  1. As we do each week, I would ask you, in honor of God's Word, if you're able, if you would

  2. stand as we read the passage this morning out of John, the book of John, chapter 17,

    John 17:1–5

  3. verses 1 through 5.

  4. When Jesus had spoken these words, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and He said, Father,

  5. the hour has come. Glorify Your Son that the Son may glorify You, since You've given Him authority

  6. over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that

  7. they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on earth, having

  8. accomplished the work that You gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in Your own presence,

  9. with the glory that I had with You before the world existed. Let's pray. Lord,

  10. I pray that Your Word would come alive in our hearts. I pray that You'd open our eyes to see

  11. and our ears to hear spiritually what it is You'd say to us this morning. Father, bless this time as

  12. we lift up Your Word. We pray in Your name. Amen.

  13. What a privilege for me to be able to preach out of this chapter of John, chapter 17, this beautiful

    John 17 chapter mention

  14. prayer that Jesus prays to the Father. We get a glimpse into the intimacy of their relationship.

  15. Often, this has been called the high priestly prayer of Christ. He prays for His disciples,

  16. and we see later in this chapter, He also prays for those who will trust in Him after,

  17. meaning you and I. Those of us who are in the kingdom, Christ has lifted up a prayer in that

  18. day on our behalf as well. But this morning, we look at the first five verses of this,

  19. chapter. And this is a request that He makes not for His disciples and not for those who will know

  20. Him in the future, but He is speaking to the Father with an open heart. There's an intimacy that we can

  21. feel here as we read the passage. And He's pouring Himself out to the Father as He is getting ready this

  22. very night. The night that He said this to the disciples, the night that He prayed this to the

  23. Father, is the very night that He would be arrested. The next morning, He would be taken to Caiaphas,

  24. and He would be tried, and He would be flogged, or that is, beaten, and He would be ultimately the

  25. following day placed on a cross, and He'd be crucified the following day. So we're very, very close to all of

  26. that happening. And this prayer is spilling out of Christ as He communes with the Father before that

  27. time. And so I want you, if you will, to read with me again this passage, a verse at a time.

  28. As we read it, there are many questions that would come out of this text. And that is my goal this

  29. morning that we would look at those questions and answer the questions as we look at the truth

  30. that's woven here in this prayer. So verse 1, I'll reread again. And I would ask, if you will,

  31. hopefully you have your Bible open and you can read along with me. Verse 1, it says this,

  32. when Jesus had spoken these words, and I will hesitate and ask a few questions here,

  33. what words, Jesus? What words are you talking about? Really, John has wrote this as an entrance

  34. before Christ has prayed to the Father. What words, John, are you talking about? He lifted up his eyes to

  35. heaven in this posture of prayer and said, Father, the hour has come. What hour are you talking about,

  36. Christ? What hour? So first, this question, what words? John, you said that when Jesus had spoken

  37. these words, what are you referring to, John? He's referring to the words that Christ has been

  38. sharing with them to prepare them for this moment. In a sense, the disciples know that there's coming a

  39. time when Christ is going to be crucified. Christ has already shared that with them. But you know,

  40. it's as if it hasn't stuck. It's as if they haven't understood the depth of what Christ has been

  41. sharing with them. Christ has been sharing all these things to prepare them for the ministry that

  42. he's calling them to. For three years, they've walked with him. They've experienced Christ personally.

  43. They've eaten with him. They've slept with him. They've traveled with him. They've ministered with him.

  44. They've watched him perform miracles. They've seen the signs as they've been with him. And Christ

  45. has brought them along for a purpose. We've, if we were to look forward into the book of Acts, and we were

  46. to look at the first chapter and the second chapter of Acts, we would see what Christ was doing. He was

  47. preparing them to be ready to minister the gospel. That they would know Christ in such a way and they would

  48. understand truth in such a way that God would use them to take the gospel to the world.

  49. You know, Acts 1.8 says this. He says to his disciples, he said, you will be. He didn't say you ought to be or you should be,

  50. or you might want to think about being. He said, you will be my witnesses. First in Jerusalem,

  51. Jerusalem, and in Judea, and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the world. But you know what he said to them

  52. after he died? He said, wait in Jerusalem. There's something you lack. Yes, you've walked with me. Yes,

  53. you've seen the ministry. Yes, you really do understand that I'm the Messiah, and you have truly believed in me.

  54. But there's something you need. You need the power of the Holy Spirit. And Acts 1.8 says,

  55. is when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, then you will be my witnesses. You know, Christ has spent all this

  56. time with them in this last week of Christ's life. When they entered into the upper room, he begins sharing

  57. things that are extremely important for them to hear in order that when he dies, when he's no longer with

  58. them on a daily basis, that he would have equipped them to be the witnesses he's called them to be.

  59. Those are the words that he's referring to here.

  60. He's foretold them already that there's coming a time when he's going to be crucified, when he's going

  61. to be taken away from them, when he's going back to the Father. They haven't totally understood.

  62. But now it is the very night that he'll be arrested. And he prays this with his eyes

  63. lifted to heaven, meaning in a spirit of reverence that his total focus is on heaven and the heavenly

  64. kingdom and the Father. There are no distractions going on for Christ as he lifts up his eyes to

  65. heaven. And he says this, Father. How intimate is that? To recognize the Father.

  66. Not only here in this verse, verse one, but if we were to look forward, we would see this intimacy

  67. also in verse five. And we see it again in verse 11 and verse 21 and verse 24 and verse 25 again and

  68. again and again and again and again. He calls out saying, Father, the sovereign one, the holy

  69. one, the one worthy of worship, Father. He says this, he says the hour has come. And the question

  70. that rises from the text is this, Christ, what hour? What hour are you referring to? You know,

  71. I would say this for us in our ears that it is the greatest hour in the history of humanity.

  72. It is the greatest hour that has ever been or will ever be. This hour that he's referring

  73. to. And he's talked about it already in the book of John. If you turn back to, you don't

  74. have to flip, but I'll flip back to chapter seven. In the history of Israel, there are three travel

  75. holidays, three travel festivals where all the males are required by the law of Moses to return

  76. to Jerusalem to celebrate three festivals. One of those festivals was the Feast of Booths. And

  77. in chapter seven, his brothers were getting ready to travel and they turned to Jesus and say,

  78. come on. They didn't believe that he was the Messiah. He was raised with them as a boy. They

  79. watched him grow up. And now as a Messiah, they can't quite get there. And so in a sense of ridicule,

  80. they said, why don't you go? Why don't you tell everybody who you are? And he says this, he says,

  81. my time has not yet come. He says, you go, you go ahead. Now, did Christ ultimately go? Yes.

