  1. Amen. Thank you, Treg.

  2. Please take your Bibles and open them up to John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  3. John chapter 14 this morning. Our passage is going to be chapter 14, verses 1 through 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  4. If you didn't bring your own Bible, that's okay. We provide those for you in the seat backs in front of you.

  5. And if you don't have a Bible at all, you can take that Bible home with you as our gift to you.

  6. But we do ask that you open up God's Word because we'll be reading from here John chapter 14, verses 1 through 14.

    John 14:1–14

  7. And when you found it there in your Bible, if you would stand in honor of God's Word as I read.

  8. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  9. Believe in God, believe also in me.

  10. In my Father's house are many rooms.

  11. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

  12. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself,

  13. that where I am you may be also.

  14. And you know the way to where I am going.

  15. Thomas said to him,

  16. Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?

  17. Jesus said to him,

  18. I am the way and the truth and the life.

  19. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  20. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.

  21. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.

  22. Philip said to him,

  23. Lord, show us the Father and it is enough for us.

  24. Jesus said to him,

  25. Have I been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip?

  26. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  27. How can you say, show us the Father?

  28. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

  29. The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own authority,

  30. but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

  31. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,

  32. or else believe on account of the works themselves.

  33. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  34. whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do.

  35. And greater works than these will he do,

  36. because I am going to the Father.

  37. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do,

  38. that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  39. If you ask me anything in my name,

  40. I will do it.

  41. This is the holy word of God.

  42. If you would be seated as we pray once more.

  43. Lord, as we open up your word,

  44. we ask, Father, in the name of Christ,

  45. would you show us your glory?

  46. Point us, point our attention, point our hearts

  47. to the goodness and the worthiness of Christ,

  48. and lead us to worship you, we pray.

  49. In Christ's name.

  50. Amen.

  51. Well, somehow, as you can see,

  52. it is Christmas time.

  53. Which means Christmas music is on the radio.

  54. Houses and churches are being decorated,

  55. set up for Christmas.

  56. All the preparations are being made.

  57. Many of you are preparing, like I am,

  58. to go and visit family for the holiday season.

  59. But we know as Christians,

  60. this Advent season, Christmas season,

  61. is preparation for the coming of King Jesus.

  62. It's about his birth,

  63. and it's about his coming again.

  64. And so we take our time,

  65. during this Advent season,

  66. to prepare our hearts

  67. to worship the coming King.

  68. Well, this year, over the next four weeks,

  69. these four Sundays of Advent,

  70. what I want us to focus on is

  71. four gifts from God to his people.

  72. Y'all thought we might pause

  73. from the Gospel of John,

  74. but as we look through the Gospel of John

  75. and where we were in this book,

  76. I realized, really,

  77. there's no good reason to stop.

  78. These are four good gifts

  79. from God to his people.

  80. So each Advent Sunday,

  81. we'll see another gift

  82. from Jesus to his followers.

  83. These are good gifts to you, believer.

  84. But this week, here in John 14,

  85. the gift is a little bit peculiar.

  86. As we prepare ourselves for his coming,

  87. this week, we're celebrating

  88. the gift of his leaving.

  89. It's the gift of his departure.

  90. John, throughout the Gospel of John,

  91. he's been telling us

  92. that after years and years

  93. and years of waiting,

  94. years of anticipating,

  95. years of longing for the Messiah to come,

  96. he has finally come.

  97. He's been born in the stable.

  98. The Word has become flesh.

  99. He's dwelt among us.

  100. He's born as a baby there in Bethlehem.

  101. He grows up.

  102. John demonstrates his ministry there

  103. among his disciples,

  104. all of the signs,

  105. all of the miracles,

  106. all of the teaching.

  107. He's finally here.

  108. The Messiah has finally come.

  109. And now he says,

  110. I'm leaving.

  111. What kind of gift is that?

  112. What good can possibly come

  113. from the departure of Christ?

  114. How is his departure a gift to us?

  115. Well, I want to show us

  116. three ways this morning

  117. from this chapter in John 14.

  118. Three ways his leaving is a gift to us.

  119. This will be our outline this morning.

  120. If you're taking notes,

  121. I think that that helps you to follow along.

  122. Three ways Jesus' departure is a gift to us.

  123. First, we see that his leaving secures our coming.

  124. His leaving secures our coming.

  125. Look there with me to verse 1, chapter 14.

  126. Jesus is preparing for his final march to the cross.

  127. He's preparing to suffer.

  128. He's preparing to be humiliated.

  129. He's preparing ultimately to die.

  130. And yet look what he does.

  131. He turns to his disciples

  132. and he comforts them.

  133. Look there to what he says in verse 1.

  134. He says,

  135. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  136. He comforts them.

