  1. Let's open up our Bibles to the book of Psalms.

  2. Normally it's our practice here at Seawee Bay to preach through books of the Bible.

  3. We were in a series in the book of John, and we'll pick that back up, Lord willing, in the fall.

  4. But for the summer, we're spending some time together in the Psalms.

  5. And this morning we've made it to Psalm chapter 5.

    Psalms 5 chapter mention

  6. So if you're using the Pew Bibles there in front of you, if you didn't bring your own Bible,

  7. I believe you can find this passage on page 419 of the Pew Bible there in front of you.

  8. But we want you to have God's Word open in front of you and look to what He says as we read it together.

  9. So if you would, follow along with me as I read Psalm chapter 5.

    Psalms 5 chapter mention

  10. This is a Psalm of David. He says,

  11. Give ear to my words, O Lord. Consider my groaning.

  12. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God.

  13. For to you do I pray.

  14. O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice.

  15. In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

  16. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness.

  17. Evil may not dwell with you.

  18. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes.

  19. You hate all evildoers.

  20. You destroy those who speak lies.

  21. The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

  22. But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.

  23. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you.

  24. Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies.

  25. Make your way straight before me.

  26. For there is no truth in their mouth.

  27. Their inmost self is destruction.

  28. Their throat is an open grave.

  29. They flatter with their tongue.

  30. Make them bear their guilt, O God.

  31. Let them fall by their own counsels.

  32. Because of the abundance of their transgressions, cast them out.

  33. For they have rebelled against you.

  34. But let all who take refuge in you rejoice.

  35. Let them ever sing for joy.

  36. And spread your protection over them.

  37. That those who love your name may exult in you.

  38. For you bless the righteous, O Lord.

  39. You cover him with favor as with a shield.

  40. Amen.

  41. The grass withers and the flower fades.

  42. But God's eternal, perfect, beautiful word stands forever.

  43. Would you bow with me once more as we pray?

  44. Lord, I cannot begin to know the various sufferings and trials and difficulties that are represented in this room.

  45. But you do.

  46. And so we pray now as we open up this psalm of suffering.

  47. This psalm of groaning.

  48. Lord, that you would comfort us with your presence.

  49. And with the hope that can only be found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  50. We pray in his glorious name.

  51. Amen.

  52. How do believers respond in the face of danger?

  53. This is the question that we've been taking up week after week after week from the psalms over the past several weeks.

  54. And here as we make it to Psalm chapter 5, it is no different.

    Psalms 5 chapter mention

  55. David is still facing threats, still facing trials.

  56. I believe that he is still on the run from Absalom, his son, and the army with him.

  57. And I thought, you know, just for a change of pace this morning, we would quote three different prosperity teachers to hear what they might say about how we should respond to the dangers in our lives.

  58. These are our prosperity gospel teachers.

  59. The prosperity gospel, you may be well aware, is a false teaching that tells us that believers should have really no difficulties and no dangers, no trials.

  60. And if we just simply have enough faith, then we'll live a life of health, wealth, victory, happiness, and everything will be well.

  61. I'm willing to bet that we've seen enough just four chapters into the book of Psalms by this point to not listen to anything that these people have to say.

  62. All right, so let's take a look at three of them.

  63. Creflo Dollar from My Stomping Grounds.

  64. Creflo Dollar says,

  65. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it?

  66. Yet here in Psalm chapter 5, David trusts God and he groans.

    Psalms 5 chapter mention

  67. He trusts God and he cries out day and night.

  68. He is irritated by the disturbing circumstances around him.

  69. Number two, Joseph Prince.

  70. He says,

  71. You are destined to reign in life.

  72. You are called by God, the Lord, to be a success, to enjoy wealth, to enjoy health, and to enjoy a life of victory.

  73. It is not the Lord's desire that you live a life of defeat, poverty, and failure.

  74. But here, David is on the run from his son.

  75. Once again, he's in danger.

  76. He's in turmoil.

  77. He's in trials.

  78. His throne has been ripped away from him.

  79. He's been torn out of his city.

  80. His entire life is in shambles.

  81. This is not a life of comfort and victory.

  82. Last one.

  83. Joel Osteen, he says,

  84. That difficulty is not there to defeat you.

  85. It is there to promote you.

  86. You can handle it.

  87. Take hold of your strength.

  88. But here, of course, David hasn't taken hold of his strength.

  89. Has he?

  90. What's he doing?

  91. He's taking hold, trusting in the strength of the Lord.

  92. He's responding as believers do in the face of danger and looking to the strength of God.

  93. You know, this type of false prosperity teaching, it sells books.

  94. It draws crowds.

  95. It's very popular.

  96. But it simply doesn't fit well with the testimony of Scripture.

  97. In fact, it doesn't fit well with the message of our passage this morning.

  98. You know, the book of Psalms, one of the reasons why we are drawn to the book of Psalms,

  99. one of the reasons why we love this book is because it gives us an honest picture,

  100. an honest look at the sufferings and the trials and the difficulties of life.

  101. The Psalms give us bad news and good news, and we'll see both this morning.

  102. The bad news is that the life of a believer is filled with groaning.

  103. The life of a believer is filled with groaning.

  104. But the good news is that we groan with hope in the Lord.

  105. So this morning, what I want to do is to let God's Word equip us to groan as those who have hope.

  106. To groan as David is groaning here in this psalm.

  107. So this morning, we're going to see four ways that believers groan in suffering.

  108. This will be our outline this morning.

  109. If you're taking notes, we'll see four ways believers groan in suffering.

  110. First, believers groan with frequency.

  111. Believers groan with frequency.

  112. Look with me again to verse 1.

  113. David says,

  114. It's clear that David is once again in distress.

  115. We've seen over the past several weeks that David is on the run from his son Absalom,

  116. and the Lord has sustained him through the night.