  82. He followed them. But he said this, my time has not yet come. My time has not yet fully come. He says

  83. again, what time are you talking about Christ? It's this hour that he's always pointing toward this hour,

  84. this culmination of all of biblical history, this hour that he's referring to in his prayer to the

  85. father. We see again in later in chapter seven, it says this, there were many among the Pharisees

  86. and the religious leaders of the nation of Israel that were seeking to kill Jesus. And we've heard

  87. about those stories as we've worked through the book of John, but they were seeking to kill him.

  88. And the word of God says this. So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him. Why?

  89. The word of God declares this because his hour had not yet come. There is an hour that is coming

  90. where they will lay their hands on Christ and they will arrest Christ and they will beat him and

  91. flog him and they will ridicule him and mock him and they will hang him on a cross. But the hour at that

  92. point had not come. Chapter 12. The disciples were talking to Christ. And as they shared, trying to

  93. understand the truths that Christ would share with them, Christ said this and Jesus answered them,

  94. the hour has come for the son of man to be glorified.

  95. It goes on to say, now is my soul troubled. What do you mean? What does Christ mean? His soul is troubled.

  96. Christ came into this world for this very hour. And yet, as he approaches this hour, the word of God says it is

  97. heart was troubled. There was a heaviness that laid upon him. You and I would know the heaviness is when

  98. he approaches this time where he will take on the sins of the world. The word of God says the father

  99. turns his back on Christ and Christ for the first time ever would lose the fellowship with the father.

  100. And that is the trouble that he refers to. And he says, what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour.

  101. But for this purpose, I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. What does he mean?

  102. As I approach this hour, may you be glorified in the sacrifice that I'm getting ready to step into.

  103. The suffering that I'm getting ready to endure. And a voice came from heaven and said to the

  104. son, I have glorified it. That is your name. And I will glorify it again. I've glorified my name

  105. in you, Christ, and I will glorify it again. 13.1 says this now.

  106. Now, before the feast of Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour has come to depart from this world to the

  107. father, you know, he, it was the very feast of Passover was the event that had brought Christ

  108. into Jerusalem. And you remember Palm Sunday where they met him on the roads as he rode in on a donkey

  109. as the Passover lamb. And they took these branches and they, they, they sang hallelujah.

  110. They laid him in the street and they laid Jackson Street on a donkey approaches Jerusalem as the Passover lamb.

  111. And Christ says this now is the son of man glorified and God is glorified in him. Now, this is the hour

  112. that he's referring to. And so we look back in chapter 17 and we enter back into this prayer of Christ.

  113. And again, he says this father, the hour has come.

  114. This hour that was prophesied in the Old Testament. What do you remember about the prophecies?

  115. Do you know Christ knew every element of this hour? Do you know that it was all foretold the things that

  116. were going to happen to the Messiah? Do you think that he knew who he was? Do you think that he realized

  117. that he was the Messiah? Yes, of course. Matter of fact, if we glance down at verse five,

  118. we will see something that confirms that. So in verse five, it says this, and now father glorify me in your own

  119. presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

  120. You know that Christ.

  121. In some way that I can't understand, he remembered the glory. He understood the glory that he had with

  122. the father, the intimate fellowship, the union, the oneness that he had with the father. He understood

  123. who he was. He understood that he was with the father in eternity.

  124. It is the hour that has been foretold. I could turn literally to hundreds of passages in the Old

  125. Testament, but I will turn to just a couple. And I want you to hear the prophecies that foretell of

  126. this very hour that Christ would have known.

  127. Isaiah 52.

  128. Isaiah 52.

  129. Says this.

  130. Behold, my servant shall act wisely.

  131. He shall be high and lifted up. Who is his servant? His servant is his son.

  132. The one who perfectly serves him. The Messiah.

  133. Behold, my servant shall act wisely.

  134. He will always honor the father in every way. He will never sin.

  135. He shall be high and lifted up. In what way will this servant be high and lifted up?

  136. It's Jesus who will be high and lifted up on a cross.

  137. He will be elevated for all to see.

  138. High and lifted up on this cross.

  139. And shall be exalted.

  140. In what way exalted?

  141. The father will say, this is my son in whom I am well pleased.

  142. And he will be exalted when the father causes him to be resurrected from the dead.

  143. He will be exalted.

  144. We move to verse 14.

  145. It says, as many were astonished at you,

  146. his appearance was so marred beyond human semblance,

  147. and his form beyond that of the children of mankind.

  148. You know what this is talking about?

  149. It's talking about the time when Christ would be staked,

  150. and the Roman guard with a whip would beat him almost to death,

  151. and would so rip his flesh and so bloody his body that you could hardly recognize that he was human.

  152. Christ knew that this awaited him at the cross.

  153. The heaviness of the physical beating that he would take,

  154. of the ridicule that he would take,

  155. was even less, if we can imagine, than the separation between him and the father.

  156. The fellowship he had always known,

  157. he would be separated from that.

  158. Chapter 53 of Isaiah says this.

  159. This is familiar to all of us,

  160. but it points to this very hour.

  161. Listen at what this hour entails.

  162. As I read a few verses out of chapter 53.

  163. Who has believed what he has heard from us?

  164. And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

  165. For he grew up before him like a young plant,

  166. and like a root out of dry ground.