  137. He assures them that his leaving

  138. is with purpose.

  139. It's for their good.

  140. He says he's not taking something away from them.

  141. In fact, his departure is giving them

  142. something wonderful.

  143. He comforts them

  144. with a three-fold promise here.

  145. Look with me starting to verse 2.

  146. He says,

  147. First,

  148. In my father's house,

  149. there are many rooms.

  150. You know,

  151. when I lived in North Myrtle Beach,

  152. I got to know a man by the name of Gene.

  153. And I would lead a men's Bible study there

  154. at Bolino's on the corner

  155. right by Cherry Grove Beach,

  156. if y'all know where that is.

  157. And Gene would come

  158. and you could tell that he was growing,

  159. he was learning,

  160. that he was there every single week.

  161. But it didn't matter what text we were studying,

  162. didn't matter what topic we were discussing,

  163. every single week,

  164. Gene asked the same question.

  165. He said,

  166. Jonathan,

  167. what does it mean

  168. that in my father's house

  169. are many rooms?

  170. And what do those rooms look like?

  171. What can I expect when I get there?

  172. What are the accommodations there in glory?

  173. Every week he would ask that question.

  174. And so I really ought to have

  175. a better answer for you.

  176. But sadly, I'm sorry to say,

  177. I can't tell you exactly

  178. what these rooms look like.

  179. But I can tell you,

  180. I don't think the point of this promise

  181. is for us to worry about the accommodations.

  182. Some translations,

  183. you know,

  184. they say,

  185. in my father's house

  186. are many mansions.

  187. We've all heard the old hymns,

  188. Elvis Presley saying,

  189. I've got a mansion

  190. down over the hilltop.

  191. And there's some really interesting,

  192. in my opinion,

  193. really interesting history there

  194. of why some versions say mansions,

  195. other versions say houses,

  196. other versions say rooms,

  197. rather, excuse me.

  198. And I read up on that.

  199. I got my argument all together,

  200. the description,

  201. I had the explanation fully ready

  202. to give to you

  203. why I prefer the translation

  204. rooms to houses.

  205. And then I shared all of that

  206. with somebody who's much,

  207. much wiser than I am.

  208. And she said,

  209. really,

  210. I don't need to know all of this.

  211. So I'll spare you.

  212. And she was right.

  213. You know,

  214. the point is not for us

  215. to argue about accommodations,

  216. mansions against rooms,

  217. whatever that room might look like.

  218. Jesus is assuring his disciples

  219. and he's assuring you,

  220. he's assuring us, believer,

  221. that there is room enough for you

  222. in the house of God.

  223. That is an astounding promise,

  224. is it not?

  225. That there is room in the Father's house.

  226. And what a comfort that is

  227. to know that no matter

  228. what happens to us here,

  229. no matter what loss we may endure here,

  230. no matter what suffering

  231. we may endure here,

  232. no matter what tragedy

  233. we may endure here,

  234. no matter what may be taken

  235. from us here,

  236. this promise cannot be taken

  237. from you.

  238. There is room

  239. in the Father's house.

  240. Not only that,

  241. Jesus says,

  242. second part of this promise here,

  243. he says,

  244. I'm leaving now

  245. to go and prepare your place.

  246. And this is the beauty

  247. of the second part of the promise.

  248. Jesus isn't just leaving,

  249. he says in verse 2,

  250. that he goes to prepare

  251. a place for his disciples.

  252. You know,

  253. my brother Gene wound up,

  254. he died a couple years ago.

  255. And as I heard the news

  256. of his passing

  257. and as I went to his funeral,

  258. this verse was all

  259. I could think about.

  260. And I will never read

  261. this verse again

  262. without thinking of Gene

  263. and him asking me this question

  264. every single week.

  265. What are those rooms like?

  266. I don't know exactly

  267. what Gene saw

  268. when he entered into glory,

  269. but I know

  270. because of Jesus' words

  271. right here,

  272. this promise to him

  273. and to us

  274. that he found

  275. a place prepared

  276. just for him.

  277. There's room

  278. in the house of God

  279. for him.

  280. You know,

  281. ironically,

  282. this is the opposite

  283. of the Christmas story,

  284. isn't it?

  285. And we know

  286. the Christmas story.

  287. Jesus,

  288. the Son of God,

  289. became man.

  290. He entered into the womb

  291. of the Virgin Mary.

  292. The time came for her

  293. to give birth.

  294. And what happened?

  295. There was no room

  296. for him,

  297. for her,

  298. in the end.

  299. Before he was even born,

  300. he was turned away.

  301. He was rejected.

  302. There was no room

  303. for God

  304. in the house of man.

  305. But Jesus says here,

  306. in me,

  307. because of me,

  308. through me,

  309. through faith in me,

  310. there is room

  311. for sinners

  312. in the house of God.

