  1. If you would, please remain standing. You might have noticed we changed up a few things this morning in our order of service.

  2. One of the reasons why we sing a song this week before I come up here is so that you would still be standing by the time I got here,

  3. so that you can remain standing while we read the Word of God together as a sign of reverence for the Word.

  4. So if you would, I do want you to take your Bibles and open them to Psalm chapter 6.

    Psalms 6 chapter mention

  5. We'll read Psalm chapter 6 together as our sermon text this morning.

    Psalms 6 chapter mention

  6. David writes,

  7. O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.

  8. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing.

  9. Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.

  10. My soul also is greatly troubled.

  11. But you, O Lord, how long?

  12. Turn, O Lord, deliver my life.

  13. Save me for the sake of your steadfast love.

  14. For in death there is no remembrance of you.

  15. In Sheol, who will give you praise?

  16. I am weary with my moaning.

  17. Every night I flood my bed with tears.

  18. I drench my couch with my weeping.

  19. My eye wastes away because of grief.

  20. It grows weak because of all my foes.

  21. Depart from me, all you workers of evil.

  22. For the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.

  23. The Lord has heard my plea.

  24. The Lord accepts my prayer.

  25. All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled.

  26. They shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.

  27. Amen.

  28. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of our Lord endures forever.

  29. You may be seated.

  30. Let's pray.

  31. Lord, we have heard your word and now we pray that you would make it clear to us.

  32. Help us to hear it not just with our ears, but now with our hearts.

  33. Lord, we ask, even as we've already prayed, Lord, would you comfort those who are discouraged this morning?

  34. Would you challenge those who are idle this morning?

  35. And would you call us all to deeper trust in Christ, we pray.

  36. In Jesus' name.

  37. Amen.

  38. I was recently asked to share something that was encouraging to me about Seawee Bay.

  39. About the ministry that's going on here.

  40. And thankfully, I didn't have to think long and hard about that question.

  41. Several answers came quickly to mind.

  42. But a few events over the past few weeks have given me a new answer.

  43. I am encouraged by the way that you suffer.

  44. I'm not encouraged that you suffer.

  45. Don't get me wrong.

  46. I'm encouraged by the way that you suffer.

  47. I want to share a story with you of someone that you know.

  48. I won't tell you her name.

  49. But if you know her, then you know exactly who I'm talking about.

  50. This woman has suffered maybe more than anyone I know.

  51. Especially so over the past few years.

  52. She had a heart transplant years ago and now is in need of a new heart.

  53. She had a kidney transplant years ago and now is on constant dialysis treatments.

  54. She's had constant unexplained bleeding that keeps her in and out of the hospital.

  55. And the doctors really have no clear path forward.

  56. Not sure what to do.

  57. It has rained and it has poured on this woman's life.

  58. And I went to go see her in the hospital a few weeks ago.

  59. And at this point, when I went to go visit her, at this point in her suffering, she thought she was at the point of death.

  60. In fact, everyone in the room thought that she was at the point of death.

  61. Her family had gathered there.

  62. They called in a doctor there to hear what she wanted to do.

  63. Nobody had great options.

  64. And I'll tell you what she said.

  65. She sat up in her bed as best as she could and she said,

  66. You know, I have had a wonderful life.

  67. And the Lord has given me 20 years on a borrowed heart.

  68. He's cared for me in so many ways.

  69. I love Jesus and I am ready to be with him.

  70. And the doctor's just sitting there listening to her.

  71. I tell you, there's not a dry eye in the room.

  72. And you know what she did?

  73. She kept quoting to herself and to everybody else there in the room out loud.

  74. Psalm 23, she said,

  75. I know that surely goodness and mercy shall follow me.

  76. I know that surely goodness and mercy shall follow me.

  77. I know that surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.

  78. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  79. And I thought, that is how a believer suffers.

  80. That, I pray, is how I will suffer.

  81. The next time affliction comes my way.

  82. What I want to do this morning from Psalm chapter 6 is to convince you,

    Psalms 6 chapter mention

  83. to let David convince you that this is how all believers must suffer in this life.

  84. Psalm chapter 6, it teaches us that God's people face remarkable affliction

    Psalms 6 chapter mention

  85. with unshakable assurance.