  167. Who is this?

  168. It's talking about Christ.

  169. He grew up from a child.

  170. He was born as a babe.

  171. Emmanuel, God with us.

  172. And he grew up as a root.

  173. You remember the prophecies of the Old Testament talked about the root of Jesse?

  174. It's through the line of Jesse that the Messiah would be born.

  175. And this is Christ is referring to.

  176. That he was born as a babe.

  177. He had no former majesty that we should look on him,

  178. and no beauty that we should desire him.

  179. He was despised and rejected by men,

  180. even his own people.

  181. A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

  182. Even his friends turned their back on him.

  183. It is greatest hour of need.

  184. This very hour we're talking about.

  185. And as one from whom men hide their faces,

  186. he was despised and esteemed not.

  187. His people did not see him as the Messiah.

  188. The leaders of the nation refused to accept him as the Messiah,

  189. and sought to kill him, which they did.

  190. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

  191. Have you heard this during Christmas?

  192. Does this impact you as I read this?

  193. Do you hear the power of the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf?

  194. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows,

  195. yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God.

  196. Can you believe that God would turn his back on the Son?

  197. Can you believe that Christ would be faithful all those years,

  198. every single year to be faithful to the Father?

  199. The Word of God says this.

  200. He never said a word.

  201. That God didn't place in his mouth.

  202. He never did a thing that God didn't lead him to do.

  203. Always he was faithful.

  204. Always he was obedient.

  205. And yet,

  206. he was pierced for our transgressions.

  207. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  208. Upon him was a chastisement that brought us peace.

  209. Do you see what Christ knew?

  210. Christ knew that he would come as a babe,

  211. Emmanuel, God with us.

  212. He would live a life of obedience,

  213. in order that later he could go to a cross.

  214. This cross,

  215. this curse,

  216. is anyone who hangs on a tree.

  217. And Christ would be cursed,

  218. and placed on this tree.

  219. Why?

  220. To take our sorrows,

  221. and to take our iniquities upon himself.

  222. Why?

  223. That we might receive the gift of salvation.

  224. He was oppressed and afflicted,

  225. yet he opened not his mouth,

  226. like a lamb,

  227. even a Passover lamb,

  228. I will add.

  229. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,

  230. and like a sheep that's before its shearers is silent,

  231. he opened not his mouth.

  232. You know that's true about Christ?

  233. When he was flogged,

  234. he never opened his mouth.

  235. When he was ridiculed,

  236. he never opened his mouth.

  237. When they spat upon him,

  238. they never opened his mouth.

  239. When they laughed and mocked,

  240. and put this robe on him,

  241. he never opened his mouth.

  242. You know that he could have called down legions of angels,

  243. to come to his aid,

  244. and he didn't.

  245. You know why he didn't?

  246. Because he knew,

  247. that that's the reason he had come.

  248. He had come,

  249. that you and I,

  250. Christian,

  251. might know him.

  252. That he might redeem us,

  253. by his sacrifice,

  254. and his blood,

  255. on this very hour that he's praying about.

  256. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him,

  257. and to put him to grief.

  258. It was the will of the Father,

  259. to crush his very own son.

  260. And we look back at chapter 17,

  261. at this beautiful prayer,

  262. with that understanding,

  263. in the heart of Christ,

  264. we hear him pray intimately to the Father,

  265. and he says,

  266. Father,

  267. the hour has come.

  268. This hour that I've known about from creation.

  269. You know that Christ existed all throughout the Old Testament?

  270. All those long years,

  271. he's waited to the time when he would take on flesh,

  272. when he'd be born as a babe,

  273. in order to live 33 years,

  274. ultimately to go to the cross,

  275. and to suffer on our behalf.

  276. And now he says this,

  277. here's the request,

  278. here the request is for himself.

  279. And the request is this,

  280. Father, glorify your son.

  281. What does he mean?

  282. What does Jesus mean when he asks the Father to glorify him?

  283. It begs the question,

  284. doesn't it?

  285. Is it Christ already glorious?

  286. Wait a minute.

  287. This is Emmanuel God with us.

  288. This is the one who's come,

  289. and he's sinless.

  290. He's never committed a sin.

  291. Isn't he already glorious?

  292. Why does he ask God to glorify him?

  293. You know,

  294. there is a passage in Philippians

  295. where Paul addresses this truth,

  296. and I want us to look at it.

  297. So if you have your Bible,

  298. I would ask you to flip over to chapter 2

  299. of Philippians

  300. as we look at the way Paul articulated this.

  301. I would ask you to look starting at verse 6

  302. of Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  303. And I'm just going to read and make a few comments

  304. as I read down through several verses,

  305. and I want you to see it for yourself

  306. as we're in Philippians.

  307. I'm stalling a little bit for you to get there.

  308. Verse 6.

  309. Christ Jesus,

  310. though he was in the form of God,

  311. the form of God,

  312. he was God the Son.

  313. He was in the form of God,

  314. and when he was born,

  315. he was Emmanuel,

  316. God with us.

  317. He did not count equality with God

  318. a thing to be grasped,

  319. but he emptied himself

  320. by taking on the form of a servant,

  321. being born in the likeness of men.

  322. Christ took on flesh,

  323. and his glory was veiled in humanity.

  324. You know,

  325. when he took on flesh,

  326. he did that so he could commune with his people.

  327. It's a form of God

  328. in order that he might be able

  329. to stand face to face

  330. and commune with the disciples and others

  331. where he could interact.

  332. Because you know the Word of God declares

  333. in Exodus,

  334. when Moses asked to see his glory,

  335. you remember the response of the Father?

  336. No man can see my glory and live.

  337. You remember the story where Moses said,

  338. please, I desire to see your glory.

  339. He said,

  340. I'll allow you to see the hinder parts

  341. of my glory,

  342. the radiance of my glory.

  343. You can't see me face to face.

  344. And he sets him in the cliff to the rock,

  345. and he, in a sense,

  346. symbolically holds his hand

  347. over the eyes of Moses,

  348. and as he passes by,

  349. it's as if the stardust

  350. that trails behind him,

  351. Moses sees.

  352. Because God said,

  353. you can't see me and live.

