  1. Please open your Bibles up this morning to the Gospel according to John.

  2. The Gospel according to John. We have made our way to chapter 2 this morning.

  3. Several weeks in already in the Gospel of John, but that first chapter is so dense and so rich and so full, we took our time.

  4. And I will say, if you're joining us for the first time this morning, you've come at a good time.

  5. We're only one chapter in. I hope you got one of those scripture journals on your way in.

  6. We encourage everybody to take notes as we listen to the sermons. It's a good way for you to follow along.

  7. And Lord willing, by the end of this, we'll have a good understanding, a good grasp of the Gospel of John

  8. and what it has to say about our Savior, Jesus Christ.

  9. So if you would, John chapter 2, and we'll read from verses 1 through 11 this morning.

    John 2 chapter mention

  10. If you are using the Pew Bibles there in front of you, you can find this on page 834.

  11. If you didn't bring your own Bible, 834.

  12. Follow along with me as I read.

  13. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

  14. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  15. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him,

  16. They have no wine.

  17. And Jesus said to her,

  18. Woman, what does this have to do with me?

  19. My hour has not yet come.

  20. His mother said to the servants,

  21. Do whatever he tells you.

  22. Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification,

  23. each holding 20 or 30 gallons.

  24. Jesus said to the servants,

  25. Fill the jars with water.

  26. And they filled them up to the brim.

  27. And he said to them,

  28. Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.

  29. So they took it.

  30. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine,

  31. and did not know where it came from,

  32. though the servants who had drawn the water knew,

  33. the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him,

  34. Everyone serves the good wine first,

  35. and when the people have drunk freely,

  36. then the poor wine,

  37. but you have kept the good wine until now.

  38. This, the first of his signs,

  39. Jesus did at Cana in Galilee,

  40. and manifested his glory,

  41. and his disciples believed in him.

  42. This is God's holy, perfect word.

  43. Would you bow and pray with me once more?

  44. Lord, we thank you.

  45. We thank you for the beauty and the power of your word,

  46. and we pray now that as it goes forth,

  47. that it would go forth with your spirit.

  48. Lord, that you would accomplish the purposes for which you sinned.

  49. We pray in Christ's name.

  50. Amen.

  51. I think every married couple has a story or two to share from their own wedding day.

  52. You finally come to this moment after months and months,

  53. sometimes even years of planning and preparing,

  54. and you want everything to just go exactly just right,

  55. but sometimes, no matter how much you prepare and how much you plan,

  56. something inevitably goes wrong.

  57. Amanda and I, we made most of the arrangements for our wedding ourselves.

  58. It was very, very homemade, and so we went,

  59. we found a dance floor through a friend of a friend.

  60. We went and we picked it up in a borrowed truck.

  61. We brought it back to the venue that we had selected.

  62. We laid it out ourselves.

  63. I got up.

  64. I climbed up in the trees.

  65. I hung up the lights around the dance floor.

  66. We borrowed chairs from our church.

  67. We set them all out.

  68. We met with the food vendors and the restaurants to determine what the menu would be.

  69. We had a friend serve as the DJ with a borrowed iPod and a playlist that we had put together.

  70. We transformed a gazebo there on site into a photo booth.

  71. We did that ourselves.

  72. We had family bake pies instead of hiring a caterer to do a cake.

  73. And we even had our friends vote on where we should take our honeymoon, which we planned ourselves.

  74. It was all very homemade, and it was an adventure, and we loved it.

  75. But it was not without its flaws.

  76. The night was so busy that neither of us really got to enjoy the food that we had planned out and picked out, selected.

  77. The gazebo had hundreds, if not thousands, of staples stuck in the wood that we later had to go and remove ourselves.

  78. Our friends to this day still give us grief over the fact that we left after the ceremony,

  79. and they remained to clean up and pick up the chairs and tables that we had borrowed.

  80. And to top it all off, the tree that I climbed into to hang the lights, little did I know, was covered in poison oak.

  81. I don't know if it is just the pressure of the moment.

  82. Maybe it's a result of poor preparation, poor planning.

  83. Whatever it is, it seems like weddings are just primed for a little bit of drama.

  84. Our story here in John chapter 2, as you know, is no exception.

    John 2 chapter mention

  85. In our passage here this morning, we see that Jesus has been invited to a wedding.

  86. He's there with his family and his disciples.

  87. No doubt, much planning and much preparation has gone into this event, this celebration.

  88. But as we see, it is not without some drama.

  89. The wine was gone.

  90. This wedding had unintentionally become a dry wedding.

  91. But thankfully, someone was smart enough to include Jesus on the guest list.

  92. What I want us to see this morning is that this wedding drama, this story,

  93. is more than just a story of water turning into wine.

  94. This drama, John tells us, is a sign.

  95. It's the first of the signs that Jesus has done in Cana.

  96. It's a sign of who Jesus is and what Jesus brings.

  97. It shows us that Jesus has the power to transform.

  98. Not just water into wine, yes, that's part of it, but sorrow into joy.

  99. And the question for us as we dig into this account, as we see this story is,

  100. has Jesus worked this miracle in our hearts?

  101. Do we have the joy of knowing Jesus, the giver of true and lasting joy?

  102. Are our lives marked by the joy of knowing Jesus Christ?

  103. We're going to see this unfold in two parts this morning.

  104. This is going to be our outline.

  105. If you're following along and taking notes, two parts here.

  106. We'll see how Jesus transforms from drought to delight.

  107. From drought to delight.

  108. First, John presents us with a problem here.

  109. In verses 1 through 5, there was a drought.

  110. Look there with me.

  111. In verse 1, John lays out the scene for us.

  112. He says,

  113. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee,

  114. and the mother of Jesus was there.