  86. This is the big idea here for us this morning.

  87. This is actually going to be our outline.

  88. We'll look at each part.

  89. God's people face remarkable affliction with unshakable assurance.

  90. First, we see that God's people face remarkable affliction.

  91. You know, some people would tell you that being a Christian exempts you from suffering.

  92. And I hope that we've seen over the past six weeks in the Psalms that those people are very wrong.

  93. Being a Christian does not exempt you from suffering.

  94. On the contrary, believers face all sorts of trials in this life.

  95. And we saw last week, it's worth mentioning here again this morning,

  96. that over a third of the book of Psalms are Psalms of lament.

  97. They're complaints.

  98. They're lamenting to God about some trial, some issue, some affliction,

  99. some discouraging event in the psalmist's life.

  100. This is normal for the life of the believer.

  101. But aren't you thankful that the Bible gives us an honest perspective on life?

  102. It gives us an honest look at the life of a believer,

  103. that life on this side of eternity is difficult for everybody, believer or not.

  104. But the way a believer faces affliction is completely different from the rest of the world.

  105. Look here at all the afflictions that David is facing.

  106. I count five here, at least.

  107. And I'd be willing to bet that as we go through these five afflictions,

  108. that you can find yourself in at least one or two of them.

  109. Number one is the affliction of our own sin.

  110. We got everybody in the room already, didn't we?

  111. And number one is the affliction of our own sin.

  112. Look there to verse one.

  113. David says,

  114. Oh Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.

  115. Be gracious to me, oh Lord, for I am languishing.

  116. What's the cause?

  117. What's the source of God's anger towards David?

  118. What's the source of his hard hand of discipline and his wrath against him?

  119. It's David's own sin.

  120. You may remember some of the context of this section of Psalms that we're in.

  121. David is on the run from his son Absalom.

  122. Absalom has ripped the kingdom away from David.

  123. He's stolen away the hearts of the people.

  124. And now he's coming to kill him.

  125. And he's bringing a couple thousand men with him.

  126. Some of y'all thought that your family situations were difficult.

  127. This is more difficult.

  128. But the cause of this, David knows all of it, all of it can be traced back to his sin.

  129. 2 Samuel 12, you can mark this down for later.

  130. Nathan the prophet confronts David and he tells him that he has sinned against the Lord.

  131. He says, you are the man.

  132. The Lord has made David king.

  133. He's given him everything he could possibly ever need.

  134. And yet, David wasn't satisfied.

  135. He stole away Bathsheba from Uriah the Hittite.

  136. He made her his wife.

  137. And then he had Uriah killed to cover it up.

  138. David, the king of Israel, has sinned greatly against the Lord.

  139. And as is the case with all sin, his sin came with consequence.

  140. Listen to what 2 Samuel 12 says.

  141. Nathan says,

  142. Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house.

  143. Because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife,

  144. thus says the Lord,

  145. Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house.

  146. It's clear that this is the source of David's trouble.

  147. It's his own sin.

  148. This is why David's asking for the Lord's grace.

  149. This is why he's asking for the Lord to relieve him of his discipline.

  150. Because David knows at the root of his trouble,

  151. at the root of his suffering,

  152. is his own sin.

  153. Now unfortunately,

  154. it's not always this clear for us in our own lives, is it?

  155. And we have the advantage of being able to have God's own commentary on this event in David's life,

  156. but we don't have that same level of clarity and certainty in our own lives.

  157. And so I want to be clear.

  158. Not all suffering is directly related to a particular sin in your life.

  159. Now I'll say that again.

  160. Not all suffering in your life can be directly connected to a particular sin in your life.

  161. You might think of Job as an example,

  162. of someone who suffered in innocence.

  163. Not all suffering is directly related to a particular sin in your life,

  164. but it might be.

  165. It might be.

  166. We need to have this category in our minds.

  167. It might be that the Lord,

  168. as your heavenly Father,

  169. is disciplining you for a particular sin in your life.

  170. David is clearly an example of this, isn't he?

  171. We often, I think we want God to do whatever he needs to do to make us comfortable,

  172. when in reality,

  173. God is committed to do whatever it takes

  174. to make us conform more into his holy image.

  175. This is what Hebrews tells us in Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  176. He says,

  177. He disciplines us, children of God,

  178. for our good that we may share in his holiness.

  179. For the moment,

  180. all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant.

  181. Who enjoys discipline?

  182. No one.

  183. But later,

  184. it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness

  185. to those who have been trained by it.

