  1. Amen. Please, if you would, take your Bibles and open them up to the Gospel of Matthew.

  2. We're walking through our mission and vision as a church family this month with an eye towards the theme of prayer.

  3. Our mission, as we've said, is to magnify the glory of God in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  4. And the three ways that we've identified that we do that is by enjoying the Lord, by equipping the saints, and by evangelizing the lost.

  5. So last week we saw that we enjoy God in prayer.

  6. And this week, our aim, as we look to the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6, verses 5-13, is that we might equip the saints to pray.

    Matthew 6:5–13

  7. So if you would, follow along with me as I read our passage, Matthew 6, verses 5-13.

    Matthew 6:5–13

  8. Pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  9. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

  10. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

  11. Pray then like this.

  12. Let's pray.

  13. Lord, we thank you for the gift of prayer.

  14. Father, we praise you for the wonderful privilege that it is that we can speak to you, the God of gods.

  15. And that you hear us.

  16. That you answer our prayers according to your infinite wisdom.

  17. And so we pray now, we ask, Father, as your disciples asked, would you teach us to pray?

  18. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  19. Amen.

  20. You may be seated.

  21. Amen.

  22. In 1535, a simple question from a German barber inspired what I have found to be one of the most helpful and insightful works on prayer that I've ever read.

  23. Peter the barber.

  24. He probably saw plenty of customers come in and out of his shop, but he had the privilege of serving as barber to at least one name that most of you would probably recognize.

  25. He was barber to the great reformer Martin Luther.

  26. At this time, Martin Luther was not popular.

  27. In fact, many wanted him dead for his teachings against the false doctrines of the Catholic Church.

  28. In fact, I would not be surprised if many would have loved for Barber Pete to make a strategic slip of the razor and put an end to Luther's teachings once and for all.

  29. But instead, as Luther sat himself down in the chair and placed himself at Pete the barber's mercy, Peter the barber made a confession.

  30. He said, I am struggling to pray.

  31. I don't know where to start.

  32. I don't know how to begin.

  33. I am worried about the coldness of my heart towards God.

  34. I am worried about the distance, the weakness of my prayers.

  35. And knowing that Luther was a man of prayer, he asked him for some help.

  36. And as a result, Luther wrote the simple short treatise.

  37. It is called A Simple Way to Pray, subtitled for Master Peter the barber.

  38. In this little work, what Luther does is he recommends taking several key texts and Christian documents.

  39. The Apostles' Creed is one.

  40. The Lord's Prayer, our passage this morning, is another.

  41. The Ten Commandments is another.

  42. And he recommends that you take one line at a time, one phrase at a time, and use each line as a launching pad, as a starting point for prayer.

  43. It is very helpful.

  44. In fact, I would recommend that each one of you, if you go home and look it up, it'll be easy to find.

  45. It's called A Simple Way to Pray.

  46. I would recommend each of you find it and put it into practice.

  47. Very helpful.

  48. Because Master Peter's problem, I believe, is not uncommon.

  49. I think that if you and I were honest, we would say that prayer does not always come naturally to us.

  50. We often struggle, as Pete the barber did, with prayer.

  51. And we wonder why.

  52. Well, prayer is a little bit, our discipline of prayer is a little bit like a muscle.

  53. Where if we train it, if we use it, if we strengthen that muscle, then we get used to it, we become stronger in it.

  54. But if we don't use that muscle, if we don't use that discipline, what happens?

  55. It begins to weaken.

  56. It begins to atrophy.

  57. If we use this muscle of prayer, one hour in prayer with the Lord can feel like just a moment.

  58. And when we don't, one moment of prayer can seem to feel like a lifetime.

  59. On top of this, as we know, of course, our enemy does not want us to pray.

  60. He loves our self-sufficiency.

  61. He loves our independence.

  62. He loves for us to go throughout our day with little to no thought of God.

  63. He loves our plans, our decisions, our autonomy, our self-sufficiency.

  64. And on top of this, the age that we live in does not make it easy to be a man or a woman committed to prayer.

  65. Our digital addictions make moments of quiet and solitude almost impossible to get.

  66. And when we do get them, it makes them almost unbearable because we're so dependent on distraction.

  67. We live in an age where we're accustomed to fast results.

  68. Everything is microwaved.

  69. And the pace of information that we receive day in and day out harms the patience that's required for prayer.

  70. And if we're honest, I think we would say that many of us, when we go to pray, have a hard time shaking the nagging feeling that we really ought to be doing something a little more productive.

  71. What we need, like Master Peter, like the Lord's disciples in our passage this morning, is once again to be taught, to be equipped, how to pray.

  72. And so following Luther's wisdom this morning, I want us to consider what Jesus teaches us and what he says about how we ought to pray by looking to the Lord's prayer.

  73. So let's ask the question along with Pete, how do we pray?

  74. How do we pray?

  75. Well, first, very briefly here, Jesus tells us first how not to pray.

  76. He gives us two ways not to pray here in verses 5 through 8.

  77. He says, when you pray, don't pray hypocritically and don't pray ritualistically.

  78. He says, don't pray hypocritically.

  79. Look there to verse 5.

  80. He says, when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites.

  81. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners that they may be seen by others.

