  1. Amen. If you would, please take your Bibles and open them up to John chapter 10 this morning.

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 10. This is one of the most beautiful pictures, I believe, in all of Scripture of who Jesus is and how He cares for His people.

    John 10 chapter mention

  3. John chapter 10. Our passage this morning will be John 10, 1 through 21.

    John 10 chapter mention

  4. And when you found that in your Bibles, if you would stand as I read the Word of God.

  5. Amen.

  6. He says,

  7. I speak now, Lord, that your sheep would hear your voice in your Word. We pray in Christ's name. Amen.

  8. I hope that you realize the depth and the richness of what we just sang together.

  9. We were talking about it with the music team before the service started and some of them knew the song, some of them didn't.

  10. And Miss Ann called it an oldie but a goodie.

  11. There's a lot of rich truth there in that hymn, isn't there?

  12. And we see all of it here in our passage this morning in John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  13. The question we've been asking, who is Jesus?

  14. And the answer that we've seen time and time and time again as we've walked through the Gospel of John,

  15. Jesus is the Christ.

  16. Jesus is the Messiah.

  17. Jesus is the Son of God.

  18. And here in our passage this morning, we see Jesus is the shepherd of his sheep.

  19. He's the door of the sheep.

  20. He's the owner and the Savior of his own.

  21. Look there with me to chapter 10, verse 1.

  22. And I want you to have your Bibles open.

  23. I love that you might trust me, that what I'm telling you is God's Word.

  24. I don't want you to trust me that much.

  25. I want you to see it with your own eyes.

  26. The Word of God, John 10, verse 1.

    John 10:1

  27. Jesus is continuing a conversation that he started last week.

  28. You may remember last week that Jesus healed the man born blind.

  29. He had mercy on him.

  30. He saw him.

  31. He opened up his eyes.

  32. That man was then brought to the religious leaders, to the Pharisees.

  33. And rather than glorifying God for this miraculous work that's been done in this man's life,

  34. rather than receiving him and rejoicing in the work that's been done, what happened?

  35. They interrogated him.

  36. They ridiculed him.

  37. They mocked him.

  38. And then they rejected him.

  39. They cast him out of the synagogue.

  40. So the last thing that Jesus said to the Pharisees at the end of chapter 9 last week

  41. was that they are spiritually blind

  42. blind and that they are bearing their own guilt.

  43. And it's in that context of that conversation that our passage this morning picks up.

  44. Look there with me to verses 1 through 5.

  45. 1 through 5 set the stage for the rest of the chapter.

  46. He says,

  47. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  48. he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way,

  49. that man is a thief and a robber.

  50. But he who enters the door by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  51. To him the gatekeeper opens.

  52. The sheep hear his voice.

  53. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  54. And when he has brought out all his own, he goes before them.

  55. The sheep follow him for they know his voice.

  56. A stranger they will not follow,

  57. but they will flee from him for they do not know the voice of a stranger.

  58. Clearly, Jesus is again, he's telling them a sort of parable.

  59. John calls it a figure of speech.

  60. He's drawing from everyday experiences, everyday knowledge,

  61. in order to make a point, to give a lesson about who he is.

  62. And so here he's drawing from their common understanding of shepherding.

  63. I don't know how much shepherding you have done in your life.

  64. I know several of you are animal people,

  65. and maybe you have a little bit of knowledge of what shepherding looks like,

  66. but shepherding in ancient Israel was done a little bit differently than it's done today.

  67. And we need to understand the cultural context here

  68. so that we understand the fullness of the picture that Jesus is giving us here.

  69. So in this culture, oftentimes an entire town or an entire village would share one sheep pen.

  70. And during the day, the owners of the sheep, they would bring their sheep,

  71. if they had other business to attend to during the day,

  72. they would bring their sheep into this sheep pen.

  73. They would bring them in through the door.

  74. They would pay a gatekeeper there who would open up the door.

  75. He would know who came and who went.

  76. And at the end of the day, whenever it's time to come and collect your sheep,

  77. the shepherd would come in through the door.

  78. The gatekeeper would recognize the shepherd.

  79. He would know who the shepherd was.

  80. He would open up the door for the shepherd.

  81. And here's what's amazing.

  82. The shepherd would look into that sheep pen,

  83. and out of all the town's sheep,

  84. out of all the many sheep that were gathered together in that sheep pen,

  85. he would look out,

  86. and he would know exactly which sheep were his.

  87. I know that one there.

  88. That one's mine.

  89. That one there.

  90. That one's mine.

  91. That one there.

  92. Those two, three scattered here, here, here.

  93. Those are mine.

  94. And then, what's even more remarkable,

  95. is he would begin calling out to the sheep,

  96. even by name.

  97. He would call them by name.

  98. Come on, Wooly.

  99. Come on, little Bo.

  100. Come on.

  101. And his sheep, out of every noise that they heard throughout the day,

  102. would recognize the voice of their shepherd,

  103. and they would come to him.

  104. Follow him.

  105. Follow his voice.

  106. Go to be with him.

  107. It's a beautiful picture, isn't it?

  108. It's a beautiful picture of salvation.

  109. It's a beautiful picture of who Jesus is,

  110. of who his people are,

  111. of how anybody becomes his people,

  112. of how he knows and loves and cares for his people.

  113. But verse 6, it tells us that the Pharisees,

  114. they hear this,

  115. and they still didn't get the message.

  116. You know, sometimes the Pharisees, bless them,

  117. they're a little bit slow.

  118. And so Jesus, here in verses 7 through 18,

  119. almost the rest of the passage here,

  120. he expands on the metaphor.

