  1. Amen. If you would, please take your Bibles and open them up to the book of Matthew chapter 9 this morning.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  2. We're finishing our mini-series on our mission and vision this morning.

  3. We've been going through our mission and vision in the month of January, specifically the past three weeks,

  4. discussing our vision in terms of the theme of prayer.

  5. And so we've come to our last E, enjoy, equip, evangelize, this morning.

  6. So we'll discuss that the task of evangelism cannot be accomplished apart from prayer.

  7. So if you would, please turn to Matthew chapter 9 and listen along with me as I read verses 35 through 38.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  8. And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

  9. and healing every disease and every affliction.

  10. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd.

  11. Then he said to his disciples,

  12. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

  13. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

  14. Lord, that we pray now as we consider the great task of evangelism.

  15. We pray as we hear your call to us to pray for laborers.

  16. We ask, Father, that you would stir our hearts with a heart of compassion for the lost.

  17. Would you lead us to pray and to ask you to move?

  18. And would you lead us to go and to proclaim?

  19. We ask in Jesus' name.

  20. Amen.

  21. You may be seated.

  22. Amen.

  23. I was reading some missionary stories this week, and I came across the story of a missionary named Hudson Taylor.

  24. You may be familiar with Hudson Taylor.

  25. Taylor was a missionary to the lost in China, and he was a man deeply committed to the gospel and deeply committed to the power of prayer.

  26. I read an excerpt from a book called Heroes of the Faith on Pioneer Trails.

  27. It was a missionary biography book, and it told the story of a sailing vessel that was struggling for control near the shores of New Guinea.

  28. Seeing the captain's anxious face, Hudson Taylor, he asked him what the issue was,

  29. and the captain told him that a four-knot current is carrying us swiftly towards some sunken reefs over there.

  30. Our fate seems to be sealed.

  31. To make matters worse, on the shore, waiting for them were cannibals lighting their fires and eager for them to crash so that they might have their next meal.

  32. And so the captain said, again, we have done everything that can be done.

  33. And Hudson Taylor looked at him, and he replied, no, captain, there's one thing that we have not done.

  34. There are four of us on board the ship here who are Christians.

  35. Let each of us retire to his cabin, and in agreed prayer, let us ask the Lord to give us a breeze immediately.

  36. This was agreed upon, and it was done.

  37. And after a few minutes, Hudson Taylor came out of his cabin, came up on the deck, confident that his petitions had been granted.

  38. He found the first officer, and he asked him, would you let down the corners of the mainsail?

  39. Well, what would be the good of that, asked the officer.

  40. Taylor told him that he and the other three men had been asking God and praying that the Lord would send a wind,

  41. and that it was coming immediately, there's not a minute to lose.

  42. Let down the sail now.

  43. And the officer replied, nonsense.

  44. You cannot pray up a wind.

  45. Well, just a few moments later, they noticed that the topmost sail was beginning to tremble a little bit.

  46. And so again, Hudson asked the captain, would you let down the sail?

  47. And they did.

  48. They let down the sail, and within a few moments, the breeze came just as they asked.

  49. And they were sailing away from the dangerous reefs, away from the cannibals on the beach,

  50. and the Lord had answered their prayers.

  51. As he later reflected on this experience, Taylor wrote down in his journal, he said,

  52. Thus God encouraged me, air landing on China's shores,

  53. to bring every variety of need to him in prayer,

  54. and to expect that he would honor the name of the Lord Jesus,

  55. and give the help which each emergency required.

  56. What I'd like for us to see this morning from our passage,

  57. as we look to Matthew chapter 9, verses 35 through 38,

    Matthew 9:35–38

  58. is that the world that we live in is in a state of emergency.

  59. And there is a problem facing us that's far greater than most of us tend to realize

  60. is a problem that's more dangerous than a sinking ship,

  61. is more dangerous than cannibals on the shoreline,

  62. is a problem that faces each and every one of us every single day,

  63. and it's a problem that you and I, we as Christians, are called to address.

  64. And the solution that the Lord gives us to this great problem,

  65. it begins with prayer.

  66. So what I want us to see this morning is the problem,

  67. I want us to see the problem clearly as it is,

  68. and then I want us to see the perspective that we ought to have regarding this problem,

  69. and then we'll close with the solution that the Lord prescribes,

  70. which is prayer.

  71. The problem, the perspective, and the prayer of evangelism.

  72. That'll be our outline for us this morning.

  73. First, let's consider the problem.

  74. Look there to verse 35 with me.

  75. Matthew tells us that Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages,

  76. teaching in their synagogues,

  77. and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,

  78. and healing every disease and every affliction.

  79. See, Jesus' ministry, it was one of miraculous demonstration of the power of God.

  80. He healed the sick.

  81. He cast out demons.

  82. He did many miraculous signs.

  83. And it was one of powerful teaching.

  84. It was a ministry of proclamation.

  85. He was not just healing for healing's sake.

  86. His deeds had a message attached.

  87. He proclaimed with word and deed the gospel of the kingdom of God,

  88. meaning that the rule and reign of God can be seen,

  89. and can be known,

  90. and can be entered into in Jesus Christ.

  91. That was his message.

  92. He proclaimed a message that sinners like us

  93. don't have to belong to the kingdom of this world anymore,

  94. but rather through faith in Christ,

  95. sinners like us can be transferred from belonging to this earthly kingdom,

  96. and now belong to the rule and the reign of God

  97. as citizens of the kingdom of God.