  186. You know,

  187. if we are suffering,

  188. if we're experiencing some affliction,

  189. whether or not we know for certain

  190. that it's related to a particular sin in our life,

  191. we would be wise to seek out

  192. what the Lord might be doing in our affliction.

  193. We would be wise to ask the Lord to reveal to us any sin in our lives

  194. so that it might be confessed and repented of.

  195. We would be wise to do as David does here

  196. and seek the Lord's gracious relief through prayer and repentance.

  197. Sometimes affliction is a result of our own personal sin,

  198. but often, you know,

  199. it's simply a result of living in a sin-cursed world.

  200. Sometimes we face some trial,

  201. some affliction,

  202. some difficulty,

  203. and we just have no answer for it.

  204. All we can do is look at it and say,

  205. that's not how things should be.

  206. That's sin.

  207. We should know that all brokenness,

  208. all affliction,

  209. all suffering,

  210. all sickness,

  211. all decay,

  212. all the stresses and issues that we face every single week,

  213. all of it are the consequence of sin in the world.

  214. And one of those consequences,

  215. it says we see affliction number two here is sickness.

  216. Sickness.

  217. Treg prayed earlier.

  218. I look around the room.

  219. I see several that are not here,

  220. and I know it's because of physical ailments that are plaguing our bodies.

  221. He says there in verse two,

  222. look there.

  223. He says,

  224. I'm languishing.

  225. Heal me,

  226. oh Lord,

  227. for my bones are troubled.

  228. Do you know what it's like to have sick bones?

  229. Now you're so sick that you feel like you can count every single bone in your body.

  230. They ache.

  231. You don't want to move.

  232. You don't want to think.

  233. You don't want to do anything.

  234. You just want to lay there.

  235. And it never comes at a good time,

  236. does it?

  237. I can't imagine a worse time for David to get sick than right now.

  238. Can you?

  239. He's on the run.

  240. Armies are coming after him.

  241. He needs to be alert.

  242. He needs to be ready.

  243. He needs his strength.

  244. And now sickness comes.

  245. He's reminded yet again,

  246. he's not as strong,

  247. not as self-sufficient,

  248. not as self-reliant as he thinks he is.

  249. But not only is his body sick,

  250. he says his soul is wearing out as well.

  251. He says,

  252. my bones are troubled and my soul also is greatly troubled.

  253. David is both in physical and spiritual turmoil,

  254. body and soul.

  255. They are interconnected.

  256. And David says,

  257. both here are feeling the effects of sin.

  258. Both body and soul are in distress with no end in sight.

  259. And so he prays,

  260. he can hardly get out a sentence.

  261. Oh,

  262. you,

  263. oh Lord,

  264. but you,

  265. oh Lord,

  266. how long?

  267. Have you ever asked that question?

  268. How long,

  269. oh Lord,

  270. will I deal with this trial?

  271. How long,

  272. oh Lord,

  273. will I deal with this sickness?

  274. How long,

  275. oh Lord,

  276. will I deal with this sin?

  277. How long,

  278. oh Lord,

  279. until you will bring me some relief?

  280. All of us at some point or another,

  281. because we live in a sin-sick world,

  282. we've all experienced the affliction of sickness.

  283. For David,

  284. it seems like his sickness is bad enough,

  285. it seems to be closing in to the point of death.

  286. Death,

  287. death,

  288. this is affliction number three,

  289. that all of us face.

  290. Look there to verse four.

  291. It's the affliction of death.

  292. He says,

  293. turn,

  294. oh Lord,

  295. deliver my life.

  296. Save me for the sake of your steadfast love,

  297. for in death,

  298. there is no remembrance of you.

  299. In Sheol,

  300. who will give you praise?

  301. David is facing death.

  302. And Romans three tells us that the wages of sin is death.

  303. All of us have sinned.

  304. All of us live in a sin-sick world.

  305. And so all of us face the grim reality of death.

  306. No one will escape it.

  307. And with the presence of sickness,

  308. with the presence of death,

  309. you likely have experienced affliction number four,

  310. grief.

  311. Look there to verse six.

  312. Just look at the depth of David's grief here.

  313. He says,

  314. I am weary with my moaning.

  315. Every night I flood my bed with tears.

  316. I drench my couch with my weeping.

  317. My eye wastes away because of grief.

  318. It grows weak because of all of my foes.

  319. Are you depressed yet?

  320. This doesn't sound too encouraging,

  321. does it?