  313. That should amaze us.

  314. Jesus has left

  315. to prepare a place

  316. for sinners like us.

  317. And the best part

  318. of the promise,

  319. verse 3,

  320. he says,

  321. if I go and prepare

  322. a place for you,

  323. he says,

  324. I will come again

  325. and take you to myself

  326. that we may be

  327. where he is

  328. also.

  329. One reason that I love

  330. this Advent season,

  331. as we've already said,

  332. is because we're not

  333. just looking backwards

  334. to the first coming

  335. of Christ.

  336. We're looking forwards

  337. to when he will come again.

  338. And this is how

  339. the Christian life

  340. is lived.

  341. We live in between

  342. the two comings

  343. of Christ.

  344. We live with one eye

  345. towards his first coming

  346. and all that he accomplished

  347. in his perfect life,

  348. his sacrificial death,

  349. his victorious resurrection,

  350. and we look with another eye

  351. looking forwards

  352. towards his second coming.

  353. He has promised us.

  354. He has gone to the Father

  355. to prepare our place

  356. and he will certainly

  357. come again

  358. to take us

  359. that we may be

  360. where he is also.

  361. Jesus is leaving,

  362. secures our coming.

  363. Not only this.

  364. Second,

  365. Jesus is leaving,

  366. strengthens our believing.

  367. The second reason

  368. this is a gift for us,

  369. his leaving

  370. strengthens our believing.

  371. Look here to verses

  372. four through eleven.

  373. Jesus,

  374. here in verses four through eleven,

  375. he tells us

  376. some fundamental truths

  377. that must be believed

  378. if you and I

  379. are going to go

  380. to the Father.

  381. See, the disciples,

  382. they had a hard time

  383. understanding exactly

  384. what Jesus was talking about.

  385. That's not unusual for them.

  386. They kind of bumble around

  387. throughout the Gospel

  388. of John.

  389. They were often

  390. so stuck

  391. in the physical

  392. understanding of things

  393. that they just had

  394. a hard time

  395. understanding

  396. the message

  397. of what Jesus

  398. was trying to communicate

  399. to them.

  400. And so they had

  401. a problem here.

  402. Jesus says,

  403. I'm going away.

  404. I'm going to the Father.

  405. Apparently,

  406. he's preparing

  407. a room for them

  408. somewhere,

  409. but they don't know

  410. where he's going.

  411. They don't know

  412. how to get there.

  413. They want a map.

  414. They want a destination.

  415. They want step-by-step

  416. instructions

  417. of how they might get

  418. from point A

  419. to point B.

  420. But Jesus doesn't

  421. give them that,

  422. does he?

  423. Look there

  424. to verse four.

  425. Jesus tells them,

  426. you know the way

  427. to where I am going.

  428. But Thomas,

  429. he spoke up

  430. on behalf of the disciples

  431. and he said,

  432. Lord,

  433. we do not know

  434. where you are going.

  435. How can we possibly

  436. know the way?

  437. Give us a map.

  438. Tell us how to get there.

  439. Show us where to go.

  440. What are we supposed to do?

  441. How do we get

  442. to the Father?

  443. But look what he says.

  444. Instead of giving them

  445. directions to follow,

  446. what does he do?

  447. Jesus tells them

  448. several truths

  449. to believe.

  450. Jesus looks at him

  451. and he says,

  452. I am the way

  453. in the truth

  454. in the life.

  455. See,

  456. in order for us

  457. to go to the Father,

  458. we must know

  459. the way.

  460. We agree with Thomas

  461. on that point.

  462. We need to know

  463. the way to the Father.

  464. We must believe

  465. what Jesus says,

  466. that he

  467. and he alone

  468. is the way.

  469. See,

  470. we need to understand

  471. that the path

  472. to God,

  473. the way to God

  474. is not simply

  475. a path for us

  476. to follow,

  477. is a person

  478. for us to know.

  479. Jesus says,

  480. you want to go

  481. to the Father?

  482. What I'm giving you

  483. is not a step-by-step

  484. list of instructions

  485. to follow.

  486. It's not a checklist

  487. to keep.

  488. It's not a religious

  489. system to obey.

  490. I am giving you

  491. myself.

  492. I am the way.

  493. Believe in me.

  494. Jesus,

  495. in his first coming,

  496. he didn't just

  497. simply come to

  498. give us directions

  499. that we might

  500. be familiar

  501. with the way.

  502. He is the way.

  503. He hasn't just

  504. come to teach us

  505. the truth.

  506. He is the truth.

  507. He hasn't just

  508. come to give us

  509. eternal life.

  510. He is eternal life.

  511. He hasn't just

  512. come that we go

  513. through him

  514. to get to the Father.

