  1. Amen. Well, please take your Bibles and open them up again to John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  2. Only three more sermons left in the Gospel of John, if you can believe it.

  3. We've made our way now to the cross of Christ.

  4. Chapter 19, and I'll pick up in the second half of verse 16.

  5. We'll read through the end of the chapter, and when you found that there in your Bibles,

  6. John 19, 16 through the end of the chapter,

  7. if you would, let's please stand in honor of the reading of God's Word.

  8. So they took Jesus, and he went out bearing his own cross to the place called the place of a skull,

  9. which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.

  10. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

  11. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross.

  12. It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.

  13. Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,

  14. and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.

  15. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,

  16. Do not write the King of the Jews, but rather this man said I am King of the Jews.

  17. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.

  18. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts,

  19. one part for each soldier, also his tunic.

  20. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  21. So they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see whose it shall be.

  22. This was to fulfill the scripture, which says,

  23. They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

  24. So the soldiers did these things.

  25. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister,

  26. Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

  27. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby,

  28. he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son.

  29. Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother.

  30. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

  31. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said to fulfill the scripture,

  32. I thirst.

  33. A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch

  34. and held it to his mouth.

  35. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said,

  36. It is finished.

  37. And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

  38. Since it was the day of preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath,

  39. for that Sabbath was a high day,

  40. the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken,

  41. and that they might be taken away.

  42. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other,

  43. who had been crucified with him.

  44. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,

  45. they did not break his legs.

  46. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear,

  47. and at once there came out blood and water.

  48. He who saw it has borne witness.

  49. His testimony is true.

  50. And he knows that he is telling the truth that you also may believe.

  51. For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  52. Not one of his bones will be broken.

  53. And again, another scripture says,

  54. They will look on him whom they have pierced.

  55. After these things, Joseph of Arimathea,

  56. who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews,

  57. asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus.

  58. And Pilate gave him permission.

  59. So he came and took away his body.

  60. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

  61. came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

  62. about 75 pounds in weight.

  63. So they took the body of Jesus,

  64. and bound it in linen cloths with the spices,

  65. as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  66. Now in the place where he was crucified,

  67. there was a garden.

  68. And in the garden, a new tomb,

  69. in which no one had yet been laid.

  70. So because of the Jewish day of preparation,

  71. since the tomb was close at hand,

  72. they laid Jesus there.

  73. This is God's holy word.

  74. Let's pray once more.

  75. Lord, as we've come here to this crucial moment

  76. in the Gospel of John,

  77. this crucial moment in human history,

  78. Father, we pray that we would,

  79. with fresh eyes,

  80. see the truth of the cross.

  81. And as John would have us,

  82. Lord, we pray that we would see it,

  83. hear it, and believe that Jesus is

  84. exactly who he claims to be.

  85. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  86. Amen.

  87. You may be seated.

  88. What do you think

  89. is the most important question

  90. a person could ask?

  91. Your answer to that question

  92. might depend on who you ask.

  93. And I read a couple of articles this week

  94. just searching for what others

  95. might have to say about that question.

  96. Harvard Business Review

  97. published an article several years ago

  98. arguing that the most important question

  99. a person could ask is,

  100. why am I here?

  101. That's a good question.

  102. It's a question of purpose.

  103. Another article that I read this week,

  104. it listed 15 important questions to ask.

  105. What are my values?

  106. Am I living in accordance with my values?

  107. We're numbers one and two on the list.

  108. How can I better take care of myself?

  109. Was on there.

  110. How can I improve the lives of others?

  111. Was on there.

  112. All of them pretty good questions.

  113. And when you stop and think about it,

  114. you realize that so much of our life

  115. is shaped and defined

  116. by the answers that we give

  117. to certain key questions.

  118. Who am I going to marry?

  119. Where am I going to live?

  120. What kind of work am I going to give myself to?

  121. But if I could add in my two cents

  122. to that conversation,

  123. I'd like to just point out

  124. that all of these questions

  125. have one thing in common.

  126. Did you notice what they were?

  127. They all start in the wrong place.

  128. All of these questions begin with us.

  129. And interestingly enough,

  130. what I'd like to point out this morning

  131. is that the most important question

  132. that any of us could possibly ask this morning

  133. doesn't begin with us at all.

  134. The most important question we could ask is,

  135. who is Jesus?

  136. Who is this man, Jesus?

  137. And what we've seen in the Gospel of John

  138. is he's been trying to answer

  139. that question for us all along.

  140. He began in chapter one,

  141. telling us,

  142. in the beginning was the Word,

  143. and the Word was God.

  144. And the Word was with God.

  145. This Word has come down

  146. and has become flesh

  147. and dwelt among us.

  148. We've seen His glory,

  149. glory as of the only Son

  150. from the Father,

  151. full of grace and truth.

  152. We've seen these claims

  153. from the lips of Jesus,

  154. that I am the light of the world.

  155. I am the good shepherd of the sheep.

  156. I am the door of the sheep.

  157. I am the resurrection and the life.

  158. He's claiming for us,

  159. building a case,

  160. that this man, Jesus,

  161. is God in the flesh.

  162. He is the Christ,

  163. the Son of God,

  164. and that by believing,

  165. we might have life in His name.

  166. See, these are bold claims,

  167. aren't they?

  168. And John is making a bold claim

  169. for us this morning.

  170. And as we follow Jesus now

  171. to this crucial moment,

  172. as He prepares to suffer

  173. and die on the cross,

  174. now is the time

  175. where we have to settle

  176. this question in our minds.

  177. John is forcing us this morning

  178. to pick a side.

  179. Is He who He claims to be

  180. or is He not?

  181. What John gives us this morning

  182. is a claim and a case.

  183. The claim is that Jesus is King.

  184. He is the Messiah,

  185. the Son of God.

  186. And then He builds this case for us

  187. to substantiate that claim

  188. by pointing us to four Old Testament passages

  189. that prophesy the death of Jesus on the cross.

  190. So, the claim and the case.

  191. First, let's consider the claim.

  192. Look there to verse 16 with me.

  193. Verse 16 says that they took Jesus

  194. and He went out bearing His own cross

  195. to the place called the place of a skull,

  196. which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.

  197. And there they crucified Him

  198. and with Him two others,

  199. one on either side,

  200. and Jesus in between them.

  201. It was customary for the condemned criminal

  202. to carry the cross beam,

  203. the horizontal cross beam,

  204. on their back as a part of the sentence.

  205. And this, after being beaten and whipped

  206. nearly to the point of death,

  207. but just nearly,

  208. the Romans were very skilled at this.

  209. They knew exactly how far

  210. they could push the guilty party,

  211. the condemned party,

  212. before the point of death.

  213. And they prolonged the suffering

  214. as long as they possibly could

  215. while beating them

  216. as much as they possibly could.

