  1. Amen. Well, please open up your Bibles to the book of Daniel.

  2. We'll be in Daniel chapter 3 this morning.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  3. We've made our way to Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  4. And so when you found that in your Bibles, let's stand for the reading of God's Word.

  5. Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  6. King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, whose height was 60 cubits and its breadth 6 cubits.

  7. He set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.

  8. Then king Nebuchadnezzar sent together the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image that king Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  9. Then the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that king Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  10. and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  11. And the herald proclaimed aloud,

  12. You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages,

  13. that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,

  14. and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image

  15. that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

  16. And whoever does not fall down and worship

  17. shall immediately be cast into a burning, fiery furnace.

  18. Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,

  19. and every kind of music,

  20. all the peoples, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the golden image

  21. that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  22. Therefore, at that time, certain Chaldeans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews.

  23. They declared to King Nebuchadnezzar,

  24. O king, live forever.

  25. You, king, have made a decree that every man who hears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,

  26. and every kind of music shall fall down and worship the golden image.

  27. And whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into a burning, fiery furnace.

  28. There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon,

  29. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  30. These men, O king, pay no attention to you.

  31. They do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.

  32. Then Nebuchadnezzar, in a furious rage, commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought.

  33. So they brought these men before the king.

  34. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them,

  35. Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up?

  36. Now if you are ready, when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music,

  37. to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good.

  38. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning, fiery furnace.

  39. And who is the God who will deliver you out of my hands?

  40. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king,

  41. O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.

  42. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning, fiery furnace.

  43. And he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.

  44. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.

  45. Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury, and the expression of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  46. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated.

  47. And he ordered some of the mighty men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  48. and to cast them into the burning, fiery furnace.

  49. Then these men were bound in their cloaks, their tunics, their hats, and their other garments,

  50. and they were thrown into the burning, fiery furnace.

  51. Because the king's order was urgent and the furnace was overheated,

  52. the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  53. And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell bound into the burning, fiery furnace.

  54. Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste.

  55. He declared to his counselors,

  56. Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?

  57. They answered and said to the king,

  58. True, O king.

  59. He answered and said,

  60. But I see four men, unbound, walking in the midst of the fire,

  61. and they are not hurt,

  62. and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.

  63. Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning, fiery furnace,

  64. and he declared,

  65. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

  66. servants of the Most High God, come out and come here.

  67. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire.

  68. And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king's counselors gathered together

  69. and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men.

  70. The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed,

  71. and no smell of fire had come upon them.

  72. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said,

  73. Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

  74. who has sent his angel and delivered his servants who trusted in him

  75. and set aside the king's command

  76. and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own god.

  77. Therefore I make a decree,

  78. any people, nation, or language

  79. that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  80. shall be torn limb from limb

  81. and their houses laid in ruins

  82. for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.

  83. Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  84. in the province of Babylon.

  85. This is the holy word of God.

  86. If you would, let's pray once more.

  87. Lord, we have read your word, we've opened it up,

  88. and now we seek your help to understand it.

  89. So we pray, Father, would you give us ears to hear

  90. and hearts to receive your word this morning.

  91. We pray in Christ's name.

  92. Amen.

  93. You may be seated.

  94. Amen.

  95. On April 18, 1521,

  96. Martin Luther stood at the Diet of Worms

  97. in front of Emperor Charles V

  98. where he would have to answer two questions.

  99. Question number one,

  100. did he actually write the 25 pieces of literature

  101. that they had assembled there together for their examination,

  102. which according to them contained heretical teachings

  103. against the church and her doctrine?

  104. And if so, question number two,

  105. would he recant?

  106. Luther was already officially excommunicated from the church,

  107. but now he faced an additional threat of the imperial ban,

  108. which would come with it,

  109. the threat against his life.

  110. So Luther, wisely so,

  111. requested a little bit of time to pray.

  112. He retreated and prayed

  113. and came back to face the emperor

  114. and gave one of what I believe is

  115. one of the most moving speeches

  116. in all of Christian history.

  117. He said the following,

  118. Unless I am convinced by the testimony

  119. of the Holy Scriptures

  120. or by evident reason,

  121. for I believe neither pope nor councils alone,

  122. as it is clear that they have erred repeatedly

  123. and contradicted themselves,

  124. I consider myself convicted

  125. by the testimony of the Holy Scriptures,

  126. which is my basis.

  127. My conscience is captive to the word of God.

  128. Thus I cannot and will not recant,

  129. because acting against one's own conscience

  130. is neither safe nor sound.

  131. Here I stand,

  132. I can do no other.

  133. God help me.

  134. Amen.

  135. Don't you love stories like this?

  136. Stories like this from church history

  137. of Christians taking a stand

  138. at risk to their own life.

  139. They move us.

  140. We find encouragement from them

  141. because while we may never

  142. have to stand before the emperor,

  143. if we belong to the kingdom of God,

  144. we will face trials and temptations

  145. and tribulations here in the kingdom of man.

  146. The stories like Luther's

  147. and like Daniel's

  148. and like Shadrach's, Meshach's,

  149. and Abednego here in Daniel chapter 3

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  150. this morning show us

  151. what can we expect

  152. as citizens of God's kingdom

  153. living here in the kingdom of man.

  154. The question that I want us to ask this morning

  155. as we look at Daniel chapter 3

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  156. is simply what can we expect?

  157. What can we expect

  158. as citizens of God's kingdom

  159. here in the kingdom of man?

  160. What should you expect

  161. if you are a follower of Christ

  162. here in the kingdom of man?

  163. I want to give us three expectations

  164. from Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  165. Three expectations.

  166. Number one, first,

  167. God's people should expect

  168. temptation and tension.

  169. God's people should expect

  170. temptation and tension.

  171. Look there starting in verse 1

  172. of chapter 3.