  98. He came proclaiming good news.

  99. And he did this because of the bad news.

  100. There's a problem here.

  101. Look there to verse 36 with me.

  102. It says,

  103. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them

  104. because they were harassed and helpless

  105. like sheep without a shepherd.

  106. I don't know if you know much about sheep,

  107. but they are not intelligent animals.

  108. And without a shepherd,

  109. they wonder about,

  110. they easily get lost,

  111. they're at risk of being harmed,

  112. they have nobody there to feed them,

  113. to provide for them,

  114. to guide them,

  115. to lead them,

  116. to protect them from dangers,

  117. from predators of wolves

  118. and others that would seek to do them harm.

  119. They're weak,

  120. they're vulnerable,

  121. they're at great risk to themselves

  122. without a shepherd.

  123. They're harassed and they're helpless,

  124. as our passage says this morning.

  125. But Jesus,

  126. he looks out at these crowds of people

  127. and he says that

  128. these crowds of people

  129. are like sheep without a shepherd.

  130. This is a description of lostness.

  131. They are aimless,

  132. helpless,

  133. harassed,

  134. because they don't belong

  135. to the good shepherd,

  136. Jesus Christ.

  137. They're lost.

  138. What I want us to understand

  139. is that this is the state

  140. of everyone outside of Christ.

  141. And this is the greatest problem

  142. in the world.

  143. Now think about it with me.

  144. What do you think the greatest problem

  145. in the world is right now?

  146. If your answer goes to poverty,

  147. that's a problem.

  148. That's too small.

  149. Bad politicians in Washington,

  150. bad leadership,

  151. bad decisions,

  152. that's a problem.

  153. It's too small.

  154. Cancer,

  155. disease,

  156. sickness,

  157. that's too small.

  158. War,

  159. violence,

  160. people killing each other

  161. here and there

  162. and everywhere,

  163. that's too small.

  164. The greatest problem

  165. that the world faces right now

  166. is lostness.

  167. There are people

  168. in every place

  169. of the globe

  170. who are spiritually harassed

  171. and helpless

  172. like sheep without a shepherd

  173. because they do not know Jesus.

  174. And we should understand

  175. that this is an eternal issue,

  176. church.

  177. I realize it may be going out of style

  178. to speak about hell,

  179. but I want to be clear with you,

  180. church,

  181. that hell awaits all who are lost.

  182. This is the bad news

  183. of the gospel.

  184. The only way that sinners

  185. can escape the wrath of God

  186. that we have earned ourselves

  187. for our sin,

  188. the only way that we can escape

  189. the punishment

  190. that we are owed

  191. for our sin

  192. is for sinners

  193. to hear the message

  194. of the gospel,

  195. the good news

  196. that Christ Jesus

  197. came into this world

  198. to save sinners,

  199. the good news

  200. that Christ Jesus

  201. has paid for our sins

  202. so that we don't have to,

  203. the good news

  204. that Jesus defeated death

  205. so it's no longer

  206. an enemy for us,

  207. the good news

  208. that Jesus conquered the grave

  209. so that it won't conquer us,

  210. unless you hear that message

  211. of the good news

  212. of the gospel

  213. and believe it,

  214. you will die in your sins

  215. and go to hell.

  216. Does this sound like bad news

  217. to you?

  218. Does that sound like a problem

  219. to you?

  220. Paul Chitwood,

  221. he rightly says,

  222. every other problem

  223. will end the day you die.

  224. There is no addiction

  225. in the grave,

  226. no family conflict

  227. in the grave,

  228. all your problems

  229. end but one.

  230. The magnitude of that problem

  231. sets in the minute you die.

  232. The greatest problem

  233. the world faces right now

  234. is that men and women

  235. all over the globe

  236. do not know the name of Jesus,

  237. do not love Jesus,

  238. do not honor Jesus,

  239. do not worship Jesus,

  240. they're lost.

  241. And what they desperately need

  242. more than anything

  243. is to enter into

  244. the kingdom of God

  245. by faith in Jesus Christ.

  246. And the only way

  247. they will enter into

  248. the kingdom of God

  249. by faith in Jesus Christ

  250. is if they hear

  251. the message of the gospel

  252. spoken to them

  253. so that they might believe

  254. and be saved.

  255. Let me give you

  256. a little perspective

  257. on this,

  258. church,

  259. globally.

  260. Globally,

  261. the issue of lostness

  262. globally is profound.

  263. You may have heard me

  264. pray for unreached

  265. people groups

  266. and maybe you've

  267. heard that term

  268. and you don't know

  269. exactly what that means.

  270. Unreached people groups.

  271. This definition comes

  272. from global frontier missions.

  273. Unreached people groups

  274. are defined as

  275. an identifiable group

  276. of people

  277. distinguished by

  278. a distinct culture,

  279. language,

  280. or social class

  281. who lack

  282. a community

  283. of Christians

  284. able to evangelize

  285. the rest of the people group

  286. without outside help.

  287. That's key.

  288. Without outside help.

  289. So in other words,

  290. the only opportunity

  291. for the people group

  292. to hear about

  293. salvation in Jesus Christ

  294. is through

  295. an external witness.

  296. Somebody else

  297. coming in

  298. from the outside

  299. bringing the gospel

  300. to them.

  301. Most missiologists

  302. they consider

  303. 2% of the population

  304. becoming Christ followers

  305. as the tipping point

  306. at which the group

  307. is now considered

  308. generally reached

  309. with the gospel.

