  1. Amen.

  2. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  3. John chapter 14. We did the first half last week and we'll close it out this week.

    John 14 chapter mention

  4. Our passage will be John 14 verses 15 through 31.

    John 14:15–31

  5. I do ask that you have a Bible open. This will help you to follow along.

  6. If you don't have your own Bible, if you didn't bring a Bible with you,

  7. we have Bibles in the seat backs there in front of you.

  8. If you don't have a Bible at all that you can call your own, you can take that one home with you.

  9. It's our gift to you.

  10. So we want you to have a copy of God's Word.

  11. We don't think that there's any better way for you to grow in your knowledge and love for the Lord

  12. than to have a Bible open and to hear from His Word.

  13. So John chapter 14 verses 15 through 31.

    John 14:15–31

  14. When you've found that, I ask that you please stand in honor of the Word of God as I read.

  15. If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

  16. And I will ask the Father and He will give you another helper to be with you forever.

  17. Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.

  18. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

  19. I will not leave you as orphans.

  20. I will come to you.

  21. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me.

  22. Because I live, you also will live.

  23. In that day you will know that I am in my Father and you in me and I in you.

  24. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.

  25. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

  26. Judas, not Iscariot, said to him,

  27. Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world?

  28. Jesus answered him,

  29. If anyone loves me, he will keep my word.

  30. And my Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him.

  31. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words.

  32. And the word that you hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me.

  33. These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.

  34. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,

  35. he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

  36. Peace I leave with you.

  37. My peace I give to you.

  38. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

  39. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

  40. You heard me say to you,

  41. I am going away and I will come to you.

  42. If you loved me, you would have rejoiced,

  43. because I am going to the Father,

  44. for the Father is greater than I.

  45. And now I have told you,

  46. before it takes place,

  47. so that when it does take place,

  48. you may believe.

  49. I will no longer talk much with you,

  50. for the ruler of this world is coming.

  51. He has no claim on me,

  52. but I do as the Father has commanded me,

  53. so that the world may know that I love the Father.

  54. Father, arise, let us go from here.

  55. This is God's holy word.

  56. You would be seated, and let's pray once more.

  57. Lord, we thank you for this word that we've just heard,

  58. and we believe the promise that you've given us,

  59. that it does not ever return to you empty,

  60. but as often as it goes out,

  61. it always accomplishes the purposes for which you send it.

  62. So we pray now, Lord,

  63. that your word would come with power,

  64. and conviction in the Spirit.

  65. We pray in Jesus' name.

  66. Amen.

  67. Well, we are focusing on four gifts this Christmas season.

  68. Last week, we saw the peculiar gift of Jesus' departure.

  69. As we anticipate his coming this Christmas season,

  70. during the Advent season,

  71. we talk a lot about the coming of Christ.

  72. Well, last week, we saw that we should be just as excited

  73. about his departure.

  74. His leaving is no disadvantage to us.

  75. Why?

  76. Because his leaving secures our coming to be with him.

  77. His leaving, it strengthens our believing in him.

  78. His leaving supercharges our working in him.

  79. That was last week, gift number one.

  80. Here, this morning, in John 14, 15 through 31,

  81. Jesus tells us that with his departure comes another incredible gift.

  82. It's the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  83. When I was growing up, one of my family members,

  84. and I have to be careful because you never know who is listening online to these sermons,

  85. every year without fail,

  86. one of my family members would gift myself and my siblings coins for Christmas.

  87. Now, some of you may collect coins.

  88. You may give coins out as a gift, and so I want to be clear.

  89. Coins are great.

  90. They can be an excellent gift.

  91. But for me as a kid,

  92. I had no earthly idea what in the world I was supposed to do with a bunch of coins.

  93. And I knew that my parents had told me very clearly I was not to open the coins.

  94. I was not to play with the coins.

  95. I was not to touch the coins.

  96. And so in my mind, what good are the coins anyways?

  97. It was a wonderful, generous, valuable gift that I simply did not understand.

  98. Well, in a similar way, believer,

  99. all of us have been given a wonderful, generous, valuable gift in the Holy Spirit.

  100. But I'm afraid that if we're honest,

  101. many of us would say,

  102. well, we don't know exactly what to do with this gift of the Holy Spirit.

  103. Well, here in John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  104. Jesus, he teaches us four aspects of this gift.

