  1. Amen.

  2. Today is a little bit different for us.

  3. Ordinarily, we are walking through books of the Bible together.

  4. We just finished a long series through the book of John.

  5. As I mentioned earlier, Lord willing, next week we'll begin a new series in the book of Daniel.

  6. But here in between, we have an opportunity this morning,

  7. as we install two deacons in the life of this church,

  8. to explain from the Bible what in the world that word even means, deacon.

  9. Now I know when I even say that, many of us have different images that come to mind,

  10. different experiences that come to mind, some good, some bad, some biblical, some unbiblical.

  11. And so what I want to do this morning, with the help of God through His Word,

  12. is to open up to Acts chapter 6 and explain biblically what we are getting ourselves into

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  13. with this gift of deacons this morning.

  14. So open it up to Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  15. And I want you to keep a finger there.

  16. We're also going to go to 1 Timothy chapter 3.

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  17. If you're using the Pew Bibles there in front of you,

  18. you can find Acts chapter 6 at page 859, I believe.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  19. But when you found it,

  20. let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word, Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  21. I'll be reading this morning from verse 1 through verse 7.

  22. Now in these days,

  23. when the disciples were increasing in number,

  24. a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews,

  25. because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  26. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,

  27. It is not right that we should give up preaching the Word of God to serve tables.

  28. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute,

  29. full of the Spirit and of wisdom,

  30. whom we will appoint to this duty.

  31. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.

  32. And what they said pleased the whole gathering.

  33. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,

  34. and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicholas,

  35. a proselyte of Antioch.

  36. These they set before the apostles,

  37. and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

  38. And the Word of God continued to increase.

  39. And the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem,

  40. and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

  41. And the grass withers and the flower fades,

  42. but the Word of our Lord endures forever.

  43. Would you pray with me?

  44. Lord, we thank You for Your Word.

  45. We thank You for Your wisdom and for Your design and plans for Your church.

  46. And we thank You that in Your grace and Your kindness,

  47. we are becoming obedient to what You've written.

  48. And we pray that that would continue here,

  49. and that You would work in us what You worked in the early church,

  50. that disciples would multiply greatly from this place.

  51. We pray in Jesus' name.

  52. Amen.

  53. And you may be seated.

  54. Pastor Matt Smithhurst,

  55. in his very short, very helpful book,

  56. simply titled Deacons,

  57. he says,

  58. Show me a church with distracted leaders

  59. or a derailed mission,

  60. and I will show you a church without effective deacons.

  61. It may be that you've been a part of a church like this,

  62. and if you have,

  63. whether you realize it or not,

  64. if you've experienced a church with distracted leaders

  65. or a derailed mission,

  66. whether or not you realize it,

  67. you have had a little taste

  68. of what life was like in the early church

  69. in this period in Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  70. There's an issue here in the early days of the church.

  71. Issues are not anything new in the church, by the way.

  72. It's not a new phenomenon.

  73. Good things are happening in the early church.

  74. The Spirit has come.

  75. The Word is spreading.

  76. Men and women from Jerusalem to Judea to Samaria

  77. to the ends of the earth are beginning to believe.

  78. The gospel churches are forming.

  79. But verse 1 tells us that there's an issue.

  80. Look there with me.

  81. When the disciples were increasing in number,

  82. that's a good thing,

  83. a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews.

  84. That's a bad thing.

  85. Why were they complaining?

  86. He says,

  87. Because their widows were being neglected

  88. in the daily distribution.

  89. Here we go.

  90. This is church war.

  91. We've all maybe tasted a bit of this.

  92. You have the Hellenists in one corner.

  93. These Greek-speaking Jews.

  94. They're hungry.

  95. Literally hungry.

  96. Their widows have been neglected.

  97. There's an injustice being done.

  98. And in the other corner over here are the Hebrews.

  99. We don't know exactly why this neglect was happening.

  100. It may be that there was some sort of underlying prejudice

  101. behind this neglect.

  102. Maybe this was intentional.

  103. It may be just an innocent oversight.

  104. We're not told exactly why this is happening.

  105. But it's happening.

  106. And everybody is looking to the apostles

  107. to try and figure out,

  108. well, what in the world are they going to do

  109. to solve this problem?

  110. If this were an American church,

  111. they probably just would have planted

  112. a Hellenist church over here.

  113. And a Hebrew church right around the corner over here.

  114. They would separate,

  115. go their own separate ways.

  116. Everybody would be happy.

  117. But that's not what they did.

  118. The solution here,

  119. for the sake of unity of the church,

  120. and for the sake of the mission of the church,

  121. for the sake of the advance of the gospel,

  122. was to establish a deacon-like ministry

  123. that served the needs of these widows,

  124. that advanced the mission of the gospel,

  125. that preserved the ministry of the word and prayer.

  126. There is a deacon-like ministry.

  127. And I can't exactly say

  128. that this is the establishment

  129. of the deacon ministry.

  130. Deacons have not yet formally been established

  131. at this point in the life of the early church.

  132. But I can say with certainty

  133. that this, at the very least,

  134. lays out the blueprint

  135. for what the deacon ministry would become

  136. in the church.

  137. And so here's what I want you to understand

  138. this morning.

  139. That this type of deacon ministry,

  140. what we see in Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  141. is absolutely vital

  142. for the health of the church.

  143. Deacon ministry,

  144. when it functions according to the word of God

  145. for the good of his people,

  146. is absolutely vital

  147. for the health of the church.