  322. You know what?

  323. I have never heard an attractional,

  324. seeker-sensitive pastor preach on Psalm chapter six.

  325. Have you?

  326. Well, there's a reason for that.

  327. It's because passages like this are not attractive.

  328. We're talking about real life here.

  329. We're talking about suffering and sickness and grief and death.

  330. This isn't things that we want to hear,

  331. but the Bible knows this is our honest experience,

  332. and so it's things that we need to hear,

  333. and we need to hear them from God himself.

  334. Grief, despair, sadness, groaning, crying,

  335. are all part of the believer's experience on this side of eternity.

  336. The Christian life is not always happy.

  337. There are seasons of deep and dark and intense grief,

  338. sadness, isolation, loneliness, sickness.

  339. And you know what?

  340. As I read through this psalm,

  341. what stood out to me was

  342. that the church of all places

  343. ought to be where we can be honest about this truth.

  344. We read this as David's individual prayer,

  345. vertically him in isolation,

  346. individually praying to the Lord,

  347. expressing his grief to the Lord,

  348. and that's true,

  349. but also all of us are reading this account right now, aren't we?

  350. This book of the Psalms is shared with all of God's people.

  351. David is opening up about his grief,

  352. not just individually to the Lord,

  353. but corporately to all of God's people.

  354. We should feel the freedom

  355. to walk through seasons of darkness and grief together.

  356. And not be ashamed that we're struggling.

  357. You know, part of our commitments to one another

  358. in our church covenant,

  359. we are called to rejoice with those who rejoice

  360. and to what?

  361. To weep with those who weep.

  362. We've made this commitment to one another.

  363. And what an opportunity we have

  364. to share the love of God

  365. with our brothers and sisters who are struggling.

  366. I think of an older lady who,

  367. I served in North Myrtle Beach,

  368. and she's with the Lord now.

  369. And she would just come into my office,

  370. and this happened more than once,

  371. she would just come into my office

  372. and sit down with no explanation whatsoever

  373. and start crying.

  374. And I couldn't get an answer out of her.

  375. I would try to prod her as best I could.

  376. What's going on?

  377. What's wrong?

  378. She had no answer to give.

  379. All she had was tears.

  380. And you know what?

  381. When the Lord brought us down here

  382. and we moved,

  383. for all the sermons that I preached,

  384. all the lessons that I taught,

  385. all the tasks that I accomplished there at the church,

  386. the thing that stood out to her most,

  387. what she thanked me for on my way out the door,

  388. was that she could come in my office and cry.

  389. I don't want to say that to pat myself on the back

  390. because my part was easy.

  391. I didn't do a thing.

  392. All I did was sit and listen.

  393. Her part, her part was difficult.

  394. She had to open up about her grief

  395. and let others be the ministering spirit of Christ

  396. to her in the midst of her darkness.

  397. And so must we, church.

  398. Don't hold your grief in to yourself.

  399. The body is here to care for those who are afflicted among us.

  400. One more affliction here.

  401. Affliction number five that all of us face.

  402. We face harm from other sinners.

  403. Why is David weak from crying?

  404. What's going on in his life?

  405. Verse seven, he says,

  406. I am worn out because of all of my foes.

  407. It's interesting, isn't it,

  408. that out of all of these afflictions, five of them,

  409. this is the only one that's outside of us.

  410. You know, all these other ones are internal.

  411. We experience them internally.

  412. They're personal.

  413. Our greatest enemy is our sin

  414. and all of its consequences in our life.

  415. But living in a fallen world,

  416. we also face affliction from other people,

  417. other sinners.

  418. And sometimes, like David,

  419. sometimes it comes from those who are closest to us.

  420. Does this sound familiar to any of you?

  421. Can you relate to David at all?

  422. The truth is,

  423. all of us, believer, non-believer alike,

  424. all of us face all sorts of afflictions in this life.

  425. But, for the believer,

  426. the good news is, like David,

  427. we don't stop at verse seven.

  428. The believer faces remarkable affliction

  429. with unshakable assurance.

  430. That's what we see in verses eight through 10.

  431. Look there with me.

  432. This is our second point this morning.

  433. Second, God's people face remarkable affliction

  434. with unshakable assurance.

