  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  2. We've made it to the end of John chapter 12, not to the end of our sermon series,

    John 12 chapter mention

  3. but the end of the first half of John's Gospel.

  4. So when you found it there in your Bibles, our text this morning is John 12, 36 through 50.

  5. If you would stand and follow along as I read the Word of God.

  6. You know, every week I ask you to have your Bibles open.

  7. And this week especially, I mean, we're going to be jumping around several places.

  8. So please, John 12, 36 through 50, let's stand in reverence of the Word of God.

  9. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.

  10. When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.

  11. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him.

  12. So that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled.

  13. Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?

  14. And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

  15. Therefore, they could not believe.

  16. For again, Isaiah said, he has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart.

  17. Lest they see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.

  18. Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.

  19. Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him.

  20. But for fear of the Pharisees, they did not confess it so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.

  21. For they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

  22. And Jesus cried out and said,

  23. Whoever believes in me believes not in me, but in him who sent me.

  24. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.

  25. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

  26. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him.

  27. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

  28. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge.

  29. The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

  30. For I have not spoken on my own authority,

  31. But the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment.

  32. What to say and what to speak.

  33. And I know that his commandment is eternal life.

  34. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.

  35. This is God's word.

  36. A lamp for our feet and a light for our path.

  37. If you would be seated, let's pray once more.

  38. Father,

  39. Father,

  40. We ask now as I stand here to preach your word.

  41. Would you work through me, a weak servant,

  42. To do infinite good for this people.

  43. I pray in Jesus' name.

  44. Amen.

  45. I wonder if that was a new song for you.

  46. God moves in a mysterious way.

  47. I listen for the ways that y'all sing.

  48. And you actually do pretty good singing new songs.

  49. And so sometimes it's hard for me to tell.

  50. I could tell this morning.

  51. That was a new one for you.

  52. I love the lyrics that we just sang.

  53. God moves in a mysterious way.

  54. His wonders to perform.

  55. He plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm.

  56. Blind unbelief is sure to err.

  57. And scan his work in vain.

  58. God is his own interpreter.

  59. And he will make it plain.

  60. Church, our passage this morning is difficult.

  61. This is, there's no way around it.

  62. This is a hard text.

  63. I'll confess to you this week as I studied and prepared this text.

  64. We've preached maybe 30 something sermons in John so far.

  65. This was the hardest text that I had to study.

  66. Up to this point in the gospel of John.

  67. We may not love everything that this passage says.

  68. We may not understand everything that this passage has to say.

  69. But we trust in God's way and God's time that God is his own interpreter.

  70. And he will make it plain.

  71. We've come to the end of the first half of John's gospel.

  72. And here as John ends the first half, chapters 1 through 12, brings that first half to a close,

  73. he zooms out of the narrative and he starts to provide a bit of commentary for us.

  74. John's aim throughout the book, you remember, he's writing these things that we might believe

  75. that Jesus is the Christ.

  76. And by believing that we might have life in his name.

  77. That's the point of the book.

  78. All are invited to believe.

  79. And yet John has shown us not all believe.

  80. He told us all the way back in chapter 1, verses 11 and 12.

  81. He, Jesus, came to his own people, the Jews, and his own people did not receive him.

  82. This is shocking.

  83. This unbelief, this rejection.

  84. It demands an explanation.

  85. But, verse 12, the glorious invitation of the gospel to all who did receive him, who believed in his name,

  86. he gave the right to become children of God.

  87. All are invited to believe, yet not all believe.

  88. So this morning, as we look at this passage together, I want to ask two questions about belief in Jesus.

  89. This will be our outline this morning.

  90. Two questions about belief in Jesus.

  91. Question number one, why don't they believe?

  92. Question number two, will you?

  93. Question number one, why don't they believe?

  94. Question number two, will you?

  95. First, why don't they believe?

  96. How do we explain unbelief?

  97. Verses 36 through 43 are a condemnation of the unbelief of the Jewish people.

  98. We saw last week, Jesus, he called them, he invited them,

  99. while you have the light, believe in the light, that you, even you, may become sons of light.

