  1. Please open up your Bibles this morning to the Gospel of John.

  2. Some of you may be here for the first time and think that we just happened to pick John 316 because it's Easter Sunday,

  3. but we've actually been walking through the Gospel of John for a few months now together and in God's providence.

  4. As I laid out the preaching schedule, I realized that here on Easter Sunday,

  5. we'd have the opportunity to preach from one of, if not the most cherished, beloved, summary verses of the Gospel message in the entire Bible.

  6. So if you would, open up your Bibles to John chapter 3. We're going to read from verses 13 through 16.

    John 3 chapter mention

  7. If you didn't bring your own Bible with you, we have a few Bibles there in the seat backs in front of you,

  8. and you can find this passage on page 835 of those Bibles there in front of you.

  9. Either way, I encourage you to have the Bible open because we're looking to the Word of God and not just listening to what I had to say this morning.

  10. So if you would, John 3 verses 13 through 16. Follow along with me as I read.

    John 3:13–16

  11. Jesus says,

  12. No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

  13. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  14. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  15. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

  16. that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  17. This is good news.

  18. This is the Word of God.

  19. Let's bow and pray once more.

  20. Father, we thank you for your perfect Word.

  21. That is inerrant, it's infallible, it's living, and it's active.

  22. And we pray now as it goes forth, would it accomplish the purposes for which you send it.

  23. We pray in Christ's name.

  24. Amen.

  25. Amen.

  26. Friday evening, we gathered here for our Good Friday service just a couple of evenings ago

  27. as we reflected on the death of Christ on the cross.

  28. And the text that we considered here was 1 Corinthians 1 verse 18, which says this.

    1 Corinthians 1:18

  29. It says,

  30. There is an eternal difference here between those who are perishing on one hand and those who are being saved on the other.

  31. And the difference is how you view the word of the cross, the message of the gospel.

  32. Is it foolishness to you or is it the very power of God for your salvation?

  33. I love the story of Gaylord Kambarami.

  34. Maybe you've heard this story before.

  35. Mr. Kambarami was the general secretary of the Bible Society of Zimbabwe.

  36. And he tells the story of how he once tried to sell a copy of the New Testament to a man who,

  37. at least on the surface, appeared interested in what he was selling.

  38. What turned out to be the case was, in fact, the man was not interested in the message of the book.

  39. He was actually interested in the paper.

  40. To his natural eyes, this word of God was just another book.

  41. And he had a bad habit of smoking.

  42. And so to his natural eyes, the size of the pages and the texture of the paper

  43. was just the right size and material for rolling up his cigarettes.

  44. And so Mr. Kambarami, he was confident that he wouldn't be able to change this man's mind,

  45. but even more confident in the power of the message of the gospel, he made this man a deal.

  46. He said, I will give you this book for free on one condition,

  47. that you read every page before you smoke it.

  48. 15 years went by.

  49. People didn't see each other, speak to each other, didn't know what had happened.

  50. Mr. Kambarami attended a convention in Zimbabwe where the speaker was a church evangelist.

  51. And to his surprise, the speaker looked out and singled him out from the audience.

  52. And he said, this man doesn't remember me, but I remember him.

  53. About 15 years ago, he tried to sell me a New Testament.

  54. And when I told him that I would just use the pages to smoke and roll cigarettes,

  55. he said, I'll make you a deal.

  56. You read each page before you smoke it.

  57. Well, I smoked through Matthew.

  58. I smoked through Mark.

  59. And then I smoked through Luke.

  60. But when I got to chapter 3 of John, verse 16, I couldn't smoke anymore.

  61. He said, my life was changed forever.

  62. The message that that page proclaimed.

  63. Friends, the message of the gospel is powerful to save any who would believe it.

  64. This is what we profess this morning.

  65. So I will make you a deal that if you will listen intently for the next 30 minutes or so

  66. to what I have to say from this book, from what we're about to hear from the chapter that we're talking about in John,

  67. if you will truly believe the message of the gospel this morning, then I guarantee that you too will be changed.

  68. We're jumping in the middle here to a conversation that Jesus is having with a man named Nicodemus.

  69. Nicodemus, and he's laid out for him the one necessary condition for anyone to enter into the kingdom of God.

  70. Jesus gave this requirement to Nicodemus, and he gives it to us here this morning.

  71. A humanly impossible requirement.

  72. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  73. Nicodemus' last recorded words to this requirement, you see it there in John 3, verse 9.

    John 3:9

  74. He said, how can these things be?

  75. How can these things be?

  76. Our passage this morning, our verses that we're going to see here in just a few minutes,

  77. is Jesus' response to this question.

