  1. If you would, please open up your Bibles this morning to John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  3. This is the chapter that R.C. Sproul calls the most important chapter in the Gospel of John.

  4. I'm not sure that I could make a claim like that,

  5. but I'm confident that as we spend the next several weeks walking through this chapter together,

  6. we will see just how rich and how beautiful and how full it is of the glory of Christ,

  7. how it presents our need for Him and the ways that He has provided for us.

  8. So let's turn there now, John chapter 6, and we'll read verses 1 through 35.

    John 6 chapter mention

  9. Follow along with me as I read.

  10. After this, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.

  11. And a large crowd was following Him because they saw the signs that He was doing on the sick.

  12. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

  13. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.

  14. Lifting up His eyes then and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward Him,

  15. Jesus said to Philip,

  16. Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?

  17. He said this to test Him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

  18. Philip answered Him,

  19. Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get just a little.

  20. One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him,

  21. There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?

  22. Jesus said,

  23. Have the people sit down.

  24. Now there was much grass in the place,

  25. so the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

  26. However, Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks,

  27. He distributed them to those who were seated,

  28. so also the fish, as much as they wanted.

  29. And when they had eaten their fill, He told His disciples,

  30. Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.

  31. So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments

  32. from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.

  33. When the people saw the sign that He had done, they said,

  34. This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.

  35. Perceiving then that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king,

  36. Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by Himself.

  37. And when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

  38. got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.

  39. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.

  40. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.

  41. When they had rowed about three or four miles,

  42. they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat,

  43. and they were frightened.

  44. But He said to them,

  45. It is I. Do not be afraid.

  46. Then they were glad to take Him into the boat,

  47. and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

  48. On the next day, the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea

  49. saw that there had only been one boat there,

  50. and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples,

  51. but that His disciples had gone away alone.

  52. And other boats from Tiberias came near the place

  53. where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

  54. So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples,

  55. they themselves got into the boat and went to Capernaum seeking Jesus.

  56. When they found Him on the other side of the sea,

  57. they said to Him,

  58. Rabbi, when did you come here?

  59. Jesus answered them,

  60. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  61. you are seeking Me, not because you saw the signs,

  62. but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

  63. Do not work for the food that perishes,

  64. but for the food that endures to eternal life,

  65. which the Son of Man will give to you.

  66. For on Him God the Father has set His seal.

  67. Then they said to Him,

  68. What must we do to be doing the works of God?

  69. Jesus answered them,

  70. This is the work of God,

  71. that you believe in Him whom He has sent.

  72. So they said to Him,

  73. Then what sign do you do that we may see you and believe you?

  74. What work do you perform?

  75. Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness,

  76. as it is written,

  77. He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  78. Jesus then said to them,

  79. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  80. It was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven,

  81. but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

  82. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven

  83. and gives life to the world.

  84. They said to Him,

  85. Sir, give us this bread always.

  86. Jesus said to them,

  87. I am the bread of life.

  88. Whoever comes to Me shall not hunger,

  89. and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.

  90. This is the Word of God.

  91. Let's bow once more and pray.

  92. Father,

  93. this is a picture of Your glorious provision for our need.

  94. In Christ.

  95. So we pray now as we open up this Word

  96. and discuss it in this brief time,

  97. Lord, would You do eternal work in us

  98. as we open up Your Word and seek You in it.

  99. We pray in Christ's name.

  100. Amen.

  101. Two weeks in a row,

  102. now we have quoted C.S. Lewis,

  103. and if you thought there's no way

  104. he's going to do it three weeks in a row,

  105. you were wrong.

  106. We're going for three.

  107. This one is from his book,

  108. The Weight of Glory.

  109. He says this.

  110. He says,

  111. It would seem that our Lord finds our desires

  112. not too strong but too weak.

  113. We are half-hearted creatures,

  114. fooling about with drink and sex and ambition

  115. when infinite joy is offered us.

  116. Like an ignorant child

  117. who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum

  118. because he cannot imagine

  119. what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea,

  120. we are far too easily pleased.

  121. I wonder this morning as we read this passage

  122. if that describes you.

  123. You and I,

  124. we were made for eternal,

  125. infinite joy in Christ,

  126. and anything less than that is too small.

  127. But far too often,

  128. I think we are earthly-minded.

  129. We have tunnel vision

  130. for our physical, immediate needs,

  131. and we ignore the greatness

  132. of our inheritance in Christ.

  133. We seek temporary satisfaction,

  134. and we ignore the eternal joy

  135. that's offered to us in the gospel.

  136. In other words,

  137. we make a really big deal

  138. out of really small things,

  139. and a really small deal

  140. out of really big things.

  141. I want our passage this morning

  142. to help correct that in us.

  143. What we see here in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  144. is two more signs that Jesus performs.

  145. We've seen already,

  146. Jesus came performing signs and miracles.

  147. He came performing these physical signs,

  148. meeting physical needs.

  149. But the whole point

  150. was to demonstrate a greater,

  151. truer, more lasting promise

  152. that our greatest needs

  153. and our greatest desires

  154. are met ultimately and only in Christ.

  155. We're going to see this

  156. in three ways this morning.

  157. This will be our outline this morning

  158. if you're taking notes,

  159. following along.

  160. We're going to see three ways

  161. Christ meets our deepest needs.

  162. Three ways Christ meets our deepest needs.

  163. First, we see that Jesus

  164. is a God of great provision.

  165. Jesus is a God of great provision.

  166. Look there with me

  167. to the beginning of chapter 6.

  168. Here we see this extraordinary miracle,

  169. the feeding of the 5,000.

  170. This is the only miracle

  171. except for the resurrection.

  172. This is the only miracle

  173. that shows up in all four gospels.

  174. And it shows us that our God

  175. is a need-meeting God.

  176. He is a God of great provision.

  177. Look there to verse 1.

  178. John tells us that

  179. after the encounter with the Pharisees

  180. that we discussed last week,

  181. Jesus went away to the other side

  182. of the Sea of Galilee

  183. and it seems like a large crowd

  184. was following Him there.

