  1. Amen. If you would, take your Bibles and open them up to the book of Psalms this morning.

  2. The book of Psalms, and our passage will be Psalm 37, verse 4.

    Psalms 37:4

  3. I ask that if you would please remain standing, if you're able, for the reading of God's Word.

  4. Just one verse this morning, Psalm 37, verse 4.

    Psalms 37:4

  5. If you were here last week, you know we're taking a break from the Gospel of John for the month of January.

  6. And our aim in this month, the month of January, is to remind ourselves, as we begin a new year, of our mission and vision as a church.

  7. So last week, we covered our mission, which is that we exist to magnify the glory of God in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  8. And starting this week and over the next three weeks, Lord willing, we'll cover our three-part ministry vision,

  9. which is to enjoy God, to equip the saints, and to evangelize the lost.

  10. But what I've felt compelled to do over these three weeks is to blanket those three aspects of our ministry together with a theme of prayer.

  11. So this week, we're going to cover how we enjoy God together in prayer.

  12. So let's read Psalm 37, verse 4.

    Psalms 37:4

  13. Remain standing and listen along as I read God's Word.

  14. It says,

  15. Let's pray once more.

  16. Lord, we ask that you would turn our hearts now to delight in you.

  17. We ask God that you would change the desires of our hearts and then give us the desires of our hearts.

  18. And we ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ.

  19. Amen.

  20. You may be seated.

  21. If my math is correct, we've prayed a total of four times together already in our worship service this morning.

  22. We prayed at the beginning of our service, after the call to worship.

  23. And we prayed a prayer of praise after the catechism reading.

  24. We had a prayer for our offering right after the scripture reading this morning.

  25. And then I just prayed for the preaching of the Word.

  26. That makes for four times together.

  27. And of course, if you were in the Sunday school hour, that hour both begins and ends with prayer.

  28. And I don't know if you even know this or not, but if you were here 15 minutes before the Sunday school hour,

  29. we have 15 minutes before the Sunday school hour every Sunday morning.

  30. We walk through the morning service and we pray through the morning service and commit all of our plans to the Lord.

  31. And then guess what?

  32. Well, we're not done praying this morning.

  33. As you might imagine, after I'm done saying everything I have planned to say, I will pray.

  34. And then we will conclude with a time of silent prayer and reflection.

  35. And then I've asked Treg if he would lead us in prayer as a way to apply and respond to what God has taught us this morning through His Word.

  36. I hope that you can tell, if you've been a part of our worship services for any length of time,

  37. that for us, prayer is not just an accessory to our worship.

  38. It is absolutely a vital element of our life together.

  39. It is a vital part of our church family and what we aim to do together.

  40. I'll never forget when I was serving at a church in North Myrtle Beach.

  41. I served as a pastor on staff at a church there.

  42. And we also placed a high premium on the value of prayer.

  43. And we had some family in town visiting us for the weekend.

  44. Amanda's sister and our nephews.

  45. And after the service was over, I do as I always do.

  46. I go around and I say, hey, would anybody like to share anything that they picked up, anything they heard from the morning's service?

  47. And my nephew was probably seven or eight years old at the time.

  48. And he said, I don't really know.

  49. All I know is you guys sure do pray a whole lot.

  50. I took that as a compliment.

  51. You see, we as a church family are committed, deeply committed, to the value of prayer.

  52. Not just as a transition to move us along through various elements of the service.

  53. Not just so musicians or readers can get up and off the stage.

  54. But we believe that prayer is one of the primary ways that we both experience and express delight in God.

  55. Prayer is one of the primary ways that we as Christians and we as a church both experience and express delight in God.

  56. We believe that we magnify the glory of God by enjoying Him in prayer.

  57. Our passage this morning is just one verse.

  58. But it is a wonderful promise for us to believe.

  59. It is, I believe, it's fuel for us for a lifetime, a commitment of God-exalting prayer.

  60. And if you come here this morning and you feel like your prayer life is struggling,

  61. maybe it's grown a bit dull,

  62. maybe for you it's a struggle to force yourself into the discipline of prayer,

  63. I want you to listen closely to what God has promised you this morning.

  64. This promise is for you.

  65. So what I want to do this morning as we walk through just one verse, Psalm 37 verse 4,

    Psalms 37:4

  66. is I want to discuss what this promise isn't and what this promise is.