  217. The condemned would carry

  218. that wooden cross beam

  219. to the place of their execution

  220. where the upright beam

  221. would likely already be in place.

  222. They would be forced to lay down

  223. on their back

  224. and have their arms secured

  225. to the beam,

  226. whether by tying them there

  227. or in the case of Jesus,

  228. by nailing them in place.

  229. And then the Romans would then

  230. lift up that horizontal beam

  231. with the criminal attached

  232. and secure the horizontal beam

  233. to the vertical beam

  234. and then fasten their feet

  235. to the vertical beam

  236. in the same way that they did

  237. the arms.

  238. We know from the other gospel writers,

  239. Jesus carried His cross

  240. as far as the city gates

  241. before collapsing.

  242. He was so weary

  243. and so exhausted

  244. from the beating

  245. that He had endured

  246. to that point.

  247. Simon of Cyrene

  248. was enlisted to carry

  249. the cross the rest of the way.

  250. And John tells us

  251. that Jesus was lifted up

  252. and He was crucified

  253. alongside two others.

  254. There were three men

  255. crucified that day,

  256. but He was crucified there

  257. between two thieves,

  258. one on His left,

  259. one on His right.

  260. We know from Luke's account

  261. that one of the criminals

  262. railed at Him

  263. if you are who you say you are,

  264. come down.

  265. Bring us down with you.

  266. Save yourself and us

  267. if you are who you say you are.

  268. But the other criminal,

  269. we know,

  270. rebuked Him and said,

  271. we're guilty.

  272. We're receiving what's due

  273. for our sins,

  274. but this man on the middle cross

  275. is innocent.

  276. And He asked Him,

  277. Jesus, remember me

  278. when you come into your kingdom.

  279. This last moment,

  280. this guilty criminal

  281. believed that Jesus

  282. was in fact the King,

  283. that He was in fact

  284. headed to His kingdom,

  285. and that if He so desired,

  286. He could bring

  287. even a guilty criminal

  288. along with Him.

  289. And Jesus told him,

  290. truly I tell you,

  291. today,

  292. you will be with me

  293. in paradise.

  294. It was also customary

  295. for the crime of the accused

  296. to be written down

  297. and fastened

  298. to the top of the cross

  299. right there

  300. in public eye

  301. for all to see.

  302. And the goal here

  303. is not just public execution,

  304. it was public humiliation.

  305. They did this in public.

  306. They wrote this sentence

  307. in three languages

  308. right there

  309. in the side of the city

  310. on a hill

  311. so that anybody

  312. who walked by

  313. might be able to look up

  314. and see the shame

  315. and the guilt

  316. of the condemned party.

  317. They wanted to shame

  318. the accused.

  319. So verse 19,

  320. it tells us that

  321. Pilate wrote a message

  322. and put it up on the cross.

  323. And here's what it said,

  324. Jesus of Nazareth,

  325. the King of the Jews.

  326. Naturally,

  327. the chief priests

  328. of the Jews

  329. tried to correct him.

  330. They didn't like

  331. what that sign said.

  332. They said,

  333. don't write

  334. the King of the Jews,

  335. rather write

  336. this man said

  337. I am King of the Jews.

  338. Do you see the difference?

  339. The King of the Jews,

  340. an identity claim

  341. or this man simply said

  342. I am King of the Jews.

  343. That's his crime.

  344. He claimed to be King

  345. but was in fact

  346. not.

  347. Pilate said,

  348. I have written

  349. what I have written.

  350. What I want us to see

  351. and understand

  352. is that this inscription

  353. hanging there

  354. above the head of Christ

  355. written there

  356. in three languages

  357. so that any

  358. who looked up

  359. and read

  360. might read it.

  361. This was a claim.

  362. This is a bold statement.

  363. It's a truth claim.

  364. This man,

  365. Jesus,

  366. is King.

  367. The man on the cross

  368. that you are crucifying

  369. is King.

  370. This is the claim

  371. that John's been making

  372. all along

  373. that Jesus,

  374. this man,

  375. is the King.

  376. Not just a King

  377. but this is

  378. the Messiah.

  379. This is the King

  380. that we've been waiting for.

  381. God promised David

  382. all the way back

  383. in 2 Samuel 7

  384. a King from His line

  385. who would rule forever,

  386. whose kingdom

  387. would have no end.

  388. Jesus is that King.

  389. John's claiming

  390. that Jesus is the King

  391. from Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  392. who was promised,

  393. prophesied

  394. that He would have

  395. glory and a kingdom

  396. that all peoples

  397. and nations

  398. and languages

  399. should serve Him.

  400. An everlasting dominion

  401. which shall not pass away,

  402. a kingdom

  403. that shall not be destroyed.

  404. This is the claim

  405. John is making.

  406. And you can agree

  407. with that claim

  408. or you can disagree

  409. with that claim

  410. but you cannot

  411. ignore

  412. that claim.

  413. And you cannot

  414. be neutral

  415. here.

  416. John is forcing us

  417. to take

  418. a side.

  419. I was at a coffee shop

  420. the other day

  421. and I had my Bible open.

  422. I was studying

  423. and writing

  424. and preparing

  425. for a message

  426. and somebody

  427. struck up

  428. a conversation

  429. with me

  430. and as we talked

  431. we started talking

  432. about what I was reading,

  433. what we were doing

  434. and we started talking

  435. about the Bible

  436. and he said,

  437. you know,

  438. you really ought

  439. to meet Bill.

  440. I'm making that name up.

  441. Not you, Bill.

  442. Sorry.

  443. It's a fake name.

  444. Bill.

  445. You ought to meet Bill.

  446. He's in here all the time.

  447. He talks about

  448. religious things.

  449. He knows a lot

  450. about the Bible

  451. and other religions too.

  452. And another man

  453. that was at the same table

  454. he piped up

  455. at that point

  456. and he said,

  457. oh yeah,

  458. you know,

  459. Bill is,

  460. he's not one of those

  461. unreasonable Christians.

  462. He's the most

  463. reasonable Christian

  464. you will ever meet.

  465. And so Bill,

  466. what he does

  467. is he just basically

  468. says that there's

  469. something good

  470. that you can pluck

  471. out of just about

  472. every religion

  473. and he finds the good

  474. in all of it

  475. and he's very,

  476. very,

  477. very reasonable.

  478. And so what I said

  479. in the moment

  480. was,

  481. well that's interesting.

  482. I'd love to meet Bill

  483. and talk about that.

  484. It wasn't the right time

  485. to get all the way

  486. into it right then

  487. and I do hope

  488. one day I will get

  489. to meet Bill

  490. and talk with him

  491. about these things.

  492. But what I thought

  493. was,

  494. I guess that makes me

  495. unreasonable.

