  1. Amen. If you would please remain standing. Y'all are learning. That's good.

  2. We're going to remain standing as we read God's Word together this morning.

  3. Our sermon text is from Psalm chapter 8.

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  4. So if you would, go ahead and flip there in your Bibles as we read Psalm chapter 8 together.

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  5. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  6. You have set your glory above the heavens.

  7. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes.

  8. To still the enemy and the avenger.

  9. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place.

  10. What is man that you are mindful of him?

  11. And the son of man that you care for him?

  12. Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings.

  13. And crowned him with glory and honor.

  14. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands.

  15. You have put all things under his feet.

  16. All sheep and oxen.

  17. And also the beast of the field.

  18. The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea.

  19. Whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

  20. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  21. This is the Word of God.

  22. If you would please be seated.

  23. Father, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  24. We pray now that you would open up our eyes to see your greatness.

  25. Lord, and to be in awe of you and your incredible wisdom and power and glory and all that you've made.

  26. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  27. Amen.

  28. What is our mission as a church family?

  29. It's hard to believe that about six months ago now,

  30. CW Bay Baptist Church launched out as an autonomous church family.

  31. And part of that process, as you know, was to clarify and to communicate what is our mission?

  32. What is this church going to be about?

  33. What are we doing?

  34. What are we seeking to accomplish here?

  35. And the answer, I'm hoping you can say it along with me,

  36. is that CW Bay exists to magnify the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  37. We've got some work to do.

  38. All right.

  39. We exist to magnify the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  40. We exist for the glory of God.

  41. But I hope that you know, and I want to be clear,

  42. that that process of identifying our mission was not an attempt to be creative.

  43. It was not an attempt to be original.

  44. We want to align our mission with the mission of God.

  45. We want to align our purpose with God's purpose.

  46. And we want to align what we care about with what God cares about.

  47. And you can be sure that God cares about nothing more than the magnification of his glory.

  48. I hope that you can see, I think it's evident, that this is the theme of Psalm chapter 8.

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  49. I love when the Bible makes that clear to us, don't you?

  50. David, he says in the first verse and in the last verse, he bookends this psalm with this one phrase,

  51. Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  52. How majestic is your name.

  53. This is the first psalm of praise in the book of Psalms.

  54. You may have felt this over the past several weeks,

  55. that we've been walking through some pain and some suffering in Psalms 3 through 7.

  56. It's been hard on poor David over the past several weeks.

  57. I was joking with somebody this week earlier that we should have named this sermon series

  58. the summer of suffering this year.

  59. But now you notice the tone changes.

  60. And now David is no longer looking internally at his own circumstances.

  61. He's no longer focusing on his own trials.

  62. Now the praise has shifted up towards the Lord.

  63. And we have no indication here of any suffering.

  64. He's mindful of the praise and the glory of God.

  65. You know, that's the trajectory of the Christian life.

  66. What an encouragement it is for us to know that

  67. no matter what trials we endure here,

  68. no matter what suffering we endure now,

  69. it will give way to glory in the end.

  70. David here, inspired by the Holy Spirit,

  71. he looks out around him at all the incredible works of God

  72. and in it he sees the glory of God.

  73. He knows and he rejoices in this simple and profound truth.

  74. I think that this is the main idea of this psalm,

  75. that God magnifies his glory in all of creation,

  76. especially mankind.

  77. Especially mankind.

  78. So what we're going to see here this morning from Psalm chapter 8

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  79. is two ways that God magnifies his glory.

  80. If you're taking notes, this will be our outline together this morning.

  81. Two ways God magnifies his glory.

  82. God magnifies his glory through the works of his hand

  83. and through the purpose of man.

  84. First, we see God magnifies his glory through the works of his hand.

  85. Look there with me to verse 1.

  86. David says,

  87. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  88. You have set your glory above the heavens.

  89. See, the earth, the creation, is a theater for the glory of God.

  90. It's an arena where we see God's majesty on display.

  91. And that's by design.

  92. God made creation.

  93. He made the earth.

  94. He made all things as an indicator, as a pointer towards his glory.

  95. So that if any part of creation is beautiful to us,

  96. we're meant to ask,

  97. well, how much more beautiful is the creator?

  98. If any part of creation is awe-inspiring for us,

  99. we're meant to ask,

  100. how much more awe-inspiring is the one who made all of this?

  101. If any part of creation is worthy of our attention,

  102. worthy of our devotion,

  103. worthy of our admiration,

  104. we're meant to then notice that

  105. and in turn ask,

  106. how much more worthy of our attention

  107. and devotion and admiration is the creator?

  108. Now, I wonder if you've ever been awestruck

  109. by any part of creation.

  110. Of course you have.

  111. You know how spoiled we are where we live?

  112. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

  113. Anytime we want,

  114. we can pick a morning,

  115. pick a sunrise,

  116. pick a beach,

  117. pick an island,

  118. pick an ocean,

  119. go walk out and sit on the beach

  120. and see God's glory on full display.