  121. And he uses this shepherding imagery

  122. to give us two more answers to the question,

  123. who is Jesus?

  124. This is our outline this morning.

  125. If you're a note taker,

  126. we're going to see two more answers to the question,

  127. who is Jesus?

  128. Jesus is the door of the sheep,

  129. and Jesus is the shepherd of the sheep.

  130. First, he says,

  131. I am the door of the sheep.

  132. Look there to verse 10 with me.

  133. The Pharisees are confused,

  134. and so Jesus again said to them,

  135. truly, truly, I say to you,

  136. I am the door of the sheep.

  137. All who came before me are thieves and robbers,

  138. but the sheep did not listen to them.

  139. I am the door.

  140. If anyone enters by me,

  141. he will be saved,

  142. and will go in and out,

  143. and find pasture.

  144. The thief comes only to steal,

  145. and kill, and destroy.

  146. I came that they may have life,

  147. and have it abundantly.

  148. This is yet another one of the I am statements

  149. in the Gospel of John.

  150. We've seen a few of these already.

  151. We'll see several more.

  152. We have two of them here in this passage.

  153. I am the door.

  154. I am the good shepherd.

  155. This is intentional language by Jesus here

  156. to tell us,

  157. to tell the Pharisees,

  158. to tell any who's listening to him,

  159. that he is the I am.

  160. He is God in the flesh.

  161. Here he says,

  162. I am the door of the sheep.

  163. What does that teach us about Jesus?

  164. Let's think about this for a minute.

  165. For one,

  166. this teaches us that

  167. Jesus is the one way

  168. into the one flock of God.

  169. I am the door of the sheep.

  170. Jesus is the one way

  171. into the one flock of God.

  172. Now place yourself

  173. in the Pharisees' shoes here.

  174. This is very, very different

  175. from how the Jews understood

  176. how they belonged to God.

  177. They thought that they belonged to God

  178. by virtue of their physical belonging,

  179. their physical, natural birth.

  180. They were born into the Jewish people of God,

  181. so they thought that they belonged to God.

  182. Well, Jesus says,

  183. not so fast.

  184. There's a door,

  185. and you have to enter through the door.

  186. This is also very different

  187. from the modern conception,

  188. modern understanding

  189. of how anyone might belong to God.

  190. First of all,

  191. we don't want to think

  192. that we're sheep, do we?

  193. We think that we're independent.

  194. We're self-sufficient.

  195. We got this on our own.

  196. We don't need anybody to own us,

  197. to lead us,

  198. to guide us.

  199. If there's a shepherd,

  200. the shepherd does our bidding.

  201. The shepherd serves at our pleasure.

  202. That's what the modern mind thinks.

  203. And more than this,

  204. in the modern mind,

  205. if there is a people of God,

  206. and if there is a fence

  207. that marks off the boundaries

  208. of the people of God

  209. from the rest of the world,

  210. then surely that fence

  211. is filled with doors.

  212. That fence is covered with doors.

  213. And certainly,

  214. we can come in and out

  215. as we please on our own terms.

  216. We can enter any which way we want.

  217. Jesus says again,

  218. not so fast,

  219. there is one door.

  220. I am the door,

  221. not a door.

  222. And you must enter through the door.

  223. Enter by the narrow gate,

  224. he says in Matthew.

  225. Enter by the narrow gate,

  226. for the gate is wide,

  227. and the way is easy

  228. that leads to destruction,

  229. and those who enter by it are many.

  230. For the gate is narrow,

  231. and the way is hard

  232. that leads to life,

  233. and those who find it are few.

  234. It is not hateful,

  235. despite what you may hear.

  236. It is not bigoted.

  237. It is not narrow-minded

  238. to say that there is one way

  239. in to the people of God.

  240. We ought to instead marvel

  241. that there is a door.

  242. Be in awe of the grace of God

  243. that there is a door.

  244. There is a path.

  245. There is an open door

  246. for sinners like us

  247. to enter into the people of God.

  248. We ought to be astounded

  249. by the grace of God

  250. that he has given us a door.

  251. Instead, the modern mind scoffs

  252. and rejects

  253. and laughs at the door.

  254. Not only this.

  255. We see that this teaches us

  256. that Jesus is the one path

  257. to true life.

  258. Jesus is the one path

  259. to true life.

  260. Look again what it says.

  261. He says,

  262. I am the door.

  263. If anyone enters by me,

  264. what happens?

  265. He says,

  266. He will be saved

  267. and will go in and out

  268. and find pasture.

  269. And again,

  270. in verse 10,

  271. he says,

  272. The thief comes only to steal

  273. and to kill

  274. and to destroy.

  275. I came

  276. that they may have life

  277. and have it abundantly.

  278. Do you see the picture

  279. of what Jesus offers

  280. to his people here?

  281. Why do you come to Jesus?

  282. Why do you come to God

  283. through the door of Jesus Christ?

  284. I hope it's not just

  285. to escape the wrath of God.

  286. Certainly, that's part of it.

  287. What does it say again here?

  288. He says,

  289. If anyone enters by me,

  290. he will be saved.

  291. Saved from what?

  292. Saved from the wrath of God

  293. against our sin.

  294. That's good reason

  295. to turn to Jesus,

  296. but there is so much more here.

  297. He will be saved, yes,

  298. and he will go in and out

  299. and find pasture.

  300. These are happy,

  301. healthy,

  302. well-fed,

  303. joyful sheep here.

  304. He will be saved, yes,

  305. and he will have

  306. abundance of life.