  496. I guess I'm one of

  497. those unreasonable

  498. Christians

  499. that thinks that

  500. there actually

  501. is a truth

  502. or an untruth

  503. that he is king,

  504. he may be king,

  505. he isn't king

  506. are not all

  507. equally valid

  508. answers to the

  509. question,

  510. who is Jesus?

  511. Do you see the issue

  512. here?

  513. This is a black and white

  514. yes or no proposition.

  515. Either he is not

  516. king of all the earth

  517. and if he's not,

  518. disregard him,

  519. ignore him,

  520. forget this.

  521. But if he is,

  522. then that defines

  523. every other question

  524. we might ever ask

  525. about our life.

  526. The question,

  527. who is Jesus,

  528. defines

  529. every other

  530. question

  531. you could ever

  532. ask.

  533. What is my purpose

  534. if he's king

  535. is to honor him?

  536. I wonder what

  537. you would say

  538. if

  539. someone found out

  540. you believe

  541. Jesus Christ

  542. is Lord,

  543. absolute truth

  544. statement.

  545. And they told you,

  546. I think that

  547. that is unreasonable.

  548. I wonder how

  549. you would respond.

  550. What John does

  551. in the rest of our

  552. passage,

  553. what I want us to see

  554. is he builds

  555. a case here

  556. to substantiate

  557. this claim.

  558. From the Old Testament,

  559. he shows us

  560. that this isn't

  561. just some religious

  562. mumbo-jumbo,

  563. some unfounded

  564. claim that we

  565. made up to say

  566. we follow Christ,

  567. Christ is our king.

  568. No,

  569. he takes the Old Testament,

  570. these passages

  571. written thousands

  572. of years before

  573. Jesus was born,

  574. thousands of years

  575. before the events

  576. of the cross

  577. and he says

  578. we've been talking

  579. about this moment

  580. all along.

  581. So second,

  582. let's consider

  583. the case

  584. that John makes

  585. here for us.

  586. I praise God

  587. that we have

  588. good reason

  589. to believe

  590. that Jesus Christ

  591. is Lord.

  592. John builds

  593. the case

  594. with four

  595. Old Testament

  596. prophecies

  597. that are fulfilled

  598. in the death

  599. of Jesus.

  600. I want us to look here.

  601. This is exhibit

  602. A, B, C, and D.

  603. Look with me

  604. to verse 23.

  605. John says,

  606. when the soldiers

  607. had crucified

  608. Jesus,

  609. they took his garments

  610. and divided them

  611. into four pieces,

  612. four parts.

  613. One part

  614. for each soldier

  615. and also

  616. his tunic.

  617. But the tunic

  618. was seamless,

  619. woven in one piece

  620. from top to bottom

  621. and so they said

  622. to one another,

  623. let us not tear it

  624. but cast lots

  625. for it

  626. to see

  627. whose it shall be.

  628. Why in the world

  629. does John

  630. feel the need

  631. to include

  632. this seemingly

  633. meaningless detail

  634. about Jesus' crucifixion?

  635. Why does he feel

  636. the need

  637. to tell us

  638. about his clothing

  639. and what the Romans

  640. did with his clothes?

  641. Well, he says there

  642. in verse 24,

  643. look there,

  644. this was to fulfill

  645. the scripture

  646. which says,

  647. they divided

  648. my garments

  649. among them

  650. and for my clothing

  651. they cast lots.

  652. This is exhibit A.

  653. And I just want you

  654. to note here

  655. that whenever John

  656. says something like

  657. this was to fulfill

  658. the scripture

  659. or this happened

  660. in order that

  661. scripture might be fulfilled,

  662. we ought to marvel

  663. at this.

  664. And when we're reading

  665. our Bibles

  666. and we come across

  667. something like this,

  668. slow down

  669. and dig backwards

  670. in the Old Testament

  671. to see the link

  672. that he's making.

  673. We tend to just

  674. jump right past this

  675. but when we see

  676. that he's doing this,

  677. what he's doing

  678. is he is building

  679. a case for us

  680. from the Old Testament

  681. that we might believe

  682. what he's saying

  683. about Jesus

  684. here in the New Testament.

  685. This is proof

  686. of the identity

  687. of Jesus.

  688. He's quoting

  689. the Old Testament

  690. scriptures written

  691. centuries before

  692. the events of the cross

  693. and he's telling us

  694. that this moment

  695. was planned out

  696. by God

  697. before the ages began.

  698. It has been foretold

  699. and prophesied

  700. all along

  701. every step of the way

  702. in the Old Testament

  703. and now we're here

  704. and it's executed

  705. perfectly

  706. in the life

  707. and death

  708. and resurrection

  709. of Jesus.

  710. So,

  711. exhibit A.

  712. Here he's quoting

  713. from Psalm 22.

  714. You can turn there

  715. if you like.

  716. I'm going to read it

  717. for you.

  718. You'll recognize it

  719. as I read it.

  720. Psalm 22

  721. begins like this.

  722. My God,

  723. my God,

  724. why have you

  725. forsaken me?

  726. Do you recognize that?

  727. You recognize this

  728. because

  729. this is,

  730. these are Jesus' words.

  731. Jesus quotes this psalm

  732. up on the cross.

  733. Psalm 22 continues

  734. verse 6.

  735. Verse 14.

  736. It says,

  737. I am poured out

  738. like water

  739. and all my bones

  740. are out of joint.

  741. My heart is like wax.

  742. It is melted

  743. within my breast.

  744. My strength

  745. is dried up

  746. like a pot shirt

  747. and my tongue

  748. sticks to my jaws.

  749. You lay me

  750. in the dust

  751. of death.

  752. In verse 18,

  753. Psalm 22,

  754. they divide

  755. my garments

  756. among them

  757. and for my clothing

  758. they cast

  759. lots.

  760. You realize

  761. the Romans

  762. likely would have

  763. had no idea

  764. what Psalm 22

  765. said.

  766. And it seems

  767. like such a

  768. small detail.

  769. But John

  770. here as he stands

  771. at the foot

  772. of the cross

  773. as he reflects

  774. on what he's

  775. seeing,

  776. he says,

  777. it was written

  778. so the soldiers

  779. did these

  780. things.

  781. He's showing us

  782. that the death

  783. of Jesus

  784. down to the

  785. very smallest

  786. details

  787. was exactly

  788. as was written

  789. centuries before

  790. it happened.

  791. Exhibit B,

  792. verse 28.

  793. John tells us

  794. yet another

  795. fulfillment

  796. in verse 28.

  797. He says,

  798. after this,

  799. that is,

  800. after Jesus

  801. entrusts his mother

  802. into the care

  803. of John,

  804. he says,

  805. Jesus,

  806. knowing that all

  807. was now finished,

  808. said to fulfill

  809. the scripture.