  121. We see it all the time,

  122. but are we attentive to it?

  123. Are we listening to the message of creation?

  124. David was.

  125. He says,

  126. how majestic,

  127. oh Lord,

  128. how majestic is your name in all the earth?

  129. You may remember it stormed last Sunday.

  130. We were out spending some time with some other church members

  131. and it stormed

  132. and we could hardly see the road coming back.

  133. I don't know if you were out in the middle of that storm.

  134. We could hardly see where we were going

  135. as we drove back home.

  136. It was just pouring down rain,

  137. this display of the power of God and creation.

  138. And when we got home,

  139. I don't know if you could see this where you were,

  140. but the rain stopped

  141. and the sky out here behind the church,

  142. above the trees,

  143. was this bright pink and purple.

  144. Like I've never seen it before.

  145. It was unbelievable.

  146. The deep color in the back of the field

  147. over the trees in the sky.

  148. And Amanda noticed it first.

  149. She saw it through the blinds

  150. and she said,

  151. guys,

  152. you got to come over here and see this.

  153. She called us over.

  154. We looked out

  155. and we just admired the beauty of the creation.

  156. I went back and I sat down.

  157. I was going back to my book.

  158. She and the boys were staying there,

  159. admiring it.

  160. And I overheard her say to one of the boys,

  161. look at what God has made.

  162. And I thought,

  163. that's exactly right.

  164. And that's the point.

  165. That's what God is doing.

  166. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  167. Psalm 19 tells us

  168. the heavens declare the glory of God

  169. and the skies above proclaim his handiwork.

  170. And the stunning truth

  171. is that everyone sees it.

  172. Everyone hears it.

  173. Everyone who is a part of creation

  174. hears the witness of creation.

  175. Psalm 19,

  176. it tells us,

  177. it goes on,

  178. it says,

  179. day to day pours out speech.

  180. Not just a little bit,

  181. it pours it out.

  182. Day after day,

  183. won't stop talking about the glory of God.

  184. Night to night reveals knowledge.

  185. If you don't know that there is a God,

  186. it's not because God hasn't told you.

  187. If you live in God's creation,

  188. you have heard the testimony of creation.

  189. One night is enough to know.

  190. One day in creation is enough to know

  191. that there is a God

  192. and he is glorious.

  193. We have heard.

  194. Verse 3,

  195. there is no speech.

  196. There are no words whose voice is not heard.

  197. Their voice goes out through all the earth.

  198. Their words go to the end of the world.

  199. Do you realize this is incredibly common knowledge?

  200. All of the earth,

  201. every single person

  202. in every single place

  203. in every single corner of the world

  204. knows that there is a God.

  205. How?

  206. Creation has told them.

  207. This is why Paul tells us in Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  208. that we are without excuse.

  209. Excuse.

  210. If we withhold honor from the living God,

  211. it's not because he hasn't told us he's there.

  212. It's that we have refused to give him the honor

  213. that he's due.

  214. The witness is there.

  215. The name of the Lord is majestic in all the earth.

  216. The question is,

  217. are we listening?

  218. The heavens proclaim his glory,

  219. but not only this,

  220. I love the contrast that we have here

  221. between verse 1 and 2.

  222. It's not only the big things

  223. that describe the glory of God.

  224. I love the contrast here.

  225. God's glory is proclaimed

  226. in the highest heights of heaven

  227. and in the mouths of babies

  228. and infants.

  229. In the smallest and weakest

  230. and most helpless creatures,

  231. he says,

  232. out of the mouth of babies and infants,

  233. you have established strength

  234. because of your foes

  235. to steal the enemy

  236. and the avenger.

  237. Now,

  238. what could this mean?

  239. How does God magnify his name

  240. in the mouth of babies?

  241. I have a guess.

  242. But first,

  243. doesn't this just show you

  244. how God works?

  245. Now,

  246. I wonder if you were facing

  247. an enemy,

  248. if you were up against

  249. a powerful enemy,

  250. if you had all the resources

  251. of the entire world

  252. at your disposal,

  253. I wonder how you would choose

  254. to display your strength.

  255. What would you choose

  256. to steal your enemy?

  257. What would you choose

  258. to go to war for you?

  259. What would you choose?

  260. God says,

  261. I know what I'll do.

  262. I'll silence

  263. the mouth of the enemy

  264. with the mouths of babies

  265. and children.

  266. And we say,

  267. God,

  268. are you sure?

  269. I mean,

  270. look around.

  271. Surely you could find

  272. something better than that,

  273. something stronger,

  274. something more formidable

  275. than that.

  276. But that's just how God works.

  277. God is pleased

  278. to make his glory known

  279. through the weakest

  280. among us.

  281. He wouldn't have it

  282. any other way.

  283. He chooses

  284. the foolish

  285. in the world

  286. to shame

  287. the wise.

  288. He chooses

  289. the weak

  290. in the world

  291. to shame

  292. the strong.