  310. Just 2%.

  311. How many

  312. unreached people groups

  313. are there?

  314. Let me give you

  315. some numbers.

  316. There are now

  317. 8 billion people

  318. alive in the world today.

  319. 3.4 billion

  320. of them

  321. live in unreached

  322. people groups

  323. with little

  324. to no access

  325. to the gospel

  326. of Jesus Christ.

  327. That's

  328. 42.5%

  329. of the entire

  330. global population.

  331. Now

  332. approximately

  333. 85%

  334. of these

  335. unreached

  336. people groups

  337. they live in

  338. what's called

  339. the 1040 window.

  340. Now I'm going to

  341. take you all the way

  342. back to elementary school

  343. when you learn

  344. latitude and

  345. longitude.

  346. The 1040 window

  347. is the

  348. rectangular area

  349. of North Africa

  350. the Middle East

  351. and Asia

  352. that is approximately

  353. between 10 degrees

  354. north latitude

  355. and 40 degrees

  356. north latitude.

  357. two thirds

  358. of the world

  359. lives there.

  360. Many of them

  361. unreached

  362. with the gospel.

  363. They have never

  364. heard the name

  365. of Jesus.

  366. And this is a

  367. shocking number.

  368. Less than

  369. 3%

  370. of all

  371. known

  372. missionary work

  373. is done

  374. in this area.

  375. What are we doing?

  376. Why?

  377. Why?

  378. Well it's

  379. dangerous.

  380. It's incredibly

  381. dangerous.

  382. This message is

  383. not well received

  384. there.

  385. It's costly

  386. to go there.

  387. It's difficult

  388. terrain.

  389. It's hostile

  390. territory.

  391. It is not

  392. safe for you

  393. and your family

  394. to go.

  395. There are a

  396. million reasons

  397. not to go

  398. but someone

  399. must go

  400. or they will

  401. die in their

  402. sins and they

  403. will go to

  404. hell.

  405. Church,

  406. Romans 10.

  407. The message

  408. of the gospel

  409. is so simple

  410. and profound.

  411. Romans 10

  412. it tells us

  413. that everyone

  414. who calls

  415. upon the name

  416. of the Lord

  417. will be saved.

  418. How beautiful

  419. is that?

  420. But then Paul

  421. goes on

  422. and asks

  423. some questions.

  424. How then

  425. will they call

  426. on him

  427. whom they

  428. have not

  429. believed?

  430. And how

  431. are they

  432. to believe

  433. in him

  434. of whom

  435. they have

  436. never heard?

  437. And how

  438. are they

  439. to hear

  440. without

  441. someone

  442. preaching?

  443. And how

  444. are they

  445. to preach

  446. unless

  447. they are

  448. sent?

  449. As it

  450. is written,

  451. how beautiful

  452. are the feet

  453. of those

  454. who preach

  455. the good

  456. news.

  457. It's a

  458. problem

  459. globally.

  460. Lostness.

  461. But it's

  462. not just

  463. a problem

  464. out there.

  465. Let's zoom

  466. back in

  467. to where

  468. we are

  469. here

  470. all in

  471. all

  472. South

  473. Carolina

  474. because

  475. think

  476. with me

  477. it's

  478. not just

  479. an

  480. out

  481. there

  482. problem

  483. there's

  484. a problem

  485. of lostness

  486. right here

  487. in our

  488. neighborhood

  489. right here

  490. in our

  491. community

  492. right here

  493. where we

  494. live

  495. locally.

  496. Most of

  497. us here

  498. where we

  499. live

  500. are familiar

  501. with the

  502. name of

  503. Jesus.

  504. Most of

  505. the people

  506. where we

  507. live

  508. know the

  509. name of

  510. Jesus.

  511. But I

  512. am convinced

  513. that many

  514. have confused

  515. familiarity

  516. with faith.

  517. It is not

  518. enough to be

  519. familiar with

  520. the name of

  521. Jesus.

  522. To know who

  523. Jesus is

  524. is not enough

  525. to save

  526. anybody.

  527. Just like

  528. if you

  529. are drowning

  530. to know

  531. what a

  532. life jacket

  533. is

  534. is not

  535. enough to

  536. save you.

  537. Not unless

  538. you take

  539. hold and

  540. grab and

  541. grasp and

  542. cling to that

  543. life jacket

  544. wrap it around

  545. you so that

  546. it preserves

  547. your life.

  548. To know

  549. intellectually

  550. what salvation

  551. is is not

  552. enough.

  553. You have to

  554. cling to it.

  555. to know

  556. who Jesus

  557. is is not

  558. enough to

  559. save anyone

  560. apart from

  561. personal faith

  562. in Jesus

  563. Christ as

  564. Lord.

  565. Our problem

  566. here is not

  567. that we

  568. have not

  569. heard the

  570. name of

  571. Jesus.

  572. It's that

  573. we think

  574. knowing his

  575. name is

  576. enough.

  577. To have

  578. gone to

  579. church as

  580. a child

  581. and to be

  582. familiar with

  583. the stories

  584. of Jesus

  585. is not

  586. enough to

  587. save you.

  588. To know

  589. the old

  590. hymns.

  591. to have

  592. a copy

  593. of the

  594. Bible

  595. and the

  596. glove

  597. compartment

  598. of your

  599. truck.

  600. It's not

  601. enough to

  602. save you.