  82. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

  83. We saw last week, didn't we, that the aim of prayer is delight in the Lord himself.

  84. The aim of prayer is the enjoyment of God.

  85. It's not a tool to be used to draw attention to yourself.

  86. In fact, this whole chapter, Matthew chapter 6, with all of its instructions for giving to the poor,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  87. for praying, for fasting, these practices of Christianity,

  88. he starts it off with this preface here in verse 1.

  89. He says, beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.

  90. For then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

  91. In other words, if all you want is man's approval and man's attention,

  92. then you can have it.

  93. And that's all that you will have.

  94. But he says, if your aim in prayer is to seek God's approval,

  95. if your aim in prayer is to seek God's wisdom, God's will,

  96. he says, when you pray, go into your room and shut the door.

  97. And pray to your Father who is in secret.

  98. And your Father who is in secret will reward you.

  99. Now, of course, I think I need to say this.

  100. This means, of course, that you shouldn't ever,

  101. it does not mean that you shouldn't ever pray in public.

  102. It does not mean that you shouldn't ever read your Bible in public,

  103. that you shouldn't practice Christianity out in public.

  104. I think it's a word of caution,

  105. especially for people like myself who have a very public ministry of the word and prayer.

  106. It's a word of caution that we have to constantly make sure

  107. that the aim of our hearts in doing these things is not the approval of man,

  108. but the approval of God.

  109. Don't pray hypocritically.

  110. But he also says, don't pray ritualistically.

  111. What do I mean?

  112. Look there to verse 7.

  113. He says,

  114. If praying hypocritically is using prayer to get other people to like you,

  115. then praying ritualistically is using prayer to get God to like you.

  116. If I just use the right words,

  117. if I just have the right turn of phrase,

  118. if I say the right words in the right combination,

  119. then maybe, just maybe, God will listen to my prayers,

  120. pay attention to my request,

  121. and I will get what I want.

  122. But he says, he makes it clear,

  123. God isn't moved by the length of our prayers.

  124. God isn't moved by the sum total of our words.

  125. What's he moved by?

  126. He's moved by the genuineness of our heart.

  127. And he gives an excellent reason here

  128. to pray simply and directly to the Lord, doesn't he?

  129. He says,

  130. Do not pray like them,

  131. for your Father knows what you need

  132. before you ask Him.

  133. Your Father knows what you need

  134. before you ask Him.

  135. I've heard people ask before

  136. in objecting to God's sovereignty,

  137. meaning His complete knowledge of all things

  138. and His complete control of all things,

  139. that He is totally sovereign.

  140. They say, well, if that's true,

  141. if God is totally sovereign,

  142. why pray?

  143. If God is in total control,

  144. why would I offer up any request to Him at all?

  145. Well, Jesus says,

  146. well, you've got that all backwards.

  147. He says, because God already knows what you need,

  148. pray.

  149. And pray then like this,

  150. not ritualistically,

  151. but confidently and simply and clearly

  152. with the confidence that our prayers

  153. are not breaking news for God.

  154. We aren't telling Him anything

  155. that He doesn't already know.

  156. We aren't tasked with coming up

  157. with the right words

  158. and the right order

  159. and the right combination

  160. to make Him pay attention

  161. to our problems.

  162. That's not the aim of our prayer.

  163. It's not a ritual.

  164. Don't pray hypocritically.

  165. Don't pray ritualistically.

  166. So then how are we to pray?

  167. He tells us,

  168. starting in verse 9.

  169. Here's where we'll spend

  170. the majority of our time together

  171. this morning.

  172. Second, He says,

  173. pray then like this.

  174. Verses 5 through 8

  175. were how not to pray.

  176. Now in verses 9 through 13,

  177. Jesus instructs us how to pray.

  178. The theologians have traditionally

  179. divided these requests up

  180. into six petitions.

  181. This morning, what I want us to do

  182. is I want us to think in terms

  183. of two categories here.

  184. The posture of our prayers

  185. and the provision of our prayers.

  186. These two categories here,

  187. how to pray,

  188. the posture,

  189. how we are to go about prayer,

  190. and the provision,

  191. what we are to pray for.

  192. First, let's think about

  193. the posture of our prayers

  194. because how we posture ourselves

  195. in prayer matters, doesn't it?

  196. The posture of our heart

  197. matters just as much,

  198. if not more,

  199. than the words that come out

  200. of our mouth

  201. when we come to pray.

  202. Jesus, of course,

  203. He knows this

  204. and so He tells us here

  205. in verse 9

  206. that we ought to pray

  207. first in the posture

  208. of a relationship.

  209. The posture of a relationship

  210. of a child

  211. to a father.

  212. Look there with me.

  213. He says,

  214. Pray then like this.

  215. Our Father in heaven.

  216. Our Father in heaven.

  217. You know, we should marvel

  218. at this.

  219. The grace,

  220. the gift that we

  221. can call God

  222. our own Father.

  223. You know,

  224. that's exactly the privilege

  225. that we've been given

  226. through the gospel

  227. of Jesus Christ.

  228. This is right at the core,

  229. at the essence

  230. of what it means

  231. to be a Christian.

  232. Now, whether or not

  233. you've been coming to church

  234. all your life

  235. or maybe this is

  236. new information to you,

  237. I want you to know

  238. this is at the very center

  239. of what we believe

  240. means to be a Christian.

  241. To be a Christian

  242. is to be an adopted

  243. son or daughter

  244. of God Himself

  245. through faith

  246. in the person

  247. and work

  248. of Jesus Christ.