  67. What this promise isn't and what this promise is.

  68. First, let's consider what this promise isn't saying.

  69. Because if God is promising us something,

  70. I want to understand what God means by what God promises, right?

  71. I don't want to import my desires, my wants, my agenda, my selfish motives onto God's promises

  72. because a hundred times out of a hundred, what God has in mind is going to be better than what I had in mind.

  73. So let's understand what he's not saying here in Psalm 37 verse 4.

    Psalms 37:4

  74. This is not a procedure to get whatever you want.

  75. This is not a procedure to get whatever you want.

  76. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you whatever you want.

  77. Maybe my heart might want a Ferrari.

  78. And maybe my heart wants a spouse, children, grandchildren, a job, a new home.

  79. And maybe my heart wants a million dollars.

  80. You see where I'm going.

  81. And so you're telling me that all I have to do is delight in God and I will get whatever I want, right?

  82. Yes and no.

  83. Yes and no.

  84. And we'll see how it's yes in a moment.

  85. But for now, we should know that this promise is not a blank check to just get whatever we want out of God.

  86. There's a movie that I loved growing up.

  87. It's called Blank Check.

  88. I won't ask you to raise your hand if any of you have seen it.

  89. It wasn't probably a nominee for any major awards or anything like that.

  90. But it was a good movie.

  91. A kid, he finds, guess what?

  92. A blank check.

  93. And he writes a dollar amount.

  94. I don't remember how much the amount was.

  95. Probably a million dollars onto the blank check.

  96. He goes.

  97. He cashes it.

  98. He turns that blank check into anything and everything a kid could possibly ever want.

  99. He had water slides coming out of his bedroom.

  100. He had candy.

  101. He had all sorts of junk food as much as he wanted.

  102. He had go-karts to ride around his house.

  103. He got everything he wanted because he was given a blank check.

  104. That would be the wrong way to read this verse.

  105. That's not what he is promising us here.

  106. Prayer is not just a means to some other better end.

  107. Where we treat God as if he's a magic genie in a bottle.

  108. If we just rub the bottle the right way.

  109. If we just delight in the Lord enough just the right way.

  110. Then we will get whatever it is that we wish.

  111. We should know that if that's how we treat prayer.

  112. If we read this promise this way.

  113. Ultimately what that's saying is that whatever it is that we want.

  114. We want more than God himself.

  115. And God's value.

  116. God's worth to us.

  117. It lies in his ability to give us whatever it is that we want with or without him.

  118. That's not what this is.

  119. It's not a procedure to get whatever we want.

  120. It's also not a prosperity gospel promise.

  121. It is not a prosperity gospel promise.

  122. You know what the prosperity gospel is.

  123. The essence of the prosperity gospel is love God and bad things will not happen to you.

  124. Love God and bad things won't come into your life.

  125. God wants you to be happy.

  126. God wants you to be healthy.

  127. God wants you to be wealthy.

  128. He would never bring something bad or hard into your life.

  129. And so if you just have enough faith nothing bad will ever happen to you.

  130. It is a dangerous deception.

  131. And it's incredibly popular.

  132. And you can imagine why.

  133. This lie sells.

  134. It is attractive.

  135. Apparently I read this week.

  136. This is Oprah Winfrey's favorite verse in the Bible.

  137. Did you know that?

  138. This is her favorite verse.

  139. In the Bible.

  140. She was in an interview with Stephen Colbert several years ago.

  141. She shared that this was her favorite verse.

  142. But as she explained it, it became abundantly clear that how she understands this promise is radically different from what I'm trying to present to you this morning.

  143. As she articulated it, this is a direct quote.

  144. She said, I love this verse because it means if you focus on being a force for good, then good will come back to you.

  145. If you focus on being a force for good, then good will come.

  146. I spoke with a man several months ago who thought the same thing.

  147. I gave him a ride into town.

  148. We had about 10 minutes to speak.

  149. And so we spoke about the gospel.

  150. And he shared that, well, what he believes is essentially that if you just put out good energy into the world, well, good things will come back to you.

