  1. Please open up your Bibles this morning to the book of John, and we will be in chapter 4 this morning.

  2. We're going to read the story of the woman of Samaria.

  3. So it's going to be John chapter 4, verse 1, all the way through verse 42.

    John 4:1

  4. If you would, follow with me as I read.

  5. Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John,

  6. although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples,

  7. he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

  8. And he had to pass through Samaria.

  9. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  10. Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well.

  11. It was about the sixth hour.

  12. A woman from Samaria came to draw water.

  13. Jesus said to her,

  14. Give me a drink.

  15. For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

  16. The Samaritan woman said to him,

  17. How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?

  18. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  19. Jesus answered her,

  20. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, give me a drink,

  21. you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.

  22. The woman said to him,

  23. Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep.

  24. Where do you get that living water?

  25. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  26. He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.

  27. Jesus said to her,

  28. Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again.

  29. But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.

  30. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

  31. The woman said to him,

  32. Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.

  33. Jesus said to her,

  34. Go, call your husband and come here.

  35. The woman answered him,

  36. I have no husband.

  37. Jesus said to her,

  38. You are right in saying,

  39. I have no husband.

  40. For you have had five husbands,

  41. and the one you now have is not your husband.

  42. What you have said is true.

  43. The woman said to him,

  44. Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

  45. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,

  46. but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.

  47. Jesus said to her,

  48. Woman, believe me,

  49. the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

  50. You worship what you do not know.

  51. We worship what we know.

  52. For salvation is from the Jews.

  53. But the hour is coming and is now here

  54. when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.

  55. For the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.

  56. God is spirit.

  57. And those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

  58. The woman said to Him,

  59. I know that Messiah is coming,

  60. He who is called Christ.

  61. When He comes, He will tell us all things.

  62. Jesus said to her,

  63. I who speak to you am He.

  64. Just then His disciples came back.

  65. They marveled that He was talking with a woman,

  66. but no one said,

  67. What do you seek?

  68. Or why are you talking with her?

  69. So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,

  70. Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did.

  71. Can this be the Christ?

  72. They went out of the town and were coming to Him.

  73. Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Him, saying,

  74. Rabbi, eat.

  75. But He said to them,

  76. I have food to eat that you do not know about.

  77. So the disciples said to one another,

  78. Has anyone brought Him something to eat?

  79. Jesus said to them,

  80. My food is to do the will of Him who sent me,

  81. and to accomplish His work.

  82. Do you not say,

  83. There are yet four months,

  84. then comes the harvest?

  85. Look, I tell you,

  86. Lift up your eyes and see

  87. that the fields are white for harvest.

  88. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages

  89. and gathering fruit for eternal life,

  90. so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

  91. For here the saying holds true,

  92. One sows and another reaps.

  93. I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor.

  94. Others have labored,

  95. and you have entered into their labor.

  96. Many Samaritans from that town believed in Him

  97. because of the woman's testimony.

  98. He told me all that I ever did.

  99. So when the Samaritans came to Him,

  100. they asked Him to stay with them,

  101. and He stayed there two days.

  102. And many more believed because of His word.

  103. They said to the woman,

  104. It is no longer because of what you said that we believe,

  105. for we have heard for ourselves,

  106. and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.

  107. This is God's word.

  108. Let's bow once more.

  109. Lord, what a beautiful story.

  110. Powerful.

  111. We pray now that you would open our eyes and ears to understand it,

  112. and to respond to it as you would desire us to.

  113. We pray in Christ's name.

  114. Amen.

  115. There are two crucial questions that everyone in the world ought to know the answer to.

  116. Who is Jesus?

  117. And what did He come into the world to do?

  118. Who is Jesus?

  119. And what did He come to do?

  120. Last week, we closed out chapter 3 with four ways that Jesus Christ is distinct from every other individual on the planet,

  121. every other man, every other religious figure.

  122. So we saw that Christ alone is distinct in His supremacy.

  123. He is distinct in sight and speech.

  124. He is distinct in His measure of the Spirit.

  125. He is distinct in His sonship.

  126. And all of this together, we saw that it tells us that this man, Jesus, is not another teacher.

  127. He is the Son of God in the flesh.

  128. As we see what we just read in the story with the Samaritan woman this morning,

  129. Jesus Christ is the Messiah.

  130. So last week, we saw very clearly who Jesus is.

  131. This morning, as we see this incredible encounter with the Messiah and this woman from Samaria,

  132. the sinful, rejected woman, we see why Jesus has come.

  133. Why Jesus has come.

  134. See, Jesus Christ is a man on a mission.

  135. He has come with purpose.

  136. Jesus Christ came to magnify the glory of God.

  137. This was His primary mission in coming to earth as the Messiah.

  138. His mission is our mission.

  139. So we're going to see this in five ways this morning.

  140. Five reasons the Messiah has come.

  141. This will be our outline this morning if you're taking notes.

  142. Five reasons the Messiah has come.

  143. First, Jesus Christ has come submitting to the plan of God.

  144. Jesus has come submitting to the plan of God.

  145. Look there to verse 1, chapter 4.

  146. It says,

  147. When Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that He was making and baptizing more disciples than John,

  148. although Jesus Himself did not baptize but only His disciples,

  149. He didn't stick around.

  150. He wasn't chasing after their approval or popularity or their influence.

  151. He didn't stick around.

  152. He was on a mission.

  153. Verse 3 says,

  154. He left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

  155. And what does it say?

  156. It says,

  157. He had to pass through Samaria.

  158. Now this phrase is very, very interesting.

  159. He had to pass through Samaria.

  160. Why?

  161. Of course, this was geographically the quickest route.

  162. I use maps on my phone anytime I want to go anywhere.

  163. I can't get anywhere without it.

  164. And always I click the quickest route available.

  165. I want to get there as soon as possible.

  166. Well, geographically, the quickest route from Judea in the south to Galilee in the north

  167. was a straight path that took you right through Samaria in the middle.

  168. And some took that path, the direct route.

  169. But you didn't have to.

  170. In fact, many Jews did not go the quickest route.

  171. If you were a strict Jew, they put into their maps the setting,

  172. Avoid All Samaritans.

  173. So they would go from the south.

  174. And instead of going straight up through Samaria,

  175. they would go around, cross over the Jordan River,

  176. avoid Samaria entirely,

  177. and take the long route up to Galilee.

