  1. Please open up your Bibles this morning to the book of Daniel.

  2. And we're beginning a new series this morning in the book of Daniel.

  3. And I've been excited about opening up this book with you.

  4. But I also got to admit, I'm a little intimidated by this book.

  5. Daniel is not an easy book.

  6. It's not an easy book to understand.

  7. It's not an easy book to interpret.

  8. And I'm finding out it's not an easy book to preach.

  9. And so I appreciate your prayers for me.

  10. And as we begin, I would just like to give this qualification.

  11. You know, if you're not used to hearing a pastor or a preacher say things like,

  12. Hey, I'm not really sure what this means.

  13. Get used to it.

  14. We're about to hear that a lot as we walk through this book together.

  15. But all scripture is God-breathed.

  16. And is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.

  17. And so I am excited to open this book up together and hear from the word of the Lord.

  18. And grow together as we walk through the book of Daniel.

  19. So if you found it in your Bibles, Daniel is right there after the book of Ezekiel.

  20. Right before the book of Hosea.

  21. I do want you to have your Bibles open so we can lay eyes on it there together.

  22. And our passage this morning is going to be all of chapter 1.

  23. And so let's stand together in honor of the reading of God's word.

  24. Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  25. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah,

  26. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

  27. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand

  28. with some of the vessels of the house of God.

  29. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his God,

  30. and placed the vessels in the treasury of his God.

  31. Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch,

  32. to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility,

  33. youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom,

  34. endowed with knowledge, understanding, learning,

  35. and competent to stand in the king's palace,

  36. and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

  37. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate,

  38. and of the wine that he drank.

  39. They were to be educated for three years,

  40. and at the end of that time, they were to stand before the king.

  41. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.

  42. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names.

  43. Daniel he called Belteshazzar,

  44. Hananiah he called Shadrach,

  45. Mishael he called Meshach,

  46. and Azariah he called Abednego.

  47. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food,

  48. or with the wine that he drank.

  49. Therefore, he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

  50. And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs.

  51. And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel,

  52. I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink.

  53. For why should he see that you are in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age?

  54. So you would endanger my head with the king.

  55. Then Daniel said to the steward,

  56. whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel,

  57. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

  58. Test your servants for ten days.

  59. Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.

  60. Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you,

  61. and deal with your servants according to what you see.

  62. So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days.

  63. And at the end of the ten days,

  64. it was seen that they were better in appearance

  65. and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's food.

  66. So the steward took away their food and the wine that they were to drink

  67. and gave them vegetables.

  68. As for these four youths,

  69. God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom.

  70. And Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

  71. At the end of the time,

  72. when the king had commanded that they should be brought in,

  73. the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

  74. And the king spoke with them,

  75. and among all of them,

  76. none was found like Daniel,

  77. Hananiah,

  78. Mishael,

  79. and Azariah.

  80. Therefore they stood before the king.

  81. And in every matter of wisdom and understanding

  82. about which the king inquired of them,

  83. he found them ten times better

  84. than all the magicians and enchancers

  85. that were in all his kingdom.

  86. And Daniel was there until the first year

  87. of King Cyrus.

  88. The grass withers and the flower fades,

  89. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  90. Lord, we praise you for your word.

  91. And again, as we open up a new book this morning,

  92. we pray you would speak powerfully to us

  93. through your word.

  94. We pray in Jesus' name.

  95. Amen.

  96. You may be seated.

  97. When I was a college student,

  98. I was proud to be the only American member

  99. of the International Students Club.

  100. I saw that there was an opportunity there

  101. for ministry.

  102. The nations had come to my backyard

  103. there in Milledgeville, Georgia.

  104. And I wanted to influence as many of them

  105. as I possibly could

  106. with the good news of the gospel

  107. before they finished their studies

  108. and went back to their home countries.

  109. And so I made friends

  110. with the international students.

  111. I made friends from Kenya,

  112. friends from Pakistan.

  113. But eventually I got to know

  114. several of the Chinese students.

  115. In fact, Amanda and I,

  116. in our first apartment complex

  117. that we lived in,

  118. there in our college town

  119. after we got married,

  120. it was surrounded,

  121. all of our neighbors were Chinese.

  122. And a couple of times a month,

  123. sometimes more than that,

  124. we would be sitting in our living room,

  125. hanging out, watching television,

  126. whatever it might be,

  127. and we would begin to smell

  128. this incredible aroma

  129. wafting through the walls,

  130. the paper-thin walls

  131. of our apartment complex,

  132. coming in from the apartment next door.

  133. And after a while,

  134. we caught on.

  135. We knew what it was.

  136. It must be Dumpling Night.

  137. Soon enough,

  138. we would start to hear

  139. the voices gather.

  140. We would hear the footsteps

  141. up the stairs.

  142. We would hear the people

  143. coming together

  144. in the apartment next door,

  145. sometimes 10,

  146. sometimes 15,

  147. sometimes 20 Chinese students,

  148. gathering together

  149. to get a little taste of home

  150. while they were living

  151. in a foreign land.

  152. You see,

  153. something that we learned

  154. very quickly

  155. about these Chinese students

  156. was that

  157. while they were interested

  158. in learning about

  159. American culture,

  160. they wanted to be here,

  161. they came here intentionally,

  162. even so,

  163. they were eager

  164. to maintain

  165. their own

  166. distinct identity

  167. while they were living

  168. on foreign soil.

  169. they knew that

  170. their identity,

  171. they were Chinese men and women

  172. on temporary assignment

  173. here in America.

  174. Well,

  175. this morning,

  176. as we begin the book of Daniel,

  177. what we find is that

  178. Daniel is living

  179. in foreign territory.