  185. Jesus' popularity was growing.

  186. Mark 6 in a parallel account

  187. and Mark tells us that

  188. when the people recognized Jesus

  189. and His disciples

  190. and saw where they were headed,

  191. people from all of the neighboring towns

  192. ran there ahead of Him

  193. to meet Him there,

  194. to get there in advance of Him.

  195. But John clues us in here

  196. to their motive.

  197. And just like we've already seen already,

  198. they were seeking Christ

  199. not for Him,

  200. but for what they might get from Him.

  201. They were seeking Christ

  202. not for Christ,

  203. but for what Christ might do

  204. for them.

  205. As these crowds gathered around,

  206. Jesus looked up,

  207. He saw them,

  208. He saw all the people coming to Him,

  209. and He saw an opportunity

  210. for a lesson.

  211. So He asks Philip,

  212. His disciple,

  213. where are we going to buy bread

  214. so that all of these people

  215. may eat?

  216. John tells us plainly there

  217. in verse 6

  218. that Jesus said this

  219. to test Him

  220. for He Himself

  221. for He Himself knew

  222. what He was going to do.

  223. This was a test.

  224. Would Philip

  225. see with spiritual trust,

  226. with the eyes of faith

  227. in Christ,

  228. would he see

  229. that Christ is able

  230. to provide all the needs

  231. of anyone who know Him,

  232. or would he see

  233. with natural,

  234. physical sight?

  235. Well, how did Philip respond?

  236. He responded

  237. like how most men would.

  238. Philip,

  239. he began to calculate the tab.

  240. How much is this going to cost?

  241. Some of you men

  242. have raised daughters

  243. who got engaged

  244. and got married,

  245. and you've had the experience

  246. of calculating the tab

  247. of a wedding bill.

  248. How much is this going to cost

  249. to feed this many people?

  250. Maybe you felt like

  251. what Philip was feeling here.

  252. Philip,

  253. he was thinking rationally here,

  254. thinking logistically.

  255. How in the world

  256. are we possibly

  257. going to feed

  258. this many people?

  259. What we see here

  260. is a picture,

  261. is an image

  262. of great need.

  263. We call this

  264. the feeding of the 5,000,

  265. but everyone agrees

  266. that the number

  267. was actually far,

  268. far greater

  269. than 5,000.

  270. In verse 10,

  271. it says,

  272. just the men

  273. added up to 5,000.

  274. Are you considering

  275. that this was

  276. the time of the Passover,

  277. the busy time,

  278. where many more people

  279. were there in the town,

  280. considering that women

  281. and children

  282. were also there with them?

  283. The number,

  284. actual number,

  285. likely was much closer

  286. to 20,000 individuals

  287. there on the hill.

  288. And Peter says,

  289. even eight months' wages,

  290. 200 denarii,

  291. eight months' wages,

  292. wouldn't even begin

  293. to cover it.

  294. Now, this was a tremendous need.

  295. It's almost comical

  296. what happens next.

  297. Look there to verse 8.

  298. Andrew,

  299. Simon Peter's brother,

  300. he steps up to the task

  301. and says,

  302. well, there is a boy here

  303. who has five barley loaves

  304. and two fish.

  305. Well, what are they

  306. for so many?

  307. You know, it's interesting.

  308. This account shows up

  309. in all four Gospels.

  310. John's is the only account

  311. that gives us this detail

  312. that these were barley loaves.

  313. I'm not sure about you,

  314. but when I read this story,

  315. when I think,

  316. the image in my mind,

  317. I'm thinking something

  318. more like a French baguette,

  319. a large loaf of bread.

  320. That's not what this was.

  321. These were barley loaves.

  322. This was poor people bread.

  323. This was the cheapest possible bread

  324. that you could buy.

  325. It was something more like crackers,

  326. just enough for the little boy to eat.

  327. And the fish,

  328. it wasn't redfish

  329. or largemouth bass

  330. that would feed several people.

  331. These were more kind of like sardines,

  332. something that would just

  333. give a little bit of flavor

  334. to the crackers.

  335. You see Andrew's dilemma here.

  336. He's looking at this meager provision

  337. and saying,

  338. this is barely enough

  339. to feed this little boy.

  340. How in the world

  341. will this feed the multitude?

  342. The gap between what they needed

  343. and what they had

  344. was great.

  345. It was an impossible situation.

  346. What we see,

  347. this is not impossible with God.

  348. Verse 10,

  349. it says,

  350. Jesus had the people sit down.

  351. This is the first miracle.

  352. The 20,000 people sat down

  353. and listened to what he had to say.

  354. And he took these loaves

  355. and when he had given thanks,

  356. he began to pass them out.

  357. And in the same way,

  358. he began to distribute the fish.

  359. And according to verse 11,

  360. look at this.

  361. It says,

  362. they all had as much as they wanted.

  363. Could you just imagine

  364. being there in that crowd?

  365. I'm not sure if I would rather

  366. be the first person in line

  367. or the last that day.

  368. To be the first person in line

  369. and to receive the provision

  370. to take exactly what you needed

  371. and then to see the basket pass

  372. and see enough for the next family

  373. and the next family

  374. and the next family

  375. to see those baskets

  376. work their way

  377. all through the crowd

  378. and realize there's enough

  379. for everyone here?

  380. Or to be the last person in line

  381. and to know there's just no way

  382. there's going to be enough for me.

  383. There's no way

  384. I'm going to eat my fill

  385. and to see that doubt

  386. just grow weaker and weaker

  387. and our hope increase stronger

  388. and stronger and stronger

  389. until you realize

  390. there's enough even for me.

  391. Of course,

  392. there was more than enough.

  393. In fact,

  394. verse 12 says that

  395. when they had eaten their fill,

  396. they gathered up leftovers.

  397. The 12 baskets

  398. with fragments

  399. from the five barley loaves.

  400. This tremendous need

  401. was overcome

  402. by a miraculous

  403. and tremendous provision.