  515. When we come

  516. to him,

  517. when we come

  518. to Christ,

  519. we come to

  520. the Father.

  521. you must know

  522. the way.

  523. As we enter

  524. into this Advent

  525. season and this

  526. Christmas season,

  527. as we get so busy

  528. with all of the

  529. traditions,

  530. the festivities,

  531. all the busyness

  532. of what we all

  533. go through

  534. in the month

  535. of December,

  536. take time

  537. and pause

  538. and ask yourself,

  539. make absolutely

  540. certain,

  541. do you know

  542. the way?

  543. Do you know

  544. Christ?

  545. Do you trust

  546. him?

  547. Do you believe

  548. him?

  549. You must know

  550. the way.

  551. See,

  552. this is a

  553. statement of

  554. exclusivity

  555. and availability,

  556. isn't it?

  557. I am the way,

  558. the truth,

  559. the life.

  560. No one comes

  561. to the Father

  562. except through me.

  563. It's exclusive

  564. and it is available.

  565. The sinners like us

  566. ought to rejoice

  567. that there is

  568. a way.

  569. There is a way

  570. to the Father

  571. for sinners like us

  572. who have earned

  573. no standing

  574. before a holy God

  575. to be welcomed.

  576. We have been given

  577. a way.

  578. We ought to rejoice

  579. that there is a way.

  580. We ought to rejoice

  581. that there is

  582. truth

  583. in a culture,

  584. in a world

  585. where truth

  586. is constantly

  587. fluctuating,

  588. is constantly updating,

  589. what's morally

  590. acceptable,

  591. the moral compass

  592. of our culture

  593. is ebbing

  594. and flowing

  595. by the minute.

  596. It's exhausting

  597. to keep up.

  598. We ought to rejoice

  599. that there is

  600. truth.

  601. Church,

  602. we ought to rejoice

  603. that there is

  604. real,

  605. genuine

  606. life

  607. available

  608. for any

  609. sinner

  610. who would turn

  611. to Christ.

  612. The false promises

  613. of this world,

  614. everything promises

  615. you fullness

  616. of life.

  617. Nothing comes

  618. through,

  619. nothing but Jesus.

  620. It is available

  621. for any sinner

  622. who would turn

  623. to Christ.

  624. It is available

  625. and it is exclusive.

  626. You may have

  627. heard the phrase,

  628. the mountain

  629. has many paths.

  630. Have you ever

  631. heard that?

  632. Apparently,

  633. it's a religious,

  634. a Hawaiian

  635. religious saying

  636. and it's meant

  637. to communicate

  638. that there's

  639. many equally

  640. valid paths

  641. to God.

  642. And that's how

  643. our culture

  644. understands religion.

  645. It's completely

  646. inclusive.

  647. the only

  648. acceptable view

  649. is that all

  650. views are

  651. acceptable.

  652. But if we really

  653. listen to what

  654. Jesus is saying

  655. here,

  656. we don't really

  657. have that option,

  658. do we?

  659. Christianity,

  660. according to Jesus,

  661. is either the only

  662. true religion

  663. or it's a

  664. complete sham.

  665. It's either

  666. worthy of

  667. total acceptance

  668. or total

  669. rejection.

  670. But what it

  671. can't be is

  672. just another

  673. equally valid

  674. path up the

  675. mountain.

  676. Jesus doesn't

  677. give us

  678. that option.

  679. Listen again

  680. to what he

  681. says.

  682. He says,

  683. I am

  684. the way,

  685. I am

  686. the truth,

  687. I am

  688. the life,

  689. no one

  690. comes to the

  691. Father

  692. except through

  693. me.

  694. Jesus

  695. says,

  696. sure,

  697. there may be

  698. many paths

  699. up the mountain,

  700. but only one

  701. path gets you

  702. up the proverbial

  703. mountain.

  704. You must come

  705. through me

  706. faith.

  707. By faith,

  708. by believing,

  709. by receiving

  710. that Jesus

  711. and Jesus

  712. alone came

  713. to live in

  714. the place

  715. of sinners.

  716. That Jesus

  717. and Jesus

  718. alone came

  719. to die

  720. in the place

  721. of sinners.

  722. And Jesus

  723. and Jesus

  724. alone

  725. rose from

  726. the grave.

  727. So Jesus

  728. and Jesus

  729. alone can

  730. offer eternal

  731. life to any

  732. who come to

  733. him in faith.

  734. Jesus

  735. says,

  736. to go to

  737. the Father

  738. you must

  739. come through

  740. him.

  741. How will

  742. we do

  743. that?

  744. How will

  745. we do

  746. that?

  747. He tells

  748. us,

  749. to go to

  750. the Father

  751. through him

  752. we must

  753. see the

  754. Father

  755. in him.