  180. He's in exile.

  181. He's not just

  182. a foreign exchange student.

  183. He hasn't come here willingly.

  184. He's been taken captive

  185. out of his homeland.

  186. He's not excited

  187. about learning

  188. the culture of Babylon.

  189. But by God's

  190. sovereign appointment,

  191. he's here in Babylon.

  192. And by God's grace,

  193. he shows us

  194. what it looks like

  195. for us

  196. to maintain

  197. our distinct identity

  198. as citizens

  199. of God's kingdom

  200. even while living

  201. here

  202. in foreign

  203. enemy territory.

  204. The book of Daniel

  205. communicates

  206. key theological truths

  207. for exiles.

  208. And so,

  209. we'll begin

  210. the book of Daniel

  211. this morning

  212. with two key truths

  213. for exiles

  214. this morning.

  215. Two key truths

  216. for exiles

  217. to remember

  218. this morning.

  219. This will be our outline

  220. if you're taking notes

  221. this morning.

  222. Two key truths

  223. to remember

  224. in time of exile.

  225. First,

  226. the first truth

  227. for exiles

  228. to remember

  229. is that

  230. God

  231. is

  232. king.

  233. God

  234. is

  235. king.

  236. And we'll get

  237. to Daniel

  238. in a moment.

  239. But even though

  240. the book of Daniel

  241. bears his name,

  242. what I want us to

  243. understand here

  244. in this first point

  245. is that the book

  246. of Daniel

  247. ultimately

  248. is not primarily

  249. about Daniel.

  250. It's about

  251. Daniel's God.

  252. The book of Daniel

  253. is about

  254. the Lord.

  255. And we learn

  256. from Daniel

  257. and we learn

  258. from his story,

  259. but the primary

  260. lesson that runs

  261. throughout the book

  262. of Daniel

  263. is that

  264. there is a

  265. God

  266. who reigns

  267. and rules

  268. over all

  269. of human history.

  270. That there is

  271. a God

  272. and that

  273. he

  274. is king.

  275. Look there

  276. to verse 1.

  277. So the book

  278. of Daniel,

  279. it begins

  280. with a grim

  281. picture of

  282. the state

  283. of God's

  284. people.

  285. It says,

  286. In the third

  287. year of the reign

  288. of Jehoiakim,

  289. king of Judah,

  290. Nebuchadnezzar,

  291. king of Babylon,

  292. came to Jerusalem

  293. and besieged it.

  294. King Jehoiakim,

  295. he ruled from

  296. 609 B.C.

  297. to 598 B.C.

  298. over Judah.

  299. And as you read

  300. through the

  301. biblical historical

  302. books,

  303. they give you

  304. a pretty clear

  305. sense of,

  306. hey,

  307. this king

  308. was a good

  309. king.

  310. He led his

  311. people well.

  312. He honored

  313. the Lord.

  314. This king

  315. was an evil

  316. king.

  317. He led the

  318. people astray

  319. into idolatry.

  320. King Jehoiakim,

  321. I'm not going

  322. to get this

  323. right,

  324. y'all.

  325. King Jehoiakim

  326. was an evil

  327. king.

  328. Say that 10

  329. times fast.

  330. And in the

  331. third year

  332. of his reign,

  333. Babylon comes

  334. in and takes

  335. over.

  336. This was a

  337. three-part

  338. takeover.

  339. 605 B.C.

  340. was the first

  341. wave,

  342. and that's when

  343. Daniel and his

  344. friends are

  345. taken away.

  346. There's a second

  347. wave in 597,

  348. and then again

  349. in 587 B.C.,

  350. and by this point

  351. there's not much

  352. left of the city

  353. at all.

  354. This is a dark

  355. moment in the

  356. history of God's

  357. people,

  358. men and women.

  359. children are

  360. brutally murdered.

  361. The city is

  362. destroyed.

  363. The temple is

  364. destroyed.

  365. The city itself

  366. by 587 is

  367. burned to the

  368. ground.

  369. The city,

  370. this nation

  371. that was meant

  372. to be the

  373. central place

  374. of God's

  375. presence,

  376. the central

  377. place of God's

  378. glory in the

  379. midst of all the

  380. earth,

  381. was now totally

  382. taken over and

  383. destroyed by a

  384. pagan nation.

  385. From a purely

  386. human vantage

  387. point,

  388. from a purely

  389. human perspective,

  390. this looks like

  391. defeat,

  392. doesn't it?

  393. Everything is

  394. falling apart.

  395. Verse 2,

  396. it tells us that

  397. Nebuchadnezzar,

  398. he took some of

  399. the vessels out

  400. of the house of

  401. God and brought

  402. them into the

  403. house of his

  404. God and placed

  405. the vessels in

  406. the treasury of

  407. his God.

  408. This is an

  409. apparent triumph

  410. of the gods of

  411. Babylon over

  412. the God of

  413. Jerusalem.

  414. It's an apparent

  415. triumph of a

  416. sinful nation

  417. over and against

  418. God's people.

  419. How can this

  420. be?

  421. Why in the

  422. world is this

  423. happening?

  424. If you know

  425. your Old

  426. Testament,

  427. this shouldn't

  428. come as a

  429. surprise at all,

  430. should it?

  431. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 28 chapter mention

  432. chapter 28,

  433. in the law of

  434. Moses, the Lord

  435. had told them,

  436. if they kept

  437. covenant with

  438. the Lord.

  439. All these

  440. blessings would

  441. come upon them.

  442. Blessed would

  443. be the fruit of

  444. their womb.