  249. Galatians chapter 4,

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  250. it tells us,

  251. when the fullness

  252. of time had come,

  253. God sent forth

  254. His Son,

  255. born of a woman,

  256. born under the law

  257. to redeem those

  258. who were under the law

  259. so that we might receive

  260. the adoption

  261. as sons.

  262. And because you are sons,

  263. God has sent

  264. the Spirit

  265. of His Son

  266. into our hearts,

  267. crying,

  268. Abba,

  269. Father.

  270. So you are no longer

  271. a slave,

  272. but a son.

  273. And if a son,

  274. then an heir

  275. through God.

  276. Do you pray

  277. with the posture

  278. of a child?

  279. With the freedom

  280. and the privilege

  281. and the joy

  282. of a child

  283. coming to speak

  284. with His Father?

  285. J.I. Packer

  286. in his wonderful book,

  287. it's called

  288. Knowing God,

  289. he says this,

  290. he says,

  291. You hear that?

  292. He goes on,

  293. he says,

  294. if this is not

  295. the thought

  296. that prompts

  297. and controls

  298. his worship

  299. and prayers

  300. and his whole

  301. outlook on life,

  302. it means that

  303. he does not

  304. understand Christianity

  305. very well at all.

  306. The simple posture

  307. of a child

  308. speaking with his

  309. Father in Heaven,

  310. that ought to be

  311. our posture

  312. in prayer.

  313. And yet,

  314. even so,

  315. I want to

  316. caution you

  317. for a moment

  318. that even though

  319. we pray as

  320. children of God,

  321. we should not

  322. ever mistake

  323. the familiarity

  324. of prayer

  325. with flippancy,

  326. with irreverence

  327. to the Lord

  328. in prayer.

  329. This is our second

  330. posture

  331. in prayer.

  332. We must pray

  333. with a posture

  334. of reverence,

  335. the reverence

  336. of a sinner,

  337. in the presence

  338. of a holy God.

  339. And that's why

  340. he tells us here

  341. to pray

  342. to our Father

  343. in Heaven,

  344. high and exalted,

  345. far above

  346. our greatest

  347. imaginations,

  348. far above

  349. any earthly father

  350. that we may have

  351. had here in this life.

  352. He says,

  353. pray our Father

  354. in Heaven,

  355. hallowed be

  356. your name.

  357. Now your Bible

  358. might have a note

  359. there that explains

  360. the meaning

  361. of that phrase,

  362. hallowed be your name.

  363. That's not a word

  364. or a term

  365. that we tend to use

  366. in our everyday life.

  367. And my Bible

  368. has a note there

  369. that defines it.

  370. It says,

  371. let your name

  372. be kept holy

  373. or let your name

  374. be treated

  375. with reverence.

  376. So we ought to pray

  377. with the relationship

  378. of a child

  379. to a father

  380. and we pray

  381. with the reverence

  382. of a sinner

  383. to a holy God.

  384. There has to be

  385. a balance here

  386. of both.

  387. See,

  388. God is not so far

  389. from us

  390. that sinners

  391. can't speak

  392. with him.

  393. Christ solved

  394. that problem

  395. for us

  396. and yet

  397. he is not

  398. so like us

  399. that we ought

  400. to speak

  401. with him

  402. carelessly

  403. or irreverently.

  404. He's still God.

  405. That's what makes

  406. the access

  407. that we have

  408. to him

  409. in the name

  410. of Christ

  411. so incredible.

  412. We have free access

  413. to speak

  414. with God himself

  415. in Christ

  416. but we shouldn't

  417. speak with him

  418. and treat him

  419. so casually

  420. that we forget

  421. the reverence

  422. and awe

  423. that he's owed.

  424. I had a seminary

  425. professor

  426. who was speaking

  427. on prayer

  428. and he said

  429. one thing

  430. that helped him

  431. as a busy man

  432. with a family,

  433. a busy man

  434. with a wife,

  435. with children,

  436. a busy man

  437. with responsibilities

  438. at the seminary

  439. as a professor,

  440. a busy man

  441. as a pastor

  442. of a church,

  443. he made appointments

  444. and he kept them.

  445. He had to be very strategic

  446. with his time

  447. and when he had

  448. an appointment

  449. on his calendar

  450. he made sure

  451. that in that hour

  452. in that 30 minutes

  453. whatever it may be

  454. whoever he was

  455. sitting across the table

  456. with had his full attention

  457. for that moment.

