  1. Well, let's open our Bibles one more time to the Gospel of John, John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  2. We're concluding our series in John's Gospel this morning, if you can believe it.

  3. And so if you would, turn to John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  4. If you didn't bring a Bible with you, that's okay.

  5. We have Bibles provided for you in the seat backs in front of you.

  6. If it's not in front of you, look to your left or to your right.

  7. There ought to be one nearby.

  8. But I always encourage you to please have a copy of God's Word open in front of you.

  9. I don't want you just to hear it from my voice, through my lips.

  10. I want you to see it with your own eyes on the pages of God's Word.

  11. John chapter 21, when you found that, if you would, let's stand together in honor of the reading of God's Word.

    John 21 chapter mention

  12. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

  13. And he revealed himself in this way.

  14. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the twin, Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.

  15. Simon Peter said to them,

  16. I am going fishing.

  17. They said to him, We will go with you.

  18. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  19. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

  20. Jesus said to them, Children, do you have any fish?

  21. They answered him, No.

  22. He said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.

  23. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because of the quantity of fish.

  24. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, It is the Lord.

  25. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work,

  26. and threw himself into the sea.

  27. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish,

  28. for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

  29. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place with fish laid out on it and bread.

  30. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.

  31. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore full of large fish, 153 of them.

  32. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.

  33. And Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast.

  34. Now none of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you?

  35. They knew it was the Lord.

  36. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so would the fish.

  37. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  38. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  39. Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?

  40. He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  41. He said to him, Feed my lambs.

  42. He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  43. He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  44. He said to him, Tend my sheep.

  45. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  46. Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me?

  47. And he said to him, Lord, you know everything.

  48. You know that I love you.

  49. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep.

  50. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted.

  51. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.

  52. This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.

  53. And after saying this, he said to him, Follow me.

  54. Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them,

  55. the one who had also leaned back against him during the supper and had said,

  56. Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?

  57. When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, Lord, what about this man?

  58. Jesus said to him, If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?

  59. You follow me.

  60. So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die.

  61. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die.

  62. But if it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?

  63. This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things and who has written these things.

  64. And we know that his testimony is true.

  65. Now there are also many other things that Jesus did.

  66. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

  67. This is the word of God.

  68. Let's pray once more.

  69. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  70. And we pray even as we've already sung, God, reveal your glory through the preaching of your word.

  71. Would you show us Christ this morning and give us eyes to see, give us hearts to accept and believe what you've written.

  72. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  73. Amen.

  74. You may be seated.

  75. 47 sermons in the Gospel of John.

  76. Spread out among 62 Sundays with a break here and there.

  77. 21 chapters.

  78. Some of you probably wish it could go on a bit longer.

  79. Many of you are probably wondering what more could possibly be said.

  80. Well, if we take John literally here at the ending of this Gospel, he says the world itself can't contain the books that could be written about this man Jesus.

  81. We've seen time and time and time again, haven't we?

  82. The example after example after example, story after story after story, written about this man Jesus.

  83. John is trying to get us to see clearly who he is.

  84. And he's written with an aim in mind.

  85. You ought to know this by now.

  86. Chapter 20, verse 31.

  87. These things are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

  88. And that by believing, you may have life in his name.

  89. As we bring our series to a close this morning, as we wrap up the Gospel of John,

  90. really this shouldn't be many new things to you.

  91. It shouldn't be new information to you.

  92. But rather, John's putting the question to us once again, do you believe?

  93. Have you gotten the message?

  94. To that end, he shares two final stories of the person and work of Jesus this morning.

  95. This will be our outline.

  96. If you're taking notes, this will help you to follow along.

  97. We have two final stories of the work of Jesus this morning.

  98. We see Jesus reveals himself to his people.

  99. And Jesus restores his people to himself.

  100. Jesus reveals himself to his people.

  101. And Jesus restores his people to himself.

  102. First, we see here in verses 1 through 14, Jesus once again reveals himself to his people.

  103. All throughout John's Gospel, we've seen him revealing himself, haven't we?

  104. Peeling back the layer of who he is.

  105. We've seen signs and wonders of what he's done that reveal who he is.

  106. We've heard his own statements, these I am statements revealing who he is.

  107. And we've seen the disciples, haven't we, progress in faith,

  108. especially as we come to the aftermath of the resurrection of Jesus.

  109. We see them seeing, beginning to see clearly who Jesus is.

  110. Look there with me to verse 1.

  111. Jesus has just appeared to his disciples twice already after his resurrection,

  112. once without Thomas and then a second time with Thomas present.