  445. Blessed would

  446. be their land.

  447. Blessed would

  448. be their cattle,

  449. their basket,

  450. their kneading

  451. bowl.

  452. Their enemies

  453. would be defeated.

  454. They would be

  455. established.

  456. All of these

  457. blessings would

  458. come upon the

  459. people of God

  460. if they kept

  461. covenant with

  462. the Lord.

  463. But it also

  464. says, if they

  465. were faithless,

  466. if they broke

  467. covenant with

  468. the Lord.

  469. He says,

  470. the Lord will

  471. bring you and

  472. your king,

  473. whom you set

  474. over you,

  475. to a nation that

  476. neither you nor

  477. your fathers have

  478. known.

  479. They shall

  480. besiege you in

  481. all your towns

  482. until your high and

  483. fortified walls in

  484. which you trusted

  485. come down throughout

  486. all your land.

  487. What I want us to

  488. understand is that

  489. this dark moment in

  490. the history of God's

  491. people was exactly

  492. what God had warned

  493. them would happen

  494. if they rebelled

  495. against the Lord.

  496. And he didn't just

  497. warn them once.

  498. This wasn't just a

  499. one-time thing.

  500. This is what the

  501. prophets warned the

  502. people of God about

  503. time and time and

  504. time and time again.

  505. Jeremiah warned them

  506. this was coming.

  507. Chapter 21,

  508. chapter 25.

  509. Isaiah prophesied

  510. this moment.

  511. Isaiah 39,

    Isaiah 39:6

  512. verse 6.

  513. It's like when you

  514. get pulled over by a

  515. police officer for

  516. speeding.

  517. Now you're going to

  518. have to imagine,

  519. because I know all of

  520. you drive the speed

  521. limits, right?

  522. You get pulled over

  523. by a police officer.

  524. You knew the law.

  525. You knew you were

  526. driving too fast.

  527. You knew you should

  528. have buckled up and

  529. followed the rules,

  530. but you get pulled

  531. over and just imagine

  532. he says, I will let

  533. you off with a warning

  534. this time.

  535. And then he walks

  536. back to his car.

  537. The wise response for

  538. us would be buckle up,

  539. drive away very slowly,

  540. obey the law from now

  541. on, do exactly as he

  542. said.

  543. But instead of doing

  544. that, we slam our

  545. foot on the gas and

  546. we speed away 89

  547. miles an hour down

  548. the road.

  549. And then another

  550. police officer comes

  551. and he warns us the

  552. same thing.

  553. You better not go

  554. over the speed limit.

  555. I'll give you a

  556. warning this time.

  557. Same thing, we speed

  558. off down the road

  559. another police officer

  560. time and time and

  561. time and time and

  562. time again.

  563. These officers are

  564. far more merciful and

  565. patient than any I've

  566. come in contact with,

  567. right?

  568. But at some point,

  569. your lawlessness is

  570. going to catch up with

  571. you.

  572. Justice demands that

  573. your lawlessness be

  574. punished.

  575. And for Israel, that

  576. time has come right

  577. now.

  578. This dark moment in

  579. history is God's

  580. judgment on their

  581. rebellion.

  582. But you know, one of

  583. the beautiful parts of

  584. reading biblical

  585. history is that we

  586. don't only get the

  587. view from the ground,

  588. so to speak, from a

  589. human vantage point.

  590. We get the view from

  591. the air.

  592. We get the Lord's

  593. vantage point.

  594. Now again, from the

  595. ground, from a sheerly

  596. human point of view,

  597. all of this looks

  598. hopeless.

  599. Now all of this looks

  600. like the world itself is

  601. caving in and everything

  602. is falling apart.

  603. The bad guys have come

  604. in.

  605. The city is destroyed.

  606. It looks like evil has

  607. won.

  608. But Daniel gives us

  609. another perspective.

  610. Look to verse 2.

  611. He says,

  612. The Lord gave Jehoiakim,

  613. king of Judah,

  614. into his hand.

  615. The Lord gave.

  616. These three words

  617. completely change the

  618. lens through which we

  619. look out and interpret

  620. all the affairs of human

  621. history.

  622. Now I realize we haven't

  623. made much progress in

  624. Daniel chapter 1, right?

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  625. Yeah, I think we will.

  626. I'm going to try to.

  627. But I want to make this

  628. point first because this

  629. is a theme that runs

  630. throughout the entire

  631. book of Daniel.

  632. God is the king of

  633. human history.

  634. God is the king of all

  635. the nations of the earth.

  636. God is the sovereign

  637. ruler of all the affairs

  638. of man.

  639. everything that happens

  640. in human history,

  641. all the events of human

  642. history, big and small,

  643. significant and seemingly

  644. meaningless.

  645. All of them from

  646. beginning to end are in

  647. the hands of a good and

  648. sovereign God.

  649. Whatever happens here,

  650. God is king.

  651. Who is responsible for

  652. this exile?

  653. From a human vantage point,

  654. Nebuchadnezzar saw and

  655. Nebuchadnezzar came, he

  656. saw and Nebuchadnezzar

  657. conquered, right?

  658. But from the divine

  659. perspective, Daniel says

  660. the Lord gave.

  661. I'm hammering this point

  662. because Daniel, he repeats

  663. this for us.

  664. I feel like this is an

  665. emphasis for him.

  666. In fact, three times in

  667. this chapter, you see that

  668. phrase over and over and

  669. over again, the Lord gave.

  670. The Lord gave Jehoiakim,

  671. king of Judah, into the

  672. hands of Nebuchadnezzar,

  673. verse 2.