  178. But it says here Jesus had to pass through Samaria.

  179. Why?

  180. Well, this was not a matter of geographic necessity.

  181. It was a matter of divine necessity.

  182. Providential necessity.

  183. This same word here is the same thing John said just a few verses earlier last week.

  184. He must increase.

  185. I must decrease.

  186. It's the same word that Jesus used when he told Nicodemus,

  187. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  188. so must the Son of Man be lifted up.

  189. It must happen.

  190. It is necessary.

  191. John chapter 20, verse 9, it says,

    John 20:9

  192. As of yet, the disciples did not understand the Scriptures,

  193. that the Son of Man, that he must rise from the dead.

  194. In other words, God had a plan,

  195. and Jesus, being the perfect, obedient Son,

  196. gladly submits to the plan.

  197. He had to pass through Samaria,

  198. because God in his wisdom had ordained that Jesus go,

  199. so that he might grow weary,

  200. sit down at a well,

  201. be thirsty,

  202. so that a woman might come at just the right time in the day,

  203. just the right time in her life,

  204. so that this providential conversation might happen,

  205. might take place,

  206. so that through this conversation,

  207. this woman might be changed,

  208. so that through her transformation,

  209. she might bear witness in Samaria,

  210. so that so many in Samaria might believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

  211. See, there are no accidents in God's plan of redemption.

  212. There are no coincidences in God's plan of redemption.

  213. Every detail down to every step that Jesus took was all part of the plan,

  214. and it delighted Jesus to fulfill it perfectly.

  215. This is what he says down in verse 32 to his disciples, isn't it?

  216. Look there.

  217. He says to his disciples,

  218. I have food to eat that you don't know about.

  219. What was his food?

  220. What sustained Jesus?

  221. What gave him nourishment?

  222. What kept him going?

  223. What was his primary concern?

  224. It's not physical sustenance,

  225. but the sustaining,

  226. strengthening food of obedience to the will of God.

  227. My food is to do the will of him who sent me,

  228. and to accomplish his work.

  229. I have heard legend,

  230. maybe you have too,

  231. of some people being so focused on their job,

  232. on a task at hand,

  233. that they just work right through lunch.

  234. I don't know anything about that myself,

  235. but some people I've heard,

  236. they don't even think about stopping to eat food.

  237. Why?

  238. Because they're so zeroed in on the task at hand.

  239. They're so focused,

  240. so motivated.

  241. That task is what's sustaining them.

  242. Well, for Jesus,

  243. this was all the time.

  244. Of course,

  245. he got hungry.

  246. He ate.

  247. Of course,

  248. he got thirsty.

  249. He drank.

  250. He slept.

  251. He had physical need,

  252. but what kept him going,

  253. was obedience to the plan of God the Father.

  254. This is what he craved.

  255. This is what he hungered and thirsted for.

  256. I just want an ounce of that zeal,

  257. that hunger for obedience,

  258. don't you?

  259. Well,

  260. what was that work that Christ was committed to do?

  261. It was to come,

  262. to live,

  263. and to die,

  264. and to rise for sinners.

  265. This is our second point this morning.

  266. Second,

  267. Jesus has come seeking and saving the lost.

  268. Jesus has come seeking and saving the lost.

  269. Verse 5 says,

  270. Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar,

  271. near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  272. Jacob's well was there,

  273. so Jesus,

  274. wearied as he was from his journey,

  275. was sitting beside the well.

  276. It was about the sixth hour,

  277. which is 12 in the afternoon.

  278. This is the hottest part of the day,

  279. and Jesus,

  280. fully God,

  281. yet fully man,

  282. in a picture of his full humanity,

  283. he was tired.

  284. He was worn out.

  285. He had just traveled a long journey.

  286. He was weak.

  287. 12 o'clock was not a time when most people were coming out to the well.

  288. Most of the time,

  289. the women,

  290. they would come early in the morning,

  291. before the sun got too high,

  292. before it got too hot.

  293. Most of the time,

  294. they came out in groups,

  295. rarely alone.

  296. But here in God's providence,

  297. again,

  298. Jesus just so happens to sit down at the well,

  299. to be waiting there,

  300. when a woman from Samaria came,

  301. to drink water.

  302. Jesus said to her,

  303. give me a drink,

  304. for his disciples,

  305. they had gone off into the city,

  306. to buy some food.

  307. Now,

  308. I wish I could have been there,

  309. to see the look on this woman's face.

  310. And look how she responds.

  311. In verse 9,

  312. it says,

  313. the Samaritan woman said to him,

  314. how is it that you,

  315. a Jew,

  316. would ask me for a drink of water?

  317. A woman,

  318. of Samaria.

  319. She was shocked,

  320. because she had three things working against her,

  321. here,

  322. socially,

  323. in this situation.

  324. Three things.

  325. For one,

  326. she was a woman.

  327. Culturally,

  328. this put her in a lower social class than Jesus.

  329. A male,

  330. it would not be normal for him to approach her in this way.

  331. But not only that,

  332. second,

  333. she was a Samaritan woman.

  334. A Samaritan woman.

  335. The Jews hated the Samaritans.

  336. This hatred,

  337. it goes back all the way to the divided kingdom of Israel in the Old Testament.

  338. The southern kingdom had Jerusalem as their capital.

  339. The northern kingdom took Samaria as their capital.

  340. Well,

  341. in 722,

  342. the Assyrians,

  343. they overtook the northern kingdom.

  344. They took most of the Jews out.

  345. They filled the city up with a bunch of pagans.

  346. And what happened was that these two groups eventually began to mix.

  347. They mixed their religious practices.

  348. They intermarried.

  349. They had children.

  350. And those people eventually became the Samaritans.

  351. These people were hated by the Jews.

  352. They weren't really well received by the Gentiles either.

  353. They were just generally despised.

  354. The Jews,

  355. they saw the Samaritans as dirty.

  356. Half-breeds.

  357. They saw them as perpetually,

  358. constantly unclean.