  117. Last week, we saw Psalm chapter 4.

    Psalms 4 chapter mention

  118. He laid down and slept in peace.

  119. And now, Psalm chapter 5, he wakes up again.

    Psalms 5 chapter mention

  120. And once again, what does he do?

  121. First thing in the morning, he groans.

  122. Cries out to the Lord.

  123. Now, if indeed this is the same event as I believe Psalms 3 through 9 are all focused around this event with Absalom,

  124. I think it's important for us to realize that David's prayer for deliverance,

  125. his lamenting of his situation, his groaning to the Lord, his crying out to God,

  126. is not just a one-time event.

  127. This is constant, frequent, regular groaning, praying for deliverance, calling out to the Lord.

  128. It's day and night.

  129. In fact, I wonder if you've noticed the pattern here in the book of Psalms over the past several weeks.

  130. Psalms 1 and 2 kind of gives us the introduction to the whole book of Psalms.

  131. And then Psalm 3 was a morning prayer.

  132. Psalm 4 was an evening prayer.

  133. Psalm 5 this morning is another morning prayer.

  134. In the morning, he calls out to the Lord.

  135. Lord willing, next week, Psalm chapter 6, we'll see another evening prayer.

    Psalms 6 chapter mention

  136. See, there's a rhythm here of frequent suffering, frequent groaning, frequent calling out to the name of the Lord.

  137. Day and night, day and night, day and night.

  138. He wakes up again here.

  139. The Lord has sustained him through the night, but the issue is still there.

  140. And because the suffering is still there, he is still groaning.

  141. As we read through the Psalms like this, Psalms that have groaning and calling out to the Lord like this,

  142. we should ask ourselves, is this how we call out to the Lord?

  143. Is this how we speak with him?

  144. Believers are those who groan constantly to the Lord.

  145. Are you crying out to the Lord now because of pain?

  146. Because of weakness in your flesh?

  147. Because of sickness?

  148. Because of illness?

  149. Are you groaning and crying out because of loss?

  150. Because of grief?

  151. Are you groaning and crying out to the Lord because of your sin?

  152. We have to realize, Christian, that this type of groaning and crying out to the Lord

  153. is not abnormal for the believer.

  154. The groaning and pain and suffering, I'll be honest with you,

  155. are a normal part of the believer's life on this side of eternity.

  156. All of us, I don't know the issues that you're facing in the room, not all of them,

  157. but I do know that all of us face all sorts of various trials.

  158. Some may be trials of attack like David is facing here.

  159. Others, trials of loss and grief, trials of sickness, trials of temptation, trials of sin.

  160. And all of them ought to lead us to groan and to cry out to the Lord,

  161. Lord, save me from this.

  162. Lord, look at what's happening here.

  163. Lord, help me.

  164. Day and night, we should groan and cry out to the Lord.

  165. You know, that is good and normal for a believer.

  166. If we're not grieved by anything in our life,

  167. if we look around us, the world that we live in as broken as it is,

  168. if we're not groaning for the Lord to act,

  169. if we look within us and notice our own sin

  170. and we're comfortable with everything in our life,

  171. we're not grieved by our own sin,

  172. we're not groaning and crying out,

  173. who will deliver me from this body of death?

  174. You know, if we're not groaning to the Lord frequently,

  175. something might be wrong.

  176. Believers groan regularly.

  177. I want you to hear me on this very clearly.

  178. Please don't listen to anyone

  179. who would tell you that having a stronger faith

  180. would mean less suffering here in this life.

  181. Don't listen to anyone who would tell you

  182. that if you just believe, just trust,

  183. just have a stronger faith

  184. that you would be relieved of your groaning in this life.

  185. And don't listen to anyone who would tell you

  186. that you're not allowed to groan in your suffering.

  187. What do I mean by that?

  188. Well, I think if you're like me,

  189. we all try to be tough, don't we?

  190. And we tend to believe that the Lord is most pleased with us

  191. when we just tough it out.

  192. We just grit and bear it.

  193. Men especially, I'm talking to you,

  194. I'm talking to myself,

  195. we don't want to whine.

  196. We don't want to seem weak.

  197. We don't want to seem less than.

  198. But listen,

  199. our groaning to God in suffering

  200. is not a sign of weakness.

  201. Our groaning out to the Lord in suffering

  202. is not a sign of lack of faith in God.

  203. On the contrary,

  204. we honor God

  205. when we cry out to Him in faith

  206. in the midst of our trials.

  207. We need to feel the freedom to lament.

  208. Not grumbling and faithless complaining

  209. like the Israelites in the wilderness,

  210. but faithful groaning,

  211. groaning in faith to the Lord.

  212. There's an eternity of difference here.

  213. We're going to see this more

  214. as we go through the book of Psalms,

  215. but do you realize that

  216. over one-third of the book of Psalms is lament?

  217. Over one-third of the book of Psalms,

  218. the author is calling God's attention

  219. to some particular trial,

  220. some particular issue,

  221. some particular enemy,

  222. some particular difficulty,

  223. calling God's attention to the trials

  224. and groaning to the Lord,

  225. asking Him to do something about it.

  226. We need to recover a sense of freedom

  227. to groan and cry out to the Lord.

  228. His frequent groaning

  229. isn't a demonstration of lack of faith,

  230. it's a demonstration

  231. of strong, deep trust in the Lord

  232. to do what only God can do.

