  1. Please open up your Bibles this morning to the book of Psalms.

  2. Book of Psalms. Treg mentioned last week, I was not here with you, but Treg mentioned that we are

  3. beginning a new series during the summer through the book of Psalms. We'll pick back up

  4. right where we left off in the book of John, Lord willing, in August.

  5. But we're going to spend some time together in the Psalms this summer.

  6. And you may have noticed that we titled this sermon series through the Psalms,

  7. The Anatomy of the Soul. And I'll tell you why. Because you asked.

  8. John Calvin, in his commentary on the Psalms, he says this. He says,

  9. I have been accustomed to call this book, I think not inappropriately, an anatomy of all the parts of the soul.

  10. For there is not an emotion of which anyone can be conscious that is not here represented as in a mirror.

  11. Or rather, the Holy Spirit has here drawn to the life all the griefs, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities.

  12. In short, all the distracting emotions with which the minds of men are wont to be agitated.

  13. In other words, one of the main reasons why I think we tend to be so drawn to the Psalms

  14. is because they are so human. Do you find that to be true as you read through the Psalms?

  15. They are expressive and real. Oftentimes they're raw.

  16. They're asking questions that we ask. They're dealing with struggles that we deal with.

  17. They explore the depths of the human soul,

  18. but they do so in ways that align our soul with the Word of God,

  19. with the truth of God's Word.

  20. And so I would add a second illustration to Calvin's quote here that,

  21. yes, the Psalms are an anatomy of the human soul,

  22. but they are also an alignment of the human soul.

  23. Just as you drive down Highway 17, you might hit a pothole

  24. and you have to get your tires realigned so that everything works properly.

  25. So it is with us as we go through life,

  26. the difficulties, the trials that we walk through.

  27. Oftentimes we need a soul realignment.

  28. And the Psalms help us to do just that.

  29. They probe the depths of our heart

  30. and they point us to the promises of God.

  31. I think we'll see both of those functions here in our passage this morning on full display.

  32. So let's open up now.

  33. We're in Psalm chapter 2 this morning.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  34. Lay your eyes there on God's Word and follow along with me as I read.

  35. Why do the nations rage in the people's plot in vain?

  36. The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together

  37. against the Lord and His anointed,

  38. saying,

  39. Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.

  40. He who sits in the heavens laughs.

  41. The Lord holds them in derision.

  42. Then He will speak to them in His wrath and terrify them in His fury,

  43. saying,

  44. As for me, I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.

  45. I will tell of the decree.

  46. The Lord said to me,

  47. You are my son.

  48. Today I have begotten you.

  49. Ask of me and I will make the nations your heritage,

  50. and the ends of the earth your possession.

  51. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

  52. Now, therefore, O kings, be wise.

  53. Be warned, O rulers of the earth.

  54. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.

  55. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish in the way.

  56. For His wrath is quickly kindled.

  57. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.

  58. This is the Word of God.

  59. Let's bow once more and ask Him to bless the reading and the preaching of His Word.

  60. Lord, we thank You again for the privilege of opening up this Word,

  61. and now we ask again that You would move powerfully through the preaching of Your Word.

  62. We pray.

  63. In Christ's name.

  64. Amen.

  65. Amen.

  66. I made a mistake this week.

  67. In preparation for this sermon, I did something that I don't normally do,

  68. and I looked at the news.

  69. And I forced myself to read some of the headlines.

  70. Now, this is a dangerous thing, I know, for a pastor to do,

  71. because I recognize that each one of you here before me in this room,

  72. you all have your own political leanings, your own political opinions.

  73. Some of you share those.

  74. Some of you disagree on those.

  75. And that's okay.

  76. I've made a promise to you before that I will not preach a political sermon from this pulpit.

  77. But this is a political text, but maybe not in the way that you think.

  78. So I offer these observations without any commentary,

  79. without any agreeing, disagreeing, debating, taking sides whatsoever.

  80. I'll just tell you what I saw when I pulled up the news this week.

  81. You do with it what you will.

  82. I saw one former president indicted on over 30 criminal charges.

  83. I saw another current president facing articles of impeachment.

  84. I saw news of fatal shootings just this week in Tennessee and Texas, California, Maryland, and Ohio.

  85. I saw several articles for Pride Month here in the month of June advocating gender-affirming care for trans youth and children.

  86. And I saw pictures of the Pride Progress flag flying front and center over the entrance of the White House of the United States of America.

  87. And all of that, obviously, is just our country here.

  88. I don't know how anybody keeps up with this stuff.

  89. When you zoom out of our mess and you see the mess that's going on throughout the rest of the world,

  90. there are wars here and there.

  91. There are refugees fleeing their countries.

  92. There is corruption and chaos all over the map.

  93. And it's obvious to me, and it should be to you, that the entire world is in a constant state of turmoil and chaos.

  94. How should Christians navigate the chaos of this fallen world?

  95. Hopefully, you're not surprised what I'm going to tell you.

  96. That Christians should not get their worldview primarily from Fox News or CNN or the newspaper or any political television, political radio, any political outlet that you might prefer.

  97. Christians are those who get their view of the world from the Word of God.

  98. Amen?

  99. Amen.

  100. And what a treasure we have in the Word of God that allows us to see from God's own perspective,

  101. God's own view of all of the current events that happen within His own world.

  102. Psalm chapter 2, what we see this morning, Psalm chapter 2 gives us a lens through which to see the world and all the chaos in it from God's own perspective.