  359. This is why she says Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  360. Why?

  361. Because they wouldn't even share a dish for fear

  362. that touching an object

  363. might make them unclean.

  364. But not just this.

  365. Third,

  366. she was deeply,

  367. deeply sinful.

  368. And she knew it.

  369. Here she is,

  370. coming to the well alone

  371. at the hottest part of the day.

  372. Why?

  373. Five husbands.

  374. One she's living with

  375. is not her husband.

  376. She had been ostracized

  377. from her own community.

  378. She carried her shame

  379. and her guilt

  380. everywhere she went.

  381. She was hated by Jews,

  382. hated by Gentiles,

  383. hated by Samaritans.

  384. And in her mind,

  385. I'm sure she's thinking,

  386. if this man only knew who I was,

  387. he wouldn't be caught dead

  388. with me here,

  389. asking me

  390. for a drink of water.

  391. But here was Jesus

  392. reaching out to her,

  393. initiating to her,

  394. asking her to take on the role

  395. of one of his disciples,

  396. asking her to serve him

  397. with her own water pot.

  398. Not afraid of her uncleanness,

  399. not ashamed,

  400. not bothered by her social status,

  401. not afraid of her sexual history.

  402. Why would he do this?

  403. Because this is exactly

  404. why he's come.

  405. Jesus did not come

  406. to seek out the very best,

  407. the most impressive,

  408. the most self-righteous,

  409. the most religious.

  410. Jesus came to seek

  411. and to save the lost.

  412. I heard a story this week

  413. about a man named Joshua

  414. who moved to Hollywood

  415. to become an actor.

  416. He had aspirations

  417. to become an actor,

  418. but he had a hard time

  419. finding reliable work

  420. and he had to pay the bills.

  421. And so through a series

  422. of terrible decisions,

  423. he wound up entering

  424. into the adult acting industry

  425. for the sake of the children

  426. in the room.

  427. And he was very successful.

  428. He made a lot of money.

  429. He won awards,

  430. but according to his testimony,

  431. he will tell you

  432. all of his success.

  433. It only served

  434. to illuminate his brokenness

  435. because at the end of the day,

  436. none of it satisfied him.

  437. And so in God's providence,

  438. he quit.

  439. And in God's providence,

  440. he met a girl

  441. that he was interested in dating.

  442. And so he asked her out

  443. and he took the risky step

  444. of explaining to her

  445. and telling her

  446. all about his history.

  447. Here's what happened.

  448. She began to share

  449. the gospel with him.

  450. She wasn't afraid

  451. of his sinfulness,

  452. wasn't afraid

  453. of his history.

  454. She saw a providential

  455. opportunity of God

  456. to share the love of Christ.

  457. She took him to church.

  458. He heard the gospel

  459. clearly explained

  460. and he gave his life to Christ.

  461. The Lord saved him.

  462. They wound up getting married

  463. and now he serves

  464. as a pastor in Iowa

  465. and giving his life

  466. to spread the good news

  467. of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  468. Don't tell me

  469. that anyone you know

  470. is hopeless.

  471. Too far gone

  472. for the grace of God.

  473. The gospel is the power of God

  474. for salvation

  475. to any who believe.

  476. Any who believe.

  477. And Jesus Christ

  478. did not come

  479. to seek out

  480. the most impressive,

  481. put together people

  482. of the world

  483. and praise God.

  484. Right?

  485. Praise God.

  486. We are not Christians

  487. because we have it all together.

  488. We are Christians

  489. because by the grace of God,

  490. Christ Jesus came

  491. to seek

  492. and to save

  493. the lost.

  494. There is no one,

  495. no matter how sinful,

  496. no matter how far gone,

  497. who can out-sin

  498. the grace of God.

  499. God.

  500. I think that,

  501. in fact,

  502. this is why John,

  503. the author,

  504. pairs together

  505. this story

  506. of the Samaritan woman

  507. right next to the story

  508. of Nicodemus,

  509. don't you?

  510. You think about

  511. the contrast here.

  512. You could not imagine

  513. two more different people

  514. than Nicodemus

  515. and this woman

  516. from Samaria.

  517. Nicodemus was

  518. a Jewish man,

  519. well-educated,

  520. well-respected,

  521. well-liked,

  522. intelligent,

  523. a teacher of Israel,

  524. a member of the Sanhedrin,

  525. a child of Abraham,

  526. and here is this

  527. Samaritan woman,

  528. we don't even know her name.

  529. Sinful,

  530. hated,

  531. sexually immoral,

  532. ostracized,

  533. rejected,

  534. unworthy.

  535. Here's the lesson.

  536. I want you to get this.

  537. If Nicodemus

  538. can't earn

  539. eternal life

  540. despite his knowledge,

  541. despite his heritage,

  542. then no one can.

  543. But if this Samaritan woman

  544. can receive

  545. eternal life

  546. despite her sinfulness,

  547. despite her brokenness,

  548. despite her past,

  549. anyone can,

  550. church.

  551. This is why

  552. Christ has come

  553. to seek out the lost

  554. and third,

  555. to satisfy

  556. the thirsty soul.

  557. Christ has come

  558. to satisfy

  559. the thirsty

  560. soul.

  561. Jesus answered her,

  562. verse 10,

  563. if you knew the gift of God

  564. and who it is

  565. that's saying to you,

  566. give me a drink,

  567. then you would have asked him

  568. and he would have given you

  569. living water.

  570. If you knew who I was

  571. and if you knew

  572. what I came to do,

  573. you would ask me

  574. and I would give you

  575. living water.

  576. Well, she and Nicodemus

  577. did have one thing

  578. in common,

  579. didn't they?

  580. They both responded

  581. to Jesus

  582. with physical understanding.

  583. Look what she says.

  584. She says,

  585. Sir, you have nothing

  586. to draw water with

  587. and this well is deep.

  588. Where do you get

  589. that living water?

  590. Are you greater

  591. than Jacob?

  592. He gave us this well.

  593. He drank from it.

  594. His sons drank from it.

  595. In fact,

  596. it had been there

  597. for over a thousand years.