  105. This will be our outline this morning if you're taking notes.

  106. Four aspects of the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  107. Hopefully this will help us understand this gift that we've been given.

  108. First, we see that the Holy Spirit is a powerful gift.

  109. The Holy Spirit is a powerful gift.

  110. You know, I think it's necessary here just to remind us briefly of what we saw last week

  111. in the first half of this chapter.

  112. If you were here last week,

  113. and if you were paying attention to everything that we said,

  114. all of these benefits of Jesus' departure,

  115. I hope that you were on the edge of your seat

  116. waiting for me to say,

  117. all of this is only possible through the Holy Spirit.

  118. I didn't say it last week.

  119. I had some self-control.

  120. I held it for us for this week.

  121. But we need to realize that all of the benefits of Christ leaving

  122. come to us by way of the Holy Spirit.

  123. Our security,

  124. our assurance that we will go to the place prepared for us in the Father's house,

  125. that is a work of the Holy Spirit.

  126. Our faith,

  127. the gift of faith,

  128. our believing,

  129. that is a work of God through the Holy Spirit.

  130. And our working,

  131. it is the Holy Spirit that empowers the work of the church.

  132. As we live in between the two comings of Christ,

  133. we live and we walk and we work in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  134. You remember last week from chapter 14, verse 12,

  135. Jesus makes this incredible promise to us,

  136. the astounding truth that we,

  137. the people of God,

  138. now do greater works than Christ

  139. because of His departure.

  140. Greater in scope,

  141. greater in clarity,

  142. greater in power to save.

  143. Do you remember that from last week?

  144. How is that even possible?

  145. It's only possible through the gift

  146. of the Holy Spirit.

  147. The Holy Spirit is the one who empowers the work of the church.

  148. You know,

  149. if you're still on track with our reading plan for the month of December,

  150. I won't ask you to raise your hands.

  151. We gave out a reading plan to take us through the month of December.

  152. If you're on track today,

  153. you will read Acts chapter 1 through 8.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  154. And in that,

  155. you'll read Acts 1, verse 8,

    Acts 1:8

  156. which says this promise from Jesus.

  157. You will receive what?

  158. Power.

  159. When the Holy Spirit comes upon you,

  160. and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

  161. and in Judea,

  162. and in Samaria,

  163. to the ends of the earth.

  164. Church, we should realize that that is our mission.

  165. We're promised God's power

  166. for God's work,

  167. for God's glory.

  168. You know, last Sunday evening,

  169. we had what I think was probably

  170. the most encouraging members meeting

  171. I've ever been a part of.

  172. If you were there,

  173. it was just a sweet time.

  174. Everybody got to share.

  175. Just recapping the year,

  176. what the Lord has done

  177. in and through us

  178. in the year 2023.

  179. Just about everybody in the room

  180. went around and shared something

  181. of what God has done.

  182. It was so deeply encouraging,

  183. but one part left me a little frustrated.

  184. I asked you,

  185. Church,

  186. what is our mission?

  187. We've had a whole year

  188. to get this down.

  189. What is our mission?

  190. And we fumbled,

  191. and we bumbled our way through it.

  192. We got there in the end,

  193. but I wanted to make sure

  194. we are crystal clear

  195. what our mission is,

  196. Church.

  197. Our mission

  198. is to magnify

  199. the glory of God

  200. in the gospel

  201. of Jesus Christ.

  202. That's our mission.

  203. to magnify

  204. the glory of God

  205. in the gospel

  206. of Jesus Christ.

  207. That's our mission

  208. because we are convinced

  209. that that is God's mission.

  210. And the way that we plan

  211. to go about

  212. that grand mission

  213. is with God's power

  214. through God's appointed means.

  215. And so we're not reinventing

  216. the wheel here.

  217. We want to enjoy God

  218. as we gather

  219. and worship Him,

  220. as we worship Him,

  221. as we scatter,

  222. as we worship His families.

  223. We want to enjoy Him.

  224. We want to equip

  225. the saints,

  226. one another,

  227. through discipleship,

  228. through encouragement,

  229. as we build one another

  230. up in love.

  231. And we want to evangelize

  232. the lost

  233. as we take the gospel

  234. from this gathering place

  235. and scatter it out

  236. throughout this community.

  237. And Lord,

  238. what we want to see,

  239. Church,

  240. what we want to see

  241. the Lord do

  242. as we go about this mission,

  243. we want to see lives

  244. transformed by the gospel.

