  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to John chapter 18.

    John 18 chapter mention

  2. We have made our way to the 18th chapter of John,

  3. and we are going to cover verses 1 through 27 this morning.

  4. So John 18, verses 1 through 27.

    John 18:1–27

  5. As I always encourage you, please have a Bible open.

  6. We're going to look with our own eyes at God's Word this morning

  7. as we walk through this passage together.

  8. So when you found it, John 18, verses 1 through 27,

    John 18:1–27

  9. if you would please stand in honor of the reading of God's Word.

  10. When Jesus had spoken these words,

  11. he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron,

  12. where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.

  13. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place.

  14. For Jesus often met there with his disciples.

  15. So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees,

  16. went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

  17. And then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him,

  18. came forward and said to them,

  19. Whom do you seek?

  20. They answered him,

  21. Jesus of Nazareth.

  22. Jesus said to them,

  23. I am he.

  24. Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

  25. When Jesus said to them,

  26. I am he,

  27. they drew back and fell to the ground.

  28. So he asked them again,

  29. Whom do you seek?

  30. And they said,

  31. Jesus of Nazareth.

  32. Jesus answered,

  33. I told you that I am he.

  34. So if you seek me,

  35. let these men go.

  36. This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken.

  37. Of those whom you gave me,

  38. I have not lost one.

  39. Then Simon Peter,

  40. having a sword,

  41. drew it

  42. and struck the high priest's servant

  43. and cut off his right ear.

  44. The servant's name was Malchus.

  45. So Jesus said to Peter,

  46. Put your sword into its sheath.

  47. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?

  48. So the band of soldiers and their captain

  49. and the officers of the Jews

  50. arrested Jesus and bound him.

  51. First they led him to Annas,

  52. for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,

  53. who was high priest that year.

  54. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews

  55. that it would be expedient

  56. that one man should die for the people.

  57. Simon Peter followed Jesus

  58. and so did another disciple.

  59. Since that disciple was known to the high priest,

  60. he entered with Jesus

  61. into the courtyard of the high priest,

  62. but Peter stood outside at the door.

  63. So the other disciple,

  64. who was known to the high priest,

  65. went out and spoke to the servant girl

  66. who kept watch at the door

  67. and brought Peter in.

  68. The servant girl at the door said to Peter,

  69. You also are not one of this man's disciples,

  70. are you?

  71. He said,

  72. I am not.

  73. Now the servants and officers

  74. had made a charcoal fire

  75. because it was cold

  76. and they were standing and warming themselves.

  77. Peter also was with them,

  78. standing and warming himself.

  79. The high priest then questioned Jesus

  80. about his disciples and his teaching.

  81. Jesus answered him,

  82. I have spoken openly to the world.

  83. I have always taught in synagogues

  84. and in the temple

  85. where all Jews come together.

  86. I have said nothing in secret.

  87. Why do you ask me?

  88. Ask those who have heard me

  89. what I said to them.

  90. They know what I said.

  91. When he had said these things,

  92. one of the officers standing by

  93. struck Jesus with his hand,

  94. saying,

  95. Is that how you answer the high priest?

  96. Jesus answered him,

  97. If what I said is wrong,

  98. bear witness about the wrong.

  99. But if what I said is right,

  100. then why do you strike me?

  101. Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas,

  102. the high priest.

  103. Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself,

  104. so they said to him,

  105. You also are not one of his disciples,

  106. are you?

  107. He denied it and said,

  108. I am not.

  109. One of the servants of the high priest,

  110. a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,

  111. asked,

  112. Did I not see you in the garden with him?

  113. Peter again denied it,

  114. and at once the rooster crowed.

  115. Grass withers and flower fades,

  116. but the word of our Lord endures forever.

  117. Let's pray.

  118. Lord,

  119. we thank you for the truth of your word,

  120. and we pray as Jesus has just prayed in John 17,

  121. would you sanctify us in the truth.

  122. Your word is truth.

  123. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  124. Amen.

  125. You may be seated.

  126. Amen.

  127. About every six months,

  128. we enter into what is called eclipse season.

  129. I found myself reading about this this week.

  130. We're actually just a few weeks away from an eclipse season,

  131. March 24th and 25th.

  132. I know you have your calendars marked for this.

  133. There will be a partial lunar eclipse,

  134. called a penumbral eclipse,

  135. where just part of the moon's brightness

  136. will be partially blocked by the earth's shadow.

  137. The earth, as it orbits and rotates,

  138. it gets in the way of the sun's direct light

  139. from directly hitting, reaching, and reflecting

  140. off of the surface of the moon.

  141. And if it's a total eclipse,

  142. what happens is that the earth,

  143. it completely blocks direct sunlight from hitting the moon.

  144. It moves right in the way.

  145. And for a moment,

  146. but only for a moment,

  147. that moon that normally shines

  148. and lights up the night sky

  149. is partially darkened,

  150. but only partially,

  151. because even in this unique moment

  152. of unusual darkness,

  153. the light still makes its way through.

  154. It's still visible.

  155. The contrast is still seen.

  156. Sometimes the moon is a reddish color

  157. instead of bright white,

  158. but it's still there.

  159. It's still visible.

  160. It's still shining forth in the darkness.

  161. The darkness cannot overpower the light.

  162. As we enter into this final section

  163. of John's gospel this morning,

  164. I want to remind you of what John told us

  165. all the way back in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  166. He told us how this story would go.

  167. Do you remember what he said?

  168. The light shines in the darkness,

  169. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  170. You can take that phrase

  171. and slap it right across chapters 18 through 21,

  172. because what we see here

  173. is a moment of intense,

  174. unusual darkness.