  598. But Jesus pressed in further.

  599. He said to her,

  600. For everyone who drinks

  601. of this water

  602. will be thirsty again,

  603. but whoever drinks

  604. of the water

  605. that I will give him

  606. will never be thirsty again.

  607. The water that I will give him

  608. will become in him

  609. a spring of water

  610. welling up

  611. to eternal life.

  612. What is he saying here?

  613. Well, Jesus,

  614. as he often does,

  615. he's making a spiritual lesson

  616. out of a physical example.

  617. Water satisfies.

  618. Water gives life.

  619. You know what it's like

  620. to be thirsty

  621. at a hard day's work

  622. out in the sun.

  623. Your face is dripping sweat.

  624. You're exhausted.

  625. And you come inside

  626. and you get a cold glass of water.

  627. What does that do for you?

  628. It satisfies.

  629. It gives you life.

  630. But Jesus says here,

  631. even the best water

  632. will run out.

  633. And even,

  634. no matter how much

  635. you drink of it,

  636. you will be thirsty again.

  637. He's making a spiritual application

  638. here for this woman

  639. and for us.

  640. So often throughout

  641. the scriptures,

  642. water, thirst, dryness,

  643. hunger, drought, famine,

  644. they are interconnected.

  645. They point us.

  646. They're indicators.

  647. They represent spiritual lack.

  648. Spiritual thirst,

  649. spiritual hunger,

  650. spiritual drought,

  651. spiritual dryness.

  652. Here is this woman

  653. who has tried

  654. and tried

  655. and tried

  656. and tried

  657. to satisfy herself

  658. with sexual pleasure.

  659. Six men and counting.

  660. But Jesus says,

  661. you will be thirsty again.

  662. Why?

  663. Because your soul

  664. was made

  665. to be satisfied

  666. in God.

  667. Not these trifles.

  668. We often think

  669. that more money

  670. will satisfy us,

  671. more health,

  672. a healthier body,

  673. more me time

  674. will satisfy us.

  675. Maybe like this woman,

  676. we think more sexual satisfaction

  677. will satisfy us.

  678. but we will be thirsty again.

  679. Nothing can satisfy

  680. the desires of our soul

  681. except that for which

  682. we were made

  683. to delight ourselves

  684. in the living water

  685. that Jesus Christ alone

  686. can offer.

  687. What is this water?

  688. What is this water?

  689. Well,

  690. it's the soul-satisfying gift

  691. of the Holy Spirit.

  692. The soul-satisfying gift

  693. of the Holy Spirit.

  694. John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  695. you don't have to turn there now,

  696. mark this down

  697. for later.

  698. In John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  699. Jesus stood up

  700. at the feast of booths

  701. and he cried out,

  702. if anyone thirsts,

  703. let him come to me

  704. and drink.

  705. Whoever believes in me

  706. as the scriptures

  707. has said,

  708. out of his heart

  709. will flow rivers

  710. of living water.

  711. Does that sound familiar?

  712. Now he said this

  713. about the Spirit

  714. whom those who believed in him

  715. were to receive.

  716. The Holy Spirit

  717. is like water

  718. in the lives

  719. of believers.

  720. We need to understand

  721. the ministry

  722. of the Holy Spirit,

  723. don't we?

  724. The Holy Spirit

  725. is not some mystical,

  726. magical,

  727. mysterious force

  728. that just makes us emotional

  729. and does cool tricks

  730. and impresses us.

  731. The primary work

  732. of the Holy Spirit

  733. in the lives

  734. of believers

  735. is to give us life

  736. by satisfying

  737. our soul

  738. in Christ.

  739. Let's say that again.

  740. I want you to get it.

  741. The primary work

  742. of the Holy Spirit

  743. in the lives

  744. of believers

  745. is to satisfy

  746. our soul

  747. in Christ

  748. and in so doing

  749. to give us

  750. life.

  751. Eternal

  752. life.

  753. This is the ministry

  754. of the Spirit.

  755. The Holy Spirit

  756. is working in us

  757. to magnify

  758. the greatness

  759. of Jesus Christ.

  760. He's working in us

  761. to cause us

  762. to see His goodness

  763. more clearly,

  764. to cause sin

  765. to taste bitter,

  766. and to cause Christ

  767. to taste sweet

  768. to our souls.

  769. Sweeter

  770. and sweeter

  771. and sweeter

  772. and sweeter,

  773. welling up

  774. to eternal life

  775. when we enter in

  776. to the fullness

  777. of joy

  778. in the presence

  779. of God.

  780. And Jesus,

  781. here,

  782. He promises

  783. that Spirit

  784. to any

  785. who believes

  786. in Him.

  787. Any

  788. who would come

  789. to Him

  790. in faith.

  791. This is why

  792. He has

  793. come.

  794. Are you thirsty?

  795. I know

  796. that even

  797. in a room

  798. this size

  799. there are

  800. some here

  801. who are thirsty

  802. or spiritually

  803. dry

  804. this morning.

  805. I know

  806. that maybe

  807. some of you

  808. even know

  809. that you

  810. are seeking

  811. satisfaction

  812. other places

  813. besides the

  814. fount of

  815. living waters.

  816. Well,

  817. He says

  818. to the Samaritan

  819. woman and to

  820. us this morning,

  821. church,

  822. if you are

  823. tired of

  824. coming again

  825. and again

  826. and again

  827. and again

  828. to the same

  829. streams of water

  830. that promise

  831. satisfaction

  832. yet never

  833. deliver,

  834. simply come

  835. to Christ

  836. and ask

  837. and He

  838. will give

  839. you exactly

  840. what you

  841. need.

  842. He came

  843. to satisfy

  844. the thirsty

  845. soul.

  846. Why?

  847. In order

  848. that we

  849. might delight

  850. to worship

  851. Him.

  852. This is the

  853. fourth reason

  854. He has come.

  855. Fourth,

  856. Jesus has

  857. come securing

  858. true

  859. worship.

  860. Securing

  861. true

  862. worship.

  863. The Samaritan

  864. woman,

  865. she's no

  866. fool.

  867. She tries

  868. to throw

  869. Jesus off

  870. her trail,

  871. doesn't she?

