. We're nothing.

  719. Look to Christ.

  720. Church,

  721. this humble

  722. posture of

  723. our lives

  724. will give

  725. weight to

  726. the proclamation

  727. of our lips.

  728. We need

  729. both.

  730. I'm going to

  731. say that again.

  732. The humble

  733. posture of

  734. our lives

  735. will give

  736. weight to

  737. the proclamation

  738. of our lips.

  739. That's the

  740. second key

  741. to our

  742. witness

  743. to Christ.

  744. Our second

  745. point this

  746. morning.

  747. Second,

  748. we see

  749. our

  750. proclamation

  751. as witnesses

  752. of Christ.

  753. Our

  754. proclamation.

  755. Now,

  756. we talk a lot

  757. about evangelism.

  758. That's one of

  759. our three

  760. key aspects

  761. of our

  762. philosophy

  763. of ministry.

  764. We want

  765. to enjoy

  766. God.

  767. We want

  768. to equip

  769. the saints

  770. and we

  771. want to

  772. evangelize

  773. the lost.

  774. That means

  775. sharing the

  776. gospel.

  777. That requires

  778. us to

  779. proclaim

  780. something.

  781. But talking

  782. with many

  783. of you,

  784. I know

  785. that sometimes

  786. you get

  787. to that

  788. point and

  789. you aren't

  790. even really

  791. sure exactly

  792. what to

  793. say.

  794. I want

  795. to let

  796. John help

  797. us out

  798. here this

  799. morning.

  800. You can

  801. remember

  802. this with

  803. three S's.

  804. Three parts

  805. to John's

  806. proclamation

  807. and his

  808. testimony

  809. here.

  810. Three S's.

  811. Substitute,

  812. Spirit,

  813. Spirit,

  814. Son.

  815. If you

  816. want to

  817. know who

  818. Jesus is,

  819. John tells

  820. us here that

  821. he is the

  822. sacrificial

  823. substitute,

  824. he is the

  825. Spirit-filled

  826. Spirit-giver,

  827. and he is

  828. the Son

  829. of God.

  830. First S.

  831. And Jesus

  832. is the

  833. sacrificial

  834. substitute.

  835. Look there

  836. to verse

  837. 29.

  838. Verse 29.

  839. He says,

  840. The next

  841. day John

  842. saw Jesus

  843. coming toward

  844. him and

  845. said,

  846. Behold,

  847. the Lamb

  848. of God

  849. who takes

  850. away the

  851. sin of

  852. the world.

  853. This is

  854. he of whom

  855. I said,

  856. After me

  857. comes a

  858. man who

  859. ranks before

  860. me because

  861. he was

  862. before me.

  863. Behold,

  864. the Lamb

  865. of God

  866. who takes

  867. away the

  868. sin of

  869. the world.

  870. What does

  871. he mean

  872. when he

  873. calls Jesus

  874. the Lamb

  875. of God?

  876. John is

  877. no doubt

  878. as he's

  879. done so

  880. many times

  881. already through

  882. this first

  883. chapter,

  884. time and

  885. time and

  886. time and

  887. time again,

  888. he's drawing

  889. us back

  890. again towards

  891. the Old

  892. Testament

  893. scriptures.

  894. And he's

  895. showing us

  896. how Jesus

  897. is the

  898. fulfillment

  899. of everything

  900. the Old

  901. Testament was

  902. looking forward

  903. to.

  904. So here

  905. calling Jesus

  906. the Lamb

  907. of God,

  908. he's

  909. specifically

  910. referencing

  911. all the

  912. Old Testament

  913. language that

  914. dealt with

  915. sacrifice.

  916. Abraham

  917. brought Isaac

  918. up to the

  919. mountain,

  920. prepared to

  921. sacrifice his

  922. son in

  923. obedience to

  924. the Lord,

  925. and what

  926. happened?

  927. The Lord

  928. himself provided

  929. a sacrifice,

  930. a ram,

  931. caught in

  932. the bush.