  151. If you put out bad energy out into the world, well, bad things will come back to you.

  152. I want you to see that's not what the verse says, is it?

  153. Look there with me again.

  154. This verse doesn't say be good, be a force for good, do your best, try hard and good will come to you.

  155. What does it say?

  156. Delight yourself in the Lord.

  157. Delight yourself in the Lord, not just in any old God, not just in good, however you might define good.

  158. Delight yourself in the Lord, Yahweh, the God of the Bible, the covenant God of Israel, the God that's revealed in the pages of Scripture.

  159. Delight yourself in him and he will give you the desires of your heart.

  160. And it doesn't say, no matter how much we might want it to say this, it doesn't say that if you delight in him, no bad things will ever come into your life.

  161. It does not say, delight in him and he will only give you good things in your life.

  162. Try telling that to Job.

  163. Try telling that to Jesus.

  164. Or to Paul or to Stephen or Peter or James.

  165. Or to our brothers and sisters suffering for their faith in Sudan.

  166. Try telling that to those worshiping in underground churches in China.

  167. I try telling that to my pastor friend, Jeff, in North Myrtle Beach, one of the godliest men I know,

  168. who spent the majority of his working career life doing mission work, building the church in Israel and in the Horn of Africa.

  169. He came home, served as an elder alongside me at our church.

  170. Just learned last week that he has cancer.

  171. Stage four.

  172. Terrible diagnosis for a godly man.

  173. Tell that to my friend Garrett.

  174. Who prayed with his family.

  175. That his family would grow in the Lord.

  176. That they would grow in their hunger for the Lord.

  177. That they'd be drawn nearer to the Lord.

  178. And then weeks later, he finds himself in the ICU with his daughter.

  179. Seizures.

  180. Unresponsive.

  181. Been there since just before Christmas.

  182. Love God and good things will happen.

  183. Love God and good things will happen.

  184. Does not work in real life.

  185. Love God and bad things won't happen to you.

  186. Does not work in real life.

  187. That's not what this verse is promising.

  188. So if this verse is true, what that means is there must be a way where we get what we want, even if we don't get what we want.

  189. Are you following me?

  190. There must be a way where the desires of our heart are met, even if the wants, the immediate wants of our heart don't go as we plan.

  191. Where we're happy, we're delighted and satisfied, even if our life isn't delightful and isn't always satisfying.

  192. We'll get there.

  193. Last one here.

  194. We should also know that this verse is not possible in our own strength.

  195. This verse is not possible in our own strength.

  196. I want you to notice something here.

  197. It's so interesting to me.

  198. That this is a command.

  199. You notice that?

  200. We tend to place the emphasis on the back end of the verse as if the back end was more important.

  201. So we say, well, how do I get the desires of my heart?

  202. Okay, well, I delight myself in the Lord.

  203. Well, how do I get whatever it is that I want?

  204. Well, I delight in Him.

  205. If I want to be happy, if I want to be wealthy, if I want to be happy and healthy, I delight in Him.

  206. We get the order mixed up.

  207. Read it again.

  208. This is a command.

  209. He tells us, He commands us.

  210. It says, delight yourself in the Lord.

  211. And out of that delight, out of that delight as an overflow, as a sure result of a heart that delights in Him,

  212. is a promise that all of your desires will ultimately be met in Him.