  810. Do you notice that?

  811. Do you see that

  812. phrase?

  813. He said,

  814. to fulfill the

  815. scripture,

  816. I thirst.

  817. You can only

  818. imagine the

  819. physical anguish

  820. that Jesus is

  821. experiencing here

  822. in this moment.

  823. The loss of blood

  824. and sweat.

  825. He's been up all

  826. night having his

  827. body pushed to

  828. the breaking point.

  829. We know that he

  830. was under such

  831. physical duress

  832. that his body

  833. literally sweat

  834. blood in the

  835. garden as he

  836. prayed.

  837. prayed.

  838. Here's a good

  839. time for a

  840. reminder that

  841. we have to

  842. remember as we

  843. look at these

  844. accounts of the

  845. cross that this

  846. man, Jesus,

  847. is both God

  848. and man.

  849. This is God

  850. in the flesh,

  851. God incarnate.

  852. The word of God

  853. became flesh and

  854. dwelt among us.

  855. Jesus is both

  856. God and man,

  857. not 50% one or

  858. the other.

  859. He is 100%

  860. God,

  861. 100% man.

  862. the eternal

  863. son of God

  864. took on our

  865. physical weakness,

  866. stepped into our

  867. physical weakness

  868. in order to

  869. redeem us.

  870. And we see his

  871. humanity on full

  872. display here as

  873. we march to the

  874. cross in the

  875. suffering.

  876. The eternal

  877. all sufficient

  878. son of God

  879. who in his

  880. divine nature

  881. has never needed

  882. anything.

  883. Here in his

  884. humanity, in his

  885. human nature,

  886. says I thirst.

  887. And again,

  888. John shows us

  889. that Jesus is

  890. quoting again

  891. here from the

  892. Psalms.

  893. This time,

  894. Psalm chapter

    Psalms 69 chapter mention

  895. 69.

  896. I'll start at

  897. verse 16 of

  898. Psalm chapter

    Psalms 69 chapter mention

  899. 69.

  900. Answer me,

  901. O Lord,

  902. for your

  903. steadfast love

  904. is good.

  905. According to

  906. your abundant

  907. mercy,

  908. turn to me.

  909. Hide not your

  910. face from your

  911. servant, for I am

  912. in distress.

  913. Make haste to

  914. answer me.

  915. Draw near to

  916. my soul.

  917. Redeem me.

  918. Ransom me

  919. because of my

  920. enemies.

  921. Verse 19.

  922. You know my

  923. reproach and my

  924. shame and my

  925. dishonor.

  926. My foes are

  927. all known to

  928. you.

  929. Reproaches have

  930. broken my heart

  931. so that I am in

  932. despair.

  933. I looked for

  934. pity, but there

  935. was none.

  936. And for

  937. comforters, but I

  938. found none.

  939. Listen to this,

  940. verse 21.

  941. They gave me

  942. poison for food

  943. and for my

  944. thirst.

  945. They gave me

  946. sour wine to

  947. drink.

  948. And so John

  949. says, back in

  950. our passage at

  951. verse 29, a

  952. jar full of

  953. sour wine stood

  954. there.

  955. So they put a

  956. sponge full of

  957. the sour wine on

  958. a hyssop branch

  959. and they held it

  960. to his mouth.

  961. For my thirst,

  962. they gave me

  963. sour wine to

  964. drink.

  965. Does this sound

  966. like coincidence

  967. to you?

  968. Maybe.

  969. And maybe you

  970. could chalk up

  971. the garment

  972. thing to

  973. coincidence.

  974. Maybe.

  975. But this is at

  976. least a little

  977. bit odd, isn't

  978. it?

  979. These Old

  980. Testament passages

  981. of these events

  982. dividing garments,

  983. sour wine, and

  984. here it's happening

  985. in real life and

  986. in real history and

  987. real time.

  988. John is witnessing

  989. these things,

  990. recording them

  991. for us and he

  992. says, this is a

  993. little bit odd,

  994. isn't it?

  995. Isn't this a

  996. little bit more

  997. than coincidence?

  998. Just think about

  999. it for a minute.

1000. I know we get so

  1001. used to what we

  1002. know from the

  1003. scriptures, but when

  1004. you zoom out and

  1005. just recognize this,

  1006. these are Psalms of

  1007. David all the way

  1008. back here in the

  1009. Old Testament.

  1010. Psalms of David,

  1011. the king, Old

  1012. Testament David,

  1013. king of Israel,

  1014. David.

  1015. He wrote these

  1016. Psalms roughly a

  1017. thousand years before

  1018. Jesus was born.

  1019. But John is saying

  1020. that this Psalm of

  1021. King David all the

  1022. way back here in

  1023. the Old Testament

  1024. was pointing forward

  1025. to a greater,

  1026. truer, more

  1027. accurate fulfillment

  1028. in the true

  1029. king.

  1030. John is showing

  1031. us Jesus isn't

  1032. just quoting these

  1033. Psalms, he is

  1034. fulfilling them.

  1035. they are written

  1036. about him.

  1037. I love Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  1038. chapter 24.

1039. That may be one of

  1040. my favorite chapters

  1041. in the whole Bible.

  1042. After the resurrection

  1043. of Christ, he goes,

  1044. he walks with his

  1045. disciples on the road

  1046. to Emmaus.

  1047. His disciples are kept

  1048. from recognizing him.

  1049. They're discouraged by

  1050. his death.

  1051. They're processing all

  1052. these things that have

  1053. happened.

1054. And he says to them

1055. in verse 25 of Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  1056. chapter 24,

  1057. O foolish ones

  1058. and slow of heart

  1059. to believe all

  1060. that the prophets

  1061. have spoken.

  1062. Was it not necessary

  1063. that the Christ

  1064. should suffer these

  1065. things and enter

  1066. into his glory?

  1067. And beginning with

  1068. Moses

  1069. and all the

  1070. prophets,

  1071. he interpreted to

  1072. them in all the

  1073. scriptures the things

  1074. concerning himself.

  1075. Did you hear that?

  1076. beginning with Moses.

  1077. That's where Jesus

  1078. went when he wanted

  1079. to explain to his

  1080. disciples the

  1081. significance of the

  1082. cross.

  1083. You know where he

  1084. went?

  1085. Moses and the

  1086. prophets and all

  1087. the Old Testament

  1088. scriptures and he

  1089. interpreted to them

  1090. all the things

  1091. concerning himself.

  1092. What would I give

1093. to be a part of

  1094. that Bible study?

  1095. There are

  1096. There's a pastor

  1097. out of Atlanta.

  1098. A very popular

  1099. pastor who

  1100. over the past

  1101. several years

  1102. he made a claim

  1103. that said,

  1104. you know,

  1105. to reach the

  1106. current generation

  1107. we really ought to

  1108. unhitch our

  1109. Christianity from

  1110. the New Testament.