  872. And change

  873. the subject

  874. away from

  875. her own

  876. personal

  877. history and

  878. instead to

  879. the most

  880. hotly debated

  881. theological

  882. topic that

  883. she could

  884. think of,

  885. which is

  886. the question

  887. of worship.

  888. See,

  889. the split

  890. between the

  891. two kingdoms

  892. of Israel,

  893. it resulted

  894. in a split

  895. of religious

  896. history and

  897. religious practice.

  898. So the

  899. Samaritans,

  900. again,

  901. in the north,

  902. they only

  903. accepted the

  904. first five

  905. books of

  906. the Bible.

  907. They rejected

  908. anything else.

  909. Essentially,

  910. they rejected

  911. anything that

  912. mentioned

  913. Jerusalem at

  914. all.

  915. And they

  916. established

  917. their own

  918. temple.

  919. Instead of

  920. the temple

  921. in Jerusalem,

  922. they established

  923. their own

  924. place of

  925. worship on

  926. Mount

  927. Gezerim.

  928. And as

  929. you can

  930. imagine,

  931. this was a

  932. major point

  933. of tension

  934. between these

  935. two people

  936. groups.

  937. And she

  938. would rather

  939. talk about

  940. that than

  941. anything to

  942. do with

  943. her own

  944. personal

  945. history.

  946. And so

  947. she says

  948. in verse

  949. 19,

  950. Sir,

  951. I perceive

  952. that you

  953. are a

  954. prophet.

  955. Our

  956. fathers

  957. worshipped

  958. on this

  959. mountain.

  960. But you

  961. say that

  962. Jerusalem

  963. is the

  964. place where

  965. people ought

  966. to worship.

  967. So,

  968. which is

  969. it?

  970. But look

  971. at what

  972. Jesus says,

  973. verse 21.

  974. Jesus said

  975. to her,

  976. Woman,

  977. believe me,

  978. the hour

  979. is coming

  980. when neither

  981. on this

  982. mountain nor

  983. in Jerusalem

  984. will you

  985. worship the

  986. Father.

  987. You worship

  988. what you do

  989. not know.

  990. We worship

  991. what we know

  992. for salvation

  993. is from the

  994. Jews.

  995. But the hour

  996. is coming

  997. and is

  998. now here

  999. when the

  1000. true

  1001. worshippers

  1002. will worship

  1003. the Father

  1004. in spirit

  1005. and in truth

  1006. for the

  1007. Father is

  1008. seeking such

  1009. people to

  1010. worship Him.

  1011. Jesus

  1012. doesn't

  1013. take the

  1014. bait.

  1015. He doesn't

  1016. engage in

  1017. this theological

  1018. discussion

  1019. of this

  1020. mountain

  1021. or that

  1022. mountain,

  1023. this tradition

  1024. or that

  1025. tradition.

  1026. Instead,

  1027. He says,

  1028. I have

  1029. come to

  1030. bring something

  1031. entirely

  1032. different.

  1033. I have

  1034. come to

  1035. usher in

  1036. the age

  1037. of true

  1038. worship

  1039. for the

  1040. glory

  1041. of God.

  1042. That time

  1043. is coming

  1044. and is

  1045. now

  1046. here.

  1047. a time

  1048. when

  1049. worship

  1050. will no

  1051. longer

  1052. be

  1053. connected

  1054. to a

  1055. specific

  1056. place

  1057. but rather

  1058. to a

  1059. person.

  1060. See,

  1061. there is

  1062. no

  1063. Christian

  1064. Mecca.

  1065. We know

  1066. Muslims,

  1067. millions and

  1068. millions of

  1069. Muslims make

  1070. their pilgrimage

  1071. every year

  1072. in July

  1073. to perform

  1074. the Hajj

  1075. in Mecca.

  1076. The Koran,

  1077. it commands

  1078. it that every

  1079. capable adult,

  1080. every healthy

  1081. Muslim who is

  1082. financially and

  1083. physically capable,

  1084. they must

  1085. travel to

  1086. Mecca to

  1087. perform the

  1088. Hajj at

  1089. least once

  1090. in their

  1091. lifetime because

  1092. to them,

  1093. this place,

  1094. this physical

  1095. location is

  1096. holy,

  1097. this time of

  1098. year is

  1099. holy,

  1100. this physical

  1101. area is

  1102. holy,

  1103. but Christianity

  1104. has no

  1105. holy place.

  1106. Some of you,

  1107. I know,

  1108. have traveled

  1109. to Israel

  1110. and gone to

  1111. see some

  1112. of the very

  1113. places that

  1114. we're reading

  1115. about here

  1116. in Scripture.

  1117. I hope to

  1118. go someday

  1119. myself.

  1120. I think that

  1121. that would

  1122. be fascinating,

  1123. but not

  1124. to get

  1125. closer to

  1126. God.

  1127. Church,

  1128. we live

  1129. in an

  1130. incredible

  1131. time.

  1132. We live

  1133. in the

  1134. age of

  1135. the church,

  1136. the age

  1137. of physically

  1138. unbound,

  1139. unrestricted

  1140. worship.

  1141. We live

  1142. in the age

  1143. of the

  1144. Holy Spirit.

  1145. And the

  1146. Spirit of

  1147. God is

  1148. what makes

  1149. God-honoring

  1150. worship

  1151. possible,

  1152. not a

  1153. place.

  1154. And that

  1155. Spirit,

  1156. because of

  1157. what Christ

  1158. has come

  1159. to do,

  1160. does not

  1161. dwell in

  1162. any one

  1163. place.

  1164. Church,

  1165. He dwells

  1166. in us.

  1167. If the

  1168. Spirit of

  1169. Christ is

  1170. in us,

  1171. then there

  1172. is no

  1173. place on

  1174. earth that

  1175. we can

  1176. go to

  1177. be closer

  1178. to God

  1179. than where

  1180. you are

  1181. right now,

  1182. here,

  1183. in

  1184. Allendall,

  1185. South Carolina,

  1186. wherever you

  1187. might be

  1188. tomorrow,

  1189. if the

  1190. Spirit is

  1191. in you,

  1192. He is

  1193. what makes

  1194. true worship

  1195. possible.