  933. In Exodus,

  934. God told the

  935. Israelites in

  936. Egypt to put

  937. the blood of

  938. the Lamb on

  939. the doorpost

  940. of their

  941. home,

  942. and those

  943. who were

  944. covered by

  945. the blood

  946. of the Lamb

  947. were spared.

  948. Those who

  949. were not

  950. suffered the

  951. wrath of

  952. God.

  953. At the

  954. Passover,

  955. the Lamb

  956. without blemish

  957. was to be

  958. offered to

  959. the Lord

  960. as a

  961. sacrifice.

  962. It was a

  963. substitute to

  964. bear the

  965. wrath of

  966. God and

  967. cover the

  968. sins of

  969. the people.

  970. And of

  971. course,

  972. we know

  973. Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  974. chapter 53,

  975. one of the

  976. clearest and

  977. most beautiful

  978. passages,

  979. of Scripture

  980. pointing us

  981. forward towards

  982. the sacrifice

  983. of Christ,

  984. written 700

  985. years before

  986. Jesus ever

  987. stepped foot

  988. on the

  989. earth.

  990. He was

  991. oppressed

  992. and he was

  993. afflicted,

  994. yet he opened

  995. not his

  996. mouth.

  997. Like a

  998. lamb that

  999. is led to

  1000. the slaughter,

  1001. and like

  1002. sheep that

  1003. before its

  1004. shearers is

  1005. silent, so

  1006. he opened

  1007. not his

  1008. mouth.

  1009. all of

  1010. this is

  1011. language of

  1012. sin and

  1013. sacrifice and

  1014. substitution.

  1015. If you want

  1016. to understand

  1017. who Jesus

  1018. is and what

  1019. he came to

  1020. do, we need

  1021. to remember

  1022. these three

  1023. words.

  1024. In my

  1025. place.

  1026. In my

  1027. place.

  1028. That's what

  1029. substitute means,

  1030. isn't it?

  1031. There's

  1032. something

  1033. happening in

  1034. my place.

  1035. Jesus Christ,

  1036. if we want

  1037. to understand

  1038. who he is,

  1039. what he's

  1040. done, we

  1041. need to know

  1042. he lived

  1043. perfectly in

  1044. my place.

  1045. That he

  1046. died in

  1047. my place.

  1048. That he

  1049. bore the

  1050. wrath of

  1051. God for

  1052. my sin.

  1053. In my

  1054. place.

  1055. That he

  1056. rose up

  1057. from the

  1058. grave,

  1059. defeating

  1060. sin,

  1061. defeating

  1062. death,

  1063. defeating

  1064. the enemy.

  1065. in my

  1066. place.

  1067. Listen, we

  1068. cannot

  1069. understand who

  1070. Jesus is

  1071. apart from

  1072. understanding

  1073. that it

  1074. was in

  1075. my

  1076. place.

  1077. As a

  1078. sacrifice

  1079. and a

  1080. substitute.

  1081. You all

  1082. know the

  1083. hymn,

  1084. What Can

  1085. Wash

  1086. Away My

  1087. Sin?

  1088. Y'all can

  1089. do better

  1090. than that.

  1091. What can

  1092. make me

  1093. whole again

  1094. is nothing

  1095. but the

  1096. blood of

  1097. Jesus.

  1098. I read an

  1099. article this

  1100. week about

  1101. the origin

  1102. of that

  1103. hymn.

  1104. That's one

  1105. of my

  1106. favorite

  1107. hymns.

  1108. Robert

  1109. Lowry,

  1110. he wrote

  1111. that song

  1112. in 1876.

  1113. He introduced

  1114. it at the

  1115. Ocean Grove

  1116. Campsite in

  1117. New Jersey.

  1118. And revival

  1119. broke out.

  1120. The following

  1121. summer, over

  1122. 710,000 train

  1123. tickets were

  1124. sold.

  1125. Christians from

  1126. all over were

  1127. making the

  1128. journey to

  1129. Ocean Grove

  1130. to gather

  1131. and to

  1132. worship and

  1133. to sing

  1134. about the

  1135. blood of

  1136. Jesus that

  1137. covers their

  1138. sin.

  1139. Nothing can

  1140. for sin

  1141. atone.