  458. He said

  459. it's helpful for me

  460. even in planning out

  461. my prayers

  462. with the Lord

  463. to imagine

  464. and to pretend

  465. as if this is

  466. a holy appointment

  467. with God himself

  468. and the respect

  469. that I would give you

  470. if you were in my office

  471. sitting across from me

  472. speaking with me

  473. listening to me

  474. interacting with me

  475. I wouldn't be

  476. checking my phone

  477. I wouldn't be

  478. aimlessly wondering

  479. in my mind

  480. you would have

  481. my full attention

  482. for the hour

  483. of that appointment

  484. he said

  485. it's helpful for me

  486. to schedule

  487. appointed times

  488. with the Lord

  489. in prayer

  490. and to know

  491. that this holy appointment

  492. is to be treated

  493. with reverence

  494. pray with a posture

  495. of respect

  496. and reverence

  497. to the Lord

  498. not only this

  499. one more posture

  500. here

  501. he says

  502. pray with the posture

  503. of release

  504. pray with the posture

  505. of release

  506. look there at verse 10

  507. this is what he tells us

  508. he says

  509. we are to pray

  510. your kingdom come

  511. your will be done

  512. not my kingdom come

  513. not my will be done

  514. your kingdom come

  515. your will be done

  516. on earth

  517. as it is

  518. in heaven

  519. that's a prayer

  520. of release

  521. isn't it

  522. release from our desires

  523. our wants

  524. our world

  525. our kingdom

  526. our plans

  527. our hopes

  528. in our way

  529. and in our time

  530. and instead

  531. submitting it

  532. into the hands

  533. of a good

  534. and holy God

  535. we are called

  536. to pray

  537. submitting all

  538. of our requests

  539. whatever they may be

  540. all of the requests

  541. for provision

  542. that we will see here

  543. in just a moment

  544. whatever they may be

  545. with open hands

  546. and not

  547. controlling them

  548. tightly

  549. like we tend

  550. to want to do

  551. and not

  552. gripping them

  553. controlling them

  554. not demanding

  555. that they be answered

  556. the way we want

  557. in our way

  558. but submitting them

  559. to a good

  560. and sovereign God

  561. handing them back over

  562. to your father

  563. in heaven

  564. who loves you

  565. and cares for you

  566. who always knows

  567. best

  568. your kingdom come

  569. your will be done

  570. on earth

  571. as it is

  572. in heaven

  573. here in all and all

  574. as it is

  575. in heaven

  576. here at Seaweed Bay

  577. as our church family

  578. here in this place

  579. among us

  580. as it is

  581. in heaven

  582. in my life

  583. in my family

  584. in the lives

  585. of my children

  586. in the plans

  587. that I have

  588. as it is

  589. in heaven

  590. do you pray

  591. with an open

  592. grip

  593. on all of your plans

  594. easier said

  595. than done

  596. isn't it

  597. I don't think

  598. we have a better

  599. example

  600. anywhere

  601. than

  602. the prayer

  603. of our Lord

  604. himself

  605. in the garden

  606. of Gethsemane

  607. at the moment

  608. of his death

  609. was drawing near

  610. Jesus

  611. being fully God

  612. and fully man

  613. he prayed

  614. Lord

  615. if it is possible

  616. take this cup

  617. from me

  618. yet nevertheless

  619. not my will

  620. but yours

  621. be done

  622. in his divinity

  623. as God

  624. Jesus

  625. of course

  626. he knew full well

  627. what he signed up for

  628. he knew full well

  629. the plan of redemption

  630. that had been

  631. conceived before

  632. the foundations

  633. of the earth

  634. he was in on the plan

  635. as God

  636. yet as man

  637. he's prayed

  638. and taught us

  639. how to pray

  640. with a posture

  641. of release

  642. to the sovereign

  643. good will of God

  644. yet not my will

  645. he said

  646. but yours

  647. be done

  648. that's release

  649. do you pray like this

  650. that ought to be

  651. the posture

  652. of our prayers

  653. in blessed relationship

  654. in holy reverence

  655. and in submissive

  656. release

  657. to the will of God

  658. and now

  659. with that posture

  660. now

  661. we can begin to pray

  662. for God's provision

  663. let's look to the rest

  664. of our passage here

  665. in verses 11

  666. through 13

  667. and here

  668. I want us to see

  669. he models

  670. for us

  671. three prayers

  672. of provision

  673. three prayers

  674. of provision

  675. here

  676. Jesus tells us

  677. that we ought to

  678. first pray

  679. for the physical

  680. provision

  681. of God

  682. now this one

  683. comes naturally

  684. to us

  685. doesn't it

  686. this one

  687. if I had to guess

  688. I would say

  689. this one

  690. probably dominates

  691. most of our

  692. prayer lives

  693. most of our

  694. prayer life

  695. is spent

  696. requesting

  697. physical provision

  698. from the Lord

  699. look there

  700. with me

  701. to verse 11

  702. he says

  703. you ought to pray

  704. give us this day

  705. our daily bread

  706. give us this day

  707. our daily bread