  1196. We live

  1197. in the

  1198. age of

  1199. Spirit-empowered,

  1200. God-glorifying

  1201. worship for

  1202. the entire

  1203. world.

  1204. Just think

  1205. about how

  1206. this magnifies

  1207. God's glory.

  1208. How this

  1209. magnifies

  1210. His glory.

  1211. The Holy

  1212. Spirit,

  1213. He exponentially

  1214. increases the

  1215. glory and the

  1216. honor that is

  1217. given to God.

  1218. True worship

  1219. is no longer

  1220. limited to

  1221. one geographic

  1222. region of the

  1223. world or

  1224. another.

  1225. It's no longer

  1226. limited to one

  1227. particular people

  1228. group or

  1229. another.

  1230. It's no longer

  1231. mediated by one

  1232. class of people.

  1233. Christ has

  1234. come that

  1235. God's glory

  1236. might be

  1237. known and

  1238. exalted by

  1239. anyone,

  1240. anywhere,

  1241. in any

  1242. place,

  1243. from Allendall

  1244. to Kenya,

  1245. to Jordan,

  1246. to the

  1247. uttermost

  1248. ends of

  1249. the earth,

  1250. so long

  1251. as they

  1252. worship in

  1253. Spirit and

  1254. in truth.

  1255. Two very

  1256. important qualifiers

  1257. He gives us,

  1258. aren't they?

  1259. For true

  1260. worship in

  1261. Spirit and

  1262. in truth.

  1263. True

  1264. worshipers must

  1265. worship in

  1266. Spirit and

  1267. in truth.

  1268. He says,

  1269. God is

  1270. Spirit and

  1271. those who

  1272. worship Him

  1273. must worship

  1274. in Spirit

  1275. and in

  1276. truth.

  1277. And one of

  1278. the most

  1279. American

  1280. individualistic

  1281. lies that we

  1282. tend to

  1283. believe is

  1284. that we can

  1285. worship however

  1286. we see fit.

  1287. Whatever

  1288. makes us

  1289. feel good,

  1290. whatever our

  1291. preferences are,

  1292. whatever moves

  1293. me, as long as

  1294. it moves me,

  1295. then that's

  1296. what I can

  1297. do.

  1298. That is

  1299. simply not

  1300. true.

  1301. We must

  1302. worship in

  1303. Spirit and

  1304. in truth.

  1305. In Spirit,

  1306. that is

  1307. internal,

  1308. not external,

  1309. not a matter

  1310. of religious

  1311. practice,

  1312. not a matter

  1313. of external

  1314. behavior,

  1315. but a matter

  1316. of your

  1317. inner spirit,

  1318. yourself,

  1319. your inner

  1320. self.

  1321. You all know

  1322. how easy it

  1323. is to worship

  1324. externally only,

  1325. but nothing

  1326. you do on

  1327. the outside

  1328. can honor

  1329. the Lord

  1330. if your

  1331. spirit is

  1332. not engaged

  1333. in worship.

  1334. Charles Spurgeon,

  1335. the great

  1336. preacher,

  1337. he once said,

  1338. God does

  1339. not regard

  1340. our voices,

  1341. he hears

  1342. our hearts,

  1343. and if our

  1344. hearts do

  1345. not sing,

  1346. we have not

  1347. sung at all.

  1348. We want to

  1349. worship,

  1350. we want our

  1351. hearts to

  1352. sing,

  1353. not just

  1354. our lips,

  1355. but doesn't

  1356. it matter

  1357. who we

  1358. sing to?

  1359. Doesn't it

  1360. matter what

  1361. we sing

  1362. about,

  1363. what we

  1364. proclaim

  1365. about the

  1366. God that

  1367. we worship?

  1368. Of course

  1369. it does,

  1370. which is

  1371. why we

  1372. must also

  1373. worship

  1374. in truth.

  1375. How could

  1376. we worship

  1377. a God

  1378. that we

  1379. know nothing

  1380. about?

  1381. Any

  1382. worship

  1383. that would

  1384. please God,

  1385. it must

  1386. spring out

  1387. of the

  1388. truth of

  1389. what he

  1390. has revealed

  1391. in his

  1392. perfect

  1393. word?

  1394. The

  1395. true

  1396. worship,

  1397. it requires

  1398. true

  1399. knowledge

  1400. about the

  1401. truth of

  1402. God.

  1403. It is

  1404. truth that

  1405. cannot be

  1406. learned any

  1407. other way

  1408. than by the

  1409. word of

  1410. God.

  1411. We must

  1412. worship

  1413. according to

  1414. his

  1415. word.

  1416. How then

  1417. will the

  1418. nations hear

  1419. the truth?

  1420. How then

  1421. will the

  1422. unreached

  1423. peoples of

  1424. India and

  1425. Afghanistan,

  1426. even those

  1427. here in

  1428. Allendal and

  1429. Mount Pleasant

  1430. and our

  1431. community,

  1432. how will

  1433. they know

  1434. the truth

  1435. of God's

  1436. word that

  1437. they too

  1438. might worship

  1439. him?

  1440. Church,

  1441. they must

  1442. hear it

  1443. from us.

  1444. They must

  1445. hear it

  1446. from us.

  1447. Fifth,

  1448. and finally,

  1449. Jesus Christ

  1450. has come

  1451. sending

  1452. his

  1453. disciples

  1454. to sow

  1455. and to

  1456. reap.

  1457. Jesus has

  1458. come sending

  1459. his

  1460. disciples to

  1461. sow

  1462. and to

  1463. reap.

  1464. One of the

  1465. most amazing

  1466. truths of

  1467. the gospel

  1468. is that we

  1469. who have

  1470. believed it

  1471. now get to

  1472. experience the

  1473. joy of

  1474. spreading it.

  1475. This message

  1476. of life and

  1477. hope and

  1478. satisfaction is

  1479. spread by the

  1480. lips of his

  1481. disciples.

  1482. We are

  1483. commissioned as

  1484. disciples of

  1485. Christ to

  1486. go and to

  1487. follow the

  1488. example of

  1489. our master.