  404. I wonder if you've ever experienced

  405. the provision of God.

  406. Amanda and I,

  407. there's been times

  408. in our marriage

  409. where Amanda and I

  410. have had a very clear need,

  411. more than a few times

  412. in our marriage.

  413. And I can think back

  414. on a few of those times

  415. and praise God

  416. specifically for the ways

  417. that He has provided

  418. exactly what we needed.

  419. There's one time

  420. when I was in seminary

  421. and we were just dirt poor

  422. and our money was drying up quickly

  423. and we sat down

  424. and we talked about

  425. what we needed

  426. just to make ends meet,

  427. where the gap was

  428. in our budget

  429. and we discussed

  430. an exact dollar amount.

  431. We didn't share this

  432. with anybody else.

  433. And within a week,

  434. Amanda got a phone call

  435. from a friend

  436. who said that she needed her

  437. to come

  438. and to watch her little girl.

  439. Would she be willing?

  440. She couldn't pay much.

  441. But what she offered to pay

  442. was exactly

  443. what we needed.

  444. You hear story

  445. after story

  446. after story

  447. about God doing this.

  448. He's a need-meeting God.

  449. Our God loves

  450. to provide

  451. for the needs

  452. of His people.

  453. Our God knows

  454. our needs

  455. better than we know

  456. them ourselves

  457. and it delights Him

  458. when we receive

  459. from His hand

  460. good provision

  461. and when we return

  462. back to Him

  463. thanksgiving

  464. for all that He's provided.

  465. But

  466. we need to realize

  467. that we have

  468. no promise

  469. of this type of provision

  470. on this side

  471. of eternity.

  472. this miracle

  473. here

  474. and the feeding

  475. of the 5,000

  476. is not a promise

  477. of physical provision

  478. here and now

  479. but a pointer

  480. to eternal provision.

  481. It is a pointer

  482. to true

  483. and lasting

  484. satisfaction

  485. in Christ.

  486. That is what we need

  487. more than anything else.

  488. That's our greatest need.

  489. More than food

  490. on the table.

  491. More than money

  492. in our bank account

  493. more than a roof

  494. over our head.

  495. We need our sins

  496. forgiven

  497. in the presence

  498. of Christ

  499. with us.

  500. We need our souls

  501. to be satisfied

  502. in Him.

  503. Our greatest need

  504. is Christ Himself

  505. and the good news

  506. of the gospel

  507. is that He is

  508. here

  509. to give us

  510. as much

  511. as we want

  512. of Him.

  513. this is what

  514. He tells us

  515. in verse 35.

  516. He says

  517. the point

  518. of this sign

  519. the point

  520. of this provision

  521. is that

  522. I am

  523. the bread

  524. of life.

  525. I am

  526. the bread

  527. of life.

  528. Come to me

  529. not just to have

  530. your bellies filled

  531. but that you might

  532. find true

  533. and lasting

  534. satisfaction

  535. for your souls.

  536. Church

  537. we need

  538. to think

  539. bigger

  540. not less

  541. of our needs

  542. and we need

  543. to think

  544. bigger

  545. not less

  546. of God's

  547. provision.

  548. Is this

  549. what we seek

  550. after?

  551. Is this

  552. what we

  553. hunger for?

  554. Is this

  555. what we

  556. desire

  557. more than

  558. anything?

  559. Let your

  560. temporary

  561. need

  562. teach you

  563. of your

  564. eternal

  565. need

  566. and let

  567. God's

  568. temporary

  569. provision

  570. teach you

  571. point you

  572. to his

  573. eternal

  574. provision

  575. of

  576. himself

  577. in

  578. Christ.

  579. Second

  580. we see

  581. that Jesus

  582. is a

  583. God

  584. of great

  585. protection.

  586. Jesus

  587. is a

  588. God

  589. of

  590. great

  591. protection.

  592. Just like

  593. all of us

  594. want

  595. provision

  596. I think

  597. it's safe

  598. to say

  599. all of us

  600. want

  601. protection.

  602. All of us

  603. want to

  604. be safe.

  605. We want

  606. protection

  607. from danger.

  608. We want

  609. security

  610. from our

  611. enemies.

  612. We want

  613. to feel

  614. safe.

  615. That's

  616. what the

  617. Jews

  618. wanted

  619. as well.

  620. Look

  621. there to

  622. verse 14.

  623. It says

  624. when they

  625. saw this

  626. sign they

  627. praised

  628. him.

  629. This is

  630. the prophet

  631. who is

  632. to come

  633. into the

  634. world.

  635. And not

  636. only that

  637. verse 15

  638. says they

  639. were about

  640. to come

  641. and take

  642. him by

  643. force

  644. to make

  645. him

  646. king.

  647. Now we

  648. have to

  649. understand

  650. that the

  651. Passover

  652. season for

  653. the Jews

  654. was just

  655. bursting

  656. with

  657. national

  658. pride

  659. and

  660. patriotism.

  661. This was

  662. like the

  663. 4th of

  664. July on

  665. steroids.

  666. They were

  667. just zealous

  668. and excited.

  669. They were

  670. supercharged

  671. with pride

  672. for the

  673. Jewish

  674. nation.

  675. And so

  676. it makes

  677. sense,

  678. doesn't it,

  679. that at

  680. this time

  681. of the

  682. year more

  683. than any

  684. they would

  685. be thinking

  686. and seeking

  687. and looking

  688. for and

  689. hoping for

  690. a king.

  691. Someone who

  692. would rule

  693. over their

  694. people.

  695. Someone who

  696. would triumph

  697. over the

  698. Romans.

  699. Someone who

  700. would lead

  701. them and

  702. protect them.

  703. And who

  704. better than

  705. this guy

  706. who just

  707. gave us

  708. all a

  709. free lunch?

  710. Right?

  711. We all

  712. want this,

  713. don't we?

  714. We all

  715. share a

  716. desire and

  717. a need

  718. for good

  719. leadership.

