  1. Well, church, if you would, please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 15. Our passage this morning is John 15, verses 1 through 16.

John 15 chapter mention John 15:1–16

  3. And when you've found that, I ask if you would, if you're able, physically able,

  4. would you stand for the reading of God's Word as I read John 15, verses 1 through 16 this morning?

    John 15:1–16

  5. Jesus says,

  6. I am the vine, you are the branches.

  7. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.

  8. For apart from me, you can do nothing.

  9. If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers.

  10. And the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.

  11. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.

  12. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.

  13. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.

  14. Abide in my love.

  15. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love,

  16. just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.

  17. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

  18. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

  19. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

  20. You are my friends, if you do what I command you.

  21. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing.

  22. But I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

  23. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you,

  24. that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide,

  25. so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

  26. This is God's holy, perfect, inspired word.

  27. Let's bow once more and take a seat as we pray.

  28. Lord, I pray that you would speak through the preaching of your word this morning.

  29. God, give us ears to hear.

  30. And cause us to abide in you, we pray in Christ's name.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. Well, I have had a stressful week this week, thanks to customer service.

  34. I'm sure that many of you have had the same experience with customer service that I have.

  35. It's always frustrating to me that when the internet goes out or the TV goes out,

  36. give it some time, the power might go out this morning, I don't know.

  37. They always ask the same question.

  38. Now, of course, calling customer service is never your first result, right?

  39. You try everything you can in your own power to not call these people.

  40. You try to solve the problem by yourself.

  41. Sometimes you have to put your pride on the side, pick up the phone,

  42. and ask for a little bit of help.

  43. But every time without fail, they always ask the same first question.

  44. Do you know what it is?

  45. Is it plugged in?

  46. Is your device plugged in to a power source?

  47. And I don't know if they've ever had anybody say no yet, but every time they ask,

  48. and I get it, right?

  49. Because if the device is not plugged in to the power source,

  50. it doesn't matter what they do.

  51. It doesn't matter all the troubleshooting that they can go through.

  52. It doesn't matter what you do to fix the problem.

  53. If there is no connection to the source of power,

  54. you're not going to get the device to work.

  55. No connection, no life.

  56. No connection, no power.

  57. Well, in a similar way, I'm afraid, many of us, many Christians,

  58. go through their week, go through their life with very little spiritual power,

  59. very little spiritual life.

  60. And oftentimes we wonder why.

  61. We've come to our gift number three this week.

  62. We've seen that we've been given good gifts of peace,

  63. given good gifts of joy.

  64. We've been given gifts of comfort, gifts of assurance,

  65. given the good gift of the Spirit of God dwelling within us,

  66. His power at work in us.

  67. Every believer has been given these good gifts from God Himself.

  68. But let's be honest,

  69. how many of us actually feel at peace this morning?

  70. How many of us struggle to actually experience the good gifts that we have been given?

  71. Well, this morning, as we look at John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  72. I want us to see the secret to a faithful, fruitful, peaceful, joyful, genuine Christian life.

  73. And the secret, Jesus tells us, is abide in Christ.

  74. Abide in Christ.

  75. As we walk through this chapter this morning, John 15,

  76. we're going to see the picture, the point, and the produce of abiding in Christ this morning.

  77. The picture, the point, and the produce.

  78. First, we see the picture of abiding in Christ.

  79. Jesus, He speaks in a metaphor here in verses 1 through 3.

  80. And I want us to get the picture of what Jesus is describing to His disciples first.

  81. We have to understand the picture that He's giving them before we can apply it to our lives.

  82. We're going to get to that application.

  83. But first, I want us to see the picture here.

  84. Jesus gives us a metaphor.

  85. And He's prone to speaking this way.

  86. We've seen all throughout the Gospel of John.

  87. He's given several I am statements.

  88. You remember these?

  89. He said, I am the bread of life.

  90. I am the shepherd of the sheep.

  91. I am the light of the world.

  92. I am the resurrection and the life.

  93. Each one of these I am statements is declaring to us that He is the I am.

  94. That He is the Lord, God Himself in the flesh.

  95. And each one of these I am statements, it gives us a metaphor, a picture,

  96. to help us understand Him better.

  97. Well, here in John 15, this is the final I am statement in the Gospel of John.

  98. And it's the only one, the only one, that has an additional qualification with it.

  99. Look there at verse 1.

  100. He says, I am the true vine and my Father is the vine dresser.

  101. I am the true vine and my Father is the vine dresser.

  102. What does this mean?

  103. When we hear this, our minds instantly go outside to a garden or to a farm.

  104. It goes to agriculture, to planting.

  105. And that's good.

  106. We'll get there.

  107. But the disciples, when they hear this language, I am the true vine,

  108. their minds instantly go to the Old Testament.