  115. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  116. Now, a wedding in Jewish culture was one of, if not the most significant events in someone's life.

  117. This was a major affair, a major celebration.

  118. The bride and the groom were treated like royalty.

  119. Often, they were even, they had crowns put on their heads.

  120. And for that duration of the celebration, whatever they said went.

  121. They were in charge.

  122. The wedding feast in this culture, it was not a one or two or three hour event like it often is in hours.

  123. It lasted for seven days.

  124. And it was the responsibility of the host, the bridegroom,

  125. to make sure that all of the guests were properly wined and dined for the duration of the feast.

  126. Well, I'm not sure if they planned poorly.

  127. Perhaps they were not wealthy enough to provide exactly as much as they needed to.

  128. Maybe more guests showed up than anticipated.

  129. We don't know exactly why this problem happened.

  130. But verse 3 tells us the issue.

  131. The wine has run out.

  132. Now, to understand what John is telling us about this passage,

  133. we have to understand how the Bible talks about wine.

  134. This is the issue here in this passage.

  135. We just kind of have to work through this whole alcohol thing for a minute

  136. before we can begin to understand what John is telling us in this passage.

  137. Some of us, I know, may have a personal conviction

  138. that any alcohol consumption of any kind at all times is always sinful.

  139. And so maybe you've never had an alcoholic beverage.

  140. Maybe you never plan to have an alcoholic beverage.

  141. Maybe you have a family history of abuse of alcohol,

  142. personal history of abuse with alcohol.

  143. And so you have chosen to stay away from it.

  144. And if that's you, I want you to hear me very clearly

  145. that if that is your personal conviction,

  146. then you are 100% right to stay away.

  147. You are 100% right.

  148. Because your conscience is bound,

  149. then it would be sinful for you to drink it.

  150. But we need to acknowledge that this is a personal conviction

  151. and not a universal rule.

  152. A personal conviction and not a biblical mandate

  153. for all people everywhere at all times.

  154. The Old Testament, the Bible,

  155. especially in the Old Testament,

  156. it actually speaks very positively about wine.

  157. In the Old Testament,

  158. wine is presented as a good gift from God.

  159. Now, of course, as with any good gift,

  160. it can be abused.

  161. And the Bible is explicitly clear

  162. that drunkenness is always sinful.

  163. I'll say that again.

  164. The Bible is explicitly clear

  165. that drunkenness is always sinful.

  166. But it tells us that wine is a good gift

  167. that gladdens the heart of man,

  168. as we're told in Psalm 104, verse 15.

    Psalms 104:15

  169. It's a good gift where an abundance of wine

  170. symbolizes God's blessing,

  171. as we're told in Proverbs 3, Genesis 27.

  172. And a lack of wine often is a sign of God's judgment,

  173. as we see in Isaiah 24, for example.

  174. Now, this is significant for us

  175. as we seek to understand this text,

  176. this passage,

  177. because again,

  178. the central problem here at this wedding

  179. is that the wine is gone.

  180. The wine has run out.

  181. So what does this mean?

  182. Well, the wine is gone.

  183. That means the joy is gone.

  184. The wine is gone.

  185. The celebration is over.

  186. The wine is gone.

  187. The blessing is gone.

  188. This was a major issue to be dealt with.

  189. In fact, in this culture,

  190. they took this so seriously

  191. that if the host did not provide adequate wine

  192. for the guest,

  193. he could be liable for a lawsuit.

  194. No joke.

  195. So Mary, the mother of Jesus,

  196. realizes the issue,

  197. comes to Jesus,

  198. says to him,

  199. they have no wine.

  200. It's difficult,

  201. as you know,

  202. to interpret tone

  203. from written text.

  204. That's often why we misunderstand

  205. text messages and emails.

  206. We have a hard time interpreting tone,

  207. but I'm almost certain

  208. that the tone here

  209. was one of urgent panic

  210. from Mary.

  211. They have no wine.

  212. And as all eyes were beginning

  213. to turn to the bridegroom

  214. to fix the problem,

  215. to the bridegroom

  216. to restore the joy

  217. to the celebration,

  218. Mary,

  219. the mother of the Messiah,

  220. turned her eyes

  221. to Jesus.

  222. Jesus.

  223. They have no wine.

  224. And again,

  225. we can't really read tone

  226. into the text,

  227. but I believe he responds

  228. with a term of endearment,

  229. not disrespect.

  230. Endearment.

  231. As we see in verse 4,

  232. he says,

  233. Woman,

  234. what does this have to do

  235. with me?

  236. My hour

  237. has not

  238. yet

  239. come.

  240. Can you sense the irony

  241. here?

  242. I wonder if you can see

  243. the bigger picture

  244. that Jesus sees

  245. in this story.

  246. See,

  247. to Mary,

  248. she's looking at

  249. the immediate issue.

  250. This is just wine

  251. at a wedding.

  252. She had raised Jesus.

  253. She knew of his innocence,

  254. knew of his power.

  255. She knew how unique

  256. he was

  257. as a son of God.

  258. She knew the tension

  259. of that moment.