  307. He will be saved,

  308. and he will have

  309. true freedom,

  310. true blessing,

  311. true and lasting peace,

  312. fullness of life

  313. here and now

  314. and into eternity.

  315. I don't want us

  316. just to come to Christ

  317. once out of fear,

  318. but to come to him again

  319. and again

  320. and again

  321. and again

  322. out of love for him,

  323. out of satisfaction

  324. in him,

  325. that we would come

  326. to the door

  327. and come through the door

  328. into the pasture

  329. of God's presence

  330. daily,

  331. come to him

  332. out of love.

  333. Everyone in the world

  334. is looking for

  335. peace like this,

  336. aren't we?

  337. Everyone in the world

  338. is looking for blessing,

  339. for satisfaction,

  340. for pasture.

  341. church,

  342. they need to be led

  343. to the door

  344. and through the door

  345. into the joy

  346. of knowing God.

  347. A good shepherd

  348. will lead the sheep

  349. through the door

  350. into the blessing

  351. of the flock.

  352. This is exactly

  353. what Jesus has

  354. against the Pharisees

  355. here,

  356. isn't it?

  357. Look there,

  358. look there again.

  359. It says,

  360. Jesus says,

  361. the leaders

  362. of the people

  363. of Israel

  364. have not been

  365. good shepherds.

  366. There's a contrast

  367. here in the passage,

  368. isn't there?

  369. Between Jesus Christ

  370. who is the door

  371. and all the thieves

  372. and the robbers

  373. who came before him.

  374. That's the contrast

  375. that we see.

  376. Verse 8,

  377. all who came before me

  378. are thieves and robbers

  379. but the sheep

  380. did not listen

  381. to them.

  382. These thieves

  383. and robbers,

  384. they don't come

  385. through the door.

  386. They hop the fence,

  387. they avoid the door,

  388. they sneak in

  389. any which way

  390. they can,

  391. and they try

  392. to come in

  393. undetected,

  394. not to bless

  395. the sheep,

  396. not to love

  397. the sheep,

  398. but to steal

  399. them away,

  400. to harm the sheep,

  401. to destroy the sheep.

  402. Who's he talking

  403. about here?

  404. Who's he talking

  405. about here?

  406. There's a few options,

  407. they're good options,

  408. but I think he's

  409. talking about

  410. the religious leaders.

  411. If you think

  412. about the context

  413. here again,

  414. remember,

  415. at chapter 9,

  416. Jesus has just

  417. healed this man

  418. born blind,

  419. called him

  420. to faith in himself,

  421. and how did

  422. the religious leaders

  423. respond?

  424. Those who were

  425. supposed to care

  426. for the sheep,

  427. how did they respond?

  428. They brutalized

  429. the sheep,

  430. discarded him,

  431. humiliated him.

  432. We should know

  433. that God does not

  434. mess around

  435. with this.

  436. in every generation,

  437. God has given

  438. his people

  439. leaders,

  440. shepherds,

  441. not the shepherd,

  442. but under shepherds,

  443. those who are stewards

  444. to care for

  445. the flock

  446. of God,

  447. and they are

  448. accountable to God

  449. for how they care

  450. for God's sheep.

  451. I want you

  452. to flip over

  453. to Ezekiel 34.

  454. I want you

  455. to actually go there.

  456. because this is

  457. a longer passage.

  458. I want you to see it

  459. with your eyes.

  460. It's a longer passage.

  461. I think that it would

  462. help you to see it,

  463. and when you get there,

  464. if you mark in your Bibles,

  465. in the margin there

  466. beside Ezekiel 34,

  467. I want you to

  468. just write a note

  469. that says John 10,

  470. and then when you

  471. get back to John 10,

  472. I'd love for you

  473. to write a note

  474. that says Ezekiel 34.

  475. I want you to see

  476. the connection here

  477. between these two passages,

  478. and I'm rambling

  479. so that you can find it

  480. in your Bibles.

  481. Have you got there yet?

  482. All right.

  483. Ezekiel 34.

  484. The word of the Lord

  485. came to me.

  486. Son of man,

  487. prophesy against

  488. the shepherds

  489. of Israel.

  490. Prophesy and say to them,

  491. even to the shepherds,

  492. thus says the Lord God,

  493. ah, shepherds of Israel

  494. who have been feeding

  495. yourselves,

  496. should not shepherds

  497. feed the sheep?

  498. Do you see it?

  499. You eat the fat,

  500. you clothe yourselves

  501. with the wool,

  502. you slaughter the fat ones,

  503. but you do not feed

  504. the sheep.

  505. The weak you have not

  506. strengthened,

  507. the sick you have not

  508. healed,

  509. the injured you have not

  510. bound up,

  511. the strayed you have not

  512. brought back,

  513. the lost you have not

  514. sought,

  515. and with force and harshness

  516. you have ruled over them.

  517. So they were scattered

  518. because there was no shepherd,

  519. and they became food

  520. for all the wild beasts.

  521. My sheep were scattered.

  522. They wandered over all

  523. the mountains and on

  524. every high hill.

  525. My sheep were scattered

  526. over all the face of the

  527. earth with none to search

  528. or seek for them.

  529. Verse 7,

  530. Therefore you shepherds

  531. hear the word of the Lord.

  532. As I live,

  533. declares the Lord God,

  534. surely because my sheep

  535. have become a prey,

  536. and my sheep have become

  537. food for all the wild beasts,

  538. since there was no shepherd,

  539. and because my shepherds

  540. have not searched for my sheep,

  541. but the shepherds

  542. have fed themselves

  543. and have not fed my sheep.