  1111. Have you heard

  1112. this?

  1113. excuse me,

  1114. from the Old

  1115. Testament.

  1116. In order to reach

  1117. our current climate,

  1118. our current

  1119. generation,

  1120. we have to

  1121. unhitch Christianity

  1122. from the Old

  1123. Testament.

  1124. I hope you see

  1125. the point that

  1126. John is making

  1127. is exactly the

  1128. opposite.

  1129. Christianity

  1130. unhitched from

  1131. the Old Testament

  1132. isn't Christianity

  1133. at all.

  1134. We cannot have

  1135. an unhitched

  1136. Christianity.

  1137. Our gospel

  1138. is thoroughly

  1139. hitched to

  1140. all of the

  1141. scriptures,

  1142. prophets,

  1143. Moses,

  1144. the Psalms,

  1145. all the way

  1146. from Genesis

  1147. to Malachi.

  1148. If it's not

  1149. properly hitched,

  1150. it's not

  1151. believable.

  1152. The gospel,

  1153. the death of

  1154. Christ,

  1155. His resurrection

  1156. is rooted

  1157. in an eternal

  1158. plan of God

  1159. that He has

  1160. worked out

  1161. in human history

  1162. and foretold

  1163. from the very

  1164. first pages

  1165. of Genesis.

  1166. Jesus.

  1167. The point

  1168. that He was

  1169. making and

  1170. the point

  1171. that John

  1172. is making

  1173. is this.

  1174. All the

  1175. scriptures

  1176. are about

  1177. Jesus.

  1178. All the

  1179. Old Testament

  1180. scriptures

  1181. have been

  1182. talking about

  1183. His death

  1184. and His

  1185. resurrection,

  1186. the reign

  1187. of the King.

  1188. The cross

  1189. is not a

  1190. tragic accident.

  1191. The cross

  1192. is a perfect

  1193. fulfillment

  1194. of the eternal

  1195. plan of God.

  1196. Which is why

  1197. here in verse

  1198. 30 of our

  1199. passage,

  1200. John says

  1201. this,

  1202. when Jesus

  1203. had received

  1204. the sour

  1205. wine,

  1206. He said,

  1207. it is

  1208. finished.

  1209. And He

  1210. bowed His

  1211. head and

  1212. gave up

  1213. His spirit.

  1214. What is

  1215. finished?

  1216. If we

  1217. remove the

  1218. Old Testament

  1219. scriptures,

  1220. what in the

  1221. world is

  1222. Jesus saying

  1223. is finished?

  1224. That word

  1225. there, it

  1226. means fulfillment,

  1227. it means

  1228. completion,

  1229. it speaks

  1230. about the

  1231. complete carrying

  1232. out of a

  1233. task given

  1234. to you

  1235. by an

  1236. authority.

  1237. This is

  1238. the fulfillment,

  1239. the complete

  1240. fulfillment of

  1241. the task that

  1242. was given to

  1243. Jesus by the

  1244. Father.

  1245. It means

  1246. His suffering

  1247. is finished.

  1248. His

  1249. obedience,

  1250. the plan of

  1251. God written

  1252. and foretold in

  1253. all the scriptures,

  1254. the plan of

  1255. God for the

  1256. Son of God

  1257. to bear the

  1258. wrath of God

  1259. for the people

  1260. of God

  1261. is finished.

  1262. His suffering

  1263. on behalf of

  1264. sinners and the

  1265. place of sinners

  1266. is finished,

  1267. which means

  1268. for us who

  1269. bowed the

  1270. knee to the

  1271. crucified King,

  1272. for us it

  1273. is finished.

  1274. Our separation

  1275. from God

  1276. is finished.

  1277. The curse of

  1278. sin for you

  1279. who believe

  1280. is finished.

  1281. The weight of

  1282. sin and guilt

  1283. that we used

  1284. to bear,

  1285. the sting of

  1286. death,

  1287. the powers of

  1288. darkness that

  1289. stand against

  1290. you for us

  1291. who are in

  1292. Christ,

  1293. it is finished,

  1294. is nailed to

  1295. the cross and

  1296. I bear it no

  1297. more as we

  1298. sing often.

  1299. That's glorious

  1300. news.

  1301. John tells us

  1302. in verse 31

  1303. that since it

  1304. was the day of

  1305. preparation so

  1306. that the bodies

  1307. would not remain

  1308. on the cross on

  1309. the Sabbath for

  1310. that Sabbath was

  1311. a high day,

  1312. the Jews asked

  1313. Pilate that their

  1314. legs might be

  1315. broken and that

  1316. they might be

  1317. taken away.

  1318. Again, the

  1319. normal practice

  1320. for a Roman

  1321. crucifixion was

  1322. to just let the

  1323. victim hang on

  1324. the cross until

  1325. they died.

  1326. And even then,

  1327. they would let

  1328. the bodies stay

  1329. and be eaten

  1330. by the birds.

  1331. They're in the

  1332. sight of all

  1333. the people.

  1334. Out of

  1335. observance of

  1336. the upcoming

  1337. Sabbath day and

  1338. that being a

  1339. high holy day

  1340. with Passover

  1341. approaching,

  1342. the Jews asked

  1343. Pilate to go

  1344. ahead and break

  1345. the legs of

  1346. the criminals,

  1347. get it over

  1348. with.

  1349. This would

  1350. keep them

  1351. from being

  1352. able to push

  1353. up the weight

  1354. of their bodies

  1355. and essentially

  1356. with their legs

  1357. broken,

  1358. they would

  1359. suffocate there

  1360. on the cross.

  1361. And they

  1362. started with

  1363. the other two

  1364. thieves on

  1365. either side,

  1366. but as they

  1367. made their way

  1368. to Jesus,

  1369. they discovered

  1370. that this man

  1371. was already

  1372. dead.

  1373. So instead of

  1374. breaking his

  1375. legs,

  1376. says they

  1377. pierced his

  1378. side with a

  1379. spear and at

  1380. once there

  1381. came out

  1382. blood and

  1383. water.

  1384. We often

  1385. sing another

  1386. song,

  1387. a rock of

  1388. ages cleft

  1389. for me.

  1390. Let me hide

  1391. myself in

  1392. thee, let

  1393. the water

  1394. and the

  1395. blood from

  1396. thy wounded

  1397. side which

  1398. flowed be

  1399. of sin the

  1400. double cure,

  1401. save from

  1402. wrath and

  1403. make me

  1404. pure.

  1405. And again

  1406. John says

  1407. that this,

  1408. even this,

  1409. down to the

  1410. very finest

  1411. details of the

  1412. last seconds of

  1413. Jesus' earthly

  1414. life before

  1415. the resurrection,

  1416. all of this

  1417. happened in

  1418. fulfillment of

  1419. the scriptures.