  175. And yet,

  176. as much as the earth and the world

  177. and the sinful nature of the world

  178. attempts to block out the light

  179. of the Son of God,

  180. the light shines in the darkness,

  181. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  182. In fact, what we see in this passage

  183. so clearly is the sharp contrast

  184. between light and darkness.

  185. We see, as we've been singing about

  186. all morning long,

  187. the depth of our dark sin

  188. and the height of His holiness.

  189. What I want you to see

  190. as we walk through this passage together

  191. this morning is two contrasts

  192. between the darkness and the light

  193. this morning.

  194. This will be our outline

  195. if you're a note taker,

  196. help you follow along.

  197. We're going to see two contrasts

  198. between the darkness

  199. and the light this morning.

  200. The first is here in verses 1 through 11.

  201. Look there with me.

  202. It's the contrast between Judas and Jesus.

  203. This is a contrast between

  204. betrayal and obedience.

  205. Verse 1 tells us that

  206. when Jesus had finished speaking,

  207. probably referring to the whole

  208. upper room discourse

  209. and His priestly prayer

  210. in chapters 13 through 17,

  211. when He finished these words,

  212. He went out with His disciples

  213. across the brook Kidron

  214. to a garden.

  215. I want you to try as best as you can

  216. to picture this scene with me.

  217. It was nighttime.

  218. It was dark.

  219. Here on the night before the Passover,

  220. it would have been a full moon.

  221. And you can picture

  222. kind of an eerie scene.

  223. It has all the characteristics

  224. of the beginning of a horror movie.

  225. It was a dark, quiet, moonlit night.

  226. And John tells us that

  227. Jesus takes His disciples

  228. across the brook Kidron.

  229. The brook of Kidron

  230. was actually a wadi,

  231. which means that typically

  232. year-round it's dry,

  233. except for after an intense rain

  234. when it pulls up with water,

  235. much like a lot of our property

  236. here in the Lowcountry, right?

  237. Typically dry,

  238. except for after a heavy rain

  239. like last night.

  240. And this brook,

  241. it ran through the Kidron Valley.

  242. It separated the Temple Mount

  243. on one side

  244. from the Mount of Olives

  245. on the other.

  246. And as you imagine this,

  247. you can imagine the Mount of Olives

  248. would be covered with olive trees

  249. sprawling across the hill.

  250. And Jesus had apparently found

  251. in there a comfortable,

  252. familiar meeting place

  253. where He could engage

  254. and interact and teach

  255. and meet with His disciples.

  256. And maybe you have a place like this.

  257. Some of you know,

  258. every now and then,

  259. sometimes, usually on a Monday,

  260. whenever I feel particularly overwhelmed

  261. or burdened or stressed

  262. or worn out,

  263. I will walk right out here

  264. past the yard

  265. into the trees

  266. of the Francis Marion Forest

  267. and walk as far back

  268. as I can get

  269. until I feel like

  270. I am completely alone.

  271. And there,

  272. I've done it often enough now

  273. where I'm familiar

  274. with some of the areas.

  275. I have a couple of places

  276. that to me

  277. have become meeting places,

  278. holy places of prayer

  279. where I can go

  280. and speak

  281. and interact

  282. with the Lord.

  283. Verse 2 says that Jesus,

  284. here,

  285. He went across the brook Kidron

  286. to His meeting place

  287. where He often met

  288. with His disciples.

  289. And the three other gospel writers,

  290. Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  291. they fill us in

  292. on what's just happened

  293. just moments before this

  294. as Jesus went out

  295. and prayed

  296. in the Garden of Gethsemane

  297. praying that

  298. if it be at all possible

  299. that this cup

  300. might pass from Him.

  301. You remember,

  302. He's agonizing

  303. over this coming moment.

  304. He's sweating drops of blood

  305. as He met with God

  306. in prayer.

  307. And do you remember

  308. how He rose

  309. and how He finished that prayer?

  310. Yet not my will,

  311. but Yours be done.

  312. And as He rises

  313. from His prayer,

  314. as He resolves

  315. to perfectly obey

  316. the will of God,

  317. to fulfill this plan of God

  318. to a T,

  319. John fills us in

  320. on what Judas,

  321. is up to.

  322. And I want you to notice here

  323. the contrast

  324. that John is trying

  325. to lay out for us.

  326. Jesus is resolved

  327. to obey

  328. to the point of death.

  329. He is willing to

  330. pay the price

  331. of His own life

  332. for obedience

  333. to the Father's plan.

  334. But here,

  335. Judas betrays Him

  336. for just 30 pieces of silver,

  337. according to Matthew.

  338. And this is a contrast

  339. of rebellion against God

  340. as Judas rebels

  341. and perfect submission

  342. to God

  343. as Jesus rises

  344. to obey.

  345. Judas, of course,

  346. he knew the place

  347. where Jesus would be.

  348. He had met there

  349. with Him many times before.

  350. You can only imagine

  351. the sweetness

  352. of those meetings,

  353. of that personal time

  354. with Jesus

  355. as Jesus often led Him

  356. there to the garden

  357. to meet.

  358. But now,

  359. verse 3 says,

  360. Judas leads

  361. a band of soldiers

  362. and some officers

  363. from the chief priests

  364. and the Pharisees

  365. with lanterns

  366. and torches

  367. and weapons.

  368. Jesus returns

  369. to that familiar

  370. meeting place.

  371. I'm not sure

  372. how you picture

  373. this scene in your mind

  374. or if you've ever seen

  375. a dramatization

  376. of this moment,

  377. but anytime

  378. I tend to imagine it,

  379. usually there's just

  380. a handful of men

  381. there to arrest Jesus.

  382. In fact,

  383. I was curious

  384. and so I went back

  385. and I re-watched

  386. the scene

  387. from The Passion

  388. of the Christ.