  245. We want to see sin

  246. put to death

  247. in one another's life.

  248. We want to see faith

  249. strengthened in one another.

  250. We want to see God's glory

  251. magnified in us

  252. and in our community.

  253. But Church,

  254. let me be clear.

  255. None of this is possible

  256. apart from the power

  257. of the Holy Spirit.

  258. The Spirit

  259. is God's power

  260. for God's work,

  261. for God's glory.

  262. God's glory.

  263. Everyone

  264. should want this gift.

  265. Amen?

  266. But as we see,

  267. second,

  268. in our passage

  269. this morning,

  270. starting in verse 15,

  271. as we see,

  272. the Holy Spirit

  273. is a particular gift.

  274. The Holy Spirit

  275. is a particular gift.

  276. Meaning,

  277. not everyone

  278. receives the gift

  279. of the Holy Spirit.

  280. not everyone

  281. in the world

  282. has this gift.

  283. It's very possible

  284. that you're here

  285. this morning

  286. listening to this sermon,

  287. listening to this text,

  288. and you do not

  289. have this gift.

  290. So the question

  291. we have to ask is,

  292. well,

  293. how do we know?

  294. How do we know

  295. who it is

  296. that has the Spirit

  297. and who it is

  298. who doesn't?

  299. Well,

  300. look there with me

  301. to verse 15.

  302. Jesus,

  303. He helps us out.

  304. He says,

  305. if you love me,

  306. you will keep

  307. my commandments

  308. and I will ask

  309. the Father

  310. and He will give you

  311. another helper

  312. to be with you forever,

  313. even the Spirit

  314. of truth.

  315. Listen to this.

  316. Whom the world

  317. cannot receive

  318. because it neither

  319. sees Him

  320. nor knows Him.

  321. You know Him

  322. for He dwells with you

  323. and will be in you.

  324. See,

  325. Jesus here,

  326. He makes a distinction

  327. between

  328. His people

  329. who all of them

  330. will have the Spirit

  331. and the rest of the world

  332. who none of them

  333. will have the Spirit.

  334. Very clear distinction here.

  335. Jesus says that

  336. all of His people

  337. know Him,

  338. see Him,

  339. love Him,

  340. obey Him.

  341. Do you see that there

  342. in the text?

  343. All of God's people

  344. know Him,

  345. see Him,

  346. love Him,

  347. and obey Him.

  348. Those are all

  349. spiritual functions.

  350. That's what sets

  351. God's people apart

  352. from the rest of the world.

  353. The rest of the world

  354. does not know God.

  355. The world in general

  356. does not see God.

  357. The world certainly

  358. does not love God.

  359. The world certainly

  360. does not obey God.

  361. So Jesus says

  362. the world cannot receive Him

  363. because it neither

  364. sees Him

  365. nor knows Him.

  366. This is a distinction

  367. that Jesus makes

  368. between those

  369. who are spiritual

  370. and those

  371. who are natural.

  372. Paul tells us

  373. in 1 Corinthians 2,

    1 Corinthians 2:14

  374. verse 14,

  375. he says,

  376. the natural person

  377. does not accept

  378. the things

  379. of the Spirit of God

  380. for they are

  381. folly to Him.

  382. He is not able

  383. to understand them

  384. because they are

  385. spiritually discerned.

  386. It's a bit

  387. paradoxical,

  388. isn't it?

  389. He says

  390. the natural person

  391. cannot accept

  392. the things of the Spirit,

  393. only the spiritual person

  394. can accept

  395. the things of the Spirit.

  396. But how is somebody

  397. made a spiritual person?

  398. It's by the work

  399. of the Spirit.

  400. Apart from the work

  401. of the Holy Spirit,

  402. no one can accept

  403. the things of the Spirit.

  404. But when the Father

  405. sends the Spirit

  406. in power to save,

  407. you know what happens?

  408. The Spirit changes you

  409. from being a natural person

  410. who is naturally blind,

  411. naturally ignorant

  412. to the glory of Christ,

  413. naturally rebellious,

  414. naturally hard-hearted

  415. towards God,

  416. changes you

  417. from a natural person

  418. into something

  419. categorically different.

  420. A new creation.

  421. A spiritual person

  422. who now sees

  423. and knows the Lord.

  424. The Spirit belongs

  425. to those who see

  426. and know the Lord Jesus Christ.