  354. But Christ takes on humanity

  355. that he can engage in relationship

  356. with his people.

  357. And in so doing,

  358. he veils his glory.

  359. So am I saying that Christ was not glorious?

  360. I'm not saying that at all.

  361. Matter of fact,

  362. we get a glimpse of his glory,

  363. don't we,

  364. on the Mount of Transfiguration.

  365. You remember the story?

  366. Peter, James, and John

  367. go up with him on the Mount,

  368. and right before their eyes,

  369. he is transfigured.

  370. Everything about him was brilliant

  371. so that they had to hide their face.

  372. We get a little bit of a glimpse

  373. of who he really is

  374. in the glory of Christ.

  375. The same glory,

  376. verse 5 in our text,

  377. that he had with the Father

  378. before the world began.

  379. This glory,

  380. this radiance,

  381. this awe-inspiring light.

  382. Equal with the Father,

  383. yet veiled in humanity.

  384. We go on.

  385. He humbled himself,

  386. verse 8,

  387. becoming obedient

  388. to the point of death,

  389. even death on a cross.

  390. He became obedient

  391. with his eyes always pointed

  392. to the cross that he knew

  393. he would be nailed to.

  394. Why?

  395. For you and me,

  396. brothers and sisters.

  397. And we continue,

  398. therefore God has done what?

  399. Listen to this beautiful picture

  400. that Paul has

  401. of what happened

  402. when Christ died on the cross,

  403. of what happened

  404. when that hour was completed.

  405. Paul's looking backwards

  406. and he's saying this,

  407. God has highly exalted him

  408. and bestowed on him

  409. a name that is above every name.

  410. Does that sound glorious to you?

  411. A name that is above every name.

  412. You know that there's no other name

  413. in all of creation

  414. whereby a man might be saved?

  415. One name named Jesus.

  416. There's no greater name

  417. than that name,

  418. Jesus.

  419. It's by Jesus that we're bought.

  420. It's by Jesus that we come to know him

  421. as Lord and Savior.

  422. It's by Jesus that we receive salvation.

  423. There is no greater name.

  424. And we continue.

  425. And at that name,

  426. that greatest of all names,

  427. that Jesus,

  428. every knee should bow

  429. in heaven

  430. and on earth

  431. and under the earth

  432. and every tongue confess

  433. that what?

  434. The glorious Lord Jesus

  435. has been raised.

  436. That Jesus Christ is Lord.

  437. Do you think God was honored

  438. with his sacrifice on the cross?

  439. Do you think God celebrated

  440. his sacrifice?

  441. Well, the resurrection declares it.

  442. You know, the resurrection

  443. is as if God says,

  444. well done, my son.

  445. You've done it.

  446. You've accomplished

  447. what I sent you to do.

  448. I'm going to place you

  449. in the position

  450. of the highest authority.

  451. Every knee

  452. in all of creation,

  453. every animal,

  454. every created thing

  455. will bow their knee to you

  456. as Lord of all.

  457. You will receive the glory

  458. that you had with me

  459. before the earth

  460. was even created.

  461. Back to chapter 17.

  462. Father,

  463. the hour has come.

  464. Glorify your son.

  465. Why does he want the father

  466. to take him to this place

  467. of great suffering?

  468. Why does he want the father

  469. to strengthen him

  470. to accomplish the thing

  471. that he's come for?

  472. Here's ultimately

  473. why he wants it.

  474. Listen to what he says.

  475. Will you glorify your son,

  476. Father?

  477. In order that

  478. you might be glorified,

  479. that the son might glorify you.

  480. Ultimately,

  481. Jesus is saying,

  482. my greatest of all desires

  483. is that, Father,

  484. you be lifted up.

  485. You be magnified.

  486. You be glorified.

  487. Be glorified.

  488. Not me.

  489. Glorify me

  490. in such a way

  491. that you send me

  492. to the cross.

  493. You give me the strength

  494. to be faithful

  495. and you put me to death

  496. that my people

  497. might be redeemed.

  498. That you might receive

  499. the glory

  500. that you would provide

  501. a way

  502. that your people

  503. could receive salvation.

  504. Do you see it?

  505. Glorify your son.

  506. Why?

  507. That the son

  508. may glorify you.

  509. You know what his desire was?

  510. To bring glory to God.

  511. Brothers and sister,

  512. what is our desire?

  513. What is your greatest desire?

  514. Does this ring true

  515. for you as well?

  516. Do you find that

  517. in your life

  518. your greatest desire

  519. is that God

  520. might be glorified

  521. through your life?

  522. You know,

  523. it's very humbling

  524. to consider the truth here

  525. is that Christ

  526. was willing

  527. to go to the cross

  528. and be willing

  529. to surrender

  530. and sacrifice his life.

  531. Why?

  532. That God might be glorified.

  533. Brothers and sister,

  534. what are we willing to do

  535. that God might be glorified?

  536. Where do you find yourself today?

  537. What's true for you?

  538. How much do you sacrifice

  539. that he might be glorified?

  540. How much are you willing

  541. to endure

  542. that he might be glorified?

  543. I understand

  544. we can't be Christ

  545. and redemption

  546. doesn't come through us

  547. but isn't God worthy?

  548. Isn't he worthy

  549. of our life?

  550. Isn't he worthy

  551. of our sacrifice?

  552. Isn't he worthy

  553. that we would lay down

  554. our bodies

  555. as a living sacrifice,

  556. holy and acceptable to him?

  557. Isn't he worthy

  558. that we would set our mind

  559. on things above?

  560. Isn't he worthy

  561. that we would present

  562. our body

  563. as a living sacrifice,

  564. holy and acceptable to him,

  565. which is our reasonable

  566. expectation of worship?

  567. You know what it means

  568. to truly worship?

  569. It's not just to sing.

  570. You know what it means

  571. to worship?

  572. It's to bow the knee.

  573. You know what it means

  574. to bow the knee?

  575. It says,

  576. I see you as my Lord.

  577. I choose to do

  578. whatever you lead me to do.

  579. Lord, give me strength

  580. to be faithful to you.