  674. The Lord gave Daniel favor

  675. and compassion in the

  676. sight of the chief of the

  677. eunuchs, verse 9.

  678. The Lord gave Daniel and

  679. his friends learning and

  680. skill in all literature and

  681. wisdom, verse 17.

  682. That repetition is

  683. intentional.

  684. Daniel, he wants to

  685. comfort exiles with the

  686. truth of the sovereignty

  687. of God.

  688. So that we no longer see

  689. history or current events

  690. just from an on-the-ground

  691. perspective, but rather we

  692. learn to see things from the

  693. divine perspective.

  694. That whatever may come to

  695. pass, God is king.

  696. Nothing happens apart from

  697. his sovereign decree.

  698. Nothing is given to you but

  699. by his sovereign hand.

  700. God is king.

  701. Now, that's bad news for a

  702. faithless people.

  703. That's bad news for those who

  704. are still in rebellion against

  705. the Lord.

  706. He is patient with you.

  707. He is slow to anger, but he

  708. is just.

  709. And the time will come when

  710. justice will demand pain for

  711. lawlessness.

  712. His kindness and patience is

  713. meant to lead you to

  714. repentance.

  715. It's bad news for those who

  716. rebel against the Lord, but

  717. for those who do trust in the

  718. Lord, church, his kingship is a

  719. glorious comfort, is it not?

  720. And when the world around us

  721. seems to have lost its ever

  722. loving mind, and when the

  723. place where we live seems like

  724. it's crumbling to the ground,

  725. when everything looks dark, and

  726. from our perspective it looks

  727. hopeless, we remember and we

  728. take comfort in the fact that

  729. God is king.

  730. Here at the beginning of the

  731. book of Daniel, I want us to see

  732. that we, Christian, we have far

  733. more in common with Daniel than we

  734. might tend to think.

  735. Church, we, like Daniel, are

  736. exiles.

  737. The book of 1 Peter, what we

  738. read this morning, it calls us,

  739. it calls Christians sojourners

  740. and exiles.

  741. You realize we, you and I, we as

  742. Christians are citizens of another

  743. kingdom.

  744. Scott reminded me of an old song a

  745. couple weeks ago in the men's

  746. Bible study.

  747. I wish he was here because he

  748. would love that I quoted it.

  749. This world is not my home.

  750. I'm just a passing through.

  751. Y'all know this one.

  752. My treasures are laid up somewhere

  753. beyond the blue.

  754. The angels beckon me from heaven's

  755. open door and I can't feel at home

  756. in this world anymore.

  757. Y'all know that one.

  758. Is that true of you?

  759. See, Christian, we are exiles.

  760. Make no mistake, America, as many

  761. blessings as we have here, as

  762. wonderful as this place may be.

  763. America is not a lasting home for

  764. us.

  765. It wasn't so 10 years ago or 30

  766. years ago or 50 years ago or 100

  767. years ago and it will not be so 100

  768. years in the future unless the Lord

  769. returns.

  770. America is not the promised land.

  771. Church, we need to understand where

  772. we live, America is just our little

  773. corner of Babylon.

  774. And if that's true, then we shouldn't

  775. be surprised by any evil that surrounds

  776. us here.

  777. We shouldn't be surprised when leaders

  778. fail us.

  779. We shouldn't be surprised when wars

  780. break out.

  781. We shouldn't be surprised when people

  782. hate each other, when there's lawlessness

  783. and godlessness all around us.

  784. We should not be surprised.

  785. Why?

  786. Because this place is Babylon.

  787. We're exiles here.

  788. It shouldn't surprise us.

  789. But it also shouldn't shake us.

  790. Why?

  791. Because we know that no matter what

  792. happens here and now, God is king.

  793. You know, sometimes the way Christians

  794. react to current events and the way that

  795. we talk or post on social media, we kind of

  796. sound like Chicken Little, don't we?

  797. The sky is falling.

  798. The sky is falling.

  799. Everything's crumbling to the ground.

  800. The church, there's chaos all around us.

  801. Make no mistake.

  802. But we of all people ought to rest in the

  803. sovereign rule of God, no matter what

  804. happens here and now.

  805. Amen?

  806. Amen?

  807. Instead of panicking over the question, what

  808. has this world come to?

  809. I think the church ought to spend more time

  810. asking the question, how can we, Christian,

  811. how can we, Siwe Bay, remain distinct during

  812. our time of exile?

  813. How can we remain distinct as God's people living

  814. here in foreign territory?

  815. Which is why the second truth we must remember.

  816. Number one, God is king.

  817. And number two, praise God, you are his.

  818. You are his.

  819. Now let's see Daniel's story.

  820. Verse three, it says that not only did Nebuchadnezzar

  821. bring the vessels of God out of the house of God

  822. and put them into the house of his God,

  823. but he also sent Ashpenaz to bring out some of the

  824. best people out of Israel, out of the royal family

  825. and of the nobility.

  826. It says youths without blemish, of good appearance

  827. and skillful in all wisdom.

  828. They're endowed with knowledge and understanding

  829. and learning and they're competent to stand

  830. in the king's palace.

  831. These teenagers at this point, these men

  832. were the cream of the crop.

  833. They're young, they're intelligent, they're influential,

  834. they're nobility and most importantly,

  835. or at least as Nebuchadnezzar thought,

  836. they were impressionable.

  837. It says in verse four that he was going to teach them

  838. the literature and the language of the Chaldeans

  839. and he assigns them a daily portion of food

  840. that the king himself ate.