  78. He says, it's not by your goodness, not by your heritage, it's not by your works.

  79. It is only by believing the message of the gospel.

  80. By believing the good news of Jesus Christ.

  81. And we see that good news here this morning in four parts.

  82. If you're taking notes, this is going to be our outline this morning.

  83. We see four life-changing truths of the gospel.

  84. Four life-changing truths of the gospel.

  85. We'll see the problem, the provision, the power, and the proof.

  86. The problem, the provision, the power, and the proof.

  87. First, we see here our great problem.

  88. How can these things be?

  89. This was Nicodemus' question.

  90. Well, Jesus says in chapter 3, verse 13, that he is the one, he is the only one who has ascended up into heaven.

  91. The only one who has descended from heaven.

  92. So if we would learn anything about what it means to be born again, anything about what it means to enter the kingdom of God,

  93. we must come and listen to him.

  94. Listen to his authoritative voice.

  95. And here's what he says, verse 14.

  96. Look there.

  97. I love this.

  98. Here's this Pharisee who has spent his entire life devoted to the Old Testament scriptures seeking to understand God's word.

  99. And Jesus here sums it up in a sentence.

  100. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  101. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  102. What is he talking about?

  103. This is a reference that Nicodemus would have understood, but it's probably less familiar to us.

  104. He's referring a story from the book of Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  105. So I'm going to read that story to us.

  106. You can turn there if you'd like.

  107. Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  108. And we'll see what Jesus is saying.

  109. Here in Numbers 21, the people of Israel have come out of Egypt.

  110. They've come out of their slavery in Egypt.

  111. They're wandering in the wilderness.

  112. And here's what happens starting in verse 4.

  113. It says,

  114. Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people.

  115. And they bit the people, so that many of the people of Israel died.

  116. And the people came to Moses and said,

  117. We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you.

  118. Pray to the Lord that he take away the serpents from us.

  119. So Moses prayed for the people, and the Lord said to Moses,

  120. Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole,

  121. And everyone who is bitten when he sees it shall live.

  122. So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole,

  123. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

  124. Now, I would be willing to bet that most of us in the room this morning

  125. Have not been attacked by a big brood of fiery serpents like this event here in Numbers.

  126. But I want us to see several lessons here from this account

  127. Because we share the same essential problem that the Israelites had here in the wilderness.

  128. This is an illustration of our sin.

  129. So lesson number one, sin is foolishness.

  130. Sin is foolishness.

  131. There is nothing rational.

  132. There is nothing logical about sin.

  133. And since we are here on the outside of this story,

  134. We can, from the outside looking in,

  135. See all of this very clearly.

  136. That it's foolish.

  137. Do you see what was going on here?

  138. These people are complaining that their deliverance from slavery is taking too long.

  139. How foolish is this?

  140. It says verse 4, Numbers 21,

  141. They became impatient on the way.

  142. God has just brought them out of their harsh slavery.

  143. He's brought them through the Red Sea.

  144. He's brought judgment on their enemies.

  145. And in their foolish sin, they get impatient.

  146. And what was their complaint?

  147. They don't like the food.

  148. They're hangry.

  149. Verse 5, look there.

  150. The people spoke against God and against Moses.

  151. Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?

  152. For there is no food and no water,

  153. And we loathe this worthless food.

  154. Do you hear that?

  155. There is no food,

  156. And we hate this food.

  157. This is foolish.

  158. That's not really true.

  159. What is true is that they are simply not content with God's plan,

  160. Not content with God's provision,

  161. Not content with God being God.

  162. This is sin,

  163. And this is foolish.

  164. Lesson number two.

  165. Sin brings disastrous consequence.

  166. Sin brings disastrous consequence.

  167. What happened?

  168. Verse 6,

  169. Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people,

  170. And they bit the people,

  171. So that many of the people of Israel died.

  172. This is quick and immediate consequence for sin.

  173. Some of y'all I know don't mind snakes.

  174. I've seen some of you move towards snakes before.

  175. That's not how we roll in my house.

  176. That's not how we handle it.

  177. There's no such thing as a good snake in our house.

  178. A few years ago I was in the garage with one of my sons,

  179. And he was digging through the toys,

  180. And he picked up a helmet that had been there for who knows how long.

  181. I'm not sure.

  182. He picked it up off the ground.

  183. He tipped it up over his head.

  184. You see where this is going?

  185. And the snake came out of the helmet on top of his head,

  186. Bounced off his head onto his foot,

  187. Slithered away.

  188. This was the judgment of God.

  189. I'm not sure who sinned in that moment.

  190. This was our worst nightmare.

  191. My wife didn't go outside the whole summer.

  192. I think we realized that summer that the water behind our house was prime territory for an abundance of serpents in our backyard.