  113. And now John says that after this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

  114. And John says he revealed himself in this way.

  115. The disciples were going fishing.

  116. Peter, ever the vocal leader of the disciples, says,

  117. I'm going fishing, who wants to come?

  118. And it says Thomas and Nathaniel of Cana, the sons of Zebedee, James and John,

  119. and two others came with him, that's seven in all,

  120. which would not have been an unusual thing, right?

  121. Peter, James, and John were all fishermen when Jesus called them to follow him.

  122. They would have been used to a long night out on the sea fishing.

  123. But what was unusual for them this evening was that after a night full of fishing all night long,

  124. they had nothing to show for it.

  125. And John says they came back and they had no fish all night long,

  126. casting nets, casting nets, casting nets, and nothing.

  127. Which wouldn't be strange if I was in the boat, right?

  128. That's how it normally goes when I go fishing.

  129. But these men, these were experienced fishermen.

  130. They weren't fishing with a rod and a hook and a worm.

  131. They were casting nets.

  132. They were expecting to haul in a number of fish.

  133. But John says the night came and went.

  134. Morning was approaching and they caught nothing.

  135. Very unusual.

  136. That's not the only unusual thing that happened, was it?

  137. And to make matters worse, there on the shore,

  138. some strange man calls out to them,

  139. children, have you caught any fish?

  140. Now maybe I just imagine this,

  141. that maybe they had a more gracious tone than I would have had

  142. after a night without sleep, without anything to show for it.

  143. But they answered and said, no, we have no fish.

  144. And so the strange man on the shore tells them,

  145. well, try casting the net on the right side of the boat.

  146. And whether out of despair or desperation or defeat, I don't know,

  147. they cast the net on the other side.

  148. And all of a sudden, just imagine it,

  149. after a night of fruitless labor,

  150. all of a sudden they go to pull in the net empty as before,

  151. and this time it won't budge.

  152. It's weighted.

  153. It's full.

  154. It's full of fish.

  155. After all their efforts, that whole night they listened to the man on the shore.

  156. They tossed the net off the right side.

  157. And this time they can't even pull the net up into the boat.

  158. It won't budge.

  159. Something unusual and incredible has happened.

  160. And John says that it was here at this point,

  161. John, the disciple whom Jesus loved,

  162. he realized who this mysterious man on the shore must be.

  163. And he proclaims.

  164. He says, it is the Lord.

  165. He's back.

  166. Just imagine the joy and the excitement of that moment.

  167. The risen Lord Jesus is right there on the shore,

  168. just a hundred yards away.

  169. He's back.

  170. He's come to visit us once again.

  171. One of the joys of being a father of kids that are still young

  172. is that they're still excited to see me.

  173. Often.

  174. A lot of the time.

  175. Right?

  176. And I love going to the preschool pickup line at their school

  177. and seeing the kids just charge out of the door

  178. and run into the arms of their parents.

  179. And some of them just leap in for a hug.

  180. Other ones, they jump off.

  181. They fly off the curb.

  182. And they land in their parents' arms.

  183. They're excited to be reunited with the ones who love them most.

  184. And we've seen, haven't we, throughout John's gospel,

  185. no disciple is more like a preschooler than Peter.

  186. Right?

  187. And John says, it's the Lord.

  188. As soon as he tells Peter, it's the Lord.

  189. What does Peter do?

  190. He puts on his clothes.

  191. He was stripped down for work.

  192. He wraps himself up.

  193. And he tosses himself in the water.

  194. He says he swam a hundred yards to go see Jesus,

  195. to be reunited with the one who loves him most.

  196. And when he got there,

  197. he found that Jesus had prepared a fire with fish and bread.

  198. And he told them,

  199. go bring the fish that you just caught

  200. and come and let's have breakfast.

  201. Now, this is an aside, right?

  202. But Peter must have been either incredibly strong

  203. or just jacked up on adrenaline from seeing the Lord

  204. because he just swims a hundred yards.

  205. And then at the command of Jesus,

  206. verse 11 says that he got back up in the boat

  207. and he hauled that heavy net ashore

  208. full of 153 large fish.

  209. And although there were so many, John,

  210. he points out this small detail,

  211. the net was not torn.

  212. So right there on the beach,

  213. reunited once again with bread and fish,

  214. and I can only imagine with joy and laughter,

  215. the disciples enjoyed a little fish for breakfast with Jesus.

  216. John tells us in verse 12

  217. that none of the disciples, not one,

  218. none of the disciples dared ask him,

  219. who are you?

  220. They all knew it was the Lord.

  221. See, we see a little bit of their progress

  222. in the faith here, don't we?