  148. The church needs deacons.

  149. Sea Wee Bay needs deacons.

  150. And so what I want to do this morning

  151. is give you four reasons why this morning.

  152. Four reasons why we need deacons.

  153. And really, these are four descriptions

  154. of a deacon.

  155. So if you're following along,

  156. if you're a note taker,

  157. we try to make it easy

  158. for you to take notes.

  159. This will help you follow me this morning.

  160. Four reasons why we need deacons.

  161. Number one,

  162. deacons are mature believers.

  163. Deacons are mature believers.

  164. Verse 2, if you look there with me,

  165. verse 2 says that the 12 summoned

  166. the full number of the disciples.

  167. At this point,

  168. that number was in the thousands.

  169. According to Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  170. some estimates are likely

  171. over 20,000 members of this church.

  172. This was the first mega church

  173. here in Jerusalem.

  174. Twelve apostles,

  175. thousands of members.

  176. And here's what they said.

  177. They said it's not right

  178. that we should give up

  179. preaching of the word of God

  180. in order to serve tables.

  181. We'll get back to that comment

  182. in a moment.

  183. But here's the solution.

  184. They said,

  185. Therefore, brothers,

  186. pick out from among you

  187. seven men of good repute,

  188. full of the spirit and of wisdom,

  189. whom we will appoint to this duty.

  190. The solution here to this issue

  191. was seven men of good repute.

  192. You hear that qualification?

  193. They had a reputation

  194. that preceded them.

  195. Seven men who were full of the spirit.

  196. They're not primarily

  197. just good businessmen.

  198. These are mature Christians.

  199. That's the qualification.

  200. These are individuals

  201. who gave evidence of regeneration.

  202. Seven men who are full of wisdom.

  203. They knew their Bibles.

  204. They can apply God's truth

  205. to issues in their lives

  206. as well as in the life of the church,

  207. problems that the church would face.

  208. They were mature believers.

  209. Now, I want you to flip over

  210. to 1 Timothy 3 for a moment.

  211. And keep your fingers there

  212. in Acts 6,

  213. because we will come back.

  214. But in 1 Timothy 3,

  215. all of 1 Timothy,

  216. Paul is writing to a young pastor

  217. who's trying to figure things out

  218. in the church.

  219. And he's giving godly wisdom,

  220. God-directed insight

  221. into how the church ought to function.

  222. So by the time he gets to chapter 3,

  223. the Apostle Paul,

  224. he's listing out qualifications

  225. for the two offices

  226. of the local church,

  227. elder and deacon.

  228. Pastor,

  229. overseer,

  230. elder,

  231. elder,

  232. and deacon.

  233. So we have the qualifications

  234. for the office of pastor

  235. in verses 1 through 7,

  236. and then the office of deacon

  237. in verses 8 through 13.

  238. And what I want you to notice

  239. is that in this description of deacons,

  240. this is simply describing

  241. Christian maturity.

  242. Look there with me to verse 8.

  243. It says,

  244. Deacons likewise,

  245. in the same manner as the pastors,

  246. deacons likewise must be dignified.

  247. This is the banner qualification

  248. that hangs over the rest

  249. of these character qualifications here

  250. in the rest of the passage.

  251. They must be dignified.

  252. And then it tells us

  253. what they must not be.

  254. Verse 8,

  255. they must not be double-tongued.

  256. Deacons might be placed

  257. in vulnerable situations

  258. where they might know

  259. sensitive information

  260. about church members.

  261. They're caring for the needy

  262. and the weak

  263. and the vulnerable.

  264. Deacons don't say one thing

  265. and do another.

  266. They don't say one thing

  267. behind your back

  268. that they wouldn't say

  269. to your face.

  270. They are not double-tongued.

  271. They can be trusted

  272. with the words

  273. that come out of their mouth.

  274. They're not addicted

  275. to much wine.

  276. Deacons in this context,

  277. again,

  278. they probably,

  279. possibly,

  280. would have been

  281. bringing wine to the sick,

  282. administering wine

  283. to those who are needy

  284. and sick.

  285. And they should not be

  286. given over to addiction

  287. to much wine.

  288. They're not drunkards.

  289. You don't want

  290. an alcoholic deacon, right?

  291. And in the same way,

  292. likely,

  293. they would have had access

  294. to distribute

  295. some of the church's funds

  296. for these tangible,

  297. immediate,

  298. practical needs.

  299. They would be money holders

  300. for issues of benevolence

  301. and member care.

  302. And so,

  303. he says,

  304. they must not be greedy

  305. for dishonest gain.

  306. You don't want

  307. a greedy deacon

  308. having his hand

  309. in the finances

  310. of the church.

  311. All of these

  312. are issues of self-control,

  313. aren't they?

  314. All of these

  315. are issues

  316. of Christian maturity.

  317. But it's not only

  318. what they must not be

  319. and do.

  320. Verse 9 says,

  321. what they must do,

  322. they must hold

  323. the mystery of the faith

  324. with a clear conscience.

  325. Don't you love

  326. that description?

  327. Don't you wish

  328. that would be said of you?

  329. They must hold

  330. the mystery of the faith

  331. with a clear conscience.

  332. They're not primarily teachers.

  333. That's not their role.

  334. But they're mature believers.

  335. They know their Bible.

  336. They're not in conflict

  337. with the church's

  338. statement of faith.

  339. These are men and women,

  340. as we'll see in just a moment,

  341. who believe the word of God.

  342. Verse 10 says,

  343. they must be tested first.