  1142. Nothing but

  1143. the blood of

  1144. Jesus.

  1145. Not of good

  1146. that I have

  1147. done.

  1148. Nothing but

  1149. the blood of

  1150. Jesus.

  1151. But then I

  1152. got to the

  1153. end of the

  1154. article and I

  1155. saw something

  1156. that really

  1157. bothered me.

  1158. It said,

  1159. singing about

  1160. the blood of

  1161. Jesus may

  1162. offend the

  1163. sensibilities of

  1164. many 21st

  1165. century singers

  1166. and as a

  1167. result causes

  1168. them to

  1169. reject any

  1170. hymn that

  1171. mentions blood.

  1172. I'm sorry

  1173. if your 21st

  1174. century sensibilities

  1175. are offended

  1176. by talking so

  1177. much about

  1178. blood.

  1179. But God is

  1180. offended by

  1181. your sin.

  1182. And without

  1183. the shedding of

  1184. blood, there

  1185. is no remission

  1186. for sins.

  1187. Unless Jesus

  1188. Christ, the

  1189. Lamb of God,

  1190. is slain for

  1191. you, unless

  1192. His blood

  1193. covers you,

  1194. you will

  1195. bear the

  1196. wrath of

  1197. God for

  1198. your sin.

  1199. Wouldn't

  1200. you like a

  1201. substitute to

  1202. step in to

  1203. your place?

  1204. John says

  1205. that is what

  1206. Christ has

  1207. done.

  1208. This is not a

  1209. side issue of

  1210. Christianity,

  1211. church.

  1212. This is at the

  1213. very heart of

  1214. the gospel.

  1215. We don't need

  1216. a Christ who's

  1217. just a good

  1218. example.

  1219. We need a

  1220. Lamb of God

  1221. who will die

  1222. in our place

  1223. and cover us

  1224. with His

  1225. blood.

  1226. Not only

  1227. that.

  1228. John says

  1229. He is also

  1230. the Spirit

  1231. filled,

  1232. Spirit

  1233. giver.

  1234. Verse 33

  1235. tells us that

  1236. God had

  1237. revealed to

  1238. John previously,

  1239. we don't have

  1240. that conversation

  1241. here, but He

  1242. had revealed to

  1243. John previously

  1244. that He on

  1245. whom you see

  1246. the Spirit

  1247. descend and

  1248. remain.

  1249. This is He

  1250. who baptizes

  1251. with the

  1252. Holy Spirit.

  1253. This was how

  1254. God planned

  1255. to visibly

  1256. and powerfully

  1257. affirm the

  1258. unique Spirit

  1259. filled ministry

  1260. of the Messiah.

  1261. Again,

  1262. throughout the

  1263. Old Testament,

  1264. the Spirit of

  1265. God would

  1266. come on to

  1267. people,

  1268. come upon

  1269. people,

  1270. empower them

  1271. for a time,

  1272. but it

  1273. did not

  1274. remain.

  1275. It would

  1276. come and

  1277. it would

  1278. go,

  1279. it was in

  1280. and it

  1281. was out,

  1282. it was

  1283. temporary.

  1284. But again,

  1285. because Jesus

  1286. is who He

  1287. is,

  1288. because He

  1289. is God

  1290. Himself

  1291. in the

  1292. flesh,

  1293. God the

  1294. Father,

  1295. God the

  1296. Son,

  1297. God the

  1298. Holy Spirit,

  1299. He is one

  1300. with the

  1301. Spirit.

  1302. He is

  1303. Spirit filled

  1304. in a way

  1305. that no one

  1306. before Him

  1307. ever was.

  1308. the Spirit,

  1309. it doesn't

  1310. just come

  1311. and go

  1312. from Jesus,

  1313. it descends

  1314. on Him

  1315. and it

  1316. remains.

  1317. But John

  1318. says one

  1319. step further,

  1320. the Spirit

  1321. doesn't remain

  1322. and stay

  1323. there.