  223. They knew it was the Lord.

  224. What a moment.

  225. But you know, as I read this

  226. and studied this text,

  227. as I thought about this event,

  228. as I imagined it in my mind,

  229. I asked the question and I wondered,

  230. maybe you asked the same question

  231. as you read this text.

  232. How in the world did they know it was the Lord?

  233. How were they so confident

  234. that it was the Lord Jesus?

  235. Confident enough for John,

  236. a hundred yards away in the dark of the early morning,

  237. to say it's the Lord?

  238. Confident enough for Peter

  239. to throw himself in the water

  240. and go swim up to the shore.

  241. How did they know it was the Lord?

  242. Well, it could have been

  243. that they're just so familiar with him,

  244. having spent three years together,

  245. eating meals.

  246. They ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner with Jesus.

  247. They had the opportunity to observe

  248. his mannerisms, his personality,

  249. how he broke the bread

  250. when he distributed it to the masses

  251. and fed the thousands.

  252. And they had eaten bread and wine

  253. at the last supper before the death of Christ.

  254. There's familiarity in the breaking of bread.

  255. It could have been that

  256. he revealed himself to them

  257. in the way that he served them.

  258. And no one served them like Jesus.

  259. And after a long night of fishing,

  260. here was Jesus preparing a fire,

  261. making breakfast,

  262. preparing the fish,

  263. and setting the table.

  264. He revealed himself

  265. in his persistent desire to serve them.

  266. This was the master that washed their feet.

  267. The Son of Man,

  268. who came not to be served,

  269. but to serve,

  270. and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  271. They knew it was him by his service.

  272. That still doesn't explain, does it,

  273. how John knew it was him

  274. from a hundred yards away.

  275. How Peter was so confident

  276. it was him from a hundred yards away.

  277. There's one more reason

  278. why I think they knew it must be him,

  279. even before arriving on the shore.

  280. They knew it was him

  281. because something similar

  282. had happened to them

  283. and with them

  284. and another encounter with Jesus

  285. earlier in another gospel,

  286. but with a few key differences.

  287. Luke chapter 5,

    Luke 5:1–11

  288. verses 1 through 11.

  289. You can turn there if you like,

  290. but what I want you to notice

  291. is that these two stories

  292. are so similar.

  293. In fact, they're so similar

  294. that critics of the Bible

  295. say that this is just the same story

  296. repurposed and told

  297. in different places

  298. and in different ways,

  299. but I think that

  300. that misses the point here.

  301. Oftentimes,

  302. when we're studying God's word,

  303. if you see two similar stories,

  304. two similar occurrences,

  305. the point,

  306. the message,

  307. is in the similarities,

  308. but also in the differences

  309. between the stories.

  310. So look here,

  311. Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  312. Luke tells the story

  313. of Jesus calling the first disciples

  314. to follow him.

  315. This was the very beginning

  316. of their relationship.

  317. This was the very first time

  318. they ever heard the voice of Jesus.

  319. It's the beginning

  320. of Jesus revealing himself to them.

  321. Now, I want you to listen

  322. and see if you can spot

  323. the differences here.

  324. Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  325. Luke says that Jesus

  326. was teaching

  327. at the side

  328. of the lake Gennesaret

  329. and he saw two boats

  330. by the lake,

  331. but the fishermen

  332. had gone out of them

  333. and were washing their nets

  334. and he got into one

  335. of the boats

  336. which happened to belong

  337. to a man named Simon

  338. who we know is Peter.

  339. And he taught the people

  340. from the boat

  341. and when he finished,

  342. listen to this,

  343. he said to Peter,

  344. put out into the deep

  345. and let down your nets

  346. for a catch.

  347. And Simon answered,

  348. Master,

  349. we toiled all night

  350. and took nothing,

  351. but at your word

  352. I will let down the nets.

  353. And when they had done this,

  354. Luke says,

  355. they enclosed a large number

  356. of fish

  357. and their nets

  358. were breaking.

  359. And they signaled

  360. to their partners

  361. in the other boat

  362. to come and help them

  363. and they came

  364. and filled both the boats

  365. so that they began to sink.

  366. But when Simon Peter saw it,

  367. he fell down

  368. at Jesus' knees

  369. saying,

  370. depart from me

  371. for I am a sinful man,

  372. O Lord.

  373. For he and all

  374. who were with him

  375. were astonished

  376. at the catch of fish

  377. that they had taken.

  378. And so also

  379. were James and John,

  380. the sons of Zebedee,

  381. who were partners

  382. with Simon.