  100. Yet we know that by and large, the Jewish people rejected Jesus.

  101. And so John says that when Jesus had said these things, he departed.

  102. He hid himself from them.

  103. This withdrawal from them is in itself judgment on their unbelief.

  104. One of the major obstacles for the Jews in John's day, as well as in our day, to belief in Jesus,

  105. is the question, well, why should we believe that Jesus is the Messiah

  106. if all of the Jews, most of the Jews who saw him, who heard him, who were closest and nearest to Jesus, rejected him?

  107. If they rejected him, why should we believe him?

  108. Why did they not believe?

  109. It's a good question.

  110. And John answers that question in two ways.

  111. And we're going to see them both here.

  112. The one reason they don't believe is because in their sin, they have chosen willfully to reject the Messiah.

  113. There is no excuse for this.

  114. They are guilty for this decision.

  115. The light of the world walked among them, but instead they rejected the light of the world and chose to live in darkness.

  116. They have loved the darkness rather than the light because their works are evil.

  117. That's what John told us, Jesus told us in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  118. That's reason number one.

  119. They are willfully in their sin choosing to reject the light.

  120. But he gives us a second reason here.

  121. Reason number two, why they don't believe.

  122. He says they don't believe because God has hardened their hearts.

  123. So they could not believe, verse 39 tells us.

  124. Now the first reason John gives, that's easier for us to understand, isn't it?

  125. We grasp that a little bit better.

  126. We have an easier time understanding reason number one.

  127. But in explaining the unthinkable rejection of Jesus by his own people,

  128. John gives us both explanations here.

  129. They have willfully rejected the Messiah in their own sin.

  130. And in God's infinite wisdom, this willful rejection was all part of his good, sovereign plan.

  131. Now again, we've seen this throughout the Gospel of John.

  132. This isn't new information for us.

  133. But again, in this passage, we're coming right up against the tension, the biblical tension,

  134. between God's sovereignty and man's responsibility.

  135. And you remember, we believe both.

  136. The Bible teaches both.

  137. Our responsibility as Christians is to submit ourselves to the truth of this Word,

  138. not to reduce it to our level of understanding.

  139. Some things in this Bible, some things in the Word of God,

  140. what he reveals to us, remain a mystery.

  141. Which means they're bigger and broader and more mysterious than our limited understanding can grasp.

  142. Nevertheless, he teaches both.

  143. And so we believe both.

  144. Let's look at both of these reasons here.

  145. Reason number one why the Jews didn't believe is because they willfully rejected the light.

  146. And whatever the reason for their unbelief, the answer cannot be that they didn't have enough evidence.

  147. John tells us in verse 37, he says,

  148. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him.

  149. Just recap what we've seen in the first 12 chapters of John's Gospel.

  150. This should stun us.

  151. Seven signs of his divinity.

  152. Seven signs played out right there in the public eye before them.

  153. Do you remember what they were?

  154. He turned water into wine.

  155. Cleansed the temple.

  156. Healed the nobleman's son.

  157. Healed the lame man.

  158. Fed the 5,000.

  159. Gave sight to the blind man.

  160. Raised Lazarus up from the dead.

  161. And all while declaring, speaking, saying openly, clearly,

  162. I am the bread of life.

  163. I am the light of the world.

  164. I am the gate for the sheep.

  165. I am the good shepherd.

  166. I am the resurrection and the life.

  167. The evidence is overwhelming.

  168. Yet, they choose willingly to reject him.

  169. This rejection, of course, is no surprise to God.

  170. And it shouldn't be a surprise to us either.

  171. If we're familiar with our Old Testament,

  172. the rejection of the Jewish people to the Word and the power of God is nothing new.

  173. John says in verse 38,

  174. this rejection was, in fact, a fulfillment of prophecy.

  175. So he helps us to understand this unbelief by quoting from two passages in Isaiah.

  176. This is why I need your Bibles open, because we're going to be flipping there.

  177. Keep your place in John chapter 12, but flip over to Isaiah chapter 53.

John 12 chapter mention Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  178. And this is the first quotation he gives us.

  179. You know this passage well.

  180. It's the passage of the suffering servant.

  181. Isaiah chapter 53, verse 1.

    Isaiah 53:1

  182. That's the first verse quoted there in John.

  183. Again, I'm rambling, so you can get there.

  184. I want your eyes on the page.

  185. He says,

  186. Isaiah was lamenting the fact that his message,

  187. the message given him by God to be declared to the Jewish people,

  188. was in Isaiah's day, by and large, rejected.