  720. And that

  721. desire,

  722. we need to

  723. see this,

  724. the desire

  725. was not

  726. wrong,

  727. but the

  728. timing was.

  729. Jesus was

  730. not there

  731. to rule

  732. and to

  733. reign.

  734. Not yet.

  735. He was

  736. not there

  737. to be

  738. their king.

  739. Not yet.

  740. He still

  741. has work

  742. to do.

  743. And the

  744. kingdom that

  745. he was

  746. coming to

  747. establish

  748. was much

  749. bigger,

  750. much better,

  751. much greater

  752. than what

  753. they could

  754. ever imagine.

  755. The protection

  756. that he was

  757. coming to

  758. provide for

  759. his people

  760. was much

  761. better,

  762. much more

  763. lasting than

  764. they could

  765. have ever

  766. imagined.

  767. I feel

  768. like I

  769. need to

  770. make this

  771. application

  772. here,

  773. especially

  774. with election

  775. season coming

  776. up.

  777. We'll probably

  778. need to talk

  779. about this

  780. a few more

  781. times before

  782. then.

  783. Our desire

  784. for good

  785. leadership is

  786. not a bad

  787. one.

  788. It is

  789. good and

  790. it is right

  791. for us to

  792. desire godly

  793. leadership,

  794. to pray for

  795. our leaders,

  796. to cast a vote

  797. for those who

  798. we feel might

  799. lead us in

  800. the will

  801. of God,

  802. to desire

  803. godly

  804. leadership,

  805. to pray that

  806. God would

  807. send us

  808. political

  809. leaders who

  810. would lead

  811. and serve

  812. in ways

  813. that are

  814. pleasing to

  815. him and

  816. are a blessing

  817. to the

  818. people.

  819. But we

  820. have to

  821. realize that

  822. this desire

  823. for God

  824. fearing

  825. leadership,

  826. for us to

  827. be a God

  828. fearing

  829. people,

  830. it will

  831. not be

  832. totally

  833. realized on

  834. this side

  835. of eternity.

  836. It is not

  837. fully realized

  838. in the

  839. Republican

  840. Party,

  841. it is not

  842. fully realized

  843. in the

  844. Democratic

  845. Party,

  846. it is not

  847. going to be

  848. fully realized

  849. in America

  850. or in any

  851. other nation

  852. of the

  853. earth.

  854. That desire

  855. will be

  856. fully realized

  857. when Christ

  858. returns,

  859. when Christ

  860. establishes

  861. his kingdom

  862. on the

  863. earth.

  864. Jesus knew

  865. that his

  866. time to

  867. reign was

  868. not yet

  869. here.

  870. So verse

  871. 15 says,

  872. when Jesus

  873. saw that

  874. they were

  875. wanting to

  876. make him

  877. king,

  878. he didn't

  879. remain,

  880. he didn't

  881. stick around,

  882. he withdrew

  883. again to

  884. the mountain

  885. by himself.

  886. Apparently,

  887. his disciples

  888. didn't wait

  889. around for

  890. Jesus.

  891. They went

  892. on without

  893. him because

  894. it says,

  895. when evening

  896. came,

  897. they went

  898. down to

  899. the sea,

  900. got into

  901. a boat,

  902. and started

  903. across the

  904. sea to

  905. Capernaum.

  906. And it

  907. was dark.

  908. Now for me,

  909. that's strike

  910. number one.

  911. I don't

  912. think I've

  913. ever been

  914. out to

  915. sea,

  916. out on

  917. a boat

  918. in the

  919. ocean when

  920. it's pitch

  921. black,

  922. maybe some

  923. of you

  924. have.

  925. But I

  926. imagine that

  927. that is

  928. not the

  929. best time

  930. for them

  931. to be

  932. out at

  933. sea,

  934. especially

  935. they didn't

  936. have the

  937. modern

  938. conveniences

  939. that we

  940. have of

  941. GPS

  942. navigation

  943. or even

  944. boat

  945. lights to

  946. see where

  947. they're

  948. going.

  949. Everything

  950. is just

  951. dark and

  952. eerily lit

  953. up by

  954. the moon.

  955. And to

  956. make things

  957. worse,

  958. strike number

  959. two,

  960. the waves

  961. begin to

  962. get rough.

  963. The water

  964. starts to

  965. get choppy

  966. because verse

  967. 18 says a

  968. strong wind

  969. was blowing

  970. there throughout

  971. the area.

  972. Now I have

  973. been on a

  974. boat when

  975. things got

  976. choppy and

  977. I liked it

  978. for a little

  979. bit.

  980. It was kind

  981. of fun until

  982. it wasn't.

  983. You feel out

  984. of control

  985. and dangerous

  986. and apparently

  987. the Sea of

  988. Galilee is

  989. about 600

  990. feet below

  991. sea level

  992. and so some

  993. combination of

  994. cool and

  995. warm air that

  996. I don't quite

  997. understand,

  998. it comes in

  999. and it

  1000. just mixes

  1001. up the

  1002. water and

  1003. the water

  1004. begins to

  1005. just suddenly

  1006. get violently

  1007. rough and

  1008. it happens

  1009. quickly.

  1010. The water

  1011. becomes tumultuous.

  1012. One minute the

  1013. water is calm

  1014. and the next

  1015. minute you're

  1016. tossing and

  1017. turning,

  1018. holding on to

  1019. the boat,

  1020. you're at the

  1021. mercy of the

  1022. ebb and the

  1023. flow of the

  1024. waves.

  1025. This is a

  1026. dangerous place

  1027. to be and

  1028. you can imagine

  1029. the fear in the

  1030. minds of the

  1031. disciples.

  1032. Then comes

  1033. strike number

  1034. three.

  1035. You're panicking

  1036. in the midst

  1037. of the storm,

  1038. things are dark,

  1039. things are spooky

  1040. and you look out

  1041. at the water

  1042. and there's

  1043. someone walking

  1044. on top of the

  1045. waves.