  435. You know, the difference between a believer

  436. and a non-believer

  437. and our experience on this side of eternity

  438. is not a difference of suffering.

  439. It's not that they suffer and we don't.

  440. In fact, oftentimes, to our eye,

  441. it seems like the wicked are doing just fine.

  442. They seem like they're doing well for themselves.

  443. The difference is that

  444. in the midst of our suffering, believer,

  445. we cling to the promises of God.

  446. That's our assurance.

  447. That's our confidence.

  448. In the midst of any trial, any affliction,

  449. our assurance is the steadfast love of the Lord.

  450. This is what I want you to remember.

  451. This is the main message here from Psalm chapter six.

  452. The only way to endure the trials of this life

  453. is by clinging to the promises of God.

  454. If you're suffering right now

  455. and you are just in the middle of it,

  456. do everything you can

  457. to hammer the promises of God

  458. into your weary soul.

  459. And if you're not,

  460. if everything's going well for you,

  461. you're doing just fine,

  462. you would be wise

  463. to do everything you can

  464. to soak your roots deep down

  465. into the word of God

  466. before the storm comes your way.

  467. What are those promises?

  468. We've seen David's requests.

  469. He's given seven of them.

  470. I don't know if you're counting.

  471. Don't rebuke me.

  472. Don't discipline me in your wrath.

  473. Be gracious to me.

  474. Heal me.

  475. Turn, O Lord.

  476. Deliver my life.

  477. Save me.

  478. Seven requests that he makes.

  479. But what's the basis of his request?

  480. What's at the root?

  481. What's his assurance that God will act,

  482. that this will be done?

  483. What grounds does he have

  484. to make these requests before God?

  485. He has three unshakable truths here.

  486. Three promises here

  487. that give David assurance

  488. in the face of remarkable affliction.

  489. Number one.

  490. Number one.

  491. Our assurance in the face of affliction

  492. is that no matter what happens,

  493. God will act for the good of his people

  494. and the glory of his name.

  495. I'll say that again.

  496. I would love for you to write this down.

  497. Our assurance in the face of affliction

  498. is that no matter what happens,

  499. our God will act for the good of his people

  500. and the glory of his name.

  501. Look there again to verses four and five.

  502. David prays,

  503. Lord, deliver my life.

  504. Save me.

  505. Why?

  506. For the sake of your steadfast love.

  507. Save me.

  508. Why?

  509. For in death there is no remembrance of you.

  510. And Sheol, who will give you praise?

  511. And David knows that God's greatest motivator,

  512. the greatest motivator for God to act

  513. is the praise of his name.

  514. Everything comes back to this.

  515. God will always act for the glory of his name.

  516. And so David recognizes that there is an issue here.

  517. Do you see what it is?

  518. Do you see the issue here?

  519. The issue is that God's glory is at stake.

  520. God's reputation is at stake.

  521. His praise is at stake in David's suffering.

  522. The steadfast love of God is on trial in David's suffering.

  523. Do you see this?

  524. Despite his sin,

  525. David was God's anointed king, right?

  526. And more than that,

  527. God had promised David,

  528. what had he promised David?

  529. A son from his line to sit on the throne forever.

  530. So here's the issue.

  531. How can God stay true to his word

  532. and allow David to die and suffer?

  533. What would the nation say about a God

  534. that turned his back on his promises?

  535. What would this say about the character of God

  536. if he turned his back on his plan

  537. to lead his people through his anointed king?

  538. What would that say about the character of God?

  539. David prays that God would act

  540. because his own glory and praise is at stake.

  541. So he says,

  542. Save me for the sake of your steadfast love.

  543. We need to realize God's greatest motivator

  544. in all that he does,

  545. God's greatest motivation

  546. in all of his actions and creation and redemption

  547. is the glory of his name.

  548. And here's the good news for us, church.

  549. If we put our trust in the Lord,

  550. then our good is tied up with his glory.

  551. Let me give you an example.

  552. If I tell my boys that we're going on a trip,

  553. I've got three boys.

  554. If I tell them we're going on a trip,

  555. maybe we're going to the Grand Canyon, okay?