  260. And she knew

  261. that surely

  262. if anyone could fix this,

  263. Jesus could.

  264. But to Jesus,

  265. he had something

  266. much,

  267. much bigger

  268. on his mind.

  269. As he looked on

  270. at this dilemma

  271. at the wedding,

  272. he saw the issue

  273. at hand,

  274. but in his mind

  275. he was looking ahead

  276. to a much bigger

  277. dilemma.

  278. Do you see it?

  279. See,

  280. Jesus,

  281. Jesus knew

  282. better than anyone

  283. what this wedding

  284. represents.

  285. is a picture

  286. of Christ

  287. in the church.

  288. He knows

  289. better than anyone

  290. that one day

  291. the bride of Christ,

  292. all of the redeemed,

  293. will gather

  294. to celebrate

  295. the true wedding

  296. of the Lamb

  297. in glory,

  298. and he knows

  299. exactly

  300. what that meal

  301. will cost.

  302. Jesus knows

  303. that the hour

  304. is coming

  305. soon

  306. when he will

  307. take a jar

  308. of wine

  309. and pour it

  310. into glass

  311. and spread it

  312. and share it

  313. with all of his

  314. disciples

  315. and tell them

  316. this cup

  317. is the new covenant

  318. in my blood.

  319. And then the hour

  320. will come

  321. when Christ,

  322. the true bridegroom,

  323. will manifest

  324. his glory

  325. in full

  326. and pour out

  327. blood

  328. from the vessel

  329. of his own body

  330. to purchase

  331. and cleanse

  332. and purify

  333. his bride.

  334. That time

  335. is coming.

  336. That hour

  337. is approaching

  338. for Jesus.

  339. It is ever present,

  340. ever weighing

  341. on his mind,

  342. even right here

  343. at the very beginning

  344. of his ministry,

  345. but it's not

  346. yet here.

  347. He tells Mary,

  348. I can't rush

  349. that moment.

  350. The time,

  351. the hour

  352. has not yet

  353. come.

  354. But we see

  355. he does manifest

  356. his glory

  357. in part.

  358. He does this miracle

  359. as a sign,

  360. we're told,

  361. as a pointer,

  362. again,

  363. of who he is

  364. and what he has

  365. come to do.

  366. You see,

  367. Jesus knows

  368. the state

  369. of our soul.

  370. Jesus knows

  371. the state

  372. of our needy,

  373. dry,

  374. desperate soul

  375. apart from him.

  376. That apart from him

  377. we are spiritually

  378. parched.

  379. We are without joy.

  380. We are without

  381. God's blessing.

  382. We are without

  383. hope.

  384. But that is

  385. exactly

  386. why

  387. he

  388. came.

  389. See,

  390. in one sense,

  391. this story

  392. of water

  393. transforming into wine

  394. is a picture

  395. of our condition,

  396. of our life

  397. apart from Christ.

  398. You may be here

  399. and you think

  400. that you're fine

  401. apart from Christ.

  402. You got everything

  403. you need,

  404. you're fine,

  405. you're fine just

  406. as you are.

  407. You may think

  408. this life is good,

  409. you don't need Christ

  410. at all,

  411. but hear me,

  412. this story

  413. tells us

  414. there is an end

  415. to every worldly

  416. joy,

  417. every worldly

  418. pleasure

  419. apart from

  420. Christ.

  421. Christ.

  422. There will come

  423. a time,

  424. it may be today,

  425. it may be tomorrow,

  426. we don't know when,

  427. there will come a time

  428. when the wine

  429. will run

  430. out.

  431. Then where

  432. will we turn?

  433. Where do we turn

  434. when we're spiritually

  435. dry?

  436. Well,

  437. this story tells us

  438. we turn to the only

  439. one who can bring us

  440. from drought

  441. to delight.

  442. delight.

  443. This is what we see

  444. in our second point

  445. this morning.

  446. We see the transformation

  447. here from drought

  448. to delight.

  449. Look there to verse 6

  450. with me.

  451. Verse 6

  452. shows us

  453. this miracle.

  454. He says,

  455. Now there were

  456. six stone water

  457. jars there

  458. for the Jewish

  459. rites of purification,

  460. each holding

  461. twenty or thirty

  462. gallons.

  463. Jesus said to the

  464. servants,

  465. fill the jars

  466. with water,

  467. and they filled

  468. them up to the

  469. brim and he said

  470. to them,

  471. Now draw some out,

  472. take it to the

  473. master of the feast

  474. and they took it.

  475. When the master

  476. of the feast

  477. tasted the water

  478. now become wine

  479. and did not know

  480. where it came from,

  481. though the servants

  482. who had drawn

  483. the water knew,

  484. the master of the

  485. feast called

  486. the bridegroom

  487. and said to him,

  488. Everyone serves

  489. the good wine

  490. first and when

  491. people have drunk

  492. freely then the

  493. poor wine,

  494. but you have

  495. kept the good

  496. wine

  497. until now.

  498. This is a miracle.

  499. It's the first

  500. recorded miracle

  501. in the Gospel

  502. of John.

  503. It's the beginning

  504. here, the onset

  505. of Jesus'

  506. ministry,

  507. and of course

  508. as with any

  509. miracle in the

  510. Bible, skeptics

  511. and theologically

  512. liberal scholars,

  513. they twist and

  514. they turn and

  515. they work hard

  516. to find ways

  517. to explain this

  518. away.