  1324. John says

  1325. this Spirit

  1326. filled Messiah

  1327. baptizes

  1328. with the

  1329. Holy Spirit.

  1330. He gives

  1331. the Holy

  1332. Spirit to

  1333. all who

  1334. come to

  1335. Him in

  1336. faith.

  1337. See,

  1338. John's

  1339. baptism was

  1340. temporary,

  1341. it was

  1342. external,

  1343. it was a

  1344. sign of

  1345. cleansing and

  1346. repentance,

  1347. it washed

  1348. the body.

  1349. But the

  1350. baptism that

  1351. Jesus gives,

  1352. John says,

  1353. to all who

  1354. know Him

  1355. in faith,

  1356. is permanent,

  1357. internal,

  1358. total,

  1359. complete

  1360. cleansing and

  1361. renewal by

  1362. the power of

  1363. the Holy

  1364. Spirit.

  1365. John says,

  1366. I baptize

  1367. with water.

  1368. He baptizes

  1369. with the

  1370. Spirit.

  1371. This is what

  1372. Ezekiel

  1373. promised in

  1374. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  1375. chapter 36,

  1376. what we call

  1377. the new

  1378. covenant.

  1379. He says,

  1380. I will give

  1381. you a new

  1382. heart and a

  1383. new spirit I

  1384. will put

  1385. within you.

  1386. Now I will

  1387. remove the

  1388. heart of

  1389. stone from

  1390. your flesh

  1391. and give

  1392. you a

  1393. heart of

  1394. flesh and

  1395. I will put

  1396. my spirit

  1397. within you

  1398. and cause

  1399. you to

  1400. walk in

  1401. my statutes

  1402. and to be

  1403. careful to

  1404. obey my

  1405. rules.

  1406. I have

  1407. been asked

  1408. before whether

  1409. or not I

  1410. believe in

  1411. baptism of

  1412. the Holy

  1413. Spirit.

  1414. And I

  1415. say,

  1416. absolutely.

  1417. But then I

  1418. have to

  1419. clarify because

  1420. that doctrine

  1421. has been so

  1422. confused and

  1423. twisted and

  1424. turned that

  1425. we have to

  1426. understand exactly

  1427. what that

  1428. means.

  1429. So let me

  1430. be clear.

  1431. Baptism with

  1432. the Holy

  1433. Spirit is not

  1434. for a select

  1435. few Christians

  1436. out of all

  1437. of the church.

  1438. It's not a

  1439. second later

  1440. event sometime

  1441. after your

  1442. conversion as

  1443. if you get

  1444. some spirit

  1445. now and then

  1446. you might level

  1447. up later as

  1448. you get holier

  1449. and more serious

  1450. in your faith.

  1451. No, this is

  1452. for everyone

  1453. in Christ.

  1454. Everyone in

  1455. Christ, everyone

  1456. who belongs to

  1457. Christ has the

  1458. Spirit of God

  1459. in them

  1460. in full.

  1461. Now our

  1462. experience of

  1463. that Spirit,

  1464. our walking

  1465. with Him,

  1466. our dependence

  1467. upon Him can

  1468. ebb and flow

  1469. with the

  1470. trajectory of

  1471. our life and

  1472. our dependence

  1473. upon Him,

  1474. but it's not a

  1475. question of

  1476. whether you

  1477. have the

  1478. Spirit.

  1479. If you are

  1480. in Christ,

  1481. you have

  1482. the Spirit.

  1483. This is what

  1484. Paul says in

  1485. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1486. 8.

  1487. If you want

  1488. to know what

  1489. a gift you've

  1490. been given in

  1491. the Holy Spirit,

  1492. go home this

  1493. afternoon and

  1494. read Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1495. chapter 8.

  1496. I can't read

  1497. it all right

  1498. this minute,

  1499. but I'll

  1500. summarize it

  1501. for you.

  1502. This is what

  1503. he says.

  1504. You, however,

  1505. talking to

  1506. believers,

  1507. are not in

  1508. the flesh,

  1509. but in the

  1510. Spirit.

  1511. Two types

  1512. of people in

  1513. the world,

  1514. two types

  1515. of people in

  1516. this room.

  1517. There are

  1518. flesh people,

  1519. there are

  1520. spirit people.