  213. And we're commanded to delight ourselves in the Lord.

  214. It's not the only place in Scripture where we're commanded like this either, is it?

  215. Or the summary that Jesus gives of the whole law.

  216. What is it?

  217. You should, you should, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul, with all your strength.

  218. We're commanded to love God.

  219. That's the call that's made to sinners like us.

  220. Love God.

  221. Love Christ.

  222. Love His Word.

  223. Love His promises.

  224. And you will be saved.

  225. What's the problem?

  226. We can't do that in our own strength.

  227. We can't obey this command in our own strength.

  228. I can't make you love anything just by telling you to love it.

  229. Especially, especially if you're naturally opposed to it.

  230. You can force action, but you cannot force love.

  231. Especially if you're naturally opposed to it.

  232. I'll give you an example.

  233. If I tell my kids to eat broccoli, they might eat it.

  234. If I tell them to love broccoli, I can't make them love broccoli no matter how many times I might tell them.

  235. They'll eat it.

  236. I can force action, but I can't force love.

  237. If you're not an exercise person, it doesn't matter how many times Breeze tells you to lift the weight.

  238. He might get you to lift it, but he can't make you love it.

  239. You can compel action, but you cannot force love.

  240. So how in the world is this command possibly kept?

  241. How can sinners who are naturally opposed to God,

  242. sinners who refuse to delight in the goodness of God,

  243. how can sinners obey this command to delight in the Lord?

  244. It's only kept by a miraculous work of God himself in you.

  245. To change your heart.

  246. To change your heart.

  247. So that now your cold, hard, rebellious heart that doesn't want a thing to do with God,

  248. only wants what you can get out of him,

  249. treats him as a means to some other end,

  250. uses him to serve yourself,

  251. sees him as an accessory to your life and not central to your life,

  252. now all of a sudden your heart is changed to love him.

  253. To desire him.

  254. And so what way he wants to trust him,

  255. even if we don't get our way.

  256. That's a work, a miracle of God.

  257. The only way to have all of the desires of your heart

  258. is for God himself to make himself the delight of your heart.

  259. And then to give you as much as you want.

  260. I'll say that again.

  261. The only way for you to have all of the desires of your heart

  262. is for God to make himself the delight of your heart.

  263. And then he says,

  264. Come on, you can have as much as you want.

  265. You can have as much as you want of me.

  266. It happens first at conversion.

  267. When you hear the good news of the gospel

  268. that Christ Jesus comes to save sinners,

  269. that he alone is worthy of our praise,

  270. that he's lived and died and risen on behalf of sinners,

  271. to restore you to God,

  272. to bring you back into right relationship with God,

  273. to wipe away everything that stands in the way

  274. of your full enjoyment of God himself.

  275. When you believe that message,

  276. your heart is changed and transformed

  277. to glory and the goodness of God above all things.

  278. It happens first at conversion.

  279. But even then, after conversion,

  280. your heart, believe it or not,

  281. is often still slow to delight in God.

  282. I know I'm not the only one.

  283. Your whole life as a Christian

  284. is now spent fighting for joy in the Lord.

  285. Fighting for delight in God.

  286. God works that delight in you

  287. through sanctification

  288. sanctification until you're finally made fit

  289. and able to enjoy him forever

  290. in glorification.

  291. That's the aim of the Christian life.

  292. It's to enjoy him,

  293. to delight in him,

  294. to love him.

  295. That's his work

  296. and that's his promise to us in Christ.

  297. Delight in God is the work of God.

  298. We can't do it in our own strength,

  299. but he works it in us through the gospel.

  300. So, what is this verse promising us?

  301. What is this verse promising us?

  302. Well, this verse, church,

  303. I want us to see,

  304. this is an invitation to have your desires changed.

  305. It's an invitation to have your desires changed.

  306. Matthew Henry, commenting on this verse,

  307. he says,

  308. we must make God our heart's delight

  309. and then we shall have our heart's desire.

  310. Must make God our heart's delight

  311. and then we will have our heart's desire.

  312. What is the desire of the heart of a good man,

  313. he asks?

  314. It is this,

  315. to know and love

  316. and live to God,

  317. to please him

  318. and to be pleased in him.

  319. And St. Augustine,

  320. he says it another way,

  321. much simpler.

  322. He says,

  323. love God and do as you please.

  324. Don't you love that?

  325. Isn't that freeing?

  326. Love God and do as you please.

  327. See, we misunderstand that quote

  328. if we put the emphasis on the latter half.

  329. Oh, I get to do whatever I want

  330. and do whatever I please.

  331. That's all that's required of me,

  332. love God,

  333. then I get to do whatever I want.

  334. Yes, if everything you want

  335. is developed and defined

  336. by your love for God.