  603. The only

  604. thing that

  605. can save

  606. anyone is

  607. personal faith

  608. in Jesus

  609. Christ as

  610. Lord.

  611. As I look

  612. at the

  613. landscape here

  614. where we

  615. live I

  616. think it's

  617. clear that

  618. we have a

  619. lostness

  620. problem right

  621. here.

  622. The latest

  623. religious data

  624. that I could

  625. dig up was

  626. from 2010

  627. I realize

  628. that's 14

  629. years ago

  630. now lots

  631. has changed

  632. in 14

  633. years but

  634. as of

  635. 2010 43

  636. and a half

  637. percent of

  638. Charleston

  639. County residents

  640. claimed no

  641. religious affiliation

  642. whatsoever.

  643. That's almost

  644. half.

  645. Does that

  646. number surprise

  647. you?

  648. And so if

  649. you're wondering

  650. where you can

  651. go find a

  652. lost person

  653. to talk to

  654. go find

  655. two people

  656. and between

  657. the three

  658. of you one

  659. of you needs

  660. to hear about

  661. Jesus.

  662. That's what

  663. the numbers

  664. say.

  665. 14 years

  666. ago and I

  667. don't know

  668. that they've

  669. made positive

  670. trends since

  671. then.

  672. That's just

  673. a guess.

  674. Just 22.2%

  675. identified as

  676. an evangelical

  677. Protestant

  678. and I have

  679. no idea of

  680. that category

  681. how many of

  682. those are

  683. what I just

  684. described.

  685. People who

  686. grew up in

  687. church are

  688. familiar with

  689. church,

  690. familiar with

  691. the gospel,

  692. familiar with

  693. Jesus but

  694. do not have

  695. personal faith

  696. in Christ.

  697. Lostness is a

  698. problem right

  699. here in our

  700. neighborhoods,

  701. in our

  702. families,

  703. in our

  704. places of

  705. work.

  706. How many of

  707. us have

  708. lost people

  709. in our

  710. families?

  711. How many of

  712. us in our

  713. own neighborhoods,

  714. on our own

  715. streets,

  716. within a

  717. five minute

  718. radius of

  719. where we

  720. live,

  721. where we go

  722. about our

  723. day to day

  724. lives,

  725. have people

  726. within our

  727. reach who

  728. are lost,

  729. harassed,

  730. and helpless

  731. like sheep

  732. without a

  733. shepherd?

  734. What are we

  735. going to do

  736. about this

  737. problem,

  738. church?

  739. Well,

  740. the first

  741. thing we

  742. need,

  743. point number

  744. two,

  745. the first

  746. thing we

  747. need is to

  748. share Jesus'

  749. perspective on

  750. the problem.

  751. This is the

  752. perspective,

  753. point number

  754. two.

  755. I want you

  756. to notice

  757. Jesus'

  758. perspective on

  759. the problem

  760. of lostness.

  761. Look there

  762. to verse

  763. 36 again.

  764. It says,

  765. when he

  766. saw the

  767. crowds,

  768. he had

  769. compassion

  770. on them.

  771. He had

  772. compassion

  773. on them.

  774. That word

  775. there,

  776. compassion,

  777. you know

  778. what it

  779. literally

  780. means?

  781. It means

  782. a movement

  783. in the

  784. bowels.

  785. Okay?

  786. It's not a

  787. potty joke,

  788. all right?

  789. It's not what

  790. you think when

  791. we hear that

  792. language.

  793. In this

  794. culture,

  795. in this

  796. time,

  797. the bowels

  798. were thought

  799. to be the

  800. place of

  801. love,

  802. and pity.

  803. In other

  804. words,

  805. what it's

  806. saying is

  807. he felt

  808. this in

  809. his gut,

  810. deep down

  811. within him.

  812. This wasn't

  813. a fake,

  814. superficial,

  815. surface-level

  816. pity.

  817. This was a

  818. movement within

  819. him of

  820. genuine,

  821. heartfelt,

  822. yearning,

  823. and compassion

  824. for the

  825. lost.

  826. It's the

  827. same language,

  828. same word

  829. that's used

  830. in the

  831. parable of

  832. the Good

  833. Samaritan.

  834. You know

  835. the story.

  836. Everybody

  837. else went

  838. about their

  839. business.

  840. They saw

  841. this man

  842. struggling

  843. on the

  844. road,

  845. hurt,

  846. needy,

  847. and they

  848. went on

  849. about their

  850. business,

  851. but the

  852. Good

  853. Samaritan

  854. felt compassion,

  855. was moved

  856. with compassion

  857. to love his

  858. neighbor in

  859. need.

  860. He felt

  861. compassion.

  862. We have to

  863. ask whether

  864. or not we

  865. share that

  866. same movement

  867. within us.

  868. When we

  869. think about

  870. the lost

  871. around us,

  872. do we

  873. feel compassion?

  874. compassion.

  875. So many

  876. Christians,

  877. unfortunately,

  878. if we're

  879. being honest,

  880. we don't

  881. feel compassion.

  882. We feel

  883. indifference.

  884. We are

  885. too busy

  886. with our

  887. business,

  888. too busy

  889. going about

  890. our day,

  891. too occupied

  892. with our

  893. own lives

  894. to actually

  895. look out

  896. and care

  897. about the

  898. world around

  899. us that

  900. is perishing.

  901. I wonder

  902. if that

  903. describes you.