  544. Therefore you shepherds

  545. hear the word of the Lord.

  546. Thus says the Lord God,

  547. Behold,

  548. I am against the shepherds,

  549. and I will require my sheep

  550. at their hand,

  551. and put a stop

  552. to their feeding the sheep.

  553. No longer shall the shepherds

  554. feed themselves.

  555. I will rescue my sheep

  556. from their mouths

  557. that they may not be food

  558. for them.

  559. This is an indictment

  560. on the bad shepherds

  561. of Israel.

  562. So what's the solution?

  563. What's God's answer

  564. to the bad shepherds?

  565. Verse 11,

  566. For thus says the Lord God,

  567. Behold,

  568. I,

  569. I myself,

  570. will search for my sheep

  571. and will seek them out.

  572. As a shepherd seeks out

  573. his flock when he is among

  574. his sheep that have been scattered,

  575. so will I seek out my sheep,

  576. and I will rescue them

  577. from all places

  578. where they've been scattered

  579. on a day of clouds

  580. and thick darkness,

  581. and I will bring them out

  582. from the peoples

  583. and gather them

  584. from the countries

  585. and will bring them

  586. into their own land,

  587. and I will feed them

  588. on the mountains of Israel

  589. by the ravines

  590. and in all the inhabited places

  591. of the country.

  592. I will feed them

  593. with good pasture,

  594. and on the mountain heights

  595. of Israel

  596. shall be their grazing land.

  597. Then they shall lie down

  598. in the good grazing land,

  599. and on rich pasture

  600. they shall feed

  601. on the mountains of Israel.

  602. I myself will be

  603. the shepherd of my sheep,

  604. and I will make them

  605. lie down,

  606. declares the Lord God.

  607. I will seek the lost.

  608. I will bring back the strayed.

  609. I will bind up the injured.

  610. I will strengthen the weak

  611. and the fat and the strong.

  612. I will destroy.

  613. I will feed them in justice.

  614. God says,

  615. you religious leaders

  616. who pride yourself

  617. on being shepherds

  618. have avoided the door,

  619. have climbed in

  620. every which way you could,

  621. have failed to care

  622. for my sheep.

  623. You harm the sheep,

  624. and you care for yourselves.

  625. A good shepherd

  626. would not do that.

  627. A good shepherd

  628. would lead the sheep,

  629. love the sheep,

  630. by leading them

  631. through the one door

  632. into the blessing

  633. of God.

  634. There's a lesson here,

  635. isn't there?

  636. For shepherds

  637. and for sheep.

  638. For shepherds,

  639. you know that's the word

  640. for pastor.

  641. Shepherds.

  642. Good shepherds

  643. point the sheep

  644. to Jesus.

  645. every opportunity

  646. that they have.

  647. Good shepherds

  648. feed the sheep

  649. with the words

  650. of Christ.

  651. Direct them

  652. to the blessing

  653. of Christ.

  654. Remind them

  655. of their belonging

  656. to Christ.

  657. Teach them

  658. to live

  659. as God's sheep.

  660. Good shepherds

  661. lead the sheep

  662. through the door

  663. to God

  664. as often

  665. as they can.

  666. They point the sheep

  667. to Jesus,

  668. not to themselves,

  669. because ultimately

  670. shepherds

  671. are sheep too.

  672. And sheep,

  673. those who belong

  674. to Christ,

  675. those who temporarily

  676. are placed

  677. under the care

  678. of earthly

  679. sheep shepherds,

  680. fix your eyes

  681. on Christ.

  682. Listen for the voice

  683. of Christ

  684. through the voice

  685. of your shepherds.

  686. Listen to the voice

  687. of Christ

  688. and flee

  689. as far

  690. and as fast

  691. as you possibly

  692. can

  693. from any

  694. shepherd

  695. who would

  696. lead you

  697. away from him.

  698. God says

  699. to the leaders

  700. of Israel,

  701. you shepherds

  702. have failed

  703. miserably.

  704. But you know what?

  705. I'm going to do it

  706. myself.

  707. I'll do it

  708. myself.

  709. I will seek

  710. out my sheep

  711. and I

  712. myself

  713. will care

  714. for them.

  715. I will be

  716. the shepherd.

  717. And so Jesus

  718. here in our

  719. second point

  720. this morning,

  721. second answer

  722. to the question,

  723. who is Jesus?

  724. He says,

  725. I

  726. am the good

  727. shepherd.

  728. shepherd.

  729. I

  730. am the

  731. shepherd

  732. of the

  733. sheep.

  734. Look there

  735. to verse 11.

  736. He says,

  737. I am the good

  738. shepherd.

  739. The good

  740. shepherd lays

  741. down his

  742. life for

  743. the sheep.

  744. And where

  745. before the

  746. contrast was

  747. between the

  748. door and

  749. the thieves

  750. and the

  751. robbers who

  752. attempt to

  753. avoid the

  754. door and

  755. come in to

  756. harm the

  757. sheep,

  758. here the

  759. contrast is

  760. between Jesus,

  761. the good

  762. shepherd,

  763. and those

  764. who he

  765. calls a

  766. hired hand.

  767. So look

  768. there at the

  769. contrast here

  770. in verse 12.

  771. He says,

  772. he who is a

  773. hired hand

  774. and not a

  775. shepherd,

  776. who does not

  777. own the

  778. sheep,

  779. sees the

  780. wolf coming

  781. and what

  782. happens?

  783. He leaves

  784. the sheep

  785. and he

  786. flees.

  787. And the

  788. wolf comes

  789. and snatches

  790. them up and

  791. scatters them.