  519. And they say

  520. that while this

  521. is not scientifically

  522. possible,

  523. it doesn't

  524. happen.

  525. Water does not

  526. become wine

  527. and so therefore

  528. this must not

  529. be a legitimate

  530. story.

  531. And so one way

  532. that they explain

  533. this occurrence

  534. away is that

  535. they say,

  536. well, there must

  537. have been just

  538. a little bit

  539. of wine there

  540. at the bottom

  541. of the jars

  542. and when they

  543. filled the jars

  544. with water,

  545. now it had

  546. mixed together

  547. and it had

  548. some of the

  549. wine taste in

  550. there.

  551. Now we have

  552. the six jars

  553. of really

  554. watered down

  555. wine, but

  556. they were so

  557. drunk from

  558. the rest of

  559. the wine that

  560. everyone thought

  561. Jesus had

  562. performed a

  563. miracle.

  564. But that's

  565. not what John

  566. says, is it?

  567. What does he

  568. say?

  569. He says that

  570. the master of

  571. the feast

  572. tasted the

  573. water, now

  574. become wine,

  575. and praised

  576. the bridegroom for

  577. saving the best

  578. wine for last.

  579. See, believe it

  580. or disbelieve it,

  581. that's your

  582. choice to make,

  583. but we have

  584. to deal with

  585. what John

  586. actually says

  587. here.

  588. We can't just

  589. change it into

  590. what we want

  591. it to say.

  592. But see, skeptics

  593. have a hard time

  594. with miracles like

  595. this because they

  596. don't fit into

  597. their understanding

  598. of the world

  599. and how it

  600. works.

  601. It doesn't fit

  602. into their

  603. framework of how

  604. ordinary life

  605. is.

  606. But I want

  607. you to see

  608. that is exactly

  609. John's point.

  610. You see that?

  611. John is making

  612. a point.

  613. He's showing us

  614. the identity

  615. of Jesus.

  616. He's telling us

  617. that Jesus

  618. is not ordinary.

  619. See, John's not

  620. going out of his

  621. way to tell us

  622. a story of a man

  623. who turned water

  624. into water.

  625. That's not what

  626. he's doing.

  627. He's making a

  628. point that this

  629. man, Jesus,

  630. he is doing

  631. things that don't

  632. ordinarily happen.

  633. This man, Jesus,

  634. is doing things

  635. that cannot be

  636. done.

  637. I've never seen

  638. water turn into

  639. wine before,

  640. but this man,

  641. Jesus, has done

  642. it and it's a

  643. sign, therefore,

  644. of who he is.

  645. He's demonstrating

  646. a power and

  647. ability that's

  648. outside of our

  649. ordinary experience

  650. of normal life.

  651. Science attempts

  652. to explain and

  653. describe what we

  654. see, what we

  655. observe.

  656. John says, I

  657. have seen and

  658. observed some

  659. special things.

  660. The only way I

  661. can describe this

  662. is that this is

  663. the Messiah.

  664. This is the

  665. Son of God.

  666. So you may

  667. leave here and

  668. not believe what

  669. John is saying.

  670. Again, that's your

  671. choice to make,

  672. but we can't

  673. ignore the

  674. claim that he

  675. is making.

  676. We have to do

  677. something here

  678. with it.

  679. John says in

  680. verse 11 that

  681. this was the

  682. first of his

  683. signs.

  684. that Jesus

  685. did in Cana

  686. at Galilee.

  687. He manifested

  688. his glory and

  689. his disciples,

  690. they believed

  691. in him.

  692. The disciples

  693. saw what Jesus

  694. had done.

  695. They believed

  696. that Jesus

  697. was the

  698. Messiah.

  699. This act,

  700. this miracle

  701. was a sign.

  702. It's a sign

  703. that this was

  704. no ordinary

  705. man.

  706. We're going to

  707. see more of

  708. these signs

  709. throughout the

  710. Gospel of John.

  711. This is the

  712. first of these

  713. signs.

  714. In fact,

  715. John has

  716. seven signs

  717. throughout the

  718. Gospel of John.

  719. Some have

  720. called the

  721. Gospel of John

  722. the Book of

  723. Signs.

  724. He's presenting

  725. to us this

  726. claim, this

  727. case.

  728. He's showing

  729. us that Jesus

  730. is not

  731. ordinary.

  732. He is the

  733. Son of

  734. God.

  735. You may not

  736. accept what

  737. John is saying

  738. here, but

  739. let's consider

  740. for a minute

  741. what this

  742. means if

  743. this story

  744. is true.

  745. this means

  746. that Jesus

  747. Christ has

  748. the unique

  749. power to

  750. transform.

  751. Jesus Christ

  752. has the

  753. unique power

  754. to transform.

  755. I want us to

  756. see this in

  757. five ways

  758. here.

  759. First,

  760. Jesus has

  761. the unique

  762. power to

  763. transform

  764. material

  765. objects.

  766. water to

  767. water to

  768. water to

  769. water to

  770. water to

  771. water to

  772. water to

  773. water to

  774. water to

  775. water to

  776. water to

  777. water to

  778. water to

  779. wine.

  780. Water to

  781. wine.

  782. Jesus has

  783. the unique

  784. ability,

  785. unique control

  786. over substances

  787. and materials

  788. in creation,

  789. which gives

  790. us a clue

  791. that he

  792. is distinct

  793. from creation.

  794. He is

  795. the creator.

  796. And John's

  797. already shown

  798. us this,

  799. hasn't he?