  904. If we're

  905. not indifferent,

  906. sometimes we,

  907. act even

  908. worse than

  909. that,

  910. sometimes we

  911. actually feel

  912. anger and

  913. frustration towards

  914. the lost.

  915. They don't

  916. act like

  917. Christians.

  918. Well,

  919. should we

  920. be surprised?

  921. They don't

  922. think like we

  923. want them to

  924. think or act

  925. like we want

  926. them to

  927. act.

  928. They act

  929. like lost

  930. people,

  931. so instead

  932. of having

  933. compassion on

  934. them,

  935. we get

  936. frustrated with

  937. them.

  938. Why can't

  939. they get

  940. themselves

  941. together?

  942. Church,

  943. this ought

  944. not be.

  945. If we want

  946. to reach the

  947. lost in our

  948. community,

  949. it has to

  950. start within

  951. our hearts.

  952. We have

  953. to view

  954. them as

  955. Christ views

  956. them.

  957. We have

  958. to be moved

  959. with compassion

  960. for them.

  961. We have

  962. to love

  963. them as

  964. Christ has

  965. loved us.

  966. Aren't we

  967. glad that the

  968. Lord had

  969. compassion on

  970. us?

  971. Aren't we

  972. glad that the

  973. Lord was not

  974. indifferent towards

  975. our need?

  976. Aren't we

  977. glad that the

  978. Lord was not

  979. angry towards

  980. our sin?

  981. That the

  982. Lord came

  983. down to

  984. us to bring

  985. us a message

  986. of hope,

  987. to pay for

  988. our sin,

  989. to love

  990. us by

  991. laying down

  992. his own

  993. life for

  994. us?

  995. Aren't we

  996. glad that

  997. the Lord

  998. had compassion

  999. on us?

  1000. As we

  1001. think about

  1002. bringing the

  1003. gospel to

  1004. the lost,

  1005. we don't

  1006. have to

  1007. extend to

  1008. them anything

  1009. the Lord

  1010. has not

  1011. first extended

  1012. to us in

  1013. the gospel.

  1014. Jesus sees

  1015. the lost

  1016. with a

  1017. perspective of

  1018. compassion.

  1019. Not only

  1020. this,

  1021. he also

  1022. sees the

  1023. lost with

  1024. a perspective

  1025. of hope.

  1026. Perspective

  1027. of hope.

  1028. Look there

  1029. to verse

  1030. 37.

  1031. As Jesus

  1032. looks out

  1033. and sees

  1034. the crowds,

  1035. he says

  1036. to his

  1037. disciples,

  1038. the harvest

  1039. is plentiful.

  1040. The harvest

  1041. is plentiful.

  1042. See,

  1043. the metaphor,

  1044. it changes

  1045. here from

  1046. a shepherding

  1047. illustration

  1048. now to

  1049. a farming

  1050. illustration.

  1051. He says

  1052. the lost

  1053. people in

  1054. the world

  1055. aren't just

  1056. shepherdless

  1057. sheep.

  1058. Jesus

  1059. says they're

  1060. also like

  1061. wheat,

  1062. ready and

  1063. waiting to

  1064. be harvested.

  1065. The harvest

  1066. is plentiful,

  1067. he says.

  1068. This isn't

  1069. the only

  1070. time that we

  1071. see this

  1072. sort of

  1073. illustration,

  1074. even in

  1075. the book

  1076. of Matthew.

  1077. And typically

  1078. as we think

  1079. about harvest,

  1080. as we hear

  1081. that language

  1082. of a harvest

  1083. being reaped,

  1084. speaking of

  1085. end time

  1086. language,

  1087. end time

  1088. language,

  1089. the end

  1090. of the age

  1091. when Christ

  1092. returns and

  1093. he saves

  1094. all of his

  1095. people all

  1096. over the

  1097. globe,

  1098. every corner

  1099. of the earth,

  1100. every tribe,

  1101. tongue,

  1102. and nation.

  1103. There's a

  1104. harvest of

  1105. those coming

  1106. to the

  1107. Lord.

  1108. Just a few

  1109. chapters later,

  1110. Matthew 13,

  1111. Jesus tells

  1112. a parable

  1113. called the

  1114. parable of

  1115. the weeds,

  1116. and he tells

  1117. the disciples

  1118. that there

  1119. is coming

  1120. an end

  1121. time harvest

  1122. where the

  1123. weeds of

  1124. the world

  1125. will be

  1126. burned up,

  1127. but the

  1128. wheat will

  1129. be gathered

  1130. into the

  1131. barn.

  1132. Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  1133. chapter 3,

  1134. John the

  1135. Baptist,

  1136. he warns

  1137. the Pharisees

  1138. and the

  1139. Sadducees

  1140. that judgment

  1141. is coming.

  1142. He says his

  1143. winnowing fork

  1144. is in his

  1145. hand,

  1146. he will

  1147. clear the

  1148. threshing

  1149. floor and

  1150. will gather

  1151. his wheat

  1152. into the

  1153. barn,

  1154. but the

  1155. chaff he

  1156. will burn

  1157. away with

  1158. unquenchable

  1159. fire.

  1160. See,

  1161. Jesus looks

  1162. out at the

  1163. lost world,

  1164. at the

  1165. lostness of

  1166. the world,

  1167. and he sees

  1168. what only he

  1169. can see.

  1170. He sees with

  1171. complete clarity

  1172. the wheat that

  1173. are ready to be

  1174. harvested.