  581. You know that's the call

  582. to us Christians?

  583. It's a call

  584. to faithfulness.

  585. It's a call

  586. to his glory.

  587. It's a call

  588. to surrender.

  589. It's a call

  590. to sacrifice.

  591. That's the high call

  592. of God in Christ Jesus.

  593. That's the high call

  594. for you and me.

  595. You know what's true?

  596. We can't do it on our own.

  597. You and I

  598. on our own willpower

  599. will fail every time.

  600. But you know what God says?

  601. Greater is he

  602. that is in you

  603. than he that is in the world.

  604. There is a need.

  605. It's the need

  606. for the Holy Spirit.

  607. The supernatural power

  608. of the Holy Spirit

  609. can produce his fruit

  610. in your life

  611. and my life.

  612. When we yield to him

  613. and say,

  614. here I am,

  615. whatever you desire,

  616. I'm willing.

  617. You give me strength

  618. to do what I'm not able

  619. to do

  620. that you might be glorified.

  621. You know he's called us

  622. to worship him?

  623. And do you realize

  624. that the sacrifice

  625. of Christ

  626. was the greatest expression

  627. of worship?

  628. That he'd be willing

  629. to lay down his life?

  630. You know,

  631. the Word of God

  632. says this,

  633. as greater love

  634. has no man than this

  635. that he'd be willing

  636. to lay down his life

  637. for his friend.

  638. Are we church

  639. willing to lay down

  640. our lives for the kingdom?

  641. I don't sugarcoat this.

  642. I just speak

  643. the Word of God.

  644. The Word of God

  645. calls us

  646. to love him

  647. in such a way

  648. that we'd be willing

  649. to lay down our life

  650. for the kingdom

  651. and for the king of kings.

  652. You know,

  653. the martyrs

  654. counted it

  655. a privilege

  656. to die

  657. for the name of Christ.

  658. The disciples

  659. counted it

  660. a privilege

  661. to suffer

  662. for the name

  663. of Jesus.

  664. How about us?

  665. I continue.

  666. I want you to see

  667. this beautiful,

  668. beautiful thing.

  669. He talks about

  670. eternal life.

  671. And I see

  672. several things

  673. about eternal life

  674. here

  675. that I want us

  676. to see.

  677. It's powerful

  678. what he says.

  679. Read again

  680. from beginning.

  681. He says,

  682. Father,

  683. the hour has come.

  684. Glorify your Son

  685. that the Son

  686. may glorify you

  687. since you have

  688. given him authority

  689. to give

  690. eternal life.

  691. You have given

  692. him,

  693. Jesus,

  694. authority

  695. to give

  696. eternal life.

  697. You know

  698. what's interesting here?

  699. Nowhere in this passage

  700. does it talk

  701. about earning

  702. eternal life?

  703. You know

  704. what it talks

  705. about?

  706. It talks

  707. about giving

  708. eternal life.

  709. You know

  710. that lines

  711. up with

  712. the rest

  713. of the scriptures

  714. very well.

  715. Even when

  716. we were dead

  717. in our trespasses

  718. and sins,

  719. God made

  720. us alive.

  721. You know

  722. what?

  723. He initiated

  724. and he

  725. accomplished.

  726. we didn't

  727. do anything

  728. except perceive

  729. what he

  730. started

  731. and accomplished.

  732. And here

  733. we see

  734. that the

  735. Father

  736. who has

  737. all authority

  738. has given

  739. that authority

  740. to the Son.

  741. He is placed

  742. into the position

  743. of authority

  744. and the Son

  745. can give

  746. eternal life

  747. to whom he will.

  748. And the

  749. scripture

  750. shows us here

  751. even in this

  752. very prayer

  753. who receives

  754. eternal life.

  755. it tells

  756. us.

  757. There is a

  758. qualifier

  759. here.

  760. I want

  761. you to

  762. see.

  763. Who is it

  764. Lord Jesus

  765. that you will

  766. give eternal

  767. life to?

  768. And here

  769. it is

  770. to all

  771. whom you

  772. have given

  773. him.

  774. Hear the

  775. prayer.

  776. Father

  777. the hour

  778. has come

  779. glorify your

  780. Son that

  781. your Son

  782. may glorify

  783. you.

  784. Since

  785. you have

  786. given

  787. him

  788. authority

  789. to give

  790. eternal

  791. life to

  792. the ones

  793. that you

  794. gave him

  795. out of

  796. the world.

  797. Look at

  798. the phrase

  799. in verse

  800. 6.

  801. The people

  802. whom you

  803. gave me.

  804. And in

  805. verse 9

  806. I am not

  807. praying for

  808. them that

  809. is the

  810. world.

  811. I am

  812. praying for

  813. those whom

  814. you have

  815. given me

  816. out of

  817. the world

  818. for they

  819. are yours.

  820. It is

  821. interesting

  822. and maybe

  823. hard for

  824. our ears

  825. to swallow

  826. but it is

  827. beautiful

  828. when we

  829. see it

  830. in scripture.

  831. we hear

  832. the ring

  833. of it

  834. when we

  835. read

  836. Revelation

  837. it says

  838. the Lamb's

  839. book of

  840. life.

  841. It is

  842. talking about

  843. names being

  844. written in

  845. the Lamb's

  846. book of

  847. life.

  848. You know

  849. the book

  850. of Romans

  851. gives us

  852. a clear

  853. picture.

  854. You know

  855. there is

  856. in the

  857. belief of

  858. some

  859. everybody

  860. that was

  861. a part

  862. of the

  863. nation

  864. of Israel

  865. in the

  866. Old

  867. Testament

  868. days

  869. some

  870. believe

  871. that

  872. every

  873. one

  874. of

  875. them

  876. are

  877. going

  878. to

  879. be

  880. saved.

  881. That

  882. every

  883. one

  884. of them

  885. are going

  886. to receive

  887. eternal

  888. life.

  889. That

  890. all

  891. Israel

  892. is going

  893. to be

  894. in heaven.