  233. The Psalms,

  234. they invite us to cry out to God,

  235. not in bitterness,

  236. not in despair,

  237. but in faith in a good God

  238. who hears our cries.

  239. Believers groan frequently.

  240. Not only this.

  241. Second,

  242. believers groan with confidence.

  243. Believers groan with confidence.

  244. Let me ask you something.

  245. What makes a believer confident

  246. in the face of trials?

  247. When trials, temptations,

  248. suffering comes into your life,

  249. what is the source of your confidence?

  250. What will you cling to?

  251. For the believer,

  252. the believer's confidence

  253. in the face of suffering

  254. is the character of God.

  255. It's the character of God.

  256. Look there at what David says here.

  257. King David, ruler of God's people,

  258. what does he say in verse 2?

  259. He cries out to God and he says,

  260. you give attention to the sound of my cry,

  261. my King and my God.

  262. He calls out to God,

  263. his God,

  264. his Lord,

  265. his covenant God,

  266. the covenant faithful God.

  267. His confidence is in the person

  268. and the character of God,

  269. his God.

  270. It's like a child

  271. who falls down on the playground

  272. and scrapes his knee.

  273. What happens?

  274. Where do they turn right away?

  275. To mom or dad?

  276. Out of all the people there

  277. on the playground,

  278. many kids,

  279. many parents,

  280. they run straight to mom,

  281. run straight to dad.

  282. Why?

  283. Because they trust

  284. in the character

  285. of mom and dad.

  286. They know that

  287. they are there

  288. to protect them,

  289. that they are there

  290. to serve them,

  291. that they love them.

  292. There's relational dependence

  293. and trust and love there.

  294. And so it is with David.

  295. This is David's confidence here.

  296. His confidence

  297. in the face of suffering

  298. is the character of God.

  299. Look there to verses 4-6.

  300. 4-6

  301. because David gives

  302. four statements

  303. of confidence here.

  304. All of them

  305. rooted in God's

  306. holy character.

  307. And I'll be honest,

  308. some of these are hard

  309. for us to swallow.

  310. Some of these statements

  311. of confidence

  312. are hard for us to hear.

  313. Some of these

  314. will not sell books,

  315. it will not draw crowds,

  316. but when we understand them,

  317. these are the root

  318. of our confidence

  319. in suffering.

  320. So look there

  321. to verse 4.

  322. He groans with confidence

  323. because, number one,

  324. truth number one,

  325. because God is holy.

  326. Because God is holy.

  327. What does he say

  328. in verse 4?

  329. You are not a God

  330. who delights

  331. in wickedness.

  332. David's confidence

  333. is rooted

  334. in the holiness

  335. of God.

  336. When we look

  337. at all the evil

  338. around us,

  339. the evil inside of us,

  340. wicked acts against us,

  341. how can we be confident

  342. that God will deal with it?

  343. It's because God is holy.

  344. And so we can call out

  345. to God in confidence

  346. because we know

  347. that as much

  348. as it displeases us,

  349. it really does not

  350. please Him.

  351. Our confidence

  352. is that God

  353. will deal with wickedness

  354. because God is holy.

  355. It's in His holy character.

  356. And so because of this

  357. second statement,

  358. we can be confident

  359. with David

  360. that the wicked

  361. will not dwell

  362. with God.

  363. The wicked

  364. will not dwell

  365. with God.

  366. He says,

  367. evil may not dwell

  368. with you.

  369. This is what

  370. Psalm chapter 1

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  371. has already laid out

  372. for us, isn't it?

  373. The wicked

  374. will not stand

  375. in the judgment

  376. nor sinners

  377. in the congregation

  378. of the righteous.

  379. David is essentially

  380. praying back

  381. the truth of Psalm 1

  382. back to God

  383. and affirming

  384. this is who you are.

  385. This is what you've said.

  386. This is my confidence.

  387. So whatever success

  388. the wicked may have

  389. here and now,

  390. whatever victory

  391. it may seem like

  392. they've gained

  393. here and now,

  394. at the end of the day,

  395. with confidence,

  396. David prays,

  397. the wicked

  398. will not dwell

  399. with God.

  400. They will not triumph.

  401. Why?

  402. Truth number three,

  403. because the Lord

  404. sees every sin.

  405. Look how David

  406. draws attention

  407. to the specific sins

  408. of his enemies here.

  409. Do you think that God

  410. doesn't see this?

  411. Do you think that God

  412. isn't already aware

  413. of what David

  414. calls his attention to

  415. here?

  416. Of course he knows.

  417. God sees every act,

  418. he knows every thought,

  419. he hears every word,

  420. but David here,

  421. he calls God's attention

  422. to the specific sins

  423. of his enemies.

  424. He's calling on God

  425. to see and to act.

  426. He says,

  427. those who boast

  428. will not stand before you.

  429. His enemies are boastful.

  430. The proud will not stand

  431. before the Lord.

  432. And not only that,

  433. David says that

  434. these enemies are liars.

  435. They're bloodthirsty.

  436. They're full of lies.

  437. I wonder if you've ever

  438. been lied about.

  439. If you know how this feels.

  440. David's enemies,

  441. they want him dead.

  442. They've lied about him.

  443. Now they're boasting

  444. in their arrogance.

  445. David's confidence

  446. in the midst of all of this

  447. is that surely God sees it.

  448. Surely God knows

  449. about the wickedness

  450. of these people.

  451. But not only that,

  452. he knows about it.

  453. Number four,

  454. verse five,

  455. his confidence

  456. is that God hates it.

  457. Verse five says,

  458. the Lord hates

  459. all evil doers.