  293. And I'll be honest

  294. with you,

  295. I don't know exactly

  296. how this fits in

  297. and applies

  298. to David's life.

  299. We saw last week

  300. from chapter 7

  301. that others

  302. were speaking evil

  303. of him.

  304. Others were coming

  305. to kill him.

  306. He claimed innocence

  307. from what they were claiming

  308. and saying about him.

  309. It could be,

  310. here's one option,

  311. that despite

  312. what the enemy

  313. said about David,

  314. even children

  315. knew

  316. that he was still

  317. the anointed king.

  318. Despite what others

  319. said about him,

  320. children knew

  321. that he was still

  322. God's anointed king.

  323. That's one possibility.

  324. Now Jesus quotes

  325. this text,

  326. you may recall,

  327. at the triumphal entry

  328. into his city,

  329. into the city

  330. of Jerusalem

  331. in Matthew 21.

  332. He comes in

  333. to the cheers

  334. and the praises

  335. of Hosanna.

  336. Hosanna.

  337. He went in

  338. and he cleared out

  339. the temple

  340. and the children

  341. were there

  342. in the temple,

  343. crying out

  344. in the temple,

  345. Hosanna to the

  346. son of David.

  347. And do you remember

  348. how the chief priests

  349. and the rulers

  350. responded to them?

  351. Make them be quiet.

  352. Silence them.

  353. Do you hear

  354. what they're saying?

  355. Make these children

  356. be quiet.

  357. Stop them

  358. from praising you

  359. as the Messiah.

  360. You are not the king.

  361. Doesn't that sound

  362. a bit like what's going

  363. on here with David?

  364. And how does Jesus

  365. respond?

  366. He says,

  367. haven't you read?

  368. Out of the mouth

  369. of infants

  370. and nursing babies

  371. you have prepared

  372. praise for me,

  373. the true king

  374. of God's people.

  375. God uses the weak

  376. to shame the strong,

  377. but I think

  378. that there's another

  379. layer to this.

  380. So follow with me

  381. just for a moment here.

  382. I think we have

  383. a glimpse here

  384. of how God

  385. plans to magnify

  386. his glory

  387. not only in creation

  388. but also in redemption.

  389. Track with me here

  390. for a minute.

  391. It's interesting to me.

  392. It's interesting,

  393. isn't it,

  394. that David faced

  395. many foes.

  396. He faced many enemies.

  397. He faced Saul.

  398. He faced Absalom.

  399. All the armies

  400. with them.

  401. Verse 2 says

  402. that God has

  403. established strength

  404. because of his foes,

  405. plural,

  406. multiple foes.

  407. But then something

  408. interesting happens

  409. at the end of verse 2.

  410. Do you see it?

  411. It switches

  412. to the singular.

  413. One enemy.

  414. Do you see that?

  415. You have established

  416. strength because

  417. of your foes,

  418. plural,

  419. to steal the enemy

  420. and the avenger.

  421. So follow with me here.

  422. This is my guess.

  423. One great enemy

  424. is silenced

  425. and overcome

  426. by children

  427. giving praise

  428. to the Lord.

  429. What does that

  430. sound like to you?

  431. To me,

  432. that sounds like

  433. God's plan

  434. of redemption.

  435. I think that David

  436. is looking back

  437. to the first chapters

  438. of the book of Genesis.

  439. You remember

  440. what happens

  441. in Genesis?

  442. Chapters 1 through 3.

  443. In the beginning

  444. of the Bible,

  445. God creates

  446. all things.

  447. He sets his glory

  448. in the heavens.

  449. His majestic name

  450. fills all the earth.

  451. And then the enemy

  452. appears.

  453. The serpent

  454. appears.

  455. The great enemy,

  456. Satan,

  457. comes and deceives

  458. Adam,

  459. deceives Eve.

  460. They eat,

  461. they disobey,

  462. they fall,

  463. their union

  464. with the Lord

  465. is broken.

  466. God pronounces

  467. his judgment.

  468. And do you remember

  469. what he said

  470. to the serpent

  471. in Genesis chapter 3?

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  472. I will put enmity

  473. between you

  474. and the woman,

  475. between your offspring

  476. and her offspring.

  477. The Bible,

  478. from this point forward,

  479. is the unfolding

  480. of this war

  481. between the seed

  482. of the serpent

  483. and the seed

  484. of the woman.

  485. But in the end,

  486. one child will come,

  487. one seed of the woman

  488. will come,

  489. he shall bruise your head

  490. and you shall bruise

  491. his heels.

  492. See, the Bible

  493. is a story of God

  494. magnifying his glory.

  495. And how does he

  496. choose to do it?

  497. He triumphs

  498. over the enemy

  499. and all who belong

  500. to him

  501. through a promised

  502. child.

  503. And David

  504. remembers

  505. that God

  506. has promised

  507. a child

  508. will come

  509. who will put

  510. an end

  511. to the enemy

  512. and an end

  513. to his attempted

  514. robbery

  515. of the glory

  516. of God.