  1046. Verse 19

  1047. says when they

  1048. had rowed about

  1049. three or four

  1050. miles,

  1051. they saw Jesus

  1052. walking on the

  1053. sea and coming

  1054. near the boat.

  1055. This is

  1056. terrifying.

  1057. Matthew's account

  1058. says that they

  1059. thought they saw

  1060. a ghost and

  1061. they cried out

  1062. in fear.

  1063. But then Jesus

  1064. says something.

  1065. here that I

  1066. want us to see

  1067. this.

  1068. He says

  1069. something that

  1070. puts them at

  1071. ease.

  1072. Look at what

  1073. he said.

  1074. Verse 20,

  1075. but he said

  1076. to them,

  1077. it is I

  1078. do not be

  1079. afraid.

  1080. And then

  1081. something changed.

  1082. All of a sudden

  1083. they were glad

  1084. to take him

  1085. into the boat

  1086. and immediately

  1087. the boat was

  1088. at the land

  1089. to which they

  1090. were going.

  1091. I want you

  1092. to answer

  1093. this question

  1094. in your mind.

  1095. So what

  1096. happened to

  1097. change the

  1098. disciples'

  1099. fear into

  1100. gladness?

  1101. The storm

  1102. was still

  1103. raging.

  1104. The storm

  1105. didn't go

  1106. away.

  1107. The water

  1108. was still

  1109. choppy.

  1110. It's still

  1111. dark.

  1112. It's still

  1113. spooky.

  1114. This figure

  1115. is still

  1116. coming to

  1117. them.

  1118. What caused

  1119. the change

  1120. from fear

  1121. to gladness?

  1122. It was the

  1123. realization

  1124. temptation

  1125. that although

  1126. they were

  1127. in the

  1128. presence

  1129. of danger,

  1130. they were

  1131. in the

  1132. presence

  1133. of God.

  1134. And he

  1135. was coming

  1136. to them

  1137. not to

  1138. do them

  1139. harm,

  1140. but for

  1141. good.

  1142. These two

  1143. parts here

  1144. of Jesus'

  1145. response,

  1146. just four

  1147. words in

  1148. the Greek,

  1149. this ought

  1150. to give

  1151. us comfort

  1152. and confidence

  1153. for any

  1154. earthly

  1155. danger

  1156. that we

  1157. face.

  1158. Look what

  1159. he says.

  1160. He says,

  1161. it is I.

  1162. Just two

  1163. words here

  1164. in the

  1165. Greek,

  1166. ego,

  1167. a me.

  1168. If you

  1169. translate this

  1170. literally,

  1171. do you know

  1172. what it

  1173. says?

  1174. It says,

  1175. I am.

  1176. I am.

  1177. You may

  1178. have heard

  1179. before that

  1180. John's

  1181. gospel has

  1182. seven I

  1183. am

  1184. statements

  1185. of Jesus.

  1186. We see

  1187. another one

  1188. here in

  1189. this passage,

  1190. I am

  1191. the bread

  1192. of life.

  1193. In the

  1194. weeks to

  1195. come,

  1196. Lord willing,

  1197. we'll see

  1198. some more.

  1199. We'll hear

  1200. him say,

  1201. I am

  1202. the way,

  1203. the truth,

  1204. the life.

  1205. No one

  1206. comes to

  1207. the Father

  1208. but by

  1209. me.

  1210. I am

  1211. the door.

  1212. Before

  1213. Abraham

  1214. was,

  1215. I am.

  1216. Seven

  1217. sayings of

  1218. I am.

  1219. For some

  1220. reason,

  1221. this one

  1222. gets overlooked

  1223. in the

  1224. count.

  1225. But here

  1226. I stand,

  1227. this one

  1228. belongs.

  1229. It's no

  1230. less an I

  1231. am statement

  1232. than any

  1233. of the

  1234. others.

  1235. It's the

  1236. same two

  1237. words.

  1238. It's the

  1239. same divine

  1240. revelation of

  1241. Jesus.

  1242. Ego

  1243. a me.

  1244. It is

  1245. I,

  1246. I am,

  1247. I am.

  1248. And if you

  1249. know your

  1250. Bible,

  1251. especially the

  1252. book of

  1253. Exodus,

  1254. you know

  1255. that when

  1256. the Lord

  1257. revealed his

  1258. name to

  1259. Moses,

  1260. what did

  1261. he say?

  1262. I am

  1263. who I

  1264. am.

  1265. Tell them

  1266. I am

  1267. has sent

  1268. them to

  1269. you.

  1270. Jesus

  1271. knows

  1272. exactly

  1273. what he's

  1274. saying

  1275. here.

  1276. This is

  1277. a direct

  1278. claim to

  1279. divinity.

  1280. Jesus is

  1281. revealing

  1282. himself

  1283. as God.

  1284. But it's

  1285. the second

  1286. part of

  1287. this phrase

  1288. here that

  1289. puts them

  1290. at ease,

  1291. isn't it?

  1292. I am,

  1293. do not

  1294. be afraid.

  1295. For those

  1296. who don't

  1297. know the

  1298. Lord,

  1299. his presence

  1300. is their

  1301. greatest

  1302. danger.

  1303. More than

  1304. waves

  1305. chopping,

  1306. more than

  1307. dangerous

  1308. weather,

  1309. the presence

  1310. of God

  1311. is the

  1312. greatest

  1313. danger

  1314. for any

  1315. sinner.

  1316. But for

  1317. those who

  1318. know him,

  1319. we can

  1320. claim this

  1321. comfort,

  1322. we can

  1323. claim this

  1324. protection

  1325. from any

  1326. danger we

  1327. face.

  1328. I am,

  1329. I am,

  1330. do not

  1331. be afraid.

  1332. Christian,

  1333. we need to

  1334. know that

  1335. there is

  1336. no danger

  1337. here in

  1338. this life

  1339. no amount

  1340. of chaos,

  1341. no turmoil,

  1342. no disaster,

  1343. no earthly

  1344. threat,

  1345. no earthly

  1346. loss that

  1347. can overcome

  1348. the presence

  1349. of Christ

  1350. in you.