Psalms 2 chapter mention Psalms 2 chapter mention

  103. And it calls us to understand the political landscape of the world, not in terms of Republican versus Democrat,

  104. not in terms of America versus the rest of the world,

  105. but in terms of the kingdom of this world versus the kingdom of God.

  106. Psalm chapter 2, it shows us that there are ultimately two types of people in the world.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  107. There are those who, by the grace of God, recognize that God is king,

  108. and there are those who think that they are king.

  109. There are those who are in the kingdom of this world raging against the true king,

  110. and there are those who, by the grace of God, are in the kingdom of God resting in the true king.

  111. And the question for us as we read this passage this morning, Psalm chapter 2, is which one are you?

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  112. Which one do you act like?

  113. How do we respond to the lordship of King Jesus?

  114. We're going to see this psalm in four parts this morning.

  115. We're going to see the nations rage,

  116. the Lord reigns,

  117. God's people remember,

  118. and all people must respond.

  119. I see you writing, so I'm going to slowly say that again.

  120. I'm not going to lose anybody this morning.

  121. The nations rage,

  122. the Lord reigns,

  123. God's people remember,

  124. all people must respond.

  125. First, we see that the nations rage.

  126. Now look there to verse 1 with me,

  127. Psalm chapter 2, verse 1.

    Psalms 2:1

  128. David asks this question,

  129. Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

  130. The kings of the earth set themselves,

  131. and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and his anointed.

  132. And I want you to take note here, first of all,

  133. before we dive too far in,

  134. the connection between these first two psalms.

  135. Hopefully you can see them both together there in your Bible,

  136. Psalm 1 and Psalm 2.

  137. You're going to hear me say this a lot

  138. as we go through the book of psalms together.

  139. We've got 148 to go,

  140. and so you might hear this again.

  141. It's that we often treat the psalms as a greatest hits album

  142. when really they're more of a concept album.

  143. Do you know the difference?

  144. We often treat them as if they are just individual,

  145. stand-alone, excellent individual works

  146. when really, yes, they stand alone,

  147. but they speak to one another.

  148. They work together.

  149. They play off of each other.

  150. This is one book that communicates one message all throughout.

  151. So we have to take these psalms together.

  152. In Psalms 1 and Psalm 2, taken together,

  153. they serve as an introduction to the entire book of psalms.

  154. Last week you saw that the blessed man,

  155. look up to Psalm 1,

  156. the blessed man walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

  157. but instead he, what?

  158. He meditates on the law of God.

  159. And here in Psalm 2,

  160. we see that the kings of the earth are setting themselves up,

  161. the rulers of the earth are taking counsel together

  162. against the Lord and against His anointed,

  163. literally, the Messiah,

  164. and the nations and the peoples plot in vain.

  165. Literally, the wording here is the exact same.

  166. It says that the people meditate on vanity.

  167. You see the connections there between Psalm 1 and Psalm 2.

  168. You see the contrast that they're drawing out for us.

  169. This is the counsel of the wicked.

  170. This is the counsel that the blessed man will avoid.

  171. And what is the counsel?

  172. What do they say?

  173. Let us burst their bonds apart

  174. and cast away their cords from us.

  175. This is the mantra of wickedness.

  176. This is the national anthem of the kingdom of this world.

  177. Let us burst their bonds apart

  178. and cast away their cords from us.

  179. And it's amazing, isn't it,

  180. when you begin to see the world through this lens,

  181. how united the entire world actually is.

  182. Now, there is a profound unity

  183. in the rebellion of all the nations of the world

  184. against the Lord and His anointed.

  185. 195 countries in the world,

  186. over 17,000 individual people,

  187. groups in the world,

  188. over 7.8 billion people in the world,

  189. different cultures,

  190. different tastes,

  191. different preferences.

  192. But despite this incredible diversity,

  193. they are united, David says,

  194. in one thing.

  195. They want God off of His throne.

  196. They are united in rebellion.

  197. Now, you might hear this and say,

  198. well, that's ridiculous.

  199. North Korea and South Korea are not united.

  200. They hate each other.

  201. Russia and Ukraine are not united.

  202. But you're only seeing things on a horizontal level.

  203. Horizontally, they fight and they kill each other.

  204. They wage war against each other

  205. because at the end of the day,

  206. they want to be king and no one else.

  207. But they all agree,

  208. whether they realize it or not,

  209. they don't want God to be king.

  210. And so the common bond

  211. that unites all the nations of the earth

  212. is a vertical, Godward,

  213. spiritual raging and rebelling

  214. against the Lord and His anointed king.

  215. And the word for this is sin.

  216. You can imagine the United Nations

  217. gathering together,

  218. representatives from almost every organized nation

  219. in the world,

  220. planning and plotting,

  221. assembling resources,

  222. developing strategy.

  223. But from God's perspective,

  224. what are they scheming?

  225. Rebellion against the Lord and His anointed.

  226. Do we realize this is how the Lord sees

  227. all the rebellion in the world?

  228. It's not simply horizontal raging as we see it.

  229. It is a vertical, Godward attempt

  230. to break themselves free

  231. of the reign of God.

  232. I wonder if this is how we see

  233. the chaos of the world.

  234. This is how David understood it.

  235. Clearly, David was no doubt calling to mind

  236. all the many times that Solomon

  237. tried to pin him up against the wall

  238. with a spear.

  239. How Absalom, his son,

  240. tried to take away the kingdom.