  1521. He says,

  1522. you are not

  1523. in the flesh,

  1524. but in the

  1525. Spirit,

  1526. if in fact

  1527. the Spirit

  1528. of God

  1529. dwells in

  1530. you.

  1531. Listen to

  1532. this.

  1533. Anyone who

  1534. does not

  1535. have the

  1536. Spirit of

  1537. Christ does

  1538. not belong

  1539. to him.

  1540. He says,

  1541. I'm summarizing

  1542. here,

  1543. he says,

  1544. the Spirit,

  1545. he sets us

  1546. free from

  1547. condemnation and

  1548. guilt.

  1549. The Spirit

  1550. wages war

  1551. against the

  1552. flesh.

  1553. The Spirit

  1554. puts to

  1555. death the

  1556. deeds of the

  1557. body.

  1558. The Spirit

  1559. renews our

  1560. minds.

  1561. The Spirit

  1562. leads us in

  1563. holiness.

  1564. The Spirit

  1565. leads us to

  1566. delight in

  1567. the Lord.

  1568. The Spirit

  1569. bears witness

  1570. with our

  1571. spirit that we

  1572. are sons of

  1573. God.

  1574. The Spirit

  1575. helps us in

  1576. our weakness.

  1577. The Spirit

  1578. prays on our

  1579. behalf when we

  1580. don't know how

  1581. to pray or

  1582. what to pray.

  1583. The Spirit

  1584. himself intercedes

  1585. for us according

  1586. to the will of

  1587. God.

  1588. The Spirit

  1589. gifts us for

  1590. ministry.

  1591. The Spirit

  1592. convicts us of

  1593. sin.

  1594. The Spirit

  1595. bears the fruit

  1596. of godliness

  1597. in our lives.

  1598. The Spirit

  1599. stirs up love

  1600. for Christ

  1601. in us.

  1602. And we

  1603. think we

  1604. can live the

  1605. Christian life

  1606. according to

  1607. the flesh.

  1608. Church, the

  1609. Christian life

  1610. is impossible

  1611. apart from

  1612. his Spirit.

  1613. And John

  1614. says, come

  1615. to Christ.

  1616. All I can

  1617. do is clean

  1618. you with water,

  1619. but Christ

  1620. will baptize

  1621. you with the

  1622. Holy Spirit.

  1623. This Jesus

  1624. is a

  1625. substitutionary

  1626. sacrifice.

  1627. He is the

  1628. Spirit-filled

  1629. Spirit-giver.

  1630. Who else

  1631. can he be

  1632. but the

  1633. Son of God?

  1634. This is

  1635. how John

  1636. concludes

  1637. his testimony.

  1638. Here in

  1639. verse 34,

  1640. he says,

  1641. I have

  1642. seen and

  1643. borne witness

  1644. that this

  1645. is the

  1646. Son

  1647. of God.

  1648. We're told

  1649. in Matthew

  1650. 3 that when

  1651. Jesus was

  1652. baptized,

  1653. he went down

  1654. into the

  1655. water and

  1656. as he came

  1657. up out

  1658. of the

  1659. water after

  1660. 400 years

  1661. of silence,

  1662. everyone there

  1663. heard the

  1664. voice of

  1665. God.

  1666. This is one

  1667. of only three

  1668. times in the

  1669. New Testament

  1670. that God

  1671. speaks audibly

  1672. for everybody

  1673. to hear.

  1674. It's at the

  1675. baptism of

  1676. Christ,

  1677. this is my

  1678. beloved Son

  1679. in whom I

  1680. am well

  1681. pleased.

  1682. It's at his

  1683. transfiguration

  1684. of Christ,

  1685. this is my

  1686. beloved Son,

  1687. listen to him.

  1688. And it's in the

  1689. final week of

  1690. Jesus'

  1691. earthly life,

  1692. I have glorified

  1693. your name and

  1694. I will do it

  1695. again.

  1696. What do you

  1697. think God

  1698. wants us

  1699. to hear?