  427. But it goes deeper

  428. than that,

  429. doesn't it?

  430. The Spirit belongs

  431. to those who love

  432. and obey

  433. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  434. Jesus said

  435. in verse 23,

  436. If anyone loves me,

  437. he will keep my word,

  438. and my Father

  439. will love him,

  440. and we will come to him

  441. and make our home

  442. with him.

  443. Whoever does not love me

  444. does not keep my words.

  445. Now we have to be careful

  446. here, don't we?

  447. Because at first glance,

  448. this looks a little bit

  449. like God's love for us

  450. is a response

  451. to our love for him.

  452. Right?

  453. Is that how it reads to you?

  454. He says,

  455. If anyone loves me,

  456. he will keep my word,

  457. and my Father

  458. will love him.

  459. But we know better,

  460. I hope by now,

  461. that we know better.

  462. This isn't an order

  463. of operations.

  464. These are

  465. inseparable truths.

  466. If you love the Lord,

  467. that genuine love

  468. will necessarily

  469. be worked out

  470. in a life of obedience.

  471. Not perfection,

  472. of course not.

  473. Not perfect obedience,

  474. but genuine love

  475. will result,

  476. will bear the fruit

  477. of obedience.

  478. And we can be sure

  479. that any who love the Lord

  480. and serve him

  481. and obey him

  482. truly are loved by God

  483. because if we're going

  484. to talk about

  485. order of operations here,

  486. we love

  487. because he first

  488. loved us.

  489. We were dead

  490. in our trespasses

  491. and sins,

  492. Ephesians 2 tells us.

  493. But God

  494. made us alive

  495. together with Christ.

  496. God demonstrates

  497. his love for us

  498. in this,

  499. that while we were

  500. still sinners,

  501. God,

  502. Christ died for us,

  503. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  504. And Jesus is telling us

  505. that one of the

  506. defining marks

  507. of those who have

  508. the Spirit

  509. of the Lord

  510. in them

  511. is love.

  512. The natural person,

  513. he does not

  514. love the Lord.

  515. He's rebellious,

  516. hard-hearted

  517. towards the things

  518. of God.

  519. One of the primary

  520. works of the Holy Spirit

  521. is to take a heart

  522. that is cold

  523. towards God

  524. and replace it

  525. with a new heart

  526. that now

  527. loves God.

  528. God.

  529. That's the difference

  530. between those

  531. who have this gift

  532. and those

  533. who do not.

  534. Friend,

  535. if you want to know

  536. what category

  537. you're in,

  538. if you want to know

  539. whether or not

  540. you have the Spirit

  541. or whether you

  542. belong to the world,

  543. ask yourself,

  544. honestly,

  545. do I love

  546. the Lord?

  547. Do you

  548. love

  549. God?

  550. Do you

  551. love

  552. the Lord

  553. Jesus Christ?

  554. Do you

  555. love

  556. His Word?

  557. Do you

  558. desire

  559. communion

  560. and fellowship

  561. with Him?

  562. Do you

  563. love the things

  564. that He loves?

  565. Is your life

  566. marked by the things

  567. that He is marked by?

  568. Are you

  569. obeying

  570. His Word?

  571. If so,

  572. praise God,

  573. that's a miracle

  574. of God's Spirit

  575. in you.

  576. This is what we read

  577. this morning

  578. from Ezekiel 36.

  579. I will give you

  580. a new heart

  581. and a new spirit

  582. I will put

  583. within you

  584. and I will remove

  585. the heart of stone

  586. from your flesh

  587. and give you

  588. a heart of flesh

  589. and I will put

  590. my spirit

  591. within you

  592. and I will cause

  593. you to walk

  594. in my statutes

  595. and be careful

  596. to obey

  597. my rules.

  598. If anyone loves

  599. me,

  600. Jesus said,

  601. he will keep

  602. my word.

  603. Church,

  604. you ask the

  605. holiest person

  606. that you know.

  607. Get them in your mind.

  608. God,

  609. ask the holiest

  610. person that you know.

  611. Why do you

  612. read your Bible

  613. so regularly,

  614. so faithfully?

  615. Why do you pray?

  616. Why do you live

  617. the way that you do?

  618. An honest,

  619. good answer

  620. shouldn't be

  621. just compliance.

  622. He said so,

  623. although that's

  624. a valid answer.

  625. The answer ought to be

  626. because I love Him.