  383. And Jesus said to Simon,

  384. do not be afraid.

  385. From now on

  386. you will be catching men.

  387. And when they had brought

  388. their boats to land,

  389. they left everything

  390. and followed him.

  391. It's interesting,

  392. isn't it?

  393. This event,

  394. obviously,

  395. it would have been

  396. seared into their memories.

  397. This was one of those

  398. life-changing

  399. foundational events.

  400. And so when it happens

  401. again here in John

    John 21 chapter mention

  402. chapter 21,

  403. of course they knew

  404. it was Jesus.

  405. Why?

  406. Because this was

  407. the exact way

  408. he had first

  409. revealed himself

  410. to them.

  411. What was the lesson

  412. for them back

  413. at the beginning?

  414. Come follow me.

  415. Come follow me.

  416. and I will make you

  417. fishers of men.

  418. Well, what are they doing

  419. here in John 21?

  420. They're still catching fish.

  421. Could it be?

  422. What's the lesson here?

  423. Could it be

  424. that Jesus is saying,

  425. guys,

  426. the time has come.

  427. The plan of salvation

  428. has been accomplished.

  429. I have come.

  430. I have lived.

  431. I have died.

  432. I have risen.

  433. The time has come

  434. for you to stop

  435. catching fish

  436. and go out

  437. and begin

  438. catching men.

  439. Could it be

  440. a lesson for them?

  441. I have sent you out

  442. to proclaim forgiveness

  443. of sins in my name

  444. and here you are

  445. still catching fish.

  446. You've gone back

  447. to your old life.

  448. You've gone back

  449. to life as usual,

  450. as if the resurrection

  451. didn't happen.

  452. Don't you know

  453. the resurrection

  454. changes everything?

  455. And now it's time

  456. for you.

  457. If you've seen me

  458. clearly for who I am,

  459. it's time for you

  460. to go share

  461. that message

  462. with others.

  463. It's time for you

  464. to go and be

  465. a fisher of men.

  466. You see,

  467. if you have seen

  468. Jesus for who he is,

  469. if he's revealed

  470. himself to you,

  471. you don't just go back

  472. to your old way

  473. of life.

  474. How could you?

  475. You have a repurposed

  476. identity in Christ.

  477. The resurrection

  478. of Jesus,

  479. when you see it

  480. with eyes of faith,

  481. changes everything

  482. about who you are.

  483. We are now sent out

  484. as fishers of men

  485. with an unbreakable net,

  486. the finished work

  487. of the gospel

  488. of Jesus Christ

  489. and a Lord

  490. that commands you

  491. to cast.

  492. Of course,

  493. there's a problem,

  494. isn't there?

  495. When you hear

  496. that command

  497. that we're called

  498. to go be fishers

  499. of men,

  500. there's a problem.

  501. I've heard each of you,

  502. many of you,

  503. express this to me

  504. when I've spoken

  505. with you about

  506. our call

  507. and the task

  508. of personal evangelism,

  509. that you and I

  510. are called,

  511. each one of us

  512. as followers of Christ,

  513. we are called

  514. to go be fishers

  515. of men.

  516. We are called

  517. to go share

  518. the gospel

  519. with our friends

  520. and our family members

  521. and our co-workers

  522. and our neighbors.

  523. We come across

  524. a problem.

  525. Do you know

  526. what it is?

  527. We feel so

  528. insufficient

  529. for that call,

  530. don't we?

  531. Who are we

  532. to go

  533. and proclaim

  534. this gospel message?

  535. We know

  536. that we're sinful,

  537. we're insufficient.

  538. Who are we?

  539. Which is why

  540. the second point

  541. this morning

  542. is so encouraging

  543. for sinners

  544. like us.

  545. Jesus reveals

  546. himself to his people

  547. and second,

  548. Jesus restores

  549. his people

  550. to himself.

  551. If anyone

  552. was disqualified

  553. from useful service

  554. to the Lord,

  555. it was Peter.

  556. Right?

  557. It was Peter.

  558. You remember

  559. Peter and the size

  560. of his failure

  561. three times.

  562. He denied the Lord.

  563. He was unwilling

  564. to associate

  565. with the Lord.

  566. He wanted nothing

  567. to do with the cost

  568. of following Jesus.

  569. I don't know him.

  570. I don't know him.

  571. I don't know him.

  572. And now as he sees

  573. the Lord on the shore,

  574. I mean,

  575. he's excited to see him,

  576. but he has to be carrying

  577. just a load of guilt.

  578. Right?

  579. And there's this

  580. unresolved tension

  581. here.