  193. I think I might have killed 20 or 30 snakes that summer.

  194. If you're snake friendly, I don't even feel the need to apologize to you.

  195. My wife did not go outside.

  196. It was terrible.

  197. But that was not even a fraction of what's happening here in numbers.

  198. Of what this must have been like.

  199. Fiery serpents,

  200. Venomous,

  201. Deadly,

  202. Dangerous,

  203. Not just a few,

  204. But enough to come upon the whole people of Israel.

  205. Angry,

  206. Ready to strike.

  207. This is clear,

  208. Immediate,

  209. Visible consequence for the people's sin.

  210. And it says many of the people of Israel died.

  211. This is shocking to us when we read it.

  212. Why?

  213. It's because we don't often see sin and consequence this closely together.

  214. In fact, we often act surprised when we read scripture and we see punishment for sin.

  215. This seems severe to us,

  216. but we have to realize the seriousness of sin.

  217. And until we do,

  218. This will never make sense to us.

  219. The cross will never make sense to us.

  220. Sin is rebellion against God.

  221. And we're told the wages of sin is death.

  222. If you have sinned even once,

  223. You have earned death for your sin.

  224. Anything short of that is mercy.

  225. Sin brings disastrous consequence.

  226. And the reason that this sort of quick consequence surprises us is because in God's patient mercy,

  227. He often withholds the punishment that sin deserves.

  228. And we are so accustomed to the mercy of God that we're surprised by judgment.

  229. But if we truly understood the seriousness of our sin,

  230. Church, we would be surprised by mercy.

  231. All of us live in a flood of incredible mercy.

  232. But friend, do not be deceived into thinking that God's mercy towards sinners will last forever.

  233. Because lesson number three,

  234. All of our sin,

  235. All of our rebellion,

  236. Is an offense to God.

  237. And it will be dealt with.

  238. Ultimately, this event in Numbers chapter 21 is a picture of God's holy wrath against sin.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  239. Some sin carries immediate consequence.

  240. All sin carries eternal consequence.

  241. God is just.

  242. He will judge all sin.

  243. We think that we can hide our sin from God like Adam and Eve hide ourselves in the bushes.

  244. We cannot hide anything from God.

  245. And the day is coming when all will be exposed.

  246. And we all will give an account.

  247. This is a great problem for sinners like me.

  248. And like you.

  249. Our greatest problem.

  250. We need to see.

  251. It's not stress.

  252. It's not our jobs.

  253. It's not our relationships.

  254. It's not our financial situation.

  255. It's not whatever political drama happens to be going on this week.

  256. Our greatest problem.

  257. The greatest problem for sinners.

  258. Is the wrath of God that stands against you in your sin.

  259. Our greatest problem.

  260. Is that we must be born again of the spirit of God.

  261. Washed clean by his spirit.

  262. Or we cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  263. So where do we turn?

  264. We have a great problem.

  265. But second.

  266. The second gospel truth here is that God has made a greater provision.

  267. Second.

  268. God has made a greater provision.

  269. The unbelievably good news of the gospel is that God himself has provided all that we need in order to be saved from his wrath against our sin.

  270. Think back again to Numbers 21.

  271. The Israelites are perishing.

  272. The snakes are biting.

  273. The people are feeling the searing pain and consequence for their guilt and their sin.

  274. Look what he says to Moses in verse 8.

  275. Chapter 21.

  276. Numbers.

  277. He says,

  278. Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole.

  279. And everyone who is bitten when he sees it shall live.

  280. So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole.

  281. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

  282. The Lord provided a way of escape.

  283. And this is incredible.

  284. He does not have to do this.

  285. He does not need to do this.

  286. He's not compelled or constrained by any external cause to make him do this.

  287. He's not compelled by our goodness, by our deserving, by our earning.

  288. It is simply in his sheer heart of mercy and grace towards sinners that he chooses to provide exactly what we need to live.

  289. He provides one effective way to be saved.

  290. One effective way.

  291. One way.

  292. Some people take issue with this.

  293. They want what they call the freedom of options.

  294. To live and to worship how they want to be and to do and to live and to act however they please and all paths be equal.

  295. The Israelites could have chosen any path they wanted.

  296. They could have climbed to higher ground.

  297. They could have shook the snakes off of their feet.

  298. They could have called out the name of any false god of Egypt that they wanted.

  299. And the result would have been that they would perish.

  300. There is one path here.

  301. One provision.

  302. But when you are perishing and someone provides one cure, one cure is all you need.

  303. If it is effective.

  304. And we see here that it was.

  305. The provision of God here in Numbers is that if any were bitten by this fiery serpent that they might simply look at the bronze serpent and they would live.