  189. John quotes that passage, copies and pastes it into Jesus' day,

  190. and says,

  191. Nothing has changed.

  192. The words of Christ are clear.

  193. Whom has believed what he has heard?

  194. And the signs, the arm of the Lord has been clear.

  195. To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

  196. And yet, you have rejected it.

  197. 700 years of history of the Jewish people,

  198. and nothing has changed.

  199. John says,

  200. The Jewish people have been rejecting God's word and God's power for centuries.

  201. This rejection of Jesus in John's day was preceded and prefigured

  202. by another rejection in Isaiah's day.

  203. This is nothing new.

  204. Not only this, he goes a little further.

  205. John says,

  206. This specific rejection of the Messiah,

  207. it's not only preceded,

  208. it's prophesied by Isaiah 53.

  209. This specific rejection of this specific individual,

  210. Jesus Christ,

  211. was prophesied 700 years before it happened.

  212. Look there, Isaiah 53, verse 2.

    Isaiah 53:2

  213. He says,

  214. For he grew up before him like a young plant,

  215. and like a root out of dry ground.

  216. He had no form or majesty that we should look at him,

  217. and no beauty that we should desire him.

  218. He was despised and rejected by men,

  219. a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

  220. And as one from whom men hide their faces,

  221. he was despised,

  222. and we esteemed him not.

  223. Now, we don't know exactly what Jesus looked like physically.

  224. We don't know.

  225. But Isaiah draws our attention to something significant here

  226. that we should understand,

  227. is that Jesus was not attractive.

  228. You know, all of the images,

  229. you know what I'm talking about.

  230. The television shows,

  231. any movie representation of Jesus,

  232. they all normally,

  233. there is an attractive man,

  234. nice, clean, fair skin,

  235. nice, straight, white teeth,

  236. a beautiful smile,

  237. long, luscious locks of hair,

  238. perfectly kept beard,

  239. muscles for days,

  240. blue eyes,

  241. soft, beautiful eyes.

  242. We don't know exactly what Jesus looked like,

  243. but Isaiah tells us,

  244. clues us in,

  245. that to the physical eye only,

  246. he was nothing special.

  247. He was not anything special to look at.

  248. No form or majesty that we should look at him,

  249. no beauty that we should desire him.

  250. There was nothing impressive about Jesus

  251. to the natural, physical eye.

  252. Why does this matter?

  253. Because when Jesus arrives on the scene 700 years later,

  254. what happens?

  255. The Jews look at him with natural,

  256. physical eyes,

  257. and they are utterly unimpressed.

  258. What are they looking for?

  259. They're looking for a Messiah with a capital M.

  260. Someone tall and strong and capable,

  261. a political leader,

  262. a military leader,

  263. someone with charisma,

  264. who can gather the people and overthrow the Romans.

  265. They're looking with physical eyes only,

  266. and they're unimpressed by what they see.

  267. Well, Jesus comes in on a donkey,

  268. humble,

  269. and lowly.

  270. They see him with physical eyes only,

  271. and so they reject him.

  272. But John explains to us in verse 42

  273. that the issue,

  274. it even goes deeper than that.

  275. It goes deeper than simple physical sight.

  276. Their rejection of the Messiah ultimately

  277. is because they love the glory of man

  278. more than the glory of God.

  279. Look there to verse 42.

  280. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  281. Flip back there for me.

  282. John says,

  283. some of the authorities believed in him,

  284. but we should be skeptical

  285. of the genuineness of this belief

  286. because he goes on to say

  287. that they wouldn't confess it

  288. because they feared the Pharisees.

  289. Why?

  290. Verse 43.

  291. Because they love the glory that comes from man

  292. more than the glory that comes from God.

  293. This is a scathing indictment,

  294. and it's true of every non-believer on the planet.

  295. This is the root of all unbelief.

  296. It's love.

  297. The unbelief is not primarily an intellectual issue.

  298. Not mainly.

  299. It's a heart issue.

  300. You can put all the evidence you want

  301. in front of an unbeliever.