  556. Cross-country trip.

  557. First of all, could you imagine the length of that trip?

  558. We went to Georgia a couple weeks ago.

  559. I kid you not, 20 minutes into the drive,

  560. they were asking,

  561. Are we there?

  562. Are we there?

  563. Are we there?

  564. How long?

  565. How long?

  566. How long?

  567. Thankfully, they're pretty good riders.

  568. Most of the time,

  569. we've never tried cross-country,

  570. but all the stops,

  571. all the inconveniences,

  572. all the wrecks,

  573. all the hazards along the way

  574. to the mind of a child,

  575. that probably seems like it's an eternity,

  576. that they're never going to get there.

  577. Their assurance,

  578. despite the long, difficult, hazard-wrought journey,

  579. their assurance that we're going to get there

  580. is that mom and dad told them

  581. they're going to get there.

  582. And they know

  583. that if mom and dad turn back on their word

  584. and don't take them on the trip to the Grand Canyon,

  585. guess what?

  586. That's not only bad for them,

  587. that brings shame upon mom and dad.

  588. Because our word has bound them up.

  589. Our glory, our praise in their good are now one.

  590. For us to do them good is to our praise.

  591. For us to go back on our word brings us shame

  592. and brings them harm.

  593. Now, mom and dad aren't perfect

  594. on this side of eternity, are we?

  595. Sometimes things happen that we can't control.

  596. Sometimes stuff comes up

  597. that's beyond our ability to control.

  598. But the Lord God never turns back on his word.

  599. The Lord God, by his own grace,

  600. has graciously chosen

  601. to tie up our good with his glory.

  602. David's confidence in the face of death

  603. is that God will bring praise to his name.

  604. But you know what?

  605. It's also his reason to go on living.

  606. He says,

  607. For in death there is no remembrance of you

  608. and Sheol who will bring you praise.

  609. It is fascinating to me.

  610. David, he doesn't just pray to be made well, does he?

  611. There's a reason here for his prayer.

  612. He grounds it in a greater purpose.

  613. He doesn't just pray,

  614. Lord, make me well so I can go back to being king.

  615. Lord, make me well so I'm more comfortable.

  616. Lord, make me well so I feel better.

  617. He roots his request that good might come to him

  618. in the greater purpose of the praise and glory of God.

  619. Do we pray like this?

  620. Do we realize that the purpose of our life

  621. is to glorify God and enjoy him forever?

  622. That the purpose of your life is to bring him praise?

  623. You know, you were made to honor and delight in him

  624. and bring glory to him.

  625. And so David prays,

  626. I want to live so that you might be praised.

  627. I want to be made well again

  628. so that in the face of wickedness of this world

  629. you would have a witness.

  630. He prays,

  631. please heal me, O Lord,

  632. so that you would have yet another reason

  633. to give me so I could give you praise.

  634. You know, I've heard a lot of prayers for healing,

  635. but I'll be honest,

  636. I have not heard a lot of prayers that sound like this.

  637. David wants to be healed

  638. so that he might bring glory to the Lord.

  639. Do you pray like this in our suffering?

  640. And maybe we don't pray like this in our suffering

  641. because we don't live like this

  642. when we're well.

  643. The purpose of our being made well again

  644. is for the glory of God.

  645. If you were sick

  646. and now your mind is no longer foggy,

  647. use it to think clear thoughts about God.

  648. If your body was ailing and weak

  649. and now has regained strength,

  650. use it.

  651. Use your mobility now

  652. to go out and serve him.

  653. If your throat is no longer sore,

  654. use your voice now

  655. to sing his praises

  656. and to speak of him.

  657. That's what they're there for.

  658. Here's our assurance, church,

  659. in the face of affliction.

  660. Our present circumstances

  661. do not change eternal promises.

  662. God has spoken.

  663. Our assurance in the face of any trial

  664. is that God will fulfill his promises

  665. for our good and his glory.

  666. But not only this,

  667. assurance number two,

  668. no matter what happens,

  669. our God hears our prayers.

  670. Our God hears our prayers.

  671. You know, something shocking happens

  672. here in verse eight.

  673. Do you see it?

  674. There is a major shift.

  675. David moves from vertical prayer,

  676. his groaning,

  677. his weeping,

  678. to now horizontal proclamation

  679. in shocking confidence.

  680. In fact, this shift is so drastic

  681. that there's some critical scholars

  682. that say,

  683. well, this must be a mistake.

  684. There must be two different psalms

  685. happening here

  686. that are somehow smashed together.