  582. But what Peter learns

  583. in this moment,

  584. and it's such an important

  585. lesson for us as well,

  586. is that his status

  587. before the Lord

  588. and his usefulness

  589. for the Lord's ministry

  590. is not in his goodness.

  591. It's not in his strength.

  592. It's not in his faithfulness,

  593. but in the faithfulness

  594. of Christ.

  595. Look there to verse 15.

  596. John says,

  597. When they'd finished breakfast,

  598. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  599. Simon, son of John,

  600. do you love me

  601. more than these?

  602. You've boasted before

  603. about the strength

  604. of your love.

  605. What about now?

  606. Do you love me?

  607. And he said,

  608. Yes, Lord,

  609. you know that I love you.

  610. And he said to him,

  611. Feed my lambs.

  612. So he said to him

  613. a second time,

  614. Simon, son of John,

  615. do you love me?

  616. And again,

  617. he replied a second time,

  618. Yes, Lord,

  619. you know that I love you.

  620. And he said,

  621. Tend my sheep.

  622. So he said to him

  623. a third time,

  624. Simon, son of John,

  625. do you love me?

  626. And he says,

  627. Peter was grieved

  628. because he said to him

  629. the third time,

  630. Do you love me?

  631. And he said,

  632. Lord, you know everything.

  633. You know that I love you.

  634. You can see right into my heart

  635. and know the truth.

  636. You know that I love you.

  637. And Jesus said,

  638. Feed my sheep.

  639. Why?

  640. Why does he ask him

  641. this question three times?

  642. Oh, you remember,

  643. three times previously,

  644. Peter had denied him.

  645. I don't know him.

  646. I don't know him.

  647. I don't know him.

  648. And now Jesus,

  649. three times,

  650. asks him,

  651. Do you love me?

  652. Do you love me?

  653. Do you love me?

  654. And now three times,

  655. Peter is able to respond

  656. to the Lord,

  657. Yes, I love you.

  658. Yes, I love you.

  659. Yes, Lord,

  660. you know that I love you.

  661. This is Jesus

  662. graciously restoring

  663. his servant

  664. to himself

  665. and to his service.

  666. And if you've ever

  667. failed the Lord,

  668. and if you've ever denied him,

  669. like Peter has done here,

  670. and we all have,

  671. we should take heart.

  672. Now this is a clear illustration

  673. of the heart of Jesus

  674. towards sinners like us.

  675. You know,

  676. we were traveling this past week,

  677. and on the way,

  678. we listened to the kids' version

  679. of Pilgrim's Progress.

  680. I forget what it's called.

  681. Littlest Pilgrim,

  682. Big Journey,

  683. something like that.

  684. John Bunyan's

  685. Pilgrim's Progress.

  686. You know,

  687. you know the classic book.

  688. And we got to the point

  689. where Christian,

  690. the pilgrim,

  691. as he's journeying

  692. on his way

  693. to the celestial city.

  694. On his way

  695. to be reunited

  696. with the king

  697. who's called him there,

  698. called him to this journey.

  699. He's on his way,

  700. and he comes,

  701. and he meets Apollyon.

  702. And Apollyon begins

  703. to accuse Christian.

  704. And he says,

  705. you've been faithless.

  706. You've denied the Lord.

  707. You've swerved from the path.

  708. You've been lazy.

  709. You've been prideful.

  710. He piles on accusation

  711. after accusation

  712. after accusation.

  713. And Christian responds,

  714. I love this.

  715. He says,

  716. all this is true

  717. and much more

  718. that you left out.

  719. But the prince

  720. whom I serve

  721. and honor

  722. is merciful

  723. and ready to forgive.

  724. Now we often sing

  725. when Satan tempts me

  726. to despair

  727. and tells me

  728. of the guilt within.

  729. Upward I look

  730. and see him there

  731. who made an end

  732. of all my sin.

  733. The Lord

  734. restored Peter

  735. not only to himself

  736. but also to tremendous service,

  737. to tremendous responsibility.

  738. As we read through the book of Acts,

  739. Peter becomes a pillar

  740. of the early church.

  741. He tells him here

  742. this responsibility

  743. three times.

  744. Feed my lambs.

  745. Tend my sheep.

  746. Feed my sheep.

  747. Does the Lord care for his sheep?

  748. Of course he does.

  749. This is no small responsibility

  750. that he's entrusting to Peter.

  751. Feed my sheep.

  752. What was the qualification?

  753. What claim?

  754. What right did Peter have

  755. to do this service?

  756. It's not in his goodness,

  757. is it?