  460. The Lord abhors

  461. the bloodthirsty

  462. and the deceitful.

  463. Now,

  464. here's where we have to pause.

  465. This is hard for us to hear.

  466. Did he just say

  467. what I think he said?

  468. That the Lord hates

  469. all evil doers?

  470. What happened to

  471. love the sinner,

  472. hate the sin?

  473. This is a lot of hate

  474. for a God of love.

  475. How can we understand this?

  476. That David is saying here,

  477. the Lord abhors

  478. bloodthirsty

  479. and deceitful men.

  480. The Lord hates

  481. all evil doers.

  482. Well,

  483. we have to understand,

  484. church,

  485. that the Lord

  486. deeply,

  487. deeply

  488. hates

  489. sin.

  490. He hates

  491. sin.

  492. This truth

  493. is both

  494. an offense

  495. to the sinful

  496. and

  497. it is the hope

  498. of the righteous.

  499. We can't minimize this,

  500. that God hates

  501. sin.

  502. And of course,

  503. that's an offense

  504. to the sinful.

  505. Everybody wants to be

  506. affirmed in their sin.

  507. Everybody wants to keep

  508. their sin around

  509. like a pet.

  510. And nobody wants to hear

  511. a message of God

  512. hating their wickedness.

  513. We all

  514. want a God

  515. that just loves us

  516. and accepts us

  517. just as we are.

  518. We don't have to change

  519. a thing about us.

  520. That's the God

  521. that we want,

  522. but that's a God

  523. of our imagination.

  524. That is not

  525. the God

  526. of the Bible.

  527. The God

  528. of the Bible

  529. hates

  530. sin.

  531. It's truth.

  532. This is the offense

  533. of the gospel.

  534. But,

  535. it's also

  536. the hope

  537. of the righteous.

  538. David's confidence

  539. in the face

  540. of evil

  541. is God's

  542. hatred of it.

  543. We have to understand,

  544. if we take away

  545. God's hatred

  546. of sin,

  547. then we should have

  548. no confidence

  549. that God

  550. will deal

  551. with it.

  552. If we

  553. minimize

  554. and undermine

  555. God's complete

  556. hatred of wickedness,

  557. we should have

  558. no hope

  559. that God

  560. would ever

  561. do away

  562. with it

  563. as He's promised

  564. that He will.

  565. But God

  566. hates sin.

  567. Because God

  568. hates wickedness,

  569. we can be sure

  570. that He will

  571. do away

  572. with all wickedness.

  573. But here,

  574. He says,

  575. God hates

  576. the sinful.

  577. sinful.

  578. Now,

  579. this is hard

  580. for us to swallow,

  581. isn't it?

  582. This is hard

  583. for us to swallow.

  584. You know,

  585. one reason why

  586. I think this is hard

  587. for us to understand,

  588. why we struggle

  589. with this,

  590. is because

  591. we tend to want

  592. to divorce

  593. sinful actions

  594. from people.

  595. As if sinful thoughts,

  596. sinful words,

  597. sinful actions,

  598. sinful motives

  599. exist apart

  600. from sinful people.

  601. They don't come

  602. from sinful people.

  603. But the Bible

  604. doesn't speak like that.

  605. The Bible,

  606. Jesus says,

  607. the good person

  608. out of the good

  609. treasure of his heart

  610. produces good.

  611. The evil person

  612. out of his evil

  613. treasure produces evil.

  614. Out of the overflow

  615. of the heart,

  616. the mouth speaks.

  617. Lies come

  618. from a lying heart.

  619. Murder comes

  620. from a murderous heart.

  621. Boasting comes

  622. from a boastful,

  623. prideful heart.

  624. And the Lord

  625. sees it

  626. and the Lord

  627. hates it.

  628. But you know

  629. the real reason

  630. why this is hard

  631. for us to swallow?

  632. It's because

  633. all of us

  634. know

  635. that we

  636. are wicked.

  637. That we

  638. are wicked.

  639. Look there

  640. to verse 9.

  641. He's describing

  642. his enemies.

  643. He says,

  644. there's no truth

  645. in their mouth.

  646. Their inmost self

  647. is destruction.

  648. Their throat

  649. is an open grave.

  650. They flatter

  651. with their tongue.

  652. This is not

  653. a very lovable image.

  654. And Paul

  655. in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  656. in fact,

  657. turn there with me

  658. if you can

  659. very quickly.

  660. Paul in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  661. he takes

  662. these same words,

  663. these same descriptions

  664. of the wickedness

  665. that God abhors

  666. and he applies

  667. them to

  668. everyone.

  669. You

  670. and me.

  671. Turn with me

  672. to Romans 3.

  673. Look there.

  674. Romans 3 verse 10

    Romans 3:10

  675. very briefly.

  676. Here's what he says.

  677. None is righteous.

  678. No, not one.

  679. No one understands.

  680. No one seeks

  681. for God.

  682. All have turned aside.

  683. Together

  684. they have become

  685. worthless.

  686. I'd love to hear

  687. a prosperity teacher

  688. preach on this passage.

  689. I'm not going to

  690. hold my breath.

  691. No one does good.

  692. Not even one.

  693. Their throat

  694. is an open grave.

  695. There we go,

  696. quoting this passage.

  697. They use their tongues

  698. to deceive.

  699. The venom of asps

  700. is under their lips.

  701. Their mouth

  702. is full of curses

  703. and bitterness.

  704. Their feet

  705. are swift

  706. to shed blood.

  707. In their paths

  708. are ruin

  709. and misery

  710. and the way

  711. of peace

  712. they have not known.

  713. There is no fear

  714. of God

  715. before their eyes.