  800. Chapter 1,

  801. verse 3,

  802. he says,

  803. all things

  804. were made

  805. through him

  806. and without

  807. him was not

  808. anything made

  809. that was

  810. made.

  811. The water

  812. was made

  813. through him,

  814. the grapes

  815. were made

  816. through him,

  817. the wine

  818. was made

  819. through him,

  820. and as

  821. the sovereign

  822. creator of

  823. everything,

  824. everywhere,

  825. he guides

  826. and controls

  827. all things

  828. even down

  829. to the

  830. smallest

  831. molecules

  832. in existence.

  833. As Colossians

  834. tells us,

  835. he is before

  836. all things

  837. and in him

  838. all things

  839. hold together.

  840. All of it

  841. is from him,

  842. all of it

  843. is through him,

  844. all of it

  845. is for him.

  846. But the

  847. bigger picture,

  848. understanding

  849. of what's

  850. happening here,

  851. at a bigger

  852. level,

  853. we see,

  854. number two,

  855. Jesus has

  856. the unique

  857. power to

  858. transform

  859. the ages.

  860. Jesus has

  861. the unique

  862. power to

  863. transform

  864. the ages.

  865. Where do I

  866. see that?

  867. Well,

  868. you have to

  869. probe a little

  870. bit here,

  871. you have to

  872. kind of

  873. understand the

  874. bigger picture

  875. here.

  876. Look there

  877. with me again

  878. to verse 6.

  879. What was

  880. used for

  881. this

  882. transformation?

  883. Six

  884. stone

  885. water

  886. jars

  887. for the

  888. Jewish

  889. rites

  890. of

  891. purification.

  892. I think

  893. what John

  894. is showing

  895. us here

  896. is that

  897. Jesus takes

  898. this Old

  899. Testament

  900. purifying

  901. practice,

  902. this water

  903. of cleansing

  904. and he

  905. transforms

  906. it into

  907. something

  908. new,

  909. into wine

  910. for celebrating

  911. and for

  912. rejoicing.

  913. What's being

  914. said here?

  915. Well,

  916. I believe

  917. he's showing

  918. us that

  919. Jesus is

  920. doing away

  921. with the

  922. Old Testament,

  923. Old Covenant

  924. matter and

  925. means of

  926. relating to

  927. God and

  928. he is

  929. ushering

  930. forth,

  931. ushering

  932. in something

  933. entirely

  934. new.

  935. It's a

  936. transformation

  937. of the

  938. ages,

  939. a transformation

  940. from the

  941. Old Testament

  942. ways that

  943. people interacted

  944. with God

  945. through external

  946. washing,

  947. external cleansing,

  948. through the

  949. blood of

  950. bulls and

  951. goats that

  952. were temporary

  953. and external

  954. and he's

  955. ushering in

  956. the new

  957. covenant

  958. in his

  959. blood,

  960. spilled

  961. out from

  962. the purest,

  963. cleanest

  964. vessel,

  965. the vessel

  966. of his

  967. own body

  968. for the

  969. forgiveness

  970. of the

  971. sins of

  972. his own

  973. bride so

  974. that we're

  975. no longer

  976. purified and

  977. cleansed from

  978. the outside

  979. but his

  980. blood

  981. cleanses

  982. us from

  983. every sin.

  984. His blood

  985. purifies us

  986. from all

  987. guilt.

  988. The better

  989. true wine

  990. has been

  991. saved for

  992. last.

  993. See,

  994. this is not

  995. just a

  996. transformation

  997. from water

  998. to wine.

  999. This is a

  1000. transformation

  1001. from age

  1002. to age.

  1003. It's a

  1004. transformation

  1005. in how we

  1006. relate to

  1007. God,

  1008. no longer

  1009. through external

  1010. cleansing,

  1011. but through

  1012. the very

  1013. blood of

  1014. Christ

  1015. shed for

  1016. us

  1017. for the

  1018. forgiveness

  1019. of our

  1020. sins,

  1021. for our

  1022. cleansing

  1023. and for

  1024. our

  1025. joy,

  1026. which is

  1027. what we

  1028. see in

  1029. our third

  1030. transformation.

  1031. We see

  1032. number three,

  1033. Jesus Christ

  1034. has a

  1035. unique power

  1036. to transform

  1037. sorrow

  1038. into joy.

  1039. joy.

  1040. Jesus Christ

  1041. has a

  1042. unique power

  1043. to transform

  1044. sorrow

  1045. into joy.

  1046. Could you

  1047. imagine

  1048. what the

  1049. bridegroom was

  1050. feeling here?

  1051. Let's put

  1052. yourself in

  1053. his shoes

  1054. for a minute.

  1055. Imagine if you

  1056. were the

  1057. bridegroom here

  1058. at this

  1059. wedding.

  1060. Perhaps he

  1061. knows that

  1062. he's run

  1063. out of

  1064. wine.

  1065. Surely he

  1066. does.

  1067. Mary knows.

  1068. the servant

  1069. knows.

  1070. Surely he

  1071. feels the

  1072. weight of

  1073. embarrassment,

  1074. of shame,

  1075. of guilt,

  1076. possibly,

  1077. probably anxiety,

  1078. worry,

  1079. fear of

  1080. what might

  1081. happen,

  1082. worry over

  1083. what to do,

  1084. and then all

  1085. of a sudden

  1086. you hear the

  1087. master of the

  1088. feast call

  1089. out your

  1090. name in

  1091. front of

  1092. everyone.

