  1. Well, it's my privilege to have the chance to preach this morning, and I will continue

  2. in the book of John like Jonathan just said.

  3. We'll continue in chapter 1, and we'll finish chapter 1 today.

  4. But I do want to mention this, that when we were reading, or when the passage from Genesis

  5. was read, did you catch that last phrase?

  6. That last phrase says, Jehovah's in this place.

  7. You know, the Word of God declares this, where two or more are gathered in His name, there

  8. He is in the midst.

  9. And so it's this morning we come with this understanding that Jehovah's in this place, and it's my prayer

  10. that the words of Jehovah, through His Word, would touch us deeply.

  11. So this morning we turn to chapter 1, and we're going to read starting in verse 35, but before

  12. I read, I just want to share a couple of things about this passage and about this chapter 1.

  13. I don't know if you would have picked it up unless you've dug a little bit to see this,

  14. but do you realize that the place where John is baptizing, this place on the east side of

  15. the Jordan is roughly 20 miles from Jerusalem, and it's roughly 85 miles to Bethsaida.

  16. Now why would I share that?

  17. Why is this geography important?

  18. Because what we see is we see these men, what will be introduced to these men, Andrew and

  19. Philip and Peter, Nathaniel, will be introduced to these men this morning.

  20. And it's interesting to note that they're from Bethsaida, which is on the northern side

  21. of the Sea of Galilee, roughly 85 miles.

  22. And in that day, it takes a long time to travel 85 miles, and it begs the question, why are

  23. you down there?

  24. Why are you spending time with John?

  25. What is the occasion?

  26. And what we can glean here is that they're by foot roughly five days journey down to this

  27. area, and they're disciples of John the Baptist, meaning they consider him their rabbi.

  28. They have sat at his feet to learn from him.

  29. And it means evidently that they had spent some measure of time with him, so they had been

  30. following him for quite some time.

  31. They were seekers of truth.

  32. You know what's interesting?

  33. That these blue-collar guys, these rough guys, these fishermen, you know they didn't go to

  34. Jerusalem to find the rabbis in Jerusalem, to find the greatest of the Pharisees or the

  35. greatest of the Sadducees.

  36. They didn't even go to the synagogue to seek truth.

  37. You know where they went?

  38. They went where God had stirred them, to this guy who's in the wilderness who's preaching

  39. this message of repentance.

  40. There's something in them that was stirred by the truth that was being proclaimed by this

  41. guy who dressed differently.

  42. He didn't have the religious garb that most would have.

  43. He wasn't looking for the applause of men.

  44. He didn't wear tassels on the bottom of his garment.

  45. But he had come proclaiming a gospel of the coming Messiah.

  46. And they were drawn to it.

  47. They were seeking truth.

  48. And I think that's important for us to understand as we look at these encounters.

  49. This morning we're going to look at five encounters with Jesus.

  50. From the text we read this morning we'll see four, but I'm going to back up a little bit

  51. and we're going to talk about the encounter of John the Baptist with Christ as well.

  52. That would be five encounters with Christ.

  53. And it's my hope this morning that we consider if we've had an encounter with Jesus.

  54. And if we have had an encounter with Jesus, what did he say to us?

  55. What is it that stirred in our hearts when we had this encounter with Jesus?

  56. And it's in my hope that as believers, for those of us who are in the kingdom, born again,

  57. that we would not just have one encounter with Jesus, but it would be continual.

  58. That we would fellowship with the Lord often.

  59. So if you would turn to verse 35 in chapter 1,

  60. as we read from the scriptures this morning, I would ask you to follow along.

  61. It's my hope that you would bring your Bible and you would be so familiar with your Bible

  62. that you would not want to leave it at home.

  63. That it would be with you often.

  64. And hopefully the pages would get quite fragile because you've turned there so many times.

  65. And hopefully you've got highlights and notes and such in your Bible

  66. because you treasure the time you spend there.

  67. This is the very word of God we read, starting in verse 35, and it says this.

  68. The next day, that is the day after the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.

  69. The next day, again, John was standing with two of his disciples

  70. and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said,

  71. Behold, the Lamb of God.

  72. The two disciples heard him say this and they followed Jesus.

  73. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them,

  74. What are you seeking?

  75. And they said to him, Rabbi, where are you staying?

  76. He said to them, Come and you will see.

  77. So they came and they saw where he was staying

  78. and they stayed with him that day for it was about the tenth hour.

  79. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

  80. He first found his own brother Simon and he said to him,

  81. We have found the Messiah, which means Christ.

  82. And he brought him to Jesus.

  83. Jesus looked at him and said,

  84. You are Simon, the son of John.

  85. You shall be called Cephas, which means Peter or rock.

  86. The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee.

  87. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me.

  88. Now, Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

  89. Philip found Nathanael and said to him,

  90. We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote,

  91. Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

  92. Nathanael said, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?

  93. Philip said to him, Come and see.

  94. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said,

  95. Behold, an Israelite indeed in whom there is no deceit.

  96. Nathanael said to him, How do you know me?

  97. Jesus answered him,

  98. Before Philip called you,

  99. When you were under the fig tree, I saw you.

  100. Nathanael answered him,

  101. Rabbi, you are the son of God.

  102. You are the king of Israel.

  103. Jesus answered him,

  104. Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe?

  105. You will see greater things than these.

  106. And he said to him,

  107. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  108. You will see heaven opened

  109. and the angels of God ascending and descending on the son of man.