  109. And all of the wealth of references all throughout the Old Testament where Israel is represented as a vine.

  110. And a vineyard is used as a metaphor to describe Israel, the people of God.

  111. And guess what?

  112. It is never good.

  113. It is never pretty.

  114. When the Old Testament describes Israel as a vine, it produces wild, rebellious fruit.

  115. I'll give you one example.

  116. I want you to keep your finger here in John 15, but flip back to Psalm chapter 80.

    Psalms 80 chapter mention

  117. The passage that we read this morning.

  118. If you have your Bible open, flip back to Psalm chapter 80.

    Psalms 80 chapter mention

  119. Because I want you to see this.

  120. This pieces together all the pieces that we need to see to understand what Jesus is saying in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  121. First, we see clearly that Israel is the vine.

  122. Look there if you have your Bibles open to Psalm 80 at verse 8.

  123. It says,

  124. You, God, brought a vine out of Egypt.

  125. You drove out the nations and planted it.

  126. You cleared the ground for it.

  127. It took deep root and it filled the land.

  128. You brought a vine out of Egypt.

  129. Who's the vine?

  130. Who's the vine?

  131. It's Israel.

  132. You brought a vine out of Egypt.

  133. The Lord took Israel out of slavery in Egypt,

  134. planted them like a vine in the new vineyard in the land of Canaan,

  135. and they lived happily ever after, right?

  136. That's what happened?

  137. Wrong!

  138. They rebelled.

  139. They failed.

  140. They disobeyed.

  141. They were idolatrous over and over and over and over again and again and again and again.

  142. This vine produced wild fruit.

  143. So, Psalm 80 verses 12 and 13, we see this brought the judgment of God.

    Psalms 80:12

  144. It says,

  145. You've broken down its walls so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit.

  146. And the boar from the forest ravages it,

  147. and all that move in the field feed on it.

  148. This is a picture of the judgment of God against His people, Israel,

  149. because they bore wild, idolatrous fruit.

  150. This is a problem.

  151. This is the problem that faced the people of God.

  152. God had made promises to Israel.

  153. God promised Israel that they would be His chosen people.

  154. He promised Israel that He would bless them.

  155. He promised Israel He would protect them.

  156. He promised that He would put them in their own land.

  157. He promised them that He would be their God and that they would be His people.

  158. But this big problem called sin keeps getting in the way.

  159. So, look at where the psalm ends.

  160. Psalm 80 verse 14.

    Psalms 80:14

  161. It ends with a prayer.

  162. It says,

  163. Turn again, O God of hosts.

  164. Look down from heaven and see.

  165. Have regard for this vine, the stock that your right hand planted.

  166. And for the Son whom you made strong for yourself.

  167. They have burned it with fire.

  168. They have cut it down.

  169. May they perish at the rebuke of your face.

  170. But, listen to this.

  171. But let your hand be on the man of your right hand.

  172. The Son of Man whom you have made strong for yourself.

  173. Then, we shall not turn back from you.

  174. Give us life and we will call upon your name.

  175. Are you piecing it together here?

  176. This is a prayer for restoration.

  177. We see here that the ultimate hope of Israel is for one individual shoot off of the vine of Israel.

  178. One individual Son of Man to come and restore true worship for the people of God.

  179. That's the hope.

  180. And here, as we get back to John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  181. Here, Jesus says,

  182. I am that one.

  183. I am the vine.

  184. Israel was the vine, but it was a rebellious vine.

  185. I am, Jesus says, I am the true vine.

  186. I am the true Israel.

  187. I am the one who will obey where Israel has rebelled.

  188. I'm the one who will restore true worship for the people of God.

  189. All of the promises made to Israel are fulfilled in and through me.

  190. I am the fulfillment of everything that Israel was supposed to be.

  191. Church, this is good news for us.

  192. I hope you understand.

  193. Because what this means is that anyone who is in the vine can be connected,

  194. can be a part of the people of God.

  195. Anyone who is connected to this true vine can receive,

  196. be the beneficiaries of all of the promises of God in Christ Jesus.

  197. Because Jesus is the true Israel,

  198. all of God's promises come to His people through Him.

  199. So you want to go to the promised land?

  200. Jesus says,

  201. Come to me in my Father's house.

  202. There are many rooms.

  203. You want the presence of God to dwell with you?

  204. Jesus says,

  205. Come to me.

  206. I will ask the Father.

  207. He'll send the Spirit to dwell within you.

  208. You want the protection?

  209. You want the peace of God?

  210. The true shalom of God?

  211. Jesus says,

  212. My peace I give to you.

  213. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

  214. You come to me.

  215. Come to me.

  216. Come to me.

  217. I am the true vine.

  218. The true Israel.

  219. The only way to be included in the people of God

  220. is to be connected to the true vine.