  841. This was good food.

  842. And a portion of wine that the king himself drank.

  843. This is good wine.

  844. And it's going to go on like this for three years.

  845. Now at the end of this period of three years,

  846. these men would stand before the king.

  847. That was the plan.

  848. His plan was cultural indoctrination.

  849. And this is a strategy.

  850. To take the best and the brightest of Israel,

  851. of Judah, to take the best and the brightest

  852. and to make them now good, educated, successful Babylonians.

  853. See, his strategy was he didn't just want to conquer them.

  854. He wanted to absorb them.

  855. They would learn the literature of Babylon.

  856. They would learn the language of Babylon.

  857. Not only this, they would even be given new Babylonian names.

  858. I remember growing up,

  859. multiple times my mom correcting anybody and everybody

  860. who would call me anything besides Jonathan.

  861. Right?

  862. That was the name my mama gave me.

  863. Nobody was allowed to shorten it.

  864. If they called me John,

  865. I remember her correcting them,

  866. no, his name is Jonathan.

  867. There was meaning behind that name.

  868. My dad's name is David.

  869. And biblically in the Bible,

  870. you know the Old Testament,

  871. David and Jonathan were best friends.

  872. And it had meaning to that name.

  873. She didn't want anybody changing that name.

  874. Well, names in the ancient Near East culture were significant.

  875. They carried meaning.

  876. They meant something.

  877. And so what Nebuchadnezzar is trying to do here

  878. is he's stripping away any reference to Israel's God

  879. and he's replacing them.

  880. He's redefining them in terms of the false Babylonian gods.

  881. This is an attempt to redefine who they are.

  882. So Daniel, which meant God is judge,

  883. is now Belt-Shazzar,

  884. which is a reference to the false god Bel.

  885. Hananiah, which meant Yahweh is gracious,

  886. is now Shadrach at the command of Aku.

  887. That's a reference to the moon god.

  888. Mishael, which meant who is what God is,

  889. is now Mishak, who is what Aku is.

  890. Azariah, which meant Yahweh helps,

  891. is now Abednego, servant of Nego,

  892. the god of wisdom.

  893. You see what's going on here?

  894. Nebuchadnezzar is trying to take the people of the Lord

  895. and convince them from the inside out

  896. that no, now you belong to me,

  897. you belong to my people,

  898. you belong to my culture,

  899. you belong to my gods.

  900. This was a plan of cultural indoctrination.

  901. Well, Daniel knew what was up, didn't he?

  902. He could see the plan.

  903. And so, for this reason,

  904. verse 8 says,

  905. Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself

  906. with the king's food.

  907. You know, a lot has been made

  908. of Daniel's decision here.

  909. This is where, I guess,

  910. I guess this is where people get the Daniel diet, right?

  911. And the diet may be just fine.

  912. It would probably be good for some of us

  913. to eat a little bit more veggies.

  914. Amen? Right?

  915. But may I suggest

  916. that that is missing the point just a little bit.

  917. This is not a divinely inspired meal plan

  918. for us to follow.

  919. The point isn't the food or the diet.

  920. Don't get hung up on the food.

  921. The point is that Daniel and his friends,

  922. they're resisting at whatever level they can,

  923. becoming a Babylonian,

  924. even while they're living stuck here in Babylon.

  925. He knows that God is king.

  926. He knows that he belongs to him

  927. wherever he may be,

  928. Jerusalem or Babylon.

  929. And because of this,

  930. he knows that he and the rest of God's people

  931. are called to be distinct

  932. from the nations around them.

  933. And he knows that Nebuchadnezzar,

  934. king of Babylon,

  935. is trying everything he can

  936. to turn Daniel and his friends

  937. into good Babylonians.

  938. And so he resists.

  939. Now notice here

  940. how Daniel resists.

  941. Just really quickly here

  942. because I think this is appropriate

  943. for us by way of application.

  944. He's not loud.

  945. He's not obnoxious.

  946. He doesn't pitch a fit.

  947. He doesn't protest

  948. or post a social media rant

  949. or cause a scene

  950. about how unfair everything is here in Babylon

  951. for him and his Jewish friends.

  952. He doesn't dig in his heels

  953. and say,

  954. Jehoiakim's my king,

  955. not Nebuchadnezzar.

  956. I know very humbly,

  957. very respectfully,

  958. and certainly prayerfully,

  959. knowing what we know about Daniel,

  960. he asks the chief eunuchs

  961. to allow him to not defile himself.

  962. And we see that God the king

  963. gave Daniel favor and compassion.

  964. And so verse 11,

  965. it tells us that they came to a deal.

  966. Ten days.

  967. You got ten days.

  968. Give us some veggies and water.

  969. See for yourself.

  970. Test us in ten days.

  971. See what we look like.

  972. And at the end of the ten days,

  973. verse 15,

  974. it says that they were better in appearance

  975. and fatter in flesh

  976. than all the youths

  977. who ate the king's food.

  978. And so the steward took away

  979. their food and wine

  980. that they were supposed to drink

  981. and instead gave them vegetables.

  982. What we see here

  983. is that the Lord honored

  984. their faithfulness to him.

  985. The Lord honored their desire

  986. to be distinct in exile.

  987. And what was the result?

  988. Look to verse 17.

  989. God gave them learning

  990. and skill and wisdom.

  991. And he gave Daniel

  992. understanding and visions and dreams.

  993. And after three years of faithfulness,

  994. after three years

  995. of resisting the pressures

  996. to become good Babylonians,

  997. three years of clinging

  998. to their identity

  999. as the people of God,

  1000. the time has come

1001. that came before the king.

  1002. And verse 20 says

1003. he found them ten times better

  1004. than all the magicians

  1005. and enchanters

1006. that were in all his kingdom.