  389. Have you ever seen

  390. that movie,

  391. The Passion of the Christ?

  392. I re-watched the scene

  393. where Jesus was arrested

  394. and parts were moving,

  395. it was going kind of fast,

  396. but I could only count

  397. maybe as many as five men

  398. in the scene

  399. coming to arrest Jesus.

  400. Certainly no more

  401. than ten men

  402. were there.

  403. And that's where

  404. some dramatizations

  405. like that

  406. can be a little

  407. unhelpful for us.

  408. And my apologies

  409. to Mel Gibson,

  410. right,

  411. but as I studied

  412. this text,

  413. this week,

  414. I was reminded

  415. that these two groups

  416. of people,

  417. the band of soldiers

  418. and the officers,

  419. would likely have added

  420. up to approximately

  421. 1,000 men.

  422. The band of soldiers

  423. is a Roman detachment,

  424. which in and of itself,

  425. by the strictest definition

  426. of the term,

  427. is 1,000 men.

  428. Typically,

  429. they didn't roll

  430. with that many men.

  431. It's normally

  432. approximately

  433. six to 700 individuals.

  434. But then you add

  435. the Jewish officials

  436. from both the Sadducees

  437. and the Pharisees.

  438. These were the temple police.

  439. You add these two groups together

  440. and the best estimates

  441. are that there are

  442. about 1,000 men

  443. gathered there together,

  444. all with their torches

  445. and their weapons

  446. coming to arrest

  447. one man.

  448. Jews and Romans together.

  449. This is an image,

  450. isn't it,

  451. of the entire world

  452. banding together

  453. against this one man.

  454. It's just as the psalmist

  455. said in Psalm chapter 2,

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  456. isn't it?

  457. Why do the nations rage

  458. and the peoples plot in vain?

  459. The kings of the earth

  460. set themselves

  461. and the rulers

  462. take counsel together

  463. against the Lord

  464. and His anointed.

  465. And here in verse 4,

  466. John says,

  467. Jesus,

  468. knowing all that would happen

  469. to Him,

  470. came forward

  471. and said to them,

  472. Whom do you seek?

  473. They replied,

  474. Jesus of Nazareth.

  475. So Jesus simply said to them,

  476. I am He.

  477. I am He.

  478. Just two words in the Greek,

  479. ego, a, me.

  480. I am He.

  481. And if you've listened closely

  482. as we've walked through

  483. the Gospel of John,

  484. you should know that

  485. these two words

  486. carry a weight beyond

  487. simply just saying,

  488. here I am.

  489. Right?

  490. Jesus is saying,

  491. once again,

  492. I am.

  493. He's claiming identity

  494. of being the I am.

  495. Yahweh,

  496. the God of the Old Testament.

  497. Who are you seeking?

  498. Jesus,

  499. I am.

  500. Now the power of these

  501. two words,

  502. Ego, a, me.

  503. Judas and the Roman detachment

  504. and all the temple police,

  505. all of the hundreds of men

  506. that came with weapons reared

  507. drew back and fell to the ground.

  508. And so He asked them once more,

  509. Who are you seeking?

  510. And they said,

  511. Jesus of Nazareth.

  512. And so He replied,

  513. I told you I am He.

  514. And so if you seek Me,

  515. let these men go.

  516. And John tells us

  517. He spoke these words

  518. as fulfillment

  519. of the word that He had spoken

  520. of these men

  521. whom you gave Me, Father.

  522. I have not lost one.

  523. He's come to die.

  524. He's come to fulfill

  525. the plan of God.

  526. He's come to save

  527. and to preserve

  528. and to protect His own.

  529. This was the plan of God.

  530. And Jesus was obedient,

  531. willing to lay down His life

  532. to save His own.

  533. Well, as always,

  534. Peter was a step behind.

  535. He had to do something

  536. about this.

  537. And John tells us

  538. that he took out his sword

  539. and he cut off the ear

  540. of the high priest's servant.

  541. Not exactly a good shot

  542. or a good idea, right?

  543. But he still wasn't quite understanding

  544. that all of this

  545. was according to plan.

  546. So Jesus tells him,

  547. Peter, put your sword back

  548. in its sheath.

  549. Now listen to this.

  550. Shall I not drink the cup

  551. that the Father has given me?

  552. Shall I not drink the cup

  553. that the Father has given me?

  554. Do you see the difference here?

  555. Do you see the contrast

  556. that John is laying out for us

  557. between our sin

  558. and His holiness?

  559. Do you see the contrast here

  560. between Judas and Jesus?

  561. Judas goes to betray God.

  562. Jesus goes to obey God.

  563. Judas unwittingly fulfills

  564. the plan of God in his sin.

  565. And Jesus knowingly fulfills

  566. the plan of God in his obedience.

  567. Judas sides with the powers of man.

  568. Jesus sides with the powers of God.

  569. And Judas and the hundreds of men

  570. came with weapons ready.

  571. And Jesus says to Peter,

  572. put your sword away.

  573. We're told elsewhere,

  574. he tells him,

  575. don't you know I can call down

  576. as many legions of angels as I need

  577. if I were to want to defend myself

  578. here in this moment.

  579. But I've come here for this purpose.

  580. To obey the plan of God.

  581. Church, as we walk through this journey

  582. to the cross,

  583. as we follow John,

  584. as he takes us to Golgotha,

  585. as we prepare our hearts

  586. for Good Friday

  587. and for Easter here

  588. in just a couple of short weeks,

  589. I want you to understand

  590. once again

  591. that the death of Jesus

  592. is not a tragic accident.

  593. This is not an innocent man

  594. caught by surprise

  595. by the powers of darkness.

  596. Jesus was not taken by surprise.

  597. This betrayal did not take Jesus by surprise.

  598. He told Judas back in chapter 13,

  599. what you are about to do,

  600. do it quickly.