  337. You can do whatever it is you want.

  338. If it's flowing downstream

  339. from a heart that loves God,

  340. love God and do what you please.

  341. Because the truth is,

  342. genuinely loving God,

  343. delighting yourself in him

  344. will have a transformative effect

  345. on your heart.

  346. If you delight in him,

  347. if you love him,

  348. your heart will change

  349. away from selfish desires,

  350. away from sinful desires,

  351. away even from good desires

  352. for selfish purposes

  353. and towards God

  354. and God's desires.

  355. The one who truly delights in God

  356. deep down in their heart of hearts

  357. doesn't want anything

  358. other than what God wants.

  359. Now we might have other wants.

  360. Of course we will.

  361. We will have other wants,

  362. but if our greatest want

  363. is for God to be glorified,

  364. for his will to be done,

  365. for us to know him more,

  366. for us to grow in him,

  367. we can be certain

  368. we'll have it.

  369. Come what may.

  370. Whatever that may bring,

  371. you can take anything else

  372. away from a Christian,

  373. but if they have God,

  374. they have everything they need.

  375. We can say with the Apostle Paul,

  376. I've learned the secret

  377. of being content

  378. in all circumstances.

  379. Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  380. I've learned the secret

  381. to being content,

  382. to thriving in abundance

  383. and in lack and poverty

  384. and in riches.

  385. The secret, what is it?

  386. I can do all things

  387. through Christ

  388. who strengthens me.

  389. Have you learned that secret?

  390. Have you learned the secret

  391. of contentment?

  392. Come what may,

  393. in abundance and in plenty,

  394. in lack and in hunger and thirst.

  395. Are you content

  396. in who God is?

  397. Is your heart delighted

  398. in him?

  399. That's the work

  400. of a changed heart

  401. by the power of God

  402. through the gospel of Christ.

  403. It's an invitation

  404. to have your desires changed.

  405. Not only this,

  406. it's an invitation

  407. to have our longings met.

  408. You know,

  409. another way to misunderstand

  410. and misapply this verse

  411. is to say,

  412. well, this just means

  413. I should just squelch

  414. all my desires.

  415. This just means

  416. that I should live

  417. like a stoic

  418. and have no pleasure,

  419. no joy,

  420. not want anything.

  421. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  422. It's good.

  423. It's right for us

  424. to have desire.

  425. I would say it's good

  426. and it's right for us

  427. to chase pleasure,

  428. to chase joy.

  429. It's a matter of

  430. where we chase it

  431. and where we find it.

  432. The only way

  433. this promise is true

  434. is for us to shrink,

  435. is not for us,

  436. excuse me,

  437. not for us to shrink

  438. our desires

  439. but instead

  440. to enlarge them.

  441. God wants our desires

  442. to be for things

  443. that are more

  444. than what this world

  445. can provide,

  446. not less

  447. than what this world

  448. can offer.

  449. We read from C.S. Lewis

  450. last week,

  451. I'll do it again.

  452. He says,

  453. Our desires

  454. are not too strong

  455. but too weak.

  456. We are half-hearted creatures

  457. fooling about

  458. with drink

  459. and sex

  460. and ambition

  461. when infinite joy

  462. is offered to us.

  463. Like an ignorant child

  464. who wants to go on

  465. making mud pies

  466. in a slum

  467. because he cannot

  468. even imagine

  469. what's meant

  470. by the offer

  471. of a holiday at sea.

  472. We are far

  473. too easily

  474. pleased.

  475. Do you desire

  476. to be happy?

  477. Of course you do.

  478. Well, you can

  479. chase that happiness,

  480. you can pursue

  481. that joy

  482. and drink

  483. and sex

  484. and ambition

  485. or

  486. you can pursue

  487. happiness in Christ.

  488. We are offered

  489. infinite joy

  490. in Christ,

  491. joy that we can

  492. experience

  493. right now

  494. in part

  495. but then

  496. in full.

  497. Do you desire

  498. to be rich?

  499. Wealthy?

  500. Have some property

  501. maybe?

  502. Have a home?

  503. A little bit

  504. of equity?

  505. Your own little slice

  506. of paradise

  507. here on earth?