  792. He flees.

  793. Why?

  794. Because he's a

  795. hired hand and

  796. he cares nothing

  797. for the

  798. sheep.

  799. You realize

  800. it's so hard

  801. to find good

  802. help?

  803. Anybody

  804. have that

  805. problem?

  806. Hard to

  807. find good

  808. help?

  809. I was

  810. talking with

  811. Treg this

  812. week about

  813. his land.

  814. We had

  815. breakfast

  816. Wednesday

  817. morning.

  818. He and

  819. Regina bought

  820. some land

  821. over here

  822. planning on

  823. building and

  824. building a

  825. house developing

  826. over there.

  827. They had

  828. their last

  829. pre-construction

  830. meeting this

  831. week and

  832. Treg said,

  833. I am so

  834. excited that I

  835. have a rental

  836. unit that's

  837. close by my

  838. land because I

  839. cannot wait to

  840. get over there

  841. every single

  842. day and

  843. check in on

  844. the contractors.

  845. I was like,

  846. man,

  847. they're going

  848. to hate

  849. you.

  850. But I

  851. get it.

  852. Right?

  853. Because it's

  854. so easy for

  855. the hired

  856. hand to

  857. cut corners,

  858. to make

  859. mistakes,

  860. to cover it

  861. up, to not

  862. care deeply

  863. about what

  864. ultimately does

  865. not belong to

  866. him.

  867. But the

  868. owner of the

  869. land, he's

  870. going to be

  871. by there every

  872. day.

  873. Make sure

  874. that what

  875. belongs to

  876. him is

  877. taken care

  878. of.

  879. And so it

  880. is here with

  881. Jesus.

  882. Jesus says he

  883. is the good

  884. shepherd of

  885. the sheep.

  886. He owns

  887. the sheep.

  888. The sheep

  889. belong to

  890. him.

  891. God the

  892. Father gave

  893. them to

  894. Jesus and

  895. Jesus purchased

  896. the sheep at

  897. great price.

  898. 1 Corinthians

  899. 6 tells us

  900. you are not

  901. your own

  902. Christian.

  903. you were

  904. bought at

  905. a price.

  906. And so

  907. Paul tells

  908. pastors,

  909. shepherds in

  910. Acts 20

  911. 28, be

  912. careful, pay

  913. careful attention

  914. to yourselves

  915. and to all

  916. the flock in

  917. which the

  918. Holy Spirit

  919. has made

  920. you overseers

  921. to care for

  922. the church

  923. of God

  924. which he

  925. obtained with

  926. his own

  927. blood.

  928. Ephesians 5,

  929. Paul tells

  930. husbands in

  931. Ephesians 5,

  932. husbands love

  933. your wives as

  934. Christ loved

  935. the church and

  936. gave himself

  937. up for

  938. her.

  939. Christ Jesus

  940. paid a

  941. high price

  942. for his

  943. bride, the

  944. church.

  945. He gave

  946. his life to

  947. purchase a

  948. people for

  949. himself.

  950. Christ Jesus

  951. loved the

  952. church and

  953. gave himself

  954. up for the

  955. church.

  956. The good

  957. shepherd laid

  958. down his

  959. life for the

  960. sheep which

  961. means believer

  962. if you are in

  963. Christ.

  964. You are the

  965. blood bought

  966. possession of

  967. God.

  968. Christ Jesus

  969. gave himself

  970. for you,

  971. for your

  972. salvation,

  973. for your

  974. good.

  975. And don't

  976. you think

  977. that that

  978. which he

  979. paid such a

  980. high price

  981. for that he

  982. is going to

  983. care for?

  984. Don't you

  985. think that

  986. what he paid

  987. such a high

  988. price for he's

  989. going to protect

  990. and to guard

  991. and to love

  992. and to cherish

  993. and to make

  994. sure that he

  995. accomplishes what

  996. he started in

  997. you?

  998. I'll tell you a

  999. quick story.

  1000. I've not paid

  1001. much for just

  1002. about anything.

  1003. But when I was

  1004. in high school I

  1005. wanted an electric

  1006. guitar more badly

  1007. than I could

  1008. possibly tell you.

  1009. And I spotted

  1010. it, I knew what

  1011. I wanted, I

  1012. identified it, I

  1013. had to have it

  1014. custom ordered, it

  1015. was not a

  1016. normal kind of

  1017. in stock guitar.

  1018. I worked extra

  1019. hours as much

1020. and as often as I

  1021. could to save up

  1022. as much money as

  1023. I possibly could

  1024. to purchase that

  1025. guitar.

  1026. When I walked

  1027. into the music

  1028. store and looked

  1029. at all the

  1030. guitars that were

  1031. there, do you

  1032. think I could

  1033. pick out which

  1034. one was mine?

  1035. 100%.

  1036. I knew which

  1037. one was mine.

  1038. I walked up to

  1039. it, I very

  1040. carefully grabbed

  1041. it, I put it

  1042. in the case, I

  1043. put the case over

  1044. the top, I

  1045. closed up the

  1046. case, I locked

  1047. the case with a

  1048. key, I carried

  1049. it with two

  1050. hands to my

  1051. car, I put it

  1052. in the back seat

  1053. of my car, I

  1054. put a seat belt

  1055. over the case

  1056. and very

  1057. carefully I

  1058. brought it

  1059. home.

  1060. I paid a high

  1061. price for that

  1062. guitar, but

  1063. church, Christ

  1064. Jesus bought you

  1065. with his own

  1066. blood.

  1067. Don't you

  1068. think he's

  1069. going to care

  1070. for you?