  110. Let's pray again.

  111. Father, this morning I ask that you would open our spiritual eyes,

  112. that as we look at your word,

  113. we would see your truth for what it is,

  114. and you would open our understanding.

  115. God, as we read, we would understand the truths here.

  116. And God, I pray that you would touch our heart with your word.

  117. Father, may your word plant itself deep within our heart.

  118. This morning may your word move us to desire you,

  119. and to seek you more,

  120. and to follow you,

  121. and to love you,

  122. and to serve you.

  123. And I pray in your name.

  124. Amen.

  125. I want you to see this about the encounter of John with Jesus.

  126. It would help us to understand what John thinks about himself,

  127. who John sees himself to be.

  128. Very interesting in the word.

  129. It says this,

  130. John says this in verse 23,

  131. I am the voice.

  132. I am the voice.

  133. What voice, John?

  134. I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness.

  135. Make straight the way of the Lord,

  136. as the prophet Isaiah said.

  137. Do you hear what he's saying about himself?

  138. He's saying this,

  139. that the prophet Isaiah foretold of this guy

  140. who was coming before the Messiah,

  141. and this guy was going to be a voice in the wilderness,

  142. and he was going to be proclaiming a message.

  143. Before Jesus the Messiah came.

  144. If we look at Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  145. Mark starts his gospel talking about this voice.

  146. And Mark says it like this.

  147. Chapter 1, he says,

  148. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  149. the Son of God,

  150. as it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

  151. Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

  152. who will prepare your way.

  153. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  154. prepare the way of the Lord.

  155. Make his paths straight.

  156. John appeared baptizing in the wilderness

  157. and proclaiming a baptism of repentance

  158. for the forgiveness of sins.

  159. I want you to notice something here.

  160. Mark shares with us something vital

  161. that we need to understand about John.

  162. He says this,

  163. Behold, this God speaking,

  164. Behold, he's speaking through his prophet Isaiah,

  165. and he says,

  166. Behold, I send.

  167. I send.

  168. God sent.

  169. John the Baptist was sent by God,

  170. and John knew it.

  171. John realized that he had been sent by God.

  172. And notice what he says about John.

  173. He says,

  174. My messenger.

  175. Behold, I send my messenger.

  176. The person that I have moved in his life,

  177. the person that I have put my words in his mouth,

  178. it's that person that I've sent

  179. to be the forerunner of the Messiah.

  180. It's John.

  181. And he is a voice crying in the wilderness.

  182. It's interesting.

  183. He's crying in the wilderness,

  184. not in the synagogue.

  185. Not in the temple.

  186. He's crying in the wilderness.

  187. It's John who's not dressed like rabbis.

  188. It's John who doesn't act like rabbis.

  189. It's John who's not religious.

  190. He's not part of the religious system.

  191. It's this guy who's coming out of the wilderness,

  192. likely a nomadic scenario

  193. where he's been in the wilderness.

  194. Do you all realize his parents were very old when he was born?

  195. It was a miraculous birth.

  196. Do you all remember Elizabeth?

  197. She who was barren,

  198. who was the laughing stock of their city,

  199. their town,

  200. who obviously had not been blessed by God

  201. because she was barren.

  202. You know that barren women were pushed to the sidelines of society?

  203. And in her old age,

  204. through much prayer,

  205. you can be sure,

  206. from her and her husband,

  207. Zechariah,

  208. she became pregnant.

  209. In her old age.

  210. Miraculous.

  211. It can't happen.

  212. Can it?

  213. Nothing's impossible for God.

  214. And what did she do?

  215. Paraded around town?

  216. No,

  217. she stayed in her house.

  218. And she said,

  219. this is too good to be true.

  220. And Mary,

  221. the mother of the coming Messiah,

  222. received this encounter from an angel,

  223. Gabriel,

  224. who said,

  225. and by the way,

  226. your relative Elizabeth is with child.

  227. And in her excitement,

  228. she leaves and she goes down to the city where her relative stays.

  229. And as she's walking across the threshold of the door,

  230. Elizabeth prophesies.

  231. And you know what she prophesied?

  232. You know what she said?

  233. She said exactly what God put in her mouth.

  234. And what did God put in her mouth?

  235. Who am I?

  236. That the mother of my Lord.

  237. God.

  238. I'm going to turn there so I don't mess it up.

  239. And why is it granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

  240. For behold,

  241. when the sound of your greeting came to my ears,

  242. the baby,

  243. John the Baptist,

  244. leaped in my womb.

  245. And it has a nice little phrase at the end.

  246. You remember what it says?

  247. Leaped in my womb for joy.

  248. Do you know in the womb of Elizabeth was John the Baptist?

  249. Who leaped when the Messiah arrived.

  250. You know,

  251. there's something strongly spiritual about that,

  252. isn't there?

  253. So I want you to hear from Luke 1

  254. what John the Baptist's father prophesied about him.

  255. So you understand that Elizabeth and Zechariah were very old in age.

  256. Likely,

  257. John was very young when they passed away.

  258. And so he would have been raised by relatives,

  259. possibly been raised by relatives.