  1007. He was vindicated

  1008. in his resolve

1009. to remain distinct in exile.

  1010. You know,

1011. this is the beginning of a theme,

  1012. again,

1013. that we're going to see

1014. over and over and over again

1015. in this book of Daniel.

  1016. God's people are here.

  1017. They're exiles in Babylon.

  1018. They're pressured

  1019. and they're threatened,

1020. yet they remain distinct in exile.

  1021. And at the end,

1022. they are honored and vindicated.

1023. And we'll see this theme

1024. again and again and again.

1025. And we need to understand,

  1026. Christian,

1027. that this is our pattern as well.

1028. We are here in exile.

1029. We are going to be pressured

1030. to succumb to the pressures

1031. in the culture of Babylon.

1032. And those who remain distinct

  1033. at the end

  1034. when we stand before

  1035. the King of Kings,

  1036. we will be honored

  1037. and vindicated.

  1038. We have to remember,

  1039. church,

  1040. the time will come,

  1041. whether in this life

1042. and certainly in the one to come,

1043. when all of God's people

  1044. who remain faithful

1045. in their time of exile

  1046. will be vindicated.

  1047. vindicated.

1048. The world may look at us funny

  1049. right now

  1050. as we make efforts

  1051. to be distinct.

1052. We may be strange now,

1053. but the time will come

1054. when we will all stand

  1055. before the true King

1056. and all who remain distinct

  1057. will be vindicated.

1058. But until that day comes,

  1059. friend,

1060. we must do as Daniel does

  1061. in this passage.

  1062. We must remember

  1063. that God is King

1064. and that we are His.

  1065. I had a seminary professor

1066. who used to say often,

  1067. you know,

  1068. the most important thing

  1069. about you

1070. is not who you are,

  1071. it's whose you are.

  1072. The most important thing

  1073. about you

1074. is not who you are,

1075. it's not where you happen

  1076. to grow up,

1077. it's not where you live,

1078. it's not what college sports team

  1079. you root for,

1080. it's not what hobbies you have,

1081. it's not what your interests are.

1082. If you've put your faith

  1083. in Jesus Christ

1084. by the grace of God,

  1085. the most important thing

  1086. about you

1087. is that you belong to Him.

1088. That you are a citizen

1089. of the kingdom of God.

1090. Wherever He may have you

  1091. here on this earth,

  1092. that's your identity.

1093. And if we are citizens

  1094. of His kingdom,

  1095. then just like Daniel,

1096. we need to be aware

  1097. that the ruler

  1098. of this present phase

  1099. of Babylon

1100. is going to do anything

  1101. and everything He can

  1102. to make you

  1103. a good Babylonian.

  1104. Church,

1105. we need to be aware

  1106. that the tactics

  1107. against God's people

  1108. have not changed

  1109. one single bit.

  1110. Think with me here

  1111. about Nebuchadnezzar's strategy

  1112. just for a moment,

  1113. really it's threefold.

  1114. Think about it.

  1115. How did He seek

  1116. to conquer God's people?

  1117. How did He seek

  1118. to make them Babylonians?

  1119. It's a three-part strategy.

  1120. It really is brilliant.

  1121. Separation,

  1122. satisfaction,

  1123. satisfaction,

  1124. satisfaction.

  1125. It's a three-part strategy

  1126. of Babylon.

  1127. Separation,

  1128. saturation,

  1129. satisfaction,

  1130. and nothing has changed.

  1131. Tactic number one

  1132. was separation.

1133. He took these men away.

  1134. He took them away

  1135. from God's people,

  1136. took them away

  1137. from corporate worship,

  1138. took them away

  1139. from instruction

1140. in the Word of God.

  1141. He took them away

  1142. from their place,

  1143. away from their people,

  1144. away from their practices.

  1145. Tactic number one

1146. was that He separated them.

  1147. Don't you think

1148. the enemy wants to do that

  1149. with you, Christian?

  1150. The enemy would love

  1151. nothing more

  1152. than to separate you

1153. from the people of God.

1154. He would love nothing more

  1155. than to separate you

  1156. from the gift

  1157. of corporate worship,

  1158. from the gift

  1159. of instruction

1160. in the Word of God.

  1161. Do not take gatherings

  1162. like this

  1163. with God's people

  1164. for granted.

  1165. You know that this,

  1166. of all the places

  1167. of the world,

  1168. this is the closest

  1169. that we will get

  1170. to heaven

  1171. on this side

  1172. of eternity.

1173. You know the local church

  1174. is an embassy

1175. of the kingdom of God

  1176. here on earth?

  1177. Don't take this gathering

  1178. for granted.

  1179. There are Christians

  1180. all over the world

  1181. who long

1182. for what we have here.

1183. Do not let the enemy

  1184. separate you.

  1185. Tactic number two

  1186. was saturation.

1187. He not only took them

  1188. from their religious culture,

  1189. he also saturated them

  1190. with his pagan culture.

  1191. Do you see this?

  1192. He taught them

  1193. all the books.

  1194. He taught them

  1195. the language.

1196. He gave them new names.

  1197. He poured this

  1198. cultural system

  1199. right down their throats.

  1200. And again,

  1201. don't you realize,

  1202. the playbook

  1203. hasn't changed a bit.

  1204. The television shows

  1205. that we watch

  1206. are not neutral.

1207. The news that we consume

  1208. is not neutral.

1209. The books that we read

  1210. are not neutral.

1211. The music that we listen to

  1212. is not neutral.

1213. The culture that we live in

  1214. is not neutral.