  508. That's too small.

  509. Don't you understand

  510. we will inherit

  511. the new heavens

  512. and the new earth?

  513. We're sons and daughters

  514. of the king.

  515. We'll be citizens

  516. of the kingdom of God.

  517. Do you desire

  518. to be healthy?

  519. Of course you do.

  520. Friend,

  521. the time is coming

  522. when all sickness

  523. will be wiped away

  524. for good.

  525. When all death

  526. will be wiped away

  527. forever.

  528. No more sorrow,

  529. no more suffering,

  530. no more disease.

  531. I think this is

  532. an encouragement

  533. for us to put

  534. our hope there

  535. in better promises.

  536. You know,

  537. where the prosperity

  538. gospel goes wrong,

  539. you might be surprised

  540. to hear this,

  541. it is not in saying

  542. that God wants

  543. your healing.

  544. They're not wrong

  545. in saying that God

  546. wants your prosperity

  547. or your happiness

  548. or your health.

  549. You may be surprised

  550. to hear that.

  551. Prosperity theology

  552. goes wrong

  553. by shrinking

  554. God's promises

  555. down to a fraction

  556. so that they can be

  557. had right now.

  558. It makes our desires

  559. not too big

  560. but too small.

  561. Ten billion dollars

  562. in your bank account

  563. is a fraction

  564. of the riches

  565. that await us

  566. in glory.

  567. An inheritance

  568. for promise

  569. that is imperishable,

  570. undefiled,

  571. unfading,

  572. kept in heaven

  573. for you

  574. who by God's power

  575. are being guarded

  576. through faith

  577. for salvation

  578. ready to be revealed

  579. in the last time.

  580. Even though

  581. if necessary,

  582. you now have

  583. had to endure

  584. various trials

  585. so that the test

  586. to genuineness

  587. of your faith

  588. more precious

  589. than gold

  590. those refined by fire

  591. may be found

  592. to result

  593. in praise

  594. and glory

  595. and honor

  596. of the revelation

  597. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  598. Do you want

  599. health

  600. and happiness?

  601. A hundred years

  602. of life cancer free

  603. on this side

  604. of eternity?

  605. That's a good run.

  606. That is a fraction

  607. of what lies

  608. ahead of us

  609. in glory.

  610. I used to have

  611. a church member

  612. I think I've shared

  613. this with you before

  614. who as he aged

  615. and got older

  616. his knees were aching

  617. his back was aching

  618. everything was aching

  619. y'all know how that is

  620. and he would tell me

  621. you know pastor

  622. I just want one good day

  623. before Jesus comes back.

  624. Just one good day

  625. where I'll feel good

  626. before the Lord returns.

  627. And I loved

  628. to remind him

  629. brother when Jesus

  630. comes back

  631. you will feel better

  632. than you've ever felt.

  633. More alive

  634. than you've ever felt.

  635. More limber

  636. than you've ever felt.

  637. There's better promises

  638. ahead of us

  639. than what anything

  640. in this world

  641. can offer you.

  642. This is an invitation

  643. to have your desires

  644. changed

  645. and to have your desires

  646. met

  647. in ways that

  648. far surpass

  649. our greatest expectations.

  650. Ultimately church

  651. this is an invitation

  652. to true

  653. and lasting

  654. joy.

  655. don't you want that?

  656. And don't you

  657. crave that?

  658. Everybody does.

  659. Delight yourself

  660. in the Lord

  661. and he will give you

  662. the desires

  663. of your heart.

  664. You know that's what

  665. the message of the gospel

  666. is all about.

  667. The gospel

  668. is an invitation

  669. for sinners

  670. to know

  671. true

  672. and lasting

  673. joy in God

  674. through faith

  675. in Jesus Christ.

  676. Christ.

  677. That's why

  678. Christ came.

  679. Christianity

  680. is not

  681. a religion

  682. of do's

  683. and don'ts.

  684. It's not a binding

  685. restrictive religion

  686. of rules

  687. to follow.

  688. Christianity

  689. is an invitation

  690. to endless

  691. infinite

  692. joy

  693. and the

  694. fount

  695. of endless

  696. joy.

