  1. Thank you, brother.

  2. This morning we continue in the book of John, chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  3. And it's my privilege to read the passage this morning.

  4. But before I read it, I just want to remind us that we're still in the section of John

  5. where Christ has received Nicodemus and they're in conversation.

  6. And by the grace of Christ, he is sharing the truth with Nicodemus so that Nicodemus could

  7. come to see the only means of salvation.

  8. And so it's beautifully articulated here in chapter 3, this message of being born again.

  9. And so this morning we will focus on verse 17 and following down through verse 21.

  10. But for sake of context, I want to start reading in verse 14.

  11. And then we'll read down through verse 21.

  12. So if you would join me as I read, starting in verse 14, it says this,

  13. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  14. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  15. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

  16. that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

  17. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

  18. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  19. Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

  20. but whoever does not believe is condemned already,

  21. because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  22. And this is a judgment.

  23. The light has come into the world,

  24. and people love the darkness rather than the light,

  25. because their works were evil.

  26. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light,

  27. and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

  28. But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  29. so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

  30. Let's pray briefly.

  31. Fathers, we open your word this morning.

  32. I pray that you would open our eyes and our ears spiritually,

  33. that we might see the truth that is here in your word,

  34. and we might hear from you as you would help us to understand your word.

  35. Lord, I pray that you would move us on a heart level,

  36. that, Father, you would open our hearts to receive readily

  37. that which you share through your word this morning.

  38. I pray that you would bless this time as we open your word,

  39. and I pray it in your name.

  40. Amen.

  41. So I've got five points I want you to see out of this passage this morning.

  42. I feel like Jonathan.

  43. I've got five points,

  44. and if you like taking notes,

  45. you might want to write down these five points.

  46. Point number one is this.

  47. We see in verse 17,

  48. I want you to see the structure of the sentence,

  49. which there's a message in it that I want you to see.

  50. So if I would abbreviate this sentence,

  51. it says this,

  52. God did not, but did.

  53. God did not, but did.

  54. And I'll fill in the blank here in a second,

  55. but I want to say this,

  56. is that when we see the negative coming before the positive,

  57. what it does is it emphasizes the positive.

  58. It highlights the greatness of the positive.

  59. So if we fill in the blank here,

  60. the verse says this,

  61. God did not send his son Jesus into the world to condemn the world,

  62. but God did send his son Jesus into the world

  63. in order that the world might be saved.

  64. The first point is this,

  65. we see the purpose of God in verse 17,

  66. that the purpose of God is salvation.

  67. And who is this salvation for?

  68. The verse reveals that this is a global salvation.

  69. This is not a salvation that is only for the Jewish nation.

  70. You know, we've said it before in chapter 3,

  71. as we've preached week after week after week on chapter 3,

  72. we've said this,

  73. is that Nicodemus had a Jewish mindset.

  74. Matter of fact, the text says this,

  75. he was a ruler of the Jews.

  76. It says in verse 1.

  77. And then in verse 10, it says,

  78. he was the teacher of Israel.

  79. So this Jewish man who was a teacher of Israel

  80. did not understand.

  81. understand that the Old Testament

  82. prophesied about a coming Messiah,

  83. this king that would come

  84. through the lineage of David,

  85. of the line of David,

  86. and he would be a king,

  87. this great and mighty king,

  88. the greatest of all kings.

  89. But they thought that meant

  90. that he would be an earthly ruler.

  91. That he would be a great king

  92. of this great nation of Israel

  93. and all these other nations

  94. that had been a hindrance to Israel

  95. for all these years.

  96. Even this Roman power

  97. that had their thumb on Israel,

  98. they thought that when the Messiah come,

  99. he would set up his throne.

  100. And truly, that's what the Old Testament said.

  101. But it's speaking spiritually.

  102. It's not speaking physically.

  103. So Nicodemus misunderstood the Old Testament.

  104. This teacher of Israel misunderstood

  105. that this king was not going to have

  106. an earthly reign.

  107. He was not going to destroy

  108. all these nations

  109. so that Israel as a nation,

  110. a physical nation,

  111. would be the greatest of all nations.

  112. That is not what was meant.

  113. Nicodemus thought that there was only one nation

  114. that were children of God.

  115. Only one nation that was chosen of God.

  116. He saw himself as being a part of that nation,

  117. this Jewish nation.

  118. A nation that God first revealed himself to.

  119. And he thought because he was a Jew,

  120. he was saved.

  121. Because he was a Jew,

  122. he had eternal life.

  123. So when Christ graciously shares this

  124. with Nicodemus,

  125. we've got to understand

  126. that he would have been shocked.

  127. He would have not understood

  128. up until that moment

  129. the breadth or the width

  130. or the greatness

  131. or the wideness of the salvation

  132. that God had intended.

  133. And so we read it again.

  134. For God did not send his son

  135. into the world

  136. to condemn the world.

  137. What is he speaking of?

  138. He's speaking of the world

  139. that is the entity of earth,

  140. all the nations,

  141. the Gentiles.