  627. Because I love Him.

  628. Because I've seen

  629. His love for me

  630. on the cross.

  631. Because I've seen

  632. His power

  633. in the resurrection.

  634. Because the Spirit

  635. has given me eyes

  636. to see and a heart

  637. to love Him.

  638. That's why I live

  639. the way I do.

  640. The Spirit is a

  641. powerful gift.

  642. He is a

  643. particular gift.

  644. And third,

  645. we see the Holy Spirit.

  646. Church,

  647. He is a personal

  648. gift.

  649. A personal

  650. gift.

  651. gift.

  652. Look at the promise

  653. Jesus makes

  654. to His people.

  655. He promises here

  656. in verses 15 and 16.

  657. He says,

  658. If you love me,

  659. you will keep

  660. my commandments

  661. and I will ask

  662. the Father

  663. and He will give you

  664. another helper

  665. to be with you forever.

  666. Even the Spirit

  667. of truth.

  668. That's an incredible

  669. promise.

  670. But He goes

  671. a step further

  672. than that.

  673. He says,

  674. this Spirit

  675. will not only

  676. be with you

  677. walking alongside you,

  678. He won't only

  679. be with you,

  680. He will be

  681. within you.

  682. He says,

  683. I will not leave

  684. you as orphans.

  685. I will come to you

  686. in that day,

  687. verse 20.

  688. In that day,

  689. you will know

  690. that I am in my Father

  691. and you in me

  692. and I in you.

  693. Now Judas,

  694. John is careful

  695. to say,

  696. not Iscariot.

  697. Judas,

  698. he asked a good question

  699. here in verse 22.

  700. Do you see that?

  701. He said,

  702. Lord,

  703. how is it

  704. that you will

  705. manifest yourself

  706. to us,

  707. your disciples,

  708. and not to the rest

  709. of the world?

  710. Do you still hear

  711. that distinction

  712. that's being made?

  713. How is it

  714. that we will see you,

  715. know you,

  716. love you,

  717. obey you,

  718. and the rest of the world

  719. will not?

  720. He says in verse 23,

  721. if anyone loves me,

  722. verse 23,

  723. he will keep my word

  724. and my Father

  725. will love him

  726. and we will come

  727. to him

  728. and make our home

  729. with him.

  730. This is a promise

  731. of the indwelling

  732. of the Holy Spirit

  733. of God,

  734. not just with you,

  735. alongside you,

  736. church,

  737. but within you.

  738. I hope you realize

  739. that this is the greater

  740. fulfillment of everything

  741. we celebrate

  742. at Christmas time.

  743. We celebrate

  744. at Christmas time

  745. the birth

  746. of Emmanuel,

  747. which means,

  748. what?

  749. God with us.

  750. Galatians tells us

  751. when the fullness

  752. of time had come,

  753. God sent forth

  754. his Son,

  755. born of a woman,

  756. born under the law

  757. to redeem those

  758. who are under the law

  759. so that we might

  760. receive adoption

  761. as sons.

  762. And because you

  763. are sons,

  764. God has sent

  765. the Spirit

  766. of his Son

  767. into your hearts,

  768. crying,

  769. Abba,

  770. Father.

  771. So you are no longer

  772. a slave,

  773. but a son,

  774. and if a son,

  775. then an heir

  776. through God.

  777. What we celebrate

  778. at Christmas

  779. is that God

  780. sent Jesus down

  781. to be born

  782. as a man

  783. so that we

  784. might rise

  785. and be born

  786. of God.

  787. And if we are

  788. born of God,

  789. we can be certain

  790. that we are sons

  791. and heirs

  792. through God.

  793. What a hope

  794. that is.

  795. The Spirit

  796. himself bears

  797. witness with our

  798. spirit that we are

  799. sons of God,

  800. children of God.

  801. And if children,

  802. then heirs,

  803. heirs of God

  804. and fellow heirs

  805. with Christ,

  806. provided we suffer

  807. with him,

  808. that we may also

  809. be glorified

  810. with him.

  811. You see,

  812. the whole story

  813. of the Bible,

  814. from beginning

  815. to end,

  816. from Genesis

  817. to Revelation,

  818. the entire story

  819. of the Bible,

  820. 66 individual books,

  821. is one overarching

  822. story of God

  823. making a way

  824. to be with

  825. his people.