  173. You remember last week in chapter 2

  174. God gave Nebuchadnezzar a dream

  175. of this great image.

  176. You remember this dream?

  177. And the head of the image

  178. was made of gold.

  179. And you remember this

  180. represented Nebuchadnezzar

  181. and it represented

  182. the kingdom of Babylon.

  183. But the rest of the image

  184. it was composed of

  185. these different materials

  186. and these different materials

  187. represented different kingdoms

  188. that would come after Nebuchadnezzar.

  189. This was God's revealed plan

  190. for the future.

  191. Well, it seems like

  192. here in chapter 3

  193. Nebuchadnezzar has his own plan.

  194. He makes his own image.

  195. This image,

  196. if we follow the measurements,

  197. it's about 90 feet tall

  198. and about 9 feet wide

  199. and it's not made up

  200. of different composite parts.

  201. What's it made up out of?

  202. It's all made of gold.

  203. As if to say,

  204. as long as I can,

  205. for as much as I can,

  206. I'm going to rule over my kingdom

  207. and I'm going to get the glory.

  208. We need to understand this image

  209. is an image of pride

  210. and defiance.

  211. Which is interesting

  212. because Daniel tells us

  213. that Nebuchadnezzar

  214. builds this giant golden image

  215. in the plain of Dura,

  216. which is the exact place,

  217. geographically,

  218. where the Tower of Babel

  219. was constructed.

  220. All these years ago

  221. in Genesis chapter 11,

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  222. you remember the Tower of Babel

  223. where all the peoples of the earth,

  224. all the nations of the earth

  225. gathered together

  226. in defiance

  227. against God's command

  228. to scatter

  229. and spread the earth,

  230. spread his glory

  231. amongst the earth.

  232. And they gathered together

  233. to say,

  234. let us make a name

  235. for ourselves.

  236. This was defiance

  237. and pride.

  238. History is repeating itself here.

  239. See, there's this theme,

  240. this thread

  241. of pride

  242. and defiance

  243. and self-exaltation

  244. that runs all the way

  245. through human history

  246. beginning with the Garden of Eden

  247. and that will not be

  248. finally done away with

  249. until the return of Christ.

  250. This is characteristic

  251. of the kingdom of man.

  252. So we see here,

  253. this is a man-centered,

  254. self-exalting worship service.

  255. And Nebuchadnezzar sets up.

  256. He gathers all the officials,

  257. all his people,

  258. and he makes a proclamation,

  259. verse 4,

  260. that you are commanded,

  261. O peoples,

  262. nations,

  263. languages,

  264. when you hear the sound

  265. of all of these musical instruments

  266. that I will not read again.

  267. And every kind of music,

  268. you are to fall down

  269. and worship

  270. the image

  271. that King Nebuchadnezzar

  272. has set up.

  273. And whoever does not worship

  274. and does not fall down

  275. shall immediately

  276. face judgment.

  277. They'll be cast

  278. into a burning,

  279. fiery furnace.

  280. Well, verse 7 says,

  281. the music begins to play,

  282. the worship service

  283. has begun,

  284. and all the people's,

  285. nations,

  286. languages fell down

  287. and worshiped

  288. worshiped

  289. the golden image

  290. that King Nebuchadnezzar

  291. has set up,

  292. all the peoples that is

  293. except for three.

  294. The Chaldeans,

  295. they noticed

  296. these men refusing

  297. to bow down

  298. to the image.

  299. And so verse 8 tells us

  300. that certain Chaldeans

  301. came forward

  302. and ratted them out.

  303. They said,

  304. these certain Jews,

  305. Nebuchadnezzar,

  306. who you appointed

  307. over the affairs of Babylon,

  308. sounds like a little bit

  309. of jealousy there,

  310. possibly.

  311. They pay no attention

  312. to you.

  313. They don't serve your gods.

  314. They don't worship

  315. the golden image

  316. that you set up.

  317. And as you would expect,

  318. Nebuchadnezzar

  319. was furious about this.

  320. And he brought the men

  321. in before him.

  322. He said,

  323. is this true?

  324. Do you really not

  325. worship my gods?

  326. Do you really

  327. disregard my command?

  328. Do you really not

  329. bow down to this golden image

  330. that I set up?

  331. But he said,

  332. here's one more shot.

  333. I'll stand here and watch.

  334. And when you hear the music,

  335. if you will bow down

  336. and worship,

  337. then well and good.

  338. But if you won't,

  339. there's a burning,

  340. fiery furnace

  341. waiting for you.

  342. And who is the God

  343. who will deliver you

  344. out of my hands?

  345. And now,

  346. finally,

  347. we get to hear

  348. from Shadrach,

  349. Meshach,

  350. and Abednego.

  351. Verse 16.

  352. Look there with me.

  353. I love how they respond

  354. to the king.

  355. They say,

  356. O Nebuchadnezzar,

  357. we have no need

  358. to answer you

  359. in this matter.

  360. If this be so,

  361. our God,

  362. whom we serve,

  363. is able to deliver

  364. from the fiery furnace.

  365. And he will deliver us

  366. out of your hand,

  367. O king.

  368. But if not,

  369. do you hear that?

  370. But even if not,

  371. be it known to you,

  372. O king,

  373. that we will not

  374. serve your gods

  375. or worship the golden image

  376. that you

  377. have set up.

  378. You know,

  379. this is the only time

  380. in all of scripture

  381. that we hear Shadrach,

  382. Meshach,

  383. and Abednego speak.

  384. And it's here

  385. in this moving speech.

  386. Now these three men,

  387. they give us an example

  388. of what it looks like

  389. to refuse to bow the knee

  390. to anyone

  391. or anything

  392. outside of the one

  393. true God.