  221. Jesus Christ.

  222. He says,

  223. I am the vine.

  224. The true vine.

  225. And you, believer,

  226. are the branches.

  227. Isn't this what John has been telling us all along?

  228. If we've been paying attention,

  229. isn't this what he's been saying all along?

  230. That no one belongs to the people of God

  231. by virtue of their physical birth alone,

  232. but only by spiritual rebirth

  233. through faith in Jesus Christ.

  234. He told us this all the way back in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  235. It says,

  236. He came to his own,

  237. and his own people did not receive him.

  238. But to all who did receive him,

  239. who believed in his name,

  240. he gave the right to become children of God,

  241. who were born not of blood,

  242. nor of the will of the flesh,

  243. nor of the will of man,

  244. but of God.

  245. Church, we should rejoice in this.

  246. And we should praise God for this.

  247. This means that you, Gentile,

  248. you, anyone in the entire world,

  249. anyone who comes to Christ

  250. is now included to belong to the true vine.

  251. And all of the nourishment,

  252. all of the power,

  253. all of the benefits,

  254. all of the blessing,

  255. all of the promises of God

  256. come to you through Him.

  257. That's the picture.

  258. Now, second,

  259. what's the point?

  260. What's the point?

  261. The point is,

  262. make absolutely certain

  263. that you are connected to that vine.

  264. That's the point.

  265. It's very simple.

  266. Jesus says,

  267. I am the vine.

  268. Make it absolutely certain in your heart

  269. that you are connected to that vine.

  270. Make it the aim of your life

  271. to connect yourself deeply to Jesus Christ.

  272. If all of the gifts of God,

  273. all of the promises of God,

  274. all of the life-giving power of God

  275. comes by virtue of being connected to the vine,

  276. we had better make certain

  277. that we are actually connected.

  278. And not just once,

  279. not just once at the beginning

  280. of your relationship with the Lord,

  281. but every moment of every day.

  282. Are you connected with Christ?

  283. Jesus has a word for that connection.

  284. What is it?

  285. It's abide.

  286. Abide.

  287. Abide in me and I in you.

  288. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself

  289. unless it abides in the vine,

  290. neither can you

  291. unless you abide in me.

  292. I am the vine.

  293. You are the branches.

  294. Whoever abides in me and I in him,

  295. he it is that bears much fruit.

  296. For apart from me,

  297. you can do nothing.

  298. See, church,

  299. there are only two options here

  300. for everyone in the world.

  301. You either belong to the vine,

  302. abide in him,

  303. bear fruit in him,

  304. and so prove to be his disciples.

  305. Or, he says,

  306. you do not belong to the vine,

  307. do not abide in him,

  308. do not bear fruit for him,

  309. and so prove to not be his disciples.

  310. And what happens for these over here?

  311. He says, verse 6,

  312. if anyone does not abide in me,

  313. he is thrown away like a branch and withers.

  314. And the branches are gathered,

  315. thrown into the fire,

  316. and burned.

  317. This is a heavy truth, church.

  318. Jesus says,

  319. this is the work of the vine dresser.

  320. Jesus says,

  321. this is exactly the type of work

  322. what the Father is doing right now.

  323. The Father is the vine dresser.

  324. He says the Father is clearing,

  325. and he is pruning.

  326. It's his work.

  327. Why?

  328. Because he's the vine dresser.

  329. He's the only one who can see

  330. with 100% certainty and clarity

  331. those who are actually abiding in the vine

  332. and those who are not.

  333. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit,

  334. he takes away.

  335. Every branch that does bear fruit,

  336. he prunes that it may bear more fruit.

  337. And Amanda and I went up to the mountains last year,

  338. and we went blueberry picking,

  339. something that we wanted to do while we were up there.

  340. We were out there maybe for an hour

  341. before one of the workers came by,

  342. and he said,

  343. hey, let me show you something.

  344. And he took us,

  345. we followed him to this one bush

  346. that we had walked past probably 50 times that morning.

  347. Now he took us to this one bush,

  348. and he said,

  349. look at this,

  350. this blueberry bush,

  351. it produces pink lemonade blueberries.

  352. Raise your hand if you've ever heard

  353. of pink lemonade blueberries.

  354. I had never heard of pink lemonade blueberries.

  355. But once he showed them to me,

  356. once he pointed them out to me,

  357. I realized,

  358. okay,

  359. these are slightly different color.

  360. They got a little bit of yellow,

  361. maybe a little bit of purplish pink there.

  362. They're a little bit smaller.

  363. And he said,

  364. taste one.