  306. Now, do you see the comparison that Jesus is making here for us?

  307. Flip back to John chapter 3 if you've been in Numbers.

    John 3 chapter mention

  308. Flip back there to John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  309. Look at verse 14.

  310. Here's the comparison.

  311. Jesus says,

  312. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  313. One effective provision for salvation that sinners like me and like you might not perish.

  314. Jesus is showing us that this story of sin and salvation in the Old Testament was a pointer.

  315. It was an indicator.

  316. It was a shadow to which Jesus is the reality.

  317. He's showing us that he and he alone is the true lasting provision of God for the salvation of sinners.

  318. He and he alone.

  319. That there is salvation in no one else.

  320. There is no other name given among men by which we must be saved.

  321. What Jesus is doing here is he's taking this blurry black and white image of sin and salvation from the Old Testament.

  322. And he's showing us how he magnifies it, enhances it, enlarges it in full color, high definition in himself at the cross.

  323. Just as the Israelites looked upon this image of their curse, they looked upon the very image of that which afflicted them.

  324. They saw it with their eyes.

  325. God's provision held up, lifted up.

  326. They looked upon this gracious provision of God and escaped the wrath of God.

  327. So must we behold the man upon the cross.

  328. My sin upon his shoulders.

  329. The call here is to behold the image of our sin lifted up.

  330. We must look to what he accomplished on the cross and see it with eyes of faith.

  331. And we will live.

  332. Church, the only way that we can be saved from the wrath of God is if Jesus bears it in our place.

  333. This is what Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5.21.

  334. This might be my favorite verse in the Bible.

  335. No sin will be found in the kingdom of God.

  336. Not a trace.

  337. If you have a trace of sin's venom running through your veins, you will not enter.

  338. How many cures do you need for your sickness?

  339. One effective provision.

  340. We praise God.

  341. The good news of the gospel is that God gave his only son.

  342. Christ became sin for us.

  343. That any who look to him in faith might not perish but have eternal life.

  344. Church, this is the power of God for salvation.

  345. The power of God for salvation.

  346. This is our third truth of the gospel this morning.

  347. We see the great power of salvation.

  348. Look to verse 16, John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  349. And here we come to this precious and beautiful and familiar summary of the gospel.

  350. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son.

  351. That whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  352. How can this be?

  353. How can this be?

  354. How is it true that if we simply believe in this man Jesus that we will have eternal life?

  355. How can this be?

  356. It's because this message of the gospel is the power of God for salvation to any who would believe.

  357. Do you believe?

  358. Do you believe this message?

  359. Through faith.

  360. Through faith.

  361. Sinners like me and you are united to Jesus Christ.

  362. You know, faith is not simply believing intellectually.

  363. It's just a fact like you believe any other fact to be true that has no bearing on your life whatsoever.

  364. Like we believe the Eiffel Tower stands in Paris.

  365. No, this faith, this believing in Jesus Christ is an all-in personal trust in the person and work of Christ.

  366. An all-in personal trust that unless this Savior bleeds and dies and rises for me,

  367. that I cannot be saved,

  368. that He has died for me,

  369. that He has risen for me.

  370. So now the life I live,

  371. I live by faith

  372. in the Son of God who loved me

  373. and gave Himself for me.

  374. That is the faith of a Christian.

  375. I think we need to demystify faith.

  376. It's such a precious biblical word,

  377. a precious Christian term,

  378. but culturally it's been so watered down

  379. that it just means absolutely nothing.

  380. Just have faith.

  381. Just believe.

  382. My faith is as good as your faith.

  383. Faith is what saves you.

  384. That's not what this is.

  385. That's not what Christ is saying.

  386. Faith is not the power for salvation.

  387. Faith is a channel.

  388. It's a power cable.

  389. It connects you and your life

  390. to the resurrection power of Jesus Christ

  391. so that if you are connected to Him by faith,

  392. the life that He lives is yours,

  393. the death that He dies to sin in your place is yours,

  394. and the life that He lives

  395. through His resurrection from the grave

  396. by faith is yours.

  397. Faith trusts Christ alone

  398. to be the power of God

  399. for your forgiveness,

  400. for your joy,

  401. for your hope,

  402. for your peace,

  403. and for your eternal life.

  404. This is what He says here in verse 16.

  405. Whoever believes in Him

  406. might not perish

  407. but have eternal life.

  408. Someone asked me this week

  409. what my Easter text was going to be.

  410. I told him it was going to be John 3,

  411. 13 through 16,

  412. and he asked,

  413. well, how are you going to tie that into Easter?

  414. Here it is.

  415. Apart from the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  416. from the dead,

  417. there is no power for salvation.

  418. If Christ is not risen from the grave,

  419. actually, truly,

  420. a fact of history

  421. that He died and He rose,

  422. our hope of eternal life is in vain.

  423. There is no eternal life

  424. apart from the eternal life

  425. that Christ offers

  426. through the power of His resurrection.