  601. Jesus wasn't hiding.

  602. He went to a familiar place

  603. on purpose,

  604. knowing that this would be

  605. the first place Judas would look.

  606. He wasn't trying to hide.

  607. These hundreds of men

  608. didn't sneak up on Jesus.

  609. How could they?

  610. He didn't try to run away.

  611. He came out to them.

  612. He didn't wait for them

  613. to ask who he was.

  614. He asked them,

  615. what do you want?

  616. Who are you looking for?

  617. And he told them,

  618. I am he.

  619. He did not hide.

  620. He did not run.

  621. He did not need his followers

  622. to rise up

  623. and defend him.

  624. He came for this purpose,

  625. to drink the cup

  626. that the Father has given him.

  627. He was obedient.

  628. Judas betrayed God,

  629. yet Jesus fully submitted to God.

  630. That's contrast number one.

  631. John shows us another contrast

  632. here in this passage.

  633. It's the contrast between

  634. Peter and Jesus.

  635. It's a contrast between

  636. the unfaithfulness of Peter

  637. and the faithfulness of Jesus.

  638. The scene shifts now

  639. in verse 12

  640. to Jesus' informal trial with Annas.

  641. And the storytelling here,

  642. I want you to notice this

  643. because it's brilliant.

  644. I want you to see it.

  645. John, he bounces back and forth,

  646. doesn't he?

  647. Between the scene with Jesus

  648. and the scene with Peter

  649. and then back to Jesus

  650. and then back to Peter.

  651. And oftentimes,

  652. when a biblical narrative does that,

  653. the author's doing that on purpose

  654. to help us to see a connection

  655. between these two events.

  656. They want us to make

  657. some sort of conclusion

  658. as we read these stories together.

  659. And here,

  660. what I think John wants us to do

  661. is to see a contrast

  662. between Jesus' faithfulness

  663. and Peter's unfaithfulness.

  664. Okay?

  665. So we'll get to Peter

  666. in just a moment,

  667. but let's look at what

  668. is happening with Jesus first.

  669. Verse 12.

  670. Look there with me.

  671. Verse 12 says that

  672. the band of Roman soldiers

  673. and their captain,

  674. along with the Jewish officers,

  675. arrest Jesus,

  676. and they bound him.

  677. And first,

  678. they said it,

  679. they led him to Annas,

  680. who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,

  681. who was the high priest that year.

  682. Now,

  683. there's a little bit

  684. of confusing language

  685. going on here,

  686. isn't there?

  687. It's a little bit hard

  688. to keep up

  689. with the characters

  690. in this scene.

  691. There's a bit of political drama

  692. behind the scenes here

  693. because Caiaphas

  694. was the official high priest

  695. by Roman appointment,

  696. but Annas was the high priest

  697. before Caiaphas,

  698. and by Jewish law,

  699. when you're appointed

  700. the high priest,

  701. that appointment is for life.

  702. And so it may be

  703. that what's happening here

  704. is that the first leg

  705. of this informal trial

  706. was to bring him to Annas,

  707. who many thought

  708. was truly the real high priest,

  709. before bringing him to Caiaphas,

  710. who was the official high priest.

  711. Verse 19 says that

  712. the high priest,

  713. meaning Annas,

  714. then questioned Jesus

  715. about two things,

  716. his disciples

  717. and his teaching.

  718. And Jesus, again,

  719. staying faithful to his promise

  720. to protect his disciples

  721. to the end,

  722. he just ignores

  723. the first question completely,

  724. doesn't he?

  725. And he said,

  726. I've spoken openly

  727. to the world.

  728. I've always taught

  729. in synagogues

  730. and in the temple

  731. where all the Jews

  732. come together.

  733. I've said nothing in secret.

  734. Why do you ask me?

  735. Ask those who have heard me

  736. what I said to them.

  737. They know what I said.

  738. Now, on the one hand,

  739. what Jesus is doing here

  740. is simply stating

  741. an obvious fact, right?

  742. His teaching predominantly

  743. has been in public.

  744. He's already had

  745. his public run-ins

  746. with the Pharisees.

  747. He's taught the multitudes.

  748. He's taught in synagogues

  749. and in the temple.

  750. Any one of these hearers

  751. can bear testimony

  752. to what Jesus has taught.

  753. That's an obvious fact,

  754. isn't it?

  755. But on the other hand,

  756. what he's doing

  757. is he's also,

  758. he's digging in here

  759. to show that this line

  760. of questioning

  761. really isn't legitimate.

  762. This whole trial

  763. really isn't legitimate.

  764. Now, the proper legal procedure,

  765. according to Jewish law

  766. at the time,

  767. would be to question

  768. the witnesses

  769. before questioning

  770. the defendant.

  771. And typically,

  772. you would question

  773. the witnesses

  774. on behalf of the defendant

  775. first before you

  776. would question

  777. the witnesses

  778. that are accusing

  779. the defendant.

  780. And all of this

  781. goes right out

  782. the window here.

  783. They just start

  784. questioning Jesus.

  785. So Jesus says,

  786. I have witnesses.

  787. They've all heard me.

  788. Why are you bypassing

  789. the legal requirements

  790. and coming straight

  791. after me?

  792. Ask them.

  793. They heard what I said.

  794. He's pointing out

  795. that the real lawbreakers

  796. in the room,

  797. if we're going to be

  798. serious about this,

  799. the real lawbreakers

  800. in the room

  801. is not me.

  802. It's you.

  803. But here,

  804. before an illegitimate

  805. high priest

  806. with an illegitimate

  807. line of questioning,

  808. all decorum

  809. goes right out

  810. the window.

  811. This isn't going

  812. to be a fair trial.