  241. How the Philistines,

  242. the Moabites,

  243. the Amorites,

  244. the Ammonites,

  245. the Syrians,

  246. they all raged against him,

  247. different countries,

  248. different nations,

  249. different motives.

  250. All of them united

  251. in one pursuit

  252. to dethrone the reign

  253. of God's appointed king.

  254. He saw it not just horizontally

  255. as man against man,

  256. he understood it vertically

  257. as man against God

  258. and his appointed ruler.

  259. And I'm sad to say

  260. that in the past couple thousand years,

  261. I'm not sure much has changed.

  262. The kings,

  263. the rulers,

  264. the presidents,

  265. the people

  266. of all nations,

  267. including ours,

  268. rage against the Lord

  269. and his anointed,

  270. who we know

  271. is King Jesus.

  272. when nations

  273. such as ours

  274. endorse

  275. the type of

  276. sexual insanity

  277. that has been celebrated

  278. all month long,

  279. we have to understand

  280. it's not just rebellion

  281. on a horizontal

  282. man-to-man level.

  283. It's not just

  284. a political issue.

  285. This is an attempt

  286. to break themselves

  287. free

  288. from the law of God.

  289. And when we see it,

  290. like David,

  291. we ask,

  292. why?

  293. Why do the nations

  294. plot in vain?

  295. Here's the answer.

  296. It's because

  297. unless you have been saved

  298. by the grace of God

  299. and made citizens

  300. of his kingdom,

  301. you belong

  302. to another kingdom.

  303. You belong

  304. to the kingdom

  305. of this world.

  306. And the rallying cry

  307. of the kingdom

  308. of this world

  309. is God

  310. will not

  311. rule over me.

  312. This is the essence

  313. of sin.

  314. And we know

  315. that every one

  316. of us

  317. used to be

  318. a part

  319. of this kingdom.

  320. Every single one

  321. of us

  322. used to be a part

  323. of this same

  324. rebellion

  325. against the Lord

  326. and his anointed.

  327. But Christian,

  328. don't you know

  329. that you have been

  330. plucked out

  331. of belonging

  332. to this chaos?

  333. You're here.

  334. You still live

  335. in the middle of it.

  336. You see it every day.

  337. You're interacting

  338. with it.

  339. You're engaging

  340. with it.

  341. But you no longer

  342. belong to it.

  343. If by the grace

  344. of God

  345. you have been saved

  346. through faith

  347. in Jesus Christ,

  348. if by the grace

  349. of God

  350. you bowed the knee

  351. to King Jesus,

  352. do you know

  353. what that means?

  354. It means you no longer

  355. belong

  356. to the kingdom

  357. of this world.

  358. God has

  359. delivered you

  360. from the kingdom

  361. of darkness

  362. and transferred

  363. you now

  364. to the kingdom

  365. of his beloved

  366. son.

  367. You know what this means?

  368. It means now

  369. you no longer

  370. primarily identify

  371. as an American

  372. citizen.

  373. You now identify

  374. as a citizen

  375. of the kingdom

  376. of God

  377. who happens,

  378. just so happens,

  379. to live in this

  380. rebellious place

  381. called America

  382. as an exile

  383. here

  384. waiting

  385. for the true

  386. king.

  387. Your loyalty

  388. is not ultimately

  389. to any political

  390. party,

  391. your loyalty

  392. is not ultimately

  393. to the Republican

  394. party,

  395. is not to the

  396. Democratic party,

  397. your hope

  398. for an end

  399. to the social

  400. raging in our

  401. nation is not

  402. for any human

  403. political candidate

  404. to come and do

  405. what only Christ

  406. can do.

  407. Your identity

  408. and your hope

  409. are entirely

  410. in a coming

  411. king,

  412. in a coming

  413. kingdom.

  414. You realize

  415. you may be

  416. a citizen

  417. of America

  418. for a hundred

  419. years,

  420. max,

  421. if you have

  422. a good long

  423. life,

  424. but if you

  425. are in Christ

  426. you'll be a

  427. citizen of

  428. God's kingdom

  429. for all

  430. of eternity.

  431. Don't you think

  432. that ought to

  433. impact how we

  434. respond to the

  435. chaos around us?

  436. Don't you think

  437. that ought to

  438. impact how we

  439. think and

  440. engage,

  441. how we vote,

  442. how we react,

  443. how we talk

  444. about all the

  445. raging chaos

  446. in our nation?

  447. The nations

  448. rage against

  449. the Lord,

  450. but when we

  451. see the world

  452. from God's

  453. perspective,

  454. we'll see that

  455. all of this

  456. raging is in

  457. vain.

  458. Why?

  459. Because second,

  460. the Lord

  461. reigns.

  462. The Lord

  463. reigns.

  464. Look there

  465. to verse four.

  466. Here we see

  467. God's response

  468. to the rebellion

  469. of the world.

  470. Look what it

  471. says.

  472. He who sits

  473. in heaven

  474. laughs.

  475. He laughs.

  476. The Lord

  477. holds them

  478. in derision.

  479. I had to

  480. look up that

  481. word just to be

  482. sure I knew

  483. exactly what it

  484. meant.

  485. It means it's

  486. a mockery.

  487. It's a joke.

  488. He laughs it

  489. off as if it

  490. is nothing.

  491. For all the

  492. scheming and

  493. fighting and

  494. raging and

  495. rebelling,

  496. for as much as

  497. we tend to

  498. panic and

  499. freak out

  500. when things

  501. seem to fall

  502. apart in our

  503. world, guess

  504. what it does

  505. to God?