  1175. He sees with

  1176. perfect sight

  1177. future believers

  1178. from every

  1179. tribe,

  1180. tongue,

  1181. and nation,

  1182. all of

  1183. God's elect

  1184. from every

  1185. nation on

  1186. earth.

  1187. He sees

  1188. the harvest.

  1189. All those

  1190. who will

  1191. certainly come

  1192. to faith in

  1193. Christ when

  1194. they hear the

  1195. message of

  1196. the gospel.

  1197. That's Jesus'

  1198. perspective on

  1199. the lost.

  1200. And if that's

  1201. his perspective,

  1202. we should know

  1203. that the

  1204. problem that

  1205. we face is

  1206. not hopeless,

  1207. church.

  1208. there is a

  1209. harvest to

  1210. be had if

  1211. we would go

  1212. and share.

  1213. The problem

  1214. of lostness

  1215. is an

  1216. incredible

  1217. opportunity to

  1218. bring glory

  1219. to King

  1220. Jesus.

  1221. Could you

  1222. just imagine

  1223. it?

  1224. That 1040

  1225. window with

  1226. all the lost

  1227. and unreached

  1228. people groups.

  1229. Could you

  1230. imagine men

  1231. and women

  1232. from the

  1233. Ansari

  1234. people of

  1235. India

  1236. hearing and

  1237. believing the

  1238. gospel for

  1239. the very

  1240. first time?

  1241. The very

  1242. first people

  1243. from their

  1244. people group

  1245. to hear the

  1246. name of

  1247. Jesus.

  1248. For them to

  1249. come to

  1250. faith in

  1251. Jesus.

  1252. For that

  1253. faith to

  1254. spread throughout

  1255. their family.

  1256. For it to

  1257. spread throughout

  1258. their community.

  1259. For disciples

  1260. to be made.

  1261. For the church

  1262. to be built.

  1263. For the gospel

  1264. to spread in

  1265. areas where

  1266. it's never

  1267. yet come.

  1268. For men and

  1269. women of the

  1270. Bambara people

  1271. in Mali.

  1272. People who

  1273. are made in

  1274. the image of

  1275. God who have

  1276. never heard the

  1277. name of

  1278. Christ.

  1279. Church, there

  1280. is work to

  1281. be done.

  1282. The church

  1283. isn't meant to

  1284. just be a

  1285. gathering place

  1286. where we come

  1287. together and

  1288. worship as

  1289. significant and

  1290. important as

  1291. that is.

  1292. I pour so

  1293. much energy

  1294. into this

  1295. one hour a

  1296. week.

  1297. I hope you

  1298. know I

  1299. value it.

  1300. This is not

  1301. the end of

  1302. what the

  1303. church is

  1304. meant to be

  1305. and do.

  1306. We gather

  1307. here that we

  1308. might scatter

  1309. with a message

  1310. to proclaim

  1311. to the lost

  1312. who don't

  1313. have what we

  1314. have by the

  1315. grace of

  1316. God.

  1317. church, there

  1318. is a harvest

  1319. to be reaped.

  1320. Can you

  1321. imagine it?

  1322. What would it

  1323. be like if

  1324. our neighbors

  1325. who don't

  1326. know Christ

  1327. right now

  1328. heard the

  1329. message of

  1330. the gospel

  1331. from your

  1332. lips, came

  1333. to faith in

  1334. Christ?

  1335. If our

  1336. family members

  1337. who don't

  1338. know Christ

  1339. right now,

  1340. currently,

  1341. heard the

  1342. message of

  1343. the gospel

  1344. and came

  1345. to faith,

  1346. could you

  1347. imagine the

  1348. potential for

  1349. eternal impact

  1350. that sits

  1351. in this

  1352. room right

  1353. now?

  1354. Every day

  1355. we have

  1356. these opportunities

  1357. to impact

  1358. someone's

  1359. eternity for

  1360. the glory

  1361. of God,

  1362. but there's

  1363. another problem

  1364. here, isn't

  1365. there?

  1366. Jesus says,

  1367. the harvest

  1368. is plentiful,

  1369. but the

  1370. laborers are

  1371. few.

  1372. The harvest

  1373. is plentiful,

  1374. church,

  1375. but the

  1376. laborers

  1377. are few.

  1378. The harvest

  1379. that we

  1380. long to

  1381. see,

  1382. we long

  1383. to see

  1384. lost people

  1385. coming into

  1386. the kingdom,

  1387. don't we?

  1388. Amen?

  1389. Don't we?

  1390. The harvest

  1391. will only

  1392. come in

  1393. as laborers

  1394. go out.

  1395. I don't

  1396. know how

  1397. much farming

  1398. you have

  1399. done.

  1400. Wheat

  1401. does not

  1402. walk itself

  1403. into the

  1404. barn.

  1405. Neither

  1406. do the

  1407. lost walk

  1408. themselves into

  1409. the kingdom

  1410. of God.

  1411. I don't

  1412. know if

  1413. you've

  1414. noticed,

  1415. that non-believers

  1416. are not

  1417. beating down

  1418. the doors

  1419. of our

  1420. church to

  1421. join us

  1422. for worship

  1423. on Sunday

  1424. morning.

  1425. That's not

  1426. how this

  1427. works.