  302. Seven signs.

  303. Resurrection from the dead.

  304. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  305. Yet if their eyes are spiritually blind

  306. and their heart is spiritually dead,

  307. they will not love the glory of God.

  308. They will prefer the darkness

  309. and love the glory of man.

  310. They do as Romans 1 describes.

  311. They exchange the truth about God

  312. for a lie and worship and serve

  313. created things rather than the Creator.

  314. From the heart,

  315. they worship and serve whatever it is

  316. that they perceive to be beautiful.

  317. All of us do.

  318. All of us do.

  319. You know, we often wonder

  320. about our unbelieving friends and family.

  321. We just wish.

  322. We don't understand.

  323. We think they've heard the Word.

  324. They've seen the power of God at work.

  325. Why won't they believe?

  326. I think this tells us that

  327. what they need is not necessarily

  328. more evidence.

  329. The only hope for a non-believer

  330. is that God by His grace

  331. would give them a new heart

  332. that loves His glory more than their sin.

  333. Answer number one.

  334. Why don't they believe?

  335. John says in the blindness of their sin

  336. they don't see the beauty of Christ

  337. and they love the darkness

  338. rather than the light.

  339. So they don't believe.

  340. But John doesn't leave it there, does he?

  341. He goes on.

  342. He gives us a second reason

  343. for their unbelief.

  344. He says,

  345. God has blinded their eyes

  346. and hardened their hearts.

  347. John 12 verse 39.

    John 12:39

  348. He says,

  349. Therefore they could not believe.

  350. Could not believe.

  351. For again, Isaiah said,

  352. He has blinded their eyes

  353. and hardened their heart

  354. lest they see with their eyes

  355. and understand with their heart

  356. and turn

  357. and I would heal them.

  358. The unbelief of these Jews,

  359. it was not just prophesied by Isaiah.

  360. John says it was purposed

  361. in the wise plan of God.

  362. Here in verse 40,

  363. John gives us a second quotation from Isaiah.

  364. This time from Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  365. If you flip back there with me

  366. to Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  367. you ought to know this passage as well.

  368. This is Isaiah's vision of the glory of God.

  369. Do you remember what happened?

  370. He sees the glory of the Lord

  371. and what does he do?

  372. He falls down on his knees

  373. and he says,

  374. Woe is me.

  375. I am unclean.

  376. I am sinful.

  377. We are a people of unclean lips.

  378. We need atonement.

  379. We need forgiveness.

  380. And this vision of the glory of the Lord,

  381. it changes his life.

  382. He volunteers.

  383. He says,

  384. Here am I, Lord.

  385. Send me out.

  386. I want to go tell everyone.

  387. Let me be your messenger.

  388. Send me out to your people.

  389. I want to tell them about your glory.

  390. And so he's sent.

  391. But the Lord tells him in Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  392. he says,

  393. Go and say to this people,

  394. what does he say?

  395. Keep on hearing,

  396. but do not understand.

  397. Keep on seeing,

  398. but do not perceive.

  399. Make the heart of this people dull

  400. and their eyes heavy

  401. and blind their eyes,

  402. lest they see with their eyes

  403. and hear with their ears

  404. and understand with their hearts

  405. and turn and be healed.

  406. Isaiah is sent to proclaim a message

  407. of sin and judgment for sin

  408. and glory.

  409. And God says,

  410. Be prepared because this message,

  411. as you preach it,

  412. will not be received.

  413. In fact,

  414. the message itself

  415. will harden and blind those who hear it.

  416. What was the message?

  417. Flip back to John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  418. and make the connection with me.

  419. What was the message that Isaiah preached?

  420. Look at John 12 verse 41.

    John 12:41

  421. What does it say?

  422. Isaiah said these things

  423. because he saw his glory

  424. and spoke of him.

  425. Whose glory?

  426. Whose glory is John pointing us to

  427. here in this passage?

  428. John, I believe,

  429. is telling us that

  430. Isaiah saw the glory

  431. of the Son of God.

  432. It was Jesus' glory

  433. that Isaiah beheld.

  434. Isaiah beheld the glory

  435. of the Son of God.

  436. He preached of the glory

  437. of the Son of God.

  438. He preached a message

  439. of the glory of the Messiah.