  142. So if we read that passage

  143. with the understanding

  144. of what Christ is saying

  145. to Nicodemus,

  146. he's saying,

  147. Nicodemus,

  148. Christ did not come

  149. to set up his throne

  150. that the Jewish nation

  151. would be the greatest of nations

  152. so that he could destroy

  153. all these other nations.

  154. To judge them.

  155. And in essence,

  156. to condemn them.

  157. That is not why he came.

  158. That is not the purpose

  159. of the Messiah.

  160. Matter of fact,

  161. the purpose of the Messiah

  162. is totally different

  163. than what you're thinking,

  164. Nicodemus.

  165. It says,

  166. God did send his son

  167. in order that the nations

  168. might be saved

  169. through his son,

  170. Jesus Christ.

  171. Isn't it beautiful?

  172. To see so clearly

  173. the picture,

  174. the purpose

  175. of God

  176. in sending his son.

  177. it's for the salvation

  178. that is widely offered

  179. to all.

  180. And we'll see that

  181. a little later

  182. as we look at

  183. one of these other

  184. five points.

  185. But I want us to see,

  186. and I want to remind us,

  187. I want us to see

  188. that Nicodemus,

  189. as a Jew,

  190. would have known

  191. the Old Testament.

  192. He would have recognized

  193. these references

  194. that Christ was sharing

  195. with him.

  196. And so even this reference,

  197. Nicodemus should recognize

  198. it in the Old Testament.

  199. We've looked at it before,

  200. but I want to look at it again.

  201. It's in Isaiah 52 and 53.

  202. And I'm going to jump around

  203. a little bit

  204. because of sake of time

  205. just to hit a couple

  206. of highlights

  207. in Isaiah 52 and 53.

  208. But hear the word of God

  209. through the prophet Isaiah

  210. as he shares about his plan.

  211. Behold, my servant,

  212. Jesus, my servant,

  213. my son,

  214. my one and only son,

  215. that servant.

  216. Behold, my servant

  217. shall act wisely.

  218. He will act

  219. in a sinless way.

  220. He will act

  221. in a perfect way.

  222. He shall be high

  223. and lifted up.

  224. Yes, he'll be exalted

  225. in God's eyes.

  226. God will say,

  227. well done,

  228. my good and faithful son.

  229. But he will be exalted

  230. in another way.

  231. He'll be exalted

  232. or placed on a cross

  233. for all to see.

  234. And he says,

  235. he was despised.

  236. That is,

  237. Jesus was despised

  238. and rejected by men.

  239. He wasn't rejected

  240. by the Father,

  241. was he?

  242. He was applauded

  243. by the Father.

  244. Many times,

  245. audibly,

  246. God said in the audience

  247. of people,

  248. this is my son

  249. whom I am well pleased.

  250. Hear him.

  251. This son,

  252. Jesus,

  253. who never sinned,

  254. who lived

  255. a God-honoring life,

  256. who only did

  257. what the Father

  258. told him to do,

  259. who only said

  260. what the Father

  261. put in his mouth.

  262. This son,

  263. he was despised

  264. and rejected by men,

  265. even his own countrymen.

  266. Even the leaders

  267. of the Jewish nation

  268. rejected him

  269. and put him on a cross.

  270. He was despised

  271. and rejected by men,

  272. a man of sorrows

  273. and acquainted with grief.

  274. Surely he has borne

  275. our griefs.

  276. You know that this

  277. was written

  278. roughly 700 years

  279. before Christ came?

  280. God is telling us

  281. 700 years before

  282. that he was going

  283. to send his son

  284. and these things

  285. would be true.

  286. Nicodemus,

  287. do you hear

  288. what the prophecies

  289. are talking about?

  290. He was smitten

  291. by God

  292. and afflicted.

  293. He was pierced.

  294. Obviously,

  295. we know that to mean

  296. on the cross.

  297. He was pierced

  298. for our transgressions.

  299. He was crushed

  300. for our iniquities.

  301. Do you see

  302. the purpose of God

  303. in these verses

  304. in Isaiah?

  305. that God sent

  306. his son

  307. for those

  308. who would be saved.

  309. That he would die

  310. for our iniquities.

  311. He would be crushed

  312. for us.

  313. With his wounds,

  314. we are healed.

  315. The Lord has laid

  316. on him

  317. the iniquity

  318. of us all.

  319. That is,

  320. those of us

  321. who trust in him

  322. as our Lord

  323. and Savior

  324. for salvation.

  325. Verse 10 says,

  326. Yet it was the will

  327. of God

  328. to crush him.

  329. Isn't it amazing

  330. that God would send

  331. his son

  332. with the purpose

  333. of crushing

  334. his son?

  335. That Christ

  336. would have to

  337. take on our sin

  338. in order that

  339. we might know

  340. the forgiveness

  341. and the righteousness

  342. that God would offer us

  343. through him,

  344. his son.

  345. He has put him

  346. to grief

  347. when his soul

  348. makes an offering

  349. for guilt.