  260. There's no way to know this for sure.

  261. But there's evidence that would lead us to think that perhaps he was raised in a nomadic setting in the wilderness.

  262. That's what nomads did.

  263. They wandered in the wilderness so their flocks could be fed.

  264. No way to know for sure.

  265. But it is interesting that he wasn't surrounded by the religious system.

  266. He was free to be led by God.

  267. And Zechariah shares something of importance with us that I want you to hear this morning.

  268. So Zechariah,

  269. you'll remember the story.

  270. He goes into the holy place.

  271. It was the greatest gift of life for a priest to be allowed to have the privilege to go and walk in.

  272. And he took incense to put on the altar,

  273. which represents the prayers of the saints.

  274. And he goes in and he puts incense on the altar.

  275. And what happens?

  276. He has an encounter,

  277. doesn't he?

  278. And in that encounter,

  279. he is mute.

  280. He can't speak.

  281. As he walks out,

  282. he was greeted by an angel in that setting.

  283. He walks out.

  284. He can't talk anymore.

  285. And he doesn't talk again until when?

  286. Until his son,

  287. John the Baptist,

  288. is dedicated on the eighth day.

  289. So can you picture this?

  290. The first words out of his mouth are not even his words.

  291. He prophesies as the Holy Spirit moves upon him.

  292. And he speaks these words.

  293. He talks about Christ and the Messiah.

  294. And then in verse 76 of chapter 1 of Luke,

  295. it says this,

  296. And you, child,

  297. I can just picture him holding this child in his hands.

  298. John the Baptist,

  299. his eight-day-old son in his old age.

  300. Can you imagine

  301. waiting all those years for a child

  302. and his child to be born?

  303. And he's holding his child here.

  304. And his mouth has been mute.

  305. And when he opens it up,

  306. God's word spills out of his mouth.

  307. And he says,

  308. And you, child,

  309. you will be called prophet,

  310. the prophet of the Most High.

  311. There's a lot in that phrase.

  312. The prophet of the Most High.

  313. For you will go before the Lord to prepare his way

  314. to give knowledge of salvation to his people

  315. in the forgiveness of their sins.

  316. Wow.

  317. Now, John's eight days old,

  318. and I doubt he remembers hearing that.

  319. But don't you know

  320. that Elizabeth and Zechariah

  321. sensed this powerful movement of God,

  322. this miraculous thing that God is doing

  323. in the life of John the Baptist?

  324. And we go back,

  325. and I want you to see this

  326. about John the Baptist.

  327. And we're getting to the encounter.

  328. We're not to the encounter yet,

  329. because I want you to realize

  330. these things.

  331. Is that John is a prophet.

  332. And you remember what Christ said

  333. about John the Baptist?

  334. Listen to what he said.

  335. What did you go in the wilderness to see?

  336. You know what the people were doing?

  337. They heard about this guy

  338. who was so different,

  339. radically different

  340. than any other religious message

  341. they'd ever heard.

  342. And word began to spread in that culture,

  343. and people began to go to him

  344. from all kind of places

  345. to where he was baptizing.

  346. And they were hearing the message

  347. of John the Baptist,

  348. and Christ asked this question

  349. to his disciples.

  350. He says this,

  351. What did you go out

  352. to the wilderness to see?

  353. A prophet?

  354. Yes, I tell you.

  355. And more than a prophet.

  356. You hear what he says there?

  357. Christ said,

  358. yes, he was a prophet.

  359. He was the spokesperson for God.

  360. You know what a prophet is?

  361. Prophet is one that God chooses

  362. to speak through to the people.

  363. God moves in their heart

  364. to put his message in their heart.

  365. They open their mouths,

  366. and the word of God

  367. spills out of their mouth.

  368. The Holy Spirit

  369. is the one that speaks

  370. to these men.

  371. He is more than a prophet.

  372. This is he, him,

  373. the one

  374. that is written about.

  375. Behold, I send my messenger

  376. before your face,

  377. who will prepare your way

  378. before you.

  379. Truly, I say to you,

  380. and we've heard this before

  381. in the book of John,

  382. as Jonathan was preaching,

  383. I say to you,

  384. among those born of women,

  385. there has arisen

  386. no one greater

  387. than John the Baptist.

  388. And remember what it is

  389. to be great in the kingdom of God?

  390. Go lower.

  391. Go lower.

  392. Do you think John saw himself

  393. as someone who was low?

  394. Listen to what it says.

  395. Listen to it.

  396. He said he knows about himself,

  397. these things,

  398. that he is that voice,

  399. that he is the person

  400. that was prophesied about

  401. in the Old Testament.

  402. He is the one.

  403. And it's validated

  404. by the Holy Spirit

  405. through Zechariah,

  406. his father.

  407. He is the voice

  408. from the wilderness.

  409. And if you look down

  410. to verse 33,

  411. chapter 1,

  412. it says,

  413. I myself did not know him.

  414. That is,

  415. in the natural,

  416. I've never seen Jesus before.

  417. I didn't know who he was.

  418. I could not have

  419. visibly recognized him.

  420. Though he saw him,

  421. in a sense,

  422. saw him,

  423. experienced him

  424. in the womb of Elizabeth

  425. when Jesus walked

  426. across the threshold,

  427. he had never seen him

  428. with his eyes.

  429. He said,

  430. I myself did not know him,

  431. but he who sent me

  432. said to me.

  433. Y'all realize

  434. the importance of that phrase?

  435. He who sent me,

  436. who sent him?

  437. John,

  438. you remember in Mark?