  708. we're used to praying

  709. this sort of prayer

  710. Lord meet our needs

  711. meet our physical needs

  712. but if we're honest

  713. I would say

  714. most of us

  715. don't really know

  716. what it's like

  717. to pray

  718. actually needing

  719. daily bread

  720. the Israelites

  721. in the wilderness did

  722. now this is a

  723. a pointer

  724. it's a reference

  725. it's a call back

  726. to the experience

  727. of Israel

  728. wandering through

  729. the wilderness

  730. for 40 years

  731. and do you know

  732. what they ate

  733. for 40 years

  734. every single day

  735. do you remember

  736. what it was

  737. daily bread

  738. truly

  739. daily bread

  740. that came from them

  741. out of heaven

  742. from the hand of God

  743. dropped down

  744. onto the ground

  745. they ate it

  746. every day

  747. for 40 years

  748. they were satisfied

  749. not one of them

  750. went hungry

  751. they were provided

  752. for with daily bread

  753. 40 years

  754. in the wilderness

  755. this miraculous

  756. provision of God

  757. but what we fail

  758. to understand

  759. is that

  760. God has not

  761. stopped miraculously

  762. providing for

  763. any of us

  764. and each of us

  765. are just as

  766. dependent on the

  767. Lord's daily

  768. provision

  769. as the Israelites

  770. were in the wilderness

  771. that wilderness

  772. wandering

  773. is meant to be

  774. a lesson for us

  775. as God's people

  776. wandering

  777. through the wilderness

  778. wandering

  779. on the way

  780. to the promised land

  781. that we are

  782. dependent on the

  783. hand of God

  784. to provide

  785. for our every need

  786. church

  787. we don't

  788. feel

  789. dependent

  790. do we

  791. we feel

  792. so self-sufficient

  793. we're lured

  794. into this deception

  795. that we

  796. we don't

  797. really need

  798. God's hand

  799. to provide for us

  800. as much as

  801. he actually

  802. does

  803. this is a reminder

  804. for us

  805. that we need

  806. God to provide

  807. for our every need

  808. your home

  809. is a gift

  810. from God

  811. your food

  812. is a gift

  813. from God

  814. if God does not

  815. provide you lunch

  816. this afternoon

  817. you don't eat

  818. your clothing

  819. is a gift

  820. from God

  821. I don't care

  822. how rich

  823. and successful

  824. you are

  825. how big of a

  826. business

  827. you've built

  828. for yourself

  829. all of it

  830. from beginning

  831. to end

  832. is a gift

  833. of God's

  834. provision

  835. we're dependent

  836. on him

  837. so he says

  838. pray

  839. give us this day

  840. our daily bread

  841. not only this

  842. he says

  843. second

  844. we are to pray

  845. for the forgiveness

  846. of God

  847. this is a transition

  848. from the physical

  849. to the spiritual

  850. isn't it

  851. pray for

  852. the forgiveness

  853. of God

  854. he says

  855. forgive us

  856. our debts

  857. as we have

  858. also forgiven

  859. our debtors

  860. now if I had to guess

  861. I would probably guess

  862. that most of us

  863. have an easier time

  864. praying the first half

  865. of that phrase

  866. than the second half

  867. don't we

  868. we're much more

  869. inclined to say

  870. God forgive us

  871. our debts

  872. than we are to say

  873. forgive us

  874. as we have

  875. forgiven others

  876. aren't we

  877. but there's a

  878. correlation

  879. here

  880. these things

  881. are connected

  882. do you see

  883. he says

  884. forgive us

  885. our sins

  886. as we forgive

  887. those who sin

  888. against us

  889. forgive us

  890. our debts

  891. as we forgive

  892. our debtors

  893. this is a prayer

  894. for forgiveness

  895. that would come

  896. to us

  897. yes

  898. but that would also

  899. come through us

  900. to others

  901. Matthew

  902. tells a parable

  903. just a few chapters

  904. later

  905. in Matthew chapter 18

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  906. you can turn there

  907. if you'd like

  908. it's called

  909. the parable

  910. of the unforgiving

  911. servant

  912. and in it

  913. Peter

  914. he asks the Lord

  915. Lord how many times

  916. am I to forgive

  917. my brother

  918. seven

  919. that sounds like

  920. a lot for us

  921. right

  922. if somebody wrongs

  923. you seven times

  924. and you forgive

  925. them seven times

  926. I feel like

  927. we're doing

  928. pretty good

  929. seven

  930. Lord

  931. what does Jesus

  932. say

  933. he says

  934. not seven

  935. how about

  936. 77

  937. Peter

  938. and then he tells

  939. them this parable

  940. of a servant

  941. who owed his

  942. master

  943. 10,000

  944. talents

  945. now we don't

  946. deal in

  947. talents

  948. so I'll just

  949. tell you

  950. 10,000

  951. talents

  952. just so you

  953. know

  954. one talent

  955. is equal to

  956. about 20

  957. years

  958. labor

  959. just one

  960. so if you

  961. work your

  962. whole life

  963. from cradle

  964. to the grave

  965. you might

  966. maybe if you're

  967. doing pretty

  968. good