  350. You know,

  351. the purpose of God

  352. is that he would

  353. send his son

  354. in order that

  355. his son

  356. would make

  357. an offering

  358. for us,

  359. his bride.

  360. Isn't it beautiful

  361. to see the purpose

  362. of God

  363. in its own display

  364. here is that

  365. God sent his son

  366. in order that

  367. we might be

  368. saved.

  369. So it begs

  370. the question,

  371. why?

  372. Why?

  373. Why would God

  374. send his one

  375. and only son

  376. to die

  377. and to suffer

  378. and be crushed?

  379. Why?

  380. It's because

  381. the condition

  382. of us,

  383. the condition

  384. of men.

  385. What is our condition?

  386. What state

  387. are we in?

  388. Well,

  389. Nicodemus thought

  390. that he was fine.

  391. Nicodemus came

  392. to him by night.

  393. He saw something

  394. different in the life

  395. of Christ.

  396. He said,

  397. the things that you're

  398. doing,

  399. these miraculous things,

  400. they can't happen

  401. unless God's involved.

  402. Tell me what's

  403. going on here.

  404. something points

  405. to you being

  406. the instrument

  407. of God.

  408. And what does

  409. he say to

  410. Nicodemus?

  411. Nicodemus,

  412. you think you're

  413. right with the

  414. Lord,

  415. but you're not.

  416. You think

  417. because you know

  418. the Old Testament

  419. text,

  420. you think because

  421. you're moral

  422. in the way you

  423. live,

  424. you think because

  425. you have

  426. been born

  427. into this

  428. nation,

  429. this Jewish

  430. nation,

  431. that your

  432. heritage is

  433. enough for you

  434. to be the

  435. child of God.

  436. You think that

  437. you'll have

  438. eternal life

  439. because you're

  440. a part of

  441. this nation,

  442. but you don't

  443. understand that

  444. you have to

  445. be born again.

  446. You're in a

  447. condition that

  448. separates you

  449. from a holy

  450. God.

  451. You're in a

  452. condition of

  453. sin.

  454. That's why I

  455. needed to send

  456. my son,

  457. Nicodemus.

  458. That's why

  459. Christ says,

  460. I am he.

  461. Do you

  462. believe?

  463. Nicodemus,

  464. let me show

  465. you by

  466. looking at

  467. multiple Old

  468. Testament texts

  469. that I am

  470. the Messiah,

  471. the one who

  472. speaks to you

  473. and he.

  474. You need to

  475. be born again.

  476. Why?

  477. Because you're

  478. in a condition

  479. of sin.

  480. And we look

  481. at verse 19

  482. and we see

  483. Christ talking

  484. about mankind

  485. here.

  486. What does he

  487. say?

  488. It says,

  489. people love

  490. the darkness.

  491. You know

  492. that's true

  493. of all of

  494. us?

  495. That we

  496. love the

  497. darkness.

  498. That is our

  499. natural bent.

  500. What is

  501. darkness?

  502. Darkness is

  503. everything that

  504. does not honor

  505. God.

  506. Everything that

  507. is in rebellion

  508. to God is in

  509. this category of

  510. darkness.

  511. Notice,

  512. too,

  513. in verse 18.

  514. Whoever does

  515. not believe

  516. is condemned

  517. already.

  518. Do you know

  519. that we're in

  520. a state of

  521. condemnation?

  522. That our

  523. condition is

  524. this condition

  525. of condemnation.

  526. We are

  527. condemned.

  528. Why?

  529. Because of

  530. our sin.

  531. Isn't it

  532. interesting that

  533. as we read

  534. the book of

  535. John,

  536. that there was

  537. God sent

  538. someone before

  539. Christ.

  540. God sent

  541. this forerunner.

  542. And what was

  543. the message

  544. of this

  545. forerunner,

  546. John the

  547. Baptist?

  548. What was

  549. his message?

  550. Repent!

  551. To this

  552. Jewish nation,

  553. he says,

  554. repent.

  555. Repent of

  556. what,

  557. John?

  558. Of your

  559. sin.

  560. Do you

  561. not see

  562. your sin?

  563. Do you

  564. not recognize

  565. your separation

  566. from God?

  567. Just because

  568. you show up

  569. at the temple,

  570. just because

  571. you bow,

  572. just because

  573. you read,

  574. that doesn't

  575. mean that

  576. you're in

  577. right standing

  578. with God.

  579. Do you

  580. not see

  581. your separation?

  582. Do you

  583. not see

  584. your sinfulness?

  585. Nicodemus.

  586. And I

  587. love the

  588. way that

  589. Jesus brought

  590. back Numbers

  591. 21 to the

  592. mind of

  593. Nicodemus.

  594. He says,

  595. Nicodemus,

  596. we've all been

  597. bitten by the

  598. serpent and

  599. we're in

  600. trouble.

  601. We've all

  602. been bitten

  603. by the

  604. serpent.

  605. You know,

  606. it also takes

  607. us back to

  608. the garden,

  609. doesn't it?

  610. In a sense,

  611. we were bitten

  612. by the serpent.

  613. The serpent

  614. beguiled Eve.