  517. A child

  518. will come,

  519. the child

  520. will be bruised

  521. and yet he will

  522. crush the head

  523. of the serpent.

  524. And we know,

  525. don't we,

  526. who this child

  527. is?

  528. Child,

  529. the promised

  530. child

  531. is Christ

  532. Jesus.

  533. We know

  534. that through

  535. this child

  536. many children

  537. will come

  538. to the Father.

  539. That through

  540. this promised

  541. offspring

  542. many will be

  543. born again,

  544. delivered from

  545. belonging to the

  546. kingdom of darkness

  547. and now adopted

  548. into the family

  549. of God.

  550. And it is

  551. their praises

  552. that will be

  553. the unraveling

  554. of all

  555. the enemy's

  556. schemes.

  557. That's my guess.

  558. God magnifies

  559. his glory

  560. through the works

  561. of his hands

  562. in creation

  563. and in

  564. redemption.

  565. Which leads

  566. David to ask

  567. out of all

  568. the works

  569. of creation,

  570. Lord,

  571. what am I

  572. that you're

  573. mindful of me?

  574. What is man

  575. that you're

  576. mindful of him?

  577. Verse 3,

  578. he says,

  579. when I look

  580. at your heavens,

  581. the work

  582. of your fingers,

  583. the moon,

  584. the stars

  585. which you

  586. have set

  587. in place,

  588. what is man

  589. that you're

  590. mindful of him?

  591. The son

  592. of man

  593. that you

  594. care for him.

  595. Who are

  596. we

  597. that we

  598. should receive

  599. any attention

  600. from the

  601. Lord of all

  602. creation?

  603. Do you see

  604. David's

  605. perplexity

  606. here?

  607. Do you

  608. ever feel

  609. that perplexity?

  610. What am I,

  611. God,

  612. that you should

  613. listen to me?

  614. Bring it

  615. all the way

  616. back down

  617. to us.

  618. Get that

  619. image of a

  620. zooming camera

  621. shot in your

  622. mind,

  623. all the way

  624. from the

  625. highest reaches

  626. of outer

  627. space,

  628. as high up

  629. as it goes,

  630. zooming in

  631. through the

  632. planets,

  633. zooming in

  634. through the

  635. sky,

  636. zooming in

  637. over the

  638. earth,

  639. into the

  640. state of

  641. South Carolina,

  642. over the

  643. forest,

  644. over the

  645. waters of

  646. Awe and

  647. Awe,

  648. right here

  649. to Seawee Bay

  650. Baptist

  651. Church.

  652. What are

  653. we?

  654. God is

  655. mindful of

  656. us.

  657. who are

  658. we that

  659. God should

  660. care about

  661. us?

  662. Do you

  663. ever think

  664. about how

  665. incredible

  666. that is?

  667. That our

  668. little songs

  669. blasted out

  670. here Sunday

  671. morning,

  672. 30,

  673. 40,

  674. 50 of us

  675. in the

  676. room,

  677. when we

  678. sing praise

  679. to the

  680. Lord,

  681. the Almighty,

  682. the King

  683. of creation,

  684. that God

  685. hears our

  686. songs and

  687. is pleased

  688. by our

  689. worship.

  690. Does it

  691. ever

  692. astound

  693. you that

  694. our prayers,

  695. when we

  696. pray, I

  697. think we've

  698. prayed maybe

  699. four, five,

  700. six times

  701. together in

  702. service this

  703. morning already,

  704. do our

  705. prayers ever

  706. feel small

  707. to you?

  708. Doesn't it

  709. feel like

  710. God, with

  711. all that he

  712. has going

  713. on in the

  714. world, that

  715. maybe he

  716. just kind

  717. of let

  718. some of

  719. those prayers

  720. from that

  721. little church

  722. and all

  723. and all

  724. slide this

  725. week,

  726. and yet he

  727. bids us,

  728. invites us,

  729. compels us

  730. to come

  731. and ask

  732. him to

  733. move

  734. mountains

  735. and to

  736. ask him

  737. for our

  738. daily bread,

  739. because the

  740. Lord of all

  741. creation is

  742. mindful of

  743. you.

  744. Why?

  745. Because by

  746. his sheer

  747. grace, he

  748. has chosen

  749. to give us

  750. incredible

  751. dignity and

  752. purpose.

  753. There's our

  754. second point

  755. this morning,

  756. the second

  757. way God

  758. magnifies his

  759. name is God

  760. magnifies his

  761. glory in the

  762. purpose of

  763. man.

  764. I want you to

  765. notice David's

  766. posture here.

  767. First, just

  768. listen to what

  769. he doesn't say.

  770. He doesn't say,

  771. look how

  772. wonderful you

  773. are.

  774. Look how

  775. incredible you

  776. are.

  777. Of course God

  778. wants to pay

  779. attention to you.

  780. You're special.

  781. You're full of

  782. potential.

  783. You are wonderful.

  784. Of course God

  785. wants to think

  786. about you.