  1420. He says in

  1421. verse 35,

  1422. he who saw

  1423. it has borne

  1424. witness,

  1425. his testimony

  1426. is true,

  1427. he knows he's

  1428. telling the

  1429. truth that you

  1430. also may

  1431. believe.

  1432. It's as if

  1433. he's saying

  1434. maybe you can

  1435. write off the

  1436. first as

  1437. coincidence,

  1438. maybe you can

  1439. write off the

  1440. second thing as

  1441. coincidence,

  1442. but this is so

  1443. clearly in line

  1444. with scripture,

  1445. it's so clearly

  1446. a fulfillment of

  1447. the divine word,

  1448. I was there and

  1449. I saw them

  1450. pierce his side

  1451. with a spear,

  1452. and you gotta do

  1453. something with

  1454. that.

  1455. He won't let us

  1456. ignore it,

  1457. will he?

  1458. So John says

  1459. this is exhibit

  1460. C and D,

  1461. verse 36,

  1462. says these things

  1463. took place that

  1464. the scriptures

  1465. might be fulfilled,

  1466. not one of his

  1467. bones will be

  1468. broken.

  1469. And again,

  1470. another scripture

  1471. says they will

  1472. look on him

  1473. whom they

  1474. have pierced.

  1475. He's shown us

  1476. two from the

  1477. Psalms,

  1478. and now in this

  1479. third fulfillment,

  1480. exhibit C,

  1481. he takes you all

  1482. the way back to

  1483. Exodus,

  1484. to Moses,

  1485. Exodus 12,

    Exodus 12:46

  1486. verse 46,

  1487. where the law

  1488. was given,

  1489. instructions for

  1490. the Passover

  1491. lamb,

  1492. preparing the

  1493. Passover lamb

  1494. for the sacrifice,

  1495. and it says of

  1496. the Passover lamb

  1497. that you shall not

  1498. break any of

  1499. its bones.

  1500. Now John the

  1501. Baptist has

  1502. hinted about this

  1503. already,

  1504. all the way back

  1505. in chapter 1,

  1506. as he saw Jesus,

  1507. you remember what

  1508. he said?

  1509. Behold the,

  1510. what?

  1511. The lamb of

  1512. God,

  1513. who takes away

  1514. the sin of the

  1515. world.

  1516. John the Baptist

  1517. understood,

  1518. he's been talking

  1519. about this all the

  1520. way back in

  1521. chapter 1,

  1522. and now,

  1523. here on the

  1524. Friday before

  1525. the Passover,

  1526. John tells us

  1527. that the true

  1528. Passover lamb

  1529. is sacrificed

  1530. to take away

  1531. our sin,

  1532. not one of

  1533. his bones

  1534. are broken.

  1535. Is it coincidence?

  1536. All the way

  1537. back to Moses,

  1538. he says it's not

  1539. only what they

  1540. didn't do,

  1541. it's also what

  1542. they did do,

  1543. it's also

  1544. fulfillment.

  1545. They didn't break

  1546. his bones,

  1547. that's fulfillment

  1548. in Moses,

  1549. but they did

  1550. pierce his side,

  1551. and John says

  1552. that's fulfillment,

  1553. of Zechariah 12

    Zechariah 12:10

  1554. verse 10,

  1555. which says,

  1556. they will look

  1557. on him whom

  1558. they have

  1559. pierced.

  1560. Do you see

  1561. the case

  1562. that's being

  1563. made here?

  1564. Our

  1565. religion,

  1566. Christianity,

  1567. our belief

  1568. in a sovereign

  1569. God,

  1570. and a reigning

  1571. King,

  1572. Jesus Christ,

  1573. that is a

  1574. thoroughly

  1575. founded and

  1576. reasonable belief

  1577. because of

  1578. the scriptures.

  1579. You begin to

  1580. look at all

  1581. the evidence,

  1582. all the many

  1583. scriptures,

  1584. the way they

  1585. weave together

  1586. to find their

  1587. fulfillment perfectly

  1588. to a T,

  1589. and just this

  1590. one man and

  1591. the events of

  1592. his life,

  1593. his death,

  1594. and soon to

  1595. be his

  1596. resurrection,

  1597. when you take

  1598. all of this

  1599. into account,

  1600. you start to

  1601. wonder,

  1602. how can all

  1603. of this be

  1604. accidental?

  1605. How could

  1606. this all be

  1607. just coincidence?

  1608. What are the

  1609. odds of all

  1610. of this coming

  1611. together exactly

  1612. as the

  1613. Old Testament

  1614. said that

  1615. it would?

  1616. I've mentioned

  1617. this study

  1618. before.

  1619. It's appropriate,

  1620. I think,

  1621. to mention it

  1622. again this

  1623. morning.

  1624. Dr. Peter

  1625. Stoner,

  1626. he was the

  1627. former chairman

  1628. of the

  1629. Department of

  1630. Mathematics

  1631. and Astronomy

  1632. at Pasadena

  1633. City College

  1634. and a believer,

  1635. and he set

  1636. out to

  1637. calculate the

  1638. mathematical

  1639. probability,

  1640. the mathematical

  1641. probability of

  1642. just one

  1643. person

  1644. fulfilling

  1645. just eight

  1646. of the

  1647. clearest

  1648. messianic

  1649. prophecies.

  1650. So he

  1651. looked through

  1652. all of the

  1653. messianic

  1654. prophecies of

  1655. the Old

  1656. Testament,

  1657. and there

  1658. are way

  1659. more than

  1660. eight,

  1661. but he

  1662. whittled it

  1663. down to

  1664. make this

  1665. as friendly

  1666. as he

  1667. possibly

  1668. could to

  1669. skeptics

  1670. and non-believers

  1671. and said,

  1672. let's just

  1673. read eight

  1674. statements here

  1675. from the Old

  1676. Testament and

  1677. calculate the

  1678. probability that

  1679. those eight

  1680. statements would

  1681. come true

  1682. and be fulfilled

  1683. in just one

  1684. man.

  1685. And what he

  1686. determined

  1687. was this,

  1688. he said,

  1689. the chance

  1690. that any

  1691. one man

  1692. might have

  1693. fulfilled all

  1694. eight prophecies

  1695. is one

  1696. in ten to

  1697. the seventeenth.

  1698. That would be

  1699. one in,

  1700. I can't even

  1701. read this number,

  1702. one in one

  1703. hundred quadrillion.

  1704. That's one

  1705. with seventeen

  1706. zeros at the

  1707. end,

  1708. right?

  1709. And we can

  1710. hardly imagine,

  1711. our minds

  1712. can't really

  1713. comprehend

  1714. that type

  1715. of number.

  1716. One in

  1717. one hundred

  1718. quadrillion.