  615. The serpent

  616. spoke a lie

  617. and Adam

  618. and Eve

  619. embraced the

  620. lie and

  621. they chose

  622. to rebel

  623. against God.

  624. They chose

  625. to sin and

  626. as a result,

  627. they were

  628. forever out

  629. of the

  630. garden.

  631. They were

  632. kicked out,

  633. if you will,

  634. or forced

  635. to leave

  636. the presence

  637. of God

  638. because of

  639. their sinful

  640. state.

  641. Do you

  642. know that

  643. all men

  644. are born

  645. that way?

  646. In this

  647. condition of

  648. sinfulness?

  649. You know,

  650. Paul used

  651. to think

  652. like Nicodemus?

  653. Do you

  654. remember the

  655. text in

  656. Philippians

  657. where Paul

  658. is sharing

  659. about the

  660. way he

  661. used to

  662. live?

  663. He said,

  664. listen,

  665. I was a

  666. Jew,

  667. circumcised,

  668. in other words,

  669. I was of the

  670. right family,

  671. the right

  672. nation,

  673. circumcised the

  674. eighth day,

  675. I did it

  676. just right.

  677. I lived a

  678. God-honoring

  679. life,

  680. I was faithful

  681. as far as

  682. righteousness,

  683. I was leading

  684. the pack.

  685. Matter of

  686. fact,

  687. I was so

  688. full of

  689. zeal that

  690. I was going

  691. from city

  692. to city

  693. to city

  694. to kill

  695. people or

  696. lock them

  697. up in

  698. prison that

  699. we're doing

  700. anything other

  701. than what

  702. is told us

  703. to do in

  704. the law,

  705. the Jewish

  706. law.

  707. And you

  708. know what

  709. happened to

  710. Paul on

  711. the road to

  712. Damascus?

  713. He had an

  714. encounter with

  715. Jesus.

  716. And you

  717. know what he

  718. realized?

  719. He realized,

  720. oh no,

  721. I'm in

  722. trouble.

  723. I thought

  724. that all of

  725. this was

  726. honoring to

  727. you,

  728. God.

  729. He said,

  730. no,

  731. no,

  732. you're

  733. persecuting

  734. me.

  735. And so

  736. what did

  737. Paul say

  738. in Philippians?

  739. He said,

  740. everything that

  741. I used to

  742. think merited

  743. salvation,

  744. I recognize

  745. it now that

  746. it's all

  747. garbage.

  748. It's all

  749. junk.

  750. It's all

  751. a lie.

  752. He said,

  753. it's worthy

  754. to be thrown

  755. on the

  756. garbage heap.

  757. Everything that

  758. I used to

  759. trust in for

  760. my salvation,

  761. every moral

  762. thing that I

  763. ever did,

  764. every attempt,

  765. my fleshly

  766. attempt to

  767. honor the

  768. law is

  769. garbage.

  770. In light

  771. of knowing

  772. Christ Jesus,

  773. my Lord.

  774. Paul would

  775. say,

  776. I've come to

  777. see that not

  778. because I'm a

  779. Jew am I

  780. saved,

  781. not because I'm

  782. a Jew do I

  783. have eternal

  784. life,

  785. I only have

  786. eternal life

  787. because of what

  788. Jesus has done

  789. through the

  790. purpose of God

  791. on my behalf

  792. that he would

  793. die for me,

  794. that he would

  795. pay on the

  796. cross for my

  797. sins.

  798. That is the

  799. provision of

  800. God and the

  801. condition of

  802. man.

  803. I want you to

  804. see what Paul

  805. says when he

  806. talks about

  807. the exclusivity

  808. of the Jewish

  809. people who

  810. thought that they

  811. were all in

  812. good standing

  813. with God.

  814. And he says

  815. this by way of

  816. argument to help

  817. the Jews

  818. understand.

  819. there's this

  820. tendency for

  821. Jews to think

  822. we're better

  823. than everybody

  824. else,

  825. we don't even

  826. marry with

  827. anybody else,

  828. we don't even

  829. spend time with

  830. anybody else,

  831. we don't want

  832. to talk to

  833. anybody else,

  834. we've got to

  835. keep ourselves

  836. clean by not

  837. associating with

  838. these other

  839. nations and

  840. people,

  841. etc.

  842. And we see

  843. as the early

  844. church was

  845. growing there's

  846. this difficulty

  847. of accepting

  848. Gentiles,

  849. a difficulty of

  850. eating with

  851. them,

  852. difficulty of

  853. understanding

  854. that they're

  855. God's people

  856. too.

  857. And Paul

  858. says it like

  859. this in

  860. Romans 3,

  861. he says,

  862. are Jews

  863. any better

  864. off?

  865. No,

  866. not at all.

  867. For we,

  868. that is Jews,

  869. have already

  870. charged that

  871. all,

  872. both Jews

  873. and Greeks,

  874. are under

  875. sin.