  365. So it had a different taste to it.

  366. I had walked by that bush probably 100 times

  367. without knowing exactly what was going on in that bush,

  368. but he knew.

  369. Why?

  370. Well,

  371. he was the one that planted the bush.

  372. He was the one that cared for the bush.

  373. He was the one that knew exactly what type of fruit

  374. he was looking for it to produce.

  375. He knew what the good fruit was,

  376. what the bad fruit was,

  377. where to point us to go

  378. if he wanted this type of fruit,

  379. that type of fruit.

  380. Well,

  381. Jesus says,

  382. that's exactly what the Father is doing.

  383. The Father is the vine dresser.

  384. He's caring for the vine.

  385. He's clearing out those that do not belong to the vine.

  386. And those that do bear fruit,

  387. He's pruning.

  388. And it might bear more fruit

  389. for His glory.

  390. You know,

  391. this is the Christian experience.

  392. If you're hearing this,

  393. and you're like,

  394. this doesn't really sound like me.

  395. I want us to look here at this passage

  396. because it gives us a full picture

  397. of the entire Christian experience

  398. from beginning to end.

  399. See,

  400. the Christian life,

  401. it begins with God's choosing.

  402. Verse 16.

  403. He says,

  404. You did not choose me,

  405. but I chose you

  406. and appointed you

  407. that you should go and bear fruit.

  408. God's choosing

  409. inevitably leads to cleansing.

  410. Verse 3.

  411. It says,

  412. Already you are clean

  413. because of the word

  414. that I have spoken to you.

  415. That's hearing and believing.

  416. That's when, believer,

  417. when you heard the word of Christ

  418. and you believed it

  419. and you loved it

  420. and you repented of your sin

  421. and you trusted in Christ,

  422. that's the cleansing power

  423. of the word of God.

  424. Faith comes through hearing

  425. and hearing through the word of Christ.

  426. And that initial cleansing

  427. with the word,

  428. it inevitably leads to

  429. ongoing abiding.

  430. Those who are cleansed

  431. with the word

  432. abide in Christ.

  433. Verse 4.

  434. That ongoing abiding

  435. leads to fruit producing.

  436. Verse 5.

  437. That fruit producing

  438. leads to painful pruning.

  439. Verse 2.

  440. And all of it,

  441. from beginning to end,

  442. Jesus says,

  443. all of it is God glorifying.

  444. Verse 8.

  445. By this my Father is glorified,

  446. He says,

  447. that you bear much fruit

  448. and so prove to be

  449. my disciples.

  450. Ask yourself,

  451. as you read this passage,

  452. does that sound like me?

  453. Does that describe my experience?

  454. Where in this paradigm am I?

  455. Am I abiding in Christ?

  456. Have I received the word of Christ

  457. by faith?

  458. Have I been cleansed

  459. by the word of Christ?

  460. Am I bearing fruit

  461. for the glory of God?

  462. Does this sound like me?

  463. See, the point of this metaphor,

  464. the way that we know

  465. whether or not

  466. we belong to the vine

  467. is if we are abiding

  468. in the vine.

  469. And He says,

  470. one way,

  471. one sure way,

  472. we see if we're abiding

  473. in the vine

  474. is if we are bearing fruit.

  475. So the million dollar question

  476. for us then has to be,

  477. what does it mean to abide?

  478. What does it mean to abide?

  479. If Treg was here,

  480. I wish he was here

  481. because I think this is

  482. his most quoted passage.

  483. This is one of his greatest hits.

  484. If he were here

  485. and he were explaining this passage,

  486. I know he would use the word yield.

  487. He would say,

  488. this means that you are

  489. yielded to Christ.

  490. You are yielded to Him

  491. and to His desires for you.

  492. And I think that's a great answer,

  493. but I would ask him,

  494. well, how do you yield to Him, Treg?

  495. And He's not here

  496. to explain Himself.

  497. So we'll look at the passage.

  498. I wonder if you noticed

  499. what I noticed here

  500. as we read this passage.

  501. Jesus,

  502. He changes language around.

  503. He flips the words around here.

  504. He tells His disciples

  505. to abide in Him

  506. in three different ways here.

  507. Did you notice that?

  508. Verses 4 and 5,

  509. He says,

  510. abide in me

  511. and I in you.

  512. But then verse 7,

  513. He says,

  514. abide in me

  515. and my words

  516. in you.

  517. Verse 7.

  518. And then He says,

  519. abide in my love.

  520. Verse 9.

  521. So which is it?

  522. Which is it?

  523. Well, the answer is yes.

  524. And we shouldn't think of these

  525. as three separate things

  526. to put our roots down into

  527. or three separate categories

  528. to abide or to yield ourselves to.