  439. It said this,

  440. Behold,

  441. I send my messenger.

  442. You know what it is?

  443. It's God's messenger

  444. with God's message.

  445. John is the messenger

  446. sent by God.

  447. He says,

  448. I'm the voice,

  449. and he who sent me

  450. said to me,

  451. you know what?

  452. God spoke

  453. to John the Baptist.

  454. God validated

  455. to John the Baptist

  456. who was the Christ.

  457. Christ.

  458. And what was the response

  459. of John the Baptist

  460. when he saw Jesus?

  461. Behold,

  462. the Lamb of God.

  463. Let me just ask this

  464. of you and I.

  465. Is that true for us?

  466. Have you seen Jesus?

  467. Have you experienced Jesus?

  468. When you walk away

  469. from your experience

  470. with Christ,

  471. do you find yourself

  472. saying,

  473. Behold,

  474. the Lamb of God.

  475. There He is.

  476. Do you find yourself

  477. pointing at Jesus?

  478. Do you find yourself

  479. sharing it with people

  480. you come in contact with?

  481. There He is.

  482. You need Jesus.

  483. We all need Jesus.

  484. Do you think

  485. with John understanding

  486. who He was,

  487. and with John

  488. receiving these words

  489. from God the Father,

  490. you would think

  491. that he would be tempted

  492. to think of himself

  493. more highly

  494. than he ought to think.

  495. Correct?

  496. I mean,

  497. he's in a role

  498. that he knows

  499. God has placed him in.

  500. But I want you to hear,

  501. oh man,

  502. I want you to hear

  503. the heart of John.

  504. He encounters Christ

  505. as the forerunner,

  506. the one that was called

  507. by God as a messenger.

  508. And here's the interaction.

  509. We see it a little differently

  510. through the eyes of Matthew.

  511. If we look in Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  512. listen to the encounter

  513. when Jesus comes to John

  514. to be baptized.

  515. Here it is.

  516. Then Jesus came from Galilee

  517. to the Jordan

  518. to John

  519. to be baptized by Him.

  520. John would have prevented it.

  521. Does that not strike you?

  522. John's like,

  523. no.

  524. I'm baptizing all these people.

  525. They need to repent.

  526. They need to be baptized.

  527. You don't need to be baptized.

  528. Who am I

  529. that you would even come to me?

  530. You remember what he said

  531. about the sandals of Jesus?

  532. I'm not worthy

  533. to be the lowest servant

  534. in the house of my God

  535. to even untie

  536. the latchet of the sandal

  537. of Jesus.

  538. I'm not worthy

  539. to be the lowest servant

  540. in the house of my God.

  541. Does that echo with you?

  542. How do we view ourselves?

  543. Are we going lower?

  544. Are we recognizing

  545. realizing more and more

  546. and more

  547. that apart from Jesus

  548. we're nothing?

  549. We don't deserve

  550. to be in the house

  551. of our God, do we?

  552. You know it's a gift

  553. for you and I

  554. that He gave us?

  555. That we would be allowed

  556. to be in the house

  557. of our God?

  558. That we would be allowed

  559. to be a servant

  560. in the house of our God?

  561. Listen to what happened.

  562. He said,

  563. John would have prevented

  564. him saying,

  565. I need to be baptized

  566. by you

  567. and you come to me?

  568. But Jesus answered,

  569. let it be so

  570. for now

  571. for thus it is fitting

  572. to fulfill

  573. all righteousness.

  574. Let me just make

  575. this point.

  576. Do you think

  577. that in that encounter

  578. John would have been

  579. in awe?

  580. I think right here

  581. it reveals

  582. that he's like

  583. it probably

  584. can't get words out

  585. to start with

  586. because

  587. the Holy Spirit

  588. or the Father

  589. is indicated

  590. there He is,

  591. there He is,

  592. there He is,

  593. there He is,

  594. He's coming,

  595. He's coming to you

  596. right now.

  597. That's Him.

  598. That's the Lamb of God

  599. and He's hearing all this

  600. and He knows it

  601. and He's like,

  602. I'm not worthy

  603. that you would come

  604. that close to me.

  605. Who am I

  606. that you would even

  607. approach me?

  608. And in awe

  609. He says,

  610. I understand

  611. who you are.

  612. I need to be baptized.

  613. I'm nothing.

  614. I'm nobody.

  615. So here's what I see.

  616. I see an awe

  617. in the heart

  618. of John the Baptist.

  619. This greatest

  620. of all

  621. who have ever

  622. been born by a woman.

  623. He is deeply

  624. humble.

  625. And He's obedient,

  626. isn't He?

  627. Though He knew

  628. that He should not

  629. baptize the Messiah,

  630. the Messiah said,

  631. I want you to baptize me.

  632. This is just the way

  633. it needs to be.

  634. Yes, Lord.

  635. You know,

  636. when we encounter Christ,

  637. is that the response

  638. that we have?

  639. Do we see ourselves

  640. for who we really are

  641. that we're nobody

  642. apart from Him?

  643. Do we shout,

  644. behold the Lamb of God?

  645. Is that something

  646. that often comes

  647. from our lips?

  648. Do people look at us

  649. and see,

  650. there's that guy,

  651. that radical dude,

  652. man.

  653. I wish he'd shut up

  654. sometimes.

  655. I'm tired of hearing

  656. him talk about Jesus

  657. all the time.