  1490. Have you

  1491. noticed over

  1492. the past

  1493. several weeks

  1494. how we have

  1495. seen Jesus

  1496. go from

  1497. Jerusalem

  1498. now to

  1499. Judea and

  1500. now to

  1501. Samaria and

  1502. in the coming

  1503. weeks to

  1504. the Gentiles?

  1505. Does that

  1506. sound familiar

  1507. to you?

  1508. In that

  1509. same way he

  1510. has sent

  1511. his disciples

  1512. you will

  1513. receive power

  1514. when the

  1515. Holy Spirit

  1516. has come

  1517. upon you

  1518. and you

  1519. will be my

  1520. witnesses in

  1521. Jerusalem and

  1522. Judea and

  1523. Samaria and

  1524. to the ends

  1525. of the earth.

  1526. You see that

  1527. call the

  1528. missions of

  1529. Christ it was

  1530. not just for

  1531. these disciples

  1532. but for any

  1533. and all who

  1534. would claim to

  1535. be disciples of

  1536. Christ we

  1537. too must go

  1538. and share

  1539. the message

  1540. of salvation

  1541. in the name

  1542. of Jesus.

  1543. Two things

  1544. convinced this

  1545. woman of who

  1546. Jesus was.

  1547. Do you see

  1548. it?

  1549. For one it

  1550. was the

  1551. clear testimony

  1552. of Christ.

  1553. Look there to

  1554. verse 25.

  1555. This woman

  1556. clearly was

  1557. impressed even

  1558. curious about

  1559. who Jesus

  1560. might be.

  1561. We see in

  1562. verse 25 she

  1563. said to him

  1564. I know

  1565. that Messiah

  1566. is coming

  1567. he who is

  1568. called Christ

  1569. and when he

  1570. comes he

  1571. will tell us

  1572. all things

  1573. and here Jesus

  1574. does what he

  1575. rarely does.

  1576. He speaks

  1577. clearly and

  1578. directly to

  1579. this woman and

  1580. reveals in no

  1581. uncertain terms

  1582. who he is.

  1583. And I

  1584. who speak

  1585. to you

  1586. am he.

  1587. But you

  1588. know something

  1589. else added

  1590. to that

  1591. testimony.

  1592. Do you see

  1593. it?

  1594. Look there

  1595. to verse 27.

  1596. It says

  1597. just then his

  1598. disciples came

  1599. back.

  1600. They marveled

  1601. that he was

  1602. talking with a

  1603. woman although

  1604. they didn't

  1605. know the half

  1606. of it.

  1607. Right?

  1608. They didn't

  1609. know the half

  1610. of what was

  1611. going on.

  1612. But no one

  1613. said what do

  1614. you seek or

  1615. why are you

  1616. talking with

  1617. her?

  1618. No one

  1619. doubted the

  1620. integrity of

  1621. his master.

  1622. No one

  1623. questioned his

  1624. motives.

  1625. No one

  1626. criticized this

  1627. woman.

  1628. Maybe for the

  1629. first time in

  1630. her life.

  1631. No one

  1632. cast shame

  1633. upon her.

  1634. And it

  1635. was this

  1636. two-fold

  1637. testimony.

  1638. The words

  1639. of Christ

  1640. and the

  1641. trusting

  1642. obedience

  1643. of the

  1644. disciples

  1645. that had

  1646. her convinced.

  1647. She left

  1648. her water

  1649. jar, went

  1650. back into

  1651. the town,

  1652. back into

  1653. the crowd

  1654. of people

  1655. she once

  1656. avoided,

  1657. back into

  1658. the place

  1659. of her

  1660. shame,

  1661. and she

  1662. proclaimed

  1663. to any

  1664. and all

  1665. who would

  1666. listen,

  1667. come see

  1668. a man

  1669. who told

  1670. me all

  1671. that I

  1672. ever did.

  1673. Can this

  1674. be the

  1675. Christ?

  1676. You know,

  1677. so often

  1678. we think

  1679. that we

  1680. need more

  1681. training to

  1682. be an

  1683. effective

  1684. evangelist.

  1685. We're

  1686. intimidated by

  1687. the task of

  1688. evangelism.

  1689. We don't

  1690. think we

  1691. know enough.

  1692. I hope

  1693. that the

  1694. Samaritan

  1695. woman can

  1696. convince you

  1697. that that

  1698. is simply

  1699. not true.

  1700. We just

  1701. need to

  1702. be convinced

  1703. of the

  1704. message

  1705. and moved

  1706. by the

  1707. harvest.

  1708. The message

  1709. is simple.

  1710. The Messiah

  1711. has come.

  1712. Come.

  1713. Come see.

  1714. Come hear

  1715. his word.

  1716. Come drink

  1717. the waters

  1718. of everlasting

  1719. joy and

  1720. life.

  1721. We don't

  1722. need to be

  1723. experts.

  1724. We just

  1725. need to be

  1726. faithful.

  1727. Like the

  1728. woman from

  1729. Samaria.

  1730. She didn't

  1731. stick around

  1732. to learn

  1733. much more,

  1734. did she?

  1735. Right away.

  1736. She didn't

  1737. go to

  1738. seminary.

  1739. She didn't

  1740. read a

  1741. book.

  1742. She didn't

  1743. ask for

  1744. more knowledge.

  1745. Right away

  1746. she moved

  1747. to proclaim

  1748. the message

  1749. of the

  1750. gospel.

  1751. And as

  1752. the woman

  1753. left on

  1754. her way,

  1755. Jesus took

  1756. this opportunity

  1757. to teach

  1758. the disciples

  1759. a lesson.

  1760. He says,

  1761. Do you not

  1762. say there

  1763. are yet

  1764. four months

  1765. and then

  1766. comes the

  1767. harvest?

  1768. Look,

  1769. I tell you,

  1770. lift up your

  1771. eyes and

  1772. see that the

  1773. fields are

  1774. white.

  1775. for harvest.

  1776. Already the

  1777. one who

  1778. reaps is

  1779. receiving wages

  1780. and gathering

  1781. fruit for

  1782. eternal life

  1783. so that

  1784. sower and

  1785. reaper may

  1786. rejoice together.

  1787. For here the

  1788. saying holds

  1789. true,

  1790. one sows and

  1791. another reaps.