  506. Not a thing.

  507. When our

  508. president candidate

  509. doesn't get

  510. elected, when

  511. our stock market

  512. prices crash,

  513. when our nation

  514. seems to rage

  515. into war,

  516. all the

  517. thrashing about

  518. of our world

  519. cannot move

  520. our God

  521. one inch

  522. off of his

  523. throne.

  524. God

  525. what a

  526. stabilizing

  527. truth, isn't

  528. it?

  529. And when we

  530. see all the

  531. rebellion are

  532. all around us,

  533. when we turn on

  534. the news station

  535. and we see the

  536. mess in the

  537. world around us,

  538. how do we

  539. respond?

  540. With panic?

  541. With anger?

  542. With frustration?

  543. Or do we

  544. respond like

  545. those who know

  546. with confidence

  547. that no matter

  548. what happens

  549. here, that

  550. the Lord

  551. reigns?

  552. We believe

  553. that our

  554. God is in

  555. the heavens,

  556. he does all

  557. that he

  558. pleases,

  559. Psalm 115

  560. tells us.

  561. And we

  562. believe that

  563. the earth

  564. is the

  565. Lord's and

  566. the fullness

  567. thereof,

  568. as Psalm

  569. 24 tells

  570. us.

  571. And do you

  572. see the

  573. irony here?

  574. Do you

  575. see the

  576. reason why

  577. God laughs

  578. at the

  579. rebellion of

  580. the world?

  581. It doesn't

  582. seem too

  583. funny to

  584. me, but

  585. do you

  586. see the

  587. reason why

  588. God is

  589. laughing?

  590. It's because

  591. if anyone

  592. has anything

  593. at all,

  594. it is because

  595. God, the

  596. King, has

  597. given it to

  598. him.

  599. All life,

  600. all breath,

  601. everything is

  602. from God.

  603. It is God

  604. who appoints

  605. leaders.

  606. It is God

  607. who appoints

  608. presidents.

  609. It is God

  610. who puts any

  611. earthly ruler

  612. into place.

  613. Anyone who

  614. has any

  615. authority at

  616. all is

  617. given that

  618. authority by

  619. God.

  620. So how do

  621. you think

  622. God responds

  623. when they

  624. then use

  625. that God

  626. given authority

  627. to rebel

  628. upwards against

  629. him?

  630. When they

  631. use their

  632. God given

  633. brains and

  634. God given

  635. ability to

  636. think, to

  637. think and to

  638. plot up

  639. vanity against

  640. him?

  641. To use their

  642. God given

  643. strength, their

  644. God given

  645. wisdom to

  646. then plot and

  647. to turn the

  648. peoples against

  649. him, to lead

  650. them further

  651. and further

  652. and further

  653. into immorality,

  654. how does he

  655. respond?

  656. He laughs.

  657. It's a joke.

  658. It's like

  659. an angry

  660. baby.

  661. Maybe you

  662. remember these

  663. days.

  664. Changing a

  665. baby's diaper,

  666. a baby's upset

  667. at you,

  668. a baby's kicking

  669. and screaming

  670. and crying,

  671. doing everything

  672. he can to let

  673. you know he's

  674. not happy,

  675. and in his

  676. rage he might

  677. kick that diaper

  678. back up at you,

  679. it hits you in

  680. the hand,

  681. what does it

  682. do to you?

  683. Not a thing.

  684. Maybe if he's

  685. lucky he grabs

  686. a wipe,

  687. flutters down,

  688. gets you a

  689. little bit wet.

  690. At the end

  691. of the day,

  692. for all his

  693. raging,

  694. all of his

  695. tantrum,

  696. all of his

  697. anger,

  698. all of his

  699. tears,

  700. as you continue

  701. to care for

  702. him,

  703. provide for

  704. him,

  705. meet his

  706. needs,

  707. give him

  708. everything that

  709. he needs,

  710. all you

  711. can do

  712. is laugh.

  713. But that

  714. time of

  715. laughing,

  716. we see

  717. there in

  718. verse 5,

  719. it will

  720. not last

  721. forever.

  722. Look how

  723. quickly the

  724. tone changes

  725. here from

  726. verse 4

  727. to verse 5.

  728. Verse 4,

  729. God is

  730. laughing at

  731. their rebellion,

  732. but then

  733. verse 5,

  734. he lets us

  735. know that a

  736. time for

  737. laughing will

  738. soon be

  739. done.

  740. Then he

  741. will speak

  742. to them in

  743. his wrath

  744. and terrify

  745. them in

  746. his fury,

  747. saying,

  748. you can

  749. do whatever

  750. you like,

  751. you can

  752. appoint whatever

  753. leader that

  754. you want.

  755. As for me,

  756. I have set

  757. my king on

  758. Zion,

  759. my holy

  760. hill.

  761. You see,

  762. the kingdom

  763. of God is

  764. not a

  765. democracy,

  766. it's a

  767. theocracy.

  768. God says,

  769. I am the

  770. ruler of

  771. the world,

  772. you don't

  773. get a say

  774. in it,

  775. you can't

  776. vote me

  777. out,

  778. you can

  779. kick and

  780. scream all

  781. you want,

  782. you can

  783. rage and

  784. rebel all

  785. you want,

  786. but my

  787. king is

  788. going right

  789. there on

  790. my holy

  791. hill and

  792. he will

  793. reign forever.