  1071. Don't you

  1072. think he's

  1073. going to bring

  1074. you safely

  1075. home?

  1076. Don't you

  1077. think that he

  1078. loves you?

  1079. The good

  1080. shepherd owns

  1081. the sheep and

  1082. the good shepherd

  1083. cares for the

  1084. sheep.

  1085. There's another

  1086. old song, oh

  1087. how he loves

  1088. you and me,

  1089. oh how he

  1090. loves you and

  1091. me.

  1092. He gave his

  1093. life, what

  1094. more could he

  1095. give?

  1096. Oh how he

  1097. loves you,

  1098. oh how he

  1099. loves me,

  1100. oh how he

  1101. loves you and

  1102. me.

  1103. It is

  1104. shockingly

  1105. easy to

  1106. forget, isn't

  1107. it?

  1108. When struggles

  1109. of this life,

  1110. when distractions

  1111. and difficulties

  1112. creep in and

  1113. weigh heavily

  1114. upon us, that

  1115. this is the

  1116. greatest news

  1117. in the

  1118. world.

  1119. God loves

  1120. you.

  1121. Christ gave

  1122. himself for

  1123. you.

  1124. You are his

  1125. blood-bought

  1126. possession.

  1127. God cares

  1128. for you.

  1129. We see how

  1130. deeply he

  1131. loves you because

  1132. he gave his

  1133. life for you on

  1134. the cross.

  1135. He owns you,

  1136. he cares for

  1137. you, not only

  1138. this, he knows

  1139. you.

  1140. The good shepherd

  1141. knows his

  1142. sheep.

  1143. Look at verse

  1144. 14.

  1145. I am the good

  1146. shepherd, I know

  1147. my own and my

  1148. own know me.

  1149. Listen to this,

  1150. just as the

  1151. father knows me

  1152. and I know

  1153. the father and

  1154. I lay down my

  1155. life for the

  1156. sheep.

  1157. This isn't

  1158. general knowledge,

  1159. is it?

  1160. This isn't

  1161. hypothetical

  1162. knowledge.

  1163. How deep and

  1164. how personal and

  1165. how perfectly does

  1166. God know the

  1167. son?

  1168. He knows him

  1169. completely,

  1170. inside out,

  1171. totally,

  1172. perfectly.

  1173. This is

  1174. specific,

  1175. person by

  1176. person,

  1177. particular

  1178. knowledge of

  1179. his sheep.

  1180. Jesus knows

  1181. his sheep.

  1182. He looks out

  1183. into the

  1184. sheep pen of

  1185. the world,

  1186. filled with

  1187. people and

  1188. says,

  1189. Jonathan,

  1190. you're mine.

  1191. Come with

  1192. me.

  1193. Sally,

  1194. you're mine.

  1195. Come with

  1196. me.

  1197. Dick,

  1198. you're mine.

  1199. Come with

  1200. me.

  1201. Randy,

  1202. you're mine.

  1203. Come with

  1204. me.

  1205. And there's

  1206. an intimate

  1207. knowledge here

  1208. between Jesus

  1209. and his

  1210. sheep.

  1211. He knows

  1212. his sheep

  1213. and his

  1214. sheep know

  1215. him.

  1216. And we're

  1217. going to get

  1218. here next

  1219. week.

  1220. I'm going to

  1221. rob from

  1222. Treg's sermon

  1223. next week,

  1224. just for a

  1225. minute.

  1226. Okay,

  1227. maybe I'm

  1228. going to

  1229. prime the

  1230. pump,

  1231. get you

  1232. ready.

  1233. I don't

  1234. know.

  1235. We'll

  1236. find out.

  1237. But it

  1238. is the

  1239. shepherd's

  1240. perfect

  1241. knowledge of

  1242. his specific

  1243. sheep in

  1244. eternity

  1245. that precedes

  1246. and secures

  1247. our hearing

  1248. his voice

  1249. and our

  1250. coming to

  1251. him and

  1252. our following

  1253. him and

  1254. our loving

  1255. him and

  1256. our trusting

  1257. him in

  1258. time.

  1259. God's

  1260. perfect

  1261. knowledge of

  1262. his sheep,

  1263. not generally,

  1264. not hypothetically,

  1265. not potentially,

  1266. God's specific

  1267. perfect knowledge of

  1268. his sheep

  1269. personally precedes

  1270. and secures the

  1271. sheep believing

  1272. and entering the

  1273. fold in time.

  1274. Look with me to

  1275. verse 26 real

  1276. quick.

  1277. We really are,

  1278. Treg, I'm

  1279. sorry, I'm

  1280. going to rob

  1281. you.

  1282. Look to

  1283. verse 26.

  1284. He tells the

  1285. Jews, listen

  1286. to this,

  1287. you do not

  1288. believe because

  1289. you are not

  1290. among my

  1291. sheep.

  1292. You hear

  1293. that?

  1294. We sometimes

  1295. tend to want to

  1296. read that the

  1297. other way around

  1298. and there are

  1299. other verses,

  1300. other passages

  1301. that speak the

  1302. other direction

  1303. and that's true.

  1304. We want to read

  1305. that you're not

  1306. among my sheep

  1307. because you

  1308. don't believe.

  1309. That's a true

  1310. statement.

  1311. Again, other

  1312. passages speak

  1313. that way in

  1314. that order.

  1315. When we get

  1316. there, we'll

  1317. preach that.

  1318. But that's not

  1319. what it says

  1320. here, is it?

  1321. Again, it says

  1322. you do not

  1323. believe because

  1324. you are not

  1325. among my

  1326. sheep.