  1351. No matter

  1352. what dangers

  1353. you face,

  1354. if you belong

  1355. to Christ,

  1356. you are safe

  1357. in the hands

  1358. of God.

  1359. No one can

  1360. take that

  1361. from you.

  1362. I am,

  1363. do not

  1364. be afraid.

  1365. This doesn't

  1366. mean that we'll

  1367. never face

  1368. danger.

  1369. quite the

  1370. opposite,

  1371. in fact,

  1372. but what it

  1373. means is

  1374. that we

  1375. now face

  1376. any danger

  1377. with confidence.

  1378. The confidence

  1379. of Paul in

  1380. Romans,

  1381. he says,

  1382. I am sure

  1383. that neither

  1384. death,

  1385. nor life,

  1386. nor angels,

  1387. nor rulers,

  1388. nor things

  1389. present,

  1390. nor things

  1391. to come,

  1392. nor powers,

  1393. nor height,

  1394. nor depth,

  1395. nor anything

  1396. else in all

  1397. creation will

  1398. be able to

  1399. separate us

  1400. from the love

  1401. of God in

  1402. Christ Jesus

  1403. our Lord.

  1404. Lord.

  1405. If nothing

  1406. can separate

  1407. us from

  1408. that,

  1409. then what

  1410. do we have

  1411. to fear?

  1412. This is the

  1413. confidence that

  1414. Christians have

  1415. in the face

  1416. of any

  1417. earthly danger.

  1418. fear.

  1419. You may

  1420. know that

  1421. Tim Keller

  1422. passed away

  1423. last week,

  1424. you may know

  1425. that name,

  1426. after a

  1427. nearly

  1428. three-year

  1429. battle with

  1430. pancreatic

  1431. cancer.

  1432. That is the

  1433. very scenario

  1434. that men

  1435. and women

  1436. fear almost

  1437. more than

  1438. anything.

  1439. A terminal

  1440. condition,

  1441. it's one of the

  1442. nastiest,

  1443. cruelest dangers

  1444. that we face.

  1445. You talk about

  1446. being afraid,

  1447. you talk about

  1448. being in danger,

  1449. you talk about

  1450. needing protection.

  1451. I would imagine

  1452. when you hear

  1453. those words,

  1454. that diagnosis

  1455. from the doctor,

  1456. that is when

  1457. you want protection

  1458. more than any

  1459. other time.

  1460. You know what

  1461. he said in his

  1462. last days to

  1463. his family?

  1464. Just before he

  1465. passed,

  1466. he said,

  1467. there is no

  1468. downside in

  1469. me leaving.

  1470. Not in the

  1471. slightest.

  1472. No downside.

  1473. Why?

  1474. Because he

  1475. knew that

  1476. despite this

  1477. danger that

  1478. would kill

  1479. him,

  1480. he was

  1481. protected.

  1482. He was

  1483. safe in

  1484. the hands

  1485. of God.

  1486. He could

  1487. face it

  1488. with confidence.

  1489. Because the

  1490. Lord is with

  1491. me,

  1492. I will not

  1493. fear even

  1494. death itself.

  1495. The Lord

  1496. will protect

  1497. me.

  1498. This may

  1499. kill me,

  1500. but all

  1501. he can do

  1502. is bring me

  1503. to him.

  1504. This light

  1505. heart and

  1506. momentary

  1507. affliction

  1508. is preparing

  1509. for us an

  1510. eternal weight

  1511. of glory

  1512. beyond all

  1513. comparison.

  1514. Is this how

  1515. we view

  1516. danger,

  1517. Christian?

  1518. Is this how

  1519. we measure

  1520. risk in our

  1521. life?

  1522. Is this how

  1523. we view

  1524. safety?

  1525. We tend

  1526. to view

  1527. safety and

  1528. risk with

  1529. earthly eyes,

  1530. but Christ,

  1531. he's purchased

  1532. for us

  1533. true,

  1534. eternal

  1535. protection.

  1536. If you

  1537. want to be

  1538. safe,

  1539. truly safe,

  1540. seek shelter

  1541. in the

  1542. presence of

  1543. Christ.

  1544. And when we

  1545. reach the

  1546. shore of

  1547. eternity,

  1548. all the

  1549. chaos of

  1550. this present

  1551. life with

  1552. all its

  1553. dangers,

  1554. all its

  1555. toils and

  1556. snares,

  1557. it will feel

  1558. like it was

  1559. over in

  1560. just one

  1561. fleeting

  1562. moment.

  1563. This type

  1564. of confidence

  1565. and security

  1566. in the face

  1567. of danger,

  1568. it baffles

  1569. the world.

  1570. They don't

  1571. have this

  1572. type of

  1573. assurance.

  1574. They can't

  1575. make sense

  1576. of it.

  1577. What is the

  1578. basis of

  1579. the Christian's

  1580. confidence?

  1581. What is the

  1582. secret to

  1583. infinite joy

  1584. that lifts us

  1585. up out of

  1586. our present

  1587. circumstances?

  1588. I'll tell

  1589. you what it

  1590. is.

  1591. It is

  1592. faith in

  1593. the promises

  1594. of God.

  1595. It is

  1596. trust in

  1597. the rock

  1598. solid

  1599. promises

  1600. of God.

  1601. This is

  1602. our third

  1603. and final

  1604. point this

  1605. morning.

  1606. Third,

  1607. we see

  1608. that Jesus

  1609. is a

  1610. God of

  1611. great

  1612. promise.

  1613. Look there

  1614. to verse

  1615. 25.

  1616. It says,

  1617. When the

  1618. people found

  1619. him on the

  1620. other side

  1621. of the sea,

  1622. they said

  1623. to him,

  1624. Rabbi,

  1625. when did

  1626. you come

  1627. here?