  758. It's in the goodness

  759. and the restoration

  760. and the grace

  761. that he's received

  762. by the ministry

  763. of Christ Jesus.

  764. And the good news for us,

  765. church,

  766. is that this

  767. restorative ministry

  768. of Jesus.

  769. It's not just for Peter.

  770. It's not just for shepherds.

  771. This is the work of Christ

  772. for all of his people.

  773. Jesus restores his people

  774. to himself.

  775. You know,

  776. there's not a person in here

  777. who can honestly say

  778. that you have perfectly

  779. followed the Lord.

  780. Every one of us

  781. in our own way

  782. has denied him

  783. just like Peter.

  784. But as we grow

  785. to understand

  786. the heart of Christ

  787. towards sinners like us,

  788. the more that he reveals himself

  789. to us

  790. so that we see him clearly

  791. for who he is,

  792. we won't hide our sin

  793. from him like Adam.

  794. And we won't try

  795. and put on some appearance

  796. of false holiness.

  797. We'll run to him

  798. with our sin

  799. like Peter.

  800. That's exactly

  801. what he wants us to do.

  802. You know,

  803. it's interesting, isn't it?

  804. The first time

  805. that Jesus filled the nets

  806. and he called Peter

  807. to follow him,

  808. do you remember the response?

  809. What did he say?

  810. I'm sinful.

  811. Depart from me.

  812. I'm a sinful man,

  813. O Lord.

  814. That was just

  815. after a glimpse

  816. of the holiness

  817. and divinity of Christ.

  818. That was a short glimpse

  819. of the identity of Jesus.

  820. But here,

  821. after three years

  822. spent with the Lord,

  823. and here,

  824. after what had to be

  825. the very pinnacle,

  826. the very peak of his sin,

  827. what does he do?

  828. He jumps out

  829. and swims

  830. to the Lord

  831. for restoration.

  832. Now, we should know

  833. that both responses

  834. are correct, right?

  835. As sinful men

  836. and women

  837. on one side,

  838. we ought to stand

  839. in reverent fear

  840. of the holiness of God

  841. and what that means

  842. for us as sinners.

  843. We should never

  844. treat our sin lightly.

  845. We should never

  846. misuse and abuse

  847. the grace of God,

  848. the kindness of God

  849. as an excuse

  850. or a license

  851. to sin.

  852. And yet,

  853. if we understand

  854. the gospel,

  855. and the more

  856. we understand

  857. the heart of Christ,

  858. that Christ Jesus

  859. came and died

  860. to take away

  861. our sin

  862. from us,

  863. that he came here

  864. for sinners

  865. like us,

  866. that he died

  867. to restore

  868. sinners like us

  869. to fellowship

  870. with God,

  871. we ought to

  872. cast ourselves

  873. like Peter

  874. into the depths

  875. of his heart

  876. of grace

  877. towards sinners

  878. like us.

  879. The more clearly

  880. we see him,

  881. the more quickly

  882. we'll run to him

  883. for grace

  884. and restoration

  885. and say,

  886. Lord, use me

  887. however you see fit.

  888. Jesus gives us

  889. one final lesson

  890. to Peter

  891. here in verses

  892. 18 through 23.

  893. He shares with him

  894. how he will die.

  895. Which, you know,

  896. that seems like,

  897. that seems a little

  898. strange at first glance,

  899. doesn't it?

  900. But what he's doing

  901. is he's sharing

  902. with Peter

  903. that this ministry,

  904. following me,

  905. fishing for men,

  906. shepherding my sheep,

  907. will come at

  908. great cost.

  909. Following me

  910. will come

  911. at great cost.

  912. Look what he says,

  913. Truly, truly,

  914. I say to you,

  915. when you were young,

  916. you used to dress yourself

  917. and walk wherever

  918. you wanted,

  919. but when you are old,

  920. you will stretch out

  921. your hands

  922. and another will dress you

  923. and carry you

  924. where you do not

  925. want to go.

  926. And this he said

  927. to show by what kind

  928. of death

  929. he was to glorify God.

  930. And after saying this,

  931. he said to him,

  932. Follow me.

  933. We don't see

  934. Peter's death

  935. in the scriptures,

  936. but tradition

  937. and church history,

  938. historical records

  939. indicate that

  940. Peter was put to death

  941. in Rome

  942. at the hands

  943. of the emperor Nero.

  944. As part of a widespread

  945. persecution

  946. against Christians,

  947. Peter was crucified.

  948. But at his request,

  949. he was crucified

  950. upside down

  951. because his testimony

  952. was that

  953. he would not

  954. be worthy

  955. to be put to death

  956. in the same way

  957. as the Lord

  958. Jesus Christ.

  959. His hands

  960. were stretched out

  961. and he was carried

  962. where he did not

  963. want to go.