  756. In other

  757. words,

  758. we must

  759. believe that

  760. Jesus is

  761. God in

  762. the flesh.

  763. That he's

  764. not just the

  765. way to

  766. God.

  767. That he

  768. is God.

  769. That he

  770. is worthy

  771. of our

  772. worship.

  773. That he's

  774. worthy of

  775. our devotion.

  776. That he's

  777. worthy of

  778. our praise.

  779. That Jesus

  780. Christ is

  781. worthy of

  782. our life.

  783. Thomas has

  784. had his

  785. turn and

  786. now Philip

  787. gets to

  788. say his

  789. piece.

  790. He says,

  791. Lord, show

  792. us the

  793. Father and

  794. it is

  795. enough for

  796. us.

  797. You see

  798. what he's

  799. saying there?

  800. He's

  801. saying,

  802. Jesus, you

  803. are saying

  804. some bold

  805. things and

  806. we want to

  807. believe what

  808. you're saying.

  809. We want to

  810. accept what

  811. you're saying.

  812. Jesus, if you

  813. would just

  814. show us

  815. God, maybe

  816. that would

  817. help just a

  818. little bit.

  819. I wonder if

  820. you ever feel

  821. that way.

  822. God, just

  823. show me.

  824. Show me a

  825. piece of who

  826. you are and

  827. maybe that would

  828. strengthen my

  829. faith.

  830. Let me see

  831. you.

  832. I'll believe

  833. that you are

  834. who you say

  835. you are.

  836. Look what

  837. Jesus says

  838. to Philip.

  839. Jesus says

  840. to him,

  841. have I been

  842. with you so

  843. long and you

  844. still do not

  845. know me,

  846. Philip?

  847. Whoever has

  848. seen me

  849. has seen

  850. the Father.

  851. How can you

  852. say show us

  853. the Father?

  854. Do you not

  855. believe that I

  856. am in the

  857. Father and the

  858. Father is in

  859. me?

  860. The words that

  861. I say, I

  862. don't speak on

  863. my own

  864. authority, but

  865. the Father who

  866. dwells in me

  867. does his

  868. works.

  869. Believe that I

  870. am in the

  871. Father and the

  872. Father is in

  873. me or else

  874. believe on

  875. account of

  876. the works

  877. themselves.

  878. What is he

  879. saying?

  880. He's saying

  881. you have

  882. seen God.

  883. You have

  884. seen enough

  885. Philip.

  886. You have

  887. seen my

  888. works.

  889. You have

  890. heard my

  891. words.

  892. If you

  893. have seen

  894. me, you

  895. have seen

  896. the Father.

  897. If you

  898. know me, you

  899. know the

  900. Father.

  901. If you

  902. believe me, you

  903. believe the

  904. Father.

  905. If you

  906. worship me, you

  907. worship the

  908. Father.

  909. If you

  910. come to

  911. me, you

  912. come to

  913. the Father.

  914. And only

  915. in me can

  916. anyone come

  917. to him.

  918. Believe in

  919. me.

  920. Believe also

  921. in God, he

  922. said in

  923. verse 1.

  924. To come to

  925. the Father, you

  926. must come to

  927. Jesus and see

  928. him for who

  929. he is.

  930. Now, that's

  931. one thing for

  932. the disciples,

  933. isn't it?

  934. The disciples

  935. who lived and

  936. walked with

  937. Jesus, who

  938. saw him face

  939. to face, who

  940. could reach

  941. out and

  942. touch Jesus.

  943. But what

  944. about us?

  945. 2,000

  946. something years

  947. later, why

  948. are we

  949. gathered here

  950. worshiping this

  951. man, Jesus

  952. Christ?

  953. How can we

  954. claim to

  955. have seen

  956. him for

  957. who he

  958. is and

  959. to believe

  960. him that

  961. he is God?

  962. Why are we

  963. here celebrating

  964. and honoring

  965. this man, Jesus

  966. Christ?

  967. I'm going to

  968. make a bold

  969. assumption about

  970. you, which

  971. is that none

  972. of us have

  973. ever seen

  974. Jesus.

  975. Meaning, none

  976. of us are

  977. 2,000 years

  978. old.

  979. None of

  980. us have

  981. physically

  982. seen Jesus.

  983. Why do

  984. we believe?

  985. We believe

  986. because by

  987. the grace

  988. of God,

  989. the message

  990. of the

  991. gospel came

  992. to us

  993. into our

  994. ears and

  995. by the

  996. spirit into

  997. our hearts.

  998. What does

  999. Paul say in

  1000. Romans?

  1001. Faith comes

  1002. through seeing.

  1003. What does

  1004. he say?