  394. Now these three men,

  395. they teach us

  396. how to resist

  397. the idols of our time

  398. and how to live

  399. in the tension

  400. that we all feel

  401. being a citizen

  402. of God's kingdom

  403. here in the kingdom

  404. of man.

  405. Now I'll never forget

  406. when I was living

  407. in Charlotte,

  408. I walked,

  409. I took a walk one day,

  410. I lived down the road

  411. from a Buddhist temple.

  412. And I walked

  413. down the road

  414. and went into

  415. this Buddhist temple

  416. and I saw

  417. lining the walls

  418. were hundreds

  419. of physical idols.

  420. These man-made images,

  421. these man-made gods

  422. that somebody

  423. had to craft

  424. and piece together

  425. with their own hands.

  426. Somebody had to

  427. pick them up

  428. and put them

  429. on the shelf.

  430. From time to time,

  431. somebody has to come by

  432. and dust off

  433. these dirty gods.

  434. They've got to walk

  435. carefully,

  436. they don't want to

  437. bump into the shelf

  438. because if they do,

  439. that god will fall

  440. off the shelf

  441. and shatter into pieces.

  442. But I saw people

  443. in there bowing down

  444. and worshiping

  445. these false images.

  446. And to me,

  447. it seems so obvious.

  448. This is foolishness.

  449. This is empty.

  450. Why are they doing this?

  451. But church,

  452. we need to understand

  453. the truth is that

  454. all of us

  455. are tempted

  456. to worship idols.

  457. All of us

  458. worship idols.

  459. We may never

  460. bow down

  461. to physical images,

  462. physical idols

  463. on a wall,

  464. but I want to be clear

  465. with you this morning.

  466. All of us

  467. are tempted

  468. to idolatry.

  469. Every one of us

  470. is prone

  471. to worship

  472. and serve

  473. created things

  474. rather than

  475. the creator.

  476. That's idolatry.

  477. Idolatry

  478. isn't simply

  479. bowing down

  480. to a physical image

  481. on a wall

  482. or a golden statue

  483. that's 90 feet tall.

  484. Idolatry

  485. is allowing

  486. anyone

  487. or anything

  488. to take

  489. God's rightful place

  490. in our heart.

  491. So we may never

  492. bow down

  493. to a golden statue,

  494. but we may

  495. worship our bank account.

  496. we may

  497. bow down

  498. to the attention

  499. of others.

  500. We may

  501. not ever

  502. bow down

  503. to golden statues,

  504. but we may

  505. make idols

  506. of our spouse,

  507. of our children,

  508. of our grandchildren,

  509. of our jobs.

  510. We may be

  511. drawn to adopt

  512. the idols

  513. of our culture.

  514. You realize

  515. our culture

  516. idolizes sex,

  517. self-determination,

  518. social status,

  519. social approval,

  520. the accumulation

  521. of stuff.

  522. How much stuff

  523. can I get?

  524. The newest gadget,

  525. the newest thing,

  526. the nicer house,

  527. the nicer car.

  528. Church,

  529. whatever it may be,

  530. the kingdom of man

  531. would love

  532. to make anything

  533. the center

  534. of our heart's affection

  535. besides the one person

  536. who rightly deserves

  537. to be there.

  538. We have to

  539. expect this

  540. and resist it.

  541. Not only this,

  542. these three men

  543. also teach us

  544. how to live

  545. in the tension

  546. as citizens

  547. of God's kingdom

  548. living here

  549. in the kingdom of man.

  550. Do you ever feel

  551. that tension?

  552. If you're a Christian,

  553. again,

  554. your identity

  555. is that you are

  556. a citizen

  557. of God's kingdom,

  558. which means

  559. the Lord

  560. is your ultimate authority.

  561. You bow the knee

  562. ultimately

  563. to Him.

  564. But even so,

  565. we live here

  566. on earth,

  567. here in all in all,

  568. South Carolina,

  569. here in America.

  570. We are a citizen

  571. of this physical place

  572. and we live

  573. under earthly authority.

  574. So how do we handle

  575. that tension?

  576. Our statement of faith,

  577. it has an article

  578. concerning civil government

  579. and it says this,

  580. it says,

  581. we believe

  582. that civil government

  583. has been divinely appointed

  584. for the benefit

  585. and good order

  586. of human society

  587. and that public officials

  588. are to be prayed for,

  589. honored,

  590. and conscientiously obeyed,

  591. except only in things

  592. opposed to the will

  593. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  594. who is the only Lord

  595. of the conscience

  596. and the prince

  597. of the kings

  598. of the earth.

  599. So on the one hand,

  600. we believe,

  601. along with Paul

  602. in Romans 13,

  603. we believe

  604. that we're called

  605. to honor

  606. and obey

  607. our earthly authorities.

  608. We believe

  609. that they're appointed

  610. by God Himself

  611. and that means

  612. whether or not

  613. we like them,

  614. whether or not

  615. we voted for them,

  616. whether or not

  617. we believe

  618. they have rightfully

  619. taken that place

  620. of authority,

  621. we believe

  622. that we are called

  623. to pray for

  624. and honor

  625. those earthly authorities

  626. that have been placed

  627. over us.

  628. But on the other hand,

  629. we believe

  630. that we must

  631. disobey

  632. any earthly authority

  633. who would command us

  634. to do anything

  635. God forbids

  636. or forbid us

  637. to do anything

  638. God commands.

  639. You hear that?

  640. We must

  641. disobey

  642. any earthly authority

  643. who would command us

  644. to do anything

  645. God forbids

  646. or would forbid us

  647. to do anything

  648. God commands.

  649. Well,

  650. clearly here,

  651. Nebuchadnezzar

  652. commands them

  653. to do something

  654. God forbids

  655. and so they remember

  656. who they truly serve

  657. and church,

  658. so must we.

  659. We would be wise

  660. to expect

  661. temptation

  662. and tension

  663. here in the kingdom

  664. of man.