  716. If this is us,

  717. if this is our wickedness

  718. and if God feels

  719. about our wickedness

  720. the way that David says

  721. he feels about

  722. our wickedness,

  723. this is not good

  724. for us.

  725. No one is righteous.

  726. No, not one.

  727. But if this is true,

  728. and it is,

  729. then how in the world

  730. could this possibly

  731. give us any confidence?

  732. If this is true,

  733. how can David,

  734. a wicked man,

  735. a bloodthirsty man,

  736. one who is deeply sinful,

  737. has already demonstrated

  738. his sin

  739. and the issues

  740. with Bathsheba

  741. and with Uriah,

  742. how can David

  743. pray with any confidence

  744. that the Lord

  745. would judge his enemies

  746. for their wickedness

  747. and not him

  748. for his wickedness?

  749. Do you see the issue here?

  750. There is one hope.

  751. Point number three.

  752. Third,

  753. believers groan

  754. with hope

  755. in the steadfast love

  756. of God.

  757. Believers groan

  758. with hope

  759. in the steadfast love

  760. of God.

  761. What is David's hope?

  762. God hates the wicked.

  763. God hates sin.

  764. When David looks out

  765. and sees armies approaching,

  766. when he knows

  767. that wicked men

  768. are coming for his life,

  769. but he knows

  770. that he himself

  771. has shed innocent blood,

  772. that he himself

  773. is guilty

  774. and sinful.

  775. What is his hope?

  776. It's not his goodness.

  777. It's not his strength.

  778. It's not his skill.

  779. What does it say?

  780. Verse seven.

  781. But I,

  782. he says,

  783. through the abundance

  784. of your steadfast love

  785. will enter your house.

  786. I will bow down

  787. toward your holy temple

  788. in the fear of you.

  789. So lead me,

  790. O Lord,

  791. in your righteousness

  792. because of my enemies.

  793. Make your way

  794. straight before me.

  795. Now,

  796. how does David

  797. enter into the presence

  798. of God

  799. as a wicked man?

  800. Listen to this.

  801. David escapes

  802. the judgment

  803. of God

  804. through

  805. the love of God.

  806. Say that again.

  807. David escapes

  808. the judgment

  809. of God

  810. through

  811. the love

  812. of God

  813. and so do we.

  814. This is the hope

  815. of the gospel.

  816. Do you know

  817. the hope

  818. of the gospel,

  819. church?

  820. I know you do,

  821. but do you cling

  822. to it

  823. as your only hope?

  824. Do you cling

  825. to the steadfast

  826. love of God

  827. for you in Christ

  828. as your only hope

  829. to escape

  830. the wrath of God

  831. against your sin?

  832. Do you realize

  833. that that wrath

  834. of God

  835. against your sin

  836. is much bigger,

  837. much more serious,

  838. much weightier

  839. than any trial,

  840. any suffering,

  841. any difficulty,

  842. any attack

  843. you could ever face

  844. in this life?

  845. But if you have

  846. the steadfast love

  847. of God

  848. offered freely

  849. through Christ,

  850. then no trial,

  851. no pain,

  852. no suffering,

  853. no grief,

  854. no loss,

  855. no heartache,

  856. nothing can separate

  857. you from the love

  858. of God

  859. in Christ Jesus

  860. our Lord.

  861. This is the gospel.

  862. This is the hope

  863. that we have.

  864. And hear me,

  865. this love of God

  866. is offered freely

  867. to sinners

  868. in Christ.

  869. Any who would turn

  870. from their wicked ways

  871. and put their faith

  872. in their risen Savior

  873. can know

  874. the steadfast love

  875. of God

  876. for the rest

  877. of eternity.

  878. This is good news.

  879. There are so many

  880. words that we could

  881. use to describe

  882. the gospel.

  883. I want you to remember

  884. just two this morning

  885. from this psalm.

  886. The gospel is a message

  887. of love

  888. and justice.

  889. The gospel is a message

  890. of love

  891. and justice.

  892. And we see both of them

  893. here.

  894. Now look there with me

  895. to verse 10.

  896. Psalm 5,

    Psalms 5:10

  897. verse 10.

  898. David prays,

  899. Make them bear

  900. their guilt,

  901. O God.

  902. Let them fall

  903. by their own counsels.

  904. Because of the abundance

  905. of their transgressions,

  906. cast them out.

  907. For they've rebelled

  908. against you.

  909. You know,

  910. that's what the wicked

  911. deserve.

  912. David is praying

  913. in light of the holiness

  914. and the justice

  915. of God

  916. that the wicked

  917. would get

  918. what they deserve

  919. for their guilt.

  920. And they will.

  921. God will one day

  922. address every ounce

  923. of wickedness.

  924. All of us

  925. will have to give

  926. an account

  927. to the Lord

  928. and He will bring

  929. justice.

  930. But our hope,

  931. believer,

  932. our confidence

  933. is that because

  934. of the mercy

  935. and the love

  936. of God,

  937. we do not

  938. get what we

  939. deserve.

  940. because of the mercy

  941. and the love

  942. of God,

  943. we do not

  944. get what we

  945. deserve.

  946. The wicked,

  947. because of the abundance

  948. of their transgressions,

  949. are cast away.

  950. But I,

  951. David says,

  952. through the abundance

  953. of your steadfast love,

  954. will enter the presence

  955. of God.

  956. How?

  957. Because Christ

  958. has taken

  959. the wrath

  960. that my sins

  961. deserve.

  962. That's our confidence.

  963. confidence.