  794. And when

  795. the kings

  796. of this

  797. earth lay

  798. eyes on

  799. him,

  800. then they

  801. will know

  802. that all

  803. of their

  804. raging and

  805. rebelling was

  806. in vain.

  807. I watched

  808. a video of

  809. a Mike

  810. Tyson fight

  811. this week.

  812. Y'all ever

  813. seen this

  814. man fight?

  815. I don't

  816. know why

  817. anyone would

  818. want to get

  819. in the ring

  820. with Mike

  821. Tyson.

  822. He was

  823. fighting Mitch

  824. Green.

  825. Mitch Green

  826. came out

  827. swinging with

  828. both fists,

  829. just running

  830. wild around

  831. the ring,

  832. trying his

  833. best.

  834. And you

  835. can,

  836. if you

  837. slow it

  838. down,

  839. see Mike

  840. Tyson

  841. smile.

  842. He smirks,

  843. dodges beneath

  844. another punch,

  845. dodges beneath

  846. another punch.

  847. He's toying

  848. with them,

  849. laughs.

  850. He can't

  851. catch them.

  852. But then the

  853. moment comes

  854. when Mike

  855. Tyson stops

  856. smiling,

  857. and he

  858. decides he's

  859. going to put

  860. an end to

  861. the fight.

  862. I don't

  863. have to

  864. tell you

  865. how that

  866. fight

  867. ended.

  868. I don't

  869. have to

  870. tell you

  871. how this

  872. fight will

  873. end.

  874. It's not

  875. a fight.

  876. The raging

  877. and the

  878. rebelling of

  879. all the

  880. world,

  881. all the

  882. world is

  883. engaged in

  884. a pointless,

  885. vain,

  886. empty fight

  887. against the

  888. almighty king

  889. of kings,

  890. and when he

  891. decides that

  892. he's had

  893. enough,

  894. he will put

  895. an end to

  896. it.

  897. our

  898. confidence,

  899. Christian,

  900. in the

  901. face of

  902. all the

  903. wild

  904. rebellion

  905. of this

  906. present

  907. age,

  908. is that

  909. no matter

  910. what

  911. happens,

  912. our God

  913. is on

  914. his throne.

  915. And the

  916. day will

  917. come when

  918. he will

  919. return and

  920. will address

  921. every attempt

  922. to dethrone

  923. him.

  924. But what

  925. do we do

  926. as we

  927. wait?

  928. What do

  929. Christians do

  930. as we

  931. wait for

  932. that day?

  933. We do as

  934. David does

  935. here in

  936. verses 7

  937. through 9.

  938. We

  939. remember.

  940. We

  941. remember

  942. the promises

  943. of God.

  944. The nations

  945. rage,

  946. the Lord

  947. reigns,

  948. and third,

  949. God's

  950. people

  951. remember

  952. God's

  953. promises.

  954. Look there

  955. to verse

  956. 7.

  957. Where does

  958. David turn

  959. when he's

  960. faced with

  961. the wickedness

  962. of his

  963. day?

  964. He recites

  965. the promises

  966. of God.

  967. He says,

  968. I will tell

  969. of the decree.

  970. the Lord

  971. said to me,

  972. you are

  973. my son.

  974. Today I

  975. have

  976. begotten

  977. you.

  978. Ask of

  979. me and

  980. I will

  981. make the

  982. nations

  983. your

  984. heritage

  985. and the

  986. ends

  987. of the

  988. earth

  989. your

  990. possession.

  991. You

  992. shall

  993. break

  994. them

  995. with a

  996. rod

  997. of

  998. iron

  999. and

  1000. dash

  1001. them

  1002. in

  1003. pieces

  1004. like a

  1005. potter's

  1006. vessel.

  1007. He's

  1008. remembering

  1009. the promises

  1010. that God

  1011. has made

  1012. him.

  1013. This

  1014. decree,

  1015. this

  1016. covenant

  1017. God

  1018. had promised

  1019. David

  1020. in 2

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  1021. Samuel

  1022. chapter 7.

  1023. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  1024. chapter 7.

  1025. That a

  1026. king would

  1027. come from

  1028. his line.

  1029. And that

  1030. God would

  1031. single-handedly

  1032. make it so

  1033. that he

  1034. would establish

  1035. the throne

  1036. of this

  1037. kingdom

  1038. forever.

  1039. This was

  1040. David's

  1041. hope.

  1042. It was the

  1043. hope of all

  1044. of Israel.

  1045. They were

  1046. longing for

  1047. this ruling

  1048. king and

  1049. ultimately

  1050. it's all

  1051. of our

  1052. hope.

  1053. This was

  1054. a promise

  1055. of a

  1056. forever

  1057. king from

  1058. the line

  1059. of David

  1060. who will

  1061. come to

  1062. reign and

  1063. to rule.

  1064. This was

  1065. David's

  1066. confidence.

  1067. This is

  1068. what rooted

  1069. him when

  1070. all the

  1071. world around

  1072. him was

  1073. tossing and

  1074. turning and

  1075. raging.

  1076. And so it

  1077. is with

  1078. us,

  1079. Christian,

  1080. the only

  1081. way to

  1082. persevere

  1083. through the

  1084. chaos of

  1085. this world

  1086. is to

  1087. cling to

  1088. the promises

  1089. of God.