  529. To abide in Christ

  530. is to abide in His Word.

  531. It's His Word that makes us clean.

  532. It's His Word that teaches

  533. and corrects

  534. and reproves

  535. and rebukes

  536. and trains

  537. and encourages

  538. and instructs

  539. and assures us

  540. of God's love for us in Christ.

  541. You cannot abide in Christ

  542. apart from abiding

  543. in His Word.

  544. One way to assess

  545. our abiding in Christ

  546. is by asking ourselves,

  547. are we abiding in His Word?

  548. Do we hunger for His Word?

  549. Do we love His Word?

  550. I'm not saying just have a copy

  551. on your shelf.

  552. Not even just know it intellectually,

  553. but do we possess His Word

  554. in our heart?

  555. Are we feeding on it daily?

  556. Do you love the Word of God?

  557. I know there's nothing special

  558. about a calendar year.

  559. I realize that,

  560. but this year's coming

  561. to a close.

  562. 2024 is upon us.

  563. It's a wonderful time

  564. right now

  565. to begin making a plan.

  566. What is your plan

  567. for abiding

  568. in the Word of Christ

  569. this year?

  570. Do you have a plan?

  571. What's your plan

  572. for abiding

  573. in the Word of Christ?

  574. To abide in Christ

  575. is to abide in His Word.

  576. And, he says,

  577. is to abide in His love.

  578. Abide in His love.

  579. Friend, how often do you meditate

  580. on this one glorious,

  581. simple, beautiful truth

  582. that God loves you?

  583. that God loves you?

  584. How much anxiety

  585. and stress

  586. and turmoil

  587. and anger

  588. would melt away

  589. in our hearts

  590. if we simply meditated

  591. more deeply

  592. on the fact

  593. that God loves you?

  594. God so loved the world

  595. that He gave His only Son

  596. that whoever believes in Him

  597. might not perish

  598. but have eternal life.

  599. the eternal assurance

  600. of the love of God

  601. is seen in the cross of Christ

  602. where He showed His love for us

  603. by laying His life down

  604. for His friends.

  605. Are you preaching the gospel

  606. to yourself, church?

  607. Not just hearing it here

  608. when you come.

  609. I love that you come

  610. and hear the gospel here.

  611. We need this every day.

  612. We need to assure ourselves

  613. of the love of God

  614. for us every day.

  615. Tim Keller,

  616. the famous pastor,

  617. when he was still living with us,

  618. he would say,

  619. the gospel is not just

  620. the ABCs of Christianity.

  621. It's the A to Z.

  622. It's the whole thing.

  623. We never move past

  624. the glorious news

  625. of the gospel

  626. of Jesus Christ.

  627. Church,

  628. isn't this what we celebrate

  629. at Christmas time?

  630. That the love of God

  631. is made manifest to us

  632. in the person

  633. of Jesus Christ

  634. who came to live

  635. and to die

  636. and to rise

  637. in the place of sinners.

  638. For you,

  639. those who deserve it the least,

  640. He showered His love

  641. on you the most.

  642. Abide in His love for you

  643. in the gospel.

  644. You know,

  645. there may be some here

  646. this morning,

  647. I don't presume to know

  648. the spiritual state

  649. of everybody in the room.

  650. There may be some

  651. in the room this morning

  652. that do not truly know

  653. the love of God

  654. in the gospel.

  655. And if that's you,

  656. friend,

  657. what keeps you

  658. from turning to Him now?

  659. What keeps you

  660. from trusting in Christ

  661. right now,

  662. from receiving His promise

  663. that any who come to Him

  664. will have everlasting life?

  665. Abide in Christ.

  666. That's the point

  667. of this lesson.

  668. Now,

  669. last question.

  670. For those who know the Lord,

  671. I want to get very practical

  672. here in our last point.

  673. Very practical.

  674. When you abide,

  675. third,

  676. what is the produce?

  677. Not what does it produce?

  678. We're talking about fruit

  679. this morning.

  680. Okay?

  681. What is the produce?

  682. I'm not a gardener.

  683. Y'all probably

  684. have realized that by now.

  685. So I'm confident

  686. that this illustration

  687. will make no sense

  688. whatsoever

  689. in a real life scenario.

  690. But just humor me

  691. for a moment, okay?

  692. When you become

  693. a Christian,

  694. when you trust

  695. in Jesus Christ alone

  696. for your salvation,

  697. when you receive

  698. the Word,

  699. the promise of Christ,

  700. when you are now

  701. connected truly

  702. to the vine,

  703. what happens

  704. is you become

  705. an entirely new thing.

  706. You are now

  707. a new creation.