  1005. Faith comes

  1006. through, help

  1007. me, through

  1008. hearing.

  1009. And hearing

  1010. through the

  1011. word of

  1012. Christ.

  1013. See, his

  1014. leaving at

  1015. the completion

  1016. of his

  1017. work, his

  1018. departing to

  1019. go to be

  1020. with the

  1021. Father, his

  1022. leaving has

  1023. inaugurated the

  1024. age of

  1025. believing.

  1026. His leaving

  1027. has inaugurated

  1028. the age of

  1029. spiritual

  1030. seeing.

  1031. His leaving

  1032. has inaugurated

  1033. the age of

  1034. the church.

  1035. The reason

  1036. why we

  1037. are here in

  1038. All-in-Doll,

  1039. South Carolina

  1040. believing that

  1041. Jesus Christ is

  1042. God in the

  1043. flesh is because

  1044. by his spirit he

  1045. has opened your

  1046. eyes to see it

  1047. through the

  1048. word.

  1049. None of us

  1050. has seen

  1051. Jesus, but we

  1052. were given

  1053. eyes to see

  1054. and a heart

  1055. to believe

  1056. that he is

  1057. who he says

  1058. he is.

  1059. And this is

  1060. what Peter

  1061. says in

  1062. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1063. chapter 1.

  1064. It says,

  1065. Blessed be the

  1066. God and

  1067. Father of our

  1068. Lord Jesus

  1069. Christ.

  1070. According to

  1071. his great

  1072. mercy he has

  1073. caused us to

  1074. be born again

  1075. to a living

  1076. hope through

  1077. the resurrection

  1078. of Jesus

  1079. Christ from

  1080. the dead.

  1081. To an

  1082. inheritance that

  1083. is imperishable,

  1084. undefiled,

  1085. and unfading,

  1086. kept in heaven

  1087. for you who

  1088. by God's power

  1089. are being guarded

  1090. through faith

  1091. for a salvation

  1092. ready to be

  1093. revealed in the

  1094. last time.

  1095. In this you

  1096. rejoice, though

  1097. now for a

  1098. little while,

  1099. if necessary,

  1100. you have been

  1101. grieved by

  1102. various trials,

  1103. so that the

  1104. tested genuineness

  1105. of your faith,

  1106. more precious

  1107. than gold that

  1108. perishes though

  1109. it is tested by

  1110. fire, may be

  1111. found to result

  1112. in praise and

  1113. glory and honor

  1114. at the revelation

  1115. of Jesus Christ.

  1116. Listen to this.

  1117. Though you have

  1118. not seen him,

  1119. you love him.

  1120. Though you do

  1121. not now see him,

  1122. you believe in

  1123. him.

  1124. And rejoice

  1125. with joy that

  1126. is inexpressible

  1127. and filled with

  1128. glory, obtaining

  1129. the outcome of

  1130. your faith and

  1131. the salvation of

  1132. your souls.

  1133. Does this describe

  1134. you?

  1135. Though you have

  1136. not seen him,

  1137. you love him.

  1138. Does your heart

  1139. love him?

  1140. Does your heart

  1141. rejoice in him

  1142. with joy

  1143. inexpressible?

  1144. If it does,

  1145. church, this is a

  1146. miracle of God's

  1147. grace.

  1148. grace.

  1149. This is the work

  1150. of the spirit

  1151. to open up the

  1152. eyes of those

  1153. who are spiritually

  1154. blind that they

  1155. might see the

  1156. glory of God

  1157. in the gospel of

  1158. Jesus Christ.

  1159. It is his work,

  1160. but also,

  1161. guess what?

  1162. It is now also

  1163. our work,

  1164. which leads us

  1165. to our final

  1166. benefit of his

  1167. departure.

  1168. Third, his

  1169. leaving supercharges

  1170. our working.

  1171. His leaving

  1172. supercharges

  1173. our working.

  1174. What is the

  1175. church to do

  1176. in between the

  1177. two comings of

  1178. Christ?

  1179. We don't just

  1180. sit on our

  1181. hands and wait

  1182. patiently for

  1183. Christ's return.

  1184. We don't just

  1185. sit around and

  1186. wait for him to

  1187. come while we do

  1188. nothing.

  1189. No.

  1190. Now, because of

  1191. his departure,

  1192. because he has

  1193. left and ascended

  1194. to go to the

  1195. Father, we are

  1196. empowered to do

  1197. the work of

  1198. God with the

  1199. power of God

  1200. for the glory

  1201. of God.

  1202. Look there to

  1203. verse 11 again.

  1204. And Jesus said

  1205. that one strong

  1206. reason to believe

1207. that he is in the

  1208. Father and the

  1209. Father was in him

  1210. was the works

  1211. that he was

  1212. doing.