  895. You know

  896. that's not

  897. what the

  898. word of

  899. God says?

  900. So I

  901. read out

  902. of Romans

  903. briefly

  904. because I

  905. want us

  906. to hear

  907. the

  908. beautiful

  909. picture

  910. of who

  911. Christ

  912. died

  913. for.

  914. And so

  915. I ask

  916. the question

  917. did Christ

  918. die for

  919. everyone?

  920. Will all

  921. people be

  922. saved?

  923. No.

  924. Do we

  925. have a

  926. choice?

  927. Yes,

  928. of course.

  929. Every

  930. person

  931. that's

  932. ever

  933. been

  934. born

  935. has

  936. a

  937. choice

  938. whether

  939. they

  940. choose

  941. to

  942. believe

  943. or

  944. not.

  945. But the

  946. word of

  947. God

  948. says not

  949. everyone

  950. will

  951. believe.

  952. chapter 9

  953. verse 6

  954. through 8

  955. says this,

  956. For not all

  957. who were

  958. descended from

  959. Israel belong

  960. to Israel.

  961. Listen to

  962. that.

  963. Not all

  964. who are

  965. ethnic

  966. Jews belong

  967. to Israel.

  968. Wait a minute.

  969. Wait a minute.

  970. Isn't that by

  971. definition

  972. correct?

  973. He's speaking

  974. spiritually here.

  975. Not all

  976. who were

  977. descended from

  978. Israel belong

  979. to Israel.

  980. Not all

  981. who are

  982. children of

  983. Abraham.

  984. Not all

  985. are children

  986. of Abraham

  987. because they

  988. are offspring.

  989. Listen at

  990. the message

  991. that the

  992. word says

  993. here.

  994. Just because

  995. you're

  996. ethnically

  997. Jew doesn't

  998. mean you're

  999. truly a

  1000. child of

  1001. Abraham because

  1002. Abraham is

  1003. the man of

  1004. faith and

  1005. only those

  1006. who have

  1007. faith are

  1008. considered part

  1009. of the

  1010. family of

  1011. Abraham.

  1012. Spiritually

  1013. speaking.

  1014. It says

  1015. this,

  1016. but through

  1017. Isaac shall

  1018. your offspring

  1019. be named.

  1020. This means

  1021. that it is

  1022. not the

  1023. children of

  1024. the flesh

  1025. who are

  1026. children of

  1027. God,

  1028. but the

  1029. children of

  1030. the promise

  1031. are counted

  1032. as offspring.

  1033. Hear it again

  1034. out of the book

  1035. of Isaiah.

  1036. And Paul,

  1037. when he's

  1038. writing his

  1039. letter to the

  1040. Romans,

  1041. he quotes

  1042. Isaiah and

  1043. Isaiah says

  1044. this,

  1045. Isaiah cries

  1046. out concerning

  1047. Israel,

  1048. though the

  1049. number of the

  1050. sons of

  1051. Israel be

  1052. as the

  1053. sand of

  1054. the sea.

  1055. Listen,

  1056. though the

  1057. ethnic Jews

  1058. be many in

  1059. number,

  1060. here's what he

  1061. says,

  1062. only a remnant

  1063. will be

  1064. saved.

  1065. Only a

  1066. remnant.

  1067. Does that

  1068. surprise you?

  1069. Does it

  1070. surprise you

  1071. that not

  1072. everyone will

  1073. be saved?

  1074. You know,

  1075. Christ didn't

  1076. come to save

  1077. every single

  1078. person that's

  1079. ever been

  1080. born.

  1081. You know who

  1082. he came to

  1083. save?

  1084. The ones

  1085. that the

  1086. father had

  1087. given him.

  1088. Well,

  1089. who did you

  1090. give him,

  1091. father?

  1092. Who did you

  1093. give Christ?

  1094. Who did he

  1095. come to die

  1096. for?

  1097. Chapter 11

  1098. of Romans

  1099. gives us a

  1100. real clear

  1101. picture.

  1102. Here it

  1103. is.

  1104. And so

  1105. Paul,

  1106. understanding

  1107. the

  1108. defensiveness

  1109. of the

  1110. Jews,

  1111. he says

  1112. this,

  1113. I ask

  1114. then,

  1115. Paul being

  1116. a Jew

  1117. himself,

  1118. then has

  1119. God rejected

  1120. his people?

  1121. verse 2

  1122. says this,

  1123. God has

  1124. not rejected

  1125. his people

  1126. whom he

  1127. foreknew.

  1128. So I

  1129. want to tie

  1130. two things

  1131. together for

  1132. you.

  1133. This concept

  1134. of God

  1135. foreknowing.

  1136. Have you

  1137. heard it

  1138. before?

  1139. That God

  1140. foreknew

  1141. them.

  1142. What does

  1143. it mean

  1144. to foreknew?

  1145. Fore means

  1146. before.

  1147. To know

  1148. is not

  1149. just a

  1150. cognitive

  1151. understanding.

  1152. to know

  1153. is a

  1154. word that

  1155. has a

  1156. deeper

  1157. meaning

  1158. in the

  1159. scriptures.

  1160. You

  1161. remember

  1162. the

  1163. passage

  1164. on the

  1165. Sermon

  1166. on the

  1167. Mount

  1168. when Christ

  1169. said,

  1170. many in

  1171. that day

  1172. will say

  1173. to me,

  1174. Lord,

  1175. Lord,

  1176. have we

  1177. not

  1178. prophesied

  1179. in your

  1180. name?

  1181. Have we

  1182. not done

  1183. many works

  1184. in your

  1185. name?

  1186. And Christ

  1187. will say,

  1188. depart from

  1189. me for I

  1190. never knew

  1191. you.

  1192. What does

  1193. he mean?

  1194. That he

  1195. didn't know

  1196. who they

  1197. were,

  1198. didn't know

  1199. their names,

  1200. never seen

  1201. them before,

  1202. didn't recognize

  1203. them?

  1204. That's not

  1205. what he

  1206. means.

  1207. I never

  1208. knew you.

  1209. I never

  1210. had

  1211. relationship

  1212. with you.