  697. God himself

  698. John Piper

  699. has been

  700. one of the

  701. greatest advocates

  702. for something

  703. called

  704. Christian hedonism.

  705. Anybody ever

  706. heard of that?

  707. Christian hedonism.

  708. A hedonism

  709. you don't want

  710. to be called

  711. a hedonist.

  712. Right?

  713. A hedonism

  714. is if you're

  715. a hedonist

  716. you're somebody

  717. that pursues

  718. pleasure

  719. any which way

  720. you can find it.

  721. A hedonism

  722. is the pursuit

  723. of pleasure.

  724. A pleasure seeker

  725. is a hedonist

  726. but Christian hedonism

  727. narrows it

  728. to say

  729. God wants you

  730. to be happy

  731. and the only way

  732. you will truly

  733. be happy

  734. is in God.

  735. God wants you

  736. to be satisfied

  737. and the only way

  738. you will ever

  739. truly be satisfied

  740. is in God

  741. himself.

  742. God wants you

  743. to chase

  744. hard after

  745. all the joy

  746. and pleasure

  747. that your heart

  748. can possibly

  749. imagine

  750. and the only way

  751. to have fullness

  752. of joy

  753. is in God

  754. himself.

  755. See most people

  756. if they think

  757. about God

  758. at all

  759. they go through

  760. life as if

  761. this verse said

  762. delight yourself

  763. and he'll give you

  764. the desires

  765. of your heart.

  766. Do whatever

  767. you want

  768. delight yourself

  769. if there is a God

  770. he wants you

  771. to be happy

  772. he'll bless you

  773. he approves of you

  774. you deserve

  775. whatever your heart

  776. desires.

  777. You see how

  778. false that is?

  779. Delight yourself

  780. in the Lord

  781. the source

  782. of infinite

  783. eternal joy

  784. delight yourself

  785. in him

  786. and you will have

  787. all the desires

  788. of your heart.

  789. Westminster

  790. catechism

  791. it tells us

  792. what's the

  793. chief end

  794. of man

  795. is to glorify

  796. God

  797. and to enjoy

  798. him

  799. forever.