  1792. I sent you

  1793. to reap that

  1794. for which you

  1795. did not

  1796. labor.

  1797. Others have

  1798. labored and

  1799. you have

  1800. entered in

  1801. to their

  1802. labor.

  1803. Jesus is

  1804. telling the

  1805. disciples and

  1806. us that he

  1807. has come to

  1808. usher in the

  1809. age of the

  1810. harvest.

  1811. So many

  1812. have come

  1813. before us

  1814. to prepare

  1815. the way for

  1816. this time.

  1817. Prophets,

  1818. martyrs,

  1819. apostles,

  1820. sowing seed,

  1821. scattering seed,

  1822. but now in

  1823. the coming of

  1824. Christ, the

  1825. age of

  1826. reaping has

  1827. begun.

  1828. The age of

  1829. the harvest

  1830. has begun and

  1831. the harvest is

  1832. plentiful.

  1833. Church, we

  1834. have the

  1835. incredible

  1836. privilege of

  1837. being used

  1838. by God to

  1839. bring in the

  1840. harvest of

  1841. those who

  1842. would become

  1843. his disciples.

  1844. If only we

  1845. would go and

  1846. share the

  1847. news of the

  1848. gospel.

  1849. There are

  1850. men and

  1851. women all

  1852. around us

  1853. every day

  1854. who are

  1855. thirsty for

  1856. what only

  1857. Christ Jesus

  1858. can provide.

  1859. Do you

  1860. realize that

  1861. God has

  1862. appointed men

  1863. and women

  1864. to eternal

  1865. life all

  1866. around us?

  1867. If only we

  1868. would go and

  1869. open our

  1870. mouths and

  1871. proclaim the

  1872. message of

  1873. the gospel

  1874. that they

  1875. might hear

  1876. and believe

  1877. and become

  1878. his disciples.

  1879. The harvest

  1880. is plentiful,

  1881. but the

  1882. laborers are

  1883. few.

  1884. Church,

  1885. the mission

  1886. of Christ

  1887. is our

  1888. mission.

  1889. We follow

  1890. in his

  1891. footsteps.

  1892. He has

  1893. come submitting

  1894. to the

  1895. plan of

  1896. God,

  1897. so we

  1898. go submitting

  1899. to God's

  1900. plan for

  1901. the salvation

  1902. of those

  1903. in our

  1904. household,

  1905. for the

  1906. salvation of

  1907. those in

  1908. our community,

  1909. that we,

  1910. the church,

  1911. would go and

  1912. call them to

  1913. come and see

  1914. the man who

  1915. told me all I

  1916. ever did.

  1917. Come and see

  1918. the Messiah.

  1919. Come and see

  1920. the man who

  1921. has lived and

  1922. died and risen

  1923. for my salvation.

  1924. Christ has

  1925. come seeking

  1926. the lost,

  1927. so we go,

  1928. not caring

  1929. about physical

  1930. appearance,

  1931. external social

  1932. status,

  1933. sinfulness,

  1934. but scattering

  1935. the seed

  1936. faithfully and

  1937. broadly and

  1938. trusting the

  1939. Lord to bring

  1940. the growth.

  1941. Christ has

  1942. come satisfying

  1943. the thirsty

  1944. soul,

  1945. and so we

  1946. go proclaiming

  1947. that we have

  1948. tasted and

  1949. seen that the

  1950. Lord is good.

  1951. Come to the

  1952. waters.

  1953. Come and drink.

  1954. Come find

  1955. satisfaction for

  1956. your soul,

  1957. the soul that

  1958. was satisfied,

  1959. that was created

  1960. to be satisfied

  1961. in Christ.

  1962. He came

  1963. zealous to

  1964. restore worship

  1965. for the glory

  1966. of God.

  1967. So church,

  1968. we must go

  1969. with this one

  1970. ultimate mission

  1971. to magnify the

  1972. glory of God

  1973. in the gospel

  1974. of Jesus

  1975. Christ.

  1976. This was his

  1977. mission,

  1978. so church,

  1979. it must be

  1980. ours.

  1981. Here at the

  1982. close of this

  1983. story,

  1984. we see a

  1985. glimpse of

  1986. the harvest.

  1987. John says

  1988. in verse 29,

  1989. many Samaritans

  1990. from that town

  1991. believed in him

  1992. because of the

  1993. woman's testimony.

  1994. He told me all

  1995. that I ever did.

  1996. So when the

  1997. Samaritans came

  1998. to him,

  1999. they asked him

  2000. to stay with

  2001. them,

  2002. and he stayed

  2003. there two days,

  2004. and many more

  2005. believed because

  2006. of his word.

  2007. They said to

  2008. the woman,

  2009. it is no longer

  2010. because of what

  2011. you said that we

  2012. believe,

  2013. for we have

  2014. heard for

  2015. ourselves,

  2016. and we know

  2017. that this is

  2018. indeed the

  2019. Savior of the

  2020. world.

  2021. This is what we

  2022. long to see,

  2023. church.

  2024. This is what we

  2025. long to see.

  2026. Who will you

  2027. share this with?

  2028. who will you

  2029. bring this

  2030. message to?

  2031. Who around

  2032. you is thirsty

  2033. for living

  2034. water?

  2035. Let's pray.

  2036. Lord, we thank

  2037. you for this

  2038. promise of

  2039. eternal

  2040. satisfaction,

  2041. eternal life.

  2042. It's a free

  2043. gift that you

  2044. alone have

  2045. purchased that

  2046. we can only

  2047. find in you,

  2048. and Lord,

  2049. our souls were

  2050. made to delight

  2051. in you.

  2052. We pray,

  2053. God, that as

  2054. we consider what

  2055. you've done,

  2056. as we consider

  2057. the work of

  2058. Christ, that it

  2059. wouldn't be

  2060. information only,

  2061. that it would

  2062. move us out

  2063. of these doors

  2064. to spread the

  2065. message of the

  2066. gospel to any

  2067. who would hear.

  2068. And we pray,

  2069. Lord, that you

  2070. would bring death

  2071. to life through

  2072. the faithful witness

  2073. of this congregation.

  2074. We pray in

  2075. Christ's name.

  2076. Amen.