  440. That's who he saw.

  441. That's who he proclaimed.

  442. He proclaimed a glory

  443. of a man of sorrows

  444. acquainted with grief.

  445. Not the Messiah they wanted.

  446. Not the Messiah they thought was coming.

  447. Not the strong-armed military leader

  448. conquering king.

  449. A message of a Messiah

  450. who will come and suffer

  451. for the sins of his people

  452. because their sin has earned judgment.

  453. God knowingly,

  454. purposefully sent

  455. an unimpressive,

  456. undesirable,

  457. even an offensive Messiah.

  458. The one who didn't play

  459. by the Jewish customs,

  460. didn't come from the Jewish schools,

  461. didn't look like what they thought

  462. the Messiah would look like.

  463. He did so purposefully,

  464. sovereignly,

  465. knowing that apart

  466. from a gracious change of heart,

  467. this Christ would be rejected.

  468. Therefore, John says,

  469. they could not believe.

  470. But this rejection

  471. was purposeful

  472. in the mind of God.

  473. But we need to ask,

  474. why would God do this?

  475. Why would God

  476. work out His plan of redemption

  477. in this way?

  478. And here again,

  479. to be perfectly honest with you,

  480. I don't completely know the answer.

  481. This is a mystery.

  482. Paul calls the gospel a mystery.

  483. Who can know the mind of God?

  484. God moves in mysterious ways.

  485. But I do have a few thoughts.

  486. As I was studying this passage,

  487. I flipped through a few commentaries,

  488. especially in difficult passages like this.

  489. I love to read people

  490. who are smarter than me,

  491. which gives me a lot of material

  492. to sift through.

  493. And I found one this week

  494. from D.A. Carson,

  495. who I love.

  496. I love D.A. Carson.

  497. He listed out four considerations.

  498. Four considerations.

  499. If it's okay with you,

  500. I'm going to summarize his points

  501. because he writes

  502. like he's smarter than me.

  503. So four considerations.

  504. Consideration number one.

  505. God's sovereignty

  506. is never contrary

  507. to human responsibility.

  508. God's sovereignty

  509. is never contrary

  510. to human responsibility.

  511. I hope we've seen this.

  512. And yes, again,

  513. this is beyond our comprehension.

  514. Our minds can't reconcile

  515. this completely,

  516. but the Bible holds both together

  517. and so should we.

  518. No one is sent to hell

  519. in innocence

  520. or against their will.

  521. We, in our natural state,

  522. apart from the grace of God,

  523. our default mode

  524. is to love the darkness

  525. and hate the glory of God.

  526. All of us are guilty.

  527. Consideration number two.

  528. God's hardening of sinners

  529. is giving them

  530. exactly what they want.

  531. God's hardening of sinners

  532. is giving them

  533. exactly what they want.

  534. A willful rejection of God,

  535. it brings about His judgment

  536. and is, at the same time,

  537. it is His judgment.

  538. Unbelief not only earns

  539. the judgment of God,

  540. but persistent unbelief

  541. is the judgment of God.

  542. Often, the way that God judges

  543. a sinner's love of darkness

  544. is by saying,

  545. you can have exactly what you want.

  546. Jesus, the light of the world,

  547. hides Himself.

  548. Consideration number three.

  549. God's sovereignty and salvation

  550. is the only hope we have.

  551. God's sovereignty over salvation

  552. is the only hope we have.

  553. If God is not in complete control,

  554. why do we pray

  555. and ask Him to save the lost?

  556. God's sovereignty and salvation

  557. combined with His heart of mercy,

  558. combined with His inclination

  559. towards grace,

  560. combined with His desire

  561. to save sinners

  562. seen supremely at the cross of Christ,

  563. His reason for hope

  564. and confidence

  565. and prayer

  566. and faithfulness in evangelism.

  567. It's the only hope that we have

  568. that any sinner might be saved.

  569. Consideration number four.

  570. God has a plan for good.

  571. The mystery of the gospel,

  572. the plan from before the ages began,

  573. was for the Son of God

  574. to enter into His own creation,

  575. to live perfectly

  576. in the place of sinners,

  577. to die in the place of sinners

  578. and to rise from the grave,

  579. to offer eternal life to the world.