  658. Does that characterize

  659. the way we walk

  660. and the way we live

  661. and the way we interact

  662. with people?

  663. I hope it does.

  664. We move on here.

  665. So you can picture

  666. these two disciples

  667. of John

  668. who've been following Him

  669. and who've been

  670. learning from Him,

  671. who've been seeking

  672. truth,

  673. who've been seeking

  674. the Messiah,

  675. the Lord,

  676. the truth,

  677. the Father,

  678. and they're following

  679. John because they know

  680. something is

  681. from God.

  682. Something about John

  683. is from God.

  684. Something about John

  685. can't be explained.

  686. There's something

  687. supernatural going on here

  688. and they're following Him

  689. and you know what He says?

  690. Jesus walks by them

  691. and as He's walking by,

  692. He says to them,

  693. Behold,

  694. there He is,

  695. the Lamb of God.

  696. He says it again.

  697. He can't contain Himself.

  698. You know He had lived

  699. for this very day?

  700. Do y'all realize

  701. that John had lived

  702. all these years

  703. for that very day?

  704. Do you realize

  705. that was the purpose

  706. for which He was sent?

  707. That when Christ came

  708. and was baptized,

  709. do you realize

  710. that the purpose

  711. for John was fulfilled?

  712. And He makes a statement,

  713. He must increase,

  714. I must decrease.

  715. My role is finished.

  716. His role is beginning

  717. as the Messiah.

  718. And He turns,

  719. He says,

  720. there they are.

  721. And so what did

  722. the disciples do?

  723. They had come

  724. and they had learned,

  725. they knew something

  726. was supernatural about John.

  727. Would you depart from that?

  728. Would you leave?

  729. Wouldn't you want

  730. to be around John?

  731. This guy that absolutely

  732. is obvious that God

  733. is doing something

  734. incredible in his life.

  735. What did they do?

  736. They left.

  737. Listen to what it says.

  738. And He looked at Jesus,

  739. John the Baptist did,

  740. as He walked by and said,

  741. Behold the Lamb of God.

  742. The two disciples

  743. heard Him say this

  744. and they did what?

  745. They followed Jesus.

  746. Let me ask you this question.

  747. For all of us,

  748. you know,

  749. we live in the South.

  750. There's steeples

  751. all over town.

  752. You know,

  753. especially go look

  754. over the bridge

  755. or Avonel,

  756. you look down.

  757. Steeples,

  758. steeples,

  759. steeples,

  760. all over the place.

  761. Churches on most corners.

  762. You've heard about Jesus,

  763. haven't you?

  764. What is the effect

  765. in your heart

  766. when you've heard

  767. about Jesus,

  768. when Jesus has been

  769. presented to you,

  770. when you see Jesus

  771. in the pages of the Word,

  772. have you followed Him?

  773. Church,

  774. have you followed Him?

  775. Have you sought Him

  776. with all your heart?

  777. Are you seeking after Jesus

  778. to know Him?

  779. Not just to know about Him,

  780. not just to know doctrine.

  781. Do you want to know Him

  782. personally,

  783. deeply,

  784. intimately?

  785. He invites us all there.

  786. notice what it says.

  787. They followed Jesus

  788. and what did Jesus do?

  789. He had just walked by them,

  790. hadn't He?

  791. And they start following Him.

  792. What does He do?

  793. Do you realize that

  794. anybody who seeks Jesus,

  795. Jesus always turns?

  796. For anybody that is seeking,

  797. truly seeking,

  798. you know what He does?

  799. He turns.

  800. But it's an interesting question

  801. He throws their way.

  802. Do you know what the question is?

  803. In the text it says this,

  804. what are you seeking?

  805. Why are you following me?

  806. What are you doing?

  807. What is He asking?

  808. He's asking for their motive.

  809. Why do you want to spend time with me?

  810. What is your motive?

  811. You know,

  812. we can glimpse ahead

  813. to chapter 6.

  814. And it says this,

  815. when He had fed

  816. many in the wilderness

  817. and He left

  818. and He went to another place,

  819. a large crowd followed Jesus.

  820. You remember chapter 6.

  821. And Jesus answered them.

  822. He said,

  823. why did you,

  824. why have you come across

  825. to the other side of the sea?

  826. And He answered them and said,

  827. Jesus,

  828. He said,

  829. truly, truly,

  830. I say to you,

  831. you are seeking me

  832. not because you saw signs

  833. and saw something supernatural,

  834. but because you ate

  835. and you're in,

  836. excuse me,

  837. you ate your fill

  838. of the loaves.

  839. Their belly was full.

  840. They received food.

  841. They're chasing Him

  842. because He's a provider.

  843. He can provide for 5,000

  844. with a small handful of loaves

  845. and some fish.

  846. There's something supernatural

  847. about this guy.

  848. I love the fact

  849. that I can eat and be full.

  850. And they're chasing Him for why?

  851. For what they can get.

  852. You know what begs the question

  853. for you and me?

  854. Why are we following Jesus?

  855. Are we following Jesus

  856. for what we can get?

  857. Are we following Him

  858. for who He is?

  859. Jesus said to these,

  860. Do not work for food

  861. that perishes,

  862. but for the food

  863. that endures to eternal life.