  1628. And

  1629. Jesus,

  1630. knowing

  1631. everything,

  1632. knowing that

  1633. they were

  1634. seeing with

  1635. only earthly

  1636. sight,

  1637. he went

  1638. straight to

  1639. the heart.

  1640. It says,

  1641. Truly,

  1642. truly,

  1643. I say to

  1644. you,

  1645. you are

  1646. seeking

  1647. me,

  1648. not because

  1649. you saw

  1650. the signs,

  1651. but because

  1652. you ate

  1653. your fill

  1654. of the

  1655. loaves.

  1656. Now,

  1657. listen to

  1658. this.

  1659. He says,

  1660. Do not

  1661. work for

  1662. the food

  1663. that perishes,

  1664. but for

  1665. the food

  1666. that endures

  1667. to eternal

  1668. life,

  1669. which the

  1670. Son of

  1671. man will

  1672. give to

  1673. you,

  1674. for on

  1675. him the

  1676. Father has

  1677. set his

  1678. seal.

  1679. Do not

  1680. work for

  1681. the food

  1682. that perishes.

  1683. You know,

  1684. this is all

  1685. most people

  1686. know how

  1687. to do.

  1688. This is all

  1689. that we

  1690. know how

  1691. to do.

  1692. We spend

  1693. our energy,

  1694. we work

  1695. hard,

  1696. we wear

  1697. ourselves

  1698. out so

  1699. that we

  1700. can put

  1701. food on

  1702. the table,

  1703. then we

  1704. eat the

  1705. food,

  1706. the food

  1707. runs out,

  1708. and now

  1709. we've got

  1710. to go

  1711. work some

  1712. more.

  1713. We

  1714. work to

  1715. earn enough

  1716. money,

  1717. the money

  1718. runs out,

  1719. so now

  1720. we've got

  1721. to go

  1722. work some

  1723. more.

  1724. We hope

  1725. that we'll

  1726. just work

  1727. long enough

  1728. to earn

  1729. as much

  1730. as we

  1731. can,

  1732. to earn

  1733. enough so

  1734. that we

  1735. have enough

  1736. money to

  1737. put enough

  1738. food on

  1739. the table

  1740. for the

  1741. rest of

  1742. our lives,

  1743. but at

  1744. some point

  1745. the money

  1746. will expire,

  1747. the food

  1748. will expire,

  1749. or guess

  1750. what?

  1751. We will

  1752. expire.

  1753. It's all

  1754. so empty,

  1755. but Jesus

  1756. says there

  1757. is another

  1758. way.

  1759. seek the

  1760. food that

  1761. endures to

  1762. eternal life,

  1763. which the

  1764. Son of

  1765. Man will

  1766. give to

  1767. you.

  1768. You may

  1769. remember

  1770. walking through

  1771. Isaiah 55

  1772. together late

  1773. last year,

  1774. and this

  1775. wonderful

  1776. invitation,

  1777. come everyone

  1778. who thirsts,

  1779. come to the

  1780. waters,

  1781. and he who

  1782. has no money,

  1783. come buy and

  1784. eat,

  1785. come buy wine

  1786. and milk

  1787. without money,

  1788. without price.

  1789. Why do you

  1790. spend your

  1791. money for

  1792. that which

  1793. is not

  1794. bread,

  1795. and your

  1796. labor for

  1797. that which

  1798. does not

  1799. satisfy?

  1800. Listen

  1801. diligently to

  1802. me and

  1803. eat what

  1804. is good,

  1805. and delight

  1806. yourselves in

  1807. rich food,

  1808. incline your

  1809. ear and come

  1810. to me here

  1811. that your

  1812. soul may

  1813. live.

  1814. this is the

  1815. invitation that

  1816. Christ is

  1817. making to

  1818. these Pharisees,

  1819. and it's the

  1820. invitation that

  1821. he's making

  1822. to us.

  1823. He's holding

  1824. out this

  1825. incredible offer,

  1826. a never-ending

  1827. buffet,

  1828. eternal

  1829. satisfaction,

  1830. free of

  1831. price,

  1832. eternal

  1833. provision for

  1834. our hunger,

  1835. for our thirst,

  1836. but how did

  1837. they respond?

  1838. With physical

  1839. sight.

  1840. What must

  1841. we be doing

  1842. to do the

  1843. works of God?

  1844. Do you see

  1845. that?

  1846. You see how

  1847. works-minded,

  1848. how physical-minded,

  1849. how earthly-minded

  1850. they are?

  1851. I've been working

  1852. for this bread,

  1853. it perishes,

  1854. it perishes,

  1855. it perishes,

  1856. it runs out,

  1857. you're offering

  1858. me eternal bread,

  1859. what do I have

  1860. to do?

  1861. How do I have

  1862. to work to

  1863. get that bread?

  1864. Jesus says,

  1865. this is the

  1866. work of God,

  1867. that you

  1868. believe in

  1869. him whom

  1870. he has sent.

  1871. This is the

  1872. message of the

  1873. gospel,

  1874. church.

  1875. Eternal

  1876. satisfaction

  1877. is given,

  1878. not earned,

  1879. is given

  1880. through faith

  1881. in Christ.

  1882. That is so

  1883. different from

  1884. the way that

  1885. we're wired.

  1886. We want to

  1887. work, we want

  1888. to earn what

  1889. we're given,

  1890. that's the

  1891. American way,

  1892. you work hard,

  1893. you earn a

  1894. paycheck,

  1895. you get up,

  1896. you do it

  1897. again.

  1898. That is not

  1899. the way it

  1900. works with

  1901. Christ.

  1902. And that is

  1903. not the

  1904. message of

  1905. the Bible.

  1906. One of my

  1907. favorite insights

  1908. from Tim Keller,

  1909. he said,

  1910. Buddha's final

  1911. words before

  1912. he died,

  1913. you know what

  1914. they were?

  1915. Strive without

  1916. ceasing.

  1917. Jesus'

  1918. final words on

  1919. the cross,

  1920. it is finished.

  1921. The gospel

  1922. is not a

  1923. message of

  1924. go do,

  1925. it's a

  1926. message of

  1927. this is what

  1928. Christ has

  1929. done.