  1327. Belonging

  1328. precedes

  1329. believing,

  1330. not the other

  1331. way around.

  1332. here's where

  1333. this is good

  1334. news for us.

  1335. Believer,

  1336. you are

  1337. known

  1338. and you

  1339. are loved

  1340. by God

  1341. completely,

  1342. personally,

  1343. just as

  1344. personally,

  1345. just as

  1346. completely as

  1347. the knowledge

  1348. of God

  1349. the Father

  1350. and God

  1351. the Son.

  1352. For all

  1353. of your

  1354. sinfulness,

  1355. for all

  1356. of your

  1357. faults,

  1358. He chose

  1359. you and

  1360. loves you

  1361. and cares

  1362. for you

  1363. and gave

  1364. Himself to

  1365. redeem you

  1366. and to

  1367. welcome you

  1368. into that

  1369. knowledge of

  1370. God.

  1371. That's what

  1372. the Good

  1373. Shepherd has

  1374. done for

  1375. His sheep.

  1376. Jesus is

  1377. telling these

  1378. Jews that

  1379. He's making

  1380. His own

  1381. sheep pen.

  1382. He's going

  1383. to the

  1384. Jewish pen

  1385. and He's

  1386. calling out

  1387. of the

  1388. Jewish pen

  1389. all of

  1390. those sheep

  1391. that belong

  1392. to Him

  1393. and all

  1394. of those

  1395. Jewish sheep

  1396. that belong

  1397. to Him

  1398. are going

  1399. to hear

  1400. His voice

  1401. and will

  1402. follow Him

  1403. out,

  1404. but He

  1405. says His

  1406. flock

  1407. will not

  1408. be entirely

  1409. Jewish.

  1410. I have

  1411. other sheep,

  1412. He says

  1413. in verse

  1414. 16,

  1415. other sheep

  1416. that are not

  1417. of this

  1418. fold.

  1419. I must

  1420. bring them

  1421. also and

  1422. they will

  1423. listen to

  1424. my voice.

  1425. So there

  1426. will be

  1427. one flock,

  1428. one

  1429. shepherd.

  1430. The Good

  1431. Shepherd owns

  1432. His sheep.

  1433. The Good

  1434. Shepherd purchased

  1435. the sheep.

  1436. He cares

  1437. for the sheep.

  1438. He knows

  1439. His sheep

  1440. and He

  1441. pursues

  1442. the sheep

  1443. and they

  1444. will listen

  1445. to His

  1446. voice.

  1447. What is He

  1448. talking about

  1449. here?

  1450. What is He

  1451. talking about?

  1452. He's

  1453. talking about

  1454. the spread

  1455. of the

  1456. gospel

  1457. through the

  1458. nations.

  1459. From

  1460. Jerusalem

  1461. to Judea

  1462. to Samaria

  1463. to the

  1464. uttermost

  1465. ends of

  1466. the world.

  1467. The plan

  1468. of God

  1469. from the

  1470. beginning

  1471. of time

  1472. was not

  1473. simply to

  1474. build a

  1475. physically

  1476. Jewish

  1477. people,

  1478. but from

  1479. the seed

  1480. of this

  1481. one Jewish

  1482. people to

  1483. grow one

  1484. multi-ethnic

  1485. global flock

  1486. of God

  1487. joined together

  1488. under one

  1489. good shepherd,

  1490. Jesus Christ.

  1491. It's the

  1492. church.

  1493. Jesus

  1494. calls His

  1495. sheep from

  1496. the flock

  1497. of Israel.

  1498. They hear

  1499. His voice

  1500. and then He

  1501. looks out

  1502. to the

  1503. mountains

  1504. here,

  1505. to the

  1506. valleys

  1507. here,

  1508. to the

  1509. country

  1510. here,

  1511. to the

  1512. fields

  1513. here,

  1514. and He

  1515. says,

  1516. I have

  1517. other

  1518. sheep.

  1519. I must

  1520. bring them

  1521. in.

  1522. Do you

  1523. hear that

  1524. confidence?

  1525. Do you

  1526. hear that

  1527. determination?

  1528. I must

  1529. bring them

  1530. in,

  1531. and they

  1532. will

  1533. listen to

  1534. my voice.

  1535. This is

  1536. rock-solid

  1537. determination

  1538. to accomplish

  1539. the plan

  1540. of God,

  1541. the missionary

  1542. plan of God,

  1543. and He

  1544. says,

  1545. for this

  1546. reason,

  1547. for this

  1548. reason,

  1549. the Father

  1550. loves me.

  1551. Not,

  1552. of course,

  1553. that God

  1554. wouldn't love

  1555. Jesus apart

  1556. from this,

  1557. but that the

  1558. love of the

  1559. Father overflows

  1560. for the Son

  1561. because of

  1562. the deep

  1563. dependence of

  1564. Christ to

  1565. fulfill the

  1566. eternal plan

  1567. of God for

  1568. the redemption

  1569. of His

  1570. people to

  1571. the praise

  1572. of His

  1573. glorious grace.

  1574. So God

  1575. says,

  1576. this is my

  1577. beloved Son

  1578. with whom I'm

  1579. well pleased.

  1580. This plan,

  1581. He says,

  1582. will be

  1583. accomplished,

  1584. which means

  1585. Jews,

  1586. all you who

  1587. are about to

  1588. pick up rocks

  1589. to stone

  1590. me,

  1591. all you who

  1592. are trying

  1593. to kill

  1594. me,

  1595. you cannot

  1596. kill me.