  344. This isn't a quick appointment.

  345. It's too important for that.

  346. They're proven over time

  347. to be competent

  348. and faithful.

  349. You see the standard here.

  350. This is a standard

  351. of Christian maturity

  352. that's observed

  353. and affirmed

  354. by the church

  355. over time.

  356. Now, verse 11.

  357. Here's where we get

  358. into some controversy.

  359. Although I don't want

  360. to get all the way

  361. into the weeds

  362. this morning in it,

  363. I do just want

  364. to point out

  365. that there in the ESV,

  366. the translation

  367. that we use,

  368. where it says,

  369. their wives likewise

  370. must be dignified,

  371. that can just as easily

  372. be translated,

  373. women likewise

  374. must be dignified,

  375. which would change things

  376. a little bit,

  377. wouldn't it?

  378. Rather than Paul

  379. giving an additional

  380. qualification

  381. for deacons' wives,

  382. which the elders

  383. have no such qualification

  384. for their wives,

  385. instead,

  386. Paul,

  387. if this is what he's doing,

  388. would be speaking

  389. to females,

  390. women,

  391. who would serve

  392. in the office

  393. of deacon.

  394. And so,

  395. if that's what he's doing,

  396. then the structure

  397. of this passage

  398. would look like this.

  399. Verses 8 through 10

  400. address all deacons

  401. as sort of a header

  402. for the list.

  403. Verse 11

  404. speaks to women deacons.

  405. Verse 12

  406. speaks to male deacons.

  407. And then verse 13

  408. concludes,

  409. again,

  410. by speaking to

  411. all deacons.

  412. Women likewise

  413. must be dignified.

  414. They likewise

  415. must not be slanderers,

  416. must be sober-minded,

  417. must be faithful

  418. in all things.

  419. Verse 12,

  420. back to male deacons.

  421. They must be

  422. the husband of one wife,

  423. a one-woman man,

  424. managing their children

  425. and their own households well.

  426. And then finally,

  427. in verse 13,

  428. all who serve well

  429. as deacons

  430. gain a good standing

  431. for themselves

  432. and also great confidence

  433. in the faith

  434. that is in Christ Jesus.

  435. I guess we did

  436. sort of get into the weeds,

  437. didn't we?

  438. Not too deep.

  439. Here's the point.

  440. Whoever serves

  441. as a deacon

  442. must be dignified.

  443. That's the banner

  444. qualification here.

  445. It's Christian maturity.

  446. And why do we need

  447. deacons that would

  448. serve like this?

  449. Well,

  450. because I pray

  451. that this list

  452. would describe

  453. every member

  454. of our church.

  455. What's exceptional

  456. about this list

  457. is that these qualifications

  458. are so ordinary,

  459. isn't it?

  460. This is what

  461. all Christians

  462. must aspire

  463. to be and do.

  464. It's what deacons

  465. must be

  466. if we're going

  467. to recognize them

  468. and install them

  469. to serve in our church

  470. as deacons.

  471. But this is what

  472. all Christians

  473. ought to aspire

  474. to be

  475. by the grace of God.

  476. God.

  477. So when we

  478. install qualified,

  479. mature deacons

  480. to serve in this church,

  481. what we're doing

  482. is we're

  483. providing

  484. servants

  485. who you can look to

  486. and say,

  487. go look like this.

  488. Go live like this.

  489. You want to know

  490. what it means

  491. to serve

  492. in a God-honoring way?

  493. Go spend some time

  494. with Bill.

  495. Go spend some time

  496. with Randy.

  497. Serve with them.

  498. Serve like them.

  499. Pursue Christ

  500. like them.

  501. They're examples

  502. of Christian maturity.

  503. Second,

  504. second,

  505. deacons are

  506. pastor supporters.

  507. Let's look back

  508. to Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  509. Deacons are

  510. pastor supporters.

  511. Look there again

  512. to verse 2.

  513. And notice again

  514. how the apostles

  515. responded

  516. to this issue.

  517. They said,

  518. the twelve

  519. summoned the full number

  520. of the disciples

  521. and said,

  522. it's not right

  523. that we should give up

  524. preaching the word of God

  525. to serve tables.

  526. Therefore,

  527. brothers,

  528. pick out from among you

  529. seven men of good repute,

  530. full of the spirit

  531. and of wisdom,

  532. whom we will appoint

  533. to this duty.

  534. But we will devote

  535. ourselves to prayer

  536. and to the ministry

  537. of the word.

  538. Do you notice

  539. the division of labor

  540. here?

  541. Developing in the early church.

  542. The apostles here,

  543. they are to devote themselves

  544. to the ministry

  545. of prayer

  546. and the word.

  547. And then these seven men

  548. are appointed

  549. to this need meeting,

  550. ministry,

  551. practical,

  552. tangible,

  553. need meeting task.

  554. And again,

  555. this lays out

  556. the blueprint,

  557. the pattern

  558. for how these two offices

  559. of the local church

  560. ought to operate.

  561. Elders,

  562. pastors,

  563. our shepherds,

  564. their spiritual overseers,

  565. their leaders,

  566. their primary task

  567. of elders and pastors

  568. is to be about

  569. the ministry

  570. of word and prayer.

  571. And the primary task

  572. of deacons,

  573. like these seven men here,

  574. is to be about

  575. this practical,

  576. tangible,

  577. need meeting

  578. ministry of the body,

  579. but not as an end

  580. in itself.

  581. In essence,

  582. they look to the many

  583. practical needs

  584. of the body

  585. so as to guard

  586. and protect

  587. the ministry

  588. of the word.