  969. you might

  970. can earn

  971. yourself

  972. five talents

  973. this man

  974. was indebted

  975. 10,000

  976. talents

  977. his more

  978. than 2,000

  979. lifetimes

  980. could ever pay

  981. back to his

  982. master

  983. and his

  984. master

  985. was fed

  986. up

  987. he was

  988. ready to

  989. sell him

  990. off

  991. with his

  992. wife

  993. and his

  994. children

  995. but the

  996. servant

  997. came

  998. and he

  999. begged

  1000. and he

  1001. pleaded

  1002. with his

  1003. master

  1004. please

  1005. master

  1006. have mercy

  1007. on me

  1008. please

  1009. master

  1010. have mercy

  1011. on me

  1012. I'll pay

  1013. back

  1014. every

  1015. cent

  1016. that I

  1017. owe

  1018. and so

  1019. Jesus

  1020. says his

  1021. master

  1022. shockingly

  1023. he did

  1024. two things

  1025. first he

  1026. released

  1027. him

  1028. no punishment

  1029. but second

  1030. even more

  1031. shocking

  1032. he forgave

  1033. him his

  1034. debt

  1035. he wiped

  1036. it

  1037. away

  1038. he forgave

  1039. it

  1040. totally

  1041. 10,000

  1042. talents

  1043. wiped away

  1044. like that

  1045. in an instant

  1046. and if the story

  1047. were to stop

  1048. there it would be

  1049. a beautiful picture

  1050. of the heart

  1051. of God

  1052. towards sinners

  1053. like us

  1054. sinners like us

  1055. who have earned

  1056. ourselves an

  1057. infinite debt

  1058. before a holy

  1059. God

  1060. a debt that

  1061. none of us

  1062. could ever

  1063. begin to climb

  1064. out of

  1065. in our own

  1066. strength

  1067. a debt that

  1068. a thousand

  1069. lifetimes

  1070. could never

  1071. repay

  1072. yet by the

  1073. mercy

  1074. of a good

  1075. and gracious

  1076. God

  1077. he has

  1078. wiped

  1079. away

  1080. our debt

  1081. by the

  1082. blood

  1083. of Christ

  1084. and yet

  1085. the story

  1086. continues

  1087. the story

  1088. continues

  1089. look

  1090. what happens

  1091. next

  1092. as the

  1093. servant

  1094. goes

  1095. and finds

  1096. one of his

  1097. fellow servants

  1098. who owes him

  1099. a hundred

  1100. denarii

  1101. it's not a

  1102. small amount

  1103. a hundred

  1104. denarii is

  1105. about a hundred

  1106. days worth

  1107. of work

  1108. less than a

  1109. year

  1110. a much

  1111. smaller

  1112. debt

  1113. that was

  1114. owed to

  1115. him

  1116. than what

  1117. he was

  1118. just

  1119. forgiven

  1120. by his

  1121. master

  1122. and he

  1123. grabbed the

  1124. man that

  1125. owed him

  1126. the money

  1127. and he

  1128. grabbed him

  1129. by the

  1130. throat

  1131. and began

  1132. to choke

  1133. him

  1134. and he

  1135. threw him

  1136. into prison

  1137. until he

  1138. could pay

  1139. the money

  1140. back

  1141. and Jesus

  1142. says the

  1143. master heard

  1144. of this

  1145. and said

  1146. you wicked

  1147. servant

  1148. I forgave

  1149. you

  1150. all of your

  1151. debt

  1152. because you

  1153. pleaded with

  1154. me

  1155. I was

  1156. merciful to

  1157. you

  1158. I forgave

  1159. you

  1160. should you

  1161. not have

  1162. had mercy

  1163. on your

  1164. fellow servant

  1165. as I

  1166. had mercy

  1167. on you

  1168. and he

  1169. took the

  1170. servant

  1171. and threw

  1172. him to

  1173. the jailer

  1174. until he

  1175. paid off

  1176. everything

  1177. he owed

  1178. here's the

  1179. point

  1180. when Jesus

  1181. says

  1182. so also

  1183. my heavenly

  1184. father will

  1185. do to

  1186. every one

  1187. of you

  1188. if you

  1189. do not

  1190. forgive your

  1191. brother from

  1192. your heart

  1193. to this

  1194. parable

  1195. it's a

  1196. lesson of

  1197. forgiveness

  1198. again that

  1199. comes to

  1200. us

  1201. but does

  1202. not stop

  1203. there

  1204. it goes

  1205. through us

  1206. to others

  1207. see the

  1208. sure sign

  1209. of someone

  1210. who has

  1211. grasped

  1212. and understood

  1213. the forgiveness

  1214. that we've

  1215. been given

  1216. in Christ

  1217. is that we

  1218. are quick

  1219. to extend

  1220. forgiveness

  1221. to others

  1222. you know

  1223. that's

  1224. in fact the

  1225. commitment

  1226. that we've

  1227. made to

  1228. one another

  1229. here as a

  1230. church

  1231. as brothers

  1232. and sisters

  1233. that are

  1234. committed

  1235. and covenant

  1236. to one

  1237. another

  1238. in this

  1239. church

  1240. family

  1241. as members

  1242. of Seaweed Bay

  1243. Baptist Church

  1244. every one

  1245. of us

  1246. agrees to

  1247. what's

  1248. called a

  1249. church

  1250. covenant

  1251. that lists

  1252. out our

  1253. commitments

  1254. to one

  1255. another

  1256. and here's

  1257. what one

  1258. of the

  1259. articles

  1260. says

  1261. it says

  1262. we will

  1263. walk

  1264. together

  1265. in Christian

  1266. love

  1267. as we

  1268. care for

  1269. and watch

  1270. over one

  1271. another

  1272. seeking one

  1273. another's

  1274. spiritual