  964. That's our hope,

  965. that Jesus Christ,

  966. the true,

  967. innocent King

  968. of God's people,

  969. bore the wrath

  970. of God

  971. in our place.

  972. You know,

  973. God doesn't just

  974. look away

  975. from sin.

  976. He can't do that.

  977. He's just.

  978. All sin

  979. must be

  980. paid for.

  981. All sin

  982. must be

  983. atoned

  984. for.

  985. And so Christ

  986. died not for

  987. His sin,

  988. but for ours.

  989. Justice

  990. was satisfied

  991. in Him

  992. so that

  993. the steadfast

  994. love of God

  995. might be given

  996. to us

  997. who believe

  998. in Him.

  999. You see,

  1000. the difference

  1001. between the righteous

  1002. and the wicked,

  1003. the difference

  1004. between those

  1005. who are righteous

  1006. in God's sight

  1007. and those who are

  1008. wicked in God's sight,

  1009. is it's not that

  1010. they sin

  1011. and we don't.

1012. It's that by the grace

  1013. of God,

  1014. we have been

  1015. made righteous,

  1016. declared righteous

  1017. because of His

  1018. faithfulness,

  1019. not ours.

  1020. And we stand

  1021. before Him

  1022. as holy

  1023. because of the

  1024. greatness of

  1025. His love,

  1026. not ours.

  1027. Apart from the

  1028. unmerited,

  1029. steadfast love

  1030. of God

  1031. given freely

  1032. to sinners in Christ,

  1033. we are rebels.

  1034. We are wicked.

  1035. We are deserving

  1036. of the fires

  1037. of hell.

  1038. We are deserving

  1039. of the wrath

  1040. of God,

  1041. but God demonstrates

  1042. His love for us

  1043. and that while

  1044. we were still sinners,

  1045. Christ died for us.

  1046. We were those

  1047. who deserve

  1048. His judgment

  1049. because of our

  1050. transgressions,

  1051. but because Christ

  1052. was pierced

  1053. for our transgressions

  1054. and crushed

  1055. for our iniquities

  1056. by His wounds,

  1057. we are healed.

  1058. That's the gospel,

  1059. church.

  1060. Now,

  1061. what does that

  1062. have to do

  1063. with our groaning

  1064. and our suffering?

  1065. Well,

  1066. because of the

  1067. love of God

  1068. given to us

  1069. in Christ,

  1070. believers don't

  1071. groan in despair.

  1072. we groan

  1073. in hope.

  1074. If God did not

  1075. spare His own

  1076. Son,

  1077. but gave Him

  1078. up for us all,

  1079. how will He not

  1080. also graciously

  1081. along with Him

  1082. graciously give us

  1083. all things?

  1084. What can suffering

  1085. do to us

  1086. but draw us

  1087. closer to Christ?

  1088. What can suffering

  1089. do to us

  1090. but make us

  1091. more like Him?

  1092. What can suffering

  1093. do to us

  1094. but bring us

  1095. to the presence

  1096. of God?

  1097. You know,

  1098. one of my favorite

  1099. passages to quote

  1100. for those who are

  1101. suffering is 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  1102. chapter 5.

  1103. And Paul says

  1104. to the believer,

  1105. So we do not

  1106. lose heart.

  1107. Though our outer self

  1108. is wasting away,

  1109. your inner self

  1110. is being renewed

  1111. day by day.

  1112. For this light

  1113. momentary affliction

  1114. is preparing for us

  1115. an eternal weight

  1116. of glory

  1117. beyond all comparison.

  1118. As we look not

  1119. to the things

  1120. that are seen

  1121. but to the things

  1122. that are unseen.

  1123. For the things

  1124. that are seen

  1125. are transient

  1126. but the things

  1127. that are unseen

  1128. are eternal.

  1129. For we know

  1130. that if the tent

  1131. that is our earthly

  1132. home is destroyed

  1133. we have a building

  1134. from God,

  1135. a house not made

  1136. with hands,

  1137. eternal in the heavens.

  1138. For in this tent

  1139. we groan,

  1140. longing to put on

  1141. our heavenly dwelling.

1142. If indeed by putting it on

1143. we may not be found

  1144. naked.

1145. For while we are still

  1146. in this tent

  1147. we groan,

  1148. being burdened

  1149. not that we would

  1150. be unclothed

  1151. but that we would

  1152. be further clothed

1153. so that what is mortal

  1154. may be swallowed up

  1155. by life.

1156. He who has prepared us

  1157. for this very thing

  1158. is God

  1159. who has given us

  1160. the spirit

  1161. as a guarantee.

1162. Do you have this hope?

  1163. Are you clinging

  1164. to the steadfast love

  1165. of God

  1166. available to you

  1167. freely in Christ?

  1168. If not,

  1169. the offer is made

  1170. now to you

  1171. to turn from your

  1172. wickedness

  1173. and to trust

  1174. in the risen Savior

  1175. Jesus Christ

  1176. who bore the wrath

  1177. of God

  1178. for you

  1179. so that you

  1180. might know

  1181. the steadfast love

  1182. of God.

  1183. If you do

  1184. know that love

  1185. believer

  1186. then cling to it

  1187. no matter what

  1188. happens to you

  1189. in this life

  1190. believer

  1191. we can groan

  1192. with joy.

  1193. This is our

  1194. fourth and final

  1195. point this morning.

  1196. Fourth,

  1197. believers

  1198. groan

  1199. with joy.

  1200. David ends

  1201. here with another

  1202. contrast between

  1203. the righteous

  1204. and the wicked.

  1205. Look there with me

  1206. to verse 11.