  580. His rejection at the hands of the Jews

  581. is in ways beyond our comprehension,

  582. all part of the plan.

  583. In God's wisdom,

  584. as Paul argues in Romans,

  585. through their trespass,

  586. salvation has come to the Gentiles.

  587. Through their trespass,

  588. salvation has come to you

  589. and to me.

  590. The Great Commission,

  591. that to go therefore

  592. and make disciples of all nations,

  593. is made possible in the wisdom of God

  594. by the rejection of the Jewish Messiah.

  595. As Paul says again in Romans 11,

  596. a partial hardening has come upon Israel

  597. until the fullness of the Gentiles

  598. has come in

  599. and in this way,

  600. all Israel will be saved.

  601. There are a hundred sermons to preach

  602. from that verse,

  603. but just know this.

  604. God is not sitting on His hands

  605. hoping that His plan of salvation

  606. just works out on its own.

  607. God is working it out

  608. and it will not fail.

  609. And the wisdom of God,

  610. the rejection of Israel,

  611. opens up the invitation

  612. for all the world

  613. to hear and believe

  614. the message of the gospel

  615. and receive eternal life.

  616. Which brings us

  617. to question number two.

  618. Will you believe it?

  619. Will you believe it?

  620. Verse 44,

  621. as you're reading this passage,

  622. it just sort of comes out of nowhere,

  623. doesn't it?

  624. It seems sudden.

  625. It seems abrupt.

  626. We don't know where Jesus went.

  627. We don't know where He's hidden Himself.

  628. We don't know who He's speaking to here.

  629. But I think that that is part of the point.

  630. John's wrapping up this section

  631. of this gospel

  632. and Jesus is calling out

  633. to anyone who would hear.

  634. He's speaking to you this morning.

  635. He says,

  636. whoever believes in Me,

  637. believes not in Me,

  638. but in Him who sent Me.

  639. Whoever sees Me,

  640. sees Him who sent Me.

  641. I have come into this world as light

  642. so that whoever believes in Me

  643. may not remain in darkness.

  644. This is a free and broad

  645. and gracious and wide invitation

  646. to anyone who would hear

  647. that you are welcome

  648. to come to Christ.

  649. You are invited

  650. to have your sins forgiven,

  651. to be washed clean,

  652. to be made right with God,

  653. to be made new

  654. and to receive eternal life.

  655. See, from God's perspective,

  656. He alone knows who will be saved

  657. because He alone

  658. is the one who works salvation.

  659. It's His work.

  660. We don't have that perspective.

  661. From our perspective,

  662. we don't share God's sovereign knowledge

  663. of all things.

  664. We don't know who will be saved

  665. and who will reject the Gospel.

  666. So what do we do?

  667. We do as Christ does

  668. in these verses.

  669. We call sinners to faith in Christ.

  670. We go to the ends of the earth

  671. and we scatter the seed of the Gospel

  672. broadly, freely,

  673. with confidence

  674. that rejection does not stop

  675. the plan of God.

  676. Some seed will fall on rocky soil.

  677. Some seed will grow up among the thorns.

  678. But we praise God

  679. that some seed will bear fruit.

  680. So we go.

  681. Now our privilege

  682. in light of the sovereignty of God

  683. is to proclaim the message of Jesus

  684. as freely

  685. and as broadly

  686. and as openly

  687. as we possibly can,

  688. trusting that even through weak vessels

  689. like us,

  690. God will work salvation.

  691. Him we proclaim.

  692. Warning everyone

  693. and teaching everyone

  694. with all wisdom

  695. that we might present

  696. everyone mature in Christ.

  697. For all who call upon the name of the Lord

  698. will be saved.

  699. This is our message, church.

  700. Will you believe it?

  701. And will you call upon His name

  702. and be saved?

  703. The late Scottish pastor, John Murray,

  704. He says it much better than I can.

  705. Listen to this.

  706. Imagine it with a Scottish accent.

  707. He says,

  708. It is by the sovereign grace

  709. that He is so freely offered.

  710. Sovereign grace

  711. is not then incompatible

  712. with the free offer of the gospel.

  713. It is rather sovereign grace

  714. that makes the gospel free.

  715. The fount of grace freely offered

  716. is grace sovereignly devised and framed.