  1428. The harvest

  1429. is plentiful,

  1430. but the

  1431. laborers,

  1432. the laborers

  1433. who will

  1434. go and

  1435. share the

  1436. good news,

  1437. who will

  1438. go and

  1439. proclaim the

  1440. gospel so

  1441. that that

  1442. seed of

  1443. the word

  1444. of Christ

  1445. might sow

  1446. deep into

  1447. the hearts

  1448. of the

  1449. lost and

  1450. sprout faith

  1451. in their

  1452. hearts.

  1453. The laborers

  1454. are few.

  1455. So,

  1456. what should

  1457. we do?

  1458. The answer

  1459. might surprise

  1460. you.

  1461. He says,

  1462. third,

  1463. pray.

  1464. Pray.

  1465. Pray.

  1466. Pray.

  1467. The harvest

  1468. is plentiful,

  1469. but the

  1470. laborers are

  1471. few.

  1472. Therefore,

  1473. pray earnestly

  1474. to the Lord

  1475. of the harvest

  1476. to send out

  1477. laborers into

  1478. his harvest.

  1479. Pray,

  1480. he says.

  1481. does that

  1482. answer

  1483. surprise you?

  1484. If you

  1485. and I

  1486. were given

  1487. the instructions

  1488. here,

  1489. you know

  1490. what we

  1491. would say?

  1492. The harvest

  1493. is plentiful,

  1494. there's a

  1495. harvest to be

  1496. had,

  1497. laborers are

  1498. few,

  1499. therefore,

  1500. go,

  1501. right?

  1502. Go out

  1503. there,

  1504. go,

  1505. go earnestly,

  1506. go,

  1507. get to work.

  1508. But he

  1509. says,

  1510. therefore,

  1511. pray.

  1512. Now,

  1513. of course,

  1514. the disciples,

  1515. they do

  1516. go.

  1517. This is

  1518. where context

  1519. helps us,

  1520. right?

  1521. They pray

  1522. and then

  1523. they go.

  1524. This isn't

  1525. pray and

  1526. don't go.

  1527. Look at what

  1528. happens just

  1529. in the next

  1530. verses here

  1531. in chapter

  1532. 10.

  1533. Jesus sends

  1534. them out

  1535. into the

  1536. harvest field.

  1537. Chapter

  1538. 10,

  1539. Jesus sends

  1540. out the

  1541. twelve,

  1542. telling them,

  1543. proclaim as

  1544. you go,

  1545. saying,

  1546. the kingdom

  1547. of heaven

  1548. is at

  1549. hand.

  1550. This is

  1551. not pray

  1552. for somebody

  1553. else to do

  1554. what you

  1555. are unwilling

  1556. to do.

  1557. The disciples

  1558. were about

  1559. to be sent

  1560. out as

  1561. laborers,

  1562. but before

  1563. they go

  1564. and as

  1565. they go,

  1566. Jesus commands

  1567. them,

  1568. pray earnestly

  1569. to the

  1570. Lord of the

  1571. harvest,

  1572. the one who

  1573. rules over

  1574. it all.

  1575. Pray earnestly

  1576. that he

  1577. would send

  1578. out laborers

  1579. into the

  1580. harvest field,

  1581. not other

  1582. laborers

  1583. beside you,

  1584. other laborers

  1585. alongside you.

  1586. More and

  1587. more and

  1588. more and

  1589. more laborers

  1590. so that the

  1591. message of

  1592. the gospel

  1593. would be

  1594. heard and

  1595. would be

  1596. believed and

  1597. that we

  1598. might see

  1599. a harvest

  1600. for the

  1601. glory of

  1602. God.

  1603. Pray and

  1604. go.

  1605. Pray and

  1606. go.

  1607. That's the

  1608. game plan

  1609. for the

  1610. church.

  1611. Pray and

  1612. go.

  1613. Pray and

  1614. go.

  1615. Craig Tuck

  1616. is the

  1617. associational

  1618. mission

  1619. strategist for

  1620. the Charleston

  1621. Baptist

  1622. Association.

  1623. Some of

  1624. you know

  1625. that name.

  1626. He's

  1627. somebody who

  1628. cares deeply

  1629. about seeing

  1630. the gospel

  1631. spread throughout

  1632. our area

  1633. and the

  1634. Charleston

  1635. County area.

  1636. If you

  1637. go get

  1638. breakfast

  1639. with

  1640. Craig

  1641. at

  1642. 938

  1643. you will

  1644. start to

  1645. hear this

  1646. beeping

  1647. noise.

  1648. Beep,

  1649. beep,

  1650. beep,

  1651. beep,

  1652. beep,

  1653. beep,

  1654. beep.

  1655. I'm telling

  1656. you right

  1657. now so you

  1658. know what

  1659. to expect.

  1660. 938 is

  1661. going to

  1662. happen.

  1663. I just

  1664. assume it

  1665. happens in

  1666. the evening

  1667. as well

  1668. at 938

  1669. but every

  1670. day his

  1671. watch is set

  1672. with an

  1673. alarm to

  1674. go off and

  1675. interrupt

  1676. whatever it

  1677. is he's

  1678. doing,

  1679. whatever

  1680. important

  1681. meeting he

  1682. has,

1683. Whatever it is, he will stop and he will be reminded to pray.

  1684. Matthew 9, 38.

1685. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

1686. Church, I want to ask you two questions as we consider how to apply this passage.

1687. I want each of you to answer these two questions in your own heart and as you go from this place this afternoon.

1688. Number one, are you praying for laborers?

1689. Are you earnestly asking God to send out more evangelism-minded Christians into the world

1690. that are ready to open up their mouths and actually share the good news of the gospel no matter the cost?