  826. You know,

  827. the book of Genesis

  828. as it begins,

  829. this is what was lost

  830. in the Garden of Eden.

  831. God made Adam

  832. and Eve

  833. a perfect creation,

  834. God with his people,

  835. perfect relationship,

  836. perfect community,

  837. perfect intimacy

  838. with God,

  839. their creator,

  840. and sin entered

  841. into the creation

  842. and caused division.

  843. That's what it continues

  844. to do today.

  845. Our sin is what

  846. separates us

  847. from God.

  848. We cannot dwell

  849. with a holy God

  850. if we are still

  851. guilty in our sin.

  852. That sin issue

  853. must be dealt with.

  854. And so all through

  855. the pages of the Old Testament,

  856. God is putting

  857. systems in place.

  858. He's reaching down

  859. to us

  860. to be with his people.

  861. He's putting systems

  862. of sacrifice

  863. in place

  864. to atone for sin.

  865. He's putting

  866. the tabernacle

  867. in place

  868. so he can dwell

  869. amongst his people.

  870. He puts the temple

  871. in place

  872. so he has a more

  873. permanent dwelling

  874. to be with his people.

  875. But none of it

  876. is lasting.

  877. The sin issue

  878. still remains.

  879. So in the fullness

  880. of time

  881. I'd come.

  882. Jesus Christ

  883. came.

  884. This is what we celebrate

  885. at Christmas

  886. that Christ

  887. came to put

  888. an end

  889. to our sin

  890. once and for all.

  891. So that all

  892. who know him

  893. by faith,

  894. all who love him,

  895. all who see him,

  896. all who obey him

  897. receive the Holy Spirit

  898. and are made new

  899. or adopted

  900. into the family

  901. of God.

  902. As children,

  903. our sin is atoned for.

  904. It is finished

  905. on the cross.

  906. 1 Peter 3.18

  907. says,

  908. Christ also suffered

  909. once for sins,

  910. the righteous

  911. for the unrighteous,

  912. that he might bring

  913. us to God.

  914. So now,

  915. church,

  916. if you have received

  917. the finished work

  918. of Christ

  919. through faith

  920. in what he has done,

  921. we have the certain

  922. hope ahead of us.

  923. At the end of the book

  924. in Revelation,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  925. chapter 21,

  926. which says,

  927. I heard a loud

  928. voice from the throne

  929. saying,

  930. Behold,

  931. the dwelling place

  932. of God

  933. is with man.

  934. He will dwell

  935. with them

  936. and they will be

  937. his people

  938. and God himself

  939. will be with them

  940. as their God.

  941. That's the great hope

  942. that every page

  943. of this book

  944. is leaning towards

  945. that God

  946. would be

  947. with us.

  948. No sin,

  949. no suffering,

  950. no guilt,

  951. no pain,

  952. no loss,

  953. no death,

  954. no grief.

  955. He will wipe away

  956. every tear

  957. from our eyes

  958. at his return.

  959. But church,

  960. the good news

  961. that we celebrate today,

  962. we don't have to wait

  963. till then

  964. to be with the Lord.

  965. Through his spirit,

  966. he has come

  967. to be

  968. within us.

  969. What should that truth

  970. do for us,

  971. church?

  972. If we truly understood

  973. the glorious gift

  974. that Jesus tells us

  975. that his spirit

  976. now lives

  977. within us,

  978. he says,

  979. at least one effect

  980. of that truth,

  981. at least one effect

  982. of that gift,

  983. and this is my prayer

  984. for us this Christmas,

  985. is that we would have

  986. peace.

  987. Fourth,

  988. the Holy Spirit

  989. is a peaceful gift.

  990. Look there,

  991. beginning in verse 25,

  992. he says,

  993. these things

  994. I have spoken to you

  995. while I am still with you,

  996. but the helper,

  997. the Holy Spirit,

  998. whom the Father

  999. will send in my name,

  1000. he will teach you

  1001. all things

1002. and bring to your remembrance

1003. all that I have said to you.

1004. Peace I leave with you.

1005. My peace I give to you.

1006. Not as the world gives

1007. do I give to you.

  1008. Let not your hearts

  1009. be troubled,

1010. neither let them be afraid.

1011. You heard me say to you,

  1012. I am going away

1013. and I will come to you.

  1014. If you loved me,

  1015. you would have rejoiced

  1016. because I am going

  1017. to the Father,

  1018. for the Father

  1019. is greater than I.