  427. The fact that He lives

  428. means that we live in Him

  429. by faith.

  430. We can no more perish

  431. than Christ Jesus can perish again

  432. if we are united to Him by faith.

  433. The grace,

  434. the grave cannot have us

  435. because it could not have Him.

  436. Sin will not conquer us

  437. because He took its best blow

  438. and rendered it powerless

  439. if we are united to Him

  440. by faith.

  441. That's a big if, church.

  442. A necessary if.

  443. In this verse,

  444. John 3.16,

  445. there is both

  446. an incredible availability

  447. and an undeniable exclusivity here.

  448. People want to emphasize

  449. one or the other,

  450. pit them both against each other.

  451. They are both here

  452. and both are precious.

  453. Do not pit them against each other.

  454. It is undeniably clear

  455. that this salvation

  456. is made available

  457. to the whole world.

  458. Whosoever would believe.

  459. And this is,

  460. this is something that would have been

  461. just absolutely stunning

  462. to Nicodemus.

  463. The Jewish understanding

  464. was,

  465. was that God's love,

  466. His covenant love

  467. was only reserved for the Jews.

  468. Now,

  469. only the Jewish people

  470. were included

  471. in the love of God.

  472. Out of all the peoples

  473. of the world,

  474. it was the Jews.

  475. But here,

  476. John tells us,

  477. God so loved

  478. the world.

  479. Not just you,

  480. Nicodemus.

  481. Not just the Jews.

  482. Not just all

  483. and allians.

  484. Even some of those people

  485. from Mount Pleasant.

  486. And Hugee.

  487. in McClellanville.

  488. Some of the transplants

  489. from up north even

  490. might get in on this.

  491. Even me.

  492. Even you.

  493. You see,

  494. this provision of God

  495. is so powerful

  496. that His effectiveness

  497. is not drained

  498. or lessened

  499. or weakened

  500. in the slightest

  501. by making it available

  502. to all the peoples

  503. of the world.

  504. Distance is no issue.

  505. Any who hear this message

  506. and believe

  507. from Jerusalem

  508. to Judea

  509. to the ends of the earth

  510. may not perish

  511. but have eternal life.

  512. Ability is no issue.

  513. The world would rank

  514. and rate you

  515. based on your usefulness.

  516. But God says,

  517. Any who would look

  518. and believe in my Son

  519. may have eternal life.

  520. The weak and the poor

  521. to the rich

  522. and successful.

  523. Resources are no issue.

  524. Stature is no issue.

  525. Sinfulness is no issue.

  526. This is unbelievably powerful.

  527. It does not matter

  528. how far you have gone,

  529. how deeply you have rebelled,

  530. what you have done.

  531. If you would simply look

  532. with eyes of faith

  533. and believe

  534. and trust

  535. in this risen Savior,

  536. you will be forgiven.

  537. You will have eternal life.

  538. That message

  539. is proclaimed

  540. to all who would hear it.

  541. Yet,

  542. there is also

  543. undeniable

  544. exclusivity

  545. here.

  546. Only

  547. those

  548. who believe

  549. in Christ

  550. will be saved.

  551. Only

  552. those

  553. who look

  554. to Jesus Christ

  555. alone

  556. for their salvation

  557. will inherit

  558. eternal life.

  559. Why are not all saved?

  560. Not all look.

  561. Not all

  562. trust.

  563. Not all

  564. believe.

  565. And this

  566. type of all

  567. in personal

  568. trusting and

  569. believing

  570. does not

  571. come from us.

  572. It can't.

  573. It's a gift

  574. of God.

  575. We're saved

  576. by grace

  577. through faith

  578. and this

  579. is not

  580. from yourselves.

  581. It is a gift

  582. of God

  583. that no one

  584. may boast.

  585. The great evangelist

  586. D.L.

  587. Moody

  588. he said

  589. it like

  590. this.

  591. He said

  592. written

  593. on the

  594. outside

  595. of the

  596. gate

  597. of heaven

  598. are the

  599. words

  600. whosoever

  601. may come

  602. and on

  603. the inside

  604. of the

  605. gate

  606. it reads

  607. chosen

  608. before the

  609. foundation

  610. of the

  611. world.

  612. Church

  613. so long

  614. as we

  615. are here

  616. on the

  617. outside

  618. of the

  619. gate

  620. our

  621. responsibility

  622. is to

  623. proclaim

  624. this

  625. message

  626. of hope

  627. far

  628. and wide

  629. to any

  630. who would

  631. hear.