  800. Psalm 1611

  801. one of my

  802. favorite verses

  803. opened our

  804. service this

  805. morning with

  806. this verse

  807. it says

  808. you make known

  809. to me the

  810. path of life

  811. in your presence

  812. there is

  813. fullness

  814. of joy

  815. at your

  816. right hand

  817. are pleasures

  818. forevermore

  819. that's why

  820. we're commanded

  821. church

  822. to delight

  823. yourself

  824. in the Lord

  825. and you will

  826. have all

  827. the desires

  828. of your heart

  829. this verse

  830. is an invitation

  831. to true

  832. and lasting

  833. joy

  834. in

  835. him

  836. and that's

  837. why

  838. that's why

  839. this verse

  840. is an anchor

  841. for our

  842. prayer

  843. and prayer

  844. as we said

  845. at the beginning

  846. of our time

  847. together

  848. is one of the

  849. primary ways

  850. that we both

  851. experience

  852. and express

  853. delight

  854. in God

  855. prayer

  856. is one of the

  857. primary ways

  858. that God

  859. changes our

  860. hearts

  861. prayer is one of

  862. the primary ways

  863. that we have

  864. the desires

  865. of our heart

  866. met

  867. David Platt

  868. he says

  869. the secret

  870. to prayer

  871. is making

  872. your wants

  873. God's wants

  874. and then asking

  875. for whatever

  876. it is you want

  877. don't you love

  878. that

  879. the secret

  880. to prayer

  881. is making

  882. your wants

  883. God's wants

  884. and then go

  885. ask for whatever

  886. it is you want

  887. I want to ask

  888. you this week

  889. as we go

  890. from this

  891. place

  892. I want to

  893. encourage you

  894. to stretch

  895. yourself in

  896. prayer

  897. this week

  898. stretch yourself

  899. in prayer

  900. now that may

  901. look different

  902. for every single

  903. person in the

  904. room

  905. everyone has

  906. a different

  907. prayer life

  908. it looks a

  909. little bit

  910. different for

  911. you

  912. than for

  913. you

  914. than for

  915. you

  916. than for

  917. you

  918. I want

  919. to encourage

  920. you this

  921. week

  922. one application

  923. I want

  924. to give

  925. to you

  926. stretch

  927. yourself

  928. in prayer

  929. this week

  930. for you

  931. that may

  932. mean going

  933. from zero

  934. minutes to

  935. five every

  936. day

  937. for you

  938. that may

  939. mean

  940. beginning to

  941. pray with

  942. your spouse

  943. that week

  944. for you

  945. that may

  946. mean

  947. leaving your

  948. phone in

  949. the bedroom

  950. while you

  951. go somewhere

  952. else

  953. spend some

  954. time without

  955. distraction

  956. alone with

  957. the Lord

  958. in prayer

  959. I want

  960. you to

  961. stretch

  962. yourself

  963. and fight

  964. for your

  965. heart's delight

  966. in the Lord

  967. because it's in

  968. him that you'll

  969. know fullness

  970. of joy

  971. church we're

  972. going to

  973. conclude as

  974. we always

  975. do with

  976. prayer

  977. I'll pray

  978. for us

  979. and then

  980. we'll have a

  981. time of

  982. silent prayer

  983. it's an

  984. opportunity for

  985. you right

  986. where you are

  987. to respond

  988. to what you've

  989. just heard

  990. from the

  991. word

  992. in prayer

  993. and then

  994. I've also

  995. asked Treg

  996. if he would

  997. come up

  998. and lead

  999. us in a

  1000. time of

  1001. focused

  1002. prayer

  1003. as we

  1004. apply the

  1005. truths that

  1006. we've just

  1007. heard from

  1008. God's word

  1009. so if you

  1010. would

  1011. let's bow

  1012. together

  1013. and pray

  1014. Lord we

  1015. pray for

  1016. deeper delight

  1017. in you

  1018. maybe for

  1019. the first

  1020. time if

  1021. there's any

  1022. here who

  1023. don't know

  1024. you and

  1025. they hear

  1026. this call

  1027. to delight

  1028. of the

  1029. Lord and

  1030. that seems

  1031. so foreign

  1032. to their

  1033. hearts

  1034. God we

  1035. pray that

  1036. you would

  1037. place love

  1038. for you in

  1039. their hearts

  1040. now would

  1041. you do it

  1042. God would

  1043. you place

  1044. in them an

  1045. irresistible

  1046. desire to

  1047. know you

  1048. and to

  1049. love you

  1050. to be

  1051. with you

  1052. to obey

  1053. you

  1054. and father

  1055. for for

  1056. those of

  1057. us whose

  1058. desire and

  1059. delight has

  1060. grown cold

  1061. father we

  1062. pray that you

  1063. would kindle

  1064. a fire in

  1065. our hearts

  1066. that we

  1067. might love

  1068. you more

  1069. we ask that

  1070. we would

  1071. grow in

  1072. you

  1073. father we

  1074. pray for

  1075. new desires

  1076. in our

  1077. hearts we

  1078. pray for

  1079. your desires

  1080. we ask

  1081. that you

  1082. would lead

  1083. us away

  1084. from sinful

  1085. desires

  1086. worldly

  1087. desires

  1088. selfish

  1089. desires

  1090. would you

  1091. show us

  1092. clearly what

  1093. those desires

  1094. are in our

  1095. hearts and

  1096. lead us to

  1097. repent of

  1098. those and

  1099. to seek

  1100. fulfillment in

  1101. you

  1102. God we

  1103. pray these

  1104. things with

  1105. confidence that

  1106. you hear our

  1107. prayers that

  1108. even when we

  1109. don't know how

  1110. to pray as

  1111. we ought that

  1112. the spirit

  1113. himself intercedes

  1114. for the saints

  1115. according to

  1116. the will of

  1117. God we

  1118. love you

  1119. Lord and we

  1120. pray all this

  1121. in Jesus name

  1122. amen church

  1123. let's continue

  1124. to pray

  1125. silently where

  1126. we are

  1127. you