  589. They're like

  590. offensive linemen.

  591. As the elders

  592. run the play,

  593. drive the ball

  594. down the field,

  595. the linemen block

  596. and keep them

  597. from getting hit

  598. with every possible

  599. need or complaint

  600. along the way.

  601. That's the general

  602. division of labor

  603. here.

  604. Now,

  605. notice what the apostles

  606. did not say.

  607. They did not say

  608. this need

  609. isn't important.

  610. It could be easy

  611. to misunderstand

  612. the apostles'

  613. words here,

  614. to take it almost

  615. as being dismissive

  616. of the significance

  617. of this need.

  618. Like,

  619. I'm not waiting tables

  620. so somebody else

  621. can do it.

  622. We're doing the

  623. important stuff

  624. over here

  625. so get somebody

  626. else to do it.

  627. Well,

  628. that's not what

  629. they said,

  630. is it?

  631. Quite the opposite,

  632. in fact.

  633. They saw that

  634. this need

  635. is so important

  636. that they gathered

  637. the whole church,

  638. appointed seven individuals

  639. to the task,

  640. set them about the work

  641. to make certain

  642. that this need

  643. was met

  644. so that they

  645. could continue

  646. to devote themselves

  647. to the word

  648. and prayer.

  649. It's interesting

  650. that the root word

  651. for deacon

  652. there in Acts 6,

  653. diakonos,

  654. it appears twice.

  655. Once,

  656. in verse 2,

  657. it's not right

  658. that we should give up

  659. preaching the word

  660. of God

  661. to deacon tables.

  662. And again,

  663. in verse 4,

  664. but we will devote

  665. ourselves to prayer

  666. in the deaconing

  667. of the word.

  668. They recognized

  669. this division of labor

  670. with a common goal

  671. that was needed

  672. for the health

  673. of the church.

  674. What they also

  675. didn't say

  676. was this need

  677. is important

  678. so we will do

  679. it all ourselves.

  680. That's not what

  681. they said.

  682. The apostles

  683. were not meeting

  684. every need

  685. that they saw

  686. in the early church.

  687. And wisely so.

  688. They weren't doing

  689. everything

  690. that could be done.

  691. They were focused

  692. explicitly

  693. on what must

  694. be done.

  695. Namely,

  696. the ministry

  697. of the word

  698. and prayer.

  699. Some churches

  700. have a

  701. messed up vision

  702. of what a pastor

  703. is supposed to do.

  704. That if there's

  705. needs in the church,

  706. well then the pastor

  707. is the one

  708. who must

  709. be the one

  710. to have to meet

  711. the needs

  712. in the church.

  713. That's wrong.

  714. But at the same

  715. time,

  716. some pastors

  717. wrongly take

  718. that upon

  719. themselves.

  720. They try to

  721. do too much.

  722. And instead

  723. of actually

  724. helping the church

  725. and ministering

  726. to the church,

  727. the church winds

  728. up with

  729. distracted leaders

  730. and a derailed

  731. mission.

  732. The Associated

  733. Press published

  734. an article

  735. on January

  736. 11th

  737. titled,

  738. U.S.

  739. Pastors

  740. Struggle

  741. with Post-Pandemic

  742. Burnout.

  743. Survey shows

  744. half considered

  745. quitting since

  746. 2020.

  747. It said that

  748. more than

  749. four in ten

  750. of clergy

  751. surveyed in

  752. fall 2023

  753. had seriously

  754. considered leaving

  755. their congregations

  756. at least once

  757. since 2020.

  758. And more than

  759. half had thought

  760. seriously of

  761. leaving the ministry

  762. according to

  763. the survey

  764. released by

  765. the Hartford

  766. Institute for

  767. Religion Research

  768. on Thursday.

  769. And it went

  770. on to say

  771. those thinking

  772. of quitting

  773. the ministry

  774. entirely were

  775. more likely

  776. to be pastors

  777. of smaller

  778. churches and

  779. those who work

  780. solo compared

  781. with those on

  782. larger staffs

  783. and at larger

  784. churches.

  785. Now why do you

  786. think that is?

  787. It is not

  788. because large

  789. church ministry

  790. is easier than

  791. small church

  792. ministry.

  793. I can guarantee

  794. you that.

  795. But it is

  796. because small

  797. churches are

  798. often understaffed

  799. and under

  800. resourced

  801. which leaves

  802. the pastor

  803. overwhelmed

  804. and overextended

  805. as they seek

  806. to meet the

  807. needs of the

  808. body.

  809. Unless

  810. unless

  811. he is able

  812. to delegate

  813. the needs

  814. of the ministry

  815. to qualified

  816. individuals who

  817. can help

  818. carry the

  819. load.

  820. Church do

  821. you see the

  822. wisdom here?

  823. In God's

  824. gift of

  825. a plurality

  826. of elders

  827. and a plurality

  828. of godly

  829. deacons to

  830. help carry

  831. the load?

  832. I am

  833. thankful for

  834. Treg

  835. Hallman

  836. who serves

  837. alongside me

  838. as an elder

  839. here.

  840. I am thankful

  841. that God has

  842. brought these

  843. two men

  844. Bill and

  845. Randy to

  846. serve alongside

  847. us as

  848. deacons.

  849. We need

  850. deacons

  851. church.

  852. The church

  853. needs

  854. deacons.

  855. There is

  856. wisdom here

  857. for us to

  858. follow.

  859. But it is

  860. not just

  861. for my

  862. good.