  1213. Who can claim

  1214. to do the

  1215. works of Christ?

  1216. He rose a man

  1217. from the grave,

  1218. Lazarus.

  1219. He turned water

  1220. into wine.

  1221. He healed the

  1222. sick.

  1223. He gave sight

  1224. to the blind.

  1225. The works

  1226. testified that he

  1227. is who he

  1228. claims to be.

  1229. Believe me

  1230. that I am in

  1231. the Father and

  1232. the Father is in

  1233. me, or else

  1234. believe on account

  1235. of the works

  1236. themselves.

  1237. See, his

  1238. works, they

  1239. declared and they

  1240. demonstrated that

  1241. he is God in

  1242. the flesh.

  1243. That's the

  1244. purpose of the

  1245. works of Christ.

  1246. They were to

  1247. draw attention

  1248. to himself as

  1249. God for the

  1250. faith of his

  1251. people and the

  1252. glory of God.

  1253. Now, guess

  1254. what?

  1255. He says,

  1256. Christian, you

  1257. get to go

  1258. about the same

  1259. work.

  1260. Look what he

  1261. says in verse

  1262. 12.

  1263. This ought to

  1264. absolutely floor

  1265. us.

  1266. He says,

  1267. truly, truly, I

  1268. say to you,

  1269. whoever believes

  1270. in me, do you

  1271. believe in him?

  1272. This is for you.

  1273. Whoever believes

  1274. in me will also

  1275. do the works

  1276. that I do.

  1277. And greater

  1278. works than

  1279. these he will

  1280. do because I

  1281. am going to

  1282. the Father.

  1283. Because I am

  1284. going to the

  1285. Father.

  1286. The church is

  1287. the body of

  1288. Christ.

  1289. Christ is the

  1290. head of the

  1291. church.

  1292. And now, the

  1293. church, because

  1294. of Jesus'

  1295. departure, we

  1296. go about God's

  1297. work of declaring

  1298. and demonstrating

  1299. that Jesus

  1300. Christ is Lord

  1301. to the glory of

  1302. God the Father.

  1303. Now, that work

  1304. might take a

  1305. thousand different

  1306. manifestations.

  1307. That might look

  1308. a thousand

  1309. different ways.

  1310. The work itself

  1311. is as diverse

  1312. as the

  1313. giftings God

  1314. has given the

  1315. body of Christ.

  1316. It may look like

  1317. praying for one

  1318. another or serving

  1319. one another or

  1320. using our gifts to

  1321. build up the body

  1322. of Christ.

  1323. It might look like

  1324. works of ministry

  1325. or works of

  1326. mercy or works of

  1327. evangelism.

  1328. It can look a

  1329. million different

  1330. ways.

  1331. But the point,

  1332. the aim, is the

  1333. same as Jesus'

  1334. work, which is

  1335. to declare and to

  1336. demonstrate that

  1337. Jesus Christ is

  1338. God.

  1339. He says, this

  1340. ought to floor us,

  1341. church, how in

  1342. the world can our

  1343. work be even

  1344. greater than

  1345. Christ's work?

  1346. Think about this

  1347. with me.

  1348. His work now

  1349. through us, now

  1350. that he has

  1351. departed, his

  1352. work is now

  1353. through us

  1354. greater in scope

  1355. than when he was

  1356. here on earth.

  1357. It is no longer

  1358. limited to one

  1359. small area of the

  1360. world.

  1361. This work, this

  1362. Christ-exalting

  1363. God-glorifying

  1364. work is now

  1365. being done all

  1366. over the globe.

  1367. He sent his

  1368. disciples out and

  1369. said, you will be

  1370. my witnesses in

  1371. Jerusalem and in

  1372. Judea and in

  1373. Samaria to the

  1374. uttermost ends of

  1375. the world.

  1376. Go declare and

  1377. demonstrate that

  1378. Jesus Christ is

  1379. Lord.

  1380. Go and make my

  1381. name known.

  1382. It's greater in

  1383. scope.

  1384. His work now

  1385. through us is

  1386. also greater in

  1387. clarity.

  1388. We have a

  1389. finished gospel.

  1390. We have the

  1391. life and the

  1392. death and the

  1393. resurrection of

  1394. Christ to believe

  1395. and to proclaim.

  1396. We have a

  1397. complete scripture,

  1398. a complete word of

  1399. God to believe and

  1400. to obey and to

  1401. proclaim.

  1402. His work is

  1403. greater in clarity

  1404. now that he's

  1405. gone to the

  1406. Father.

  1407. And because of

  1408. this, now that

  1409. he's departed, his

  1410. work through us is

  1411. greater in power to

  1412. save.