  1930. Would you

  1931. receive it?

  1932. Would you

  1933. believe it?

  1934. Would you

  1935. stop working

  1936. to earn it?

  1937. Would you

  1938. receive it

  1939. by faith?

  1940. Christianity

  1941. is not

  1942. another job

  1943. where we

  1944. earn our

  1945. bread,

  1946. we receive

  1947. the bread

  1948. of life

  1949. by believing

  1950. in him.

  1951. The way

  1952. that they

  1953. responded,

  1954. I don't

  1955. think gives

  1956. us much

  1957. hope that

  1958. they got

  1959. it.

  1960. they said,

  1961. what sign

  1962. do you

  1963. do that

  1964. we may

  1965. see and

  1966. believe you?

  1967. What work

  1968. do you

  1969. perform?

  1970. Our fathers,

  1971. they ate the

  1972. manna in the

  1973. wilderness as

  1974. it is written,

  1975. he gave them

  1976. bread from

  1977. heaven to

  1978. eat.

  1979. So what

  1980. can you

  1981. do for

  1982. us,

  1983. Jesus?

  1984. What can

  1985. we see

  1986. you do

  1987. that we

  1988. might see

  1989. and believe?

  1990. And of

  1991. course,

  1992. Jesus doesn't

  1993. take the

  1994. bait,

  1995. but he does

  1996. teach them

  1997. a lesson.

  1998. Jesus said

  1999. to them,

  2000. truly,

  2001. truly,

  2002. I say to

  2003. you,

  2004. it was not

  2005. Moses who

  2006. gave you

  2007. the bread

  2008. from heaven.

  2009. Stop talking

  2010. about Moses.

  2011. Don't put

  2012. your faith

  2013. in Moses,

  2014. don't put

  2015. your hope

  2016. in Moses.

  2017. It was

  2018. not Moses,

  2019. but my

  2020. father gives

  2021. you the

  2022. true bread

  2023. from heaven.

  2024. For the

  2025. bread of

  2026. God is

  2027. he who

  2028. comes down

  2029. from heaven

  2030. and gives

  2031. life to

  2032. the world.

  2033. I am

  2034. the bread

  2035. of life.

  2036. Whoever

  2037. comes to

  2038. me shall

  2039. not hunger,

  2040. whoever

  2041. believes in

  2042. me shall

  2043. never thirst.

  2044. It is an

  2045. offer

  2046. promise of

  2047. true bread.

  2048. Not from

  2049. Moses,

  2050. but from

  2051. God.

  2052. Not manna

  2053. that perishes,

  2054. but a person

  2055. who comes

  2056. down from

  2057. heaven.

  2058. Not for

  2059. physical

  2060. sustenance,

  2061. but for

  2062. eternal life.

  2063. Not just

  2064. for the

  2065. Jews,

  2066. but for

  2067. the world.

  2068. Any

  2069. who believe

  2070. in him.

  2071. Here is the

  2072. promise,

  2073. church.

  2074. anyone who

  2075. comes to

  2076. Christ,

  2077. anyone,

  2078. from the

  2079. moment they

  2080. first believe,

  2081. they will

  2082. begin a

  2083. feast for

  2084. their soul

  2085. that will

  2086. last forever.

  2087. Now,

  2088. we can

  2089. taste it

  2090. now.

  2091. We live

  2092. by this

  2093. bread right

  2094. now,

  2095. but we

  2096. know it

  2097. will get

  2098. better and

  2099. better and

  2100. better,

  2101. more and

  2102. more and

  2103. more satisfying.

  2104. We will

  2105. never lack

  2106. what we

  2107. need the

  2108. most.

  2109. And our

  2110. experience of

  2111. him will

  2112. only get

  2113. better the

  2114. more we

  2115. feast on

  2116. him from

  2117. now to

  2118. the rest of

  2119. eternity.

  2120. You will

  2121. have no

  2122. hunger and

  2123. you will

  2124. have no

  2125. thirst if

  2126. only you

  2127. would believe

  2128. in him.

  2129. Church,

  2130. we were

  2131. made to

  2132. be satisfied

  2133. in him.

  2134. But we

  2135. are far too

  2136. easily pleased.

  2137. so come

  2138. to him.

  2139. Trust

  2140. him.

  2141. Feast

  2142. on him.

  2143. Lean on

  2144. him.

  2145. Believe in

  2146. him and

  2147. be satisfied

  2148. in him.

  2149. And do

  2150. not think

  2151. too small

  2152. of him.

  2153. Let's

  2154. pray.

  2155. Lord

  2156. Jesus,

  2157. we thank

  2158. you that

  2159. you are

  2160. the bread

  2161. of life.

  2162. Who came

  2163. down from

  2164. heaven,

  2165. not just

  2166. to meet

  2167. our temporary

  2168. needs,

  2169. God,

  2170. but to

  2171. meet our

  2172. greatest

  2173. needs,

  2174. our eternal

  2175. needs.

  2176. Lord,

  2177. we need

  2178. nothing more

  2179. than to have

  2180. our sins

  2181. forgiven,

  2182. to be made

  2183. right with

  2184. you,

  2185. to be satisfied

  2186. in you,

  2187. not just

  2188. now,

  2189. but into

  2190. eternity.

  2191. We praise

  2192. you that

  2193. that offer,

  2194. that promise,

  2195. is available

  2196. to any who

  2197. would come to

  2198. you in

  2199. faith.

  2200. And so we

  2201. pray now

  2202. that we

  2203. would rejoice

  2204. in that

  2205. provision,

  2206. if we

  2207. have it,

  2208. and that

  2209. we would

  2210. repent,

  2211. if we

  2212. don't,

  2213. and seek

  2214. you in

  2215. the promises

  2216. made to

  2217. us in

  2218. the gospel.

  2219. We pray

  2220. this in

  2221. Christ's

  2222. name.

  2223. Amen.

  2224. Amen.