  632. this

  633. radical

  634. availability

  635. of the

  636. gospel

  637. hope

  638. and the

  639. confidence

  640. that we

  641. have

  642. that God

  643. will

  644. save

  645. his own

  646. ought to

  647. compel

  648. us to

  649. cast our

  650. net

  651. far

  652. and

  653. wide

  654. and

  655. proclaim

  656. eternal

  657. life

  658. to any

  659. who would

  660. look to

  661. Christ

  662. and would

  663. listen

  664. and believe

  665. that if

  666. you will

  667. look to

  668. Christ

  669. in faith

  670. you will

  671. live

  672. trusting

  673. that God

  674. will

  675. save

  676. even

  677. as he

  678. has

  679. saved

  680. us

  681. who

  682. believe

  683. this is

  684. a

  685. powerful

  686. powerful

  687. message

  688. church

  689. there's a

  690. fourth and

  691. final

  692. gospel truth

  693. here

  694. that cannot

  695. go overlooked

  696. fourth

  697. we see

  698. the greatest

  699. proof

  700. of the

  701. love of

  702. God

  703. the

  704. greatest

  705. proof

  706. love

  707. of

  708. God

  709. look there

  710. to verse

  711. 16

  712. one more

  713. time

  714. because

  715. here we

  716. see

  717. the

  718. grounds

  719. the

  720. basis

  721. for this

  722. incredible

  723. provision

  724. of God

  725. and it

  726. is

  727. shocking

  728. for

  729. God

  730. so

  731. loved

  732. the

  733. world

  734. that

  735. he

  736. gave

  737. his

  738. only

  739. son

  740. for

  741. God

  742. so

  743. loved

  744. the

  745. world

  746. this

  747. world

  748. that

  749. has

  750. spat

  751. in

  752. his

  753. face

  754. the

  755. world

  756. that

  757. has

  758. rebelled

  759. against

  760. him

  761. in

  762. every

  763. way

  764. the

  765. world

  766. that

  767. would

  768. hang

  769. his

  770. son

  771. upon

  772. the

  773. cross

  774. for

  775. God

  776. so

  777. loved

  778. the

  779. world

  780. that

  781. he

  782. gave

  783. his

  784. only

  785. son

  786. that

  787. whoever

  788. believes

  789. in

  790. him

  791. should

  792. not

  793. perish

  794. but

  795. have

  796. eternal

  797. life

  798. God

  799. loves

  800. us

  801. he

  802. does

  803. not

  804. desire

  805. that

  806. any

  807. should

  808. perish

  809. John

  810. Calvin

  811. the

  812. great

  813. reformer

  814. he

  815. says

  816. of

  817. this

  818. verse

  819. our

  820. minds

  821. cannot

  822. find

  823. calm

  824. repose

  825. until

  826. we

  827. arrive

  828. at

  829. the

  830. unmerited

  831. love

  832. of

  833. God

  834. as

  835. the

  836. matter

  837. of

  838. our

  839. salvation

  840. must

  841. not

  842. be

  843. sought

  844. anywhere

  845. else

  846. than

  847. in

  848. Christ

  849. so

  850. we

  851. must

  852. see

  853. whence

  854. Christ

  855. came

  856. to

  857. us

  858. and

  859. why

  860. he

  861. was

  862. offered

  863. to

  864. be

  865. our

  866. savior

  867. both

  868. points

  869. are

  870. distinctly

  871. stated

  872. to

  873. us

  874. namely

  875. that

  876. faith

  877. in

  878. Christ

  879. brings

  880. life

  881. to

  882. all

  883. and

  884. that

  885. Christ

  886. brought

  887. life

  888. because

  889. the

  890. heavenly

  891. father

  892. loves

  893. the

  894. human

  895. race

  896. and

  897. wishes

  898. that

  899. they

  900. should

  901. not

  902. perish

  903. there

  904. are

  905. many

  906. unknown

  907. truths

  908. about

  909. God

  910. it

  911. will

  912. take

  913. all

  914. of

  915. eternity

  916. for

  917. us

  918. to

  919. to

  920. plunge

  921. the

  922. depths

  923. of

  924. the

  925. mysteries

  926. of

  927. the

  928. wonders

  929. of

  930. who

  931. God

  932. is

  933. but

  934. we

  935. do

  936. know

  937. what

  938. he

  939. has

  940. revealed

  941. to

  942. us

  943. and

  944. we

  945. can

  946. know

  947. with

  948. certainty

  949. without

  950. an

  951. ounce

  952. of

  953. doubt

  954. that

  955. God

  956. loves

  957. us

  958. he

  959. proved

  960. it

  961. on the

  962. cross

  963. imagine

  964. with me

  965. for a

  966. moment

  967. that you

  968. were sick