1215. Our neighbors that we talk to

  1216. are not neutral.

  1217. Everywhere we turn,

  1218. the enemy is seeking

  1219. to saturate you

  1220. with lies.

  1221. The church needs

  1222. to develop discernment.

  1223. We need to watch

  1224. what we eat.

  1225. Our call as exiles

  1226. here in Babylon

1227. is as Paul calls us

  1228. in Romans 12,

  1229. do not be conformed

  1230. to the patterns

  1231. of this world,

  1232. but instead be what?

  1233. Be transformed

  1234. by the renewal

  1235. of your mind.

  1236. We're called

  1237. to take every thought

  1238. captive

  1239. and make it obedient

  1240. to Christ.

  1241. Are we careful

  1242. what we're saturating

  1243. our minds with,

  1244. church?

  1245. Are we careful

  1246. what we're saturating

  1247. our hearts with?

  1248. If we're not actively

  1249. clinging to the truth

  1250. of God's word,

  1251. we will passively drift

  1252. into the lies

  1253. of the culture.

  1254. Separation,

  1255. saturation,

  1256. and tactic number three,

  1257. satisfaction.

  1258. He saturated them

  1259. with pagan culture

  1260. and he wanted them

  1261. to like it.

  1262. And notice this,

  1263. he didn't feed them

  1264. with scraps,

  1265. did he?

1266. And what did he want

  1267. to feed them with?

  1268. What did he want

  1269. them to eat?

  1270. He wanted them

1271. to have the king's best food,

1272. the food that the king

  1273. himself ate,

1274. the wine that the king

  1275. himself drank.

  1276. He wanted them

  1277. to have the best,

  1278. the richest,

  1279. the fattest,

  1280. the most delicious meat

  1281. that he possibly could.

  1282. He wanted them

  1283. to drink the king's

  1284. own supply of wine.

  1285. He wanted to seduce

  1286. and satisfy them

  1287. into thinking,

  1288. well, maybe this place

1289. isn't so bad after all.

  1290. Maybe this king

1291. is nicer than we thought.

  1292. Maybe Jerusalem

  1293. wasn't so great

  1294. after all.

  1295. And again,

  1296. the playbook

  1297. has not changed.

  1298. Church,

  1299. the devil's favorite tool

  1300. is not pain.

  1301. It's pleasure.

  1302. He wants you

  1303. to love sin.

  1304. The devil wants

1305. to wine and dine you

  1306. with the pleasures

  1307. of Babylon,

  1308. but he always hides

  1309. the price

  1310. and he never pays

  1311. the bill.

1312. It's like when you go

  1313. to one of these

  1314. fancy restaurants

  1315. that doesn't have

  1316. prices on the menu

  1317. and you eat yourself

  1318. full,

  1319. whatever you want.

  1320. You buy an appetizer

  1321. and main course

  1322. and three desserts

  1323. and then the bill

  1324. comes due.

  1325. And you realize

  1326. the cost

  1327. of satisfying

  1328. your appetites.

  1329. Friend,

  1330. we would be wise

  1331. to count

  1332. the cost

  1333. now

  1334. before the bill

  1335. comes due.

  1336. If you haven't

  1337. figured this out yet,

  1338. the enemy's tactics

  1339. have not changed

  1340. a single bit.

  1341. The tactic of Babylon

  1342. in every age

  1343. is to separate you

  1344. from the ways

  1345. of God,

  1346. to saturate you

  1347. with the ways

  1348. of this world

  1349. and to make sure

  1350. you like it.

  1351. our call

  1352. as God's people,

  1353. our call

  1354. as exiles

  1355. living here

  1356. in foreign territory

  1357. is to say

  1358. wherever God

  1359. has placed me,

  1360. whatever evil

  1361. I face,

  1362. I will be set

  1363. apart from the ways

  1364. of the world,

  1365. I will be saturated

  1366. with the word

  1367. of God,

  1368. I will satisfy

  1369. my heart

  1370. and the Lord

  1371. above all else.

  1372. Are you committed

  1373. to this?

  1374. if you are

  1375. His,

  1376. your call

  1377. is to live

  1378. your life

  1379. here in exile

  1380. faithfully

  1381. to the King

  1382. of Kings.

  1383. Your call

  1384. is to be

  1385. distinct

  1386. in exile.

  1387. Why?

  1388. Because despite

  1389. whatever the

  1390. apparent appearance

  1391. of defeat

  1392. may be,

  1393. we know

  1394. the truth,

  1395. church.

  1396. We know

  1397. the truth

  1398. of the gospel

  1399. that God

  1400. has done

  1401. for you

  1402. in much

  1403. more powerful,

  1404. much more

  1405. eternal

  1406. and effective

  1407. ways

  1408. what Nebuchadnezzar

  1409. only attempted

  1410. and failed

  1411. to do

  1412. with Daniel

  1413. and his friends.

  1414. Church,

  1415. the good news

  1416. of the gospel

  1417. is that God

  1418. has sent

  1419. His own Son

  1420. to live

  1421. and to die

  1422. and to rise

  1423. in our place

  1424. in order

  1425. to bring

  1426. us out

  1427. of our

  1428. state

  1429. of lawlessness

  1430. and into

  1431. His marvelous

  1432. grace.

  1433. The good news

  1434. of the gospel

  1435. is that the

  1436. Son of God

  1437. Himself

  1438. bore the

  1439. punishment

  1440. that we

  1441. deserve

  1442. for our

  1443. sin

  1444. so that He

  1445. might call

  1446. us out

  1447. of belonging

  1448. to this

  1449. present darkness

  1450. and make us

  1451. citizens

  1452. of the

  1453. kingdom

  1454. of God.