1020. And now I have told you

  1021. before it takes place,

1022. so that when it does

  1023. take place,

  1024. you may believe.

  1025. I will no longer

  1026. talk much with you

  1027. for the ruler

1028. of this world is coming.

1029. He has no claim on me,

1030. but I do as my Father

  1031. has commanded me,

  1032. so that the world

  1033. may know

1034. that I love the Father.

  1035. Rise,

1036. let us go from here.

  1037. Church,

  1038. the Holy Spirit

  1039. is a gift

  1040. of peace

  1041. to any

  1042. who receive Him.

  1043. And don't you long

  1044. for peace?

  1045. Everybody

  1046. longs

  1047. for peace.

  1048. peace.

1049. What Jesus tells us here,

  1050. what kind of peace

1051. this is that He gives

  1052. to His people,

  1053. it's peace that is

  1054. rooted in the truth.

  1055. See what He says,

  1056. the Helper,

  1057. the Holy Spirit,

  1058. whom the Father

1059. will send in My name,

  1060. what will He do?

  1061. He will teach you

  1062. all things,

  1063. and He will bring

  1064. to our remembrance

1065. all that I have said

  1066. to you.

  1067. Do you ever wonder

  1068. how this bumbling

  1069. group of disciples

  1070. who can't seem

  1071. to get their head

  1072. on straight

  1073. all through the Gospels,

  1074. all of a sudden

1075. in the book of Acts

  1076. and throughout the rest

  1077. of the New Testament,

  1078. they are filled

  1079. with boldness

  1080. to proclaim

  1081. the Word of Christ.

  1082. Do you ever wonder

  1083. how Peter can go

  1084. from denying the Lord

  1085. three times,

  1086. I don't know him,

  1087. I don't know that man,

  1088. I don't know him,

  1089. you got somebody else,

1090. to now being a pillar

  1091. and a foundational member

  1092. of the early church.

  1093. Well, they witnessed

  1094. the resurrected Jesus

  1095. and they received

  1096. the promised Holy Spirit.

  1097. The Spirit,

  1098. He taught them

  1099. and He reminded them

1100. of the words of Jesus.

  1101. It was the Spirit

1102. through the Word of God

  1103. that comforted them

  1104. and sustained them

  1105. and empowered them

  1106. to endure all sorts

  1107. of horrible afflictions

  1108. and persecutions.

  1109. Their lives were not

  1110. peaceful, church,

1111. but they were at peace.

1112. We share the same Spirit

  1113. with them.

1114. We share the same Word

  1115. with them.

1116. Do we share the same peace

  1117. with them?

1118. The Bible that we hold

  1119. in our hands,

  1120. that we read

  1121. as we gather together,

1122. the Bible that we're preaching

  1123. from this morning

1124. is a product of this promise

  1125. fulfilled.

  1126. The Spirit inspired

1127. the pages of this book

1128. so that He might call

  1129. to mind

  1130. all the things,

1131. all the words of God

1132. as we hide His Word

  1133. in our heart.

1134. One of the primary ways

  1135. that the Spirit

  1136. helps us

  1137. is by illuminating

  1138. the Word of God

  1139. in our hearts

  1140. so that

  1141. when we leave here,

  1142. when we go out

  1143. in the midst

  1144. of the chaos

  1145. of this world,

1146. we are of all people

  1147. at peace

  1148. through His Spirit

  1149. in us.

  1150. True peace

  1151. is found

1152. as the Spirit of God

  1153. teaches us

  1154. the Word of God

1155. so that we believe it

  1156. and live it.

  1157. Friend,

1158. if you want to see

  1159. the Spirit move

  1160. in your life,

1161. open up the Word of God

  1162. and read.

1163. Open up the Word of God

  1164. and pray,

  1165. Lord,

  1166. give me the grace

  1167. to see Your glory

  1168. in these pages.

  1169. Lord,

  1170. give me the grace

  1171. to obey

  1172. where I once rebelled.

  1173. Lord,

  1174. give me the grace

  1175. to love You

1176. where I once hated You.

  1177. If you're seeking peace,

  1178. church,

1179. do it with an open Bible.

  1180. And whatever you do,

  1181. do not seek it

  1182. in the world.

  1183. Jesus says,

1184. Peace I leave with you,

1185. my peace I give to you,

1186. not as the world gives

1187. do I give to you.