  876. As it is

  877. written,

  878. by the way,

  879. in Psalm 14

  880. and Psalm 53,

  881. we see this,

  882. it's written,

  883. it says,

  884. none is

  885. righteous,

  886. he's speaking

  887. to the Jews

  888. as well as

  889. the Gentiles.

  890. none is

  891. righteous,

  892. not one,

  893. no one

  894. understands,

  895. no one

  896. seeks for

  897. God.

  898. All have

  899. turned aside

  900. together,

  901. they have

  902. become worthless,

  903. that is without

  904. worth.

  905. No one does

  906. good,

  907. not even

  908. one.

  909. Paul,

  910. are you saying

  911. that the Jews

  912. are not a special

  913. class of people,

  914. that they

  915. don't have a

  916. special gift

  917. and blessing?

  918. blessing?

  919. In a sense,

  920. they were

  921. gifted the

  922. revelation of

  923. God showing

  924. himself to

  925. them,

  926. so in a

  927. sense,

  928. they have

  929. had a

  930. huge blessing

  931. given to

  932. them,

  933. and yet they

  934. didn't understand

  935. their sin.

  936. They didn't

  937. understand how

  938. to be in

  939. this right

  940. relationship with

  941. God,

  942. though they

  943. had the

  944. law.

  945. So the

  946. second point,

  947. if you

  948. hadn't picked

  949. it up,

  950. is that men

  951. are in a

  952. condition of

  953. sin and

  954. without hope.

  955. Except that

  956. God would

  957. provide salvation

  958. to those who

  959. are in a

  960. condition of

  961. sin,

  962. they would

  963. have no

  964. hope.

  965. You know

  966. that's you

  967. and me?

  968. Unless he

  969. provides salvation

  970. for you and

  971. me,

  972. those of us

  973. who are

  974. under sin,

  975. who are

  976. condemned,

  977. who are

  978. bitten by

  979. the serpent,

  980. who love

  981. darkness rather

  982. than light,

  983. we have no

  984. hope.

  985. The third

  986. point is

  987. the provision,

  988. is Jesus.

  989. The provision

  990. of God we

  991. see in verse

  992. 17,

  993. for God did

  994. not send

  995. his son into

  996. the world to

  997. condemn,

  998. but he sent

  999. his son in

  1000. order that we

  1001. might be

  1002. saved.

  1003. Let me just

  1004. say this,

  1005. the word of

  1006. God declares

  1007. we'll never

  1008. be saved,

  1009. we can't be

  1010. saved apart

  1011. from anything

  1012. else except

  1013. Jesus.

  1014. There's no

  1015. good deed you

  1016. can do,

  1017. there's no

  1018. school you

  1019. can go to

  1020. and learn

  1021. enough,

  1022. there's no

  1023. morality that

  1024. you can

  1025. achieve that's

  1026. going to earn

  1027. you salvation.

  1028. Apart from

  1029. the provision

  1030. of God that

  1031. is his one

  1032. and only son,

  1033. that is Jesus

  1034. Christ our

  1035. Lord,

  1036. there is no

  1037. salvation for

  1038. anyone.

  1039. I love how

  1040. it talks about

  1041. it in this

  1042. passage.

  1043. it says

  1044. that,

  1045. and this

  1046. is the

  1047. judgment,

  1048. that is,

  1049. this is the

  1050. evidence of

  1051. this sinful

  1052. life,

  1053. this rebellion,

  1054. this separation,

  1055. is that the

  1056. light has come

  1057. and they love

  1058. the darkness

  1059. more than the

  1060. light.

  1061. Nicodemus

  1062. would have

  1063. immediately

  1064. recognized the

  1065. prophetic passage

  1066. out of Isaiah.

  1067. And that

  1068. passage out of

  1069. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  1070. 9 says this,

  1071. the people who

  1072. walked in

  1073. darkness have

  1074. seen a great

  1075. light.

  1076. Again,

  1077. pointing toward

  1078. Christ,

  1079. this is the

  1080. same passage

  1081. that says,

  1082. for unto us

  1083. a child is

  1084. born,

  1085. unto us a

  1086. son is

  1087. given,

  1088. and the

  1089. government

  1090. shall be on

  1091. his shoulders,

  1092. his name

  1093. shall be called

  1094. Wonderful,

  1095. Counselor,

  1096. Mighty God,

  1097. Everlasting

  1098. Father,

  1099. Prince of

  1100. Peace.

  1101. And it

  1102. says,

  1103. the people who

  1104. walked in

  1105. darkness have

  1106. seen a great

  1107. light.

  1108. What is that

  1109. light?

  1110. It's Jesus.

  1111. That Jesus

  1112. has come and

  1113. they didn't even

  1114. recognize him.

  1115. Remember what

  1116. John the Baptist

  1117. says,

  1118. there's one among

  1119. you whom you

  1120. don't even know

  1121. whose latchet of

  1122. his shoes I'm not

  1123. worthy to even

  1124. unloose.

  1125. You come to me

1126. and ask me who I

  1127. am.

  1128. I'm not the

  1129. Messiah.

  1130. I'm the voice of

  1131. one crying in the

  1132. wilderness.