  787. You're worthy of

  788. God's attention.

  789. Is that what he

  790. says?

  791. No, he says

  792. we are

  793. nothing.

  794. What is man

  795. that God would

  796. be mindful of

  797. us?

  798. We're a speck of

  799. dust compared to

  800. the rest of

  801. creation.

  802. You made the

  803. heavens with

  804. your fingers.

  805. Do you realize

  806. how simple he

  807. makes that

  808. sound?

  809. You set the

  810. moon in its

  811. place.

  812. You set the

  813. stars in their

  814. place.

  815. What are we

  816. that you're

  817. mindful of us?

  818. We are

  819. nothing.

  820. And yet,

  821. verse 5,

  822. yet you have

  823. made him a

  824. little lower

  825. than heavenly

  826. beings and

  827. crowned him

  828. with glory and

  829. honor.

  830. You have given

  831. him dominion

  832. over the works

  833. of your hands.

  834. You have put

  835. all things under

  836. his feet,

  837. all sheep and

  838. oxen and also

  839. the beast of the

  840. field, the birds

  841. of the heavens and

  842. the fish of the

  843. sea, whatever

  844. passes along the

  845. paths of the

  846. seas.

  847. You know,

  848. when we read

  849. this text,

  850. we shouldn't

  851. be puffed up

  852. with how great

  853. we are.

  854. That's not the

  855. point.

  856. We should be

  857. in awe, like

  858. David, at the

  859. undeserved blessing

  860. and attention

  861. and honor given

  862. to us by God.

  863. Any glory, any

  864. honor, any

  865. goodness that you

  866. and I have is

  867. not from us and

  868. it's not for us.

  869. It ought to,

  870. again, point away

  871. from us back to

  872. the one who has

  873. crowned us with

  874. glory and honor.

  875. What does it

  876. say about God?

  877. That the God who

  878. made the heavens

  879. cares about you.

  880. What does it

  881. say about God?

  882. That the God who

  883. is transcendent has

  884. chosen also to be

  885. imminent, to be

  886. near, to be near

  887. to his people.

  888. He has chosen to

  889. make his name known

  890. to us and through

  891. us.

  892. What a privilege

  893. that is.

  894. How does he do

  895. that?

  896. How does he do

  897. that?

  898. Two ways here.

  899. God has given

  900. mankind, all

  901. mankind, two

  902. gifts.

  903. Really two

  904. responsibilities here.

  905. He has given

  906. all mankind

  907. dignity and

  908. dominion.

  909. Just look at the

  910. dignity that he

  911. gives to all

  912. mankind.

  913. Verse 5.

  914. He says he has

  915. crowned us out of

  916. all creation.

  917. He has crowned us

  918. with glory and

  919. honor.

  920. How?

  921. Because we alone

  922. are made, we

  923. talked about it

  924. this morning, in

  925. his what?

  926. In his image.

  927. What other part of

  928. creation can we say

  929. this about?

  930. Mankind alone is

  931. made in the image

  932. of God.

  933. No other part of

  934. creation has this

  935. distinguished honor.

  936. We bear the image

  937. of God.

  938. You know, we were

  939. made to be little

  940. representations of God

  941. walking around on

  942. the earth.

  943. We talked this

  944. morning in the

  945. grow class about

  946. some of the ways

  947. that we can share

  948. and some of the

  949. attributes of God.

  950. Do you realize we

  951. were made to

  952. reflect God's

  953. holiness?

  954. We were made to

  955. reflect God's

  956. goodness.

  957. We were made to

  958. reflect God's

  959. mercy, his love,

  960. his wisdom, his

  961. creativity, his

  962. intelligence, even

  963. his beauty.

  964. Out of all

  965. creation, mankind

  966. especially, was

  967. made to walk

  968. around as

  969. reflections of the

  970. glory of God.

  971. I have a niece

  972. that we saw

  973. last week at the

  974. beach who looks

  975. exactly like my

  976. dad.

  977. It is unbelievable.

  978. There's a picture of

  979. the two of them

  980. sitting on the couch

  981. together and except

  982. for the size

  983. difference and the

  984. hair difference,

  985. you almost can't

  986. tell them apart.

  987. It is unreal.

  988. And if you knew my

  989. dad, if you knew

  990. what he looked like

  991. and then lined my

  992. niece up with about

  993. 20 other little

  994. girls, you would be

  995. able to look at her

  996. and say, that is a

  997. chancy.

  998. And there's no doubt

  999. about it.

  1000. The family resemblance

  1001. is strong.

  1002. She bears his image.

  1003. That is how it's

  1004. supposed to be with

  1005. us, isn't it?

1006. We are made to bear

1007. the image of God so

  1008. that others look at

  1009. us and say, that's

  1010. God's child.

  1011. He looks just like

  1012. the Lord.

  1013. She looks just like

  1014. the Lord.

  1015. And not just

  1016. Christians bear the

  1017. image of God.

  1018. We need to realize

  1019. this.

  1020. All people bear the

  1021. image of God.