  1207. The wicked

  1208. are cast out

  1209. away from the

  1210. presence of God

  1211. but he prays

  1212. in verse 11

  1213. he says

  1214. let all

  1215. who take refuge

  1216. in you

  1217. rejoice.

  1218. Let them

  1219. ever sing

  1220. for joy

  1221. and spread

  1222. your protection

  1223. over them

  1224. that those

  1225. who love

  1226. your name

  1227. may exalt

  1228. in you

  1229. for you

  1230. bless the

  1231. righteous

  1232. O Lord.

  1233. You cover him

  1234. with favor

  1235. as with a shield.

  1236. David

  1237. claims

  1238. two great

  1239. promises

  1240. here

  1241. for the

  1242. righteous.

  1243. Do you see them?

  1244. He claims

  1245. God's blessing

  1246. and he claims

  1247. God's

  1248. protection

  1249. over the

  1250. righteous.

  1251. And you know

  1252. this is

  1253. where those

  1254. prosperity

  1255. teachers go

  1256. wrong

  1257. isn't it?

  1258. Because they

  1259. want to claim

  1260. these promises

  1261. right now.

  1262. Total

  1263. blessing

  1264. total

  1265. protection

  1266. no

  1267. suffering

  1268. total

  1269. health

  1270. total

  1271. righteousness

  1272. total

  1273. wisdom

  1274. total

  1275. wealth

  1276. total

  1277. victory

  1278. right now

  1279. no

  1280. suffering

  1281. but we

  1282. have to

  1283. realize

  1284. these are

  1285. eternal

  1286. promises

  1287. aren't they?

  1288. And we

  1289. get hints

  1290. and taste

  1291. of these

  1292. promises

  1293. here and

  1294. now

  1295. but their

  1296. fulfillment

  1297. is yet

  1298. to come

  1299. when Christ

  1300. our King

  1301. returns.

  1302. Suffering

  1303. comes before

  1304. glory

  1305. for Christ

  1306. and for

  1307. the people

  1308. of Christ

  1309. but what

  1310. we can

  1311. have

  1312. right now

  1313. even in

  1314. the midst

  1315. of trials

  1316. is joy.

  1317. You see that

  1318. there in

  1319. verse 11?

  1320. He says

  1321. let all

  1322. who take

  1323. refuge in

  1324. you

  1325. rejoice

  1326. let them

  1327. sing

  1328. ever sing

  1329. for joy

  1330. and spread

  1331. your protection

  1332. over them

  1333. that those

  1334. who love

  1335. your name

  1336. may exalt

  1337. in you.

  1338. Do you know

  1339. what it's like

  1340. to rejoice

  1341. in suffering?

  1342. I know

  1343. that you know

  1344. what it's like

  1345. to suffer.

  1346. Every morning

  1347. every Sunday

  1348. morning we

  1349. gather

  1350. we share

  1351. prayer requests

  1352. we talk

  1353. about our

  1354. suffering

  1355. I hear it

  1356. I know it

  1357. but do you

  1358. know what

  1359. it's like

  1360. to rejoice

  1361. in your

  1362. suffering?

  1363. This is what

  1364. we're called

  1365. to believers.

  1366. This is why

  1367. James calls

  1368. us to count

  1369. it all

  1370. joy my

  1371. brothers

  1372. when you

  1373. meet

  1374. trials

  1375. of various

  1376. kinds

  1377. for you

  1378. know

  1379. that the

  1380. testing

  1381. of your

  1382. faith

  1383. produces

  1384. steadfastness

  1385. and let

  1386. steadfastness

  1387. have its

  1388. full effect

  1389. that you

  1390. may be

  1391. perfect

  1392. and complete

  1393. lacking

  1394. in nothing

  1395. do you

  1396. know what

  1397. it's like

  1398. to suffer

  1399. with joy?