  1213. I was

  1214. never

  1215. united

  1216. with you.

  1217. You know

  1218. that if

  1219. we're not

  1220. united with

  1221. Christ,

  1222. we won't

  1223. be in

  1224. heaven.

  1225. Only those

  1226. who are

  1227. united

  1228. through the

  1229. blood of

  1230. Christ,

  1231. through the

  1232. sacrifice of

  1233. Christ,

  1234. through the

  1235. salvation

  1236. that he

  1237. offered,

  1238. through

  1239. faith,

  1240. you know

  1241. that apart

  1242. from faith

  1243. we'll never

  1244. be saved?

  1245. Apart from

  1246. trusting in

  1247. the work of

  1248. Christ on

  1249. the cross

  1250. will never

  1251. be saved.

  1252. And you

  1253. know who

  1254. is going

  1255. to trust

  1256. in this

  1257. work?

  1258. Here it

  1259. is.

  1260. So God

  1261. has not

  1262. rejected his

  1263. people whom

  1264. he foreknew.

  1265. There is a

  1266. remnant

  1267. chosen by

  1268. what?

  1269. By grace.

  1270. There is a

  1271. remnant

  1272. chosen by

  1273. God

  1274. through grace.

  1275. There is a

  1276. remnant

  1277. chosen by

  1278. grace.

  1279. It is by

  1280. grace of

  1281. God that

  1282. we receive

  1283. salvation.

  1284. You know

  1285. that in

  1286. chapter 17

  1287. again, it

  1288. defines really

  1289. well what

  1290. eternal life

  1291. is?

  1292. Look at it

  1293. with me.

  1294. In verse

  1295. 3.

  1296. Verse 2

  1297. said that

  1298. Christ can

  1299. give eternal

  1300. life to

  1301. those whom

  1302. God had

  1303. given him.

  1304. And this

  1305. is eternal

  1306. life.

  1307. What is it?

  1308. That they

  1309. know you,

  1310. the only true

  1311. God in

  1312. Jesus Christ.

  1313. You know

  1314. that unless

  1315. we're related

  1316. to the

  1317. Father,

  1318. unless we're

  1319. related to

  1320. the Son,

  1321. unless we

  1322. know them

  1323. relationally,

  1324. we'll never

  1325. be in

  1326. heaven.

  1327. And so

  1328. brothers and

  1329. sisters,

  1330. I ask you

  1331. this,

  1332. do you

  1333. know him

  1334. in that

  1335. way?

  1336. Do you

  1337. have eternal

  1338. life?

  1339. Has he

  1340. given eternal

  1341. life to you?

  1342. Have you

  1343. come to know

  1344. him?

  1345. Have you

  1346. recognized

  1347. there's

  1348. nothing you

  1349. can do

  1350. in your

  1351. own ability?

  1352. There's no

  1353. works you

  1354. can do,

  1355. there's no

  1356. good things

  1357. you can do,

  1358. there's no

  1359. task you

  1360. can do

  1361. that's going

  1362. to earn

  1363. salvation.

  1364. You know

  1365. that salvation

  1366. is not

  1367. earned,

  1368. it's given?

  1369. And you

  1370. know what

  1371. is the

  1372. means by

  1373. which it's

  1374. given?

  1375. To those

  1376. who believe,

  1377. to those

  1378. who bow

  1379. their knee,

  1380. to those

  1381. who trust

  1382. in Christ,

  1383. to those

  1384. who recognize

  1385. that his

  1386. death on

  1387. the cross

  1388. was in

  1389. payment,

  1390. a

  1391. substitutionary

  1392. death on

  1393. our behalf.

  1394. For those

  1395. who bow

  1396. their knee

  1397. and say,

  1398. God,

  1399. I don't

  1400. have anything

  1401. to offer.

  1402. I recognize

  1403. that I'm

  1404. not worthy,

  1405. I recognize

  1406. that I'm

  1407. a sinner,

  1408. but Lord,

  1409. you have

  1410. sent one

  1411. to die

  1412. on my

  1413. behalf.

  1414. Your word

  1415. says that

  1416. Christ died

  1417. that I

  1418. might live.

  1419. I trust

  1420. in the

  1421. work of

  1422. Christ in

  1423. order that

  1424. I might

  1425. live.

  1426. Notice

  1427. in chapter

  1428. 17 here

  1429. this prayer,

  1430. this is

  1431. eternal

  1432. life,

  1433. that they

  1434. would know

  1435. you,

  1436. Father,

  1437. the only

  1438. true God.

  1439. Do you

  1440. understand

  1441. that Christ

  1442. is saying

  1443. to them,

  1444. I see

  1445. the result

  1446. of this

  1447. hour.

  1448. As I

  1449. walk this

  1450. walk that

  1451. you've given

  1452. me to walk

  1453. and I

  1454. am elevated

  1455. on this

  1456. tree,

  1457. on this

  1458. cross,

  1459. and I

  1460. die this

  1461. death,

  1462. that Father,

  1463. because you're

  1464. true to your

  1465. word,

  1466. that all

  1467. of those

  1468. whom you've

  1469. given me

  1470. will receive

  1471. salvation.

  1472. They will

  1473. know you

  1474. and they

  1475. will know

  1476. me.

  1477. And now,

  1478. Father,

  1479. glorify me

  1480. in your

  1481. own presence.

  1482. Isn't that

  1483. interesting?

  1484. He says,

  1485. in your own

  1486. presence.

  1487. What is he

  1488. saying?

  1489. Lord,

  1490. I know I'm

  1491. at the door

  1492. of death.

  1493. I know I'm

  1494. at the door

  1495. of the cross.

  1496. I know that

  1497. this very night

  1498. I'm going to

  1499. be arrested.

  1500. I know that

  1501. I'm going to

  1502. be rejected.

  1503. I'm going to

  1504. be betrayed.

  1505. I'm going to

  1506. be on my

  1507. own.

  1508. I'm going to

  1509. be unfairly

  1510. tried.