  863. Third,

  864. deacons are

  865. unity

  866. defenders.

  867. They are

  868. mature

  869. believers.

  870. They are

  871. pastor

  872. supporters.

  873. Third,

  874. they are

  875. unity

  876. defenders.

  877. Ask

  878. yourself,

  879. why was

  880. this need

  881. so important?

  882. Important

  883. enough to

  884. gather the

  885. whole church

  886. and important

  887. enough to

  888. address it

  889. here.

  890. Important

  891. enough for

  892. Luke as

  893. he is writing

  894. the book of

  895. Acts to

  896. say we need

  897. to record

  898. this and

  899. have us

  900. think about

  901. this.

  902. I think

  903. there are

  904. three layers

  905. to this

  906. issue here.

  907. On the

  908. one hand,

  909. the issue

  910. is important

  911. simply because

  912. there is a

  913. need in the

  914. body.

  915. These widows

  916. are being

  917. neglected.

  918. That is an

  919. issue.

  920. We are called

  921. to care for

  922. those who

  923. are weak

  924. and vulnerable.

  925. We are called

  926. to care for

  927. the orphan

  928. and the

  929. widow.

  930. That is

  931. layer number

  932. one.

  933. There is a

  934. real need

  935. here in the

  936. body that

  937. needs to be

  938. addressed.

  939. There is

  940. another issue

  941. here,

  942. isn't there?

  943. We have

  944. already covered

  945. it.

  946. The ministry

  947. of the

  948. word was

  949. going to

  950. be hampered

  951. if the

  952. apostles were

  953. to be

  954. distracted

  955. from the

  956. ministry of

  957. the word

  958. and prayer

  959. to go

  960. serve

  961. tables.

  962. Guess

  963. what?

  964. The ministry

  965. of the

  966. word and

  967. prayer would

  968. be hampered.

  969. The apostles

  970. can only divide

  971. their time and

  972. attention in so

  973. many ways.

  974. There is

  975. another issue

  976. here,

  977. another reason

  978. why this

  979. ministry was

  980. so necessary.

  981. It is a

  982. reason that

  983. underlies the

  984. work of a

  985. deacon.

  986. It is one of

  987. the main

  988. reasons why

  989. we and

  990. every other

  991. church needs

  992. qualified deacons.

  993. That reason

  994. is that the

  995. unity of the

  996. church is

  997. being threatened.

  998. Do you see

  999. that?

  1000. The unity of

  1001. the church.

  1002. Think about

  1003. it.

  1004. The problem

  1005. here is much

  1006. bigger than

  1007. just the

  1008. immediate

  1009. practical need

  1010. on the

  1011. table.

  1012. No pun

  1013. intended.

  1014. The problem,

  1015. this unmet

  1016. need,

  1017. was resulting

  1018. in a bigger

  1019. issue,

  1020. the brewing

  1021. threat of

  1022. disunity in

  1023. the early

  1024. church.

  1025. Now,

  1026. we have

  1027. talked about

  1028. this so

  1029. much.

  1030. You probably

  1031. are wondering

  1032. when in the

  1033. world am I

  1034. going to stop

  1035. talking about

  1036. unity so much?

  1037. Well,

  1038. don't hold

  1039. your breath.

  1040. Church,

  1041. this is so

  1042. important for

  1043. us.

  1044. We must

  1045. guard the

  1046. unity that's

  1047. given to us

  1048. by God in

  1049. the gospel of

  1050. Christ.

  1051. Christ.

  1052. It's a

  1053. defining feature

  1054. of the local

  1055. church is that

  1056. Christ has

  1057. united us

  1058. individually,

  1059. vertically to

  1060. God by faith

  1061. in Him,

  1062. and He has

  1063. united us

  1064. horizontally to

  1065. one another

  1066. in a body.

  1067. If we're not

  1068. united together,

  1069. we have no

  1070. mission worth

  1071. sharing about.

  1072. Unity was

  1073. important to

  1074. Jesus,

  1075. John 17.

  1076. He prayed,

  1077. I do not ask

  1078. for these only,

  1079. but also for

  1080. those who will

  1081. believe in me

  1082. through their

  1083. word,

  1084. that's us,

  1085. that they may

  1086. all be one

  1087. just as you,

  1088. Father,

  1089. are in me

  1090. and I in you,

  1091. that they also

  1092. may be in us

  1093. so that the

  1094. world may believe

  1095. that you have

  1096. sent me.

  1097. Our unity,

  1098. again,

  1099. individually to

  1100. God and

  1101. corporately to

  1102. one another,

  1103. is an

  1104. apologetic to

  1105. the outside

  1106. unbelieving

  1107. world.

  1108. He said,

  1109. Father,

  1110. I pray that

  1111. they may

  1112. be one

  1113. so that

  1114. the world

  1115. may believe

  1116. that you

  1117. sent me.

  1118. Lack of

  1119. oneness

  1120. breeds lack

  1121. of witness.

  1122. This is a

  1123. need that

  1124. must be

  1125. addressed.

  1126. How could

  1127. they continue

  1128. to go out

  1129. and tell

  1130. people of

  1131. the unifying

  1132. work of

  1133. Jesus if

  1134. they themselves

  1135. are divided

  1136. with one

  1137. another?

  1138. Unity was

  1139. important to

  1140. Jesus.

  1141. Unity was

  1142. important to

  1143. Paul.

  1144. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1145. chapter 4.