  687. This sounds like two different people here.

  688. Look there to verse eight.

  689. He just got done saying

  690. how his eyes were wasting away

  691. from grief because of his foes.

  692. But now in verse eight,

  693. he says,

  694. depart from me,

  695. all you workers of evil.

  696. Why?

  697. What's his assurance?

  698. For the Lord has heard

  699. the sound of my weeping.

  700. Depart from me

  701. because the Lord has heard my plea.

  702. The Lord accepts my prayer.

  703. This is the confidence of God's people.

  704. We go from pouring out our heart

  705. to God in prayer,

  706. letting him hear all of our growing,

  707. all of our lamenting,

  708. crying out to him for help.

  709. And then we get up out of the closet

  710. and we walk into this sin-marked world

  711. with confidence.

  712. Why?

  713. Because we know that

  714. even when things are beyond our control,

  715. they're never beyond his control.

  716. Even when things are beyond our understanding,

  717. they are never beyond his understanding.

  718. Even when we can't do anything at all

  719. to change our circumstances,

  720. the Lord is always at work

  721. and he hears our prayers.

  722. In fact,

  723. we know that

  724. even when we don't have the words to say,

  725. like David,

  726. we know

  727. the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  728. For we do not know

  729. what to pray for as we ought,

  730. but the Spirit himself

  731. intercedes for us

  732. with groanings too deep for words.

  733. And he who searches hearts

  734. knows what is the mind of the Spirit,

  735. because the Spirit intercedes for the saints

  736. according to the will of God.

  737. And we know that

  738. for those who love God,

  739. all things work together for good

  740. for those who are called

  741. according to his purpose.

  742. Church,

  743. we are called to pray

  744. to the King of all the earth

  745. with confidence

  746. because he hears us.

  747. He uses our prayers

  748. to accomplish his eternal purposes.

  749. But not only this,

  750. third,

  751. our assurance

  752. in the face of suffering

  753. is that

  754. no matter what happens,

  755. our God

  756. will bring

  757. justice.

  758. Look there to verse 10.

  759. David closes here in verse 10

  760. with the assurance that

  761. all my enemies

  762. shall be ashamed

  763. and greatly troubled.

  764. They shall turn back

  765. and be put to shame

  766. in a moment.

  767. His assurance is that

  768. the God who hears

  769. his prayers,

  770. the God who works

  771. for his good,

  772. the God who will bring

  773. praise to his name,

  774. his God will bring

  775. justice.

  776. On this side of eternity,

  777. the wicked may seem like

  778. they've won.

  779. And the curse of sin

  780. and all its effects

  781. may seem to have won the day,

  782. but David's confidence

  783. is that in a moment,

  784. in the blink of an eye,

  785. all will be made right.

  786. The king of the earth

  787. will do what is right.

  788. The wicked will be judged

  789. and God will right

  790. every wrong.

  791. That's our hope, church.

  792. In all the afflictions

  793. of a sin-cursed world,

  794. we trust with David

  795. that the judge

  796. of all the earth

  797. will do

  798. what is right.

  799. Those were David's assurances.

  800. But we have a fourth,

  801. don't we?

  802. David clung to the promises

  803. of God as clearly

  804. as he knew them,

  805. but we know with much

  806. greater clarity,

  807. don't we,

  808. that all the promises

  809. of God are fulfilled,

  810. are true,

  811. are extended to us

  812. in Jesus Christ.

  813. Blessed assurance,

  814. Jesus is mine.

  815. That's our assurance.

  816. It's likely that

  817. David's trials

  818. are far greater

  819. than ours,

  820. but it's certain

  821. that our assurance

  822. is far more powerful

  823. than his.

  824. We know with absolute certainty

  825. that in all things,

  826. God works for our good

  827. and for his glory.

  828. Why?

  829. Because he who gave up

  830. his own son for us,

  831. how will he not also

  832. along with him

  833. graciously give us

  834. all things?

  835. We know that God

  836. has tied up our good

  837. with his glory.

  838. Why?

  839. Because he sent

  840. his own son

  841. to live

  842. and to die

  843. and to rise

  844. on our behalf

  845. that no one

  846. who trusts in him

  847. will be put to shame

  848. that no matter

  849. what happens

  850. in this life,

  851. if we suffer

  852. with him,

  853. we will also

  854. certainly be glorified

  855. with him.