  665. If we're a citizen

  666. of God's kingdom,

  667. we should expect

  668. temptation

  669. and tension

  670. and second,

  671. we should expect

  672. that when we

  673. resist temptation

  674. and when we resist

  675. our earthly authorities

  676. here in this world,

  677. we should expect

  678. that that will not

  679. be well received.

  680. The second expectation

  681. here for God's people,

  682. God's people

  683. should expect

  684. trials and tribulations

  685. here in the kingdom

  686. of man.

  687. God's people

  688. should expect

  689. trials

  690. and tribulations

  691. here in the kingdom

  692. of man.

  693. You know,

  694. there are some people

  695. who think

  696. that if you are

  697. one of God's people

  698. or maybe if you just

  699. have enough faith

  700. that you won't face

  701. any hardship

  702. in your life.

  703. You won't face

  704. any trial.

  705. If you're right

  706. in the center

  707. of God's will,

  708. all should go well

  709. with you.

  710. You won't face

  711. any issue,

  712. but I want to make

  713. as clear as I possibly

  714. can this morning

  715. that's false.

  716. Story after story

  717. after story

  718. after story

  719. from God's word,

  720. story after story

  721. after story

  722. after story

  723. from the history

  724. of God's people

  725. and church history

  726. tells us that

  727. here in the kingdom

  728. of man,

  729. God's people

  730. should expect

  731. trials and tribulations.

  732. You know,

  733. about a month

  734. after Luther's speech,

  735. the emperor,

  736. you can imagine,

  737. did not receive

  738. that well.

  739. The emperor

  740. condemned Luther

  741. as a notorious heretic

  742. and an enemy

  743. of the state

  744. and he forbid

  745. the citizens

  746. of the empire

  747. from reading

  748. or spreading

  749. any of Luther's ideas

  750. and he even

  751. gave permission

  752. for any citizen

  753. to kill Martin Luther

  754. without any consequence.

  755. His resistance

  756. was not well received.

  757. And here,

  758. after Shadrach

  759. and Meshach

  760. and Abednego

  761. give their speech

  762. in front of the king

  763. in verse 19,

  764. we see again

  765. Nebuchadnezzar

  766. is filled

  767. with fury

  768. and he orders

  769. the furnace

  770. to be heated

  771. seven times more

  772. than it was usually heated

  773. and he orders

  774. some of the strong men

  775. of his army

  776. to tie them up

  777. and to cast them

  778. into the fire

  779. and in fact,

  780. verse 22,

  781. it says,

  782. the fire was so overheated,

  783. his order was so urgent

  784. that the flame

  785. killed those strong men

  786. who took up

  787. Shadrach,

  788. Meshach,

  789. and Abednego

  790. and these three men

  791. fell bound

  792. into the fiery furnace.

  793. They were persecuted

  794. for their loyalty

  795. to the Lord

  796. and to his kingdom.

  797. And of course,

  798. we know how this story

  799. eventually ends

  800. and we'll get there,

  801. but I'd like to point out

  802. here in the second point

  803. that if their story

  804. ended right here,

  805. with these men

  806. being thrown

  807. into the fiery furnace,

  808. with these men

  809. being punished

  810. and persecuted

  811. for bowing the knee

  812. to the Lord,

  813. if their story

  814. ended right here,

  815. it would be a fairly

  816. common story

  817. in church history.

  818. The extraordinary part

  819. of the story

  820. is not the suffering.

  821. It's the miraculous

  822. deliverance

  823. from the suffering

  824. that's extraordinary.

  825. But the suffering here,

  826. the consequence

  827. for being faithful

  828. in the present evil age,

  829. that is to be expected

  830. for them and church,

  831. for us.

  832. 1 Peter chapter 4

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  833. tells us,

  834. do not be surprised

  835. when the fiery trial

  836. comes upon you

  837. to test you

  838. as though something

  839. strange were happening

  840. to you.

  841. Don't be surprised

  842. by it.

  843. Expect it,

  844. in other words.

  845. You know,

  846. this sounds strange

  847. to our modern ears,

  848. doesn't it?

  849. Because here

  850. in our current time

  851. and our current place,

  852. here in America

  853. in 2024,

  854. we have it pretty safe,

  855. don't we?

  856. It does seem strange

  857. when a fiery trial

  858. comes upon us,

  859. doesn't it?

  860. But we need to understand

  861. that the comfort

  862. that we enjoy here,

  863. right now,

  864. is not the norm

  865. for the history

  866. of the church,

  867. and it's not the norm

  868. for the global church,

  869. of which we are

  870. a small part.

  871. Open Doors

  872. released the results

  873. of their 2024

  874. World Watch List study.

  875. It's a study

  876. that analyzes

  877. Christian persecution

  878. throughout the world,

  879. and their most recent

  880. numbers show

  881. that on average,

  882. 13 Christians

  883. are killed

  884. every day

  885. for professing

  886. faith in Christ.

  887. That's about

  888. one every two hours.

  889. And so,

  890. from the time

  891. we gathered

  892. for Sunday school

  893. to the time

  894. we go out here

  895. to celebrate

  896. and eat cookies,

  897. church,

  898. a brother or sister

  899. has given their life

  900. for professing

  901. faith in Christ.

  902. During their research

  903. period,

  904. they found that

  905. over 4,000 Christians

  906. were detained

  907. without trial,

  908. arrested,

  909. sentenced,

  910. or imprisoned.

  911. 3,900 believers

  912. were abducted,

  913. more than 46,000

  914. Christians suffered

  915. some sort of abuse,

  916. nearly 300,000

  917. Christians were

  918. forced to leave

  919. their homes,

  920. go into hiding,

  921. or flee their

  922. country of origin,

  923. and more than

  924. 14,000 churches,

  925. Christian schools,

  926. hospitals,

  927. and other buildings

  928. were targeted

  929. last year,

  930. which was a 700%

  931. increase over

  932. the previous year.