  717. And not only is sovereign grace

  718. the fount,

  719. but sovereign grace

  720. is also the stream on the bosom

  721. of which Christ is born

  722. to the very door

  723. of our responsibility

  724. and opportunity.

  725. To change the figure,

  726. but a little,

  727. it is upon the crest

  728. of the wave

  729. of the sovereignty of God

  730. that the free

  731. and full overtures

  732. of Christ in the gospel

  733. break upon the shores

  734. of lost humanity.

  735. Isn't that beautiful?

  736. We want everyone

  737. to listen and consider

  738. and believe what Jesus says

  739. about Himself here

  740. in verses 44 through 50.

  741. Look there with me.

  742. What does He say?

  743. He says,

  744. To believe in Jesus

  745. is to believe in God.

  746. You cannot have one

  747. without the other.

  748. Whoever believes in Me

  749. believes not in Me,

  750. but in Him who sent Me.

  751. Jesus Christ was sent by God

  752. to be the revelation

  753. of God in the world.

  754. The living Word of God

  755. made flesh.

  756. Jesus says,

  757. I and the Father are one.

  758. I am the way,

  759. the truth,

  760. the life.

  761. No one comes to the Father

  762. except through Me.

  763. Will you believe this?

  764. He says,

  765. To see Jesus

  766. is to see God.

  767. Whoever sees Me

  768. sees Him who sent Me.

  769. We'll see you in a few weeks,

  770. Lord willing.

  771. As we get to John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  772. Philip asks Him,

  773. Lord,

  774. just show us the Father

  775. and it's enough for us.

  776. You remember this conversation?

  777. And how did Jesus respond?

  778. Have I been with you so long

  779. and yet you still don't know Me,

  780. Philip?

  781. Whoever has seen Me

  782. has seen the Father.

  783. Will you believe this?

  784. Will you look to Jesus

  785. not just as a man,

  786. not just as a prophet,

  787. not just as a moral example,

  788. but look to Him

  789. as the very Son of God

  790. Himself in the flesh?

  791. Would you plead

  792. with your non-believing friends?

  793. Will you see Jesus

  794. for who He is?

  795. He says,

  796. To believe in Jesus

  797. is to be in the light

  798. and to reject Him

  799. is to remain in darkness.

  800. The call of the Gospel is this.

  801. Would you come out

  802. of your sinful darkness?

  803. Would you turn from your sin?

  804. Would you not remain in darkness?

  805. Would you leave it behind?

  806. Would you love the glory of God

  807. more than the glory of man?

  808. Would you love the light

  809. more than the darkness?

  810. He can do it.

  811. He can change your heart

  812. so you love what's eternally good

  813. and turn from what's eternally foolish.

  814. Would you come to the light?

  815. We call them to believe

  816. and to come to Christ.

  817. And we call them with urgency

  818. because he says

  819. to reject Jesus

  820. is to reject God.

  821. If anyone hears my words

  822. and does not keep them,

  823. I do not judge them

  824. for I did not come

  825. to judge the world

  826. but to save the world.

  827. The one who rejects me

  828. and does not receive my words

  829. has a judge.

  830. The word that I have spoken

  831. will judge him

  832. on the last day.

  833. For I have not spoken

  834. on my own authority

  835. but the Father who sent me

  836. has Himself given me

  837. a commandment

  838. what to say

  839. and what to speak.

  840. You cannot love God

  841. and reject Jesus.

  842. Despite what our

  843. Jehovah's Witness friends say

  844. when they come knocking

  845. on the door,

  846. you cannot say you know God

  847. and yet deny that Jesus

  848. is who He says He is.

  849. If you reject Jesus,

  850. you reject God.

  851. And Jesus says

  852. if you leave here

  853. rejecting my words,

  854. I'm not here to judge you

  855. just yet

  856. but when I return,

  857. these very words

  858. that you have rejected

  859. will be the grounds

  860. of your judgment

  861. on the last day.

  862. To reject Jesus

  863. is to reject God

  864. but

  865. He says

  866. to receive Jesus

  867. is to receive

  868. eternal life.

  869. Look there to verse 50.

  870. He says,

  871. I know,

  872. He says in verse 50

  873. that His commandment

  874. is eternal life.