  1090. And as

  1091. David looked

  1092. forward with

  1093. wonder,

  1094. wondering,

  1095. believing,

  1096. trusting,

  1097. but wondering

  1098. about these

  1099. promises of

  1100. God, who

  1101. will this

  1102. king be?

  1103. We look

  1104. backwards,

  1105. believing and

  1106. trusting with

  1107. confidence that

  1108. all the

  1109. promises of

  1110. God are

  1111. fulfilled in

  1112. Jesus Christ,

  1113. the son of

  1114. David.

  1115. Don't you

  1116. love living on

  1117. this side of

  1118. the cross?

  1119. With a

  1120. finished Bible

  1121. in hand that

  1122. helps us

  1123. understand these

  1124. psalms in

  1125. light of the

  1126. Messiah,

  1127. Jesus Christ.

  1128. Christ, I

  1129. want you to

  1130. see two

  1131. places in

  1132. the book

  1133. of Acts.

  1134. Two places

  1135. where the

  1136. apostles, they

  1137. show us

  1138. Christ in

  1139. Psalm chapter

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  1140. 2.

  1141. First, Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1142. chapter 4, and

  1143. then Acts

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  1144. chapter 13.

  1145. Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1146. 4.

  1147. The passage that

  1148. was read for us

  1149. earlier this

  1150. morning, he

  1151. says,

  1152. The sovereign

  1153. Lord who

  1154. made the

  1155. heaven and

  1156. the earth and

  1157. the sea and

  1158. everything in

  1159. them, who

  1160. through the

  1161. mouth of our

  1162. father David,

  1163. your servant,

  1164. said by the

  1165. Holy Spirit,

  1166. why did the

  1167. nations rage

  1168. and the

  1169. peoples plot

  1170. in vain?

  1171. The kings of

  1172. the earth set

  1173. themselves and

  1174. the rulers were

  1175. gathered together

  1176. against the

  1177. Lord and his

  1178. anointed.

  1179. For truly in

  1180. this city,

  1181. they were

  1182. gathered together

  1183. against your

  1184. holy servant

  1185. Jesus, whom

  1186. you appointed,

  1187. both Herod and

  1188. Pontius Pilate,

  1189. along with the

  1190. Gentiles and

  1191. the peoples of

  1192. Israel, to do

  1193. whatever your

  1194. hand and your

  1195. plan had

  1196. predestined to

  1197. take place.

  1198. See, the

  1199. apostles read

  1200. Psalm 2, and

  1201. they understood

  1202. that the raging

  1203. of the nations

  1204. against the

  1205. Lord and

  1206. against his

  1207. Messiah was

  1208. most clearly

  1209. seen in the

  1210. crucifixion of

  1211. the king,

  1212. Jesus Christ.

  1213. They raged

  1214. against the

  1215. Lord's

  1216. anointed.

  1217. They fought

  1218. against him.

  1219. His words

  1220. went over

  1221. them like

  1222. ropes, like

  1223. cords, and

  1224. they tried and

  1225. tried and

  1226. tried to

  1227. burst themselves

  1228. free, and

  1229. when they

  1230. finally had

  1231. enough, they

  1232. killed him.

  1233. But Acts

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  1234. chapter 13

  1235. tells us that

  1236. all of it

  1237. was in vain.

  1238. All of it

  1239. was in vain.

  1240. Acts chapter 13,

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  1241. and though they

  1242. found in him

  1243. no guilt

  1244. worthy of

  1245. death, they

  1246. asked Pilate to

  1247. have him

  1248. executed.

  1249. and when

  1250. they had

  1251. carried out

  1252. all that

  1253. was written

  1254. of him,

  1255. they took

  1256. him down

  1257. from the

  1258. tree and

  1259. laid him

  1260. in a

  1261. tomb.

  1262. But God

  1263. raised him

  1264. from the

  1265. dead.

  1266. And for

  1267. many days he

  1268. appeared to

  1269. those who

  1270. had come up

  1271. with him from

  1272. Galilee to

  1273. Jerusalem, who

  1274. are now witnesses

  1275. to the people.

  1276. And we bring

  1277. you the good

  1278. news that what

  1279. God promised

  1280. to the

  1281. fathers, this

  1282. he has

  1283. fulfilled to

  1284. us, their

  1285. children, by

  1286. raising Jesus.

  1287. As also it is

  1288. written in the

  1289. second psalm,

  1290. you are my

  1291. son, today I

  1292. have begotten

  1293. you.

  1294. Let's put it

  1295. all together

  1296. here.

  1297. Jesus endured

  1298. the raging

  1299. of the

  1300. nations.

  1301. He took

  1302. their best

  1303. shot, but

  1304. all of it

  1305. was in

  1306. vain.

  1307. He rose to

  1308. prove that

  1309. all of God's

  1310. promises are

  1311. true in

  1312. him.

  1313. We read

  1314. these promises

  1315. in Psalm

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  1316. chapter 2 in

  1317. light of

  1318. Jesus Christ.

  1319. God decrees

  1320. Jesus, you

  1321. are my son,

  1322. today I have

  1323. begotten you.

  1324. Adam was the

  1325. son of God, but

  1326. he failed.

  1327. Israel was

  1328. called the

  1329. son of God, but

  1330. they failed.

  1331. King Jesus

  1332. is the true

  1333. and better

  1334. Adam.

  1335. King Jesus

  1336. is the true

  1337. and better

  1338. Israel.

  1339. King Jesus

  1340. is the true

  1341. and perfect

  1342. son of

  1343. God.

  1344. And in

  1345. him, under

  1346. his reign, you

  1347. and I can be

  1348. called sons and

  1349. daughters of

  1350. God.

  1351. That's the

  1352. promise to us

  1353. in Christ.