  1133. There he is.

  1134. Trust him.

  1135. There he is,

  1136. the Messiah.

  1137. Do you see?

  1138. That's the one

  1139. that was foretold.

  1140. Apart from him

  1141. there is no

  1142. salvation.

  1143. Beautiful picture

  1144. of this light.

  1145. You know that

  1146. this is not new

  1147. to our ears

  1148. in the book of

  1149. John.

  1150. If we turn back

  1151. to chapter 1,

  1152. verse 3 and 4

  1153. said this,

  1154. all things were

  1155. made through him

  1156. and without him

  1157. was not anything

  1158. made that was

  1159. made.

  1160. in him was

  1161. life.

  1162. That is,

  1163. in Christ

  1164. was life.

  1165. And the life

  1166. was the light

  1167. of men.

  1168. There we go

  1169. again.

  1170. This theme

  1171. that Christ

  1172. is the light.

  1173. What does the

  1174. light do to

  1175. darkness?

  1176. It illuminates

  1177. it.

  1178. So physically

  1179. speaking,

  1180. a physical light

  1181. is going to

  1182. illuminate

  1183. darkness.

  1184. I've been in

  1185. a cave before

  1186. where there

  1187. were no lights

  1188. and you'd poke

  1189. yourself in the

  1190. eye and you'd

  1191. never see your

  1192. finger coming.

  1193. It was as dark

  1194. as anything

  1195. I've ever seen.

  1196. One guy

  1197. struck a match

  1198. and it just

  1199. went pew.

  1200. The whole cave

  1201. area was a

  1202. light.

  1203. Now it wasn't

  1204. perfectly clear

  1205. everywhere,

  1206. but if you're

  1207. looking that way

  1208. it illuminated

  1209. a lot of

  1210. things.

  1211. The beautiful

  1212. picture of the

  1213. light that

  1214. penetrates the

  1215. physical darkness

  1216. is only a

  1217. pointer,

  1218. is only a

  1219. way of sharing

  1220. a spiritual

  1221. message.

  1222. And the

  1223. spiritual message

  1224. is the light

  1225. that is Christ

  1226. who is truth

  1227. and is light

  1228. has come into

  1229. the world

  1230. that were

  1231. dark.

  1232. They didn't

  1233. understand.

  1234. They didn't

  1235. know the

  1236. depth of what

  1237. God was saying

  1238. even through the

  1239. scriptures.

  1240. Their mind

  1241. was darkened.

  1242. They were in

  1243. a sense blind

  1244. to the reality

  1245. of their condition,

  1246. blind to the

  1247. reality of their

  1248. sin, blind to

  1249. the reality

  1250. they needed

  1251. Jesus.

  1252. And when Jesus

  1253. came, what did

  1254. he do?

  1255. He illuminated

  1256. it.

  1257. He showed

  1258. us as he

  1259. showed Nicodemus.

  1260. Nicodemus,

  1261. you need to be

  1262. born again.

  1263. This beautiful

  1264. concept is

  1265. highlighted in

  1266. John 8.

  1267. If we peek

  1268. forward a little

  1269. bit and look

  1270. at verse 12,

  1271. it says this.

  1272. Christ speaking,

  1273. Jesus spoke to

  1274. them saying,

  1275. I am the

  1276. light of the

  1277. world.

  1278. I am the

  1279. light of the

  1280. world.

  1281. Apart from

  1282. the illumination

  1283. that Christ

  1284. gives, we will

  1285. never see.

  1286. I am the

  1287. light of the

  1288. world.

  1289. Whoever

  1290. follows me

  1291. will not

  1292. walk in

  1293. darkness.

  1294. Whoever

  1295. follows their

  1296. own ways

  1297. are walking

  1298. in darkness,

  1299. but whoever

  1300. turns and

  1301. follows Christ

  1302. will not walk

  1303. in darkness,

  1304. because Christ

  1305. illuminates what

  1306. honors God.

  1307. Christ

  1308. illuminates our

  1309. sin.

  1310. Christ says

  1311. this, whoever

  1312. follows me will

  1313. not walk in

  1314. darkness, but

  1315. will have the

  1316. light of life.

  1317. do you know

  1318. that when we

  1319. turn and follow

  1320. Christ and we

  1321. recognize him as

  1322. the means of our

  1323. salvation that we

  1324. have light, he

  1325. begins to show us.

  1326. You know what it

1327. says in the word of

  1328. God about the

  1329. Holy Spirit?

  1330. The Holy Spirit

  1331. comes to indwell

  1332. those who trust in

  1333. him, and he

  1334. leads us and guides

  1335. us into all truth.

1336. He shows us what it

  1337. looks like to honor

  1338. God.

  1339. He shows us our

  1340. sin, and he says,

  1341. no, no, no, no,

  1342. no, don't walk

  1343. that way, walk this

  1344. way, walk in a

  1345. way that honors

  1346. the Father.

  1347. The fourth point

  1348. is this.

  1349. I saw people

  1350. start writing.

  1351. That's really

  1352. interesting.