  1700. All three

  1701. times,

  1702. he points

  1703. our attention

  1704. to the

  1705. glory of

  1706. Jesus as

  1707. the Christ,

  1708. the only

  1709. Son of

  1710. God.

  1711. He wants

  1712. us,

  1713. he wants

  1714. you to

  1715. listen to

  1716. him,

  1717. to believe

  1718. in him,

  1719. to trust

  1720. him,

  1721. to love

  1722. him,

  1723. to share

  1724. him,

  1725. to behold

  1726. him.

  1727. That's

  1728. exactly what

  1729. John calls

  1730. us to do.

  1731. How do we

  1732. respond to

  1733. a man like

  1734. this?

  1735. With the

  1736. eyes of

  1737. spiritual sight

  1738. by the power

  1739. of the Holy

  1740. Spirit Church,

  1741. we must

  1742. behold

  1743. him.

  1744. Behold

  1745. the Lamb

  1746. of God.

  1747. Behold

  1748. the Lamb

  1749. of God

  1750. who takes

  1751. away the

  1752. sin of

  1753. the world.

  1754. But please

  1755. don't be

  1756. content to

  1757. just hear

  1758. this and

  1759. understand in

  1760. your mind

  1761. who Jesus

  1762. is.

  1763. You must

  1764. behold him

  1765. by faith

  1766. in your

  1767. heart.

  1768. Apply the

  1769. gospel to

  1770. yourself.

  1771. church.

  1772. To know

  1773. that everything

  1774. he did,

  1775. he did

  1776. on your

  1777. behalf.

  1778. Know that

  1779. Christ Jesus

  1780. came to

  1781. take away

  1782. the sin

  1783. of the

  1784. world,

  1785. but trust

  1786. that Christ

  1787. came to

  1788. take my

  1789. sin.

  1790. Jesus came

  1791. to take

  1792. away the

  1793. sin of

  1794. Jonathan

  1795. love and

  1796. have been

1797. To be forgiven in my place.

1798. Know that Christ is the spirit-filled spirit giver.

  1799. But look to him.

  1800. Come to him.

  1801. Behold him.

  1802. Depend on him daily.

  1803. Abide in him.

  1804. Walk in him.

1805. Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit at work in you.

  1806. Sanctifying.

  1807. Purifying.

  1808. Convicting.

  1809. Leading you.

  1810. Christ in us.

  1811. The hope of glory.

  1812. And know.

1813. Know that Christ is the beloved son of God.

1814. But behold him by faith and rejoice.

1815. To all who received him.

  1816. He gave the right.

1817. To become children of God.

1818. And by his grace you.

  1819. Are a son.

  1820. And a daughter.

  1821. Of Christ.

1822. Son and daughter of God.

  1823. God.

  1824. Good news like this.

  1825. Church should.

  1826. Humble us.

1827. And it should compel us.

  1828. To lower ourselves.

  1829. To point to Jesus.

  1830. To invite others.

1831. To come and to behold the glory.

  1832. Of God.

  1833. Let's pray.

  1834. Amen.

  1835. Amen.

  1836. Amen.

  1837. God.

1838. We thank you for the good news of the gospel.

1839. That Christ came to take away the sin of the world.

  1840. Lord.

1841. We pray that we would trust that to be true for us.

  1842. Specifically.

1843. That the blood of Christ would wash away our sin.

  1844. And Lord.

  1845. When we realize that.

1846. The gift that we've been given.

1847. As we walk according to the spirit.

  1848. Lord.

  1849. Make us humble.

  1850. And make us joyfully.

  1851. Joyfully missional.

1852. As we proclaim the glory of God.

1853. To those who've never heard.

1854. We pray this in Jesus name.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Amen.

  1857. Amen.

  1858. Amen.

  1859. Amen.

  1860. Amen.

  1861. Amen.

  1862. Amen.

  1863. Amen.

  1864. Amen.

  1865. Amen.

  1866. Amen.

  1867. Amen.

  1868. Amen.

  1869. Amen.

  1870. Amen.

  1871. Amen.

  1872. Amen.

  1873. Amen.

  1874. Amen.

  1875. Amen.

  1876. Amen.