1691. Are you praying for more laborers here in Charleston, here in Allendal, in Mount Pleasant and beyond?

1692. Are you praying for laborers in the 1040 window all across the globe where men and women do not know the name of Jesus?

  1693. Are you praying?

1694. And question number two, are you going?

1695. The Great Commission is given to all of us, church.

1696. Jesus says, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

1697. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

1698. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

1699. teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you,

1700. and surely I am with you even to the uttermost ends of the earth.

  1701. Are you going?

1702. For some, that might mean packing up and going somewhere far away.

1703. Church, I pray that a Seaweed Bay Baptist Church might in some time, in some way,

1704. be used of the Lord to send missionaries to the end of the earth.

1705. That might seem like a big prayer for us right now.

  1706. Maybe it is.

1707. I believe the Lord will do it in time.

1708. I pray that the Lord would show us somehow, some way,

1709. how we can support this missionary endeavor to the ends of the earth

1710. to bring the gospel to places and peoples who do not know the good news of Christ.

1711. But for all of us, it means beginning to see right where you are as a mission field.

1712. Right now, right where the Lord has placed you in your homes, in your places of work,

1713. in your neighborhoods, in your communities, in your route to and from the grocery store,

1714. whatever it is that you do day in and day out,

1715. to begin to see it as a mission field,

1716. and to begin to see the lost all around you as Christ does,

1717. with compassion and hope that the Lord will save,

1718. if we would open our mouth and proclaim the good news of the gospel.

1719. Who do you know that needs to hear the message of the gospel?

1720. Who do you know that is harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd?

1721. Who needs to hear the gospel?

1722. I want to close this morning by sharing one more story about Hudson Taylor.

1723. His life was an answer to prayer.

1724. I don't know if you know his story very well or not.

1725. His mother and his father, before he was even born,

1726. committed him in prayer to the Lord

1727. and prayed that their child might one day be saved

1728. and might one day go and be a missionary in China.

  1729. Can you believe that?

1730. And through prayer, their desires were answered.

1731. Hudson Taylor became obsessed with bringing the message of the gospel to China.

1732. He joined the Chinese Evangelization Society and set sail in 1853.

1733. And the Heroes of Faith on Pioneer Trails book shared one more story I want to share with you this morning.

1734. He said that while traveling one day on a boat,

1735. Hudson Taylor met a Chinese man who had once visited England.

1736. And the man listened to Hudson Taylor as he shared the gospel.

1737. And he was emotionally moved by what he heard about the grace of God.

1738. He was moved to tears at the message of the gospel.

1739. But something within him, I don't know what it was,

1740. he refused to accept the offer of salvation.

1741. Well, a little while later, Hudson Taylor was watching.

1742. And the man, Hudson Taylor saw the man distressed

1743. and saw him throw himself overboard

1744. and began to sink in the water.

1745. Obviously distressed, Hudson looked around for help

1746. and he saw a fishing boat that had a drag net close by

1747. and so he shouted out to the fishermen,

1748. Come over here, drag your net on this spot.

1749. A man just jumped over here.

  1750. He sank, he's drowning.

1751. And they responded and they said,

  1752. It's not convenient.

  1753. I said, Don't talk about convenience.

1754. A man is drowning here, he cried.

  1755. We're busy fishing.

  1756. We cannot come.

1757. Taylor urged them to come at once.

1758. He offered to pay them

1759. and they perked up a little bit about this offer.

1760. They wanted to know how much they could get.

1761. He offered $5 and they refused.

1762. So he said, Y'all come quickly and bring this net.

1763. I'll give you all the money I have, $14.

1764. Finally, the boat was brought and the hooks were let down.

1765. In less than a minute, they brought up the body.

1766. But all efforts at resuscitation failed

1767. and the man was dead.

1768. Hudson Taylor, the incident obviously was sad in and of itself.

1769. But in this incident, he saw an even greater lesson.

1770. The book asked the question,

1771. Were not those fishermen guilty of the death of the man?

1772. And that they had the opportunity and the means of saving him,

1773. but refused to use them.

1774. Most assuredly, they were guilty.

  1775. And yet, says Taylor,

  1776. let us pause,

1777. ere we pronounce judgment against them,

1778. lest a greater than Nathan answer,

  1779. Thou art the man.

1780. Is it so wicked a thing to neglect to save the body?

1781. Of how much sorer punishment then is he worthy

1782. who leaves the immortal soul to perish?

1783. The Lord Jesus commands me,

  1784. commands you,

1785. go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

1786. Shall we say to him,

1787. No, it is not convenient?

1788. Shall we tell him that we are busy at fishing

1789. or other business and cannot go?

1790. Oh, let us pray and let us labor

1791. for the salvation of China's un-evangelized millions.

1792. Let us pray and let us labor, church.

1793. Let us pray and let us go.

1794. Lord, we ask now in prayer,

1795. would you send out laborers into your harvest field?

  1796. We ask, Father,

1797. would you move this church to obedience

  1798. to the Great Commission?

1799. Help us to see this is not optional.

1800. Help us to see the harvest as you see the lost.

1801. Help us to share your heart of compassion

1802. on those who are suffering, harassed and helpless

1803. like sheep without a shepherd.

  1804. Father, we pray,

1805. would you bring eternal salvation

1806. to the souls of the lost

1807. through the lips of this church?

1808. We ask this in the name of Jesus.

  1809. Amen.