  933. I don't share

  934. all of that

  935. to worry you

  936. or to scare you,

  937. but to tell you

  938. that we ought

  939. to expect

  940. this sort of thing

  941. here in the

  942. kingdom of man.

  943. And Jesus tells us

  944. what to expect

  945. in Luke chapter 21.

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  946. He told his disciples,

  947. you will be hated

  948. by all

  949. for my name's sake,

  950. but not a hair

  951. of your head

  952. will perish.

  953. By your endurance

  954. you will gain

  955. your lives.

  956. Church,

  957. I just want to ask,

  958. does that sound

  959. strange to you?

  960. I'll give you

  961. another example,

  962. another story,

  963. this one from

  964. the book of Acts,

  965. where Paul comes

  966. to Lystra,

  967. and the Jews

  968. come from Antioch

  969. and from Iconium,

  970. and they come

  971. and they beat him

  972. so badly

  973. that they dragged

  974. him out of the city

  975. and they thought

  976. he was dead.

  977. You know this story?

  978. But it says that

  979. he gets up

  980. and the very next day

  981. he goes on

  982. preaching the gospel,

  983. and then when they

  984. preached in that city

  985. and made many disciples

  986. in that city,

  987. it says he went

  988. back to Lystra

  989. and back to Iconium

  990. and back to Antioch,

  991. right back where

  992. he was just beaten

  993. half to death,

  994. right back where

  995. his enemies

  996. had just come from,

  997. and it says

  998. he strengthened

  999. the souls of the disciples,

  1000. encouraging them

1001. to continue in the faith

  1002. and saying that

  1003. through many tribulations

  1004. we must enter

  1005. the kingdom of God.

  1006. Y'all better believe

  1007. that's a sermon

  1008. they would not forget.

  1009. Church,

  1010. we will suffer

  1011. on the way

  1012. to glory.

1013. We have to expect this.

  1014. And that may sound

  1015. intimidating,

  1016. it may sound

  1017. discouraging to you,

  1018. but we also

  1019. should take comfort,

  1020. church,

  1021. that for the children

  1022. of God

  1023. no trial

  1024. is wasted.

  1025. The very same fire

  1026. that the kingdom

  1027. of this world

  1028. would use

  1029. to destroy

  1030. the people

  1031. of God,

  1032. the Lord would use

  1033. to refine

  1034. the people

  1035. of God.

  1036. And we just sang

  1037. a few moments ago,

  1038. didn't we?

  1039. When through fiery trials

  1040. thy pathway should lie,

  1041. my grace all-sufficient

  1042. shall be thy supply.

  1043. The flame

  1044. shall not hurt thee,

  1045. I only design

  1046. your dross

  1047. to consume

  1048. and thy gold

  1049. to refine.

  1050. See,

  1051. the enemy,

  1052. he intends

  1053. the flame

  1054. to destroy us,

  1055. but the Lord

  1056. designs the flame

  1057. to purify us,

  1058. to burn away

  1059. the dross

  1060. and to purify

  1061. and refine

  1062. the gold.

  1063. I'll give you

  1064. one more story.

  1065. I told you

  1066. Martin Luther's story,

  1067. I'll share another.

  1068. This one from

  1069. the English Reformation.

  1070. It's a story

  1071. of Latimer

  1072. and Ridley.

  1073. Do you know

  1074. those names?

  1075. Maybe not.

  1076. Ridley was

  1077. an outspoken

  1078. critic of

  1079. Bloody Mary

  1080. who earned

  1081. that name,

  1082. if you don't know,

  1083. by burning

  1084. hundreds of

  1085. Protestants

  1086. at the stake.

  1087. And both

  1088. of these men

  1089. were arrested

  1090. and were tried.

  1091. They went to trial

  1092. for treason

  1093. and for heresy,

  1094. which under

  1095. Mary's new

  1096. reformed heresy

  1097. law came with

  1098. the punishment,

  1099. the sentence

  1100. of being burned

  1101. at the stake.

  1102. And so,

  1103. you know,

  1104. this might seem

  1105. like a good time

  1106. to walk it back.

  1107. It might seem

  1108. like a good time

  1109. to beg for mercy,

  1110. but instead

  1111. what we see

  1112. is they faced

  1113. this trial

  1114. with boldness

  1115. and confidence

  1116. in the Lord.

  1117. Apparently,

  1118. during the public

  1119. trial,

  1120. Ridley would put

1121. a cap on his head

  1122. any time the Pope's

  1123. name was mentioned.

  1124. When they brought

  1125. up charges

  1126. that Ridley

  1127. denied the validity

  1128. of the Mass,

  1129. he simply said,

  1130. Christ made

  1131. one perfect

  1132. sacrifice

  1133. for the sins

  1134. of the world.

  1135. Neither can

  1136. any man

  1137. reiterate

  1138. that sacrifice

  1139. of his.

  1140. When the day

  1141. came for them

  1142. to die,

  1143. Latimer

  1144. walked slowly

  1145. up to the stake.

  1146. He was older

  1147. than Ridley,

  1148. but Ridley

  1149. walked straight up

  1150. as quickly

  1151. as he could.

  1152. And when they

  1153. gave him

  1154. the opportunity

  1155. to recant

  1156. his statements

  1157. against Mary

  1158. and against

  1159. the Catholic

  1160. Church in England,

  1161. he said,

  1162. so long

  1163. as the breath

  1164. is in my body,

  1165. I will never

  1166. deny my Lord

  1167. Christ

  1168. and his known

  1169. truth.

  1170. And they

  1171. chained these

  1172. men to the stake,

  1173. they placed a bag

  1174. of gunpowder

  1175. on their necks

  1176. and they lit

  1177. the wood

  1178. beneath their feet.