  813. And make that clear

  814. that they're not here

  815. to play nice.

  816. When he said these things,

  817. one of the officers

  818. there strikes Jesus

  819. with his hand,

  820. saying,

  821. is that how you answer

  822. the high priest?

  823. But again,

  824. Jesus answered him,

  825. if what I said

  826. is wrong,

  827. bear witness

  828. about the wrong.

  829. But if what I said

  830. is right,

  831. why do you strike me?

  832. If I've done wrong,

  833. if I've spoken wrongly,

  834. testify.

  835. Hold a fair trial.

  836. Bear witness.

  837. Bring witnesses in here.

  838. Jesus is calling them

  839. to a fair trial.

  840. But of course,

  841. this won't be

  842. a fair trial.

  843. They've made up

  844. their mind.

  845. This man deserves

  846. to die.

  847. None of this was fair.

  848. None of this was right.

  849. He was the only

  850. innocent man

  851. to ever walk the earth.

  852. And yet here,

  853. he's treated

  854. as a criminal.

  855. Jesus willingly

  856. stands in the place

  857. of the guilty.

  858. Willingly subjects

  859. himself to public

  860. shame and ridicule.

  861. Why?

  862. For his disciples' sake.

  863. For faithfulness

  864. to the promises

  865. that he's made.

  866. For faithful obedience

  867. to the plan of God

  868. to save his own.

  869. Meanwhile,

  870. let's change the scene.

  871. John tells us

  872. that while Jesus

  873. is inside being questioned,

  874. outside is Peter

  875. and he's being interrogated

  876. in his own way.

  877. John says,

  878. verse 15,

  879. Simon Peter

  880. followed Jesus

  881. and so did

  882. another disciple.

  883. There's good reason

  884. to believe that

  885. that other disciple

  886. is John.

  887. And since that disciple,

  888. John,

  889. was known to the high priest,

  890. he entered with Jesus

  891. into the courtyard

  892. of the high priest.

  893. But Peter stood

  894. outside the door

  895. and at the other

  896. disciples' request,

  897. Peter was brought in

  898. and the servant girl

  899. who's holding the door

  900. open for him

  901. takes one look at Peter

  902. and asks him,

  903. not you too.

  904. You're not also

  905. one of this man's disciples,

  906. are you?

  907. You're with him too?

  908. You?

  909. And Peter,

  910. without any indication

  911. that he gave more

  912. than a moment's thought,

  913. I'm not.

  914. How could he do this?

  915. How could he say that?

  916. You remember,

  917. this is Peter

  918. we're talking about,

  919. right?

  920. It's the same Peter

  921. who just moments ago

  922. was willing to take on

  923. a thousand men

  924. for Jesus.

  925. And here,

  926. he's unwilling

  927. to identify with him

  928. for fear of public shame

  929. from one servant girl

  930. holding a door.

  931. It's the same Peter

  932. who in chapter 13,

  933. verse 37,

  934. said,

  935. Lord,

  936. I will lay down

  937. my life for you.

  938. I'll die for you,

  939. Jesus.

  940. I'll lay down

  941. my life for you.

  942. I'll do anything.

  943. I'll pay whatever it costs

  944. to follow you.

  945. And Jesus,

  946. at that point,

  947. you remember what he said,

  948. don't you?

  949. He called him on it.

  950. He said,

  951. will you lay down

  952. your life for me,

  953. Peter?

  954. Truly,

  955. truly,

  956. I say to you,

  957. the rooster will not crow

  958. till you have denied me

  959. three times.

  960. Jesus knew

  961. even Peter

  962. would betray him.

  963. Here is Jesus's

  964. is in the proverbial

  965. hot seat

  966. protecting his disciples.

  967. Here,

  968. Peter goes out

  969. and he warms himself

  970. by the fire

  971. beside Jesus's enemies.

  972. And as he stood here

  973. in the light of the flames,

  974. somebody else asked him

  975. a second time,

  976. you're not also

  977. one of his disciples,

  978. are you?

  979. Here's another chance

  980. to get it right.

  981. Here's another opportunity.

  982. Peter,

  983. okay,

  984. it's time for redemption.

  985. Claim him.

  986. Yes,

  987. say yes,

  988. yes.

  989. And again,

  990. he denied it.

  991. I am not.

  992. How could he say that?

  993. After all that

  994. he had seen and heard,

  995. after all that he'd experienced

  996. as a personal friend

  997. and disciple of Jesus,

  998. how could he say,

  999. I'm not one of his people?

  1000. And finally,

  1001. one of the servants

  1002. of the high priest,

1003. a relative of the man

  1004. whose ear,

  1005. Peter,

  1006. has just cut off.

1007. He gets a little bit more

  1008. pointed with him,

  1009. doesn't he?

  1010. He says,

  1011. didn't I see you

  1012. in the garden

  1013. with him?

  1014. Didn't I see you

  1015. there with him?

  1016. One more opportunity

  1017. to get it right,

  1018. Peter.

  1019. Peter.

  1020. And once again,

  1021. Peter denied it

  1022. and at once

  1023. the rooster crowed.

1024. Do you see the contrast

1025. that John wants us to see?

1026. Do you see the contrast

  1027. between Peter's

  1028. unfaithfulness

  1029. and Jesus'

  1030. faithfulness?

  1031. Now here is Peter

  1032. eager to protect himself

  1033. while Jesus himself

  1034. is willing to die

  1035. to protect sinners.

  1036. Here is Peter

  1037. denying the Lord

  1038. as Jesus defends

  1039. Peter and the other

  1040. disciples to the end.

  1041. Here is Peter

  1042. avoiding association

  1043. with the perfect

  1044. Son of God

  1045. as Jesus was willing

  1046. to associate

  1047. with sinners

  1048. like Peter.