  969. going about

  970. your life

  971. doing what

  972. you want

  973. to do

  974. not thinking

  975. of it

  976. at all

  977. and

  978. and

  979. suddenly

  980. you

  981. begin

  982. to

  983. notice

  984. the

  985. symptoms

  986. you

  987. become

  988. aware

  989. of your

  990. sickness

  991. that you're

  992. you're

  993. sick

  994. and you

  995. look around

  996. you see

  997. it's not

  998. just

  999. you

  1000. but it's

  1001. everyone

  1002. in your

  1003. family

  1004. everyone

  1005. in your

  1006. family

  1007. is

  1008. sick

  1009. and not

  1010. just

  1011. your

  1012. family

  1013. but

  1014. everyone

  1015. in your

  1016. neighborhood

  1017. not just

  1018. your

  1019. neighborhood

  1020. everyone

  1021. in your

  1022. community

  1023. not just

  1024. in your

  1025. community

  1026. every

  1027. individual

  1028. of

  1029. every

  1030. nation

  1031. in the

  1032. world

  1033. is sick

  1034. and it's

  1035. terminal

  1036. you don't

  1037. know how

  1038. long

  1039. you have

  1040. but you

  1041. know that

  1042. it's

  1043. serious

  1044. and this

  1045. is a

  1046. great

  1047. and terrible

  1048. problem

  1049. but

  1050. you hear

  1051. a word

  1052. somewhere

  1053. there is a

  1054. great

  1055. physician

  1056. who has

  1057. come on

  1058. his own

  1059. dime

  1060. and

  1061. developed

  1062. a cure

  1063. one

  1064. effective

  1065. cure

  1066. would that

  1067. be enough

  1068. for you

  1069. of course

  1070. it would

  1071. the word

  1072. is that

  1073. this cure

  1074. is available

  1075. it's offered

  1076. to you

  1077. free of

  1078. charge

  1079. you couldn't

  1080. afford it

  1081. if you

  1082. tried

  1083. it's simply

  1084. given

  1085. freely

  1086. to any

  1087. who would

  1088. come

  1089. it's available

  1090. to any

  1091. who would

  1092. simply

  1093. come

  1094. and receive

  1095. it

  1096. why would

  1097. you not

  1098. come

  1099. and receive

  1100. the cure

  1101. I can

  1102. think of

  1103. a few

  1104. reasons

  1105. maybe you

  1106. don't

  1107. trust

  1108. the cure

  1109. to be

  1110. effective

  1111. you look

  1112. at it

  1113. scoff

  1114. you laugh

  1115. it off

  1116. you ridicule

  1117. the cure

  1118. and count

  1119. it as

  1120. foolishness

  1121. that anyone

  1122. would trust

  1123. this with

  1124. their life

  1125. maybe you

  1126. don't yet

  1127. realize the

  1128. depth

  1129. and the

  1130. severity

  1131. of your

  1132. sickness

  1133. you assume

  1134. that maybe

  1135. you have

  1136. more time

  1137. than you

  1138. really do

  1139. who could

  1140. know

  1141. maybe you've

  1142. trusted in

  1143. another cure

  1144. you think

  1145. you found

  1146. another solution

  1147. to the

  1148. problem

  1149. and so

  1150. you self

  1151. medicate

  1152. with other

  1153. false

  1154. hopes

  1155. false

  1156. cures

  1157. that will

  1158. never

  1159. work

  1160. but maybe

  1161. you don't

  1162. come because

  1163. the truth

  1164. is deep

  1165. down

  1166. you hate

  1167. the physician

  1168. so you

  1169. rebel

  1170. against him

  1171. and you

  1172. choose rather

  1173. to die

  1174. than to come

  1175. to him

  1176. for life

  1177. but now

  1178. ask yourself

  1179. what would

  1180. this tell

  1181. you about

  1182. the doctor

  1183. no one

  1184. has compelled

  1185. him to do

  1186. this

  1187. he's not

  1188. under any

  1189. compulsion

  1190. and the

  1191. word is

  1192. that this

  1193. cure has

  1194. cost him

  1195. a great

  1196. fortune

  1197. his greatest

  1198. treasure

  1199. that the

  1200. blood of

  1201. his own

  1202. son was

  1203. spilled

  1204. to provide

  1205. this cure

  1206. for you

  1207. and anyone

  1208. else who

  1209. would come

  1210. and be

  1211. made well

  1212. what could

  1213. we conclude

  1214. but that

  1215. this physician

  1216. deeply

  1217. loves

  1218. those

  1219. who are

  1220. perishing

  1221. friend

  1222. if you

  1223. are

  1224. our

  1225. guest

  1226. this

  1227. morning

  1228. I don't

  1229. know where

  1230. you stand

  1231. with God

  1232. but I

  1233. know this

  1234. I know

  1235. that God