  1353. Jonathan, I've

  1354. never done that

  1355. before, but that's

  1356. pretty cool.

  1357. Everybody's pen

  1358. went to their

  1359. paper.

  1360. The fourth point

  1361. is this.

  1362. I want you to

  1363. see that three

  1364. times in this

  1365. passage, we see

  1366. this invitation.

  1367. And you know,

  1368. Christ gave, there's

  1369. an invitation to

  1370. Nicodemus that's

  1371. inferred here, and I

1372. want us to see it.

1373. But I also want us

  1374. to see that invitation

1375. is for you and me.

1376. So if we were to

1377. look back in 14 and

  1378. 15, it's the picture

  1379. of that wilderness

  1380. event where they

  1381. rebelled against God,

  1382. they rebelled against

  1383. God's leadership, and

  1384. God sent serpents to

  1385. judge them, and

  1386. they began, the

  1387. serpents would bite

  1388. them, and they

  1389. began to die, and

1390. to die, and to die,

1391. and to die, and to

  1392. die.

  1393. Why?

  1394. Because of their

  1395. rebellion against

  1396. God.

  1397. Did they deserve to

  1398. be judged?

  1399. Yes, of course.

  1400. But God provided a

  1401. means that they might

  1402. be saved, and Jonathan

  1403. talked about that

  1404. last week.

  1405. What a beautiful

  1406. picture of looking

  1407. on this provision of

1408. God in order to be

  1409. saved.

1410. And we know that we

1411. need to look on the

  1412. provision of God, that

  1413. is Jesus Christ, in

1414. order that we might be

  1415. saved.

  1416. But it says this,

  1417. who can be saved?

  1418. And whosoever

  1419. believes, whoever

  1420. believes, whosoever

  1421. from any nation,

  1422. whosoever believes.

1423. You know, we see it

1424. in verse 18 as well,

  1425. and 16.

1426. So in 16, for God so

  1427. loved the world that

1428. he sent his only son,

1429. he loved him in that

1430. way that he would send

1431. his son to die, his

  1432. provision.

  1433. That whosoever believes

  1434. in him should not

  1435. perish, but have

  1436. eternal life.

1437. And we see it again in

  1438. 18.

  1439. Whoever believes in

  1440. him is not condemned.

  1441. So what is salvation?

1442. What is the means by

  1443. which we would be

  1444. saved?

1445. How is it that I can

1446. come to a place where

  1447. I am saved?

1448. It's this, is it to

  1449. believe on him?

  1450. To believe that apart

1451. from him I have no

  1452. hope?

1453. To recognize my sin and

1454. my need of a savior, my

  1455. need of forgiveness, my

  1456. need of cleansing.

  1457. whoever believes is not

  1458. condemned.

  1459. Church, and those of

  1460. y'all who might be

  1461. visiting this morning,

  1462. have you believed?

  1463. Have you believed that

1464. Christ alone is our only

  1465. hope?

  1466. Have you recognized, like

  1467. he would say to

  1468. Nicodemus, Nicodemus, do

  1469. you see that you're

  1470. actually sinful?

  1471. Do you recognize that

  1472. all these efforts that

  1473. you've put into this

  1474. religion don't merit

  1475. anything?

  1476. Paul recognized it.

1477. He said all that stuff

  1478. is garbage.

1479. You know what tends to

1480. happen for you and I?

1481. Is that we tend to lean

  1482. on something else besides

  1483. Jesus.

1484. We tend to think because

  1485. our goodness, because of

  1486. our attendance, because of

  1487. our family, because of

  1488. whatever, that that is

  1489. enough.

1490. That God would not dare

  1491. not let us in.

1492. Look how good we are.

1493. Look at all these things

  1494. we've done.

  1495. You know that Nicodemus

  1496. couldn't have done a

  1497. single thing that would

  1498. have earned him salvation

  1499. and neither can we.

1500. Apart from looking on the

  1501. provision of God, apart

  1502. from looking at the

  1503. Messiah elevated on a

  1504. cross and recognizing

  1505. that that sacrifice God

  1506. accepted as a substitute

1507. for our sin, as payment

1508. for our sin, our condition

  1509. of sinfulness was paid

  1510. for.

1511. That is what it isolated

1512. and separated us from a

  1513. holy God.

1514. But God sent his provision

1515. in order that we might be

1516. saved if we would only do

  1517. what?

  1518. Whoever believes.

  1519. Have we believed?

1520. You know the invitation is

  1521. for everyone worldwide?

  1522. Whoever believes,

  1523. whatever nationality, whatever

  1524. background, whatever level of

1525. sin, whatever things you've done

1526. in your life, if you will look on

1527. the Messiah, though you've been

1528. bitten and you will believe on him

1529. and you will cast yourself into his

1530. hands for his mercy, we will be

  1531. saved.

1532. The invitation is for all of us.

1533. And if there's someone here

1534. who right now in your heart

  1535. you're saying, you know,

1536. I truly never have actually

  1537. stepped toward God.

  1538. I've never truly entrusted

  1539. myself to him.