  1093. You know

  1094. that you're

  1095. just about

  1096. to be

  1097. publicly

  1098. humiliated,

  1099. but instead

  1100. he praises

  1101. you.

  1102. Everyone

  1103. else saves

  1104. the best

  1105. wine,

  1106. serves the

  1107. best wine

  1108. first,

  1109. and then the

  1110. poor wine

  1111. when the

  1112. people have

  1113. drunk freely,

  1114. but you,

  1115. you have

  1116. kept the

  1117. good wine

  1118. until now.

  1119. Could you

  1120. imagine the

  1121. relief that

  1122. that man

  1123. felt?

  1124. His sorrow

  1125. in that

  1126. moment was

  1127. transformed into

  1128. joy,

  1129. celebration,

  1130. all of his

  1131. worry,

  1132. all of the

  1133. weight of

  1134. guilt,

  1135. all of the

  1136. shame is

  1137. gone,

  1138. and in

  1139. its place

  1140. is joy.

  1141. This is what

  1142. Jesus has

  1143. come to

  1144. do.

  1145. I shared

  1146. with some

  1147. of you,

  1148. I shared

  1149. with our

  1150. men's group

  1151. this week

  1152. that I had

  1153. the privilege

  1154. to disciple

  1155. some men

  1156. in North

  1157. Myrtle Beach

  1158. when we were

  1159. living there,

  1160. a couple of

  1161. them in the

  1162. group,

  1163. they were

  1164. old enough

  1165. to be my

  1166. grandfather,

  1167. but they

  1168. were my

  1169. brothers and

  1170. my friends.

  1171. I loved

  1172. them.

  1173. over the

  1174. past week,

  1175. they were

  1176. steadily growing

  1177. weaker,

  1178. growing older,

  1179. growing sicker,

  1180. and over the

  1181. past week,

  1182. we got news

  1183. that they

  1184. were not

  1185. in good

  1186. health,

  1187. and last

  1188. Tuesday,

  1189. both of

  1190. them,

  1191. Tuesday

  1192. evening,

  1193. same night,

  1194. both of

  1195. them passed

  1196. away.

  1197. I couldn't

  1198. believe it.

  1199. But I had

  1200. the chance

  1201. to call and

  1202. to speak

  1203. with one

  1204. of them

  1205. a few

  1206. days before

  1207. he passed,

  1208. knowing that

  1209. he was

  1210. hours,

  1211. days away

  1212. from death.

  1213. He laughed.

  1214. He could

  1215. hear the

  1216. smile over

  1217. the phone.

  1218. He sounded

  1219. good.

  1220. He knew he

  1221. was approaching

  1222. death's door,

  1223. but that man

  1224. was full

  1225. of joy

  1226. in the

  1227. Lord.

  1228. Let me

  1229. tell you

  1230. something.

  1231. That is not

  1232. something that

  1233. is possible

  1234. to be understood

  1235. by the world

  1236. around us

  1237. apart from

  1238. knowing

  1239. Christ.

  1240. Even the

  1241. sorrow that

  1242. we feel

  1243. in saying

  1244. goodbye

  1245. to these

  1246. men,

  1247. we do it

  1248. with joy,

  1249. knowing that

  1250. their suffering

  1251. is done.

  1252. Their sorrow

  1253. is done.

  1254. They have

  1255. nothing to

  1256. look forward

  1257. to but

  1258. eternal joy

  1259. in the

  1260. presence of

  1261. the Lord

  1262. forever.

  1263. I don't

  1264. want to

  1265. make light

  1266. of suffering.

  1267. It's very

  1268. real.

  1269. Sorrow

  1270. in this

  1271. age,

  1272. hardship,

  1273. pain,

  1274. evil,

  1275. death,

  1276. very,

  1277. very real.

  1278. But church,

  1279. we suffer

  1280. as Christians

  1281. who have

  1282. the joy

  1283. of the

  1284. Lord.

  1285. And knowing

  1286. Him

  1287. transforms

  1288. every ounce

  1289. of temporary

  1290. sorrow you

  1291. will feel

  1292. in this

  1293. fading age.

  1294. Jesus

  1295. came

  1296. to transform

  1297. all sorrow

  1298. into joy

  1299. for all

  1300. who know

  1301. the Lord.

  1302. And not

  1303. just a little

  1304. bit of joy.

  1305. Number four,

  1306. we see that

  1307. Jesus has

  1308. a unique

  1309. power to

  1310. transform

  1311. absence of

  1312. joy to

  1313. abundance

  1314. of joy.

  1315. I'm not a

  1316. math person

  1317. at all.

  1318. So check

  1319. my work.

  1320. Let's do

  1321. the math

  1322. here.

  1323. There's

  1324. six

  1325. stone

  1326. jars,

  1327. each of

  1328. them

  1329. holding

  1330. 20 to

  1331. 30

  1332. gallons.

  1333. They're

  1334. all filled

  1335. up to

  1336. the brim,

  1337. by the

  1338. way.

  1339. And that

  1340. means that

  1341. Jesus has

  1342. just created

  1343. somewhere

  1344. between

  1345. 120 to

  1346. 180

  1347. gallons

  1348. of wine.

  1349. the best

  1350. wine

  1351. imaginable.

  1352. This is

  1353. an abundance

  1354. of wine.

  1355. And then

  1356. go a little

  1357. bit further.