  1400. I want

  1401. to close

  1402. this morning

  1403. by reading

  1404. to you

  1405. some of

  1406. an article

  1407. that I

  1408. read this

  1409. week

  1410. by someone

  1411. named

  1412. Joni

  1413. Erickson

  1414. Tata

  1415. you may

  1416. know that

  1417. name

  1418. if not

  1419. I would

  1420. highly

  1421. encourage

  1422. you to

  1423. go read

  1424. some of

  1425. what she's

  1426. written

  1427. Joni

  1428. Erickson

  1429. Tata

  1430. was paralyzed

  1431. at a

  1432. young age

  1433. through a

  1434. terrible

  1435. accident

  1436. and she

  1437. doubted

  1438. was angry

  1439. was bitter

  1440. towards the

  1441. Lord

  1442. but the

  1443. Lord

  1444. restored

  1445. her joy

  1446. in the

  1447. faith

  1448. if anybody

  1449. knows what

  1450. it's like

  1451. to suffer

  1452. with joy

  1453. it's her

  1454. so please

  1455. listen to

  1456. this as

  1457. we close

  1458. she says

  1459. no one

  1460. understands

  1461. the relationship

  1462. between joy

  1463. and suffering

  1464. better than

  1465. the son

  1466. of man

  1467. my God

  1468. became human

  1469. his love

  1470. insisting

  1471. that I

  1472. might not

  1473. be alone

  1474. in my

  1475. struggles

  1476. when I

  1477. hurt

  1478. he knows

  1479. but Jesus

  1480. does not

  1481. merely

  1482. sympathize

  1483. with me

  1484. he's done

  1485. something

  1486. about it

  1487. through his

  1488. death and

  1489. resurrection

  1490. he has

  1491. freed me

  1492. from sin's

  1493. power

  1494. and in

  1495. part

  1496. from the

  1497. suffering

  1498. that results

  1499. from it

  1500. and he

  1501. will free

  1502. me fully

  1503. in the

  1504. age to

  1505. come

  1506. that

  1507. coming

  1508. age

  1509. is my

  1510. joyous

  1511. hope

  1512. is hope

  1513. that sees

  1514. Jesus

  1515. on his

  1516. throne

  1517. with his

  1518. kingdom

  1519. filling

  1520. every

  1521. corner

  1522. of the

  1523. cosmos

  1524. hope

  1525. that

  1526. envisions

  1527. sorrow

  1528. and

  1529. sighing

  1530. erased

  1531. from the

  1532. face

  1533. of the

  1534. universe

  1535. hope

  1536. that

  1537. eagerly

  1538. awaits

  1539. the

  1540. moment

  1541. when

  1542. pain

  1543. and

  1544. tears

  1545. will be

  1546. banished

  1547. and evil

  1548. will be

  1549. punished

  1550. but that

  1551. hope

  1552. the better

  1553. country

  1554. of Hebrews

  1555. 11 16

  1556. is still

  1557. in the

  1558. future

  1559. I've likely

  1560. got miles

  1561. to go

  1562. before I

  1563. sleep

  1564. and it's

  1565. getting harder

  1566. to adjust

  1567. to the harsh

  1568. encroachments

  1569. of older age

  1570. and increasing

  1571. pain

  1572. I could easily

  1573. throw down

  1574. my pick

  1575. and shovel

  1576. collapsed

  1577. by the edge

  1578. of my ugly

  1579. field

  1580. and say

  1581. God I am

  1582. so tired

  1583. of this

  1584. please no

  1585. more

  1586. so

  1587. listen to

  1588. this

  1589. so I

  1590. stoke

  1591. my hope

  1592. I am

  1593. heartened

  1594. by my

  1595. precious

  1596. savior

  1597. and the

  1598. way

  1599. he

  1600. endured

  1601. unthinkable

  1602. suffering

  1603. for the

  1604. joy set

  1605. before him

  1606. I follow

  1607. him

  1608. parking

  1609. my

  1610. wheelchair

  1611. on Romans

  1612. 12 12

  1613. rejoice

  1614. in hope

  1615. be patient

  1616. in tribulation

  1617. be constant

  1618. in prayer

  1619. now it's

  1620. easy to see

  1621. why God

  1622. commands us

  1623. to be

  1624. constant

  1625. in prayer

  1626. for it

  1627. can be a

  1628. struggle

  1629. to pray

  1630. when we're

  1631. suffering

  1632. and we

  1633. understand

  1634. why God

  1635. commands us

  1636. to be

  1637. patient

  1638. in tribulation

  1639. for it's

  1640. hard to

  1641. muster

  1642. patience

  1643. when you

  1644. are in

  1645. misery

  1646. but it's

  1647. really

  1648. hard

  1649. to rejoice

  1650. in hope

  1651. hope can

  1652. feel so

  1653. far off

  1654. vague

  1655. and nebulous

  1656. yet God

  1657. commands it

  1658. for if Jesus

  1659. laid aside

  1660. his robes

  1661. to put on

  1662. the enormous

  1663. indignity

  1664. of human

  1665. birth

  1666. for our

  1667. sake

  1668. then his

  1669. father

  1670. has the

  1671. right

  1672. to command

  1673. our

  1674. joy

  1675. he has

  1676. the

  1677. prerogative

  1678. to call

  1679. forth in

  1680. us a

  1681. happiness

  1682. that's

  1683. commensurate

  1684. with his

  1685. son's

  1686. sacrifice

  1687. we are

  1688. to cultivate

  1689. a joy

  1690. that's

  1691. worthy

  1692. of Jesus

  1693. our

  1694. blessed

  1695. hope

  1696. believer

  1697. respond

  1698. to the

  1699. dangers

  1700. of this

  1701. life

  1702. by taking

  1703. refuge

  1704. in him

  1705. respond

  1706. to the

  1707. suffering

  1708. of life

  1709. by groaning

  1710. to him

  1711. in confidence

  1712. him

  1713. who spared

  1714. not his

  1715. own son

  1716. to Christ

  1717. who suffered

  1718. for us

  1719. that we

  1720. might join

  1721. him

  1722. in glory

  1723. let's pray

  1724. lord would

  1725. you lead

  1726. us

  1727. because of

  1728. our

  1729. enemies

  1730. would you

  1731. go before

  1732. us

  1733. and lead

  1734. the way

  1735. as we

  1736. walk

  1737. through yet

  1738. another

  1739. week

  1740. as we

  1741. go home

  1742. this afternoon

  1743. as we

  1744. face

  1745. all the

  1746. many

  1747. trials

  1748. of our

  1749. life

  1750. lord we

  1751. pray

  1752. with confidence

  1753. in you

  1754. groaning

  1755. to you

  1756. lord

  1757. would you

  1758. see

  1759. our

  1760. weakness

  1761. god

  1762. and give

  1763. us

  1764. strength

  1765. would you

  1766. see

  1767. our

  1768. trials

  1769. father

  1770. and go

  1771. before us

  1772. lead us

  1773. lord even

  1774. through the

  1775. valley of

  1776. darkness

  1777. father

  1778. and we

  1779. thank you

  1780. for sending

  1781. christ to

  1782. live and

  1783. to die

  1784. and to

  1785. rise

  1786. for us

  1787. that we

  1788. might have

  1789. hope even

  1790. in the midst

  1791. of our

  1792. suffering

  1793. we love

  1794. you lord

  1795. and we

  1796. pray this

  1797. in christ

  1798. name

  1799. amen