  1511. I'm going to

  1512. be flogged

  1513. almost to

  1514. death and

  1515. I'm going to

  1516. be taken

  1517. to a

  1518. hill and

  1519. I'm going

  1520. to be

  1521. elevated

  1522. on the

  1523. tree to

  1524. die this

  1525. death.

  1526. The word

  1527. of God

  1528. says that

  1529. Christ,

  1530. who knew

  1531. no sin,

  1532. died and

  1533. took on our

  1534. sin in order

  1535. that we might

  1536. receive his

  1537. righteousness.

  1538. It's this

  1539. great exchange.

  1540. We were the

  1541. ones that should

  1542. have been on

  1543. the cross.

  1544. We were the

  1545. ones that are

  1546. guilty and

  1547. what did

  1548. Christ do?

  1549. He lived for

  1550. this very hour

  1551. that he would

  1552. say,

  1553. he's mine.

  1554. Yes,

  1555. he's guilty,

  1556. but I choose

  1557. to go to the

  1558. cross on his

  1559. behalf and

  1560. father,

  1561. would you take

  1562. my righteousness

  1563. and would you

  1564. bestow my

  1565. righteousness on

  1566. him and I

  1567. will go to the

  1568. cross for him

  1569. so he didn't

  1570. have to,

  1571. that he might

  1572. know you,

  1573. that you

  1574. might take

  1575. him as a

  1576. son.

  1577. Brothers and

  1578. sisters,

  1579. do you all

  1580. realize we've

  1581. been adopted

  1582. as sons and

  1583. daughters of

  1584. the almighty

  1585. glorious God?

  1586. And there's

  1587. coming a day

  1588. if we're truly

  1589. in the kingdom

  1590. where we'll see

  1591. him face to

  1592. face.

  1593. No longer

  1594. will he veil

  1595. his glory.

  1596. You know what

  1597. he's going to

  1598. do?

  1599. He's going to

  1600. reveal his glory

  1601. to all of us.

  1602. When we show up

  1603. in the heavenly

  1604. kingdom,

  1605. you know what we're

  1606. going to see?

  1607. We're going to

  1608. see something we

  1609. have no idea

  1610. how grand and

  1611. glorious it is.

  1612. You know,

  1613. I think the

  1614. shepherds,

  1615. when they were

  1616. abiding in the

  1617. fields,

  1618. when Christ

  1619. was born,

  1620. I think they

  1621. got a little

  1622. glimpse of the

  1623. glory of the

  1624. worship.

  1625. When all the

  1626. angels were

  1627. worshiping,

  1628. they were like,

  1629. what is going

  1630. on?

  1631. So moved

  1632. they were,

  1633. they left

  1634. their sheep

  1635. and they went

  1636. to find where

  1637. this Messiah

  1638. was.

  1639. They got a

  1640. little glimpse.

  1641. The Mount

  1642. of Transfiguration,

  1643. they got a

  1644. little glimpse.

  1645. Have you

  1646. gotten a

  1647. glimpse of

  1648. the glory

  1649. of God?

  1650. Do you

  1651. have any

  1652. idea of

  1653. how grand

  1654. and awesome

  1655. it's going

  1656. to be to

  1657. step into

  1658. eternity and

  1659. be able to

  1660. worship him

  1661. and love him

  1662. and speak to

  1663. him and have

  1664. fellowship with

  1665. him face to

  1666. face?

  1667. Let's pray.

  1668. Amen.

  1669. Amen.

  1670. Amen.

  1671. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. Amen.

  1676. Amen.

  1677. Amen.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Amen.

  1683. Amen.

  1684. Amen.

  1685. Amen.

  1686. Father, how

  1687. powerful is

  1688. your word

  1689. and how

  1690. great is

  1691. your gift

  1692. that we

  1693. could receive

  1694. eternal life.

  1695. That Lord

  1696. Jesus, you

  1697. would open

  1698. our eyes

  1699. to see, you

  1700. would stir

  1701. our hearts

  1702. to recognize

  1703. our own sin

  1704. and our need

  1705. for a savior.

  1706. Our need

  1707. for someone

  1708. to go to

  1709. the cross

  1710. on our behalf

  1711. that Lord,

  1712. we're not

  1713. sinless.

  1714. instead, we're

  1715. hopeless in

  1716. need of

  1717. salvation.

  1718. And so, Lord,

  1719. I just thank you

  1720. that Christ, my

  1721. Lord, my Savior,

  1722. was willing to go

  1723. to the cross

  1724. that we might

  1725. know you,

  1726. that we might

  1727. be in

  1728. relationship with

  1729. you, that we

  1730. might be adopted,

  1731. we might be

  1732. heirs,

  1733. and we might

  1734. have the hope

  1735. of heaven.

  1736. God, I pray

  1737. that you would

  1738. stir our heart

  1739. to be willing

  1740. to live for

  1741. you and not

  1742. live for these

  1743. counterfeit glories

  1744. of this world

  1745. that are nothing

  1746. in comparison

  1747. to how great

  1748. you are.

  1749. They're nothing.

  1750. God, help us

  1751. to fix our eyes

  1752. on Jesus,

  1753. the author

  1754. and perfecter

  1755. of our faith,

  1756. the one who

  1757. has accomplished

  1758. salvation that

  1759. we might live.

  1760. Help us to

  1761. present our bodies

  1762. as a living

  1763. sacrifice,

  1764. holy and

  1765. acceptable to

  1766. you.

  1767. God,

  1768. God,

  1769. God,

  1770. God,

  1771. God,

  1772. God,

  1773. God,

  1774. God,

  1775. God,

  1776. God,

  1777. God,

  1778. God,

  1779. help us

  1780. to be willing

  1781. to be martyrs,

  1782. to be willing

  1783. to suffer ridicule,

  1784. to be willing

  1785. to suffer even

  1786. death in our

  1787. desire to be

  1788. faithful to you

  1789. because you're

  1790. worthy of praise.

  1791. We thank you

  1792. for this morning.

  1793. We praise you

  1794. in Christ's name.

  1795. Amen.