  1413. You heard the

  1414. verse that Dreg

  1415. prayed just a

  1416. moment ago.

  1417. I'm not ashamed of

  1418. the gospel, Paul

  1419. says.

  1420. For it is the

  1421. power of God for

  1422. the salvation of

  1423. any who believe.

  1424. To the Jew first

  1425. and also to the

  1426. Greek.

  1427. As the gospel of

  1428. Jesus Christ goes

  1429. forth to the ends

  1430. of the earth,

  1431. through the

  1432. witness of the

  1433. church, spiritually

  1434. blind, are

  1435. seeing, believing,

  1436. coming to faith and

  1437. coming into the

  1438. kingdom.

  1439. That's the story of

  1440. every single

  1441. Christian in this

  1442. room.

  1443. Somehow, in some

  1444. way, by God's

  1445. grace, the word of

1446. God came to you in

  1447. power and you

  1448. believed.

  1449. church, don't

1450. you want to be a

  1451. part of that

  1452. work?

  1453. Don't you want to

1454. be a part of the

  1455. work that God is

  1456. doing in the

  1457. world?

  1458. If you do, good

  1459. news, he has

  1460. promised you

  1461. everything you

  1462. need to go about

  1463. the work of God.

  1464. He says here,

  1465. whatever you ask

  1466. in my name, this

1467. I will do that the

  1468. Father may be

  1469. glorified in the

  1470. Son.

  1471. If you ask me

  1472. anything in my

  1473. name, I will do

  1474. it.

  1475. Church, we

  1476. ought to know

  1477. this is not a

  1478. blank check to

  1479. ask God for

  1480. whatever we want,

  1481. whatever we want

  1482. to do to

  1483. manipulate the

  1484. hand of God to

  1485. fulfill our

  1486. agenda.

  1487. This is a

  1488. promise of power

  1489. to complete the

  1490. agenda of God.

  1491. If we would

  1492. commit ourselves to

  1493. His work, we

  1494. have every bit of

  1495. power and provision

  1496. we need to do

  1497. it.

1498. If we pray in the

  1499. name of Christ.

  1500. Church, I

  1501. invite you and

  1502. I urge you to

  1503. pray that God

  1504. would magnify His

  1505. name through us.

  1506. That this

  1507. Christmas season

  1508. that God would

  1509. do His work

  1510. through you.

  1511. If you feel

  1512. inadequate for that,

  1513. wonderful.

  1514. You're at a

  1515. perfect place to

  1516. ask Him to

  1517. work.

  1518. Would you pray

  1519. that God would

  1520. magnify His name

  1521. through this

  1522. church body?

  1523. That He would

  1524. use us and speak

  1525. through us and

  1526. continue His work

  1527. through us in

  1528. ways that are

  1529. beyond our

  1530. greatest expectations

  1531. and dreams.

  1532. Don't you want to

1533. be a part of that?

  1534. Step number one

  1535. is to believe it.

  1536. Make certain

  1537. that you know

  1538. the way.

  1539. Make certain

  1540. that you know

  1541. the Lord Jesus

  1542. Christ.

  1543. And if you do,

  1544. then church,

  1545. join Him in His

  1546. glorious work.

  1547. And this Christmas

  1548. as we prepare

  1549. ourselves for His

  1550. coming,

  1551. the birth of

  1552. Emmanuel,

  1553. God with us.

  1554. Church,

  1555. who is it that

  1556. the Lord is

  1557. placing on your

  1558. heart that needs

  1559. to hear the

  1560. message of the

  1561. gospel?

  1562. Who is it near

  1563. you within your

  1564. sphere of influence

  1565. that needs to

  1566. hear the word

  1567. of truth?

  1568. That there is a

  1569. way to the

  1570. Father for sinners

  1571. like us.

  1572. Join Him in His

  1573. work.

  1574. His name is Jesus.

  1575. He has come and

  1576. He will come

  1577. again.

  1578. Let's pray.

  1579. Lord, we thank

  1580. You that You

  1581. have come.

  1582. We thank You for

  1583. the good news of

  1584. the gospel, the

  1585. promise that any

  1586. who come to You

  1587. will find forgiveness

  1588. for their sins and

  1589. will find acceptance

1590. in the house of the

  1591. Father that our

  1592. eternal destination

  1593. is secure for those

  1594. who trust in You.

  1595. and we pray,

  1596. Lord, asking with

  1597. confidence, not in

  1598. ourselves, but in

  1599. Your power, God,

  1600. would You use us

  1601. and work through us

  1602. for Your glory?

  1603. It is our desire,

  1604. God, that we would

  1605. be about the work

1606. of God, not in our

  1607. strength, Lord, but

  1608. through Your power.

1609. We pray all this in

  1610. Jesus' name.

  1611. Amen.