  1022. This is what gives

  1023. all mankind

  1024. dignity and honor.

  1025. God has crowned

  1026. all people with glory

  1027. and honor by making

  1028. all people in his

  1029. image.

1030. I talked to Treg this

  1031. week, Monday morning,

  1032. we opened up this

  1033. passage and talked

  1034. through it and he

  1035. said, man, the

  1036. implications of this

  1037. are enormous.

  1038. And they are.

  1039. The applications that

  1040. we could draw from

  1041. that simple fact are

  1042. almost endless.

  1043. But we'll try a few

  1044. here.

  1045. For one, the fact

1046. that we are all made

1047. in the image of God

  1048. is what makes racism

1049. evil in the sight of

  1050. God.

  1051. God.

  1052. If we treat anybody

  1053. differently because

  1054. they look different

1055. than us, could it be

  1056. that we value our

  1057. image more than we

  1058. value God's image?

1059. If we give a higher

  1060. honor to those who

  1061. are wealthy or

  1062. beautiful or have

  1063. use to us

  1064. personally, could it

1065. be that we have a

  1066. different honor system

  1067. than God?

  1068. God has crowned all

  1069. people with dignity

  1070. and honor.

  1071. Shouldn't that

  1072. impact the way

  1073. that we treat

  1074. each other?

  1075. The way that we

  1076. talk to and about

  1077. one another.

  1078. How we love one

  1079. another.

  1080. You know, that person

  1081. that drives you crazy.

  1082. I know you're

  1083. thinking about them

  1084. in your mind right

  1085. now.

  1086. That person that you

  1087. just cannot stand to

  1088. be around.

  1089. That person that,

  1090. if you're honest,

  1091. maybe you hate

  1092. is made in the

  1093. image of God.

  1094. Who are we to

  1095. hate?

  1096. Those whom God

  1097. himself has

  1098. honored and

  1099. crowned with

  1100. dignity and

  1101. glory.

  1102. We have been

  1103. given incredible

  1104. dignity, but not

  1105. only that, second,

  1106. we have been given

  1107. dominion.

  1108. Mankind was made

  1109. to reflect the

  1110. image of God and

  1111. also to rule as

  1112. extensions of the

  1113. authority of God.

  1114. In Genesis chapter

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1115. 1, 28, God gave

  1116. Adam and Eve a

  1117. command.

  1118. He said, be fruitful

  1119. and multiply, fill

  1120. the earth and

  1121. subdue it.

  1122. Have dominion over

  1123. the fish of the

  1124. sea, over the

  1125. birds of the air,

  1126. over every living

  1127. thing that moves.

  1128. David is looking

  1129. back on this

  1130. truth.

  1131. He's reflecting

  1132. back on the

  1133. incredible dominion

  1134. and authority that

  1135. God has given man

  1136. in Genesis 1.

  1137. And he works

  1138. backwards from the

  1139. list.

  1140. You notice that?

  1141. You have given

  1142. him dominion over

  1143. the works of your

  1144. hands, he says.

  1145. You put all things

  1146. under his feet, all

  1147. sheep and oxen, the

  1148. beasts of the

  1149. field, the birds of

  1150. the heavens, the

  1151. fish of the sea,

  1152. whatever passes along

  1153. the paths of the

  1154. seas.

  1155. We were made with

  1156. a purpose to

  1157. exercise dominion over

  1158. all of God's

  1159. creation as

  1160. extensions of his

  1161. good authority.

  1162. You know, that's

  1163. what gives purpose

  1164. to our work.

  1165. Do you know how

  1166. empty it is to

  1167. try to labor to

  1168. build your own

  1169. kingdom and to

  1170. try to labor to

  1171. accumulate riches

  1172. and wealth or

  1173. respect and honor

  1174. that will eventually

  1175. fade away?

  1176. Maybe the reason

  1177. that feels empty

  1178. to us is because

  1179. we were made for

  1180. something much

  1181. greater than that.

  1182. We were made so

  1183. that all of our

  1184. labors, all of our

  1185. efforts, all of our

  1186. work, all of our

  1187. endeavors are meant

  1188. to be extensions of

  1189. God's work, God's

  1190. labors.

  1191. God's effort, God's

  1192. endeavors.

  1193. We were made to

  1194. labor for his

  1195. kingdom, not for

  1196. ours.

  1197. Whatever you do, do

1198. all for the glory of

  1199. God.

  1200. That's the purpose of

  1201. your nine to five.

1202. We are made to fill

  1203. the earth with the

1204. glory of God and to

  1205. labor to usher in

  1206. his kingdom.

  1207. What a privilege that

  1208. is that he's given

  1209. to us.

  1210. David says we're to

  1211. exercise dominion,

  1212. even, David points

  1213. out for us, even

  1214. over the animals.

  1215. Some of us, I

  1216. know, are animal

  1217. people.

  1218. My apologies in

  1219. advance to PETA and

  1220. to all the animal

  1221. people in the room,

  1222. animal lovers

  1223. everywhere.