  1179. Fox's book

  1180. of martyrs

  1181. tells us

  1182. Latimer called

  1183. out to Ridley

  1184. and said,

  1185. be of good comfort,

  1186. Master Ridley

  1187. and play the man.

  1188. We shall this day

  1189. light such a candle

  1190. by God's grace

  1191. in England

  1192. as I trust

  1193. shall never

  1194. be put out.

  1195. Church,

  1196. how many stories

  1197. can we tell?

  1198. Now,

  1199. the day may never

  1200. come for you

  1201. to have to pay

  1202. a price like that.

  1203. It may.

  1204. But whatever form

  1205. it may take,

  1206. while we're here

  1207. in Babylon,

  1208. church,

  1209. we should expect

  1210. trials

  1211. and tribulations.

  1212. Are you ready?

  1213. Will you remain

  1214. faithful to your Lord?

  1215. We should expect

  1216. to suffer here

  1217. on the way

  1218. to glory.

  1219. But third,

  1220. we praise God

  1221. that God's people

  1222. should expect

  1223. third,

  1224. total deliverance

  1225. in the end.

  1226. God's people

  1227. should expect

  1228. total deliverance

  1229. in the end.

  1230. Now,

  1231. this was the hope

  1232. of Shadrach,

  1233. Meshach,

  1234. and Abednego.

1235. Let me read it again.

  1236. Did you catch it?

  1237. Verse 17.

  1238. It said,

  1239. Our God

  1240. whom we serve

1241. is able to deliver us

  1242. from the burning,

  1243. fiery furnace,

1244. and He will deliver us

  1245. out of your hand.

1246. Do you hear that confidence?

  1247. But even if not,

1248. even if He doesn't save us

  1249. from this burning,

  1250. fiery furnace,

1251. even if He doesn't spare

  1252. our life

  1253. from this present persecution,

  1254. we will not worship

  1255. your golden image.

  1256. See,

  1257. their ultimate hope

  1258. wasn't necessarily

  1259. that the Lord

  1260. would deliver them

  1261. from this trial,

  1262. although they knew

  1263. God was able.

  1264. their ultimate hope

1265. was that in the end,

1266. the Lord would deliver them

  1267. from every trial.

  1268. We believe He's able

  1269. and that He ultimately

  1270. will deliver us.

  1271. But even if not

  1272. from this trial,

  1273. Nebuchadnezzar,

1274. we will never bow the knee

  1275. to any God

1276. but the one true Lord.

1277. And we see that God

  1278. does something extraordinary

  1279. here in verse 24.

  1280. It says,

  1281. King Nebuchadnezzar

  1282. was astonished

1283. and he rose up in haste

  1284. and he declared,

  1285. Hey,

1286. didn't we cast three men

  1287. into the fire?

  1288. And they said,

  1289. Yeah,

  1290. Shadrach,

  1291. Meshach,

  1292. Abednego,

  1293. that's three.

  1294. He answered and said,

1295. But I see four men

1296. and they're not tied up anymore.

  1297. They're unbound

  1298. and they're not suffering.

  1299. They're walking

1300. in the midst of the fire

1301. and they're not in pain.

  1302. They're not hurt

  1303. and the appearance

  1304. of the fourth guy

  1305. is different.

1306. He's like a son of the gods.

  1307. And Nebuchadnezzar

1308. came near to the door

1309. of the burning fiery furnace

  1310. and he declared,

  1311. Shadrach,

  1312. Meshach,

  1313. Abednego,

1314. servants of the Most High God,

1315. come out and come here.

1316. So they come out of the fire

1317. and all the king's men

  1318. gathered together

1319. and they see that fire,

  1320. that fire of persecution,

1321. that fire of this world's punishment

1322. of the people of God,

  1323. that fire of suffering

1324. that the enemy would inflict

1325. on those who remain faithful

  1326. to the Lord,

1327. that fire had no power

  1328. over these men.

  1329. Their hair wasn't singed,

  1330. their cloaks weren't burnt,

1331. they had no smell of fire.

  1332. And in verse 28,

  1333. Nebuchadnezzar was so impressed,

  1334. things flip completely

  1335. on their head,

  1336. don't they?

  1337. He said,

  1338. verse 28,

  1339. Blessed be the God

  1340. of Shadrach,

  1341. Meshach,

  1342. and Abednego,

1343. who has sent his angel

  1344. and delivered his servants

  1345. who trusted in him

1346. and set aside the king's command

1347. and yielded up their bodies

1348. rather than serve and worship

1349. any God except their own.

  1350. Therefore,

  1351. I make a decree,

  1352. any people,

  1353. nation,

  1354. or language

  1355. that speaks anything

  1356. against the God

  1357. of Shadrach,

  1358. Meshach,

  1359. and Abednego

1360. shall be torn limb from limb

1361. and their houses laid in ruins

1362. for there is no other God

1363. who is able to rescue

  1364. in this way.

  1365. And the king promoted

  1366. Shadrach,

  1367. Meshach,

  1368. and Abednego

1369. in the province of Babylon.

  1370. A complete reversal

  1371. has taken place.

  1372. Do you see it?

  1373. This is complete,

  1374. total,

  1375. miraculous deliverance,

  1376. not from the fire,

  1377. but through the fire.

  1378. God has brought

  1379. their ultimate expectation

  1380. of deliverance

  1381. into the present moment.

  1382. It was exactly

  1383. as God promised

  1384. in Isaiah 43.

  1385. When you pass

  1386. through the waters,

1387. I will be with you.

  1388. Through the rivers,

1389. they shall not overwhelm you.

  1390. When you walk

  1391. through the fire,

1392. you shall not be burned

  1393. and the flame

  1394. shall not consume you.