  1455. The good

  1456. news of the

  1457. gospel is that

  1458. God has

  1459. separated

  1460. you

  1461. from belonging

  1462. to this place

  1463. and given

  1464. you a new

  1465. identity

  1466. as His

  1467. Son and

  1468. His

  1469. daughter.

  1470. The good

  1471. news of the

  1472. gospel is that

  1473. by faith

  1474. in Christ

  1475. God has

  1476. saturated

  1477. you.

  1478. He has

  1479. filled you

  1480. with His

  1481. own Holy

  1482. Spirit.

  1483. The good

  1484. news of the

  1485. gospel is that

  1486. God has

  1487. worked a

  1488. miracle in

  1489. us by

  1490. giving us

  1491. a new

  1492. heart

  1493. that hates

  1494. sin and

  1495. loves the

  1496. Lord.

  1497. He has

  1498. satisfied

  1499. you with

  1500. the goodness

  1501. of God

  1502. and the

  1503. glory of

  1504. Jesus Christ.

  1505. That's the

  1506. gospel.

  1507. church.

  1508. This is what

  1509. God has

  1510. done for

  1511. you in

  1512. Christ.

  1513. And although

  1514. it looks

  1515. dark now,

  1516. our certain

  1517. hope of the

  1518. gospel is that

  1519. when He

  1520. comes,

  1521. Babylon will

  1522. be judged

  1523. and we

  1524. as God's

  1525. people will

  1526. be vindicated.

  1527. Revelation

    Revelation 2:17

  1528. 2 verse

  1529. 17 tells us

  1530. we will be

  1531. given a new

  1532. name.

  1533. Given to

  1534. us by our

  1535. King.

  1536. Do you

  1537. believe this?

  1538. Is this

  1539. your hope?

  1540. Friend, if

  1541. you have

  1542. not put

  1543. your faith

  1544. in King

  1545. Jesus,

  1546. the time

  1547. is now.

  1548. What keeps

  1549. you from

  1550. saying right

  1551. now that I

  1552. see that Babylon

  1553. is a sinking

  1554. ship, I want

  1555. no part of

  1556. it, I want

  1557. to belong to

  1558. the King of

  1559. Kings, I put

  1560. my faith in

  1561. King Jesus

  1562. right now.

  1563. What prevents

  1564. you?

  1565. And for

  1566. us, church,

  1567. as we live

  1568. here in

  1569. exile, our

  1570. call is to

  1571. help one

  1572. another to

  1573. remain

  1574. distinct

  1575. while we're

  1576. on temporary

  1577. assignment here

  1578. in America.

  1579. You know, I

  1580. didn't tell you

  1581. the full story

  1582. about my

  1583. Chinese

  1584. neighbors.

  1585. the friends

  1586. who came

  1587. were gathering

  1588. to have a

  1589. Chinese cultural

  1590. experience, but

  1591. the host who

  1592. gathered her

  1593. friends there for

  1594. dumpling night, she

  1595. was a Christian.

  1596. And she wasn't

  1597. just having a

  1598. Chinese cultural

  1599. experience, although

  1600. that was part of

  1601. it.

  1602. She was using

  1603. these gatherings

  1604. as an opportunity

  1605. to share the

  1606. good news of

  1607. Jesus with

  1608. her Chinese

  1609. brothers and

  1610. sisters.

  1611. You see, she

  1612. understood that

  1613. wherever the

  1614. Lord had her, be

  1615. it China, be

  1616. it Milledgeville,

  1617. Georgia, wherever

  1618. the Lord had

  1619. her, the most

  1620. important thing

  1621. about her was

  1622. not who she

  1623. was, but who

  1624. she was.

  1625. She knew that

  1626. God is king and

  1627. that she belonged

  1628. to him.

  1629. Now, her call was

  1630. to remain distinct

  1631. here in exile and

  1632. to call as many

  1633. as she possibly

  1634. could to come

  1635. with her out

  1636. of Babylon.

  1637. And church, that's

  1638. our call as

  1639. well.

  1640. Are you

  1641. prepared to

  1642. resist the

  1643. influence around

  1644. us?

  1645. To resist the

  1646. urge to primarily

  1647. identify ourselves

  1648. with anything other

  1649. than the call of

  1650. God and Christ

  1651. Jesus for you?

  1652. God is king and

  1653. we are his.

  1654. Let's pray.

  1655. Lord, we need

  1656. your grace.

  1657. We need your

  1658. help.

  1659. We know even as

  1660. we've already

  1661. prayed, we are

  1662. prone to wonder,

  1663. each one of us.

  1664. And Lord, it's so

  1665. easy to be

  1666. deceived and

  1667. lured astray by

  1668. the pleasures and

  1669. the enticements of

  1670. the world around

  1671. us.

  1672. But God, we know

  1673. that, Father, in

  1674. your presence there

  1675. is fullness of

  1676. joy.

  1677. And at your

  1678. right hand there

  1679. are pleasures

  1680. forevermore.

  1681. There is no

  1682. pleasure that you

  1683. would withhold

  1684. from us.

  1685. It's all found

  1686. in Christ.

  1687. And so we pray,

  1688. Lord, that we

  1689. would look forward

  1690. to the kingdom

  1691. to come.

  1692. That we would

  1693. long for the

  1694. return of Christ.

  1695. That we would

  1696. live as distinct

  1697. exiles here in

  1698. Babylon.

  1699. We love you,

  1700. Lord.

  1701. We pray this in

  1702. Jesus' name.

  1703. Amen.