  1354. God decrees the

  1355. nations are the

  1356. heritage of

  1357. Christ.

  1358. The ends of the

  1359. earth are his

  1360. possession.

  1361. All of it is

  1362. his.

  1363. Jesus has

  1364. universal sovereignty

  1365. over all the

  1366. nations of the

  1367. earth.

  1368. earth.

  1369. So where we

  1370. see wickedness

  1371. in our own

  1372. heart, where

  1373. we see wickedness

  1374. in our own

  1375. nation, where

  1376. we see wickedness

  1377. and rebellion

  1378. in any place in

  1379. all of creation,

  1380. we pray that he

  1381. would replace our

  1382. rebellion with

  1383. his reign.

  1384. Church, you

  1385. know, this is

  1386. why we go to

  1387. the uttermost

  1388. ends of the

  1389. earth to

  1390. proclaim the

  1391. name of

  1392. Jesus.

  1393. It's because we

  1394. believe all of

  1395. it belongs to

  1396. him.

  1397. All of it is

  1398. for him, and

  1399. all of it must

  1400. be subjected to

  1401. his reign.

  1402. God decrees

  1403. Jesus is the

  1404. judge of all.

  1405. There is no

  1406. doubt as to

  1407. how this will

  1408. end for those

  1409. who rebel against

  1410. him, is there?

  1411. Like a piece

  1412. of pottery

  1413. rebelling against

  1414. an iron rod,

  1415. the judgment

  1416. that awaits

  1417. the nations

  1418. is certain

  1419. and it is

  1420. imminent.

  1421. You shall

  1422. break them

  1423. with a rod

  1424. of iron and

  1425. dash them in

  1426. pieces like a

  1427. potter's vessel.

  1428. And so we

  1429. pray, we

  1430. pray, we

  1431. pray, we

  1432. pray that the

  1433. nations would

  1434. repent, that

  1435. we would

  1436. repent, and

  1437. that Christ

  1438. would return

  1439. quickly to

  1440. set all

  1441. things right.

  1442. Church, do

  1443. you see how

  1444. these promises

  1445. align our

  1446. souls?

  1447. In the midst

  1448. of chaos, do

  1449. you see how

  1450. unlike all of

  1451. the many broken

  1452. campaign promises

  1453. that we hear

  1454. every several

  1455. years from

  1456. politicians, from

  1457. men and women

  1458. who promise big

  1459. things and they

  1460. never come

  1461. through, the

  1462. word of God

  1463. has promised

  1464. you unshakable

  1465. certainty in

  1466. the reign and

  1467. rule of King

  1468. Jesus.

  1469. God's promises

  1470. are anchors for

  1471. us when we're

  1472. tossed about in

  1473. the wickedness of

  1474. this present

  1475. evil age.

  1476. God's people

  1477. remember God's

  1478. promises and

  1479. finally,

  1480. ultimately,

  1481. all people must

  1482. respond.

  1483. all people

  1484. must respond

  1485. to the

  1486. lordship of

  1487. Christ.

  1488. And this is

  1489. what David

  1490. calls us to

  1491. do here in

  1492. verse 10.

  1493. Look there

  1494. with me.

  1495. It's very

  1496. clear.

  1497. Now, therefore,

  1498. in light of all

  1499. we've heard, in

  1500. light of the

  1501. universal reign of

  1502. Christ, in

  1503. light of the

  1504. vanity of your

  1505. rebellion,

  1506. therefore, O

  1507. kings, be

  1508. wise, be

  1509. warned, O

  1510. rulers of the

  1511. earth, serve

  1512. the Lord with

  1513. fear, rejoice

  1514. with trembling,

  1515. kiss the

  1516. sun, lest he

  1517. be angry and

  1518. you perish in

  1519. the way, for

  1520. his wrath is

  1521. quickly kindled.

  1522. So let's close

  1523. here with this

  1524. call for all of

  1525. us to respond.

  1526. If you are not

  1527. a believer, if

  1528. you're part of

  1529. the rebellion, if

  1530. you do not know

  1531. the Lord, if you

  1532. have not yet

  1533. bowed the knee

  1534. to him, then

  1535. your response to

  1536. the passage like

  1537. this is to

  1538. repent.

  1539. Jesus Christ

  1540. alone is owed

  1541. all honor and

  1542. all respect and

  1543. all service and

  1544. all submission and

  1545. all worship.

  1546. And the fact is,

  1547. if you will not

  1548. honor the

  1549. son, then you

  1550. will honor

  1551. something or

  1552. someone else.

  1553. We are never

  1554. neutral.

  1555. we are all

  1556. honoring someone.

  1557. All of us are

  1558. kissing someone.

  1559. We're kissing the

  1560. son or we're

  1561. bowing the knee

  1562. honoring someone

  1563. else, either to

  1564. the creator or to

  1565. the creation.

  1566. And Jesus will not

  1567. stand to let the

  1568. honor that is due

  1569. to him and him

  1570. alone be given to

  1571. anyone or anything

  1572. else.

  1573. Isaiah 42, verse

    Isaiah 42:8

  1574. 8, he says,

  1575. I am the

  1576. Lord, that is

  1577. my name.

  1578. My glory I give

  1579. to no other, nor

  1580. my praise to

  1581. carved idols.