  1540. I've never truly understood

1541. that it's Jesus and Jesus alone.

1542. You know the invitation is for you

  1543. this morning?

1544. God will forgive you on the basis

1545. of the sacrifice of his son,

  1546. Jesus Christ.

1547. His death, his perfect life,

  1548. his death, the burial,

1549. and the evidence of God's

  1550. acceptance by his resurrection

  1551. and ascension.

1552. That God would forgive you.

1553. He would take the righteousness

  1554. of Christ.

1555. This is a beautiful picture that

1556. Jonathan reminded us of last week

  1557. in Corinthians.

1558. that he would take our sins

1559. and he would put our sins

1560. on the back of Christ.

1561. And Christ would carry them

1562. to the cross for us.

  1563. Our sins on Christ.

1564. And in exchange he would give us

  1565. his righteousness.

1566. So when God looks at those

  1567. who trust in him,

1568. who trust in the son,

1569. you know what he sees?

1570. He sees the pure and spotless

1571. blood of the lamb covering us.

  1572. Cleansing us.

1573. You know there's no other way

1574. to be cleansed except through

1575. the powerful blood of Christ.

  1576. The invitation is here

1577. and the fifth point is the response.

1578. What will your response be?

1579. When you hear this truth,

  1580. how do you respond?

1581. You know I think many of us

  1582. have already understood this.

1583. Many of us have already

1584. asked God to forgive us

1585. and asked God to accept us

1586. as his son and daughter.

1587. Ask God to be our Lord.

  1588. We've changed.

1589. We've begun to serve him.

  1590. Not perfectly,

1591. but our heart is there.

1592. Our heart desires to honor God

1593. and desires to seek God,

  1594. desires to serve God.

1595. What will your response be?

  1596. How about Nicodemus?

1597. We had talked about this once before.

1598. Do we see any evidence

1599. in the life of Nicodemus

1600. after this encounter with Christ

  1601. that he's a changed man?

1602. You know the text says this.

1603. Whoever does what is true

  1604. comes to the light.

1605. So that it may be clearly seen

  1606. that his works

1607. have been carried out in God.

  1608. You know what?

  1609. We see something

1610. carried out in the life of Nicodemus.

  1611. His works.

1612. This display laid in the Gospels.

  1613. You know the Gospels

1614. didn't have to tell us this.

1615. It didn't have to tell us

  1616. that Nicodemus went

  1617. with Joseph of Arimathea

1618. to anoint the body of Christ.

  1619. His work,

1620. his willingness to step outside

1621. of the will of the Sanhedrin

1622. and to go and anoint

  1623. the body of Christ

  1624. is evidence,

  1625. at least I believe,

  1626. that he was changed.

1627. That we begin to see works

1628. that were different than before.

1629. That there's this changed life.

1630. You know that when we turn to God,

1631. God does something special to us.

1632. He gives us a new heart.

  1633. Ezekiel says this,

1634. And I will give you a new heart

1635. and a new spirit I will put into you.

1636. I will remove the heart of stone

  1637. from your flesh

1638. and give you a heart

  1639. that desires me.

  1640. Let's pray.

  1641. Father, I thank you

1642. that you would open our eyes

  1643. to see our sin

  1644. and our condition.

1645. That apart from the provision

  1646. of your Son

  1647. to fulfill your plan

1648. that is the salvation of many,

1649. that we would have no hope.

1650. God, thank you that you've opened

  1651. many of our eyes

1652. and I hope all of our eyes.

1653. God, we've come to see

1654. that we're separated from you

  1655. because of our rebellion,

1656. because living for our own ways

1657. and not living for you.

1658. Father, you're holy in every way

1659. and it's right that we would serve you

1660. and that we would bow our knee to you

1661. and we would honor you

  1662. with our whole life,

1663. that we would present our bodies

  1664. and our life

1665. as a living sacrifice to you,

1666. which is right and proper,

  1667. considering that,

  1668. Father, you've given us

  1669. a gift that's so great

1670. that we can't even understand.

1671. Not only do you accept us

  1672. as your child,

1673. but you provide for us glory.

1674. That we will be able

1675. to spend eternity with you.

  1676. We will be able

1677. to have perfect fellowship with you.

  1678. Father, our salvation

  1679. is just the beginning

  1680. of this amazing depth

  1681. of relationship with you

1682. that you've simply gifted to us,

1683. those of us who will bow our knee,

1684. those of us who will recognize our need,

1685. those of us who will cry out to you.

  1686. And Father, I ask,

  1687. even this morning,

  1688. if there's somebody here

  1689. that is not yours,

1690. that has not bowed their knee,

1691. that has not accepted you

  1692. as Lord and Savior,

1693. that has not called out to you,

1694. Father, move in their heart this morning

1695. to give them a desire

1696. to call out to you.

1697. And I know who you are, God,

  1698. that you're a God of grace

  1699. and you always respond

1700. to those who lift their hands up

1701. to you and say, help me.

1702. So God, do what you will.

1703. We praise you in Christ's name.

  1704. Amen.