  1236. loves you

  1237. and I

  1238. know that

  1239. Christ

  1240. stands

  1241. now

  1242. risen

  1243. and alive

  1244. ready

  1245. and able

  1246. to provide

  1247. the cure

  1248. that you

  1249. need

  1250. for your

  1251. sin

  1252. that in

  1253. him

  1254. and in

  1255. him

  1256. alone

  1257. can we

  1258. have the

  1259. power

  1260. of eternal

  1261. life

  1262. forever

  1263. with God

  1264. so if you're

  1265. hearing these

  1266. words and you

  1267. you don't

  1268. know if you

  1269. have that

  1270. eternal life

  1271. if you

  1272. if you don't

  1273. know whether

  1274. you've been

  1275. made right

  1276. with God

  1277. would you

  1278. now turn

  1279. from your

  1280. sin and

  1281. trust and

  1282. look to

  1283. the risen

  1284. Christ

  1285. and you

  1286. will live

  1287. what do

  1288. you see

  1289. when you

  1290. consider the

  1291. message of

  1292. the gospel

  1293. to the

  1294. perishing

  1295. world

  1296. they see

  1297. foolishness

  1298. a waste

  1299. of time

  1300. a waste

  1301. of energy

  1302. worth no

  1303. more than

  1304. to be rolled

  1305. up and

  1306. smoked away

  1307. but to

  1308. those who

  1309. have been

  1310. born again

  1311. by the

  1312. grace of

  1313. God

  1314. we see

  1315. the

  1316. undeniable

  1317. irreversible

  1318. irrefutable

  1319. proof

  1320. of the

  1321. love of

  1322. God

  1323. for sinners

  1324. God

  1325. demonstrates

  1326. his own

  1327. love for

  1328. us in

  1329. this that

  1330. while we

  1331. were still

  1332. sinners

  1333. Christ

  1334. died

  1335. for us

  1336. and we

  1337. know by

  1338. the grace

  1339. of God

  1340. that no

  1341. matter what

  1342. comes against

  1343. us in

  1344. this life

  1345. whatever

  1346. struggle

  1347. whatever

  1348. temptation

  1349. whatever

  1350. hardship

  1351. whatever

  1352. loss

  1353. whatever

  1354. suffering

  1355. we are

  1356. sure that

  1357. neither

  1358. death

  1359. nor life

  1360. nor angels

  1361. nor rulers

  1362. nor things

  1363. present

  1364. nor things

  1365. to come

  1366. nor powers

  1367. nor height

  1368. nor depth

  1369. nor anything

  1370. else in

  1371. all creation

  1372. will be able

  1373. to separate

  1374. us from

  1375. the love

  1376. of God

  1377. in Christ

  1378. Jesus

  1379. our Lord

  1380. the cross

  1381. of Christ

  1382. powerfully

  1383. proves

  1384. God's love

  1385. for the world

  1386. and the

  1387. resurrection

  1388. of Christ

  1389. powerfully

  1390. secures

  1391. our experience

  1392. of that

  1393. love

  1394. in ever

  1395. increasing

  1396. depth

  1397. and delight

  1398. for the rest

  1399. of eternity

  1400. this is good

  1401. news

  1402. church

  1403. should you

  1404. ever doubt

  1405. the depth

  1406. and seriousness

  1407. of your sin

  1408. would you

  1409. remember the

  1410. message of the

  1411. gospel

  1412. the love

  1413. should you

  1414. ever doubt

  1415. the holiness

  1416. of God

  1417. his justice

  1418. would you

  1419. remember

  1420. the message

  1421. of the

  1422. gospel

  1423. will you

  1424. ever doubt

  1425. the power

  1426. of God

  1427. for the

  1428. salvation

  1429. of any

  1430. who

  1431. believes

  1432. should you

  1433. remember

1434. the message of the gospel.

1435. Should you ever doubt the love of God

1436. for a sinner like you,

1437. remember the message of the gospel.

1438. Look to Christ and live.

  1439. Let's pray.

1440. Lord, we thank you and we praise you

1441. for your love, undeserved, unmerited,

1442. but given freely to all

1443. who come to Christ in faith.

1444. We thank you for this promise of eternal life

1445. that whosoever believes in him

1446. should not perish but have eternal life.

1447. We pray that if there are any here among us

1448. this morning who don't know you,

1449. would you give them that gift of eternal life.

1450. And Lord, for those who do belong to you,

1451. Father, we pray that we would be moved

  1452. and encouraged and nourished

1453. by the love of God

1454. and the hope of the resurrection.

1455. We pray this in Christ's name.

  1456. Amen.

  1457. Amen.

  1458. Amen.

  1459. Amen.

  1460. Amen.

  1461. Amen.

  1462. Amen.

  1463. Amen.

  1464. Amen.