1395. For I am the Lord,

  1396. your God,

1397. the Holy One of Israel,

  1398. your Savior.

  1399. What an incredible story.

  1400. It's incredible.

1401. But what I want us

  1402. to understand

  1403. is that as incredible

  1404. as this act

  1405. of deliverance was,

  1406. this deliverance,

  1407. this salvation,

  1408. this redemption

  1409. from the fire

1410. is just a small image

  1411. of the greater deliverance

  1412. yet to come

  1413. in the gospel

  1414. of Jesus Christ.

1415. I wonder if you notice

  1416. here, church,

  1417. that the same cycle

1418. has happened three times now

1419. in the book of Daniel.

  1420. We're three chapters in.

1421. It happened in chapter one,

  1422. in chapter two,

  1423. in chapter three.

  1424. They all tell

1425. the same type of story.

  1426. Have you seen it?

  1427. It's not just

  1428. aimless repetition here.

  1429. God's people

  1430. are in exile.

  1431. They are tempted.

  1432. They are tested.

  1433. They are refined

  1434. through the fires

  1435. of suffering

  1436. and temptation,

  1437. but the faithful resist.

  1438. Even in the face

  1439. of death,

1440. they cling to their identity

  1441. as citizens

  1442. of God's kingdom.

  1443. They put their trust

  1444. in the Lord

  1445. and despite the enemy's

  1446. best attempts

  1447. to snuff them out,

  1448. they are delivered,

  1449. they are exalted,

  1450. and God is praised.

1451. Have you seen that cycle?

1452. Have you caught on yet?

  1453. Exile,

  1454. temptation,

  1455. suffering,

  1456. salvation,

  1457. exaltation.

  1458. There's a pattern here.

  1459. Church,

  1460. this is the pattern

1461. of every child of God

  1462. in every age

1463. here in the kingdom of man.

  1464. But here's what I want you

  1465. to understand,

  1466. church.

  1467. This is our story

  1468. because ultimately

  1469. this is Christ's story.

  1470. This is our pattern

  1471. because ultimately

  1472. this is Jesus' pattern.

1473. If anyone was a stranger

  1474. in enemy territory,

  1475. who was it?

  1476. It was Jesus

  1477. who was king

  1478. of another kingdom

1479. and yet he stepped down

  1480. into our fallen world

  1481. willingly.

  1482. Was Jesus not tempted?

  1483. He was tempted

  1484. and tried

  1485. in every way

  1486. as we are

  1487. yet without sin.

  1488. He faced temptation

  1489. to worship

  1490. and serve every idol

  1491. here in the kingdom

1492. of man that we are.

  1493. Satan brought him

  1494. up to the top

  1495. of the mountain

  1496. and showed him

  1497. all the kingdoms

  1498. of this world

  1499. and said,

1500. all this can be mine

1501. if you will bow down

  1502. and serve me.

1503. All this can be yours

  1504. and yet Jesus

  1505. faithfully resisted

  1506. and for that church

  1507. he suffered

  1508. and eventually

  1509. he died

  1510. on the cross

  1511. in our place.

  1512. He would not just

  1513. walk beside us

  1514. in our suffering.

  1515. He would take

  1516. our place

  1517. and suffer the wrath

  1518. of God

  1519. that we deserved

  1520. in our place

  1521. as a substitute

  1522. in our place.

  1523. He bore our wrath,

  1524. our punishment.

  1525. But church,

  1526. death would not be

  1527. the end for him.

  1528. He would walk

  1529. out of the grave

  1530. resurrected,

  1531. raised to life,

  1532. vindicated and exalted

  1533. and in his exaltation

  1534. God is forever praised.

1535. Do you see the pattern?

  1536. This story is ultimately

  1537. pointing us forward

  1538. to the story,

  1539. to Jesus

  1540. and to our life

  1541. in him.

  1542. Church,

  1543. our pattern

  1544. is Christ's pattern.

  1545. By faith in him

  1546. we are united

  1547. to Jesus Christ.

  1548. His life

  1549. is our life.

  1550. His righteousness

  1551. is our righteousness.

  1552. His glory

  1553. is our hope

  1554. and our glory.

  1555. So again,

  1556. 1 Peter chapter 4,

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  1557. we rejoice

  1558. insofar as you share

  1559. in Christ's sufferings

1560. so that you may also

  1561. rejoice and be glad

  1562. when his glory

  1563. is revealed.

  1564. Or again,

  1565. as Paul says

  1566. in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1567. that we are heirs

  1568. of God

  1569. and fellow heirs

  1570. with Christ

  1571. provided we suffer

  1572. with him

  1573. that we may also

  1574. be glorified

  1575. with him.

1576. This is what we ought

  1577. to expect

  1578. and hope for.

  1579. Church,

  1580. we can cling

  1581. to the promises

  1582. of God

  1583. in any suffering

  1584. in any trial

  1585. knowing that

  1586. if we have been

  1587. united with him

1588. in a death like his

  1589. we shall certainly

  1590. be united with him

  1591. in a resurrection

  1592. like his.

  1593. We can expect

  1594. total deliverance

  1595. from every trial

  1596. because Christ

  1597. has defeated

  1598. all our enemies

  1599. and he is exalted

  1600. and we are one

  1601. with him

  1602. through faith.

  1603. I'll remind you again

  1604. of a quote

  1605. that I know

  1606. I've shared this before,

  1607. Charles Simeon.

  1608. He says,

  1609. we must not mind

  1610. a little suffering

  1611. for Christ's sake.

  1612. When I am getting

  1613. through a hedge

  1614. if my head

  1615. and my shoulders

  1616. are safely through

  1617. I can bear

  1618. the pricking

  1619. of my legs.

  1620. Let us rejoice

  1621. in the remembrance

  1622. that our holy head

  1623. has surmounted

  1624. all his suffering

  1625. and triumphed

  1626. over death.