  1146. He says,

  1147. I therefore,

  1148. a prisoner of

  1149. the Lord,

  1150. urge you to

  1151. walk in a

  1152. manner worthy

  1153. of the calling

  1154. to which you

  1155. have been

  1156. called,

  1157. with all

  1158. humility and

  1159. gentleness,

  1160. with patience,

  1161. bearing with one

  1162. another in love,

  1163. eager to

  1164. maintain the

  1165. unity of the

  1166. spirit in the

  1167. bond of

  1168. peace.

  1169. Does that

  1170. sound familiar

  1171. to you?

  1172. To our

  1173. members,

  1174. that ought to

  1175. sound very

  1176. familiar.

  1177. That's a part

  1178. of our church

  1179. covenant.

  1180. It's the

  1181. first line

  1182. of commitment

  1183. that we

  1184. make as we

  1185. join together

  1186. in this church

  1187. family,

  1188. that we

  1189. will pursue

  1190. unity,

  1191. being eager

  1192. to maintain

  1193. it,

  1194. what God

  1195. has given

  1196. to us.

  1197. The unity

  1198. of the church

  1199. was important

  1200. to Paul,

  1201. not only this,

  1202. but the church's

  1203. unity is important

  1204. to Satan.

  1205. Do you realize

  1206. that?

  1207. The church's

  1208. unity is

  1209. important to

  1210. Satan,

  1211. which is why

  1212. he does

  1213. whatever he

  1214. can to

  1215. disrupt it.

  1216. Our enemy

  1217. does not

  1218. want a

  1219. united church.

  1220. He hates

  1221. a united

  1222. church.

  1223. I'm afraid

  1224. that he

  1225. works much

  1226. harder to

  1227. disrupt our

  1228. unity than

  1229. we tend to

  1230. do to

  1231. protect it.

  1232. Church,

  1233. we share a

  1234. sweet fellowship

  1235. here in this

  1236. family.

  1237. I know we

  1238. do, but

  1239. hear me out.

  1240. Our enemy

  1241. would love to

  1242. use something

  1243. as small as

  1244. setting tables

  1245. to unravel the

  1246. fellowship that

  1247. we share

  1248. at Seawee Bay.

  1249. Deacons,

  1250. I'm speaking

  1251. to you and

  1252. church members

  1253. to you as

  1254. well.

  1255. Don't let it

  1256. happen here.

  1257. Be on guard

  1258. against it.

  1259. Be eager to

  1260. maintain the

  1261. unity that we've

  1262. been given.

  1263. Don't let the

  1264. enemy get one

  1265. step into this

  1266. church to

  1267. disrupt the

  1268. unity that we

  1269. have.

  1270. Our mission

  1271. hinges on our

  1272. unity as we

  1273. work together to

  1274. spread the

  1275. gospel.

  1276. be watchful

  1277. deacons.

  1278. Be vigilant.

  1279. Serve like

  1280. watchmen in a

  1281. tower.

  1282. Serve like

  1283. snipers in a

  1284. tower who

  1285. seek to put

  1286. out any threat

  1287. before they

  1288. even come near

  1289. the walls of

  1290. this church.

  1291. You are unity

  1292. defenders.

  1293. One final

  1294. description.

  1295. Fourth,

  1296. finally,

  1297. deacons are

  1298. servant leaders.

  1299. servant leaders.

  1300. At the very

  1301. heart of the

  1302. deacon ministry

  1303. is service.

  1304. Serving tables

  1305. is not glamorous

  1306. work, is it?

  1307. I worked at a

  1308. coffee shop while

  1309. I was in

  1310. seminary.

  1311. Let me tell you

  1312. something.

  1313. There is no

  1314. worse job than

  1315. serving coffee

  1316. to coffee

  1317. addicted people

  1318. before they have

  1319. had their coffee.

  1320. Everybody else

  1321. gets them after

  1322. they have

  1323. been getting

  1324. their fix of

  1325. the caffeine.

  1326. It is tough.

  1327. It is messy

  1328. work.

  1329. You get fussed

  1330. at.

  1331. People fuss at

  1332. you.

  1333. They don't like

  1334. the way you

  1335. serve them.

  1336. You have to

  1337. clean up other

  1338. people's messes.

  1339. It is hard

  1340. work in the

  1341. service industry.

  1342. To be a

  1343. deacon at its

  1344. very core is

  1345. to be about

  1346. service.

  1347. The word

  1348. deacon, you

  1349. know this.

  1350. The word

  1351. deacon, it

  1352. literally

  1353. translates to

  1354. mean servant.

  1355. It is a

  1356. dignified title

  1357. for dirty

  1358. work.

  1359. You want to

  1360. be a deacon?

  1361. That does not

  1362. mean you are

  1363. climbing up the

  1364. ladder of a

  1365. church to a

  1366. position of

  1367. authority.

  1368. What it means

  1369. is that you

  1370. are committing

  1371. to stoop down

  1372. low to be in

  1373. the position of

  1374. a servant.

  1375. But lest you

  1376. think that makes

  1377. them insignificant,

  1378. let me remind

  1379. you how things

  1380. work in the

  1381. kingdom of God.

  1382. Mark chapter

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1383. 10, James

  1384. and John

  1385. wanted to

  1386. climb the

  1387. ladder of

  1388. authority.

  1389. And they

  1390. made a request

  1391. of the Lord

  1392. Jesus, Lord

  1393. let us sit at

  1394. your right hand

  1395. in glory.

  1396. They wanted

  1397. this position

  1398. of authority

  1399. and recognition.

  1400. They wanted

  1401. power and

  1402. greatness.