  1358. A typical

  1359. serving of

  1360. wine is

  1361. about six

  1362. ounces.

  1363. There are

  1364. 128 ounces

  1365. in a gallon,

  1366. which means

  1367. you get

  1368. about 21

  1369. or 22

  1370. glasses

  1371. per gallon.

  1372. Again,

  1373. y'all check

  1374. my math,

  1375. but I think

  1376. Jesus just

  1377. whipped up

  1378. about

  1379. 3,960

  1380. glasses

  1381. of wine.

  1382. And now

  1383. for one

  1384. thing,

  1385. he just

  1386. showed up

  1387. every other

  1388. person who

  1389. brought a

  1390. gift to

  1391. this wedding.

  1392. I don't

  1393. know what

  1394. the gifts

  1395. were normally

  1396. like in

  1397. this culture,

  1398. but I'm

  1399. pretty certain

  1400. that none

  1401. of them

  1402. outdid

  1403. Jesus on

  1404. that day.

  1405. This was a

  1406. rich gift

  1407. from Christ,

  1408. but this

  1409. is just

  1410. how it

  1411. is with

  1412. Jesus.

  1413. This is

  1414. how Jesus

  1415. gives.

  1416. We should

  1417. realize that

  1418. he is

  1419. full of

  1420. grace,

  1421. full of

  1422. truth,

  1423. and there

  1424. is no

  1425. limit on

  1426. the blessing

  1427. that Jesus

  1428. can and

  1429. will give

  1430. to all

  1431. of his

  1432. people.

  1433. Jesus

  1434. Christ does

  1435. not give

  1436. begrudgingly

  1437. or half-heartedly

  1438. or reluctantly.

  1439. He doesn't

  1440. extend grace

  1441. and joy

  1442. with his

  1443. hands gripped

  1444. tight around

  1445. it,

  1446. just wishing

  1447. he couldn't

  1448. give it

  1449. to you.

  1450. Jesus

  1451. gives

  1452. in

  1453. abundance

  1454. grace,

  1455. joy,

  1456. happiness,

  1457. satisfaction,

  1458. forgiveness,

  1459. the riches

  1460. of the love

  1461. of God

  1462. poured out

  1463. freely

  1464. for the

  1465. enjoyment

  1466. of his

  1467. people.

  1468. From his

  1469. fullness we

  1470. have all

  1471. received grace.

  1472. What?

  1473. Grace upon

  1474. grace,

  1475. which tells

  1476. me,

  1477. number five,

  1478. and here's

  1479. where we

  1480. close.

  1481. Jesus

  1482. Christ

  1483. has the

  1484. power to

  1485. transform

  1486. you

  1487. and me.

  1488. Jesus

  1489. Christ

  1490. alone

  1491. has the

  1492. unique

  1493. power

  1494. to

  1495. transform

  1496. our

  1497. dryness

  1498. to

  1499. delight.

  1500. Would

  1501. others

  1502. describe you

  1503. as full

  1504. of joy?

  1505. joy?

  1506. Are you

  1507. growing

  1508. deeper,

  1509. deeper,

  1510. deeper

  1511. in your

  1512. delight

  1513. in the

  1514. Lord?

  1515. Jesus

  1516. Christ,

  1517. this man

  1518. that we're

  1519. talking about

  1520. this morning

  1521. is a

  1522. never-ending

  1523. source,

  1524. an inexhaustible

  1525. fountain of

  1526. true and

  1527. lasting joy,

  1528. which means

  1529. Christians out

  1530. of all people

  1531. of the world

  1532. ought to be

  1533. marked by

  1534. joy.

  1535. Some of

  1536. you here

  1537. may be

  1538. spiritually

  1539. dry because

  1540. you don't

  1541. know the

  1542. Lord.

  1543. And if

  1544. that's you,

  1545. the call

  1546. of God

  1547. from this

  1548. text to

  1549. you this

  1550. morning

  1551. is to

  1552. stop

  1553. turning,

  1554. stop

  1555. relying,

  1556. stop

  1557. drinking

  1558. from

  1559. temporary

  1560. pleasures

  1561. that are

  1562. here today

  1563. and gone

  1564. tomorrow.

  1565. Stop

  1566. living

  1567. for fading

  1568. joy

  1569. and turn

  1570. to the

  1571. fount

  1572. of true

  1573. everlasting

  1574. joy.

  1575. joy.

  1576. Turn

  1577. to

  1578. Christ.

  1579. He is

  1580. far more

  1581. willing to

  1582. provide

  1583. abundant

  1584. joy than

  1585. we are

  1586. to seek

  1587. it in

  1588. him.

  1589. But some

  1590. of us,

  1591. I recognize

  1592. some of

  1593. us,

  1594. many of

  1595. us,

  1596. may be

  1597. here this

  1598. morning and

  1599. are spiritually

  1600. dry as

  1601. Christians.

  1602. And if

  1603. you're not

  1604. there right

  1605. now,

  1606. praise God,

  1607. but there

  1608. will likely

  1609. come a time

  1610. in your life

  1611. when you

  1612. will be.

  1613. So we

  1614. need to be

  1615. reminded,

  1616. time and

  1617. time and

  1618. time and

  1619. time again

  1620. that seeking

  1621. joy in

  1622. Christ is

  1623. not a

  1624. one-time

  1625. thing at

  1626. the beginning

  1627. of our

  1628. relationship

  1629. with him.