  1188. Well,

  1189. you think about

1190. what the world gives you.

  1191. Where can you go

1192. to find peace in the world?

  1193. The world is nothing

  1194. but anxiety

  1195. and stress

  1196. and anger

  1197. and division

  1198. and frustration

  1199. and turmoil.

  1200. Jesus says,

1201. not as the world gives

1202. do I give to you.

  1203. Receive my peace.

  1204. You remember

  1205. the announcement

  1206. of the angels

  1207. that Jesus is coming.

  1208. Glory to God

  1209. in the highest

  1210. and on earth

  1211. peace

  1212. among those

  1213. with whom

  1214. He is pleased.

  1215. Friend,

  1216. are you at peace

  1217. this Christmas season?

  1218. Is your heart

  1219. and your soul

  1220. at rest?

  1221. Honest answers.

  1222. Are you resting

  1223. in the Lord

  1224. or is your heart

  1225. and your life

  1226. marked

  1227. by the chaos

  1228. and frustration

  1229. of the world?

  1230. disciples here

  1231. were likely

  1232. experiencing

  1233. a mix of emotions.

  1234. Jesus is telling them

  1235. the enemy is coming.

1236. The enemy is at hand.

  1237. He's coming.

  1238. I'm leaving.

1239. I'm going to the Father.

  1240. They thought

  1241. they were losing Jesus.

  1242. And yet here

  1243. He is promising them

  1244. this is good.

  1245. This is good.

1246. This is in the Father's hand.

  1247. Be at peace.

  1248. This is okay.

1249. I will not leave you

  1250. as orphans.

  1251. You will have peace.

  1252. I'm certain

  1253. that as much

  1254. as they wanted

  1255. to believe

  1256. what Jesus

  1257. was offering

  1258. them here

  1259. they probably

  1260. were frustrated,

  1261. anxious,

  1262. fearful.

1263. How could this be good?

1264. How can we have peace?

  1265. I'd be willing

  1266. to bet

  1267. that some of you

  1268. find yourself

  1269. in a similar situation

  1270. this Christmas.

  1271. I know that

  1272. for many of us

  1273. the holidays,

  1274. Christmas season

  1275. is a time

  1276. of great joy

  1277. and happiness

  1278. and excitement

  1279. and delight.

  1280. It's an exciting time.

  1281. We celebrate

  1282. the coming of Christ

  1283. but I know

1284. that for many of us

  1285. the holiday season,

  1286. Christmas,

  1287. is a time

  1288. when many of us

  1289. are struggling

  1290. with tremendous grief.

  1291. Tremendous loss.

  1292. As we grieve

1293. the loss of loved ones,

  1294. I look around here

  1295. I see others

  1296. that are missing

  1297. who I know

  1298. are grieving

  1299. the loss

1300. of those that they loved.

  1301. The holidays

  1302. can be a terribly

  1303. painful time

  1304. for many.

  1305. So my encouragement

  1306. to you church

  1307. as we close

  1308. this morning

  1309. lean in

  1310. to the peace

  1311. that we're given

  1312. through the promised

  1313. Holy Spirit.

1314. You will not find it

  1315. in this world

1316. but you will find it

1317. in the Spirit of God

  1318. through the Word

  1319. of Christ.

  1320. Church,

  1321. as we consider

  1322. the miracle of Christ

  1323. coming this Christmas season,

  1324. the miracle of God

  1325. becoming man

  1326. coming to dwell

  1327. among us,

  1328. don't miss the beauty

1329. of an even greater gift

  1330. that God became man

  1331. to dwell within us

  1332. through faith in Christ.

  1333. Let's pray.

  1334. Lord, what a gift.

  1335. What a gift.

  1336. Lord, we pray,

  1337. Father,

  1338. that we would,

  1339. if we have not

  1340. to this point,

  1341. God,

  1342. receive the Holy Spirit

1343. that if there's any here

  1344. who don't know you,

  1345. Father,

  1346. send your Spirit

  1347. forth in power

  1348. now to save.

  1349. And Father,

  1350. we ask that

  1351. as we walk

  1352. through this Christmas season

  1353. and anticipate

  1354. the coming of Christ,

  1355. fill our hearts

  1356. with peace

  1357. through believing

  1358. in the Holy Spirit.

  1359. We love you,

  1360. Lord.

1361. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1362. Amen.