  1403. And Jesus

  1404. responds to

  1405. them and says

  1406. really you

  1407. don't know

  1408. what you are

  1409. asking for.

  1410. Listen to

  1411. what he says

  1412. in Mark

    Mark 10:42

  1413. chapter 10

  1414. verse 42.

  1415. It says

  1416. Jesus called

  1417. them to him

  1418. and said to

  1419. them, you

  1420. know that

  1421. those who

  1422. are considered

  1423. rulers of

  1424. the Gentiles

  1425. lord it over

  1426. them.

  1427. And their

  1428. great ones

  1429. exercise authority

  1430. over them.

  1431. That's how it

  1432. works out there

  1433. in the world.

  1434. But it shall

  1435. not be so

  1436. among you.

  1437. But whoever

  1438. would be great

  1439. among you

  1440. must be

  1441. your servant.

  1442. And whoever

  1443. would be first

  1444. among you

  1445. must be

  1446. slave of

  1447. all.

  1448. Do you hear

  1449. the path of

  1450. greatness in the

  1451. kingdom of God?

  1452. Unlike the

  1453. way things

  1454. work out

  1455. there in

  1456. the world

  1457. where the

  1458. path of

  1459. greatness is

  1460. climbing the

  1461. ladder no

  1462. matter who

  1463. you got to

  1464. trample on

  1465. the way up

  1466. the path to

  1467. greatness in

  1468. the kingdom

  1469. of God and

  1470. in the church

  1471. is not up

  1472. but down.

  1473. You're not

  1474. climbing your

  1475. way up the

  1476. ladder.

  1477. You're stooping

  1478. low to become

  1479. a servant.

  1480. Whoever would

  1481. be great among

  1482. you must be

  1483. your deacon.

  1484. And whoever

  1485. would be first

  1486. among you must

  1487. be slave of

  1488. all.

  1489. Is that your

  1490. vision of

  1491. greatness?

  1492. Is that your

  1493. vision of what

  1494. true greatness

  1495. looks like?

  1496. Deaconing is

  1497. messy work.

  1498. It's often

  1499. thankless work.

  1500. Oftentimes people

  1501. who you serve

  1502. are mean to

  1503. you.

  1504. Sometimes they

  1505. won't be happy

  1506. with your

  1507. service.

  1508. If you serve

  1509. for their

  1510. approval you'll

  1511. probably be

  1512. discouraged in

  1513. your work at

  1514. some point along

  1515. the way.

  1516. But if you

  1517. want to be

  1518. a deacon

  1519. your call

  1520. is to step

  1521. into the

  1522. messiness of

  1523. the church

  1524. for their

  1525. good and

  1526. for God's

  1527. glory.

  1528. You are

  1529. called to

  1530. be a

  1531. servant.

  1532. Again,

  1533. Matt Smethurst

  1534. quoting his

  1535. book, he

  1536. says,

  1537. deacons are

  1538. not the

  1539. church's

  1540. spiritual

  1541. council of

  1542. directors,

  1543. nor the

  1544. executive board

  1545. to whom the

  1546. pastor CEO

  1547. answers.

  1548. They are the

  1549. calvary of

  1550. servants,

  1551. deputized to

  1552. execute the

  1553. elders'

  1554. vision by

  1555. coordinating

  1556. various

  1557. ministries.

  1558. I love that

  1559. description.

  1560. And here at

  1561. Seaweed Bay,

  1562. what that's

  1563. going to look

  1564. like, what

  1565. this means

  1566. for us

  1567. practically as

  1568. we install

  1569. these men

  1570. today as

  1571. deacons,

  1572. is that

  1573. these men

  1574. will serve

  1575. by leading

  1576. and facilitating

  1577. some key

  1578. ministry areas

  1579. for our

  1580. church, the

  1581. ministries of

  1582. facilities and

  1583. the ministry

  1584. of stewardship.

  1585. And church,

  1586. they will

  1587. need your

  1588. help.

  1589. They will

  1590. need your

  1591. support.

  1592. They will

  1593. need your

  1594. prayers.

  1595. We don't

  1596. raise up

  1597. deacons to

  1598. do all the

  1599. ministry

  1600. themselves.

  1601. They lead

  1602. and facilitate

  1603. and organize,

  1604. but the church

  1605. is to be about

  1606. this work of

  1607. service.

  1608. All of us

  1609. are in a very

  1610. general sense

  1611. lowercase d

  1612. deacons.

  1613. If you want

  1614. to support

  1615. them, then

  1616. join them.

  1617. Don't just

  1618. observe their

  1619. efforts, multiply

  1620. their efforts.

  1621. And it's

  1622. my prayer

  1623. and my

  1624. expectation

  1625. that as

  1626. these men

  1627. serve, the

  1628. Lord will

  1629. do in us

  1630. and through

  1631. us what

  1632. he did for

  1633. the church

  1634. here in

  1635. Acts chapter

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  1636. 6.

  1637. Look there

  1638. again to

  1639. verse 5.

  1640. Verse 5

  1641. says that

  1642. what they

  1643. said pleased

  1644. the whole

  1645. gathering,

  1646. and so they

  1647. chose Stephen,

  1648. a man full

  1649. of faith and

  1650. of the Holy

  1651. Spirit, and

  1652. Philip, and

  1653. Prochorus, and

  1654. Nicanor, and

  1655. Taman, and

  1656. Parmenas, and

  1657. Nicholas, a

  1658. proselyte of

  1659. Antioch.

  1660. These they

  1661. set before the

  1662. apostles and

  1663. they prayed and

  1664. laid hands on

  1665. them.