  864. Don't live for the temporal.

  865. Live for the spiritual.

  866. Live for my kingdom.

  867. Live for me.

  868. And so they said to Him,

  869. Rabbi, where are you staying?

  870. In other words,

  871. wherever you're going,

  872. I'm going.

  873. Wherever you're staying,

  874. I'm staying.

  875. We want to be at Your feet.

  876. We want to be taught by You.

  877. We want to learn.

  878. We want to be in Your presence.

  879. We're hungry for You.

  880. We believe that You really are

  881. the Messiah.

  882. We've been looking for all these years

  883. and now we know it for sure

  884. that You're the One.

  885. We want to be with You.

  886. What did He say?

  887. Nah.

  888. Nah.

  889. I don't think you're ready.

  890. That isn't what He said, is He?

  891. He says, come.

  892. You know, for all who seek Him,

  893. you know what Jesus says?

  894. Come.

  895. Come.

  896. And when He says come,

  897. what is He going to show you?

  898. He's going to show you Himself.

  899. He's going to reveal to you

  900. something so powerful.

  901. Himself.

  902. The author of life.

  903. So they came and they saw

  904. where He was staying

  905. and they stayed with Him for a day

  906. and it was about the tenth hour.

  907. One of the two who heard Him speak

  908. followed Jesus and followed Jesus

  909. was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

  910. And what did Andrew do

  911. when he spent time with Jesus?

  912. What was the effect on Andrew?

  913. Do you notice?

  914. He left and went and found Simon

  915. and said, man, come on.

  916. Come on.

  917. You got to come, man.

  918. You don't want to miss out on this.

  919. He's right over there.

  920. Come on.

  921. Let's go.

  922. Let's go.

  923. And he takes his brother, Simon,

  924. and he does what?

  925. He takes him to Jesus.

  926. Do you know if we chased Andrew

  927. through the Gospels,

  928. you know what he does?

  929. He takes people to Jesus.

  930. That's who he is.

  931. He's like, I don't have all the answers,

  932. but I know who does.

  933. Come on.

  934. I'm going to take you.

  935. I'll show him.

  936. Church, do we do the same thing?

  937. We don't have all the answers.

  938. Do you find yourself

  939. taking people to Jesus?

  940. Do you find yourself

  941. that the problems

  942. and the lives of people

  943. that you come in contact with

  944. are spiritual?

  945. And if they're spiritual,

  946. there's one who has an answer

  947. for those spiritual things.

  948. His name is Jesus.

  949. And then,

  950. we love this third encounter,

  951. this encounter of Simon Peter,

  952. of Peter,

  953. we're going to call him Simon

  954. because when they say here

  955. in the text,

  956. Simon Peter,

  957. they're looking backwards

  958. as they're writing this thing.

  959. But you know who he was?

  960. He was Simon.

  961. His name was not Peter

  962. until after the encounter.

  963. Do you all know that?

  964. Listen to what it says.

  965. And by the way,

  966. you know what I was struck by

  967. when I was studying this?

  968. You know who Simon Peter is?

  969. As we read through the scriptures,

  970. read through the book of Acts,

  971. you know what it is?

  972. He's this loud,

  973. impetuous,

  974. he puts his foot in his mouth,

  975. he talks before he,

  976. I mean,

  977. he just,

  978. he says things

  979. that before he thinks about things.

  980. He's just this

  981. fire type of a guy,

  982. fiery type of a guy.

  983. And here's the encounter with Jesus.

  984. Jesus looked at him and said,

  985. you are Simon.

  986. You shall be Peter.

  987. Think about that.

  988. You are,

  989. but you shall be.

  990. You know,

  991. before we were in the kingdom,

  992. we were somebody,

  993. but since we've come into the kingdom,

  994. we're somebody else.

  995. Do you all realize that?

  996. Do you realize

  997. that a true encounter with Christ

  998. leads to being born again?

  999. It leads to salvation.

1000. It leads to a change.

1001. It leads to newness of life.

  1002. You know,

  1003. Romans 6 says that.

1004. We've been united with Christ,

1005. so now walk in newness of life.

  1006. You've been born again.

1007. You're no longer bound by sin,

  1008. but you're new creatures.

1009. I've put my desires in your heart.

1010. I've changed your heart of stone

1011. and made it a heart of flesh.

  1012. And Peter was dumbstruck,

  1013. I'm just guessing.

  1014. There's no words

1015. that seem to go from Peter.

  1016. He's like,

  1017. huh?

  1018. What do you mean

1019. I'm going to be another guy?

  1020. Radically different guy.

1021. Do you think that's true

1022. in the life of Peter?

1023. Do you see a different guy

  1024. after Pentecost?

  1025. You know,

  1026. Peter's the same one

  1027. that was scared

  1028. of the servant girl

  1029. at the gate

  1030. when he was going

  1031. to warm his hands

1032. after Jesus had been arrested.

  1033. And you know,

  1034. that same guy

1035. is the guy after Pentecost

  1036. that stood up

  1037. to the Pharisees

  1038. and said,

  1039. that's Jesus, man.

1040. You need to be saved.

  1041. I mean,

  1042. he's saying,

  1043. in his first sermon,

  1044. he talks about,

  1045. you think these guys

  1046. are drunk

  1047. because they've had this,

  1048. the Holy Spirit

  1049. come upon them

  1050. in this Pentecostal thing.

  1051. You think they're drunk.

  1052. They're not drunk.

1053. This is what was talked about

  1054. in the prophets.

1055. This is the movement of God

  1056. that Joel spoke about.