  1630. This is

  1631. something that

  1632. we need to

  1633. drink again

  1634. and again

  1635. and again

  1636. and be

  1637. satisfied with

  1638. the goodness

  1639. of Christ

  1640. again and

  1641. again and

  1642. again.

  1643. When is the

  1644. last time

  1645. you just

  1646. shut

  1647. everything

  1648. else out

  1649. and just

  1650. spent time

  1651. enjoying

  1652. the Lord?

  1653. this is

  1654. one of

  1655. our key

  1656. values

  1657. here at

  1658. Seaweed Bay.

  1659. We exist

  1660. to magnify

  1661. the glory

  1662. of God

  1663. in the

  1664. gospel of

  1665. Jesus Christ.

  1666. We've got

  1667. three ways

  1668. that we

  1669. do that.

  1670. Number

  1671. one,

  1672. by enjoying

  1673. the Lord.

  1674. So simple,

  1675. yet so

  1676. often

  1677. overlooked.

  1678. Are you

  1679. enjoying

  1680. him?

  1681. Are you

  1682. enjoying

  1683. him?

  1684. Not just

  1685. reading the

  1686. Bible, but

  1687. enjoying the

  1688. Lord and

  1689. the pages

  1690. of his

  1691. word.

  1692. Are you

  1693. enjoying

  1694. him in

  1695. prayer?

  1696. Not just

  1697. praying, but

  1698. enjoying

  1699. fellowship with

  1700. Christ?

  1701. Are you

  1702. enjoying him

  1703. with fellowship

  1704. with your

  1705. fellow brothers

  1706. and sisters

  1707. in Christ

  1708. here at

  1709. your church

  1710. family?

  1711. Not just

  1712. coming to

  1713. church, but

  1714. enjoying the

  1715. Lord together?

  1716. Are you

  1717. enjoying

  1718. him?

  1719. Christians,

  1720. out of all

  1721. people, ought

  1722. to be marked

  1723. by joy, because

  1724. again, church,

  1725. our joy is

  1726. not drawn from

  1727. the temporary

  1728. pleasures of

  1729. this world.

  1730. Our joy is

  1731. rooted and

  1732. drawn from

  1733. the overflowing

  1734. fountain of

  1735. true and

  1736. lasting joy.

  1737. We close

  1738. our time a

  1739. couple of

  1740. weeks ago

  1741. from Isaiah

  1742. 25, and

  1743. I just feel

  1744. compelled to

  1745. do that

  1746. again, because

  1747. future hope

  1748. breeds present

  1749. joy.

  1750. We look to

  1751. the promises

  1752. of God and

  1753. remember what

  1754. we have to

  1755. look forward

  1756. to, but the

  1757. beauty is we

  1758. don't have to

  1759. wait until

  1760. then to enjoy

  1761. it.

  1762. That joy has

  1763. broken in to

  1764. the present.

  1765. Christ has

  1766. come to

  1767. bring joy in

  1768. full.

  1769. What does he

  1770. say?

  1771. These things

  1772. I have

  1773. spoken to

  1774. you that

  1775. my joy

  1776. may be in

  1777. you and

  1778. that your

  1779. joy may be

  1780. full.

  1781. So we close

  1782. once again

  1783. with Isaiah

  1784. 25.

  1785. On this

  1786. mountain, the

  1787. Lord of hosts

  1788. will make for

  1789. all peoples a

  1790. feast of rich

  1791. food, a

  1792. feast of

  1793. well-aged

  1794. wine, of

  1795. rich food

  1796. full of

  1797. morrow, of

  1798. aged wine,

  1799. well-refined.

  1800. God, and

  1801. he will

  1802. swallow up

  1803. on this

  1804. mountain the

  1805. covering that

  1806. is cast over

  1807. all peoples,

  1808. the veil that

  1809. is spread over

  1810. all nations.

  1811. He will

  1812. swallow up

  1813. death forever,

  1814. and the

  1815. Lord God

  1816. will wipe

  1817. away tears

  1818. from all

  1819. faces, and

  1820. the reproach

  1821. of his

  1822. people he

  1823. will take

  1824. away from

  1825. the earth,

  1826. for the

  1827. Lord has

  1828. spoken.

  1829. It will be

  1830. said on that

  1831. day,

  1832. behold,

  1833. this is

  1834. our God.

  1835. We have

  1836. waited for

  1837. him, that

  1838. he might

  1839. save us.

  1840. This is the

  1841. Lord, we

  1842. have waited

  1843. for him.

  1844. Let us be

  1845. glad and

  1846. rejoice in

  1847. his salvation.

  1848. Let's pray.

  1849. Father, your

  1850. word tells us

  1851. you make known

  1852. to us the

  1853. path of

  1854. life.

  1855. In your

  1856. presence there

  1857. is fullness

  1858. of joy.

  1859. At your

  1860. right hand

  1861. are pleasures

  1862. forevermore.

  1863. Lord, lead

  1864. us to delight

  1865. in you.

  1866. Deepen our

  1867. joy in the

  1868. Lord.

  1869. We ask that

  1870. we would be

  1871. marked by

  1872. eternal joy.

  1873. Help us to

  1874. turn from

  1875. things that

  1876. are fading

  1877. and worthless

  1878. and set our

  1879. mind on

  1880. things above.

  1881. We pray

  1882. in Christ's

  1883. name.

  1884. Amen.

  1885. Amen.

  1886. Thank you.