  708. It's as if you have been

  709. plucked up

  710. out of the ground

  711. and now you've been

  712. transplanted

  713. into something new.

  714. You've been plucked

  715. out of the soil

  716. where you've had

  717. your roots sunk

  718. down deep

  719. into sin

  720. and into darkness

  721. and to disbelief

  722. and rebellion

  723. to God

  724. and now

  725. you are connected

  726. to a vine

  727. that is completely

  728. rooted in the will

  729. of God.

  730. And in your

  731. new life,

  732. now,

  733. as you're connected

  734. to the vine,

  735. you may see

  736. some fruit

  737. that does not belong.

  738. You may see

  739. some fruit

  740. that looks a lot

  741. like your old self,

  742. fruit of anger,

  743. fruit of jealousy,

  744. fruit of pride,

  745. fruit of lust,

  746. fruit of greed.

  747. You may see

  748. that fruit produced,

  749. but if you are

  750. actually connected

  751. to Him,

  752. guess what?

  753. That is old fruit.

  754. That is not truly

  755. who you are.

  756. That is old fruit

  757. that's coming

  758. from those roots

  759. that have been

  760. sunk down deep

  761. for so long

  762. and you'll begin

  763. to see

  764. and to realize

  765. and to understand

  766. the difference

  767. between the fruit

  768. that comes from Christ

  769. and the fruit

  770. that belongs

  771. to your old nature.

  772. And you'll begin

  773. to join the Lord

  774. in that pruning work

  775. of cutting off

  776. the old fruit

  777. and producing

  778. the new fruit.

  779. It's a lifelong journey

  780. of abiding in Christ

  781. and seeing fruit born

  782. as you're connected

  783. to the vine.

  784. So the question

  785. I want to ask is,

  786. what might that fruit

  787. look like?

  788. What might that fruit

  789. look like?

  790. And we could spend

  791. all day

  792. discussing the many,

  793. many, many results,

  794. glorious fruits

  795. of being connected

  796. to Christ,

  797. but I see six

  798. in this passage.

  799. We're going to work

  800. through them quickly.

  801. Six fruits

  802. of abiding in Christ.

  803. And would you just,

  804. as we walk through this,

  805. would you consider

  806. how you might ask

  807. the Lord

  808. to produce this

  809. in you this year?

  810. Number one,

  811. the one who abides

  812. in Christ

  813. is marked

  814. by a new aim

  815. in life.

  816. The one who abides

  817. in Christ

  818. is marked

  819. by a new aim

  820. in life.

  821. What is the point

  822. of your life?

  823. What is the overarching goal,

  824. the overarching banner

  825. that hangs across

  826. and over every other

  827. decision you make,

  828. every other thing

  829. that you do?

  830. What is the point

  831. of your life?

  832. life,

  833. before you were

  834. in Christ,

  835. it was entirely

  836. driven by self.

  837. Me.

  838. Bring me glory.

  839. Satisfy my desires.

  840. Meet my needs.

  841. If you are in Christ,

  842. you have a new desire,

  843. a new aim,

  844. a new purpose.

  845. What is it?

  846. It's the glory of God.

  847. To magnify

  848. the glory of God

  849. in the gospel

  850. of Jesus Christ.

  851. He says,

  852. by this my Father

  853. is glorified

  854. that you may bear

  855. much fruit.

  856. Second,

  857. the one who abides

  858. in Christ

  859. is marked

  860. by a new dependence

  861. on God's strength.

  862. A new dependence

  863. on God's strength.

  864. If you abide in me

  865. and my word

  866. abides in you,

  867. ask whatever you wish.

  868. You hear that?

  869. Ask whatever you wish

  870. and it will be done

  871. for you.

  872. Ask.

  873. He says in verse 7,

  874. you did not choose me

  875. but I chose you

  876. and appointed you

  877. that you should go

  878. and bear fruit

  879. and that your fruit

  880. should abide

  881. so that

  882. whatever you ask

  883. the Father in my name,

  884. He may give it to you.

  885. I mean,

  886. that seems unthinkable

  887. that we should make

  888. requests of God

  889. and that we can ask God

  890. to act

  891. and to move

  892. and to respond

  893. to our little needs

  894. in our life.

  895. But Jesus says

  896. this prayerful dependence

  897. ought to characterize

  898. the life of one

  899. who is abiding in me.

  900. Do you want power

  901. for the Christian life?

  902. Do you feel like

  903. you don't have that in you?

  904. Ask.

  905. Do you want

  906. the peace of God

  907. to rule over your life?

  908. Just ask.

  909. Do you want to feel

  910. the joy of the Lord

  911. working in and through you?

  912. He says,

  913. come,

  914. come just ask.