  1057. I mean,

  1058. he's bold as a lion.

1059. You go from this timid guy

  1060. that's scared

  1061. of getting hurt

  1062. to this bold guy

  1063. who's willing to die.

1064. Is that true for you?

1065. Do you find that now

  1066. that you're a Christian,

1067. do you find that there's

1068. a willingness in your life

  1069. and your heart

  1070. to be willing even

1071. to die for the kingdom?

  1072. Amen.

  1073. You know,

1074. that's the high call of God.

  1075. This soft,

  1076. mushy Christianity

  1077. that's being served up

  1078. on platters

1079. is not what the Scriptures

  1080. talk about.

1081. You know what the Scripture

  1082. talks about?

  1083. They talk about,

  1084. the Scripture talks about

  1085. a radical

  1086. giving my life away

  1087. to become a bondservant

  1088. of Christ

  1089. to set my eyes

1090. and fix them on Jesus

  1091. to seek first

  1092. the kingdom of God

  1093. and His righteousness.

  1094. That that's the way I live.

  1095. I don't live

  1096. for the world anymore.

  1097. I don't live

  1098. for temporal things.

1099. I live for Him now.

1100. And let me just say this,

  1101. for those of us

  1102. who genuinely desire

1103. to seek and live for Him,

  1104. you know what's going

1105. to happen in your heart.

  1106. Even though our personalities

1107. might not be like Peter's,

  1108. there's going to be

  1109. a boldness that comes

  1110. through the indwelling

  1111. Holy Spirit.

  1112. the fourth encounter.

  1113. The next day,

1114. Jesus decided to go to Galilee.

  1115. He found Philip

  1116. and said to him,

  1117. Philip, follow me.

  1118. And you know what

  1119. some would think,

  1120. wait a minute,

  1121. Jesus, I've got things

1122. at home I've got to do.

1123. I left the garden unattended.

1124. It's got some weeds in it.

  1125. I've got fishing plans

  1126. for my buddy.

  1127. I've got things

  1128. on the calendar, Jesus.

  1129. He says, follow me.

  1130. What did Philip say?

  1131. He said,

  1132. everything else

  1133. doesn't have any meaning

  1134. compared to the invitation.

  1135. Follow me.

1136. And what does he do?

  1137. Very similar.

  1138. He found Nathaniel

  1139. and he said,

  1140. he said something different.

1141. I want you to hear this.

1142. And we're going to end

  1143. with Nathaniel's encounter.

1144. But I want you to see

  1145. what Philip said

  1146. to Nathaniel.

  1147. Philip found Nathaniel.

1148. So there he is again.

  1149. What is the effect

  1150. of experiencing

  1151. the presence of Jesus?

  1152. What is the impact

  1153. of the encounter

  1154. with Jesus?

  1155. On Philip,

1156. you know what he did?

1157. He went and told people.

  1158. He found him.

  1159. And he said,

  1160. come and see.

  1161. Come on,

  1162. let's go see.

1163. I want you to see,

  1164. Jesus,

1165. I want you to see

1166. that he really is the Messiah.

  1167. And so he goes

  1168. and he says,

  1169. we found him.

  1170. Who?

  1171. The one that Moses

  1172. and the prophets

  1173. talk about.

1174. Why would he bring that up?

  1175. Let me just say

  1176. that it gives insight

  1177. in the scripture here

  1178. that these two men

  1179. were seekers

1180. of truth in the word.

  1181. They knew the law

1182. and they knew the prophets.

1183. They had been seeking hard.

  1184. They knew the prophecies

  1185. about the coming Messiah.

  1186. That's why it's interesting

  1187. to see the response

  1188. of Nathanael.

  1189. Listen.

  1190. We found him

  1191. of whom Moses

  1192. and the law

  1193. and also the prophets

  1194. wrote Jesus of Nazareth,

  1195. the son of Joseph.

  1196. Nathanael said,

  1197. can any good thing

  1198. come out of Nazareth?

1199. I want us to see

1200. why he makes that comment.

  1201. You know why?

  1202. Because he knew

  1203. the scriptures.

1204. And what do the scriptures

  1205. say about where

1206. the Messiah is coming from?

1207. They don't ever mention Nazareth.

  1208. Nazareth is in that

  1209. part of Israel

  1210. that's not even pure.

1211. You know when the temple

  1212. was built

  1213. and David was receiving

  1214. all the wood

  1215. and the cypress

  1216. and all the trees

  1217. from Hiram

  1218. and he was cutting

  1219. all this wood

  1220. and then afterwards

  1221. he gifted 20 cities

  1222. to Hiram

1223. and it was in the region

  1224. where Nazareth is.

  1225. This region that was

  1226. kind of black eye

  1227. because of this.

  1228. And that's where

  1229. Jesus came from

  1230. this place called Nazareth.

  1231. But he's saying

  1232. wait a minute

  1233. there's no way

  1234. Nazareth

  1235. nothing good ever

  1236. comes out of Nazareth.

  1237. It's not pure.

1238. And on top of that

  1239. the scriptures say

  1240. it's Bethlehem.

  1241. Why do you think

  1242. the Messiah is coming

  1243. from Nazareth?

1244. You've got to be wrong.

  1245. And he says

  1246. well come and see.

  1247. You come and experience

  1248. and see for yourself.