  1719. Dr. Stoner

  1720. goes on,

  1721. he says,

  1722. if we were

  1723. to take

  1724. one in

  1725. one hundred

  1726. quadrillion,

  1727. if we were

  1728. to take

  1729. ten to

  1730. the seventeenth

  1731. silver dollars

  1732. and lay

  1733. them all

  1734. over the

  1735. face of

  1736. the state

  1737. of Texas,

  1738. they would

  1739. cover the

  1740. entire state

  1741. of Texas

  1742. two feet

  1743. deep.

  1744. Now,

  1745. take one

  1746. of those

  1747. silver dollars,

  1748. and mark

  1749. it,

  1750. get a

  1751. sharpie,

  1752. mark it

  1753. up,

  1754. however

  1755. you'd like

  1756. to mark

  1757. it,

  1758. throw it

  1759. back in

  1760. the mask,

  1761. stir up

  1762. the whole

  1763. lot

  1764. thoroughly,

  1765. blindfold a

  1766. man and

  1767. tell him

  1768. he can

  1769. walk as

  1770. far as

  1771. he'd

  1772. possibly

  1773. like,

  1774. as far

  1775. as he'd

  1776. wish,

  1777. but he

  1778. must pick

  1779. up that

  1780. one

  1781. marked

  1782. silver

  1783. dollar.

  1784. What

  1785. is the

  1786. chance

  1787. he would

  1788. have

  1789. of getting

  1790. the right

  1791. one?

  1792. He says

  1793. he would

  1794. have just

  1795. the same

  1796. chance

  1797. that the

  1798. prophets

  1799. would have

  1800. had of

  1801. writing those

  1802. eight

  1803. prophecies,

  1804. and having

  1805. them all

  1806. come true

  1807. in any

  1808. one man.

  1809. See,

  1810. the point

  1811. John is

  1812. making is

  1813. that Jesus'

  1814. death is

  1815. not accidental.

  1816. This is

  1817. fulfillment of

  1818. the eternal

  1819. plan of

  1820. God.

  1821. The case,

  1822. I believe the

  1823. case is clear.

  1824. This man,

  1825. Jesus,

  1826. is exactly

  1827. who he

  1828. claimed to

  1829. be.

  1830. He is the

  1831. promised king,

  1832. king,

  1833. and if

  1834. that's

  1835. true,

  1836. then now,

  1837. now that

  1838. that's

  1839. settled,

  1840. now we

  1841. can begin

  1842. to ask

  1843. the question,

  1844. well,

  1845. what does

  1846. that mean

  1847. for me?

  1848. If you're

  1849. with us

  1850. and you're

  1851. not a

  1852. believer,

  1853. what that

  1854. means for

  1855. you,

  1856. this is a

  1857. call to

  1858. repent and

  1859. bow the

  1860. knee to

  1861. King

  1862. Jesus.

  1863. It is a

  1864. call for

  1865. you to

  1866. stop raging

  1867. against his

  1868. rightful rule

  1869. in your

  1870. life and

  1871. in the

  1872. world and

  1873. to humble

  1874. yourself,

  1875. if you

  1876. still have

  1877. breath in

  1878. your lungs,

  1879. you still

  1880. have the

  1881. opportunity

  1882. now like

  1883. the thief

  1884. on a

  1885. cross to

  1886. say,

  1887. I believe

  1888. you're the

  1889. king,

  1890. would you

  1891. please forgive

  1892. me and

  1893. carry me

  1894. into your

  1895. kingdom?

  1896. And for

  1897. the believer,

  1898. church,

  1899. the fact that

  1900. Jesus Christ

  1901. is king,

  1902. that's reason

  1903. to rejoice

  1904. at this

  1905. death on a

  1906. cross that

  1907. we're so

  1908. familiar with,

  1909. the death

  1910. of Jesus

  1911. that we

  1912. read about

  1913. weekly and

  1914. especially

  1915. here at

  1916. Easter,

  1917. is not

  1918. accidental,

  1919. he did

  1920. not die

  1921. a meaningless

  1922. death,

  1923. he died

  1924. to conquer

  1925. our enemies,

  1926. to deliver

  1927. us out of

  1928. the domain

  1929. of darkness

  1930. and to

  1931. transfer us

  1932. into the

  1933. kingdom of

  1934. God.

  1935. He came

  1936. to perfectly

  1937. obey in

  1938. our place

  1939. and to

  1940. die in

  1941. our place

  1942. so that

  1943. he can

  1944. say on

  1945. our behalf

  1946. that it

  1947. is

  1948. finished.

  1949. The

  1950. Westminster

  1951. Shorter

  1952. Catechism

  1953. asks the

  1954. question,

  1955. how does

  1956. Christ

  1957. execute

  1958. the office

  1959. of a

  1960. king?

  1961. And it

  1962. answers,

  1963. Christ

  1964. executes

  1965. the office

  1966. of a

  1967. king in

  1968. subduing

  1969. us to

  1970. himself,

  1971. in ruling

  1972. and defending

  1973. us,

  1974. in restraining

  1975. and conquering

  1976. all his

  1977. and our

  1978. enemies.

  1979. John

  1980. closes

  1981. this chapter

  1982. out by

  1983. telling us

  1984. about Jesus'

  1985. burial.

  1986. He says

  1987. in verse

  1988. 38 that

  1989. after these

  1990. things,

  1991. Joseph

  1992. of

  1993. Arimathea,

  1994. who was

  1995. a disciple

  1996. of Jesus,

  1997. but secretly

  1998. for fear

  1999. of the

  2000. Jews,

  2001. asked Pilate

  2002. that he

  2003. might take

  2004. away the

  2005. body of

  2006. Jesus.

  2007. And Pilate

  2008. gave him

  2009. permission,

  2010. so he

  2011. came and

  2012. took away

  2013. his body.

  2014. And Nicodemus

  2015. also,

  2016. who earlier

  2017. had come to

  2018. Jesus by

  2019. night,

  2020. came bringing

  2021. a mixture

  2022. of myrrh

  2023. and aloes,

  2024. about 75

  2025. pounds in

  2026. weight.

  2027. So they

  2028. took the

  2029. body of

  2030. Jesus and

  2031. bound it

  2032. in linen

  2033. cloths with

  2034. the spices,

  2035. as is the

  2036. burial custom

  2037. of the

  2038. Jews.

  2039. And now,

  2040. in the place

  2041. where he

  2042. was crucified,

  2043. there was a

  2044. garden,

  2045. and in the

  2046. garden a

  2047. new tomb,

  2048. in which no

  2049. one had yet

  2050. been laid.

  2051. So,

  2052. because of the

  2053. Jewish day of

  2054. preparation,

  2055. since the

  2056. tomb was

  2057. close at

  2058. hand,

  2059. they laid

  2060. Jesus there.

  2061. Why do you

  2062. think John

  2063. tells us about

  2064. these two

  2065. men?