  1224. I am an animal

  1225. lover, okay, for the

  1226. record.

  1227. I love animals, but

  1228. animals are not our

  1229. equals.

  1230. animals.

  1231. Mankind is made

  1232. superior to the

  1233. animals.

  1234. Animals exist for man,

  1235. not the other way

  1236. around, and it seems

  1237. sometimes like our

  1238. society has lost its

  1239. mind.

1240. Some of you may know

  1241. that we live right

  1242. across the street from

  1243. the Seaweed Visitor

  1244. Center over here.

  1245. They are protecting the

  1246. red wolf population.

1247. You can go and have a

1248. tour of the red wolves

  1249. there.

  1250. I think that that's

  1251. great.

  1252. They are protected.

1253. If you kill a red

  1254. wolf, you get a

  1255. $100,000 fine and

  1256. possibly spend some

  1257. time in prison.

  1258. But we've made it

  1259. perfectly acceptable

1260. to kill a child in

  1261. the womb of their

  1262. mother in the first

  1263. trimester with no

  1264. consequence.

  1265. It's insane.

  1266. Do you realize how

1267. insane it is to live

  1268. in a world where

  1269. animals have greater

  1270. protection than

  1271. children who are made

  1272. in the image of

  1273. God?

  1274. We have everything

  1275. twisted up.

  1276. I don't know about

  1277. you, but when I

  1278. look around and I

  1279. see the wickedness

  1280. in the world around

1281. us, when I look in

1282. the mirror and I see

  1283. the wickedness in the

1284. mirror as I look at

  1285. myself, I have a

  1286. hard time seeing

  1287. glory and honor.

  1288. Don't you?

  1289. This psalm, as with

  1290. many of the psalms,

  1291. they give us a

  1292. picture of the

  1293. ideal.

1294. This is the ideal man

  1295. represented here.

1296. This is who Adam was

  1297. meant to be.

1298. This is who you and I

  1299. were meant to be.

  1300. So what happened?

  1301. What happened was sin.

1302. You know, when we read

  1303. this text, something

  1304. ought to be happening

  1305. within us.

  1306. The alarms of our

  1307. heart.

1308. When we read this text,

1309. it says, you were made

  1310. to reflect the glory

  1311. of God.

  1312. You were made to

  1313. magnify his glory.

1314. You were made to be

  1315. his representatives here

  1316. on earth.

1317. God made you for him

  1318. and his glory.

  1319. The alarms of your

1320. heart ought to be going

1321. off and saying, that is

  1322. true.

  1323. I know I was made for

  1324. that.

1325. That is why I'm here.

  1326. That's what I was made

  1327. for.

1328. That's the purpose of my

  1329. life.

1330. And yet, I have fallen

  1331. so short.

  1332. That's sin.

  1333. All have sinned and

  1334. fallen short of the

  1335. glory of God.

  1336. Everything was distorted

  1337. and twisted and warped

1338. and messed up by Adam's

  1339. sin.

1340. We still bear the image

1341. of God, but that image

1342. is so hard to tell because

  1343. it's been dragged through

1344. the mud of our own

  1345. sinfulness.

  1346. We still have the

  1347. authority, the

  1348. responsibility to exercise

  1349. dominion, to rule, to

1350. work, to labor, but we

1351. want to rule, to work, to

1352. labor for our kingdom, for

1353. our glory, not for his.

  1354. We have inherited Adam's

1355. failure, and with it, we've

1356. inherited all of the curse

  1357. of sin.

  1358. But, but,

1359. we praise God that he did

1360. not leave us in our sin.

1361. We praise God that he has

  1362. mercifully and graciously

  1363. provided a way of escape, a

1364. way of renewal, a way of

  1365. restoration that magnifies

  1366. his glorious name.

1367. He sent a child to silence

  1368. the enemy.

1369. He sent Christ, the true

  1370. and better Adam.

1371. As Hebrews 2, we just

  1372. read it this morning,

1373. reminds us, God made him

1374. a little while lower than

1375. the angels and crowned him

  1376. with glory and honor,

  1377. putting everything in

  1378. subjection to his feet.

1379. We see him who for a

  1380. little while was made

  1381. lower than the angels.

  1382. Who?

  1383. Namely, Jesus.

  1384. Crowned with glory and

  1385. honor because of the

  1386. suffering of death, so

1387. that by the grace of God

  1388. he might taste death

  1389. for everyone.

  1390. The first Adam

  1391. failed, and with his

  1392. failure brought sin and

  1393. death.

  1394. But the second Adam,

  1395. Christ Jesus, the very

1396. image of the invisible God,

  1397. crowned with glory and

  1398. honor, came to restore

1399. all that was lost in the

  1400. fall.

  1401. That's the gospel, church.

1402. The kids have been talking

  1403. in children's ministry.

1404. Miss Regina has them deep

1405. in the weeds of theology.

  1406. I love it.

  1407. Apparently, they came

1408. across the topic in their

  1409. curriculum that made them

  1410. think about this question.