  915. Just ask me.

  916. Our dependence on Christ

  917. is never more clear

  918. than when we are

  919. on our knees

  920. in prayer.

  921. It's so simple.

  922. Church,

  923. but how often

  924. is it neglected?

  925. You can bear more fruit

  926. in one hour of prayer

  927. than in a hundred hours

  928. of labor

  929. in your own strength.

  930. Do we actually believe that?

  931. What does our prayer life

  932. say about whether

  933. we believe that?

  934. God,

  935. make us like

  936. Martin Luther,

  937. the great reformer

  938. who famously said,

  939. I have so much

  940. to do today

  941. that I shall spend

  942. the first three hours

  943. of my day in prayer.

  944. Make us abide

  945. in prayerful dependence.

  946. Number three,

  947. the one who abides

  948. is marked by

  949. a new desire

  950. to obey.

  951. A new desire

  952. to obey.

  953. Before you were

  954. in Christ

  955. serving yourself,

  956. serving your own desires,

  957. you didn't desire

  958. to obey the Lord,

  959. but now in Christ

  960. you have this new desire

  961. to obey Him.

  962. Where in the world

  963. did that come from?

  964. He says,

  965. verse 10,

  966. if you keep

  967. my commandments,

  968. you will abide

  969. in my love

  970. just as I have kept

  971. my Father's commandments

  972. and abide

  973. in His love.

  974. And what does that

  975. obedience look like?

  976. Well,

  977. he tells us

  978. it looks like love.

  979. This is my commandment,

  980. that you love

  981. one another

  982. as I have loved you.

  983. Church,

  984. that sounds simple.

  985. That is the highest calling

  986. in the world.

  987. How has Christ loved you?

  988. He gave everything

  989. for you.

  990. He laid His life

  991. down for you.

  992. He suffered

  993. and died

  994. for you.

  995. And now He says,

  996. believer,

  997. you go and do likewise

  998. for one another.

  999. Abide in Him

  1000. and bear the fruit

  1001. of love.

  1002. And when we do,

  1003. when our lives

  1004. are marked

  1005. by this kind

  1006. of self-sacrificial,

  1007. other-centered,

  1008. God-glorifying love,

  1009. we can have,

  1010. number four,

  1011. a new assurance.

  1012. A new assurance.

  1013. The one who

  1014. abides in Christ

  1015. is marked

  1016. by a deep-rooted

  1017. assurance

  1018. that they are

  1019. truly disciples

  1020. of Jesus Christ,

  1021. that they truly

  1022. belong to the vine.

  1023. Verse 8,

  1024. He says,

  1025. By this my Father

  1026. is glorified,

  1027. that you bear

  1028. much fruit

  1029. and so prove

  1030. to be

  1031. my disciples.

  1032. What did He say

  1033. in chapter 13,

  1034. rather?

  1035. What did He say?

  1036. Do you remember?

  1037. By this all people

  1038. will know

  1039. that you are

  1040. my disciples,

  1041. if you what?

  1042. If you have love

  1043. for one another.

  1044. Church,

  1045. our faith

  1046. is invisible.

  1047. We cannot see

  1048. one another's faith.

  1049. The roots of faith

  1050. are invisible,

  1051. but the fruits

  1052. of faith

  1053. are made manifest

  1054. in love

  1055. for one another.

  1056. And when we see

  1057. an outflow

  1058. of love for Christ

  1059. and love for others,

  1060. we should be assured

  1061. that we are

  1062. disciples of Christ.

  1063. And when we look

  1064. at one another

1065. and we see the ways

  1066. that we are growing

  1067. in love for Christ

  1068. and serving

  1069. and loving one another,

  1070. we can encourage

  1071. one another.

  1072. I see the grace

  1073. of God

  1074. at work in you,

  1075. brother.

  1076. I see the love

  1077. of Christ

  1078. coming through you,

  1079. sister.

  1080. Number five,

  1081. the one

  1082. who abides in Christ

  1083. is marked

  1084. by new joy.

  1085. New joy.

  1086. These things

  1087. I have spoken

  1088. to you

  1089. that my joy

  1090. may be in you

  1091. and that your joy

  1092. may be full.

  1093. What could be

  1094. more joyful

  1095. than to know

  1096. that your sins

  1097. are forgiven?

  1098. What could be

  1099. more joyful

  1100. than to know

  1101. that Christ

  1102. himself

  1103. has come

  1104. for you

  1105. to reunite

  1106. you with a God

  1107. that you don't

  1108. deserve the time

  1109. of day with

  1110. but he has loved

  1111. you enough

  1112. to send his son

  1113. to reunite

  1114. himself with you

  1115. through his blood?

  1116. What could be

  1117. more joyful

  1118. than to know

  1119. that you have

  1120. eternal security?