  2066. why do you

  2067. think he

  2068. thinks it's

  2069. important for

  2070. us to know

  2071. about Joseph

  2072. of Arimathea

  2073. and Nicodemus?

  2074. Joseph of

  2075. Arimathea,

  2076. John says,

  2077. was a secret

  2078. disciple of

  2079. Jesus for

  2080. fear of the

  2081. Jews,

  2082. he said.

  2083. He was a

  2084. member of the

  2085. Sanhedrin,

  2086. and he feared

  2087. what the Jews

  2088. might think of

  2089. his loyalty to

  2090. Jesus,

  2091. but here in

  2092. the aftermath

  2093. of the

  2094. cross,

  2095. it seems like

  2096. something has

  2097. changed,

  2098. doesn't it?

  2099. That fear

  2100. seems to have

  2101. turned into

  2102. boldness.

  2103. He goes

  2104. straight up to

  2105. Pilate himself

  2106. and asks if

  2107. he might be

  2108. able to take

  2109. away the

  2110. body of

  2111. Jesus.

  2112. And

  2113. Nicodemus,

  2114. John says,

  2115. this is the

  2116. same Nicodemus

  2117. that we saw

  2118. earlier from

  2119. John chapter

    John 3 chapter mention

  2120. 3.

  2121. Do you

  2122. remember

  2123. Nicodemus?

  2124. Nicodemus who

  2125. came to

  2126. Jesus by

  2127. night,

  2128. out of

  2129. fear,

  2130. possibly,

  2131. out of

  2132. shame,

  2133. possibly,

  2134. out of

  2135. embarrassment,

  2136. came to

  2137. him by

  2138. night for

  2139. fear of

  2140. the Jews,

  2141. for fear

  2142. of being

  2143. publicly

  2144. associated

  2145. with this

  2146. man,

  2147. Jesus.

  2148. Here Nicodemus

  2149. came to

  2150. anoint the

  2151. king.

  2152. It says he

  2153. anointed him

  2154. with how

  2155. much?

  2156. 75 pounds.

  2157. You know the

  2158. average Jewish

  2159. burial only

  2160. called for

  2161. five pounds

  2162. of spices?

  2163. And Nicodemus

  2164. apparently brought

  2165. 15 times that

  2166. much.

  2167. Something has

  2168. changed in

  2169. Nicodemus

  2170. and in

  2171. Joseph.

  2172. Here's the

  2173. point.

  2174. These two

  2175. men have

  2176. apparently

  2177. become

  2178. convinced

  2179. that this

  2180. is the

  2181. king.

  2182. And if

  2183. he's the

  2184. king,

  2185. why should

  2186. I fear

  2187. what anybody

  2188. else might

  2189. say about

  2190. my loyalty

  2191. to him?

  2192. Why should

  2193. I withhold

  2194. honor from

  2195. him?

  2196. Why should

  2197. I be scared

  2198. to be

  2199. associated

  2200. publicly

  2201. with him?

  2202. If he

  2203. is the

  2204. king,

  2205. then he

  2206. demands

  2207. my

  2208. loyalty,

  2209. he demands

  2210. my praise,

  2211. he demands

  2212. my honor,

  2213. and he

  2214. demands my

  2215. life.

  2216. Something's

  2217. changed about

  2218. these men.

  2219. They've become

  2220. convinced that

  2221. Christ is

  2222. king.

  2223. Their lives

  2224. are different

  2225. for it.

  2226. as we

  2227. close out

  2228. this passage,

  2229. I think

  2230. the question

  2231. we have to

  2232. ask ourselves

  2233. is what

  2234. about you?

  2235. What about

  2236. you?

  2237. Have you

  2238. become

  2239. convinced

  2240. that this

  2241. man Jesus

  2242. is who

  2243. he says

  2244. he is?

  2245. Is your

  2246. heart

  2247. convinced

  2248. that this

  2249. man Jesus

  2250. is the

  2251. king?

  2252. And if

  2253. he is,

  2254. then have

  2255. you bowed

  2256. the knee

  2257. to him

  2258. in submission?

  2259. Have you

  2260. brought your

  2261. heart to

  2262. him and

  2263. committed

  2264. yourself to

  2265. him to

  2266. say,

  2267. my life

  2268. is yours,

  2269. I want

  2270. to give

  2271. you

  2272. everything

  2273. I am?

  2274. These

  2275. men were

  2276. convinced.

  2277. And we

  2278. close out

  2279. this chapter

  2280. with Jesus

  2281. in a tomb,

  2282. but if we

  2283. know our

  2284. Old Testament,

  2285. we know

  2286. that this

  2287. is not

  2288. the end.

  2289. I'll close

  2290. by reading

  2291. Isaiah 53

  2292. for us.

  2293. It says

  2294. this,

  2295. Yet it

  2296. was the

  2297. will of

  2298. the Lord

  2299. to crush

  2300. him.

  2301. He has

  2302. put him

  2303. to grief.

  2304. When his

  2305. soul makes

  2306. an offering

  2307. for guilt,

  2308. he shall

  2309. see his

  2310. offspring,

  2311. he shall

  2312. prolong his

  2313. days.

  2314. The will

  2315. of the

  2316. Lord shall

  2317. prosper in

  2318. his hand.

  2319. Out of

  2320. the anguish

  2321. of his

  2322. soul,

  2323. he shall

  2324. see and

  2325. be satisfied.

  2326. By his

  2327. knowledge shall

  2328. the righteous

  2329. one,

  2330. my servant,

  2331. make many

  2332. to be

  2333. accounted

  2334. righteous,

  2335. and he

  2336. shall bear

  2337. their

  2338. iniquities.

  2339. let's

  2340. pray.

  2341. Lord,

  2342. we praise

  2343. you for

  2344. the death

  2345. of Christ

  2346. the King.

  2347. This was

  2348. not a

  2349. surprise to

  2350. you,

  2351. this was

  2352. no accident.

  2353. The King

  2354. himself laid

  2355. down his

  2356. life willingly

  2357. for our

  2358. good,

  2359. for our

  2360. salvation.

  2361. We thank

  2362. you for the

  2363. scriptures that

  2364. so clearly

  2365. point us

  2366. forward towards

  2367. Jesus,

  2368. and we

  2369. pray,

  2370. Father,

  2371. that you

  2372. would give

  2373. us eyes

  2374. to see

  2375. and ears

  2376. to hear

  2377. what you've

  2378. written.

  2379. Lord,

  2380. we pray

  2381. that we,

  2382. Father,

  2383. would bow

  2384. the knee

  2385. to King

  2386. Jesus.

  2387. We pray

  2388. this in

  2389. Jesus'

  2390. name.

  2391. Amen.

  2392. Amen.