  1049. Do you see it?

  1050. Peter wanted out

  1051. of any punishment

  1052. coming his way

  1053. but Jesus came

  1054. for this hour.

  1055. He was willing

  1056. to die

  1057. in the place

  1058. of sinners.

  1059. Jesus accepts

  1060. the public

  1061. humiliation

  1062. and the shame

  1063. but Peter

  1064. can't even bear

  1065. a little suffering

  1066. for his sake.

  1067. Jesus remains faithful

  1068. and Peter

  1069. is unfaithful.

  1070. Church,

  1071. there is a

  1072. sharp

  1073. and distinct

  1074. and undeniable

  1075. contrast

  1076. between holiness

  1077. and sinfulness.

  1078. Do you see it?

  1079. between darkness

  1080. and light.

  1081. But before we

  1082. shake our heads

  1083. and wag our finger

  1084. at Judas

  1085. and Peter

1086. here is what I want

  1087. you to see

  1088. church.

  1089. We are

  1090. Judas.

  1091. We are

  1092. Peter.

  1093. We are

  1094. guilty.

  1095. Every one of us

  1096. of sinning

  1097. against a holy

  1098. God.

  1099. we have

  1100. joined together

  1101. with the rest

  1102. of the world

  1103. to try and

  1104. snuff out

  1105. and block

  1106. the light.

  1107. John told us

  1108. how this would

  1109. play out.

  1110. The light

  1111. has come

  1112. into the world

  1113. and people

  1114. loved the

  1115. darkness

  1116. rather than

  1117. the light

  1118. because their

  1119. works were

  1120. evil.

  1121. We are

  1122. not neutral

  1123. here.

  1124. Every one of us

  1125. is guilty

  1126. of betrayal.

  1127. We join together

  1128. with the rest

  1129. of the world

  1130. in sinful

  1131. rebellion

  1132. against God

  1133. just like

  1134. Judas.

  1135. We have

  1136. betrayed

  1137. the Lord.

  1138. Haven't we?

  1139. We have

  1140. made idols

  1141. for ourselves

  1142. of sex.

  1143. Idols

  1144. of power.

  1145. Idols

  1146. of money.

  1147. Idols

  1148. of control.

  1149. Every one

  1150. of us

  1151. has exchanged

  1152. the truth

  1153. of God

  1154. for a lie

  1155. and worshipped

  1156. and served

  1157. created things

  1158. rather than

  1159. the creator

  1160. who is blessed

  1161. forever.

  1162. Amen.

  1163. As Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1164. chapter 1

  1165. tells us,

  1166. we have

  1167. done this.

  1168. We have

  1169. chosen to

  1170. take our

  1171. 30 pieces

  1172. of silver

  1173. and be

  1174. content

  1175. with trinkets

  1176. and the

  1177. glory of

  1178. God is

  1179. held out

  1180. to us

  1181. in Christ.

  1182. We are

  1183. just like

  1184. Judas

  1185. and

  1186. we are

  1187. just like

  1188. Peter.

  1189. How often

  1190. have we

  1191. denied

  1192. him?

  1193. How often

  1194. are we

  1195. hot and

  1196. cold?

  1197. On and

  1198. off.

  1199. Hot and

  1200. cold.

  1201. I will

  1202. cut someone's

  1203. ear off

  1204. for you

  1205. Jesus.

  1206. I will

  1207. fight a

  1208. thousand

  1209. men for

  1210. you

  1211. Jesus.

  1212. But the

  1213. next

  1214. moment

  1215. we can't

  1216. even speak

  1217. up to

  1218. a little

  1219. servant

  1220. girl

  1221. holding

  1222. the

  1223. door.

  1224. How often

  1225. have we

  1226. pledged our

  1227. complete and

  1228. total allegiance

  1229. to God

  1230. and then

  1231. moments later

  1232. turned our

  1233. back to

  1234. him?

  1235. How often

  1236. have we

  1237. said to

  1238. him in

  1239. prayer,

  1240. Lord,

  1241. I am

  1242. yours.

  1243. I would

  1244. die for

  1245. you.

  1246. I would

  1247. do

  1248. anything for

  1249. you,

  1250. Lord.

  1251. Then we

  1252. go out

  1253. and we

  1254. live our

  1255. lives as

  1256. if he

  1257. didn't

  1258. even

  1259. exist.

  1260. I don't

  1261. know him.

  1262. I don't

  1263. know him.

  1264. I don't

  1265. know him.

  1266. How often

  1267. have we

  1268. been unwilling

  1269. to bear a

  1270. little

  1271. criticism

  1272. for identifying

  1273. with Jesus?

  1274. how often

  1275. have we

  1276. been unwilling

  1277. to be

  1278. mocked

  1279. or ridiculed

  1280. for him?

  1281. How often

  1282. have we

  1283. preferred to

  1284. warm ourselves

  1285. with the

  1286. comforts of

  1287. the world

  1288. rather than

  1289. just endure

  1290. a little

  1291. suffering

  1292. for his

  1293. sake?

  1294. I spent

  1295. a few

  1296. days this

  1297. week at

  1298. the Charles

  1299. Simeon

  1300. Trust

  1301. preaching

  1302. workshop.

  1303. And Charles

  1304. Simeon,

  1305. if you're not

  1306. familiar with

  1307. him,

  1308. was the

  1309. pastor of

  1310. Trinity

  1311. Church in

  1312. Cambridge,

  1313. England for

  1314. 49 years.

  1315. And he

  1316. was once

  1317. asked by a

  1318. friend how

  1319. he had

  1320. lasted that

  1321. long.

  1322. 49 years

  1323. in the

  1324. ministry.