  1249. He said well

  1250. I trust you.

  1251. I believe you.

  1252. You're a deep friend of mine

1253. and I'm going to trust

1254. that you have the perspective.

  1255. I'll go.

  1256. And what happens

  1257. when he gets there?

  1258. It's the encounter

  1259. of Nathaniel

  1260. with Jesus.

1261. And listen to the encounter.

  1262. He says

1263. how do you know me?

  1264. Did somebody tell you

  1265. about me?

1266. I mean how do you know?

  1267. How do you know

  1268. that I'm not deceitful?

  1269. How do you know

  1270. I live like that?

  1271. Well you know

  1272. a caveat here

  1273. you know how

  1274. I know he knows?

  1275. He's omniscient.

  1276. Jesus knows our thoughts.

  1277. Jesus knows our desires.

1278. Jesus knows all about him.

  1279. That's why Jesus

  1280. could say to Peter

  1281. you're going to be

  1282. somebody totally different.

  1283. You're going to be

  1284. using the kingdom

1285. like you have no idea

1286. that I've got a plan for you.

  1287. And he says

  1288. Nathaniel

  1289. when you were under

  1290. the fig tree

  1291. I saw you.

  1292. Now understand

  1293. it's hard to understand

  1294. what's going on here

  1295. but here's what I believe.

  1296. I believe that

1297. Philip was in the habit

1298. of getting alone with God.

1299. And I hope all of us are.

1300. And he had this hiding place.

1301. Have you all ever seen a fig

  1302. when it's

1303. figs are heavy on the limbs?

1304. And when it hangs down?

1305. Some of these fig trees

  1306. get humongous.

  1307. They're big.

  1308. And you know

  1309. there's a whole canopy of limbs.

1310. You could go up under it

  1311. and it's like a whole

  1312. a nice little area

  1313. that the limbs

  1314. have sagged down

  1315. and they're kind of

  1316. protected this quiet place.

  1317. It's my belief

1318. that likely he had gone there

  1319. for his quiet place

1320. and nobody else knew about it.

1321. He had found this spot

1322. to get along with God

  1323. and even that morning

1324. he was talking to God

1325. and maybe even that morning

1326. God had pricked his heart

  1327. with something powerful.

  1328. And so he says

  1329. I saw you

  1330. when you were under

  1331. the fig tree

  1332. and immediately

  1333. Nathaniel's mind

  1334. was like

  1335. uh-uh

1336. nobody knows I was there.

1337. Not a soul in the world

  1338. knows that's the greatest

  1339. hiding place

  1340. you've ever seen.

  1341. How do you know

  1342. I was there?

  1343. And he goes

  1344. you are God.

  1345. There's nobody

  1346. that could possibly know

  1347. that.

  1348. There's nobody

  1349. that could possibly know

  1350. what God spoke

1351. to my heart this morning

  1352. but it's as if

  1353. Christ knew

  1354. every thought

  1355. that he had.

  1356. And he said

1357. you're the son of God

1358. you're the king of Israel.

  1359. Church

  1360. why do I spend

  1361. all this time

  1362. talking about

  1363. these encounters

  1364. with Jesus

  1365. is because

  1366. the message

1367. is for you and me.

  1368. How has it affected

  1369. your life?

  1370. I realize

  1371. there might be

  1372. some here

  1373. that would say

  1374. I'm not a Christian.

  1375. I'm still investigating.

  1376. I'm still listening.

  1377. I'm still trying

  1378. to understand

1379. what this is all about.

  1380. I'm drawn.

  1381. There's something

  1382. dragging me back

  1383. to church

  1384. dragging me back

  1385. to this whole idea

  1386. of Christ

1387. and what it's all about.

  1388. I don't know

  1389. what it is

  1390. but I sense

  1391. something going on.

  1392. Let me just say

  1393. to you

  1394. if you're

  1395. in that

  1396. place

  1397. come and see.

  1398. Christ would say

  1399. why are you

  1400. following me?

  1401. Come on.

  1402. Come and see.

  1403. I will show you

  1404. who I am.

  1405. I will show you

  1406. who you are.

  1407. I will show you

  1408. what you need.

  1409. And for us church

  1410. for those of y'all

  1411. who are born again

  1412. those of y'all

  1413. who are genuinely

  1414. believers

1415. you know what he says?

  1416. He says follow me.

  1417. And let me just

  1418. encourage all of us

  1419. when he says

  1420. follow me

  1421. he doesn't mean

  1422. just come to church

  1423. on Sunday.

1424. You know what he means?

1425. It's to give your life

  1426. away in service

  1427. to the king

  1428. that you would be

  1429. willing to be

  1430. the lowest servant

  1431. in the house

  1432. of your God.

  1433. Let's pray.

  1434. Father

1435. I pray that your word

  1436. would move us

  1437. this morning

  1438. to turn

  1439. and follow you

  1440. all the days

  1441. of our life

  1442. to never veer

  1443. to the left

  1444. or to the right

  1445. but by your strength

  1446. and your power

  1447. and your supernatural

  1448. ability to move us

  1449. in our heart

  1450. Father

  1451. give us a courage

  1452. give us a desire

  1453. to want you

  1454. more than anything else.

  1455. And Father

  1456. I pray that you

  1457. sustain us

1458. and you would lead us

  1459. and you would

  1460. draw us into

  1461. an intimate relationship

  1462. with you

  1463. in this I pray

  1464. in your name.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. Amen.