  1275. good at

  1276. all times

  1277. we will

  1278. pray for

  1279. encourage

  1280. warn

  1281. rebuke

  1282. and admonish

  1283. one another

  1284. as occasion

  1285. may require

  1286. we will be

  1287. slow to

  1288. take offense

  1289. and will

  1290. eagerly

  1291. seek

  1292. reconciliation

  1293. without

  1294. delay

  1295. forgiving

  1296. one another

  1297. as God

  1298. in Christ

  1299. has forgiven

  1300. us

  1301. church

  1302. do you

  1303. have any

  1304. debtors

  1305. do you

  1306. have anyone

  1307. who has

  1308. wronged

  1309. you

  1310. do you

  1311. have anyone

  1312. from whom

  1313. you are

  1314. withholding

  1315. forgiveness

  1316. holding a

  1317. grudge

  1318. withholding

  1319. mercy

  1320. because

  1321. they have

  1322. wronged

  1323. you

  1324. seven

  1325. times

  1326. even

  1327. 77

  1328. times

  1329. this

  1330. prayer

  1331. is an

  1332. encouragement

  1333. for you

  1334. to remember

  1335. the debt

  1336. that you

  1337. have been

  1338. forgiven

  1339. of

  1340. by Christ

  1341. and then

  1342. to extend

  1343. that forgiveness

  1344. to others

  1345. 1 John 1

  1346. 9 tells us

  1347. that if we

  1348. confess our

  1349. sins

  1350. he is

  1351. faithful

  1352. and just

  1353. to forgive

  1354. us our

  1355. sins

  1356. and to

  1357. cleanse

  1358. us

  1359. from all

  1360. unrighteousness

  1361. so pray

  1362. for the

  1363. forgiveness

  1364. of God

  1365. to come

  1366. to you

  1367. and through

  1368. you

  1369. and then

  1370. finally

  1371. last one

  1372. here

  1373. he says

  1374. pray

  1375. for the

  1376. spiritual

  1377. protection

  1378. of God

  1379. pray for

  1380. the

  1381. spiritual

  1382. protection

  1383. of God

  1384. he says

  1385. in verse

  1386. 13

  1387. and lead

  1388. us not

  1389. into

  1390. temptation

  1391. but deliver

  1392. us

  1393. from evil

  1394. I wonder

  1395. how often

  1396. do you pray

  1397. for your

  1398. spiritual

  1399. protection

  1400. not physical

  1401. protection

  1402. I know we

  1403. pray for that

  1404. I know we

  1405. pray for our

  1406. physical health

  1407. I know we

  1408. pray for

  1409. traveling

  1410. mercies

  1411. I know we

  1412. pray for

  1413. safety

  1414. and all those

  1415. things are

  1416. well and

  1417. good

  1418. that's valuable

  1419. to pray

  1420. and to ask

  1421. the Lord

  1422. but I

  1423. wonder

  1424. how often

  1425. we pray

  1426. for our

  1427. spiritual

  1428. protection

  1429. because the

  1430. truth is

  1431. the spiritual

  1432. dangers that

  1433. we face

  1434. are 1000

  1435. times worse

  1436. than any

  1437. physical threat

  1438. against us

  1439. and Jesus

  1440. wants us to

  1441. pray with this

  1442. perspective in

  1443. mind

  1444. if you think

  1445. it's dangerous

  1446. for you to

  1447. get in your

  1448. car and

  1449. drive down

  1450. the road

  1451. drive down

  1452. highway 17

  1453. and I

  1454. realize it

  1455. is

  1456. how much

  1457. more

  1458. dangerous

  1459. is it

  1460. for you to

  1461. be a

  1462. child of

  1463. God

  1464. living in

  1465. enemy

  1466. territory

  1467. how much

  1468. more dangerous

  1469. is it for

  1470. you to be

  1471. in exile

  1472. here in a

  1473. fallen world

  1474. to be facing

  1475. the powers

  1476. at work

  1477. against us

  1478. of spiritual

  1479. darkness

  1480. powers that

  1481. we can't

  1482. see

  1483. to be in

  1484. the crosshairs

  1485. of a spiritual

  1486. enemy that

  1487. prowls around

  1488. like a roaring

  1489. lion just

  1490. seeking somebody

  1491. to devour

  1492. are we aware

  1493. of the spiritual

  1494. dangers

  1495. that face us

  1496. every single

  1497. day

  1498. he says

  1499. pray

  1500. Lord lead

  1501. us not

  1502. into temptation

  1503. but deliver

  1504. us from

  1505. evil

  1506. church

  1507. temptation

  1508. is

  1509. common

  1510. to us

  1511. all

  1512. every one

  1513. of us

  1514. is tempted

  1515. to sin

  1516. every single

  1517. day

  1518. the question

  1519. is

  1520. is your

  1521. armor

  1522. up

  1523. are you

  1524. prayed up

  1525. and ready

  1526. before you

  1527. walk out the

  1528. door to head

  1529. to work

  1530. in the

  1531. morning

  1532. are you

  1533. aware

  1534. of the

  1535. inclinations

  1536. of your

  1537. own heart

  1538. are you

  1539. aware

  1540. of the

  1541. ways

  1542. the

  1543. enemy

  1544. has

  1545. succeeded

  1546. in tempting

  1547. you in the

  1548. past

  1549. are you

  1550. aware

  1551. of the

  1552. ways

  1553. that you

  1554. have

  1555. fallen

  1556. into

  1557. temptation

  1558. even

  1559. this

  1560. week

  1561. are you

  1562. crying

  1563. out

  1564. to

  1565. Christ

  1566. daily

  1567. for

  1568. help

  1569. in the

  1570. face

  1571. of

  1572. temptation

  1573. the

  1574. good

  1575. news

  1576. of the

  1577. gospel

  1578. the book

  1579. of Hebrews

  1580. tells us

  1581. that if

  1582. you are