  1325. How have

  1326. you lasted

  1327. that long

  1328. through all

  1329. the many

  1330. attacks and

  1331. persecutions

  1332. and shame

  1333. thrown his

  1334. way against

  1335. him for

  1336. identifying

  1337. faithfully

  1338. with Christ?

  1339. Here's what

  1340. he said.

  1341. My dear

  1342. brother, we

  1343. must not

  1344. mind a

  1345. little

  1346. suffering for

  1347. Christ's

  1348. sake.

  1349. When I'm

  1350. getting through

  1351. a hedge,

  1352. if my head

  1353. and shoulders

  1354. are safely

  1355. through, I

  1356. can bear the

  1357. pricking of

  1358. my legs.

  1359. Let us

  1360. rejoice in

  1361. the remembrance

  1362. that our

  1363. holy head

  1364. has surmounted

  1365. all his

  1366. suffering and

  1367. triumphed over

  1368. death.

  1369. Let us

  1370. follow him

  1371. patiently.

  1372. We shall

  1373. soon be

  1374. partakers of

  1375. his victory.

  1376. glory.

  1377. Friend, as

  1378. we read

  1379. this account,

  1380. we have to

  1381. understand that

  1382. we are

  1383. guilty.

  1384. We often

  1385. sing the

  1386. song,

  1387. Behold the

  1388. man upon

  1389. the cross,

  1390. my sin

  1391. upon his

  1392. shoulders.

  1393. My sin

  1394. upon his

  1395. shoulders.

  1396. Ashamed I

  1397. hear my

  1398. mocking voice.

  1399. It was my

  1400. sin that held

  1401. him there until

  1402. it was finished.

  1403. My sin.

  1404. We have to

  1405. acknowledge that

  1406. each one of

  1407. us, we

  1408. have betrayed

  1409. Christ.

  1410. We have

  1411. denied Christ.

  1412. We have

  1413. earned death

  1414. with our

  1415. sin.

  1416. This darkness

  1417. is ours.

  1418. But church,

  1419. the good news

  1420. of the

  1421. gospel is

  1422. that Christ

  1423. Jesus has

  1424. succeeded where

  1425. all of us

  1426. have failed.

  1427. Amen?

  1428. 1 Peter 3.18

  1429. says,

  1430. Christ also

  1431. suffered once

  1432. for sins,

  1433. the righteous

  1434. for the

  1435. unrighteous,

  1436. that he might

  1437. bring us

  1438. to God.

  1439. Isaiah 53,

  1440. he was pierced

  1441. for our

  1442. transgressions.

  1443. He was

  1444. crushed for

  1445. our iniquities.

  1446. Upon him

  1447. was the

  1448. chastisement

  1449. that brought

  1450. us peace,

  1451. and with his

  1452. wounds we

  1453. are healed.

  1454. All we like

  1455. sheep have

  1456. gone astray.

  1457. We have

  1458. turned every

  1459. one of us

  1460. to his

  1461. own way,

  1462. and the

  1463. Lord has

  1464. laid on

  1465. him the

  1466. iniquity of

  1467. us all.

  1468. Christ Jesus

  1469. has tasted

  1470. the wrath of

  1471. God that we

  1472. deserved.

  1473. He's taken

  1474. death head

  1475. on, and he

  1476. alone has

  1477. come through

  1478. victorious.

  1479. Why?

  1480. So that

  1481. sinners like

  1482. us, who

  1483. just can't

  1484. get it

  1485. together,

  1486. the sinners

  1487. like us,

  1488. who are

  1489. united to

  1490. him by

  1491. faith,

  1492. might share

  1493. in his

  1494. victory over

  1495. sin, death,

  1496. and the

  1497. grave.

  1498. Now the

  1499. message that I

  1500. want you to

  1501. hear this

  1502. morning from

  1503. this passage

  1504. is not

  1505. stop being

  1506. like Judas,

  1507. be more like

  1508. Jesus.

  1509. It's not

  1510. stop being

  1511. like Peter,

  1512. be more like

  1513. Jesus.

  1514. That's not

  1515. the gospel,

  1516. church.

  1517. In fact, if

  1518. that's how you

  1519. understand the

  1520. gospel, I

  1521. would say you

  1522. don't really

  1523. understand it

  1524. very well at

  1525. all.

  1526. You might

  1527. not be a

  1528. Christian.

  1529. The gospel

  1530. is not stop

  1531. doing this

  1532. and start

  1533. doing this.

  1534. The gospel

  1535. is the

  1536. recognition that

  1537. our sin is

  1538. dark and

  1539. heavy, as

  1540. distinct from

  1541. the light as

  1542. the moon from

  1543. the darkness,

  1544. and yet Christ,

  1545. the light of

  1546. the world, has

  1547. stepped into

  1548. the darkness

  1549. to redeem us

  1550. out of the

  1551. light of the

  1552. darkness.

  1553. He stepped

  1554. into the

  1555. darkness to

  1556. do what we

  1557. cannot do

  1558. ourselves.

  1559. We can't

  1560. stop being

  1561. like Judas

  1562. unless he

  1563. comes and

  1564. he changes

  1565. our heart,

  1566. calls us

  1567. out of

  1568. darkness to

  1569. belong into

  1570. his marvelous

  1571. light.

  1572. The gospel

  1573. is the

  1574. invitation not

  1575. to do

  1576. better, but

  1577. to receive

  1578. what he

  1579. alone has

  1580. done.

  1581. As we

  1582. walk with

  1583. John over

  1584. these final

  1585. chapters and

  1586. follow Jesus

  1587. to the cross,

  1588. I want you

  1589. to ask

  1590. yourself,

  1591. have I

  1592. received what

  1593. Jesus has

  1594. done?