  1582. This is why it

  1583. calls us to

  1584. serve him with

  1585. fear and to

  1586. rejoice with

  1587. trembling.

  1588. It's because all

  1589. of us, every one

  1590. of us, is prone

  1591. to wonder and

  1592. prone to give

  1593. our honor, to

  1594. give our love, to

  1595. give our service

  1596. to lesser things

  1597. when King Jesus

  1598. is the one who

  1599. demands it all.

  1600. But the time is

  1601. coming when the

  1602. wrath of the

  1603. Lord will be

  1604. quickly kindled

  1605. and that time of

  1606. laughing will stop

  1607. and the time of

  1608. his wrath will

  1609. begin.

  1610. Now this is,

  1611. for all of us,

  1612. a sobering

  1613. warning.

  1614. Do not take

  1615. too light a

  1616. view of your

  1617. sin.

  1618. Do not take

  1619. too light a

  1620. view of his

  1621. holiness.

  1622. Examine

  1623. yourselves this

  1624. day.

  1625. See if you're

  1626. walking in any

  1627. unrepentant sin.

  1628. Examine yourselves

  1629. and see if there's

  1630. any corner of

  1631. your heart that

  1632. remains in

  1633. rebellion against

  1634. the reign of

  1635. the Lord.

  1636. Serve him with

  1637. fear and rejoice

  1638. with trembling.

  1639. You know, the

  1640. most terrible

  1641. force in all the

  1642. universe against

  1643. a sinner is the

  1644. holiness of the

  1645. Lord.

  1646. But for the

  1647. believer, there's

  1648. hope.

  1649. Not in our

  1650. goodness, not in

  1651. our strength, not

  1652. in our ability, but

  1653. in the goodness of

  1654. King Jesus.

  1655. Listen to me here

  1656. because this is the

  1657. good news of the

  1658. gospel.

  1659. We know that God

  1660. in all of his

  1661. holiness is the

  1662. most dangerous

  1663. force in all the

  1664. universe for any

  1665. who rebel against

  1666. him, but we

  1667. praise God that

  1668. God and his

  1669. holiness is also

  1670. the safest place in

  1671. the universe for

  1672. all who take

  1673. refuge in him.

  1674. The good news of

  1675. the gospel is that

  1676. God himself brings

  1677. us into the

  1678. blessing of God by

  1679. putting all of the

  1680. force of his

  1681. holiness and power

  1682. and his glory in

  1683. us and for us

  1684. instead of against

  1685. us.

  1686. Because he has

  1687. judged your

  1688. rebellion in

  1689. Christ on the

  1690. cross, there is

  1691. no judgment left

  1692. for you to bear,

  1693. for you who take

  1694. refuge in him.

  1695. And so we look

  1696. forward to the

  1697. day of his

  1698. return, not with

  1699. fear, not with

  1700. anxiety, but with

  1701. eagerness because

  1702. we know by the

  1703. grace of God we

  1704. could never be more

  1705. safe than in the

  1706. presence of our

  1707. king.

  1708. This is where the

  1709. psalm ends, isn't

  1710. it?

  1711. It concludes with

  1712. this line of hope

  1713. and blessing.

  1714. Blessed are all

  1715. those who take

  1716. refuge in the

  1717. king.

  1718. Are you taking

  1719. refuge in him?

  1720. Right now?

  1721. There are two

  1722. types of people in

  1723. the world, church.

  1724. There are those

  1725. who belong to the

  1726. kingdom of this

  1727. world and those

  1728. who belong to the

  1729. kingdom of God.

  1730. Those who try to

  1731. cast off his

  1732. authority and those

  1733. who crave it, who

  1734. long for it.

  1735. There are those who

  1736. seek life and

  1737. freedom from God

  1738. and those who seek

  1739. life and peace and

  1740. freedom in God

  1741. himself.

  1742. Those who fear his

  1743. coming and those who

  1744. say with eagerness,

  1745. come Lord Jesus.

  1746. Those who rebel

  1747. against him and

  1748. those who take

  1749. refuge in him.

  1750. Which one are you?

  1751. For the believer,

  1752. our response now and

  1753. always, the words of

  1754. Psalm 46.

1755. God is our refuge and

  1756. strength, a very

  1757. present help in

  1758. trouble.

  1759. Therefore, we will

  1760. not fear, though the

  1761. earth gives way.

  1762. Though the mountains

  1763. be moved into the

  1764. heart of the sea,

  1765. though those waters

  1766. roar and foam,

  1767. though the mountains

  1768. tremble at its

  1769. swelling, we rest in

  1770. the reign of the

  1771. king.

  1772. Let's pray.

  1773. Amen.

  1774. God, we thank you

  1775. for this unshakable

  1776. certainty that despite

  1777. the chaos all around

1778. us, Lord, this is our

  1779. hope that the Lord

  1780. Jesus reigns and rules

  1781. over all.

1782. And that if we know

1783. him by faith, if you

  1784. brought us into his

  1785. kingdom, Lord, we have

  1786. nothing to fear.

  1787. There's nothing but

  1788. goodness and mercy that

  1789. follows us all the

1790. day of our life and we

  1791. will dwell in the

  1792. house of our Lord

  1793. forever.

  1794. That's our hope.

1795. And we pray that you

  1796. would deepen our

  1797. trust, deepen our

  1798. confidence in the

  1799. reign of King Jesus,

  1800. we ask in Christ's

  1801. name.

  1802. Amen.