1411. How is Adam like Christ?

1412. How is Adam like Jesus?

1413. Adam, the first man, God's

1414. first human being, and Jesus

1415. Christ, the God man, how are

  1416. they alike?

1417. And so in Miss Regina's

1418. wisdom, she did as every

1419. good parent or teacher does,

  1420. and she bribed them.

1421. She said, go ask one of your

1422. pastors that question, and if

1423. you do, and if they come back

1424. with a response, if you bring

1425. back the answer to the rest of

1426. the class, I will give you a

  1427. prize, a Chick-fil-A gift card,

1428. which to my kids is worth a

  1429. thousand dollars, at least.

1430. Amanda, she filled me in on

1431. this scheme, so I expected

1432. them to come, and I waited,

1433. but one week went by, nobody

1434. asked me, and to be honest, I

1435. was a little relieved, because

1436. I was trying in my own mind to

1437. think through, how can I explain

  1438. this to a child?

  1439. I think I understand it myself.

1440. I think I can point them to

1441. scripture where it says it, but

1442. how do I make it simple enough,

1443. not only for them to understand,

1444. but for them to understand and

1445. then go articulate it to other

1446. people, bring it back to their

  1447. teacher.

1448. The next week went by, two

1449. weeks to come up with an

1450. answer, and one of them asked,

1451. how is Adam like Jesus?

1452. And so I said something like

1453. this, I said, well, Adam was

1454. made in the image of God.

1455. He was the first man, and he was

1456. given a job to represent God and

1457. to exercise dominion over all

1458. creation, but Adam failed and

1459. Jesus is the new Adam.

  1460. He's the second Adam.

  1461. He's the true Adam.

  1462. He's the better Adam.

1463. He succeeds where the first Adam

  1464. failed.

1465. He said, how are they alike?

  1466. I didn't answer the question

  1467. satisfactorily.

  1468. So I tried again.

1469. I said, they are alike because

  1470. they both represent us.

  1471. They're representers, meaning we

  1472. get what they earn.

1473. By nature, we get what Adam has

1474. earned, his sin and death with it,

1475. the consequence of the fall.

1476. But by new nature given through

1477. faith, we get what Christ has

  1478. earned.

1479. We get his righteousness and life

1480. and restored relationship with God.

1481. Christ, he lived in our place.

1482. He died in our place.

1483. He rose in our place so that through

1484. faith in him, we might be restored

1485. and be truly human again.

1486. And he said, what do I tell Miss

  1487. Regina?

  1488. So I said, okay.

1489. Again, Adam is like Christ because

  1490. they both represent us.

1491. everyone in the world, everyone in

1492. this room is represented by one or

  1493. the other.

1494. You are either in Adam or you are in

  1495. Christ.

1496. But that's about where the similarities

  1497. end.

1498. And I came up with this little rhyme to

  1499. help it stick.

1500. All in Adam bear his sin, but all in

  1501. Christ are new again.

1502. All in Adam bear his sin.

  1503. That's everyone.

1504. That's everyone by natural birth.

1505. Everyone bears his sin, this distorted

1506. image of God, this selfish inward

1507. labor, inward purpose, inward building

  1508. of our own kingdom.

1509. Does that sound like you?

1510. But all who are in Christ, who by the

1511. grace of God have been redeemed, who

1512. trust in the perfect son of man, all

1513. who are in Christ are new again.

1514. We are remade into the image of God.

1515. We are repurposed for his glory.

1516. And so now by his grace, we labor to

1517. usher forth his kingdom, not ours.

1518. Now we, by his grace, live as children

1519. of God for the glory of God.

1520. And in Christ, we are crowned

1521. undeservedly with glory and honor.

1522. If you are in Christ, church, that is

  1523. your purpose.

  1524. That is your dignity.

1525. That is what we were made for.

1526. We exist to magnify the glory of God in

1527. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  1528. Christ.

1529. Oh Lord, how majestic is your name in all

  1530. the earth.

1531. Would you pray with me?

1532. Lord, we see so clearly what you have

  1533. made us for.

  1534. It's not for ourselves.

1535. It's not for our glory.

1536. It's not for our kingdom.

1537. It's not for our honor.

1538. Lord, it is for you and about you.

1539. And it's from you, God, that we are made

1540. back into your holy image.

1541. Lord, we pray if there are any here,

1542. Father, who remain in Adam,

1543. we pray that you would give them

  1544. faith in Christ.

1545. And Lord, if there are any here who are

  1546. struggling with their purpose,

1547. with their identity, Lord, would you remind

1548. them of who you have made them to be in him.

1549. We love you, Lord, and we pray all this

  1550. in Christ's name.

  1551. Amen.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. Amen.

  1554. Amen.

  1555. Amen.

  1556. Amen.

  1557. Amen.

  1558. Amen.

  1559. Amen.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Amen.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Amen.

  1565. Amen.

  1566. Amen.

  1567. Amen.

  1568. Amen.