  1666. Listen to this.

  1667. And the word

  1668. of God

  1669. continued to

  1670. increase.

  1671. And the

  1672. number of the

  1673. disciples multiplied

  1674. greatly in

  1675. Jerusalem.

  1676. And a great

  1677. many of the

  1678. priests became

  1679. obedient to

  1680. the faith.

  1681. Don't you

  1682. want to see

  1683. that happen

  1684. here?

  1685. don't you

  1686. want to see

  1687. the word of

  1688. God increase

  1689. here?

  1690. Don't you

  1691. want to see

  1692. disciples multiplied

  1693. here?

  1694. I believe that

  1695. deacons and

  1696. their humble

  1697. need, meeting,

  1698. pastor, supporting,

  1699. unity, defending

  1700. ministry are a

  1701. crucial part of

  1702. that game.

  1703. The church

  1704. needs great

  1705. deacons.

  1706. why?

  1707. Ultimately

  1708. because when

  1709. they serve in

  1710. this way as

  1711. God has designed

  1712. for the good of

  1713. the church, they

  1714. show the church

  1715. and the world

  1716. what Jesus is

  1717. like.

  1718. Mark chapter

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1719. 10, one more

  1720. time.

  1721. Verse 45.

  1722. Jesus gives

  1723. them the ultimate

  1724. reason to serve

  1725. like this.

  1726. For even the

  1727. Son of Man

  1728. came not to be

  1729. served, but to

  1730. serve and to

  1731. give his life as

  1732. a ransom for

  1733. many.

  1734. Even the Son of

  1735. Man, Jesus Christ

  1736. himself, came not

  1737. to be deaconed, but

  1738. to deacon.

  1739. The Lord Jesus

  1740. himself, for the

  1741. sake of others

  1742. centered, church

  1743. building, need,

  1744. meeting, service,

  1745. humbled himself to

  1746. become a

  1747. servant.

  1748. covenant.

  1749. How great is the

  1750. Lord Jesus who

  1751. stooped down to

  1752. wash his disciples

  1753. feet?

  1754. How great is the

  1755. Son of God who

  1756. took on flesh to

  1757. come and to ransom

  1758. what's been lost?

  1759. How great is the

  1760. King who laid down

  1761. his life to bring

  1762. sinners like us into

  1763. his kingdom?

  1764. Do you see Jesus'

  1765. greatness?

  1766. Jesus served us.

  1767. I know that this

  1768. is primarily a

  1769. message for the

  1770. church about

  1771. deacons, and if

  1772. you're not a

  1773. believer and you're

  1774. here, you're hearing

  1775. this message, you

  1776. probably don't care a

  1777. thing about deacons and

  1778. why our church needs

  1779. deacons and what does

1780. this have to do with

  1781. you.

  1782. Listen to this.

1783. You may not care a

  1784. thing about that, but

1785. you should care that the

1786. Son of God himself has

  1787. stooped down to serve

  1788. you.

1789. That even the Son of

1790. Man came not to be

  1791. served, but to serve

1792. and to give his life as

  1793. a ransom for many.

  1794. You know, we often

1795. think the way to get

1796. right with God and to

  1797. maintain a good standing

1798. with God is to serve

  1799. him, right?

1800. If I can just serve him

1801. in the correct ways, he'll

  1802. love me.

1803. If I can serve him

  1804. better, maybe things will

1805. be right with me and

  1806. him.

1807. Let me be as clear as I

  1808. possibly can with you

  1809. this morning.

  1810. You cannot begin to

  1811. serve him unless you

  1812. have first allowed

  1813. Christ Jesus to serve

  1814. you.

  1815. Have you received the

  1816. service of Jesus by

  1817. faith?

1818. And church, for us, I

1819. hope you see we need

  1820. deacons like this.

  1821. We need deacons like

1822. this who will show us

  1823. the servant heart of

  1824. Christ that we might

  1825. see and experience

  1826. from one another what

1827. it means to be served

1828. and loved and cared for

  1829. by God himself.

1830. Now, we might have an

1831. example to follow as we

  1832. follow Christ.

  1833. And that this church

1834. might grow in health and

1835. unity and that the word

1836. of God might go forth in

  1837. power.

  1838. Amen?

  1839. Let's pray.

1840. Lord, we thank you for

1841. your wisdom and your good

  1842. design for your church.

  1843. It's not our church.

1844. It's not our plans for

1845. our church and what we

1846. want to do and what we

  1847. want to see happen.

  1848. It's not our design.

1849. God, we want to submit to

  1850. your word.

1851. What you have planned for

  1852. your church.

1853. So we praise you and we

1854. thank you for these two

1855. men, Bill and Randy, as

  1856. you've raised them up,

  1857. as this church has

  1858. affirmed their

  1859. qualifications as deacons.

1860. And we pray, God, that

1861. they would be a blessing

1862. to us as we look to

  1863. Christ.

1864. We love you, Lord, and we

1865. pray this in Jesus' name.

  1866. Amen.

  1867. Amen.

  1868. Amen.

  1869. Amen.

  1870. Amen.

  1871. Amen.

  1872. Amen.

  1873. Amen.

  1874. Amen.

  1875. Amen.

  1876. Amen.

  1877. Amen.

  1878. Amen.

  1879. Amen.

  1880. Amen.

  1881. Amen.

  1882. Amen.

  1883. Amen.

  1884. Amen.

  1885. Amen.