  1121. That you've been

  1122. made children of God?

  1123. We sing

  1124. joy to the world,

  1125. the Lord is come.

  1126. And the angels

  1127. said,

  1128. do not fear,

1129. I bring you good news

  1130. of great joy

  1131. for all the peoples.

  1132. The one who abides

  1133. in Christ

  1134. ought to be marked

  1135. by unshakable,

  1136. supernatural,

  1137. palpable joy.

  1138. Does this describe you?

  1139. Does your heart

  1140. rejoice in the Lord?

  1141. If you want real,

  1142. lasting joy,

  1143. abide more deeply

  1144. in Christ.

  1145. And lastly,

  1146. number six,

  1147. the one who abides

  1148. is marked by

  1149. new fellowship.

  1150. new fellowship,

  1151. friendship

  1152. with God

  1153. himself.

  1154. Jesus assures

  1155. his disciples

  1156. here in verse 13.

  1157. He laid his life

  1158. down as an act

  1159. of love

  1160. for his friends.

  1161. He says,

  1162. you are my friends

  1163. if you do

  1164. what I command you.

  1165. No longer

  1166. do I call you

  1167. servants,

  1168. for the servant

  1169. does not know

  1170. what his master

  1171. is doing.

  1172. but I have

  1173. called you

  1174. friends

  1175. for all that

  1176. I have heard

  1177. from my Father

  1178. I have made

  1179. known to you.

  1180. Church,

  1181. it is one thing

  1182. to serve

  1183. the Lord.

  1184. It is another thing

  1185. entirely to be called

  1186. his friend.

  1187. And Jesus says,

  1188. I have come

  1189. to befriend

  1190. sinners.

  1191. To abide

  1192. in Christ

  1193. is to know

  1194. the Lord

  1195. Jesus

  1196. not just as

  1197. master

  1198. but as friend.

  1199. To abide

  1200. in him

  1201. is to speak

  1202. to him,

  1203. to listen

  1204. to him,

  1205. to follow

  1206. him,

  1207. to long

  1208. for relationship

  1209. with him

  1210. as your deepest

  1211. and truest

  1212. friend

  1213. who loves

  1214. you

  1215. and has

  1216. given himself

  1217. for you.

  1218. Church,

  1219. if you feel

  1220. yourself

  1221. feeling

  1222. spiritually dry

  1223. this Christmas,

  1224. if you are

  1225. struggling to

  1226. find peace,

  1227. if you are

  1228. strung out

  1229. and too

  1230. busy,

  1231. if you are

  1232. stressed,

  1233. if you are

  1234. not seeing

  1235. the growth

  1236. that you

  1237. hope to

  1238. see in

  1239. the Lord,

  1240. start

  1241. right

  1242. here.

  1243. Make

  1244. sure

  1245. that you

  1246. are

  1247. connected

  1248. to the

  1249. vine.

  1250. Jesus

  1251. invites

  1252. you to

  1253. come

  1254. to lay

  1255. aside

  1256. the burden

  1257. of

  1258. productivity,

  1259. lay

  1260. aside

  1261. the stress

  1262. of your

  1263. busyness,

  1264. lay aside

  1265. the pressure

  1266. of doing

  1267. everything

  1268. in your

  1269. own strength

  1270. to come

  1271. to me

  1272. and abide

  1273. in me.

  1274. Come

  1275. to me,

  1276. all who

  1277. are weary

  1278. and heavy

  1279. laden,

  1280. and I

  1281. will give

  1282. you rest.

  1283. Let's

  1284. pray.

  1285. Lord,

  1286. Jesus,

  1287. what a

  1288. promise.

  1289. Again,

  1290. we confess

  1291. how easy

  1292. it is for

  1293. us to

  1294. wonder

  1295. from the

  1296. source of

  1297. joy and

  1298. source of

  1299. power,

  1300. source of

  1301. strength,

  1302. from your

  1303. very presence,

  1304. but Lord,

  1305. we pray

  1306. now,

  1307. would you

  1308. correct us

  1309. in our

  1310. hearts

  1311. and draw

  1312. us more

  1313. deeply

  1314. into communion

  1315. with you.

  1316. we thank

  1317. you,

  1318. Father,

  1319. that you

  1320. sent

  1321. Christ.

  1322. The sinners

  1323. like us

  1324. might even

  1325. know you,

  1326. might even

  1327. call you

  1328. our friend.

  1329. We thank

  1330. you for

  1331. your love

  1332. for us

  1333. in the

  1334. gospel of

  1335. Jesus Christ.

  1336. We pray

  1337. this in

  1338. Jesus'

  1339. name.

  1340. Amen.