  964. But it's amazing,

  965. isn't it?

  966. Peter was finally

  967. willing

  968. to bear public

  969. shame

  970. for the sake

  971. of Christ.

  972. He was finally

  973. willing

  974. to associate

  975. with this man

  976. Jesus

  977. whatever the cost

  978. may be.

  979. He was restored

  980. and then some.

  981. John says

  982. that Peter,

  983. he turned

  984. and he saw

  985. the disciple

  986. whom Jesus loved

  987. following them.

  988. The one

  989. who had leaned

  990. back against him

  991. during the supper.

  992. This is John.

  993. And Peter said,

  994. well,

  995. what about this man?

  996. If that's

  997. what it's going

  998. to cost me,

  999. what's it going

  1000. to cost him?

  1001. If that's what

  1002. you have planned

  1003. for me

  1004. as I follow you,

  1005. what about him?

  1006. And John said

  1007. that Jesus replies

  1008. to him,

  1009. well,

  1010. if it's my will

  1011. that he remain

  1012. until I come,

1013. what is that to you?

  1014. You follow me.

1015. Do you get the message?

  1016. You know,

  1017. apparently this

  1018. started a bit

  1019. of a rumor

  1020. that John

  1021. wasn't going

  1022. to die

  1023. and that he

  1024. would instead

  1025. live and remain

  1026. until the return

  1027. of Christ

  1028. but John

  1029. sets us straight

  1030. and he said

  1031. that's not

  1032. what Jesus said,

  1033. that's not the point.

  1034. What's the point?

  1035. The point

  1036. for Peter

  1037. and for us,

  1038. church,

  1039. is you

  1040. follow

  1041. me.

  1042. Don't get

  1043. hung up

  1044. on

  1045. whatabouts.

  1046. don't get

  1047. tripped up

  1048. on comparing

  1049. callings

  1050. with this guy

  1051. or that.

  1052. If you have

  1053. seen Jesus

  1054. clearly

  1055. for who he is,

  1056. if you have

  1057. been restored

  1058. as a broken

  1059. sinner,

  1060. restored to

  1061. fellowship

  1062. with God himself

  1063. by the blood

  1064. of Christ,

  1065. your call,

  1066. whatever the cost,

  1067. you

  1068. follow

  1069. me.

  1070. And for some,

  1071. that may

  1072. mean

  1073. going

  1074. into

  1075. dangerous

  1076. places,

  1077. proclaiming

  1078. the name

  1079. of Christ,

  1080. being persecuted,

  1081. even giving

  1082. your life

  1083. for the cause

  1084. of Christ.

  1085. That may be

  1086. the path

  1087. that God

  1088. has for you

  1089. or it may

  1090. be that

  1091. the Lord

  1092. has called

  1093. you to pray

  1094. and to share,

  1095. to give generously

  1096. to kingdom

  1097. causes,

  1098. to faithfully

  1099. teach your family

  1100. about Jesus,

  1101. to teach your

  1102. children and

  1103. your neighbors

  1104. to evangelize

  1105. your friends.

  1106. It may be

  1107. that the Lord

  1108. has called

  1109. you to live

  1110. to a ripe

  1111. old age

  1112. and die

  1113. as an old

  1114. man or woman

  1115. faithful to

  1116. Christ.

  1117. Or it may

  1118. be that the

  1119. Lord causes

  1120. you to stretch

  1121. your hands

  1122. out on a

  1123. cross and

  1124. die for the

  1125. sake of

  1126. Christ.

  1127. What

  1128. difference

  1129. does it

  1130. make for

  1131. you?

  1132. The call

  1133. is you

  1134. follow

  1135. Christ.

  1136. And if

  1137. Jesus is

  1138. who this

  1139. book has

  1140. proclaimed

  1141. him to

  1142. be,

  1143. then church

  1144. he is

  1145. worth it.

  1146. Amen?

  1147. Amen?

  1148. John ends

  1149. this gospel

  1150. with this

  1151. fairy tale

  1152. ending.

  1153. Don't you

  1154. love this?

  1155. He says,

  1156. this is the

  1157. disciple who

  1158. is bearing

  1159. witness about

  1160. these things

  1161. and who

  1162. has written

  1163. these things

  1164. and we

  1165. know that

  1166. his testimony

  1167. is true.

  1168. There are

  1169. also many

  1170. other things

  1171. that Jesus

  1172. did.