  1597. I lay

  1598. down my

  1599. life that I

  1600. may take it

  1601. up again.

  1602. My death

  1603. and my

  1604. resurrection

  1605. are mine

  1606. to accomplish.

  1607. The Father

  1608. has given me

  1609. this charge.

  1610. No one

  1611. takes it

  1612. from me.

  1613. I lay it

  1614. down of my

  1615. own accord.

  1616. I have the

  1617. authority to

  1618. lay it down.

  1619. I have

  1620. authority to

  1621. take it up

  1622. again.

  1623. Why?

  1624. It's the plan.

  1625. I've come

  1626. to accomplish

  1627. the plan

  1628. for the

  1629. purchase of

  1630. all of

  1631. my sheep.

  1632. And the

  1633. reason why

  1634. we're gathered

  1635. here this

  1636. morning,

  1637. church,

  1638. not a

  1639. physically

  1640. Jewish

  1641. person in

  1642. the room,

  1643. it's because

  1644. Christ accomplished

  1645. the plan.

  1646. Christ lay

  1647. down His

  1648. life for

  1649. the sheep.

  1650. Christ rose

  1651. from the

  1652. grave for

  1653. the sheep,

  1654. and Christ's

  1655. voice has

  1656. gone out to

  1657. each one

  1658. of you,

  1659. and called

  1660. you in

  1661. to His

  1662. one flock,

  1663. the church.

  1664. Jesus is

  1665. talking about

  1666. the Gentiles

  1667. here, but I

  1668. have a question

  1669. for you.

  1670. How does

  1671. Christ plan

  1672. to bring

  1673. in His

  1674. sheep from

  1675. every corner

  1676. of the earth?

  1677. What's the

  1678. plan?

  1679. How does

  1680. Christ plan

  1681. to call

  1682. into His

  1683. flock all

  1684. of His

  1685. sheep?

  1686. Christ

  1687. builds

  1688. His

  1689. church

  1690. through

  1691. His

  1692. church.

  1693. Christ

  1694. builds

  1695. His

  1696. people

  1697. through

  1698. His

  1699. people.

  1700. It's

  1701. through

  1702. us.

  1703. You want

  1704. to know

  1705. our brilliant

  1706. plan for

  1707. reaching all

  1708. in all

  1709. with the

  1710. gospel?

  1711. Our

  1712. brilliant

  1713. plan for

  1714. reaching Mount

  1715. Pleasant

  1716. and Hugee

  1717. and McClellanville?

  1718. Preach the

  1719. gospel of

  1720. Jesus Christ.

  1721. Share the

  1722. gospel of

  1723. Jesus Christ.

  1724. Proclaim it

  1725. here behind

  1726. a pulpit and

  1727. there in the

  1728. streets and in

  1729. our neighborhoods.

  1730. Tell our

  1731. friends about

  1732. Jesus with

  1733. confidence and

  1734. joy that His

  1735. sheep will hear

  1736. His voice and

  1737. enter the fold

  1738. and the plan

  1739. will be

  1740. accomplished and

  1741. God will be

  1742. glorified as

  1743. His church is

  1744. built.

  1745. Our passage

  1746. this morning

  1747. ends yet

  1748. again with

  1749. a division,

  1750. doesn't it?

  1751. Some say

  1752. He has a

  1753. demon.

  1754. It is insane.

  1755. Why listen to

  1756. Him?

  1757. Others say

  1758. these are not

  1759. the words of

  1760. one who is

  1761. oppressed by

  1762. a demon.

  1763. Can a demon

  1764. open up the

  1765. eyes of a

  1766. blind?

  1767. They're torn

  1768. in their

  1769. opinion.

  1770. Again,

  1771. the question

  1772. who is

  1773. Jesus?

  1774. That same

  1775. question

  1776. again is

  1777. put to

  1778. us this

  1779. morning.

  1780. Who is

  1781. Jesus?

  1782. Is He the

  1783. door through

  1784. whom you

  1785. have entered

  1786. into salvation?

  1787. Into the

  1788. peace and the

  1789. blessing and

  1790. the presence

  1791. and the

  1792. knowledge of

  1793. God?

  1794. Is He your

  1795. shepherd who

  1796. loves you and

  1797. leads you and

  1798. guides you and

  1799. cares for you and

  1800. lay down His

  1801. life for you,

  1802. who purchased

  1803. you with His

  1804. own blood?

  1805. Are you

  1806. resting and

  1807. rejoicing in

  1808. the joy of

  1809. being Christ's

  1810. sheep?

  1811. Savior, like a

  1812. shepherd, lead

  1813. us much we

  1814. need, thy

  1815. tender care.

  1816. In thy

  1817. pleasant pastures

  1818. feed us for

  1819. our use, thy

  1820. folds prepare.

  1821. Blessed Jesus,

  1822. blessed Jesus,

  1823. thou has bought

  1824. us, thine we

  1825. are.

  1826. Let's pray.

  1827. Lord Jesus, we

  1828. praise You.

  1829. We thank You.

  1830. We rejoice that

  1831. You are our

  1832. shepherd.

  1833. That You have

  1834. led us through

  1835. the door

  1836. into the

  1837. pasture

  1838. of knowing

  1839. God.

  1840. We thank You for

  1841. the forgiveness

  1842. and the peace

  1843. and the joy

  1844. as found

  1845. only in You

  1846. and that You

  1847. offer up freely

  1848. to any who

  1849. believe.

  1850. We love You

  1851. and we praise

  1852. You for this

  1853. in Christ's name.

  1854. Amen.

  1855. Amen.