  1583. tempted

  1584. take

  1585. heart

  1586. that we

  1587. do not

  1588. have a

  1589. high priest

  1590. who is

  1591. unable

  1592. to sympathize

  1593. with our

  1594. weakness

  1595. but one

  1596. who in

  1597. every

  1598. respect

  1599. has been

  1600. tempted

  1601. as we

  1602. are

  1603. he

  1604. understands

  1605. the

  1606. struggles

  1607. that we

  1608. face

  1609. with one

  1610. key

  1611. exception

  1612. yet

  1613. without

  1614. sin

  1615. he won

  1616. the battle

  1617. and Christ

  1618. took the

  1619. enemy's

  1620. best shot

  1621. and so he

  1622. says in

  1623. verse 16

  1624. let us

  1625. then with

  1626. confidence

  1627. draw near

  1628. to the

  1629. throne

  1630. of grace

  1631. that we

  1632. may receive

  1633. mercy

  1634. and find

  1635. grace

  1636. to help

  1637. in time

  1638. of need

  1639. church

  1640. are we

  1641. praying

  1642. for spiritual

  1643. protection

  1644. for protection

  1645. from the

  1646. temptations

  1647. of the

  1648. enemy

  1649. and for

  1650. the

  1651. deliverance

  1652. of the

  1653. Lord

  1654. from this

  1655. domain

  1656. of darkness

  1657. we ought

  1658. to pray

  1659. these things

  1660. with confidence

  1661. knowing

  1662. with full

  1663. confidence

  1664. that the

  1665. day of

  1666. the Lord

  1667. will soon

  1668. come

  1669. when the

  1670. Lord

  1671. will

  1672. return

  1673. he will

  1674. finally

  1675. and totally

  1676. deliver us

  1677. from all

  1678. evil

  1679. church

  1680. is that

  1681. your hope

  1682. is that

  1683. your prayer

  1684. see all

  1685. of our

  1686. prayers

  1687. all of

  1688. these prayers

  1689. that the

  1690. Lord

  1691. teaches us

  1692. and equips

  1693. us to

  1694. pray

  1695. all of

  1696. our prayers

  1697. for

  1698. protection

  1699. all of

  1700. our prayers

  1701. for

  1702. deliverance

  1703. for the

  1704. kingdom of

  1705. God

  1706. to come

  1707. all of

  1708. these

  1709. will

  1710. ultimately

  1711. and finally

  1712. be answered

  1713. at the

  1714. return

  1715. of

  1716. King

  1717. Jesus

  1718. when he

  1719. comes to

  1720. put an

  1721. end finally

  1722. to our

  1723. enemy

  1724. and to

  1725. finally put

  1726. an end

  1727. to sin

  1728. and temptation

  1729. once and

  1730. for all

  1731. to finally

  1732. deliver all

  1733. of his

  1734. people

  1735. from this

  1736. domain of

  1737. darkness

  1738. to finally

  1739. bring his

  1740. kingdom

  1741. to earth

  1742. is that

  1743. your hope

  1744. is that

  1745. your prayer

  1746. as we

  1747. aim to

  1748. grow in

  1749. prayer

  1750. this month

  1751. church

  1752. my

  1753. encouragement

  1754. for you

  1755. this morning

  1756. is to

  1757. listen to

  1758. Martin Luther's

  1759. advice to

  1760. Peter the

  1761. barber

  1762. take the

  1763. Lord's

  1764. prayer

  1765. as we've

  1766. just done

  1767. and as

  1768. we'll do

  1769. in just

  1770. a moment

  1771. and take

  1772. it even

  1773. this afternoon

  1774. take it

  1775. daily

  1776. this week

  1777. would be

  1778. my encouragement

  1779. for you

  1780. take it

  1781. into your

  1782. place of

  1783. prayer

  1784. and walk

  1785. slowly

  1786. through each

  1787. line

  1788. calling out

  1789. to the

  1790. Lord

  1791. using this

  1792. as a

  1793. springboard

  1794. for your

  1795. prayers

  1796. and let

  1797. the Lord

  1798. teach you

  1799. how to

  1800. pray

  1801. we're going

  1802. to go to

  1803. a time of

  1804. prayer now

  1805. as we

  1806. close

  1807. I'll pray

  1808. and then

  1809. we'll have

  1810. an opportunity

  1811. for us

  1812. to pray

  1813. silently

  1814. right where

  1815. we are

  1816. and then

  1817. I will lead

  1818. us in a

  1819. prayer

  1820. through this

  1821. text

  1822. through the

  1823. Lord's

  1824. prayer

  1825. as we

  1826. respond to

  1827. God's

  1828. word

  1829. together

  1830. let's

  1831. bow

  1832. and pray

  1833. Father

  1834. thank you

  1835. for listening

  1836. to our

  1837. prayers

  1838. we thank

  1839. you

  1840. Jesus

  1841. for teaching

  1842. us to

  1843. pray

  1844. we thank

  1845. you

  1846. Jesus

  1847. for modeling

  1848. prayer

  1849. for us

  1850. we thank

  1851. you

  1852. Jesus

  1853. for interceding

  1854. for us

  1855. as our

  1856. great high

  1857. priest

  1858. we thank

  1859. you for

  1860. the spirit

  1861. who intercedes

  1862. for the

  1863. will

  1864. for the

  1865. saints

  1866. according to

  1867. the will

  1868. of God

  1869. and we

  1870. pray

  1871. Lord

  1872. that you

  1873. would

  1874. continue

  1875. to teach

  1876. us

  1877. to pray

  1878. that you

  1879. might be

  1880. honored

  1881. that you

  1882. might move

  1883. in powerful

  1884. ways among

  1885. us

  1886. we pray

  1887. in Christ's

  1888. name

  1889. amen

  1890. let's pray

  1891. silently

  1892. where we

  1893. are

  1894. you

  1895. want to

  1896. go

  1897. nonprofits

  1898. to

  1899. to