  856. If we die

  857. with him,

  858. certainly we shall

  859. also live,

  860. be raised with him

  861. that no matter

  862. what happens,

  863. neither death

  864. nor life

  865. nor angels

  866. nor rulers

  867. nor things present

  868. nor things to come

  869. nor powers

  870. nor height

  871. nor depth

  872. nor anything else

  873. in all creation

  874. will be able

  875. to separate us

  876. from the love of God

  877. in Christ Jesus

  878. our Lord.

  879. if the afflictions

  880. of this life

  881. ever feel like

  882. it's too much

  883. to bear,

  884. church,

  885. look to Christ

  886. who was afflicted

  887. for us.

  888. If the sorrows

  889. of this life

  890. feel too much

  891. to bear,

  892. look to Christ

  893. the man of sorrows

  894. well acquainted

  895. with grief.

  896. If we should ever

  897. doubt in the midst

  898. of our trial

  899. that the Lord

  900. cares about us,

  901. look to Christ

  902. on the cross

  903. who came

  904. and suffered

  905. in our place

  906. that any who

  907. trust in him

  908. might be brought

  909. to full healing,

  910. full restoration,

  911. not now,

  912. but in the time

  913. to come.

  914. You will suffer

  915. in this life,

  916. but Christian,

  917. we suffer

  918. with assurance

  919. that Christ

  920. has purchased

  921. for us

  922. a glorious future.

  923. Free from sin,

  924. free from death,

  925. free from sickness,

  926. free from grief,

  927. free from every

  928. affliction,

  929. safe and secure

  930. in the presence

  931. of God.

  932. That's our assurance.

  933. As I left the hospital

  934. from visiting

  935. our friend,

  936. I actually ran into

  937. the palliative care doctor.

  938. He was coming back

  939. from lunch

  940. and I was leaving

  941. to head to the parking lot

  942. and I got to speak

  943. with him for a moment

  944. and he commented

  945. how remarkable

  946. it was

  947. to see someone

  948. suffer so much

  949. and yet speak

  950. so confidently

  951. about their hope

  952. in the Lord.

  953. And I said,

  954. you know what?

  955. She's not afraid

  956. to die.

  957. And he almost

  958. stopped me.

  959. He said,

  960. no, no, no, no,

  961. no, we don't,

  962. that's a bad word

  963. around here.

  964. We don't say

  965. that word.

  966. I had the opportunity

  967. to say,

  968. you know,

  969. a doctor,

  970. she's a Christian.

  971. We talk about death

  972. all the time.

  973. She's not afraid

  974. to die

  975. because she knows

  976. Christ

  977. who has delivered

  978. her soul from death

  979. so that no matter

  980. what happens

  981. in this life,

  982. she has assurance

  983. in the Lord.

  984. Do you have

  985. that same assurance?

  986. Let's pray.

  987. Lord,

  988. you know

  989. the afflictions

  990. that we face.

  991. Father,

  992. you sent Christ

  993. to suffer

  994. and to die

  995. on our behalf

  996. and we know

  997. that all who

  998. follow him,

  999. Lord,

  1000. we will walk

  1001. through many trials

  1002. in this life

  1003. but we take heart,

  1004. Father,

  1005. that Christ

  1006. has overcome

  1007. the world

  1008. and we take heart

  1009. knowing

  1010. that the certain

  1011. future

  1012. that he's purchased

  1013. for us.

  1014. We pray

  1015. that you would

  1016. comfort those

  1017. who are afflicted

  1018. this morning

  1019. with the gospel

  1020. of Christ.

  1021. We pray this

  1022. in Jesus' name.

  1023. Amen.

  1024. What we're going

  1025. to do now

  1026. is respond

  1027. to the Lord.

  1028. Respond to the word

  1029. that we've just heard.

  1030. We'll stand

1031. and sing our last song

1032. together in just a moment

1033. but what I want to do

  1034. and Miss Priscilla

  1035. is going to play

  1036. through a verse.

1037. I want you to just

  1038. sit and respond now

  1039. in silent prayer

  1040. to the Lord.

  1041. What truth stood out

  1042. to you today

  1043. that you need to

  1044. praise God for

  1045. and what application

  1046. is there for you

  1047. to take away?

  1048. What sin is there

  1049. to be repented of?

1050. Take a moment right now

  1051. before we close

1052. and pray to the Lord

  1053. in response.

  1054. Let's pray.