  1627. Let us follow

  1628. him patiently.

  1629. We shall soon

  1630. be partakers

  1631. of his victory.

  1632. Do you believe this?

  1633. Church,

  1634. is this what sustains

  1635. you during your trials

  1636. and suffering

  1637. here in this age?

  1638. Nonbeliever,

  1639. is this your hope?

1640. Is this what your hope

  1641. is in?

  1642. If you're hearing this

  1643. and you don't know

  1644. the Lord Jesus Christ,

1645. I'm sure all of this

  1646. sounds very attractive

  1647. as a call

  1648. to follow Jesus, right?

  1649. This is really

  1650. appealing stuff

  1651. that you'll suffer

  1652. here in this life.

  1653. Church,

  1654. Jesus is worth it

  1655. and the end

  1656. is certain

  1657. and the king

  1658. commands you

  1659. this moment

  1660. to repent

  1661. and put your faith

  1662. in him.

  1663. He has paid

  1664. your price

  1665. and he has

  1666. victory over

  1667. all the powers

  1668. of darkness

  1669. and it's yours

1670. by faith in the king.

  1671. If you have

  1672. put your faith

  1673. in him,

  1674. the church,

  1675. what do we have

  1676. to fear?

  1677. What can man

  1678. do to you?

  1679. What can

  1680. separate us

  1681. from the love

  1682. of God

  1683. and Christ Jesus

  1684. our Lord?

  1685. nothing.

  1686. Friend,

  1687. what are you

  1688. expecting life

  1689. to be like

  1690. here in the kingdom

  1691. of man?

  1692. I'd be willing

  1693. to bet that

  1694. when you

  1695. pack up

  1696. and you prepare

  1697. for a journey

  1698. far from home,

  1699. if you knew

  1700. you were going

  1701. to be away,

  1702. didn't know

  1703. maybe how long,

  1704. you would want

  1705. to be as prepared

  1706. as you possibly

  1707. could.

  1708. You would want

  1709. to know

  1710. what to expect.

  1711. Stories like this

  1712. are gifts

  1713. from a sovereign

  1714. God through

  1715. his word

  1716. to show us

  1717. what we can

  1718. expect in the

  1719. kingdom of man

  1720. until he brings

  1721. us home.

  1722. I'll share

  1723. one final

  1724. expectation

  1725. of all of

  1726. God's people

  1727. here as we

  1728. close.

  1729. This is our

  1730. great hope.

  1731. Ironically,

  1732. it's the exact

  1733. reverse of what

  1734. we see happen

  1735. here in Daniel

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  1736. chapter 3.

  1737. These three

  1738. faithful men

  1739. refused to

  1740. bow to a

  1741. false God

  1742. and were

  1743. tried for it

  1744. and were

  1745. found guilty

  1746. and were

  1747. cast into

  1748. the fire.

  1749. But when

  1750. Jesus Christ

  1751. returns and

  1752. delivers his

  1753. people at

  1754. last,

  1755. all who

  1756. refuse to

  1757. bow the

  1758. knee to

  1759. King Jesus

  1760. will be

  1761. tried and

  1762. will be

  1763. found guilty

  1764. and will

  1765. be cast

  1766. into the

  1767. lake of

  1768. fire.

  1769. And instead

  1770. of gathering

  1771. to worship

  1772. the idols of

  1773. this world,

  1774. in the end,

  1775. Revelation

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  1776. chapter 7

  1777. tells us

  1778. that all

  1779. of God's

  1780. people,

  1781. a great

  1782. multitude that

  1783. no one could

  1784. number,

  1785. from every

  1786. nation,

  1787. from all

  1788. tribes and

  1789. peoples and

  1790. languages,

  1791. will be

  1792. standing before

  1793. the throne and

  1794. before the

  1795. Lamb,

  1796. clothed in

  1797. white robes

  1798. with palm

  1799. branches in

  1800. their hands

  1801. and crying

  1802. out with a

  1803. loud voice,

  1804. salvation belongs

  1805. to our God

  1806. who sits on

  1807. the throne

  1808. and to the

  1809. Lamb.

  1810. Church,

  1811. that's our

  1812. hope.

  1813. That's our

  1814. expectation.

  1815. salvation.

  1816. Let's be a

  1817. church that

  1818. faithfully lives

  1819. each day here

  1820. in this

  1821. kingdom in

  1822. eager expectation

  1823. of that great

  1824. glorious day

  1825. in that kingdom

  1826. when it comes

  1827. in full.

  1828. Amen?

  1829. Let's pray.

  1830. Lord, we

  1831. thank you for

  1832. the gospel of

  1833. Christ, the

  1834. greatest deliverance

  1835. from our true

  1836. danger, our true

  1837. enemy.

  1838. Lord, our

  1839. greatest danger

  1840. that we face

  1841. is not physical.

  1842. Lord, it's our

  1843. own sin, our

  1844. own guilt, that

  1845. we are not

  1846. right with you,

  1847. that you stand

  1848. against us in

  1849. our sin.

  1850. That's our

  1851. greatest danger

  1852. and yet, Lord,

  1853. you've supplied

  1854. the greatest

  1855. escape by

  1856. sending your

  1857. own son in

  1858. the likeness of

  1859. sinful flesh and

  1860. for sin, Lord,

  1861. to pay the

  1862. price that we

  1863. have earned so

  1864. that any who

  1865. come to you in

  1866. faith might know

  1867. true life, might

  1868. belong to your

  1869. kingdom.

  1870. So, Father, we

  1871. pray that we

  1872. would live as

  1873. citizens of your

  1874. glorious kingdom

  1875. even while we

  1876. live here in the

  1877. kingdom of man.

  1878. We pray this in

  1879. Jesus' name.

  1880. Amen.