  1173. Were every

  1174. one of them

  1175. to be written,

  1176. I suppose

  1177. that the

  1178. world itself

  1179. could not

  1180. contain the

  1181. books that

  1182. would be

  1183. written.

  1184. That sounds

  1185. at first

  1186. like an

  1187. exaggeration,

  1188. doesn't it?

  1189. And maybe

  1190. it is,

  1191. but if this

  1192. man Jesus

  1193. is who

  1194. John has

  1195. told us

  1196. that he

  1197. is,

  1198. remember

  1199. John chapter

  1200. one?

  1201. It says,

  1202. all things

  1203. were made

  1204. through him

  1205. and without

  1206. him was not

  1207. anything

  1208. made that

  1209. was made.

  1210. All things,

  1211. all the books

  1212. that have ever

  1213. been written

  1214. on geology,

  1215. on ecology,

  1216. on astrology,

  1217. on ornithology,

  1218. all of it

  1219. rightly understood

  1220. is theology,

  1221. is Christology.

  1222. All of it

  1223. is from

  1224. him and

  1225. for him,

  1226. Paul says,

  1227. to him be

  1228. the glory

  1229. forever.

  1230. Christ Jesus

  1231. made it

  1232. all.

  1233. John says

  1234. another wonder

  1235. of wonders

  1236. is that the

  1237. one who made

  1238. it all

  1239. stepped down

  1240. into his

  1241. creation

  1242. in order

  1243. to redeem

  1244. it.

  1245. How many

  1246. books could

  1247. we fill?

  1248. To tell

  1249. the stories

  1250. of Christ?

  1251. How many

  1252. books could

  1253. be written

  1254. to tell

  1255. the stories

  1256. of men

  1257. and women

  1258. who have

  1259. been given

  1260. eyes to

  1261. see him

  1262. for who

  1263. he is?

  1264. How many

  1265. books can

  1266. be written

  1267. to share

  1268. the stories

  1269. of restoration?

  1270. Even in

  1271. this room,

  1272. sinners

  1273. reconciled to

  1274. God by the

  1275. blood of

  1276. Christ.

  1277. How many

  1278. stories can

  1279. be written

  1280. through the

  1281. ages of the

  1282. church after

  1283. years and

  1284. years and

  1285. years and

  1286. years?

  1287. I don't

  1288. think John

  1289. is exaggerating

  1290. church.

  1291. all the

  1292. shelves of

  1293. the world

  1294. would not

  1295. be enough

  1296. to contain

  1297. the books

  1298. that can

  1299. be written

  1300. of this

  1301. man,

  1302. Jesus

  1303. Christ.

  1304. And we

  1305. have all

  1306. of eternity

  1307. to explore

  1308. the wonders

  1309. of the

  1310. grace of

  1311. God towards

  1312. us who

  1313. believe.

  1314. But this

  1315. book,

  1316. the gospel

  1317. according to

  1318. John,

  1319. was written

  1320. with one

  1321. purpose in

  1322. mind,

  1323. that you

  1324. may believe

  1325. that Jesus

  1326. is the

  1327. Christ,

  1328. the Son of

  1329. God,

  1330. and that by

  1331. believing you

  1332. may have

  1333. life in

  1334. His name.

  1335. Have you

  1336. gotten the

  1337. message?

  1338. Do you

  1339. believe He

  1340. is who He's

  1341. claimed to

  1342. be?

  1343. Let's pray.

  1344. Lord, as we

  1345. close this

  1346. book,

  1347. we thank

  1348. You and we

  1349. praise You

  1350. again for

  1351. Your Word.

  1352. We thank

  1353. You and we

  1354. praise You

  1355. again for

  1356. the person

  1357. and work

  1358. of Jesus.

  1359. And we

  1360. pray, Lord,

  1361. it's my

  1362. desire that

  1363. this church,

  1364. Father, that

  1365. You would

  1366. make us a

  1367. people who

  1368. see You

  1369. clearly.

  1370. Would You

  1371. reveal Yourself

  1372. to us more

  1373. clearly that we

  1374. might love You

  1375. and honor You

  1376. and worship You.

  1377. And Lord,

  1378. would You lead

  1379. us to be quick

  1380. to confess our

  1381. sin to You

  1382. and quick to

  1383. run to You

  1384. for restoration.

  1385. And Lord,

  1386. would You make

  1387. us quick to

  1388. share about You

  1389. and that others

  1390. might come to

  1391. know You as

  1392. we do.

  1393. We love You,

  1394. Lord.

  1395. We pray this

  1396. in Jesus'

  1397. name.

  1398. Amen.