  875. Will you believe this?

  876. The invitation of the gospel

  877. is free and available

  878. for any sinner

  879. who hears and heeds

  880. the call of Christ

  881. to come to me

  882. all who are weary

  883. and heavy laden

  884. and I will give you rest.

  885. Will you believe this?

  886. Church,

  887. Church,

  888. I love

  889. this difficult passage

  890. because it helps us

  891. to see that God's

  892. sovereignty

  893. and salvation

  894. and the free offer

  895. of the gospel

  896. go hand in hand.

  897. They are friends.

  898. And we may not fully grasp

  899. the mystery

  900. of how these truths

  901. work together

  902. but please don't make

  903. the mistake

  904. of reducing God's mystery

  905. to our level

  906. of understanding.

  907. God is sovereign.

  908. We are responsible.

  909. And the offer

  910. of the gospel

  911. is freely made

  912. to any sinner

  913. who would hear.

  914. You may have heard

  915. of William Carey.

  916. He's known as

  917. the father of modern missions.

  918. Do you know that name?

  919. He came to a gathering

  920. of other Baptist pastors

  921. and he said,

  922. brothers,

  923. if we founded

  924. a missionary society

  925. and we worked together,

  926. if we pulled our funds together

  927. and put our minds together,

  928. we could reach

  929. the ends of the earth

  930. with the gospel.

  931. We could establish

  932. the Baptist missionary society

  933. and we could reach

  934. the ends of the world.

  935. And the chairman

  936. of the council replied,

  937. he said,

  938. son,

  939. sit down.

  940. When God is pleased

  941. to convert the heathen,

  942. he will do it

  943. without your help

  944. or mine.

  945. Thankfully,

  946. William Carey

  947. had a much more accurate

  948. theology of God's sovereignty

  949. and the mission of evangelism

  950. than the chairman.

  951. He went to the nations

  952. with confidence

  953. in a sovereign God

  954. with a zeal

  955. to share the gospel

  956. with the lost.

  957. Listen to what he wrote

  958. in 1805

  959. as we close.

  960. He said,

  961. we are firmly persuaded

  962. that Paul might plant

  963. in Apollos water

  964. in vain

  965. in any part of the world

  966. did not God

  967. give the increase.

  968. We are sure

  969. that only those

  970. ordained to eternal life

  971. will believe

  972. and that God alone

  973. can add to the church

  974. such as shall be saved.

  975. Nevertheless,

  976. we cannot but observe

  977. with admiration

  978. that Paul,

  979. the great champion

  980. for the glorious doctrine

  981. of free and sovereign grace,

  982. was the most conspicuous

  983. for his personal zeal

  984. in the word

  985. of persuading men

  986. to be reconciled

  987. to God.

  988. In this respect,

  989. he is a noble example

  990. for our imitation.

  991. Let's pray.

  992. God,

  993. we praise you

  994. for your wisdom.

  995. We praise you

  996. for your power,

  997. for your sovereignty

  998. that while we

  999. don't necessarily

  1000. understand

  1001. how you work,

  1002. Lord,

  1003. the mystery of salvation,

  1004. we trust

  1005. and we know

  1006. that you are good

  1007. and you are sovereign

  1008. working all things out

  1009. according to the counsel

  1010. of your will.

  1011. And we pray,

  1012. Lord,

1013. if there are any here

  1014. who are rejecting

  1015. the message

  1016. of the gospel

  1017. and living in unbelief,

  1018. we pray

  1019. that you would

  1020. even now

  1021. turn their hearts

  1022. to love

  1023. the glory of God.

  1024. We pray

  1025. for our non-believing

  1026. friends and family

  1027. and neighbors,

  1028. those in our community

  1029. who don't know you

1030. to the ends of the earth.

  1031. We pray,

  1032. God,

  1033. by your grace,

  1034. would you save them,

  1035. turn them to Christ,

  1036. we ask,

  1037. in Jesus' name.

  1038. Amen.

  1039. Amen.

  1040. Amen.

  1041. Amen.

  1042. Amen.

  1043. Amen.

  1044. Amen.

  1045. Amen.

  1046. Amen.

  1047. Amen.

  1048. Amen.

  1049. Amen.