  1595. Do I

  1596. really know

  1597. that I've

  1598. sinned against

  1599. him and

  1600. have I truly

  1601. received his

  1602. forgiveness?

  1603. Have I truly

  1604. turned away from

  1605. this life of

  1606. sin and

  1607. trusted in

  1608. Christ alone

  1609. to say,

  1610. yes, I'm

  1611. guilty, but

  1612. I trust that

  1613. you came to

  1614. take my guilt

  1615. away from

  1616. me, that

  1617. you died for

  1618. my sin,

  1619. that you were

  1620. punished on

  1621. my behalf.

  1622. Have you

  1623. received his

  1624. work, friend?

  1625. And if

  1626. you have, if

  1627. you are a

  1628. believer, and

  1629. resting in

  1630. that finished

  1631. work of

  1632. Jesus, what

  1633. steps of

  1634. repentance do

  1635. we need to

  1636. take this

  1637. morning?

  1638. In what

  1639. ways have we

  1640. denied him

  1641. this week?

  1642. In what

  1643. ways have we

  1644. betrayed him

  1645. this week?

  1646. And in what

  1647. ways have we

  1648. been unwilling

  1649. to bear a

  1650. little suffering

  1651. for the sake

  1652. of Christ?

  1653. God's

  1654. renew your

  1655. commitment once

  1656. again to

  1657. follow him

  1658. and praise

  1659. the Lord for

  1660. his obedience,

  1661. for his

  1662. faithfulness.

  1663. Our sins, they

  1664. are many, but

  1665. his, what?

  1666. His mercy is

  1667. more.

  1668. Praise God.

  1669. I want to

  1670. close with one

  1671. final contrast

  1672. this morning.

  1673. This is a

  1674. bonus for you,

  1675. okay?

  1676. Contrast number

  1677. three is the

  1678. contrast between

  1679. Judas and

  1680. Peter.

  1681. This is a

  1682. contrast between

  1683. condemnation and

  1684. forgiveness.

  1685. Matthew tells

  1686. us in Matthew

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  1687. chapter 27 that

  1688. Judas, when he

  1689. saw that Jesus

  1690. was condemned,

  1691. changed his

  1692. mind and came

  1693. to the chief

  1694. priests and the

  1695. Pharisees and

  1696. tried to give

  1697. them their money

  1698. back.

  1699. He said, I've

  1700. sinned by betraying

  1701. innocent blood.

  1702. He realized

  1703. he messed up,

  1704. but for him,

  1705. it was too

  1706. late.

  1707. It says he

  1708. threw down the

  1709. money on the

  1710. temple floor and

  1711. he left and he

  1712. hanged himself.

  1713. Judas felt

  1714. sorrow for his

  1715. wrongs and he

  1716. went out and he

  1717. died in his

  1718. sin.

  1719. But Peter,

  1720. Lord willing,

  1721. we'll see what

  1722. happens with

  1723. Peter in just a

  1724. couple of weeks.

  1725. Peter, although

  1726. he had denied

  1727. the Lord,

  1728. although he

  1729. had sinned

  1730. mightily against

  1731. the Lord,

  1732. this was not

  1733. the end for

  1734. Peter.

  1735. He would be

  1736. forgiven.

  1737. He would be

  1738. restored.

  1739. He would be

  1740. washed clean.

  1741. He would be

  1742. made a pillar of

  1743. the early church.

  1744. The Lord sought

  1745. him out and

  1746. restored him,

  1747. forgave him for

  1748. what he had

  1749. done.

  1750. The difference

  1751. between Judas

  1752. and Peter is not

  1753. a difference of

  1754. sin.

  1755. Do you see

  1756. that?

  1757. both have

  1758. sinned greatly

  1759. against Jesus.

  1760. The difference

  1761. between Judas

  1762. and Peter is

  1763. forgiveness.

  1764. The Lord

  1765. sought Peter

  1766. out and

  1767. forgave him

  1768. of his sin.

  1769. This is the

  1770. contrast that I

  1771. want to put

  1772. before us this

  1773. morning as we

  1774. close.

  1775. Church, all of

  1776. us have sinned

  1777. and fallen short

  1778. of the glory of

  1779. God.

  1780. all of us

  1781. are guilty.

  1782. But Christ

  1783. has come

  1784. that sinners

  1785. like us

  1786. might receive

  1787. him and

  1788. find forgiveness

  1789. by the finished

  1790. work of Jesus.

  1791. Let's pray.

  1792. Let's pray.

  1793. Lord, the

  1794. darkness of our

  1795. sin is so

  1796. evident in

  1797. these chapters.

  1798. We confess

  1799. our sin to

  1800. you this

  1801. morning in

  1802. many ways

  1803. that we have

  1804. denied you,

  1805. betrayed you,

  1806. sinned against

  1807. you.

  1808. Father, for

  1809. those who you

  1810. have sought

  1811. out and

  1812. forgiven, we

  1813. praise you,

  1814. Lord, for the

  1815. finished work of

  1816. Christ that you

  1817. have obeyed in

  1818. our place, that

  1819. your perfect

  1820. righteousness is

  1821. credited to our

  1822. bankrupt account by

  1823. faith.

  1824. God, for the

  1825. people who

  1826. do not know

  1827. you, Lord, we

  1828. pray in this

  1829. moment, would you

  1830. show them their

  1831. need for Christ?

  1832. Would you open

  1833. their eyes to see

  1834. the glory of

  1835. Jesus that he

  1836. alone can save,

  1837. not by any

  1838. goodness in our

  1839. account, but by

  1840. his perfect

  1841. righteousness and

  1842. faithfulness to the

  1843. plan of God?

  1844. God, we love

  1845. you, Lord, we

  1846. pray this in

  1847. Jesus' name.

  1848. Amen.

  1849. Amen.
